DM Bob & Carla Wednesday February 16th, 2005 11:28:14 PM
Merryn checks the bodies of the bugbear guards, and sees a large iron ring with several keys protruding obviously from under one of the creatures. Bralin drags the bodies away, and a small pouch* falls from the pocket of one of the bugbears. Lorth and Arminas move over to the closed cell. Peering through the narrow grated opening the paladin can see an emaciated form hanging from shackles fixed into the rough hewn rock walls. His head hangs to one side, eyes closed. He is bruised and there is dried blood over the many cuts that cover his body.
Harvest checks the stairwell. Having dispatched the bugbears quickly and silently, there is no one to sound the alarm and warn those occupying the castle. A breeze from above causes faint flickering of the torches, but there is no enemy heard or seen.
Muffled screams can be heard by everyone through the thick stone door at the far end of the cell block. With his ear pressed against the door, Andrath hears a little more, Highlight to display spoiler: { as a dispassionate, emotionless voice announces, "you will tell us what you know of our plans and who has provided you with information"...(muffled sounds, and whimpering)..."who knows the true identity of Reithvar? Maya Duma?"...(a stifled scream)..."the Flett...family?" A deeper voice joins the other, "the attack plan! What do they know? Do they suspect?"...(a keening wail, followed by a low moan)...}.
* (Pouch contains 10 GP)
Lorth (AC 17, HP 45) Thursday February 17th, 2005 7:39:38 AM
When Lorth hears the muffled screams coming from the next room he says, "I'm sorry but you must wait a while longer for aid." to the man in the cell. He then moves down to the door where Andrath is listening, and readies himself for the assault on the room. "We must move quickly and save whoever is screaming from further torture.", Lorth says, clearly agitated.
Merryn d20+8=23 d20+6=11 Thursday February 17th, 2005 8:19:13 AM
Grabbing the key ring, Merryn moves over to Andrath and shows him the find. "These may be of assistance in getting to those on the other side. We should let that poor man hanging in the cell down at least before moving on. He should, at least, be allowed to rest a bit and perhaps we can offer him a little food?"
Merryn goes over to the cell and looks into it, feeling pity in his heart for the poor captive.
Merryn keeps his senses about him as he waits for the party's next move (Listen: 23; Spot: 11).
Harvest d20+6=24 Thursday February 17th, 2005 8:41:19 AM
To leave it open for a swift exit? Or to close it against the possibility of attackers from behind?
At last, Harvest closes the door, cutting off the stairway.
She turns back to the scene of cells, seeking, and muffled screams from beyond the far door. The brown girl is drawn to the cell from which low groans emerge, even as Andrath Silverhand and the paladin Lorth conduct business at the far door.
Harvest Moon's face pulls into a wince of sympathy as she sees the shackled man suffering from his many wounds. From her pouch, she pulls a leather wrapped bundle. Seating herself, she spreads various bits of cloth and pots of herbal mixture upon the lap of her robe. For the shackles, she can do little. But for the wounds ...
"What is your name?" small brown girl asks as she cleanses the man's wounds. "I am Harvest Moon." Her ministrations are all small things, still she attempts to make him as comfortable as possible. (Heal 24)
Arminas (AC 18, HP 25/25) Thursday February 17th, 2005 10:50:59 AM
