Daylight

DM Kathy
Friday February 4th, 2005 2:25:28 AM

Bone-weary, you climb back up the well to the Shanty Quarter dump. The daylight seems unbearably bright after your hours underground, and the filth and squalor of your surroundings strikes you anew. Truly, it seems the goblins live better.

The woman, whose name is Narina, expresses a desire to return home to her husband.

[Assume you can make it safely back to your lodgings, and please feel free to multi-post over the weekend as you work out what to do next. I'll try to chime in as Narina if need be.]

Kadaz
Friday February 4th, 2005 7:35:56 AM

Kadaz blinks in the bright sunshine as he looks around. "We'd better mark this entrance somehow so we can find it when we come back." He looks around for several unique markers that he'll arrange exactly 10 of his paces due north of the entrance. Then he'll redisguise the entrance. "We don't want any of the the neighbors here falling down this hole" he explains.

"I think we could now split up. Some of us should excort Narina home, some visit the guard and collect our bounty, and the rest buy digging equipment. Then we get cleaned up and meet at Sampson's."

Arm
Friday February 4th, 2005 9:44:32 AM

"Aye, I think that a good idea. If anyone has any more ears, I'll take them to the guard and head right back to the apartment. That way, those of you who want to buy equipment can do so out of the spoils of that, and the rest can spend their share as they see fit.".

OOC: Kathy, I figure I have about 30 ears, but I don't know how many the rest have...plz advise. :)

Conner
Friday February 4th, 2005 8:28:00 PM

The tired fighter makes sure to pick up any of the armour and weapons from the dead goblins on the way out. "I'll bring these over to the Catacombs after I clean up. We may need the coin just to pay our supper bill!"

Conner spends an hour at the baths, cleaning himself, his gear and his clothes as well as possible. Following a pintv at Sampson's he offers to take any other items to the catacombs that the party wishes to sell.

[OOC Kathy - can you provide a list of what we have recovered? I have lost track of how many goblins we dispatched and the weapons and armour we recovered. Thanks]

Mira  d20+5=19 d20+4=21
Saturday February 5th, 2005 10:53:06 AM

"I'll see Narina home," volunteers the sorcerer. Mira will wait for any who wish to be a part of returning the woman to her home, before starting off.

The sorcerer will try to learn from which quarter the woman hails, what were the circumstances of her capture, and if she can recall any details of the other victims of the goblins. Mira will try to remember the details in order that the families can be notified. Her enquiry is respectful of the woman's emotional state. (Diplomacy=19, Gather Info=21)

Your inventory:

4 warhammers (Faint Transmutation)
1 chain shirt (Faint Transmutation)
2 short swords (Faint Transmutation)
(All are Small size)

5 healing potions of some kind

Misc. coin (mainly copper and silver, not very much of either)

Some number of goblin ears. I wouldn't worry about how many exactly; your reward is pre-set. ;)

Kadaz

Once the party is back on the land surface Birdie reacts stongly at their return. At first the dog yips a few times in greeting but then the scent of goblin blood and gore, which is liberally splattered on most of the party, reaches his nose. He starts growling, bares his teeth and gets into a fighting stance. "Birdie, calm down. We won the fight." Kadaz gets down on one knee and puts his axe on the ground. "Come here, boy. It's just me." Birdie approaches tentatively, then jumps on Kadaz in happiness. They roll around on the ground a bit, getting even more dirty and smelly in the refuse of the dump. Kadaz eventually stands up and flicks a few bits of larger trash off. "Maybe we should have that bath first."

Mira  d20+4=18
Sunday February 6th, 2005 10:44:39 AM

After the delivery of Narina is accomplished, Mira will head for the appartments, where she will drop her pack and weapons at the foot of her bed, and lay down on top of the covers fully clothed. The woman will sleep until she awakens naturally or someone or something awakens her.

Feeling rather stiff, and disgustingly dirty, she will collect a plain sack with some toiletries, a change of clothes, and head for the baths. Mira brings enough coin to pay for a massage and sauna, as well as a bath. She keeps her mouth shut, and her ears open as she listens to the patrons and staff gossip about goings on in Plateau City. (Gather Info=18)

Arm
Sunday February 6th, 2005 1:54:17 PM

Arm sets off for the nearest town guard post, where he converts the ears for cash. Stopping at the bath house, he takes a well-deserved bath, but is careful not to use any of the proceeds. Once he is finished, he heads back to the apartment to divvy up the spoils.

DM Kathy
Sunday February 6th, 2005 5:11:24 PM

You escort Narina back to her home, which is not the joyful experience you were perhaps hoping for. She leads you through a maze of squalid Shanty Quarter shacks and stops in front of a particularly hideous example which seems to have nothing but a piece of canvas for a front door.

She turns to face you, and opens her mouth to say something, but stops when the canvas door is flung aside and a man staggers out. His eyes are bloodshot and he is clutching a small green-glass bottle. "Where've you been, woman?" he slurs. "Get inside! Not a bitta food inna house an--" he pauses, apparantly noticing your presence for the first time. "What're you lookin at?" he demands.

