Theodore and Macaw  d20+4=20 d20+2=21 d20+6=11 d20+4=10 d20+4=20
Sunday August 21st, 2005 2:30:28 PM

(OOC - Sorry for the missed post, guys!)

Trying to tempt an illusion with an illusion! Theodore almost smacks himself for not having seen it before. Seeing Vauhwyt and Vorelle take off after the pixie thief, he decides he is too far away to be of any help and instead focuses his attention on the room that Clu'eth disappeared into.

Theodore keeps his concentration focused on his own illusion and suddenly the giant has decided against retreat and is now regarding the remaining fey as a tempting treat. He begins to march north and east to get in position for a mighty blow, roaring as he goes.

Theodore moves 30' to his east.

Temple Battle Round 11 (DM Kup)  d20+4=15 d20+4=6 d2=1 d20+4=12 d20+4=21 d3=1 d8=5
Sunday August 21st, 2005 11:16:55 PM

Abandoning caution, Vauhwyt dashed southward toward the stairs and the fleeing pixie. The fey behind her slashed its parting gift (attack 15), but missed. Rose jumped onto the liontaur's back, also provoking a slashing goodbye from the other fey (attack 6), but equally ineffective. She clung on as they moved south. (V and everyone: I'm working with 28.8 dialup this week! S-l-o-w. Do me a huge favor and post relevant stats, for example, for the boar and Mookie as they become relevant, okay? Checking this stuff is excruciating for me right now, and that would be a huge favor! Thanks!)

Vorelle, too, ran as far and as fast as she could. Dietrich joined them; his fastest path took him straight through the smoky unreality of the remorhaz that he had previously so feard, and that he now cursed for believing so readily.

Olyn, having come to the same realization, came to the opposition conclusion; he ran north toward the lab, from which the sounds of destruction and battle still emerged. (O, 'cause I wasn't sure what you wanted to do about the fey creatures blocking the way, I stopped you at 60'. If you want to run past them next round and risk AoO's, just say so.) Theodore moved in the same direction, his illusory giant rushing up behind him and Olyn.

Berlon moved to the oil-soaked webs and lit them, watching with satisfaction as the centipedes within writhed and shriveled in the flames. (Nice!)

Zayne fired two arrows, one of which struck (determined randomly) the first blue fey creature (F1). It barely scratched the resilient creature, however.

Left with just Zayne as a likely opponent, the blue fey creatures converged! The blue fey creature that Zayne had just targeted (F1) closed (to BA22 +1) and attacked, (attacks 12 & 21, damage 1 hp!) barely harming the ranger. The second creature (F2) also closed (to BB24 +2) and unleashed its breath weapon! (5 HP damage, REF 12 half)

More crashes and shouts could be heard from the alchemist's lab. From the stairs, there was no sign of the fleeing pixie--or of the antidote vials.

All: given the connection difficulties here, it's going to be very hard for me to supply map updates this week. Please make note of the positions that I've given here:

F1: BA22, +1
F2: BB24, +2
Theo: AR23
Zayne: BA23
Olyn: AV26

Dietrich: AL44

Mookie and the boar: dunno, really. At least BE46 for the boar, BG46 for Mookie.

Overwhelming Force (DM Kup)
Monday August 22nd, 2005 9:46:35 PM

While half of the party rushed south to block the doors from an escaping pixie, Zayne concentrated his firepower on the blue fey creatures. His arrow impaled the wounded one (F2), leaving just one of the original cohort of fey (F1). It eyed him warily. At the same moment, a cry of triumph and a heavy, wet thud from the alchemists' lab announced Clu'eth's victory over the second--and last--pixie there.

Wherever the pixie with the antidote had gone, it was nowhere to be seen or observed. After disappearing down the stairs to the level Below several seconds earlier, it did not re-emerge.

After several minutes of destructive fury, the Temple fell silent once more. Only the bated breath of its defenders, and the muffled wails of still-terrified civilians in the western chapel, broke the silence. The last blue fey creature, whom Zayne kept marked with an arrow, fluttered high up near the ceiling, but made no more offensive moves.

Combat over--depending on your intentions toward the last blue fey creature.

Dietrich thanks Olyn for bringing him back to full combat readiness. He is very distraught that apparently the party didn't manage to guard the cure, but the soldier wants to check this first.

