The Big Dream [DM Jerry] Saturday March 19th, 2005 1:05:38 PM
From that emptiness and nothingness of sleep comes a flicker of light.
It grows and begins to envelop. Your spirits rise out of your bodies to float together in a circle facing in.
A voice from somewhere deep within says, "Something's happening."
Some sort of collective elven effect is at work!
As you struggle to come to grips with these events, your conscious minds fade and a waking dreamlike state begins.
There is then a joining of minds. Elven minds. Minds that look at life in terms of centuries instead of years.
Nearby elves join in--some join to a lesser extent, being half-elves or other related species.
The pool of collective thought grows until it becomes Woldwide!
The overwhelming thought becomes "Why?"
An ancient being joining the mix replies, "This has happened twice before. This is the third time."
"What has happened before? comes the overwhelming response."
"This. Prepare and listen."
A common Elven Dream begins. ---------
You are floating...in space..?
You can see The Wold turning lazily beneath you, so very far below--slow but steady, the planet rotates, basking blissfully in the light of the bright golden disk hanging above it. Sunlight dapples the large fertile brown expanses of land dotted with areas of green forest...it sparkles across the waves of the blue-green ocean.
The Wold is as it is.
Suddenly you become aware that there are three smaller discs approaching the bright one, also at a slow but steady pace...you realize that the bright disk must be the sun, and the others are the moons of The Wold.
The three new discs align to cover the sun completely, leaving it and The Wold in darkness. But there--right in the middle of the now-black sun-disk--a pair eyes blink open, as though awakened from sleep.
The almond-shaped eyes--the bright, brilliant hue of sky and sea--look down upon The Wold. They widen in surprise, as though viewing the burgeoning world for the first time in a very, very long time...then the expression in the turquoise eyes grows rather sad. A tear forms and falls from one of the eyes as it blinks.
The eyes in the black sun narrow slightly--as though the unseen person to whom they belong has suddenly begun contemplating...and then the eyes blink again, once more brightening with the enlightenment of a great idea..!
The eyes glow warmly--if there were a face to go with them, you just know that it would have a happy, friendly grin in place--and The Wold, turning in its slow, steady pace, begins to grow green. Focusing on the planet, you can see that the forests of The Wold flourish and grow lush once more, spreading their fertile growth across the faces of the both the continent of Yrth and the Fragmented Lands, as the owner of the eyes laughs delightedly.
You swoop down from your lofty perch and find yourself standing in an ancient forest, Culverwood, breathing in the good green scent of the ancient trees. There is a dark, malevolent blot at the edge of your senses whom the collective knows to be Parnoth the oppressor--then suddenly, the blot disappears from sight and you hear the great beast's agonized screams.
More screams and cries ring in your ears now--the voices of those who oppose and harm Nature, the voices of those who would hold back the elves and make them lesser beings, the voices of evil. Too long they have been allowed to run free, but now they face their just reward. Through it all, the owner of the eyes continues to laugh.
The dream ends and you physically awaken with laughter still ringing in your ears.
Mira Sunday March 20th, 2005 6:01:04 PM
Mira picks one of the first rooms. She enters, standing just inside the doorway until the ranger walks by. Grabbing his arm, she pulls him into the room, and calling "'night!" to the others, she kicks the door shut.
...
Later, the sorcerer tries to sleep, but her rest is fitful as she tosses and turns. There is something happening, but any vision of what it is evades her as it dances at the edge of her consciousness.
(OOC: Assuming the dream is intended for Arm and Shadow.)
Shadow Sunday March 20th, 2005 7:21:02 PM
Shadow will take whatever room is given to him and will try and sleep, but not being in the big city makes it hard for him to sleep. So his unsettled sleep is no surprise for him, but he is disturbed by the weird glimpses of a major dream that he remembers when he wakes up. It is fairly unusual for him to remember his dreams, so this one has him on edge.
When the group gets back together for breakfast, Shadow will see what the others have to say about what he has dreamt. He hopes there is nothing about it, but it seems like there really might be something strange there.
Conner Sunday March 20th, 2005 7:41:42 PM
Conner finds the halfling ale much to his liking and eventually gives up on the small sized mugs and switches to drinking from the pitcher itself. When the evening draws to a close he stumbles to bed and sleeps deeply. Anyone sharing a room with the burly fighter will surely suffer a fitful night through his snoring.
In the morning he listens to Shadow tell of the dream and shrugs it off. "Not much for dreamin' m'self...sometimes when I've had a bit much to drink, but never as strange as that."
Kadaz Sunday March 20th, 2005 8:58:02 PM
Kadaz sleeps deeply after the huge meal of the night before. Birdie, the beneficiary of a huge plate of leftovers, sleeps at the foot of the bed. Both snore.
In the morning Kadaz listens intently as Shadow recalls the dream. "Elvish dreams. Parnoth? This halfling ale is stronger than I thought" is his comment. But he thinks deeply and is more troubled by the dream than he lets on. He pulls out his axe and starts to hone it. Never hurts to be prepared.
Uriel Monday March 21st, 2005 12:21:20 AM
{Did only Shadow and Arm see this?}
Uriel wakes uneasy, realizing that he has missed something. After dressing his unease has only grown and he meditates, praying to Domi for guidance and solace.
Feeling only marginally better, he goes down to breakfast, ordering sparingly of only some warm bread and butter with watered down ale.
DM Kathy Monday March 21st, 2005 12:38:07 AM
Of the party, only Arm experienced the entire dream, and Shadow caught glimpses of it. The rest of you did not experience it.
The next morning, however, you come down for breakfast and find Talereithin telling Master Stubblefallow all about the dream.
