Satyrs Just Wanna Have Fun

DM Bob & Carla
Friday July 8th, 2005 7:53:28 AM

The 'Swords' stow their gear and ready to break camp. Villemus and Arminus scout the area around the camp, looking for tracks and other sign. Both the elf and drow in disguise find medium sized tracks of cloven hoofed animals. Villemus thinks he sees a dark furry shape slip through the undergrowth further out from the campsite. Harvest Moon also sees soemthing moving through the trees. She is sure she heard something as well, a rustling of leaves perhaps?

She strains her ears even harder to get a location on the noise when she is shocked to hear a lilting voice cut through the still air"Give us the Woman!". An arrow slices through the air and strikes a tree near the spring. The arrow is 20 feet or more above the ground. "Yes, Give us the woman!!" a second voice calls out from the other side of the clearing, "and all your money!"

Harvest (AC22, HP 34/34)  d20+13=16 d20+13=22
Friday July 8th, 2005 8:38:54 AM

Danger from within the veil of beauty and abundance. It cannot help but touch on the soul of the brown girl, even as she readies herself for possible violence.

"You wish me?" she calls out into the green. "You wish money? If you have need, I will be happy to give you money."

From her havesack, she draws a wand. Speaking the trigger word, she coats herself in mystic armor.

"Please come out." Harvest strains to pick out the figures in the leafy forest. "Please talk to us. Tell us of your need. We may be of aide to you."

"Ashalan Lathanyel," Harvest whispers, "please come here."

Ashalan (AC 18, HP 22)  d20+4=17 d20+4=18
Friday July 8th, 2005 9:40:29 AM

Just opening his eyes from his meditation, Ash stirs when he hears Harvest seemingly address the forest around them. But she has his full attention when she whispers his name.

Confused as to why the small monk is pulling the wand from her pouch, but not waiting to find out, Ash hurries to her side.

"What is it? Is there something out there? Should we ready ourselves?" (Spot 17, Listen 18)

Harvest (AC22, HP 34/34) - 2nd Illegal Post
Friday July 8th, 2005 9:58:22 AM

Harvest Moon points at the arrow in the tree up above. Her eyes continue to move over the foliage as she speaks in a whisper.

"If we are forced to violence," she says to the follower of Alemi, "I can confer greater protection upon you with a spell. Please stand ready."

Any (20 AC, 20/20 HP)
Friday July 8th, 2005 11:54:38 AM

Any hears Harvest speak, and sees the arrow in the tree above her head. He quickly draws his bow from the quiver on Moon Shadow, his horse, and knocks an arrow. He then steps, putting a tree between himself and the direction from which the arrow came.

He whispers towards Harvest, pointing at her, Arminus, Lorth, and Bralin, saying, "Did you see anyone? What is the danger?"

Villemus (AC14, HP 26/26)
Friday July 8th, 2005 12:34:42 PM

Speaking in fluent Sylvan, Villemus called out to their hidden ambushers, "Do I have the honor of addressing the members of the Sacred Circle of Culverwood? Only a satyr would love a gal more than gold."

The disguised human smiled slightly before continuing, "We are envoys from the Pitchfork Council seeking the green mage of Culverwood, Grynntymm Deeproot."

Villemus strided forward and showed his empty hands. "Do we have a truce?"

Arminas (AC 21, HP 25/25)  d20+16=32 d20+10=22 d20+11=13 d20+8=26
Friday July 8th, 2005 7:09:30 PM

Arminas immediately recognizes the call of the woodland creatures.

Most likely this will not come to violence, as they love mischief. Unless of course we do something stupid.

Wanting to be prepared to help, Arminas tries to meld into the forest, moving towards where the second arrow came from. Looking and listening, he tries to get a better idea of the position of the satyr. He pulls a sleep arrow out of his quiver, just in case.

Bralin (ac 21)
Sunday July 10th, 2005 11:16:59 AM

Bralin shakes his head at Any's question. He has seen nothing.

The others seem to think this is not an attack. The dwarf wills himself to leave his axe at his side, and waits.

