OOC Firn'gaer
Sunday June 19th, 2005 7:50:53 AM

I'd agree with Peerimus with what we keep and what is sold. Though Firn'gaer would take one of the Rary's Telepathic Bond and the Antimagic field as part of his cash split and save 10%.

Firn'gaer is interested in 1)Headband of Int +6 and 2)Hand of Glory.

Still With Me? (DM/Al)
Sunday June 19th, 2005 10:10:54 AM

Yorrick gives a high plaintive moan as Peerimus returns to human form. Even as Peerimus wraps his neck in a hug, Yorrick presses into his friend's body, almost a cub trying to hide within his mother's warmth. Peerimus is jostled and nearly pushed to the ground.

Ilsidur touches the greatly injured bear, bringing further calm as well as healing.

Luke, with head cocked to one side, watches with curiosity. "What's up?" he barks.

That's a question Savin asks as well. " ... and we haven't even gotten anywhere yet."

"Indeed we have not," adds Celine, walking the remaining distance down the ramp. "We are on our way to Trash Level. Is that not where we were headed?" she inquires of Lorbius.

"Celine," the Lord's voice trembles with emotions barely held in check, "I told you to remain in your father's compound."

"Yes," the Lady of House Stizein replies, "and I chose to follow instead."

"You disobeyed my command." Lord Lorbius strides toward her, weapons clutched within his hands, knuckles white with the grip upon them.

Lady Celine stands her ground. "You will need me, Lorbius. You seek my brother, do you not? I know my brother in ways that you do not. And I can care for myself. You know this. Why do you leave me behind?"

"You placed yourself in danger." Lorbius stands toe to toe with Celine. Tall as she may be, he towers over her. The veins in his thickly muscled arms bulge. His shoulders tremble.

Niobe watches the interaction from the sidelines.

With a cry, he sweeps her up in his arms, crushing her to his lips. Her arms too, come around his neck, returning his passionate embrace.

"I can refuse you nothing, Celine," Lorbius mummers into the red mane of her hair. Then he draws back. And he winks. "This is a problem."

Both nobles turn eyes toward the group, as though in mutual and silent acknowledgement of the breech of social etiquette that passion has visited upon them.

"You know me well, Celine," Lorbius rumbles. "I seek your brother on Trash Level. It is he and the acts that he has committed that stand between us. I would have explanations from him. If necessary, apologies."

As the Children of Chaos quickly attend to the contents of the box delivered by the Catacombs, the Lord looks out over the devastation wrecked upon the buildings of Merchant Level. The square is quiet. But the distant sounds of screams, fire, and the occasional ring of steel drift in upon the air. Shadowed figures move about in the nearby streets.

"And yet ... Celine, all of you, ill times have come to Floating City. I feel it with a thing deep within me. This is an evil, an anger more terrible, more encompassing than I have every felt before. If you follow me, know that you may follow to your deaths."

Lorbius sweeps the tip of his flail at the carnage that lays about them. "It speaks badly for things that such creatures have come as far up within the City as Merchant Level. It speaks worse that there is no presence of the City Guard at this critical place upon the Central Stairs."

"We must round the pillar to the far side and descend to Barracks Level. Perhaps there we will learn more of what occurs within the lower levels and why the guard have not established a presence here."

"On Fence Level, I know a man who may be able to tell us more about Lord Tarleth's location. If such chaos has been wrought on Merchant Level, Trash Level can only be much more so, and we can ill afford a search."

Lord Lorbius takes in the faces of each of the Children of Chaos. "Are you still with me? Do we descend to Trash Level?"

Niobe (73/73HP, 19 AC)
Sunday June 19th, 2005 3:15:14 PM

Niobe turns half away from the kissing couple and rolls her eyes; stifling a chuckle so it only comes out as a very low, certainly brief snort of a laugh (basically an expulsion of air through the nose).

The rogue turns back to face Lorbius and Celine. She chimes in with:
"Before we go tromping around through plant territory shouldn't we find that Elf druid... Prionel? He might know how to take care of the plant trouble and make our travel to the next level much easier."

Niobe will look over the Catacombs delivery with the others. She will eagerly wait to hear what she might get from the haul.

Sly and Luke
Monday June 20th, 2005 6:27:36 AM

Luke growl at Lord Lorbius, showing his teeth "GROW! BARK!" Ready to jump at the man as he takes Celine into his arm!, That is untill he hears Sly's voice.

Sly who is coming out from under some rock ans rose peddles, tell Luke "Down Luke! Leave the Lord alone, the Lady does not want a resque right now. Now Come and help me with this bag!"

Luke and Sly has found a big bag of gold for the party, Sly opens the bag! There inside is and there is 8,810gp.

Monday June 20th, 2005 6:53:31 AM

[OOC: Do we want to divide this via e-mail.]

"We need to quickly handle this so we can continue." The wizard says.

"Niobe," Firn'gaer says glancing over to Yorrick and Peerimus, "I think that he, like our own druid, it effected by whatever is happening. If he us unable to control the instability in nature as Peerimus has, then he will be as much of a danger as the plant and plant-creatures that are overgrown within the city now. I will differ to Lord Lorbius on this though."

The wizard takes note of the shadows in the distance. Hoping that perhaps it's injured citizens looking for a safe place, but deep down he doesn't hold out much hope.

Turning to Lord Lorbius and Lady Celine, "We decend."

Niobe to Firn'gaer
Monday June 20th, 2005 10:53:43 AM

Niobe stares at Firn'gaer for a moment or two, not quite comprehending what the wizard meant.

"I am not talking about Prionel controlling the plant or allying with it. I am talking about getting some information on the plant and it's behaviour; or at least previous behaviour," Niobe tells Firn'gaer. "We will be far better off with some knowledge rather than no knowledge at all, like we have now."

"I can probably go alone and talk with him," Niobe finishes with a question for Firn'gaer, "incedentally do you mean that Peerimus and Yorrick are a danger now?"

Firn'gaer to Niobe (illegal second)
Monday June 20th, 2005 11:31:55 AM

"Honestly I don't know, but Yorrick makes me nervious." He says looking at Peerimus. "No offense, he requires constant handling and he's been even hard for you these last days in the city. He seemed more feral and prone to rage than before." Firn'gaer says to Niobe. "I have faith in Master Peerimus' ability to control this additional strength and Yorrick. I'm just concerned is all."

"I don't know how far this other druid is, but the city's too dangerous to travel alone. If you go, Savin will want to go and we can not afford to move through the city weakened. We'll have to rely on Lord Lorbius and Lady Celine's knowledge in this matter along with Master Peerimus."

Peerimus [AC 22 HP 73/73] and Yorrick [AC 19 HP 73/73]  3d8(4+6+7)+10=27
Monday June 20th, 2005 4:14:51 PM

Peerimus stays close to Yorrick and casts another healing spell. [CSW 27 to Yorrick]. "I am with you Lord Loribus, though I fear the reality is that your city may be beyond saving. More than a dozen orcworts are pulling this city to the shore. It seems the Wood is also sending creatures across these great vines to invade the city and everything below this level very well may be lost."

Seeing Sly produce the bag, "You are a wonder my elven friend, indeed a wonder."

Niobe's and Firn'gaer's side chat turns the druids head. "As much as I would like to talk to Prionel, I thought we were in this current state to assist Lord Loribus in his journey to this cities lower levels. I can hold the plants off for about 100 minutes during our journey. Everyone will have to stay within 10' of me for this safety." Peerimus then looks to Lord Loribus, "This should allow us much faster passage through the open areas. As long as the barrier is not forced against a plant creature it will prevent any from being able to harm us."

The topic then turns to Yorrick and the heightend power of the area. "Yes Mother and Father are far more active and influencing then I have ever seen. It is as the old days and tales have it. When in natural form I can hear the call that I know Yorrick hears all too well. Your concern is warranted Firn'gaer

Monday June 20th, 2005 10:06:56 PM

Ilsidur listens as the party discusses the plant problems. He smiles as the two city nobles kiss, clearly revealing the source of their tension. "Do not feel shame, Lord and Lady. Affection at this time is very appropriate, since if these evil plants are any indication, such opportunities may not present themselves in the near future."

"Lord, it seems that we are all willing to accompany you to find the Lady's brother. Please believe, we do not fear death, but we would like to know more about what to expect. Most of us are strangers to this city, and maybe you can tell us a little more about the place?"

Green Hell/Barracks Level (DM/Al)
Monday June 20th, 2005 10:44:02 PM

Lorbius nods and indicates the northeasterly direction around the curve of the great pillar of the Central Stairs. Celine falls in, silently behind and to the right. For a brief moment, her eyes climb the side of the pillar, taking in the heavy growth of tangled rose vines.

"If this druid, Prionel is in Lord Perimon's custody," Lorbius says as he continues around the pillar, eyes scanning the streets, "then he is either held in private quarters on Gold Level or he is held within a cell in the Gaol on Barracks Level just below us. In the former case, he would be behind us. And, even were we to attempt to go back for him it is doubtful we would easily discover his location."

"If he is in Gaol, then it is possible that we may inquire on our way down to Fence Level. I would, however, not count on his release. Lord Perimon is very powerful, and the City Guard would be ill advised to release the druid into our custody without authorization."

Lorbius says nothing about Peerimus and the changes he is going through, but, as the party walks along behind him meting out the gear delivered from the Catacombs, his eye falls upon the druid and his companion and in his look there is a question.

"We will address situations as we encounter them," he says. "Perhaps an opportunity will arise to free this, Prionel."

Celine pets Luke on the head as the party marches along. "It is a large city Master Dwarf," the noble Lady says in response to Ilsidur's question. "There would be many things to tell. Suffice to say, that we go to the lowest level. On Trash Level live the poorest of the poor. Life is said to be intolorably hard there. And," her eyes look off into the distance, "it is where the criminal element finds its home."

The trip to the other side of the pillar is uneventful. Down various streets occasional figures or groups of figures can be seen moving about. They move slowly, as though lacking purpose. None of them draws near.

The small group once again enters a downward ramp of the Central Stairs. Again, rose vines cover the floor and encase the floor and ceilings. Again, when they reach the bottom, there is no presence of The Guard.