Arminas moves to the stone door with Andrath, and whispers.
"This time, lets have a plan decided on prior to opening the door. I think I should get two arrows off before the others make it to our foes. Better to have one dead or wounded first."
Arminas then takes a vial from his pouch and coats ten arrows with an oil.
OOC: Assuming I can coat the 10 arrows in a round, if not then just the number of arrows possible in that amount of time.
Bralin (Ac 19, 45/45 hp, Bulls Strength) Thursday February 17th, 2005 1:02:52 PM
Bralin holds up the small bag of coin so the others can see it, and then pockets it for safekeeping.
Seeing some of his comrades preparing to assault another room, the dwarf pulls a scroll, casts a spell on himself, puts the scroll away, readies his axe, and takes position by Lorth at the door.
He never says a word. [Bulls Strength - 3 minutes]
Andrath (AC24, 30/30 hp, Shield 5 rounds remaining) Thursday February 17th, 2005 10:31:20 PM
Andrath, at the far door, whispers loud enough for everyone to hear, "Get over here! That guy in the cell is fine for a few minutes. Someone is being tortured on the other side of this door; he may only have a few more seconds."
"Arminas, I am going to throw the door open, you get ready to fire through it, aim for someone out of armour if you have the chance. Bralin, you and Lorth are through next, then Harvest Moon, then me, then Merryn last of all. Engage as quickly as possible. Lorth, good move last time moving to flanking for me. You or Bralin try that again."
"We need to take one of the enemines on the other side of this door alive, preferbly the one asking all the questions."
All ready? Let's go!"
DM Bob & Carla Friday February 18th, 2005 12:37:32 AM
Harvest Moon quietly closes the door at the base of the stairs, and goes over to stand by Merryn. She assembles ingredients in preparation to minister to the wounded prisoner once his cell is opened. "Langdon. They've got Langdon," the man whisper's hoarsely when the small monk addresses him.
Arminus is able to dump the magical oil unceremoniously on the 10 arrows. (Please roll a D10 for the number of arrows that will receive sufficient coating to carry the magic) and take a place by the stone door alongside Andrath, and Lorth. They are soon joined by Bralin, axe at the ready, as the rogue, hand on the door, pushes it open.
Behind the door lies a room some 50 feet by 50 feet filled with various devices, some of which are recognizable, others which are not. A few flickering torches cast an eerie light, and deep shadows along the walls and in the corners. A half naked man lies on an oak table in the center of the room, secured to it with manacles at the hands and feet. A drain in the floor beneath the table carries away any bodily fluids that might escape those secured to the table. A figure dressed in black hunches over the moaning man on the table. He looks up with black, cold eyes as the door opens and mumbles a string of words. There is movement on the right, as the stone door swings wide.
Bralin (Ac 19, 45/45, Bulls Strength, power attack[3]) d20+8=11 Friday February 18th, 2005 8:06:59 AM
Andrath wants the human at the table alive. Keeping enemies alive is not something Bralin excels at.
The dwarf therefore chooses to engage whoever is on the right side of the room. He steps into the room and immediately heads for the person in the right corner, swinging his axe wildly as he comes within range.
[Atk H2. Hit ac11 (guessing thats a miss)]

