Fire in the Market

DM Kelly
Thursday September 1st, 2005 6:01:00 PM

The old priest blows out the lamp, so that only a few candles illuminate the small room.

"I am Gregory. I do not know any more of the tapestry. The sphere does seem to hold power, I also wonder about it. Take great care"

After Kendry's warning:
"So, the priests of Marteaus know something of this. Be extra careful then, they seem to have their own agenda.

The only rear exits are through the private quarters, where others are not allowed. I am afraid someone would raise an alarm if they saw you there. The front door should be fine, the guards keep the city in order."

Gregory then opens the door and you walk through the Temple of Death to the main entrance. As you do so, you hear a tremendous commotion outside. People are screaming and several run into the temple, yelling

Fire, the market is on fire!

As you exit the temple, you see that the market is indeed on fire. It is centered on Tueful's booth, and several nearby booths are starting to burn. Tueful jumps out of his booth, his clothes and hair burning. A quick thinking vendor grabs a blanket and throws it around Tueful, smothering the flames.

Wilfire, Bralin and Peerimus are near the booth, apparently checking something when the booth suddenly caught fire.

City guards are running to the scene, and people are using blankets and buckets in an effort to extinguish the fire.

Kendry  d20+6=24 d20+12=17
Thursday September 1st, 2005 9:19:03 PM

"That sounds like a good idea, Airin," Kendry responds to the druid's suggestion.

"Thank you then, Gregory. I am Kendry. Again - alert your clerics and guards to set a defense."

Once outside he notes the uproar. "Turkeyfeathers! Where is Wilf, anyhow? I asked him to keep an eye on Tueful's and Carela's booths," the halfling says.

He looks to see whether any followers of Marteaus or their thugs are taking advantage of the confusion to enter the Temple [Spot: 24]. If he does see one or more of them, he tosses a tanglefoot bag (ranged touch attack, AC 17) at whatever Red Eye or Red Eye thug is in the lead. "Keep the followers of Marteaus out! They are evildoers!" he shouts. If he recognizes none other than general citizens entering, he leaves those who enter alone, and...

If he can discern no Red Eyes or their direct associates trying to enter the Temple: Kendry reaches under the neck of his shirt [activating longstrider], hightails it over toward the burning booths (running at 120'), and then performs cure light wounds on Tueful, knowing that the flames had to have hurt him. "Who did this to you, sir?" After that, he does what he can to help extinguish the flames, first emptying his waterskin onto a cloth or canvas which is not burning, and next using that to try to smother the flames. If he sees Wilfire or any who look like they are with the dwarf (he had earlier overheard Wilfire's side of his conversation with Peerimus and Bralin), he asks, "Did you see what or who caused this?"

Podo  d20+2=14
Thursday September 1st, 2005 10:05:59 PM

Podo upon exiting the temple and seeing the fire, runs at full clip to the Tueful book stand where the fire is, reaches into his pouch and pulls out a glass vial with a pellet inside. Looking up to the sky, asks Domi for guidance. He takes the pellet out of the vial and smashes the pellet to the ground (to hit= 14). Hopefully this will quench the fire and he won't be swept away buy the great flood! [The marble sized pellet is an application of dust of dryness containing 100 gallons of water. If this pellet is hurled down, it breaks and releases the same volume of water]

Once the fire is out or nearly out, Podo will check for survivors. He will tend to the sick or those in need of help.

Gilan  d20+8=9
Thursday September 1st, 2005 10:23:00 PM

Gilan is quick to leave with the others..in fact he will most likely be the first out the door or near it. He takes in the scene before him with an audible growl. He does look to make sure that Carela's new booth is ok.

He tries to take note of the crowd and look for any that maybe watching with more interest than just curiousity. Maybe he will get lucky and spot the ones that did this, but he is totally overwhelmed by the smoke and noise that is about him.

Wilfire Ironhouse  d20+4=22
Thursday September 1st, 2005 10:48:36 PM

"By jove!" Wilfire shouted when he noticed the fire, and instantly he began looking through the crowd for any signs of danger (OOC- 22 spot- the fire could be a diversion. Wilfire will look for a secondary "incident" as well as a potential suspect).