This time, however, the city, Barracks Level, is in flames. The air is filled with a dark acrid smoke that cuts off light from the Sky Ceiling above. Screams of fear, death and dying rise from the smoke like specters. The sound of fighting rides like a pale horse over all.

Celine draws the edge of her cloak up and covers her mouth. Lorbius takes but a look into the smoke and confusion before heading off around the great pillar again. "We cannot stay," he says, "we would be lost within the smoke."

Not three hundred feet further on their journey around the pillar, the sound of combat draws near. From out of the smoke emerges a tableau; five figures stand back to back surrounded by six others. The attackers raise hands to club at the five defenders. Blows rain down, but the swords of the defenders are quick as well. And, in the time it takes to cover the ground toward the melee, all six of the attackers are downed.

Of the five figures two are clearly soldiers of the Guard. One is a middle aged woman, clearly the senior of the two. The other is a young man, there is a large bruise on his forehead and he appears nearly in shock.

"Lorbius of House Ursidae," the lord names himself, "and Captain of the Overlord's Auxiliary Rangers. Report, please."

"Corporal Enid Sconce, Sir," the woman raises her sword in salute, "we've an invasion from the Trash Level. The slipped in from somewhere down there and overran Fence before we knew it. Most of the Guard is down that way trying to hold them off. But the plants have managed to slip through from places we know nothing about. The Corps of Mages is fighting outside. I hear it's giant trees, Sir. So, when they got in up here, Sir. We were desperate. They were pressing us back. We ... we set of an alchemical bomb."

Lorbius looks up with narrowed eyes into the swirling black smoke.

"The good thing, Sir, is that we think we got most of them with it, Sir. At least it broke their ranks."

"Very well, take up positions at the emergency vents," the lord orders. "And open them to clear the smoke away. Be prepared to close them again at the first sign of attack."

"We are for Trash Level." The lord's voice rises, almost a rallying cry. "Perhaps our presence there will do more good than we had expected."

"You're headed for Trash?" The voice comes from one of the three other defenders, a woman with short cut blonde hair and blue eyes as cold as winter ice. Focus now drawn to the three it is apparent that, though they carry guard weapons, they are clearly not of the Guard. They have a hard look. The look of prisoners. And more.

"If you're headed for Trash," the woman says, "we're going with you."

Sly comes over to ask about the bodies. "Sly I'll tell ya, I don't like it. I'd say some kind of poison. Could be from that bomb or it could a natural toxin."

Firn'gaer continues to examine the bodies trying to determine the cause of the green tint to the skin. He wonders if the tint is caused by the Alchemical Bomb, which he assumes is some type of poison.

"Excuse me, Corporal," he says, "Does that bomb cause the coloring of the skin?"

Just as a precaution, Firn'gaer will drink a Potion of Neutralize Poison.

Green Hell/Fence Level (DM/Al)  d20+6=18 d20+14=26
Tuesday June 21st, 2005 10:45:01 PM

The group cannot help but notice the green cast imbued in the skin of the those that lie slain upon the ground. And, why had they been attacking this small group for in the first place? The green tint is like nothing anyone has seen or heard of before. On either the Northern or the Southern continents.

"No," the Corporal Sconce says in reply to Firn'gaer's question. "The Green Ones began popping up not a week ago. I hear it started with the group that went over to the Perimon settlement on the shore of the Crying Woods. Though I hear some say that it comes from touching white flowers. Or from drinking the green goo down on Trash Level."

"I was down with the squad that took up the first of them. Local group, Crimson Shields, had slaughtered a whole lot of them. Only a few left. Those that were alive we took to Alemi. I hear the priests managed to cure them. Disease or something."

"They don't move fast," she glances in the direction of her shell shocked private. "But they hit something awful hard."

"Can you make it back to your unit, Corporal?" Lord Lorbius asks. The woman nods, taking the man's arm over her shoulder.

"I'd watch out for them, M'Lord," she whispers and darts her eyes at the three who are not of the Guard. "Prisoners broke from the Gaol. We've no one to put them back. At least they fight well."

Lorbius turns to the three escaped prisoners. "You may come, if you will fight. Such is our need. And yet, should you remain when this is done and gone, I will see you back where you belong. Is that understood?"

"We do not ask for aide that is not given freely and without want of boon in return." Lorbius very deliberately avoids a look at Niobe. "Your motivation derives from a desire for the common good." The Lord towers over the three rogues. "What you do now does not expunge your past crimes in my eyes. Is that understood?"

Luke, meanwhile, has no hear for such serious talk. With tongue lolling, he asks the Lady Celine for a kiss. The noble Lady's chuckle is a deep throaty purr. She wags a finger at the wardog and points a covert finger at the nearby Lord.

Savin looks quite ready to receive healing.

Of the three rogues it is the woman with the short blonde hair who answers Ilsidur's question. "We're no one in particular," she smiles. "We live on Trash Level. It's our home." (Spot vs DC26 for the following: Highlight to display spoiler: {On of the others, a man with a short goatee watches the questioning intently.} Sense Motive vs DC18 for additional: Highlight to display spoiler: {Though the woman does the talking, this man seems to be the real leader of the group.})

The two City Guards disappear into the black smoke. And the party of ten, now swollen to thirteen, continues around the curve of the great pillar. Bodies litter the ground in greater and greater frequency as they progress toward the next ramp of the Central Stairs. Littered amongst the rose vines are bodies of soldiers male and female some rent limb from limb, crumpled mounds of plant creatures, hacked and severed Assassin Vines, some of the green skinned people, and an occasional orc, strange and purple in color.

At the entrance to the ramp of the Central Stairs, bodies lie in heaps as tall as Yorrick's eye. Flesh and plant mix in evidence of the desperate stand taken to hold the line here, at the portal to Barracks Level. Such a cost. And all in vein. Not a thing moves. Only the dead remain. The smell of blood mingles with the scent of flowering blooms.

The dead lie scattered across the floor of the ramp as well. The smoke quickly clears as the group descends down one broad avenue and the next. Soon enough, the light of Fence Level glows down ramp in the huge rectangle of the exit. Lorbius halts and carefully scans the scene.

"There. And there. And there." He points his flail. And where he points, the thicker trunks of Assassin Vines resolve from amidst the twine of roses. Further out into the square mounds of vegetable matter from the large to the very huge amble and undulate in search of prey. Across the square a squad of the purple orcs exit a building and run in formation down the street and out of sight. Over their heads they carry what appears to be an unconscious woman.

"Celine," Lorbius rumbles, and the fear for her well-being is plain in his voice. She steps to his side. "I am here," she says, "and I will remain here. By your side." Lorbius nods. Their eyes meet and something passes between them. And when they turn to the group, the two are greater than they were before as man and woman.

"We will have to fight our way through," Lorbius calls. "Do not stop if it is not necessary. There may be no end to them."

"Prepare yourselves!"

Savin  d20+13=23 d20+9=29
Tuesday June 21st, 2005 11:51:37 PM

Savin knocks on Ilsidur's shoulder and asks, "I would like some healing. My style tends to put me in danger's path.

The monk will then take a closer look at the green people. It looks like they have been infected by something. Almost like the plants are taking their bodies over. This is very bad. If they can infect the citizens of this city, then they can attack from within and without.
We must find the root cause of this or I fear the city is doomed."

Savin prepares himself for battle and wonders if his monk training is up to this.

Niobe smiles at Savin as he shows off the cloak. She nods in approval, "yes it matches the color of your eyes very nicely."

***********************************************

Niobe grins wryly as Lorbius deliberately does not look at her. As much as the lord didn't want to hear it she only spoke what she believes is the truth.
She doesn't want to be here - so far away from her home city/homelands that she cannot say for sure she will even get to return to there. These people don't mean anything to her, she feels no real connection with them; what if the people back home [the Southern Continent] are faring even worst?

Niobe sees the man with the goatee taking an intense interest in the talking, but she fails to get a sense that he might be the leader of the small group (Spot 27, Sense Motive 14).

Niobe doesn't say anything further to the locals as they travel on; unless they ask her anything or initiate a conversation.
She remains ready to face any upcoming scirmishes they might encounter. She stays near Savin as they move on through the besieged city.

Peerimus's brow furrows as the woman from Trash Level talks, but he holds his tongue. The Group moves through and continues thier descent and eventually sees the lay of the battlefield. Peerimus finds himself chuckling slightly at the Lord's proclamation and shakes his head side to side.
"I'm afraid you are incorrect Loribus. We merely have to walk through staying within 10' of myself and not directly encountering the plants creatures. The protections of Mother Wold will keep them quite at bay and from harming us. My concern is how to safely get all of you through. The field will not be large enough and Yorrick and I can outdistance most of the group."

The druid then levels a much serious gaze at the three new comers. "If you value your lives you should not accompany us."

Peerimus surveys the avenue of thier route for plan B, walling off the greatest amount of enemies with a wall of thorns as he casts Barkskin on himself and Yorrick with the help of the Lessr Rod of Extend

Sly fall behind the first rank but before the Cleric and the wizard. As he follows he looks back at the Comvices, the one with the goat tee, Sly is leary of him, he does not know why but has this feeling.

Sly calls Luke, "Come with me! Let Yurrick heal a little bit." All the time sly watches the breaded one.

Luke come and walks beside Sly, "Friend Yurrick Sick?"

Sly answers his Dog, "I think he needs rest and he'll be alright?"

Firn'gaer will place the better Headband on and stow the old one.

"I can probably get that woman over there to safety." He says pointing at the unconscious woman being carried by the purple orcs. "It's a long way, but my spell has pretty good distance. If no one objects I'll try and grab her." He says. If there are no objections, Firn'gaer finishes the spell and the woman in the orcs hands starts to be pulled away from their grasp.

Idea is to use Telekinesis to grab the woman and carry her here. She, if willing or unable to decide if unconscious, will be lifted up 20 feet before being moved towards our position. The Disarm check is +17 and max weight is 250 pounds. If she resists the Will save is DC22

"Here you go, Savin," Ilsidur says, as he casts his healing spells on the monk. [OOC: Heal Savin for 36 hp total.] "Will that be enough?"

