"Into the very deepest part, Where Father practices his art. Gynntym's garden of trees, it was meant to be. The arboretum of the Wold, now a penitentiary!"
The chanting of the satyrs floats back to the party as the Swords of Light, ever on their guard, follow the duo down the barely distinguishable path. Arminus is first, making sure the party does not get lost, while a wary Any senses that the satyrs' intend no harm, but have abandoned all attempts at controlling their impulses.
After an hour of marching, the party crests a knoll and starts the descent into a glen. The path weaves downward between evenly spaced trees. The trees, which are of enormous proportions appear as if grouped in threesomes. Each grouping is very different, one from the other. Arminus is puzzled, for some of the trees are foreign and unrecognizable. Certainly not the species native to the Culverwood. He recognizes that some of the specimens would not survive, were it not for the protection provided by the small valley. As the party reaches the bottom of the glen, the path curves to follow a meandering brook. Bushes bearing large balls of blue flowers grow in profusion, along the embankment opposite.

The brown girl trots after the satyrs in silence.
"Perhaps you are right, Arminas Calaelen." Harvest buries herself in the sound of the group as their feet move along the trail. "I will bow to your knowledge of such things, Arminas Calaelen. Yours and that of Anthos Westar."
"They demanded from us gold, Andrath Silverhand." Harvest looks askance at the rogue. How could he have not heard them in the glade of the spring? "Gold and my body. And, yet, as you say, they have not acted upon their words."
"And so ... perhaps they will not."
As the group hurries along, Harvest sprints a short distance to catch the elven ranger as he scouts the trail. With the wand in her hand, she speaks the magic word, and the jagged wounds from the undead deer close and heal.
Harvest Moon eyes the triple trees as they drop down into the glen. And when they reach the stream, the staff is of curiosity. But more imperative is the cry for help.
... it was meant to be. The arboretum of the Wold, now a penitentiary ...
The words of the Satyrs ring in her ears. Who would be held herein? And why?
"Hello?" Harvest Moon nears the trio of trees. "Who calls?" Her eyes seek to pierce the riddle of the voice. "I cannot see you to release you. Tell us how we may help."
"Do you hear the voice calling?" she queries her comrades.

As Harvest points the wand and triggers the magical healing, Arminas feels his body tingle as tissue once again becomes whole. Only a few bruises are left, and Arminas stretches his body like a cat.
"Harvest, now I am even more in your debt. You and I will make these satyrs understand what is acceptable, upon that you have my word. Circumstances suggest that they had knowledge or responsibility for the undead creatures and tree. For that alone they must pay."
Entering the clearing, Arminas stares with wonder.
"These trees, I do not recognize many of them. They must have been brought here from strange lands, apparently long ago. Although, at the recent rate of growth, there is no telling."
"I do not hear a voice, but I do not question your ears."
Bralin's remark about the staff though seems to have Arminas' attention.
"Yes, it appears to be the staff of the greenmage, although I am not certain. Can anyone decipher these marks upon it?"
Arminas carefully examines the staff as it leans against the tree. He then picks up the staff and walks over to the Hornbeam seeking a way to release whomever may be trapped inside.

"Hornbeam, Carinus betulus, it resembles a beech. Prefers low lying rich soils or clays and is shade tolerant. Bark can be used to make an infusion against feelings of exhaustion and tiredness." Thalpius states the facts in a mechanical manner.
"Devotion of time and attention to acquiring information or knowledge is time well spent," adds Thadius his voice deep and resounding. Returning to his own, lighter voice, he adds, "but its no fun, eh Thalpius?" "No fun at all!" chimes in Thalpius, continuing, "Father Deeproot makes us work too hard. Who wants to learn things about boring old trees? Not you master dwarf, eh?" he adds addressing Bralin, "or you?" he says pointing a grubby finger at Any. Thadius continues, speaking to the bard, "would you want to spend a beautiful day digging in the dirt when you could be singing and dancing? When there is food to eat, wine to drink, and" his eyes slide over to Harvest Mood, "women to be loved?" "So we shut him up," volunteers Thalpius,
"hid away," adds Thadius,

"out of sight."
Harvest calls out, and gets a response as a muffled voice answers, "Help! Let me out!" She's pretty sure it came from the foremost of the trio of trees. Arminus approaches with the great staff that was leaning against the Willow. The satyrs look like they are about to flee.

