First steps [DM Post] Friday April 22nd, 2005 10:36:07 AM
Svanhvít smiles as Bohdi hurries to take possession of the book. "There are more wonders of knowledge in this village then you could hope to dream Bohdi Nackle, formerly of Zaran City. One simply must open one's mind. A gift of Adult status awaits each of you in your tents."
As the group moves to leave, Svanhvít touches Frigg'Isa on the cheek. "My child I need a word with you alone. It will not take long."
The companions of the trial of adulthood return to restock supplies for a 5 day journey and take some rest for the early start.
Aiden is welcomed again by the massive barrel chested barbarian upon returning to his tent. He looks towards the pup briefly, "I am told you did well in the trial. I will keep the pup for a time as the wind whispers you are leaving again." Now he takes a canvas wrapping from his back. "You are to have this and weild it with pride." The big man turns and disappears into the growing deep twighlight, with the pup running after. Aiden is left with his thoughts and the unknown wrap. About 4 feet long and weighing over 15 pounds. Unwrap Highlight to display spoiler: {Master work Orc Double axe}
Garret finds his tent has been cleaned and displayed on a stand in the center is a beautiful suit of polished chainmail. Emblazoned into the chest area, molten silver and copper forms the holy symbol of Domi. The armor is of Masterwork quality and the symbol could function as divine focus.
Bohdi returns to his tent, thoughts filled with the book and what secrets he might learn. Upon entering, things are as they should be. Bohdi sits down and begins his study. The entire book seems to be written in High Woldian. An ancient mundabe language of Glyphs and symbols and therefore undecipherable to Read magic. http://www.woldiangames.com/high_woldian/html/high_woldian.htm After a time, Bohdi realizes Squork has been very quiet. Looking up he spies the bird sitting contently on a small cedar coffer. Ahh that's nice. A new perch for yo...wait a moment I do not own a cedar coffer Investigation brings a gift from Zaran City. Inside wrapped in velvet is a Leather covered book with 50 vellum pages and from the scent Bohdi knows it to be a book for scribing spells. The outer binding has a place for a quill, a beautiful blue black feather some 18" in length and a personal store of ink, about 2oz, set right in the binding. As gorgeous as the book is, the small leather pouch holds the real gift, 6 high quality white pearls and a snow owl feather.
Nauthiz'Ull returns to his tent to find the pup playfully dancing about a package of his own, an old and tattered wrap of treated whale skin. Within is something that he immediately recognizes. His father's bow. but how? A small parchment explains a hunting party discovered the bow on the tundra some 3 years ago. There were no other signs, but the bow was well known to all. As Nauth was not of age he could not have it...until now. The bow is a masterwork Composite Long Bow with a strength rating of +1.
Frigg'Isa returns a short time later to find Nauth still sitting upon his knees and cradling the bow. "She told me of the gift to you." she says softly and sits down next to him. "Father would be proud of you to use it. He still smiles upon you, you know. that is why I was asked to linger a bit, to give you a moment or two." Nauth can sense his sister is holding something back, but he also knows her far too well to try and determine what it may be directly. As if senseing another of her brothers thoughts, "I too was given a gift" and at this she produces a necklace of whale teeth and silver. "It is a foci from the old woman who taught me of the witching ways." Then with almost a laugh, "Now I just need to learn how to use it. We should get some sleep dear Nauth, tomorrow will be a long day."
DM Feel free to Post....I will post again early afternoon....
Bohdi Nackle Friday April 22nd, 2005 1:43:12 PM
Inside his hut, Bohdi beamed with delight. A book of unknown mysteries! A gift of arcane magic! And the materials for him to cast spells to identify the properties of ....
Wait a minute. Wait--just--one--minute! He seized the pouch of pearls and feathers and thought to himself. No, I can't today. But tomorrow, I could--no, I'll have to wait. Oooh! I hate waiting! He grinned, and tossed a piece of meat at Squork, who adeptly snatched it in midair.
"Squork, old pal, I have a feeling that this is going to be a trip to remember."
Proposed spell list: Spell list: Level 0: Detect Magic, (2) OPEN SLOTS Gnome abilities: Ghost Sound, Dancing Lights, Prestidigitation, Speak with Burrowing Mammals Level 1: Color Spray, Endure Elements, ONE OPEN SLOT
Need the group's input on whether to use up the open Level 1 slot for an Endure Elements for Aiden or Nauthiz'Ull. Otherwise, Bohdi could leave the slot open and prepare a spell later. For the open Level 0 slots, I'm thinking Arcane Mark and Light, but there, too, we can wait to decide that.
DMs: we didn't happen to get XP enough to level just yet, did we? Just curious....
Drew ooc Friday April 22nd, 2005 2:30:09 PM
I'm not sure if you want me to post for Frigg'Isa now as well, so I will post Nauth's and if you want me to then I will post Frigga's too, or you can do.
Also, DMs, Thanks for making me almost cry at work while reading the last post. I am so exhausted from preparing for finals and from working 40 a week, that my emotions are all screwed up right now...yeah, that's it.
You could not have given me a better gift.
Nauthiz'Ull Friday April 22nd, 2005 2:44:07 PM
Looking up as his sister enters their tent, Nauth makes no attempt to wipe away the tears on his cheeks.
"I am humbled sis. Speachless."
A look of confusion and sudden anger explodes in his eyes.
"Why did they keep this from ME! All of these years I thought our father, Ull'Heimdall, lived on only in our memory! Now they give me this? And we are supposed to do something for them?! Tell me why!"
The young man's knuckles snap white as the pressure of his grip nears the likes of a bite from a dire crocodile. A faint sound like grinding teeth is present as well.
Into the Wilds [DM Post] Friday April 22nd, 2005 7:39:06 PM
Back post supplies and anything else you wish.
The group, Aiden, Nauth, Frigg, Garret and Bohdi once again push into the tundra and the wilds beyond Ice Peak Village. This time the journey is to the south and into the immediate mountatins. The devastating Cold of the northern tundra will not have to be dealt with, but the mountains bring thier own peril, that of forraging wolf packs and dangers beyond the nightmares of most men, Polar worms.
The before Twighlight hours pass rapidly and the sun soon climbs into the morning position. Without the open tundras relentless wind, it almost feels warm as the sun alights upon the party.
Still more hours pass, then the ground itself trembles slightly, then again. Polar worm, Aiden and Nauth have both heard of the few survivors tales of the ground quakes these massive predators cause just as they reach the surface and attack. There is only seconds to act, but the attack never comes.
KA! BOOOOOOOOM!!
It is then that a boom of thunder more powerful than any ever heard before rocks the area. The very snow on the ground dances through the sound. It is quickly followed by three more sucessive sound blasts.
KA! BOOOOOOOOM!!
KA! BOOOOOOOOM!!
KA! BOOOOOOOOM!!
Looking about you the source is guessed at. On the eastern horizon, a colunm of smoke, blacker then the deepest night, reaches beyond the sky, impossibly high and vast in size. The group stands almost transfixed by what could almost be guessed at the entire estruction of the great Jagged Mountain range. The colunm continues to climb even higher.
Awakening Saturday April 23rd, 2005 2:59:20 AM The Wold stirs....
A breeze springs up, seemingly from out of nowhere. On the Sargass Plains, the unending grasses begin to move and toss, and the rapkes pace, restless and uneasy. In the Windbourne Hills, horses whinny and break into a run for no reason. In the tunnels beneath Dirt City, sewer rats begin to flee their hiding places, running into well-traveled corridors while the people wonder what it all could mean. And in the Emerald Kingdom, the anticipation is very nearly palpable as the animals awaken and the trees stir in the wind.
Something is coming.
The Wold seems to hold its collective breath as the Sleeper stretches, turns, sighs...and awakens. Eyes the color of the sea blink and focus as the Sleeper regards the Wold around him. The expanse of New Elanna, the great bulk of Shadow Mountain, the mysteries of the Southern Continent, even the wonder that is Floating City--all of these are known to the Sleeper in a heartbeat. A frown of concentration crosses his face, then a satisfied smile as he begins to know what must be done.
