The Battle for Strongwind Castle

DM Bob & Carla
Monday May 2nd, 2005 11:36:32 PM

Caerthon turns from the stairs, and looks to the stone wall with the large shield bearing lettering.

Rest, souls of the Honoured dead,
Who wept not when they faced the End.
Rest in the silent Catacombs,
A worthy hallow'd home.

Until, summon'd in time of need,
By one Pure of heart, True in word
and Fair in deed.

With a sigh, Caerthon ascends the stairs, speaking to Lorth as the paladin files behind him. "Some say it is just a myth told by veterans of the wars, that in some time of direst need, the spirits of those who have passed on to the realm of shadows would be permitted by Lord Gargul to return and fight one last time." Before the older man can continue, there is a series of deep booming sounds, of ascending volume, followed by a fiery flash and a lingering red glow.

+++++

In the courtyard, Harvest Moon reaches a conclusion and shares her thoughts with Bralin. Despite her magics, the small monk is unable to make much progress in the crowd. The suspicious dwarf steps in front of wagon, stopping its progress. The two guards, catching sight of the blue badge snap to attention. A young boy points at Bralin, announcing, "Look ma! He's with the WLA! He must be a hero!" before he is unceremoniously pulling into the crowd by his parent. A small circle forms around the dwarf as folks back away from the commotion. It is quickly filled by Andrath, Ashalan, Villemus, and Merryn. Arminus, unnoticed, looks down directly on the driver of the wagon from his position on the wall.

Before another move is made, there is a series of deep booming sounds, of ascending volume, followed by a fiery flash in the sky. Fire and stars fill the sky and the billowing smoke takes on an eerie red glow.

With one movement, a half dozen of the watchers along the wall stand, pushing back hoods, and throwing back capes. There is movement in the crowd as some move suddenly with some unknown purpose. Weapons are drawn. A woman screams.

(OOC: Harvest and Lorth can reach the general area of the party after 1 round. Please post AC, HP, and active spells.)

Lorth AC 19, HP 45
Tuesday May 3rd, 2005 7:49:01 AM

Lorth follows Caerthon up the stair, then back out into the crowd. When Lorth hears the explosion and sees that the attack has commenced he draws his sword, readies his shield and quickly starts to make his way back to his friends. He continues on this path unless he sees unarmed townfolk being attacked, if he does he stops to help them.

Harvest (AC22, AC24 vs Evil, HP 28/28)  d20+9=25
Tuesday May 3rd, 2005 1:14:45 PM

Harvest looks skyward. Too late!

Where to? The gate!!! The gate.

Harvest reverses course, heading back toward the gate. As she wends her way through the crowd, the brown girl turns her head this way and that, hoping for a glimpse of the bejeweled Reeve. (Spot 25)

As she goes, the spiked chain rolls from her pack and into her hand. For the briefest of moments, Harvest stops. Calling upon the Unsleeping God, she cloaks herself in a spell to ward against Evil.

Tuesday May 3rd, 2005 4:29:43 PM

Looking down at the driver, Arminas is amused at the sight of the dwarf standing in front of a team of oxen. Which would prove stronger or more stubborn awaits to be seen.

As the night erupts in noise and light, Arminas huddles into his elven cloak. Glancing along the wall, he is alarmed to see 6 figures stand and throw back their cloaks. Arminas attempts to glance back down at the driver and then back along the wall. Where is the greater danger?

Remaining unseen for a moment longer may prove useful.

Ashalan (AC 17, AC 19 vs. Dodge, HP 22/22)  d20+3=21 d20+3=21
Tuesday May 3rd, 2005 4:48:24 PM

Darkwood staff clenched tightly in both hands, Ashalan stands ready.

Seeing that danger could come from more than one location, Ash tries to position himself equidistant from the cart, the men on the wall, and the crowd behind him. Trying hard to keep all three in his view, listening for an order of attack. (Spot: 21 , Listen: 21)

Having faith in his companions, yet not knowing them well enough to be acquainted with their various fighting styles, Ash waits in a defensive crouch, (-4 att, +2 dodge to AC) prepared to spring into action.

Merryn AC 17 HP 25/25  d20+6=16 d20+4=10 d6+1=2
Tuesday May 3rd, 2005 7:08:39 PM

Merryn, seeing the source of the disturbance in the crowd, rushes forward to engage, endeavouring to spot the malefactors (Spot: 16). If he sees one of the dread, he will attack (AC 10 for 2).

Bralin (ac 21, hp 45/45, Divine Favor 1/10)
Tuesday May 3rd, 2005 8:31:14 PM

The time for sublety has ended.

"CLOSE THE GATE!" Bralin roars at the two guards.

The dwarf takes the time to call on the power of The Chamber to help smite his enemies. If no one is moving toward the workings of the gate by then, he hurries toward them himself.

Otherwise, he'll wait for some fool to fall within reach of his axe.

[Divine Favor: +1 luck bonus to hit and damage]

Villemus (AC 18, HP 36/26, Mage Armor, False Life)  d20+8=24 d20+6=23
Tuesday May 3rd, 2005 10:29:22 PM

Unslinging his great darkwood scythe, Villemus looked warily for the agents among the crowd, trying to determine what is their plan of action.

The half-drow alerts his companions on whatever he notices and tries to fade among the crowds, making his way towards to ambush the agents.

"Some of us got to stop them from whatever they are planning...", Villemus whispered harshly as he pointed at the malefactors he spotted. "I am going after them, who's with me?"

Rolls
Spot: 24
Hide: 23

OOC

Villemus will try to convince 1 or more of his companions who are good at sneaking (probably Ash or Andrath) to go with him to ambush the agent among the crowd. If they are a bunch within 15 feet of each other, Villemus will cast a Color Spray: Will DC 15, else he will engage in close combat. If he notice any particularly powerful looking enemy (like a leader), he will cast Blindness: Fort DC 16 at him before engaging.

If no one accompany Villemus, he will still go after the ones in spotted, but will not attack or make himself known until he realise what they are trying to do. And if worthed it, Villemus will stop they at all cost, even if it mean fighting alone.

DM Bob & Carla  5d6(2+3+2+2+2)=11
Tuesday May 3rd, 2005 11:32:02 PM

Pandemonium breaks loose in the courtyard of Strongwind Castle. One of the guards stationed at the front gates in the middle of the eastern wall falls dead, an arrow piercing his breast. The second guard manages to release the portcullis just before the wagon master sends him sprawling unconcious from a heavy boot to the face. The iron gate crashes down onto the wagon leaving three or more feet of room beneath it.

Bralin is jostled by the flowing crowds as many of the local citizens try to flee past him through the partially open gate. [Dex check vs 17 to maintain your footing] The wagonmaster bellows out "Take them now!" from his perch atop the wagon and waves a large club wildly about his head.

From the southern and eastern walls a heavy stream of arrows flies into the courtyard. Many of the garrison fall before they can draw their weapons. Two of the intruders spot Arm above the gate and approach him, longswords drawn.

Five of the Strongwind guards fight a holding action against more than a dozen attackers at the top of the stairs leading to the Great Keep in the northeastern quadrant of the castle. As Lorth emerges from the bottom of the southeast tower with Caerthon, he witnesses a bolt of lightning fly from somewhere above him and three of the guard at the top of the stairs fall to the ground.

Villemus, Ashalan, Andrath and Merryn watch in horror as the insurgents reveal their true intent, but before they can pursue, a small ball of fire hurtles into the courtyard from the roof of the keep itself, blossoming upon impact with the courtyard and spreading 20 feet in all directions. [Andrath, Villemus, Ashalan, and Merryn make reflex saves vs. DC 17 to take only 5 dmg]

Harvest races towards the gate, weaving between the panicked citizenry when the fireball strikes home. She can feel the burst of heat warm her face, and her eyes take a moment to recover from the flash. A glint of steel catches her eye as a cloaked half-elf approaches Villemus from the north. The reeve is nowhere to be found.

A map is on the way.

Lorth AC 19, HP 45
Wednesday May 4th, 2005 7:49:15 AM

Lorth takes in the situation, it looks grave, it seems to him that the garrison is way outnumbered and surely more dread will arrive soon, we sorely need help he thinks.

Caerthon's words still ring in his head, "in some time of direst need... return and fight one last time.", the legend? Could it be true? Could he be so bold to think that perhaps he could summon this help? Certainly he is true in word, and had always tried to be fair in deed, but pure in heart? Is his heart pure enough?

Lorth makes up his mind there are innocent villagers dying all around him, there is no choice, I must try. "Go ahead, I'll be back in a moment.", he yells to Caerthon.

Lorth turns and runs back to the shield hanging on the wall, he kneels and clears his head. "Lord Gargul please hear me in this time of need, innocents are dying before their time." He looks to the words on the shield and begins chanting...

"Rest, souls of the Honoured dead,
Who wept not when they faced the End.
Rest in the silent Catacombs,
A worthy hallow'd home.

