Who's Forest Is This Anyway?
The Pitchfork Council

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday June 23rd, 2005 11:14:28 PM

The Swords of Light take care of personal business, helping out with the refugees, training in martial and arcane arts, and gathering information. They are greeted with respect wherever they go, for word has spread through Jarlwolf that they were instrumental in the recent battle against the Dread.

A few local children help Villemus look for the missing Fang, and return with several semi-domesticated felines. Without a description of the lost cat, there is little the drow can do but call for their release. Any and Ashalan are greeted warmly by the shopkeepers and plied with free samples in the market. Harvest's efforts with the refugees do not go unnoticed and two guardsmen from the community trail after the wood gatherers with food hampers for the makeshift community. Andrath completes his work for Feorges and returns to Dulcet's. His fingers are stained with ink and his head aches from the concentration required throughout the day.

Bralin and Arm spend the day under the instruction of Turnoch. The WLA's weapons instructor initially has an easy time with the dwarf's clumsy attacks, but as the afternoon wears on he finds himself on his heels and hard pressed to keep Bralin at bay as the initiate gets a feel for the bastard sword. Arm adjusts to the shortsword more quickly and soon feels comfortable with its size and weight.

Lorth makes his way to the adventurer's board where he bumps into Bralin, Arm, and Andrath on their way to Dulcet's.

At the head of the dinner table Dulcet looks tired. Her hair seems thinner and her face drawn. "These are trying times" she explains. "First the Dread attack Strongwind, then the heavens align themselves and nature goes awry, and now the elves and their half-brothers and sisters come pouring out of the Culverwood. If it were not for nature's unusually abundant offerings we would be hard pressed to feed them all." Dulcet brushes back a wisp of hair from her face and continues, "the Pitchfork Council meets tonight. There will be questions about the Dread. Our discussions will range widely and you must be patient for there is little common ground between some of the members."

Throughout dinner, the elderly leader of the Coven of Weal pries them for information on the Dread and the activities at the Crimson Fort.

Following dinner, Dulcet leads the Swords of Light by torchlight to Solstice Hall, where the Pitchfork Council holds it's meetings. The party is shown seats behind a short barrier that separats the councilors from the public. The silver haired witch passes through a little gate, and takes her place at the head of the table at the front of the chamber. The room fills as councilors select seats on either side of Dulcet. Clerks and other functionaries occupy two tables at the foot of the head table. As the party waits, they are joined by a number of elves, a couple of representatives from the WLA and Cassandra. The buzz in the room grows louder as the seats in the balcony above, and those behind them fill.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, take your seats! Council is in session" a clerk bangs a wooden staff on the floor to signify the beginning of the meeting. The effect is immediate, and a hush fills the room as Dulcet rises to speak.

"Citizens and Councilors of Cinnamon Valley, we have much to discuss this evening, but we would be remiss to not welcome our newest member. Caerthon, Paladin of the Watchful Eye, representing the peoples of Magpie Crossing." Dulcet, waves her hand towards an empty chair to her left, formerly that of the reeve of Magpie Crossing, Aleitha Reithvar. The elderly paladin rises from the gallery, and makes his way to the front of the room.

An elf at the far right of the table stands "By what right does he take this station? There are already enough humans on this council. He is a warrior and has no experience in the matters of state! A she-elf sitting next to him nods her head in agreement and there are murmurs from the crowd. Dulcet answers, "the people of Magpie Crossing have sent Caerthon as their voice and we will respect that choice." She continues in a firm voice, "without the perseverance of this paladin and his companions we might not have the luxury of this council, the Dread would occupy this Valley and you would be without the freedoms you have come to take for granted. There are ones here who can tell more of this." The silver haired witch beckons to the Swords of Light to stand and come forward. "Tell the council what you have seen."

One seat, on Dulcet's right, remains vacant.

Arminas
Friday June 24th, 2005 8:52:53 AM

Arminas rises and comes forward to address the gathering.

"Greeting fair people of Cinnamon Valley and beyond. I am Arminas Calaelen, from the vicinity of Merrydale and the Culverwood. Member of the Swords of Light. I stand to speak on behalf of Caerthon."

Arminas turns and gestures with a slight bow towards the paladin.

"Just yesterday I believed as many of my kind. That elves alone have the best interests of the Wold in their hearts. When the attack came upon the Strongwind Castle, we came upon Captain Greenblade, the captian of the guard and an elf, fighting with Lt. Orrin. Clearly one was a traitor."

Arminas then looks towards the throng of elves, and a tear rolls from his eye.

"I let my trust of elves decieve me. Captain Greenblade had aligned herself with the Dread. I almost killed Lt. Orrin in my mistaken belief that the elves have a purer heart. Luckily, Greenblade showed herself for what she was, a traitor. She was quickly dispatched."

Gathering himself, he adds:

"Caerthon showed leadership and wisdom to protect Cinnamon Valley and the Wold, regardless of the race of people. Do not be quick to judge by race, it is what one does that matters."