Keeping an eye on the last blue fey, he moves towards the laboratory to ask Clueth if the antidote has really been stolen/destroyed.

If that's the case, Dietrich rushes the group to move after the pixie to the level Below. He doesn't like to go without full magic support etc., but every minute without the cure means the death of many. He also reckons that the remaining clerics can take care of themselves and the wounded now.

Tuesday August 23rd, 2005 3:33:08 PM

[Note: In the bag of Tricks description it says, "It can follow any of the commands described in the Handle Animal skill." I'm pushing that this round!]

Vauhwyt says "Ouch! Rose! You're digging into my back! Please, dear friend, dismount!"

"In fact, could you stay here and MAKE SURE that this door does not open? Spike it shut, maybe."

Then Vauhwyt calls her boar -- COME! SEEK! TRACK!* she urges the animal. She ushers it down the stairs after the pixie.

"Come on, Mookie! Maybe we can still find it!"

=====

*Come: The animal comes to you, even if it normally would not do so.

Seek: The animal moves into an area and looks around for anything that is obviously alive or animate.

Track: The animal tracks the scent presented to it. (This requires the animal to have the scent ability)

Duration is ten minutes for the animal.

Aftermath (DM Kup)
Tuesday August 23rd, 2005 10:06:32 PM

The group set about attempting to ascertain the damage--whether it be the location of the stolen antidote, or the condition of the alchemists' lab.

The latter was all too painfully clear. Whether t was from the pixies' own malicious destruction, or from the valiant efforts of the Temple's defenders to defeat them, the lab had been utterly destroyed. Wrecked bottles, broken tubes, smashed flasks, demolished beakers, and miles of torn and shredded tubing lined the floors. A few frightened alchemists (one of whom looked suspiciously like the polymorphed form of the fled pixie) were busy stamping out small fires in a rainbow of colors. Clu'eth stood in the middle of the room panting over the form of a smashed pixie, its broken body still half-clinging to the head of his mace. "It's gone," he breathed heavily. "All gone."

As to the former--the other pixie, with the missing potions--a brief foray into the Temple's corridors Below revealed a long, dark burrowed tunnel leading into unknown depths. It was from this tunnel, the adventurers might surmise, that the original remorhaz and the others had come; and it was reasonable to suppose that the fled pixie had returned the same way, and none of the other doors appeared disturbed. None of the group's tracking efforts could confirm that, however. (In the meantime, a wounded L'laylon, his forehead gashed by a fey claw, put a light hand on Rose before she marred the Temple's front doors. "There is a saying among my people about halflings, tardily shut barn doors, and escaped riding dogs--I don't suppose it's true?")

Back on the Temple's main floor, Berlon was ordering the last blue fey creature in Elvish to surrender. It continued to hover, but it smirked. "And why not?" it answered in the same language. "You cannot stop the Master now. You've delivered him precisely the ingredients that he needed."

Vorelle looks down the burrowed corridor, then back at Vauhwyt.

"W-we need to f-f-follow," she says. "G-g-g-get the others."

Vauhwyt (Mage Armor), Mookie, and Boar
Wednesday August 24th, 2005 7:38:07 PM

"Right, Vorelle!" says Vauhwyt. "Mookie, go fly back and bring the others fast. Also get anything from that lab that smells like the antidote. Maybe a flask or something. Or pixie blood!"

For a change, Mookie does not argue, and instead just flies off fast.

"Come on!" says Vauhwyt to all her friends in shouting range. She urges her boar on into the tunnel, "SEEK! TRACK!" she urges it. She follows after the invisible pixie as fast as her boar will allow.

Theodore and Macaw
Wednesday August 24th, 2005 9:32:23 PM

Theodore exits from the alchemists' room and looks directly at the floating fey above him.

"Why do you do this?" he asks in Elvish. "Why do you wish to kill these people?"

Questions--and Answers? (DM Kup)
Wednesday August 24th, 2005 9:53:25 PM

The corvid Mookie swiftly winged his way back to the rest of the group. "Boss says we have to track the pixie, so get the lead out!" he cawed.

The blue fey creature merely cackled. "You'll never find it," it chortled in return. "Mistilpix is the swiftest flyer around. And he's invisible, if he hasn't turned into a wolf. Or a rat. Or an alligator. You never can tell, with him. He is the King's finest servant."