Narina hastily explains her absence and briefly describes her rescue.

"Goblins, eh?" The man doesn't seem to know quite what to make of the tale, but his eyes sweep over you again and his expression turns crafty. "Whatta horr'ble thing to've happened!" he says, a beggar's whine creeping into his voice. "An' us without to coppers t'rub t'gether. An' no food inna house...." he looks at you hopefully.

Narina sighs, and thanks you profusely for her rescue, then collects her intoxicated husband and retreats behind the canvas door.

Back in town, the lesser coins you found on the goblins is enough to buy baths and a good meal from Sampson's. Arm (and anyone else interested) takes the goblin ears to the city guard, and receives 400 gold pieces as a reward. [How much do you tell the Guard?]

Evan
Monday February 7th, 2005 5:47:06 AM

Evan travels with Mira to deliver Narina to her husband, although, after meeting the husband, he wonders if she might not be better somewhere else. But since the woman seems to want to stay with the cretin, Evan simply purses his lips and heads away with Mira. Once they get back to the flat, Evan immediately heads off to get clean, returning to find Mira fast asleep on her bed still fully clothed. He does his best to get her out of her dirty clothes without waking her and covers her with his own blanket before taking up a post outside of the door, keeping guard so that no one will wake her. He quietly sharpens his blades as he thinks about what has occured so far, eventually falling asleep himself.

Arm
Monday February 7th, 2005 6:16:51 AM

Arm relates the whole story to the guard, including finding only Narina alive and the killing of the goblin leader. "Some MAY have escaped through a collapsed tunnel, but I cannot imagine that there are many left. We MAY decide to go back and route the rest of them, but I must check with the rest of my group before I can say for certain.".

Shadow
Monday February 7th, 2005 1:34:37 PM

Shadow will stay with the group that takes Narina back to her house. He is about to say something about the way this horrible man treats his wife, when she takes him away and leads him into their house. "To each their own." Shadow mumbles as the group heads back into town.

Once the group gets back into town, Shadow says, "When are we meeting in the morning?" (The rogue has not yet made up his mind about the safety of the groups apartments yet, so he will return to the guild for the night.)

When they have determined a time and place, Shadow will leave to go to the guild first and then a bath (That is for himself as there are quite a few of the members of the guild that always smell like he does now.) After a bath he will report his findings to the day/night master (depending on his return time), and see if there are any further instructions in this matter. (He will not mention the reward for goblin ears to the day/night master though.)

He will check his gear, make any necessary repairs (if he can do it), and then go to sleep. In the morning he will return to the groups apartment to see what is up for the new day.

Kadaz
Monday February 7th, 2005 3:43:33 PM

After bathing and putting on clean clothes, Kadaz adds to the discussion of what to do next. "I'd like to go back underground and break through that rock wall. We can then pursue the goblins and make sure they do not kidnap and eat anymore residents. And we should tell the guard that we found goblins, but we don't need to tell them just yet where the entrance is. They're not a threat right now and I don't see how any harm can come of not passing along this information."

Kadaz will also argue for a day of rest to sharpen weapons, clean armor, and buy digging equipment.

Mira
Monday February 7th, 2005 6:04:08 PM

Returning from the baths feeling quite a bit better, Mira will none the less keep her opinions about what happened underground to herself. The normally vociferous sorcerer remains somewhat subdued, although she does indicate her agreement with Kadaz's suggestion for a day of rest.

If the rest of the party agree, Mira will hole up in her room, the blanket drawn between her side of the room and Evan's as she re-reads her scrolls. She smiles secretly to herself as she remembers that the Sleep scroll worked out pretty well.

Uriel
Monday February 7th, 2005 8:46:31 PM

Uriel accompanies the woman back to her home and then heads back with the bulk of the group to the baths.

Afterwards, he settles down for a small meal at Samsons. Back at the apartment, he waits to hear what the guard says about the goblins.

Conner
Monday February 7th, 2005 9:11:45 PM

Like the rest, Conner heads for the bath-house. On his way back to the apartment, he drops a few SP and picks up a small keg of ale. Setting it on the common room table, he taps it, and pours himself a generous serving in one of the apartment's mismatched mugs. Waving at the others to help themselves, the fighter enquires about the disposal of the equipment confiscated from the goblin lair after laying the items out on the table.

4 warhammers
1 chain shirt
2 short swords

With a frown, he comments, "too bad they're all small sized. Shall I take them to the Catacombs and trade them in?"

Mira (second illegal post)
Monday February 7th, 2005 9:15:43 PM

Hearing the rumble of the fighter's voice, and not wanting to miss out on the discussion, Mira exits her room. "Don't forget these", she says, adding 5 potions and a curious amulet* to the items on the table. "The potions are of healing, but I know not the strength. We should keep them. I know nothing of the trinket from 'round the goblin chief's neck."

*(OOC: DM Kathy, there was mention of the amulet in the post of Jan. 18, 2005, and Mira pocketed it Jan. 20, 2005.)