Looking across the crowded room, Ilsidur says, "I have three spells at my command, one of which I can use to move up to myself and 3 others up to 800', a second one which I can use to teleport myself and up to 3 others, and the third which I can use to affect all of us Children of Chaos, which will give us all freedom of movement and air walk for the next 100 minutes. I suggest I cast the free movement/air walk spell, and all of us except Peerimus can simply walk across the room at the ceiling. We can throw the grappling vines right off, if they can reach the ceiling. Peerimus, you can excort your bear and the other 5 with you through the plant creatures. Will this work?"

Savin feels the healing energy flow through his body and loves the sensation of watching bruises and cuts fade away. "Thank you kind sir," he says to the dwarf. "Some day you are going to have to teach me how to do that!

I like the idea of the freedom of movement, but don't get to confident. Those vines still can pack a wallop!"

Green Hell/The Gauntlet - Round 01 (DM/Al)
Wednesday June 22nd, 2005 10:41:56 PM

Worries run through the group as each in his or her way considers the threats, both within as well as without the group. The three rogues stay in a tight formation, weapons held ready. They say nothing in response to Peerimus' warning.

"I know the spell to which you refer, Druid Peerimus," Lord Lorbius replies in a tight whisper as the group moves out from the protection of the ramp and into a large square. "It would be very helpful to have such a spell at this time. But, if they come enmasse, it may not hold out for very long."

Celine stays close at the lord's side. The green monsters wander aimlessly within the square. Two Assassin Vines lie dormant at the sides of the exit. Two hang down from high above.

Two Shambling Mounds begin striking at each other, fighting in the plaza.

For a moment, it seems as though the group could go unnoticed.

Firn'gaer spies the woman being hustled off by the cadre of purple orcs. With a quick spell, he plucks the woman's body from out of the hands the orcs. The woman drifts slowly through the air. Back toward the group.

The orcs make no sound. Their eyes follow the woman. And then they follow as well.

Almost at the same time, the rose vines around the two Assassin Vines at the sides of the exit come alive and begin to writhe, catching at anything that might come their way. The Assassin Vines move in their slow methodical way toward the group. In the plaza a mound raises up, and it too comes in the direction of the group.

[ OoC: Approximately one hour has elapsed since the battle on Merchant Level. ]

Ilsidur: Sorry, but the MOVE AT WILL spell is not now available. You didn't come up with the idea until well after morning. You may prepare it tomorrow if you wish. Speaking of which, I don't have Today's spell list from you. Please post it.

Green Hell/The Gauntlet - Round 02 (DM/Al)  10d6(3+6+2+6+3+5+1+4+2+1)=33
Thursday June 23rd, 2005 10:44:05 PM

"We go first to see a man I know." Lord Lorbius takes in the mood of the plant monsters around them with what appears a practiced eye. "He runs an inn. It is straight ahead," he points with his flail, "up Crook Street and a right on Dagger Point. It is not far ... under normal circumstances."

(Spot vs. DC30 to catch the following: Highlight to display spoiler: {The rogues exchange meaning full covert glances. The place as described appears to have some meaning for them.})

"Stay close, we may need to move quickly," says the noble.

Firn'gaer holds his focus upon the woman across the square. He pulls her closer. But the progress is slow. Maddeningly so. The purple orcs easily catch up with the floating woman. They follow with arms raised upward to take her back and resume their task. But she is too high for them to reach. So they follow along below in perfect silence.

Peerimus conceives a plan. He directs Yorrick, who's eyes are on the various plant creatures roaming the square. The bear almost fails to heed. But finally pads over the rose vines to a place behind Niobe.

Ilsidur readies his axe and shield. Operating in full defense, he prepares to move.

Then Peerimus calls up a spell of abjuration. What happens next is surely something he was not anticipating. The spell, normally invisible and of tighter bounds, springs up as an angry orange shield nearly twice its normal dimensions. Still, the druid moves out into the square. The anti-plant shell moves out and over the nearest Assassin Vine's area of entangling rose vines. They writhe and clutch heedless of the druid's magic.

The Assassin Vine itself rises up to greet the orange shell. It moves foreward the few meager feet that nature allows it. It stretches out its self, and is repelled by the shell. Again it tries. And again it is repelled. The vine bends and sways against the surface of the shell. It acts as though ...

... it is very much attracted to it.

With this realization it now becomes clear that the plant creatures in the square have ceased their own meaningless diversions and are, as one, converging upon the group. The two shambling mounds stop in mid battle and turn, drawn by the energy of the shell. Like moths to a flame, Shambling Mounds, Huge Tendriculos, Assassin Vines, all of the creatures from throughout the square now converge upon the group.

Lorbius pushes Celine into the protecting confines of the shell. The rogues too rush in and gather closely around Peerimus.

"Xia Roks Beiggor!" Lady Celine weaves her hands together, and a small bead of light flies from her into the midst of the nearby plant creatures to the west where it blossom outward in an explosive roar of fire.

Note: The entire area is covered in Rose Vines. They make charging, running and tumbling impossible for all that do not have either Freedom of Movement or Woodland Step.

Friday June 24th, 2005 3:07:30 PM

Peerimus arches his eyebrows at the unexpected display of Mothers Power. I am obviously connected to a much greater degree than the others and my call to Father and Mother is heard clearer. It must be related to the Fey king and thus to all about us as well. I will dwell on that later, first to lead the plants away... The thought trails off as the others seek refuge within the sphere instead of circling left as informed. Peerimus' eyes narrow, his anger surfaces briefly as Celine and others move next to him, "I can not advance the field without collapsing it now. That is why i did not want any to follow me, but go left." Peerimus tries quickly to put down the unexpected heat in his own voice. "We are now forced to stand here and engage everything, I hope everyone brought plenty of spells. We've roughly an hour and a half to live."

Peerimus makes a low long whistle, like teh wind across a deep bog and sits calmy down and begins trying recall all he can of Assassin Vines, Tendriculous', Shambling Mounds and Orcworts. A Solution would surely present it self.

Niobe drops back behind Yorrick, as the plant creatures approach and begin to cluster around the orange hemisphere of Peerimus' Anti-plant shell.

Focus still on the woman floating slowly across the square, Firn'gaer moves forward, into the protection of the shell. The unconscious woman comes 20 feet closer. The silent purple orcs, arms and eyes raised up toward her, follow beneath.

From the corner of his eye, Firn'gaer catches the teeming writhe of the entangling rose vines. They seem unaffected by Peerimus' protective shell.

Peerimus sits, his mind runs through a catalog of strengths and weaknesses that the plants may have. They all have their various vulnerabilities, none that the party has not already seen exhibited, though. One thing that they all have in common, however, is that they move more slowly than creatures of the flesh. In general, they rely upon camouflage, their ability to blend with the forest around them, to take down their prey.

Straight ahead, up the street that is the group's eventual path, another huge shambling mount appears. From how far away are these things being drawn? How many more could there be? The purple Orcs are the only plants that appear unaffected by the lure of the magic shell. They seem singularly fixed upon the floating woman.

Peerimus whistles for Yorrick. A common communication between the two, but this time, Yorrick makes no response. Instead, he remains with Niobe, outside the angry orange shell of magic. The bear paces, back and forth, his eyes reveal the tension within as the plants converge.

Savin quickly threads a way through the reach of the large plant monsters, skirting the edge of entangling rose vines. None of the plants appear to pay him much notice. They are all intent upon the glowing anti-plant shell.

Sly Foxx draws his longsword as he enters the magic shell and walks to Lorbius' side. As he nears, a limb from the shambling mound reaches out to slam the elven Bladesinger ... but it encounters the anti-plant shell instead. The limb draws back, and a shuddering chatter, part pain part ecstasy, rolls through the body of the shambling mound.

"We will fight together," Sly says to the Lord. And then his sword lends action to his words. (Hit S7 AC31, Damage 9hp) The bladesinger's longsword strikes true, leaving a long gash through leaves and twigs.

"Fight. Together," Luke echoes, rushing through the crowd in the center of the shell. Two shamblers strike at him as he comes, but, again, they are stymied by the magic of the shell. Luke reaches out and bites down. (Hit S8 AC30, Damage 5hp) Luke savages the plant, ripping loose a vine. "Roughage." he says with his mouth full.

"Yes, my friend," Lorbius replies. "Let us clear away these plant vermin. Flail and Kukri strike through the anti-plant shell at the vulnerable shambler. (Hit S7 AC25, AC30, AC17, AC16, AC34, Damage 15+12+12= 39hp) The shambling mound falls into a pile of loose vegetable matter.

"How many can you take with you?" Celine shouts back to the dwarven cleric. "My powers will allow me to bring three others besides myself." The noble lady spares a brief glance to count the numbers. "It may be possible to teleport one group and then fly back for the rest."

"Shio bilor," Celine pulls energy from above and shoots them from her fingertips in the form of scorching rays. (Touch S5 AC26, AC22, Damage 12+15 = 27hp) A crackle of flame goes up, leaving a large burnt section on a shambling mound.

The plant creatures make a beeline for the anti-plant shell. Then they begin sliding along the outside, touching tentatively at it as they go. Several, are just beginning to notice the fleshy nourishment that also stands waiting.

As the Assassin Vines move, the area of entangling rose vines move with them. The rogues mill nervously, jockeying for positions outside the are of entanglement and yet well clear of the towering plant monsters just outside the shell.

Ilsidur starts from his amazment to find a big shambler uncomfortably close. He heads for the safety of the Anti-Plant Shell.

Niobe speaks to Yorrick in a calming voice, while she sinks two arrows into the Assassin Vine running it's leaves up and down the Anti-Plant Shell. (A1) Milky white sap drips to the ground as the arrows sink deep.

Still seated upon the ground, Peerimus casts a spell, then swivels to put a question to Yorrick.

The bear, standing before Niobe, opens his mouth wide and shakes his great head. The fur and muscle along his neck shudders with the motion. Highlight to display spoiler: {"You ask me to guard. Then you tell me to leave woman Niobe and come. You want me to come now? Leave Niobe?"} Yorrick moans in complaint. Highlight to display spoiler: {"Many plants. They want to eat us. They will eat us. I feel different. Bad. No. Different."}

Oddly enough, Niobe, though she does not understand the words of the language, does understand a great deal of the meaning.

