Ascent [DM Post] Thursday February 24th, 2005 5:02:47 PM
The group sets out, spirits up with the warm sun and blue endless sky above. The mist at the feet diminishes and abates altogether, revealing some bare ground on deep earth and stone. Niether ranger spots any tracks and there is no sign of anything edible in the Mountains long shadow. The ever present crunch of snow begins to fade as well, as the group makes its way deeper into the foothills and now can see the face of Búrfell directly.
Except for the exhertion of steadily moving uphill, the day has been an easy one. The hard initial climb that was thought to lie ahead, turned out to not be necessary. The group stops for lunch a mere couple hours from the ascent of Búrfell.
From this distance, 3-4 miles, the climb looks to be difficult but not impossible. Búrfell, is a mighty lone mountain, here striking like a pillar to the sun amongst the foothills, but the Red Flower of Kelda-Sigr grows not on the upper slopes, but in a lower alpine valley. A valley the young of Ice Peak might be gazing upon by morning.
The weather is clear in all directions, blue endless, eternal sky. But the stories of Búrfell say this can change in moments.
With many hours still before twighlight, the first face is reached, a blast of near vertical 20' of black grey granite. As the group steps into its shadow, it almost feels as if the rock itself challenges you with a chilled blast of artic air.
Bohdi, you are correct on the sleep. fell free to back post/chat as about 5 hours have gone by
Nauthiz'Ull d20=19 Thursday February 24th, 2005 11:04:28 PM
A shiver shoots down the boy's spine as he enters into the mountains great shadow. Instinctively he scans the face of Burfell and chooses a way upon which to start climbing.
"Wunjos this is going to be tough, be just take it slow and steady and everything should be okay. If a couple of us climb up we can send a rope down and help the rest up." =========== Climb-19! (I took a 0 bonus as I have a +3 to climb but a -3 AC check)
Aiden d20=15 Thursday February 24th, 2005 11:50:40 PM
He took a deep breath of air once they had emerged from the spike, quite pleased in having exitted such an enclosed place. Aiden preferred the wyld outdoors, not within a labyrinth underground.
Not feeling the bite of the wintery cold, Aiden helped to lead the trail towards through the mountain and down towards the valley.
"I can help with the climb..." he stated in a matter of fact tone.
Climb: 15 + 2 = 17
Bohdi Nackle Friday February 25th, 2005 12:08:40 AM
"Well," Bohdi looked at the granite wall almost proudly. "You see? I was right to wait on picking spells. Here, then." He promptly flopped down on the bare ground, pulled out his spellbook, and buried his prominent gnomish nose in the vellum leaves. He apparently expected the others to begin contemplating how to get the group, including the mule, up the cliff.
He still seemed open to suggestions, however, during the 40 minutes he took of everyone's time as he studied.

Garrett pulls his 50' of hemp rope out of his pack and starts knotting it at 3' intervals.
"Whoever is the best climber can take this rope with them. I'm going to knot it so that those of us who can't climb very well can make it up without a problem."
"Make sure you secure it to something really solid at the top."
Frigg'Isa Sunday February 27th, 2005 11:43:35 PM
Frigg'Isa walks with the others, lost in her own thoughts. When they make the rock face, she looks up at it and shudders lightly.
"Climbing isn't my strongest area. I'll probably need help up. That knot thing is a good idea Garrett. Maybe I'll be able to make it with that."
The First Step [DM Post] Monday February 28th, 2005 11:50:20 AM
Aiden and Nauth find sufficient Hand holds to make it up the 20' wall. Upon pulling themselves over the top to stand the majesty of the mountain lays out before them. A crevice carves it's way into the mountain at a steady climb and by the great errosion on the east face, it appears the area is subject to some turbulent weather regularly. It also looks steep enough to cause those without climbing skill or above average strength some troubles without assistance.
As the two look over teh spreading granite under a blue sky, a partial coil of rope lands next to them with a plop.
At the bottom and the top, it is clear the getting Yodel up this face will be difficult at best. Another wind stirs from the east and ice crystal like snow is swept from the upper step and shimmers in the sun briefly before vanishing.
[DM Note: Garret, I had you take 10 on Use Rope, Everyone climbing remember to make checks, or just take 10. I will need walking orders from now on and wathch orders at night as well.]
Aiden d20=8 Monday February 28th, 2005 8:03:52 PM
As he was climbing, Aiden's muscluar frame pulled his form along the side of the mountain. Though he was tall, and lean, his form was usually well hidden underneathe his wintery gear.
And now, he was finally able to stretch out, and make use of something in addition to his legs.
At the completion of the climb, he took a deep breath and enjoyed the view with a large smile. "Good view, yes Garret?" as he started to look around for a great spot to help 'anchor' the rope for the others.
Rolled an 8 to find a good spot to help anchor the rope (and make things easier for the others to follow)...
OOC: wasn't sure what skill could have helped there....
Nauthiz'Ull Monday February 28th, 2005 8:13:36 PM
Standing tall, the dark-skinned boy bends backwards until a crack and pop are produced.
"Ahh now that's better! Look at this view sis, look at this view! Well, we should keep Bohdi in the middle so that we don't lose him or anything."
Nauth manages to throw a wink at Bohdi and a slight smirk. Scratching his face he looks around and takes in the sight.
"Aiden, why don't you take the lead? I can take the rear and make sure that nothing comes up our arses. If you would rather, then I will take the front but tis up to you wunjo."
Nauth does a bit more lazy stretching and waits to get moving again.
Bohdi Nackle d20=18 d20=16 Monday February 28th, 2005 9:14:53 PM
Bohdi watched the others scrambling up the rope and contemplated how he wanted to approach the ascent. This struck the others somewhat like a fish trying to decide how to climb a staircase--everyone else present but the creature doing the contemplating fully realizes that it has no idea what it's doing.
Shrugging, Bohdi grabbed the rope and gave it a tentative tug. "Well, here goes nothing," he said, and started up the rope. Squork aided as best he could--flapping alongside the gnome, the bird tried to keep his diminutive master from twisting or dangling unnecessarily. (Aid another, DC 10 = 16.) (Climb check 18, +2 Aid = 20.) "Say!" he smiled after a few feet. I think I have the knack of this!"
Squork rolled his eyes but said nothing but encouraging things.
Once Bohdi reached the top of the cliff, he dusted himself off and called down to the others below. "Piece of cake!" he called. "I can't figure how Yodel is going to make it up here, though. Skalti, do you want to stay down there with Yodel until we come back? I imagine that we'll be coming back this same way."
Bohdi looked at the others already at the top. "I've got some spells up my sleeve to help others with climbing--but maybe we should hold off on those until it's clear that we need them. I've got one, though--Feather Fall--that I'll use if anyone slips. Should save some serious aches and pains."
"I'll be glad to stay in the middle of our marching order. I'll take the first watch again tonight, as needed."
Bohdi looked back down the cliff. "Come on up, Garrett, Frigg!" he called. "It's not that bad!"

