On the Path (DM Cayzle) Thursday March 31st, 2005 11:42:33 AM [This it the Wednesday evening DM post, believe it or not! Sorry!]
After the sounds of the night, it is a relief to have a course of action. That's exactly what Tratain's spell offers, and through the divine guidance of the divination, Tratain leads the way.
The 10-minute-per-level duration is just long enough, as it turns out. After a couple hours, the group finds itself deep in jungle. Up ahead, you see a stand of extremely tall trees. And in your path, standing in your way, is a party of elves, with one gnome as well.
One of the elves, standing in the lead, is the elf you recognize from your vision -- presumably the one who wrote the note.
He steps forward and speaks in common.
"Just in time! Just in time! You sure do believe in cutting it close, don't you? But you made it! That's what counts. Well, come on! Come on! There is no time to lose."
He turns and heads into the trees, clearly expecting you to follow at speed.
The gnome smiles and adds, "By the way, that's Harlee and I'm Irvine. Welcome. Now come along quick!"
If you follow, you end up in a huge clearing with tall trees all around. Looking up, there are houses built (or growing?) in the trees. There is a big bonfire in the center of the clearing, and its flames are green.
Sarigar and Black Paws Thursday March 31st, 2005 12:04:56 PM
The brothers feel particularly at home here. Never have they seen a place so in touch to nature as they feel. They dash around from tree to tree, shrub to shrub, checking out all the sights and smells around them. If there's somewhere creatures go when they die, this is where they want to go.
Draax Thursday March 31st, 2005 1:59:44 PM
Draax is somewhat apprehensive by the way the elf just led them away without any explanation. His mind is put a little at ease when the gnome speaks up, but not by much. He sighs and then follows the others because he sees no other option. He hopes that he is not making a mistake by being so trustful to strangers.
He looks at the green flames and wonders what it means. He waits with the others hoping that their host will explan what is going on.
Tratain Thursday March 31st, 2005 4:47:46 PM
Tratain follows the Elf and introduces himself to the Gnome who seems to be the talkative one in the elves party.
When they reach the Green fire Tratain says to the Gnome "Whats going, what are we cutting it close too? What is that Green fire, if I'm not mistaken it reminds me a little of the magical fires in the Giggeling Ghost."
Renik d20+14=27 Thursday March 31st, 2005 5:23:37 PM
"Good skills, my friend" murmurs Renik as Tratain's spell leads them directly to their destination. He too is a little taken aback by Harlee and Irvine's welcome. Perhaps they are in communication with the Green Man. "Well met sirs" he says to the elf and gnome as they turn away.
He follows the others into the elven village, trusting that all will be explained to them in the fullness of time. Despite the fact that he feels no sense of danger here he remains alert, looking for anything untoward or unusual about this place (Spot 27).
He gazes into the dancing green flames, and is also reminded of the fireplaces in the Giggling Ghost. He has never seen such a flame outside of that place, though. Could this be a similar transportation magic?
Feng Thursday March 31st, 2005 7:00:11 PM
Feng kicks his warhorse into gear and quickly follows the elf. This confirms his suspicion that the elf knew he was being magically observed. As Feng rode he couldn't help but eagerly wonder what was about to happen. If a force for good was going to awaken then that was indeed good news.
Song and Summons (DM Cayzle) Friday April 1st, 2005 7:25:16 AM [This is the Thursday evening DM post!]
All the elves you see in the area -- maybe a dozen? maybe two? -- all gather around the green-tinged flames of the bonfire.
Harlee the elf, seemingly the one who wrote you the note, and definitely the one who you saw in the vision, ushers you to places around the bonfire as well. The other elves defer to him. He seems very excited, almost hyperactive.
Renik and Tratain, with keen eyes and sharp wits, are reminded of the hearthfires of the Giggling Ghost.
Although there is much to see here, all of it interesting to Sarigar, the fire may be the most interesting of all. Is it drawing him to it?
Renik, ever wary, looks for anything unusual. The problem with that, though, is so much is unusual. The Tree-houses. The Fire. The small flying mammals that flit from branch to branch overhead. The piping sounds.
Feng is somewhat reassured, as the gnome, Irvine, explains what is going on. "All those with elf blood in the entire Wold are having a meeting of some kind. Their minds will travel? Or just their thoughts? I do not understand it. But do not fear. Watch the flames, and learn."
Then you hear a clear fey voice rising from the flames in song:
The sunshine of your smile will soon be here, Your golden voice will once again fill the air, Rejoice inhabitants of field and stream, The Fairy King will no longer be a dream!
The piping sound grows louder and the flames leap up.
[OOC: PCs with elf blood -- Arien and Draax -- should go to the Giggling Ghost Board to post and participate there. You two can post there and back here as well. You can talk to your friends at the same time you are posting in the Giggling Ghost.
The non-elves should read the Giggling Ghost Board but NOT post there. In character, they can see and hear events there by watching the flames of the bonfire, but they may not participate there. Please DO comment to each other about events on this board as your characters talk around the fire. - Cayzle]
Feng Friday April 1st, 2005 10:02:56 AM
Feng dismounts and stands next to his mighty steed while all of this is going on. Degg is a highly intelligent mystical creature. Feng believes that he knows something special is going on if not more. He leans down and quietly asks Irvine, "Who is this Fairy King and what does he hope to accomplish?"
Sarigar and Black Paws Friday April 1st, 2005 4:25:13 PM
The brothers gaze eventually fix on the fire and they unconsciously make their way over to the ring of people around it. They sit, mesmerized by the images of people not here, but here, or are they there but not there. As much as this should hurt their heads, it surprisingly doesn't and they continue watching and listening.
Tratain Friday April 1st, 2005 5:36:04 PM
Tratain stares into the fire and watches the elves begin to gather for thier meeting.
Arien Friday April 1st, 2005 7:12:40 PM
It has been a long time since Arien was amoung his own people. Arien drifts about the fire greeting the elves one at a time. As he talks with them he is a bit distracted, as if his mind is also somewhere else.
Draax Friday April 1st, 2005 10:20:41 PM
Draax looks around at his comrades and wonders how his mind can be in two places at the same time without feeling disoriented. At first he thinks he might be going crazy, but dismisses the thought when he looks around at the other elves. "You guys can see this right?"
The Conclave Begins (DM Cayzle) Saturday April 2nd, 2005 8:01:15 AM [This is the Friday DM Post. LOL!]
As the Hamleteers watch the green flames, and into the flames, they see even deeper, into the Giggling Ghost. What an odd place that is! It seems to exist physically in the Wold ... if you walked enough you could find it. And yet it is also a magic place, whcih can be entered in dreams. And now, with these strange events, even entered while one is still awake.
That paradox -- being two places at once -- puzzles Sarigar and disconcerts Draax, but the others take it in stride. The elves who are native to this place are focused on the flames, and when Draax talks to one, he is told to shush.
But the Hamleteers have no problem talking to each other. And the gnome, Irvine, is glad to talk too.
"Most of the time I don't worry about not being an elf," he says, "although I work and live with them. But today I'm glad you guys are here too."
Feng asks about the Fairy King, but the gnome can only plead ignorance. "That's the Sleeper, I think, and the elves are excited about waking him up. What he will do, I don't know. Maybe he'll help us fight off the evil monsters hereabouts, of which there are a great many."
Sarigar and Black Paws Saturday April 2nd, 2005 11:30:23 AM
The brothers continue looking into the flames and watching the people here, there, wherever. Again, a feeling of being left out of a discussion that apparently will have a large impact on nature hits them hard and in unison, they sigh and their statures slump a bit.