The Sleeper takes a breath and stretches out his hand...
Garrett Saturday April 23rd, 2005 12:07:42 PM
Upon returning to his tent, Garrett is stunned upon seeing the beautiful armor given to him. His emotions overflow as tears streak down his face and pride fills every cell of his body.
He quickly takes off his present armor and moves to don his present. Right before he touches it he sees his hands stretching out and seems to talk to the armor. "No, this will not do. look at me, I'm filthy. You will be covered in blood and mud soon enough, but not this day. Not this day."
Garrett spends a good bit of time cleaning and washing himself before donning the armor. After admiring it's look and feel for quite some time, he sets about preparing to leave, packing up 10 days worth of rations and resupplying. And then walks around the village several times with no apparent purpose other than to show off his new armor.
As the group leaves camp, Garrett hasn't stopped smiling. Until The area rocks with the sound of thunder and the feel of the earth shaking. "What in the name of Domi is happening?". Garrett just stares at the sight unable to say another word.
Memorized spells
0: create water, Light, mending, resistance
1st: Bless, Shield of faith, Command, Magic Weapon
(ooc: From the DM post it appears that we know the mountains to the south to not be nearly as cold as the plains. Having lived there, if my belief is that we will not need endure elements, then the above is my spell list. If Garrett isn't sure, then Let me know and I will take 2 endure elements instead.
Also, how do we do HP's for gaining a level...Roll them here, or L&B, or ??)
DM Post answers Saturday April 23rd, 2005 2:50:27 PM
Mid Spring is fairly unpredictable. generally the south mountains will be warmer than the open tundra.
roll HP in the Loot and Booty stating that it is what you are doing
Aiden Saturday April 23rd, 2005 5:15:21 PM
Aiden was surprised, enough that it showed, when the gigantic man approached him. Bowing his head, his hands take the gift, his callused fingers wrapping around what could be a shaft.
"THank you..." he replied, his voice tinged with the huskiness of youth and emotion, "I did but what was expected..."
Nonetheless he did take the gift though, with the thought of perhaps not truly opening it until he felt that he had 'earned' it.
He did smile however, as he watched the bundle of wolf energy bounce off after the barrell chested man.
The Twins Saturday April 23rd, 2005 10:44:11 PM
Frigg'Isa jumps at the explosion that is her brother.
"Nauth, brother, you know that you could not have father's bow until you became a man. I think it was best for kayra to keep it until today. Not only would you ave done everything that you could to get your hands on that bow before today, but you travels today alone prove that Ull'Heimdall's spirit fills your chest. You...welll...don't take this the wrong way, but...you weren't wrothy enough for it until today."
Frigga turns from her brother and begins unpacking her stuff, taking inventory and repacking what she needed for the trip, along with a new stock of rations.
The young man stays on the ground and stares at the bow for minutes longer. To Nauth, it seemed an eternity. Thoughts and memories engulf his mind, body, soul and vision.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Out amongst the rock and ice, the twins walk side by side. Both keep to themselves most of the way, their thoughts away amongst the stars.
As the explosion stops the group dead in their tracks, Nauth looks up to the eastern horizon and the column of black smoke. Reaction and instinct brings forth a quick analysis and suprinsingly enough, a sigh of relief that the sounds were truly not a Polar Worm.
Frigga reaches for Nauth's arm out of instinct, but checks herself and looks to the others.
The dark-skinned young man chuckles a bit. "Well, at least being an adult isn't boring. Aiden, thank the gods that it isn't a Polar Worm, but what in the Realm of Shadows is that!?"
A frown streaks across Frigg'Isa's face. "That. That is not good. How in the...what in the...The Jagged Mountains Nauth. How could it be?"
Aiden Sunday April 24th, 2005 10:22:19 AM
Aiden's face lifted upwards towards the mountains, squinting a bit as he tried to not allow the snow and ice to create blindness. Eye's tearing, "No...not a polar worm..." he muttered in reply.
"Does not look much better," as he agreed with Nauthiz, "but it is not a polar worm."
<tags for reaction>
"But we'll have to be wary for avalanches if we get closer to those mountains with the growing warmth, and whatever is causing that..."
End of Days [DM Post] Monday April 25th, 2005 2:08:02 PM
The group stands in mixed feelings of grateful it was not a Polar Worm attack and mezorized horror as the East continues to rise in a great black colum of darkness. It is simply beyond all experience and for all looks of it, seems to be heralding the possible end of the Wold.
The ground had ceased to shake a few moments after it had stared, violent but bearable. As the new young men and woman from Ice Peak contemplate the cloud a rather strange thing happens. Almost like a great invisible hand in the sky sweeps all the clouds away from the area. Rapidly they seem to flee from the east towards the west. As the race by, a thundering boom rocks the ground. The blast is so intense it literally knocks you down, blasting the air about you, snow flies from the hills and sprays the group. None is harmed, blessings are counted.
But even as you attain your feet once more the ground erupts into a violent shaking. It seems to pitch left and right, sliding under your feet with a groaning grind of ice and rock protesting its millenium slumber at an end. A nearby cliff hang in the ice crack and plunges 300' to the ground, exploding into a deadly array of ice and rock, luckily none were too close. Still the ground shakes on and continues for seemeingly hours. Pitching and twisiting upon itself and then silence. The breeze stirs cold upon your face and the brilliant sun looks down from on high. All has been righted it seems, that is until gazes move eastward once more. The rising pillar beytond fathomable size and scope continues to press upwards through the sky.
Bohdi Nackle Monday April 25th, 2005 9:25:51 PM ooc: Just catching up from the weekend... Spells to be updated once I can update a CS.
Bohdi hugged the ground for dear life. "Wauuuugggghh!"
Aiden Monday April 25th, 2005 10:56:41 PM
Aiden worked hard to try and prevent himself from falling over from the intense shaking of the quake. However, it was extremely difficult, even as Aiden let out a hiss and yell of being startled by the strange events.
Garrett Tuesday April 26th, 2005 8:41:17 AM
Garrett hangs on the best he can.
As the ground thrashed around from the collapsing cliff, both Frigga and Nauth found themselves on the ground.
As the violence of the land ceasaed, the brown-haired young woman lifts herself up and brushes off her furs, all the while looking at the pilar of black smoke on the horizon.
"This is strange. The clouds, the mountains. What is going on here?" Frigga lunges into the depths of her memory to try and recall anything that may be of use. (Know:IceVein 25 nat 20!) As well as any information that she may have remembered, the young witch tries to figure out how the clouds parted the way that they did, and to foresee the impact of that (Survival 14).
Nauth sits on the snow packed ground and watches intently as he scans the horizon, the cliff and his immediate surroundings(Spot 15,9,26 respectively) for any clues as to what in The Land of Shadows is going on here. His brow wrinklesin thought as he begins piecing together everything that has happened and that is happening(Know:Nature 23/Know Geography 14 /Survival 17)
"I think whatever is happening is bigger than we imagine. We must get going however."
The young ranger gets up with a spring and takes a quick scan for any tracks in the area for safety's sake(survival 18).
Onward Ice soldier DM Post Tuesday April 26th, 2005 4:23:24 PM
The wold goes mad for an instant but soon things have returned to the placid cold of teh Ice Vein and the group continues deeper into the mountains towards Dyngjufjöll the Ice Mountain. Frigg and Nauth do thier best to recall anything story myth legend of such an event but there simply is none. It has simply never been even dreamt of by the bards.
The weather will likely remain clear Frigg thinks and thus hurries the group along. Several hours have passed since the last titantic concussion wave hit. Since, there have been several lighter tremors and quakes, none dagerous except to quickly make sure no one is under a hang of ice.
The hills and the group crosses to arrive at the foot of the glacier paths has been devoid of tracks and the call of any animals. AS if all had earlier fled from here. All know this to be one of the better hunting grounds and thus, this realization fills each of the Icers with a small sense of foreboding.
Bohdi Nackle d20+9=26 Tuesday April 26th, 2005 5:31:52 PM
Squork flapped his wings and cawed furiously at the Wold gone mad. Bohdi could only stare, transfixed, at the billowing column of smoke that dominated their view to the East, and seemed to have set the Wold on edge.
