Before the eyes of the group, Niobe slips to the street, a sleep in a bed of roses. (Niobe, please make one more Fortitude Save vs a DC11. This is secondary poison. If you fail, Sleep for an additional 10 minutes.)
Already drenched in its own purple juices, the purple orc makes a squishing sound when Savin strikes it. The monk moves swiftly over the fallen body to Ilsidur's side. Niobe is in trouble!
Firn'gaer moves up the street to the rescued woman. He draws a wand an prepares to strike down the oncoming ortlings. With Savin gone, the woman looks relieved to have someone nearby. (I don't like it, but, apparently you may not draw from HHH as part of a move action. As I've said, I don't like it, but I've been overruled. BTW, the woman isn't down. Niobe is.)
The furious movement subsides with the waving forest of dark tentacles. The spellborn limbs still search and grasp, but their even, placid movement speaks to the absence of anything living still within.
Sly maintains his concentration, moving the burning ball of fire towards the nearest three ortlings. Because they swarm together in such a close space, the burning sphere catches all three. (10hp fire damage) In silence they writhe as the fire burns their plant flesh. One falls to the ground and dies. Luke moves quickly across the slanted vine covered street. Standing nearly as tall as the ortlings themselves, he protects Niobe's still and fallen form, baring his teeth with a menacing growl. (It's 5x5, Sly.)
The rogues slip past the macabre sight of four purple ortlings swarming against the invisible barrier of Firn'gaer's Resilient Sphere. Silent as they are, their eyes speak for their burning need to return home with food. And it is clear what it is that they consider food. The rogues form up around the enlarged lord of their city, seemingly the safest place to be at this time. The search for weapons but none are to be found. The streets of Fence Level are kept cleaner than those of their home level below.
Peerimus remains where he is, holding the summoned bears in position. Four more appear within the tight quarters. Two find rose vines grasping at their hind quarters. (Bears6 & 7 Reflex vs DC13 or be Entangled.) Around the Anti-Plant Shell, the creatures shuffle and make sounds like the wind moving through the trees. They reach out to touch. Some reach out for food. Without perfect control of flight, it will be impossible to leave without pushing the shell into at least one of them. (Peerimus, if you can wildshape into a creature with Perfect Flight, you can keep the Anti-Plant Shell active.)
Lorbius stoops to pick Niobe up off the street. At nearly the same time, heedless of the foes around them, the ortlings stoop to retrieve their fallen food as well. [i](Savin, Ilsidur, and Luke, you may take an AoO against one of the following Ortlings: Savin-O69 or O65; Luke-O29, O35, or O34; Ilsidur-Any of those. If you have Combat Reflexes, you may more AoO's up to 1 plus your Dex bonus.)
It is difficult to tear Niobe from the hands of the Ortlings without hurting her, and Lorbius can do no more than keep the purple orcs from running off.
Celine rises 30 feet into the air and fires two Scorching Rays at the approaching Shambler. (Touch AC32, AC24, Damage 6+13 = 19hp) The rays leave a third of the shambler charred and blackened. But it comes on.
One Ortling (O48) comes around the side and claws at Luke. (Hit AC15) But the dog's natural toughness protects him from the claw. The rest of the purple orcs cannot risk the dangers of the gray tentacles and the burning sphere. Instead of trying to slip between the two hazards, they go around. Swarming behind the main pack, the prepare to move in and wrestle the food from the animals who keep it from them.
(Niobe, as you are being pulled and jostled, please take another Fortitude Save vs DC11 to wake up. If you wake up, though, you will have found that your weapon has been dropped and is on the ground below you. All enemies around you will receive an Attack of Opportunity if you reach down to retrieve it.)