DM Kathy
Monday February 7th, 2005 9:33:34 PM

Shadow leaves the group for a time, to bathe and return to his lodgings. [The thieves don't have a guildhall per se, but members know how to contact one another]. Shadow gets in touch with his Guild contact, who also pays 400 gold for the defeat of the goblins.

Meanwhile, the rest of the group gathers after bathing and resting. The main topic of discussion is what to do next. Go after the remaining goblins? Trade in the loot?

At any rate, the groups money problems seem to be over for the time being.

[About that amulet--I kind of messed up. I misread my notes. The goblin leader was supposed to have a magic amulet, but was not supposed to have magic short swords. So let's say the amulet turns out to be some superstitious goblin voodoo that isn't actually good for anything. :) Sorry for the confusion.]

Arm
Tuesday February 8th, 2005 5:08:50 AM

Upon returning to the apartment, tired but refreshed, Arm drops the bounty on the table and says, "I'm all for going back, but not until we're fully rested and prepared.".

Evan
Tuesday February 8th, 2005 5:42:31 AM

Evan agrees that the weapons should be taken to the catacombs and traded in, unless someone can use any of the weapons. He, himself would be interested in one of the short swords were it not so small that it doesn't fit his grip well. He also approves of taking a day of rest. Perhaps it will help the remaining goblins relax their vilgil slightly or even give them enough time to leave the city altogether.

Mira
Tuesday February 8th, 2005 11:16:21 PM

"Conner, take the gear to the Catacombs and see what you can get for it. Mira looks at the coins Arm has set on the table. "Divy everything up evenly all around?" she asks, raising an eyebrow.

Moving 'round the table to stand next to the bard, she smiles at the man. "I appreciated your singing down there. It gave me courage when my heart felt weak." The sorcerer looks at her hands, then back up at Arm, and continues, "I also wish to thank you for your support when I was tired and did not feel like I could go on."

Uriel
Tuesday February 8th, 2005 11:29:38 PM

Uriel agrees on the taking of the gear to the Catacombs. "I think we should take a day off before trying to go back."

"Arm, did the guard say anything about investigating the tunnels?" he asks, curious at the lack of interest by the city.

Conner
Tuesday February 8th, 2005 11:47:51 PM

Rising from his seat, the tatooed man quaffs the last of his ale. He collects the small sized military equipment into a plain sack. "The Catacombs then," he says, throwing the sack over his shoulder. "Back soon."

DM Kathy
Wednesday February 9th, 2005 12:06:07 AM

You agree to rest a day before taking any further action with the goblin tunnels.

Arm, you remember that the Guard didn't say anything about pursuing the goblins. In fact, they seemed pleased with the group's work, and that's why they offered the reward.

Conner volunteers to take the magic items to the Catacombs and sell them.

Arm
Wednesday February 9th, 2005 6:11:05 AM

Arm takes Mira's hands in his, smiles and says, "As far as the singing goes, my dear, that IS what I do best, after all. In regards to our little talk, think nothing further about it...you are just as important as any OTHER member of this group and there were MANY a time when your assistance was essential to our survival. It's the least that I could do.".

After saying so, he pauses for a moment in silent reflection, "Alas, who in the Wold is here to comfort ME, though...so much grief, so much suffering...". He bows his head for a moment before remembering that Uriel addressed him as well. With a tired expression, he answers him, "I informed the guard of our exploits as well as the possibility of returning to route to rest of them, and they seemed satisfied with what we have ALREADY accomplished, so it seems they don't even CARE if we finish what we've started...if we go back, we may end up risking our lives yet again for little or no reward from the guard.". After pausing a moment, he continues, "I feel that I should apologize to you for my recent actions...you of course are correct in your beliefs, but I have had an ingrained hatred since my youth of all things orcish as you already know, and it goes against everything I believe in to keep ANY of them alive any longer than necessary. I sincerely hope that you can understand my feelings and forgive my transgressions.". Saying so, he rises and holds out his hand to Uriel.

Kadaz
Wednesday February 9th, 2005 11:12:58 AM

Kadaz thinks about Arm's words. "Arm, I don't entirely agree with you. I was raised in Plateau City and was a member of the Guard. I feel strongly about the safety of my friends and those who can't defend themselves. Pursuing the goblins may not be lucrative but it is the right thing to do. I like to think we're not mercernaries, just looking for the best paying job. Rather, I want to do right. So reward or no, I vote for pursuing.

"On the other hand, I promise to abide by the majority vote of the group. What does everyone else think we should do?"

Mira
Wednesday February 9th, 2005 12:43:04 PM

Mira listens to the debate over the profitability of re-examining the underground tunnels versus persuing other opportunities.

"Perhaps we could make a map of the tunnels and what we found. The city officials might be interested in what is underneath them." Mira pauses for a moment, before continuing, "if the guard were not aware of the goblins, maybe someone else might know something. We could make some enquiries, and learn if the disapperance of folks from the city has been a long time occurance or a recent phenomenon." Mira pauses again, rubs her forehad with one hand, and adds, "if an inspection of the tunnels prooves the goblins are gone, we should seal up the entry way to ensure nothing else takes up residence below."