"Thank you for your kind words, Arminas Calaelen. But there is no debt here." She holds forth the plain stick, the wand of healing power. "This belongs to us all. It is the gift of the Pitchfork Council that we may do good and right that which has been drawn astray. Your strong right arm has ever been welcome to such ends."
The monk little monk eyes the remaining members of the party, balancing degrees of injury with need. Andrath Silverhand carries many wounds. And yet, his constitution is stout. Harvest turns her steps to Ashalan Lathanyel.
"YOU ... " Harvest Moon wheels on the satyr as he slides up next to her. Her finger stabs in the direction of the forest brush, a silent command, her words yet unspoken. Then in a voice more controled, "There will be no women to be loved until you make your vow." She turns again to her task. "Please go away."
As Harvest ministers to the wounds of the follower of Alemi, she responds to the voice from the tree.
"Please tell us how we may help you," she calls. "Also, please tell us who you are." There are reasons behind imprisonment and incarceration, and not all are deserving to be released. "Andrath Silverhand, Paladin Lorth, do you recognize the voice coming from this tree as that of your Greenmage?"

The two satyr's seem quite absorbed in their discussion of the merits of one plant versus another until Lorth raises his sword to chop the tree. "No!" they cry out in unison.
From inside the foremost Hornbeam a muffled voice responds to Ashalan's knocking. "In here! Please help me out." A long, thin fissure traces its way down the trunk of the giant tree. Recent growth has almost sealed it over. "Use the staff" the voice calls out. "Use the staff!"

Satisfied that Lorth means no harm to the tree, the two satyr's continue their 'discussion' with Harvest Moon.
"You are right" Thalpius looks at Harvest, "a comeuppance is what he deserves." "Yes, a comeuppance" parrots Thadius, "I told you she liked us" a huge smile breaks across the satyr's face as he dances about the little brown monk.
Andrath, Any, and Arminas puzzle the meaning of the runes and how to retrieve the greenmage from his prison while Bralin and Lorth stand watch.
Before the greenmage can answer any questions, Arminus touches the staff against the fissure in the large hornbeam. Waves of energy pulse from the staff, and the bark and outer layers of wood begin to soften and push away, widening the fissure. The gaunt arm of Gryntymm Deeproot reaches through the hole to grasp the staff, and soon enough room is created for the weakened greenmage to exit his prison.
"Thank you, thank you all for helping me." The greenmage, weak from thirst and deprivation sits down at the base of the tree, it's fissure closed over once again.

Gryntymm Deeproot, the Greenmage of the Culverwood sits at the base of the tree and squints in the bright sunlight, trying to make out the identity of his rescuers. Many days locked inside the Hornbeam have taken their toll. The once huge man, is shrunken and emasciated. His thin form obscured by his long dark cloak, the colour of forest shadows.
Villemus senses nothing untoward, but rather picks up a feeling of honest concern, along with a strong current of magical energy undiminished by the mage's weakened state.
The Greenmage gratefully accepts food and water from Any, and Ashalan. His face clouds at the barrage of questions.
"Thadius and Thalpius led you here?" he asks. "Where are they? Are they alright? They haven't hurt anyone have they?" The mage is obviously concerned for the well being of his charges, who are doing their best to remain inconspicuous, as they hide behind Harvest Moon.
Leaning heavily on his magical staff, Grynntym rises unsteadily. "Yes. Elves moving north. But I did not know what drove them. So much was happening." He sighs wearily and leans against the tree, "is happening..." Looking at Arminus, he adds "Parnoth you say? I thought it might have something to do with the Fey King, Eberyon's return, but you say it is Parnoth?" He shakes his head wearily.
"Make camp here. You will be safe, and I must rest. Tomorrow I will go north and seek out Dulcet and the Pitchfork Council. I fear I must charge you with calling on the Council of Elders in Emerald City."

Then he will begin to arrange a camp--gather fallen wood, make a fire, and locate and prepare a place for himself to sleep. "I am Harvest Moon. Please excuse me for pressing such a matter in at time when you are still weak from imprisonment. But the satyrs Thadius and Thalpius have demanded from passersby gold. More ... "
The monk hesitates.
" ... they demanded that women be rendered unto them. ... "
"I ... cannot but imagine that they have made such demands for any reason save forced sexual congress. It is a grave offense against another person. They ... they seem to lack a responsibility for their actions. They are simple-minded, without self-control. They ... have indicated that you have forced them to dig, and that this is onerous to them ... They ... they refuse to swear a vow to refrain ... "
The young monk stammers. Her face is flushed red.
"I am sorry, but I must find an assurance that there will be justice and safety for the general public."