"I will let those who deserve more credit for victory give details of the battles."

Arminas then bows towards Bralin and sits.

Ashalan
Friday June 24th, 2005 3:41:22 PM

Ash stands and approaches the council, obviously shy about speaking in front of such a large crowd on such weighty matters. Squaring his shoulders to meet the council one would think that the slight half-elf was steeling himself to face the charge of a raging minotaur.

Taking a deep calming breath Ash addresses the council.

"For much of my life I have lived the sheltered life of a follower of Alemi, in many ways ignorant to the troubles and strife faced by the peoples of this land."

"In my trek from Rowena, across the Cinnamon Valley I have learned" Spreading his hands to encompass the throng in the hall, " that these folk here, whether human, elf, halfling, or dwarf, have faced these troubles daily. Trying their best to make a good life for those they love"

"I have had the great fortune to have been able to join with these Swords of Light in their fight for peace in this land. Yet though we fight with swords and spells, we are no more heroes than those of you here that stand up for what is right every day, you good people are as strong a weapon against the forces of evil as one can find. Only together can we counter what is befalling this land."

"The details of our battle, while telling, are not as important as the fact that there are forces of great change in action right now. No more telling then the great show of nature in the bounty that we have received."

His steel blue eyes flashing with passion Ash continues with heat in his voice.

"In times of change there will always be those who hope to capitalize on the weak. Whether it be the denizens of the Dread, stealing an artifact of power to further contaminate this peaceful valley. Or Parnoth, oppressing those he should be sheltering. Whatever form the evil takes, it is all around us, both hidden and visible, patiently waiting to strike to the very heart of what is right and pure."

"To stand up against those who would see the light fade, it is going to take all of us working together. It is going to take more than just the champions we have chosen. The Swords of Light will be swept away like a pebble in an avalanche if left to face the darkness alone."

Turning in a slow circle to speak to the entire gathering Ash continues.

"I will stand for what is good, and I ask for each one of you in turn, to look deep inside yourself, into the depths of your soul. Ask yourself if you will you be able to set aside your petty squabbles, and your selfish desires, to rise up as one shining entity. Ready and willing to strike deep into the blackness that will consume us all if we are not set and determined to stop it. I for one am ready to stand up... who will stand with me?"

Ash searches the room, a questioning look in his eye, trying to hide the shock at the torrent of words that just escaped his lips. With a final small bow to the council Ashalan sits, and waits for the response.

Harvest
Friday June 24th, 2005 4:41:15 PM

Harvest Moon stands as Ashalan Lathanyel presents his call and challenge. The oversized cuff of her sleeve drops away as she raises her hand to speak. The small brown girl moves her gaze from first one face to the next, engaging the attention of each person around the table in turn. To each in turn, Harvest Moon presents a grim and serious face.

"The invaders from the Dread," she says at last, "came not only as a force of invasion. They came for a thing that you sent to Stormwind Castle for safe keeping. Lieutenant Kelesh Orrin said that it was a stone, an artifact which he believes that the Dread may use to bring life to a new soul forge."

"I do not know what this means. But as the Dread was beaten back, they escaped with this stone. The Lieutenant seemed to think this was of dire consequence. He bid us come to you with this news."

Harvest then bows, a small ducking motion of her head, and the first sign of self-consciousness she has yet to exhibit.

"Thank you," she says, "that is my report." And she seats herself once again.

Any
Friday June 24th, 2005 10:07:55 PM

Any stands before the council and says, "I am new to this company, having been brought into the fray quite accidentally. I came here to entertain a few nobles, enchant the crowd, and perhaps earn a few more weeks worth of my keep.

However, I have learned that there is more going on in this world of greater import than my meager problems, and these evil men have brought the fight to my door, drew first blood, and embroiled me in these deep matters.

I have seen the devastation that they have caused, and the weightier matters that their actions have caused. I cannot turn my back on this.

These good warriors have saved me, in addition to all of this, and I owe them a debt of life. I will aid them as I can for the sake of that debt, and to overturn the wrongs that are being done."

He then turns and sits quietly back down.

Bralin
Friday June 24th, 2005 10:37:40 PM

Words. Many words. Bralin is half decided to simply sit and wait.

Yet, Dulcet has called for a report. A report the dwarf can deliver. He rises.

"The foe has refortified the Crimson Fort in the Dead Lands. Tis now a base for their attacks. Tis Caerthon that discovered this.

They have infiltrated Magpie Crossing, replacing the townsfolk with collaborators. Caerthon rooted them out.

They struck at Stongwind Castle. Caerthon led the battle against them, and a great portion of their force was destroyed.

They have captured the stone you sent there from the Tower of Cnut. Caerthon hurried hither to warn you.

War is upon you. Unite or die."

His report concluded, Bralin returns to his place, steeling himself for the talks to go on into the evening.

