DM Kathy Sunday February 20th, 2005 5:15:24 PM
Several weeks pass uneventfully in Plateau City. You visit the Catacombs, and make various purchases.
You take a trek over to the Gold Quarter, only to discover that you don't yet possess gold in sufficient qualities to be of interest to any of the bankers or money managers there.
Everyone who ordered a masterwork item from Baldis has now received it, and he gently presses anyone who hasn't yet asked him for anything. "It's the least I can do after all your help with Kethlorn," he insists. "Please, you must allow me to make you something." (This doesn't apply to Wilfire and Shadow, of course; they joined the group later).
Anya, the lovely redheaded bard, returns to Sampson's one evening, and she and Arm strike up a torrid flirtation.
You learn that an itinerant soothsayer has come to Sampson's. He's staying in a small room at the back, and tends to spend his days in a particular corner of the taproom, reading signs and telling fortunes to anyone interested. Many of those who have paid for a reading remark on how accurate it is. A few only shake their heads and walk away, looking deeply troubled.
[Go ahead and state what your character is up to for a 2-3 week period. If you decide to get your fortune told, let me know.]
Evan Monday February 21st, 2005 6:20:47 AM
Evan spends the next couple of weeks sharing his time with Mira and Ariel. At one point, however, he disappears for a week to train as a Twilight Ranger, feeling this will be a better move for him since it appears that he will be spending a good deal of time in the city.
When he returns, he discovers a soothsayer has taken up residence within the tavern and decides to make use of him, wondering if the soothsayer can deny or confirm any future relationship he and Mira might have.
Arm Monday February 21st, 2005 7:12:26 AM
Arm spends the time relaxing, practicing his playing, and of course spending time with Anya. Upon hearing of the soothsayer, and always being up for a peek into the future, Arm approaches the table to ask for a reading. Seeing Evan already there, he patiently waits his turn.
Shadow Monday February 21st, 2005 10:20:46 AM
Shadow spends the first part of the free time with his new comrades (in his new surroundings). He will however spend quite a bit of time in the guild training.
He does not believe in the charletons that call themselves soothsayers, but will follow Evan and Arm as they go to see this 'soothsayer'.
Conner Monday February 21st, 2005 4:18:17 PM
Conner spends the next several weeks engaged in the more routine activities of life; repairing his equipment, shopping for a new shield, weapons practice, and spending time at Sampson's with rest of the party. When Amy has free time he spends it with her.
Conner has had his fortune told before. They were always very pretty and batted their eyes when they read his palm. Conner did not believe their portents, but at least a couple of times they accurately foretold of the evenings romance. The fighter had no interest in holding hands with an old man.
Wilfire Ironhouse Monday February 21st, 2005 5:50:51 PM
Wilfire wakes at first light every day, and then works through an almost excessively strenuous exercise routine. Once done he spends the next few hours in prayer, and then comes his weapon training.
"Who wans da join me in a little trainin?" he asks the group everyday. "Got me self some trips and disarms I need to be workin on."
Relaxation doesn't come easy for the recovering alcoholic dwarf. However, by the end of the day he's so fatigued that he can do little but relax with his newest companions.
To tired to drink.
OOC- Wilfire will have his fortune told reluctantly.
Mira d20+8=19 d20+8=20 d20+8=20 d20+2=3 Monday February 21st, 2005 9:06:15 PM
Mira tries to get Evan to take her outside the city when the ranger goes to visit Ariel. She brings her light crossbow and bolts, and when not enjoying the countryside in the quiet company of her companion and his small but sturdy horse, she gets in some practice with the weapon. During the week that Evan is gone, she will spend some time teaching Arm, and anyone else who is interested, what she knows of the ranger's sign language.
Most afternoons she is gone until the dinner hour, returning with stained fingers and scorch marks on her clothing and any exposed skin. When the ranger disappears for a while, she uses the opportunity to whitewash the walls of their room and re-arrange the furniture. She will explain to anyone who is interested that she has been reading about a system of good and evil influences in the siting of items in a room called feng shui. Evan will notice the curtain down the middle of the room is gone and the two cots are situated much closer together then before. There are also 2 new flasks* with labels written in Mira's hand sitting on the shelf he crafted for her.
Most evenings Mira will beg off going out, and have a simple meal of bread and cheese, and a glass of wine. She will stay up sitting by the fire with her nose in a book of romantic fiction by one of the local Plateau City authors. On the one occasion that she accompanies her friends to Sampson's she makes light of the fortune-teller, but later in the night she finds her way to his corner and crosses his palm with a gold piece. She listens to the soothsayer, with wide eyes, sure that he must be telling the truth. (Sense Motive=3)
*(OOC: DM Kathy, at your discretion, Mira has made 2 flasks of Alchemist Fire using 20 GP and 3 tries-1 fail, 2 successes vs DC 20)
Kadaz Monday February 21st, 2005 10:29:44 PM
Kadaz will willingly visit the fortune teller for a look into the future. This could be fun!
The dwarf will daily train with Wilfire and anyone else who wants to exercise. In the afternoons he will walk the city, greeting those members of the guard who he knows. Evenings are spent at Sampsons with the others, relaxing and enjoying the company.
And of course, he spends a good deal of time every day playing with Birdie.