Until, summon'd in time of need,
By one Pure of heart, True in word
and Fair in deed."

and adds...

"Hero's of old and the dread wars, hear my plea. That which you have fought for is dying above me. I will go and right these injustices until my last breath, I pray Lord gargul will allow you one last time to fight for what you beleive in!"

When he is done Lorth jumps to his feet, hoping but not waiting to see if his plea worked he starts back up the corridor. He must return to his friends he has left them long enough...

Harvest (AC22, AC24 vs Evil, HP 28/28)  d20+9=24
Wednesday May 4th, 2005 11:13:34 AM

Enemies appear all along the wall, sending both magic and arrows down upon them. There are few at the gate, and little wonder why. They clearly intend to keep the area around the front gate open by raining down death from above.

How to get up to the wall???

Harvest glances around the exposed courtyard, her eyes wild.

Or, a better question ... Where would the Reeve be?

In the Great Keep!

"Bralin Stoneminder!" Harvest whispers, urgency coloring her voice. "I go to the Great Keep. The Reeve may be within. There may also be a way up to the walls from there."

With those short words, the little monk sprints toward the Great Keep and up the stairs. From behind the Stormwind Guards she strains to see what might lie beyond.

Rolls and Actions

Ashalan (AC 17, HP 12 (after fireball)/22  d20+7=14 d20+6=17 d4+2=6
Wednesday May 4th, 2005 12:23:54 PM

His attention divided in so many directions, Ashalan does not see the fireball arc down from the top of the keep and the blast catches him full (Reflex Save: 14). His howl of pain fills the courtyard as the flames wash over him.

The flames subside and Ash opens his eyes, ignoring his scorched skin and the wisps of smoke rising from his clothes. From the corner of his eye he sees the small monk rushing for the keep.

Aye, the lass has the right of it, that mage must be stopped!

However, assessing his own weakened state, Ash decides that he is in no shape to rush headlong into battle, that instead his role will be one of support.

Ash moves toward corner created by the smithy and the wall, hoping that between the two he will have some cover from the archers above. His eyes scanning the wall for a way up top, he removes his sling from his belt pouch and readies it for action.

Spotting the half-elf approaching Villemus (F1), Ash whirls the stout leather sling above his head and lets loose the bullet (Hits AC 17, Dam: 6), hoping the stone flies true.

Bralin (ac 21, hp 45/45, Divine Favor 2/10)  d20=2 d20=2 d20+4=13
Wednesday May 4th, 2005 12:24:05 PM

Bralin can't keep his feet, and finds himself getting swept up by the crowd fleeing the courtyard.
[Dex 2]

Harvest whispers a plan, but the dwarf is way too occupied to pay attention.

Staying down on all fours, the warrior attempts to go with the throng. At some point, this should put him near the wagon. And when that happens, Bralin uses his strength and low center of gravity in an attempt to plow a path and get under the wagon.
[Dex 2, Str 13]

Merryn AC 17 HP 15/25  d20+3=10 d20+5=10 d6+4=6
Wednesday May 4th, 2005 4:10:19 PM

Merryn takes the full brunt of the blast, trying to muffle his scream of agony (Ref. Save: 10). Enraged, Merryn thinks, How does the saying go? Fight fire with fire? Merryn takes a moment to chant the words and make the gestures and then his right hand erupts in flame (Produce Flame: 4 min.) Looking to his right, Merryn spots an archer atop the wall and lets fly one of the fireballs (AC 10 for 6 DMG).

Arminas (AC 22, HP 25/25)
Wednesday May 4th, 2005 6:38:02 PM

Arminas looks at the two fighters running towards him, and decides that now is the time for quick action. He touches his white seal afixed to his cloak.

Thanks be to Alemi!

Reaching into his belt pouch he pulls out the potion of haste that he has stored for quick retrival. Hoping that he is quick enough, he pulls the stopper and chugs the liquid.

Tossing the bottle to the side, he draws his sword.

OOC: White seal gives +3 AC to all party members for 1 turn, and activation is a free action.

Villemus (AC 18, HP 31/26, Mage Armor, False Life)  d20+6=18 d20+13=24 d20+9=19
Wednesday May 4th, 2005 11:04:17 PM

As the magical flames faded away, a slightly smoking but unhurt Villemus stood up and complained, "Hey, fireworks belong in the sky, ye know!"

And as the half-elf approached, the drow necromancer made a face and said, "Sorry pal, I am kinda busy at the moment." Villemus retreated from the warrior and made his way towards the shadows of the barrack.

"I am going to get rid of the pesky wizard!", the half drow shouted to his friends before suddenly halting and incanted a harsh inhuman syllabus, his eyes upon the distant wizard to the north.

OOC
With his scythe still in one hand, Villemus move 30 feet diagonally towards the barrack (move action). Then he cast "Blindness" at the wizard to the north (standard action).

Villemus intend to move to the shadows of the buildings near the barrack to be use as cover against archers at the south wall.

Thursday May 5th, 2005 12:29:25 AM

The Dread fighters atop the stairs leading to the keep savage the remaining Strongwind guards and make their way inside. Three stay outside on the landing to face down the approaching monk [OOC: sorry for not including them on the last map -- didn't anticipate you pursuing them so soon]. Seeing the monk's precarious position, Caerthon runs to her aide, managing to reach the bottom of the stairs, his sword drawn and ready. A heavily armored man appears in the doorway brandishing a particularly wicked looking longsword. The sound of fighting behind him rings through the open doorway.

Bralin manages to roll with the flow of bodies until he finds himself beneath the wagon and out of immediate harms way. Ashalan, seared by the flames, moves into cover and prepares his sling [moved more than 40 feet therefore no attack last round]. A smoldering Merryn hurls a ball of fire at A1 but misses badly, however Andrath's arrow catches the archer in the shoulder and sends him spinning into the stone wall of the battlements [Archers AC=17]. Hugo and Langdon react at once to the rogue's command and sprint to the southwest tower and the stairs that must surely lead to the upper walls.

Villemus backs away from the threatening half-elf that he ran across earlier in the evening and casts a spell at the dread mage atop the keep. The effect is instantaneous; the mage puts his hands to his eyes and cries out in rage and anguish. Blinded he stumbles and falls screaming from his lofty perch to the stone courtyard below. The sound of impact is clearly audible to those in the courtyard, a wet, sickening thump.

Arminus prepares himself for battle against the approaching intruders, both of whom leap forward to engage him in combat along the upper wall. Whether as a result of the seal or the potion, the ranger manages to parry the blades of both men [Hit AC=21 and 10].

Another hail of arrows flies from the battlements, A1 spends a round pulling the arrow from his shoulder, but A2 takes dead aim on Andrath and the arrow grazes across the rogues cheek [Hit AC=25 for 1HP drat!] Arrows from A3 and A4 come perilously close to Villemus but the effect of Arminus' seal save the necromancer from injury [Hit AC=18 & 19]. A6 and A7 take aim on Caerthon as he approaches the stairs but their arrows clatter harmlessly off the steps. [Hit AC=8 and 12]. The half-elf on the ground (F1) abandons his attack on Villemus and instead stabs his rapier ineffectually at Merryn (Hit AC=9).

The remaining mage (D1) in the southeast tower makes his way north along the upper wall to provide support to those guarding the entrance to the keep. The wagonmaster, his job now done, slips beneath the iron teeth of the portcullis and disappears into the night.

Lorth races down to the catacombs and kneels before the stone shield. The paladin begs Gargul's favor, turns and runs back the way he came, completely unaware of the eerie glow emanating from the shield itself. As Lorth climbs the stairs, two at a time, the blue-green light fills the catacombs, spreading from chamber to chamber, washing over the remains of heroes long dead and forgotten.

Villemus (AC 18, HP 31/26, Mage Armor, False Life)
Thursday May 5th, 2005 2:45:42 AM

"Hey! Watch where you are shooting at!", the drow taunted as he narrowly avoided the two deadly arrows.

Villemus took a moment to peek around, and slung his scythe when he saw no one is going to engage him in melee.

"I am going after the last mage and support Harvest! Be well!", Villemus shouted to his friends, unslinging his great bow as he dashed into the comforting shadows of the barrack walls.

"Gargul watches...", the un-wizardy-like necromancer whispered to himself as he made his way towards dread mage. "I hope he doesn't notice us...", Bone squeaked from his hiding place somewhere.

OOC
Villemus sheathes his scythe (move action) and move another 30 feet diagonally towards the barracks (move action). He draws his longbow as he made his dash (free action combined with a move). He will be using the barrack wall/roof as cover against the archers at the southern walls.

He comes from the entryway, dressed in dark armor, with the same cast as the one who struck her before in the Crimson Fort: A Blackguard.

Harvest Moon's eyes narrow. She pulls down into herself becoming smaller still than she actually is.