Evan Monday March 21st, 2005 5:48:05 AM
Evan sleeps soundly through the night, curled up next to Mira, quite content with his life at the moment. In the morning, he heads down to eat a hardy breakfast and listens to Shadows tale with interest, the only remembrance of any dream, one he certainly could not repeat in proper company.
Kadaz Monday March 21st, 2005 6:40:36 AM
Of all the group, Master Stubblefallow should best be able to interpret the dream or determine its significance. Kadaz waits to hear what he thinks of it.
Wilfire Ironhouse Monday March 21st, 2005 8:17:14 AM
Wilfire was up at the crack on dawn and quickly voiced his agitated when many of his companions slept later than he did.
"Ba'enof dey be shovin der drink in me face all eve, but dey alsa be sleepin' an' wastin me morn."
Luckily Wilfire's agitation was washed away when he heard about the dream.
"Surein dat be deh queerst dream I'ever heard. What'cha tink it mean?" Wilfire asked.
Arm Monday March 21st, 2005 11:25:16 AM
OOC: Sorry for not posting yesterday, but my gf's moving in on Friday, so there's TONS to do... :)
IC: Arm smiles gratefully at the sight of a full size bed to sleep in, and falls asleep almost immediately. When he awakes in the morning after "the dream", he cannot help but feel a bit disconcerted by it, even though it seemed to end on a happy note, as he rarely has dreams as vivid as this. Upon reaching the common room and hearing Talereithin telling the group the selfsame dream, Arm adds his input as well, "Aye, I too had the same dream last evening. I must say that I am somewhat disturbed by it all, and I have a strong feeling that something major will be happening soon, though I have no idea how we can prepare for it.".
Mira d20+8=15 Monday March 21st, 2005 10:22:49 PM
The sorcerer wakes before the dawn. She studies the sleeping ranger for a while, wondering what he might be dreaming. Feeling restless, she creeps from the bed, and fishes some of her scrolls out of their case. The beauty of the neat script and wonderful magical words delight her.
....
Later, she joins the rest of the party at breakfast and listens to the elves tale.
"This has happened twice before. This is the third time."
She ponders, trying to remember if she had ever learned of any ancient mysteries or magic traditions compatible with those of the Dream. (Knowledge Arcana=15)
Conner Monday March 21st, 2005 10:50:28 PM
Conner is surprised when he sits down at the table and hears Talereithin tell the same tale as Shadow. "How can this be, two of you having the same strange dream? What magic is this?" The fighter is clearly unhappy about the notion that someone or something is invading peoples thoughts.
Uriel Monday March 21st, 2005 11:25:43 PM
Uriel's unease continues as he mulls over the dream from the elves.
"I like it not, but that could be only because I don't understand it...," Uriel shakes his head and clears his throat.
"What now folks?" he asks in an attempt to move past the odd dream.
DM Kathy Tuesday March 22nd, 2005 2:12:03 AM
The halfling scholar listens soberly to Talereithin's report, and nod at each of you as you move over to join the conversation.
He smiles slightly at Arm's comment. "I believe you have the right of it, young Armathen," he says. "Something important is about to happen--or perhaps, it would be more accurate to say that something important wants to happen. We appear to be approaching a time for momentous decisions, and it would seem that the first of these decisions will fall to the elves.
"I now feel that my research here is more important than ever, but I must make haste." Leaning heavily on his cane, he gets to his feet. "We will be needed soon back in Plateau City, I think. Talereithin, if you would be so kind."
The young elf, still looking troubled, moves to assist Master Stubblefallow. "The rest of you can do as you like today," the scholar continues, "but don't stray too far. If all goes well, we can depart tomorrow."
Talereithin looks alarmed at this. "Master, you've not had time to recover from the journey here. Don't you think that--"
Master Stubblefallow cuts him off with a wave of his hand. "I'll be fine, my boy. We simply haven't the time. I'll rest when we're back in Plateau City." With that, they make their way to the door and out.
Mira racks her brain, but doesn't recall of ever hearing of anything like this.
Word begins to spread of the strange dream, and soon curious halflings begin "stopping by" the Angel Arms to see what they can hear of it.
Evan Tuesday March 22nd, 2005 5:34:53 AM
Finding that he has the day free, Evan decides to take a ride through the country to learn some of the terrain features of the area, in case they ever need to return. He returns back to town in time for lunch and hunts down Mira, to propose a picnic lunch for the two of them.
Kadaz Tuesday March 22nd, 2005 6:05:10 AM
Kadaz stands as Stubblefallow and Talereithin leave the inn. "I'm going to keep an eye on those two. We brought them safely this far and I want to keep it that way. Come on, Birdie, time to go to work."
Kadaz grabs up enough food for him and Birdie and leaves the inn. He will walk behind the halflings and stay outside of any building they enter, watching for anything odd. He is armed and armored, probably an unusual sight for this village.
Arm Tuesday March 22nd, 2005 6:13:17 AM
Arm addresses Talereithin and Master Stubblefallow, "If it would not be too much of a bother, I would very much like to spend the day with the two of you in an attempt to find out any more information about what is to transpire. Since we had the same dream, perhaps we can help each other in the research of the good Master here.". He looks at Talereithin hopefully.
Wilfire Ironhouse Tuesday March 22nd, 2005 8:17:01 AM
"If it's all da same wid'you I'd like ta accompany ya also" Wilfire offers. "And I promise not ta get in da way."
So long as the old halfling doesn't object, Wilfire will spend the day with him.