Ash helps in any way the he can to get the camp situated. When his tasks are done, Ash approaches the greenmage and offers his bedroll to the bedraggled Gryntymm.
"If it would not be too much to ask Greenmage, I would like to hear how you've come to master the magicks of this wood."
Ash sits back with an eager grin on his face, obviously eager to learn whatever he can from the powerful mage.
Bralin Friday August 19th, 2005 2:53:36 PM
The dwarf waits. His comrades continue speaking, but none seem to have noticed they have just been handed a task.
"I fear I must charge you with calling on the Council of Elders in Emerald City."
"To what purpose?" Bralin replies.
Arminas (AC 21, HP 21/25) Friday August 19th, 2005 6:47:55 PM
Arminas responds to the question from the greenmage, with some doubt in his voice:
"We were told that Parnoth requires all inhabitants of the Culverwood to wear a bracelet or something like that, and that they must swear an oath of slavery or be put to death. Apparently Parnoth felt that Ebyeron was a threat, and struck out. I really don't understand all this too well."
Looking at Bralin as he posts his question, Arminas looks to the greenmage for an answer.
Andrath Saturday August 20th, 2005 8:33:46 PM
Andrath can't help but chuckle at the earnest monk's continued claims against the two satyrs. Unlike Harvest, he has experienced their sense of humor before and wonders if their demands are not more show than substance.
Lorth (Sub James) Saturday August 20th, 2005 9:21:46 PM
Lorth opens his pack and fishes out his bedroll which he places near Any's camp fire. The paladin moves toward Bralin and Arminas to expresses his concern for the elves in the party. "If we are to venture further into Parnoth's domain, how will we keep those of elven blood from harm?"
DM Bob & Carla Sunday August 21st, 2005 9:48:02 PM
Gryntymm waves off the offer of healing, answering "I will be fine young bard, I just need a bit of food and drink." When Any begins gathering materials for a fire, the greenmage calls out, "just dead wood, and just a small fire if you please."
Gryntymm listens patiently as Harvest describes the malfeasance of the two satyrs, before responding to her concerns. "Did either Thadius or Thalpius lay a hand upon your person?" he asks. "They are mischeivious pranksters, no doubt, but I have never known them to harm anyone." He continues, "still, they have changed much since the awakening, and there is the matter of locking me away inside the tree..." Gryntymm spots his two charges as they do their best to remain inconspicuous. "Thadius...Thalpius...come here that I might have a word with you!" There is a serious tone to the greenmage's voice, and the two satyrs reluctantly come forward to face the music. "We didn't mean any harm, father" Thadius blurts out. "We were just having some fun." "We didn't really mean it," replies Thalpius. The two satyrs appear remorseful. Gryntymm pointedly explains that the two satyrs have come perilously close immorality with their miscreancy, and degenerate behavior. "No, means no!" he reinforces, looking over their heads to the small brown monk. With a grim look he assigns them the task of helping Any gather the firewood. "I may have to bring them deeper into the wilds of the forest where contact with the outside world will be lessened. In the interim, I shall keep them close by me."
"As for my ability to commune with nature, I can no more explain the mechanics than I can predict the future. Suffice it so say that I have lived my entire life within the Culverwood and through patience and discipline, have gained some degree of harmony with the energy that flows through the forest." The greenmage holds his hand over the exposed soil of the forest floor and almost immediately a small host of earthworms and other invertebrates rise to the surface.
Gryntymm listens to Bralin and Arminus as they express their concerns and questions. "Parnoth the Terrible rules the Emerald Kingdom in the Southern Culverwood with an iron claw. He has despoiled much of the wild beauty off the forest, replacing it with manicured lawns and trees pruned and bent into un-natural conformity. Perhaps he worries that the elves are in league with Ebyron and will assist nature in reversing his influence? The Council of Elders are mostly puppets under Parnoth's control, but some may be sympathetic to the elves and their plight. We must impress upon them that enslaving the elves will only lead to violence. They must convince Parnoth to retract his decree. I will return to Jarlwolf and discuss diverse matters with the Pitchfork Council. I fervently hope to find a peaceful solution, for war with a dragon is a terrible and destructive thing."
As the sun sets, the greenmage draws his large cloak closer about his now thin form.
Harvest (HP 33/34) Sunday August 21st, 2005 11:23:31 PM
Harvest Moon watches as Thadius and Thalpius are taken to task. Now that justice has, at last, had its day, the light of satisfaction burns less bright than she had thought it would.
The previous actions of the satyrs, so monstrous and inhuman before, now seem silly, even trivial. No. Not quite trivial. Even in jest it is a terrible thing. And yet ...
Harvest sighs as the pair stammer their contrition.
As night draws darkness down upon the green forest, Harvest tends to the evening meal. The lack of a fire and moreover, a prohibition on hunting would necessitate a meal of rations. Still, this does not necessarily mean dining on flavorless fodder. Harvest Moon draws a wand from her haversack and begins the enchantment of the evening meal.
Trail rations warm to the touch, and take on the flavor of juicy grilled mushrooms on hot bread with smoked cheese. A second spell gives bits of crumbled ration the taste of tart berries for desert.
Tomorrow will be another day.
"Will it be dangerous?" she asks. "Entering the Emerald City? It is the land of Parnoth, is it not? And he is a slaver."