Ascension [DM Post] Thursday March 3rd, 2005 12:05:15 AM
Skalti selects to stay with Yodel and begins setting up a shelter, assuring the group he will be fine and after all there really is no way to get the mule up and to leave him would almost assuredly kill him.
The group turns and moves further up the Burfell slopes, the move is slow, footing unsure on the icey patched and loose scrag of the mountain. The day wears and so do flesh and will.
The sun presses ever westward and as the evening twighlight approaches so to Frigga notes, does another storm. A few hundred feet further up the slope Nauth and Aiden spy a small cave.
The wind begins to increase upon the face of Burfell, as if the mountain had awoken and decided not to take to the strangers on his slopes.
Garrett Thursday March 3rd, 2005 7:57:12 AM
"looks like another storm coming. We should probably find some shelter if you guys can find something."
Bohdi Nackle Thursday March 3rd, 2005 9:24:22 AM
The gnome shivered and nodded at the priest's sentiment. "Yes, let's try for some shelter," he agreed. "It's freezing out here."
Actually, it wasn't. But the little gnome hadn't cast his spell to protect himself from the elements today, and even the moderate temperatures of the Ice Vein were clearly not in keeping with Bohdi's tastes.
He looked hopefully at Aiden, who seemed to be leading them toward that small cave in the distance.
Aiden d20=12 d20=10 Thursday March 3rd, 2005 11:05:57 AM
Aiden looked up, shielding his eyes from the glare, towards what appeared to be a cave. Motioning with his hand to Nauthiz (to eliminate excess sounds which could result in very unpleasant things in a mountain setting), he pointed towards the cave.
Should Nauthiz, also, agree that the cave would seem to be a viable choice to spend the evening, Aiden will once again trailblaze towards the opening in the rock.
Before he would start any major climb, he would once again check on the pup to make sure that he was ready for what would be a long evening.