"YOU! GO! LEAVE! NOW!" she shouts, tension bleeding from her voice.

Then she remembers the scroll. Still in her hand. She had not been quick enough to halt the fireworks, but the scroll might still server here. Letting the lower dowel roll free, the little brown monk holds the scroll in one hand, reading quickly and intoning the words. A pall of mist rises up from around her, cloaking her form, moving outward to catch the foremost fighters in it's leading edge.

Then she creeps 20 feet to the south, down the stairs to just within the limits of her cloud of mist. The spiked chain comes into her hand as she goes. And just within the protection of the mist she stops. Listening. Waiting for her foes to approach.

His attack misses, yet with an unexpected quickness, his blade flips forward and catches the fighter with a small cut to the arm.

From the shadows of the smithy Ashalan has a much better view of the chaos before him.

Not much chance for me to get up on that wall... what, NO!

Ash sees Harvest rushing up the stairs of the keep toward the three assailants and the wicked looking blackguard. He hears the small monk's shouted command before the area is swathed in a white mist.

She cannot face those odds alone, I must aid her!

Setting his sights on the last spot he saw Harvest, Ash sprints from the shadows toward the Keep, keeping to the edge of the large building hoping it will provide him with cover from above.

Leaping the body of the fallen mage Ashalan takes up position to the northwest of the bottom step of the stairs, just on the edge of the magical mist. Searching and listening intently for any sign of his comrades or his enemies. (Spot: 8,Listen: 16)

Launching himself toward the elf, the dwarf takes a quick look right and left to see if he can spot the mechanism to raise and lower the porticullis. He's certain that knowledge will soon be needed.

Bralin thunders toward F1, axe drawn.

Deep in the catacombs, the blue-green light continues to envelop the remains of those interred there, encasing each of the corpses in a translucent coat of armor, complete with shield and weapon. One by one, the dead rise from their resting places and form ranks in the cavernous space beneath the castle.

Hugo and Langdon arrive at the top of the circular stairway that runs along the inside wall of the southwest tower. Out of breath, their legs aching from the exertion, they manage to draw their weapons but cannot assist Arminus this round. The cornered elf's two aggressors (F2 & F3) continue to press their attack. The first sword manages to slip through, cutting into Arminus' side [Hit AC=23 for 10 HP], but the elf manages to deflect the seconds blade before it can strike home. The lone archer near the tower (A4) releases yet another black-fletched arrow, this time at Merryn, but the arrow goes high and skips of the stone pavement behind F1. On the other side of the main gate, a second archer (A5) sights the dwarf coming to Merryn's assistance and lets fly with an arrow to similar effect. The three archers on the south wall release their arrows in unison. Two of the arrows miss badly, but the third pierces Andrath's shoulder, the head driving clean through to the other side [Hit AC=27, Nat 20 for 4 HP]

The two archers on the roof of the keep loose their arrows at Caerthon, striking him once [Hit AC=24 for 4 HP] while the lone mage on the eastern wall gesticulates with his hands and mumbles an incantation.

The blackguard calls out from his position in front of the massive double doors that lead into the keep, "Hold them here while we finish our business inside, reinforcements will arrive soon". He spins on his heels and disappears into the keep, drawing the doors closed behind him. The three armed warriors take up a defensive position on the landing and await an attack from within the bank of mist.

... while we finish our business inside ...

"Bralin Stoneminder," Harvest whispers to the dwarf via her spell. Then she changes her mind.

"The Dread have evil business within the Great Keep." she shouts at the top of her lungs. "There is evil within the Great Keep."

And then she moves. Sprinting up the stairs, Harvest comes out of the mist to view the scene. It is as she half feared and half hoped for. The Blackguard is gone. But the door is now closed to them.

Moving with extraordinary speed, she scurries to the wall to come around the row of fighters. As she goes, she draws a scroll. Then, inching in toward the door before they know what is happening, Harvest Moon casts a spell upon herself, growing in size til she towers over the three fighters.

"YOU. GO. NOW." she cries again. But a small girl, despite her new size, is still no more than a small girl, and perhaps all the more ridiculous for the incongruity of her size. It seems unlikely that the three will find her intimidating.

None the less, she stands ready chain in hand.

Bralin missed!, Merryn is struck with worry for his dwarven companion, but he quickly comes to his senses. Judging from our sparring session earlier, he will not miss a second time!

Diverting his attention from F1 for a moment, Merryn turns and looks up at the Archers on the castle wall (A1, A2, A3). He lets fly another fireball at A1, missing terribly once again. Cursing himself once again, Merryn runs around to the other side of F1, intending to help Bralin in the next round.

The battle in the courtyard continues in chaos. Hugo charges forward at the archer (A4) targeting those on the courtyard below. The paladin lowers his shoulder as he makes contact and ploughs the man over the edge of the parapet to his death. His twisted body lies in a small pool of blood on the cobblestones below the gate turret. Langdon seizes the opportunity and races by to support the beleaguered Arminus but the narrow walkway and twisted route prevent him from reaching the elf this round.

Caerthon runs up the stairs to engage the blackguard's minions on the landing but his blade is slow and easily turned aside by F12 [Hit AC=12]. Ashalan runs into the obscuring mist, and disappears from sight.

The archer above the smithy (A5) looses another arrow at Bralin but misjudges and the arrow flies high [Hit AC=8]. The two archers atop the keep cannot help but notice the small brown female double in size, and both take dead aim. [Hit AC=26 and 10 for 5 dmg]. From his position atop the western wall, the dread mage watches the persistent monk slip behind the guards and enlarge. Fully aware of the threat she poses, he begins to cast magic missile when an arrow slams him into the wall. Focusing his mind, he continues the spell [Concentration =25] and three bolts of energy fly from his finger tips and arc downward into the enlarged monk [10 HP dmg]. [OOC Mages AC=17; mage armour].

The three fighters at the top of the stairs defend the doorway to the keep. F10 and 13 step towards Harvest Moon with obvious trepidation and hack at the monk, only to encounter har spiked chain. Both men have their swords ripped from their hands. The third guard swings on Caerthon, hitting down on the paladin as he climbs the stairs, his longsword glancing off Caerthon's helm.[Hit AC=21]

Merryn hurls another ball of fire to the top of the south wall, but his aim is off and he does little to distract the archers from their business. Lorth runs flat out across the courtyard towards Bralin when he is caught in a hail of arrows from the south wall. Two of the arrows strike the paladin while the third plucks at his hair as it sails by [A1, A2, A3 hit AC=23, 21, 15 for 6+3 HP]. The half-elf sneers at Bralin as the dwarf's axe does not come close and stabs at the cleric with his rapier [Hit AC=22 for 8 dmg].

Deep in the catacombs a single ghostly paladin takes command of the shimmering host and begins leading them up the stairs in an orderly formation. He issues no verbal commands, but signals their advance with a simple gesture of his translucent greatsword.

"NOW YOU! RUN AWAY!" the pain of her injuries fuels the emotion in her voice. And, as Harvest Moon shouts at the unarmed fighters, she seems, if anything, less frightened now than angry.

Poised and ready to strike should the two fighter continue to show resistance, Harvest gives her attention to the man attacking Paladin Caerthon. Her spiked chain snakes out to grip the figher's weapon.

Harvest's shouts, Laced with pain and rage, pierce the fog, inciting Ash to action.

Leaping from the fog hoping to gain some measure of surprise, Ash flanks the swordsman attacking Caerthon. (F12) Unleashing a series of blows using fists, feet, knees and elbows, the strikes coming at an almost unimaginable speed. (Flurry of Blows: 2 attacks +1/+1, plus flanking +2 for each strike, total +3: hit AC 10, 5)

But with that speed comes inaccuracy and his blows have little effect on the armored attacker.

Cursing his impatience Ashalan readies to defend himself.

Confusion reigns in the yard as the battle rages around the Swords of Light . It is difficult to tell friend from foe as those who seemed mere farmers and inhabitants of the town take up arms. Neighbor against neighbor it would seem and here and there those bearing the insignia of the garrison fall back, and then with a terrible shout, a small group charges forward.

The youngest Flett son narrowly avoids Bralin's sharp axe as it whistles through the air. The half-elf lifts his rapier intent on retaliation. Weilding the sword of Jaradosta, the paladin lands a crushing blow, knocking the enemy to his knees. (F1 AC 20, 1 HP remaining). The archer on the wall lets out a howl of anguish when Merryn's fireball hits him squarely in the chest. His companion, slow to react, is struck by Andrath's arrow. The uninjured archer turns his attention to the skirmish in front of the wagon and looses an arrow, followed by two more from the wounded men. (A1 to Merryn hit AC 17, 4 pts dmg, A2 to Andrath misses, A3 to Lorth hit AC 20, 3 pts dmg) while the lone archer (A5) above the smithy targets the dwarf, and misses.

