DM George "House Keeping" Sunday August 28th, 2005 10:23:41 PM
The Crimson Shield's seem happy to see the other other adventurers leave. They seemed to be powerful allies but to set in their ways and to domineering to appeal to the Shields.
The settle in to wait for relief from the city guard but an hour passes by without any sign from them.
Happy, after taking an inventory, reports that they will only have enough fresh food supplies to last another day. After that he will still be able to make bread, and have some pickled and preserved goods but the fare will get boring quick. He is also concerned about fresh water. He has plenty of beer, wine and spirits but clean water will run low quickly. He looks at Belkior with an upraised eyebrow and asks, "I am assuming you can create food and water if necessary."
He also blushes and stammers, "We need to come up with a plan to deal with all these kids urine and poop. I doubt my privy cleaners will be coming anytime soon and things are gonna start backing up! You have a lot of kids down there!"
Please post if anyone is on watch, where they are watching from, and if we are on any rotating basis.
Lang & Sunshine Sunday August 28th, 2005 10:27:41 PM
Lang & Sunshine pretty much keep to themselves. If there is any physical activity Lang does his fair share, if not more.
He stands patiently while Belkior examines him, even though he knows he is quite healthy. He kneels down as he now towers over the Halfling by quite a lot.
Lang & Sunshine (cont.) Sunday August 28th, 2005 10:37:22 PM
Lang spends most of his time by the front door making sure the barricade is kept secure.
He makes a few small openings in the boarded windows, on either side of the doorway, so that he can spy out onto the street.
If possible Lang will make other small openings in the boarded up windows on other sides of the Giggling Ghost (on the same level).
Also during this time he practices his skills and abilities, trying to become used to his new body.
Xenia Sunday August 28th, 2005 11:15:58 PM
"Ya wanna remove stains ... " Xenia fishes around in her haversack. "Here." The rogue holds out a stick. "The spell's called Prestigiditation. I bought this to practice with. I'd probably just waste the thing now, but Wynn can use it. Or Angus. It cleans stuff. Does other stuff too."
She hands Belkior the wand. "I just don't wanna see you be licking your legs with your tongue."
It's kind of a funny thing to say. But the rogue doesn't feel in a very funny mood. Oh, her ears perk up a bit when Tionel begins to describe the make up and earrings. Gets her mind thinking.
"Thanks," she says, hugging the elf a little bit. "Maybe, if we're all still here ... if anything's still here when this is all over, I'll look up you Tin-sheenee-butt. Maybe get sump'in ... sump'in nice."
Wynn's song drifts up the stairs. It sounds so sad to her ears.
She drifts slowly down the stairs and peeks around the corner. Just watching for a bit.
"Hey!" she says, pulling a smile up from a box of spares kept just for this sorta thing. "Wanna help me take care of the upstairs?" she calls out to the bard. "Gotta watch the street. That and board up some of the windows."
"Could be kinda lonely up there. Sure be nice to have a handsome guy around. I'd try the hammer and nails myself, but I can't figure out how to put the nails into the hammer."
Belkior Monday August 29th, 2005 8:29:40 AM
The halfling cleric looks back and forth at the suggestions from his companions. "I .. uh ... was looking for ways to keep my legs clean. I was thinking more of combs and brushes, but a spell would work, too."
When Happy mentions magically created food and drink, Belkior nods enthusiastically. "Yes, yes ... I had planned on doing that. Do you have enough containers to hold water for everyone?"
Pausing to finger his chin, the halfling continues. "Exactly how many children are downstairs? I can make enough food and water for 18 people, would that be enough for all of us and the children?" Belkior includes Happy in his gesture.
Belkior shares Happy's concern about sanitation. "Most unhealthy, if we don't do something about that. Hmmm, what could we do? What did the refuse haulers do with it, before? I'm guessing that the urine went to the tanners, but the rest? Did that go into the lake?"
Belkior thinks for a bit before speaking to Happy. "Do you have any barrels or containers that you don't want to keep? Instead of using the building out behind the Ghost, we could use a barrel or something, you know, get soemone handy to put a seat on top of it. Then either one of the people who can cast fire spells can burn it, or we can simply roll the barrel out to the side street and let it roll downhill away from the Ghost."
Angus 24/25 HP d20+8=26 Monday August 29th, 2005 9:06:09 AM
Angus waits patiently for the guard and attempts to keep the kid entertained and out of trouble. Angus stays as far away from actual work as possible, getting as much rest as possible. (perfom 26)
Tionel Monday August 29th, 2005 12:13:13 PM
Poop duty...great. Tionel ponders changing shape to a form which has no sense of smell so that he can handle it. But try as he may, he can't think of any creatures that happen to be so and possess hands at the same time. Maybe the bugbear can do it, he thinks to himself. Then the halfling chirps in. "Great idea, Belkior! Get on it!" And Tionel leaves before the halfling can respond, thus having successfully shirked work. He whistles a happy tune as he gets some buckets and shovels and such for the poor halfling and whoever else (but himself) he can employ in that.
Wynn d20+6=20 d20+2=20 Monday August 29th, 2005 7:23:54 PM
Wynn finishes his song before heading upstairs in answer to Xenia's call.
And let no sleep bring false relief from the tension of the fray. Come wake the dead with the scream of life. Do battle with ghosts at play.
Gather your toys at the call-to-arms and swing your big bear down Upon our necks when we come to set you sleeping safe and sound.
It's as well we tell you no lie to chase the face that cries ~ And little birds can't fly so keep an open eye. Its as well we tell you no lie so I'll sing you no lullaby.
The bard gives a wane smile to the children before climbing the stairs. When he arrives he scouts the upper floors and scans the streets for activity from whatever vantages he can find. [Spot=20, Listen=20]
DM George Monday August 29th, 2005 10:19:48 PM
The group continues to clean up the area, including any bodies that still might be in the common room and in the bedrooms upstairs.
Lang is able to open up a small viewing area in one of the windows but only has a limited view of the street. He can't see up or down the street very well.
Xenia and Wynn, after he finishes his rather sad and depressing song, take watch upstair in the front left bedroom.
Tionel and Belkior go on waste and food patrol and have no problems finding some empty barrels for both the water and the waste disposal.
Some of the children, including Jella, who wants to see her Daddy, (35 survivors) climb up the stairs when they hear the coast is clear. One named Bill enters the common room and sees Lang in his new form and starts screaming. "The monsters are back! Help the monsters are back! Kill it! Don't let it get me!" He bolts down the stairs and jumps into Angus's arms quivering and moaning in fear.
Florin Jadenth Tuesday August 30th, 2005 12:27:03 AM
Florin nods and claps belkior on the shoulder as a thanks and then goes about helping with the GG stuff while thinking over plans or things that can be done.
When the kids come up he quickly moves over to take Jella's hand and then looks to the other kids, "Wait everyone." Florin glances back to Lang and smiles abit, trying to cheer him up abit, "Some of us have had some changes happen. You all remember Lang, our ranger friend?"
Florin kneels down to gently pick up Jella, "Lang was changed into a bugbear but he is still nice and the same decent Lang who would and has helped protect you."
Thinking Florin looks to Jella and whispers to her, "Jella, you remember Lang right? One of my friends and a very good friend to all of you also. Lang was changed like your daddy was and we need to help him fit in more. Will you help me with this?"
Florin smiles to Jella and whispers to her if she shows no fear of helping him out, "Ok, Lang is still as gentle as he always was, please come over with me and show the other kids that Lang is a good guy yet and won't hurt them, please?"
Belkior Tuesday August 30th, 2005 7:14:09 AM
The halfling cleric will go into the kitchen area with Happy. "Where would you like the food placed? And let's get those barrels placed."
Once the water barrels are in place, Belkior will look around for some chalk or similar marking implement. Then he writes, in large block letters, "WATER ONLY" on the barrels. "I really, really don't want to get the barrels mixed up."
After a moment of reflection and prayer, Belkior will petition Alemi for food and water for the group of children and adults sheltering in the Giggling Ghost. After invoking the spell a second time, both water barrels are full and there are two heaping mounds of food on the table.
Reaching out experimentally, the halfling tries a piece of the food. "Blehh ... no taste whatsoever. Maybe you can do something with it, Happy. Or maybe one of the spellcasters can flavour it."
After ensuring a food supply, Belkior will go to inspect the impromptu lavatory. It meets his expectations.
His sanitary inspection complete, Belkior will return to tending the wounds of the children. Seeing how Lang's appearance alarmed little Billy, Belkior will move to cover his legs. With everything else that has happened, he doesn't want any of the children to be afraid of their healer because of his altered legs.
Moving over to Florin, Belkior will whisper to the paladin. After motioning for the newly taller elf to bend down, of course. "Florin, the children are probably feeling cooped up down here in the basement. Do you think that it would be possible to take small groups of them upstairs for a change of scenery? Maybe even outside, if it's safe. Some of the older ones might like to help, either with Happy in the kitchen or moving broken furniture."