OOC- Sorry about my terrible posting record thus far. Don't loose faith in me yet... please!

Nezamil
Thursday September 1st, 2005 11:01:58 PM

The dwarf trails the rest of the gang outside but as he survey's the market place he nods knowingly

" i know just the thing " mumbles Nezamil .....he touches his anvil holy symbol causing it to glow slightly " water of Domi to quench the fire's thirst " prays the Cleric (casting create water, 18 gallons of water) centering the fall of water on Teufuls booth

" lets make sure we douse tthe entire fire don't want it to spread here in the market " adds Nezamil as he repeats his prayer casting create water a 2nd time centered this time on the nearby booths

" thank you Domi " prays the dwarf aloud as he watches the water cascade down on the targeted vendors booths

Patterton  d20=13
Friday September 2nd, 2005 2:41:16 AM

Patty follows the others outside and halts in midstride at the sight of the flames. He looks around for some source of water(spot 13) to help put the flames out and a suitable bucket.

"Gods! Got to stop this thing before it spreads to the whole square!"

Airin  d20+10=20 d20+25=41 d20+10=28
Friday September 2nd, 2005 4:33:21 AM

Airin quickly follows the others outside and is very pleased to be out in the open again. The fresh air makes her feel a lot better.

The others appear to have things well under control concerning the fire so Airin chooses to blend in the crowd keeping an eye out for those Red Eyes.

While she mingles among the crows her eyes quickly look up to the sky hoping to see Erwen making wide laizy circles over the market square. Maybe she saw something ... she has to make sure to talk to Erwen later.

[spot 31] Peerimus keeps his eye on the man who placed the package and slides through the panicking crowd after him. The others can deal with the fire Peerimus plans to see the man does not escape. Shaylin stays easily with him and if a clear line of sight is established, Peerimus gives the cat the attack command.

If so the leopard bursts forward in a charge attack. [Speed 40 Pounce full attack + rake during charge. Claw 31/29 Bite 19 Rake 20/30 Dmg 3/4 Bite 6 Rake 5/4 total=22]

Friday September 2nd, 2005 4:45:09 PM

As you exit the temple, you quickly go into action. Wilfire and Bralin are already near the fire and Tueful.

Podo and Nezamil quickly bring about magical water that drenches Tueful's booth, putting the fire almost completely out. Patty runs for a bucket, trying to put out the smoldering remnants of the fire.

Gilan checks first on what is most precious to him, Corela. She is still at the fruit booth that she recently purchased, with a look of terror in her eyes.

Airin also checks on what is precious, and sees Erwen flying in high circles above the square.

Peerimus is more interested in the priest of Marteaus that he saw at the back of the booth. Trying to sneak off through the crowd, he is quickly overtaken by the leopard. Shaylin leaps upon him striking him both front claws, but is unable to latch on with a bite. (7 HP damage, Priest AC 25). The priest spins and swings his mace at the cat, hitting it squarely. (9 HP damage). He yells out:

"Guards, help!"

Seeing a leopard attacking one of the citizens, a guard comes over, making ready to attack the wild animal. He closes on them during this round, and will be close enough to attack next round.

Meanwhile, ever trying to be kind and helpful, Kendry cures the burns on Tueful. He then asks Tueful:

"Who did this to you, sir?"

Tueful looks around, and his eyes come to rest on Wilfire and Bralin.

"They are the only ones near my booth when the fire broke out. They must have set it."

The guard nearest to Tueful looks at them and draws his sword.

"I'm afraid you are under arrest."

The other two guards are approaching.

"Propinquity is not necessarily a sure sign of guilt. I know this dwarf," Kendry indicates Wilfire, "And know he would never do such a thing." Although he would not mind vouching for Bralin - he does not know him. "Do you have a clue how this came to pass?" he asks Wilfire.

And he turns to Tueful. "What is the last thing you remember just before the fire started? What were you doing? Were you talking with anyone? Where did the fire start? If you were looking at these dwarfs - how could they be the ones who started it? Were you looking behind you at the same time? Is it not more likely that someone out of your line of sight would be a more likely candidate?"

