ADM Brent - Down in the Dumps

The group goes back to their respective quarters and sleeps the sleep of the exhausted. The next morning the group feels much better - those wounded remember the healing you get from a full night's rest.

After Conner gets back from the Catacombs (he brings Mira's magic item with him), the group reassembles back at the flat. The day is overcast and a bit cooler than normal for this time of year but nothing unusual.

The group makes it back to the Shanty Quarter just after the ninth hour. The people within the Shanty have also begun their day - it appears that hunger and desperation never take a break. As they move closer to the part of the Shanty closer to the Heap, they notice a few people looking up at them. One of the women, sitting down on a stoop mending some raggedy clothes smiles and says, "Good Day!" A small dirty faced child hiding behind the woman asks her in the overloud voice of a child, "Are they the Guardian Angels that are making the boogies go away?"

The mother replies, "Shh, child. Yes they are the ones," never stopping her restless fingers from sewing.

The group reaches the Heap having realized with a bit of surprise that the denizens here have noted some of their actions. Others who are shambling make small nods or bows to the group, or smile a toothless grin.

This morning, as they come to the edge of the Heap a small flock of noisome vultures rise in the air protesting the arrival of the group.

Wilfire wakes up early and immediately begins his morning ritual of prayer and preparation. Once completed he joins the others, takes breakfast, and heads off towards the shanty.

Once they arrive at the heap, Wilfire returns the bows and nods of the denizens. "Perhaps we should learn more about these Boogies" he says aloud.

(ooc: I believe that at the moment, Wilf has a room to himself. When Wilf moved in, Mira moved out of her room and into Evan's, giving her room over to Wilfire and Shadow)

Knowing that there will be some goblin hunting today, Evan brought his longsword. During the journey to the Shanty, Evan will have everyone walk close together so that Mira can explain his whistles. A soft trilling sound means fall back and regroup around Mira, a chirping sound means take cover, a sharp whistle means attack and several short sharp whistles mean retreat. He explains through Mira, that the party needs to try and stay closer together and concentrate its attacks in the same direction. With Conner in the rear to watch the party's back, the group should be proof against any sudden attacks from the rear.

As he moves through the garbage heap, Evan draws his sword and throwing axe, preparing himself for combat. While he does watch the ground for any change in the tracks from last night, Evan moves quickly towards the shanties where they encountered the goblins last night, fearing that the goblins may have packed up and left. Should he come across any goblin bodies, after all, who would throw away a dead body already in the dump, he will quickly kneel and slice off both ears, stringing them on a leather thong to return to the guard post.

Sleeping well, Arm awakes the next morning refreshed and heads off to the dumps again to rid the Wold of some goblins.

Arriving at the dump, he draws his sword and begins to keep an eye and ear open for trouble (listen=19, spot=21).

Conner unshoulder's his bow as they enter the trash heap and loosely knocks an arrow. He searches for the makeshift marker he had constructed the night before and keeps his eyes open for signs of goblins [spot=6]. "If I was expecting a return visit I would set up an ambush and maybe a few traps, so be carefull" he warns the party.

Before entering the trash heap Kadaz readies his heavy crossbow, quarrel at the ready. Those goblins attacked from a distance before and this time Kadaz wants to be able to hit back.

Shadow has a great nights sleep in the guild, and returns early to the flat where the group lives.

Hearing the what the lady says and the reaction of the locales makes Shadow feel like they are doing the right thing.

Once they get near the trash heap, Shadow draws his bow and loosely knocks an arrow ready for any sudden attack. (Listen=13 Spot=14)

Mira interprets for Evan. She repeats, "we should try not to get separated, and present a united front against these creatures."

The sorcerer decides to keep her magic in reserve, so after casting Mage Armour upon herself, she takes up her crossbow.

Uriel listens to the mother-daughter exchange with a furrowed brow but the group presses on.

He snorts when he sees the birds, "Carrion Eaters. They were probably at the goblins."

Seeing everyone's preparations, Uriel unsheathes his longsword and pulls out his shield. He moves to at or near the front of the group.

The party moves into the Heap, very carefully with weapons at the ready.

Going to the battle of the trash beast, the group sees this is where at least some of the birds were. If possible, the stench of the creature has increased with its rotting.

Evan searches the Heap carefully but continues to be stymied by the heavy traffic to the area. The group moves back into the vicinity of the ambush but the goblin bodies are gone. There are dark patches of ground and trash where the goblins and party members fell or bled.

The party soon becomes mired in the muck and trash juice again searching. They discover several small abandoned shelters (human-sized) that appear to be have been buried over with trash and debris over time. After a few hours the group has covered a frustratingly small area, only discovering an old skeleton well-buried inside a large mound of trash with its skull caved in wearing rotted leather.

"Don't touch that" Wilfire says as he points at the skeleton. "Who knows what kinda disease that thing is carrying."

Then a few minutes later he addresses the group. "Can any among us track? If so perhaps we should try to locate the trail of the Goblin. However, if we don't have a tracker among us, perhaps we should consider hiring someone to perform that service."

Evan eyes Wilfire for a moment then returns to hunting for the goblin tracks. Last night, they had found some shanties that looked like the goblins had been living there so Evan tries to relocate the shanties to start his hunt there.

Lacking the training in tracking skills, Arm is content for the moment to idly pick through the garbage around him (search=6), while he keeps an ever-present eye open for trouble (listen=9, spot=24 - nat. 20).

While picking through the detritus, his mind wanders for some reason to thoughts of a well-fed flightless fowl and some type of game where two teams of men beat each other viciously in an attempt to get an inflated ball to their end of a field. Shaking his head in confusion, he puts those thoughts out of his head, and continues on. (OOC: Happy Turkey Day, everyone!! :) )

"Wilf" starts Mira, "Evan is our tracker." The sorcerer's eyes flicker briefly over the blonde man as he does his best to pick up a trail, then they turn to the smelly piles of refuse. (Spot=18)

Mira adjusts the light crossbow in the crook of her arm after arming it. There won't be any surprises this time! (Listen=11)

Kadaz keeps scanning for trouble. "If I were a goblin I'd be hidden in my deepest hole today and come out only when odds were more in my favor. Let's hope we can locate a track or two."

Shadow will remain silent as the group tries to determine where the goblins have gone. When members of the group start up conversations, Shadow just shakes his head. In a quiet voice, but not a whisper for whispers travel way too far, "If I were a goblin in hiding and heard all of these conversations, I would remain quiet until it was safe again."

Shadow will remain alert and try to find anything that might lead the group to the goblins lair. He knows they cannot move freely around even the Shanty Quarter. (Spot=8, Listen=6, and Search=17)

Evan is able to find the shanties - they are centered around where the attack was, with the telltale signs of blood.

The problem with the tracking is that it is too well travelled here and difficult to make out any one set of tracks.

While the party is looking they hear a sound from back the way they came. It is obscured by the piles of trash but deliberate...

The group mobilizes towards the sound. They turn back towards where the remains of the trash monster lay. Poking it with a stick is a small child with a dirty face.

The moppet turns her head and startles for a second when the group comes around the heaps of garbage with weapons out. Seeing the group more clearly she says, "Good guys!" in a child's overloud voice. She goes back to poking the carcass with a stick.

The moment they identify the noise as a child, Evan turns his attention back to the surrounding garbage, listening intently for any other movement within the garbage. He scans the refuse, pausing when he sees Mira. He quickly signs to her to get the child out of here, then returns to hunting the goblins.

Wilfire, Kadaz, Arm, and Shadow scan the area for any signs of trouble. The garbage dump is eerily quiet and still today; you see no sign of movement apart from the endlessly circling crows. The only sounds you hear are faint noises obviously drifting from nearby shanties.

Somewhere not too far away, a baby wails.