Tratain Saturday April 2nd, 2005 7:02:01 PM
Tratain moves towords the others and says quietly "I'm a little concerned, I'm not sure yet if the sleeper is good or not, or if awakening him is a good idea or not. This meeting of the elves seems to be about that and from what I can tell awakening him will cause momentus changes in the wold but it seems the elves aren't going to give anyone without elven blood a say at all in the descision. That has me concerned, I see humans and dwarves and gnomes and even a minotaur there but they are being ushered out of the inn or out of the way, Curiosity seekers one called them. That does not sit well with me, I have known many elves. I have called several friends through the years. Arien and Draax are my Sword Brothers and I would fight and die for them as well as you all on your words alone. If awakening the sleeper is going to cause such momentus changes should not all the races of the wold have a voice? That aside I have other fears, even if this sleeper turns out to be one of the most benevolent beings in the wold, awakening such good will probably awaken an evil to match it."
Tratain moves back towords the Gnome and the Elves and says louder I did not experience this dream, but from the telling it seems the elves of the Wold have recieved this dream twice before, and I assume that they met like they are doing now twice before to decide whether or not to awaken the sleeper. What happened those other two times."
Renik Sunday April 3rd, 2005 2:59:59 PM
Renik shares Tratain's misgivings. If this Sleeper is as powerful as he seems this is a truly momentous decision, and one that will effect everyone across the Wold. Though he says nothing his face darkens as he gazes at the concentrated faces of his hosts around the emerald fire and the gathering elven crowd within it. For the elves to take it upon themselves to hold such a vital discussion on behalf of the entire Wold smacks of a staggering arrogance. Who are the elves to say what is right for everyone else?
As his resentment towards the elves in general builds it occurs to him that two of his close companions are among their number. He wrestles with the complex emotions brought about by this realisation, and hopes that he is wrong about this. Perhaps the elves have merely gathered to explain events, and that they will then draw in all manner of leaders from across the Wold. But the treatment of the non-elves in the Giggling Ghost rankles severely, and a dark knot of anger begins to grow in his gut. He wants to believe the best of these elves, but in truth he cannot. Everything he sees here smacks of a de facto coup d'etat, with the rest of the Wold as hapless bystanders.
Though he is unaware of it his knuckles whiten as he grips the hilts of his shortswords. Calm yourself he thinks furiously. Wait and see what transpires.
Feng Sunday April 3rd, 2005 11:50:32 PM
"I agree completely. The evles have worshipped this god for probably centuries. I'm sure that they feel it's their right. I was thinking the same thing. What's best for the elves may not be best for the other races. Unfortunately I think that all we can do is wait and see."
Conclave 1 (DM Cayzle) Monday April 4th, 2005 7:40:38 AM
As the Hamleteers gaze into the green flames, they see that an amazing gathering of elven folks is beginning. They also see that non-elves are relegated to the balcony or asked to leave.
One elf scholar says, "It is a great day! The Dream has come as foretold in the most ancient and revered manuscripts of our kindred. He has slept from the earliest time of the Wold, and now is the time for his waking. Now is the time for all elven-kind to dream together, to work together. Nature will prosper, and that which is evil and un-natural will tremble!"
You see your own friends, Arien and Draax, waiting for the proceedings to begin. [OOC: you two can post here and there, once per day each, if you like.]
A bard sings a song that starts off a little vague and long-winded -- or mysterious and intricate -- depending on whether you dislike elf music or like it!
Around the fire, Sarigar and Renik keep their own council. Feng and Tratain discuss what they see. Tratain is eloquent in voicing his reservations, and Feng counsels wise patience.
Irvine the Gnome nods at Feng's words. "I have lived with elves for decades, and there is still much that I do not know. But I never heard any elf pray to this King. I trust the elves I know with my life. I have done so many times. I trust them still, and see no reason not to."
If you make a listen check vs DC15, then in order to hear a tiny murmur from Irvine, Please Highlight to display spoiler: {The gnome adds under his breath, "so far."}
Renik d20+14=32 Monday April 4th, 2005 9:27:32 AM
Slowing his breathing and letting himself relax the rogue sits quietly, waiting to see what the elven gathering will do. He notes the gnome's whispered comment though (Listen 32), and nods almost imperceptibly in agreement.
Benevolent as they seem, there is something about that serene elven exterior that (now he thinks back on it) he has always found a little worrisome. They are a hard people to read, and that inscrutability makes him uneasy.
The fact that he himself has, over the course of his career in espionage and adventuring, trained himself to achieve this exact same ability to reveal nothing in his expressions does not occur to Renik.
Sarigar and Black Paws Monday April 4th, 2005 10:24:41 AM
In unison, the brothers begin to scratch a spot by their right front shoulder. Sarigar then looks at his shoulder with a questioning look on his face. He then realizes that it wasn't his shoulder that was itching and that it was his brother digging a a bug of some kind. He digs through the fur on Black Paws' shoulder and a moment later, he flicks a bug into the fire.
They then settle back in and watch the flames.
Tratain d20+10=24 Monday April 4th, 2005 11:13:21 AM
Tratain nods at Irvine's words and hears his wispered comment. He thinks to himself, at least someone else is a little worried as well.
He says "I hope they know what they are doing and there are at least some who will speak about the possible dangers. If they just decide to awaken the sleeper without much discussion about consequences things could get very bad. If the dream is accurate about the sleepers intentions he's already declared war on Parnoth and whatever allies he can gather. I'm guessing the sleeper won't take kindly to the elves in Aisildur being heartseeded so there will probably be War there as well. And it wouldn't surprise me if the Army's of Marteaus raise thier banners again at Mount Bone if they feel threatened."
Draax Monday April 4th, 2005 11:39:26 AM
Draax listens to the misgiving of the others. He is not sure where he would stand if a conflict between elves and the other races were to happen. Having a foot on both sides of the line, he hopes that it does not come to him having to choose sides.
Conclave 2 (DM Cayzle) Tuesday April 5th, 2005 3:09:45 PM
The elf gathering continues, and more details emerge. Our heroes talk as they watch.
[sorry for lame post today!]
Tratain Tuesday April 5th, 2005 8:45:37 PM
Tratain continues watching the goings on in the Giggeling Ghost. Concerned about the attitudes of the elves who have spoken up so far.
Draax Tuesday April 5th, 2005 9:22:38 PM
Draax tries to follow along with what is being said at the gathering. He does not understand any of it. Draax wonders if his human half is preventing him from comprehending what is going on like he believes the other elves are doing. He becomes very concern when the words, "Magic, powered by the souls and longing of the elves" are spoken. He hopes that they were not pulled together for some mass sacrifice. He looks at his comrades to see how they are reacting to what they are seeing and hearing.
Sarigar and Black Paws Wednesday April 6th, 2005 12:17:58 AM
When the brothers see the dark skinned elf enter the ghostly images of the Giggling Ghost, a low growl begins to emanate from them both. The hackles on Black Paws neck rise up and Sarigar's fingers dig in to the soil beneath him. It almost looks as if they're ready to leap into the fire before them.
Renik Wednesday April 6th, 2005 10:09:27 AM
Watching events within the flames Renik's anger begins to ebb. These speakers are eloquent and pursuasive. There is an undeniable ring of truth to their words. The dark armies are a clear threat, both to nature herself and the civilisations that lie beyond it. Perhaps they are right...
But it is the principle which is the issue here, he reminds himself. Why should the fate of the Wold, the future of the fight against evil, be decided by the elves alone? Who elected them rulers of the Noble Races? Not Renik Dacour! Who is to say they are right? What proof have they shown that this Sleeper will restrict the growth of nature to an assault on what humanity deems evil? Who is to say that a newly awakened Nature might not consider humanity itself to be evil? Why are the humans not a part of this debate?
He scowls again, and whispers to Tratain "This is wrong! This is not a decision for elves alone!"
Feng Wednesday April 6th, 2005 6:44:52 PM
Feng continues to watch silently. His questions seem to give only more questions. Even when this elven god emerges he doubts that answers will be clear. If anything the truth will be harder to find.
Conclave 3 (DM Cayzle) Wednesday April 6th, 2005 10:12:15 PM
The debate continues in the scene unfolding in the green flames. A pair of drow voice doubts, echoing Renik's thoughts: Was waking the Sleeper a good idea? And why were elves alone heard in the debate?
The elves present stare intently into the flames, minds far away.
