There's Something Rotten in the Culverwood

AsstDM Greg  d8=7 d8=2 d20+12=28 2d6(1+5)+9=15 d20+12=31 2d6(5+2)+9=16
Wednesday July 27th, 2005 11:26:58 PM

The party decides to ignore the piece of chainmail high in the tree, and resumes travel along the game trail, following the tracks of the satyrs.

As they travel below the branches of the dead tree, the branches rustle loudly, and suddenly two large branches sweep down to strike at two members of the party.

The first branch strikes Villemus across the back and shoulders, for 15 points of damage. The second branch strikes Lorth, hitting him cleanly across the chest, for 16 hp damage.

Two small horizontal cracks open partway up the trunk, and two red eyes peer out at the party. A third, much larger hole opens below the eyes, and a puff of putrid air escapes from the hole. The roots pull themselves free from the ground, and the entire dead tree shakes itself and reaches back to strike again.

Lorth 42/58, AC 19 +4 = 23
Thursday July 28th, 2005 8:08:02 AM

Lorth assumes a pure defensive fighting style and attempts to continue down the path, out of the animated tree's attack range.
"Arminas, any idea what this is and what we should use to stop it?", Lorth say between breaths.

Harvest (AC25, HP 32/34)  d20+6=22 d6=5 d6=1
Thursday July 28th, 2005 8:42:21 AM

Harvest Moon's eyes go wide with surprise. But it was dead?!?!?

"Could this tree be undead?" she voices her thoughts out loud.

The small brown girl speaks a litany. "To Wood Bring Fire." Harvest splits her concentration between defense and attack. In hopes of drawing the tree's attention to her, she moves across the ground to the creature's far side. (Move through it's space to side opposite Lorth and Villemus. Fighting Defensively and Mobility make AC29 against the AoO) As she goes, Harvest draws a flask. Before the tree can recover from it's attempt to strike her, she throws the flask at the dead tree.

Note
If you're concerned about this thing's reach, Harvest has probably drawn it's single AoO for the round.

Thursday July 28th, 2005 11:52:52 AM

Arminas spins around to see the tree come to life, dealing what appears to be critical damage to both Lorth and Villemus. With a look of worry and annoyance he mutters:

How are they to survive in the forest if they will not heed my warnings?

Responding to Lorth's question, he shouts:

"Get away from it!"

Then looking at the roots, he adds:

"Beware, it can now walk!"

He then draws his bow and tries to place 2 arrows into the opening in the tree.

Arminas attempts to stay well away from the reach of the 'tree'.

Any takes aim with his sling for the eye of the creature attacking the party, and lets loose his bullet (hit AC 26). He then seeks for another opening to attack while remaining beyond the reach of this creature.

He is also scanning around for more of these Ents, as he recalls they are called.(Search 9, spot 20, Knowledge 13).

He states to Arminas, " I thought these creatures were of a good nature unless roused. Why are they attacking us?"

Trying his best to avoid the flailing limbs, Ash tumbles away from the tree thing. (Tumble: 18)

Bouncing up on his feet he tries to get a clear shot at waht appears to be a small red eye.(Attack: 19, Dam: 4)

Bralin (AC 21, hp 51/51)  d20+10=15 d10+5=12
Thursday July 28th, 2005 8:41:38 PM

Andrath  d20+12=15 d20+8=25 d8+5=6
Thursday July 28th, 2005 10:22:03 PM

Andrath tumbles to the now-moving tree opposite Bralin, drawing his short sword to match his already-drawn longsword. He swings the longsword at the tree, chopping into the bark. [OOC: Tumble check of 15 to avoid AoO, then hit AC25 for 6 hp damage.]

As the tiny creatures run around the base of the tree and scatter, it swings a branch at the quick-moving monk, catching the young girl across the back and bruising her ribs. [OOC: Hit Harvest with AC30 for 18 hp damage.]

Lorth hurries down the path, out of the creature's reach.

Harvest, after absorbing the blow, runs out of the creature's reach [OOC: move action], and retrieves a flask from [OOC: Belt pouch? HH haversack?, either way another move equivalent action] and readies her throw for next round. [OOC: Unless it is a weapon, drawing an item is a move-equivalent action. Also, please be clear what is in the flask. I assume it to be alchemist's fire, but you list oil flasks on your character sheet as well.]

Arminas shoots two arrows at the tree creature, hitting with one of the missiles. [OOC: Roll a spot vs DC17.]

Any and Ashalan both move out of the creature's reach, and let fly with their slings. Any hits, but Ash misses. [OOC: Any, roll a spot vs DC17.]