Firn'gaer draws the woman further. He, apparently, possesses the power of translocation as well.

"Then I will take three fighters." Pointing to Sly and Lorbius, Celine chooses the two currently engaged with the plant monsters. "And ... you." She selects one of the rogues, a large half-orc. "We will appear behind the purple orcs and cut them down. Hold the woman in place. Join us when we have her."

Luke rips into the shambler again. (Hit AC17) This time he misses. The wardog snarls. "You going?" he asks, Sly.

Sly turns with shield and sword in his famous windmill strike. (Hit S2 AC19, AC17) "You distract me," he replies to Luke. "Yes, I'm going to rescue the woman." The bladesinger moves five feet to join Celine.

"Be right with you." Lorbius strikes with both weapons. (Hit S10 AC28, AC35, AC27, AC20, AC43, Damage 10+9+15+15+10= 59hp) The shambler flies appart under the lord's assault. "I am ready to go."

Celine, Lorbius, Sly, and the half-orc all link hands. Celine eyes Yorrick and Niobe standing outside the Shell. "Ensure that the bear wishes to go," she warns, and then she begins chanting. (47) The four suddenly appear 30 feet north of the purple orcs.

The giant plants all creep and shamble closer. The rustle of their vegetable parts as they scrap across the bricks of the square fills the air. A shambler moves around the perimeter of the Shell. And, almost as an afterthought, swings at Yorrick. (Slam AC23, Damage 11hp) The branch strikes Yorrick against a shoulder. No blood is drawn, but beneath the fur a the muscle is most certainly bruised.

Then ... the Wold shifts again ...

A tremendous creak becomes a splitting roar and the floor jumps, shudders, and then pounds upward like a giant hammer. (Reflex Save vs DC21 or take 1d8 hp damage and be thrown to the ground Prone. Celine 21, Lorbius 28, Sly 13, Sly takes 4hp damage.) There is a great burst of flame as an Assassin Vine falls from the side of the pillar, dropping down on top of the Anti-Plant Shell. When the flame dies, all that remains is a stick of twisted charcoal.

When Wold stills, not a single plant is left standing, with the odd exception of the purple orcs. In the distant places throughout the level, dust rises from the rubble of buildings that were too frail to withstand the strain.

The entire City is tilted at a forty-five degree angle.

Ilsidur (AC25, 97/107 hp)  d20+4=8 d8=2
Monday June 27th, 2005 10:18:35 PM

Ilsidur falls to the ground, but takes no damage due to his adamantine armour. He stands up and moves over beside Luke, and R1 and R2. "Niobe, run over to me and I will move us all over by Celine." [OOC: Next round...]

Savin 90/95  d20+11=31
Monday June 27th, 2005 10:28:56 PM

Savin easily keeps his feet and sees the others appear next. He is tempted to engage but decides that might be just throwing his life away and his friends will need him later. He takes a scappers over to join the 4 who just popped up at BL181. He should make it easily with a double move.

OOC No worries Al. We all have real life to worry about.

Niobe (73/73 HP, 19 AC)  d20+12=27
Tuesday June 28th, 2005 2:24:54 AM

"Yorrick we are going back to Peerimus and Ilsidur now," Niobe tells the large bear. She sort of senses that that is where he wants to be anyway.
"Give me a minute and I'll be right there Ilsidur."

Then the city tips at a crazy angle angle again. Niobe keeps her footing easily (Reflex 27). She walks back into the anti-plant sphere. Niobe moves down the exact middle between a1 and s1.

Niobe will be with Ilsidur by next round.

Firn'gaer  d20+15=26 d20+10=21 d20+8=11
Tuesday June 28th, 2005 7:57:09 AM

"Alright," He says just before Celine and the others disappear, "I'll hold he..." The whole Wold turns upside down again. "Focus!!!", he shouts to himself as the ground lurches and once again begins to toss people. Through the churning and explosions, Firn'gaer manages to maintain concentration, Concentration DC26 and Reflex DC21.

Greg OOC
Tuesday June 28th, 2005 8:49:22 PM

Al, I am out of town, and this is my only chance to access a computer tonight. My plan is to have Ilsidur dimension door the other two rogues and Luke over beside Celine and the others. Please post as such, if that action is available. Thanks.

[Will do, Greg. -Al]

Green Hell/The Gauntlet - Round 05 (DM/Al)  d20+11=21 2d6(2+1)+5=8 7d20(19+11+6+19+9+14+20)=98 d20+8=20 d12+6=7
Tuesday June 28th, 2005 9:52:45 PM

Ilsidur rises upon the tilted stones of the plaza and calls Niobe and Luke to him in preparation for a Dimension Jump. He readies himself, set to cast the spell the moment the all are in place.

Savin eyes the biggest Shambling Mound in the plaza. But when four of the group suddenly materialize to the northeast, he decides to join them. He easily retains his footing on his trip across to the others. No plants turn his way. Though that may be because they have all been thrown to the ground.

Niobe too keeps her feet. Dodging between Yorrick and the circle of entangling rose vines, she takes her place next to Ilsidur in preparation for translocation.

With heroic effort, Firn'gaer holds both his concentration as well as his footing as the Wold shakes him like an alchemist with a blending vial. WHAT'S GOING ON OUT THERE!!! the panicky question comes from within the folds of the wizard's clothing. In the distance, the woman holds her position, ten feet in the air.

Sly Foxx trips and appears to fall, but recovers and holds his footing. Calling across the plaza, he checks on Luke. Luke answers in the affirmative, and stands between Ilsidur and Niobe. Rising up on his hind legs, he places a paw into each of their hands.

The remaining rogues pick themselves up and join the circle. Ilsidur casts his spell, and the group winks out of existance, only to appear out in the square with the others.

Yorrick closes with the shambler and retaliates. But, perhaps he feels the onset of the tremors and it unnerves him. Peerimus and Yorrick are both thrown to the ground. As Peerimus rises, he announces his intent to summon aide. (Remember Summoning is a Full Round Action.)

"Stand ready," Lorbius calls to those around him.

"Hurry," Celine calls to those still trapped in the Anti-Plant Shell. "We cannot hold them here for long."

All of the plant monsters rise from the ground. Many stand about dazed or stumble around without apparent direction, with some notable exceptions. The shambling mound (S1) next to Yorrick rises and looks down upon the bear. It knows food when it sees it, and slams down with one of it's hard woody vines. (Slam AC21, Damage 8hp) The blow is only glancing, striking off a meaty portion of the prone bear's back. (Yorrick gets an AoO against S1, taking it as S1 rose from Prone. But Yorrick must make it from a Prone position.) Another Shambling Mound lumbers around to investigate the food lying outside the beautiful orange shell.

The other great exception is the group of purple orcs. When the shaking stops, they turn their heads from the woman above, and, as one, troop silently toward the exposed group that has just teleported nearby.

The half-orc rogue takes a step five feet forward and strikes one of the purple orcs with a greataxe, arcing his weapon in a power swing. (Hit AC20, Damage 7) The weapon strikes home, but the blade of the axe is deflected by hard material under the skin and does no more than wound the purple orc.

(In the Anti-plant Shell, Spot vs DC10 to notice: Highlight to display spoiler: {The Tentriculos are quickly healing.} For those who teleported, Spot vs DC10 to notice: Highlight to display spoiler: {There are more shamblers and purple orcs coming down the street behind you.}

One of the purple orcs drops like a sack of potatoes as Savin delivers two powerhouse blows. The monk takes in the foes converging from up the street and calls for strategic positioning.

Niobe fires two shots at an Assassin Vine. Both are solid shots. The Vine looks hurt. Suddenly the rose vines around it spring to life, questing to entangle any who would enter their grasp.

Firn'gaer calms Rufus while he continues to hold the unconscious woman in place. He clears room for Yorrick within the Anti-Plant Shell.

Even lying on his side, Yorrick's attack can be awe inspiring. A single swipe of his claw leaves a huge rent in the underside of the shambling mound as it rises to it's feet.

Yorrick roars as Peerimus attempts to cajole him within the bounds of the shell. Through the medium of the druid's spell his companion's angry complaint comes across loud and clear. (Translation: Highlight to display spoiler: {"You always order me. [meaningless roar of anger] Always!"})

Yorrick may be angry, and possibly irrational, yet he is not stupid nor, at this point, possessed by a berserker rage. He crawls away from the fight. As though regretting his previous words, the huge grizzly crawls to Peerimus on his belly, licking the druid's hand with his large black and pink tongue as his wounds are magically healed.

The [b]rogue
with the dapper goatee and the short blonde woman stand and assess their place within the situation, as the half-orc takes action. His greataxe cleaves a gaping rent in a purple orc's chest. Within, is not blood and bone, but a pulpy purple mass supported by a brown wooden frame.

"The woman! Get the woman." The booming voice of Lord Lorbius calls out to those gathered around him. "Once she's safe, we drive up the street. Take down anything that stands in your way!" Putting word to deed, he moves on the small crowd of purple orcs. (Hit O2 AC44, Damage 11hp) With an almost casual swipe of his flail a purple orc goes down.

Celine moves deeper into the center of the group before turning up the street. She weaves her hands. "Xia Roks Beiggor," again an orange bead of light leaves the weave she creates. This time it shoots up the street to swell and bloom in the midst of the approaching group of purple orcs, enveloping them in fire. (Fireball damage 36hp) When the conflagration clears the center of the group is nothing but a pile of ash.

The plant monsters, large and small lumber and slink across the ground, inching ever closer. The area of entanglement around the nearby Assassin Vine begins to clutch at Yorrick's hind legs. (Yorrick make a Reflex save vs DC13 to be escape Entangling.)

The nearby purple orcs, then do a thing as of yet unseen. Attacking the front line, they swarm over each other to reach their opponents, each coming in closer than ordinarily a creature of their size could normally. (03 Savin Full Attack Hit AC18, AC23, 05 Savin Single Attack Hit AC7, 04 R3 Full Attack Hit AC25, AC17, Damage 6+5 = 11hp 06 R3 Single Attack Hit AC25, Damage 5hp, 08 Lorbius Full Attack Hit AC14, AC13, 07 Lorbius Single Attack Hit AC12) The half-orc is struck by three claws. Three claws rake down his body leaving purple trails of poison. (Half-orc takes 16 damage and must make 3 Fort Saves vs DC11 or fall asleep. See description below.)