"I've never heard of anything like this before. (Knowledge: Arcana, 26, just to be sure.) Wh-what--what if--what if that happens again?" he trembled. His fingers shaking from the successive blasts, Bohdi tremulously asked for a brief halt. "I left several spells unprepared today, but I fear going any further without filling in those slots," he explained. "With the ground and the mountains cracking and exploding as they seem to be doing, we dare not press on without them."
He struggled to compose himself as he traced familiar--and not so familiar--runes in the air and uttered incantations. The spells seemed to calm him somewhat, however, and he nodded as his preparations finished.
"Presto ensorcelsior protectionis!" Bohdi cried, and a new, blue rune appeared in the air in front of the gnome. The rune wrapped Bohdi and Squork like a blanket before disappearing, leaving only a slight bluish tint to the air surrounding them.
"Ready," he said to the others, before turning his head back to the East. "... For just about anything .... I guess."
Spell list--REVISED, owing to new and improved spells!: Gnome Abilities: Dancing Lights, Ghost Sound, Prestidigitation, Speak with Burrowing Mammals Level 0: Detect Magic (x2), Acid Splash, Light Level 1: Endure Elements, Color Spray, Feather Fall, Mage Armor (cast on self)
The Twins Tuesday April 26th, 2005 9:19:57 PM
The brown-haired witch nods in agreement at Bohdi's action and maybe his nervousness as well.
"Bohdi, dear, you are easily flustered but strong of mind wunjo. I think I speak for us all when I say that it is good to have you with us and not on your way back Zarnan City." Frigga looks over the group solemnly and pulled back her furred hood. "I think that we will find out that all of us will lend something powerful to whatever journies we take."
Frigga then quickly pats and rubs Nauth's back before pulling her hood back up. Nauth closes his eyes momentarily at the touch of his only true family.
"I cannot help but be drawn to find out what happened to the animals from around here. Father used to talk about this place as rich with game. Aiden, what in the name of druids would cause this mass migration?"
Nauth bites his lip in frustration, his words seem to be more mumblings to himself than towards the group, but he does look to Aiden more than once.
Frigg'Isa clears her throat and reminds the rest of the group that we do need to keep moving on.
Aiden Tuesday April 26th, 2005 10:09:17 PM
Aiden thought about Nauth's words for a few moments, "Instinct..." was his first response. "Fear...or a new, strong leader..."
Frowning, "Either way, not good." Turning towards the others, in particular, Frigga, Bohdi, and Garrett. "You are more familiar with magic...is there a way to find out more of these omens? Or to alert the village elders as to what we have seen?"
Garrett Wednesday April 27th, 2005 9:12:01 AM
"I have no way of learning more about what is going on. It seems to me that these things are part of the prophecy."
"Remember the High Priestesses words." "Burning spring, the grass afire, seek you the Wall. The Wold Shakes this night the end of dreaming and the beginning of a new dawn. The Hand moves and the Wold is refreshed."
"The wold has shaken. It seems as if we dropped a snowlball on the hill, and now we are watching it grow. I'm praying we find some answers written in the ancient texts we hope to decipher."
Glaciaral Rift DM Post Wednesday April 27th, 2005 10:45:35 AM
As Bohdi forces his breathing to normal and relaxes before an open spell book on a nearby bare rock the rest of the group discusses the ramifications of the last few hours and if there is anything Divine or Arcane that they posess that could provide insight.
Alas, the answer is no, however Garret is able to recall the preistesses words and with ringing truth they most definately apply to all that has happened.
Aiden answers well Nauth's question on the animals. Creatures of the natural Wold can often sense things well in advance of the dangers they bring.
Soon Bohdi is ready and the group moves on, now into the glaciar itself, the path that will lead them to the foot of Dyngjufjöll and the Cave of the Ancients. By the directions and distance given to you by the Priestess, you will not reach the cave until midday tomorrow.
The deepening walls of ice and rock soon become only ice, footing is not as sure as it was, though none are in danger of falling. The sun and the great black cloud are now hidden from view by the same great ice walls rising to either side. The crevace itself is more of less a constant 30' wide and without the sun the coolness of the place is more keenly felt, though the thick clothing layers still provide ample protection this day. Hours pass, midday comes and goes and still the winding path descends and pushes forward. Walls now rise hundreds of feet towards the open line of blue above, appearing no thicker than a pair of fingers.
It reaches your ears as a faint groan, perhaps a shift of ice far off, but then again closer, almost around the next bend. Listen DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {From around the bend there comes an inhuman moan of misery. This sound is mixed with the light crack and breaking of ice}
As the day presses on and the ice walls grow exponentialy above, Frigga seems her normal self, but Nauth a bit quieter. His thoughts pull him this way and that. As the group pushes on, the twins, with a connection stronger than other siblings have both look at each other at the exact same moment.
The noise perks both of their ears and a look of concern spreads across Frigg'Isa's face while a look of suspicion envelopes Nauthiz'Ull.
The dark-skinned ranger holds his hand up to the group and slowly drops his pack to the ground. He keeps with him his weapons and takes the 100' length of silk rope that Frigga has on her pack. With ease and grace Nauth slips forward without a word to scout the bend. Upon reaching an appropriate distance, he does his best to stay hidden and peers around the bend to see what he can see. His steps are cautious and his eyes are keen for any signs of faulty ice or natural dangers in the area.
Bohdi stopped where he was and gripped his enchanted dagger, pulling it from its belt sheath. "What was that?" he hissed to the others. He craned an oversized gnomish ear to listen, but heard nothing in particular. (Listen 10)
"Squork, what did you hear?" he asked the raven, but the bird was even less attentive. (Listen 5) "Dratted bird. Be useful for a change! Go fly up to that bend up ahead, and take a look!"
Reluctantly, the raven did as Bohdi commanded, flying up ahead and returning to tell the group, in a croaking voice, what it had seen (as usual, however, the protective dweomer that had surrounded the bird vanished when it left Bohdi's side).
Garrett d20+4=7 Wednesday April 27th, 2005 1:47:03 PM
(OOC: Geez...lousy rolls on this end...)
Aiden, still a bit awestruck (though not trying to visibly show it to the others), failed to hear the noises from the distance (ooc: failed by 1). Or perhaps it was due to his mind thinking about whether the animals had sensed whatever was occurring in the black cloud, and maybe, had more common sense than the humans who were 'blindly' going towards the dangerous area instead of away from it.
Taking out some of his rope, he looked towards the others, "When we get to some spots, we may want to tie this around ourselves..." he suggested.
Nauthiz'Ull creeps cautiously to the bend for a look as Squork flies overhead and around the bend. The rest hang back, but not too far and await information on what it may be causing the noise.
By the time Nauthiz'Ull makes it to the bend, Squork is returning. The young man sees an odd sight at first. 5 men in warm dress moving towards him which is the report Squork supplies the rest of the small company. They are about 40' away. The young ranger of Ice Peak is about to stand when an alarm goes off in his head. The clothes are not wrapped close, the gait of the five is faulty and it is then as they close to 20' the horror of it becomes apparent.
Sunken eyes of white, stare blankly from the wind burned blue white skin. Clumps of ice hang from clothing scraps with are unfastened and blow open in the wind. No natural life remains. It is obvious they see or rather sense the living being behind the bend a short distance away. A gutteral sound like that of a dying man's last breath leaks from each of them.
Garrett waits for Nauth to tell us what he sees. Upon Nauth letting us know that they are undead, Garrett Moves forward 20' and attempts to turn the undead (and in typical fashion of the powerful die roller, fails to turn the skeleton of a small bird). That failing miserably, Garrett stands there with holy symbol in hand waiting to get pummeled.
"I will distract them by holding out my holy symbol so you guys can get into better positions. These must be those turn proof undead I heard about."
With the sight of Squork flying back towards his companions, the young ranger assumes that they will get the message.