The man attacking Caerthon backs away, nearly crashing into Ashalan in his haste after having been disarmed by the chain wielding monk. Heeding the not-so-small girl's words, they flee to her right and left. The mage targets the larger than life monk once again, pointing a finger in her direction. The half-drow recognizes the combat spell, and looses his arrow. Hissing with pain when Villemus' arrow strikes true (Concentration check=26) the mage detonates a leathal explosion of flame upon the trio on the stair. (Harvest, Ashalan Reflex save vs DC 17 to take 9 pts dmg). Meanwhile the two archers on the keep (A6 and A7) take aim at Villemus. (Hit AC24+17(miss) for 5 pts dmg)

Arminus continues to defend himself, missing with his first blow, but connecting solidly with his second and sorely wounding his opponent. (Fighter AC=20) Langdon materializes at the wood elf's side and slashes at the nearest fighter (A3) cutting him deeply. Feeling pressed, the fighters strike out feebly missing both the elf and the paladin. (AC 9 and 17)

A loud booming noise sounds from high above Harvest, Ashalan and Caerthon. A red flare lights the sky. As the thunder of the signal recedes, a deep drumming from outside the gates takes its place. The sour note of a dour horn punctuates the aggressive sound of the drums. The enemy is at the gate!

(OOC: Harvest's Message spell to Bralin would be over at this point. Map to follow)

Harvest Moon heaves an almost visible sigh of relief as the new devotee of Alemi arrives and the fighters finally run off.

Then the world is filled with fire and light. When it is over, Harvest stands blinking. Whether from the speed of unconscious reflex, or the hand of divine intervention, Harvest Moon remains untouched by the conflagration.

Standing with no opposition, Harvest Moon thinks, What now? Drums beat outside the gate. The urgency of what is pending within the Great Keep beats with the speed of her heart. What business have they within?

And yet, if the gate should fall to the invaders would not all be lost?

"In your pursuit, you split our company. Had he allies, they gain the advantage by facing us one by one."

Bralin Stoneminder's words come back to her. She has erred again. She sees the bulk of the group at the gate. The wagon stands under the portcullis.

"I am sorry," she says to no one in particular. "I am sorry." She rushes between Caerthon and Ashalan and down the stairs. As Harvest hurries back across the courtyard, she draws a flask from her haversack. Perhaps something could be done about the wagon. She must at least try.

Seeing that an arrow in the gut was only a minor nuisance to the dread mage, Villemus took to extreme measures. "Hey dumb ass, over here! Wanna more arrows for supper!", the gutsy drow taunted the mage, as he tried to attract attention from his seriously wounded friend.

And before he could complete his sentence, a couple of arrows streak towards the tattooed elf. "Oh, this is real bad!", Bone squeaked before ducking into his hiding place again. One of the arrows barely kissed his pointed ears, while the other sank into his shoulder with a loud thud.

The slender drow staggered slightly from the impact, but soon straighten up and grinned at the archers - his pearly white teeth obvious against his dusky face. Villemus shrugged and pulled out the arrow from his shoulder - but no wound or blood was obvious.

Seemingly unharmed by the arrow, Villemus gave a shout and started towards where he last saw the half-elven monk. "Hang on, I am coming Ash!"

"Yeah, the arrows too. Look at where you are running dumb elf!", his skinny familiar squeaked in protest. "You are running right into the fighters!"

Villemus paused in the middle of the courtyard and kept his feet light, ready to dodge the arrows. Meanwhile, he kept his eyes on the mage, ready to treat the vile wizard another arrow for supper.

The two oxen strain futilely against the harness that binds them to the unmoving wagon. Their large eyes rolling wildly as Lorth, his sword stained red by the blood of his dead enemy stands before them. Bralin makes for the mechanism that controls the portcullis, calling for someone to move the wagon, as Harvest breathlessly returns to the fold, a flask in her hand. Andrath successfully targets an archer on the wall, but doesn't stop him or the other archers from peppering those in front of the gates with wild arrows. (all miss!)

Ashalan cries out piteously as he makes for the shelter of the door. "Do not enter," calls out Caerthon (Reflex save=18) who managed to avoid the worst of the fireball, "you know not what waits behind those doors." With his free hand, the paladin takes a vial from his belt and hands it to the half-elf. "Take this; it will make the pain bearable." (Ashalan roll 1d8+1 CLW to restore HP) Much to his familiar's chagrin, Villemus exposes himself as a target as he dashes across the yard towards his friend, zinging the mage with yet another well aimed arrow. He avoids the fighters, but takes two arrows from the archers. (Hit AC 25 and 21 for 7+1 pts dmg) The mage ducks out of view briefly, then reappears. (OOC: Villemus can make it to Ashalan this round.)

It takes two blows, but Arminus is able to dispatch his foe. Langdon attacks F3 (Hit AC for 11 pts dmg) opening a wound in the man's side. The fighter retaliates, striking the paladin (Hit AC 19, for 7 dmg). Hugo falls back towards an opening at the top of a stair, "we must join the others," and then he is gone into the darkness that leads downward.

Beyond the stone walls, in the dark, the enemy closes.

Tuesday May 10th, 2005 6:32:03 PM

Merryn pulls the arrow out of his shoulder, grunting with pain. At least I struck true. Lorth seems to have a good handle on the half-elf, but Merryn assists him to make sure the job is finished. The druid lashes out at the half-elf (f1) with his spear, hoping to score a hit in between the villain's ribs (AC 16 for 4 DMG). No mercy for the Dread ... Merryn then spins around trying to take in the positions of the other fighters.

"I told you so!", squeaked Bone from within the drow's hood.

"Yeah, yeah...", Villemus mumbled as he pulled out the bloody arrow and continued his mad dash to his even more seriously wounded companion.

After leaving a gory trail of blood from his arrow wound, Villemus finally reached Ash and placed his left palm upon the half-elf's most grevious wound. The necromancer uttered a holy word which triggered a small eruption of shimmering sparks. And when the sparks died off, it could be seen that the wound is now partially healed.

"I doesn't like eating arrows.", the leaking drow remarked as he tried to spot the wizard who stubbornly refused to die.

OOC
Sorry, I did not include the bonus from the white seal in all the prev posts, so all my AC shld be 3 pts higher, so the 2nd arrow actually did not hit Villemus as his actual AC is 23.

Lorth hears Bralin's statement and stays near the oxen ready to move them in a moments notice. He scans the area looking for an enemy to attack within range. Arrows rain down from above. Drums beat from without. The single image, however, that impresses upon the young monk's mind is that of the oxen, straining forward, straining to free themselves, or ... to pull the wagon in.

Rushing to the west side of the wagon, Harvest grasps the wheel and begins to push. Burning the wagon had been her first thought. But, with the pull from the oxen, this may be a better way.

The flask of alchemist's fire falls to the ground as she strains to move the cart.

"Help Me!" she shouts above the din. "Please, help me move the wagon!"

Rolls and Actions

Question
How much of a gap is there between the portculis and the ground. Would the invaders have to stoop to enter? And would there be AoO's against that?

West side of wagon. Will take AoO against any who approach within 10 feet. (Reach due to enlarged size.)

Ashalan (AC 20, HP 16/22)  d8+1=6 d20+6=21 d20+6=12
Wednesday May 11th, 2005 11:10:56 AM

Ashalan can barely hear the big paladin's words of caution over the pounding of his own heart, but the words sink in and he falls limply against the rough wooden door pausing to catch his breath.

Ash accepts the potion offered by Caerthon and quaffs it, the viscous liquid barely touching his lips as it makes its way down. (CLW: heal 6 HP)

The potion mending the worst of his burns, Ash pushes himself from the wall and meets Villemus making his way up the stairs. A plan forms in his head as he feels the warmth of the drow's healing magicks wash over him. (Heal 7 HP)

Seeing the courtyard quickly emptying of any real threat, their attention must be turned to the attackers upon the walls.

"Caerthon, help boost me up onto this roof. I need to get closer to that mage for my sling to be of any use. Villemus, cover me."

With that, Ash takes a quick running step up off of Caerthon's interlaced hands and jumps for the overhanging roof. (Jump: 21, Climb: 12)

Wednesday May 11th, 2005 10:29:29 PM

Above the din of battle a rumour, a shadow-sound of many feet upon the cobbles of the yard, and a low murmur as if many low voices.

Rest, souls of the Honoured dead,
Until, summon'd in time of need...

The blue-green of some glowing thing, like a fog, creeps over the yard from the main house and from the tower doors. Men, with pale banners like shreds of cloud. Ghostly soldiers armed with spears and swords of an ancient type moving with silent purpose towards the entry gates of Strongwind Castle.