Bralin and Andrath move into the tree and chop away. Bralin misses, but Andrath successfully hews a chip of dead grey wood out of the trunk.

The tree-creature swings its huge branches at the two foes within reach, hitting both Bralin and Andrath. The blow to Bralin is glancing [OOC: hit for 12 hp damage], but the blow to Andrath shakes him to the core. [OOC: hit for 19 hp damage.]

I am emailing the battlemap.
Tree creature AC is 20.

Villemus is looking for someone to post for him over the next couple of days. Since I don't have the PC sheet electronically (and no-one volunteered anyway), I can fill in. But please only make it for as short a time as possible, since I am running the game as well as one of the PC's. OK?

Lorth 42/58, AC 19 +4 = 23
Friday July 29th, 2005 7:46:46 AM

Pausing a moment to cast divine favor on himself. Lorth calls on the power of his god.
He then continues using his fully defensive stance and moves to join Bralin and Andrath at the base of the tree.

[Divine favor +1 hit and damage, 1 minute]

Harvest (AC22, HP 14/34)  d20+2=22 d20+2=14 d6=6 d6=4 d6=4
Friday July 29th, 2005 8:42:06 AM

The strike of the limb is painfully hard, and Harvest spins away with several ribs surely broken.

"It is ... perhaps, Bard ... Any ... " Harvest speaks between gritted teeth, "Because this tree is not alive."

The brown girl steals a few precious moments to steady her breathing and will away the pain.

"Villemus Bralfah, does it appear undead to you?"

Harvest Moon lobs the flask of Alchemist Fire to the side of the tree opposite her two companions. Despite the pain, it is a perfect shot.

Note
Sorry, thought we had more time as there was a full round action from the tree in the surprise round.

Any continues to look for an opening to attack the tree (spot 15 against DC 17 ).
(OOC Forgot to roll damage from sling -5 hp dam)

He lets his sling go again, continuing to aim for the more vulnerable eyes (hit AC 24 for 4 hp dam).

He then gives another quick scan around the area, trying to see if more of these creatures are around (spot 14).

Arminas (AC 21, HP 25/25)  d20+8=21 d20+5=7 d20+5=14 d20+7=22 d8+3=6
Friday July 29th, 2005 10:33:52 AM

Arminas is shocked to see the tree swing and move so well.

Dead wood should splinter and break, something is not as it seems here.

"Who has the curing wand? Keep it busy on those who fight against the trunk."

If the spot check the arrow does damage, then 2 more arrows:

Hit AC 14

If the spot check reveals the arrows does NOT do damage:
Arminas moves in with his sword to attack the trunk.

Bralin (AC 21, hp 39/51)  d20+10=25 d10+5=8
Friday July 29th, 2005 11:50:40 AM

Bralin has made a mistake. He should have taken a moment to prepare instead of just rushing in. Now its too late.

Shaking his head at his own folly, the dwarf swings again.

[Hit ac25 for 8 hp damage]

Villemus (AC 14 , HP 11/26)  d20+6=25 d20+7=16
Sunday July 31st, 2005 11:24:27 AM

"Retreat! Just get out of its reach! Then maybe we can just burn it at a distance!", Villemus shouted as he tried to determine the nature of the tree.

Monday August 1st, 2005 2:57:20 AM

Andrath continues to chop at the tree with his swords. Unfortunately, both of his attacks miss the trunk, and do no damage. [OOC: Hit AC13 and AC14]

AsstDM Greg  d2=1 d20+12=16 d4=2 d4=3 d20+12=32 d20+12=18 2d6(2+1)+9=12 d20+12=25 2d6(2+2)+9=13

[OOC: Lorth cannot cast a spell and take the +4 AC bonus, since total defense is a standard action. You also can't fight defensively and cast a spell, since fighting defensively only works when you attack. Your AC stays at 19 in this round.]

As Lorth enters the reach of the tree creature, a branch swings at him, but just barely swings over his head. [OOC: Attack of Opportunity, only hit AC16, so a miss.]

Harvest Moon lobs her flask of Alchemist's Fire, hitting the trunk and starting it on fire.

Any slings another stone at the tree, hitting it near the eyes. [OOC: Roll a spot against DC12.]

Arminas spots that his piercing arrows have no discernable effect on the tree, so he drops his bow, draws his sword and runs in to chop the trunk.

Bralin's axe chops another piece of grey wood from the trunk. The center of the tree shows in the wound; it is black and full of rot.

Villemus tries to understand the nature of the creature. In his eyes, it looks most like a treant, but unlike any treant he has previously encountered. The grey wood, the lack of leaves, and the rotten center lead him to believe that the tree creature may well be undead.