Irvine muses aloud, almost talking to the flames, "There is no doubt that evils need to be fought, and the Noble Races so far have not triumphed. We could use help."
Tratain Wednesday April 6th, 2005 10:35:19 PM
Tratain nods at Renik and listens to the new speakers. He says "Well it looks like these new speakers are at least starting a meaningfull discussion. I'd feel better if they invited some leaders from Plataue City or some scholars from the Star Mages guild to participate. But at least things look like they are getting better. Lets see what happens."
Sarigar and Black Paws Wednesday April 6th, 2005 11:18:54 PM
When the half-drow named Xenia, followed shortly thereafter by the drow that caused the brothers' unease speak and defend the non-elven races, they noticably calm, though they remain somewhat on edge. A slight look of confusion comes over their faces as if they don't understand how the killers of his pack would actually defend others.
Draax Thursday April 7th, 2005 1:23:31 AM
Draax continues to watch while thinking that this is getting more confusing by the minute.
Renik Thursday April 7th, 2005 8:51:51 AM
Renik has some sympathy for Sarigar's confusion. How can it be that Drow are the only ones speaking sense? He rubs a hand over his goattee, fascinated to see if the "pro" camp address any of the concerns raised.
Feng Thursday April 7th, 2005 7:06:57 PM
Hopefully one day Sarigar will come to understand that a person is not defined by his race. Thats something Feng has had to live with all his life.
"Sarigar try to think of it like this. Would you like to be defined by the actions of another or would you prefer to be your own man?"
Arien Friday April 8th, 2005 3:22:26 AM
Arien stares into the flames and struggles with the duality of what he seeing. One from where he is sitting and also from withing the Giggling Ghost itself. The strangeness of the situation causes him to be silent as he watches.
Conclave 4 (DM Cayzle) Friday April 8th, 2005 6:22:37 AM
[OOC: This is the Thursday DM Post!]
The debate continues in the flame-vision. As Tratain notes, the arguments become more reasoned. Some point out that nature has been turned or corrupted, and the Fae King will be a force for purification. Another emerging theme is anger at exclusion of non-elves.
But these arguments are swept away when the famed Valdor rises to speak! And he talks, in the end, against waking the sleeper! How many will be swayed by his words?
Irvine the gnome gasps at that. "How would you vote?" he asks the non-elves watching with him.
Feng Friday April 8th, 2005 9:59:35 AM
"I have long had faith in the divine. That faith encompases more than the belief they excist. There are things going on that no mortal can comprehend. While there are doubts to what this sleeper will accomplish I say bring him forth and let us see."
Renik Friday April 8th, 2005 2:28:48 PM
Renik shakes his head. "No, I can't take this on blind trust. More to the point, it is not even up to me to choose or not, and that is not right. The elves expect everyone else to accept that this decision is theirs alone, and for that reason alone it should be rejected! I stand with Valdor!"
He stands and calls to the Elves around him: "Reject this unilateral action! How can this path bring peace, when the very act of an Elven choice on behalf of all races is so utterly divisive?"
Tratain Friday April 8th, 2005 2:38:12 PM
Tratain says "I would wait and have more discussion. There has been very little information offered either way. It seems as though those who can tell us a good deal about the Sleeper are keeping it to themselves, or else no one really knows all that much about him. The way this is being done concernes me. The elves are a very patient people, it comes with thier long lives. This Dream happened but a day ago and some are already getting ready to attempt to wake him. The vast majority of them didn't even know he existed two days ago and now they want to rush off and awaken a being who they say has powers akin to the gods."
Tratain thinks for a moment and continues "If the this Sleeper has been slumbering for untold millenia then surely waiting a while longer to find more information would be best. Other things have me worried as well. How do we know that this sleeper has been changed or effected by the great changes in the Wold since he first slumbered. Men have risen up against the gods and been given a place in the pantheon. The gods of Testing rose and established themeselves as well. How do we know these or other events haven't damaged him in some way."
The first person I heard speak of the sleeper was a gnome, he went about the city preaching the sleeper would awaken, the Elven Druids in Plataue city wouldn't let him in the Druid quarter. It seemed they had no idea what it was at the time. The next day they had this dream and when I talked to them again they were all ecstatic about it. In a day they went from treating the gnome as a bother to embracing his vision. Another thing the Gnome said that interested me at the time. He said the sleeper was the One in Many or somesuch. I don't know what that means and it worries me know that some of the elves plan to try and awaken him."
Sarigar and Black Paws Friday April 8th, 2005 6:42:44 PM "I say we go find Mittiri. People say she's dead, but brother and I can feel her. I think she's just hiding or somethin'. People liked her, that's what the tree lady used to tell me. And she feels a lot like what people say this Sleeper is."
Conclave Ends (DM Cayzle) Saturday April 9th, 2005 3:03:56 PM
[This is -- LOL -- the Friday DM Post! Sorry!]
The magical green flames die down, and the gathering of elves comes to a close. Those elves circling the bonfire look up in response to your voices.
When Feng says, "Bring him forth," several elves smile, and one shouts, "Yes!"
But Harlee, the leader, is not so quick.
Renik's words are met with scowls, but Harlee responds with the patience of one who has seen centuries go by. "Perhaps we elves are arrogant, but the Sleeper was an elf, and only elves can wake him, so it is natural for elves to see this as an elvish dilemma. Are we proud? Well, even when non-elves spoke to condemn us, we did not silence them."
"And please remember that even if the elves are proud, we are good at heart, and our motives are pure. We fight here against evil, and if the Fae King awakes, he will help set the Wold to right."
When Tratain says he wants to know more, Harlee nods and agrees. "There is much still hidden, much we should discover."
Finally, Sarigar's words make Harlee smile.
"Yes, my friends, despite the contention, let us not forget that today is a joyful day. Harken unto the words of the Dragonstone! Valdor said,
"Let him sleep, and band with me. We can accomplish anything, if we all do it together."
"So if the Sleeper wakes, he will work to help the Wold. And if he sleeps, then Valdor Dragonstone has said that he will lead a crusade of all Noble Races for the same ends!"
"Surely this is a cause for which to fight and in which to rejoice! I brought you here to help in that cause. Will you help us?"
Sarigar and Black Paws Saturday April 9th, 2005 8:05:52 PM
As the conclave ends and the fires begin to dim, the brothers sit there and a look of pain comes over their faces. Sarigar's forehead falls into his hand and it's obvious he's got another headache. All this man-speak is far to alien for him and his simple understanding of the world.
The brothers stumble off to the edge of the encampment to sleep away their headaches. Give them the dirt under their feet, prey in their sights or its scent in their noses, trees overhead and their well and good. Make them try to comprehend much beyond the hunt and sheer survival and....ow.
Renik d20+5=14 Sunday April 10th, 2005 3:36:31 AM
The rogue considers Harlee's words, calming himself in order to make his points clearly.
"I don't deny that this Sleeper and the process of bringing him back are an elven concern. It is the implications of his return that are more wide-reaching. Any action which affects others on such a great scale should surely be put to those others before being carried out? The purity of your motives cannot be questioned, it is the manner of deciding upon this Awakening I have a problem with.
Tratain also makes valid points. We seem to be rushing headlong down a cataclysmic path based on little more than blind optimism and (with due respect) the word of a couple of old elves. It is nowhere near enough. Surely such profoundly Wold-changing events should be clearly understood by all.
How can anyone be saying "awake the Sleeper", based on the paltry evidence we have heard? Do you know what form this "restoration of balance" will take? Do you know how the Sleeper intends to "destroy evil"? What will the Sleeper consider evil? Anything contrary to nature? That could include the woodsman who fells the tree. How will a rise of nature effect the human cities? Or commerce? What might the Gods make of the Elves taking it upon themselves to change the balance of the Wold? In this Awakening and subsequent destruction of evil, who will live and who will die?
Until these questions can be answered (or at the very least have been debated by ALL who wish to have a say in their own future) this course cannot be pursued. Can you not see the truth in this?"