After one last poke at the dead half-elf, Merryn notices several of the fighters have run away. The druid then spots the ghostly company emerging from the keep. Lorth takes hold of the harnessed oxen as Harvest presses against a wheel of the wagon. Andrath provides some measure of protection from the archers as he brings down his man. Bralin manipulates the mechanism that causes the portcullis to rise up. It resists momentarily, caught in the barrels atop the wagon, and then goes up. The oxen strain, then surge ahead pulling the wagon after them. (Lorth, Handle Animal check vs 18 to manage the frightened oxen, or Reflex Save vs 17 to avoid being trampled and taking 6+5 dmg).

Arminus does serious damage to the fighter and Langdon manages to finish him off (Hit AC 23, for 9 dmg), while Hugo waits at the base of the turret inside the yard.

Ashalan accepts Caerthon's potion and benefits from Villemus' healing touch. As the half-drow and paladin watch, the monk leaps up and is able to grab the trough that runs the length of the roof. Alas, he is unable to pull himself up and looses his grip, landing just under the overhang of the roof.

The archers continue to harry those below, hitting Merryn (5 dmg) and Lorth (4 dmg) while the mage moves back and forth atop the wall, trying to spot his quarry.

The expected surge of orcs doesn't materialize, and Bralin knows why. Standing just inside the gate and blocking the way is a bruitish looking humanoid of monstrous proportions.

Arminas give a nod of thanks to Langdon.

"Thanks, I would had been killed without your help. Now, lets follow Hugo as he suggested."

Arminas takes out his potion of CSW, and quickly pulls the cork and downs the contents. The liquid seems to cause a surge of energy through him, as the healing closes the deep wounds of the sword attacks.

Arminas then runs toward the turret and the waiting Hugo.

"You are still leaking.", the little tattooed rat squeaked, as he stared at the Villemus's gapping arrow wound.

"Yeah I know.", the drow shrugged as he drew a fresh arrow. Bone's whiskers twitched slightly, when the monk failed to scaled the roof.

Grinning manically, the drow bared his white teeth and prepared to shoot at the dread mage, "Eat arrow!"

But unfortunately, the arrow only glazed the robes of the foul wizard.

Lorth sees the gate go up and the oxen charge ahead, he instinctively tries to leap clear but fails and the oxen trample over him. Oxen's hooves and cart wheels are something Lorth decides he doesn't like and as he pulls himself free he groans in pain.
He tries to stand and slowly recovers his footing, looking around he sees the ghostly visages of the honored dead. "Praise Gargul", he recites, "It worked." A small sense of relief washes over him, he was true enough to call them, thank Gargul he thinks.
"These ghostly visages are the honored dead, in Gargul's name they will aid us.", he yells to his companions.
Lorth turns and heads towards the gate intending to stand besides Bralin...

"Master Ly told me there would be days like this, but with perseverance Alemi will see me through."

Knowing that his skills are not well suited to this long-range combat, Ash decides to try to scale the roof one more time. That mage cannot be allowed to cast freely at his companions in the courtyard.

Nodding again to Caerthon, Ashalan mutters a prayer to Alemi before again leaping from the paladin's hands and stretching for the overhanging roof, but realizing he is probably going to fall short, again. (Jump: 9, Climb 14)

"Praise Gargul ... "

It is Paladin Lorth Jeradosta's words that wake the little monk from her daze of awe. Turning, her eyes climb the height of their new opponent, rising up above even her altered form. There, before it, stand Bralin Stoneminder and Lorth Jeradosta, the paladin with terrible injuries.

Harvest quickly draws a scroll from her haversack, and reads the contents as the dowel pulls the parchment open. As the scroll vanishes, the now-not-so-little monk stabs a finger in the direction of the towering figure's weapon. (Cast Grease on Weapon)

Despite heavy odds and the relentless hail of arrows, the party manages to slowly deplete the enemy's force inside the walls of the courtyard.

Arminus takes the opportunity to drink from a vial of healing before following Hugo down the stairs.

Andrath sinks yet another arrow into those along the top of the wall. The archer (A3) stumbles and his eyes take on a glassy appearance but he remains standing and manages to fire a return volley at his adversary below. His arrow goes wide [Hit AC=20] but his companion manages to pierce the rogue's defenses [Hit AC=24 for 3 HP].

The three archers to the north and east fire on the monk as she casts her spell. The arrows clatter to the ground around her [Hit AC=8, 8, 24].

Villemus is not as fortunate with his shot and now has the full attention of the dread mage who points his hands at the half-drow and sends three bolts of energy into the necromancer's chest [ magic missile 9 HP damage]. Caerthon and Ashalan continue to look for a way up to the wall and the dread mage above.

Lorth drags his battered body to a standing position after the oxen and cart have trundled by. He can reach Bralin's side next round, However the dwarf does not stand alone as both Harvest and Merryn come to his side.

At the gate, a towering figure, fully nine feet tall and perhaps as much as 600 pounds, slips through the open portcullis to stand before the dwarf and his companions. Armed with a heavily spiked morningstar, the battle ogre roars in defiance, "Torlah is not afraid of puny rock man. Battle me and die". Torlah's muscular frame is encased in spiked armor and he carries a thick wooden shield adorned with three sharpened spikes of it's own. Unaffected by the monk's spell [Ref = 16], the ogre swings his morningstar at the dwarf. It narrowly misses Bralin, cutting through the air above his head.

Those assembled at the gates can see a horde of orcs, and hobgoblins surging forward behind the ogre. The shields and banners of the orcs bear the symbol of an axe embedded in a bloodied human skull.

Even as they appear to be hopelessly outnumbered, the tide of battle shifts. The ghostly force of paladins summoned from their rest sweeps around and past the Swords of Light and cuts into the assembled column of orcs. Their shimmering swords make no sound as they slice into the dread's army. Only the guttural screams of terrified orcs can be heard as they die.

"I told you so! Told ya to learn Shield but ya just wouldn't listen.", Villemus ratsy familiar squeaked when the magical missile slammed onto the skinny drow.

"Hey, you alright!", Bone squeaked worriedly when the necromancer half-collapsed, and spatted out a mouthful of bright crimson blood.

"Obviously not...", the seriously wounded drow gasped breathlessly as he started on one of the first spell he had mastered. A slight bluish glow erupted forth from his gesturing hand and faded just as rapidly.

"Get him.", the drow whispered as his deep sea green eyes stared piercingly at the dread mage. He drew another arrow from his quiver.

No one noticed a tiny shadow darting up the walls towards the wizard.

"Caerthon, I do believe they could use your might at the gate. Let us make our way in haste, and may your sword strike true."

Quickly turning to Villemus, Ashalan adds, "Friend, be well and keep your head low, I do not think you are in any shape to withstand another strike from that mage."

Wild cries and the clash of arms as the dread army meet the ghostly paladins. Like a rising tide, the cries of the enemy escalate as the weight of the horror they now face sinks in. Beyond the castle walls, a searing flash of white springs upwards to the sky, and then darkness closes again as over the fields comes a rolling sound like thunder.

For a moment the great bulk of the monster that is Torlah is thrown into relief. Bralin and Lorth swing at the ogre, but it is the druid, Merryn's blade-like beam of red-hot fire that wounds the creature. (Torlah the Ogre AC 20). The archers on the roof take aim at Ashalan with one arrow striking the half-elf (A7 hit AC 21, for 3 dmg) while the archer on the eastern wall aims for Harvest, but misses.

Bone remains hidden from the mage, but the monk of Alemi does not. Three bolts of magical energy fly from the mage's hand, striking Ashalan (Magic Missile for 11 pts dmg.)

Ashalan (AC 20 w/ seal, HP 2/22)
Monday May 16th, 2005 10:35:41 AM

Ashalan barely slows as the arrow slices across his chest, but his stride falters as the magical bolts strike in the middle of his back, knocking the breath from him.

Stupid monk! You made yourself an easy target!

Seeing that he would be of little use in melee now, Ash searches for cover, for he has made himself a much too inviting target.

Spotting the wagon to his left, Ash circles around to use it as cover from the archers and that blasted mage. Hoping to make his way to the overhanging roof of the barracks.

The archer targeted by Arminus jerks in a violent parody of ballet as his body is pierced by the magical arrows. He crumples, dead, behind the crenellated stonework of the wall. While Ashalan seeks cover under the brewer's wagon, Villemus moves away from the shelter of the overhang and into plain view of the mage. Before the evil sorcerer can get off a spell, he is pierced through his dark heart by the half-drow's arrow. He bends forward as if resting on the wall, and then his whole body relaxes as his evil spirit abandons its mortal confines.

Harvest wields restorative magic, while Andrath comes to the aid of his companions. Bralin steps forward, striking at the ogre. His axe screeches as it scrapes along the creature's shield, but does no damage. Lorth spins 'round slashing out hard with the sword of his family, and opens a horrendous wound in the monsters side. As the creature hisses in pain, Merryn brandishes his fiery sword, further wounding the ogre.

The two archers on the rooftop target Villemus with one arrow striking true (Hit AC 25, for 3 dmg).