DM Kathy Monday February 21st, 2005 10:37:18 PM
Evan takes a week or so to adjust his training toward being a "ranger" in a more urban environment. When he returns, he sits down across from the soothsayer for his reading.
The man--a human of about 60 or so--smiles encouragingly at Evan. "Welcome, my silent friend," he begins. "Silent, but with much to say, eh? Concerning...." he concentrates for a moment, then smiles. "Concerning a young lady, of course. She likes you, you know, almost as much as you like her. Still, I don't suppose that's a secret, hmm? Ah...but will it last, you wonder? Alas, I have no answer for you on that score. It is in your hands...yours and the lady's." He is silent a moment, apparantly lost in thought, then begins again. "I see a journey in your future--long, perhaps, but not as long as some. I see obstacles to be overcome, battles to be fought and won...and...what?" He cocks his head, as though listening to a voice he can barely hear. "Some kind of crisis...something..." he trails off, then shakes his head in frustration. "You shall have a chance to save the Wold, I believe," he concludes with a little smile.
Arm spends some time honing his skills on his harp, and spending time (and money) on Anya. She is a pleasing companion, and being with her certainly seems to make Arm the envy of half the men in Plateau City.
When his turn comes, Arm sits down across from the soothsayer. "Ah, purveyor of songs and stories, sit! Sit!" the man begins. "There's no doubt about it, my lad, you are a hero. One of several, I see." He grows thoughtful. "Looking for love...but finding it?" He shakes his head. "Not this time, I think--ah, but the pursuit is so delightful, does it really matter?" He shifts into what sounds like a standard litany: "You shall go on a journey; you shall overcome many obstacles; you--" He stops abruptly, then reaches across the table to seize Arm's wrists. "You mustn't let them blame you," he says, looking earnestly into Arm's eyes. "Whatever you decide, the outcome is already written. It won't be your fault, boy. Remember that--it won't be your fault." He lets go and slumps back in his chair as if exhausted.
Shadow moves into the lodgings and spends some time getting acquainted with his new companions. Conner repairs equipment, does a little training, and flirts with Amy. Neither he nor Shadow is interested in talking with the soothsayer.
Like Conner, Wilfire spends his days training. He's reluctant to enter a tavern, but wants to hear the soothsayer's predictions. Steeling himself for the ordeal, he goes into the tavern one evening and sits down across from the old human man.
"A man fighting demons," the soothsayer begins, speaking almost to himself. "And I have picked a most inconvenient location. My apologies for that; I'm afraid I can't always accomodate everyone. Now, then." He closes his eyes. "A stalwart companion with a true heart, but you're a dwarf, so that's hardly noteworthy. Let me see." He looks Wilfire in the eye. "Your 'condition' isn't nearly as bad as you think it is, you know. You're far too hard on yourself. But I suspect you know that. I see conflict in your future, and great deeds." He closes his eyes again. "The Sleeper?" He shakes his head in frustration. "Something about a Sleeper, and wind and water, and butterflies? No, that can't be right." He opens his eyes and grins sheepishly at Wilfire. "That's it, I'm afraid."
Mira spends some time with Evan, and also spends a little time teaching the others Evan's sign language. She concentrates on practical and tactical communication rather than personal thoughts, so the group can (for example) understand the signs for "there are two enemies beyond that hill over there," but not "I feel conflicted." Mira also finds the time to do a little alchemy, and the occasional scorched eyebrow never hurt anybody. She also visits the soothsayer.
"Welcome, my dear," the man says in greeting. He studies her thoughtfully for a moment or two. "I've met your young man, I believe. A handsome fellow--and you are good enough for him, whatever your doubts may tell you. Great deeds lie ahead of you--and behind you as well, if I'm not mistaken. Goblins, wasn't it? You showed tremendous courage, but more will be needed, I'm afraid." Another moment of silence, then he continues slowly, almost hesitantly, as if unsure of what he is saying. "When the Sleeper....awakens?....all will...change. Those who oppose the...the Laughing Ones?...will be...will be..." He stops, shaking his head. "It's gone. I'm sorry. There's something about a Sleeper...I wish I could see more."
Uriel Monday February 21st, 2005 11:58:06 PM
Uriel will spend time training and doing work with the priests of Domi. He will also go down to the orphanage to do some volunteering there. He trains hard for several hours if possible everyday. Hearing Kadaz's interest in training, Uriel will work with him.
Uriel suggests that as well as working against each other in training they should probably work on tactics in conjunction with each other, using individual strengths and styles.
{If it isn't too late, Uriel will go to the soothsayer, thinking to ask questions about his father.}
Wilfire Ironhouse Tuesday February 22nd, 2005 12:59:18 AM
"Bah!" Wilfire mutters as he leaves the tavern. "Sleeper! Staltwart companion! An orc could'a figured as much."
But in truth Wilfire was more bothered by the smell of drink than the words of the old human. In fact, somewhere deep inside Wilfire he actually believed what the man said.
Later when he saw Shadow and Conner he told them about the incident. "Don know if I believe a word of it, but maybe you should go see the ol'man. Maybe it's nothin, but somethin tells me ya should."
And with that Wilfire goes back to his training, eager to get the thought of booze from his mind.