He hears a call for guards at some distance. [Spot: 19] He notices the clothing of the Red Eye calling out for help.

"I'd wager that the fellow with the Red Eye on his tunic may know something about this. He and his cohorts got done threatening us not half an hour ago. That big cat there just might be on the side of the law, sirs. You have the means to detect lies? For I'm sure the Red Eye'll be good at spewing them forth."

Gilan  d20+2=18
Friday September 2nd, 2005 11:33:03 PM

Gilan, thanks to Kendry pointing it out, races in the direction of the large cat. His eyes take in the scene before him and the other druid that is already near there. His voice a growl he yells to the guards. "Sheath those weapons...I am a druid and can easily talk to the cat...no need to kill it yet." His eyes search the other druid giving him a nod of understanding as he had left his own companion in the woods.

If he must he will bull his way through(Strength Check 18) the guards to get in front of the large cat, even if it takes an extra round to get there.

Patterton  d20+2=19
Saturday September 3rd, 2005 7:38:45 AM

After Patty douses the bucket on what's left of the fire, he makes his way over to Kendry and the guards as their argument breaks out.

"Now see here," he says, quite put off by Tueful's insinuations, "you know right well that my companions and I didn't have a thing to do with this! Most of us were inside the Temple at the time and Wilfire here was simply on guard duty. The only thing he's guilty of is not seeing the real culprit before they set the blaze and you surely can't arrest him for that, sir." (diplomacy 19)

Bralin
Sunday September 4th, 2005 10:29:12 AM

Bralin shifts his traveling cloak slightly so that the blue triangle of the Woldian League of Adventurers in plain for all to see. The dwarf has found the emblem useful in the past.

He makes no move.

"I am Bralin Stoneminder of the Woldian League. Yon druid and his animal companion saw a follower of Marteaus place a box 'neath this man's pavilion. We came to investigate."

That they were too late is obvious and therefore unstated.

Podo
Sunday September 4th, 2005 4:34:11 PM

Podo runs at a full clip to even the odds with the guards, the red eye and the leopard/group.

Once there, Podo will try to inquire what transpired and if the red eye provoked the animal.

Patterton  d20+2=14 d20+2=7
Sunday September 4th, 2005 5:35:44 PM

Suprised at Bralin's revelation,Patty tosses back his robe a bit to display his own WLA badge of the Journeyman rank. He then gestures to Kendry, Airin and Podo. "We too are members of the League. Surely you don't believe that any that in our company would be guilty of such an act of terrorism? Those priests of Marteaus threatened us as we entered the church. They must be round here somewhere...(spot =7)" (diplomacy =14)

Peerimus and Shaylin  d20+17=32
Sunday September 4th, 2005 9:40:12 PM

Seeing the guard and knowing what a mess is about to ensue he calls out, "Hold your weapon, the cat is mine and was helping apprehend the crimminal that stared the fire!"

Peerimus closes to be in a position to not only obstruct the guard from attacking Shayln, but also to hopefully stop the priest of Marteaus from being able to slink away unseen. Peeimus will also give a whistle Phweeet! "Shaylin Enough I think"

Out of the corner of his eye he picks up on who mentioned 'not killing the cat...yet' and the blood starting to surge is put down easily enough and Peerimus tilts his staff to acknowledge his brother Gilan.

Monday September 5th, 2005 12:50:28 AM

The dwarf hustles up to Teufuls booth and calmly observes the happenings stepping next to his fellow dwarves and Patterton as he see's the guards drawn sword "By Domi please sheath your sword brave sir" addresses Nezamil to the guard (d20+12=32 diplomacy ch)" i was the one to summon the water to quench the fire" as the dwarf touches his anvil holy symbol for the guard to see "my friends had nothing to do with the setting of this fire " adds the dwarf as he ponts to the 2 dwarves "Teuful here is just trying to blame the first person he see's hoping to get a quick compensation for any damage to his booth...just ask his nearby vendors "

Nezamil calmly stands with his fellow band members supporting them with nods of agreement as they voice their claims of support and innoccents for the 2 dwarves and big cat

Airin continues to observe the scene from among the crowd. She keeps an eye out for more Red-Eyes to show. She's no good in disputes like this. Better keep an eye out from a distance ...