Shadow Tuesday March 22nd, 2005 8:54:31 AM
Shadow is unsure of what to do in this 'small' (no pun intended) town for a day. He will wander around looking for signs of those in his profession. Maybe he can get some more information about the town.
Conner d20-2=12 Tuesday March 22nd, 2005 8:57:26 PM
Conner spends the day in town, checking on the horses and carts and assisting with any repairs that may be required. He also spends a bit of time in the inn, washing back lunch with some of the same fine ale he tried the previous night. If approached by any of the locals he will do his best to pass the time of day and learn of the town, it's inhabitants, and any of the recent goings on. [Diplomacy / Gather Information = 12]
Uriel Wednesday March 23rd, 2005 12:56:34 AM
Uriel will practice for several hours and then take his new steed for a ride.
DM Kathy Wednesday March 23rd, 2005 2:23:26 AM
Evan spends some time outside of town, as does Uriel after a morning workout.
Arm, Wilfire and Kadaz opt to accompany the scholar, who happily grants their request to come along. "Although I'm afraid it will be rather dull for you," he warns.
Talereithin had the forethought to have the pony cart brought round so that Master Stubblefallow can be driven the short distance to the town's library. Once there, he alights and makes his way inside, exchanging a few greetings and pleasantries with other scholars there.
Arm and Wilfire follow him inside, squeezing through the door and doing their best to stay out of the way in the undersized building. Their day does indeed prove to be very dull--not to mention cramp-inducing--as they scrunch uncomfortably into out-of-the way places and watch the scholar read.
Outside, Kadaz remains alert for trouble but faces nothing more menacing than a flock of curious halflings.
Are you a real dwarf? What's your dog's name? Does he bite? Where are you from? Plateau City! Are you a real adventurer then? Have you ever seen a dragon? Have you ever killed an orc? How many princesses have you rescued? What's this Dream people keep talking about? Did you have the Dream? Well then, who did? Have you seen our new mill? It's pretty good, isn't it?
Back at the inn, and wandering about town, Conner and Shadow face similar curiosity from the townsfolk. There's a tinge of apprehension in some of their questions, especially the ones about the Dream and the recent prophecies.
Conner and Shadow both also hear all about the new mill, which just opened last week--no, two weeks ago it was--and it grinds wheat and barley just as quick as anything. No surprise, really, considering that Marlys Quickfield designed the workings. Clever girl, Marlys. Perhaps you'd care to come take a look at it?
Aside from overwhelming curiosity and leg cramps, however, nothing alarming happens during the day, and that evening you meet again back at the Angel Arms.
Evan Wednesday March 23rd, 2005 6:01:18 AM
Evan reluctantly returns to town, to the endless questions from the halfling s that he is unable to answer. Leaving a wake of curious, frustrated halflings behind, he makes his way back to the alehouse for a well-deserved drink.
Arm Wednesday March 23rd, 2005 6:03:42 AM
While in the library, Arm pulls Talereithin to the side and, asking in a low voice so as both not to be heard and to not disturb those around them, says "So what do YOU make of this whole affair? I know that I am not a full-blood, but my alliegance is true to our heritage, and this worries me to no end...ESPECIALLY since we're apparently supposed to cause things to happen to begin the cycle.". He then goes on to tell him of what the seer said back at Samson's, as well as his fears of something bad happening and everyone blaming him for it, even though it wasn't his fault.
Kadaz Wednesday March 23rd, 2005 6:12:09 AM
Thanks to his background as a city guard Kadaz is used to standing all day outside a building and watching people walk by. But he is not used to having so many questions asked of him. "Yes. Birdie. Not if you're nice to him. Plateau City. Yes, I am. Only once. Not yet. None yet. I don't know. No I didn't. I don't know. Not yet."
Birdie, on the other hand, will shamelessly perform for the halflings, confusing them with children who he likes to play with. He spends the day running and playing with any halfling who is willing. He is so tired by evening that Kadaz has to carry him back to the inn.
Wilfire Ironhouse Wednesday March 23rd, 2005 8:02:13 AM
Wilfire did whatever he could to help the old halfing during the day, and also took a moment to communicate what the seer said about him.
"What'cha make'a it?" he asked
Later, when at the Angels Arms, Wilfire eats feverishly, while doing his best to tolerate those with drinks around him.
Shadow Wednesday March 23rd, 2005 9:11:49 AM
Shadow is not used to the attention he is receiving and returns to the Angel Arms sooner than he would like to sit in some peace and quiet. He was disturbed by the glimpses of the dream and what it might mean, but he cannot figure it out. He will remain in the quiet inn/tavern waiting for his companions to return. He definitly feels out of place here.
Mira d20+4=7 Wednesday March 23rd, 2005 5:51:49 PM
Mira keeps a low profile, hiding out in her room most of the morning reading and re-reading her new scrolls. She takes Evan up on the pic-nic idea, and spends the afternoon on the outskirts of town, as far away from the inquisitive halflings as possible.
Returning to the inn, she joins up with the rest of the party. "Was the day profitable for you?" she asks the elder halfling. (Gather Info=7) But she has trouble hearing any answer over the din of the regulars.
Conner Wednesday March 23rd, 2005 6:39:41 PM
With nothing better to do, and wary of spending the rest of the day, not to mention the rest of his purse, in the inn, Conner accepts the invitation to visit the new mill and meet Marlys Quickfield.
While at the mill the fighter will, if allowed, examine the inner workings of the mill to better understand how it is an improvement over conventional mills.
Uriel Wednesday March 23rd, 2005 11:04:15 PM
Uriel comes back tired and exhausted, asking around about bathing facilities to get a bath before seeking food and drink. His mind seems more settled as his appetite is back and seems to relish the well-cooked food of the halfings.