Hearing the urgency in Andrath's command, Merryn rushes over to the door. He waits his turn to run in and then quickly runs in and turns to the right, engaging the enemy by the door. Merryn comes down on the foe with his spear hard, trying to disable him with the spear (AC 21 for DMG 5).
Lorth (AC 17, HP 45) Friday February 18th, 2005 8:31:41 AM
Lorth goes straight for the man dressed in black at the center of the room. As he crosses the room he stares directly at the thing in black and says, "As Gargul as my witness, I will lay thee low, foul creature." (Double move around the table, so Lorth is not able to attack this round)

Harvest (AC21, HP 28/28) d20+8=23 d20+7=24 Friday February 18th, 2005 10:52:43 AM
Things move very quickly.
"When events pull one swiftly along in their wake, Boo, it is often best to seek a place for quiet reflection." Little Boo Moon had then asked Pasix what a "wake" was and the lesson had gone on to various and sundry places from there.
Harvest Moon lets the swabs and tinctures fall to the floor. She moves swiftly across cold stone floor to the doorway where she takes in the situation with a glance. Then she ducks quietly to the right, out of the view of those inside. The carved wood eye of Gargul in her hands, she calls divine power to bless her companions.

[OOC: I have been deducting 2 rounds of shield per post since the combat, since I figure that we are posting longer than one round per post.]
Andrath runs through the door, and moves to the side of the figure on the other side of the table, opposite Lorth, flanking. He draws his swords as he moves, and readies himself for the attacks next round. [OOC: I figure that regardless of which side you place Lorth on, Andrath can take a double move and run to the opposite side, avoiding attacks of opportunity, since he can move 60' in a double move.]
DM Bob & Carla d20+14=25 d8+13=20 d20+10=29 Saturday February 19th, 2005 10:42:46 PM
Bralin darts into the room and engages the heavily armored human to the right of the door. As he nears the man, he feels his confidence robbed by the unholy aura that emanates from his foe. The dwarf's blow is easily turned aside, and before he can recover, the warrior before him deftly turns his longsword, slashes across the dwarfs chest and steps towards the back of the room. The pain is immediate and intense as the dwarf realizes that this is no ordinary weapon. [Hit AC=25, for 20 Hp, take -1 CON].
"Come to me guardians" the man intones "come to me!"
Lorth too, senses the evil that pervades the room but continues around the table to face the prisoner's torturer. A half naked man lies strapped to the table, a halo of steel surrounds his head, a number of screws penetrate the thins flesh that covers his temples. He is bruised, covered in cuts, and is now unconcious.
Arminus fires two arrows from the doorway, the first strikes the table, while the second penetrates the torturer's cloak and imbeds itself in the man's arm, just as Andrath rounds the other side of the table to confront him. He cries out in pain before stepping back to cast another spell. [Casting defensively DC=29, no AoO] The mage's outline begins to shift and waver.
Merryn and Harvest run to the door where Harvest casts her spell. [OOC Merryn cannot move far enough to engage the man on the right and have an attack]
Seeing Bralin sent sprawling from his attack, Merryn wavers in his confidence, but bolsters his courage by remembering his final goal. He cannot face this foe right now, and so he rushes headlong at the torturer, bringing the might of his spear arm to bear, though he misses miserably (ATK AC: 10).

As the torturer retreats to cast his spell, Andrath swings wildly at him. [OOC: H1 moved 10', and cast a spell, so Andrath and Lorth both get attacks of opportunity. Andrath's attack was a natural 1 miss.]
Then the elf shifts 5' to the northeast, and swings twice at the robed figure. The first swing with the longsword once again goes wild. [OOC: another natural 1 miss]. However, the backswing with the shortsword connects, drawing blood. [OOC: Hit AC20 for 7 hp damage.]

The sounds from the other side of the doorway do not sound good. The clash of steel, a sound of pain that is in what must be the voice of Bralin Stoneminder.
Much blood rolls from the wounded dwarf. Eschewing combat, Harvest Moon scuttles quickly behind the dwarven Sword of Light.
"Hurry, Andrath Silverhand," she calls as she watches the dark opponent's sword stance, "or this one will kill Bralin Stoneminder." Clutching the eye of Gargul, the brown girl lays a hand upon the dwarf's back. (CLW cure 7hp) The situation is desperate. The only alternative is to flee back through a courtyard full of orcs and hobgoblins.
"We will try our best to make time, Andrath," she replies in a voice shot through with tension.

Certain that he has struck the dread mage a heavy blow with his sword, the rogue is shocked to feel no resistance as the blade passes through the blurred image of his opponent. The paladin experiences a similar result. Merryn rushes towards the mage but the table blocks his direct line, and he cannot attack. [OOC double move to get around table]
A sneer further disfigures the pale face of the mage as he thrusts his hands, palm out, sending two missiles of magical energy directly into the rogues chest [10 HP damage]. The dread mage backs 5 feet away from both Andrath and Merryn, ignoring Lorth completely.
The blackguard facing Bralin bats away the feeble swing from the dwarf's axe, but cannot fend off Arminus' arrow which slices through his arm. Dark blood drips from the wound but he displays no pain. His evil grin shows rotted teeth as he leers at the little brown monk and taunts "you dare intercede here, child!" With a single stride he moves into position and like lightening, the vicious blade slices into the monk. Harvest Moon bites back against the reaction as it wells up inside her. But the pain of the wound beats against the damn of her will, and it rises up within her and burst from her mouth.
"DIE YOU SYPHILITIC SON OF AN INCESTUOUS PLAGUE MOTHER!!!" Bitter tears sqeeze from the corners of her eyes as she releases the bile from her soul with a tortured scream. Then, with a sharp intake of breath, it is over save for the rivlets that roll down her face.
Almost by instinct, the little brown girl moves to execute her last intended action. As Bralin Stoneminder moves through his strike, she lifts the flap on his pack and reaches for the wand within. Flowing with the motion, she dives into a roll to take her away from the dark knight. When she comes out of the roll, she finds herself between the table and the wall.