Torlah roars an obscenity and smashes down on Lorth with his morningstar (Hit AC 23 for 12 dmg). He sweeps at the dwarf with his shield in an attempt to crush him into the stone wall of the fortress, but is unable to move the stalwart dwarf.

Out from the blackness beyond the keep the sounds of furious fighting and the crying out of men and foul bred beasts. Sour horns and drums are joined by a low moaning song, deep and somber, punctuated by the clash and clang of weapon on weapon.

Before the drow could savor his victory, an arrow brushed passed his cloak. Turning towards the archers, Villemus gasped in pain as a second arrow sliced deeply passed his ribs, releasing yet another flood of red crimson blood.

Staggering from the wound, Villemus decided that he had taken enough risk for the moment, and hopped back into the shadow and tried his best to kiss the ground. While crouching low, the drow invocated his healing tattoo again to ease some of his pains.

Meanwhile, the scrawny rat familiar noticed that the mage had passed on before he could even bite him. And so shrugging in a way that on a rat could, Bone crept towards the archers at the great tower instead.

Tuesday May 17th, 2005 2:39:19 PM

Finding cover for the moment underneath the wagon, Ash gains a few precious moments to check his wounds, gather his wits, and to survey the situation.

To his right the mage thankfully falls to the onslaught of arrows from Villemus. To his left the majority of his comrades face the towering monstrosity. And from the top of the keep archers continue to rain down their arrows.

Being in no condition for another thoughtless charge into battle, Ash slips from under the wagon, and hurries to the cover of the barracks. Slipping his sling from its pouch as he does so. Planning to skirt the edge of the courtyard to get into position to assist his friends from afar.

Lorth unselfishly puts the life of another before his own and gives Merryn the gift of healing. Lucky for him Harvest is nearby with Bralin's wand. Lucky for everyone, the dwarf finds the wherewithal to swing low and lethal, resulting in a crippling wound to the ogre. Torlah drops his weapons as he tries to keep the foul contents of his abdomen from spilling out upon the cobblestones of the yard. Merryn swings, and misses, yet the ogre's eyes suddenly dim, and he topples soundlessly forward. Andrath emerges victorious from behind the heap, his sword stained with the ogres black life-blood.

Villemus takes shelter once again, finding dark shadows near Caerthon and the door through which the evil knight had earlier disappeared. His familiar creeps along the walkway at the top of the wall, moving in the direction of the archers atop the roof of the main hall.

Ashalan runs for the cover of the barracks, closing on his new friends while Arminus wings one of the archers.

The archers fire back aimlessly, having lost their easy target, then duck out of view and are gone.

Now, silently the ghostly host of paladins moves forward onto the field outside the castle. They advance upon their enemies like the rising tide through breaches in a dike that would have been thought secure. Their spiritual minds bent wholly on the joy of battle and the defeat of their evil enemy.

No ogres, no orcs, nor other evil creature makes it through the gate of Strongwind Castle. And, after a time, all is quiet beyond the curtain wall, save for a low singing, like the sighing of the wind, for no fell creature of the dread army remains living on the field.

A door opens, and a small group of women, children, and elder folk emerge. With a cry, one woman falls upon a fair youth, lying dead upon the ground. "My son! My son! My beautiful boy!" she cries out in anguish. The bewildered villagers fan out into the yard,. They are joined by the survivors of the battle, farmers and folks from the village, and soldiers from the garrison. A few men start to pile the dead enemy while others minister to the wounded.

Hugo and Langdon run across the yard to stand by Caerthon and Villemus in front of the big double doors.

She sighs with relief as she shrinks down to her normal size. Moving amongst her companions, she dispenses healing to the most gravely wounded. A new wand would have to be purchased. Soon.

"I believe that it was the Reeve," she says between applications of Bralin Stoneminder's healing wand, "who was the woman Kiel saw arranging the wagon in town. I am told that it was she who arranged the fireworks which must surely have been the signal for the attack."

Pausing in her work, the little brown monk asks, "Shall we proceed inside? Andrath Silverhand?"

Villemus (AC 18 , HP 15/26, Mage Armor)  d8+1=6
Tuesday May 17th, 2005 11:46:01 PM

Picking himself up from the ground, Villemus visibly frowned as he noticed the number of death this day, Dreads or otherwise. "Gargul forgives us for the lives we took this day...", the drow began prayed silently for the departed souls as he tried to save as many of the fallen as possible.

Recalling his familiar, Villemus searched around for any survivors who may need healing (only those that would die without magical healing) and used his last charge of healing to that effect.

After taking a moment to rearrange his bloodstained attire, the half-drow said, "I think we should go after the blackguard as soon as everyone is ready! I do not believe this invasion is the main motive."

Holding his bow on his left hand, and his bone wand on his right, Villemus is ready to enter the keep in search of the blackguard.

OoC
Villemus will use his healing on anyone that would die without the healing (Dreads or otherwise), else he would use it to heal himself. If there are not enough healing to go around the party, he will use it on the one with least HP.

Villemus will also look for useful items and clues among the fallen dreads as he walked around for the wounded, particularly for healing potions which he will use to save anyone he can. But he will not spend alot of time doing it, as he wished to pursue the blackguard asap.

Arminas (AC 19, HP 25/25)

Arminas is visibly upset as the two archers on the roof retreat.

"I wasted too much time with the sword, and you my friends paid the penalty. In the future, I will make sure to focus on archers and mages. Luckily, thanks in part to the seal I activated, you live."

"I am ready to finish this. The seal is gone, and cannot be reactivated. I am afraid we need to rely upon our own skills at avoiding injury."

Arminas looks to Andrath, and adds:
"Upon your word I am ready."

Ashalan (AC 17, HP 11)
Wednesday May 18th, 2005 12:34:02 PM

The ogre falling to the assault of his comrades brings a sigh of relief and a brief prayer to Alemi, for both the living and the dead.

Before joining the others Ash makes a quick search of the wagon to see it carries anything of use. Hoping against hope for a healing potion or two.

Joining the others on the landing before the keep Ash gratefully accepts the healing touch from Harvest.

"Thank you sweet one, I was most impressed with your battle prowess, it is not easy to keep your wits about you in the heat of battle, and you so aptly illustrated that sometimes a sword or a bow are not the most effective means of overcoming an enemy. I have learned something this evening."

Having no experience with leadership, and seeing his companions deferring to Andrath, Ash does the same.

Merryn AC 17 HP 25/25
Wednesday May 18th, 2005 6:24:46 PM

Merryn feels rejuvenated by Lorth's healing touch. "Thank you for the assistance." (OOC: and thank you for the reminder. :) )

Merryn feels triumphant in face of the fallen ogre and takes a moment to catch his breath from the battle. Merryn turns in the direction of Harvest, "I agree, we ought to investigate the interior of the castle."

The rogue is surprised that the others look to him for leadership, for he seeks it not. However, if they are willing to follow where he will lead...

"To the keep then, and woe to the evil villain when we find him!" he announces.

Relieved that the enemy has been repelled for the moment, the Swords of Light take stock of themselves and their surroundings. Some healing is doled out when the little brown monk ministers to her friends. Andrath checks out the ogre and locates a small pouch on his belt. It contains a vial of some potion and 5 gold coins. Villemus and Ashalan apply themselves a little less diligently. (Roll Search DC=12 to find Villemus Highlight to display spoiler: { Potion CMW} and Ashalan Highlight to display spoiler: { Climbers Kit})

The party is of a common mind, and pursuit of the blackguard is the predominant thought. They make their way as a group to the double doors. Caerthon speaks solemnly, "If you will take it upon yourselves to seek out the evil one, then Hugo, Landgdon, and I will mount a vigil for the spirits of the dead so that they may find their way back to their place of rest." The paladin lifts his sword to his forehead by way of salute, then makes his way down the stairs, towards the gate. Hugo and Langdon also raise their swords, and then follow their leader.

Behind the door the sound of clashing weapons is unmistakable. When the doors are thrown open, the rush of night air causes the torches within to flicker. A male of mixed blood defends himself. Sword in one hand dagger in the other, he fends off two fighters. The helms of the fighters bear the tell-tale insignia of a human skull with an axe embedded in it. The first fighter slashes out at the blond half-elf and misses, distracted by the flickering of the light. The second takes his turn and draws blood (Hit AC 24, for 12 dmg).

Seeing that the paladin is the most wounded among the party, Villemus pressed his left palm on Lorth and invocated his healing tattoo (Heal 6 hp).

Searching briefly through the fallen dreads, the sharp elven eyes of Villemus spotted a small vial. And from the smell of it, a healing potion probably. Seeing that everyone is more or less functional, the drow slipped the potion into his pouch for the time being.

His great darkwood bow on his left, and a slender bone wand on his right, Villemus slipped into the room to assist the surrounded half-elf.