The small urchin gives Conner a "grownups-are-so-stupid" look. "The bad creature livded here," she explains loftily, "but you for killt it yesterday." A thought occurs, and she begins to look doubtful. "Dint you?" She sidles away from the thoroughly squished Otyugh, eyeing it as if expecting to see it move.

Evan has some trouble locating coherent goblin tracks in the muddle from the recent battles. With time and patience, he is able to follow what seems to be a consistent pattern of the tracks back through the scrap heap. He thinks that if he sticks with it a bit longer (one more Track/Survival check), he'll be able to tell where they come from.

Moving slowly and carefully through the garbage, Evan completely misses Mira's sour expression. He scans the area, keeping his ears open for any sound of stealthy movement from the surrounding garbage. Much like working a puzzle, Evan carefully picks apart the mix of tracks in the hopes of finding a set that will lead them to the goblins.

"Gobble-ins?" the girl repeats, eyes wide. Wordlessly, she shakes her head. Clearly she not only doesn't know where they hide, she didn't even know there were any about.

She takes Mira's advice, and a moment later is running from the scrap heap, presumably toward home.

Meanwhile, Evan's attention and patience are paying off. He is at last able to trace the goblin tracks to their source. He shoves aside a pile of filthy rags to reveal a crude trapdoor.

The others watch and listen, but see and hear nothing untoward. It's a little eerie.

Uriel says to Mira, "I will take care of the child."

Uriel sheathes his sword and shield.
To the child, Uriel says, "Come here lass, that creature may be dead but it can still hurt you nonetheless." If the child comes to him, then he will take her hand and draw her out of the heap telling her a funny rhyme {Diplomacy:19}.

"Aren't you worried about the goblins, little one?" he asks at the edge of the Heap. He looks around to see if there are any adults or others looking for the girl. {Spot:11}

After he thinks the girl will not return to the Heap, he tells her goodbye. Then he moves to return to the group.

Evan kneels at the edge of the trapdoor and studies it intently. Not really knowing what he is looking for in the way of traps, he can at least try to see if there are any strings or wires attached to it, although he suspects that if there were, they would be on the underside of the door. His fingers itch as he restrains himself from trying to lift the door until someone more knowledgable about traps can take a look.

Neither Evan nor Shadow spots anything on the door that looks like a trap. The door itself is such a poor affair that you both consider it extremely unlikely that the thing has any kind of sophisticated trap on it.

Wilfire, who can see in the dark, volunteers to be the first one down.

The others continue to scan the area for trouble, but all else remains quiet.

Not everybody can see in the dark, of course. Anybody got a light? :)

"Follow me" Wilfire suggests as he opens the door carefully and prepares to start down the tunnel.

OOC- If nobody has a torch or latern, Wilfire will cast light on someone's weapon.

"It'll glow like that for about twenty minutes, so we should make this trip short."

Evan offers up his sword to be enspelled with light as he cannot see very well at all in the dark. Once the spell is cast, he slips the axe back into his belt and reaches down to take hold of the trapdoor. Evan checks with Kadaz and Wilfire to make sure they are ready, Evan heaves open the trap door, pulling slowly at first to make sure there is nothing tied to the underside to make some kind of warning noise. Once those who can see in the dark have entered the tunnel, Evan enters as well, staying close to Mira this time since he is not tracking.

The fighter re-shoulders his bow and slips the arrow back into it's quiver as the dwarf and the ranger open the trap door. Conner pats the two sunrods in his belt "I've got a light source once we get down there" he offers.

Conner straps his shield to his forearm in preparation for the descent.

Shadow is ready to suggest that he should be near the front because of the trip wire alarm, but remains silent as the group has already made decisions of who is in front.

He will wait his turn to descend into what ever is behind the trap door. He will put away the arrow he had nocked and shoulder his bow. He will draw his rapier because he senses he probably will need it shortly.

"I agree that the trap-finder should be at the front along with a fighter," Uriel says. He puts a dagger in his teeth before he heads down.

He chuckles through the dagger and says, "Aarggh, me hearties!" quietly.

Wilfire opens the door. What he finds on the other side is not so much a tunnel as a shaft--a straight, vertical chimney leading downwards.

Closer inspection reveals hand- and foot-holds cut into the packed earth of the shaft's sides. These are placed closer together than a human-sized being would make.

With their darkvision, both Wilfire and Kadaz can see the bottom of the shaft, some 40 feet below. Not an especially arduous climb--but farther than a person would want to fall.

The others watch and listen, but still there is no sign of goblins on the surface. There is also some talk of a marching order--certainly necessary, since it's obvious that only one person at a time will fit into the shaft.

[If you need to multi-post over the weekend to determine a marching order, please feel free to do so.]

Uriel says upon mention of the size and characteristics of the shaft, "We might tie a rope off to people and lower them down. It would be ill-advised I think to just use the handholds down. Plus as it is packed earth, the ground holds might give way under our weight."

"Does anyone else have rope we can use also?," He asks as he resheathes his dagger and starts to dig into his pack for his own rope.

"Actually, Uriel, I have a silk rope."

Mira lets her pack slide off her shoulders, and takes out a 50ft length of coiled rope. "Doesn't someone have a grappling hook?" she enquires.

Evan doesn't have a grappling hook but he does have a hammer. As they are in a trash dump, it shouldn't be too hard to find something to use for a stake. Evan begins searching the nearby trash in the hopes of finding something. (search-8)

While he searches, Evan signs to Mira, to pass on to the others, Trapfinder should go first with fighter protection at his back.

"I've both rope and grappling hook" the fighter offers. He scans the surrounding trash heap for dangers but his attention 9is diverted by his attempt to look down the hole and judge the battle situation they likely face. "I think we should have warriors near the front and back of our formation, for we could be attacked from either direction. Mira and her energy bolts should be near the middle where she can strike in either direction".

Conner does not savour going down into the confined spaces of the tunnel where his ability to manouver will be limited. "Those with healing should position themselves directly behind the fighters...just in case..."

Stopping for a moment, Arm says to Shadow, "Yes, I think it best that you should go first, but you best be VERY careful, and we will be right behind you.". He then does another scan of the surrounding area (spot=22, listen=5).

Listening to the group decide the order of descent, Shadow will try and inspect the closer handholds.

Having spent many a night, and day for that matter, climbing areas not to unlike this shaft Shadow feels he should be able to make it easily down. He will show some patience waiting for the group to get the rope and grappling hook ready. Once they have it set, "If you could keep the rope just in case, I should be able to climb down silently and see what is at the bottom." (Listen=20 and Climb=14 and Spot=6) He will look around once he gets to the bottom of the shaft.

If he does not see anything he will take the rope off and wave for the next person to start down.

Shadow is able to clamber down using the handholds. They're a little closer together than he'd like, but the descent is pretty easy for him and he reaches the bottom safely. He steps away from the shaft to allow others to descend. He is vaguely aware that the space around him is more open than he would have expected from goblin tunnels, but with only the light filtering down from above, he can make out little of what's around him.

Conner's rope and grappling hook are put to good use, and soon Kadaz is standing next to Shadow down below. Unhampered by the lack of light, Kadaz looks around and realizes that they are standing in a dry riverbed.

Wilfire follows Kadaz down, then Uriel follows Wilfire. Arm climbs down next, then Mira, then Evan. Connor follows last, acting as rearguard. Birdie, as ordered stays up top to guard the rope and make sure the escape route stays open.

You all wind up standing in the remains of an underground river, now dry and rocky. The river's course runs roughly northwest to southeast. It's about 20 feet wide, and the ceiling is about 20 feet up.

By the light of the sunrod, Evan examines the ground. It is rocky, so signs are difficult to see. It seems, though, that there is goblin traffic moving in both directions--both up and down the dry river bed from the shaft.

Kadaz steps up behind Evan, and Shadow remains near the front. Arm steps back to share rear guard with Conner

[Arm has low-light vision, meaning he doesn't need as much light as the humans. He does need some, though--unlike Kadaz and Wilfire who can see in total darkness.]