Lorth takes advantage of the mage's preoccupation with Merryn and Andrath and connects solidly with his opponent. The mage shudders under the blow and is obviously injured. Merryn moves 5 feet towards the injured mage and directly across from Lorth. His spear makes direct contact with the mage [OOC added +2 to atk for flanking, rolled 4 pts damage] A surprised look crosses the face of the mage before he falls to his knees and topples forward in a pool of blood.
On the other side of the room, the angered dwarf strikes the blackguard with his axe. The blade sinks deep into the evil ex-paladin. Arminus fires off two more of his precious magical arrows from the doorway. The first narrowly misses but the second strikes true and protrudes from the shoulder of their nemesis.
[OOC applied -4 to ranged attack into melee (note a problem with your character sheet - details to follow by e-mail)]
The monk 'sucks it up' and with some clever foot and hand coordination manages to locate the wand in Bralin's pack and tumbles behind the table and away from her dangerous opponent. As she moves away from him, the monk's sense of hope begins to return.
[OOC Sorry about the confusion re. your position on the last post - good pick up on the Shield Spell]
The badly injured blackguard can barely hold his shield. He calls out once again "Come to me guardians, I command thee!" Once again he slashes violently at the dwarf striking him across the helm and down the shoulder [Hit AC 22 for 16 HP and an additional -1 CON]. The blackguard holds his ground, perhaps too exhausted to move, perhaps goading his foes to attack.
[OOC reductions in CON can affect your HP (-1 HP per level) if the new CON has a lower ability bonus - Bralin should be at 5/41 HP]
Andrath's attempt to tumble past the dread mage is pre-empted when the mage falls to the floor.
[OOC I left you in your original position since an attack on the blackguard would have been unsuccessful - your choice within a normal move where you want to be positioned. Note information on shield spell, Andrath should be at full HP]
Just as the party believes it has gained the upper hand, Arminus hears the sound of metal dragging on stone from behind him and three roughly human sized skeletons, draped in the remains of leather armor, move rapidly towards him from behind. The skeletons are armed with longswords and their bones appear to have been sporadically fused with metal plates, giving them additional substance.
The poor tortured soul on the table twitches occasionaly and wimpers on the edge of conciousness.

Lorth leaves the prone mage to Merryn. He steps over the corpse and slips by the table, heading for the open door. [Lorth can only move 40 feet, leaving him some 10 feet from the door itself].
Merryn stabs at the dead mage with his spear, sinking the tip into the back of the man's neck at the base of the skull before moving around the table in support of Harvest and Bralin.
The dwarf begins his death song and swings his axe to the monotonous drone. The Blackguard raises his sword to parry the strike, but it is too strong and the blade cuts deep into the soldier of evil. He roars out in pain and anger but all feeling has been lost from his weapon arm and Andrath's blades finish the job as Harvest screams at him to leave.
Harvest and Bralin watch on as the last spark of life leaves the blackguard and he slumps to the stone floor at their feet. The monk activates the wand of Cure Light Wounds bringing some relief to the suffering dwarven cleric.
Meanwhile, Arminus dashes into the room and tries to close the door behind him. The three skeletons rush forward and slam into the door [Combined Strength check of 24] and manage to stop the door from closing entirely. The sounds of moaning from the prisoner in the cell can still be heard by those close to the door.
[Arminus could move and close the door in his action, latching the door would have been an additional action]

A quick reach behind her brings back the first scroll at the top of the pile within her haversack. Her lips move as she quickly reads the arcane words of power then thrusts a finger at the door. (Cast Hold Portal)

Lorth (AC 17, HP 45) Thursday February 24th, 2005 8:56:55 AM
Lorth approaches the door and says, "We cannot leave that other man in that cell, we must destroy these afronts to Gargul." He does not immediatley push the door open, but stands near it ready to swing if/when the skeletons get it open.
Arminas (AC 18, 25/25 hp) d20+2=22 Thursday February 24th, 2005 9:32:44 AM
Arminas grunts as he strains to keep the door from bursting open. With all his might, he pushes against the door.
Looking at Lorth standing there next to the door, doing nothing to help keep the door closed Arminas gives an exasperated look. When Lorth speaks, it is too much.
"Do you understand that there are three animated skeletons out there?"
Arminas takes a breath and strains against the force of the skeletons.
"Perhaps we should cure our almost dead dwarf and free Langston there before we invite the undead in for a PARTY!.
Adrenilin rushing, Arminas puts all his strength and effort into keeping the door closed.