Nauth unshoulders Ull'Heimdall's bow while taking a 5' side step (J7, into the little nook so that he cannot be flanked). A energy that he has never felt before flows through him as he nochs the first arrow.
As he lets loose, his body continues its motions, grabbing for another arrow, noching it and letting it fly.
The startlement leaves Nauth dumbfounded as to how he was capable of such fluid, quick actions but for the moment he does not complain. A look of determination and silence hold his face. ================= Attacks (Rapid Fire, -2 to both shots) A1-17 (13+3Dex+1MW) A2-12 (8+3Dex+1MW)
The brown haired young lady sees the reaction of her brother before the words of Squork and Bohdi register and immediately mummbles a couple of words, bringing forth her mysterious dagger. She advances, but knows that she is more helpful behind the front line.
Bohdi Nackle (AC 22, HP 14/14) and Squork (AC 15, HP 7/7) Thursday April 28th, 2005 1:43:23 PM
Bohdi puzzled over Squork's croaked message. "Men, you say?" Bohdi echoed. "Strange men? Warm clothes? Well, what's so bloody strange about that?"
Bohdi listened to the bird some more as, peripherally, he became aware of Nauthiz'Ull doing ... something ... drawing his bow? "Blue men?" he was repeating now. "Blue men? What the bloody hell does that mean, 'blue men'? I mean ... what ... does ...."
The gnome trailed off as he saw Garrett moving forward with his symbol of Domi displayed and pronouncing words to cow the minions of undeath, and a slow, creeping realization began to dawn. It was quickly followed by a look of alarm.
"Wauuuuuuuggggghhh!" he wailed, followed by a high, keening whine of a gnome in deadly distress.
Drawing from instinctual, racial knowledge born of generations of evading larger predators, Bohdi ducked and bobbed his way across the ice sideways, hoping to gain a clearer view. From there, he stared at the approaching ice wights with growing horror.
Actions: --Total Defense (+4 AC this round, standard action) --Move to N11 (I believe, based on the map, this is 20' from Bohdi's current position and may allow a clear line of sight around the bend)
Aiden d20=11 d8=6 d20=3 Thursday April 28th, 2005 1:43:29 PM
Aiden began to make his way towards the front. Right now they needed someone to block off the shambling forms from reaching the others, and given his reach with his weapon, he was perhaps the best of the group to do so.
Aiden quietly strides forward to take a position in front, "nauth...pull back for a better shot. I shall delay them..."
(OOC: HOOT...going to try the dual attack with the axes...I'm at +4/+4 due to the -2/-2)
Garrett (Supplemental) Thursday April 28th, 2005 4:32:34 PM
Garrett's move took him to position J/0 on the map (which I really like, glad you did it. much easier for combat to be able to visualize)
Garrett after Failing to send the undead fleeing looks at his holy symbol with an odd look and thinks to himself, "I remember learning this.... How did it go? step 1. forcefully present holy symbol with conviction. Step 2. Let the power of Domi flow through you as you say something intimidating. Damn, that was the problem, I forgot to say something intimidating."
The few, the proud, the corpses DM Post Thursday April 28th, 2005 9:04:49 PM
Nauthiz'Ull steps against the wall and in one fluid motion lets fliy with two deadly shafts. Both strike one in the chest, but the heads are turned by the frozen flesh. It appear the arrows did little more than add another hole to the tattered fur it wears.
Garret quickly moves up, hand to his chest trying to summon the very power of Domi, but the lifeless things' gazeless stare steals his heart and he is unable to.
Aiden moves in front of Nauthiz'Ull and his deadly axe cuts into one of the creatures as it closes. Aiden too, notices the resistance as his axe bites into the once human. The flesh, blood and everything between is thoroughly frozen. you can only swing twice as a full attack, having moved you could only make one.
Bohdi moves to get a better look and quickly wishes he had not done so.
Frigg'Isa closes behind her brother, prepared to lend assistance.
The 5 dead men lurk forward, the one shot by Nauthiz'Ull cracks a horrid blood stealing smile at the young ranger and draws a wheathered and rotting club. One draws a shortsword from a leather scabbard and croaks "Kill them" A third wields an iron shod oak staff and the last two are unarmed, clenching rotted frozen fleshed fists into tight balls.
Emboldened by Garrett's words, Bohdi gathered himself and recalled a spell he had hung for just such a circumstance. He strode forward next to the space that Garrett had previously occupied (G10).
"Circus acribus Iectilis!" he cried. A bright, flaming green rune appeared before him, formed into a sphere of acid, and flew across the ice canyon at the wight standing to one side of the melee (Y).
Meanwhile, Squork fluttered around Bohdi's head, hoping to distract anyone attempting to attack the gnome (Aid Another, DC 10 = 16, success, raises Bohdi's AC +2 this round).
Actions: --Move to G10 (due east of Garrett's previous position on the map) --Cast Acid Splash at Y (NOTE: if Y was turned, target a different, unturned wight--in order of preference, Z, then X). Ranged touch attack =13 Acid damage 1d3 = 1 (rats) --Squork Aids Bohdi's AC
Aiden again attacks his foe, swinging the axe with the double blades in a devastating arc.
(OOC: oh for the love of pete...)
His first swing slipped as he was unused to the finely balanced weapon, and the slippery spray of blood that had frozen on the weapon. The second attack was nigh better.
Garret steps forth and this time with words of intimidation, the power of Domi causes two of the fell creatures to turn and move away. [X and Y]
Bohdi steps forward as well and sends an acid splash at Z. There is the tell tale casustic hissing as the spell impacts the creature, but it makes no reaction and continues steadily forward.
Nauthiz'Ull circles around for a less crowded shot, but as he does so the one of the men strikes out with his fisted hand. The blow lands solidly and Nauthiz'Ull feels a deep touch of supernatural cold spread through the bruised shoulder [AoO Hit AC 18 Dmg 5 + Cold damage 2 total 7. If you mave and do anything else you draw an AoO if starting the movement in a threatened square] This time the arrow sails wide of the mark.
Frigg'Isa moves to her brothers side, dagger appearing in hand. Ready to intercept any who try and close with the bowman.
Aiden stands his ground and tries to end the fight with two great swings, but during both attempts something goes wrong and neither connects.
The club is raised and descends with complete ineffectiveness, Aiden pulls his head back and only the air notices the clubs passing.
The second creature strikes with his fist, the punch lands solidly to his chest, blasting air from the young man and something else. Like the icey grip off death about his heart for a moment. [Hit AC 22 dmg 7 + 2 Cold total 9]
AIDEN/PAUL, ooc: Bohdi's actions this round take some coordination with Aiden. Bohdi's first action this round is the shout (free action). He will hold the remainder of his actions until after Aiden acts.
Bohdi shifted to his left to get just the right angle (G9) and waited for the tall, imposing ranger to pull back as requested. When Aiden complied--or when the moment for Aiden to comply had passed, and Aiden had not yet complied--Bodhi unleashed his spell.
"Arcus confutatis maledictis!" he pronounced, casting a myriad spectrum of dazzling colors at the undead walkers.
(Cast: Color Spray, from G9, in 15' cone centered on H7. Effect should hit all three non-turned undead--W, V, and Z. Will save DC 17, or:
Squork continued to circle Bohdi's head and try to provide extra protection, but not very well (Aid Another 3, fails).
Actions: --Free action to tell Aiden to move out of the way; DELAY ACTIONS UNTIL AIDEN MOVES, OR BEFORE UNDEAD MOVE, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST --Move to G9 (5' step due west) --Cast Color Spray targeted at H7 (affects W, V, and Z) --Squork fails to Aid Bohdi's AC
Justin Webber (Co-DM) Turning of the dead Tuesday May 3rd, 2005 10:38:14 AM
Bohdi casts his color spray spell at the enemy as it gives off a nice light show but ultimately it didn't effect the undead.
Nauth fires a pair of arrows, one hitting the frozen dead but the arrow simply snaps in two on impact and the other arrow whizzes on by.
Aiden falls back defensivly.
Garret summons his faith in Domi and succeeds in driving the remaining zombies back. He swells in pride at the power his lord Domi has given him but unfortunetly knows also that the zombies will be returning shortly.