Angus 24./25 HP Tuesday August 30th, 2005 8:46:21 AM
Angus consoles Bill. "It is ok. Many of us were cursed in the last fight with an evil druid. Not a nice druid like Tionel our friend. Land was turned into a monster along with Florin, who is now an elf. You may also notice that your friend Wynn and Belkior have also been changed. Some of the rest of us were changed in ways that are not visible, but it hurt none the less. We are still here to take care of you and your friends. Everything will be fine."
Angus thinks to himself that the guard can not get here fast enough......
Xenia Tuesday August 30th, 2005 12:12:03 PM
Growing up Drow dark. Wishing you were not who you are. Normal. Just like the other kids.
Bow in her lap, Xenia sits by the window, next to Wynn. Her eyes move up and down the street. But her body, her body knows it is with him. Her body feels his body through the magnetic feel of attraction. So many thoughts and feelings. About him. About herself. Still, she says nothing. Giving him the gift of silence, while filling his void with her presence. Content to share what she knows through an osmotic communication born of her faith in his sensitivity and intuition.
Being there. It's what it's all about.
Lang & Sunshine d20+6=19 Tuesday August 30th, 2005 8:58:45 PM
Lang knows that he cannot help with the children accepting his new form. He must rely on his friends. Hopefully they will be able to make the children understand that he is a friend and not an enemy. That he is just Lang in a new form.
To make himself less imposing, Lang sits down on the floor near the front door. He leans against the wall and calls Sunshine to his side. Perhaps the older children will remember Sunshine and his master Lang and will understand that magic has changed him. If the older kids will come near him then possibly the younger ones will follow, Lang thinks.
He keeps an ear on any noises from outside (19/23).
Wynn d20+6=9 d20+2=15 Tuesday August 30th, 2005 9:25:12 PM
Wynn sits quietly next to Xenia and takes in the goings on around him. The children's fear of Lang weighs heavily on him. Will they fear him too? Or will they simply ridicule him?
The bard does his best to clear his mind of what troubles him. He looks over at Xenia as she looks out to the street and reminds himself that she has not abandoned him. When she returns his gaze he looks away, embarassed at his own weakness.
DM George Visitation Tuesday August 30th, 2005 9:45:02 PM
Jella looks at Angus and says, "That was Lang? He is all hairy." She climbs out of the mages lap and reclimbs the stairs. She tentatively makes her way over to the slumped ranger and stares at him with a puzzled frown on her tiny face. She hesitantly raises a hand and gently strokes a hairy arm. "uncle lang?" she queries in a small voice.
She looks deep into his eyes and recognition dawns. A huge smile crosses her face and she throws herself into the stunned ranger's arms. "Wow your the biggest teddy bear I have ever seen!" She squeezes the ranger and somehow the little girl seems to squeeze tears to the stoic ranger's eyes.
Meanwhile upstairs....
Xenia is to busy staring puppydog like at Wynn so misses it but Wynn notices the strange occurrance on the street. At first he hears it... a slow flapping sound but soon a wonderful apparation appears. It is a huge bird. Its wings are huge. They almost stretch across the entire road as the bird flies down the street. It lands in front of the Giggling Ghost. It's head is magestic, its feathers the color of fire. In fact it looks like the bird is on fire!
Xenia sees Wynn staring and her eyes follow his gaze down and her mouth drops open. It is beautiful.
Wynn murmurs under his breath, awe in his voice, "Phoenix"
Wynn hears in a voice in his head and sees the noble creature looking up at him, "My aren't you the smart one. Are you gonna open the door or do I need to kick it in?" Wynn recognizes that the creature is talking to him, but also hears the humor in his voice. Though the voice is only in his head.
Wynn d20+5=21 Wednesday August 31st, 2005 8:02:04 AM
"But your a myth, I mean I've heard tales and read stories, but..."
It takes a moment but the reality of the situation sinks in and Wynn calls down to the others.
"Shields, you aren't going to believe this, but there is a real Phoenix out in the street and it wants to come in! I think we should open the door. Every Phoenix I've ever heard told of has carried an important message [Bardic Knowledge = 21]"
Wynn grabs Xenia by the arm, "C'mon Xenia, this is amazing, I mean who ever gets to talk to a Phoenix".
Angus 24/25 HP Wednesday August 31st, 2005 9:20:53 AM
Angus follows Jella up to see the Bugbear and is amazed at her reaction. Kids can handle anything, now their parents may be another story entirely, not to mention shopkeeper or guards.....
Angus sees the bright light in front of the GG and comments to Lang. "You go check it out and I will get the kids down stairs again. You never know." Angus looks around to see what kids are on the main level and yells. "Ok kids time for games down in the celler. Last one down is a rotten egg." Angus makes sure all the kids get downstairs.
Xenia - OoC Wednesday August 31st, 2005 9:42:57 AM
Can anyone else hear the Phoenix in their heads? Or is it speaking exclusively to Wynn?
that comment was directed at Wynn only...George
Xenia d20+17=19 d20+12=22 Wednesday August 31st, 2005 11:56:27 AM Huh? What?
Xenia stares down into the street at the flaming bird. The rogue barely has enough time to grab up her bow before following behind Wynn, her hand in his. She tries to catch a better look at the bird and the street around it before she's pulled away.
"Phoenix. That's a good thing. Right, Wynn?" she asks as they hustle back along the corridor to the stairs.
"C'mon kids, lets go back down," she rounds up any of the kids that have made it to the second floor on the way.
With a worried look she turns to the street as though looking through the walls at the burning bird, the Phoenix, outside. Big animals. The girl rogue has had enough of big animals for a while.

Belkior Wednesday August 31st, 2005 12:01:45 PM
The halfling cleric continues with his tending to the injured, oblivious to anything happening outside the inn.
The children have become more accustomed to the changes in Belkior's legs. Probably, in light of the changes to Florin and Lang, a halfling with furry legs wouldn't be too shocking. And, truth be told, the halfling is enjoying the increased pace that he can walk at. And those annoying human height stairs aren't quite so annoying any longer. Fortunately, no one has made any cracks about "hairy halfling feet".
Lang (ac 22; hp 56/67) & Sunshine (ac 22; hp 47/47) d20+6=21 d20+6=13 Wednesday August 31st, 2005 2:09:28 PM
"Yes Jella it is me. Some strange magic has changed me into this big, hairy monster-like thing, but I am still me on the inside. I am still the same guy with the nice doggie. And of course I will be your big, teddy bear", Lang says with watery eyes.
Lang hears some activity outside the Giggling Ghost, but is not exactly sure of what he hears as it sounds like wings beating (listen 21/25).
"Jella, why don't you run along with uncle Angus back downstairs with the other children while your dad and your aunts and uncles see what is going on outside. It is probably just some townsfolk, but we better make sure before we let them in."
Lang takes a quick look through the opening he made and quite easily sees some of the large bird outside (spot 13/17). He moves towards the barricade and will help if they decide to take it down.

Tionel Wednesday August 31st, 2005 2:24:11 PM
Tionel smiles at the scene of Lang being accepted. He comes over and puts a hand on his friend's shoulder, and scratches Sunshine behind the ears. "I'm sure things will be all right." The appearance of the phoenix is somewhat startling...but Tionel takes it in stride as yet another of the amazing events to occur. This one, he can possibly deal with. He swings the door open after pushing a few things out of the way, and with a swish of his hat, invites the Phoenix in. "Please, noble sir, we did not expect any more visitors this day, except of the vegetative variety." Now, mind you, Tionel did not hear the phoenix speak in his mind, nor does he know why the phoenix is there. All he knows is, this is one powerful authority of nature, and it's best to treat it like one. Just seeing the magnificent plumage is a marvel enough. Tionel can't help but admire its' fashion sense.
Florin Jadenth Wednesday August 31st, 2005 3:05:35 PM
Florin smiles seeing Jella except Lang and moves over to gently touch Jella's shoulder, "Jella, please do as my friends have said and go down stairs for the moment please. Yu can come back up in alittle bit I promise." Florin also gives Lang and gentle smiles, "Feel alittle better my friend?" Florin smiles more and gives the large man a gentle nudge before looking to the doorway area.
Florin blinks when the news of a phoenix at the front door of the GG is called out and he moves over to check it out also while motioning to Lang, "Well, guess we should open the door. I doubt that it's a enemy in disguise or someone is going through alot of trouble to look impressive."
Florin smiles and holds his helmet in his hand now as he awaits the new visitor to enter the GG once the baracade is moved. Once the phoenix is inside he bows low to it and smiles, "Greetings noble phoenix, or maybe I should call you a fire lord. I mean no offense but a book I once read called your kind as such." Florin looks around at the Shields and smiles again deciding on introductions, "I am Florin Jadenth, a simple paladin of Domi and leader of the Shields of Hope. These are my friends." Florin allows the others to introduce themselves as to not insult anyone.