Nauthiz'Ull Friday March 4th, 2005 12:19:44 AM
The dark skinned boy nods to Aiden to confirm that the cave is an extraordinary find at this juncture.
"We should hunker down for the evening or until the storm passes. Heya sis, i'll race you to the cave!"
Nauth notices his beloved sister slipping and quickly grabs her to help her along.
Stirrings of Night [DM Post] Friday March 4th, 2005 10:47:33 AM OoC: I have need to speed up a bit. So alot is going to happen in this post.
Frigga, has a pretty bad day on the slopes, and Nauth is forced to arrest her slide on more than one occassion. But aside from a good dose of fear and adrenaline there is no other adverse effects from any slips.
The cave is entered cautiously, but there are no signs of residents. There are however several scattered bones. Garret identifies several marks as weapon strikes upon some of them and they few that are here are stuffed into side nooks in the wall. Whether the victim was hiding or the body was subsequently hidden is impossible to tell.
The storm Figga noticed building rakes across the mountain soon after the party is inside. The howling wind sends small bits of debris hurtling by the cave opening.
The group settles in back from the entrance for the evening. The cave is relatively shallow, about 40' deep and generally low, average height 8'. There are tiny crags and passages like any natural cave may have that move off in various directions.
As camp is broke and light is being considered, the group as a whole finds quite a cahce of items. Most about the deeper section of the cave and itermixed with still more bones.
15 copper and 20 silver pieces loose about the floor labled Potions x2 (Cure light wounds potion, cure poison) Flint&Steel Leather armor (normal, needs minor repairs) Chainshirt (normal, mainly needs cleaned) Silver necklace (worth 150gp) Fine bone bracelet (worth 100gp) (2) Daggers MW Hand axe 3 chords of 5lb wood stacks battered leather pack Simple Leather amulet Mummified Red Flower of Kelda-Sigr
The pups play and with the cave facing south, the twighlight deepens to true darkness within, except for the warmth of a fire (assuming one is lit). Outside the wind lowers to a whistling moan and the temperature can be felt falling.
The night deepens and the wind dies as the storm subsides. A still calm falls across the area and the clouds even give way to stars and moon. The silence is powerful, even the crackling fire looses it's will to be heard. A chill wind begins to enter the cave, but no, not enter, exit. It comes from the deeper recesess. Like a cold exhalation of the very mountain itself, and not a wind, but a word.
All are awoken by a gentle whisper, "Ssssseeeeee mmmmmeeeeee." a soft blue glow rises from the side of the cave where the flower and leather amulet were found. the glow softens to become a translucent figure of a young woman from the waist up and trailing to vapors. No older than Frigga, she floats eyes closed and head bowed.
The translucent figure floats off the ground abit and finally speaks in a very young sounding voice but also with a hollow, wanting despair. Head still bowed and eyes closed, as if lost in memory.
"You seek the flower.....I sense your all came from the same village as me...I was once came from there...I remember...aaahhh...I remember the cold, bitter, biting...but I did my best...I wanted to show mommy so much and we got the flower." The girl's hand drifts lifeless to point towards the frozen mummified flower on the floor.
Lifting her head, though her eyes stayed closed. "We camped here...me, Úlf-álfr and Da'-fúss ...ssssooooo proud, we were happy, The flower, adults soon....Aaaahhh...me and Úlf-álfr had such great plans for when we returned but during the night...." The girl's face clouds over in a expression of pain , eyes tightening shut, she begins to slowly fade before her translucent body suddenly shimmers back in and a scream of sheer unbridled pain and terror rips from her lips, "NOOOoooo! Úlf-álfr! Noooo! Not my Úlf-álfr." The cave reverberates her very anguish it seems and bits of dust float from the ceiling.
Her voice drops to a whisper "Not my Úlf-álfr. Don't leave me. You promised. I don't want to die" The girl begins weeping where she floats now head down towards her feet. Her tears strike the ground and where they hit, small blades of grass instantly poke through the cracks in the rock floor.
"I don't want to remember....I don't.....they killed us....killed my sweet Úlf-álfr, they laughed and even took...took their heads as trophies.....I miss mommy."
The girl falls silent for some time and the feeling of death slowly drifts from her. A non-violent spirit she may seem, but still a creature of the shadow world. The snow about her feet hardens to ice and blackens. The small blades of grass wither and die. The temperature in her immediate vicinity plummets below zero and it seems even the very air crystalizes about her. Soon she lifts her head and her eyes snap open, a lowered hollow voice of prophesy and accusation roll from her lips, "They are coming...you'll meet too....you'll fight....you must be strong...you must get your flower and make it home. All spirits here of Ice Peak wait for you to get your flower and return....a war will be brewing soon....you all will be the beginning, you'll see. It has began already with the theft, the true war will erupt with cold furry...burning spring, the grass afire, seek you the Wall. Bring the pack, Burfell awaits. You'll see... frozen death, the heart of iron" The girls voice then seems almost to lighten "my mommy...please...my amulet...take it to my mommy.....she would be old now....very old but I do not see her yet...." As the girl utters these last words she fades out of sight and her voice is repaced by a lonesome soft moan of wind across the snow battered land of the Ice Vein.
Bohdi Nackle d20+10=21 d20+8=27 Friday March 4th, 2005 1:07:37 PM ooc: Going out of town for the weekend in about ... 10 minutes. So here goes:
Bohdi listened quietly to the ghost. His eyes seemed to be perpetually round, wide, and wild these days. After the spirit departed, Bohdi sat still for a moment ... and then promptly fell flat sideways.
His eyes fluttered open again after a few minutes. "Can't a gnome get a bloody night's sleep in the wild anymore?" He stood up, angry, and shook his fist in the direction of the cave entrance. "Anyone else bloody well have some message for us? Eh? Eh? You stars out there, moons, you want to pop in for a visit? Come on, come on down now, don't be shy! Plenty of room right over here by the fire, make yourself comfortable!"