"Surround them! Don't let them escape to warn their master!", Villemus dashed towards the fighters and unleashed an eerie green bolt of energy at one of the skull-helmed fighters.

As the door flys open, Arminas quickly locks sight on the two enemy fighters. The one on the right (F1) should be a clear shot.
He lets fly a single arrow before the Swords of Light rush to aid.

Ash's hasty search having revealed nothing, he awaits the opening of the large double doors.

Making sure his quarterstaff is packed securely away in the holster on his backpack, he loads a bullet into his sling, ready for anything.

The doors open to reveal a warrior being set upon by two of the Dreads.

A single thought flashes through his mind.
I must assist him!

Ash rushes into the entry hall before realizing that there are those here that are better suited for this combat, and he is in no shape to run headlong into battle.

Taking Harvest's lead Ash circles the battle to the right, trying to keep one eye on the battle and one on the open and as of yet unexplored areas of the room.

The Swords of Light do not hesitate as they enter the chamber, and rush to the aid of the beleaguered half-elf. Swords and axes flash in the torchlight, and spells are discharged, but only the lone fighter's longsword connects with an enemy. (Fighter AC+20)

Other than the three combatants, there isn't much to see. The large room appears some sort of hallway or cloakroom, with a rather grand set of stairs leading up to another floor. Another hallway leads right, with two doors, one on either side of the hall.

Still targeting the blonde stranger dressed in green and brown, F2 strikes out and misses. F1 changes tactics and thrusts at the paladin (hit AC 19 for 11 dmg), before taking a step back.

Lorth presses his attack on the wounded fighter (F1) and with a solid swing Bralin dispatches him to his doom. The enemy slumped at his feet, the strange half-elf, wielding sword and dagger, turns to the remaining fighter (F2) wounding him sorely. Merryn takes a poke, almost, but not quite connecting, while Andrath moves into position to block the man's escape. Villemus calls for a stop to the fighting. The surviving fighter, stunned by the half-drow's spell, drops his weapon, and opens his hands, arms held away from his body.

The stealthy monk of Alemi makes his way down the basement stairs, but is blocked by two slumped bodies on the landing. (Ashalan Spot DC 12 to recognize the dead bear the insignia of Strongwind guards on their clothing.) The clash of arms continues, but any spoken words are unintelligible.

Harvest continues up the elegant stairway, the elven ranger her only escort. Quietly and unobserved, the small monk peeks around the corner and into a grand hall with a raised dais at one end. Intricately carved chairs and comfortable settees are grouped in small clusters along the perimeter of the room. The center is clear as if for some entertainment or a dance. A dozen women and elderly men are huddled in a corner. A female in a diaphanous outfit of multihued veils comforts a richly dressed and bejeweled woman who wimpers and moans.

The keen eyes of Harvest Moon and Arminus Calaelen pick out the large emerald and sapphire broach on the bejeweled woman's breast. It is unmistakably a dragonfly, its wings adorned with diamonds. At sight of the blood caked duo, the woman falls back onto the couch in a faint. The veiled dancer takes a tentative step toward the two at the top of the stairs, while the others cower together. "This one is an inn keeper of some import in the small town yonder. The Reeve? The Reeve isn't here. She left soon after the fighting started, after the captain and her lieutenant went downstairs."

Bralin restrains the unarmed fighter while Lorth clobbers him into unconsciousness. Merryn jabs at him for good measure. Villemus struggles with tying the man, while the strange bard expresses his thanks. Ashalan recounts his findings.

"The Paladin Catheron sees to the security of the Castle without. Fighting has ceased for the moment. But, perhaps it would be best to remain here for now. Someone will, no doubt, come for you when it is safe to emerge."

The brown monk bows again before turning back down the stairs in answer to Andrath Silverhand's call.

"Thank you, Arminas of Jahrlswolf," she says softly to the elven ranger at her side, "for accompanying me up the stairway." But she passes before her face can reveal more than her words, and continues down the stairs.

"There are none but frightened innocents above," Harvest reports when she catches up with the others. "The Reeve is below. The Blackguard must be as well. Captain Greenblade and Lieutenant Orrin were said to have preceded them."

Wednesday May 25th, 2005 11:09:32 PM

With the battle on the main floor of the castle quelled, the Swords of Light find a few precious moments to heal themselves and greet Any, the half-elf who fought so well moments before. Harvest Moon and Arminus console those upstairs, then return to join the rest of the party. Andrath leads them down the rough stone staircase and into the bowels of the Castle at Strongwind. Torches light the way. Several dead guards and at least two dead fighters of the dread litter the stairs, their life blood collecting in small dark pools. As they near the bottom, the unmistakable sound of sword on sword and the rasping breath of combatants can be heard.

As Andrath peeks around the corner at the bottom of the stairs, two dimly lit rooms come into view, They are connected by an arched opening, it's two heavy iron doors flung open. Two separate hallways exit the front room in either direction; a well dressed female half-elf lies unconscious on the floor to Andrath's left.

Two officers of the Strongwind Garrison face off against each other in the archway, circling warily, their swords ring out as they parry each other's blows. Lieutenant Orrin appears to be bleeding from his side. His opponent, Captain Greenblade, appears uninjured although she is obviously fatigued. With a sudden flurry of blows, the lieutenant presses forward catching Arista Greenblade off-guard and his blade cuts across her shoulder drawing blood. He snarls something incomprehensible and continues to press his attack.

More requests for the healing wand. Another would have to be purchased before long.

Down the stairs, Harvest peeks around the corner to see the two officers engaged in combat. With each other!

Quickly, she draws a scroll from her haversack. Reading it, she takes on the form of the Blackguard who had preceded them into the Great Keep. To all besides her companions she would be the Blackguard. All it would take would be a moment. A look of despair from one. Triumph, perhaps, from the other.

Harvest Moon steps out.

He whispers down to Bralin, "Do you have any person-holding spells? I figure that we will have to capture both of them, and question them both to find out what is going on."

DM Bob & Carla (Vaults Rnd 2)  d20+8=19 d20+2=16 d4=3
Thursday May 26th, 2005 11:43:35 PM

The Swords of Light take action, each in their own independent way.

Harvest casts a disguise spell and immediately appears as a blackguard before stepping into the chamber. Villemus and Ashalan follow immediately, and call out to the two combatants in the archway. Both Leiutenant Orrin and Captain Greenblade turn to look at them. The Captain's face registers surprise at the sudden intrusion. The lieutenant hesitates just a moment , distracted by the sudden appearance of a blackguard and a wildly dressed drow. In that briefest of moments, the Captain's blade strikes home and cuts the already wounded Lieutenant across his temple. He wipes at the blood with his free hand and unleashes a vicious torrent of blows at his aggressor, pushing her back against the archway. "I'll deal with you" he spits his words out in anger.

Harvest is unsure of what to think, the lieutenant is clearly angered, and perhaps fearful at the same time, but other than the look of surprise on the Captain's face she is hard to read.

Lorth strides across the room and focuses his attention on Arista Greenblade, looking into her soul to determine if she is of an evil nature. He detects no such aura on the Captain, but is staggered by the overpowering sense of evil to his right. The clammy oppressive aura penetrates his very fibre as the blackguard enters the chamber from the east.

Arminus recognizes the Captain from the session at the Giggling Ghost and unleashes an arrow at Lieutenant Orrin, who swears an obscenity as the arrow glances off his armor.

Merryn, Bralin, and Andrath hold their position in the stairway, trying to determine which of the two combatants to side with while Any moves into the room and tries to discern if any of the voices are the same as he heard earlier, only to find himself far closer to the evil knight than he might wish.

The true blackguard advances down the corridor towards Any, sword in hand. The blade is smeared in blood; sticky red fluid extends down the hilt and onto his gauntlet. With a dismissive wave of the evil paladins free hand and a muttered phrase, the bard feels a wave of fear roll over him [Will Save vs DC 15 or be shaken for 3 rounds, otherwise shaken for only 1 round (-2 on all rolls)]

With the sight of the blackguard looming down on, him all thoughts of the clashing soldiers flee from his mind.

A wave of his blood-caked mailed hand brings a wave of fear that washes over Ash, eliciting an overwhelming urge to retreat from that fearsome sword.

Trying to tumble out of the warrior's way results in Ash scooting and rolling across the dusty floor in a most ungraceful manner. (Tumble: 7 (9-2))

But as Ashalan scrambles to his feet, he hopes that he is in better position to meet the fearsome blackguard, and that his comrades have noticed the appearance of this dire threat.

"YOU," the image cries in the voice of a young girl, "YOU ARE BAD!" No mercy for this one. "YOU MUST DIE!"

"Bralin Stoneminder," the brown girl whispers, and she draws a scroll from her haversack, "grow large and smite him from afar."

Friday May 27th, 2005 11:00:01 AM

Do you have any person-holding spells? Andrath asks.
"Nay," the dwarf replies.