Lorth
Monday July 11th, 2005 8:16:17 AM

Lorth spins towards the shouting. Not understanding a word Villemus says, he says, "Friends, most likely there are two Satyrs hiding in the woods, plying their mischief. Andrath and I have met them last time we came this way. Offer them some wine and they may come out."

Lorth doesn't bother reading his weapons.

Harvest (AC22, HP 34/34) - 3rd Illegal Post
Monday July 11th, 2005 11:11:09 AM

... offer them something ...

They had demanded her.

Harvest Moon, her face reddens, but her eyes narrow and her mouth draws into a thin stubborn line.

"You want the woman!" the little monk calls out, her face growing dark with anger, even as she makes ready to administer the spell to Ashalan Lathanyel. "I am no stranger to sexual congress! But if it is a slave you wish, and not a willing partner, then come forth. And watch as I tear your manhood from between your rapist legs!"

Andrath
Tuesday July 12th, 2005 12:22:47 AM

Once again, out of his element in the forest, Andrath waits for this to play out.

Tuesday July 12th, 2005 12:44:06 AM

The lilting voice calls out again from the forest, "A truce? A truce for what? We just want the woman; the woman and the gold! Her threats sound so tempting! We don't even want to keep the woman, we just want to borrow her for a little while! And not even all of her, just the important parts, like her pretty little lips, and her lovely legs, and her..." Suddenly a loud slap of flesh on flesh comes from the forest outside the clearing. A different voice calls out, "Enough about the woman, we want the gold! Lots and lots of gold!"

Arminas slinks towards the source of the arrow, which is also the source of the voices. He spots two vaguely humanoid shadows in the undergrowth. Unfortunately, he brushes up against a broken branch as he draws out his arrow, and the snap alerts the two shadowy figures. They each move some sort of object to their mouths, and a loud shrieking noise flows out from them. The group in the clearing can hear the shrieking music, but are unaffected. However, Arminas is inside the area of effect. [OOC: Arminas must make two separate Will saves vs. DC17, or flee in fear.]

Arminas (AC 21, HP 25/25)  d20+4=6 d20+4=12
Tuesday July 12th, 2005 1:28:22 AM

Arminas creeps towards the sound of the voices. He is very near. Though they probably mean no harm, the threat to Harvest seems real enough. He will protect her. Silently he moves towards those who demand 'the woman'.

He draws an arrow, white as snow. Just then, a branch snaps as he pulls the arrow from his quiver. The two figures put something to their mouths and start to blow.

Arminas crashes through the forest and runs through the clearing past the Swords of Light. Not even slowing, he screams as he runs and is soon lost to sight. As he runs you hear:

"They will kill us all, give them the woman!

"Be safe, Ashalan Lathanyel," Harvest whispers, and touches the wand to the Monk of Alemi. A magic sheath of force armor springs up around him.

Then, with her mouth set into a thin stubborn line of determination, the little brown girl marches out in the direction of the voices.

"Are you well, Arminas Calaelen?" she calls out as she moves through the tall vegetation.

Any then decides to try a little general persuasion himself, and speaking in Sylvan towards the sound in the brush says loudly, "My friends I don't think you would like the results of a confrontation with this maid, or with her friends. Villemus shifting his body slightly to hide his gesturing fingers from the voices, the disguised wizard turned and remove a illusionary bag of gold from his pack. Holding out his bag of gold, Villemus shouted loudly before throwing the bag of gold high up onto the tree, "You want it? Go get it!"

Stone faced, Bralin's head swivels to follow Arminas' path of retreat. When the elf disappears from view (or Lorth has successfully grabbed him) he swivels back to the section of wood where the elf's assailants are likely hiding.

Other than that, the dwarf doesn't move.

Arminas runs from the screeching noise coming from the shadows. Lorth tries to grab him, and manages to intercept the runner. He grabs hold of Arminas, who quickly tries to fight his way clear, but is not successful, this round. [OOC: Grapple check for Arminas is 19, not enough to escape Lorth's grapple.]

As the members of the party cast various spells, and either head into the forest towards the source of the noise, or wait in the clearing, a voice calls out, "So, no woman, and only a measly bag of gold way up in our trees, is it? Well, we know how to make a woman happy, don't we? Let's dance!!"