DM Kathy Thursday March 24th, 2005 1:38:02 AM
To Arm, Talereithin replies, "I honestly do not know. If Master Stubblefallow is correct, a time may soon come when we elves must make an important decision, and I fear that if we choose wrong, the consequences could be dire." He gives you a wry smile. "It would be easier, of course, if we knew what the right choice was, but I doubt that will be any clearer than it is right now. These things never seem to work out that way."
"A Sleeper, eh?" Master Stubblefallow replies to Wilfire. "Well, that certainly seems to fit what the elves saw in their Dream. Who is this Sleeper, I wonder, and what are his intentions? Should he be awakened, or lulled back to sleep? I wonder..." He trails off, lost in thought, and is soon off to the other side of the library in search of a particular scroll or tome.
Birdie is a hit with the locals, as is Kadaz with is patient answering of their questions. Conner also scores points by going to look at the new mill. He finds that the design is fairly standard, but the individual pieces of the mill have been crafted with a high degree of precision, so that they work together with smooth efficiency.
Eventually, you all meet back at the Inn. "I found more information, my dear," the scholar replies to Mira, "but unfortunately it says pretty much the same thing as the books I had back in Plateau City. There were one or two items, though..." He breaks off and shakes his head with a smile. "I think the trouble is that we none of us can predict the future," he says. "There have been signs and portents, and soothsayers with warnings, but no one can say exactly what it all means."
He seems to lapse into a professorial mode as he continues, "We in the Society began investigating these signs, if you recall, because there was some indication that the events they pointed to might involve the dragon Parnoth. I think last night's Dream demonstrates pretty clearly that he is, in some way, involved. The question is, how is he connected to the Sleeper? I wish I knew."
The mood at your table is thoughtful and a little apprehensive--but at least the food is good. Tonight there is lamb stew, savory with fresh herbs. There is also ham for those who don't care for stew. Fresh-baked bread and fresh butter accompany all the meals, and there's plenty of the excellent ale.
"We return to Plateau City in the morning," Master Stubblefallow announces at dinner. "I have done as much research here as I think is useful. I'd like to stay a bit longer--it's been years since I've been home--but I can't help but feel that we'll be needed." He smiles at you all. "For what will Plateau City do, after all, without her fine adventurers to protect her?"
Evan Thursday March 24th, 2005 5:56:49 AM
Evan quickly grows drowsy after such a relaxful day and pleasant evening. Its a shame that the scholar could not learn more, it would have been nice to extend this journey. Evan has enjoyed being outside the city for a bit and even more so, the closeness that grows between he and Mira when they share a room at an inn. As Evan savors an ale, listening to the stories passing about as happens in all inns, he remembers the locusts and signs to Mira that someone should tell the halflings in case the swarm turns this way.
Shadow Thursday March 24th, 2005 11:12:29 AM
Shadow was about to drift off to sleep at the table as the discussion was around this mysterious Sleeper, but he is brought back awake when the scholar says they will be leaving for Plateau City tomorrow. He is excited to get back to the city.
Kadaz Thursday March 24th, 2005 5:48:51 PM
After supper Kadaz will talk to the others in the party. "I'd like to keep a guard on Master Stubblefallow this evening. It's been a smooth trip so far and I'd like to not have anything go wrong now. I suggest Wilfire and I, not being so tall, split the night watch just outside his room. Could 2 or 3 of you humans take watches outside the inn or in the common room?"
Wilfire ironhouse Thursday March 24th, 2005 7:11:28 PM
"Aye, we'll keep da ol'fellar saefe and soun." Wilfire responded. "But firs I be needin a wee bit'a rest."
With that Wilfire head to his room to rest, until which time he was needed to stand watch at Master Stubbleallow's door.
"Ya waeke me fer he goes a'sleep, yes?" Wilfire asked the others as he got up to go to his room.
Mira d20+2=5 Thursday March 24th, 2005 7:22:02 PM
Mira sits beside Evan and partakes quietly of the meal. She signs to Evan, and if he is in agreement, she will volunteer that she and Evan will take an early watch outside the inn.
Instead of standing in obvious watch, she will link arms with the ranger, and pace casually up and down the street in front of the place, enjoying the evening air. She will discuss her thoughts about the dream recounted by those with elvish blood. "I wonder what it all means?" she will say, not really expecting an answer. Having eyes only for her companion, she doesn't see much (Spot=5).
Conner d20+5=20 d20+3=4 d20+2=21 Thursday March 24th, 2005 8:53:37 PM
Conner agrees to stand a watch outside the inn. When Mira and Evan call for him he takes his place in a suitable vantage point. Many long hours of guard duty and night patrol have prepared the fighter well for just such a circumstance, however the darkness that falls over the town at night prevents him from seeing much of anything. [Fortitude to avoid falling asleep=20, spot=4, listen=21]
Uriel d20+4=13 d20+4=10 d20+4=19 d20+4=22 Thursday March 24th, 2005 11:48:51 PM
Uriel agrees to a watch also, doing a random roving watch around the inn. Spots:13,10,19,22
DM Kathy Friday March 25th, 2005 2:37:02 AM
You maintain a watch over the scholar and the inn throughout the night, but nothing untoward happens. The following morning, a very sleepy group of adventurers meets up with Talereithin in the common room.
"Master Stubblefallow is still asleep," the elf says, "and I think it's best we not disturb him. For all his brave talk, he is quite frail to have undertaken such a journey, and I want him well-rested."