Villemus
Friday June 24th, 2005 11:09:06 PM

"Greeting, Citizens and Councilors of Cinnamon Valley. I am Villemus of House Bralfah. As my companions had reported, the Dreads had infiltrated and invaded Magpie's Crossing for the purpose of an artifact to craft a new soul forge."

"I have nothing more to add other than the Dreads and their collabrators had planned their theft well. Most of them are wearing enchanted rings to hide their evil intentions."

"I am of a simple soul, and I care greatly for the lost souls claimed by the dreads. If the council is willing, I freely offers my services."

The half drow gave a bow before ending his speech, "We are all children of Wold. Elf, dwarf, human, fair, dark, good or evil. We are all children of Wold. Perhaps we can reclaim back some of our wayward brothers and sisters. I hope mercy can temper our blades."

And with a laugh, Villemus stalked back to his companions, "That is if the family can stand together in the first place."

Andrath
Sunday June 26th, 2005 6:36:02 PM

Andrath stands to take his turn. He turns to smile at Ash, silently thanking the half-breed for his stirring speech.

"I will stand with my new friend. I have been with the Swords from the start. Although we have had our differences, and changes in membership, we have always worked together to overcome the challenges that we have met. You here in Cinnamon Valley need to do the same.

"A philosopher named Aesop told a story about a father with three sons. The three sons were constantly bickering, fighting one another, never able to resolve their differences. The father, fed up with their constant infighting, decided to teach them a lesson. He picked up a stick from the bundle of kindling by the fire, and snapped it easliy, even though he was a frail old man.

"See how easy it is for me to snap one piece of wood?" he asked.

Then he picked up the entire bundle, and handed it to his oldest, and strongest son. "Now son, you try to snap this bundle."

Of course, the oldest son could not snap the entire bundle at once. The father said, "So it is with the three of you. Alone, you can each be broken by your problems. But together, you can defeat your problems, since it will be that much more difficult for the problems to break all of you at once."

Then the elf returns to his seat, waiting to hear what the members of the council have to say.

DM Bob & Carla
Monday June 27th, 2005 12:22:20 AM

Paladin Caerthon assumes his seat on the Pitchfork Council, replacing the reeve exposed by the Swords of Light as an associate of the Dread. The members of the party weigh in eloquently, with Arminus, Ashalan, and Andrath speaking of the importance of strength in unity, and Harvest, Any, Villemus, and Bralin pointing out facts related to the rebuilding of Dread forces at the Crimson Fort, the conspiracy to infiltrate Cinnamon Valley and the attempt to take control of Strongwind Castle. It is pointed out that although the forces were dealt a serious defeat, they did make away with the artifact from the Tower of Cnut. Caerthon speaks briefly and deliberately reporting that Captain Kelesh Orrin of the garrison at Strongwind, was reinstituting patrols along the edge of the Dread Lands, and that the presence of a Death Knight at the Crimson Fort had been confirmed.

Debate is short on the topic, and general agreement is reached that more deliberation is required to find a permanent solution to the Dread, the Death Knight and the stolen artifact.

The council moves on to the topic of the elves and those of elven blood pouring out of the Culverwood to avoid being taken into slavery by Parnoth and his minions. Sympathy is expressed for the difficulties experienced by the residents of the Culverwood, however there is a concern that they can not be easily accommodated in Cinnamon Valley. A representative of the Hill People speaks up, "I don't have anything against elves, but to have them camping in our woodlots...well, there would be disease, the issue of food and water, proper shelter, and such. Eventually there would be restless elves causing trouble, violence." "How hmany are there now?" asks the representative of the Hmana. "There is a large camp near Witchspawn" volunteers a witch in dark green robes, with long black hair. "And another large camp north of Merrydale," adds the representative from that community. "The Shepherds of Alemi have been visiting the camps to minister to the bodies and souls of the unfortunates," adds a cleric, continuing "their basic needs are being met, but many are sick at heart with longing for their woodland home." An old man, his long black hair now mostly silvery grey, cloaked in a simple robe of some plain grey stuff rises to speak. His eyes, set in a crinkled face are also grey, yet they seem to twinkle when they set on Lorth. The paladin may recognize the hermit who earlier had provided him with a place to rest. "Gargul asks his followers to correct offences against the balance of life and death, to track down spirits who have lost their way, and show them the road to their home. Just as the Land of Shadows is the proper home for the spirits of the dead, so is the Culverwood the home to these elves."

"The solution to this problem will only be found in the Culverwood," announces Dulcet, "yet its representative is absent." The silver haired witch gestures towards the empty chair to her immediate right, and frowns, showing her concern. "We need the wisdom of Grynntymm Deeproot the Greenmage of Culverwood. We need his counsel and his connections to those in the Culverwood that can help."

Arminas
Monday June 27th, 2005 12:51:08 PM

Arminas once again addresses the council.

"If you deem it wise, I volunteer to lead a group into the Culverwood in search of Grynntymm Deeproot. I was raised in the Forest of Culverwood, and know the dangers and way of the Forest."