Andrath swings unsuccessfully.

The tree creature swings its branches at the increasing number of foes at its roots. It's first attack targets Lorth, hitting him with a glancing blow to the shoulder. [OOC: Hit AC32, a critical threat! but not confirmed with only an AC18, so 12 hp damage to Lorth.]

The second branch attack targets Arminas, hitting him as well, and raising a huge bruise on the ranger. [OOC: Hit AC25 for 13 hp damage.]

Bralin (AC 21, hp 39/51)  d20+10=20 d10+5=13

The dwarf keeps swinging.

[hit ac20 for 13 hp damage]

Harvest (AC22, HP 14/34)  d20+2=12 d6=6 d20+13=23
Monday August 1st, 2005 7:41:58 AM

Aim for the spot that is still burning. Harvest Moon throws the flask of oil.

"Villemus Bralfah, if you think it is of the undead, there is a wand within my pack. It will Disrupt the Undead. Draw it forth if you wish. It will be the first thing on the top."

Harvest draws a wand of her own. This one to return Life.

"If you would do so, though, please be quick, Villemus Bralfah. I will soon enter within the reach of this thing's branches again."

Question
How's this thing looking? Can we have a status? What's the touch AC? Is it AC7?

Villemus (AC 14 , HP 11/26)  d20+5=10 d6=5
Monday August 1st, 2005 10:09:29 AM

"Something must have corrupted the feys in this wood! I believe it is a treant, but its core is rotten through.", Villemus shouted before grabbing at the wand in harvest's backpack.

After several moment, the still disguised "drow" aimed the wand at the hopefully undead tree and uttered the trigger word.

Any's (spot 6 lousy)attacks seem to have no effect on the creature, nevertheless, he continues to press his attack, swinging his sling once again (hit AC 18 for 5 Dam).

He yells above the din of the battle, "Do any of you think there are any more of these creatures around? The noise we are making will surely draw them if there are, or other things more dangerous in this Fey wood.

Arminas (AC 21, HP 12/25)  d20+7=16
Monday August 1st, 2005 12:02:53 PM

Arminas is almost leveled by the blow from the tree. With grim determination he makes it to the trunk, and swings his sword. His body bruised and broken, the attempt to strike a solid blow to the tree fails as his swords skips off the bark.

"I .... failed you. I sensed danger, yet allowed the tree to attack."

The words come with difficulty, as Arminas struggles for breath and footing.

Andrath (AC20, 18/37 hp)  d20+6=20 d20+6=7 d8+5=7
Monday August 1st, 2005 11:06:29 PM

AsstDM Greg
Monday August 1st, 2005 11:25:42 PM

The blows from the heroes, as well as the fire burning on the trunk, finally dispatch the tree creature. A thick black stinking sap runs from the core of the tree, and the branches slump, looking even more dead than they had previously. Two or three larger branches tumble to the ground, but none hit any of the party members.

However, the party is not to have a chance to catch its collective breath. The many mounds scattered around the now-defunct tree start to move and shake, and skeletal and rot-fleshed creatures start to climb from the disturbed ground.

[OOC: Here is the list of the emerging undead, keyed to the map that I will send you shortly:]

1 - skeletal wolf
2 - skeletal badger
3 - skeletal deer
4 - skeletal wolf
5 - fleshy wolf
6 - fleshy wolf

8 - fleshy moose
9 - fleshy cougar
10 - fleshy humanoid

Amazed, that is the word. The undead tree is dispatched, quicker than expected.

I fully expected that the tree would kill me. Perhaps these undead creatures will.

Reality suddenly snaps Arminas to attention. These creatures will probably kill him. The only choice to to get out of the reach.

He climbs, the undead tree sickens him, yet he climbs. Soon he will deal justice, but for now he climbs.

The mounds. Victims of the undead tree?

Pity wells within the brown girl's breast, even as duty rises. The duty to quell the spirits of these restless undead, and send them home to Gargul.

From her side, she takes up the roughly carved wooden eye. Her sleeve falls back from her pale arm as she lifts the symbol to the sky. The small girl's voice fills the glade as she chants the litany Pasix had taught to her before he left.

"Unclean things, soiled in Gargul's eye. Fear your own taint and unholy state. Gargul's will come through my arm, will bring you grace, and peace, and rest."

After a diving roll, Harvest rises at Bralin Stoneminder's side. "Come to this place," she calls out, "if you require healing."

Lorth turns and slashes at #6, cutting a huge gash in the wolf corpse.

Harvest calls on the power of Gargul, and sends the humanoid and the wolf #5 corpse running off into the forest.