As he speaks, Arm has the oddest sensation. It's as if he can hear Talereithin's words echo, or perhaps it's the other man's sentiments. Whatever the cause, Arm feels a faint glimmer of the feeling he experienced while in the Dream, a feeling that all the elves of the Wold were joined in a single consciousness.
Talereithin frowns in puzzlement. "Did you say something?" he asks Arm.
Arm Friday March 25th, 2005 5:59:40 AM
Perhaps it was due to the lack of new information on what they are destined to do (or NOT to do as the case may be), but Arm slept very little the night before. When he hears Talereithin's words repeated, he mentally shrugs it off as merely lack of sleep. However, when Talereithin asks HIM if he said something, he is jolted back to full alertness. The puzzlement quite evident in his face he replies, "Nay, I said nothing, my friend. BUT, I heard YOUR words repeated after your last statement...if I may, let us try something. Try thinking of something in this room or about the building itself, and I will see if I can "hear" what you're thinking about.".
Conner Friday March 25th, 2005 9:09:49 AM
Conner looks up from his porridge with surprise. "Still asleep? Is he alright? He seemed very anxious for us to get an early start last night. Maybe Uriel should have a quick look in on him."
Kadaz Friday March 25th, 2005 1:17:37 PM
"Yes, please make sure Master Stubblefallow is ok. If he likes we can delay our departure. We are at your disposal." Kadaz goes back to eating a very large breakfast. If this is the adventuring life, he is looking forward to more if it.
Shadow Friday March 25th, 2005 10:21:17 PM
Shadow joins the others after a night not spent in full sleep. He listens to the group show their concern for the halfling sage. He does pay close attention to the conversation between Arm and Talereithin.
Mira d20+8=22 Sunday March 27th, 2005 5:38:25 PM
Mira listens intently to the conversation between Arm and Talereithin. The sorcerer ponders what appears to be some form of collective open-mindedness or telepathy, (Knowledge Arcana) and wonders what magic is afoot in the Wold.
"What about you Shadow? You hear anything?" she asks the rogue.
Uriel Sunday March 27th, 2005 9:41:53 PM
Uriel seems oblivous to the interaction between Arm and Tal...
He seems to have retreated to that place he has been to of late, inside himself.
DM Kathy Sunday March 27th, 2005 11:12:23 PM
"Very well," Talereithin replies to Arm, and closes his eyes for a moment in concentration.
Arm concentrates too, and receives no clear picture of anything the other man might be thinking about. His attention is pulled, however, toward the side of the room the bar is on.
Mira has never heard of a phenomenon quite like this, but is able to deduce that since the Dream seems to have linked the minds of all the elves in the Wold, that link could very well still be in place.
The others express some concern for the scholar. "I hate to wake him," Talereithin says again. "He needs his rest. If you would like to check on him, please do so quietly; I'd rather not have him disturbed."
Arm d20+4=22 Monday March 28th, 2005 5:43:22 AM
Arm shakes his head, "Alas, I can feel nothing as to what may be on your mind. However, while I was concentrating, I felt drawn to the bar area.". He then idly scans the area to see if he picks up anything of interest (spot=22).
Kadaz d20+2=13 d20+1=5 d20+1=9 d20+2=13 d20+3=6 Monday March 28th, 2005 6:32:30 AM
Kadaz replies to Talereithin's offer. "I will check on him." Kadaz goes to Master Stubblefallow's room and very quietly opens the door. He peeks in and listens for the sound of a halfling breathing or sees covers moving slightly up and down. He will remain in the doorway for several minutes. If he can't determine the status of the sleeping sage from there he will move quietly into the room and to the side of the bed. Birdie walks along at his side, also trying to move quietly but not doing nearly as good a job as Kadaz. (move silent 13, listen 5, spot 9, move silently 13, move silent 6).
WilFire ironhouse Monday March 28th, 2005 8:17:08 AM
Wilfire went with Kadaz, but waited at the door, for he did not want his clanky plate to wake the old halfling.
Shadow d20+2=21 d20+2=22 Monday March 28th, 2005 11:56:52 AM
Shadow will wait in the bar area for the sage. He will keep an eye out for anything interesting. (Spot=21 and Listen=22 nat. 20)
Conner Monday March 28th, 2005 7:13:27 PM
Conner finishes his breakfast, wipes his face with the small napkin provided for just that purpose and rises from the table. "I'll get the carts and ponies hitched up for the trip."
The fighter heads for the door, careful to avoid removing the top of his head on the low hanging beams of the inn.
Mira Monday March 28th, 2005 7:42:08 PM
Wrinkling her brow, Mira signs to Evan, Highlight to display spoiler: { I'm kind of worried about the old geezer. What if he kicks the bucket while under our care? Would these Halflings, or the Society hold us responsible? }
Mira holds her head in her hands and reflects on the party's past. Mishap after unprofitable mishap had been their lot. There had been a sense of accomplishment in helping the leatherworker and his son, but pretty much every other venture had been fraught with mishaps and misunderstandings. Mira clasps her hands together in front of her, and stares at her interlaced fingers. What did the future hold for her, and for her friends, the solid fighter Conner, stalwart Kadaz, troubled Wilfire, conflicted Arm, faithful Uriel, the secretive Shadow, and...Evan, her handsome ranger?
Mira sighs, and stands up from the table, making ready to follow the dwarves and check on the elderly Halfling. She hopes her premonitions of trouble are just her imagination.
Uriel Tuesday March 29th, 2005 12:40:05 AM
Uriel is unsure what to think of the link between the elves. He mutters something about "...the old man needing his rest" and goes to check on his horse and then he goes to get some more rest after his night watch.