Arm d20+7=10 Tuesday February 22nd, 2005 6:13:45 AM
Arm places a gold piece on the table and thanks the soothsayer, then leaves the tavern for the relative comfort of the apartment, where he contemplates what the sage said. "Not my fault, not my fault...don't blame myself...this clearly has no good portent in it...and what of Anya? What indeed?".
He eventually falls into a fitful slumber, with dreams full of people blaming him for unknown deeds, with Anya among them. When he awakes, he is even more troubled than before, and resolves to discuss his reading with the rest of the group when they next assemble, as he can find no solace within him. Not knowing what else to do at the moment, he proceeds on a short walk to ply his trade, but his heart and mind clearly are not in it (perform=10).
Kadaz Tuesday February 22nd, 2005 6:54:08 AM
Kadaz waits his turn for the soothsayer's table. When it comes he lays down a coin and waits eagerly for any insight into what is to come.
Shadow Tuesday February 22nd, 2005 10:43:36 AM
Shadow finalizes his transactions at the Catacombs, finishes moving in, and completes his training.
Once Wilfire returns and suggests that those that did not go to the soothsayer should go he realizes maybe he really should go. He notices the worried look on his new companions face and wonders if he will get information to help his friend.
Shadow does relent and goes to where the soothsayer is and will wait his turn to see what the man has to say.
Mira Tuesday February 22nd, 2005 6:23:25 PM
After the reading, Mira is suddenly shy around Evan, looking at him from the corner of her eyes, under lowered lashes. When more of the party are about she tells them about what the soothsayer predicted in relation to "The Sleeper" and "The Laughing Ones." She doesn't say anything to anyone about the more personal message the fortune-teller had for her.
"All will change, I wonder what that means?" she says out loud.
DM Kathy Tuesday February 22nd, 2005 11:17:03 PM
Those who visited the soothsayer puzzle over their readings. What could it all mean?
Those who visited the Catacombs find their purchases delivered promptly.
Hearing the predictions the others received, Uriel, Kadaz, and Shadow decide to have their fortunes read as well--with varying degrees of reluctance.
"He comes seeking answers," the old man begins as Uriel sits down across from him, "Answers I fear are not mine to give. Does it matter so much, my lad, who sired you?" A wistful smile. "I am sure it matters very much, to you. On the other hand, which is more important--the man he was then, or the man you are now?" He takes a deep breath and closes his eyes. "Sometimes we're better off not knowing....sometimes it's better to let the Sleeper lie." He opens his eyes and looks at Uriel. "Still, not all change is for the worse, you know. Indeed, I believe some people will be quite overjoyed at the changes that are coming." Almost to himself, he adds, "I only wish I knew what they were."
Some time later, Kadaz comes and sits down. "Ah, the son of the guard!" the soothsayer begins. "Quite an accomplishment, to claim a dozen fathers. I know you make them all proud, though." He grows thoughtful. "The Wold may soon have need of your courage. Some challenges I see clearly, in the immediate future. You would be wise, I think, to consider how to fight a swarm of creatures." He closes his eyes. "And the stars....omens of peril, and of good as well. Strange, that. Which way will the balance tip, I wonder?" He opens his eyes and looks at Kadaz. "Either way, you must be ready."
Shadow approaches the table warily. "Greetings, silent walker," the man begins. "A friend of widows and orphans, eh? No matter, no matter; there's a place in the Wold for your kind of hero, too. A time for alertness and stealth is coming soon, I think, although exactly what..." He pauses for a few moments. "It is the Sleeper," he says at last. "All the signs, all the...the omens are centered on him. But there are so many...so many that I can't tell what they mean. Tremendous good, and immesurable evil, and waking and sleeping, and dreams and nightmares." He slumps back, exhauseted. "I can say no more."
Meanwhile, there is a buzz among the citizens of Plateau City. Laborers and merchants, whose normal talk runs to the price of goods and the quality of drink, are now discussing signs and prophecies. Temples are suddenly crowded as people come seeking answers--or at least, reassurance. And everywhere there are signs pointing to "the Sleeper." But who or what is he?
Conner Wednesday February 23rd, 2005 12:18:47 AM
"Bah. Change is always on the horizon, good or bad. What's this nonsense about a sleeper. All my life I've heard stories of sleeping dragons, sleeping demons, sleeping princesses. Which one is this?"
The fighter takes a long pull from his mug of ale and challenges his companions for a reply, although there is little they can say that would change his opinion on the matter.
Wilfire Ironhouse Wednesday February 23rd, 2005 2:46:24 AM
Wilfire shakes slightly at the sight of Conner drinking, but then bites back his desire and concentrates on the business at hand.
"And don'ya be forgetin bout the wind, water and Butterflies!" Wilfire said with a sarcastic chuckle.
Looking down at his feet Wilfire begins muttering some of the words to himself- "Wind. Water. Butterflies. Swarm of creatures. The sleeper. The laughing ones. Wakin and sleepin."
He goes over it again and again, but it still sounds like jibberish.
Evan Wednesday February 23rd, 2005 5:57:12 AM
Evan leaves the soothsayer, feeling quite content. With the soothsayer and the dreams, and the wonderful things done in their room, there is no doubt in Evan's mind that Mira feels the same about him, maybe not to the same degree yet, but soon she will. And it sounds like there are to be wonderful events occuring soon. Perhaps the dragons will return. He'd like another shot at a dragon.