Renik is attempting to pusuade both the elven leader and his followers (Oratory 14).
Arien Sunday April 10th, 2005 2:12:37 PM
"Perhaps the problem Renik," Arien says, "Is that you did not feel the dream as most of us here did. I say this not to slight you but to make a point. A man trapped in a cave and having the sunlight described to him be another does not feel the light and its warmth. He only knows what the other tells him, so without knowing the truth of the matter he makes judgements about the light. You cannot dispute that things are not all well with the Wold. If they were Marcus would still be alive as would many of our friends. If the Sleeper can help us make things right, who are we to stop his awakening?"
Arien stands and turns to Harlee, "I will help you Harlee, I feel that I have little choice in the matter but were I given one I would help regardless. What would you have of us?"
Tratain Sunday April 10th, 2005 4:23:32 PM
Tratain says "What would you have us do Harlee, I'm afraid I won't support anything haveing to do with Awakening this Sleeper without more information about him. That meeting did little to alay my fears. While the elves didn't silence or throw the non-elvish speakers out of the meeting, I think only a few took them seriously and none of thier concernes were addressed. I found several of the elves insulting. One of the main speakers didn't seem concerened that the other races weren't given a voice in the descision, just what we might do because we were afraid. Another at the gathering said that "We wouldn't understand." Thats an answer you give to children, not those who are going to die for you in the War that will come. Make no mistake, there will be war, probably on the scale that will eclipse what went on during the rise of the Gods of Testing. If the other races are told this is only an elven matter, and that they get no voice at all in the descion that will change the wold on such a large scale they may not be willing to help if things go badly."
Tratain continues "I do believe that the elven race is primarily good, and so do the other races of the Wold. If we did not we wouldn't be here merly protesting not having a voice. If all the Orcs in the Wold had a shared vision showing they could raise a great or hero with godlike powers who would slay thier enemies and put them in thier rightfull place, the Combined Armies of all the goodly Races would March immedietly to war to prevent it."
"If you know of some way we can gain more information about this sleeper, that I would support. I also would like to know anything that you know about him. When the Greenman showed us the vision of how to find you you were writing something that leads me to believe you are one of a very few elves that knew anything at all about the Fae King before the vision. What was he like, how do you think he will react to the changes that have taken place? Did he have good relations with the other races of the Wold? I also do not know if you have any influence over the Elven nations as a whole Harlee but i would Urge you send representatives to the other great nations to ask thier input and try to lessen thier fears."
Draax Monday April 11th, 2005 2:06:07 AM
Draax listens to the others while trying to make up his own mind about the sleeper. "I guess I am in for now, like most of the others need more information."
Feng Monday April 11th, 2005 1:36:12 PM
As the discussion heats up Feng decides to hold his tongue. Another voice added will do nothing to help resolve the conflict. No matter how Renik voices his concerns the elves will not be persuaded. How could anybody expect them to be? They recieved a profound vision that united them as a race like never before.
"Renik you might as well save your breath. They will not be persuaded from their present course. I know if I recieved a message like they did I could not be. Valdor may carry much weight behind his words but somehow I don't think they really care."
Prophecy and News (DM Cayzle) Monday April 11th, 2005 11:08:43 PM
Sarigar struggles with the vision of debate. But he decides he needs a chance to digest it all.
Renik tries to convince the elves that all noble races of the Wold should be consulted in the decision to rouse the Sleeper.
But Arien feels the conviction that came with the vision of an Elf Champion who will reverse the defeats that are looming.
Tratain needs to know more. He too is concerned that other races were not consulted. But a part of him seems to long to help the elves.
Draax also wants to know more.
Feng feels that the elves have already decided.
...
In fact, maybe the decision has not been set. Harlee seems sympathetic. He agrees that there is more to learn.
"I have made a study of this. I have read ancient tomes of prophecy. They say the Fae King will defeat the enemies of nature. They say that when things turn dark, when the three sky-signs meet, then the King can save us."
"But the tales also tell of the Lord of the Pixies. Maybe he was a friend of the King, maybe a foe. The stories are unclear. Maybe both. But I think that if you found the Lord of the Pixies, he could tell you more."
"I can tell you how to find him. Interested?"
Just then, an elf runs up, with a small dragonet on his arm. He speaks to Harlee in elvish.
Harlee turns to you all. Blood has drained from his face. He pauses to collect himself, and then repeats the news.
"The Dread is on the rise. An army is forming. But that is not the worst of it!"
"Parnoth Faebane has enslaved every elf in his realm! He is shackling them all. He has finally done it. Alas!"
Tears stream down the elf's face.
Renik Tuesday April 12th, 2005 8:42:53 AM
"It seems the repercussions are already beginning. I like this not, but we seem to have little choice at this stage. Let us find this Lord of Pixies you speak of and gain more knowledge of what is to come."
The rogue shakes his head angrily, frustrated that the elves seem intent upon continuing with the awakening regardless of the concerns of the other races. Still, all they can do at this stage is gather as much information as possible in order to better prepare for what is to come.
Feng Tuesday April 12th, 2005 9:50:47 AM
"While the nature of the Fae King is being debated we can concentrate on the here and now. An entire kingdom has been enslaved. I cannot stand idly by while such an act takes place." Feng says withthe fanatical determination that few can muster.
Tratain Tuesday April 12th, 2005 10:55:32 AM
Tratain says "We should hurry and go find the Lord of the Pixies quickly and learn what we can. Unfortunatly Feng, I believe that Freeing the Emerald Kingdom from Parnoth is out of our league. It will take a great crusaide to drive that monster out, and we may best help that cause by finding out what we can about the Fae King and reporting it to our leaders before the summoning so that maybe they can be persuaded to help in that cause."
"Where are the dread attacking? And in what numbers do you know? Do you think that the forces in that area will be able to stop them or would our time better be served there?"
Sarigar and Black Paws Tuesday April 12th, 2005 3:15:33 PM
The brothers moan softly from the pain in their heads as they roll over and continue sleeping. "ZZZZ ZZZz ZZzz Zzzz zzzz"
Arien Tuesday April 12th, 2005 7:34:10 PM
"I wonder now if the rising of the sleeper isn't assured. Parnoth's death was shown in this dream and with his rash enslavement of our kin many elves will desire his death and awaken the Sleeper with anger in their hearts. I say we find this Lord of Pixies, find out what we can and hopefully awaken the Sleeper before those filled with hate do. For I believe if he is awakened under such a circumstance the events that follow would be dire ones indeed."
Draax Tuesday April 12th, 2005 7:52:56 PM
Draax almost jumps up to agrees to go after the Lord of the Pixies. All the arguing was starting to get on his nerves. Waiting around while others try to make up their minds have never been something he was good at. "Yes, lets go after the Pixie Lord, standing around waiting for things to happen is starting to get to me."
The Path to the Pixie Lord (DM Cayzle) Wednesday April 13th, 2005 7:33:01 AM
[OOC: It's Wednesday, but this is the Tuesday DM Post!]
While Harlee turns away for a moment to compose himself, you talk about what to do. Although the opinions on the elvish question range from regret and hesitation, from Renik, to commitment, from Feng, all agree that seeking out this Lord of the Pixies is not a bad idea.
Sarigar and Black Paws open their eyes simultaneously as the scent of a canine creature hits their noses. Maybe it comes from that halfling that just entered the camp?
Tratain poses his question, and Irvine the Gnome talks first to an elf, then has an answer. "A large force of dread soldiers has already left the Crimson Fort, located in the deadland valleys at the northern border of the Culverwood. With Parnoth making his move in the south of the forest, and the Dread in the north, we can only assume collusion. Certainly, events are moving fast."
Harlee returns and seems very relieved that you are willing to agree to his proposition. "Thank you for agreeing to help, if only to find out more. I would like to send two of my people with you."
"Monthor is a doughty fighter who will offer you substantial firepower." He indicates a dwarf, and you see that he means "firepower" literally, since some of the dwarf's gear sems to be on fire.