Niobe's companions rush to the rescue.
A purple orcs, soft and pulpy, nearly dead, explodes when hit by Savin's power blow. Savin steps through the spray of flying purple viscera, and before the purple rain settles on his skin, the monk puts his fists through the body of the second ortling. (BTW, the number of points you can allocate to Damage using Power Attack may not exceed your Base Attack Bonus. 7 is your BAB. 11 is your Melee Attack Bonus or MAB.)
Ilsidur chops at one of the ortlings as it bends to pick up Niobe. Cleaved through the torso, it throws its hands in the air before falling to the ground in a loose flaming pile. Quickly stepping in, Ilsidur lands two successive blows, and a second ortling releases Niobe and falls to the ground.
Sly moves the Flaming Sphere south. Before it gets to where he wishes it to go, the Sphere runs into two ortlings swarming over each other. The Sphere scorches both. (Fire Damage 2hp. Reflex Saves 12-Failed & 15-Saved) This time the core heat of the fire misses its targets. Worse yet, one of the pair is able to squirm away and avoid the fiercest of the heat.
Luke bites a mouthful of ortling. Purple juice fills his mouth as the big wardog rips away a sizable chunk of plant.
The woman, despite Firn'gaer's reassurances, continues to eye Yorrick with apprehension. Rufus peeks out, wiggles his nose, and then dives back to safety again. The wizard triggers the magic of his wand, and three dull explosions rip the insides of the approaching shambler.
The way now apparently clear, the rogues move out. Jonas makes some subtle surreptitious hand signals, and then they go. Too soon? The shambling mound is charred and half dead. But it still presents a very real and terrible threat.
Peerimus shifts to the form of an eagle. One of the summoned bears moans in complaint, as its hind quarters are wrapped in twisting rose vines. The towering plant creatures shift and jostle. Soon now. Soon.
With a weapon in either hand, Lorbius finds his grip on Niobe's body tenuous even with most of the ortlings now gone. One leg wedged under his arm, he strikes out with the flail in his free hand. (Hit O29 AC28, 13hp) Even taking care not to strike Niobe, the noble lands a blow, ripping flesh from the ortling with the whips of the flail.
Five more bolts of bright light, kin to those from Firn'gaer's wand, fly down from Celine's position above. (Magic Missile 15hp) They strike the shambler, burning more of the life from it.
The single ortling retains its hold on Niobe. Straining to pull her free. It has no scruples about causing harm to the rogue, and its claws dig in as it pulls. (029 Grapple Full Attack damage 5+5 = 10hp) Two more move in. They reach out to catch a hold of Niobe, and pull. (042 Grapple damage 4, O48 Grapple damage 6 = 10hp)
Three more flee the flaming sphere, and come around to attack Luke. (O43 Claw AC9, O46 Claw AC16, O50 Claw AC22, Damage 6hp. Luke make a Fort Save vs DC11 or fall asleep.) One ortling breaks through the wardog's defenses, leaving a nasty poison filled wound.
The Shambler, (S20) blackened and dying, lumbers across the short intervening rose covered space between itself and the rogue, Jonas. From five feet away, it sends a waving branch crashing down upon the rogue. (Slam AC13. lucky lucky bastard) The rogue's care and vigilance pays off. He ducks, and feels the passage of the heavy branch above.