Should things get out of hands, she will take her crossbow from her back.

"Well. Dis toothy fella," Wilfire indicates Tueful to the guard, "done sold our halfling what we ast. Gots no quarrel wit 'im, so fer. But I might if'n he sticks to dis here, fanciful ideer. Calls it leapin' to da wrong conclusion, dat's what I calls it." Wilfire does not seem bothered in the least by the guard waving a sword in his general direction. DM Kelly
Monday September 5th, 2005 12:26:15 PM

The guard stands next to the smoldering Tueful, looking back and forth as the group gathers. Two of his fellow guards show up quickly, swords drawn.

"Captain, what has happened?"

The Captain replies:

"Someone has set fire to this good man's business. The only persons nearby where these two dwarves." (pointing to Wilfire and Bralin)

The familiar chorus of innocence and wrongful accusations wash over the Captain like a summer shower.

"I been patrolling this city for 15 years, and not once have the guilty come forward and confessed. Not even when an eyewitness comes forward. I'm afraid we will need to go to headquarters where the truth can be made plain."

Looking at Kendry he adds: "Big words can hide small lies. I am looking for the simple truth."

When Bralin and later Patty show their membership in the Woldian League of Adventurers, the Captain looks impressed.

"Your oath is to obey the law, I can only hope that you are indeed innocent."

Tueful lays upon the ground, his face a swirl of confusion.

"These men (gesturing at those who came from the temple) I have no problem with. They are good and kind. I do not know these dwarves though, and I do not lie when I say they were the only ones at the booth when the fire broke out. How else did the fire start if they did not set it?"

Looking around, the Captain says:

"I need these two dwarves to come with me. If the rest of you want to follow along to bear witness you may. Do not draw weapons, or your actions will be judged harshly."

The Captain then leads you over to the guard who came to the rescue of the priest attacked by a leopard. Looking at the guard, he says:

"What is going on here?"

"Captain sir, this here priest was walking through the market when he was attacked by this leopard. I was about to kill the beast, when these two druids come up and calm it down. Say it is their friend, and was actually apprehending an arsonist. Anyways, they calmed it down so I didn't kill it. The priest here wants to press charges against the owner. He was hurt pretty bad, almost killed. Fact is, he says these dwarves you have here are the ones who started the fire. Not sure how this Halfling is involved (looking at Podo), but he seems mighty interested none the less."

The Captain looks at the group and the priest of Marteaus:

"The truth is here and I will find it. Keep you weapons sheathed or you will be judged guilty. Come with me to the station."

Airin blends with the crowd, and follows from a distance. You do not see anyone else with a Red Eye on his robe.

Bralin  d20+7=17
Monday September 5th, 2005 4:06:09 PM

Further words are pointless.

Bralin spends several long moments staring pointedly at the priest of Marteaus. He doesn't say a word, but his thoughts are plain enough.
[Initimidate 17]

Still silent, the dwarf follows the Captain.

Podo
Monday September 5th, 2005 8:16:32 PM

Podo reveals his membership pin in the WLA now that it appears safe to do so. He will silently follow the druids to whatever court they appear to be headed to, since the captain of the guard stated those interested can bear witness for their friends.

Gilan
Monday September 5th, 2005 9:23:37 PM

Gilan looks to the other druid and they silently seem to come to an understanding. He had no intentions of hurting the cat in any case...it had been meant to give the guards pause. The low growl in his throat is all the more he does though his eyes narrow at the priest. With a smile and speaking in druid he addresses the priest though he will not understand. "Beware unclean one...I will remember your scent." He turns to the captain of this towns guard and shakes his head.

Switching back to common he gives the captain a smile that reveals slightly pointed teeth. "I have your word to not touch the cat?" Despite the need that is present in this town he will not let the animal be harmed.

Peerimus and Shaylin
Monday September 5th, 2005 9:51:00 PM

Peerimus does not feel the need to correct the guard but makes a kissing noise and Shaylin vaults atop the humans rather broad shoulders. Piercing yellow green eyes stare at the blodied priest as the cat settles to a comfortable spot.