Frig moves to Nauth but to the side for a clear shot. To her dismay though her sling stone goes horribly wrong.
Currently all zombies are fleeing for the moment.
Bohdi Nackle (AC 18, HP 14/14) and Squork (AC 15, HP 7/7) Tuesday May 3rd, 2005 11:37:56 AM ooc: LOL! My DnD "accent" showing through--I knew Aiden could "withdraw," but had never learned about undead and mind-affecting spells! Learned something new! : )
Bohdi stared at his hands for a moment. "That should ... have ... worked ...." he murmured, then the light of realization dawned upon him. "Right! No minds to confuse! Stupid Bohdi, you should have remembered that! Guess I was too frightened."
He looked at the others. "We have just a few moments until those creatures may come back. I have an idea. Can one or all of us climb up one of these ledges? If we can reach the top, we can use the height advantage against them--plus, I've got another nasty trick in mind."
Bohdi reached into his pouch and pulled out his thunderstone, while Squork flew up and around the bend to keep an eye on the retreating undead. "Been waiting to use this in just this kind of situation. Get up on the ledge, weaken the ice, stand back, and then set off the thunderstone. BOOM! Ice slide. Could do for all those nasties in one go."
Actions: --Retrieve thunderstone from belt pouch --Squork flies up and after the undead, reporting back empathically (Calm, Danger) and verbally whether the creatures continue to retreat or are returning.
P.S. DMs, let me know what you think about the thunderstone idea generally. In the Wold, the thunderstone's primary function--to cause a decrease in an opponent's INIT--is moot. If Bohdi's idea is too outlandish, just let me know what purpose you think the thunderstone could otherwise be put to.
Garrett Jax (AC: 18, HP:16/16) d8+2=6 d8+2=6 Tuesday May 3rd, 2005 2:25:29 PM
"Those undead should be on the run for about a minute. Give them another minute to get back here after that, and we should have 2 minutes, give or take."
Garrett steps over to Aiden and converts his command spell into a CLW, healing Aiden for 6hp.
"You're next Nauth, for healing. We've got a little time to come up with a plan. I like Bohdi's idea but I don't know if we'll have the time to weaken the ice enough for a thunderstone to cause an iceslide."
"Nauth's arrows didn't seem to affect them too much. To really hurt them we probably need to use blades or blunt force weaponry. Having high ground won't help much unless we can still get at them with melee weapons."
"We could just form a defensive front with myself, Nauth, and Aiden readied for their approach, and Bohdi and Frigg in the rear for spell support."
"Nauth, Frigg, Aiden What do you three think we should do?"
Next round, Garrett casts CLW on Nauth, converting shield of faith for 6hp healing for Nauth.
Aiden d20=7 d20=7 Tuesday May 3rd, 2005 4:30:59 PM
Aiden felt the warmth, and renewal of energy as whatever was 'lost' was replaced (for the most part) with the spell of healing. It was quite amazing how prayers could be used for things other than destruction, something not entirely shown by the shamans of Twin Tusks.
"Thank you..." he replied to Garrett.
Aiden listened to the idea of Bohdi's, and then eyed the ice formations, not only where he was planning to use the thunderstone, but where they (the group) was located. Getting caught up in an 'accidental avalanche' was something he did want to avoid.
(OOC: I am guessing survival for this? 7+4 = 11 in terms of seeing whether the group would get caught up in an avalanche and if the thunderstone was strong enough)
Nauthiz'Ull (AC18 HP19/20) d20+8=28 Tuesday May 3rd, 2005 11:12:38 PM
Nauth's eyes close as the words of Domi spread a warming aura over him. The ranger rolls his next until it pops a couple of times and then opens his eyes to the group.
"Wunjos, these abominations must be dealt with immediately. Let us stay on their tales for a moment and as soon as they break free from Garrett's wonderful powers here, we spring on them. Also, Garrett I have heard that your powers do as much harm to those as it does good to us, is that true?"
nauth looks on witha glint of eagerness to track the undead down and finish this quickly.
"Wunjo," looking at Bohdi, "your idea is quite ingenious but remember that we are also in this chasm of ice and snow. If you set off a thunderstone, there is no saying what is going to collapse or shatter and where an avalanche would come from."
Nauth heads back up to where the passage turns and to the original posistion where he first saw the wretches. ============ Spot=28 (nat 20!)
Frigg'Isa (AC13 HP11/11) Tuesday May 3rd, 2005 11:17:34 PM
The brown hair of the young witch whisps across her reddened cheeks as she throws her fur hood back to talk quickly with the others.
"My magics are not as strong as Garrett's for matters of the undead but I have been blessed with the ability to sense the lifeless. I can call forth upon this ability if needed (detect undead)."
Frigga decides to stowe her sling yet again and call forth her spirit dagger another time. He face seems to be holding something back and a look of slight maturation seems to ebb into her features.
Avalanche or pursuit DM Post Wednesday May 4th, 2005 10:05:27 AM
Garret gifts the two wounded men with the healing touch of Domi as Bohdi mentions using his thunderstone to set a collapse to bury the undead upon thier return.
As the gnome looks up the walls of ice and snow soaring hundreds of feet above he and Aiden rapidly conclude that if the thunderstone succeeded if could very well bury them as well. Thunderstones also inflict 20% spell failure to any caster
Around the bend Nauthiz'Ull sees the 5 men shambling further down the crevace. Speed is definately not thier fortay and they are not too far away.
Garrett Jax(AC:18, HP:16/16) Wednesday May 4th, 2005 11:08:27 AM
"If we move within 10' feet of them, the turning effect will be broken. If you want to take them now, we can catch them. I will cast Bless, and that will make it easier for us all to hit them."
Garret casts Bless, giving us all +1 to hit, and +1 saves vs. fear.
Assuming we decide to go after the undead now, Garrett will suggest we all try and stay together as we move to catch up.
Bohdi Nackle d20+4=19 Wednesday May 4th, 2005 11:48:06 AM
"Well, all right," the gnome grumbled as the others downplayed his 'brilliant' strategy, and he pocketed his prized alchemical creation once more.
He switched from dagger to crossbow, and loaded a bolt. "But if you really have it in your heads to chase after those blasted things, let's at least have a plan ready. Can we set an ambush, for instance? A narrow place, where we can pepper them with arrows from behind cover? We should really use this time to our advantage."
Bohdi moved up--cautiously and slowly, as on his shorter legs he was slower than the rest--to survey the landscape around the bend, while maintaining an empathic link with Squork, who was still trailing the undead from a distance, both horizontally and vertically. He looked for places where the path narrowed, or where natural protrusions would offer cover. Alternatively, he looked for ice or rock that the group could quickly pile to create cover.
ooc: Bohdi's racial base speed is 20'. Note, too, that the actions described here would probably take 2 rounds.
Aiden AC 16 HP 17 Wednesday May 4th, 2005 9:50:01 PM
Aiden grunted as he saw the figures coming. "No thunderstone..." he said quite emphatically.
Taking a deep breath, "I can again step forward to block them...but is there any sort of blessing ritual that you can cast upon us Garrett?"
Aiden thought back to the various rituals and warpaint that some of the shamans used in Twin Tusks to incite the warriors to greater viciousness and skill in battle.
Nauthiz'Ull (AC18 HP19/20) Thursday May 5th, 2005 1:10:21 PM
Nauth rolls his shoulders back and draws forth his new scimitar taht he retrieved from the frozen corpses.
"I think Garret and Aiden are both right. Let us stand side by side with Bohdi and Frigg'a in the back to help us. that way we are all one on one with these things and hopefully Domi and Gargul will be on our side."
Nauth proceeds down the chasm, maintaining a distance of about fourty feet or so behind the monstrosities.
Looking back at the others a smirk smears his face.
"What? We might as well cover as much ground while we wait for the effects to wear off of them."
Frigg'Isa (AC13 HP11/11) Thursday May 5th, 2005 1:14:06 PM
The caramel skinned young lady adjusts her grip of her inspirited dagger as she listens to the others strategize.