Then looking at the Swords of Light, he adds:

"Of course, it is only a suggestion. I am willing to lead a group, if a group so chooses to go. It is a beautiful and dangerous place, so do not decide lightly."

Villemus
Monday June 27th, 2005 1:13:00 PM

"Fear not, friend Arminas. As long as the need is true, I will go.", Villemus affirmed simply.

Any
Monday June 27th, 2005 2:09:02 PM

"I too will go into the forests. I have long traveled through this land, and have desired to see the homeland of my father. I would see this great evil stopped. Have no fear for me, I have well learned the ability to play my part in any production, be it battle, travel, or whatever."

Any then sits quietly to await the response of the rest of the group.

Harvest
Monday June 27th, 2005 3:29:42 PM

Harvest Moon listens as Arminas Calaelen proposes an expedition into the Culverwoods. Here lies the way to the south, the direction in which lies the dragon tyrant, Parnoth. Again she raises her hand.

"I am sorry. I apologize for interupting again. But, may I ask, if any know the last whereabouts of the Greenmage, Grynntymm Deeproot? Also, are there any who may know why the Greenmage is not here with us today?"

"I am sorry," she apologizes again, and remains standing awaiting an answer.

Ashalan
Monday June 27th, 2005 3:51:43 PM

Feeling the need to be brief after his last performance Ash stands to quickly voice his intent.

"I stand ready to venture forth with the Swords of Light where ever they, and this council, feel the need is greatest."

Adding with a quizzical look at the others, "Exactly where is that again?"

Bralin
Monday June 27th, 2005 8:32:18 PM

Bralin looks at Arminas for several long moments.

Then the dwarf very delibrately swivels his head to look at Andrath, and waits.

Lorth
Monday June 27th, 2005 9:45:25 PM

Lorth bows his head as the hermit speaks, concentrating on his every word. His words are wise and Lorth decides to put aside his apprehension of the elves help them when/if the need arises.

When Dulcet speaks of the Greenmage Lorth's head perks up. "Andrath and I have traveled the culverwood and been to see the Greenmage before. If the council and Andrath decide it is needed, I will be willing to seek him out again.", Lorth says matter of factly.

He then waits for Andrath to speak, give the order and he will go.

Arminas Illegal second post
Monday June 27th, 2005 9:56:01 PM

Seeing Bralin give a look that clearly states that Arminas is trying to wrest control from Andrath, Arminas adds:

"I was merely offering my service as a forest guide, not the leader of the Swords of Light. I believe that last time you had Cassandra lead you through the forest. I can do the same, especially if she is not available. Of course, if you do not require the services of an elf raised in the Culverwood then I withdraw my offer."

Andrath
Monday June 27th, 2005 10:22:14 PM

"Arminas, don't worry. There is no leader. For decisions like this, we either all agree, or we decide on another course of action. During combat, I may direct some of our actions, just because I know in general what each of us is capable of."

"I agree with my friends. Lorth and I have met with Grynntymm before, and we can probably find the way to his home again. Does the council want us to enter the Culverwood, to see why he has not attended her tonight?"

DM Bob & Carla
Tuesday June 28th, 2005 7:58:21 AM

The Swords of Light volunteer to enter the Culverwood in search of the missing greenmage. Lorth and Andrath both recall the way to the Spring of Alnair where they have met Grynntym before.

"Thank you my brave friends" Dulcet answers on behalf of the council. "You have already risked much on behalf of the people of Cinnamon Valley. I hesitate to call upon you again so quickly, but it appears I must. I...we accept your offer to find our missing greenmage." Dulcet casts a meaningful glance down the table towards the group of three councillors who had opposed the appointment of Caerthon to the council. They appear to get the message as only a few disgruntled murmers follow her pronouncement.

Dulcet leans to her left and whispers something in the ear of the silver haired elf on her left. "Before you leave, Elbereth will provide you with papers identifying you as representatives of this council, to be granted full diplomatic privileges should you be accosted beyond these borders." The tall human at the end of the table shoves back his chair and stands to protest, but the half-elf female beside him places a hand on his arm and without a word he retakes his seat. Dulcet continues, "If you are to represent this council, you had best be properly equipped and so we offer you this retainer." A guardsman advances, carrying a small chest which he opens to reveal 2000 platinum coins. "Prepare yourselves to leave at first light and know that the blessings of this council are with you."

With Dulcet's final pronouncement the meeting comes to an unharmonius end. People are gathered in small groups discussing what has transpired, some in favour, others not.

Harvest
Tuesday June 28th, 2005 5:12:49 PM

Into the Culverwood.

Harvest Moon blows out a small puff of breath at the prospect ahead. They would need to gear up. But what to buy? Something more to heal their wounds. There could be no doubt about that. But what else?

She thinks about the new friends she's made today. The elves in the refugee camp. The children. They would be leaving early in the morning.