Peerimus addresses the captain, "He is lying, his package started the fire while his friend distracted the owner, it was all done quite sloppily. Shaylin was merely slowing him down during his escape." A hand rubs the purring cats head and ear. "As long as the lying one is brought as well, I have no issue about accompanying you captain."

When his brother speaks, Peerimus adds in common with a dangerous smile towards the preist, "Nor will Shaylin."

Shaylin remains draped across Peerimus's shoulders as he follows the guard to wherever they wish to take him.

(Peerimus has a staff and if asked will turn it over, but it is always 'out' so to speak.

Kendry
Monday September 5th, 2005 9:57:03 PM

Kendry agrees to accompany the captain, on the condition that Peerimus lays down.

Nezamil
Tuesday September 6th, 2005 12:30:56 AM

Nezamil joins the 2 dwarves walking in step by their sides....... hands empty

With a sidelong look at the black armored dwarf " he's with Wilfire hopefully he is joining us in this quest " muses Nezamil as Bralin silently follows the captain " he's all business ....definitly battle tested by the looks of him "

During the walk to the station Nezamil ponders how the events unfolded in the market square as suddenly a thought pops in his head as his eyes settle on the two druids and the big cat then a quick glance at the red robed priest.... a grin spreads across his face ......waiting till they reach the station house entrance " uh excuse me captain if i may mention something that might help you.....both the red robed priest and big cat are wounded ....perhaps if you matched up the priest weapon to the cats wound and the priests wound to the cats claws you could recreate how they were struck ....i mean obviously the priests clothes are ripped from behind as surely are his wounds....sorta suggests that he was running away from the fire " shrugs the dwarf " instead walking thru as he states "

Wilfire Ironhouse  d20+11=20
Tuesday September 6th, 2005 12:42:43 AM

Wilfire offers no resistance.

"Nothin did I have ta do wit dis fire. Ya have me word on dat as a dwarf and priest. But I'll be goin wit yue, cause dat's jus deh kinda' law abidin' fella dat I am."

Airin and Erwen
Tuesday September 6th, 2005 2:58:05 AM

In a way Airin has trouble to hide the smile on her face. That's what happens when you stick your noses in things that aren't yours to mess with :-)

we're loosing precious time here ! Too bad that message spell has ended, and Airin can't cast things like that.

She can do little else that follow the rest from a distance. She undoes her black robe from the temple and staches it away in her backpack. She takes a bread crumbes she has left from before and gives a short whistle to Erwen. Hopefully the eagle will fly down and eat some. Once she's back on Airin's arm the druid will try to comfort Erwen again telling her she will never take the bird into Gargul's temple again.

Pattterton  d20+2=8

Patty turns a deep shade of red and clenches his fist a few times before regaining control. "Fine, fine, fine." he mutters,"Let's just get this over with. We have a schedule to keep but, I'm sure our friends will be found innocent." He follows the gaurd and keeps an eye on the crowd for anyone who looks suspicious.(spot 8)

DM Kelly
Tuesday September 6th, 2005 5:22:36 PM

You walk to the guard station, surrounded by four guards. Fierce looks and muttered vows give the priest of Marteaus cause for concern, though he does not show it.

The priest, still bleeding from the jaguar wounds says in response to Nezamil:

"Tis true the cat attacked me from behind, but the truth is I was walking towards the temple when I saw these two dwarves set fire to the vendor's booth. I was about to raise an alarm when this one (pointing to Peerimus) set his cat at me. I turned to run but the creature easily overtook me. Creatures such as that should be killed if brought into the city, and I plan on pressing charges and seeing that it happens."

Soon you arrive at the guard station, which was about a block away. Small guard stations such as these are set up all over the city, and typically house a few guards.

You enter a large room, with a few tables and chairs set about. There are four cells on one end, and one of them is occupied by what you assume is a thief.

The Captain says:

"We are in luck today, the investigator is here visiting. He can detect lies, so the truth will be easy to find. No use keeping the innocent waiting about for trial."

With that, the priest of Marteaus looks pale, and says:

"I have lost much blood. Let me heal my wounds before we continue."