The Wold jumps and turns at a confusing angle. Hard hands are upon her body. (Niobe, see current hitpoints below. Looking at your Fortitude Rolls, I think you should now be awake. Grappling is close hand to hand combat. Wrestling, if you will. It deals damage as though from an unarmed strike. Normally, Niobe would have a chance to avoid the damage by making an opposed grapple check to escape. But she was asleep, and therefore automatically took damage as the ortlings grabbed and pulled at her in their attempt to take Niobe away from Lorbius.)
Jonas of the rogue trio leaps to the attack. He finds that the point of his rapier finds greater purchase against this Shambler, than it did against the purple ortlings. His colleagues scatter, spreading their selves into three separate targets.
Savin moves in perilously close to Sly's Flaming Sphere, and punches the lights out of one of the orcs holding Niobe. He shouts at the remaining ortlings, but they pay him no heed, continue to fight Lorbius for the body of the now conscious rogue.
Ilsidur swings, and another ortling goes down. Niobe has only one purple orc gripping her let in its claws. Ilsidur calls out to Peerimus, urging him to hold the giant plant monsters for a moment longer.
Firn'gaer dismisses the sea of dark tentacles. They vanish, leaving purple crushed and mangled bodies lying on the street. The wizard draws a second wand, and offers Peerimus help in his escape. He points out Lord Lorbius indicating that the rescued woman would be best to follow him.
Sly keeps the Flaming Sphere where it's at and he moves across the tilted street. Luke bites again at an ortling. He rips out another chunk of flesh.
Through the telepathic link, Peerimus sends a reply to both Firn'gaer and Ilsidur. He begins to instruct the bears to move into new positions, then remembers that he is in the form of an eagle. Can a creature without the power of speech use the Speak to Animal spell? Can eagles communicate with bears? Apparently they can. Or, perhaps it's the feat that Peerimus has mastered allowing him to cast spells while in animal form. Maybe that has helped to bridge the gap. Regardless, the bears shift to their new positions, growling at the plants just outside the shell.
Lorbius looks relieved as Niobe wakens. And yet an ortling still pulls her by an arm. He could let her drop to the ground and attack with both weapons. Chances are good that he could take them down before they escaped. Then his head turns, and his eyes lock upon a think down the alley to the west. A low growl rumbles in his throat, and Celine glances downward from above. She follows his gaze, peering into the dim light.
The ortling holding Niobe (O42) digs a claw in and pulls. (Grapple 28, 17 vs DC24, Grapple Damage 5hp) It's claws dig in ripping more of Niobe's flesh.
Two others nearby abandon Luke and answer a telepathic call for help. They swarm over and grab at Niobe. (046 Touch Attack AC7, AC21 vs DC10, Grapple 16 vs DC24) The first one misses the squirming Niobe, but then reaches out with a second claw and grabs hold. But Niobe, fighting for her life, manages to rip away. (O50 Touch Attack AC22, AC16 vs DC10, Grapple 33 & 22 vs DC24, Grapple damage 6hp.) The second ortling gets a good hold of Niobe. One of its claws digs in deep.

The last ortling attacks Luke again. It hits with both claws. (O43 Claw Luke AC23, AC20, Damage 4hp) One claw scrapes the wardog's leg drawing blood, and leaving poison behind. (Make another Fortitude Save vs DC11, Luke or fall asleep.)

If she gets away Niobe certainly hopes to retrieve her rapier ASAP. It would seem that Niobe is too ticked off to fall asleep again...
"Thanks Ilsidur!"
She has no real overview over this farce, so thanking everyone else will certainly be for later.
(At the first opportunity to safely retrieve her dropped weapon that will be Niobe's primary action. Then she'll hopefully be able to get the heck out of Dodge!)