Shadow sees no wires or any indication of traps. Given how well-traveled this passage is, that's not a big surprise.

The others watch and listen, but see nothing. You do hear things--but it's hard to tell what. Sound echoes oddly down here.

Seeing Evan look at him with 'what direction do we take', Shadow starts moving up the dry river bed. He will maintain his vigilance searching for trip wires or other signs that show there might be any traps or non-consistency (Search=18 Listen=22 natural 20). Turning to Evan, "Let me know if you see anything that might show a secret passage, like foot prints leading up to a blank wall or anything like that."

Shadow will continue to move until, either he or Evan find something, or the group says they need a break.

One direction seems as good as another, and Shadow decides to head "upstream" which is southeast. At least this way, you don't risk tumbling off the cliff.

It's hard to tell, but Shadow seems to feel that the majority of the sounds are coming from "downstream", the other direction.

Arm and Wilfire both see it and point it out, but Shadow and Evan have already noticed it--after about twenty feet of travel "upstream" there is an opening in the packed earth to the right. It's a tunnel, and it appears to be freshly dug.

[Arm, no penalties or anything; I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page.]

The tunnel varies in width between about five and about seven feet. There's room for two people to go side by side, but not room for them to fight. It is goblin-height, meaning most of the party will at least have to stoop. And, of course, it's dark.

I have as current marching order: Shadow and Evan, then Kadaz, Uriel, Wilfire, Mira (with the sunrod), Arm, and Conner. Is that right? Do you want to make changes? Also, do Shadow and Evan stay next to each other, or does one go first?

With the tunnel being so tight, Evan slides his weapons back into their sheaths and pulls his crossbow off his back. With the bow cocked and loaded, Evan motions for Shadow to move forward, following behind him a couple of feet, just enough space to give Shadow plenty of swinging room. Evan kneels and studies Shadow's tracks as Shadow's will be the only friendly tracks from this moment on. Evan doesn't even consider going first as it would be pretty silly for Shadow to spot traps as Evan enters them.

Thinking about Mira's question for a moment, Arm replies, "Unless they lower them down on a rope, I can't see them transporting creatures bigger than themselves down the shaft we entered...even THEY would need to hang on to something on the way down. Of course, it's entirely possible that that is not the ONLY entrance to this place, OR,"he continues with a wry smile, "they can always wait for meals such as us to come to THEM.".

Upon reaching the freshly-dug tunnel, Arm approaches Wilf and says to him, "Your sight is better down here than mine, my friend. Kindly take a quick look down the tunnel to see what's there, but PLEASE be careful.". He continues to the rest of the group, "I say, as long as it's safe, to venture into this new tunnel. I don't like the idea at all of leaving it unexplored if we continue on...it would be MUCH too easy for them to ambush us from it.". Finally, he peers into the hole to see/hear what he can (spot=11, listen=19).

Shadow misses it in the dim light, but Evan spots it in time--just barely. There is a tripwire strung across the passage about 45 feet from the tunnel entrance.

Taking time and being careful, you can all step over the wire without setting anything off. Or, Shadow can attempt to disable it.

To further complicate matters, Arm can now hear the sound of goblin voices somewhere up ahead. They're a ways off, but they're there.

Shadow being stopped by Evan looks at the Ranger questioning look. Once he points it out, Shadow shakes his head at his inability to detect the tripwire, but moves to it and starts to try and disarm it (Disable Device=20). If he gets to a point where he can no longer see the group or he sees goblins he will motion for the group to proceed towards him.

IF he is able to disarm it he will continue on quietly, raising his hand to stop the rest of the group from following (Move Silently=12). He will continue to search for more traps, listen and spot for any movement and other indications of the goblins. (Search=13, Listen=15, and Spot=10)

Shadow is successfully disables the trap, and Mira covers the sunrod. Cautiously, you move forward.

Shortly after the trapped spot, the passage widens into a small antechamber. Looking around, Kadaz and Wilfire can see signs that goblins have spent some time here--gnawed bones and similar scraps. There's nothing here to suggest beds, though.

Kadaz and Wilfire can also see that the passage continues on the other side of the chamber, heading northwest now. And by now, you can all hear the sound of goblin voices, sounding very close now.

As you move through the chamber--the non-dwarves struggling with the total lack of light--you hear a couple of goblin voices call out, perhaps in warning. Then all the voices fall eerily silent.

Realizing that the goblins have probably already seen them, Evan quickly switches weapons, slinging the crossbow back onto his back and drawing his sword and a throwing axe. Evan follows closely behind Shadow, close enough to see Shadow but not close enough to impair his fighting ability. He keeps his eyes and ears open for a possible ambush.

Conner, Mira, and Uriel also get themselves ready for the goblins to appear.

You wait in the darkness for what seems like an eternity. After a time, it becomes apparant that the goblins, too, are waiting for their enemies to approach. You'll either have to outwait them, or move through the tunnel.

After what seems to be an endless wait, Evan begins to move forward as silently as possible, moving left. He taps shadow on the shoulder and motions for him to move right. Turning to look back at Conner and Kadaz, he motions for them to move forward to provide a distraction for the goblins in the hopes that he and Shadow can get into flanking positions. Staying as alert as possible and straining to see his opponents in the dark, Evan exits the tunnel and moves left along the wall.

The sorcerer creeps forward her back still against the rock face on the right hand side of the tunnel. The moment she hears the sounds of combat, she will remove the velvet bag from the sunrod. This should provide some light for the fighters, and prove a distraction to their enemy.

Cautiously, Evan and Shadow make their way forward, feeling their way in the dark. Kadaz follows more confidently, able to see where he is going.

He also sees the goblins arrayed in the room ahead of them. He shouts a warning, but the javelins are already flying toward the party.

Cursing his own clumsiness, he tucks his sword beneath his shield arm and searches for the second sunrod tucked in his belt.

[OOC, Brent e-mailed me and corrected an error I'd made in the original map, so Conner and Uriel have swapped places.]

Kadaz steps up and swings at goblin #2, striking a solid blow and taking the creature down.

Conner, unable to see his opponents, readies himself for the coming battle.

Uriel moves forward as best as he can. Wilfire attempts to reach the goblins, but finds his way blocked by some of his companions.

Arm casts a spell, sending the sounds of ghostly feet echoing through the cavern. [Len, which direction are the "soldiers" coming from? Or is it just a general sound?]

Shadow steps up and slashes at goblin #1 with his rapier, but the blow misses.

Mira uncovers the sunrod, and now the group can see. She moves to the center of the group.

From somewhere at the back of the goblin group, a voice is shouting orders in the harsh goblin tongue.

Goblin #1 pulls a morningstar and swings it at Shadow, but misses. Goblin #5 also steps up to attack Shadow, and hits for 2 points damage.

Goblin #3 steps up to Kadaz and aims a morningstar at him, but the blow clangs off the sturdy dwarf's armor. Goblin #6 steps up to attack, too, and misses his strike altogether.

Goblins 4 and 7 step toward the center of the room to get a better angle, then launch javelins at Uriel. Both hit, for a total of 2 points damage.

Goblins 8 through 10 target Evan with their javelins, although they know he'll be harder to hit in melee combat. All three javelins miss.

Goblins 11 and 12 throw javelins at Wilfire. One of them hits, for 4 points damage.

Wilfire is unable to reach a goblin for hand-to-hand, so he casts a spell instead. Goblin #7 looks puzzled for a minute, then sneers something in goblin at Wilfire.

Evan, swinging weapons in both hands, manages to take out #3 and #6. He then moves forward to allow others to come up behind him.

Conner, no longer blind, begins moving forward.

Shadow's rapier thrust takes out goblin #1.

Arm begins to sing, heartening his allies. [Note that bardic song is also a morale bonus, so it does not stack with Bless.]