"Jasper will guide you, since he is well acquainted with the forest." He motions to a halfling.
[OOC: These are two new party members. Please welcome them. Scott, Yves, feel free to start posting now.]
Harlee offers more information about the Pixie Lord. "Of old he dwelt in a lake about three days travel from here, attended by his nyads and other waterfae. I think you should start there."
DM Cayzle Wednesday April 13th, 2005 7:49:29 AM OOC: EVERYONE, PLEASE READ JERRY'S POST ON LnB FROM YESTERDAY REGARDING THE LOSS OF LYNN BECK, A WOLDIAN AND A WONDERFUL PERSON. JASPER Wednesday April 13th, 2005 3:16:01 PM
A scruffy halfling approaches, hat in hand, and brightens his scarred face with a smile. "So you're the 'amleteers wots leadin' the investigatin'? Jasper's me name, an' I 'ave the distinct pleasure of escortin' you." He wheezes a dry chuckle. "Tisn't everyday the druds go lookin' beyond their ken. Oim thinkin' they're either very impressed, or we're very expendable." Jasper takes an uncomfortable pause, then leans in conspiratorily. "Oim countin' on th' former."
Sarigar and Black Paws Wednesday April 13th, 2005 3:35:27 PM
The brothers, in uinson, roll up to their feet and take a defensive crouching stance when the new scent enters the area. Looking around, they spot the halfling just before he begins speaking. Seeing such a tiny intruder, they noticably relax. Although they have met many a fierce yet diminutive opponent, the smell the get from him puts them at ease.
Renik Wednesday April 13th, 2005 4:20:42 PM
Shaking off his misgivings the dapper rogue extends a hand to the newcomers. "You'd be welcome to join us. Pleasure to meet you Jasper, Monthor. The name's Renik Dacour."
He bends down close to Jasper's ear and in a says in an equally conspiratorial manner "Much as I'd love to agree with you, if past experience is anything to go by I'm afraid it's far more likely the latter."
He looks about at his companions. "Are we ready to leave now? Anyone need anything before we leave, or shall Jasper guide us now?"
As they get themselves ready he chats with the two newcomers. "So Monthor, I'm guessing you're a battler, a weapon master. Is that right? And you , Jasper, what are your skills? Are you skilled in the magical arts perhaps?"
(OOC: Welcome to the game folks. I'd be grateful if you could send me your Adventurer's Repose entries as soon as possible. My email is carl_white@zen.co.uk. Thanks!)
Tratain Wednesday April 13th, 2005 5:26:59 PM
Tratain says "Greetings Monthor and Jasper, My name is Tratain. Pleased to meet you."
He continues "I'm ready to head out now, we should get started quickly, alot is happening."
Monthor Wednesday April 13th, 2005 6:08:15 PM
Monthor's eyes grow wide at Renick's comments. The armored dwarf bends over for a second and lets out the most feasome sounding belly laugh heard in these parts in many years. After a few seconds of this, Monthor whipes a few tears from his eye before moving up to Renick.
" No one has ever called me a 'master' of anything 'friend'. I be a brawler plain and simple. I use my fists when me have the chance to and me axe when I need to. Now, me pappy.. THERE is a weapon master."
Monthor turns and takes a few steps away from Renick.
" Bah! Enough chatting. Me 'little buddy' and I have been with the 'tree lovers' for to long without heads to crack. Let's get moving."
{ooc - Hello all. Looking forward to the game and playing with you all. }
Feng Wednesday April 13th, 2005 8:53:49 PM
One of the figures before then is a massive half orc both handsome and noble. His breastplate armor is immaculately polished as is the double axe on his back. His silence is not meant to be insulting for the sleeper occupies much of his thoughts.
Draax Thursday April 14th, 2005 5:34:44 AM
As he looks at the newcoming the half-elf gives greeting to both. "Welcome Monthor and you too Jasper. My friends call me Draax."
Turning back to Harlee, Draax says, "I take it that this is part of the journey to an exotic/dangerous place and noble cause that the letter mentioned, but it also mentioned a voyage. Has the current event turned us away for the original plan or is this just an extension of it."
Walk in the Woods (DM Cayzle) Thursday April 14th, 2005 8:07:20 AM
[OOC: LOL! This is the Wednesday post! I'm not ready for it to be Thursday yet!]
Harlee replies to Draax, "You are right -- the original reason I sent for you is not to visit the Lord of Pixies. Events have moved fast, and I am guessing the best course, like most people. But I know that you are of noble heart, so I hope you will trust my intuitions."
"And my intuition now is that all other missions must now take a lower place to the Question of the Sleeper."
Harlee tells Jasper where the Lake of the Pixie Lord can be found. Jasper has not been there before, but he knows this forest in general, and should have no problem leading the way.
[OOC: Thanks, Feng, for the PC description. How about the same from everybody? Including Black Paws!]
Unless there is reason to delay, Harlee suggests making use of the light left in the day.
As you head off into the thick woods, please describe what you do, how you walk, and so on.
Jasper and Monthor, Please Highlight to display spoiler: {You know this forest well. There are many very large herbivores (like 12-foor-tall giant elk) and very large predators (like dire sabre tooth tigers). So you know to be careful. Of course, for many natural beast, Jasper's way with animals often avoids conflict. But against the weirder monsters, especially the malign ones, the only answer is the blade or the foot -- to run away with!}
Sarigar and Black Paws d20+31=48 d20+17=36 d20+26=41 d20+17=23 Thursday April 14th, 2005 12:22:56 PM
The brothers keep a close eye on the newcomers. It's obvious that Sarigar, the sturdily built human wild man, holds some reservations. As a man who is probably more wolf in mindset, new pack members are not just accepted, they prove themselves.
His brother, the nearly horse-sized, silver coated timberwolf with jet black paws also watches the newcomers warily.
Together, the brothers have a look about them as if they're having a conversation with each other, but they make no sounds nor words. As the party begins to move out, the brothers slip into the underbrush and disappear (Hide 48/36, Move Silently 41/23). The others, by now, are used to them doing this. The newcomers, however, have the distinct feeling that they are being stalked.
The brothers are close, you can feel it, but where?
Monthor Thursday April 14th, 2005 1:30:50 PM
Monthor kneels down and taps the handle of his war axe on the ground. Instantly, the flames engulfing the axe head dies out. The dwarf slings the axe over his back, on the side of his havesack and unslings his cross bow. With a giant 'thud' on the chest plate of his 1/2 plate mail, the burley Monthor bellows.
" PACK UP CREW!!! Time to heads out! Me have point. Keep it quiet during the walk. They be some mighty big beasties around these parts that would just love to sink their teeth in us. Not that me would let them of course..."
Monthor walks past the rest of the group to take up his spot at the head of the party. Passing close to Feng, Monthor stops and looks the 1/2 orc up and down as if taking the measure of the large male. Unexpectingly, the mighty warrior leans his head forwards and takes in a deep breath through his ample nose.
" My ye sur smell perty for an orc me son. "
Without waiting for a response, Monthor pulls his head back, snorts with a grin and continues on his way.
Renik d20+25=38 d20+20=36 Thursday April 14th, 2005 3:39:40 PM
Renik smiles as Monthor gets going. Looks like this felow is going to be entertaining. "A brawler eh? I'll admit to preferring a bit of finesse myself, but whatever gets the job done!"
He notes the lupine brothers' guarded reaction as they vanish into the undergrowth, then turns back to the two newcomers as they head out. "If we see combat take your lead from me. I'll take up the rear. Feng, if you could lead the center group again please."
The slender rogue moves to the rear of the group and begins to adapt once more to the rythms of the forest. His movements become fluid and silent, as he glides through the shadows (Hide 38, Move Silent 36). To those that choose to observe him he is good-looking in an angular sort of way. He gives the impression of being alert and quick-witted. He is pale skinned and clear eyed, and his hair is shoulder length, brown, and well cared for. A fastidiously trimmed goattee adorns his chin. He wears an unusual pair of totally black circular lenses within frames over his eyes, similar to the eyeglasses worn by some wizards, but with a great deal more style.