Shadow
Wednesday February 9th, 2005 4:17:13 PM

Shadow will return to the group with the reward from the guild.

Listening to the conversation, "I think the reason the guards are indifferent is that they believe the goblins are gone. I for one am not up for trying to excavate the collapse."

Conner
Wednesday February 9th, 2005 10:40:22 PM

Conner makes his way to The Catacombs and begins the process of selling the items relieved from the goblin warriors.

Uriel
Wednesday February 9th, 2005 10:52:02 PM

Uriel's mouth opens and shuts twice like a fish gasping for air.

He shakes his head and then looks hard at Arm for a short time. Then a rare grin crosses his face and he says, "All is forgiven friend. I too have behaved badly. I am sorry also."

He takes Arm's hand and shakes it firmly. He seems then to remember the others in the room because he lets his hand drop and he says, "I don't think it would hurt to take another look at the cave in, to make sure it looks hard to tunnel through. The goblins probably just used it for an escape route and now without their chieftain they shouldn't return."

DM Kathy
Thursday February 10th, 2005 1:54:25 AM

Arm and Uriel reconcile their differences--to the relief, I'm sure, of their companions. Will this truce last? Time will tell.

Meanwhile, Conner heads to the Catacombs to sell the goblins' gear, and the group rests for a day.

I still don't think we have a decision--are you going back down into the tunnels?

Evan
Thursday February 10th, 2005 5:35:33 AM

Evan takes some time durinmg the day to visit Ariel and take her for a nice long ride, thinking about the events that have occured. Upon returning, he offers his opinion to the group. The cave-in works both ways. It not only keeps us from chasing after the goblins but it also keeps them from returning to the caves. I think a quick trip down to make sure the cave-in is solid, maybe drop a little more of the ceiling down to completely seal the escape route. But we might want to consider offering the living space in the gobl,in caves to some of the less fortunate that are living in the streets, in the elements. This way, if the goblins return, there will be a sort of early warning system in place. If people start disappearing, we can head back down into the tunnels. After having his say, Evan sits back to work on his gear, leaving the decision making to those more capable.

Arm
Thursday February 10th, 2005 6:07:00 AM

Arm looks at Kadaz and smiles, "You are right as usual, my friend...I should have looked beyond the thought of reward to the bigger issue at hand.". Looking to Evan, he disagrees, "I don't believe letting the indigent live in the caves is a good idea. If the goblins, OR something else, comes along, they'll have no way to defend themselves, and by the time we find out about it, it will already be too late. Nay, I think it best that we go back and finish what we've started, and maybe THEN, when we're sure that no other threat will occur, we can offer shelter to those less fortunate...That's of course, if they'd CHOOSE to spend their lives in a cave...I for one would rather live in the daylit junkyard than in a dark cave.".

OOC: In short, I vote to go back. :)

Shadow
Thursday February 10th, 2005 10:32:33 AM

Not sure about what he could offer about making sure the cave in is solid, Shadow will say, "We should go back and check about no more goblins, but collapsing more of the ceiling?" Shadow will give Evan a look like, 'How would we know how to do that?'

OOC: Shadow says go back!

Kadaz
Thursday February 10th, 2005 12:52:27 PM

"Hey!" Kadaz shouts at Arm. "What's wrong with living underground?" Kadaz tries to look fierce but then breaks out into a smile to show he's joking. "I think that you will find few humans who like to live underground. But going back just to make sure the tunnel is securely blocked does make sense to me. Let's do this tomorrow."

It takes Kadaz almost the whole day to thoroughly clean all the blood out of the links of his chain mail armor. As he does he has lots of time to think of more questions. He'll bring these up at Sampson's that night:

- Would Narina know the names of any of the humans eaten by the goblins? At least these families would know the fate of their missing ones.
- Did Narina see if the goblins took any humans with them as they retreated?
- Should the shaft leading to the caves be sealed to prevent anyone from falling down, or should it be clearly marked for the occasional inspection?
- If the entrance wasn't in the trash pile maybe the group could live down there, rent free.
- Who actually owns the trash pile? The city?
- How many other tunnels are there under Plateau City?

Uriel
Thursday February 10th, 2005 8:11:16 PM

Uriel wakes up early during the day off and trains for 2 hours. Afterwards, he heads off to do his devotions at the temple.

He will speak to one of the priests if they aren't too busy about the apparent indifference of the city about the goblins in the poor section of the city.

Mira
Thursday February 10th, 2005 11:01:36 PM

Although she isn't crazy about returning to the tunnels, Mira will agree to be a part of the group should they determine a recon is necessary.

She voices her opinion that collapsing the tunnels isn't a good idea since it might undermine the ground in the Shanty Quarter, "and those folks already have enough problems."

"Before we do any more investigating, we should refit ourselves. How say you we divide up the loot?" she adds, "and does everyone have a potion for healing?"

Conner
Thursday February 10th, 2005 11:52:51 PM

The fighter spends time at the catacombs getting the weapons and armour identified before selling them.