He began parading about the cave, sarcastically pantomiming as he welcomed phantom guests. "Oh, Domi, how nice of you to drop by! Gargul, Flower, please, have a seat. Oh, yes, Flower, you look smashing tonight. Anyone else? Oh, yes, Wardd, lovely, lovely, please, sit down. Now, then. Everyone here? Everyone perfectly comfortable? Good."
"NOW LEAVE US THE BLOODY HELL ALONE!" he shouted at the empty air. His breath came in short pants and his nostrils flared.
Squork, always the sensible one, fluttered over and pecked the enraged gnome in the eye.
"Owwww!" he cried, swatting at the bird. Then, the rage broken, the gnome slumped back to the floor. "Wauuuuuugghhhhhh...."
He crawled back into his sleeping roll and blankets and whimpered himself back to sleep.
ooc: a little backposting. As is his custom, Bohdi would have cast Detect Magic on the cave and its contents when first arriving at the location for their night's rest. Let me know what the results would have been. (Don't forget, Bohdi gets an Alchemy check on those potions: rolled a 21 for his check.) While he whimpers in his bedroll, Bohdi will think about what he knows about ghosts and apparitions, to see if he can make sense of the ghost's appearance or its words. Skill check (Knowledge, arcana, trained) 27.
Frigg'Isa d20+3=17 d20+4=11 Friday March 4th, 2005 5:44:32 PM
Frigg'Isa lies sleeping next to her brother when the ghost makes its appearance. She sits up quickly and clasps her Spirit Dagger in her hand. As she listens to the poor girl's ghost tears fill her eyes and drop slowly down her cheeks. She pays them no mind and when the ghost leaves, Friga wipes them off her cheeks and hugs Nauth.
Looking at her brother Friga says, "We have to take the amulet to her mother. She would want to know what happened to her little girl. We'll take their flower, too. Maybe Kayra can do something for them. The village should know what happened."
The dark young woman pauses for a moment before continuing. "I just want to get this over with. Let's get our flower and get home."
Frigg'Isa lays back down and stares at the ceiling of the cave, thinking. After a short while she begins talking.
"What is the pack she spoke of? The ants mentioned a pack, too. When the ants said it, it sounded like a name to me. I guess we'll have to stop and visit the ants on the way home. They want the other flowers that we find. I'm rambling aren't I? I just don't want to go to sleep."
Climbing out of her bed, she dresses in her armor and furs. "You guys go ahead. I'll keep watch. I can't sleep right now anyway."
With that, she moves as close to the entrance of the cave as she can. She watches out into the storm (Spot 17) and listens as well as she can over the raging winds (Listen 11).
DM Addendum Saturday March 5th, 2005 10:54:03 AM
Bohdi detects a Faint aura of Abjuration on one of the daggers and confirms the labels on the two potions (Cure Light Wounds, Delay Poison)
Stories of spirits trapped or wandering ICe Vein of their own volition are too numerous to recount. Everyone knows at least 10 good ghost stories...11 now, though many consider them just stories.
A reference to the Wall sparks a dim memory of an ancient prophecy so sure by the seer he literally etched it in stone, but Bohdi can recall no more than that
Garrett Jax Saturday March 5th, 2005 10:37:12 PM
"well, that was something. It seems that we are being expected or counted on for something much more than just this test. It seems we are destined to be the catalyst for something big.
Perhaps the pack we are suppose to bring refers to the ants. There seems to be many forces at play here. I think that the best course of action is to simply continue on with our goal and let the pieces of the puzzle fall into place.
But we should definitely be extra wary. It appears that there are others in the area that would be more than happy to remove our heads. I think another person on watch tonight would be a prudent course of action. I will stand watch for a bit with Frigg'Isa before I need to rest in order to get my spells."
Aiden d20=11 Sunday March 6th, 2005 7:39:55 PM
Aiden was absolutely shocked by how well everyone was taking the siting of the ghost. It took all of his willpower to keep himself calm, and everyone else in the group, including the gnome, seemed to shrug it off as commonplace. Perhaps he didn't deserve to be an adult....
"Quiet fool!" Aiden hissed at Bodhi, "Do not anger the spirit more!" He was not the wisest of individuals, especially in the ways of the womanfolk, but from what Aiden 'observed', females liked to talk, especially at the 'age' of the girl (which was close to their own). Not only was her beloved killed (as was she), but she was unable to talk to anyone for years...perhaps even decades. And Bodhi basically told her to be silent?!?
And they say that he is a barbarian....that act was more like those of his fellow Twin Tuskian than Ice Peak.
He allowed Frigga to speak to the girl's spirit, but he silently vowed that he was going to carry NOTHING of what was found out of the cavern. The amulet taken so that it can be returned, so that the girl's spirit may be put to rest, and that's all.
Aiden was unable to sleep the rest of the evening...
11 + 3 (con bonus) + (fortitude bonus?) to stay away for the rest of the evening....
Dawn Breaks [DM Post] Monday March 7th, 2005 2:51:55 PM
A few find the spirits visit disturbing others no more so than seeing a snow owl fly by. The remainder of the deep twighlight passes, and though some are unable to immediately return to sleep, the snowman eventually catches up.
Dawn finds the group in the cave, some having attained more sleep than others. The sun climbs higher and the temperatures again begin to rise in the early morning hours.
The promise of a new day.
Frigg'Isa Tuesday March 8th, 2005 2:15:20 AM
Frigg'Isa wakes from her slumber by the ledge. She looks a little sheepish because she had meant to stay awake. She looks around to see if anyone has noticed before moving over to her furs and gear.
Double checking everything in her pack she pulls out a sack and loads the items that they found in the cave into it. She places the mummified flower and amulet into a belt pouch for safe keeping.
While waiting for the others to make ready, she lightly chews on a small piece of rations to calm her stomach.