Bralin (AC 19, 23/45hp, bulls strength, bless,-2 Con) d8+2=4 Thursday February 24th, 2005 11:40:02 AM
The overpowering feeling of despair evaporates as the foe dies. Bralin feels the healing power of Harvest's wand take hold. And he sees the commotion by the doorway.
Pausing only long enough to cast a spell upon himself [CLW (over Magic Stone) for 4 hp], the black armored dwarf forms up beside Lorth.
"Release the door," he tells Arminas. "We must fight ere they discover yon prisoner."
Arminas' plan makes much more sense. Why invite more trouble when the current trouble has not yet been resolved. Better to get Langdon on his feet than risk him to one of the skeleton's blades.
Following that line of thinking, Merryn rushes towards the door slamming into it with all his might and helping Arminas to secure it (Str. Check: 10).

Arminus struggles to keep the advancing undead from opening the door, and with Merryn's assistance manages to finally close the door entirely. The monk casts her spell and the latch magically slides into place, locking the door. Lorth and Bralin form up in front of the door, ready for battle if and when the door is opened. Andrath remains silent, standing over the body of the slain blackguard. Langdon continues to twitch and spasm in the grips of the steel halo that continues to torment him.
The skeletons persist, battering the door with their swords and metal enfused bodies. The heavy wooden door shakes under their combined onslaught, but holds.
Anyone making a listen check vs DC 12 hears the scraping of stone on stone coming from the far corner of the room. Those that do hear the noise can turn around in time to see a passage in the stone wall closing behind the twisted figure of a man, his flesh dried and stretched across his contorted frame.
Harvest (AC21, HP 14/24 -1 Con) d20+9=26 d8=1 d8=7 Friday February 25th, 2005 8:33:28 AM
The door slams shut, for the moment, locking out dried bone things that the little monk had only gotten but a momentary glimpse of.
Harvest Moon takes the moment of respite to turn the wand of healing upon herself. (Heal 8hp) The single dark jagged wound closes. And yet, some malignancy must remain, draining her energy, dragging her to fatigue.
She turns back to Bralin Stoneminder, as his wounds are twice as bad as her own. Then her ears pluck to her the sound of stone grinding upon stone.
Harvest Moon has just enough time to draw another wand from the haversack upon her back.

Merryn spins his head around as he hears the distinctive sound of stone grating against stone [listen: 24]. Dear God, it only gets worse!, he thinks to himself.
Turning to Lorth and Bralin, Merryn shouts, "Look lively, there is danger behind you."
"Arminas, your bow can be of better use than your arms right now. Please, let me hold the door and send that vile creature back to the hell from which it came." (Str. Check: 22, nat. 20)
Bralin (AC 19, 31/45hp, bulls strength, bless,-2 Con) d20+3=13 Friday February 25th, 2005 10:54:01 AM
The door is locked. Not what Bralin intended. But the warrior immediately discards that plan of action and shifts to another. Battle is fluid. A warrior adapts.
He feels another surge of healing pass through him, while simultaneously hearing Merryn's warning.
The dwarf turns, his eyes gauging the distance to the undead (too far), and also attempting to identify the type [Knowledge (Religion) check 13].
Bralin moves, sliding past Andrath and planting himself between this new foe and the platform holding the former prisoner. "Free this man," he tells the rogue as he goes by.

Relieved that the door is now shut tight, Arminas relaxes from his efforts. He leans against the door to rest, when a strange sound is heard. Someone is opening a door across the room, far away from his companions.
Arminas spins and sees what appears to be corpse coming through the door. He lets fly two arrows. He has only one coated arrow left.

Lorth (AC 17, HP 45) Friday February 25th, 2005 4:38:01 PM
Lorth moves near Bralin and attempts to remove the device on Langdon's head. Once it is removed he forms up near Bralin.
Andrath (AC24, 30/30 hp, Shield 10 rounds remaining) Sunday February 27th, 2005 9:33:36 PM
Andrath moves over to the side of the stretched out figure, casting shield on himself when he reaches the wounded man. Not being a healer, he tries to see if the man will survive few minutes longer, since it seems that combat is not yet over. As the other door opens, Andrath looks back up and says, "What's this? Bralin, what is that thing?"