This is not Nature gone wild, but the something else. Nature allows death to be final.

Quickly he draws back his bow and lets two arrows fly at the fleshy cougar.

Harvest Moon dives to the other side of Bralin Stoneminder as a fortuitous unevenness in the ground causes the attacking undead moose to stumble. Something sharp and broken within her chest sends a bolt of pain through the small monk's head. She, herself stumbles, leaving an opening for the gray and undead moose to attack.

As Harvest comes to her feet she speaks the word to which the wand within her hand is attuned. Healing light seeks the wounds in her body. Bones strengthen and knit together. Miraculous are the divine powers of health.

Note

If he misses by more than 5, he falls out of the tree. I rolled for you this round, and you were successful.] Arminas looses two arrows, but only the first one connects.

Villemus' ray misses the fleshy deer.

As Harvest stumbles past the moose corpse, it slashes its antlers at her, but swings wide. She manages to call on the wand's powers, and heals herself.

Any's dagger cuts into the deer.

Ashalan's quarterstaff shatters the small skeletal badger.

Andrath does indeed swing wide with his swords.

Perhaps this shooting from a tree idea needs work.

The momentum of her blow turns to a dive and roll as the little monk puts the skeletal deer behind her. Coming around in a circular arc, Harvest approaches the zombie Moose from a direction opposite Bralin Stoneminder. She dives again, and rolls. But Harvest turns as she rises, and instead of attacking, speaks a trigger word, and touches the fallen follower of Alemi beside her. He glows with healing light, as the wand releases its magic.

The forest glen echoes with the grunts and groans of the Swords of Light as they battle their creepy un-dead opponents. Ashlan is down, however the small brown monk flashes through the enemy with healing in mind, Villemus close behind her. Arminus sends two arrows that stop the moose from wreaking any further damage. Andrath and Lorth dispatch the enemy immediately in front of them and the rest of the party ensure Lord Gargul will have a busy day.

There is no time to catch one's breath when a watery shimmer suffuses the area and the narrow game trail disappears. The foreboding forest is replaced by a green clearing suffused with dappled sunlight as the mid-day sun seeks passage past the trembling leaves of the young trees encircling it.

A familiar voice is heard, "I think she likes me."

The response, "Don't be daft, did you hear what she said? Frightful!"

"Frigid."

"Ice-cold"

"No fun at all!"

The two satyrs' emerge from the forest. "For you, sweetheart!" announces Thadius, as he holds out a bouquet of wildflowers to Harvest Moon. Thalpius hops about on his abnormally large goat legs. Any (AC 20, 14/20 HP)
Thursday August 11th, 2005 9:14:55 AM

Any wipes clean his weapons from the rotting flesh of the undead foes which they have been fighting. From the looks of things, and if Harvest Moon has her way, it appears that the battle is not yet over. His weapons stay in his hands. Healing may have to wait a while yet.

Arminas (AC 21, HP 12/25)  d20+8=24 d20+8=13
Thursday August 11th, 2005 10:13:43 AM

This is too much.

What is real, the forest and undead or this clearing?

Arminas scans the area, looking for clues about this forest. While doing so, he keeps an arrow notched. The satyrs almost had the party killed. This has gone well beyond pranks.

Thursday August 11th, 2005 11:34:57 AM

Still dizzy from his recent wounds, Villemus took the brief break to catch his breath.

"We are looking for the greenmage.", the necromancer gasped before dropping down onto the morbid forest growth.

Thursday August 11th, 2005 1:23:25 PM

Shaking his head to clear the cobwebs, Ash surveys he clearing with a quizzical look.

"Tell us, what exactly is going on here? And why, pray tell, did you deem to lead us straight into the waiting arms of that thing!"

Ash crosses his arms and waits for the satyrs to explain themselves.

Lorth (OOC POST)

All,
I am on vacation next week, monday - friday. Can someone please post for me. Tommorow will be my last post for a week. I'm off to Pennsic :)

Thank you,
Davidt (Lorth)

(OOC: Davidt, if it is okay with you, my son James will post for you. He's been hankering for a spot in the Wold! When do you think you will be back?

Bralin (AC 21, hp 51/51)  2d8(1+7)+3=11 d8=7
Thursday August 11th, 2005 7:20:18 PM

Bralin's eyebrows arch spectacularly as the forest suddenly becomes a glen.
Strong magic indeed

These forest creatures should be dispatched. Yet his comrades resume their talks.

The dwarf takes the opportunity to call upon the power of the Chamber for healing. There will be more fighting ere this day ends.

[Cure Moderate Wounds spontaneously cast over Spiritual Weapon. 17 hp healed.]