After introductions are done Florin speaks once more, "I do not mean to be rude sir, but what blessing has brought you here? We as you can tell do not get messages or information from such magestic creatures as yourself and it is a honor none the less to just see one of your kind since I have like probably everyone here, only ready about your kind. I believe it said Domi forged a armor or weapon with the help of a phoenix once but I can't remember the complete details right now."
DM George "Surprise!" Wednesday August 31st, 2005 7:24:48 PM
The doorway is opened and the bright colored bird stalks into the room. His wise eyes peer around taking in the scene. He seems to notice every detail.
All, including the children and people downstairs hear in their heads, Thank you for letting me in. It took courage to let such an unknown into your safe dwelling during such difficult times. I commend you on your courage and stout hearts.
I have come to you in peace. I have come to you in harmony. I have come to you with an open heart. My name is Elbyron. Some of you might refer to me as the Fay King.
The phoenix looks quickly around at the quickly tensing muscles and the hands slapping on hilts. Please hear me out. I have no intentions on harming you my children. I have come only to talk.
Wynn Wednesday August 31st, 2005 7:50:07 PM
"Everyone take it easy" the bard calls out. "In all of the tales I have heard told, and all of the songs I've heard sung, never was there a Phoenix that did not bode well."
Wynn purposefully moves between the giant bird and the rest of the party. "Let us hear what Elbyron has to tell".
Xenia Wednesday August 31st, 2005 9:03:38 PM
Mindful of the fire elementals from the day before, Xenia looks out from half way behind Wynn.
The dream comes back to her as well, and she reaches into her pouch.
"You come to talk about these, right?" She holds the three acorns out in the palm of her hand. Each is carved with a single rune.
Florin Jadenth Thursday September 1st, 2005 1:20:25 AM
Florin frowns some and shakes his head, "So you come to us in a form that would get us to lower our guard moreless. Or is it that your true form is to nasty for us to bare wittness too? I'm sorry for speaking so plainly by I have heard quite enough of you in our dreams and such...now what do you wish? speak so we may decide on the best course of action."
Florin stands listening but true to his natural caution his hand rests on the handle of his sword, ready to fight if it comes to it, however wise or unwise that course may be.
(George: I will have Florin's updated CS out to you later today or hope to. When I went in to check my email I notieced yahoo bounced the email back to me with a error message. Sorry.)
Belkior Thursday September 1st, 2005 8:15:47 AM
Hearing the voice of the Fae King, the halfling cleric looks around at the children. It's evident that all of them have also had this visitation. The children's reactions range from surprise to fear.
Someone will have to stay with the children to keep them safe and secure during this visit. Right now, with Happy in the kitchen preparing food, it looks like Belkior will be staying downstairs.
After all, the halfling has only slight doubts about how he would vote. He reaches down and feels the soft fur covering his legs, thinking on how this change came to be. He also thinks of all the citizens of the Floating City left homeless, or worse, because of the influence of this being. As he moves to console the frightened children, he can't help but think that any future orphanage will need to be bigger. Possibly much bigger.
Angus 24.25 HP Thursday September 1st, 2005 9:54:40 AM
Upon hear the Fey King's name spoken Angus too looks back to the kids. Angus then remembers the dream and takes out his three acorns and arranges them in his hand: REFORM, DIE, SLEEP. Which to choose? Lets hear what the fire bird has to say.
Tionel Thursday September 1st, 2005 11:59:45 AM
"How can you be the fae king?" is the first question that pops out of Tionel's mouth. He doesn't add a suspicion that immediately arrises, but it's obvious in his face. Still, the phoenix is a beautiful creature, and Tionel can't help but admire its feathers, tilting his head slightly as he watches the fire play along them.
Lang (ac 22; hp 56/67) & Sunshine (ac 22; hp 47/47) Thursday September 1st, 2005 10:13:17 PM
Lang waits to hear what the bird/fae king has to say. He also wonders why the king came to them in this shape. But then again, what is the true form of the fae king?
DM George "We are just having a discussion." Thursday September 1st, 2005 11:06:47 PM
The phoenix looks at Florin with his piercing eyes and all hear thundering in their heads, "You think you could keep me out with a mere door! I can summon hurricanes, tornados and tidal waves and you think you can keep me out with a mere door. Ah such arrogance."
Elbyron, in phoenix form, paces back and forth and you almost think you hear counting in your head. Everyone still hears the broadcast, but it is less powerful. No, I didn't come here for battle.... though you seem to wish it! I came to talk to you.
Your group though weaker and less skilled than many, are heroes of the land. The gods and the forces of power see something in you. You have been given a choice. The choice is very important to me but also to many of you. You have been given a choice that will effect all life on the Wold. Many of you personally will be effected and possibly weakened if you choice wrong. Do you want to hear more or do you wish to draw your weapons and sling your spells?
Elbyron stops and waits to hear your answer.
Xenia Friday September 2nd, 2005 7:51:33 AM
Xenia tries to clamp her hands over her ears as the voice explodes in her head. Kind of hard to do with a bow in one hand and three acorns in the other. Not that it would have done any good either.
"WHAS A MATTER WITH YOU?!?!?!" the flame headed rogue shouts, despite the overwhelming nature of the Fey King, lord of nature, commander of elements, etc, etc, etc ...
"We *look* like we're ready to attack you? Noooooo! SO STOP IT WITH YOUR SHOUTING ALREADY!!!!!!"
"You wanna talk, then talk. There's no one here stoppin' you from that. But I'll tell ya, from what I heard of all the bad things that happened these past few weeks, it's all a'cause of *you* waking up."
"Now, maybe that's your fault, and maybe it's not. But now that I met you for up front and in person, I think you're something of a *jerk*."
"And I tell ya, 'cause of that, I got half a mind to give you *this*." And she rolls one of the acorns up between her thumb and forefinger, thrusting it forward so that he can see. On the acorn is the rune that says DIE.
"So you talk. You talk and I'll listen. But maybe you oughta try and be civil and watch what you say, huh?"
Tionel Friday September 2nd, 2005 1:14:32 PM
"Xenia! Show some civility! The first rule of manners is, that you always show them, even when others do not," Tionel automatically chides the half-elf. Then he chuckles. "Now, then, sir. Please, go on and tell us what this choice is. We will keep an open mind, trust me."
Angus 24/25 HP Friday September 2nd, 2005 1:50:18 PM
Angus is impressed with the Pheonix's telepathy and wonders if it works both ways. Angus andmires the birds plumage and thinks "May I have one of your feathers, they are so impressive."
Angus is still holding out his three acorns and their potential use is also in the back of his mind..

Xenia (2nd Illegal Post) Friday September 2nd, 2005 3:24:00 PM
Xenia lowers her eyes under Tionel's admonition.
"Yeah. Sure. Sorry." She gives a little curtsy, defiance still smoldering in her eyes.
Lang (ac 22; hp 56/67) & Sunshine (ac 22; hp 47/47) Friday September 2nd, 2005 3:36:51 PM
He is not doing himself any favors by calling us "weaker and less skilled", Lang thinks. He calls us arrogant, but conveniently points out the power he can wield.
"It is not a door, but a barricade. And we did not construct it to keep out the high and mighty Fae King. It is meant to keep out lowly plant creatures."
"If you came here to talk then start talking. You have a lot of convincing to do to most of us that the nature upheaval we have witnessed in the past few days has been beneficial to any of the humanoid types within these walls."
"As a matter of fact you have helped me eliminate one of my choices."
With that said, Lang retrieves the Sleep acorn, drops it to the ground and crushes it under his boot.
Syr (Sub/Al) Friday September 2nd, 2005 5:16:02 PM
Looking at the three acorns resting in his palm, Syrdeth Redbow answers as though returning from a far away place.
"You said we may be effected. Personally. Maybe weakened. Go ahead. I'm listening."
Wynn Friday September 2nd, 2005 8:58:37 PM
The bard waits patiently for the Phoenix to explain the choice before them
Florin Jadenth Friday September 2nd, 2005 10:02:59 PM
Florin frowns at the Fae King's comments he first makes in his head and speaks clearly and quite cold, "I said nothing of the door, I said you cme in a form that would gets us to lower our guard...we heard how evil or whatever your suppose to be and I go off of that till proven otherwise...so far you have done a poor job of proving anything I heard as wrong. Get my drift? An I have no weapon out yet but face it, king or no king I will defend my friends, myself and the word of my Lord Domi."
Florin leaves his hand on his sword and takes a deep breath, "Now continue, I'm listening if you want to provide answers or even try to prove your nothing we have heard."
DM George Friday September 2nd, 2005 11:43:08 PM
Elbyron looks around at the Shields and you hear a mental sigh in you heads. Where to start? The first thing I must explain is I am not evil. Nature can be cruel but isn't evil. When a hawk strikes the rabbit, the rabbit might think the hawk evil, but it isn't.
When the river floods the plains and the farmers lose a crop, is it evil? The farmer doesn't think about the nutrients entering the soil but only about his lost income and how he will feed his family.
When lightning strikes a tree and starts a wild fire, many living creatures and plants lose their lives, but is the lightning bolt or the fire evil? No I think not.