Kadaz steps up, but misses his attack.

Uriel steps up to join the melee combat, and takes out goblin #7.

Mira sends two Magic Missiles flying toward #12, and drops him.

Evan strikes at goblin #11. The sword misses, but the axe hits and drops the creature.

Arm stops singing and moves forward, looking for an opening.

Wilfire has also been waiting for an opening, and when Evan drops the goblin, he takes it. He moves foward to engage goblin #10, but misses his strike.

Kadaz drops #5 and moves through the line, looking for #8. [Mira already dropped the one who was giving orders.]

When Kadaz moves, he provokes attacks of opportunity from #4 and #9, but they can't quite penetrate his armor.

Frustrated, Conner steps up and flings a sunrod at #4, hitting him and dropping him.

Shadow steps forward to engage #9 [I'm assuming, since #4 went down], but misses.

Uriel clobbers #9 into next week.

Mira sends two more Missiles flying, these at #8, and that goblin, too, goes down.

There is now only one goblin left, #10. Seeing the situation, he opts for orderly retreat and disappears around the corner.

A bit distressed at seeing that he missed a chance to fight, Arm says to the group, "Hold for a moment...my spell will dissapate very soon, and then we can see if anything else approaches. Keep a sharp eye out nonetheless.". Saying so, he sets about to removing the ears from the fallen goblins so that they may redeem them once they get back to town.

Run is a full-round action, so you couldn't run and cast in the same round. You could move your normal 20 feet and then cast.

Also, remember that a Command has to be understood by the target. Do you speak Goblin?

Arm begins harvesting ears, while Evan and Kadaz move forward to guard the party against other forays.

Wilfire runs in the direction the last goblin ran, but by the time he gets there he is too late to be able to cast his spell; the goblin has disappeared around another corner.

Conner retrieves his sunrod, and Shadow takes a quick look at some of the bodies. He finds a handful of copper and silver coins on each, but nothing of real value.

The group agrees to press on, and hastily forms up to proceed.

No sooner has this registered with Shadow than several javelins come whistling out of the dark behind the party, aimed at Mira and Arm who are at the back. Fortunately, all the javelins miss their mark.

Wilfire is able to see the goblins well enough with his darkvision, now that he's facing the right way. He charges one of them and hits it with his flail. [I don't know how much damage you do with that thing, but I'm going to assume you killed the critter.]

Arm is also able to find a target, and advance on it. His blow goes wide, but Conner is able to charge in and take it out.

Shadow fires a shot that goes wide, and Mira shouts a warning.

Meanwhile Kadaz and Evan, concerned about an attack from the front, hold their ground and keep looking up the tunnel. Kadaz thinks he sees movement up ahead.

Uriel stays where he can support either combat with his bow.

Then the goblins act. Goblin #3 (#1 and #2 were killed by Wilfire and Conner, respectively) steps up and strikes at Arm, hitting him for 3 points damage. Goblin #4 also swings at Arm, hitting for 4 more points damage.

Goblin #5 steps forward a short way, and seems to be shouting orders.

Goblins #6 and #7 come around the corner and fling javelins at Mira. One hits for 1 point of damage.

Goblins #8 and #9 also come around the corner, but throw their javelins at Wilfire. They're at a disadvantage because he's in melee combat, and they don't throw especially well anyway. Wilfire is unharmed.

Wilfire snarls and swings at the closest goblin, but his blow is deflected by the creature's shield. Conner's luck is no better. Arm, although wounded, is able to take out goblin #3.

Kadaz looks around, but sees no fallen javelins in this part of the cave. He and Evan can now both see a group of goblins headed toward them, javelins at the ready.

Uriel shifts position [you didn't have a clear shot at #5 where you were], and takes out goblin #5 with his bow. Mira sends two Magic Missiles flying and takes out goblin #6.

Shadow wants to shoot at #5, but finds that the creature is already down. He shifts targets, and is able to wound #7.

Goblin #4 takes another swipe at Arm, hitting him for 3 points damage. Goblin #8 also moves up to engage Arm, hitting him for 5 more.

Goblin #9 moves up to attack Wilfire, but misses badly.

Goblin #7, wounded, still manages to hit Mira with a javelin for 2 points damage.

OOC- From home I don't jave access to my character sheet and I can't seem to find the map in my yahoo account. With this in mind, Wilfire will act with Arm's safety as priorty one. If he can engage goblin 4 or 8 without taking an AOO he will.

Conner again attacks the goblins in front, and is again unable to connect. He's having the worst luck.

Shadow fires a shot at goblin #7, and hits him squarely. The goblin goes down.

Uriel has the same idea, but goblin #7 is down already. Instead, he shoots at one of the goblins facing Conner and Wilfire. He shoots carefully, to avoid hitting his friends, and as a result misses altogether [-4 for shooting into melee].

Arm slumps to the ground, and Mira moves to him, pulling out a healing potion. [Retrieving a potion is a move action; giving a potion to an unconscious person is a full-round action. Mira can't do both this round. She can get the potion and move to Arm, but that's about it.]

Trying to protect Arm, Wilfire swings at goblin #8, but misses.

Cackling with glee over having knocked Arm out, goblins #4, #8, and #9 now turn their attention to Conner. Their luck is no better than his, though, and they all miss.

Meanwhile, the goblins up the other tunnel approach closer to Evan and Kadaz. Evan throws an axe at one of them (#10), and takes it out before it can throw a javelin. The other three set up and throw. Their throws are terrible; they all miss.

Conner beats back the attack from the three gobins that face him. His blood rising, he launches his own attack, slicing into Goblin #4 with his longsword [Hit AC 20 for 7 hp]. If the goblin remains standing he will finish it by thrusting his spiked shield into it's head, otherwise he rakes Goblin #8 with the shield spikes [Hit AC=24 for 5 HP].

Mira feeds the potion to Arm, which revives him.

Kadaz steps up to face the oncoming goblins, calling to Evan to go help the others.

Wilfire anihilates goblin #9.

Shadow goes to shoot at a goblin and finds that all the ones to the east have been taken out already.

Evan moves back toward Mira, and Uriel steps in behind Kadaz. With his human vision, he has a tough time seeing the oncoming goblins, but he can pick out a target and hit it. Goblin #12 goes down.

Goblins #11 and #13 charge Kadaz, but miss him.

More goblins appear around the corner, and hurl javelins at Uriel. One manages to hit him for 3 points damage.

Conner moves up behind Uriel. Uriel switches places with him, then fires a shot and takes down goblin #14.

Kadaz swings at goblin #11, but his blow glances off the creature's shield.

Shadow moves over and fires at #15, but misses.

Mira also moves over behind the fighters and makes ready her crossbow; Evan moves into position near Conner and Uriel.

Goblins #11 and #13 swing at Kadaz. One of them connects for 4 points damage. Goblin #15 charges Kadaz, hitting him for 5 points damage.

Goblins #16, #17, and #18 step forward and throw javelins at Conner. None of them even come close.

Mira, Evan, and Uriel all attempt ranged attacks, but those little critters are nimble as anything.

Kadaz and Wilfire, with your darkvision you can clearly see that there is some activity starting up in the cross-corridor behind the goblins. You can see goblins crossing in both directions, most in a very big hurry.

Conner, make a Spot check (DC 12) to see the same thing; your light source is behind you if I'm remembering right.

Goblins #16 and #18 exchange glances, then fade back to the cross-corridor and join the general throng. For the moment, the only foes in sight are the ones traveling the cross-corridor. There seem to be quite a number of them.

Unable to see too far into the tunnel the fighter fails to notice where the goblins have dissappeared to. [Sunrod is actually stuck in Conner's belt bit partly covered by his shield].

With no obvious enemy in sight, the fighter begins to search the bodies for treasure and helps gather the weapons that have either been thrown or dropped by the goblins.