(The searchers Below quickly found the pixie's unheard words to be the truth. There was no scent to follow--the pixie must have polymorphed or flown too far, too fast to leave a clear trail.)

"You'll never find the potion before the King has the chance to use it," the fey creature beamed.

"Use it for what?" came a heavy voice. Standing at the door to the alchemists' lab, Clu'eth shook his y mace at the creature. "Tell me, you thrice-accursed beast, or by Wardd, you'll join your fellows in the abyss!"

The creature gave no reply, but behind Clu'eth, one of the alchemists--the one whose form the pixie had mimicked--came forward. His face was ashen and pale. "The potion we were creating was not a simple reversal of the disease," he explained. "It was concentrated--distilled. The purpose was to place it into the water supply to effectuate a long-lasting cure for the entire population. But the formula is easily altered. A drop or two of the original serum, and ...." he shrugged. "What could have been a cure ... could serve as a catalyst--an enhancer to the disease."

The blue fey creature thrust its claws into the air in triumph. "His Majesty will use your unnatural poisons against you! He will use it to restore Nature to this unnatural place you call a city--to wipe away the pestilence of unnatural, perverse 'civilization' and restore the Wild! By midday tomorrow, the potion will be in every well in the City--spread by the King Himself, from His secret lair!"

Dietrich completely agrees with the urge to track the cure (or possible poison) and moves towards the level below, torch in hand.

He listened to what the last pixie said, trying to get any clue, but it only rumbled around. Perhaps they could trick it into saying where that thief fled to.

"You're a little boasting pansy! Your King is just a beast, hiding in a wet cave below the city! You talk so much against our civilization, but your wussy "King" lives in our sewers, where really such a stinking dungeater belongs!"

Dietrich is not exactly the most esperienced with that, but maybe the mocking makes it reveal some info.

Slings and Arrows of Outrageous Misfortune (DM Kup)  d8=3
Thursday August 25th, 2005 11:26:37 PM

Berlon ended the conversation with the blue fey creature barbarian style ("Enough talk!")--the heavy bolt thudded into the creature but barely pierced its formidable hide. In response, it breathed fumes all over the gnome (3 HP damage, REF 12 half).

The others tried to follow the burrowed tunnel. But not far beyond the Temple, the tunnel vanished into one of the rapidly flowing sewer tunnels. The creature could have gone anywhere from there--and with the ability to polymorph apparently at will, how would they try to track it?

Back in the Temple, Clu'eth shouted orders at the priests who had converged with their own heavy crossbows to match Berlon's own, and with a slew of bolts, brought the creature down. Its eyes glazed as it breathed its last. "My Master will restore the natural order of things. This body may fail--but I will see him ... in my dreams." The creature expired and crumpled.

Clu'eth sighed heavily. "So it is lost to us, then," he murmured. "And our City is doomed."

"No," came a voice. The elf priest L'laylon stepped forward. His face was placid as always. "The creature left its clue in the last. We brought this King to the Wold in a dream. It is in a dream that we may contact Him again and learn His plans." The elf paused, and looked at Olyn.

"You know that of which I speak."

Dietrich
Friday August 26th, 2005 3:40:04 PM

Dietrich was already expecting that result from going into the tunnel, but it is disappointing nevertheless. He is also a little disappointed that his attempt to tease the annoying creature into revealing anything useful didn't work either, but at least the critter has finally been neutralized.

The warrior listens to the talks of the clerics and looks with expectation to his friends, hoping there is a way to get after the stolen cure.

L'laylon raised a hand at Olyn's words. "Hold," he said gently. "That is not what I meant. Not just you, brother. All of you must go."

The elf priest reached into his robes and held aloft a vial. "This is the essence of the Fey King's dream-stuff. There is enough here for each of you to partake and to enter the dream-Wold."

"Wait!" Clu'eth barked, marching forward. "I had no knowledge of this. Where did you get this from?" The elf ignored him. He held forth the vial.

"Take this," L'laylon continued. "The Dream King awaits you. He is growing in power in this Wold. But you may yet defeat him in the Dream Wold, where his essence has been ... diminished. Partake, and you will see what I mean."