DM Kathy
Friday February 11th, 2005 2:12:26 AM

Kadaz has some questions, at least some of which can be answered by Narina. She did say that the other human prisoners were "all dead," which would seem to mean that no live prisoners accompanied the goblins--but you could always ask her specifically.

Uriel spends some time at the temple. He finds a young acolyte with whom to discuss the disparity he has seen over the past few days--the filth and squalor of the Shanty Quarter contrasted with the wealth and wonders of the rest of Plateau City. The acolyte smiles sadly. "Out of sight, out of mind," she says. "Most in Plateau City never see the Shanty Quarter, or the people who live there." She sighs. "I shall speak to my superiors. Perhaps the temple can do something, though what I do not know."

Later that day, you all retrace your steps to the scrap heap and the abandoned well. The place hasn't gotten any less depressing overnight.

You descend to the goblin tunnels, which you find exactly as you left them. You make your way to where the rockfall is. You begin unpiling the stones. It's hard, messy, unpleasant work, but you do manage to clear an opening. Peering in through the clouds of dust you've raised, you see another tunnel leading away. It is sized for goblins, so it would be an uncomfortable passage for most of you.

Beyond the dust raised by the rockfall and your efforts to clear it, you can clearly see the tracks of several goblins heading down the passage.

Friday February 11th, 2005 5:51:46 AM

Arm laughs as well at Kadaz' feigned consternation, then says to Mira, "We were all equally involved in the operation, so I say that we should share the bounty equally. Alas, I am bereft of healing potions, so I would definitely appreciate at least one of them, if you wouldn't mind.".

Back in the caves, Arm looks curiously at the tracks, trying to determine if they are new since the party was there last, but his tracking skills are sadly lacking, so he resorts to looking around for trouble, since the ruckus from the excavation prevents him from hearing much else (spot=23, listen=6).

Once the group gets back to the cave-in Shadow remains in the back of the group as they start unpiling rocks. "I did think we were going to leave it alone, but since we can see through it I imagine we are going to need to follow it to it's source." the rogue says as he sneezes from the dust raised.

He will peer into the gloom hoping to see something uselful. Once the group has determined to go down the tunnel, Shadow will take point with Evan again both following and searching. (Listen=13, spot=3,

Mira hands one of the potions to Arm. It is the one that was taken from the goblin leader. "I know this will restore your health should you be injured, however I do not know it's potency. It was the vial taken from the goblin leader, so it may be more powerful than those taken from the regular soldiers."

Mira will explore the tunnels with her mates. Light cross-bow in hand, she will scan the area to see if there is anything she might have missed since last she was underground. (Search=16, Spot=9)

Sunday February 13th, 2005 5:23:56 PM

The fighter waits patiently at the counter of The Catacombs.

Uriel
Sunday February 13th, 2005 7:59:11 PM

Uriel stands at the ready at the back of the group.

DM Kathy
Sunday February 13th, 2005 10:19:41 PM

Evan is easily able to follow the tracks, and it looks as if the goblins were fleeing as fast as they could. After several minutes of traveling, the tunnel begins sloping downward. After a few more minutes, the tunel dives abruptly downward and becomes much smaller. The goblins themselves would have had to crawl through that part of the tunnel; you simply will not fit. It would seem your pursuit can go no farther.

You deduce that this was a designed escape tunnel, and that the narrow "crawl-through" was deliberate, to foil any larger creatures that might be pursuing the tribe. Kadaz and Wilfire, with their dwarven senses, realize that the tunnel is pretty deep underground at this point, and surmise that it leads to an exit somewhere on the Second Plateau.

Mira
Sunday February 13th, 2005 11:03:28 PM

"I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade," Mira looks meaningfully at the dwarves, "what with your passion for tunnels and all" the sorcerer laughs, "but I think this is the end of our hunt for goblins." Turning to the paladin, she suggests, "Uriel, why don't we take your most excellent map to the city authorities. Someone in the engineering department might be interested in what is going on underneath Plateau City."

With a yawn, the sorcerer turns to Evan and signs, I wonder how Conner made out at the Catacombs?

Evan
Monday February 14th, 2005 5:33:37 AM

Although a little disappointed that they did not catch up with the goblins, Evan is also glad. While he enjoys the excitment of a good fight, he realizes such a fight could have disaterous consquences as well. Without thinking, he slips his arm around Mira's waist as he signs to her, Let's go find out. its a bit stuffy down here.

Arm
Monday February 14th, 2005 6:02:35 AM

Arm smiles at Mira and says, "Thank you, my dear...I will make sure I use it only in time of dire need.".

Turning to Evan he asks, "Do you think that someday it would be possible for you to teach ME your sign language as well? Actually, it would probably be best for us ALL to learn it, as you never know when it would come in handy to speak to you silently.".

Saying so, he prepares to return to the surface as well.

Kadaz
Monday February 14th, 2005 6:46:55 AM

Kadaz peers down through the too-narrow corridor disappointedly. "And don't come back" he yells loudly down it. The echoes reverberate between the narrow walls and seem to go on for a long time.

"OK." he says as he turns. "I feel better now."