"Here, love, let's have a look at that dagger, shall we?" Bohdi said as he crept up behind Frigg'Isa. Gnomes were generally pretty good at hiding and moving quietly (Hide 11, MS 17), but Bohdi wasn't doing either particularly well this morning. "If it's magical, it may be useful for me to carry it." With Frigg'Isa's and the others' consent, he tucked it in his belt next to his ordinary dagger; he left the rest of the items for the others.
Bohdi sat on cave floor, pulled out a piece of hardtack, and chewed with a disgruntled look. He hefted his spellbook from his pack and began to study. "Hope we don't end up some blasted spirit haunting a gods-forsaken cave in the wilderness," he muttered. "Would be just my luck now, wouldn't it, stuck in this blasted cold for eternity." He hunched over the pages of mystic writing as if they were a fire to warm his chilly disposition.

The color eventualy returned to the dark-skinned boy's cheeks as the night passed and the visions of the ghost returning vanished formm his mind. As Nauth awoke, he looked into the eyes of his companions just to make sure that he had not dreamed all of what happened the night before, then he checked his pants to ensure that they were not wet and or frozen.
As he pulled some meat from his food for his pup he looked to the others, "I am not sure what to do. We could use a lot of this, especialy the money and the potions."
nauth continued to feed the pup and play with eat, taking small bites for himself while in deep thought. When Frigsa was alone, he would return to his sister and talk in hushed tones to her.
"Sis, I feel deeply compelled to seek revenge for the girl, Úlf-álfr and Da'-fúss. Their souls are not at ease and they deserve to cross over. What should I do Frigsa, what should I do?"
Breakfast Talk [DM Post] Tuesday March 8th, 2005 4:23:13 PM
Teh group chats quickly about whether to leave the possesions until they are returning to Ice Peak, or to take everything they can up the mountain.
Bohdi claims one of the daggers, the pups get a bit of morning exercise and all agree the mummified flower and amulet should not be left behind.
But what of the rest, some may be handy like the hand axe and wood while carrying an extra 30 pounds of Chain mail up the mountain makes less sense.
a snow filled breeze blows down from the higher slopes, as if challenging those below to try and climb them.
Bohdi Nackle Wednesday March 9th, 2005 12:37:52 AM
Even though he seemed to take the most time getting ready--he spent an extra ten minutes to prepare the last spell available to him for the day, which turned out to be an Endure Elements spell that he promptly cast on himself--Bohdi seemed impatient to go.
"Come on, come on," he complained bitterly. "We need to go find this blasted flower, let's get on with it. Any of this gear you all don't think we should carry, let's just leave it. Maybe we'll have the chance to come back and get it, and maybe not."
He looked toward the cave entrance and shivered. "Don't want to be caught out there should a storm kick up. Let's be on with it, then." He eyed Aiden and Nauthiz'Ull expectantly.

Watching the eagerness grow in the eyes of his companions, the young boy gets the feeling that right now, with what is ahead of us, is not the best time to become anxious or moody.
"Wunjos, remember your steps today and make sure all ground is firm. Aiden proved invaluable yesterday as our guide and i for one believe him the best man in the mountains. I will stay back with Frigsa and help whomever needs it along the rest of the climb."
Nauth then gears up and eats a little bit of food. While eating he breaks pieces off and feeds them to his pup. In truth, the pup eats more than Nauth does and while the rest get ready and gear up, the dark-skinned boy will wrestle with the wolf to help promote strength and dexterity.
Frigg'Isa Wednesday March 9th, 2005 12:38:44 PM
Frigg'Isa gives Garrett the items from the sack that he needs. She gives Aiden the healing potion to replace the one that he lost and will give Bohdi the cure poison potion should he want it. If not, she'll tuck it into her belt pouch. The necklace and bracelet the witch also tucks in there. The rest of the stuff, she leaves in the sack to await them upon their return.
When Nauthiz'Ull comes to her about his worries for the ghost, she does her best to comfort him. With her arm around his waist she speaks low to him. "Nauth, try not to trouble yourself so. I am hoping that by returning the amulet to her mother and the flower to the village that perhaps what you are wanting to do will be accomplished."
Turning to the others she raises her voice.
"If everyone is ready, I'd like to get our flower and get back as soon as possible."
The Fields of Valor [DM Post] Wednesday March 9th, 2005 3:43:44 PM
The group takes a fews of the items immediately and leaves the rest for the return trip towards Ice Peak.
Aiden sets the pace and moves out across the skree zones, with careful foot placement for the others to follow. The group climbs ever higher and in a few hours an opening can be seen in the slope where perhaps things may level off.
As the group closes, the winds pick up, sending snow and ice raking across exposed skin and pounding through clothes and cloaks. But finally the crest is made and the efforts reveal their rewards.
A large alpin meadow shielded on the winward side of Burfell. A light snow cvers most of the ground, but the high day sun shows thick tundra grass growing well beneath as a great deal of the snow has been vanquished by the ever burning presence of the suns rays. As you pass to the leeward side, the temperature seems to jump almost 20 degrees and it almost feels like the deep long days of summer out on the black catching rocks.
A small single tree with three frail dry looking branches grows in the center of this plain, which is roughly 80 yards long and 40 yards wide. Beneath it grows a small collection of blue and wite pedalled flowers and just to the other side is the Red Flower of Kelda-Sigr, like a beacon against the green and white fields, a mere 120 odd feet away.
Cresting the rise directly opposite of you, come 6 individuals. Wrapped in similar furs you can see the steam of breath blast forth from thier mouths. At this distance more detail is hard to discern, but what can be seen are the weapons coming to hand, a pair of bows and a quartet of battle axes. One points across in your direction and bellows. "Bring me the heads of the ICERS! I wish to add to my collection!

With a blur of bow and fur, Nauth drops the pup and draws his bow with an arrow noched.
The young ranger's senses explode with warnings and advice and instincts as his eyes dart around the meadow. He even swears that he sees something in the shadows.
"Wunjos, behind me. Whoever you are, take heed of my word and leave us be. Our mission is higher than you can fathom and our guides are stronger than you imagination can conjure."