The elf looked at each of the adventurers, but his pale blue eyes registered no emotion. The vial was held forward in his hand.

"Whatever we do, perhaps we should set about sealing up these holes the remorhaz left. We don't need anymore...things...taking us by surprise."

"You wouldn't happen to have any big rocks or such that we might use, would you?" he asks of Clu'eth, motioning with his hands that he meant big!

Vauhwyt and Mookie
Monday August 29th, 2005 4:42:40 PM

The liontaur is also suspicious about taking the strange potion.

"If you don't mind me asking," she says, "why didn't you mention this beforre? Where did you get this magic from? And as an elf, what's your opinion of the Fey King?"

Mookie is more blunt. "Anybody got a detect poison spell?"

Vauhwyt does not tell her familiar to hush.

Rose
Monday August 29th, 2005 8:45:08 PM

Rose waits patiently for the others to get more weapons. "Vorelle, I have some extra arrows, but their not enchanted or anything."

ooc: I dont think anybody sold the stuff in the catacombs. When is the last time we got exp? I think we got it for the baker's house, but did we get any for the swamp, or the gnome village? I know we havent got any for the pumpkin fight or this temple fight. Um, dm Kup you do know what's been happening dont you? because we were sent to the swamp to get the book for the prince and gave it to the dragons instead. He doesnt know yet because we've been helping the temple.

Truth and Consequences (DM Kup)
Tuesday August 30th, 2005 12:43:22 AM

If L'laylon was expected to offer more answers, his response might have been a bit of a disappointment. "I am elf-kind, I was in the dreaming," he replied. "I know the King. Like others, I cast a vote. But a new vote must be held, and a new fate woven. That fate is not of my making, or of my kind." He looked meaningfully again at all of the adventurers.

Clu'eth stepped forward. "Brother L'laylon," he said more gently. "There are those that have questioned your motives in this Temple, and yet you fought with us. This--thing--you offer is outside of Wardd's realm. Can you not vouchsafe these heroes' passage?"

L'laylon turned to Clu'eth and nodded. "I understand, Master, and I realize the consequence of my actions. I will soon be leaving Wardd's service. But there is no malice in this vial. The Dream King awakens, his seeds are spreading in the Wold, and it is only in the seat of the Dreaming that these heroes may find the answers that they seek--the location of the serum that will save or doom this City. The passage to the Dreaming holds no danger other than what each brings there." For what it's worth, none of you sense deception in the elf's words--what sense can be made of them.

Clu'eth directed another novice to run to the armory. "Go and find what supplies these heroes might need," he instructed, and the novice ran off. H e turned to the group. "It is a small token of gratitude. You may not have yet saved the antidote, but you were able to save all of the civilians in this Temple--and what greater gift is there, that they yet live? You will find supplies to restock what ammunition you may have used--you may take it with Wardd's blessing, to whatever end."

"And one thing more," the priest continued. "Wardd has clearly blessed your struggle. I would offer you one more boon on his behalf." As the novice returned with supplies of arrows as the group might have wanted, there were also a small bag of amulets. "These are the Tokens of Wardd. They may be used once, and only by those to whom Wardd has bestowed his blessing. They will permanently enchant one weapon of your choosing. Take them, and experience Wardd's Fortune--wherever your destiny may lie." The priest looked back warily at L'laylon, who stood by impassively with the vial still outstretched.

The armory, indeed, has such resupply of ammunition as the group might desire. Consider yourselves at full ammo. There are mundane simple weapons of all kinds as well, should anyone desire them.

The Amulets of Wardd bestow a special blessing on one weapon of your choosing--the blessing is particular to each of you, and may not be transferred. Once used, the amulet disappears. Each round that you use the weapon in combat, roll a d4: 4 = the weapon functions as an additional +2 enchanted weapon that round; 3 = the weapon functions as an additional +1 enchanted weapon that round; 2 = the weapon functions as normal that round; 1 = the weapon functions at -1 less enchantment (i.e., cursed) weapon that round.

*ooc did you mean 3 = +1 instead of +2?*

DM Kup: Ooops! Yes, 3 = +1. I've corrected the post above.