Conner
Monday February 14th, 2005 7:39:00 AM

Conner makes his way back to the apartment with the proceeds from the sale of the weapons and armor. Once there, he awaits the return of the party with a smug grin.

Shadow  d20+6=16 d20+6=17
Monday February 14th, 2005 10:11:37 AM

Shadow is actually relieved that they cannot pursue the creatures further, but thinks back to what some of the others had said earlier. "I think I would prefer to rig up some type of trap here, so that if the dirty creatures do try to come back we can discourage them further." With that said, Shadow will see if there is any way he can setup a tripwire to cause some rocks to fall down the passageway. (Disable Device [setting a device]=16 Use Rope=17)

Uriel
Monday February 14th, 2005 6:53:07 PM

As the group descends into the tunnel, Uriel gets a bit edgy. He is clearly the largest of the group and with his armor and array of weapons he feels the confined space keenly.

He continues to make small comments like, "Isn't this about far enough," and "We can worry about them when they come back"

When the group stops at the narrow tunnel leading almost straight down, he wipes his brow and smiles. "Well it looks like it was an escape route."

He flinches at Kadaz's yell down into the tunnel and volunteers to lead the way back out now that the group is done exploring down...

DM Kathy
Monday February 14th, 2005 11:12:29 PM

You return to the surface and make it back to the apartment without incident. The mystery of the disappearances from the Shanty Quarter would seem to have been solved, although the resolution is not as happy as you would have hoped.

If you ask her, Narina is able to give you a couple of names, and word of what happened quickly spreads through the Quarter. Within a matter of days, even people who didn't hear specifically from you have a pretty good idea what happened to their loved ones.

In the meantime, you have a few days to relax and divvy up the spoils of your latest success.

Conner
Monday February 14th, 2005 11:46:43 PM

Conner looks up from sharpening his blade when the others return. "Have a look in the bag!" he speaks out and points to the bulging sac on the table.

"Any luck tracking down the last of the goblins?" he inquires.

Arm
Tuesday February 15th, 2005 5:47:06 AM

Arm grimaces and relates the results of their most recent sojurn to Conner, while he looks into the bag to see what joy he brought. All the while, his thoughts return once again to the ravishing redhead at Samson's, and after the spoils are divided, he makes plans to head over there to hopefully spend some quality time with her, assuming that she is still about.

Evan
Tuesday February 15th, 2005 6:32:34 AM

Evan is more than happy to teach anyone who wants to learn his hand language. Although, secretly, he sort of enjoyed being able to talk so privately to Mira.

Although he would prefer reclosing the tunnel and perhaps bringing back some morter to permanently seal the tunnel, he can tell the others want to leave. Once they get back, he relaxes, taking some time to spend with Ariel, who surely must be getting restless, being in a stable so much.

Shadow
Tuesday February 15th, 2005 11:56:25 AM

Shadow will return with the group to the apartment. "Is that offer of a place to stay still open?" Shadow asks, he now realizes that his continuing with the group will be facilitated by him being with the group almost all the time. He realizes that he can return and update the guild occasionally, and that will suffice to the guild. (hopefully)

Kadaz
Tuesday February 15th, 2005 5:14:50 PM

"So let's count our gold!" exclaims Kadaz. It looks to him like there are several bags with more gold than he has ever seen. And some of it is his! He stands next to the table bouncing up and down with excitement. Birdie catches his mood and runs around the room yipping.

Mira
Tuesday February 15th, 2005 7:38:23 PM

"Okay, Conner! Whatcha' got for us?" asks the mage when she spots the bag on the table.

Uriel
Tuesday February 15th, 2005 11:44:21 PM

Uriel looks at the bulging sacks with surprise.
"Wow, that looks like alot of coin!"

{OOC: Everyone - could we have an opinion on the party shares - one argument 10 percent, another one equal share and another argument 2 party shares
The tally so far:
argument 1:1
argument 2:1
argument 3:2
}

DM Kathy
Wednesday February 16th, 2005 3:15:34 AM

[Forgot to mention this yesterday] On the way out of the goblin tunnels, Shadow is successfully able to rig a trap for anyone coming back. He wasn't able to conceal the device quite as well as he would have liked, but he's pretty sure it's going to be effective.

Back at the apartment, the group is greeted with Conner's excellent news of success in the Catacombs. Providing he isn't holding out (let me know if you are), there's over 13,000 gp in the bulging sack.

Dividing up this princely sum would seem to be the next task. And, as always, there's the question of what to call yourselves. :)

Evan
Wednesday February 16th, 2005 5:58:40 AM

Evan waits until Mira has divided up the money, trusting her judgement in all things finacial. Once she is done, he collects his money and heads off to the catacombs, hoping that he might finally have enough for something he wants and needs.

(I suggested 10% as that is the amount you tithe to a church, it should be a sufficent amount to tithe to a party fund.)

Arm
Wednesday February 16th, 2005 6:08:10 AM

Arm smiles broadly at the amount of gold they have accumulated..."Finally, a tidy sum for our troubles," he thinks. Once the sum is divided, he will head over to the catacombs as well to hopefully pick up some armor or a finer sword.