Bralin Monday August 22nd, 2005 7:51:13 AM
Bralin nods as Gryntymm explains his affinity with the forest. The dwarf's own experiences with the earth are not dissimiliar.
And yet, the druid has not answered Lorth's perceptive query. "Our company has many elves," Bralin reiterates the paladin's words. "Ye would have us take them to the heart of an enemy nation on a diplomatic quest. We are not diplomats. Our intended audience holds no real power. Your quest is ill-conceived."
The dwarf speaks matter of factly, holding no animosity toward Gryntymm.
Lorth (I'm back, thanks James) Monday August 22nd, 2005 8:53:57 AM
Lorth nods at Bralin, "I agree, it would be very difficult for us to be diplomatic in a slaver's kingdom."
Any Monday August 22nd, 2005 10:05:01 AM
"I have a bit of experience with non-magical disguises, having worked with an entertainment troupe, but I am not sure if they would stand up to close scrutiny. I can disguise myself for short periods very well using magic, but that would only serve for me. Unless we can gain greater aid in this matter , I am not sure how we will proceed."
Any then offers to take the mid night watch and settles himself near the fire to eat Harvests delicious meal.
Arminas (AC 21, HP 21/25) d20+9=21 Monday August 22nd, 2005 3:05:12 PM
As the greenmage admonishes the satyrs, Arminas looks to Harvest.
"If you are satisfied, then it is finished. However, if you demand further action, then I stand with you."
Arminas listens to Gryntymm's talk of the Emerald Kingdom, nodding as he mentions that Parnoth needs to retract his decree.
"It is true, that some of us may be taken into slavery, should we be found. I have never used disgiuse, although I would be willing to try. Hiding deep in the forest works, although walking into the council will be a different matter."
Listening to Bralin and Lorth, Arminas adds:
"I do not know if it is wise to enter the Emerald Kingdom or not. If we have a chance to stop Parnoth, perhaps wisdom should be traded for action. I have heard of an arrow, capable of slaying a dragon. I would be willing to give my life do accomplish such a thing. Many die for lesser causes."
When discussion is finished, Arminas then silently walks toward the base of the large trees that had entrapped Gryntymm, and begins to climb. When he is high in the trees, he settles onto a forked branch for the night. Erwen his eagle flys down and perches nearby.

Ash listens, eyes wide with wonder, as Gryntymm explains his affinty with the magic of the Culverwood.
But those eyes, so bright with the eagerness to learn that of the arcane, become troubled as the talk turns to the troubles caused by Parnoth.
"It does seem a tad foolish for those of us with elven blood to head into the Emerald City, is not that akin to reaching into the flames then wondering why you got burned?"
A thought dawning on him Ash continues, "Though maybe this trouble caused by Parnoth gives us our perfect disguise. If the elven slaves are marked in some way, perhaps the elves in our party can pose as newly captured slaves being escorted to the Emerald City by these fearsome mercanaries to be persented to the Council?"
"I'm not one much for fancy plans, but that seems as good as any. Anyone else have any ideas on how to safely get into the city without drawing much attention?"
Andrath Monday August 22nd, 2005 8:42:59 PM
"Maybe the best course of action is to follow you to meet with the council, and find out what they have to suggest? I am also unclear as to what you expect us to do. Stand in front of the council and plead for them not to persecute the elves? Plead for them to rebel against Parnoth?"

DM Bob & Carla Monday August 22nd, 2005 10:47:21 PM
As the small brown monk puts together an evening meal, Bralin shows uncommon concern for the elves in the party and articulates his opinion that a diplomatic mission is doomed to failure. Lorth concurs with the dwarf. Worried about their safety, those of elven blood express their fears. Andrath suggests the party return to Jarlwolf and ask the Pitchfork Council for advice. Arminus doubts the wisdom of heading south, but is tempted by the prospect of facing a dragon. Any volunteers disguises, while Ashalan suggests a plan. The elves can pose as captured slaves, and the non elves as mercenaries and slavers!
Rubbing his nose, the Greenmage sighs. "You are right, Parnoth is belligerent, and easily provoked, and yet," he pauses, and there is optimism in his voice, "green dragons are curious and like to question those who have traveled over the land, to learn about their societies, and what if going on in the Wold." A dark look color's the large man's countenance, and he voices a new concern, "I wonder what fate has befallen the elves of the council?" Looking at the party assembled about the small camp fire, he continues, "The Council of Elders are...or were the governing organization of Emerald City. They report to Parnoth. They send out the tax collectors, welcome dignitaries, interview and debrief foreigners who come to do business in that prosperous city. They meet weekly in the Elders Hall....or, at least, they used to. I would have had you go to them, to gather information, to learn why Parnoth has taken the course of action that has sent the elves of the Culverwood fleeing north for sanctuary, but now I am not so sure..."
Putting down the bowl that held his share of the dinner prepared by Harvest Moon, the Greenmage sighs heavily. "So much is happening." His eyes rest on the satyrs, curled up one next to the other and sleeping within the glow of the small fire. "We will share your camp this night, and speak more on the morrow."
As the moon moves across the starry sky, Arminus seeks refuge in the arms of the hornbeam while folks below settle in for the night. Villemus, the mysterious drow, takes up a solitary first watch.