And then the Blackguard appears. In conjunction with Harvest's words, Bralin's course of action becomes plain. He pauses long enough to ask the protection of The Chamber, and then strides forward toward the guard, but close enough to the monk for her to cast her spell. The dwarf drops the held scroll [free action] and draws his axe as he moves.

Arminas is convinced. This is the Captain Greenblade he saw in the dream. Lorth senses no evil in her, it is not an imposter. Orrin must die.

Stepping forward 5 feet should put him within 30 feet, a nice range for doing maximum damage (free action).

Notching a magical arrow, he lets it fly at Orrin. The arrow flys wildly, completely missing Orrin.

"Now would be a good time to convince me you are not a traitor, I am not likely to miss again."

Arminas lets another arrow fly at Orrin, this time with much better accuracy.

Sunday May 29th, 2005 12:58:25 PM

Andrath struggles with figuring out who the real evil is between the two figures fighting each other. "Arminas, hold your attacks, but keep them trained on the two guards."

Then he faces the captain and the lieutenant and calls out, "You two, drop your weapons. We are here to stop the evil Dread from taking over the keep. Either both of you, only one of you, or neither of you are aligned with the Dread. Drop your weapons and back away from each other, now. We will kill the blackguard, and then we can deal with the two of you. If either of you do not drop your weapons and back away, we will assume that you are aligned with the Dread, and will have to kill you. My friend Arminas with the bow, and I, will make short work of whomever decides to fight, especially in your wounded condition. Arminas, move to the left for a clear shot."

Andrath moves across the room [OOC: double move], to stand 10' immediately south of the Captain.

Monday May 30th, 2005 7:31:35 AM

"You fools!" Lieutenant Orrin practically spits the words out at Andrath and Arminus as he tries to staunch the flow of blood from the elf's arrow protruding from his shoulder. Captain Greenblade seizes the moment and steps behind the injured man. His eyes open wide as she plunges her dagger into his lower back. "You fools..." the lieutenant stiffens momentarily before dropping his sword and slumping into the Captains arms. She holds him in front of herself like a shield. "Come no closer or I'll stick him again" she calls out.

Villemus reacts instantly to the presence of the blackguard and activates his wand. sending forth a burst of energy that appears to stagger the evil knight.

Merryn charges forward but finds his way partly blocked by his colleagues and can only get within 10 feet of the blackguard, at which point he can feel the unholy presence of the servant of the dread as it assails his mind and soul [Aura of Despair, -2 on all saves].

[OOC Merryn can only charge if his path is a straight line, unobstructed by others.]

The blackguard ignores Harvest's command and is equally dismissive of the advancing paladin. He slashes out at Merryn with his longsword, striking the druid across the shoulder [Hit AC=24 for 4 dmg , -1 to CON].

Bralin casts a spell on himself and moves next to the monk whereupon he grows to twice his normal size. Ashalan and Any ready themselves for the ensuing fight.

Harvest (AC22 HP 21/28)  d20+8=25
Monday May 30th, 2005 8:12:48 AM

Harvest Moon prepares for a spell.

But then, the traitor reveals herself through the cowardice of her actions.

The tone of the little brown monk's voice matches her tread as she walks with calm, forceful, deliberation across the room.

"You may strike him dead, Captain Greenblade. But you will still be brought to justice. And your lieutenant's death will be one more crime for which you will be called to account for. You cannot escape."

As she moves in the guise of the darkly armored Blackguard, the spiked chain comes into her small hands, draped by the ends of her over-sized sleeves.

"Lay aside your weapon and surrender. The law holds mercy for those who recant. Lay down your weapon."

Harvest stops abruptly before Lieutenant Orrin. Her whole body pulls back in a wave, that sends the end of the spiked chain forward to wrap Captain Greenblade's weapon and tear it from her hand.

The blackguard falls back under Bralin's vicious onslaught and staggers into the wall behind him. The evil paladin moves his hand over the horrific wound and utters a few guttural words as the wound begins to close before your eyes.[Cure Serious Wds = 23] "Now, it is time to go and join our master" he calls to Arista Greenblade. His blade remains firmly locked in his bloody gauntlet, despite Villemus' spell. Merryn and Any join in the attack against the blackguard, but only Any's blade finds the mark.

Arista Greenblade remains partially covered behind the limp body of Kelesh Orrin. Arminus slowly begins to realize the duplicity of the Captain, and that her presence at the elven gathering speaks to nothing more than elven blood. No doubt there were elven followers of Marteus at the meeting as well. He keeps the Captain covered with his bow. Harvest and Andrath press forward to attack. Andrath's blade fails to find the mark as he tries to avoid further injuring the Captain's unconscious hostage. Harvest's chain shoots out towards Greenblade, striking her weapon but failing to dislodge it from her grip.[Opposed Disarm=29]

Lorth presses down upon the blackguard wielding the sword of his sire effectively. Any, connects with his sword, but misses with his dagger. Merryn makes a threat, but is unable to connect. Bralin, as wide as he is tall, with forearms the size of hams, swings his mighty axe and cleaves the foe clear in two at the waist spraying an arc of crimson blood across wall.

Harvest and Ashalan move to intercept the captain, while a furious Arminas looses an arrow on the traitor, wounding her. Andrath comes at the half-elf from the side and gets her with his swords. (Greenblade's AC is 21) Finding the target of his spell has been dispatched; Villemus notices the route is clear to Greenblade. He sends his magic in her direction, effectively blinding her. The servant of the dread swings out wildly with her sword, striking the rogue (Hit AC 25, for 11 dmg, -1 to CON) (Greenblade's AC now 18)

Villemus (AC 18 , HP 21/26, Mage Armor)  d20+5=10 d20+2=20
Wednesday June 1st, 2005 2:13:33 AM

"Too much blood... too much blood...", Villemus mumbled as Bralin splattered the drow with the blood of the blackguard while his familiar, Bone screeched, and fainted.

Villemus unslung his grim scythe as he moved toward the blinded captain warily. "Surrender now. You are blinded and alone. Gargul wil forgives.", the wild half-drow shouted as he swung the curved blade of his scythe at Captain Greenblade in attempt to trip her.

Harvest (AC22 HP 21/28)  d20+9=11 d20+9=21
Wednesday June 1st, 2005 10:10:27 AM

A high pitched screech comes from the direction of the drow newcomer. A shout, and Harvest Moon backs away as, from the corner of her eye, she catches the glint of his scythe sweeping across the floor.

To her right, the crumpled body of Lieutenant Orrin comes into view. The brown girl stoops to touch his brow with a healing Orison.

Then the question comes to her ... What lead them to fight before this door? What lies beyond? Pivoting on the balls of her feet, the little monk peers in with inquisitive eyes.

Arminas (AC 19, HP 25/25)  d8+1=9
Wednesday June 1st, 2005 10:41:40 AM

Arminas' concern shifts from Greenblade when she is blinded and the blackgaurd is killed. He looks toward Orrin. He needs my help.

Walking over to Orrin, Arminas kneels down beside him.

"Harvest, if it were not for me Lt. Orrin would not be lying here. Let me bind his wounds and afford some healing."

Shaking his head, with a tear in his eye, he adds:

"My own stupid trust in the honor of elves has caused this. First I offend Bralin and the others, and now this."

Arminas then gently removes the arrow, binding his wounds. He takes a potion from his pocket, and slowly trickles the contents down the wounded officers throat.

"I can only hope this helps."

Actions
Potion of Cure Light Wounds 9 HP restored.

OOC: I am going fishing, and will probably post late tomorrow.

Any (17AC, 20/20HP)
Wednesday June 1st, 2005 12:56:26 PM

Any cleans his weapons, but does not sheath them. He scans up and down the side hallways, then asks, "Are any hurt beyond their own ability to cure, if so perhaps I can be of some help."

Any will aid those who might need help with spell and potion, but will not drop his guard more than necessary to do so. Too much violence has taken place for reasons he does not yet understand.

Ashalan (AC 17, HP 20/22)  d20+5=25 d20+5=15 d8+2=10 d8+2=7
Wednesday June 1st, 2005 12:58:21 PM

Ashalan takes advantage of Greenblade's blindness and staggers her with a powerful roundhouse kick to the side of the head. (Hit AC 25, Dam: 10, crit check hit AC 15) Landing on the balls of his feet, ready to defend himself.

Bralin (AC21, 45/45, Protection vs Evil, Enlarge)
Wednesday June 1st, 2005 8:36:58 PM

The Blackguard is dead. The Captain is defeated.

Bralin scans the area for more opponents.

Andrath (AC20, 8/26 hp, -1 CON)
Wednesday June 1st, 2005 10:03:31 PM

Andrath backs away from the Captain, holding his swords at the ready. "Captain, you will drop your weapon and lie down on the ground. This is your only chance. Otherwise, the nine of us will chop you into little tiny pieces."

"Harvest, do you have that wand handy? I could sure use a little healing."