Kadaz looks ahead and tries to do a quick count of the number of goblins coming. "There's 2 tunnels up here with goblins coming down both of them. How is everyone doing?"

As the other assess their condition Kadaz starts stacking up goblin bodies in order to make a barricade. A little cover is better than none. He also stacks up javelins against the wall, ready to throw.

Mira picks up the dropped sunrod and tucks it in her belt, like Conner did with his. She loads another bolt into her cross-bow, and waits to hear what the scouts have learned.

"I am down to very simple magics, and would prefer not to engage a large number of the enemy," she admits. The idea of confronting a 'throng' of goblins gives the sorcerer the willies.

How many did you actually see? she asks Evan, bracing her cross-bow against her body with one hand in order to free up the other to sign.

(I'm sorry about being so late getting back to the game, but after traveling to California to discover that my daddy died a true real-life hero, I caught pneumonia coming back and had to spend a week in the hospital) ((-5degrees in Detroit *shudder*))

Evan motons for Shadow to take the right flank and Evan takes the left, thinking it would be better if they advanced separately, less chance of both of them getting caught. Evan creeps forward, trying to locate the enemy and scope out their position, sticking to the shadows and moving as silently as possible.

Conner begins searching the goblin bodies for treasure. There isn't much--a handful of silver and copper coin each. Their armor and weapons are sized for Small creatures, and are of common quality.

Arm begins harvesting ears. Counting the ones in the corridor, there are 22 dead goblins in here.

Evan and Shadow begin creeping down the corridor, making little sound. The corridor ends in sort of a "T" intersection, and there are goblins moving along it. Most of the traffic is moving from your right to your left. Evan notices that these goblins do not wear armor, and many of them are about half-sized. A few of the full-sized ones are carrying goblin babies.

Kadaz stacks a few goblin bodies into a rough barricade, as Uriel and Wilfire urge the others to continue with the attack. Mira keeps a crossbow ready, but is concerned that her magic has just about run out.

Shadow signals to Evan to move back down the corridor. He will move quietly back down the corridor, but will maintain his attention to the intersection.

Once back with the others, "It seems we stumbled upon their lair, and their are adults and children moving down that way." (he indicates to the left - the direction they are moving) "I am not one for killing mothers and children, even if they are goblins." He turns to see what the others think and feel.

"We do need to decide how to handle this menace to the people in Plateau City. How do we prevent the menace from growing back? How did they get here to begin with? Some underground passage - the dry riverbed maybe. Could we collapse the ceiling of the riverbed or these tunnels Kadaz," Uriel thinks aloud to the others.

Evan has no stomach for killing women or childrn either but Uriel has a valid point. It seems a bit silly to let the children grow to adulthood then slaughter them. Evan listens quietly to the advice of the others, looking particulrly to Mira to see what she suggests.

Arm finishes his task just in time to hear Uriel's comment, "I expect nothing less from you, oh saviour of the Wold's filth. You act SO sanctimonius, yet you've given no thought to the fact that some or all of the goblins we've killed here today are the husbands and fathers of those women and children...it's the way of the Wold...kill or BE killed, and you'd be wise to LEARN that. Do you think for ONE second that any of those "women and children", given the opportunity, wouldn't think twice about piercing you with a javelin or knife? You're living in a dream world if you do...collapsing the tunnel sounds like a good idea, but make sure you're in it when it happens.".

Saying so, he turns his attention to keeping an eye open for trouble (listen=21, spot=8).

Pressing her back up against the wall, Mira tries to remain hidden (Hide=13). She stares angrily at the bickering men. "Uriel! Arm!" she whispers hoarsely, "your feud will be our undoing. Shaking her heard, the sorcerer points to Kadaz and Shadow, "Can't you see that some of us are hurt, including yourself, paladin? Look to your wounds before you bleed to death!" she adds, pressing a potion into the man's hand. (Potion of Cure Light Wounds, Mira has 3 remaining, roll d8+1 if Uriel accepts.)

Mira is curious as to what this passage of the enemy signifies, but without any means to investigate further. She quietly asks Evan, "is there any way we could nab one, maybe a smaller one, and question it?"

Wilfire grits his teeth and his face goes bright red when he hears the talk about slaughtering children and unarmed women. He displeasure is obvious, but he knows now is not the time for bickering.

Instead he turns takes position close to the wall with two-handed flail in hand. Crocuhing low he does his best to take some cover behind the make shift wall of Goblin bodies.

Kadaz continues to pile bodies and place javelins close to hand, and Wilfire stands nearby, ready to resume the combat.

Shadow returns and reports what he saw, which, predictably, leads to an argument between Arm and Uriel.

Mira suggests attempting to capture one of the goblins. However, even in the midst of his arguing, Arm hears a sound that has become depressingly familiar over the past few minutes. More goblins are approaching the party from behind.

The sorcerer turns away from her party, and looks down the tunnel as she retrieves a scroll. When the creatures come within range of the spell she intones the words of magic scribed upon it. (Sleep Spell - DC 11?)

Shadow follows the mage's command and moves behind her. Once she has finished her incantation Shadow will once again move down the tunnel to see if she was successful. (Move Silently=16 Spot=12)

IF successful he will take a quick look down both corridors to see what is going on down them. If nothing he will start binding the sleeping creatures together (using his silk rope to tie them together - at least the adults) (Use Rope=16)

Evan shakes his head at the bickering of the others. At Mira's command, Evan moves to the side of the tunnel, even with Mira, against the wall opposite of Shadow. Once the spell is cast, Evan moves forward with Shadow, prepared to deal with any goblins not effected by the spell while Shadow binds the ones that were.

Taking Mira's advice, Arm remains quiet for the moment, but not without taking the action of spitting at ground at Uriel's feet. Crowding up against the wall as well, he waits for Mira to finish her spell, then he will advance down the corridor to see if the spell worked, listening for sounds of activity in the meantime. Mira moves toward the tunnel and casts Sleep from her scroll. She manages to catch four of the goblins in the area of the spell's effect, and all four lie down for a little nap.

Shadow, Evan, and Arm make ready to sneak down the corridor, but it is quite evident that there are more goblins coming behind the sleeping ones.

Conner moves to a spot where he can see both tunnels, and he, too, sees the goblins advancing.

Kadaz gets his javelin ready, and Uriel heals himself.

Three of the oncoming goblins step over their sleeping comrades to attack Evan and Arm who had been advancing. Evan gets a good whack at one of them (#6) and wounds it badly.

Two of the goblins swing at Evan, and one swings at Arm, but none of them is able to connect. Meanwhile, another goblin begins waking the sleeping ones.

A thin smile creeps across the sorcerer's face as some of the goblins tumble into a slumber. May have slowed them up a little, she thinks to herself.

Mira falls back behind those who are better at hand to hand combat. She presses her back up against the rock face, and tries to stay out of the line of fire of those who remain behind her.

When an opportunity presents itself, and there is an opening in the fighting, she will point her finger at the closest goblin and send out a ray of freezing air and ice. (Hit AC 18 (19 with Wilf's Bless) for 3 pts cold dmg.)

Conner switches weapons, and Wilfire moves toward the new battle.

Mira lets loose a Ray of Frost and manages to kill off the goblin that Evan wounded earlier (#6).

Uriel tosses a torch down toward the T intersection, then pulls out his bow and gets ready for goblins approaching from that direction.

Kadaz throws a javelin, which misses, then draws his axe and advances on the fray.

Arm swings and takes out goblin #7.

Goblin #3 begins waking goblin #1. Goblin #5 swings at Arm, hitting him for 4 points damage. Two new goblins arrive; one advances and attacks Evan, but misses. The other begins waking goblin #4.

Conner re-positions and fires a shot, but it goes wide. Evan takes out goblin #9.

Wilfire hangs back, still wary of a possible attack from the other direction. Uriel, too, is keeping a sharp eye on the other corridor.