That evening, when everyone begins to gather for the evening meal, Evan cannot help but notice Mira's demure actions. He smiles happily as the hunt suddenly got much more interesting. At an opportune moment, Evan will pull Mira to the side as if to tell her something to give her a very soft kiss. Before she can respond, he will smile and walk away to join the others, hoping his kiss will say what his mouth cannot.
Arm Wednesday February 23rd, 2005 7:26:16 AM
Arm joins his companions at Samson's for the evening repast, just in time to hear the parts of their readings. He then relates his OWN reading to them, and says, "It seems that something very dark is looming on the horizon, and apparently we are all to be involved in it. One of my greatest fears is the part about people blaming me for things that aren't my fault. I tell you this so that, when the time comes, hopefully you all will understand and show compassion toward me.". Turning to Uriel, he continues, "Is it possible that someone at your temple may have a clue as to the whereabouts and/or identity of this "Sleeper" or the "laughing ones"?".
Kadaz Wednesday February 23rd, 2005 7:52:06 AM
"Ummm" Kadaz replies uncertainly as he hears his fortune. "Thanks." He makes his way back to his friends and relays what he was told. "The Sleeper?" he wonders as he listens in on nearby conversations. This could get interesting. He pets Birdie's head and slips the dog a treat.
Shadow Wednesday February 23rd, 2005 3:54:54 PM
Shadow relates his strange message from the soothsayer to his comrades and is wondering the validity of the fortune teller based upon that all of them have gotten similar information. Then he hears about what is being said in the streets and wonders if the fortune teller got his material from these sources or if he really can glimpse into the future.
"Does anyone know where we can exchange some of this gold for easier to handle currency, either platinum or gems? I have been able to in the past turn a little bit into other currency, but not this great of a quantity." he states to his companions.
OOC: Also, Kathy could you provide a little detail about the 'apartment' is like (floors and walls particularly) in case Shadow wants to 'hide' their money.
Mira Wednesday February 23rd, 2005 6:13:09 PM
Evan's sudden kiss causes Mira a moment of consternation, but she does not pull away. There is something comfortingly familiar in the closeness of the man, as if this is not their first kiss. Mira shakes her head, and returns to the party. She listens to what the others have to say, but keeps her own counsel.
Strange portents, the way folks are acting, Sleeper's and Laughing Ones, Evan's new confidence...what does it all mean?
DM Kathy Thursday February 24th, 2005 1:05:30 AM
The group spends some time puzzling over what they have heard, but can make no sense of it--yet.
Mira and Evan seem to be drawing somewhat closer together.
[OOC: I wasn't the DM at the time the group moved into the apartment. Absent any previous description, I'm going to say the walls and floor are good wooden planks, and that the entire thing is pretty well-constructed. There don't seem to be any loose floorboards or similar hiding places.]
A few days later, there is a knock at the door of the apartment. You open it to find an attractive young human woman standing there. Some of you recognize her as Maline, of the Society for Draconic Research.
"I'm sorry to trouble you," she begins, "but we need your help."
Wilfire Ironhouse Thursday February 24th, 2005 4:46:09 AM
"Please bring yerself inside" Wilfire suggests, as he is eager for some action after all these days of training.
"Or, if ya don't like the splender of our abode mayhaps we should should go somewheres else."
Evan Thursday February 24th, 2005 5:59:06 AM
(Evan is a carpenter, the group knows this as he has done work around the apartment. If Shadow needs something done, Evan is the soul of discretion *g*)
He knew it! Dragons again. Evan joins Maline and Wilfire, an expression of eagerness on his face.
Arm Thursday February 24th, 2005 6:06:04 AM
OOC: This is a reply to Mira's post in the Catacombs...I didn't think it appropriate to reply there, as my transaction was already completed.. :)
Arm smiles and Mira and says, "Thank you for your kind words, my dear, but I hardly think a feather will provide me with defense against swords and arrows.".
OOC: Back to the matter at hand
Arm welcomes Maline as well, and is eager to hear what she has to say...perhaps SHE can shed some light on the recent predictions.
Kadaz Thursday February 24th, 2005 7:21:41 AM
Kadaz admires the fine leather weapons harness that has been delivered. It's a pleasure to put it on and hang his weapons on it. And clearly it can conveniently hold several more.
As Kadaz hears Maline's request he is both eager and worried. The only other time in his life he saw a dragon he ended up cowering in the corner. But this time he will be prepared. He joins the others in agreeing to help Maline.
Shadow Thursday February 24th, 2005 8:15:21 AM
Shadow spends some of their time off doing some rather strange things around the apartment. He first starts checking the walls and floors of his room, and then the 'main room' (if there is one) seeming to be looking for something. He then starts to make some very small symbols on the outside of any windows (on the sill) and on the outside door frame. If asked, "Oh it is to let others of my profession know that this place is off limits because I, and any companions, am protected because of my status with the guild" (OOC: putting the mark of a guild member on those exposed areas).
He will also spend some of the time replenishing his store of arrows (put this here because I am not sure where to actually get these), and possibly seek out a gem seller to exchange some of his gold for gems. He wants to also get a small chest with a lock (and that he can rig a trap on to protect any of the new wealth that the group would like to protect).
When the member of the esteemed Society of Draconic Research arrives, Shadow is somewhat awed by her presence and will remain silent as the group invites her into the apartment.