"We need to stay together guys and not let them flank us. And Nauth is right Garret, you should be able to harm them if your prayers to Domi intend to 'heal' them. They work on opposite powers as us."
Frigga mainstains a steady pace with Nauth as he advances down the icy corridor.
Garrett (supplemental) Thursday May 5th, 2005 3:19:37 PM
"Unfortunately guys, I have no healing left. The 2 spells I just gave Aiden and Nauth, and the bless spell clean me out of cures. All I have left is the "keep you from bleeding to death" 1hp fix'er up'er. But I agree Nauth, let's keep pace."
Once we are in a formation behind these three, Garrett suggests "Hey guys, why don't we jump these three now. If wait for the turning effect to expire, the other two i already turned first will be there as well. If we jump these three, we can at least get in a quick free shot, and only have to deal with three at once."
The group closes behind the slow moving creatures. Aiden, Garret and Nauthiz'Ull walk side by side with Bohdi behind Aiden and Friggs'Isa behind Nauthiz'Ull. Three of them V, W and Z are 15' from you and the other 2 still 30' further. It has been about 6 rounds since the first group was turned by mighty Garret.
If you close to attack, remember the Bless and that to close you only get one strike because of moving greater than 5'.
"Too cavalier about this by far," Bohdi muttered. "Just be certain you all don't end up like these poor frozen buggers."
As Squork returned to Bohdi's side, Bohdi sized up the position of their "stand." He looked to the ice walls: were there places he could hide, or take cover? As a little fellow, it wouldn't take much--just a small, high ledge or crevice would do. (Search, if applicable = 25) If he saw a place along the wall where he could take cover--preferably up 10' or higher on the wall--he would try to avail himself of it. (Climb = 5; if Bohdi looks to take a really big tumble, however, he has Feather Fall available.)
Otherwise, it was "cower behind the big humans" time again. Bohdi waited and watched from behind whomever stood to the far left, letting Frigg'Isa cover the right, with his crossbow loaded and at the ready. When the signal came to commence an attack, Bohdi would fire off a bolt at the nearest undead before the melee began (Attack 20, Damage 3) and reload.
Squork flew forward and tried to help protect whomever stood directly in front of Bohdi (Aid Another to raise AC of whomever covers the left flank, d20 = 8). The raven could only offer moral support for the time being, however, as his flapping and fluttering did not seem to distract the icy-blue gaze of the ice-wights.
Garrett casts Magic Weapon on his sword, and then moves this round so as to keep pace with Aiden and Nauth. Assuming no reason to not attack presents itself, the following round Garrett will move in and swing.
"Wunjos, this time they do not leave. Their unlifes become undeaths. Got it?"
Bohdi looks over the icy cliff side and sees no place he can climb up to that will be easy to reach anyway. A slight slip would cause some damage to the little man he realizes at the height of the few spots he sees.
Aiden moves in with the others but looks to be holding his attack for the enemy to move in instead of rushing them.
Garret moves in but to his dismay his swing of his weapon goes terribly off target.
Nauth also rushes in and slices at the undead before him with a nasty two handed swing of his scimitar. He gets nice satisfaction of how his weapon cuts into the zombie well but not enough to drop it.
Frig moves along with the guys also, keeping her weapon handy as she hopes to help them out if she can.
The three hideous mockerys of life turn as one when the group closes to within 10. Smiles breaking across thier ice covered faces. One seems almost to speak, 'Hhhoooooiiiiiilll'. Like a cold winter breeze the sound rolls from it's throat.
Bohdi fires at the creature nearest Aiden who had not been engaged yet, but like Nauthiz'Ull' arrows the bolt merely ricochets off the frozen flesh.
Aiden steps in and loses partial footing, the blow still lands, and would have cut deeply were it not for the frozen flesh. Nauthiz'Ull slices into the frozen undead, leaving a small unbleeding wound.
Garret's weapon strikes hard, crystalline dust that was once blood sprays through the air about him.
The undeath on Aiden strikes with it's frozen club, but the slow ponderous blow is easily turned aside. [Hit AC 10]
The creature on Garret swings with a gnarled fist of ice and death, which too is terribly off target. [Hit AC 5]
The last thrusts with his short sword, a jagged weapon of rusted pits and neglect. The weapon cuts a deep wound across the young rangers shoulder. [Hit AC 19 dmg 7]
Bohdi watched his bolt strike home with what ordinarily would be deadly accuracy, only to bounce ineffectively off the creature's frozen hide. "Ooooooh, I knew this was a bad ideeeeeaaaa ...." the gnome began to whine.
Dropping his now-useless crossbow, Bohdi stepped forward (move to I1) and drew his small, enchanted dagger once more. "Squork, cover me!" he cried, and to the others, he added-- "If this doesn't work, I'm of no use in this fight."
"For Zander!"
Squork hovered overhead and tried to distract the undead creature on the left (V) (Aid Another, +2 to Bohdi's To Hit roll, 14 = success). The plan worked, this far at least--Bohdi saw his opening and plunged forward!
A grimace of searing pain rips through the young rangers shoulder as the ice man stabs effectively.
"If you have something with fire, USE IT!"
Nauth is apparently very frustrated and a bit peeved at this damned group of death. Again he lets his anger out and swings visciously at the abomination in front of him. ============== A-15 D-7
Frigga watches as her brother takes a blade into his shoulder, the blood seeping through his clothes.
"NAUTH! Fire, yes, right..."
Frigg'Isa then quickly unshoulders her backpack and begins rumaging through her conents, withdrawing a flask of oil.
"Nauth you take this and you get ready to use it. Now all we need is for someone to light the thing!"
A look of panic crosses the brow of the caramel toned girl as she tries to plan out how the oil should be lit.
Aiden once again created a large sweeping arc with the deadly orken blades. The first attempt at a strike was not a strong attack, but it set the creature up beautifully for the follow up hit.
Bohdi steps around with Sqourk doing his best and jabs the undead thing hard. Bohdi feels the blade bounce as if he were trying to create a hole in the ice with it.
Nauthiz'Ull calls for anyone to produce some fire, which Frigg'Isa promptly starts to reply with. Nauthiz'Ull weaves left and slashes across the creature again.
Aiden spins the axe before him and makes two successive strikes, the first scrapes across the humans arm and the second, rips a fatal wound across the collarbone and jaw. A fatal would that is, if blood still couresed through the man's veins.
Calling out some advise to his friends, Garret plunges his sword through the man's chest to the sound of crushing snow and ice. Wrentching it free with a twist, Garret has just enough time to raise his own defenses again.
As the three frozen men attack the light that was shining through the crack high above fails and then fades to almost nothing. Quick glances stealed in teh heat of combat reveal a grey-black cloud has moved overhead,
The club strikes at Aiden, a poorer attack the ranger has never seen. It was slow and crude, no better than that of a clumsy child.
The center swings with a balled fist of ice at Garret. Proving that it too could miss the ground were it to fall in it.
The last creature strikes at Nauthiz'Ull and is likewise found wanting in accuracy or power.
"Uh, Garrett, I think they're already ... never mind," the gnome corrected himself, as he thought better of his comment.
Stepping back cautiously to where he previously stood (5' step, provokes no AoO, back to P2), Bohdi offered his assistance to Frigg'Isa. "I can help light that! Flamnis acribus digitorum!" (Cast: Prestidigitation, "flame finger")
In a flash, Bohdi's extended index finger burst forth with a foot-long jet of yellowish flame that danced and lapped toward Frigg'Isa's outstretched flask of oil. "Here! Use this!" he exclaimed. "If this works, I can help to make more oil."
Meanwhile, Squork continued to flap around Aiden to try to help the ranger protect himself. (Aid Another 4, fails) It didn't seem to make much difference, though.
Aiden d20=5 d20=3 Tuesday May 10th, 2005 11:09:48 PM
The reaction of the wound that Aiden had given to the creature chilled his blood. But he could not give in and appear weak to the others, but instead, he tried to press onwards, and destroy the creature. But that little twinge of fear made him hesitant, causing his strikes to not be on mark.