DM Kathy Tuesday March 29th, 2005 1:32:53 AM
"Well, the area was right," Talereithin replies. "I was thinking of that tapped keg behind the bar--the second one from the left. There does appear to be some kind of link. How odd."
As he speaks, Arm continues to experience the strange sensation of having an idea what the man is going to say before he says it. It's very odd.
Meanwhile, Kadaz enters the scholar's room, and can hear soft snores coming from the bed. He moves to the bedside and sees the halfling sleeping peacefully, with no indication of any trouble.
That assessment is confirmed a few hours later when Master Stubblefallow himself makes his way to the table. "You shouldn't have let me sleep so long," he chides Talereithin. "We must return to Plateau City."
"You are exhausted, sir," Talereithin replies calmly, "And you will do no one any good if we get you back to the city half-dead."
Fortunately, the rest of you have not been idle, and the party departs immedately after the scholar has breakfasted. Soon you have left the pleasant little city of Angel Springs behind you, and are once again crossing the Red Hills.
That evening as they sleep, Arm and Talereithin receive an invitation--or perhaps it is a command. All the elves and half-elves of the Wold will be gathering for a meeting at that place in dreams known as the Giggling Ghost. They will discuss the Dream, what it means, and what they should do about it. Non-elves may attend, but will not be permitted to participate. The meeting will begin in a few days' time.
[OOC: In the real world, the meeting will begin on April 1, and posts are to be made to the GG board. Arm will attend; the rest of you can watch, or you can continue on this board with a mini-adventure I will come up with. Please discuss both in and out of character what you would prefer.]
Evan Tuesday March 29th, 2005 5:36:49 AM
Evan tries to reassure the lovely sorceres....sorcerer when she grows worried about the halfling and the coming events. He, himself, is a bit excited over the idea of facing off against a dragon again and hopes that the elves will allow others to join their adventure. In the meantime, he will work on getting the old halfling safely back home, and on trying to make the worried Mira smile more.
Arm Tuesday March 29th, 2005 5:58:04 AM
Arm brightens a bit when he finds out that he CAN in fact read Tal's mind, but at the same time remains troubled for the same reason.
When the company awakes in the morning, Arm confirms with Tal regarding the meeting, then relates the details to the rest of the group, "I fear we must leave you for a bit, for how long I do not know. My sincerest hope is that I will have valuable information for us once the meeting has concluded. As the dream said, any of you are welcome to accompany us, but only elves and their kin can participate.". Turning to Mira, he says, "If I were to prefer ANY of us to attend, I would like YOU to come with us, my dear. Your scholarly ways are an advantage at this point, and the information you and I gather can be of great import. I'd be honored if you'd accompany us.".
Kadaz Tuesday March 29th, 2005 6:29:00 AM
As he rides on the wagon with the reins in his hands Kadaz wonders what in the Wold is powerful enough to send the same dream to all those of Elvish blood. And does he really want to encounter it?
The Giggling Ghost meeting is for those who dreamed the dream. Kadaz is content to let those invited attend. "Someone has to stay here and keep the world safe" is his response. After all, what better time for an opponent to create trouble?
Conner Tuesday March 29th, 2005 7:57:34 AM
Conner takes up his now familiar position on the flank as they head back towards Plateau City.
A meeting of elves, all babbling on about a dream in a language he doesn't understand holds little interest for the fighter. "I think I'll miss that chance, thanks though".
Shadow Tuesday March 29th, 2005 9:57:03 AM
Shadow is releived to see the sage up and about and is ready to get back to Plateau City. He will move to the front of the group as they leave the halfling village.
When Arm discusses the meeting at the Giggling Ghost, Shadow feels some releif that he was not included, even though he does have some elf blood in him. He will stay with the group at the apartment (when they get back to PC).
OOC: Actually, I would like to see what is going on and hopefully will have time to check out the posts at the GG.
Mira Tuesday March 29th, 2005 5:27:40 PM
Mira flushes at the compliment paid her by the bard. "It will be a magical thing, this meeting of the fey people," she answers. "I would be honoured to attend, if guests are permitted," she bows her head in Talereithin's direction, and then again in acknowledgement of the favour bestowed upon her by Arm.
Her green eyes catch those of the ranger, and a worried look flickers across her face. I'll see you back in the city, okay? she signs to Evan.
Uriel Wednesday March 30th, 2005 12:05:17 AM
Uriel will meditate on the happenings with the elves when he gets a chance. If anything comes to him, he will evaluate it and decide on whether or not to go to the Ghost. Otherwise, his inclination lies with Conner, not in some elf gathering.
Wilfire Ironhouse Wednesday March 30th, 2005 1:46:16 AM
"Room fer a dwarf on yer cart" Wilfire asked when they set out for Plateau City, for he longed to catch up on some sleep.
OOC- I should let you all know that my family and I are 3 weeks away from moving from Seoul to Toronto. As such, my posts might slow a bit.
DM Kathy Wednesday March 30th, 2005 2:11:07 AM
Mira expresses an interest in attending the meeting of the elves, but the rest of the companions seem content to hear about it later.
You continue your journey toward Plateau City. Fortunately, the weather holds and you encounter no more insect swarms. Several days later you find yourselves in the familiar environs of the city.
Talereithin smiles as he bids you farewell. "Thank you for your help," he says, "and your companionship. I'm not sure whether Master Stubblefallow and I accomplished anything, but if we did it was because of your help."
The scholar also sings your praises. "It's a very handy thing, to have a group of adventurers as traveling companions," he says with a smile. "I enjoyed our trip, although I wish I could have stayed longer in Angel Springs. Another time, eh? In the meantime, I expect to hear great things from you."