She touches a small hand to his arm.
"Thank you again. For your support. It is a comfort ... " The monk's voice trails to silence. Her brown eyes look off into the night. "Thank you again, Arminas Calaelen," she repeats before stepping into the orange glow of the small fire.
"I will take the early morning watch," Harvest announces as she spread her bedroll. "There will be a humble breakfast waiting when you awake."

DM Bob & Carla Wednesday August 24th, 2005 12:33:52 AM
The party agree on watches, and settle in anticipating a quiet night. However, with sleep comes a disturbing vision.. The head of a horned man, eyes the color of the sky, head tilted back...
"Ha ha ha! Ah ha ha ha!" the sound grows louder.
Arms stretched out as vines entwine the satyr's form, flowers turn their faces adoringly, beasts of the forest crawl, bellies low to the ground to grovel at the feet of the horned one with the legs of a goat.
Images come in quick succession. Some familiar some foreign and strange...a wagon full to brimming with ripe produce trundling along the road towards an elf refugee camp...hungry children clamouring for the food as parents watch, relief flooding their faces...a cottage choked in vines as the tenant chops at the foliage, trying to clear it away from door and window...a farmer, rubbing his eyes in disbelief as his cow is delivered of a third gangly calf...a river flooding over into the streets of a foreign city as its citizens run through the streets, wolves of gigantic proportions close on their heels...a volcano erupting, ash and steam billowing from its vent...a magical floating city tilted at a crazy angle as cable-like vines reach from the forest below to wrap around the glowing spires of its upper level...Thadius and Thalpius, goat legs and horns distorted and out of proportion.. "Ha ha ha! Ah ha ha ha!"
A sweet voice, a female voice is heard like a sigh, "Ebyron...my husband...my king...King of the Fey...lifetimes ago you were put to sleep...too unpredictable...too chaotic...dangerous..."
A male voice, young, imperious, "Maab, my dear queen! See how nature loves me?! See how it celebrates my return? My awakening, willed by the song of elves? I am reborn! You have had your chance to rule, but now I reclaim my throne!"
The fleeting image of a small perfect female. Elf? Halfling? Dwarf? Human child? Dressed in silver with a silver crown, her translucent skin emitting a radiant light. Fae Queen Maab uncurls her fingers and looks down into the palm of her hand. Three small acorns lie there. "Let those who live in the Wold choose. A time will come for a decision that no one creature, no one race, can decide. Let the runes grow where they may. I have done all I can. I can do no more." Listlessly, she drops the three acorns.
Arminus drops gently from the tree after his watch, and wakes Harvest Moon and Bralin. A feminine voice, seemingly carried on the wind can be heard wispering, "Defeat the Avatar, then make your choice."
Each member of the Swords of Light discovers three acorns near to where they were sleeping. Each is inscribed with a different rune: REFORM, SLEEP, DIE.

Any arises with the first light of morning, and quickly stows his gear. He turns to the fire, and thanking Harvest for her late watch and the preparation of food, breaks his fast, and begins to look around the clearing.
As he is packing his gear he notices three acorns nearby, with the words "reform, sleep, die" upon them. he turns to hte others as they awake and asks, "I had thought I dreamed this. What do you think they mean?"
Harvest Wednesday August 24th, 2005 10:34:33 AM
Harvest Moon awakens from the dream before the time of her watch. Time passes as she stares up into the star filled sky, thinking upon the dream.
She rises at Arminas Calaelen's approach to find the three nuts, rune inscribed. As she makes her first rounds, she notes a set is placed near each of the others as well.
Harvest begins preparations for the morning meal with the first faint orange glow of the sun.
"There has been trouble," Harvest replies in answer to the bard's question, "with the rising of the Fae King. Most like."
She removes the three acorns from her pouch and raises them up to view the runes in the morning light.
"It is possible that nature given full reign is not seen as the wisest course for all."
"Defeat the Avatar, then make your choice," Harvest Moon repeats. "It appears that we are to be the pivot upon which wisdom turns."
After seeing to the morning meal, the small brown girl kneels in the grass nearby. In her hands, she turns the rough knot of root wood over and over. Throughout the communion, her brows are contracted in a frown.

Standing before the three acorns, the wild looking half-drow pondered over the meanings of the three runes: REFORM, SLEEP, DIE.
What could they mean? For whom do these words apply to?
Villemus continued staring at the acorn while Bone hopped down from his master and sniffed at the acorns.
OoC Sorry for my irregular postings. work is confusing my sense of days. sometimes i forgot it had been a day already.
Arminas Wednesday August 24th, 2005 2:29:16 PM
Arminas gathers the three acorns, and studies them intently. Rolling each of them in his fingers and feeling their weight. They seem normal, if it were not for the runes inscribed. He then tucks the acorns into an inner pocket of his cloak.
Upon seeing Harvest preparing the meal, his stomach growls. It had been a long day, and he we so caught up in the words of the greenmage that he forgot to eat dinner. Now, the power of the food overwhelmed him. Quickly gulping down some food, he says:
"This is good, what do you call it?"
Upon hearing the words of Harvest and Villemus regarding the dream, Arminas has a worried look upon his face.
"Does not an Avatar represent a god? It seems to be beyond us. The acorns though I think are to determine if the Fae King Reforms, Sleeps, or Dies. That is my guess, though I am probably wrong. I don't want the fate of the Wold in my hands."