OOC: I agree...10% should be enough for a party fund. To have an extra party share (or 2) could end up either shorting US in the long run, or in this case, have an EXCESS of cash.

Uriel
Wednesday February 16th, 2005 9:03:09 AM

{OOC: Excess party funds is the point guys - for raise dead spells, or other major healing spells, for special equipment purchases, etc. We want the amount in there to cover these kind of things. In my opinion and my experience in local games, you need more than 10 percent for these things, usually alot more.}

{Vote Tally update from earlier post
argument 1:2 Evan and Arm
argument 2:1 Conner
argument 3:2 Uriel and Shadow
}

Kadaz
Wednesday February 16th, 2005 10:07:27 AM

Kadaz also supports setting aside 10% as a group fund. But we'd better find a safe spot to hide this money!

Shadow
Wednesday February 16th, 2005 10:32:45 AM

OOC: Kathy if no one is holding out, exactly how much do we have? It looks like the majority of the people feel it should be 1 share or 10 % (Uriel and I being out voted), which is fine with Shadow. No one did answer Shadow about staying at the apartment, but I figure it is not a problem. He will leave a few things behind at the guild (to hold his space just in case, always good to have a backup), but will move most of his stuff into the apartment.

Once the money is divided up he will join Arm in going to the Catacombs to possible purchase some items.

(Okay, it seems I should know this, but this is the first time I need to purchase something in the game, so could someone let me know how the Catacombs works? Please.)

Wilfire Ironhouse
Wednesday February 16th, 2005 7:00:42 PM

OOC- 10% is fine with Wilfire. After collecting his share of the money he will also go to the catacombs to purchase equipment.

OOC2- sorry I haven't posted lately. i was busy enjoying my Lunar New Year vacation.

Mira
Wednesday February 16th, 2005 8:07:30 PM

Mira supports the idea of a party fund, either 1 share or 2 shares is okay with her. If a tie breaker is required, she will support 2 shares.

"Shadow, I believe there is a spare bed in Uriel's chamber. We are bunked up two to a room. For myself, I am more than pleased if you were to join us."

The sorcerer will wait to learn the final tally of her cut before retiring to her room and taking inventory of her goods. She will start a list on a piece of cheap paper, secure in the knowledge that some serious shopping is required.

Uriel
Wednesday February 16th, 2005 10:48:46 PM

Uriel shakes his head. "I don't think this is a good idea but fair is fair. We were outvoted. Ten percent it is."

To Shadow, "As Mira mentioned I have an extra bed in my room that you are welcome to."

{After the final tally, Uriel will assess his funds and try to decide what he could buy from the catacombs}

Conner
Wednesday February 16th, 2005 11:34:28 PM

Having never seen so much money at any one time in any one place, Conner just sits on the bench grinning happily at the pile and at his friends.

When the debate over loot distribution appears completed, he picks up a small piece of crumpled parchment. "Okay then, 13,636* GP and 2 SP split 9 ways puts a little more than 10% in the kitty and 1,515 GP and 13 SP in each of our pockets!" The big fighter brings his fist down hard on the table, causing the coins to jump. "Wooohooo!" he howls joyously.

* (OOC: that includes the 400 GP from the goblin ears, and the 400 GP given to Shadow, nothing held back.)

Mira (second illegal post)  d20+8=21
Wednesday February 16th, 2005 11:57:25 PM

"Don't forget the potions!" cries the mage, "they do not belong to me, though I hold them. I have given one to Arm, for he wished it and was the only one who responded to my offer. I have 2 potions of curing for myself, but there are these 4 that were taken from the golins. If there are any who have none, or only one, please speak up now."

If no one claims a potion Mira will hold on to them with plans to distribute them at a later date as needed. Uncorking one of the containers, she sniffs it, tastes a tiny drop, and studies the colour comparing it with the potions of Cure Light Wounds she already knows. (Profession alchemist=21)

(OOC: To visit the Catacombs, return to the Games page, and click on Catacombs. When you first log on to post, you will get your instructions, but you might want to read some of the transactions first, to get the hang of it.)

DM Kathy
Thursday February 17th, 2005 12:37:59 AM

Mira is readily able to identify four of the potions as Cure Light Wounds. The fifth, the one from the goblin leader, she is not as sure about, although she knows it's a Cure of some kind. Probably Cure Moderate. [Just a reminder - the potions are also labeled in Goblin.]

After dividing up the gold, many of the companions depart for the Catacombs to spend it.

[OOC: Carla provided a pretty good description of the Catacombs, and the instructions are pretty much right where you go to post. You purchase things in character, which is fun for people not playing a shy character who stammers. :) ]

Arm
Thursday February 17th, 2005 5:57:15 AM

After a moments reflection, Arm says to Uriel, "I hope that you're not offended by our decision of 10%, but I see no reason for us to NOT be able to change our decision at a later date should the conditions warrant. In the meantime, should I have any excess gold left over from the trip to the catacombs, I wouldn't have a problem with chipping in for something should the party need it.".

Arm then sets off for the catacombs with the others to see what he may purchase.