While I'm here, I wanted to hand out some HERO POINTS. Olyn and Dietrich both receive a hero point for absolutely (and I mean absolutely) insane bravery in the face of overwhelming odds against the remorhazes. And Rose receives a hero point for solid roleplay in a difficult circumstance! Congratulations, everyone!

having gathered his gear and restocked his crossbow bolts, completely donning his armor and making sure everyone has been fully healed. Olyn will graciously accept the token from Clu'eth.
turning to L'laylon he says, im sorry I doubted your words brother, and I am sorry to see you leave his service.
and takes the vial from his outstretched hand.

*Olyn will attune the amulet to his MW Light Crossbow before he enters the dream world*

Vorelle
Tuesday August 30th, 2005 10:53:48 AM

Vorelle accepts her amulet solemnly. After a moment's thought, she places it on the handaxe sheathed at her right side, watching in wonder as the amulet disappears.

Then she fills her quiver from the armory and stands ready to drink her share of the liquid.

Dietrich
Tuesday August 30th, 2005 3:27:44 PM

Dietrich takes a great-sword and arrows from the armoury and gladly accepts the divine token, remembering again the amazing experience of Rose's brother returning after death to help against the feys. He puts the amulett at the newly acquired sword. He weighs the weapon and trys to get a feeling of it.

Despite beeing unable to read L'aylon's intentions, in the end Dietrich slightly grudgingly accepts the idea of taking the potion and entering the dreamworld.

OOC: still about that loot, what are we going to do about it? I would just like to have it behind us and update the charactersheet.

DM Kup: Totally OOC--I expect a resolution to the DFR module--finally!--within a few more weeks. PCs (that survive) will have downtime then. Sale of goods, updates to CS's, etc., might best happen then. Okay? : )

Berlon - HP 25/28
Tuesday August 30th, 2005 7:04:43 PM

Berlon has to have the amulet placed into his hand, and he accepts it with a blank stare and open mouth. He snaps out of it at the actions of the others.

"Are you people CRAZY?" He jumps up and down after his question for added effect. "You're doing it AGAIN! GAAAH!"

He turns towards L'laylon and politely says "Yes, thank you, I will pass," and then wanders off towards the wrecked alchemist area, muttering angrily in Gnomish.

He will then check on the condition of the area, seeing what is in workable condition.

"If you don't mind..." Theodore extends his hand to take the potion from L'laylon. "I would like to look this over."

If given the potion, Theodore will cast detect magic on it to determine what he can. (Spellcraft 15)

Olyn
Tuesday August 30th, 2005 10:21:11 PM

* 2nd post cuz i think it needs to be said *

are you people crazy? if Clu'eth thinks its ok then its ok. we dont have time to bicker, to wander off cussing, and to cast spells to check on things. we need to find out where the potion is, how to get it back and in the process find out his plans and see how we can keep being a thorn in his side. now, quit thinking about yourselves and remember there are things we have to do now to save them.
(waves his hands at all the people in the temple)
then walking over to an empty cot, Olyn lays down, pops the top of his potion, and downs it.

Vauhwyt and Mookie
Tuesday August 30th, 2005 10:38:16 PM

Vauhwyt accepts the token with thanks but does not use it just yet. In fact, she accepts it in a handkerchief and does not actually touch it yet.

Let it sit in a pocket for now, she thinks, until the folks at church say it is okay for me to use.

She is reluctant to trust the potion as well, but Olyn's bravery shames her. "I agree, Berlon, but what other choice do we have that presents even a chance of saving our city?"

She takes a sip of the potion.

"Here, Mookie."

"Boss, maybe I better stay here and watch over you all?"

"And what could you do if we were attacked?" Vauhwyt counters.

"Um ... uh ... um ..."

"Here, take a sip!"

"Fine." But if this kills me, I'm blaming you."

"Hush, Mookie."

The Flagon with the Dragon (DM Kup)
Tuesday August 30th, 2005 11:08:16 PM

Several -- Vorelle, Olyn, Dietrich, and Vauhwyt -- stood ready to drink. Theodore sniffed and examined the potion, but his examination revealed little (identify potion is higher than 15, sorry), although it unquestionably was of a strong enchantment.

L'laylon provided a small drop of tincture to each who were ready to receive it. He laid a hand gently on Dietrich's new blade and lowered it. "You'll have no use for such things in the Dreaming," he smiled. "But then, I can see that there is no use in explaining. Go--relax your mind, empty your thoughts, and become one with the void. Remember--the only danger there is what you bring with you."