Shadow fires at goblin #10, wounding it. [A reminder for everyone: a natural 20 is not an automatic critical. If you roll a natural 20, roll to hit again. If this second roll would succeed against the defender's AC, then the strike is critical. Without a second roll, I can't count it as a critical.]

Kadaz steps forward and splats goblin #1, who was only beginning to wake up.

Mira fires another Ray of Frost, this time hitting goblin #5, then Arm finishes it off.

Awake now, goblin #4 stands and throws a javelin at Evan, but misses. Goblin #10 throws his spear at Shadow, and hits him for 4 points damage. Goblin #3 begins waking goblin #2.

Meanwhile, Uriel and Wilfire see several good-sized and well-armed goblins heading down the other corridor. These fellows look considerably tougher than the goblins the party has faced to date. The two in front stop and hurl javelins at Uriel. One is deflected by the goblin-corpse barricade, but one hits Uriel for 5 points damage.

Conner takes careful aim and fires a shot at goblin #3. His shot hits and drops the creature.

Shadow fires back at goblin #10, but he's trying not to hit Arm or Kadaz, so his shot is off a bit.

Kadaz steps up and clobbers goblin #2.

Uriel tosses a javelin back at the goblins, and does some damage, but he is a bit surprised at how hard they are to hit. [no critical]

Mira retrievs a potion and moves over toward Shadow.

Evan steps up and dispatches #4 before it can even rise to its feet.

Arm begins heading toward the other entrance.

Goblin #10, still standing, throws a javelin at Evan, but misses. He then backs away down the corridor.

The bigger goblins begin moving down the corridor toward Uriel. The goblin-body barrier slows them somewhat, but two are still able to get close enough to attack the paladin with their warhammers. Both miss.

One of the others throws a javelin at Arm, but misses. The other is stopped by the barricade and can't act this turn.

Behind them appears the biggest, toughest, most heavily-armed goblin you have seen yet. He growls something at the other four in the goblin language, then begins advancing toward the fray.

Uriel again attacks goblin X1, and notes again how hard it is to hit the creature, who is both nimble and well-armored. He does manage to land a major blow, though, and the creature now looks badly wounded.

Arm steps up and finishes X1.

Conner moves toward the fray and fires a shot, but it goes wide. Evan also moves before throwing an axe, and he, too, missses.

Mira hands a healing potion to Shadow, who drains it and feels better.

Wilfire looks to charge, but there are too many people between him and his targets. He moves into position and prepares to strike. [Can't charge through occupied squares, and I couldn't figure out how to get you through unoccupied ones in a straight line.]

Kadaz stays on the west side of the cave, alert for fresh attacks from that direction.

Goblin X2 shifts to make room for his oncoming colleagues, and aims another blow at Uriel. It's a brutal strike, and does 17 points damage. [Critical hit. Sorry!]

Goblin X3 moves up to strike at Arm, and hits him for 5 points damage.

Goblin X4 moves up and attacks Wilfire, but misses.

Snarling curses, the biggest goblin (Z) moves up and throws a javelin at Conner. There's too much intervening cover, though, and the shot misses.

Arm also hits X3, who is now looking rather hurt.

Kadaz, realizing that the fight is behind him, stops watching the east tunnel and heads toward the fray.

Conner five-foots, trying to get behind the goblin leader, then slashes him for 4 points. The leader is now looking pretty hurt.

Shadow fires an arrow at the goblin leader [Scott, did you take a -4 for shooting into melee?]

Mira hurries to Arm's side, pulling out a potion as she goes.

Goblin X3 swings at Uriel, but misses.

Wilfire has more luck against X4, and deals him a serious blow.

Evan pulls Arm out of harm's way, then Mira administers a healing potion [I chaged the order this happened so it wouldn't provoke an AoO. Hope that's okay.]

Uriel takes a swing at the goblin leader, but it doesn't quite get past the chain shirt the creature is wearing. [This guy's AC is 21]

Shadow fires his last shot, and misses.

The goblin leader moves around Kadaz. He attempts some fancy maneuvers, but they don't fool the dwarf. [Tried to tumble and failed, so the move provokes an AoO from Kadaz].

Goblin X3 then shifts five feet so that Kadaz is flanked, and attacks him. His blow is solid (but luckily not critical) and does 8 points damage.

The leader [assuming Kadaz hasn't dropped him] then attacks Kadaz and hits for a total of 11 points damage.

Goblin X4 continues to go after Wilfire, but misses.

As the goblin leader stumbles by Kadaz takes advantage of the opening and swings but misses. (attack 19)

Once the enemy is in position they pound on Kadaz making him regret putting himself into this position. Kadaz manages just barely to stay on his feet and replies to the leader's attack with a solid hit. (attack 28, damage 13).

Kadaz quickly shakes his head to clear, grips his shield tightly, and readies himself for the return blow that is sure to come.

Wilfire keeps after X4, landing a solid hit that drops the creature.

Kadaz rounds on the goblin leader, and with one solid strike the leader, too, goes down.

Mira helps Arm to his feet, then moves out of Shadow's way.

Uriel moves to attack the leader, then realize the goblin is down, so he turns his attention to X3--and drops him.

The cavern is eerily silent as the sounds of battle fade.

Conner breathes a sigh of relief as the last of the goblins is dispatched. He quietly sheathes his sword and retrieves his bow from where he had dropped it. Only then does he start to search the dead goblins and inspect their belongings.

With a quick turning of his powerful wrist, Wilfire pulls the ball end of his flail from the slop that was once a goblin. He then uses his sleave to wipe the blood off his face, and the clothes of the dead creature to clean the blood off his weapon.

With that done Wilfire begins to heal those in need, starting with himself (10 healed). He then heals Kadaz (6) and Uriel (6) with a cure light wounds, and then casts an additional two healing spells (0 level) on Kadaz and Uriel as well.

With that done, Wilfire is all out of healing spells.

OOC- Both Kadaz and Uriel should heal 8 points.

OOC- I realize I wrote 3/24 HP, but that should have been 13/24. It was a typo.

Creeping up to Uriel, Mira asks, "do you still have the healing wand? Use it upon yourself and the dwarf!" The sorcerer indicates Kadaz with a gesture, before continuing "otherwise I have 2 potions. Each of you can have one."

While the woman waits for a reponse from the paladin and the fighter, she leans against the wall of the tunnel breathing deeply, and trying to get her bearings. She does not join the looters at their bloody work, but neither does she dissuade them from their task.

(Mira has two potions of CLW remaining. Please post if you are taking one of them.

Arm reiterates his point to the group, "We need to get out of here for now to regroup, heal and the like. We can wedge the door above shut and return tomorrow when we are once again ready. We'd best act soon before more enemies arrive, though.".

He then turns his attention to harvesting more ears until the party is ready to leave, thinking that the ears of the leader should fetch extra money.

While the others heal and search the bodies, Evan and Shadow move to make sure that no more goblins are coming. The eerie silence persists, and you can see no sign of any more of the bloodthirsty little creatures.

Meanwhile, the searchers find that the two short swords and the chain shirt belonging to the goblin leader are of exceptionally fine quality. You also find an odd amulet on a chain around his neck, and a potion in his belt pouch.

The four bodyguard goblins (the "X" goblins) each have a very nice-looking warhammer. Each of them has a potion as well.

Mira puts her potions away when Uriel uses the wand to heal himself and Kadaz. A worried look on her face, she moves over to stand closer to Arm. Checking out the scratches she received during the combat, the sorcerer makes a sour face, "my wounds will heal in short order, but my magics will not return to me until the coming of the new day. I have nought but cantrips left. I will be of little use to you, without some rest."

The woman moves over to examine the articles confiscated from the dead creatures. "With a little time, I might be able to identify those potions," she says.

