(OOC: Berlon wasn't running, he was healing. Can I assume I got the spell off or no? Either way just lemme know...) DM Kup: Yep, not a problem. See the "DM misses details" apologia above.
"Ok, I admit it, nothing uglier than that has ever tried to kill me..."
Berlon topples to the ground, then struggles to his feet like a wounded turtle.

He accompanies Vauhwyt's tactical retreat...

Vauhwyt's plan sounds like a good one to the frightened wizard. "I have the seeds! Let's make haste back to the temple!"
He sprints away from the pumpkin, hoisting his trousers up to keep from slipping on the too-long pant legs.

On Topplings and Haste (DM Kup) Monday July 18th, 2005 11:36:41 PM
Gathering themselves from the tremor that had shaken several to the ground, the group started to beat a hasty retreat toward the Temple of Wardd.
Vauhwyt called for the others to head in that direction as she dusted herself off and led the way. Berlon, too, was able to regain his feet. The swarms of vermin were likely to trample the gnome had he stayed on the ground in any event. Dietrich was likewise affected by the tremors, and he joined those pulling back from the market. Vorelle changed weapons as she retreated more slowly. Rose moved to pick up her discarded bow (where?). Theo indicated his agreement with the party's direction, and joined them in all haste.
The party began to fall back, and the red fey creature--who was still hovering above the pumpkin--chattered and screeched in frustration. The massive creature whose head had emerged from the pumpkin seemed to respond; it disappeared from view once more as it dove back within the pumpkin, and, for just a moment, all grew still.
Then the tremors began again, and a pile of dirt and paving stones began uprooting themselves from the base of the pumpkin! The path of rubble began moving toward in the direction of the party's travel--it unmistakably marked the passing of a large, burrowing creature as it tunneled forward.
Not far away, Olyn continued to run down the street toward the market. There, off in the distance, he could see--a pumpkin? (Let's assume, if you continue to run full tilt, that you reach the edge of the market at the end of next round.)
Everyone else--anyone not moving at a full run out of the market, say so in your next post. The "burrowing" has moved forward 20' from the edge of the pumpkin this round. For simplicity's sake (and so I can dispense with maps while I am traveling), I will assume that the party's "average" distance from the leading edge of the tunnel is 60', although some people--Theo, notably--clearly began closer than that.

Rose's bow is where she dropped it in round 6, as I've deleted the old maps I'm not sure where it is, but it was one move from where vauhwyt had fallen. as rose is hasted I'm sure she had been able to pick it up. I'll post in the morning.
Dietrich AC 18, HP 31/40, blessing Tuesday July 19th, 2005 9:08:10 AM
Dietrich continues running towards the temple of Wardd, but stays close to the not so fast members, looking back to make sure no comrade is left behind. He is worried about the vermin burrowing in their direction and keeps his sword ready and takes care not to come in the path of the monster.
"Friends, stay together! Berlon, keep your fire prepared for when that thing comes to the surface!"
Looking at Vorelle, he points in direction of the annoying red fey..
Berlon (HP 21/28, AC 20, Bless 2m 24s) Tuesday July 19th, 2005 11:08:01 AM
"Yeah... about that..." Berlon says as he once again places his crossbow at his feet ((free action) "I don't have any left."
"At this point, I don't have anything left that wouldn't be more effective than you, me and Vauhwyt smashing it into a fine mushy paste..."
"Except for this maybe..." he draws a scroll this time (move action) and recites some Gnomish magic. (standard action)

Vauhwyt takes a second to understand what is happening. A vermin that had to be what? 50? 80? feet long poked its head out of the pumpkin, and then dived down and is now burrowing towards the party at speed!
Dietrich is running, but Berlon is taking the time to stand fast and read a scroll!!
The liontaur hesitates. If she runs, she will be a coward, leaving Berlon to face the monster alone. If she turns, she may be killed -- the thing is HUGE!
Wait! Wolverines can burrow! "Mookie! Send the Wolverine to fight the monsterr!" (Speaks as a free action)
Then she calls her unseen servant to her, if it is around, and tells it to help Mookie with the Bag of Tricks. (Speaks as a free action.)
The she tells Mookie, if she has time, "Mookie, ready another trick if the wolverine dies." (Speaks as a free action, I hope.)
Then she takes a five foot step closer to Berlon. Then she takes a potion of Cure Moderate Wounds out of her belt pouch (move action) and drinks it (standard action) (rerolling a 1, that heals 11).
She has her spear in hand. If she has any chance to make an AoO, then her roll is (+2 BAB, +1 Bless, +1 MW Spear, -1 size = +3) misses.
Mookie orders the wolverine to attack the oncoming monster. He readies an action -- activate bag of tricks if the wolverine dies. In doing so, he will position the new trick between Vauhwyt and the oncoming monster.
Mookie shouts, "Boss, you are crazy! Leaping Lem, Berlon, get out of here now!"
Finally, just to push the ultimate envelope of what can be done in one round, Vauhwyt taps a button on her shirt, activating a Seal of Feasting --
• Feasting Seal, "When you activate this seal it will produce a full turkey and all the trimmings that will feed a whole group and releave you all of hunger." (Poetry contest prize, awarded in GG 24 Dec 04.)
Maybe the monster will be distracted by the sudden appearance of a feast before it!
Vorelle [AC 17; HP 32/35] d20+9=24 d8+1=8 Tuesday July 19th, 2005 3:10:35 PM
Vorelle isn't especially interested in running from the giant insect. It's faster than we are, she thinks, so running from it is a waste of time. And even if we do get away, all we do is turn it loose on the rest of Dirt City.
She sees Dietrich's gesture, and aims an arrow at the dusty red fae.
[Hit AC 24 for 8 points damage, from a magic bow. Not sure what the range is, but even with an increment penalty, that should hit.]
DM Kup: no time to explain more fully, but I don't see the creature's movements--if it is just one creature--as inconsistent with an expected movement rate. "Falling" (repositioning, really) for a huge creature from 60' up, and then burrowing, say, 40' forward, didn't strike me as unreasonable in a single round for a creature which (hypothetically, of course) has a burrowing rate of, oh, say, about 20' for a move action.
More later, though.
Kathy--OOC Tuesday July 19th, 2005 5:26:47 PM
[Kup, I'm not sure I follow you. All I said was the critter was faster than us (or at least, Vorelle perceives it to be faster than us), not that the speed was unexpected.]