The screeching noise quickly changes to a joyful lilt, and approaches the clearing. Everyone feels the pull of the music, as their feet start to shuffle and hop. [OOC: Everyone, including Arminas, needs to make two separate Will saves vs. DC 17, or join in the dance music that is approaching the clearing. If Arminas makes the saves, he is no longer fearful.]

Harvest and Ashalan, entering the forest and appraoching the music, are the first to see the source. They can both make out humnaoid shapes, with over-large curly horns growing out of the sides of their heads. The humanoid figures are gaily playing large reed-pipes, and dnacing their way towards the clearing.

Arminas is trembling beneath the grasp of Lorth.

Clearly the danger here is too great, why does he hold me instead of running?

As the pipes change their tune, Arminas struggles to get out of the grasp of the paladin.

"Lorth, let me go. I am now free to act."

Arminas rises and quickly fires a white sleep arrow at each of the creatures.

The brown crest of hair that hangs over her forehead bobs as Harvest Moon walks with firm and dangerous footsteps across the forest floor. If there's plenty that the brown girl has, it's determination and will. The music makes little impression upon her.

But what is that I hear? (Will Save: 12 and 16)

Like a memory of happier times, the music washes over him. Making his feet itch with the desire to leap and caper about.

"Heya! Come my friends let the music move you!"

Crashing through the undergrowth, Ash begins to leap and spin, clapping his hands to the Satyr's mystical beat.

AsstDM Greg
Thursday July 14th, 2005 12:18:01 AM

The two barely recognizable satyrs enter the edge of the clearing, playing their wondrous pipes all the while. Barely recognizable because all of the features that make them satyrs are too-large and out of proportion. Their hooves and goat legs are almost twice the normal size, and the horns on the sides of their heads have grown into huge proportions, truly hunter trophies if they were found on wild sheep. Their fur is matted with twigs, leaves and dirt, and there is a wild look in both of their eyes.

They enter the clearing, only to run into the arrow from Arminas. [OOC: I only let you shoot one arrow, since I figure it is a move-equivalent to remove yourself from the now-compliant Lorth's grasp.] The arrow strikes true, but the sleep has no effect. [OOC: I figure that the sleep effect is similar to the sleep spell, in that it can only affect creatures up to 4 HD. Al, or anyone else with a more grounded answer, please let me know.]

Fully taken up by the dance, the satyr shrugs off the effects of the blunt arrow, and continues to play.

Harvest Moon moves across the clearing, and reaching up, tries to punch the other satyr full on the nose. Her swing just misses, as the satyr bobs his head to one side.

The wild-eyed satyrs continue to play and dance. [OOC: Those that have not posted need to attempt the saves as well. If you have saved, you are immune to these particular satyr pipes for the next 24 hours.]

Two of the party start to shuffle and hop to the music.

Villemus easily grapples the now-stunned satyr. The other satyr looks at the equally-stunned young lady monk, and a rather intense look of desire crosses his face. But only a momentary look, as he sees the rest of the party closely watching him. Resignedly, he reaches down to pick up his fallen pipes, and then says, "No singing, no dancing, no pretty young girls, no fun at all!"

The other satyr snaps out of his stunned condition, looks at Villemus holding him tightly, and says, "You were not my first choice for a dancing partner, but I guess you will have to do. I will lead, all right?" Then, with a mischevious smile, the satyr starts to loudly hum a tune, and grasp Villemus to dance around the clearing.

The other satyr says, "If you don't want to dance and sing and ... well, you know, then why did you come to visit us again? And did you bring any of that wine?"

Sadly Lorth did not remember wine, but he doesn't mention it. "It is good to see you again, friends.", he says, "Still up to your old chenanagans, I see. We have come back looking for the Greenmage, we have more business with him."

Harvest (AC22, HP 32/34)
Tuesday July 19th, 2005 10:44:56 AM

Her eyes blink as Harvest Moon shakes off the effects of the stunning blast of sound. Her face is compressed into a tight mask of stubborn defiance. The corners of her eyes loosen and lose their squint at the sight of the satyr dancing with the half drow.

Harmless drunks. Perhaps no more than that. Still ...