Bending over the pile of bodies, in order to help the others salvage anything of value, he calls, "Uriel! Wilf! Any of these worth resucitating for questioning?" The fighter isn't sure. They all look like goners to him. But he is concerned about the missing children of Plateau City and wonders if the goblins were somehow involved.

Evan listens to the whispered conversations, bein g of two minds as to their next move. He agrees with the others that they have momentum and if they leave now to return on the morrow, most likely the goblins will have traps set up for them. But he is also concerned about Mira, who has very little magic left. If she is reduced to fighting hand to hand, it will be very dangerous as she hasn't had much in the way of martial training.

The eerie silence of the area helps Evan make up his mind. He signals to Shadow that he is moving forward and then begins to creep down the tunnel the large goblins came from, listening and searching as he moves along, trying to determine if there is any more danger here.

Looking carefully at the potions, Mira think's they're probably healing potions of some kind. Each is labeled with markings in some other language--presumably Goblin. Perhaps identifying them is simply a matter of having somebody translate the labels.

Evan and Shadow move cautiously down the corridor to see what they may see. The corridor ends in a rough "T" intersection, with passages going roughly right and left. The rogue and the ranger hear no sounds, and see no signs of any goblins.

Conner watches as the sorcerer weaves her magics. He is interested in the items that belonged to the goblin leader. Evan checks the ground for tracks, seeking the direction the large goblins came from. If they are lucky, they've taken out the men of the goblin tribe so that the women will move on, deciding that this place is too dangerous. Once he figures out the direction, he will slowly begin moving down that tunnel, listening and searching for anything dangerous or of importance.

Finished with her spells, the sorcerer once again becomes aware of her surroundings. As the others start to move off, she recognizes the Bard is still bleeding. Handing him 2 vials (Cure Light Wounds x 2), she pockets the ones taken from the goblins as well as the amulet, saying, "we're going to need these if we continue with this quest tonight. I believe the dwarf is out of magics, too."

The woman sighs, wondering why the paladin did not use the curing wand on Arm. This fued between these two will have to stop! she thinks to herself.

Shadow lets out a slow breath when they do not find anything yet up the tunnel. He is about to turn around to get the rest of the group when he notices Evan start to move away. He is torn, but quickly decides to follow the Ranger. He will continue to try and make sure nothing is coming or that there are no more traps. Mira looks at the labels, but cannot read the script. She uncorks one, sniffs it...yep. That's a healing potion, all right. The only question is how strong they are.

She casts Detect Magic and studies the captured weapons and armor. During the first round, she detects the presence of magic. During the second round, she detects seven auras (apart from the potions and the items her companions may have). None of the auras is stronger than Faint. During the third round, she successfully detects the Transmutation aura coming from one of the leader's short swords. [If you'd like to continue to concentrate and make Spellcraft checks, go ahead and roll up to six more].

Conner looks for an out-of-the way place to stash the loot. There are a couple of small nooks in the cave that might suit, or the items could be concealed under a pile of goblin bodies. Neither solution strikes the fighter as ideal.

Wilfire, Uriel, and Kadaz are all in favor of moving on. Arm lingers to keep an eye on Mira.

Evan and Shadow continue to explore the corridor. Evan has a hard time spotting the goblin leader's tracks at first, but Shadow is able to point them out. Evan can now see clearly that the larger goblins came from the left. He leads Shadow in that direction, and almost immediately the passage splits again, this time in kind of a Y.

Looking at the tracks, Evan can see that the right-hand passage was more heavily traveled by the goblins, but the large goblins came from the left-hand side. And he can't be sure, but he thinks he heard a faint sound from up the right-hand side.

Mira has one last look at the pile of weapons and armour. (Spellcraft=18, 15, 25, 18, 27, 27). "These items are of no use to me, but I can surely carry something," she volunteers, looking at Conner. Lifting up the chain shirt, she holds it in front of the bard, adding, "try this on, Arm. If you are going to be my protector, you need something more substantial than what you've got now!" The woman smiles encouragingly at the man, hoping he will accept the armor.

Mira watches as the others start to disappear down the tunnel. "We better hurry or they very well may leave us behind."

[I know I'm posting early, but I have a thing tonight and I didn't want to post late.]

Mira concentrantes for a few more rounds and is able to detect faint Transmutation auras from the leader's chain shirt and two short swords, and from the warhammers weilded by each of the four large "X" goblins.

Arm tries on the chain shirt, but although the goblin leader was large for a goblin, he was still a Small creature. The shirt doesn't fit (sorry about that).

The good news is that, since the goblins are Small, their gear weighs less. It isn't difficult at all to carry the magic gear away, especially with the help of Kadaz, Conner, and Wilfire.

The group begins to move up and join Shadow and Evan at the intersection. The sounds up the passage to the right, are very faint, but anyone who makes a Listen check of 20 can hear them.

Evan signs to uriel for the others to stay and keep an eye on the left passage while he and Shadow scout the right. As he signs, he keeps an eye on Shadow to try and detrermine how much of the sign Shadow understands. Although he never said anything to his Uncle Saul, he always knew Saul had a fairly shady past and suspects that the sign he was taught was part of another language that Uncle Saul used when his friends came to visit.

Evan motions for Shadow to follow then starts moving down the right passage to investigate the sounds they hear.

Evan and Shadow move carefully down the right-hand passage. It's wider than the other passages you've been in down here, and the ceiling seems a bit higher. The light of the sunrod reveals rough rock walls that seem to be natural in origin.

The passage widens out into a room, which seems to be deserted. Judging from the piles of moldy straw strewn about, and the smell, this room was general living quarters until very recently. You see a couple of empty sacks and a few random bits of cloth, but few personal possessions.

You do definitely hear a faint sound, though, coming from the back of the chamber and toward your left.

Arm also hears the noise when he reaches the "Y" intersection, but the others do not. They remain alert for any signs of returning goblins, but the eerie silence continues.

Evan and Shadow continue to advance cautiously. The sound is clearer now--it's a person whimpering in terror. They approach the rear of the chamber and can see where the sounds are coming from. To the left is an alcove branching off from the main chamber. In the alcove, a huddled figure rocks back and forth, staring at you with fear-crazed eyes.

Arm and Uriel, following, can see the others looking toward the alcove, but can't quite make out what's inside.

The others, remaining at the intersection, continue to hear no sounds of any goblins.

The figure proves to be a human woman, no longer young, but perhaps not exactly old, either; it's difficult to tell. She is very thin, and there are bruises on her face and arms. There is a manacle around one ankle, chained to an iron spike driven deep into the chamber's floor. Looking around, you can see other such manacles and chains in the little alcove, but these are unoccupied.

Shivering with fear, the woman does not respond to Wilfire or Conner, but something of Mira's effort seems to get through to her. "Run!" she says in a low, urgent voice. "Run now, while you have a chance. They're coming back! They'll kill you just like the others." Tears begin to flow down her face. "So much blood...Oh, Wardd help us all!"

Evan, Kadaz, and Arm continue to stay alert for trouble, but don't see or hear anything alarming. Shadow and Uriel search the chamber, and find nothing of value. The few bits and scraps remaining seem to have been simply abandoned. Uriel's best guess is that the former occupants of the chamber packed and left in rather a hurry.

As Conner and Shadow work to free the captive. Mira murmurs words intended to calm and comfort the woman. She will gently enquire and check for wounds. If the woman relaxes, Mira will ask her how she ended up as a hostage, and who is responsible for her plight. (Diplomacy=14, Gather Info=16)

Shadow goes to work on the manacle. The lock is crude, and he is able to get it open in short order. The woman starts a little when she is released.

"Children?" she replies to Conner. "Yes--" her voice breaks, and the tears flow more freely. "Children, and women, and men. Babies. An old man. All dead. All, all dead." She is sobbing now. "And...and eaten!"