"Hurry," Lord Lorbius calls. "Friend Savin is correct. We must find a place which we can defend. Happy will have such a haven!"

Position = BN182, asleep

With a glance at one another, the two human rogues draw their weapons and move to attack the purple orcs.

Jonas, the leader of the rogues (R1), draws a rapier as he moves towards the purple orcs. He seems more intent on not getting hit than on actually doing any damage. He darts in, pokes a tiny hole in the purple orc in front of Savin, then darts back.
Combat Expertise = +5 AC / -5 Atk, Mobility = +4 vs AoO, Spring Attack = hit AC21, 5 damage piercing
Position = BK181

Specialty, the blond female rogue (R2), draws a short sword and also moves towards the purple orcs. She can't reach them, so stops and prepares to attack them when they approach.
Position BJ182

Thursday June 30th, 2005 11:06:00 PM

Savin feeling confident tries to use his powerattack against his foes along with his flurry of blows. The orcs bunching together confuses him however and he misses with all three swings. (great...just great)

"We have to get Yorrick and the others out. They are gonna get overwhelmed! Celine can you do anything?"

Sly Foxx (AC 20 82/82hp) and Luke (Ac21 65/65hp)  d3=3
Friday July 1st, 2005 7:02:46 AM

Sly wonders as what is the best thing to do?? "I'm too far to help the floating woman? beside I'd have to go through the purple orc? then there's this Assassin Vines that's creeping this way? Oh! what to do?? Wait a minute (at this point Sly Slaps his head)"SNACK!" I'm still a wizard I'll throw a Ray of Frost at it That should slow it down? I hope?" Sly goes into a small chant "Hmmm! Chitty Chitty Chatter Chatter Zoom!" Sly points to A6 and send a Ray of Frost at it.
Damages 3 hp.

Luke stand beside Sly and growls at the A6 that's moving their way.

Friday July 1st, 2005 9:54:16 AM

Firn'gaer seeing that help may not arrive to the woman soon enough, sends the woman back 20-ft. towards the crowd of combatants up the street.

Popping his head out for a brief peek, Rufus sneaks a look at his surroundings.

"It might not be a good time for you to come out Rufus." Firn'gaer says feeling his tiny companion crawling through his clothes.

Of course it's not a good time. Is there ever a good time when large mean and nasties are trying to eat us. When are we getting out of here?

"We have something to recover in the city then maybe a little R&R" I like R&R "for a few weeks and then where the 'Bell' takes us I suppose." Firn'gaer says to his minute friend.

Turning to Peerimus, "Well, I think your plan work better that we could of possibly imagined. Every large plant creature is here and in a few moments we'll be away, far away. So I think things are still in good hands." The wizard says in a light-hearted cross between worry and sarcasm.

Friday July 1st, 2005 1:21:38 PM

Yorrick moves in and Peerimus casts his CMW healing himself and his friend (Last round delay action) His heart pulls at him and his soul heavy as Yorrick issues his complaint. Perhaps he and Yorrick have been together for as long as Mother wishes and it is time for him to return home. Be that as it may there are more immediate concerns.

The wizards remarks relights Peerimus more care free side briefly. "It does seem that way. Hope the others can get to safety. You can transport yourself you said right?" The druid is not sure precisely what to do until the others are safe, so he remains where he is.

The vines begin wrapping about Yorrick, who with a grunt of disdain for them moves a position just in front of Peerimus [BW/199]

With professional calm, Niobe puts two more shafts into the woody trunk of the approaching Assassin Vine. The Vine is slick with sap, but it still winds its slow progress towards the stationary group. With it, comes the area of entangling roses.

The rogue sporting the goatee darts in, skewering one of the purple orcs. He finds that his rapier does not pierce as deeply as he would have expected for such a strike. The blond woman glides forward, drawing a weapon. While the half-orc succumbs to the poison, slipping to the ground. The poison continues to course through his blood. Even asleep, he fights against it. (Secondary Effects, Fort vs DC11 or Sleep for an additional 10 minutes.)

Savin swings fast and furious, but the swarming of the orcs tricks his eye, and none of his powerhouse blows finds its mark. He calls out to Celine. The woman has shown powerful abilities with magic. Surely there is something she can do.

Sly Foxx puts his own magic to use. Extending a hand he shoots a ray of freezing cold at the nearby Assassin Vine. (10% spell failure passes at 26%) Unfortunately, Sly has not absorbed the knowledge that Peerimus imparted to the group not a few hours ago. The Assassin Vines are resistant to both heat and cold. This one is no exception and shakes off the spell as though it had not happened. Luke growls deep and menacing.

Firn'gaer focuses on the floating woman, and moves her back toward his embattled comrades.

Peerimus contemplates his relationship with the bear, as Yorrick kicks at the curling vines and moves away.

Ilsidur rushes through the group, to stand next to Savin. His flaming axe strikes out. (Hit AC29, Damage 7+1 Flame = 8hp) The dwarf's weapon chops into the purple orc, sending up a small gout of flame.

"You wish a clear path?" Lorbius draws in his focus distributes his strikes over the various targets before him. (Hit O8 AC33 AC45 (Crit Threat AC45), Damage on Crit 14+14+16 = 44hp; Hit O7, AC34, AC24, Damage 15+11 = 27hp; Hit O6 AC42, Damage 9hp) The two orcs on his left vanish in a cloud of flying purple debris. While one of the two to his right receives a wicked gash from the kukri.

"I am doing what I am able, Sir," comes Celine's reply to Savin. Her face is calm, even in the face of such odds. She steps up behind her betrothed and, incanting a phrase, touches him upon the shoulder. The noble grows, increasing his already towering height to stand almost a giant amidst the group.

The Assassin Vine creeps closer, taking both Celine and Lorbius into its field of entanglement. (Celine Reflex 12, Lorbius Reflex 29) Celine is taken by surprised, and quickly wrapped in rose vines. Lorbius avoids the clutching vines, but his movement is hampered.

The remaining purple orcs slash with their claws.

(O6 to Hit Lorbius AC23, AC24, Damage 5+4 = 9hp, Fort 30, Fort 26)
(O4 to Hit Savin AC25, AC16, Damage 5hp, Fort Save vs DC11 or fall asleep for 1 minute.)
(O3 to Hit Savin AC8, AC15)
(O5 to Hit Ilsidur AC15, AC8)

Lorbius, now a larger target, takes two claw wounds. The poison from the orcs, however, can find no hold upon his stout constitution. Savin is hit, sharp thorny claws raking parallel tracks across his skin.

From up the street, six more purple orcs arrive. Other monstrosities are not far behind.

Around the Anti-Plant Shell the towering plant beasts continue to shuffle and touch the shell. Other areas of entanglement arise as more Assassin Vines draw near. Occasional sparks flash from overly inquisitive tendrils, followed by windy moans, half pain, half pleasure.

Peerimus [AC 26 HP 73/73] and Yorrick [AC 19 HP 73/73]

Peerimus, who is still seated, looks up at the tall wizard and to his companion Yorrick, "You mean you will be leaving. I plan to keep the shell and the attraction of the major foes right here. Do not worry about me, A Peragrin later and I may soar safely over everything. The shield is quite mobile." Peerimus then thinks to the urgency of Savin's voice. "It does sound as though they could use some help."

With this, the druid begins "Father hear me and heed my call. Send to my friends allies of strength and courage." [Spontaneous casting of level 5 Wall of Thorns for MS IV 1d4+1 Brown Bears. Savin strikes quickly with two punches then moves on before registering success or failure. Briefly he pauses. And, within the silence of that pause, comes the sound of his two foes dropping.

The monk kicks into action again, shouting out for his comrades who remained behind in the Anti-Plant Shell.

Firn'gaer moves the woman 20 feet back toward his friends. She hovers very near Savin and Ilsidur. He calls to Peerimus to ready for a translocation. (OoC: Actually, I had imagined her no more than 10 to 15 feet above ground. Just high enough to be out of the reach of the orcs.)

The bearded rogue leaps forward, the point of his rapier driving into the purple orc. A frown appears on his face as he springs back. The thrust had a feel of wrongness. It felt as though there was resistance to its piercing point. The blonde woman as well, though her strike is true, some quality of these purple orcs holds against the thrust of weapons doing less damage than would have otherwise been expected.

Peerimus looks at Firn'gaer and contradicts the wizard's assumption. The druid is staying. The better to draw the plant creatures while the others fight their way to safety through reduced numbers. Peerimus begins an incantation to summon more bears to fight in their service.

Unaware of the meaning of the human words, Yorrick paces uneasily. Back and forth within a small square, close to his greatest friend. A nest of bees swarms angry within his brain. It is difficult to know what to do. The man will know what to do. Peerimus will know.

Niobe's strategic eye tells her that the time for close quarters has drawn near. Her bow disappears into her magic quiver, and the rasp of steel sounds as she draws her sword.

Ilsidur steps in and cuts at one of the orcs. The purple orc falls to the ground in a burst of flame.

Luke bares his teeth as three purple orcs approach from up the street. "Protect Niobe." He growls and his ears flatten back on his head. Sly and Luke stand at Niobe's side awaiting an attack from up the street.

A deep growl rides the air. A turn toward Lorbius would reveal that the growl comes from deep within the noble lord's throat. With a quick five foot step, he closes the distance between himself and the Assassin Vine. (Hit A6 AC35, AC27, Damage 10+14 = 24hp, Hit 06 AC33, AC28, AC43, Damage 13+16+11 = 40hp) With the longer reach afforded by his new size, the noble strikes twice at the Assassin Vine. It collapses in a heap, and the entangling rose vines cease their frantic movement. Quickly swiveling in the other direction, Lorbius cuts into the remaining purple orc. It falls upon its brethren, as shredded mess.

"We must LEAVE!" he bellows. "Take the woman. I will take the half-orc. We GO!"