Harvest slips from her chair and makes her way up to the room. It is astoundingly clean and shows little of the damage from this morning's explosion of coinage. Finding pen and paper she sets herself down on the hardwood floor. Leaning over, she begins to write.
Dear Friends,

We are leaving Jarlwolf early on the morrow. We go to the Culverwood. Our purpose is to find the Greenmage, Grynntymm Deeproot. But it is my sincere hope that we may also be able to find some way to regain your homes."

Be well. While there is life, there is hope for a new day.

Someday we may meet again. Until that time, my best wishes go with you,

Harvest Moon.

The brown girl reads the note silently to herself. As she reads she listens to the voice within her head. It sounds of a different person. It sounds of Pasix.

Harvest places the pen upon the floor, and folds the piece of paper. First one-third over, then another third over the top of that. Retrieving the pen, she stands and leaves the room. Dinner would be soon. And the meeting with Elbereth. She would leave the letter with him, and, if it came to pass that her new friends came looking for her, he would give it over to them.

Arminas
Tuesday June 28th, 2005 5:38:57 PM

Arminas prepares for his trip into the Culverwood. Food can be gotten anywhere, but sometimes there is little time to forage. With that in mind, he restocks his provisions of hard tack and dried meats and fruit. Enough to last a week.

If we are gone longer, then I will just have to take time to forage and hunt.

Checking his bow, he unstrings it and oils the wood. Carefully he counts out his arrows, checking the tip and fletching on each one. He checks also to see that a spare string is at hand.

Sixty arrows should do, hopefully we will not have need for more.

Next, he sharpens his swords and daggers.

If anyone in the Swords of Light notice or listen, he adds:

"Most of the dangers in the Culverwood cannot be overcome with weapons, but with skill and knowledge of the Forest. I know Andrath and Lorth have gone into the Culverwood to the Spring of Alnair. It is close to the border, and the full dangers of the forest are not yet manifest. If need takes us deep into the forest, then I will await your request for aid. I will not lead unless asked, by dwarven voice."

Ashalan
Tuesday June 28th, 2005 5:56:38 PM

Prepare myself?

Ashalan looks through his meager belongings to make sure he has everything he needs for the journey, before realizing that he has no idea what he is going to need in the Culverwood.

Searching out Arminas he asks the elf what he should expect in the forest, and what if any provisions he will need.

Remembering the pincushion effect he endured in their last battle, Ash voices his opinion that another healing wand may be of some use to the party.

Adding ruefully to himself, Close at hand hopefully.

Any
Tuesday June 28th, 2005 8:39:41 PM

Any can see that this will not be the happy jont into the forest of his father's clan that he had envisioned, but it will still be a chance to further his knowledge of the world, and see this fabled land.

Like the traveler he is, Any has little to do to prepare to leave, save to saddle his horse and place his gear upon it. He takes this time to aid where he can those who have been un-homed, mending pots, gathering firewood, or singing a song to lighten the spirit.

He will also listen to the counsel of those he will be traveling with, to best know his roll, and to give or receive counsel about what should be taken with the group to aid their efforts.

Andrath
Tuesday June 28th, 2005 8:53:44 PM

Andrath asks, "What have we done with the treasure from the Crimson Fort and the fight with the Dread? Has it been shared around? If not, I will take it all to the Catacombs, and sell it. I will use this platinum to purchase two cure wands to be shared with the party. Is that alright?"

Bralin
Tuesday June 28th, 2005 10:03:05 PM

"by dwarven voice"

Bralin feels his blood rush as again Arminas seeks to bait him. Recalling his vow to Andrath, he says nothing.

Instead he turns to the rogue/wizard, and nods.
"We still have that taken from the Crimson Fort and Strongwind Castle. A single healing wand should be sufficient."

OOC - Al is taking the treasure into the Catacombs right now. Also, there's a big email conversation regarding what to get with the platinum.

Villemus
Wednesday June 29th, 2005 1:42:56 AM

Being utterly penniless as usual, the ragged wild-looking half-drow has nothing to prepare, so he spent the rest of the day rearranging his scant possessions.

Noticing that his painted tattoos looking atrifle faded, Villemus cheerful took out his inks and brushes and began painting intricated tattoos on himself. After amusing himself greatly with the inks, the half-drow pounced on all of his companions and tried to persuade them that having a few tattoos is a good idea.

DM Bob & Carla
Wednesday June 29th, 2005 7:53:38 AM

The party spends the night at Dulcet's and begins their preparations for their journey to the Culverwood. In the morning Elbereth arrives and provides each of the Swords of Light with a letter from the Pitchfork Council. It is neatly folded and sealed with a wax impression of three crossed pitchforks. Elbereth spends a few moments in quiet conversation with Dulcet before leaving and is happy to accept the letter from Harvest Moon.

Harvest
Wednesday June 29th, 2005 9:54:59 AM

The day begins early. Harvest sits in quiet meditation. She turns the rough wooden eye over in her hands. Again and again. Again and again. When the blessings of Gargul come to her, she accepts them willingly. And yet, ...