"Yes, and though we would wish your assistance in this," the small girl says straight upon the heels of Paladin Lorth's words, "I must insist that you swear an oath never to force you will upon women every again. Nor will you coerce another into unwanted sexual congress through magic or other means." The brown girl's lips again form a determined line. "You must understand that this is wrong, and it will not be tolerated."

"Do you swear?"

Tuesday July 19th, 2005 3:08:37 PM

Quickly shouldering his bow as the Satyr's show no other sign of agression, Arminas adresses the creatures as rightful denizens of his natural home.

"Forgive us our trespass into these your woods my friends, let us sit and speak of the going ons in the Culverwood. I am quite familliar with the magical nature of this place, but it appears to me that this magic has gone a tad crazy. And your appearance, forgive me for saying so, supports this idea. I would very much like to know what you know of this?" (Knowledge-Culverwood:27)

"Greetings," the bard smiles. "My name is Anthos Westar. Call me Any. I don't believe that we've met."

Any gestures expansively at their little camp. "Please. Come. Sit and talk a while. We may be a serious bunch at the moment. But we are on a serious mission. And, if you would, these are serious times."

"But seriousness is never an excuse for lack of hospitality. So please, join us. Fun comes around eventually, once the work is done, as they say. Yes?" (Diplomacy 17, Charisma 18)

Bombarded by questions, suggestions and demands, the two odd-looking satyrs smile, and the first one says, "Well met, Any. I am Thalpius and this is my brother Thadius. Feel free to keep the pipes as a souvenir of our meeting, we can make more as quick as a wink. And it is really too bad that you didn't bring any wine."

Thadius looks at the small human female, and says, "We will swear an oath ... an oath to fun and music and dancing! Will you swear an oath to have as much fun in your life as possible, and forget your uptight attitude?"

Thalpius adds, "Do you like our new look? It happened practically overnight. We are not sure where it came from, but it sure adds to our fun, don't you think?"

Then the two brothers look at each other and Thadius says, "You are looking for the greenmage? That old fuddy-duddy?"

Thalpius adds, "That old fart?"

"That old frump?"

"That old fun-spoiler?"

"Shortly after the change came over us, we ran into him. He seemed very upset at our new appearance, and our new abilities to have fun, so he did! He tried to get us to settle down, and then he tried to entangle us! We couldn't let that happen, so we hid him away. Now, we can all have as much fun as we want."

"Back to the music and the dancing! Who's next?"

Wednesday July 20th, 2005 11:37:38 AM

Hiding his affront for this blatant dis-respect for the balance of nature, casting a quick apologetic glance at Lorth, Arminas tries to communicate with the mutated Satyrs on their own level.

"My paladin friend here mis-spoke, for honestly my two fun-loving friends, we do not wish to put an end to your frolicking, on the contrary we would love to join you, but for us to have our fun, we must find the greenmage first."

A thought coming to him, he continues a friendly smile playing across his lips.

"Perhaps we can make a game of it. You give us clues to where the Greenmage can be found, and we will try to guess where he is. How about it? Does this sound like fun to you?"

He was a frump, but it was his age

A smile breaks out on each of the satyr's faces as they see the lute being pulled out. "A bard, a songster, a music-maker! Wonderful!" Thadius exclaims.

They dance and romp to the impromptu bardic tune that Any makes up.

Then, they add their own two verses:

"The Culverwood satyrs just wanted to dance
But the Green Mage would not give them the chance
So they hid the Green Mage away in the wood
Will they let him out? Maybe they should.

"And now some strangers have come in a rage
To see What we've done with the poor Green Mage
Follow us through the forest, they will,
But beware! of the trees and bushes that kill!"

After singing their verses, the two misshapen satyrs take off south into the forest, following a very faint game trail. [OOC: The satyrs are moving at 40 feet...]

Arminas tosses his eagle into the air. The bird flies high above the trees, and soars around, but only having a brain the size of a walnut, the bird merely tries to follow the party, not understanding a command to "keep the pair of satyr's in sight". [OOC: Without using speak with animals, the commands that are available to a bird are EXTREMELY limited.]