Free from the entangling vines, Celine turns her hand in a circle before stabbing it in the direction of one of the orcs up the street. Five missiles of light leap forward to strike the orc. (O11 15hp Magic Missile Damage) The orc lurches from the impact, but does not stop.

Three orcs attack Luke. (Hit AC16, AC21, AC10, Damage 4hp) One claw lands on Luke's back drawing blood. (Luke make a Fort Save vs DC11 or fall asleep)

Three orcs attack the blonde rogue. (Hit AC11, AC10, AC23, Damage 4hp) A claw catches her arm, ripping her flesh. (Fort Save vs DC11 or fall asleep)

More plants approach from up the street. Can there be an end to them? Peerimus, Yorrick, and Firn'gaer are completely ringed by giant towering plants. They lumber about, wood and pulp creaking and scraping.

"Attack the Purple creatures near the humans!" The druid calls out in thier own language. [Handle animal 19 they should reach 178/BQ and BM/186 going in a pretty direct route]

Peerimus knows of Yorrick's agitated state, "Easy my friend." The druids hand stays on the bear by his ear and forehead. "The other human will have you out of this in a short time. I want you to stay close to him until I return. I will not be long." Then to Firng'aer, It looks like the group is making a break. As soon as they have the woman you should take Yorrick out and join them. I will hold the more dangerous plants here as long as it takes for you to make your escape." Savin will gently pluck the woman from the air and settle her on his shoulders like a hunter carrying a deer.

"He will look at the tall Lord Lorbuis and say, "I agree. We need to get out of here but which direction do you wish us to go?"

The druid gives a grim look, but quickly pushes it away in favor of a smile, "I do too."

Sly and Luke do the best they can. Luke shake off the effects of the sleeping poison. (Fort 22) With a snarl he bites at the two orcs in front of him, first the healthy one, then he snaps at the wounded one. (Bite O10 AC18, Damage 6hp, Bite O11 AC13) The wardog chomps the first purple orc. It tastes bitter, like sprouts. Luke tries to lick the taste away and it makes him miss his second attack. Sly, however, misses with neither swing of his longsword, the chosen weapon of his Bladesinger ethos. (Hit O10 AC31, Damage 11hp, Hit O11 AC26, Damage 12hp) The first orc, already wounded, falls beneath the blade. The second is gravely wounded.

Two Brown Bears almost as large as Yorrick, appear, one underneath the floating woman. Through his aptitude with animals, Peerimus commands them to attack the purple orcs. There are other creatures nearer. But, it is the nature of the spell for the summoned to heed the summoner, and so they go. And yet, the druid cannot help but feel that otherwise ... There is something amiss, animals appear more willful, less attentive, more ... emotional?

"Peerimus," the great bear says. To Firn'gaer, standing nearby, Yorrick does no more than pant and move his head. But to the druid, the single word holds all the nuances of loyalty and love, the powerful surge of feeling that the bear has for his best friend, the commitment unto death, the lonely ache when parted.

The rogues attack. Their piercing nature of their weapons makes very little impression on their attackers. Even the wicked stab from the blond rogue seems to little effect when the thrust to a vital area reveals the absence of the otherwise vital organs. They begin a very disciplined strategic withdraw.

Firn'gaer lowers the woman gently into Savin's waiting arms. Then he draws a scroll from his haversack in preparation to create a telepathic link between himself and the druid.

Niobe circles around Sly attacking one of the orcs from the side. Her blade cuts down the wounded orc. But as it falls, Niobe too sees that there will be no sneak attacking these things. Blades cannot find vulnerable places when the vulnerable places are not where they are supposed to be.

Savin holds the woman securely in his strong arms. She sleeps on, oblivious to the danger from which she has just been rescued. Her hair is a soft mousy brown. She is slim, and the curve of her cheek is smooth, though pale from the poison coursing through her veins. Savin asks the way, though, in the corner of his mind there lies the thought of how he will fight with the woman in his arms. (Savin, -4 to Hit while holding the woman. 25% chance that all strikes that hit you hit her instead.)

"Up the street!" Lorbius points to the Northwest. "At the first great crossing of roads, turn right. That will be Dagger Point. The inn is not far down Dagger Point on the right hand side. It is called the Giggling Ghost. It is named on above the door with a sign. Happy is the proprietor. And Happy is the man we go to meet." (Those who've been there in either Dream or for the Elven Meeting feel free to recognize the name.) The noble bends to lift the half-orc. "WAKEN!" he shouts and shakes the rogue like a rag doll. (Half-orc has another chance, Fort Save vs. DC11 to waken from the Sleep.)

"Come my friends," Lorbius says, and the summoned bears both sniff the air and look in the lord's direction.

"I had thought that was our destination," Celine says as she raises her hand to the sky. "Shio bilor!" She sends two scorching rays to different purple orcs. (Touch O9 AC28, Damage 12hp, Touch O22 AC23, Damage 14hp) Both rays engulf their targets. When the bright light subsides, one is but a pile of smoking plant matter. (O22)

With a dogged single mindedness, the purple orcs continue after their original prey.

O9 Hit Luke AC26 (Crit Threat AC21) Critical, Damage 5+6 = 11hp /Fort Save 24
O23 Hit Specialty AC21, AC8, Damage 4hp (Fort vs. DC11 or Sleep)
O20 Hit Specialty AC13, AC9
(BTW, John, did I send an email asking you to give them Leather armor?)

More scraping and shambling plant monsters approach from up the street, while those around the Anti-Plant Shell clamor in their windy language for something sweet.

Firn'gaer casts his spell and then tests the telepathic bond to ensure that it is functioning. Then, with a look at Yorrick, he prepares to leave the safety of the fiery orange dome.

Ilsidur takes a lot of the fight out of one of the purple orcs, and wonders how Yorrick will find his way out of the incredible ring of giant plant creatures that now surrounds he, Peerimus and Firn'gaer.

Two Brown Bears move in for the attack. B1 finishes the job that Ilsidur started. The plant creature is limp and unmoving before the summoned bear pulls it in. B2 pads around the humans to attack the purple orc. As it nears the shambler, the green mound of twigs and vines, strikes out at it. (AoO Slam AC19, Damage 11hp) A limb slams down upon the bear and the sound of breaking bones drifts across the plaza. The bear, for its part, however, gives as good as it gets. Its swipe at the purple orc breaks the already wounded plant in two and drives it into the ground.

Peerimus, at the other side of the plaza mourns the waste. Even the summoned are living, if only for a time. He gives goodbyes to Yorrick. Highlight to display spoiler: {"Soon,"} the bear replies, and his tone is a mixture of instance and pleading.

The rogues take on the lone remaining orc. The bearded man, in particular, strikes well. Still, even their combined cuts are not enough to take the plant creature down. Two shambling mounds tower above the humans, uncomfortably close to the north.

Savin takes the woman up the street. Using Peerimus' bear for cover, he makes a daring move to pass the nearby shambling mound. (On reconsideration, Savin, -2 to Hit while holding the woman. 25% chance that all strikes that hit you hit her instead.) (Note: Savin is in BM174. He is mostly covered by N1 [NPC1])

Lorbius swiftly crosses the distance between himself and the two standing rogues. With only one hand now free, the noble swings his swift flail in silence. (Hit AC32, Damage 12hp) The barbed whips rip into the plants face and it goes down.

Celine remains at the side of her betrothed. From her fingers, again come two scorching rays. (Touch S16 AC22, AC25, Damage 18hp) The rays blaze into the Mound that had struck the summoned bear. And yet, despite the damage, the shambler appears to have quite a bit of fight left in it.

"Avoid them if you can," Lorbius shouts. "They are not easily brought down. And we still have a ways to go yet. GO!"

The scorched shambling mound pauses to attack the summoned bear. (Slam AC20, AC24, Damage 11+8 = 19hp) The bear is done for. As it falls, it disappears, returned from whence it was called.

The second shambling mound walks straight up to the other summoned bear. Heedless of the danger, it moves in a bee-line toward the distant orange shell. (B1 take an AoO against S19)

More creatures approach from up the street. Green horrors are nearly two deep around the Anti-Plant Shell.

Ilsidur leads the way up the street. Both shambling mounds lash out at him as he passes between them. (AoO Slam AC20, AC12) A wooden limb rings off the dwarf's armor while another swings wild. Ilsidur is through! Heading methodically up the slanted street, he blazes a trail for the others behind.

The way is clear! While the plants are occupied with Ilsidur, Sly, Luke and Niobe slip quickly around and follow the cleric. Wisely they halt behind him in the face of the Huge on coming plant monsters.

Firn'gaer nods to Peerimus before opening a Door to another Dimension. Taking Yorrick with him, the pair step through, to appear in the blink of an eye at a spot next to where Niobe was just moments ago.

Savin too seizes the opportunity, and moves across the wide street at a pace that only he can set. He skirts wide around the path of the Huge Tendriculos and Shambling Mound.

The rogues too run. They follow Ilsidur and take up position behind him protected from the shambling mound that they had just escaped from. Unfortunately, they have not taken into account the much larger Tendriculos and shambling mound bearing down upon them from up the street.

Peerimus, remains behind, silent as the wall of shuffling plant monsters moves around his fragile sanctuary. Across the plaza Firn'gaer and Yorrick appear. Up the street more monsters approach. Will they make it? The look so small. Even the mighty Yorrick, against the mountains of leaf and twig that move through the streets.

The remaining summoned Bear attacks the shambling mound. (Claw AC28, AC22, Bite AC11, Damage 15+10 = 25hp, Grapple 32 vs Opposed 30) The bear opens the mound up with two swipes of its claws. The behemoths wrestle, each trying for the upper hand. In the end, the bear pulls the plant into a hug from which it cannot escape.

Lorbius darts swiftly between the shamblers as well. The unconscious half-orc is slung over his shoulder. "BEHIND!" he shouts. "RUN IN BEHIND ME. FOLLOW MASTER SAVIN!"

Celine hesitates. The wizard and the bear are cut off by the shambling mound. "Xia Roks Beiggor!" she points at a spot in the street. Ilsidur, Firn'gaer, and Celine herself feel the heat from the edges of the fiery ball. (S16 & S19 37hp Fireball Damage.) When the orange flame dies away, the shambling mound still stands, but it is horribly blackened and on it's last legs. The summoned bear holds no more than a steaming pile of loose vegetation. Celine hurries after Lorbius, through the area of conflagration.