Evan Wednesday March 30th, 2005 5:48:01 AM
Evan smiles reassuringly to Mira and signs to her to go, he will be waiting for her when she returns to the city. But when he sees the charming Armathen and Mira together, the wave of jealousy that sweeps through him surprises even him.
Evan spends the trip back to the city in quiet contemplation, alternately worried about the subject of the elven meeting and the closeness that grows between Mira and Arm.
Arm Wednesday March 30th, 2005 6:08:18 AM
Unaware of the conflict he has caused between Mira and Evan, Arm smiles back at Mira and says, "Your company is very MUCH welcome, my dear. You have already proven yourself of great worth to our group, and your counsel in this matter would be much appreciated.". Casting a sidelong glance at Tal to make sure he is in agreement, he continues, "We'll be glad to have you.".
Once they arrive back at the City, Arm spends a good portion of the time before they head out for the meeting in his room, where he does his best to meditate and clear his mind of previous worries in an attempt to keep his mind as sharp as possible for what is to come.
Kadaz Wednesday March 30th, 2005 6:53:02 AM
Kadaz spends the first day home going over his armor and weapons, cleaning and sharpening everything. Then he resumes a routine of training and playing with Birdie in the morning, then wandering the city in the afternoon, trying to find something interesting do to. This will include a swing by the city dump, checking to see if there are any more disappearances.
Shadow Wednesday March 30th, 2005 9:55:07 AM
A great weight (self-imposed of course) is lifted off of Shadow when the group arrives back iin Plateau City. He has a slight spring in his step once again and he realizes just how much he is unfamiliar and uneasy about the outside world (from his home PC). He will return with the rest of the group to the apartment get his traveling gear stored away and then he will go check in with the guild to see if they have missed anything while they were gone.
Mira Wednesday March 30th, 2005 7:54:32 PM
Back in Plateau City Mira goes into panic mode.
Elves! A council of elves! A fey assembly!
The woman looks sourly on her faded and worn secondhand robe. When her eyes light on her handsome leather belt with the many laces and tooled dragon, she feels better. As she rumages about for what she thinks might be useful to her, an obscure remembrance becomes clearer.
Leaving her stuff in a jumble on the bed, the sorcerer grabs up her purse and the newly won kama and dashes through the apartment. "Be right back!" she calls as she pelts down the street.
(OOC: Mira will see if The Catacombs has an affordable Elf Vision spell available for sale.)
Wilfire Ironhouse Wednesday March 30th, 2005 8:46:58 PM
Wilfire was weary from a night spent on guard and two days on the road, so the first thing he did was hit the sack and catch up on his sleep.
After waking up Wilfire decided to see if he could find a good smith shop where he might be able to earn a little extra income on the side.
According to Wilfire: "Som git der relaxin wit readin nex'ta' a'river. I git mine wit a hammer in han, an some plate ta poun'on."
Conner Wednesday March 30th, 2005 11:36:16 PM
Conner dumps his pack in the corner of his room shared with Kadaz. With a grin on his tatooed face, he says "I'm for Sampson's best ale, and some company. Anyone care to join me?"
Conner won't tarry long, since he is anxious to call on the buxom serving wench, Amy, who works at his favourite watering hole.
Uriel Thursday March 31st, 2005 12:02:24 AM
Uriel, having recieved no insight into the elven gathering, will stay with the others. He will make arrangements for his horse's upkeep and go to the apartment.
On hearing of Samson's, Uriel assents. "Nothing like a nice ale after a dusty road."
DM Kathy Thursday March 31st, 2005 1:18:32 AM
Back in the familiar rhythms of Plateau City, most of you relax. Kadaz repairs his gear and plays with Birdie; Wilfire finds things to pound on. Shadow checks in with the "widows and orphans," who tell him there may be a job for him and "those people you've taken to hangning out with." Conner and Uriel head to Sampson's to partake of good ale and pleasant company. Amy is glad to see Conner.
Arm is looking forward to the meeting, and Mira is in a state of pleased excitement. Only Evan seems dispirited to be back in the city.
The day after you arrive, Maline calls at the apartment to deliver your agreed-upon fee. "Thank you again for your help," she says, depositing a large sack on the table. "I don't know what would have happened if Master Stubblefallow had had to face that swarm with only Talereithin for protection. Are you going to the meeting? I'm planning to go, even if I'm only allowed to watch. I don't think it's fair, though."
The sack proves to contain 200 platinum pieces (2000 gp value).
Arm Thursday March 31st, 2005 5:53:47 AM
Arriving in the common room just in time to witness Maline's arrival, he smiles at her and says, "Not to fear, my lady. Sometimes one who doesn't participate gains more than those who do. Our own Mira will be attending as well, so you are welcome to sit with her if you wish.". He then thanks her for the payment, asks Uriel to hold his share of it until he returns from the meeting, and makes preparations to leave the next day for the meeting (if it will take a while for them to arrive there, he will go and seek out Tal to see what time he will be leaving.).
When the time DOES arrive for their departure, he bids the rest of the company farewell, "Stay safe in any endeavors you may make until we return".
Shadow Thursday March 31st, 2005 10:32:48 AM
Shadow again feels some releif when he enters the familiar grounds of the Guild. When he is meeting with the "widows and orphans" they mention something about a job that might just fit him and his new companions. "Who would I need to talk to?" he says to find out more information about this.
Wilfire Ironhouse Thursday March 31st, 2005 6:40:38 PM
Wilfire heads out looking for a smith shop in hopes that he can earn a little extra income when he's not out adventuring.