Thoughts of the past few days rush and dart through the musings of the small brown girl, still within her 17th year. As the thoughts and images come and go, it strikes her that the ones that touch her heart are not those of stirring combat. Nor are they the ones of righteousness. Or justice done. Rather, the things that touch her are the faces of people. Hildy and Lincoln. The boy Kiel. The elven children from the camp.

Harvest Moon looks down at the rough wooden eye resting in her hands. In it resides a life of duty to the dead. An important duty, to be sure. To shepherd the souls of the dead to their proper place in the great beyond.

Harvest Moon feels the frown upon her face.

She wraps around her waist, the chain to which the holy symbol is attached, and she cinches it secure. Then she pulls the folds of her bulky robe up to hang more comfortably around.

Taking up her haversack, she descends to collect her papers with the Swords of Light, and to begin their trek into the depths of Culverwood.

OoC: Question
DM's Bob and Carla, did you get the email I sent on Harvest's Catacombs purchase?

Lorth gladly accepts the task put before his friends. When he has time, he once again goes over all his equipment. He doesn't bother with any of the new loot or monies aquired, since his friends where so generous, last time loot was handed out.

Wednesday June 29th, 2005 6:18:00 PM

Any decides to check over his gear before leaving town, to see if there are any flaws or exceptions that he should correct before taking to the road again.

He cleans and oils all of his weapons and gear, then repacks everything to suit himself.

Having a few coins of his own still, he buys some dried fruit and nuts from a local, and then takes a seat in the shade of a tree nearby to enjoy his purchase and play his lute.

Arminas
Wednesday June 29th, 2005 9:28:56 PM

Arminas gathers his letter from the Pitchfork Council and stores it safely in his belt pouch.

Seeing that the items from Stormwind have been sold, Arminas decides to take one last trip to the Catacombs before heading out.

DM Bob & Carla-Delivery from the Catacombs
Thursday June 30th, 2005 12:22:44 AM

Now folds the lily all her sweetness up,
And slips into the bosom of the lake:
So fold thyself, my dearest, thou, and slip
Into my bosom and be lost in me.

A husky voice carries across the still air of the early morning as the group waits for tardy friends outside the gates of Dulcet's manor house. The voice belongs to a tall figure climbing the gentle incline from the town towards the group. Stooped over under the weight of an enormous pack, the half-orc doesn't see the party until she almost walks into Harvest Moon. "Sorry miss, didn't see you," apologizes the muscular female dressed in tan leggings, and a short tunic that reveals her well developed shoulders and arms. A crest above the embroidered name Rox identifies her as an employee of the catacombs.

"Be you the party heading off for the Culverwood?" she asks in a deep voice, scanning the elf, two humans, and half elf in front of her. Dropping the pack on the ground, she takes out a small book. Pushing black hair streaked with grey back from her face, she studies a page in the book then smiles revealing prominent teeth with tusked canines.

"Harvest Moon," she announces as she starts to unload wrapped parcels from the pack and lay them in a pile on the ground. There is a large soft squishy parcel, and a couple of oddly shaped ones. A long narrow box tied with string, and a thick parchment tube with a cap joins the pile. Finally the half-orc places a small hinged box in the monk's hand. "Wysp says you should find everything to your satisfaction, miss."

"Arminas Calaelen?" she asks, turning a few pages, "Wysp handled your transaction too?" Rox reaches into the pack and pulls out a carefully wrapped bundle, and hands it to the elf.

Her business done, the Catacombs staffer swings the pack up over her shoulder, waves goodbye, and soon disapppears down the trail.

Lorth waits patiently for his friends to go through their newly aquired belongings. He takes a seat and thinks about the horse he saw in his dream, attempting to remember it's features to get a picture of it in his head.

Harvest
Thursday June 30th, 2005 10:40:22 AM

Never in her life has she seen so much bounty. A sense of embarrassment at being the unworthy recipient of so many things wars with a welling thrill at the prospect. In part the joy of receiving wins the day, and a broad grin brightens Harvest Moon's face.

"Thank you," she calls after the half-orc. She carefully unwraps each package. After each is revealed, the brown girl saves the wrappings, folding them carefully for storage in her haversack.

She pulls on gauntlets, and flexes her fingers for the feel. A Periapt goes about her neck and a cloak over her shoulders. Leafing through the scrolls, she silently thanks the memory of Pasix for insisting on her studies.

Then, with a satisfied grin, she stores it all away.

"Perhaps on the way out of town, we could see to the supplies we may need as provided by the Council," she suggests.

Ashalan
Thursday June 30th, 2005 2:31:47 PM

Having lost his way, and most of the morning, in the many halls of the manor house. Ash finally joins the rest of the group as hey gather themselves for the journey.

Arriving in time to overhear Harvest's suggestion, Ash nods his head in agreement.

"And may I say that you have quite an eye for the goodies, seeing your purchases has given me some ideas for the next time I have some coin in my pocket."

Arminas sees the delivery coming and seems anxious about getting his items.