Uriel Thursday February 24th, 2005 3:39:35 PM
Uriel comes out of the bedroom, the look of a horrid hangover apparent on his unshaven face. He blinks at the light and moves over to sit at the table.
Then he notices the guest and he sighs and puts the palms of his hands over his eyes.
Conner Thursday February 24th, 2005 5:11:45 PM
When Maline enters, Conner offers her a seat at the table. "Please, tell us what troubles you."
Mira Thursday February 24th, 2005 5:45:48 PM
Mira nods a welcome to the woman who seems familiar to the others. She recalls the odd corner shop where the Society had recently relocated and that it was near Baldis' place in the Guild Quarter.
"How can we help you?" she adds to the questions of the others.
(OOC: Shadow-info about the apt. can be found in the Jan. 15, 2004 post and a few after.)
DM Kathy Friday February 25th, 2005 2:39:51 AM
"Thank you," Maline says to Wilfire. "This should be fine."
Once seated, she takes a moment to look around the room at you all, then begins. "As you may have heard, several interesting prophecies have come to light recently. These foretellings are vague, and often contradict one another, but it seems clear that we are on the verge of something very significant indeed.
"What you may not have heard," she continues, "is that there have also been astrological omens and other phenomena, all of which point to a sudden shifting of power in the Wold. Astrologers point to a particular alignment of stars and planets, which will happen in a few short months. It will be a time of great possibilities, and tremendous power, and it would appear that something is due to happen then."
She leans forward in her seat, looking eager. "We at the Society have done our own research on this, and Volgick Stubblefallow, our foremost scholar, believes it has something to do with the dragon Penroth.
"Penroth is an evil dragon, of course, but he is a dragon and is therefore of interest to us. Anything that concerns him therefore concerns us, and we are eager to learn more. Master Stubblefallow belives there are some works in his native Angel Springs that might shed some light on what is happening. He would very much like to make the journey there, but he is elderly and somewhat frail, and we are concerned for his safety during the trip.
"We were hoping that you would agree to accompany Master Stubblefallow to Angel Springs and back here to Plateau City, and to assist him with any reasonable requests along the way. We are willing to compensate you for your trouble, of course. What say you?"
[OOC to Jeff: everybody got 1500 XP for the last adventure, and I haven't given out bonuses or Hero Points for it yet.]
Evan Friday February 25th, 2005 5:46:06 AM
Evan is elated. To be able to spend time with someone very knowledgable about dragons would be a most welcome experience. The next time a dragon comes to Plateau City, Evan plans to be waiting for it with something special. Of course, he will go.
Evan signs to Mira, Ask what the pay will be
Arm Friday February 25th, 2005 6:25:36 AM
Arm smiles broadly at the chance to go adventuring again, especially since he has more protection now. However, he waits to voice his opinion until the others have had a chance to turn Maline down before he agrees to go.
Shadow Friday February 25th, 2005 8:14:38 AM
Although reluctant to go, will follow along with his new comrades. He did just move in and kind of join the group. Dragons are definitly not in his area of knowledge for he has only seen them from very far off, and he is not looking forward to meeting any of them soon.
He will remain silent, just observing the group and their guest.
Wilfire Ironhouse Friday February 25th, 2005 9:51:58 AM
"I'd be glad to go. Heck I'll carry him ta Angel Springs if ya compensate me enough!" Wilfire added with a chuckle before his smile faded away when he realized the nobody seemed to share his dwarven sense of humor.
Red faced Wilfire tried again- "Ah, if my companions'll do it, ya can count this dwarf in."
Kadaz Friday February 25th, 2005 12:19:26 PM
Kadaz adds his view. "I'm game. But exactly where is Angel Springs? Anyone have a map?"
Mira Friday February 25th, 2005 12:26:43 PM "Hmmmm...dragons have hoards. But we're not actually being asked to go after the dragon, just help some old guy fetch some stuff. Probably books, artifacts and stuff." thinks the sorcerer.
Catching Evan's hand signals she adds, "may I be so bold as to enquire what the Society proposes by way of remuneration?"
Uriel Sunday February 27th, 2005 5:48:32 PM
Uriel remains silent, rubbing his head and squinting at the rep of the Society.
Conner Sunday February 27th, 2005 9:38:26 PM
"I've heard of it." Conner pipes in. "It lies north along Dragon Bay. North of the Red Hills and the mouth of the Crescent River. I haven't been that far north myself, just as far as the Red Hills, never as far as the river."
DM Kathy Sunday February 27th, 2005 11:42:02 PM
"Oh," says Maline when the talk turns to maps, "we have all kinds of maps at the Society, but I didn't think to bring one with me. I do apologize.
"But yes," she continues, "Angel Springs is in the Crescent Valley. To get there, you must cross the First and Second Plateaus, then find your way through the Red Hills. That's the part we're concerned about," she concludes.
When asked about money, she says, "We were thinking a fee of 2000 gold for the trip. Does that sound fair?"
She adds, "If anyone would care to look at a map, they are welcome to accompany me back to the Society office. And we'll expect to see you all at the office at first light tomorrow. That is, if you accept." She looks at you anxiously. "Do you accept?"
Evan Monday February 28th, 2005 5:49:27 AM
Evan nods his acceptance. It will be nice to return home to the Red Hills, even if it is just passing through. And this time, they'll be able to take Ariel with them.