Mira Thursday March 31st, 2005 7:11:55 PM
Returning to the apartments, Mira disappears into the room she shares with Evan in order to prepare for the gathering to which she has been invited. Instead of her plain travelling clothes, the sorcerer dons a long flowing gown of green fabric cinched at the waist by the leather belt with the intertwined dragons. Her customary tight plait, is gone, replaced by dark coils piled atop her head and one long loose tendril resting on her shoulder. Her ankle length cloak is drapped over one arm.
"I'm ready to go when you are, Arm," she announces.
Kadaz Thursday March 31st, 2005 7:36:00 PM
Kadaz will gladly share a drink or two with Conner. "First one's on me" he offers.
Uriel Thursday March 31st, 2005 11:52:33 PM
Uriel looks down at the dwarf, "Are you paying for mine too?" as they head to Samsons.
Conner Thursday March 31st, 2005 11:54:45 PM
The fighter is happy to sit with his friends and hoist a few. He'll keep an eye on the barmaid, and wink at her should she make eye contact with him.
"So what's our next job?" he'll ask.
DM Kathy Friday April 1st, 2005 2:13:28 AM
Mira and Arm make their preparations for the gathering. It seems odd, after all the time spent getting ready, to simply lie down and sleep. But the Giggling Ghost is a place of dreams, and dreams are the only way to get there. [OOC: I'm told the preliminary posts for the GG meeting have already started, so you two should feel free to head over there whenever.]
Kadaz and Uriel enjoy some drinks and cameraderie at Sampson's. Conner is there, too, but his attention is clearly on the luscious Amy.
Wilfire spends some time wandering the Guild Quarter, looking to get hired on as a smith. He has several offers, mostly from human smiths who understand what the phrase "dwarven-made" adds to the value of most items.
Shadow inquires after the possible job. "Well, it's like this," replies Grey, his contact. "One of our members, a fellow by the name of Landren, has been nabbed by the Guard. They're pretty sure he's the man who committed a particular theft, and the only thing that's keeping him out of the dungeon is the fact that they can't find the goods. What he'd like," Grey grimaces, and Shadow realizes that he disagrees with Landren's decision. "What he'd like to do is turn the stuff in and see if it'll get him off. He told me where he stashed it, and I can tell you. Thing is, it's not going to be enough to just hand it back; you've somehow got to convince the Guard to let him go."
Grey continues, "I understand you've got a paladin in that group of yours, and a former guard. You might just be the bunch to pull thiss off. Anyway, we'll pay you just for trying; we've got to at least make it look like we're trying to help Landren or we'll lose members. You interested?"
Evan Friday April 1st, 2005 5:42:02 AM
Evan's eyes widen considerably when Mira emerges from their room, prepared for the meeting. Mira's quiet beauty is what first caught his attention, but now, her appearance leaves him breathless.
When Mira joins Arm, Evan slips into their room and begins to prepare the room for Mira's journey. He makes certain that the window is well covered so that no stray beam of sunlight will pull Mira from the meeting. While he is not happy at the thought of Mira and Arm being together at the meeting, he did tell Mira early on that she should be willing to explore relationships with other men to make sure her emotions for him were real. He just did not realize what that would mean to his own emotional state. Evan places candles around the room, candles that will be lit once Mira has fallen asleep so that when she awakens, no matter what time of day or night, she will be able to see. Surveying the room, Evan collects his bedroll and sets it beside the door so that he can grab it this evening without waking Mira as he feels it would probably be best if he slept in the common room so that he won't accidently awaken her. His final preparation is to place a pitcher of water and a glass next to Mira's bed so that she will be able to quench her thirst when she awakens.
Once he is satisfied that he has done what he can to prepare for Mira's dream journey, he returns to the common room with the others, keeping his expression as mild as possible so that neither will know of the turmoil that boils within him.
Mira Friday April 1st, 2005 7:27:41 AM
With a quizical look, Mira returns to her room. She smiles warmly at Evan when she sees the effort he has made to prepare the room for her 'journey'. She gives his arm a squeeze, and brushes her lips against his cheek. "I'll be okay, Evan," she whispers before she lies down on her cot. Despite her excitement, sleep comes easily.
Shadow Friday April 1st, 2005 10:08:44 PM
Shadow listens to Grey's explanation about the 'job' the Guild has for the group. He then says, "I will have to talk to my companions to see if they would be willing to try this. Could you give me an idea of the pay?"
"Hey everyone, I have been approached by my guild to try and help a member. This fellow was nabbed by the guards for some type of misunderstanding. He says that he did not take the stuff, but does know where the stuff is. The guild would like us to turn the stuff in and convince them that he is innocent. I really don't know about his innocence or guilt, but it would be up to the group if they would like to do this." He will be honest with his new companions becuase he knows that if he is not honest and they find out they will never be able to trust them again.
Kadaz Sunday April 3rd, 2005 8:03:37 AM
Kadaz is skeptical. During his time a guard he heard enough 'it was just a misunderstanding' arguments. He frowns at Shadow.
But getting items back to their rightful owner is the proper thing to do. "Shadow, if we do this will this person promise not to get involved in any more misunderstandings?"
Conner Sunday April 3rd, 2005 9:42:25 AM
Conner listens to Shadow's proposal with a healthy dose of cynacism. "Sounds to me like the guard understands alright, course the jails are full of nothin' but innocent men. Right Kadaz?"
The fighter thinks about it for a moment before continuing. "Easiest way to get this fellow off is to make it look like someone else was the thief...Shadow, how much do you trust these people, and how do we protect ourselves from being fingered for the theft if we do recover the goods?"