Aiden slowly pulled out his own rather large, and ugly looking double bladed axe. He readied himself for the onrush, knowing that the others would have to help keep the archers at bay through spell and missile.
However, any attacker coming within striking distance of his axe would feel his blade.

"WAAAUUUGHH!" Bohdi exclaimed in terror. His fright clouded his vision of any but the most obvious threats (Spot 5).
Shifting his crossbow into his hands, he drew a shaky aim and stepped five feet backward to take cover behind Nauthiz'Ull--well, he offered, didn't he?--while his thoughts sprang to the dagger tucked in his belt.
Faint aura of abjuration, eh? he thought to himself. A little dimensional door wouldn't hurt right about now.
He readied his aim at the closest of the fur-clad antagonists who was wielding a bow, and prepared to fire should any of the other group close to within 100' of his own group's position. "Take out the archers," he growled to the others with a calm he did not feel.

"We got more company, whether or not it's with them. A polar bear about 30 yards in and 20 yards left by those rocks. It almost appears to be hiding. I'll cover the flank in case the bear attacks, you guys take out those archers."
"It sounds like we may have a chance to put that spirit to peace, by exacting revenge on those responsible for their deaths. There can't be that many folks around here that collect heads."

It was pointed out to me that a cord of wood is rather large, and it would not have been possible for me to carry them all, and rather cumbersome to lug around one of them. Therefore, I would have had to just fill the backpack with as much as it could hold instead. Shouldn't affect things much unless we need a really big fire.

Frigg'Isa sees and hears the men from the other rise. She, however, does not see the polar bear that Garrett mentions (Spot 16). She is too focused on the incoming men.
"Aiden, are those Tuskers," she asks the tall boy.
"My sling isn't much good from here. I can do something when they get within about 100 feet or closer. When they get even closer, I can confuse one of them for a small time. That's about it."
Frigga pulls her sling from her belt and loads a bullet into it. She prepares herself for when the men get within her range (readies attack 2).

Nauth tells the group to seek cover and lets loose an arrow, which sails wide right.
Aiden pulls his axe and moves up to stand his ground next to Nauth.
Bohdi pulls out his trusty crossbow and loads it ready to fire. from behind Nauth.
Garret enlarges, doubling his already impressive size, his feet sink nicely into the snow. The cleric also informs the group of a polar bear along the rock wall to the left. Garret is presently behind Nauth and Aiden.
Frigga too, readies missile fire if the enemy comes into range.
Laughter rings across the meadow at Nauth's words. "You weak Icers are no match for the power of the Tusk!" The one talking stays on the ridge line as three of them move down across the meadow with axes in hand. (Now approx. 160' away)
The two bowman split left and right advancing a little and then firing. (approx dist. 220' 20' left and right respectively.) [Attack Aiden Hit AC 11 Miss] [Attack Nauth Hit AC 10 Miss]

Bohdi Nackle (AC 14, HP 7/7) d20+4=18 d6=5 Thursday March 10th, 2005 9:37:26 PM
Watching the arrows from their foes fly past might have scared the gnome under other circumstances, but, for some reason, at this moment it helped to clear his thoughts. The field began to look like a game board, and the savage battle the pieces, in his mind.
"Everyone, listen," he said grimly. "The most important thing is that we need to stick together--whatever happens. Garrett, you should be in front in the middle, with Nauth and Aiden on either side. Frigg can take cover behind Garrett; I'll stay behind Nauth. That way, we can help each other. We should let the ax guys come to us. We'll meet them here--Nauth, Garrett, and Aiden, you space yourselves out in a battle line and leave five feet apart between each other. Garrett can help both of you that way. Garrett, Aiden--you focus on defending yourselves until they get here. But no matter what, we all stay together. Got that? All right?"
Meanwhile, Bohdi shifted his aim to the approaching axmen. "Nauth, let's focus our fire on one of those ax guys--how about that middle one?" When the axman that Bohdi had indicated reached 80' from their group, Bohdi fired his crossbow toward the man. His thoughts clear and focused, this time his shot followed suit and flew straight (Attack 18, Damage 5).
ooc: In case it wasn't clear above, Bohdi's envisioning this:
Nauth (5') Garrett (5') Aiden Bohdi (5') Frigg
Bohdi will stay true to his word. Wherever Nauth goes, he's staying with (behind) him, but he's hoping that the others abide by the strategy he's laid out. He's readying a shot until the axmen hit 80', which at their current speed should be the end of this round.

Feeling a warm sensation coming from the thought of his wunjos workinng together efficiently, Nauthiz'Ull snaps another arrow from his quiver and nochs it.
"Do as Bohdi says, but take out the archers first, he has a knack for this sort of thing."
The dark-skinned boy then lets loose an arrow that finds true to the nearest archer.

"anyone know if those tusk folk are likely to have a pet bear? It seems to coincidental that it's just hanging out, half hidden nearby. I hate coincidences." Garrett calls out "I'm going to switch to bow also, and shoot at the tusks. If that bear moves in on us, Aiden, Nauth and I should maintain our line, moving slightly to put us between it and Bohdi and Frigg. The three of us will hopefully handle the bear quickly while Bohdi and Frigg'isa keep shooting at the tusks and perhaps buy us a little time. Just a contingency plan."