I was asleep for thousands of years. When I was awoken, my powers exploded over the natural world. I didn't plan for this to happen, it was just a result of my being awakened. I regret that it happened but I was powerless to prevent it.
Now on to the real question. Many of the sentient races are feeling resentment towards me. They want me gone, banished forever or outright killed, but do you realize the cost to you?"
The phoenix suddenly shifts his shape and a handsome elf is standing in front of you. He says in a clear voice, "If I am killed, then nature itself would be weakened." He looks directly at Tionel and says, "You have enjoyed increased powers Druid since my awakening. If I die, you can expect your powers to be severly curtailed. The fairie world would shrink and be less able to defend itself from the spread of civilization. Sprites, nymphs, treants could all disappear."
He glances towards Syr and Xenia and continues, "Elves, of all the sentient noble races, are the most closely allied to the faire kind. They too would be affected. How I am not sure. Maybe they wouldn't live as long, or not be able to see in the dark as well. What it will be, I don't know but I am sure of the fact they would be diminished.
Cities would grow in strength and power. They would spread over the land, without regard to the natural balance. Eventually they will destroy it. It might not be in your time or even your great grandchild's time, but I am sure that time would come.
If I am allowed to remain awake, I promise the opposite. The elves would remain the strong race they are today. Perhaps even stronger with me watching over them. The spread of civilization, will still commence but not to the ruin of the natural order."
He again glances at Lang and Tionel and continues, "Those who follow nature will be rewarded with the increased powers they are seeing now. Their animal companions will stay strong, their ablility to affect nature will stay as it is now."
The elf again reshapes itself into the phoenix and everyone hears in there minds again, "I can be a force of stablization in this Wold but I won't allow myself to be destroyed. If you feel you have to vote that way, I will have to try and stop you. I can't allow my precious children to be exploited, poisoned and eventually destroyed. So what will it be, life for all? or death for the natural order?"
Xenia Saturday September 3rd, 2005 6:01:05 PM
Xenia opens her mouth to speak.
Then she closes it.
Again, she starts to speak. And then, once more, she stops.
In this short span of mere seconds, myriad thoughts tumble and swirl through the rogue's head as she thinks upon Elbyron's arguments.
"Alright. So we do need, like, nature and stuff. For food and all kinds of stuff. But you look around yourself. You see the way we're standing, 'cause the floor is tipped? You see all this stuff broken, and all the people hurt? That's way too out of control. Way way!"
"You say it's not your fault. You can't control it. Well yeah. Who can control the weather, huh? So, what's to say we don't get more of this if we let you go on like you have. More of this, oops, I can't control it stuff?"
"And, if you can control it now, why don't you start fixing things? Get your stupid vines to set the city back even like. Make trees that, like, grow furniture or sumptin. And make the Crying Woods back off! We got folks who died here, you know! You know!?!"
Xenia wipes tears of anger from her cheek with the backs of her hands. She sniffs a few times and draws a few breaths before continuing.
"You wanna make things better, then fine. You make things better. But I tell you what I see now. I see that instead of going out and helping folks, you're coming here and yelling at us. Instead of trying to make things right, you're here talking to us about power and fighting and stuff. Just goes to show me where your head is wrong in all this."
Xenia sniffs. She straightens up a bit and walks around to stand beside Wynn, to look the Phoenix Elbyron in the eye.
"It's not too late, though. You know. You wanna start making things right. Lot of folks could use help. Could change a lot of folks' minds. 'S up to you."
Angus 24/25 HP d20+14=23 d20+7=21 Sunday September 4th, 2005 4:42:45 PM
Angus thinks to himself, More cities, less out of control nature, and the elves reigned in, not a bad prospect.
Angus speaks aloud. "This time all races get a vote and not just the elves. For all the elves glory and wisdom they did not see this calamity coming. Look at the devastation."
Angus looks to Tionel. "I hope you do not hold it against me, but I will not vote to keep this calamity going, even at the expense of your new found powers."
Angus looks to the shields "It may be time to vote our acorns, does anyone have an idea how the nuts work?" (spellcraft 23, knowledge acrane 21)
Wynn d20+6=24 Sunday September 4th, 2005 6:36:22 PM
Wynn addresses the Phoenix with as much diplomacy as he can muster[Diplomacy=24].
"My pretty friend makes an interesting point. An outstretched hand of assistance would go a long way toward winning our trust and our sympathy. Is there no way you can show us your good intent. Is there no way to put right what has been torn asunder?"
Syr is back! Monday September 5th, 2005 3:53:38 AM
A look of puzzlement comes over his face, "Rabbits, farms, and rivers? You do know this elf has lived in the City all of his life, right? I can't really relate with that. I agree with the dark elf here, show me the benefit and we are more likely to vote your way."
"We took our chances with Nature's whimsy a short while ago and didn't come out too bad." With a grimace at the hulking figure of the bugbear, "Well... with a few exceptions."
"Now you say nature has gone wild, why not just take a little catnap until it calms down a bit? Seems to me that would work for everyone. I can understand waking up and feeling grumpy. After all, I do live with Angus..."
Lang (ac 22; hp 56/67) & Sunshine (ac 22; hp 47/47) Monday September 5th, 2005 10:36:54 AM
"What you are saying doesn't totally make sense. You talk about a hawk killing a rabbit, lightning striking a tree and other things in a similar vein. These things are, for the most part, totally random events and without any intelligent thought processes. They are acts of nature or a part of the food chain. What we are seeing here in the Floating City is not natural. There is an intelligent being or beings controlling the attempted destruction of this city. Where is the natural order in this attack? And why are you letting it happen?"
"You also talk about being powerless to prevent what happened upon your awakening. That it was just your powers exploding, I am assuming before you could gain control of them once awakened. Well, you are awake now and you just told us that you could summon hurricanes, tornadoes and tidal waves to blast down our feeble attempt at a barricade. Why aren't you using your powers to stop the unnatural event that is happening here in the Floating City? I have seen women and children, untrained in fighting, do more to try and stop this unnatural occurrence than you have. Many of your elf children have died and are probably dying as we speak. Why aren't you doing anything to stop it?"
"One other thing I would like to know before I make my decision is what is happening in other parts of the Wold? How many of these unnatural power explosions have happened and how are they affecting the intelligent beings of the Wold?"
Tionel Monday September 5th, 2005 4:13:48 PM
"I disagree, Lang. These are not coordinated, intelligent attacks, at least in the way that you refer to an elf or other being with some degree of planning and cooperation. The orclets and the shambling creatures are simply plants about as smart as any animal. They are rampaging about, attacking for food, but not for destruction. They are not evil, just beastial." Tionel ponders some more. "But other awful events happen all the time as a result of nature. Hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, famine, disease... All of them seemingly random and horrible to the people of the time. Yet in the long run, weren't they also somewhat necessary? If a river swells as a result of too much rain, shouldn't it not be contained or not be depended upon? "The way you people speak, you wish for nature to be tamed, like a garden. Remember the crying woods? That is the natural condition of this area. It was bestial and unfit for civilization before the fae king. There were problems with it before he was brought back. "Humans are always attempting to raze forests, harvest crops, and pound nature into submission. When the lands are tilled into flatness, floods come, and they cry. They build walls around their cities to protect themselves from the outside, then suffer plague and famine, or prey upon each other like animals. Where I'm going with this is simple... this city was not supposed to be here. But when it came here, it came to an area of unfriendly vegetation. Perhaps attack was inevitable. I certainly see the fae king's point... without nature having done this, do you not think that the people of the floating city would have spread over the Crying Woods, cut down the trees for lumber, colonized it, probably eventually exiled the elves? "But unlike others, I'm not interested in a quid pro quo. Yes, my powers have increased, but I have never depended upon power or sought control over others. I have always been of the opinion that people should adapt to nature, not the other way around, and that civilizations, the cities themselves, are natural." Tionel considers and rubs his fingers over the back of his wrist contemplatively. "I wonder one question. Cannot the cities become one with nature? Elven cities are often founded midst the trees. Can we bring that to the floating city, can we use the power of nature to bring majesty and save it from destruction? That above all else would make me happy...if man and nature could coexist, and not from man being master, but from both being symbiotic."
Florin Jadenth Monday September 5th, 2005 6:06:27 PM
Florin closes his eyes and thinks to himself as he crossesh is arms and takes in all this and everything he has come to know and hold dead in his life, "I'll agree, nature is not a force that can be just said is good or evil. We just live with it like we do most things, rather it is good one day or bad the next."
Florin opens his eyes and looks to the Fae King and motions around the room, "Plant creatures attacked this city though, vines currently are trying to topple it over into the water. If what you say is true and this is the reaction to your awakening then why not stop it? You want us to side for you then we need some type of show that your not pulling the wool over our eyes....I mean what if we allow you to live only to have the city jerked over? I have no problem with you for say, I go by those I have heard things from. I have heard their comments and their resolve on the matter, now where is yours? where is your proof of your words? I'm a paladin of Domi good sir which means I defend people and my lord. Show me your deserving of our help, our understanding."