He wears muted green and tan trousers (wait, did those trousers just change colour? Surely they were dark grey a moment ago?), black calf length boots, a dark grey shirt and a black doublet.
His armour is hidden beneath his outer clothing, a fine mithril chain of astonishing lightness and flexibility. Over this he is wrapped in a long grey cloak, with his face now hidden from view beneath a deep cowl. The eye seems to slide off this cloak, as if it were unwilling to be seen.
Over each shoulder is sheathed one of a matching pair of magical short swords. He draws these as he strides silently through the woodland undergrowth. An ornate silver knife is sheathed on his chest, along with a buckler on his left arm. This is black, expertly made, and studded.
The overall impression is of a man who appreciates fine tailoring and personal grooming.
Jasper Thursday April 14th, 2005 4:37:59 PM
[OOC: Thanks for the welcome all, and I'm glad to be a part of such a long and storied campaign. Now lets see what kind of trouble we can get into...]
Jasper looks like he was taken apart and put together all wrong. His lumpy, calloused face has a strange, untextured sheen. His facial expressions are distorted, as if viewed through a funhouse mirror. His gait appears crooked, although he seems to have found some comfortable balance within it. He carries a quarterstaff strapped across his back, and dresses in forest greens and browns. His clothes are disheveled, and he seems to have permanent dirt smudges on his face.
Jasper watches Hamleteers disappear into the foliage and sighs. "You'll do as you would, oi s'pose. But if oi can't sees ya, oi can't helps ya."
He leads the group on dogback, riding a russet hound he calls "Balthazar". Occasionally he dismounts to test the ground ahead, and points out poisonous flora and fauna to avoid, and at one point asks the group to step carefully around a marching line of ants. He whistles all the while, but even that sounds more like a breeze through the canopy than any identifiable song. Twice, sniffing the air, he shushes the group and directs them to make a wide berth around some nameless rustling in the underbrush. He points to a dead branch sticking out of the underbrush well above everyone's head. Spreading his right hand wide open, he touches his thumb to his temple and, pointing with his other hand at his waggling fingers, whispers, "Elk!" He clears a reverent path around them.
In this manner he leads the group through the forest as the day wears on and the dappled sunlight fades.
Tratain Thursday April 14th, 2005 5:20:49 PM
Tratain walks near the center of the group as they travel to see the Lord of the Pixies. He stands just under 6 feet tall, with short blonde hair. You can clearly see Armor underneath the plain robes he wears. A shield is strapped to his back but readily accessable when needed. He wears a Hammer shapped necklace around his neck, and a masterfully crafted Adamantite Warhammer hangs from his belt.
Draax Thursday April 14th, 2005 11:19:01 PM
Although he learned to trust Sarigar and Black Paws to alert the group of any signs of trouble Draax still stays alert as they travel to their destination.
Draax looks like an average teenage human on the verge of manhood. His slender built, graceful movements, and pointed ears are the only visual evidence of his elven heritage. The half-elven warrior wears a very fine crafted set of chain mail armor with a exquisite bow over his left shoulder and an expensive sword on his right hip. He uses a black cloak to cover the shield he carries across his back.
Forest Travel (DM Cayzle) d4=4 d100=16 [secret DM rolls] Friday April 15th, 2005 7:26:03 AM
[Thursday Post]
Under the halfling guide's tutelage, you become acquainted with this forest. It is certainly different from any other you have travelled through. Everything seems grown on a larger scale. Creatures are big, like that elk, trees are tall, and even the bugs are super-sized.
Night falls without incident.
[OOC: We have three days of travel walking at a speed of 20 (I think that's your party speed; correst me if I am wrong). Please offer your plans for that period, including setting up camp, watches, spells prepped, etc. Also, think about what you'll do once you get to the lake.]
Feng Friday April 15th, 2005 10:20:37 AM
Feng stays quiet during the trip, leisurely riding his massive warhorse. He doesn't know what to make of their new dwarven companions but he'll figure it out in the days to come. Feng sees this as another test to his patience, understanding, and discipline. Generally dwarves have been the hardest for him to deal with because all they see is his orc half and the standard he has to set as a paladin doesn't often mesh with boisterious dwarven celebrations.
Sarigar and Black Paws Friday April 15th, 2005 10:38:55 AM
The brothers keep their quiet vigil of the party from hiding. They parallel the party's movements staying just a bit ahead but behind the halfling.
During camps, they take to their regular napping schedule of sleeping, one always being awake, the other sleeping for a bit. Overall, they should sleep about as long as anyone else in the party. They also stay on the fringe of the camp, just outside the firelight so they may better stay hidden and watchful of the surroundings.
They keep an eye on Jasper and Monthor and speak only when necessary. Their watchfulness is born out of both wariness and curiosity. The last "little person" that travelled with the pack turned purple and was later squished by giants. They wonder if either of these will turn colors.
Upon reaching the lake, unless otherwise warned not to, the brothers will probably dive in and swim around for a bit to cool off and clean off. This area is practically a dream home for them. BIG food to hunt and just as big predators to defend against. Survival of the fittest at its finest.
Prepared Spells: Longstrider x2
Monthor Friday April 15th, 2005 12:38:02 PM
Monthor the mighty but abraisive dwarf will keep the lead of the column for the remainder of the trip (his top speed is 20). He'll suggest that camp be made one hour before darkness and that camp be broken one hour before light. With his darkvision, he'll volunteer for one of the late night watches. If needed, he'll use the flames from his axe to start the camp fire or help provide light for the party. Once the party is in camp, he blesses them with numerous stories from his days as a bouncer and battles along side his "pappy". At the lake, Monthor will NOT take a bath. To him, that would be a fate worst then having to do without beer. He will however keep watch if any of the others decide to. Oh, and of course he will try to antagonize Feng any chance he gets. Nothing to bad, just the odd verbal jab here and there. Can't let a 1/2 orc get to comfortable around him now can he?
Arien Friday April 15th, 2005 12:49:19 PM
Arien walks in the center of the group along side of Tratain. Arien is dressed in deep greens and browns to help blend in with the surroundings. The elven mage doesn't wear the robes common of his proffesion but instead wears a sturdy outfit with numerous pouches on his belt that carry his spell components. He also carries both a bow and a rapier neither of which are often used.
0 Level: Detect Magic x2, Light, Read Magic x2 1st Level: Burning Hands, Magic Missile x5, Protection from Evil 2nd Level: Rope Trick, Scorching Ray x4, Extended Shield, Extended Mage Armor 3rd Level: Displacement x2, Dispel Magic, Fly, Lightning Bolt x2 4th Level: Dimension Door x2, Evard's Black Tentacles, Ice Storm, Stone Skin 5th Level: Summon Monster V x2, Cone of Cold, Wall of Force 6th Level: Chain Lightning x2, Disintegrate
Tratain Friday April 15th, 2005 1:33:23 PM
Tratain takes in the sites of the Forest as they walk towords the Lake. Every mourning after his prayers using his Rod of Lesser Extend he casts Magic Vestment on his Shield, and Delay poison on Renik and Arien. (24 Hour Duration on those spells)
He says "Monthor and Jasper, have either of you had any dealings with this Lord of the Pixies before? I'm just wondering what to expect, hopefully he will be willing to aid us, but who knows what he'll ask in return, if he even will help at all."
Renik Friday April 15th, 2005 4:31:39 PM
During the days spent travelling Renik remains silent, shadowing the party and checking regularly to ensure they are not being followed. It is only when the party make camp at night that he opens up a little, warming to the garrulous dwarf as he tells he his tales. It is not long before he is swapping tales of battles fought, bottles quaffed and wenches won. It is clear the rogue considers himself something of a raconteur. He notes with wry amusement the gentle ribbing the dwarf gives Feng, but makes no comment.
Renik also chats to Jasper. "My father was a woodsman, he used to talk as you do of the forest. So, what of your history, friend Jasper? You have the look of a fellow who has lived through some interesting times. Do you have any tales of your own past with which to regail us? Have you lived all your life in these parts, or are you as new to the area as we are ourselves?"