~come now Aiden...you are a stronger warrior this this...~ he urged himself as he prepared for the counter attack.
Frigg'Isa (AC13 HP11/11) Wednesday May 11th, 2005 9:01:57 AM
Just as Frigga finished removing the oil, an over zealous gnome lets a tongue of flame flick from his finertips.
"Dear Gargul Bohdi! Wait until I am ready!"
Frigga then grabs a foot length of her rope and cuts it off and thrusts it into the piton of oil. Holding it up with a look of satisfaction, she holds it out for Bohdi to light. Once the flame has taken to the rope, she moves to the flank of the creature attacking Nauth.
"Nauth get out of there!"
The brown haired girl closes her eyes momentarily, and says a prayer to an unknown power. ============= Move-N6 Will throw oil next round as I assume that this has taken all available actions for the round. The valley hemmed in by the great glacier walls darkens more as the grey black cloud overhead thickens bringing an unsettling gloom to those who battle beneath it.
Garret ducks the clumsy swing and with a great cry hacks horizontally into the mans chest. The blade passes a third through him and upon it's exit, it topples with a thunking sound of frozen meat upon the ice and rock.
Bohdi lights the flask just as Frigg'Isa completes her preparation of the bottle. The young woman calls for her brother to make room and prepares to throw.
Nauthiz'Ull spins the scimitar infront of him, weaving it back and forth to deflect any attack by the shortsword.
Aiden is taken slightly aback by the gruesome and wholly unatural look to his opponent. The grisly scene breaks his concentration and neither blow lands.
The frozen man holding the club, makes a large overhand swing, which Aiden easily sidesteps. [Hit AC 8]
With a chomping noise of frozen teeth, Nauthiz'Ull's opponent lunges forward with his weapon. The ranger defenses more than up to the task and the blade is turned aside. [Hit AC 18]
Bohdi Nackle (AC 18, HP 14/14) and Squork (AC 15, HP 7/7) d20=17 Wednesday May 11th, 2005 5:52:54 PM
Something about the battle stances of the group began those clockwork wheels spinning in Bohdi's head again. With visions of the battle games of his youth in Zander City flashing before his eyes, he observed: "Aiden! Nauth! Move to flank them! They can't cover all of you if you spread out!"
Meanwhile, the gnome rummaged through his pack and withdrew a flask from his alchemy tools. Focusing his magical powers into his hand, Bohdi transformed the flask until, magically, it became a twin of the flask that Frigg'Isa was holding! (Use Prestidigitation to transform--effect only lasts an hour) "Ah," Bohdi murmured with satisfaction. He poured water from his waterskin into the transformed flask.
"I can make this into another oil flask, if your idea works, Frigg," he called to the ice-witch.
Squork continued to try to help Aiden. This time, the corvid scratched and fluttered at the undead creature facing the tall ranger, trying to divert its attention for long enough so that the ranger could get in clean blows. (Aid Another for +2 to Aiden's attacks on V, roll = 17, Success!) The idea worked--the creature turned its attention to the raven for just long enough to expose itself to attack.
NOTE TO DMs: please let us know before it gets too dark for the humans to see. Bohdi has low-light vision, of course, and so can therefore presumably see longer as it grows darker, but he'll want to cast his Light spell before the combat is impacted. If that means he has to delay his little Prestidigitation trick this round and cast Light instead, so be it--he'll cast Light on his enchanted dagger, which he still holds.
Aiden did attempt to again swing his axe against the creature, bringing a diagonal blow, and then with a slight step to the side (ooc: to work towards that flank that Bohdi yelled), he tries to follow up with the other head of the axe for a secondary strike.
However, taking a side step and attacking with the orken axe did not seem to agree.
As the rope burns effortlessly Frigg'isa tries to judge the perfect time to launch the oil. As she focuses and concentrates, her brother's yell startles her into action.
As a reflexive response to the shout from Nauth, Frigga's arm snaps into action and flings the oil at the zombie which Nauth was attacking.
Frigga bites her lip in the split second that it flies through the air, hoping that her aim is true. She instinctively reaches for her waterskin in case it is not. ============== A-12 (w/ Bless) this is a close one guys. Damage-if it hits, you can roll for damage as I know not how to figure it out.
Bohdi (ooc, clarifications) Thursday May 12th, 2005 10:30:20 AM ooc: Actually, Aiden's second roll (above) should be a 10, not a 12. It's my fault. I indicated in my post that Squork's "Aid Another" would add +2 to his "attacks," plural. In fact, it adds +2 to his "next attack," singular. Subtracting that +2 nets a 10.
Here's the language from the SRD:
In melee combat, you can help a friend attack or defend by distracting or interfering with an opponent. If you're in position to make a melee attack on an opponent that is engaging a friend in melee combat, you can attempt to aid your friend as a standard action. You make an attack roll against AC 10. If you succeed, your friend gains either a +2 bonus on his next attack roll against that opponent or a +2 bonus to AC against that opponent's next attack (your choice), as long as that attack comes before the beginning of your next turn. Multiple characters can aid the same friend, and similar bonuses stack.
... and, actually, reading that, it was never clear to me before that the Aid Another should be an "attack roll," i.e., presumably adding the character's MAB. Justin, DanielK, what do you think? Is Aid Another a straight d20 (what I've been doing) or add MAB? (One consequence--no more aiding another if not actually in melee, i.e., no aiding Bohdi's AC against ranged attacks.)
And, as long as I'm being the answer man:
Oil
A pint of oil burns for 6 hours in a lantern. You can use a flask of oil as a splash weapon. Use the rules for alchemist's fire, except that it takes a full round action to prepare a flask with a fuse. Once it is thrown, there is a 50% chance of the flask igniting successfully.
You can pour a pint of oil on the ground to cover an area 5 feet square, provided that the surface is smooth. If lit, the oil burns for 2 rounds and deals 1d3 points of fire damage to each creature in the area.
Alchemist's Fire You can throw a flask of alchemist's fire as a splash weapon. Treat this attack as a ranged touch attack with a range increment of 10 feet.
A direct hit deals 1d6 points of fire damage. Every creature within 5 feet of the point where the flask hits takes 1 point of fire damage from the splash. On the round following a direct hit, the target takes an additional 1d6 points of damage. If desired, the target can use a full-round action to attempt to extinguish the flames before taking this additional damage. Extinguishing the flames requires a DC 15 Reflex save. Rolling on the ground provides the target a +2 bonus on the save. Leaping into a lake or magically extinguishing the flames automatically smothers the fire.
The darkening cloud does not dim the crevace floor to the point of anyone being in danger of visual troubles. More like a really thick cloudy day. Snow starts to lightly descend, large, overly large really, flakes drift down.
Garret steps into Nauthiz'Ull's opponent and cleaves his sword from collarbone to navel. Revealing frozen innards and spraying the area with ice crystals of blood. The creature turns with a bone snapping and smiles at the cleric. The Short sword in its hand swings out level in Garrets direction...
Aiden still shaken by the undead, misses with his double blade axe.
Bohdi draws forth second flask and alters it to mimic the oil flask Frigga'Isa has and fills it with water, for reason known only to the gnome. (email coming)
Squork flaps about, but the milky white frozen visage of the creature seems not to care.
Nauthiz'Ull steps back and Frigg'Isa sends the burning flask in. However her aim is wide and it sails wide. (-4 firing into melee. Garret and the zombie are in melee) See map for location.
The short sword swipes across Garret's chest resounding with contact with the chainmail, Garret is unharmed.
The club rips in towards Aiden, connecting with a glancing blow to his shoulder. [Hit AC 16 Dmg 4]
In the distance, the other two undead turn and with a cry of frozen revenge begin to stagger back towards the group.
Bohdi stayed well back of flashing swords and flying flasks of flaming oil. This had all become a bit too frenetic for his tastes. "Gah!" was all the gnome would say.