DM George "Haggling Monday September 5th, 2005 9:33:16 PM
The Phoenix looks from to all the members present in the room and nods his head. "Yes I have the power to restore this city or at least free it from the grip of the Crying Jungle. Understand though, as the Gods have granted each of you free will, nature to some extent has it as well.
Areas like the area you call the Crying Jungle have a rudimentary intelligence. Nothing like yours but there none the less. It, for reasons of its own, hates the civilized world and will always defend its borders from them. I can free the city, but don't have the ability to stop the attacks. To many creatures are involved. I can enhance those creatures or surpress them somewhat but not control them, just like Domi doesn't entirely control you." Elbyron points a claw a Florin.
Elbyron then gazes at Lang, "The expansion of nature's influence is Woldwide. You here are caught in a more difficult struggle, because of the Crying Wood's previous power, prejudices, and unfortunate location of the city. Some areas are doing quite well, harvests are bountiful, fishing catches are large and game is plentiful. Again in other areas, nature can be cruel. Storms are stronger, volcanos are born and so on. You are seeing an overall strengthening of nature. Of course things will even out somewhat now the initial flush of my pent up powers is spent. If you vote to keep me alive and concious, then I intend to use my power to help the natural Wold. I want to make it easier for all the noble races to live in nature and hope to turn them away from exploiting its bounty but conserving it and nuturing it for the betterment of all. Remember you are part of nature yourselves"
He gazes at all the participants and goes on."So what is it going to be? Will you vote to put me to sleep or death, and leave the city to finish its struggles against the Crying Jungle? Or will you vote for life and work with me to retore the city, help preserve nature and make the wold you live in a more balanced and joyious place?
Xenia Monday September 5th, 2005 10:01:51 PM
Xenia rolls up her metaphoric sleeves and puts on her hard-bargaining face.
"Alright. You ask us what it's gonna be. Alright, I'll tell you what it's gonna be. How's about a definite maybe?"
"You say you can do this, and you say you *can't* do that. 'Kay, well I say you haven't done nothing yet. I'm still standing here one leg higher than another. We still got children downstairs with no home. We all still got three acorns that say you can still DIE."
"Nothin' threatening or any of that, mind you. This is just business. Like my Da always said, 'All business begins with a basis of Trust.' Well, right now, we ain't got much of a basis. "
"Keep in mind, we seen you too. We seen what you can do. Trees loving you and afraid of you at the same time. You sending wind all the way around the Wold. That's big stuff. We seen it in a dream. Just so you know, 'kay?"
"So, now that we got that out of the way, and we're seeing eye to eye, whacha gonna do to make things right? I mean, you know we gotta see it before we can let these things go, right? There are too many folks relying on us to make things good for us to make a mistake right now. I hope you can see that. We need something done. We gotta see it and feel it and see the folks happy before we can choose."
"So, whacha gonna do? And when are you gonna start?"
Angus HP 24/25 Tuesday September 6th, 2005 12:00:39 AM
Angus waits for Xenia to finish then adds. "We have an acorn that says Reform, yet you only mention sleep or death, do you not wish to reform?" Angus looks to the acorn that says die and speaks to the red bird again. "In legend it is said that the Pheniox can not be killed, how will you die then if we choose that path?"
Belkior Tuesday September 6th, 2005 9:45:24 AM
The halfling cleric continues to minister to the children in the basement. He's torn, however. He doesn't trust the avatar, so keeping the children away from him is the safest course. Belkior wouldn't put it past the Fae King to use the children as hostages to the group's decision. However, if the debate between the Shields and Eberyon flares into violence, he will need to be close to support his companions. So he is standing at the foot of the stairs, both to block any curious child from going up to look at the avatar, and ready to support his companions. From there, he manages to overhear Angus' question about the Reform option.
Syr Tuesday September 6th, 2005 1:13:34 PM
Syr stands back and watches, unconvinced by the bird's story and wondering what reform will imply to elves. Whispering to Angus, "Hmm legend implies it can be killed, it just won't stay dead?"
Wynn Tuesday September 6th, 2005 8:21:21 PM
The bard considers the words of the avatar as well as those of his companions. "A symbol then" he looks to the Phoenix. "Show us that you can control the power that has been unleashed. Call off the vines that threaten to topple the city and you will convince me and many others."
Lang (ac 22; hp 56/67) & Sunshine (ac 22; hp 47/47) Tuesday September 6th, 2005 8:58:50 PM
"Tionel I disagree. Where in the animal kingdom do you see at least 3 and probably 4 different creatures working in effort towards one goal? We have seen 3 different plant creatures, the Orclets, Shambling Mounds and Tendriculous all working together and not fighting each other. On top of that a plant creature is using its vines to try and topple the city. This is an intelligent attack above and beyond any animal's intelligence."
"So once again I say this is an unnatural attack. If you are kept in power what actions will you take to see that events like this are not going to happen?"
Florin Jadenth Tuesday September 6th, 2005 9:37:58 PM
Florin crosses his arms once again and liks the others awaits some actions on the Fae King's part to prove his sincereity in his words. Florin isn't going to be easily swayed on this deal here.
DM George "Haggling round 2" Tuesday September 6th, 2005 10:26:01 PM
The phoenix blurs in shape and suddenly becomes a handsome man standing in front of the group. He is tall and broad of shoulder and has incredibly wise looking eyes.
He looks at the bugbear and says in clear common, "I intend to use my powers to strengthen the natural order. Those that care about the preservation of nature and her creatures will be called my friend. Those who only seek to exploit the natural world will be my enemy.
Let me try to explain, every creature is part of the lifecycle of this plane of existance. From the blade of grass to the hunting tiger, from the ant crawling on the leaves to the farmer dwelling in his village, all have a place in the plane.
I am against the perversion of nature. Mages who warp my creatures and change their basic design will receive my ire. Clerics who raise undead armies to scourge the land deserve my wrath. Societies who plunder nature without regard or thought to all the life in the area will be declared miscreants and suffer my displeasure."
He looks at the Lang and says, "Beware your pride. Who is to say who is more important. The noble races have to much self regard. Only the elves truly feel the land and understand how to live with it. Most believe it is something to be conquered and exploited. If you choice life, I will use my powers to try and help the other races better understand how to live in accord with all creatures. Yes you must live, you must eat, you must grow crops and hunt but you don't have to butcher the land for greed and exploitation."
Elbyron looks at Wynn who is asking for a demonstration and nods his head. He closes his eyes and spreads his hands palm up. He starts to shine with a light nimbus which surrounds him. Everyone jumps as they feel slithering at their feet and hear much crackling on the ceilings above them. The children in the basement cry out and point as all the rose branches start slithering away. Soon every floor, wall and ceiling in the Giggling Ghost is free of vines.
Elbyron opens his eyes and smiles, "There, I have proven my ablility to effect change in this city. I can and will release the other vines holding the city when you choose the acorn that says reform." He smiles an strange little smile and finishes with, "Besides I doubt you want the city totally released now anyway."
Xenia Tuesday September 6th, 2005 11:27:41 PM
"Nice trick." Xenia's mouth is pulled down at one corner in a look of dry assessment. "Nice trick. But, you didn't *help* anyone."
"I'm not sure you understand," the dark rogue shakes her head, and her pony tail waggles behind, "we know you can do it. We don't need a demonstration. We know you *can* do a lot of things. But we're not interested in what you can do. We're interested in what you will do."
"What we don't know is what you're willing to do to help folks. Are you willing to use your power to ease the city back to being upright? And do it so you don't hurt anyone inside?"
"Right now, I see someone who doesn't care much about anyone else but himself. All you're talking about is what you want. Oh, 'I will do this for nature. And nature will be that to me. These people will be my enemies. And those people will be my friends.'"
"Well, let me tell you, what your talking about doesn't sound much different than the things we got right now. Only diff is, if you live, you get to dole out to those you like, and you get to womp on those you don't. Ok. You got ideals. And that's fine. Ideals are good. And your ideals ain't bad ideals either."
"But you got no compassion."
"What I see is you here, bargaining for your life. You're in this fix because you're powers went a little splooey. Ok, that's not your fault. But, instead of getting out there with all of your powers and trying to make it good, trying to help people. You're here, bargaining with a bunch of folks with some acorns."
Xenia shakes her head.
"Can't you see how stupid that is? Can't you see it? So, maybe you can't move the city with folks inside. Maybe it would be too rough. Well, help us get the folks out. Help us get these kids to some place safe. Then you can get the city straightened up some how. And I'll tell you ... I'll tell ya, if you do that, you won't even *need* to bargain with a small group of weaker and less skilled heroes. That's a'cause you'll have so many people who love you that it won't matter!
"Don't you see it?" she says. "Doncha see it?"