OOC: As far as storing the gold is concerned, is there a Gringott's in town?? ;) Seriously, if we can find a bank of some sort, there's a possibility we can actually earn some interest on our dough, but of course that'd be up to Kathy or the others powers that be.

Evan
Thursday February 17th, 2005 6:28:32 AM

(By my calculations of subtracting 10% from the total, we should each get 1534 gp. There was 1 gold 2 silver left over and if there is no objections, I suggest that be tossed into the party tithe for a total of 1364 gold 2 silver. Is this what we are doing? Or are we following Conner's numbers?)

Shadow
Thursday February 17th, 2005 10:32:30 AM

"Thank you for allowing me to stay with the group." Shadow says to both Mira and Uriel. He will move his stuff into the room indicated by Uriel.

When Mira starts talking about potions of healing, Shadow will say, "I have two potions that will do much more than those four we found with the goblins, so I would be willing to put one of them into the group 'pot' and take one of the lesser healing potions if that is okay." (OOC: putting a cure moderate wounds potion into the group pot and taking a cure light wounds potion from Mira)

Upon seeing the final amount of gold, Shadow's eyes bulge, for he has never seen this much gold in one place. He can not believe that by agreeing to work with this group that he would come into so much so quickly. He thinks back to his poor dead mother and how hard she worked to get a couple of coppers to buy them something to eat. Once the group has got the correct total for each of them he will gather his up and follow the members over to the Catacombs.

(OOC: Thanks for the info on the Catacombs, I will try and do that later today.)

Kadaz
Thursday February 17th, 2005 11:18:01 AM

Kadaz watches as the money is counted out on the table into 10 piles. He then scoops his share into a bag and carefully hides it away. "OK. Let's go to the Catacombs." He thinks of all the things he might be able to buy. Then he looks down. What might a dog want? Do they make doggie sized armor?

Uriel
Thursday February 17th, 2005 12:01:54 PM

Uriel says, "You are a welcome addition to our little band of adventurers, Shadow".

"Let's go do some shopping Everyone!"

{OOC: Conner did an equal share rather than a flat 10% for the calculation of the treasure division. - I think it works our to 11% rather than 10%. Let's just go with the equal share, it sounds more in character than 10 percent - is that ok? That would make Conner's calculation correct.}

Mira
Thursday February 17th, 2005 1:10:37 PM

The sorcerer sweeps her share of the gold into a plain fabric bag, anxious to make her claim before anyone changes their mind about the division of the spoils.

"That is very sweet, Shadow, but please keep your more potent potion of curing. You put yourself at greater risk when you scout ahead for our little group and will have need of it."

Turning to the group the sorcerer reports, I believe I have identified these potions as Cure Light Wounds. However, if someone is able to read the inscription and confirm my identification I would be grateful."

(OOC: Any further discussion about distribution of the cure potions will be taken to e-mail. If everyone is good in that regard, Mira will hold on to them, and hand them out as needed in combat.)

Wilfire Ironhouse
Thursday February 17th, 2005 8:10:45 PM

Wilfire sweeps his piles of gold into his pouch and carefully stores it away in his backpack. Next he takes the pouch on his belt and puts a few sling stones inside it.

"Ready to go a shoppin" Wilfire says as he takes his flail in hand and follows the others.

DM Kathy
Friday February 18th, 2005 1:59:01 AM

You discuss your newfound wealth, which most of you plan to spend. Arm brings up the possibility of investing or "banking" the funds someplace.

You have not heard of such a place nearby, although those who grew up in the city (Mira and Kadaz, right?) think that the Gold Quarter would be a good place to look.

Conner
Friday February 18th, 2005 7:45:14 AM

Looking very pleased with himself, the fighter collects his share of the coins and prepares to follow the others to the catacombs.

Shadow
Friday February 18th, 2005 10:27:59 AM

Shadow is happy and nervous about going to the Catacombs because he has heard about the wonderous place, but has never been there.

OOC: Sorry Kathy that the post is really short (and not very detailed), but unsure of what to say because most of the group is at the catacombs (or going to it) and will be doing individual posts there.

Arm
Friday February 18th, 2005 10:31:33 AM

Arm waits patiently for the halfling in the Catcombs to respond to his inquiry.

Mira
Friday February 18th, 2005 6:42:42 PM

"Who would be interested in going to the Gold Quarter?" enquires the mage. "I seem to recall there are those who will keep money safe for folks, and even provide a return on the investment if one is willing to take the risk."

Mira thinks the Gold Quarter might be a good place to scout around for their next job, but she doesn't voice her opinion. She just plans to keep her eyes and ears open for opportunities.

(OOC: How about role playing the search for a 'banker' and searching out new leads for adventure, simultaneous with the Catacombs transactions? Kind of like being in two places at the same time. ;-)

Kadaz
Saturday February 19th, 2005 8:21:13 PM

Kadaz tries to remember any bits of lore he may have overheard in the guards barracks. "I'm afraid that I was never assigned to the section of town that had enough extra coins to need to worry about this. But I'll keep thinking about it."