Hearing the voice on the wind, and spotting the acorns on the ground, he thinks, more elf trouble.
DM Bob and Carla Thursday August 25th, 2005 12:17:48 AM
"It seems I too will have a say in the fate of the King," announces Gryntymm as he scoops up 3 acorns and pockets them, "but not at this moment." He musses the tousled head of Thadius. "Wake up, sleepy-head! We have far to go today."
Harvest makes a nutritious and filling breakfast. Arminus realizes everything tastes good when you are hungry. Even trail rations! The Swords of Light are a pensive lot as they break camp, preoccupied by the dream and what it might signify.
"Well?" asks the greenmage, Thadius and Thalpius stand quiet and well behaved at his side. "What will it be?" Gryntymm studies the adventurers. "Will it be exploration of the southern fringes of the Culverwood to learn what has aroused Parnoth and inspired his recent actions, or, return to Jarlwolf to help the council decide what to do with the refugees seeking asylum in Cinnamon Valley?"
Lorth Thursday August 25th, 2005 7:24:59 AM
Lorth awakes slowly, he stowes his gear and places his acorns in his pack. Their appearence doesn't surprise him much, he has seen stranger stuff before.
He then eats breakfast and spends some time contemplating how he will vote for this fae king. He decides Sleep or reform are the two best options and dissmisses death.
When his friends are ready to move, Lorth concentrates on the vision of the horse he has been having of late. He attempts to call it to him by visualizing it standing before him.
Villemus Thursday August 25th, 2005 8:27:44 AM
After much delibrations, Villemus picked up the acorns and placed them into his pouch before voicing his opinions.
"Parnoth seemed to be the source of these troubles. I say we explore of the southern fringes of the Culverwood for I am sure the councils have the refugees well in hand."
Ashalan Thursday August 25th, 2005 9:49:49 AM
Strangely quiet since awakening, the visons of the night before couding his thoughts, Ash nods in assent to Villemus' suggestion.
"I too agree that seeing what exactly Parnoth is up to would be better use of our time. And who knows, maybe this "Council" can shed some light or offer some help as well."
Any Thursday August 25th, 2005 9:52:53 AM
"As you say my friend, Parnoth does seem to be the source of these troubles. Whether the council has the refugees in hand, or not, is still to be seen, but I fear it must be their challenge to take them in hand. I feel we must continue as we have begun, to go onward not backward, and though we may not feel up to the task of dealing with this dragon,we must attempt it. Tho' how we are to proceed , I do not know."
Any then awaits the council of the other members of the party.
Harvest Thursday August 25th, 2005 10:41:28 AM Explore the south of the Culverwood or return to Jarlwolf to help the refugees?
Harvest Moon steps back within herself. Why had she come to this place from the Contested Kingdoms? For what reason does she now travel with this group that calls themselves the Swords of Light?
Save to escape the pain of her mother's death, there has been little in the way of purpose. Instincts. Following instincts. And what do instincts say to do now?
The core of her is drawn back to Jarlwolf. The daily life of the elven refugees, so like that lived by her mother and herself. They could learn from the things that she knows. Their life could be easier, better than hers had been.
But, would not that perpetuate more of the same? Is the gift of a homeless life to be valued, no matter it's ease? If she had had a home to which to return, would she not herself have returned there? If for no other reason than to bury her mother in the ground of what might be called Home.
"I too, would go south to the Emerald Kingdom." Harvest crushes down her bedroll into a tight bundle and secures the ties. "Perhaps there, we might find a way to restore the Culverwood to the elves who have been displaced. It would be best if they were allowed the freedom to return home."