Tionel Wednesday September 7th, 2005 5:53:17 AM
"Xenia..." Tionel sighs and rubs the tips of his fingers through his forehead. "Pardon me dear, calm down. What you want, it seems, is that this problem never occured, that the acorns would not be given to us. Obviously, the situation, the dream we were given, must be explained to us, and he must be allowed to plead his case. On the other hand, you are right when you ask that he do this, but for a different reason than you state." Tionel turns to Lang. "As to that, well, the orclets are part of the one larger creature. Perhaps they are bound in certain degrees, but if so, they seem all of one mind. Do you remember the Crying Forest? It, too, was of one mind. The nastiness that most of it was came from that, not from any sort of separate intelligence. Again, I suspect it is not the plants themselves which do this, but a malevolent spirit beyond them." Then he regards the phoenix/elflord. "Let me explain, and please, pardon me for being so long-winded and clumsy with words. "What she's saying, sir, is that you got us into this mess, you should get us out. That is, you should use your powers to halt problems you create. You should be respected not for your power and nature, but for your deeds and actions. Now, I agree to a degree, but I think that's a far more human idea than one you're used to, so I think it's good for a half-elf to explain it to you. You're probably used to being respected in your time, and where did this respect come from? Being a Lord, which comes from birth, or your powers, which I'm sure were not learned with great difficulty but granted as a blessing by the Wold. That is the ancient way; respect for power, power given by one's being, good and evil being part of one's composition. Unicorns always are good and lords of the forest, why? They are born that way, and given their powers as lords because that is their position. "What she's asking, my lord, is that you prove your position, not that you accept it. Use your powers wisely, and we will see you as the lord that you are. Perhaps that is why a less-powerful, less-influential group such as we were chosen to judge you." He looks to the others and quickly explains his last sentence, not as pandering to the Fae King's words, but honesty; "I may not be as great a druid as Peerimus, and perhaps the others in our group are not as impressive as those Children of Chaos were. The other groups out there, perhaps they can judge you because of their power or their natures. "We don't think we're better than everyone else, my lord. We may be surrounded by rich nobles, but we Shields side with the orphans at heart. We live by them, and they are our family. The powers we have we do not use to secure wealth, prestige, or further power for ourselves, but for the defense of the powerless. While those other adventurers seem to fight for bigger ideals like good and evil, we fight simply for the hope that these children represent, the hope of a brighter future. "Now, that doesn't make us better than everyone else. Why, I'm sure that we slay far fewer dragons and get rid of less outright evils than other groups. But which would you prefer; an axe that bleeds with goblin blood or a seed planted with care? "That said, what we want you to do is simple. Be the lord that you promise to be. And be a Crafter, a creator of life. Now, do we have to make the choices immediately, or can we decide later? I suggest for my friends, who wish to see, as I said, the deeds that you do."
Angus 24/25 HP Wednesday September 7th, 2005 9:31:07 AM
Angus is intrigued by the shapechanger. "That is a start, but only a start." as Angus looks at the retreating vines. "We seem to have influence, being the bearers of the acorns. many of us were recently curese by natures magic. Can you remove the curses? That may buy favor."
Angus fingers his acorns and seems to consider options. "If we choose reform, what will stop the vines form overtaking the this city or any city again?" Angus taps his chin with an acorn while clearly talking to himself. "Reform means nature is strong, Die means nature is weak and sleep is the status quo of maybe a week ago. Choices, Choices. It seems we finally have a vote that counts."
Belkior Wednesday September 7th, 2005 10:45:32 AM
From what he can hear from the basement, the halfling cleric feels that his companions are asking the correct questions.
"A strengthened nature isn't to my liking", thinks Belkior. "Sure, maybe people will heal faster and what not. But diseases and vermin will probably just strike that much harder when they occur."
The halfling cleric looks around at the children in the basement, and thinks on what has happened to himself and his companions. "Somehow, I don't think choosing "Sleep" will turn the clock back. We'll still be like this, they'll stil be injured, and many others like them will still be orphans. Sure, the forest will go back to what it was before, but is that enough? Alemi is the God of Healing, so it isn''t really for me to judge. What would a follower of Pantheon decide? Is putting nature and the Fey King back to what they were enough to correct what has happened?"
Belkior absently strokes his leg as he thinks. "What would a weakened nature mean? We have Eberyon's word for what would occur, but can we trust him. Maybe nature's cycle would turn more slowly, or swing less wildly. It certainly isn't what Eberyon wants, so he probably won't present it accurately."
The halfling has an insight, suddenly as he thinks about his god. He calls out to his companions, "Guys! Remember this - Eberyon only has power over nature, not life itself! That's the domain of a deity, who may not be involved in this question!"
Syr Wednesday September 7th, 2005 2:49:49 PM
The elf watches Tionel with a new appreciation. Nodding with his speech, he thinks to himself, 'wow, when he gets long winded he really makes alot of sense...'
Looking over his shoulder he asks Lang quietly, "Is our only fear that the Wold will turn into one giant version of the Crying Woods? That place was nature unchecked and defintely unfriendly to any outsiders. Seems to me the decision would be an easy one."
He weighs the acorns in his hands and looks closely at the 'die' one contemplating the choice.
DM George Wednesday September 7th, 2005 8:40:40 PM
OOC...Folks I am gonna hold off posting tonight. Two reasons, I am looking for more posts from you and also waiting on some answers from the PTB on other groups in the Big Float
Lang (ac 22; hp 56/67) & Sunshine (ac 22; hp 47/47) Wednesday September 7th, 2005 8:42:50 PM
"Yes Syr, it is my fear that nature will organize like man and other humanoids and run over the Wold. At least humanoids are intelligent and will be resisted by other humanoids from destroying everything. Yes, there will be areas of devastation, but others will be kept as natural as can be."
"I do not feel the same way about nature. There is very limited intelligence among plant and animal life. The basic needs of food, shelter and sleep drive most of them. What is going to keep them in check?"
Lang waits to hear more from the ever changing Fey King.
Wynn Wednesday September 7th, 2005 9:45:52 PM
The bard watches in wonderment as the avatar exercises his power and the vines withdraw from the ghost. "I may have had reservations before, but you have convinced me that your intentions are good."
Wynn looks to the rest of the party "I have seen the greed and disrespect of men like Perimon who treat the elves of the Crying Woods as 'specimens' and I have also experienced the sentient forest of the Culverwood and know that while it protects itself from intrusion it is not evil. I believe the same is true for Sabara, and that with guidance she will find a way to coexist with us, and us with her."
Wynn reaches into his belt pouch and finds the acorn marked 'ATONE' which he offers to the avatar. "You have my vote."
DM George Thursday September 8th, 2005 1:22:38 PM
Wynn makes his choice and holds up his acorn. If flares with light and quickly winks out. The other acorns turn to dust and blow away on the breeze.
Elbyron bows to the bard and murmers "My thanks to you good sir."
He listens to Xenia's speech and the comments that the others make and shifts yet again. Now the form of a large treant stands in front of the group. He says in a raspy wooden voice, "Young Lady, (he is looking a Xenia) you say I have no compassion. That is a false statement. It is a matter of perspective. If yow were in a burning room and only had the ablity to save either a baby human child or a skunk, which would you choose? No need to retort, I know the answer. You would choose the human child. Your instincts would drive you to that decision. You place more value on your own species. The difference from you and I is I place the same value on the skunk and the child. Both are part of nature. Both are equal in my eyes."
The treant's eyes scan everyone and he continues, "Some of you want me to prove myself. Some of you want me to cause your hurts and pain to go away. Others accuse me of being cold and only self-aware. When I awoke, huge pent up powers were released. I didn't direct those powers, they were just absorbed by the natural wold. Parts of the natural wold florished and provided extra bounty to all. In others, the power corrupted them and they used their new abilities to strike back at those they perceived to be persecuting them. Yet others just used the newly gained strength, to become better hunters to substain themselves.
You question the future. If I am allowed to live, my power and influence will be moderated from what you are seeing now. Nature will be strengthen. Those closest to nature will feel it more than others, but the natural wold won't become a force of retribution.
I will not buy your votes. You must choose following the wisdom in your hearts. If I could just buy your votes, then you wouldn't be worthy of the choice the Gods have given you."
Xenia Thursday September 8th, 2005 3:22:24 PM
"I can buy that." Xenia raises her thin arms and walks fearlessly in front of the treant. (Eearlessly, or, perhaps, foolishly.) "I can buy the perspective stuff. Everything is a matter of perspective. But what your saying then, is that you don't value us as much."
She looks up and stares the treant straight in the eye.
"Isn't that right? So why should we care about you? You tell me that, huh? We've had nature plenty before you came. Seems to me that nature was doing just fine."
"Anybody here think nature was having trouble before we woke this guy up?" Xenia turns and presents the question to her companions.
"And who said I wanted you to make the hurt go away. I didn't, Ti'nel," she turns on the druid before returning to Elbyron. "But it shows how much you're willing to do for others. It shows where your perspective is. You place more value on standing here and talking to us, than you place on helping us out. When you won't even walk us through the city to make sure these kids are safe, it shows me that except for these acorns you could just as well do without us. We could be walking and talking at the same time, but you don't. Tells me that what you value is yourself."