Arm Monday February 28th, 2005 6:02:51 AM
Arm smiles at Maline and says, "It seems you have yourself a deal. We'll take you up on the offer of a map so that we may plan the most expedient AND safest route, and we'll see you at the Society on the morrow.". When she leaves, Arm will follow her to obtain the map and bring it back to the apartment.
Shadow Monday February 28th, 2005 9:57:34 AM
Knowing that he is not very good with maps of the outdoors (he is very good with maps of the city or building) he will stay behind with the rest of the group.
"Should we purchase horses for the trip?" Shadow asks, a little worried about this since he has never ridden a horse before.
Wilfire Ironhouse Monday February 28th, 2005 10:21:27 AM
Wilfire can't help but smile when he hears the offer. Even the thought of riding a horse doesn't break his good spirits.
"I'm not much for ridin. But if that's what ya wants, I'll be ridin."
Once a decision is reached Wilfire will go to his room, grab his new armor, polish it, and then put it on.... heavy, but feels oh so good.
Mira Monday February 28th, 2005 12:13:08 PM
"Last time we went outside the city, we took a light cart to carry our gear, but walked the route," Mira explains to the newer members. "After my shopping trip, I don't think I have the coin for an animal," she adds.
Secretly the sorcerer hopes the party will decide to walk the route. Her attempts at riding a horse, even with Evan's gentle instruction, haven't been very successful.
Kadaz Monday February 28th, 2005 3:06:24 PM
Kadaz walks up to Wilfire to ask a question. "I think you have a wand to cure wounds. I wonder if we could buy another. I have several hundred gold coins left that I can put towards one. Having that wand greatly helped me during our recent battles and I'd like to make sure that we don't run out."
And then to Mira he says "Mira, I think I can spare the coin for a horse or mule if you'd like one. But you're right about that cart. I drove it and was getting the hang of it by the end of the trip. I'd like to take that cart again, or maybe get a larger one we all could ride in. What do you think?"
Conner Monday February 28th, 2005 6:57:57 PM
"I'm not one for horses myself" he states, "but a good mule and a cart would make things a bit easier. Its a long trip and the old trader's road can be rough in places."
Uriel Monday February 28th, 2005 10:18:24 PM
Uriel grumbles, "Actually Kadaz, I have that wand. I tapped it on you a few times during the goblin crawl."
"I am going to get a horse. I have training with them but haven't had the opportunity to ride in quite some time," he continues.
DM Kathy Tuesday March 1st, 2005 1:32:37 AM
You make your preparations for the trip. The cart is still available, and Evan of course has Ariel. Anybody not riding in the cart can walk, or there is a little time to puchase a mount if anyone is so inclined.
Arm goes back to the Society headquarters to look at their maps, and Maline makes a copy of one for the party.
[OOC: anyone who wants to see maps of the area can visit Duncan's off the main Wold page.]
The next morning, you show up bright and early at the Society offices. Maline, looking sleepy and irritated is helping a young elf man load gear into a small pony cart.
"--should have been done hours ago," you hear her grumble as you approach. "We'll be here half the morning at this rate."
"He's not ready yet anyway, Maline," the man replies calmly, "and while I appreciate your help, I know you have other things to do. I'm sure I can get everything loaded before he's ready to leave."
"I'm sure you can't," Maline retorts, and stomps back into the building, presumably to retrieve more gear.
Kadaz recognizes the elf as the man he talked to on the day after the dragon attack. He sees you all approaching and raises a hand in greeting. "Good morning! You must be....um...I'm sorry, Maline never did tell me the name of your adventuring company. At any rate, you are here to provide us with an escort, yes? My name is Talereithin, and I'll be acting as Master Stubblefallow's assistant. He's not quite ready yet."
Evan Tuesday March 1st, 2005 5:57:32 AM
Evan can see that this will be an interesting trip already. Hopefully this fellow will be ready to leave before sundown today.
Kadaz Tuesday March 1st, 2005 6:43:38 AM
Kadaz walks up to the elf and looks at him. "Talereithin, I am Kadaz Guardson and I will be helping escort Master Stubblefallow. Do you or he have any special needs we should know about?"
Arm Tuesday March 1st, 2005 10:36:50 AM
Arm greets the newcomer as well, saying, "My name is Armathen Ebano, but my friends call me Arm, and you may as well. It's a pleasure meeting you.".
Mira Tuesday March 1st, 2005 12:35:31 PM
Witnessing the activities at the Societey headquaters, Mira has trouble concealing a smirk.
Every operation needs a woman to keep folks on track, she thinks. The sorcerer wishes it was Maline, and not the young elf, accompanying them.
Regardless, she watches curiously, waiting for the master to arrive.
Shadow Tuesday March 1st, 2005 3:11:34 PM
Shadow will once again fall into the routine of being unobtrusive and hanging out against the wall of the building observing what is going on. When the group starts out he will acompany Evan (assuming that he takes the lead) and stay with the silent ranger as the group heads out on the journey.
Conner Tuesday March 1st, 2005 7:20:48 PM
Conner packs up his gear, makes sure there are some fresh trail rations in his pack, and straps his new shield to his back. "Wait a minute!" he calls out and heads into Samson's. The burly human returns with a cask tucked under his arm and proceeds to stow it away on the cart. "It might be a long trip."