Garret and Aiden wait for the charging trio to arrive and Bohdi fires at the center of the charging axe weilders. The bolt strikes solid, but does not slow him but a step.
The three continue to run across the open field towards the group. (They have closed to 80')
The two bowman, one far right and the other far left, close to 180' and fire. [Attack Aiden Hit AC 1 Miss] [Attack Nauth Hit AC 7 Miss] The shots are far off mark.

Aiden took a deep breath and refused to respond to the others within the group, in particular, Garrett. It didn't seem right somehow, that the deaths of those they had found in the cave, were caused by the Tuskians.
Too much of the looty was in tact. Tuskians usually would take anything from their defeated foes back as trophies, at the very least, trade.
But as soon as one of the warriors charged within striking range, he would show where his new loyalties lay.

Bohdi and Nauth both let loose with another shot. The bolt sails wide right and high, but the keen marksmanship of the ranger is proven yet again. His arrow land solidly in the shoulder of the approaching axe man.
Garret and Aiden prepare for the melee as the three continue thier charge.
The two archers close another 40' (140' distant) and fire again at Aiden and Nauth. [Attack Aiden Hit AC 12 Miss] [Attack Nauth Hit AC 18 Dmg 8] The arrow strikes deep to the ranger's exposed stomach, even as Nauth sees his own arrow score.
Battle cries rip from the throats of the three men charging across the fields. Lifting the axes above thier heads for an overhand descent, they blast into the front ranks of Aiden, Garret and Nauth.
Aiden strikes the half-orc, wounding him, but Garret's attack goes high, not fully use to being able to use his height to it's full advantage.
The battle axes descend in hard viscious arcs. [Attack Aiden Hit AC 12 Miss] [Attack Nauth Hit AC 23 Dmg 10] [Attack Garret Hit AC 23 Dmg 8]
Blood sprays the ground and Nauth is quick to follow. His vision darkens and the bow falls from his grasp. The cold ground comes quickly.
As the ranger falls the tree in the center of the field instantly blossums. Each of the tree's branches producing three flowers of vibrant gold and white with just the faintest tint of black at the edges.
The bear too, suddenly seems spurred to action. Was it the fall of Nauthiz'Ull or did the one archer merely stray too close? Over 1800 pounds of bear pounds across the short distance between it and it's target. With a great swipe of its claw the archer is dragged down with a gurgle of protest and into the deep clutches of the polar bear.

Garrett yells back to Bohdi "They are probably saying the same thing to each other... Just get the one's still standing" as the snow all around Garrett and Nauth turns redder by the moment.

two children run and chase each other around a wall of snow. The girl is slower but her cleverness leads the skinny boy into her trap.
I gotchya Nauth! I gotchya good! No you didn't! I dodged and you touched my furs!
As the children bicker over their game, a stout and tall framed man looks upon them with a smile. He ties a piece of white cloth onto the shaft of an arrow and lets it loose through the air from the top of a wall of ice.
The flight of the arrow seems off at first and wobbles through the air, but in mid flight the ribbon catches teh full force of the passing wind and snaps with reassurance. The fluttering of the cloth catches the children's attention and the look up at the moment the arrow strikes the mound of snow behind them.
My children, you are obviously equal in your unique ways. It is time for our walk and lessons.....
The familiar voice spurs forth involuntary tears from the open and rolled back eyes of Nauthiz'Ull as the wheezing sound of father forces itself from the boy's lungs.

I'm assuming that the three ax foes are all dead or unconscious as a result of Bohdi's, Garrett's, and Aiden's attacks.
Bohdi fell to his knees beside the ranger Nauthiz'Ull and grasped the potion on his belt, which had only been handed to him this morning by Garrett, labeled Cure Light Wounds. Unstoppering the vial, he poured the liquid down Nauthiz'Ull's blood-soaked throat. "Come on, you bloody fool, live, damn you, live! Come on, you twit, no sense dying out here in the cold! Don't make me have to drag your worthless corpse all the way back to that bloody village--LIVE!"
The potion slid down the young ranger's throat and began to knit his wounds. (Cure Light Wounds = 3.) It was enough to stop the bleeding, but not enough for Nauthiz'Ull to regain consciousness.
Bohdi scoured the ranger's belt with his eyes and noticed Nauthiz'Ull's own potion. He turned to the others.
"Garrett, Aiden--get those last two pests! Frigg--Frigg! Frigg'Isa! Frigg'Isa, wake up, girl! Your brother needs you! Come on, woman! I need your healing potion over here, now!"
IF Frigg didn't respond: Frigg remained motionless, clearly shocked into inaction at the bloodbath and carnage around her. Bohdi shot a mental command at Squork. The raven flew the short distance toward the witch and, with its grasping claws, snatched at the potion at her belt, but missed. (Treating this as a grapple attempt on the potion vial, which has an AC of 13, per the DMG and per PHB formula of AC 10 -5 DEX +8 Fine size. Squork's claws attack is +4, but rolled a 10, which misses regardless.) "Come on, Frigg--WAKE UP!" the gnome cried.
IF Frigg responded of her own accord: Bohdi shot a mental command at Squork and the the bird flew toward Garrett and Aiden. Swirling around Garrett's head, the bird tried to serve as a distraction to any attackers. (Aid Another, DC 10 for +2 to Garrett's AC = 12 success.)

Garret downs the orc closing on him before he can strike and then strikes at the half-orc who just downed Nauth. A large wound is opened across his chest exposing ribs and lung, yet it seems through sheer adrenaline he still stands.
Aiden wounds his advasary who growls ferally at him.
Bohdi moves slightly to his left and lets loose a cone of shimmering color and the wounded orc between him and a badly wounded Nauth topples backwards to the ground.