"Rox is it? Thanks so much for the delivery. Nobody does business like the Catacombs."

Arminas then unwraps his bundle, and smiles. He places a pearl in his inner pocket, carefully adjusting the flap so it cannot fall out. He then puts a ring on his finger and then dons a pair of gloves.

"Nights in the forest can sometimes be chilly, nice to have a pair of gloves."

He then walks over to a tall tree, and climbs up 15 feet. With a hopeful look, he then drops from the branch. After falling 5 feet, he starts to float slowly to the ground. (Either that, or he is very upset about his purchase).

Going back to the group, he hears Harvest comment on another batch of supplies.

"I agree, no use carrying lots of coin into the forest. Have you thought what to do if the worst case scenario comes about? Namely, meeting Parnoth in the forest? Perhaps we should think about something to protect ourselves from his acidic breath. Of course, if his breath does not kill us, we will probably be torn to shreds or taken as slaves. So either way."

Any
Thursday June 30th, 2005 3:38:47 PM

"I too could benefit from additional protection during battle, especially if we are expecting to battle a dragon. Although, I don't know what I could afford to add to what I currently possess."

Any takes a moment to watch his new friend Arminas float to the ground, obviously pleased with his purchases, as also appears the girl Harvest. He sits down on a convenient rock and begins to carve an intiate curl into a still blank section of his staff.

The "Swords of Light" get a late start for the Culverwood as Harvest and Arminus happily examine their purchases and integrate them into their gear. Shiny and clean in his well maintained gear, Lorth's mind wanders.Highlight to display spoiler: { Lorth thinks he hears the distant beat of galloping hooves, and a sighing on the wind...Tobiasz...Tobiasz...} Ash ponders the possibility of a few upgrades, while Any, Bralin, and Villemus consider the possibility of enjoining Parnoth himself in battle.

A few of Harvest's new friends from the refugee camp gather to watch the party set out. It is another fair day in the valley as the "Swords of Light" retrace their steps towards Merrydale. On passing the camp to the north of the town, folks notice it has grown in size as more tents and makeshift shelters have been added at the edges of the encampment. The Merrydale guardsmen are unloading rations from a cart, and distributing them to an eager crowd.

Having got a late start, it is early evening as the party gains the town. The lit windows frame the domestic scene of families at dinner. The town looks a little unkempt as flowers overgrow their planters, and gardens are a jumble of flowers and produce. Vines clamber over many a stone cottage, swathing the buildings in green.

The sun is setting when, the party enters the Culverwood via the Faeirie Trail and locates the small clearing at the center of which lies the spring of Alnair.

After caring for his horse and gear,Any sets about making camp, gathering wood, locating a spot for the privy, and starting a fire.
"I am a fair cook, and am willing to do so, unless someone has an objection."
Barring objections, Any will set about making a stew and fry bread, using the vegetables from the groups provisions while they are still available. He takes from his pack a small packet of herbs and spices, and soon the smell of the stew is spreading around the camp.
While the meal is cooking, he sits beside the fire playing his lute and keeping an eye on things.
Afterwards, he will locate a secure spot and bed down for the night.

Harvest

Rushing around.

Harvest dashes to some shops for some last minute provisioning with the money given them by the Pitchfork Council. When she's through, a great bulk of the money is still left over.

She waves goodbye to her new friends as the group heads out.

Back over the road.

Through Merrydale.

And ... Into the Culverwood.

Everything is greener than in the war ravaged lands of the Contested Kingdoms. It is very pleasant. In a way.

When they finally come to a small clearing and settle for the night, Harvest washes her face in the beautiful spring.

"If you wish," Harvest offers the bard from Stormwind Castle, "I can make food any flavor that you wish." From her haversack, she draws a wand. "But it is probably not as good as food prepared by your own hands."

On the way out of town, Arminas follows Harvest into the Catacombs. When she distributes the remaining gold, Arminas smiles with delight.

"There a just a few items I would like to take with me into the Culverwood. He picks up another ring, some white arrows and a couple of potions."

His shopping done, he hurries to catch up with the others. Ewan, the eagle, flys high above. As they pass Merrydale, strong emotions well up in Arminas.

"This is my hometown, though I hardly recognize it. I did not spend much of my youth in town, mostly I wandered into the Culverwood. That is really my home."

When they get to the clearing, Arminas scouts around the edge to see what creatures may have entered it recently. Though whether the deep emotions of coming once again into the Culverwood or other distractions, he feels that he is not doing his best tracking.

The smell of the stew entices him, and he joins his comrades at dinner.

"I think I will sleep in the trees, if one will have me. I should be able to remain hidden while I am up there. I can also look for intruders. I will sleep for a few hours, then awaken and watch during the dark of night."

He then walks around looking at the trees, trying to descern whether they seem likely to mind someone climbing them. Deciding that a large tree at the edge of the clearing might not mind, Arminas first walks around the tree looking for signs of fungus or vines attacking the tree. Carefully, he cuts any vines that look like they may harm the tree and removes any fungus he finds. He pats the tree, and says:

I mean you no harm, and only ask for a roost for the night.