The wounded and smoking shambler quests through the air as though searching for a decision. (50% chance to attack = 84) It reaches toward Firn'gaer and Yorrick. The turns and makes its way across the plaza to the other plants grouped around the alluring orange shell.

The huge Shambling Mound and the Tendriculos shimmy as they move. They reach out with their incredibly long reach. And they attack the things that stand in their way. (Rolled a D3 to choose attackees 2 & 2) From the midst of the flanking rogues, the Tendriculos selects Ilsidur. (Slam AC25, AC25, Damage 7+10 = 17hp -3-3 for Adamantine = 11hp) The tendrils strike with bone jarring force. The dwarf's armor sloughs off some of the damage. Better still, the cleric's magic repels the grasp of the tendrils. The Tendriculos pulls in no prey.

The huge Shambling Mound slams woody appendages at Lorbius. (Slam AC29, AC16, Damage 14hp) Thankfully, only one connects, the other glancing off the Lord's armor.

Two more smaller Shamblers and an Assassin Vine approach just ahead. The way seems fairly clear.

But, what's that beyond? A disturbance of some kind?

Peerimus [AC 26 HP 73/73] and Yorrick [AC 19 HP 73/73]
Friday July 8th, 2005 5:29:51 PM

The druid sits and waits using the link spell though, he keeps up with events beyond his green prison. To Firngaer Highlight to display spoiler: {Keep me informed. Soon I will fly off and meet you.}

The man Peerimus said he would come and that Yorrick should follow the thin fellow with the rat, so Yorrick does just that. Yorrick moves 30' with Firngear staying on his heel.

Ilsidur (AC25, 97/107 hp) (Sub/Al)
Saturday July 9th, 2005 7:58:35 AM

Their predicament is clear to the dwarven cleric. Especially to the lightly armored rogues.

Only one thing left to do.

"Run for it," Ilsidur whispers. Then he takes the lead, drawing the monsterous plant creature's strike down upon himself. Skirting behind the Floating City noble, he traces Savin's path around the huge monsters.

Move to AU174

Niobe (73/73 HP, 19 AC)

Niobe follows whatever path Lorbius sets. She will move as quickly as she can.

Sunday July 10th, 2005 7:28:09 PM

Everyone runs for it.

Except for Sly and Luke. They choose, instead, to attack the closest thing at hand. The Shambling Mound is monstrously huge. Three times Sly's size, taking up three times the space that Sly does, and tall enough to look into one of the windows in the upper floors of the nearby buildings. The Mound waves hard woody vines around it's body out to a distance of 15 feet. And, when Sly Foxx enters this area, one of them strikes out at him. (AoO Hit AC25, Damage 10hp) The blow lands squarely on Sly's shoulders, but the Mound's attention is elsewhere, and the damage is not so great.

Sly fights his way through, and delivers a blow. It looks like the elven Bladesinger has hit a critical area. Plants, though, it turns out, don't have the inner organs to inflict critical damage on. (No crits on Plants)

Luke follows on Sly's heels, slipping in through the net of waving limbs while they are busy with Sly. He jumps in and bites the Mound, tearing off some vegetation.

The plucky pair's predicament, to Firn'gaer, is now plain. In an attempt aide in both fight and flight, the wizard blankets both enormous plants in a spell. (Will Save 19 & 12) Both plants hunch and heave more slowly. Their limbs take on a ponderous, lethargic motion.

As Peerimus waits for just the right moment, Yorrick follows after the wizard, keeping behind him, despite the man's slower pace.

Ilsidur runs, hoping to draw the attention of the Tendriculos. His idea works. (AoO Slam AC18) Tendrils follow his movement, and one clangs harmlessly off of his armor.

The rogues may have missed the two plants coming up from behind, but they don't miss the opportunity that the armored dwarf has just given them. While the Tendriculos is busy with Ilsidur, the rogues run around the other way, fleeing up the street after the monk and the unconscious woman.

The lone summoned bear, left without orders, attacks the nearest enemy. It follows the burnt and near dead shambling mound. (Claw AC25, Damage 15hp) A single swipe is enough. The shambler collapses into a green and blackened heap.

Lorbius gives voice to a soft curse as he sees the scattered disposition of the group. Some are in true danger. Do they not wish to live? "Celine!" he calls out.

"I am here," Celine replies calmly. "And I am unharmed. What shall we do, My Love."

Lorbius scrutinizes the plants. (Sense Motive 10) "I cannot read them. But, we must give them room to pass or be prepared to fight every one along the way. That, I do not believe we will win." The Floating City noble moves across the street, and takes up a position next to the armored figure of Ilsidur. Niobe follows close behind. Celine, hurries to the far side of the street as well.

The Tendriculos wavers. It's kind are voracious. And yet, the call of the orange shell across the plaza sings to it. (50% chance to attack = 66) With nothing in its direct path, it foregoes it's prey. And slowly, oh so slowly, it slides down the street in the direction of the orange shell.

The Shambling Mound, on the other hand looks down at the small creatures in its path. It strikes out. Slowed by Firn'gaer's spell, it can only strike once. (Slam Sly AC18) The blow glances off of the Bladesinger's finely crafted elven armor.

A smaller Shambling Mound lumbers down the street and finds it's way blocked as well. It chooses Lorbius as a target for it's dull wrath. (Slam AC16) The lord ducks and the branch swings over his head.

Meanwhile, Savin has outpaced everyone. With the woman over his shoulder, he scouts up the street, keen eyes open for trouble. Trouble is what he finds. Pouring from an alley up ahead, is a crowd of purple Orcs.

Thanks for filling in, Al.

Ilsidur moves to the northeast to engage the huge shambling mound. "Sly, you and Luke head up the street! I can avoid the creature's grasp, but if it entangles you, you may not be able to get away. I will fight it until you are free, then I will chase after you!" [OOC: Move to AV172.]

Ilsidur swings at the shambling mound, connecting with his waraxe. [OOC: Hit AC32 for 11 + 3 fire damage.]

Monday July 11th, 2005 11:55:33 PM

The rogues continue up the street leaving everyone behind. Behind, of course, are the nightmare plants as well.

Ilsidur again draws attacks down upon himself to buy time for Sly and Luke to escape. (AoO Slam AC29, Damage 17-3 = 14hp) The Shambling Mound, slow as it is, connects with a solid bruising blow to the dwarven cleric. His adamantine armor can only absorb so much and this time it is not enough. Ilsidur gives as good as he gets. His axe sends flaming bits of plant flying over his shoulder.

Savin puts the woman on the ground as the rogues come up behind him. He tends to her with smelling salts from his kit. The monk is rewarded with fluttering eyelids, and a grimace at the strong smell of the salts. (Woman's Fort 17 vs DC11) The woman's ands clutch at Savin's clothing, he mouth opens to scream. "Orcs," she says, with terror in her eyes.

Sly and Luke stand staring at the Huge Shambling Mound.

Firn'gaer holds back Yorrick, hoping that the Tendriculos will continue down the street.

Peerimus sits within his Anti-Plant Shell luring the creatures toward him. Surely he will be able to escape by becoming a bird and flying over the plants. But, he is so hemmed in by plant monsters, that the slightest move could force the shell upon them. Should that happen, then the shell would collapse, and Peerimus would be at the mercy of the plants.

"Follow me. Run around them," Lorbius says to Niobe. (I'm following the directions in your last post, Eunice) Then, as did Ilsidur, he runs by the smaller shambling mound, taking its attack upon himself. (AoO Slam AC22) The blow glances from the lord's chain armor. "Celine?!" he calls back as he charges up the street through the barricade of deadly plants.

"I am here, Love." Celine's voice is preternaturally calm. "Worry not for me." She waves her hands. "Dokan la!" Celine of House Stizein lifts straight up, flying 20 feet up into the air.

As Firn'gaer and Yorrick attempt to become one with the wall, the Tendriculos (T5) slides slowly by. (50% chance to Attack = 98)

There are now three things the block the way of the Huge Shambling Mound. (S14) Again it strikes at Sly. (Rolled 1d3 from left to right. 3 = Sly. Slam AC17) The heavy wooden limb bounces off of Sly's chain armor. The padding beneath keeps the elven Bladesinger from harm.

Savin watches the monsters up the street. The purple Orcs boil out of the side alley, an invading army, silently scavenging for prey.

Green Hell/The Gauntlet - Round 14 (DM/Al)  d20+10=18
Tuesday July 12th, 2005 11:44:26 PM

Niobe wisely takes cover behind the enlarged noble as he makes his way up the street. Savin, the rogues and the now conscious woman seem fine for the moment. The Orcs, however, are coming quickly down the street. Sly, Luke and Ilsidur too, have their hands full with the biggest Shambling Mound she's ever seen. A well placed arrow or two couldn't hurt. As long as it wouldn't slow her down too much.

Peerimus watches the shuffling plant monsters with the first pangs of unease. The view of the plaza from where he sits is completely blocked by shifting behemoths. After a word to Firn'gaer through the telepathic link, he begins an incantation. (BTW, you still have a brown bear left. He hasn't done anything for the past two rounds. I think he's still good till Round 19.)

Firn'gaer sends Peerimus a status report, and then leads Yorrick quickly up the street.

Sly taunts the shambler. It looks down at the small thing below, without feeling or understanding. As Sly takes off to follow Niobe and Lorbius, the mound swings a limb down at the Bladesinger's back. Again, the blow is cushioned by Sly's armor. He and Luke escape the incredibly long reach of the Mound. It's difficult to move around such large creatures. They always seem to have an extra chance to hit you. (BTW, Balance check is only necessary if you're moving 4 times your normal speed in a Run. And, I suppose that you can't do that here anyway. Because of the rose vines that cover the ground. Sorry if that caused any misunderstanding.)

Savin comforts the woman. He feels a shiver run through her body as he holds her in his arms. Savin calls out for some help with the on coming sea of Orcs.

The rogues position themselves just up from Savin, highly conscious of how they'd fare in the midst of so many foes.

As Sly heads up the street, Ilsidur leaves the Shambling Mound and follows.