Should I Stay or Should I Go Now? (DM Kup) Tuesday July 19th, 2005 11:00:36 PM Oy, just one more day of traveling and I will be in a position to really focus down again. Sorry if I continue to miss details--just let me know if I miss something crucial.
Imagine, dear reader, the scene that the elven cleric of Wardd Olyn saw as he raced up to the northeast entrance to the Full Moon Market on this fateful day:
The familiar streets of Dirt City were covered with grimy, creeping vines. The dead littered the streets in unattended, undignified heaps. A large, orange pumpkin dominated the ivy-shrouded market.
There, not far ahead of him, Olyn could see his friend Theodore running in his direction. The mage was yelling, "I'm heading for the temple with the seeds!" Not far behind Theo, Berlon's familiar form was standing; the gnome appeared to be reciting a scroll. There, too, was Dietrich, also hustling in Olyn's direction, and as usual in a battle, the ursine warrior was shouting directions. Farther into the market, Olyn could see Rose retrieving her bow from the ground and turning to face the ground. But where were the enemy combatants? And what was Rose planning to shoot?
Vauhwyt and Mookie were standing off to one side. Vauhwyt was directing Mookie to do something. (I don't know if redirecting the Unseen Servant counts as a free action or a standard action, but let's not bother deciding that right now--the servant was already commanded to help Mookie with the Bag.) The liontaur was drinking a potion and pressing a button, and there--presto!--was a table with a dressed and stuffed turkey!. Meanwhile, Mookie, that crazy bird, was shouting something at a--a wolverine? And the oversized weasel was growling something back, as if to say, "I can't burrow through flagstones!"
Olyn could hear the thrum of a bowstring and the whistle of an arcing arrow, and his eyes were drawn to another quarter of the market. There was the silent, but deadly twilight ranger Vorelle, her bowstring still vibrating from the arrow that was now flying high above the market, finding a mark in a--a small, red, flying creature, high above the pumpkin. The creature shrieked with rage as the arrow connected with its midsection, and it flew away.
Perhaps Olyn might not have known what to make of all of this. Perhaps his attention would have been focused too much on his friends to notice other happenings about the market. But, surely, even with all of these distractions, Olyn would not have failed to notice two other, very salient details:
(1) The market was rapidly filling with thousands of huge, black, slithering bugs with giant mandibles--and they did not look friendly; and
(2) There was a loud rumbling coming from a path of upraised flagstones from the pumpkin to about 60'--no, 40'--no, 20'! from the group's present position. Whatever was causing those flagstones to become upended, it would reach the group in mere seconds.
I'm again writing without the benefit of a map (and I know you all are too, sorry!). But let's say that Rose is closest to the "burrowing," followed by Vorelle, then Vauhwyt, then Dietrich and Berlon, then Theo.
Vauhwyt (Str 11 of 14, Con 12 of 14, AC22, HP 31 of 32, Mage Armor, Bless) and Mookie (AC19, HP16, Mage Armor, Bless) Tuesday July 19th, 2005 11:32:49 PM
Vauhwyt sees that the group has one more chance to get out before the vermin horde swarmed them. She shouts in her most commanding voice, "RUN NOW! ROSE! BERLON! EVERYBODY! RUN!"
Vauhwyt turns her own tail and runs in the direction Theo went.
"Bout time, Boss," says Mookie.
Vauhwyt is too breathless from shouting and running to tell the raven to hush.

Vorelle [AC 17; HP 32/35] d20+9=15 Wednesday July 20th, 2005 2:51:30 AM
Reluctant to simply abandon Dirt City to its fate, Vorelle fires once more at the fae flying high above the market. Maybe the bugs will stop without the little pest giving them orders. Her shot is good, but not good enough.
Out of time, Vorelle turns and hustles after her companions.
[Hit AC 15, which I assume isn't good enough.]

Berlon takes a 5' step around the corner of the stall where he picked up his crossbow. He'll peek around the corner trying to stay clear of the swarm of small insects, and try to focus on whatever Big Thing is causing the ground to displace.
But, just in case, Berlon casts Sanctuary.