He took a moment to retrieve his crossbow from the spot at his feet where he had dropped it previously, and focused the rest of his attention on the liquid inside the magically altered flask. Could he do it? Could he manage to transmute the water into oil? Then, with an exasperated sigh, he gave up trying and dismissed the transmutation effect on the flask. "I can't seem to get the chemical composition right. Bugger all!" Instead, the gnome tucked the crossbow away and kept his enchanted daggger ready.
The large odd flakes continue to fall from the sky, and it is becoming obvious it is not snow. The flakes are thick and grey, as they touch the icey ground they seem to melt the snow slightly before freezing again, leaving a black mark. Currently it is as if a light snow is falling.
Bohdi keeps his enchanted dagger at the ready.
Aiden whirls his axe about striking twice, each blow would have cut deeply were it not for the frozen flesh. Nauthiz'Ull moves to help Aiden and slices into the frozen undead, but the ice like skin turns his blade away.
Garret's weapon strikes hard, crystalline dust that was once blood sprays through the air about him. The creature falls headless to the ground.
Frigg'Isa scoops the still lit and miraculously unbroken flask and hurls it at last creature engaged with her family. It strikes and splashes burning oil across the creature.
The man of ice, again swings the frozen club at Aiden. The valiant efforts of Squork do not seem to deter it's single mindedness of the task and again the club delivers a deep bruising blow to his upper shoulder
None of his own skills had proven effective in combating the ice creatures--he couldn't even manage to conjure oil that could deliver lasting burns!--and his prepared spells for the day were largely exhausted. With a sigh, Bohdi chanted the words, "presto ensorcelsior revelorum, (Detect Magic)" and the now-familiar spectacle rune covered his eyes, granting him the vision to see enchantments all around the battlefield. He scanned the bodies of the fallen ice wights in particular, and those of the two left remaining as well. Garret's long sword rips the foul creature in half toppling it unmoving to the ground. The cleric of Domi then moves out to protect Frigga'Isa.
Aiden moves up to complete the line and awaits the two creatures lumbering in.
Bohdi casts Detect Magic. Unfortunately, the mindless undead are outside the realm of illusionist magics. At first visual, there does not seem to be any magic on the battlefield. Nauthiz'Ull moves to stand next to his sister, blade at the ready.
The two suddenly lurk forward in quick steps. One, with a staff in hand takes a powerful swing at Nauthiz'Ull, but the ranger nimbly ducks the blow.
Nauth grits his teeth tighter and tightens his grip of the scimitar. A stroke of pure metalic determination arcs towards the undead...taking its mark with a bite of bitterness. A-19 D-12 (d8(6)+2=8 x1.5(2handed)=12)
"Come on now, flanking positions, people, flanking positions!" Bohdi coughed--the falling acrid snow was getting the better of him--sounding much like a coxswain in a scull, and proving equally as ineffective in the matter at hand. Bohdi scanned the bodies of the ice wights and the battlefield using his spell to detect magic (Spot 7), but if there were anything of magical or other significance, it was lost on him.
Maintaining his concentration on the Detect Magic spell, Bohdi stepped closer (20') to prove of whatever ineffective assistance he could. He continued to scan the field and their opponents--including the fallen--for any sign of magical influence.
Squork stayed close to Aiden, flapping and pecking at the undead creature to better guide Aiden's next blow (Aid Another to add +2 to Aiden's next attack, 22 = success).
DMs please note: I had written this post neglecting to roll the FORT saves. Bohdi failed (Save 8), so the penalties apply to his skills, saves, attacks, etc. Squork saved (Save 20)--no penalty.
The slight panic within Frigga died as the undead charged at her brother instead of her. This feeling expounded into a greater sense of depression as she realized what her thoughts were saying.
Bohdi moves closer and takes a harder look at the fallen men and a small animal bladder catches his eye, the presence of magic.
Aiden whips the double axe about and lands two solid blows. One digs in, splaying open the head, parts of the frozen skull and wisps of hair fly to the wind, but the creature seems to care little. The other slides off the icey exterior of the dead man.
Frigg'Isa moves to set up a flanking position and thrusts forward hard with her dagger. The blade, however, simply does not have enough power behind it to penetrate the frozen body of her target.
Nauthiz'Ull lifted by his sisters courage plunges his sword into the things chest. The blade bites deeply but the man's face splits into a twisted hate filled smile and brings the quarterstaff to the young ranger's own chest in a powerful thrust.
Garret's swing tears a mighty gash in the creature, frozen organs spill to the ash covered ice. The creature smiles at the sight and launches an ice encrusted fist towards the cleric.
With a last second twist, Nauthiz'Ull allows his own armor to deflect the staff harmlessly to the side.
Garret feels the supernatural cold and the air move as the fist whisks inches from his ear.
Bohdi caught his breath and wrapped his fur muffle, usually used for the cold, across his mouth and nose to protect himself from the acrid gray snow.
"Hmmm ...." Bohdi pondered at the sight of something magical in the fallen ice wight's possession. The fight was all but forgotten--"Oh, Frigg'Isa, be a dear and step forward there to flank both of the creatures. Garrett, you step forward too, will you? There's a good chap"--as the gnome moved to stand over the strange, apparently enchanted bladder. What was it? (Focus Detect Magic on bladder; Spellcraft, if applicable = 20.)
Aiden looked at his double bladed axe as it was starting to dawn upon him that perhaps...just perhaps...the gods were cursing his weapon. Why would they do so? He had not defeated an enemy by himself during the rite....and obviously, he had failed his first adulthood trials when he first tried to raid Ice Peaks.
He would once again attempt to strike with the blade. His tentativeness with the cursed blade reflected with an awful attack. The second follow up strike did hit the creature,
Bohdi moves closer to the small animal bladder. It seems to be capped, almost as if to hold a small amount of liquid. The magic is Faint and Transmutaional in nature.
Nauthiz'Ull brings the scimitar down in a deadly arc and cleaves the remaining skull in half. The weapon continues its path coming to rest deep in the chest of the undead. To the rangers horror the things arms start to grasp for the blade to try and remove it.
Aiden's axe slices through the foul creature moments later and it topples to the ground.
Garret's long sword fails to penetrate, as the cleric shifts to his off foot to acquire a slight advantage in his defenses.
Frigg'Isa thrusts again with her dagger, but her mind is questing for the answer to this 'snow'. It is nothing like she has ever seen or even has heard of in stories of the old women when she hid in the shadows of the fire late at night and listened to them talk. Something though deep in her mind screams of warnings and danger, something is terribly wrong and she knows she has a connection now. Perhaps it is as the old woman said. One day the Vein will reach out and touch your mind as it has mine. Welcome it, embrace it and understanding shall be yours.
The frozen horror swings again at Garret, but again falls short of the mark.
Much to the gnome's regret, the enchanted bladder of liquid would have to wait until later. Holding his enchanted dagger forward, Bohdi crossed to Garrett's side (Q6). "Let's finish this!" he cried, thrusting his dagger forward to help guide Garrett's blow. (Aid Another, +2 to Garrett's next attack, = 7 -- fails, unless the dagger's enchantment brings the attack to 10 or greater) Bohdi's efforts were unavailing, however--he was of no more use with a dagger than he was with a crossbow.
Squork darted over to help as well (to Q4). The raven pecked and raked at the sole remaining undead monstrosity. (Aid Another, +2 to Garrett's next attack, = 10 when including Bless, success!)
"Come on!" the gnome urged the others. "Move in and surround this creature!" The gnome gave way as if to allow any of the larger folk to slip by him and attack from the same position.
Bohdi leaves the magical mystery for a later and moves to Garrets' right in an attempt to Aid the cleric in striking down the undead abomination.
Nauthiz'Ull moves up to engage the last foe, but with building fire in his eyes and throat start to effect his prowess. The scimitar skids off the ice with a high pitched reverberating ring.
Aiden moves to assist in the final creatures destruction, his axe lays open a nice wound in its side.
Garret thrusts with his sword, but it slides off harmlessly.
Frigg'Isa jabs her dagger and again it does not have the power sufficient to penetrate the ice like carapace of the undead man.
The Bevroren Doden, 'Frozen Dead', again slams it's fist towards Garret. This time it connects squarely into the young clerics chest.