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday August 11th, 2005 9:18:30 PM

The small brown monk rebuffs the satyr's advances and demands a declaration of reformation from the fey creatures. Arminus and Ashalan give voice to their disbelief while Any, and Lorth keep their weapons ready. Bralin has a quick commune with his rock. Villemus reminds the party of the task at hand.

Thadius drops the bouquet at Harvest's feet and clasps his hands over his heart. Staggering about he laments, "its broken! Oh! You hard hearted wench! No love? No music? No dancing? No fun?"

The air seems to shimmer once again, and the fair clearing alters. The trees are no longer so uniform, nor the dappled light so cheerful. The forest isn't as foreboding as before either, however, there is a certain disorder in the unrestrained growth of its natural state. A faint trail weaves past the grey remains of a long dead giant tree, and disappears into the shadows.

"No fun?" echoes Thalpius as he studies the bedraggled adventurers dejectedly. Something Villemus says causes him to pause. "Greenmage? Looking for the Greenmage?"

Looking sad, Thalpius puts an arm around his brother's shoulder, and rymes:

"We will not make an oath to thee.
Promise restraint or chastity!
You are a cold maid to ask,
Us to pledge an absurd task!"

Thadius chimes in and together they sing,

"Follow us through the forest, you should.
We will take you deep in the wood.
Show where we hid Gryntym (that old fart),
In the very darkest part."

The two misshapen satyrs move off into the forest in a southerly direction. This time, they do not move off so fast and the party can keep up. They can be heard muttering something about "no fun. No fun at all."

Listen checks, please!

Harvest (AC22, HP 24/34)  d20+13=25 d20+13=22
Thursday August 11th, 2005 10:43:08 PM

"Hold!" The abrupt departure of the pair of satyrs should have been anticipated. But, something in their manner is disarming in the extreme. It is a moment before Harvest Moon reacts. "Hold! Stand and swear the oath!"

When she at last moves to pursue, it is with more caution than before. Her eyes scan the greenery of the changed woods. Her ears listen for other dangers.

As they move through the woods, Harvest notes which of her companions is wounded, and vows to tend to them upon the next stop. They may need their strength to subdue these feckless villians.

Andrath (AC20, 18/37 hp)
Thursday August 11th, 2005 11:32:30 PM

Andrath hurries to catch up. "Harvest, why do you insist on calling these satyrs such thrice-cursed names? Have they tried to take you against your will?"

Arminas (AC 21, HP 12/25)  d20+10=19 d20+8=24 d20+12=16
Friday August 12th, 2005 12:03:37 AM

Arminas moves along the trail with care, the wounds from the tree barely slowing his movement. Keeping an eye on the satyrs and for dangers along the trail, he feels responsible for falling into the trap laid by the satyrs. He does not intend to do so again.

Walking along side Harvest, he watches the exchange between Harvest and the satyrs and the comments of Andrath.

"Harvest, you know that I stand by you. If you felt threatened by them, then you were. An apology shall be had. Consider though for a moment that the satyrs are not themselves. They have been changed, and by unnatural means it seems. Perhaps if we were to find the greenmage we could return these creatures to their natural state. In such a state, they may be more prone to listen to reason. Regardless though, I stand by you."

Lorth

Lorth nods at Arminas. "You speak truth my friend, and I agree. The Greenmage should be able to sort this out." He then begins to follow the Saytr's.

Ashalan (AC 18, HP 15/22)  d20+4=10 d20+4=14
Friday August 12th, 2005 10:01:37 AM

A dubious look crossing his face, Ash voices his doubts.

"I'm not sure following these things is such a great idea. Remember where that got us in the first place?"

Plainly not wanting too, but not wanting to get left behind either, Ash follows the group. Wary of the forest around him. (Listen: 10, Spot: 14)

Any says, "I agree with Arminas good lady. These satyrs sre not themselves, but have been warped. Still, I do not trust them, or their motives. I feel there is more then wimsy in their rhymes, and we should all be wary."

(the last line is spoken almost as a chant)
He tries to discern the motive behind their two guides.

As he walks, Any begins to sing to himself (cast CMW for 17hp to bring himself to full strength).

He then says, "Do any of you still require healing before another battle comes upon us?"

Bralin (AC 21, hp 51/51)  d20+4=22 d20+5=23
Saturday August 13th, 2005 10:42:45 AM

Bralin says nothing. Enough has been said already. He had his comrades have little choice now but to follow those creatures, likely into battle. What will happen afterward is unknown. Why prattle on about it?

This wood, though, is known. And a danger.

The dwarf keeps axe in hand as he trails his comrades, watching the backtrail.