Silently, Bralin scoops the acorns into his thick, gnarled hands. The dwarf spends several long moments regarding the words "REFORM, SLEEP, DIE". Defeat the avatar
Many questions roll around Bralin's head - forming, shattering, and reforming anew as he ponders. He says not a word.
His comrades speak of taking up the druid's quest and heading south. As he already stated his opinion in that matter, the warrior sees no need to repeat it. He merely looks at Andrath and awaits his decision.
It is odd that none have mentioned the third option - Seek out this avatar. His hand, of its own accord, continues to roll the three acorns around and around and around....
Arminas Thursday August 25th, 2005 10:49:37 PM
Looking about, Arminas is surprised that the group is willing to go further into Parnoth's Kingdom, where the two most likely outcomes are slavery and death. Yet Arminas is pleased.
"I have joined up with a brave lot. Though we will probably die, we will at least make an attempt to stop Parnoth. The fate of the elves are in our hands. I expected the elves to take action, but I am proud to travel with humans and a dwarf who are willing to die to help us. Truely we are all equal in the Wold!"
Arminas throws his pack and bow over his shoulder, and looks anxious to get started.
"Now, if we only had an arrow of dragon slaying!"
Andrath Thursday August 25th, 2005 11:40:18 PM
Pocketing his three acorns without a second thought, Andrath exclaims, "I'm all for going to the city!"
Tossing his pack over his shoulder, Andrath gets ready to scout for the party. "Which way, ranger?" he asks Arminus.
DM Bob & Carla Friday August 26th, 2005 12:38:25 AM
Cognizant of the perilous journey ahead, the party determines the best course of action is to investigate the goings on at the southern fringes of the Culverwood. Harvest Moon points out that winning the Culverwood back for the elves might also solve the problems of the refugee camps in Cinnamon Valley. Villemus supports checking out the southern part of the forest while Any and Ash seem interested in dealing with Parnoth up close and personal. Arminus cheerily volunteers that they are all going to die, while Bralin's mind turns to the avatar augured in the dream.
Gryntymm looks at the party, and then approaches Arminus. "You do not look like a stranger in these woods!" The greenmage pulls a single green leaf from his staff and pins it to the ranger's chest. "Wear this leaf at all times, and stay together." He turns to the others, "The Culverwood is no ordinary forest. It has a mind of its own and it does not tolerate outsiders. "Tree of Parting. Folbre." Harvest Moon repeats the names to settle them into her memory. She adjusts the straps on her haversack, settling the weight into a comfortable position.
The weight of the acorns in her pouch present themselves as the more significant load in her mind. The How. The Why. The Where of things. And yet, all things will come in their own time, will they not. If the acorns have fallen to them, will not the task of using and choosing as well?
Eyes and ears tuned to the forest around them, the brown monk falls into her place in line with only the faintest of doubts that there might not be one within the party who knows the way to this "Tree of Parting."

Arminas looks at the leaf on his tunic and then back to the greenmage. In an almost reverent voice, he says:
"I will do my best to see that no harm comes to this forest. We will do as you instruct."
Looking at the others, he adds:
"It appears that it has again been thrust upon me to lead you through this forest. It is vital that all do and act as Gryntymm has commanded. We must all stay together, for the forest gets very dangerous as we head deeper into it. In the past I have asked for assurance of your desire to have me lead. (he glances at Bralin). I have been ignored. Fine. I will lead, but follow only if you are willing for me to lead."
Facing the deep forest, Arminas adds:
"This way to the Tree of Parting."
Bralin Saturday August 27th, 2005 1:25:19 PM We must all stay together Arminas states.
"So The Greenmage has instructed," Bralin points out. The elf's constant need for self-validation is becoming a distraction. The dwarf reluctantly decides he will have to respond or this incessant mewling will likely continue the entire trip.
"Andrath leads this company. I follow him. You are designated to lead through this wood. Lead then. We will follow. Tis obvious that we must do so."
There. Surely that will satisfy the elf's thirst for justification.

"The paths through the Culverwood are ever changing," the Greenmage adds, as he prepares to depart the camp himself. "Stray not from the Fairy Trail and you should find the Tree of Parting in 5 or 6 days." Turning north, he calls lightly. "Thadius, Thalpius, a merry song for our march!"
Soon after, the party quits the area. The elven ranger bearing Gryntymm's living leaf on his chest confidently leads the way as the others follow behind. Andrath, with his sharp eyes, stays close to Arminus while the others follow behind. Harvest and Ashlan wonder how the party will find Folbre and the tree of which the greenmage spoke, while Villemus eagerly follows, happy to be moving on. Day upon day within the green forest. Canyons of green. Canopies of green. Never seeing the horizon. So unlike the open, sometimes trampled and burned landscape of the Contested Kingdoms.
Harvest Moon moves along the trail with eyes wide and ears open, watching, listening, learning.
During periods designated for foraging, the young monk stays beside Arminas Calaelen, aiding him and taking his direction. It is during these times in particular that Harvest Moon's face forms into a small dissatisfied moue as the low trailing hem of her robe catches upon this twig or that bramble.
Harvest watches the growing unease of the elven members of the party. Can the certainty of slavery be so great? Before settling into bedrolls each evening, she prays for the party to ease their minds and to send them more easily down the road to sleep. Each evening, she steps to the side of each who do not have spells of their own, to touch them with some small Guidance or Resistance from their fears.