Renik will suggest that watches are split over three periods, with two men on watch at any one time. He asks if Feng will take two watches a night, as his ring of sustenance means he requires less sleep than the others. The remaining watches he splits between himself, Monthor, Jasper, Sarigar and Blackpaws and Draax. He wants the spellcasters well rested. (OOC: Am I right in assuming Jaspar is a non-spellcaster?)
As they draw close to the lake Renik grows more cautious. He catches up with Jasper and asks "So what should we expect here? Do you know how we are to find the Lord of Pixies? Are there dangers in or around the lake we should be aware of?"
He will counsel caution to Sarigar unless Jasper gives the all-clear.
Jasper d20+14=27 d20+22=33 d20+16=29 Friday April 15th, 2005 6:57:54 PM
Jasper will spend the days intent upon his job. He shares information on the general hazards of the forest to whomever is interested, but leaves the tactical decisions to the others. These are, after all, The Hamleteers.
At night he listens to the stories, nodding enthusiastically at those he's already heard from Monthor, and absorbing the ones he's unfamiliar with. He'll help prepare meals, adding fresh local seasoning when available and filling in whatever duties need tending.
Of his past he says, "Oi grew up one'a the Hillfolk of Windbourne Hills, farmin' mold, as me kin hail from a long line'a mold merchants. Most folks'd underestimate your molds, but they's sly 'n insidious plants, they are. Mold covered over me life there, an' made me wot Oi am today." Jasper pulls his crooked, lumpy form into a semblance of straightness, then slumps back into his tale. "Oi'll not be goin' back there." He sighs, and sifts soil through his fingers.
"Oi'm not one'ta dwell inna past. As for th' future, Oi know little of this Pixie Lord. Oi've not traveled to this lake, tho' Oi know *of* it. Goin' by the tales of me youth, if he's fey, an' a lord, he's prolly tempramental. Respect'll be important, if we want 'is help."
Though Jasper is a spellcaster (albiet a minor one, due to his ranger levels only) he will take whatever watch needs filling. On the last day of travel he'll spend less time mounted and more time searching for tracks (Survival 27), and if he finds tracks for anything dangerous or suspicious he'll quietly warn those in view, then blend into the woods himself (Hide 33/Move Silently 29). He'll come out of hiding when they get to the lake though, take off his cap and approach the site respectfully.
Draax Saturday April 16th, 2005 1:41:58 AM
Draax listens to the others as they travel. He remains silent for most of the journey trying to get a feel for their new comrades.
While camping he listens to stories and smiles at the familiarity of the feeling he gets from sitting need a fire listening to tales of adventure.
Since Draax also wears a ring that requires less sleep he will join Feng in taking the prolonged watches.
Chasm (DM Cayzle) Saturday April 16th, 2005 6:00:18 PM
[Ha! This is the Friday DM post! Yes, I am lost in space and time.]
In traveling, you see megafauna -- huge 12-foot-tall elk, giant beehives, and more. Black Paws finds a pile of feline scat, suggesting creatures double the size of tigers and lions you've heard of.
In late afternoon of the second day, the party reaches a wide rivulet (100 feet across) at the bottom of a canyon (500 feet across, 50 to 150 feet deep).
If Jasper did not know about it, you might have just walked into it, since the forest is dense indeed. He knows a place that would be easier to cross, but that would delay you a day. Cross or go around?
The biggest danger, though, is that predators find this to be a good hunting ground.
Tratain Sunday April 17th, 2005 2:17:17 PM
Tratain looks at the canyon and says "Going around isn't that much of a delay but it should be easy for us to get across. Renik should have no problem getting himself across with his boots, anyone else able to cross unassisted?"
When Monthor(taking Liberty with the e-mail coversation to speed things along) speaks up Tratain nods and says "Ok, it looks like Renik and Monthor can fly themselves across, Arien can Dimension Door Half of us across, Fly back and then Take the Other Half of us across. I'd suggest Taking Myself Sarigar and Black Paws across. Then Feng, Jasper and his Companion, and Draax on the second Trip."
Sarigar and Black Paws Sunday April 17th, 2005 4:59:28 PM
Sarigar curiously looks down into the chasm, then picks up a stone and tosses it down. He looks at his brother who is also looking over the edge and whimpering. At first you might think fear, but as you listen, it almost sounds like excitement.
"Sorry brother. If you had goat feet, I'd say we climb down and back up."
He looks at the others as they discuss their options. On several of the suggestions, he teasingly measures Black Paws with his arms in suggestion that he might be too big or he puts his arms under his belly and pretends to try lifting him, grunting and groaning, pointing out that he's a heavy beastie.
"Walk around or finger twiddle across. Don't matter to us much. But we ain't climbin' or jumping.
Renik d20+14=20 d20+14=31 Sunday April 17th, 2005 7:01:20 PM
"Monthor, let's you and I fly across, check evetything is safe, and then the others can join us with the aid of spells."
He activates his boots, twirls both shortswords, and floats gently across the chasm, keeping an eye out for trouble (Spot 20, Listen 31).
Monthor d20=6 d20=18 Sunday April 17th, 2005 9:11:40 PM
Monthor agrees with Renick's suggestion. He clicks his heels together and little wings sprout from his boot. Clutching his cross bow, the dwarf takes off and crosses the chasm, looking (spot 6 ) and listening ( 18) for trouble. If nothing is visible, he'll land and set up a defensive position, waiting for the others to arrive.
Jasper d20+14=21 Monday April 18th, 2005 12:05:16 AM
Jasper agrees that we should magick across the chasm. "Oi'm not too keen on spellwalkin'. But if we can clip a day's travel standin' between us an' this Pixie Lord... oi'm all for that!"
When he gets to the other side Jasper will check for tracks (survival 21) to see what's been through the area, and will adjust our course to avoid any obvious threats. Then its back to the original gameplan for him, until we arrive.
Draax Monday April 18th, 2005 1:07:43 AM
Draax agrees with the plan of going across instead of taking the time to go around. He stands on guard waiting for his turn to cross.
Feng Monday April 18th, 2005 12:38:58 PM
Because of the difficult terrain and the fact that magic is used to move across it Feng dismisses his warhorse back to the higher plane. It's one less creature magic has to transport and Feng can walk for the rest of the day.
"It does seem that even the land itself does not want us to complete our journey." Feng comments.
Arien Monday April 18th, 2005 3:16:18 PM
Arien agrees and follows the plan, taking over half the party the first time, then flying back and dimension dooring back once more.
Across the Chasm (DM Cayzle) Monday April 18th, 2005 8:32:44 PM
Sarigar and Black Paws ache to explore. They peer over the edge of the chasm. If either of the Brothers can make a spot check vs DC25, then Please Highlight to display spoiler: {You see something poking out of the river, below.}
Two efficient Dimension Doors and some Winged-Booting later, the Hamleteers find themselves on the far side of the chasm. Feng lightens the load by sending his mount away for the rest of the day.
[If I understand correctly, Arien dim doored across with friends, flew back with either a Fly spell or borrowed boots, and then Dim Doored the rest across. Thus, only Renik, Monthor, and Arien actually had the chance to look down into the chasm.]
Arien, Monthor, and Renik, please make Spot checks. If you beat a DC10, then Please Highlight to display spoiler: {You see in the river below a wreck, as of a boat.}
If you three also beat, with the same roll, a 15, then Please Highlight to display spoiler: {You see an aquatic beast, a huge one, or at least, you see tentacles waving out of the wreckage.}
Monthor, if you make the DC10 Spot check, then if you can also make an Int or Knowledge(local) check vs DC12, then Please Highlight to display spoiler: {You recall rumors of an ill-fated expedition to map this river about six months ago.}
Jasper, if Arien, Renik, or Monthor mention anything odd about this river to you, then you too can try to make an Int or Knowledge(local) check vs DC12, and Please Highlight to display spoiler: {You recall rumors of an ill-fated expedition to map this river about six months ago.}
On the other side, it seems peaceful enough to Jasper. It seems like big game stay well away from the edge. That might make it a safe spot to camp ... seeing as other creatures avoid it. Or there might be a really GOOD reason they avoid it! :-)
Draax keeps a sharp eye open but sees no danger. Feng is still suspicious, though.