Jonas attacks again. His rapier undoes a thread within the Shambler, and it falls to the street. The rest of his rogue crew, forms a tight triangle behind him.
Ilsidur steps back to avoid an attack by the nearby orcs. Through the Synergy between Chaos and Law, he draws the divine power of health. Niobe's wounds close and heal.
If Ilsidur is the Life-giver, then Savin is the Life-taker. With three quick and precise strikes, he sends an ortling to the street.
Sly and Luke attack together. Singing sword and clashing teeth. Another orc throws up its claws and falls to the ground, bleeding purple juice.
With the street in the immediate area all but clear, Lorbius drops Niobe's leg and steps over her body. Dual weapons flash, striking at the hated plant creatures. (Flail Hit O50 AC26, AC42, AC35, Damage 10+13, Flail Hit O46 AC25, Kukri Hit AC44 (Crit Threat AC28 = Crit) Damage 14+11+12) The plants fall to his blade.
Niobe rises and retrieves her rapier.
The Floating City noble rises from his crouch and turns to the dwarven cleric. For a moment, he does no more than look down upon Ilsidur from above. His eyes are dark as he weighs various unreadable thoughts.
"It is a personal matter," he says at last. His eyes rise to Celine up in the air. "And it is a thing that we must attend to immediately."
"Go love," he whispers to Celine. "I will track if necessary." She flies down the alley at a speed unmatched on land. Lorbius looks to the south at the wall of shuffling plant creatures that ring Peerimus and his Anti-Plant Shell. "I fear for your friend," the noble says. "But there is nothing I can do for him. I must go."
"We will meet you at the Giggling Ghost. It is north along this street. At the first large crossing of ways, turn to the right. The Giggling Ghost will be on the right side. The sign is plain."
"Go with your gods. Your friend Druid Peerimus as well." Then the lord moves swiftly across the street and up the alley.
Screeching to the sky, Peerimus in the south, casts a spell. The bears around him swell in size. Hell and carnage break loose.
Now larger in size, the bears jostle for space within the Anti-Plant Shell two are forced half out, exposing themselves to the monsters without. Without heed, they attack. The claws of the large black bears send green plant flying into the air. But the Tendriculos begin to heal at an alarming rate. The one to the south, attacked by the smaller bear, appears completely unharmed.
The towering plant monsters reach out to flail at the exposed parts of the bears.

The Rogues (DMiT JohnP) Friday July 22nd, 2005 7:30:04 AM
The three rogues stand together, plainly having a discussion.
From his hand motions it looks like Roach (R3), the half orc, is nervous. Specialty (R2), the human female, seems calmer but is looking up the street towards the Giggling Ghost. Jonas (R1), rubs his bearded chin while listening to the words of the other rogues and glances back towards the Children.
Listen DC 15 to Highlight to display spoiler: {His voice almost almost pleading, Roach says to Jonas, "Boss! I don't got no weapons, and I ain't going back for my axe, neither. Look up ahead! We gotta stick with them and let them fight."
Specialty listens to Roach's words and speaks in a measured, calm manner. "We thought the way ahead was clear, but there's too many plant-things still moving about. The Ghost is close but not close enough."
Jonas replies to his underlings, "You've persuaded me. I don't know if they remember how they found us, but we can still probably give them the slip after the Ghost."}
Turning to the Children, Jonas calls out to the Children. "We took care of that shambling thing, but there's still some plant-things between here and the Ghost. Do you want us to lead you there?"

Savin decides to watch them closely and if they slip away, so be it. He doubts 3 thieves can really hurt the city to much right now.
Savin says, "Ilsidur, lead the others to the Giggling Ghost. I will stay here to help Peerimus, if he gets into trouble. I can easily catch up if I need to."
Savin then takes a good look around, trying to insure nothing is sneaking up on them.
"Hurry up and get that nice lady to the Ghost."