Lost in the remembered horror, she doesn't seem to notice Arm's or Mira's attempts to speak with her further.

Evan, Uriel, and Kadaz continue to stay alert, but the only sounds in the goblin caves seem to be the ones happening right here.

Laying a hand on Mira's shoulder, Arm says "We'd best be going before more of them arrive. See if you can find out if she's able to walk...if not I can try carrying her.". He then scans the area again (spot=20, listen=15).

On hearing about the goblin's use of their captives Kadaz is even more sure of their proper action. "We have to kill them all," he says to the others on guard. "Let's escort this woman out and then return to finish the job."

"I think we need to press the advantage right now." He does look at the woman and wonders what to do with her, but really feels like they need to move forward now. He will move back to the y intersection and start quietly moving down the right hand side. (Move Silently=13, Listen=12, Search=6) He does hope that Evan joins him down the passageway.

OOC: Kathy did you ever make a decision on how much Shadow can understand of Evan's sign language?

"Surely this is suicide!", exclaims the sorcerer looking pointedly at the paladin. "We have no advantage. This woman is weak, those we hoped to save are dead if she speaks the truth,(Sense Motive=21) and we have little by way of magic, or munitions," Mira's look takes in the rogue, and his nearly empty quiver.

"I am for leaving now. We can inform the guards. If they refuse to take action, then we can. Routing out a goblin hoarde will take planning and better equipment then we now possess."

Mira will take a few steps to return the way the party came, sunrod in one hand, and shortspear in the other. "Are we together?"

Uriel says gently to Mira, "We don't know there aren't others nearby. This poor woman had a limited view of the caves. I will not leave without looking a bit further and checking for more survivors. What if we left someone else down here at the verge of death that we could save?"

"Mira, I understand your concern for the safety of this poor woman, but there really might be others down here. If we leave they surely will not have any chance of survival. We have them on the run and I don't think any of them are really organized for serious resistance. We have basically chopped off their head, in a matter of speaking." Shadow is talking about that their leader is dead and that should make it much easier.

With that Shadow will move down the corridor to the Y intersection and inspect it further. (not very good numbers but they are what I rolled in - the ones in my previous post that is)

Having rescued the woman, you debate what the next step should be. Continue to explore the caves, or escort the terrified former prisoner back to the surface? There are persuasive arguments either way.

Shadow returns to the Y intersection and takes a look around. He sees plenty of goblin tracks, but nothing else. There is still no sound, apart from what your party makes.

[Sorry to give you so little, but it's sounding as if the group hasn't reached a definite decision yet.]

"I will not split the party, for that would surely lead to disaster," says Mira. "Armathen?" she asks, "her hand resting lightly on the bard's forearm, "if you will support the woman on one side, I will take the other. Let us stay near the back, and hope no one comes up on us from behind." Mira provides some basic first aid to learn if the woman is wounded. (Heal Check=19) She then tries to get the frightened woman to rise. She will drape one of the woman's arms over her shoulder and put her hand around her waist for support. (Strength Check=13, Aid Another?) As a result, Mira will no longer be able to carry her shortspear, but she will keep the sunrod in her free hand.

(OOC: DM Kathy, does Mira get the impression that the woman is telling the truth as she knows it? Sense Motive=21 rolled earlier)

Oops, sorry. Yes, she seems far too distraught to be saying anything but the complete truth.

Evan waits for the others to make a decision then moves to join Shadow, sticking to the left side of the tunnel while Shadow is on the right. He moves forward swiftly and silently, an expression of grim determination on his face, senses alert for any sign of ambush as he moves down the tunnel.

You help the woman to her feet. She seems able to walk, but is terrified that the goblins are going to come back and "get her." Mira and Arm quickly realize that they don't need to support her as much as keep her from bolting.

You set off to explore the rest of the caves, with Shadow, Evan, and Wilfire in front. Mira and Arm follow with the terrified former prisoner, and with Conner close at hand. Kadaz and Uriel bring up the rear.

Returning to the "Y" intersection, you take the opposite tunnel. It leads to two interconnected chambers, which still have bedrolls and personal possessions strewn about. One wall of one of the chambers appears to have had a very recent cave-in.

Conner moves over to the abandoned bundles, and uses his sword to move the items about as he searches for clues to the owners (or any treasures or trinkets that might have been abandoned.)(Search=17) When he notices the cave-in, he calls to the dwarf, "Kadaz. You know stone. Does this look stable?" The fighter uses his sword to point at the ceiling and rock face and waits for the stout-one's response.

Noticing the cave-in, Mira tries to discern if the fallen rock might block the opening of another tunnel,(Spot=5) but the dancing shadows confuse her, so she listens (Listen=15) for noises from the other side in case someone is trapped.

Evan gives both chambers a quick search, stopping to study the cave-in for a moment before returning to the entrance to the tunnel to stand guard, figuring the dwarves would be better at descerning whether they can pass the cave-in or not.

You look around in this room, but it yeilds few clues. Conner finds some clothing and common equipment (waterskins, rope, empty sacks, etc.), but nothing that would indicate ownership.

Evan notes that the tracks of the goblins lead right up to the collapse. In fact, he's pretty sure the rocks fell on top of the tracks.

With his knowledge of stonework, Wilfire believes the cave-in does not look natural.

Nobody else spots anything of note, and nobody hears anything untoward.

"Looks like they dropped the ceiling" Wilfire explains. "Let's check out the right-hand passage and worry about this area later".

Wilfire begins moving towards the right-hand passage. Once they arrive he will pay carefull attention to the roof, looking for anything that might indicate its rigged to be dropped.

Longing for a rest himself, Arm escorts the woman to Mira, where he says, "Come on, luv...hopefully it'll not be much longer, then we can ALL have a rest.". He then follows the rest down the new passage, scanning as he goes. (spot=19, listen=9).

Tentatively deciding that the goblins escaped through this tunnel and then collapsed it behind them, you retrace your steps to explore the rest of the goblin caves.

Backtracking to the T, you take the other passage and discover a smaller chamber that also appears to have been abandoned. Nearby is a tunnel that leads back to the dry river bed you entered when you first came down the well.

Although you listen intently, you hear no sounds other than the ones you make. It would appear that the goblins are all dead or fled.

Mira removes a small bag containing a mix of seeds, nuts, and dried fruit from her pack. She offers the trail rations first to the rescued woman, and then to Arm, before helping herself. Twisting the lid off the waterskin, she takes a swig, then offers it 'round to the party.

Stopping in front of the paladin, the sorcerer whispers, "can we go home now?" There are dark circles under her eyes.

Wilfire's shoulders slump slightly, as he lets himself relax for the first time. "I think we earned ourselves a good meal... and a bath... for a job well done. Let's go home, but I guess we should make a report to the town guard."

Wilfire takes a moment to wipe any goblin blood off himself, and then joins the group back to the surface.

"I suppose the rest have fled. Let's grab the rest of the equipment we found and our ... reward tokens and get out of here," Uriel looks to the others.

After he whispers, "No one else alive. How many did they kill? The city didn't even notice." The harsh words echo down the dry riverbed.

Grateful to finally be out of this place, Arm aids the woman when necessary, and looks forward to be rid of the weight of all the goblin ears in his possession, "Not exactly a happy ending I suppose, but any ending you can walk away from is a GOOD ending." he thinks as he gives one last furtive look around (spot=16, listen=20).

Thanks to all of the healing Kadaz is in good condition. So he was looking forward to another fight. But with a rock wall sealing off the tunnel means that won't happen today. "I'll get some digging equipment so tomorrow we can open that tunnel" he adds eagerly.

The thief sulks a little bit because they did not find any other captives. "I am not sure that we are the best suited to try and tunnel through that cave-in." He says as the group starts to head back to the way in.

With a sigh, Conner sheaths his sword, and attaches his shield to his back. He wonders if he has enough money left to afford the day's special at Samson's.