Uriel Tuesday March 1st, 2005 9:52:20 PM
Uriel still seems a bit out of sorts, both from his demeanor and silence. He mumbles something about a bath and some equipment.
"I'll meet up with you at Sampsons," he says.
DM Kathy Wednesday March 2nd, 2005 2:10:38 AM
"It's good to meet you, Kadaz, Arm," Talereithin replies. "I have no special needs. Master Stubblefallow is quite elderly and rather frail, but it will be my function to attend to any needs he may have." He smiles. "He may ask you for help with something or other, but I ask that you let me handle any requests if at all possible. It's going to be better to have you all ready for trouble, should trouble find us. I fear I am no fighter."
Maline comes back out of the building, carrying a bag that seems fairly heavy. "Good, you're here," she says upon seeing you. "And ready to go, I hope. We'll be departing soon." Glaring at Talereithin, she adds pointedly, "Don't strain yourself or anything."
With a chuckle, the elf man follows her back into the building and returns with more items to be stowed. After a few more trips, they seem to have the little pony cart all loaded--or at least, you hope so, because there seems little room for anything else.
Maline goes back inside, and Talereithin is tying down a few of the items in the cart, when he suddenly stops and hurries to the entrance of the building. A moment later, you see what he was rushing toward, as a tiny, wizened figure begins making its painstaking way out into the street, walking with the aid of a gnarled cane. "A fine day for a journey, is it not?" the diminutive man says, in a voice cracking with age. "And these are the adventurers? Splendid, splendid! What? Oh, thank you," he says as Talereithin takes his arm.
Volgick Stubblefallow is a halfling, and probably the oldest one you've ever seen. He moves slowly, with some difficulty, but he insists on walking to the cart under his own power. His eyes are bright with intelligence, and there is excitment in his voice. "Come closer, come closer," he says to you all. "I must meet you, and my eyes, you know, aren't what they used to be."
He insists on being introduced to each of you, and shaking your hands, before agreeing to be helped into the cart. Talereithin then climbs into the driver's seat and takes up the reins. "I think we're ready at last," he says cheerfully. "How shall we travel? That is, do you want the cart at the rear of the group, or toward the middle? I shall drive where you tell me; I have no head for strategy."
With that, you set off--perhaps later than you had anticipated, but it is still only mid-morning.
Wilfire Ironhouse Wednesday March 2nd, 2005 3:11:43 AM
Wilfire arrives late, but still manages to arrive before the old halfling is brought outside.
"Excuse me tardiness. Di'na tink me new plate wid take me se'long to adorn." Wilfire pulls back is grey cape, which reveals a sturdy looking set of black full plate underneath.
When the old halfling introduces himself, Wilfire takes him with both hands. "Pleasure tae meets ye master Stubblefallow. Surein they calls me Wilfire, tho some jes call me aronhouse."
Wilfire then addresses the rest of the group, "As fer da marchin order... I think the wee cart shouldnae go at frunt or backside of da line."
Evan Wednesday March 2nd, 2005 5:51:20 AM
Evan waits patiently for everyone to get ready. He smiles to Shadow and makes a note to himself to get a horse for Shadow so he can help scout. Evan takes a point ahead of the group and weaves a trail back and forth in font of the group as he scouts out danger.
Arm Wednesday March 2nd, 2005 5:59:52 AM
Casting a curious look at Uriel, Arm hopes that his dolor is nothing more than a hangover. After greeting the old man, he takes a quick stock of the situation. Satisfied, he moves out with the rest. Suddenly realizing that Uriel is at Samson's, he calls, "We need to stop for a moment so that we may retrieve another member of our party. I'll meet you back here very soon.". Saying so, he makes his way to Samson's with all possible haste, hoping that Uriel will be in fighting spirits very soon, as they MAY need him sooner than they think.
Shadow Wednesday March 2nd, 2005 10:22:32 AM
Shadow noticing that the old halfling is waiting to greet each of them individually before he is willing to get started. With that Shadow will move away from the wall and approach the halfling, "I am called Shadow, Master Stubblefallow." With that Shadow will move away from the cart and wait for the group to leave. He is not sure where the cart should go in the group, so he will leave that up to the others.
Once the group gets started he will move to the front of the group.
Kadaz d20+3=16 Wednesday March 2nd, 2005 6:10:40 PM
Kadaz will get the group's cart ready and invite everyone to put their gear onto it. He gets into the driver's seat and tries to remember how to make it go. (handle animal 16)
Mira d20+5=18 Wednesday March 2nd, 2005 10:35:00 PM
Mira will greet the old halfling and shake his hand. She will be careful to grip his hand firmly, but not squeeze too hard for fear of crushing the small fellow's bones. "Mira Silver at your service, Master Stubblefallow," she will say by way of introduction. "Let us hope our paths are green, and there is a fair breeze on our backs," she will add formally. (Diplomacy=18)
The sorcerer will add her pack and light cross-bow to those items in the cart being driven by Kadaz, but her pouches and some other items, along with her short-spear will remain on her person.
Conner Wednesday March 2nd, 2005 11:27:46 PM
"Conner, at yer service." The fighter flashes a toothy grin at the halfling before stowing his pack on the cart. "Keep the cart near the middle of the column if you don't mind squire. Makes it a bit easier to defend that way." Conner turns from the cart to take a position on the flank and then thinks the better of it and retrieves his shield from the pack.