Arminas himself does a better job, easily following the large goat-foot tracks that are left by the satyrs as they hurry down the game trail. As a matter of fact, any of the party can see the game trail, so the only concern would be if the satyrs decide to leave the trail.

As they travel along the game trail, the party can see the forest become more and more wild, as vines and other parasitic plants (plants that prey on other plants) start to become more common. The branches appear to grasp at any loose clothing, and roots almost seem to rise up to trip the party as they hurry along.

Now the party has a decision to make. Do you each travel at your own speed, or do you travel according to the slowest member?

No, as long as Arminas Calaelen can follow the tracks of these two, then it would be best to remain within the body of the group. Harvest eyes the foliage carefully for signs of foe or ruse.

The party moves along as fast as Bralin's short, but stout, legs can move. Arminas has no problems following the satyr tracks.

As you move through the forest, everyone can notice that the forest becomes thicker yet, and even though the sun must be high in the sky, very little natural light penetrates to the forest floor, and to the game trail. The canopy reaches even higher into the sky, and dead trees start to appear in the understory, likely choked out by the bigger trees. Shade-loving vines and shrubs cover the forest floor.

Stopping some 40 feet or so from the dead tree, everyone takes a closer look at the glinting piece of metal. Harvest [OOC: who rolled very well], and Lorth [OOC: who rolled a natural] can make out that it is a piece of shiny chainmail caught up about two-thirds of the way up in the branches. It may be a big enough piece to be armour, but it is difficult to tell from the party's location.

Arminas backs off and climbs a nearby tree, but can make out no more than the others on the ground. He figures he can only see the one piece, however.

As this tree is dead, it could not have grown rapidly as the others over these last few days. If the Satyrs have locked away the Greenmage, as they claim, then they may well have set a trap for us as well."

"We must be careful, if I lead the group into a trap then I am afraid that Master Bralin will never be my friend. I don't think I could bear that."

Looking at the tree from a safe distance he adds:

"There are trees here that move, some even snatch up those who pass below. I just want to check, perhaps it is not as dead as it looks."

Intrigued by the piece of chainmail high in the dead tree branches, the party tries to puzzle out just how it got up there.

A few of the party examine the area for signs of spiders, but there are no webs or cocoons to be seen.

Harvest approaches the tree and calls out, but there is no response.

Arminas circles the tree, but can see nothing out of place. Around the tree, in the ground, there are numerous mounds of dirt, ranging in size from about 2' in diameter to about 8' in diameter. He fires an arrow at the metal, and manages to hit a corner of the chainmail. It moves at the blow (as you would expect an inert object to react), but does not seem to react in any other way.

Finishing his circling of the tree and attempt to knock down the armor, Arminas rejoins the trail near Harvest.

"The armor is lodged very tightly."

Looking about at the mounds of dirt.

"These mounds have me worried. They could be burial mounds as you indicate Harvest. Perhaps they are also made by a creature that lives below the ground. Do they not remind you of gopher mounds common in most gardens, except of course for their size. I have a feeling that the armor may be placed to attract visitors, at which time the creatures attack from below. Of course it is strange that I saw no tracks at all near the mounds."

Looking about at the others and the mounds, Arminas shakes his head.

"Perhaps I am just paranoid, but I have seen some strange things in this forest. Let us follow the Satyrs and leave this mystery for later."

Arminas then looks again for the Satyr tracks. (roll 17)

Lorth follows the party as soon as they start to move. If no one wants to investigate the armor so be it, it isn't really part of their mission anyway.

The trip into the Culverwoods becoming quite the opposite of the jolly jaunt into the woods he had expected, Ash stays close to the others, eager to leave this mystery and to get back on the trail of the Satyrs.

Any states, " In matters concerning a forest, I yield to a ranger any day. Let us move on, and perhaps explore this mystery at another date."

He prepares to continue on through the forest after the Satyrs, but keeps his sling out and ready, and continues to watch the forest closely.(spot 9, listen 14)

Bralin stays put until his comrades all get moving, then silently falls into the rear guard role. All the more because Arminas is in the front.

Dwelling on the elf, the warrior loses some of his focus, and doesn't guard as well as he normally can.