Berlon dismissed the others disparagingly and headed toward the alchemists' lab. Or, at least, what was left of it; it was a wreck. Nothing remained intact; the pixies and the clumsy defense of the Temple's protectors had seen to that. Not far from the doors to the lab, Berlon saw a young gnomish family. The mother was cradling her young child's head in her lap and was weeping. "Hold on, child, hold on," she urged him, stroking his feverish brow. "Don't give in. We'll have medicine for you soon."

"But, mother, where will we get it?" asked her older daughter. "The antidote is gone. No one will be able to cure him--"

"Hush, girl," her mother chided. "There is always hope. There is always a way." For a moment, her eyes looked up and met Berlon's, and she smiled faintly. "Isn't that what these brave protectors have shown us? There's always hope--isn't there?"

One line forming to the left, please--let me know if you drink the potion or no. There's enough folks missing posts--maybe it's the nasty weather in the Southeast--that we'll wait for tomorrow before proceeding further on the results of the potion and other matters.

Vorelle
Wednesday August 31st, 2005 2:04:09 AM

Vorelle frowns at the priest's words. Weapons supposedly weren't needed Below, either, but she'd had experience to the contrary. She takes a firmer grip on her quiver. Needed or not, her weapons are coming with her.

She accepts a sip from the vial.

Rose
Wednesday August 31st, 2005 4:02:59 AM

ooc: sorry for missing posts. My sis is moving and although she said she would keep her kids at home because she missed them (we had them for a whole week while she looked for an apartment) guess who has the kids? :) oh well I dont mind as their moving 6hrs away. But whenever I would sit down to post someone needed the phn or i had to watch them. Right now they're sleeping at our house and will be picked up in the morning and leave for their new home. :(

Rose will put the amulet in her beltpouch, she wants a magic bow, but she really had her heart set on a nice one made of white, black, and rose wood. If she needs it she'll use it, if not she'll wait untill she gets a pretty bow. She makes sure that she's beside Vauhwyt when she lays down and takes the potion (where's piper? anyone know?)

ooc: does the amulet have to be used on a masterwork weapon? what happens if it's used on a weapon that's already magic? can we upgrade it? I assume it just adds a +1 bonus and the special d4 feature right?

DM Kup: the expert (clearly, excluding me) explanation of the amulet/token is that it endows any single, non-natural weapon with a "(d4-2) luck bonus," i.e., it will stack with enchantment bonuses. The bonus applies to the weapon, but it is particular to the PC, i.e., the bonus will not convey to other wielders of the weapon nor can the PC reassign it to another weapon.

Theodore and Macaw
Wednesday August 31st, 2005 9:33:58 AM

Theodore purses his lips as he thinks deeply on what he is about to do.

I don't know enough about this dream world...the Fey King...any of it. What am I going to do?

He watches as several of his friends take sips from the potion. He also takes note of Berlon's hasty retreat.

He continues to drift further from the group. But perhaps he has the right idea this time.

He shakes his head fiercely. "I can't let you go without me. I may not be of much help, but I can't let you go without me."

His mind made up, he takes a drink of the potion.

Olyn

(OOC sorry been struggling with keeping my internet connection longer than 30 secs for the last few days. Catching up on everything at once. Tell me if I got the right of this, the amulet effect isn't permanent, if I roll a 1 it only lasts until the next round, ok nm I see you cleared that up.)

Standing there leaning slightly on his bow, the young ranger once again stands there not fully understanding everything being discussed.

he accepts the amulet, though not quite undestanding it's powers but does understand that when he makes the choice it is permanent, and quickly replenishes his stock of arrows.

When offered the potion he smiles weakly,(Still not 100% over the illness) and asks,"Like anyone really had to ask." Quaffing the offered elixir.

Berlon - HP 25/28
Wednesday August 31st, 2005 10:07:20 PM

Berlon smiles at the girl as he attends the brother. "Always, little one, always." He will then cast Cure Minor Wounds on the boy, hoping any little bit helps.

"After this, if you and your family want, you can move out of the City and live in the village I grew up in. Once this is all over..."

Cure Minor Wounds - cures 1 hp, cast spontaneously in place of Guidance