Trying to help where he could, following the patient instruction of Arminas, Ash helped the group in their trek as much as he could. (Mostly gathering firewood, and staying out of the way)(Survival Check: 10)
Nightly communuion and meditation with his god Alemi kept the worry and strain of the impending danger of heading farther south at bay. (Will Save: 13)

Arminas carefully chooses the path as they move through the Culverwood. The Fairy Trail is plain to him (nat 20 survival), although he understands that it may not be the same to others. The blessings of the small monk give Arminas hope as they travel.
"Dear one, your blessings are a comfort to me. We will make it through this forest. Usually it is a pleasure to be here. Perhaps the responsibility I have to lead and the threat of slavery seem to have taken the joy out of the journey."
Sensing Andrath's discomfort:
"Andrath, do not worry about the forest. I know and understand it well. If we were in a large city I would be lost, and would rely upon your knowledge."
As they travel, Arminas forages for plants and occasionally takes a small animal (provide rations for 2 people).
"No Any, it is fair to take what you may eat, but no more. That does not appear to be a problem for this journey, as game is scarce deep in the forest."
At night, sleep comes easy after a difficult day of finding the path through the forest. Although dreams of slavery trouble Arminas, he has dreams of overcoming Parnoth that give him hope. False hope no doubt.
Arminas trys to make friends with Bralin, by always bringing him a portion of the food he finds.
Each morning Arminas takes watch in the dark, and awakens others early. He meditates, keeping his entagle spell ready. Erwen flys along, but sometimes has difficulty getting down to the forest floor through the tangle of limbs.

Bralin settles into the role of rear guard without comment. He passes the time watching his companions and watching the trail.
The first night, the dwarf quickly retires and rests. This wood is dangerous, and he must be at his best. But during the second day, he realizes the journey may well be uneventful, and mayhap some personal time is in order. For a couple hours in the early evening of nights 2 and 3, Bralin withdraws from his pack an unfinished statuette of green marble and his stone working tools, and sets to work. As usual, the dwarf is silent, but the steady clink and scrape of metal on stone chips away steadily at the forest sounds.

By day 4, Bralin has realized food may become an issue. That morning he addresses the company. "The Chamber has granted me a spell to make unclean food clean once more. Should ye find spoiled meat or fruit, gather it up."
Bralin is willing to take some food from Arminas, but insists on the elf getting the greater portion. "Dwarves can survive for some time without food," he states matter-of-factly.
On the 4th evening, he looks up the height of the opposing cliff. "Must we climb?" he asks "Or does the trail stay on this side of the shore?"
Bralin settles down and reaches for his pack, watching Lorth, and looking for an opportunity to speak to the paladin.

Wearing the disguise of a rugged human woodsman now, Villemus was feeling quite at home in the wilderness, although he wasn't used to having such a large company.
As the necromantic ranger and his familiar trailed behind Arminas, Villemus keen elven eyes kept a lookout for edibles - Bone was complaining about the lack of food. Villemus was pretty sure that he had at least 5 days worth of trail rations though. Regardless, the wild drow did manage to gather sufficient roots and mushrooms to prepare a small helping of wild salads (enough for 4 pax).
Walking over to the elf and dwarf, Villemus beamed brightly and said, "No worry. There is enough for everybody! Enjoy yourself." The woodsman/drow passed his salads around.
The rest of the journey passed uneventfully although Villemus suspected some arcane spells were affecting the moods of the elves, himself included (Will:12, Spellcraft:27). However, the willful half-drow managed to fight off the unexplained fears which threatened to overwhelm him every night. Bone stood by his master, glaring at the woods, daring the denizens to harm his beloved drow.
Nearing the end of the 4th day, the party stopped at the base of a steep treed slope, considering their next move. While the rest are considering their options, Villemus walked over to the pond and took out his lines and fish hook. Before long, the eccentric woodsman/drow was cheerfully fishing beside the pool.
Bone is dying for a fish or shrimp, was his only reply.

In his element, the slender wood elf confidently leads the way along the Fairy Trail. Bolstered by Harvest Moon's support, Arminus is able to snare two small rabbits. Any supplements the fare with some wild fruits and tubers. He even manages to snag 5 eggs from an abandoned nest. Although they smell a little, the dwarf is able to cast his spell and render them safe for consumption. Villemus turns up some edible greens and some fungi. Ashalan, Arminus, and Villemus are able to overcome their concerns and get a decent rest most nights, but the bard tosses and turns and dark circles under his eyes bear witness to the toll taken by stress. Villemus wonders if there is a magical component to the nervous tension inflicting the elvish of the party.
After a dinner of trail rations supplemented by the foraging of the party, Bralin settles next to his pack. Soon the quiet clink and snick of his work accompanies the party's low voices as they sit around the small fire prepared by Ashalan to discuss past events, the strange dream that seems to haunt them, and their current quest.
Villemus, crouched by the shore with his fishing lines in hand is the first to see them, but soon all the party are aware of two large grey boats progressing down river in the early evening mist that skims the surface of the water. Two figures maneuver the boats with long-handled paddles while a third person occupies the middle. The boats look as if they could hold many more passengers or a significant amount of cargo.