It is late in the afternoon.
Monthor d20-2=18 d20=8 Monday April 18th, 2005 9:01:54 PM
Monthor looks down (spot 18, Int 8) as he flies across the chasm. Once everyone is across, Monthor tells them what he saw.
" Me tell ye lads, there was this smashed up boat at the bottom of the chasm. Some big odd water beasty with tentacles is still there playing with the boat. I'd love to have a look at the wresk if we have the time. It shouldn't take much to convince the beasty to leave it's toy alone. "
Sarigar and Black Paws d20+16=25 d20+16=20 d20+20=30 Monday April 18th, 2005 10:16:05 PM
Due to his size, Black Paws does not approach the edge of the chasm quite as closely as his brother. Sarigar spots something in the water below, but can't quite make it out (Spot 25), but his brother's cantage point prevents him from seeing it (Spot 20).
"Yep, there's somethin' down there. Looks tiny from here. But the dragons I've seen looked small from how far away I've seen em."
Aching to look around, the brothers allow themselves to drift a little from the party, but stay within about 100ft. They taste some of the local flora and some of the smaller insects (Survival 30). The sights, smells, and sounds are intoxicating, almost drawing them in. The longer they stay, the more they feel they are home.
Jasper d20+1=14 Tuesday April 19th, 2005 12:51:45 AM
Jasper takes off his hat and scratches his head. "Oi recollect somethin' 'bout a mappin' expedition. If I'm remembrin' right, that was six months ago. Oi'm not sure there'd be much to salvage of it, by now."
Jasper squats down in the dirt. "This'd be a good 'nuff spot for th' night. Wot d' you say we make camp 'ere? Any objections?"
Renik d20+14=22 Tuesday April 19th, 2005 5:49:52 AM
Renik peers into the gloom at the chasm floor. He too sees some sort of tentacled horror, and is caught in two minds. They have a mission to accomplish, but if they were to camp here anyway... His natural curiosity and hunger for adventure are strong, but prudence, for a change, wins out.
"Unless anyone strongly objects I say this will do as a camp. But I'm disinclined to head down to the boat. We have no strong reason to do so that I can think of, and I'm not sure we have enough spells to get us all down there and back. I'm open to pursuasion on this though; if anyone can give me a valid how and why I'd be more than willing to forcefeed that slimy critter its own tentacles.
As for watches tonight, I'd like that Elven Sight spell cast on anyone without enhanced vision, or at least as many of us as possible."
Feng Tuesday April 19th, 2005 10:14:57 AM
"As long as that creature playing with the boat isn't deadlier than it seems and can't reach up here then we should be alright. Though be careful because if something goes wrong down there there is no help." Feng advises and begins to set camp.
Arien d20+9=22 Tuesday April 19th, 2005 4:48:13 PM
Arien spies both the boat and the beast as he flies above the valley. Seeing the size of the creature he is definetly glad they didn't cross normally. When camp is decided Arien finds a spot and starts to unpack his camping gear.
Tratain d20+10=12 Tuesday April 19th, 2005 8:14:01 PM
Tratain Looks over the edge attempting to spot(12) an easy way down to the wreck. He says Anyone see an easy way down there? If not I suggest we either leave it be or check it out on our way back
Camping (DM Cayzle) Tuesday April 19th, 2005 9:09:03 PM
The party passes the night on the far side of the chasm, and only Monthor seems enthusiastic about checking out the wreck. Well, Renik would like to, and Sarigar is as curious as ever, but Renik urges caution. So does Feng.
Jasper does not seem to think it would be worth it. Arien seems happy to steer clear. Tratain, ever wise, suggests taking a look on the way back.
[Carl, I'm pretty sure the Elf Sight spell is personal (you can only cast it on yourself). Cayzle]
The night passes, and with the dawn, you see three huge flocks of birds flying high overhead. There are so many, and they are so big, that parts of the sky are darkened and they cast vast shadows on the forest. If you make a Know(Nature) check vs DC15, then Please Highlight to display spoiler: {You recognize the birds as huge swans. "Dire swans" essentially, but you never heard of swans this big before.}
The lowest flies perhaps 1,000 feet overhead.
Jasper, make a Survival check. If you beat DC12, then Please Highlight to display spoiler: {You realize the birds are flying toward the Lake of the Pixie Lord.}
As you break camp, do you investigate the chasm, the birds, or continue on? Or something else!
Renik Wednesday April 20th, 2005 7:56:32 AM
The city-dwelling rogue notes the flocks overhead, but pays them little heed. He continues to focus on their goal, wondering just what manner of creature this Lord will turn out to be, and what information he might hold.
Monthor Wednesday April 20th, 2005 10:53:12 AM
Not satisfied with the idea of just leaving,Monthor proposes a plan.
" Look now me sons. Me not liking the idea of leaving a wreck behind without at least having a look at it. Me could at least fly down and take a closer look. If the beasty decides to make trouble, me can send it a snootfull of flaming crossbow bolts. Me boots, a present from me mammy don't ye know, gives me three 5 minute flights a day. That should give me plenty of time to recon down and snatch anything of interest. If one of ye can come with me, me could keep the beasty at bay while ye do a quick search. "
Monthor raises his voice.
" Come on now lads! Ye only live once. Who's with me!?!"
Sarigar and Black Paws d20+16=30 d20+14=30 Wednesday April 20th, 2005 12:05:19 PM
With their keen and ever-watchful eyes, the brothers pick out the birds flying above. In typical fashion, the thought that comes to Sarigar's mind, comes rambling out his mouth..."MMmm, swans...tastes like duck." Promptly after he finishes his statement, everyone within a few feet of them hears the brother's stomachs grumble.
"Those're really big. Bet they'd fill us up good, huh brother? They look kind mean too, not like back at that lake near where all the cranky people live. Those are pretty swans." Black Paws nods at his brother in agreement and licks his chops like he's just eaten something tasty.
Gear packed and ready, the brothers are half a step out of camp before the others have even decided what's next. Suddenly, they stop as it dawns on them that...they have no idea where they're going.
Tratain Wednesday April 20th, 2005 5:16:52 PM
Tratain listens to Monthor's suggestion and thinks for a moment. He says "It would be best if we investigated the wreck on our way back, then I can memorize a spell that will allow us to breath water. That thing down there looked pretty big, I don't like the Idea of sending just one or two people down there alone with no way for the rest of us to get down there. What if it grabs you and Dives under the water, it looks big so its probably pretty strong as well, and dwarves aren't known for thier greatness in swimming...."
"Lets investigate on the way back so we can look into it Properly and be prepared. That way instead of trying to run in there and stuff our pockets and run away, we can go down there, chase off or slay the beast guarding it and take our time."
He concludes "The Lord of the Pixie's is our primary concern right now, we shouldn't get distracted until after we've gathered what information we can."
Draax Wednesday April 20th, 2005 9:06:16 PM
Draax is a little curious after listening to Monthor but Tratain's statement is true the Lord of the Pixie is their primary concern at the moment.
"Although I am curious I will have to agree with Tratain on this one. Lets not get too distracted from our reason for being here."
Listening to Sarigar, Draax wonders if the wolf brothers could eat one of the large swans by themselves.
Jasper Wednesday April 20th, 2005 11:46:09 PM
Jasper looks at Monthor. "Oi'd be inclined to agree wit' Tratain, Month. If we 'ad a sense on when this Awakening was goin' down, then we could plan ahead. But oi don' know when its happenin'. Oi'd rather get to this Pixie Lord. 'Sides, yer flamin' weapons just gonna boil in th' water, ey?"
He'll start laying down the course to the lake should the group decide to go on.