"Well, I say we need you just as much as you need us, and that is not at all. I say phooey to you." She takes the acorn with the rune for ATONE, and she tosses it over her shoulder. "In my perspective, nature was doing just fine before you came. The only question I gotta ask myself is do I hate you enough to want you to die?"
Xenia looks down at the two remaining acorns in her hand.
"You know," her voice drifts up from her contemplation, "in a lot of ways, you're right. It's where you place, like, value. In a way, I value myself more than I value you. And I'm not going to waste any of my energy on hating you. You can just go back to the way you were."
Xenia picks up the acorn that says SLEEP.
"Go back where you came from," she says.
Florin Jadenth Thursday September 8th, 2005 5:40:17 PM
Florin sighs and has been silent all this time as he ponders this whole ordeal, what to do, what to do...
After while Florin shakes his head, "Hmm, won't buy our vote but yet say you will fight us if we don't choose your way. That makes alot of sense. If we say you live you leave in peace, die you fight us to the death and I suppose if we say sleep you fight too."
Florin shakes his head again and looks to Xenia and the others, "I won't fight you inless forced, I won't kill him inless it comes to I have too. I vote sleep for the moment since him remaining alive might just mean we end up floating in the lake here after we give him what he wants. He sleeps or dies and we fight nature just like we have been already from the way I see it."
I am assuming you are voting though your comment "for the moment" has me slightly baffled. Once you vote, you vote.
Belkior Thursday September 8th, 2005 9:46:03 PM
The halfling cleric listens to the words of the Fae King's avatar and his companions. He agrees with Xenia's assessment.
"Kids, stay here while I go upstairs, please," Belkior instructs the children.
The halfling leaps up the stairs with his new legs. He moves to join his companions and address the avatar. "You say that you're not here to buy our votes, yet why are you here if not to do that?"
Pausing to finger his robes, Belkior's hands stray into the symbol of Alemi. "You say that you value a human life and the life of an animal equally. I have no argument with that, I even agree with it. But preserving life isn't your province, nor your concern. Except for your own life, it seems. Life is the domain of my Lord Alemi, not yours."
"By your statements, it would be more accurate to say that the value you place on the lives of the infant and the skunk is nothing. To you, the human and the skunk are faceless figure of no value in the overall course of nature. Faced with the decision of sparing or killing the human infant or the skunk, you wouldn't care what happens. Live or die, human or skunk, it doesn't matter to nature what happens."
"I've dedicated my life to preserving life. Nothing that has happened since your awakening has gone towards that goal. It's certain that nature was strengthened, but at a terrible to the lives of the creatures and plants. Will the Crying Woods ever recover from what your awakening has caused, regardless of whether you live or die?"
"Life will go on, whether nature is strengthened or weakened. But life will be more sure, more certain if your power is reined in. That's why I'm voting this way."
The halfling extends his small hand with the acorn marked "DIE" towards the avatar.
Lang (ac 22; hp 56/67) & Sunshine (ac 22; hp 47/47) Thursday September 8th, 2005 10:15:52 PM
Lang sees his companions start to cast their votes and quickly asks his final questions.
"I have two more questions I would like you to answer before I cast my vote on your fate."
"The first question concerns your awakening. You were asleep and awakened by the decision, for the most part, of the elves. How did you come about being asleep in the first place?"
"My second question concerns the vote the Crimson Shields have been selected to make. Is our group the only group deciding your fate?"
Lang stands patiently waiting for his answers. If the fey king does not answer then Lang will make his decision.
Angus Thursday September 8th, 2005 10:20:14 PM
Angus was ready to pick his acorn, but is interested in the questions Lang has posed. He takes his hand out of his pocket and leaves the acorn he had selected remaining in there.
Angus wonders what will happen to the Shields if the majority vote is death.
Syr Friday September 9th, 2005 2:47:32 AM
Syr takes the 'sleep' acorn in his right hand and holds it up to his eyes just looking at it. The other two he keeps in his left. From his posture, it's obvious which way his vote is leaning but he awaits the final word of Eberyon before casting any of the acorns aside.
Tionel Friday September 9th, 2005 2:36:39 PM
Tionel sighs and turns his thoughts inward. On one hand, he really wants to see where this guy will go with his magic, what he will do, if he will help others, and he obviously cares for life. But looking at his friends, he can't help but remember the last time he expected the best in people... it led to the burning down of the orphanage. If he lets loose the fae king, he'd be responsible for it, and what if that resulted in something he was sad about? Tionel picks out the SLEEP acorn, even though he was the one who seemed to advocate the fae king's ressurection the most.
DM George Saturday September 10th, 2005 10:06:44 PM
Xenia stands forward and makes her choice of sleep and her acorn flares and burns up in her hand. Her other acorns turn to dust, those Wold altering choices forever gone.
Belkior, the halfling of peace and love, surprising chooses death for the Fey King and the King winces with his choice.
Florin stands forward and also chooses sleep, thinking the middle ground is the way to go.
Tionel, after some agonizing moments of indecision, also chooses sleep. He choice seems to stun the Fey King as he thought he had the young druid's vote sewn up.
Lang, stand for and asks his questions and the other nondecided wait for his answers before making a decision.
The treant shifts form once again and returns to the phoenix form that he started with. The group hears in their heads, Back when the Wold was young, I controlled and shaped nature but realized that I alone was unsufficient to the task. I was the father but there was no mother. Nature needed a balance and I created an equal. She was to be my wife and queen. Her name is Maab. I believe you saw her in your dream. A dream she sent you. A dream she is using as a tool to sway you!
You can hear the spite in Elbyron's voice but also you almost hear the Pheonix sigh in your heads and he goes on, "Back when the Wold was young we were just experimenting with the creatures that should populate it. I became fond of some of my creations. Your long lost ancestors, less developed than you now, but still the forerunners of the noble races. They convinced me to act unwisely. I created some creatures that were out of balance. Really trolls aren't that bad but Maab disagreed. She, together with the Jericko decided I needed a rest. They might have been right because the long sleep has helped me realize that I need to take less of a hand in shaping the wold but use my powers to gentle it for all its inhabitants.
The Phoenix, yet agains shifts forms and huge lion stands in his place. Golden mane lines his head and he sits on powerful paws. Easily 10' tall he looks at the ranger who asked his questions. Again the Fey Kings voice rings in their heads. No you aren't the only group to be given this responsiblity. You are one of the chosen few though. You might recognize some of the others. The group who fought with you earlier has been given the responsibility as has the group you know as the Platinum Dragons. Why Maab singled you out, I don't know.
The huge lion lays down and rests his massive head between his paws. He looks at Angus, Lang, and Syr and says plaintively, "Please, I know you don't have reason to favor me. My awakening has caused much upheaval. Believe me when I tell you it was a by product of my awakening and not a concious choice. I only want to help nuture the Wold. I have been asleep for thousands of years and have paid my penance for any past transgressions. I will only work towards the betterment of all."
Xenia Saturday September 10th, 2005 10:29:24 PM Words, words, words.
"Why aren't you work for the betterment of all right now?" Xenia asks quietly. "It doesn't take much." She shakes her head, slow and sad. "But I don't see you doin' nothing at all."
"Some folks don't learn, you know. It's like they can't. It's like, well, it's in their nature. To do the same thing over and over and over again. Each time, they say they're sorry. And they really are. Really. It's so sad. Next time, they just go back and do it again."
The thin rogue folds her arms across her chest. Like she's cold. She shakes her head. "It's so sad."
Her eyes, cast down to the floor, slide to the corners for a glimpse of Wynn. They had sung together to bring this into being. And now look at it. She gives an involuntary shiver. Look at things now. What in the Wold is going to happen now?
Wynn Sunday September 11th, 2005 1:17:56 PM
The bard shakes his head and wonders if there is anything he can say that will lift the cloud of hate and anger from his companions. "I had hoped that my vote might sway some of your opinions towards life and atonement. The death and destruction wrought by nature on this city are not entirely of Ebyron's making. The Crying Woods and Sabara fought this city before the awakening. Lord Perminon was already encroaching on Elvenguard and Prionel had already been taken prisoner. What redemption might we expect from Perimon?"
Finally Wynn recalls the forest guardian that they had killed in the tree temple and the overpowering feeling of remorse he had felt. "Have we not ourselves made war on the forest? Florin, did you not feel the same sorrow as I when you fell upon the creature that guarded the bowl in the tree temple. Is it possible that we are as much to blame as Ebyron."
Angus Sunday September 11th, 2005 4:50:17 PM
Angus hears the answers from Elbyron and it does not change his choice of acorns. Nature has not been kind to him or the shields recently and he does not think that will change with the Fey King in charge.
Once again he reaches into his pocket and grabs an acorn. He removes his hand and displays his choice to Elbyron. it is the acorn with death on it.
Tionel Sunday September 11th, 2005 7:42:16 PM
((Errr... Sorry if you interpreted that I chose the sleep acorn, I was just sorta in character pondering it. Like, weighing it in my hand. Actually hadn't made up my choice yet.))