[Move to AL146]
The wizard continues to move up the street towards the place mentioned by Lord Lorbius.
Crossing The Green Styx - End of Combat (DM/Al) d20+6=11 Saturday July 23rd, 2005 9:55:05 AM
The way is clear!
A single Assassin Vine coils against a building at the side of the street. The tip of the vine weaves in the air. But, slow as it is, it possesses little threat by itself. Five hundred feet up the street something large and green moves off to the west and disappears up a cross street. There are still dangers about in within the city.
Lorbius and Celine have vanished down the alley.
The woman rescued from the clutches of the plant-orcs gives a brave smile to Savin and Firn'gaer. Her eyes, though, are still filled with fear and confusion. "You're going to the Giggling Ghost? When the city began shaking I ran home. We hid there. And then they began breaking in through the windows. My mother and father ... If we had gone to the Giggling Ghost ... " Her lip quivers and tears well up in her eyes.
Each person is blessed with their allotment of courage and emotional fortitude. And it seems as though this young woman has nearly uses all of hers up.
The rogues are made of sterner stuff. With a very practical eye, they offer to guide the group of adventurers to the Giggling Ghost.
With his bears in mortal combat with the plants below, Peerimus in eagle form launches himself skyward. The angry orange shell of magic suddenly collapses, and the silence that it leaves is filled by the whistling whip of tendrils and woody vines as they slam and grasp. Peerimus banks, flapping heavy wings in a slow and desperate spiral climb. (Half speed going up.) A single long reaching tendril seeks to pluck the bird from the sky. (T4 AoO Slam 11 /Sorry, Daniel, I didn't see a Grapple check from B3. He had to beat a DC33. But, you beat the AoO anyway.) Peerimus jinks, smoothly avoiding the grasping tendril. Higher and higher he climbs in a spiral, until he passes over the wall of angry plant creatures below. Some seventy feet in the air, he safely crosses their line. Down below, he watches as the last remnant of his cadre of summoned bears is torn to bits and disappears, returned to the womb of Mother Wold to be birthed again some happier day.
The odd mix of people and animals makes their way quickly up the street. Peerimus soars above. The sky looks so high. (See note, Peerimus.)
The thundering crowd of plant creatures back at the mouth of the Central Stairs does not follow. Without a focus to draw them, they mill about. Some attack each other. The group makes their way around the Assassin Vine and up to the large intersection with ease. Looking to the left, the large green thing has disappeared, moved off and out of sight.
The group turns right onto Dagger Point. Another two hundred feet or so and they see a sign. On it is painted the figure of a curvaceous full figured ghost as she laughs into her hand. The front of the inn is a wreck of broken doors and windows. Boards, nailed back, and furniture piled from behind seals most of the portals from ingress. The street is a litter of bodies, purple orcs and shambling mounds. No bodies of people remain out on the street.
" ... Rosana ... Aldur ... Brundy. Please ... could use ... a while ... " A small robed figure stand before the door. In her hand is a staff. By her side is a large animal, a bear, or perhaps a lion. A high female voice floats down the street toward the group.
(Peerimus, the buildings are 3 stories at the tallest. If you wish to fly higher than that, please make a spot check vs DC25. Miss the check and take 1d6 times the speed at which you are flying. This is for a collision with the magic ceiling. It looks high. But it's not that high.)
NOTE: HERE begins a crossover with the Crimson Shields. DM George will be taking over from here. Please post on the Crimson Shields Board until he indicates otherwise. I've ensured that you all have rights to post there. Please contact me if you find otherwise. Good luck.
Peerimus (Eagle) [AC 18 HP 63/63] and Yorrick [AC 19 HP 73/73] Saturday July 23rd, 2005 12:58:03 PM
Peerimus says a silent prayer to Mother and Father for the bears sacrifice. Thought their deaths were not real the pain they had to endure was. Knowing Assassin Vines could be on the ceiling and rooftops of the are, Peerimus descends to about 25' off the ground and tries to keep as much in the middle of the street as he can.
Shooting over the group, he calls out to Yorrick, Highlight to display spoiler: {It is good to see you my friend, let us on to the ghost.} Peerimus shortly wheels about and lands just in front of them and shifts to human. Moving quickly to him, the druid is almost knocked prone by the great kodiak. "EN'Gahgrrrr" "I was worried too my friend."
Closing with the Ghost, Peerimus takes the lead on seeeing the woman and the animal at her side. "We come from Gold Level, some of these people need shelter."

Savin (HP 85/95) (Sub/Al) Sunday July 24th, 2005 7:03:01 PM
Now that the immediate danger has passed, the woman that they rescued looks shaken and none too steady.
"We'll get you through this. Terrible things happen to test our will. Sometimes good things pass from our lives," Savin explains. "We need to hold to the faith that good things will come along again."
Or, at least that's what the Master had said.
"Sometimes enjoying the simple things in life can help you find that faith. Or, take your mind off of the problems you have now. I just restocked my spice collection. I'll cook you something when we get inside." The monk smiles. "What do you say?"