Lorbius almost breathes a visible sigh or relief as Celine flies up and out of harm's way. He scans the street up ahead as he moves across the rose vines that cover the ground. Moving up parallel to Savin, he takes in the force around him. "Backs to the wall," he says to the Monk. "Those most vulnerable on the inside. We'll fight our way up the street."

Celine climbs another five feet into the air, and flies out over the heads of the Shambling Mounds. She glances to her right at the one below called Firn'gaer. "Perhaps allow them to approach a little closer," she calls down.

The Shambling Mounds, with no one in their way, continue down the street toward Peerimus and the fire orange shell.

The purple wortlings, however, seem of a different mind. Absolutely silent, they appear more alert than the green plants. And their attention is directed in a different way as well. Too bad that attention looks like it's directed toward the group.

"Probably, but not certain. It'd be good if Roach woke up."

"Ya, stupid oaf. Strong as an ox, but just as quick ... both ways."

"Let them lead off, once we get to the Ghost, we'll see how things are then."

Jonas and Specialty will move along the wall with Savin and the woman, leading the monk lead. If things look bad, they'll move closer to Lorbius where the third member of their group is sleeping. If any ortlings approach, they will make any attacks possible.

Green Hell/The Gauntlet - Round 15 (DM/Al)
Wednesday July 13th, 2005 10:18:13 PM

All stand watching as the silent sea of purple orcs make their way towards the group.

The double twang of Niobe's bow is the only sound. Two arrows sink into the rear of the Shambling Mound as it heads off in the direction of Peerimus. In a normal beast, the arrow in the head would mean a critical wound. The plant, however, seems not to house important organs there, and, though it is badly wounded, it is less hurt than the ranger had thought.

The rogues whisper amongst themselves. No one else seems ready to take the lead, and so they stay. In fact, by the look of things, they're on the front edge of the on coming attack, and awfully exposed.

Celine flies in closer, hovering overhead.

The first wave of attackers will be on them any second. All hold their breath as the purple wave prepares to break upon their front lines.

Ilsidur (AC25, 72/107 hp)
Wednesday July 13th, 2005 11:56:07 PM

Ilsidur moves up the street. [OOC: Double move to AQ150. "So, it looks like we will have to fight our way through. An area damage spell or two might be useful here."

Savin AC 26 hps 85/95
Thursday July 14th, 2005 12:33:09 AM

OOC Sorry Al, Didn't get to my computer til late tonight.

Savin looks on in despair as the horde of purple orcs swoop down upon them. He pushes the woman behind him and says to the rogues, "Piercing weapons don't work as well. I suggest you get a slashing weapon or pick up a club"

He thinks briefly about charging ahead but realizes he would just be throwing his life away. He shouts, "We are gonna need some help here! A fireball would be great!"

Savin starts bouncing on his feet, ready to dodge any attacks coming his way. (Combat expertise +2 to ac)

Niobe (73/73 HP, 19 AC)
Thursday July 14th, 2005 6:47:04 AM

The shambler seems to be out of range now so Niobe gives up on using ranged weaponry for the moment and switches to melee weaponry.

She turns to the natives of the city and asks,
"so do you have any survivable way to beat; oh... 5 to 1 odds, against creatures that can take heavier wounds then we can?"

Niobe looks pointedly in the direction of the massing purple orcs ahead of them.

(Niobe's bow will go into the quiver she carries so she still will have one hand free.)

[Move to AZ159]

"Sorry folks, no fireball. I do have something that might work just as well given the situation." He say as he takes something from his component pouch and begins the incantation. Down the street amidst the purple orcs, growing from all surfaces are writhing black tentacles. Whipping about they reach out for anything they can feel.

Peerimus Highlight to display spoiler: {Everyones by the first wave, larger creature wave. We're running into purple orcs. Lots of purple orcs. We haven't engaged them yet. Only a matter of seconds.}

Peerimus [AC 26 HP 73/73] and Yorrick [AC 19 HP 73/73]
Thursday July 14th, 2005 10:26:47 AM

Yorrick stays moving with the wizard, a saddened whine like growl from his muzzle. Instincts say his companion and partner Peerimus is in danger. This is not like when they occassionally parted for hunting forays.

The Black bear appears just north of Peerimus "Stay right there my friend", the druid then taps the power of the pearl and duplicates the spell. Yelling to be heard by Yorrick, in bear of course Highlight to display spoiler: {Yorrick, I am good. Tell the other brown bear to follow you and assist you}

Yorricks thunderous voice calls out and the other bear moves around teh massive Tendriculous towards the larger bear. 80' move should make it, assuming the plant does not eat the bear.

The Rogues (DMiT JohnP)
Thursday July 14th, 2005 1:44:50 PM

The two concious rogues, Jonas (R1) and Specialty (R2) shuffle about. They'd really like to be in the second rank, letting the Children take the brunt of the ortlings' attacks. Since Savin is not advancing, neither do the rogues.

Roach (R3) is stirring more, but still not awake. He should wake next round.

Thursday July 14th, 2005 9:29:01 PM

Ilsidur joins the others. Moving to the front of the group, he calls for an area strike.

Savin places the woman behind him, and dispenses advice to the two rogues in front of him. He seconds Ilsidur's call, requesting a Fireball. He readies himself for the onslaught.

Niobe holds her position, switching to longsword for some close in work. Her bow goes into her magic quiver. She asks the locals for a way out of their predicament, hoping upon hope that they have something up their sleeves.

Firn'gaer moves in closer as well. He has no fireball for Savin. But that does not mean he brings no cards to the table. With a gesture, black tentacles rise up from the rose vines. The wortlings are instantly wrapped and held. Even some on the edges are grasped and pulled in. The wortlings struggle in silence as they are squeezed and bludgeoned.

Sly Foxx casts his own spell. Dispite his armor, the spell goes off without a hitch. His mother would be proud. A five foot sphere of flame winks into view and scorches a wortling. The wortling pops and crackles, it's skin blackens in the heat. (The spell lasts for five rounds, Sly. If you want to move it, you have to direct it to a new space. In order to move it, you sacrifice a move action of your own. BTW, you don't need a Balance Check unless you're running.)

Peerimus summons a Black Bear and instructs it to hold its position. To Yorrick, the druid shouts words of instruction and comfort. His friend's words quell the bear's uneasiness, in part. Yorrick calls out to the summoned brown bear, and it heads up the street. But before it can move five feet, a tendril whips downward. (AoO Slam AC19, Damage 10hp, Grapple 31, Bite Damage 16hp) With a meaty thud it strikes the bear on the back, and then whips its length around the bear's middle. With a jerk, the Tendriculos lifts the summoned bear into the air. Jagged wooden teeth clamp down upon the summoned animal, ending its existence on this plane.

The rogues stand uncomfortably on the front line. Yet they are unwilling to drop back in the face of these strangers. Fortunate for them that the wizard's magic now screens them from attack!

Lorbius strides forward and places himself in harms way. He readies for any wortling that would approach within his extended reach. (Ready Attack)

"Very well," Celine says from above. "Xia Roks Beiggor," she chants, and another bead of light travels from her fingertips toward the distant mass of wortlings. Again a red bloom of fire swells and dies. And as it goes, it leaves behind a dark charred circle without a single thing left standing.

Now in greatly reduced numbers, the wortlings flow around the magic obstructions in their path. Several take the narrow path between the dark tentacles and the wall of the nearby building. They begin swarming over each other as they come.

Savin jumps forward in a flurry of arms and legs. His powerful blows lift the ortling into the air. In a spray of purple juice it falls to the side in a broken heap.

Ilsidur moves rushes across the street where his axe connects with a purple orc. (O64) The axe bites deep, and flames dance around the wound.

Sly Foxx lends his concentration to the flaming sphere. It rolls across the rose covered street, scorching vines as it goes. As it hits the first purple orc it stops. The heat and flames singe the plant. (2d6 = 8hp) But it dodges aside, and manages to avoid the worst of the flames. (Reflex 23) Luke growls, and moves to the fore in case one of the plant orcs gets through.

Jonas and Specialty of the rogues sweep their eyes across the street in search of better weapons. They see nothing but rose vines. Not a thing to be used as a club. Jonas strikes with what would otherwise be crippling wounds. But his point pierces shallow in the pulpy flesh of the ortling. Specialty moves in to face the ortling. Her shortsword hits twice with an effect similar that of the rapier. The ortling is hurt. Still, it fights on, silently and with no expression. Roach awakens and asks to be let down. Perhaps he hasn't noticed that he now has no weapon.

Another black bear appears before Peerimus and holds position. The druid begins yet another spell of summoning.

Niobe joins Ilsidur on the front line. Her longsword slashes down on the ortling carving a dark purple wound.

Within Firn'gaer's circle of black tentacles, pockets of movement and an occasional flash of purple are all that reveal the presence of the struggle beneath. Meanwhile, the wizard casts another spell, and a globe of force closes over five of the ortlings. They swarm forward climbing up and around each other's bodies. But cannot breach the bubble of force. (All failed Reflex Saves. One is grappled already.)

Lorbius places the half-orc rogue on his feet. The, with a few giant strides, moves up behind Ilsidur and Niobe, brandishing his weapons over their heads. Celine eyes the three on the front line. She flies down from above and taps Niobe on the shoulder. Niobe feels a greater strength to Resist. (Cast Resistance on Niobe. +1 on all Saving throws for 10 rounds.) The woman rescued from the purple Orcs, remains to the back. She too looks for something that might be used as a weapon. It's a good sign that her mind is not completely overcome with fear. Still, she finds nothing.

With and uncanny instinct, the remaining ortlings attack the target that seems the easiest prey. On the right side of the street, the single ortling attacks the blonde rogue. (Claw Specialty AC8, AC9) The rogue easily dodges the clumsy attacks.

On the left side of the pitch battle, the ortlings mass together, silently swarming over each other in an attempt to get at their fleshy food. As many as three slide together to work as one. All of them attack the most vulnerable on the front line: Niobe.

The way ahead looks reasonably clear. After these Ortlings are cleared away. But what does Peerimus have up his sleeve? And will it work? Will he avoid being torn to pieces by over fifteen towering plant creatures?