Uriel Thursday March 3rd, 2005 12:56:29 AM
Uriel shows up with a horse and a clean tabard. His horse is a large warhorse and Uriel sits high on the saddle.
"Shall we go?" he whispers, still troubled but looking better in the saddle.
DM Kathy Thursday March 3rd, 2005 1:29:52 AM
You set off from Plateau City. As instructed, Talereithin keeps the pony cart to the middle of the group. Evan and Shadow go ahead, scouting. Mira and Arm are on foot behind them. Conner walks beside the pony cart. Kadaz brings up the rear in the group's cart, with Uriel and Wilfire beside him.
[A lot of that marching order was guesswork; let me know if I guessed wrong.]
You spend several uneventful days on the road, overnighting at inns in deference to the scholar's age and frailty. It's not an unpleasant journey, despite the occasional bouts of rain, and you soon find yourself nearing the edge of the First Plateau, ready to cross the Red Hills.
At the inn that evening, Talereithin broaches the subject of the next part of the journey. "We leave the safety of the protected roads tomorrow," he says, "are there any special precautions you would like me to take? Any changes to our marching order?"
Wilfire Ironhouse Thursday March 3rd, 2005 2:20:03 AM
OOC- Wilfire will remain at the back of the wagon, if that is where he is needed.
"Surein be a feen harse ya got dere" Wilfire says to Uriel with his thick dwarvish accent. "Wish ah' still hud me pony, but stupit me goat blootered and sol'her."
Evan Thursday March 3rd, 2005 6:01:42 AM
Evan leaves his introduction to others who are more capable of speaking with the old halfling. Each night as they sit around the fire, Evan will expand upon his sign language lessons by also including combat signals so that the group can communicate silently in combat. When they start traveling the next day, Evan will resume his scouting.
Kadaz d20+3=6 Thursday March 3rd, 2005 7:35:46 AM
On the trip Kadaz becomes more comfortable with the reins. Birdie sits on the front seat with his head hanging out over the side wishing for more wind.
At night Kadaz concentrates on learning the combat signals Evan is teaching. And on trying to relay them with an axe in one hand and a shield in the other.
Kadaz will also coordinate talk with Volgick Stubblefallow and Talereithin. "If we get into combat Birdie, my dog, will guard Volgick. We'll all do our part to keep you safe." Kadaz works with Birdie to get him to jump to the scholar's aid if commanded. The dog already knows how to guard something, just have to teach him to "Protect that person over there." But with the distractions of traveling Birdie doesn't quite get the additional command. (handle animal 6)
Conner Thursday March 3rd, 2005 8:07:58 AM
"I don't know what kind of trouble we might face, but if it looks like we can't outrun it, I suggest we stop the cart on the road and have Master Stubblefallow take cover behind or beneath it. Kadaz, you drive our smaller cart up along side for added protection. Talereithin, we need you to control the ponies and to make sure they don't bolt. Those with horses can engage at a distance and give us the time to solidify our position...but don't get too far or you'll risk being cut-off from the rest of us."
Conner, looks around to see if his companions agree, hoping he hasn't overstepped his bounds.
Arm Thursday March 3rd, 2005 10:12:25 AM
Arm spends the intervening time learning more of Evan's language as well. Smiling at Conner's plan, he remarks, "That sounds like an excellent idea, my friend, and Mira and I can either fall back to the cart or advance to assist Evan and Shadow, as the conditions warrant.".
Shadow Thursday March 3rd, 2005 11:04:28 AM
During the day Shadow will work hand in hand with Evan to try and make sure the group is aware of anything around. During the evening Shadow will work diligently to learn all he can with the silent language that Evan is teaching, knowing that being up front with Evan it will be very important to understand the ranger.
When the discussion about tactics starts, Shadow listens intently because he knows very little about group tactics. He will listen intently, but knows that the only imput he has is not very significant.
(Kathy, I am not sure if you want us to spot/search/etc. rolls when we are covering days in a single post. Just let me know. Thanks.)
Mira Thursday March 3rd, 2005 6:10:02 PM
Mira enjoys the trip although at first she is a little stiff, having become deconditioned from the layover in the city, and unused to long marches. The pace is pleasant though and she enjoys her conversations with Arm about the various arts. She keeps a lookout for the scouts up ahead, but they are often out of view. From time to time she sees the sun glint off the blonde head of the ranger, and she smiles.
The sorcerer assumes responsibility for cooking most of the meals, and hopes folks don't mind the way she fixes up the victuals, mostly stews made from whatever the hunters catch with dumplings floating on top.
After dinner she will sit by the fire and study the scrolls she purchased in The Catacombs. They are new, and challenging, but over time she learns them by heart.
Mira will volunteer for early or late watches, since she needs a good nights rest to be at her best during the day.
Uriel Thursday March 3rd, 2005 7:06:47 PM
{I think Uriel will be in front of the main group and behind Evan and Shadow. No need to let the cart lead the way.}
Uriel nods at Wilfire's comment, patting the large black stallion on his neck as he does.
Uriel agrees with Conner's suggestion and says, "I don't suppose we need to ride ahead to engage. If we actually have distance on our side, I suggest the cart begin to fall back and the people on horses pepper the attackers with missle fire."