He reaches into his belt pouch and comes out with a small forked metal rod, which he immediately strikes. There is a distortion of the air and he is immediately gone. No trace of him remains.

The Captain lets out a string of cuss words, not often heard in the Wold.

"Well, I guess we now have a clear idea of who was lying. The priests of Marteaus have some explaining to do. I am sorry that you were falsely accused. I was fairly certain that members of the WLA would not be involved in such a thing, but we do have procedure to follow. You are free to go."

OOC: Just realized that I am gone Thursday - Sunday. Not sure if I can find a substitute or just put the game on haitus. I'll let you know tomorrow.

Kendry
Tuesday September 6th, 2005 7:48:20 PM

"Captain - I have a real concern for the temple of Gargul," Kendry says. "Would it be possible for you to set a guard or two near the entrance? Or at least to keep an eye on things for today? Some of the priests of Marteaus have been standing before the entrance, and threatening people. They tried to cow us not 45 minutes ago. We had to pass through their their midst - the priests and some of their warriors - just to enter the building. With their words and actions it was evident they were trying to provoke a response. Thank you again, Captain, to you and your men, for helping to keep peace and order in the city."

Once outside the station, Kendry, waiting until a wee bit away from the building, suggests to his companions, "Shall I again cast the message spell?" he asks them. He takes a moment to explain the nature of the spell to newcomers Bralin and Peerimus - that it allows for whispered conversation among the party within about a 200' distance of each other.

"What say we double check the the Temple of Gargul, make sure that the Red Eyes have not caused a disturbance there, then, per Airin's suggestion, head on over to the Temple of Light?" If this seems agreeable, then the halfling walks to Gargul's temple, and takes a peek inside. If all is well, then on to Alemi's temple.

Podo
Tuesday September 6th, 2005 11:26:23 PM

Podo nods his agreement ot Kendry about his message spell. Podo trying to be supportive will second the motion if anyone calls for a vote on what to do next. He also has some concerns for what might befall the dear lady Corela, and maybe her new business.

"Those supposed priest are plain antagonists! I say we see if they are up to no good and get the Captain here on their trail before its too late!" says Podo to the group.

Gilan
Tuesday September 6th, 2005 11:53:18 PM

Gilan just grunts as the priest makes his escape and shakes his head. With a sneering smile he laughs lightly. "Maybe that priest would appreciate a hunt." It is more a statement than a question as he nods to the captain and then takes his leave.

Once outside he stretches and shakes himself as if to be rid of the uncleanliness. "I have a friend to get before we go anywhere...though I am loathe to being him into this city." His eyes take in the place and he growls lightly and mutters under his breathe. "Better to be done to the wilds than this acursed place...the road is safer." He will not be above getting the message spell cast upon him but he will find an area as close to the gates as possible before he will join anyone at the Alemi temple.

Airin and Erwen
Wednesday September 7th, 2005 9:14:54 AM

Airin smiles as her friends leave the Guard Station. "Are you guys done playing now ? We've wasted enough time. Let's go to Alemi's temple."

Wilfire Ironhouse
Wednesday September 7th, 2005 9:19:30 AM

"'pology accepted" are the only words Wilfire offers as he turns and begins walking towards the door.

Nezamil
Wednesday September 7th, 2005 2:44:25 PM

The dwarf arches an eyebrow as the red robed priest disappears " that explains alot"

"Keep up the vigilance " adds the dwarf to the Captain " as myself having grown up here in Plateau City its good to see the people are well looked after by you and your men "

" good point Kendry i concur "

As Nezamil makes his way outside " good to meet the two of you i'm Nezamil " as he offers his hand to both Bralin and Peerimus "your both welcome to join us if you like.....and of course the big cat too " grins Nezamil " we can chat along the way to Alemi's temple"

Nezamil takes of the black robe of Gargul and stows it in his backpack

Peerimus and Shaylin
Wednesday September 7th, 2005 5:18:34 PM

Peerimus will give the captain a nod and turn to follow the others to the Alemi temple. Over hearing Gilan, Peerimus merely nods a bit of agreement.