With Bohdi and Garret's attentions Nauth feels life flow back into his body and his eyes flutter open, a small cough escapes his lips as he deeply breathes the air of Ice Vien once more.
Frigga, remains terror stricken behind the enlarged Garret.
Aiden's attack is deflected wide by the half orc whose eyes then narrow, as he seems to recognize the fighting style Aiden knows as having come from his own village.

"Aaaaarrrgh," the gnome grimaced at the black arrow with molting fletching that now protruded from his shoulder. In comparison to the gnome, it seemed huge. "On your feet, soldier!" he barked at Nauthiz'Ull.
He rose from the ground where he had been tending Nauthiz'Ull, dropped his club, and picked his crossbow back up from the ground. "You guys worry about Hairy over there--Nauthiz'Ull and I will take care of the archer! Right, Nauth? Now he's the biggest threat!"
Squork fluttered back around Bohdi as a distraction to the archer, but still ineffectually (Aid Another = 4, fails).
Actions: --Stand from prone (move) --Drop club (free action) --5' step, as needed --Pick up crossbow (move)
Spell list: Level 0: Detect Magic (x2), Light Gnome abilities: Ghost Sound, Dancing Lights, Prestidigitation, Speak with Burrowing Mammals Level 1: Feather Fall, Color Spray (cast), Endure Elements (cast)
DM Note You do not have to go Prone to administer a potion. I consider you only being on a knee, which to me is not Prone, so feel free to take a shot.
Bohdi ooc: Thanks. Still no shot this round, though, because he'd still have to load the x-bow. So, actions become: (1) drop club; (2) pick up x-bow; (3) load x-bow.
Nauthiz'Ull (AC17 HP3/10) d20+4=18 d8=7 Friday March 18th, 2005 11:56:35 AM
With blood still coating hte inside of his mouth, Nauth grimaces at the unceasing pain but grits his teeth and rise to his feet while drawing an arrow.
"You fool! Do you think that you will have the chance to get near my sister! If I have air in my lungs, you will not near her!"
A look of inner turmoil crosses the ranger's face and pain burns in his eyes. His bow is aimed at the "leader" but with a grunt he swings his aim at the archer and lets loose an arrow that will hopefully take the life from him. ================ Attack-18 Damage-7
Aiden (AC 16, HP 2/11) d20=19 d8=1 d20=10 d8=3 Friday March 18th, 2005 1:49:35 PM
Aiden's eyes narrowed as the glint of recognition seemed to pass between the two. It was a bloody battle, one which a warrior will fall and be forgotten...
He was NOT going to have Frigga be submitted to the horrors of what he remembered from Twin Tusks. And with added emphasis, he struck with his double bladed orken axe into the half orc.
To Hit (natural 19 + 4 = 23...which I 'believe' is a possible critical with this weapon (sorry no sheet in front of me), the follow up roll is a 14)
Damage: If not a critical 1 + 4 = 5 If it is a critical 5 (prior roll) + 7 = 12
Orc double axe is a crit threat on a natural 20 only, does x3 on crit
DM Post double axe is a 20 crit threat..
Blood and Ice Round 4 (DM Post) d20+2=10 Friday March 18th, 2005 3:22:07 PM
Garret moves over, but the enemy fighter blocks the long thrust of the cleric's sword. Garret calls to the others in a hope to inspire them?
Bohdi retrieves his crossbow and loads, bearing a mark at teh enemy archer.
Nauth, too get to his feet and witha curse and oath lets a shaft fly at the archer. Striking solidly to the orc's upper thigh.
Aiden grits his teeth and draws his own blood line through the half-orc's defenses, eliciting a growl of pain and anger at the wound.
Frigg remains petrafyied of the gruesomeness of what surrounds her.
The enemy archer draws his bead back to Nauth and lets fly again. [Attack Nauth Hit AC 10] The arrow sails high as he moves further right hoping a moving target will be harder to strike.
The Half orc lets a ferral howl blast forth in challenge to Aiden and steps hard in with his bloddied axe...
The last Half-Orc begins to run across the field quickly closing the distance...
Suddenly, a cold wind wraps around the great grey wall of Burfell and into the field. The blast pierces clothes and magic alike like the icey finger of Celsium himself. The two half-orcs stagger and drop to one knee, thier eyes rolling back into their heads as if the wind were Burfell itself speaking to them.
Nauthiz'Ull (AC17 HP3/10) d20=17 d8=4 Saturday March 19th, 2005 8:46:57 AM
A fire still rages in the young rangers chest as the words of threat upon Frigsa continue to echoe in his head.
A cold night indeed. So help me Ull'heimdall, you, Tusker scum, will feel the biting cold of Gargul's breath!
Nauths eyes water a bit from the biting cold winds that seem to have an affect upon the Tuskers, but he can still see a prime opportunity when it presents itself.
With a fluid motion another arrow is noched and the bead drawn. This time he takes careful aim at the one who threatened the dark-skinned boy's own blood. ============ Attack-17+4=21 Damage-4
Garrett d8+1=2 Saturday March 19th, 2005 10:12:51 AM
Seeing a good opportunity (and seeing Aiden not looking so good), Garrett casts CLW on Aiden for 2 whole hp. Witness the power.