He then swings onto the lowest branch and proceeds to climb. If he makes it to a high thick branch, he nestles into a fork in the tree and wraps his elven cloak around him. He gives a signal to Ewan to stand guard on an upper branch, and Arminas quickly falls asleep.

Upon reaching the clearing, the half-drow remarked, "So how are we gonna split the watch?"

Andrath
Monday July 4th, 2005 11:45:10 PM

Andrath gets his gear together, and heads with the party into the forest once again. He moves over beside Arminas, and says, "Without Merryn, we will need you to be our eyes and ears here in the forest. I will try to spot whatever I can, but can you keep your eye out for tracks and other signs?"

As they settle in for the night, Andrath notes, "We have some new members in our group, and I am not sure what each one's forte is anymore, so I can't set watches without knowing your skills. I am a rogue, Arminas is a ranger, Bralin is a fighter and a cleric, Harvest is a monk, and good Lorth is a paladin. What about you others?"

With the sun setting on the horizon, the party locates the small clearing at the center of which lies the spring of Alnair. Lorth and Andrath barely recognize the place where they had first met the greenmage, but then it had been late spring and there was still the nip of winter in the air. The clearing seems smaller, the trees taller, and the ferns and other plants of the understory more abundant. Moss covers the rocks at the edge of the pool and lilies and other water-weeds threaten to engulf the pool.

Lorth remembers the words of the greenmage, 'keep your fires small, burn only dead wood from the ground, and do no harm to the forest' as he carefully selects dry, dead branches with which to fuel Any's cooking fire. With Harvest's help, the newest member of the party makes a surprisingly tasty meal for his new friends. While the bard plays quietly on his lute, Andrath explores the party's known strengths, inviting the newest members to share their ideas on strategy.

The night is clear and surprisingly warm. Andrath and Lorth take the first watch of the night followed by Bralin and Villemus, then Ashalan and Any. The early morning watch is held by Arminus and Harvest Moon.

Lorth has another dream of the magical grey horse. This time the animal lets the paladin approach and doesn't run off. The man feels a powerful link with the animal.

Arminus is welcomed into the tree, and sleeps in its lofty embrace with the trust that a babe has sleeping in its mother's arms. On waking, the wood elf is surprised at how high off the ground he really is. Did the tree grow taller in the night? (Climb Check DC 15 or take 10 pts dmg) to get down. Arminas awakes to take watch in the early morning hours. The tree seems to have grown taller, and that fact only brings joy to Arminas. He looks down at the small monk, doing watch far below. If anything were to attack the group, Arminas will fill it with arrows before he lets it near Harvest.

Looking down, he sees movement along the path. Notching an arrow, he points it at the stranger as he trys to determine if it is friend or foe.

I must be careful, I almost killed Lt. Orrin by mistake.

Suddenly, he realizes that it is Rox, carrying a heavy pack. Arminas gives the tree a gentle tap and steps off the branch into the air. With a sudden drop, he quickly slows and begins to slowly drift to the ground.

"I must thank you for this ring. The ability to float slowly to the ground will come in very handy. I wished for the ability to do so while at Stormwind Castle. Have you brought new supplies?

By the way, what was that beautiful song about the peacock you were singing?"

Arminas looks through the pile and collects his new purchases.

Finding the elf Ash explains of how last night during his watch he had time to think on where he might fit in the tactics of the group.

"Much of my training as a monk of Alemi has instilled the importance of speed and nimbleness. In battle I should have the abilty to flank where others may not, to support our comrades should they need it, and to reach and subdue enemy spell casters before they have time to fry us. These are just my thoughts, you may have other uses for my talents when the time comes."

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday July 7th, 2005 8:01:49 AM

The party crowds around the statuesque half-orc from the catacombs as she metes out her parcels. [OOC if you have confirmed sales from the catacombs your items are here]. Rox is pleased that her song has elicited such a positive response. "The song was taught to me by a bard in exchange for pulling him out of a fast flowing river. I do not know it's origins, but it is lovely, isn't it?" She is also quick to decline to offer of breakfast " Thank you for your kindness, but, I have 'miles to go before I sleep'. I wasted several hours just trying to find this spot, the trail has overgrown so."

The half-orc finishes her business and with amazing alacrity, a few long strides and a backwards wave, dissappears down the path.

Andrath is correct. The pool of water that is the Spring of Alnair was at least several meters across the last time he and Lorth were here. Now only the center of the pool is unobscured by the tree roots, creeping mosses, and floating vegetation that threaten to engulf it.

As the sun rises over the Culverwood it soon becomes apparent just how warm a day it will become. The air is full of moisture and the rich earthy smells of the forest. Birds sing from almost every tree and large mosquitoes buzz overhead but few actually bother the party. It is difficult to see much beyond 20 feet from the spring through the dense foliage and many of the vines that climb the trees and shrubs open their blooms for the day.