Then please make it. tough to tell pondering from action in some of these posts.
Lang (ac 22; hp 56/67) & Sunshine (ac 22; hp 47/47) Sunday September 11th, 2005 8:43:13 PM
Lang himself sighs, mostly in frustration. He hears what Elbyron says, but it is all one sided. Elbyron's side.
He truly wants to believe what Elbyron says. That the future will be better. But all Lang knows is that the Wold has changed and changed dramatically with his arrival. All Lang has to do is look down at his new form and see the power that nature is displaying right now.
Lang has to go with his gut. Before Elbyron was revived the Wold was more balanced. There were places that man ruled, places that natured ruled and places that both ruled. Now it is just nature that is ruling, and ruling strong and hard against anyone in its path.
The future Elbyron talks about is not one that Lang wants to think about. It is one of Elbyron's favorites and of nature being strong. Stronger than it should be. He thinks of the Floating City and wonders if it will ever be the same.
Lang looks at Sunshine and can see the difference in nature's power since Elbyron's arrival. Sunshine is bigger, but also more tempermental. Lang wants Sunshine back the way he was. His trusted companion who follow Lang without question.
All this thinking is giving Lang a headache. He reaches into his pouchbelt and withdraws the death acorn. The acorn he new he was going to pick since he saw them on the sapling next to him.
Syr Monday September 12th, 2005 2:46:32 AM
The elf looks at the shifter with sorrow and resignation in his eyes, "I'm sorry but if I chose the sleep acorn then someday down the road, another group like ours will watch another orphange collapse. I'm tired and I just want it to end."
That said he switches acorns and chooses 'death'.
Tionel Monday September 12th, 2005 3:55:43 PM
Fingering the sleep acorn, Tionel looks at the others and can't help but feel their negative responses and criticism is pretty well on. But deep inside, past all that worry and self-doubt, Tionel optimistically hopes that things will go right by choosing a happy choice. A choice not of punishment, but of hope. He chooses the ATONE acorn and lets its choice flow out.
Florin Jadenth Monday September 12th, 2005 9:32:49 PM
Florin looks o the others and also Wynn as he speaks directly to him about the forest temple guardian and sighs gently at the thought, "Is hard to forget something like that Wynn, I would of gave my life for all of you in that tree that day and seen the guardian doing much more damage then we were ready for. I do feel bad for the loss of such a beautiful place, however in another thought it was worth it for the bowl was suppose to of gotten rid of the white flowers around the Float, however ues it does raise the question did we have something to do with this also, also did not only we but did those who first set foot on the shore to make that town, were they partly to cause...to many if's for me to cast a death sentence on the Fey King."
Florin looks to the others and sighs softly, "I do not try to sway votes but this is my reasons, my thoughts and this is why I can not just tell the fey king to die. However I thought him sleeping for awhile, till the day atleast all that has been done is possible righted. If nothing else if the Fey king lives maybe he can learn from this, figure a way to help the Wold more...I was once a human and not this elf from a human point a view and most other races we are a seeing is believing type of people so if he showed us some reason to believe in him more then more of you would vote for him to live or sleep."
Florin looks down at the acorn that has the rune of sleep on it yet and nods, "The orphanage was burned because "I" let the remaining anvil hearts survive and leave...a choice made do to my faith and my beliefs but your choices here at this moment also makes me wonder...after that event or even now, if you had the choice to cast one of these acorns at me, would you of chose death? maybe jail time, or my pentence I try to uphold even now. Every man, every creature, every god even has the right to make pentence for things they have done, rather voluntary or not. This is a weight I carry even to this day and I see it sometime in all your comments at times, reminders or jabs at me."
Florin looks to the Fey King for a moment and sighs, "If your punishment or whatever you want to call it is death from the majority of us then I beg you as a man of honor and defender of Domi that you think of all the killing already done by your power being released. You have control of what you do and even in death your actions can speak volumes. You have also made it sound like rather you kill us or not, once the decision is made it is made. If your so powerful then you think on all these things too, try to see from our point of view, try to see all the destruction happening, all the death that has been caused and truely think on how your last moments if it comes to that should be made. If you decide to fight yet then we shall do so and maybe your or our death's depending will be one remembered for a long time but also as I said, remember all the destruction already done....you have some here that would most likely even see your name goes into the pages of history remembered for what happens here. You also must decide, just like we just did, how will you be remembered."
Florin now sigh and goes silent, leaving his speech there and also half wondering why he even said any of that. It was words he had thought a few times through this and through previous things that have happened.
DM George Monday September 12th, 2005 10:26:38 PM
The votes are cast, and the chosen acorn's flare while the others turn to dust. The decision has been made.
The Fey King blurs from form to form...deer, fox, tree, bush, humming bird, elf, satyr, treant...soon shifting so fast that the forms are impossible to tell. He becomes fainter and fainter and a whisper can be heard in each character's ear.
You desired to see my power, let me show you your possiblities...
Each of you receives a different vision, but all the visions occur at the same time.
Wynn sees himself several years older, standing in front of his home, hugging Xenia from behind, watching their children play in a fountain on the gold level. They have 3 beautiful children and all seems well.
Xenia sees herself delivering a baby. The pain is excrutiating. The midwife seems concerned and desperate. The baby is turned the wrong way! Where are those clerics?
Belkior sees himself working in a field hospital. He is desperately trying to save a child who was slashed with a cruel sword. His spells are exhausted and the child is dying in front of his eyes. He knows this war was fought over food. There is much famine and sufferring across the Wold.
Florin is leading Ajax across a long cobbled courtyard. He is concerned because Ajax is thin and underfed. He keeps walking and walking but all he sees is stone and mortar.
Tionel sees himself in the future as a powerful druid. His control of the natural order is immense and 100s of people flock to him to hear his wisdom.
Syr, sees himself as old and withered. His once muscular form is wasted and tired. His speed is gone and his hair grey. He looks upon a bleak and wasted Wold and wonders where he went wrong.
Angus sees himself in a pub showing off for a petty girl. He has grown powerful and stern but a pretty face can still turn his head. He launches a fireball out the window to impress her with his powers, but as it explodes, a figure is lite within its impact. Angus knows the face. It is his baby sister Marget. He watches in torment as the flames consume her flesh.
Lang sees himself bending over Sunshine holding his faithful hound to his bugbear chest. A huge gash has almost cut the dog in half. He is dead, his blood spilled out across the ground. Lang knows that this was done because he wasn't accepted in his current form as a bugbear. Nature is now distrusted and all "Monsters" must die. Sunshine died fighting for his beloved master.
When the characters eyes snap back to the present, the avatar is gone and the Wold seems very quiet.
Wynn Tuesday September 13th, 2005 8:08:45 AM
The bard watches as the avatar flickers out of sight. He steals an awkward glance at Xenia following his vision, wondering what her thoughts are on the matter. Wynn had never really thought much about settling down and had certainly not thought about raising children...
Xenia Tuesday September 13th, 2005 8:47:11 AM
Xenia's back arches, and she draws in a shuddering breath. Her eyes well with tears from a pain beyond the simple pain.
With a swift turn, she grabs up a nearby chair and heaves it in the direction of the door. The sturdy piece of furniture doesn't make it far, but instead, crashes loudly to the floor, breaking the silence, to skid for a few feet and stop.
"Serves you right!!! I shoulda voted you DEAD!!!"
"That's what I mean!" she rants. "It's spite! Sure it's real and it's true. But he showed that on purpose! You BASTARD!!!"
The thin girl doubles over and holds her middle, her womb. For a moment, her lip trembles, then her green eyes steel.
"It's what you do with the choices you're given. There's lots a things that aren't your fault. But when you're given a choice, what you do with it is what makes you that person you are."
Xenia straightens, and brings her breath under control.
"Well he just proved who he is. Didn't he?"
Belkior Tuesday September 13th, 2005 12:24:41 PM
The halfling cleric starts with the vision of him tending to someone injured in a war over food. Belkior thinks to himself, "So, this is what letting Eberyon stay in the Wold would come to. Nature run rampant, causing feast and famine in turn. Making people fight one another for food. It's better that Eberyon die and Nature be held in check."
A suddne though comes to the Healer of Alemi and he hustles back downstairs. Did the Fae King inflict the same twisted visions on the children? If so, he wants to be available to sooth their fears.
Tionel Tuesday September 13th, 2005 12:53:22 PM
At the sound of the others' hysterics, Tionel frowns. His vision was good...well, weird, definitely. People flocking to him... I don't want to be famous, except maybe as a singer, he thinks to himself. Who said I was ever wise? And I prefer the company of an alehouse to that of a forest... Oh, I just don't understand this whole thing, he quietly admits to himself, and decides to forget about it. "Xenia, calm down a little," he smiles and puts a soothing hand on her. "Whatever that was, I don't think it was at all true."
Xenia (2nd Illegal Post) Tuesday September 13th, 2005 1:05:59 PM
The rogue's lips are compressed in anger.
"I don't either," she replies. "But it was mean. It was just mean."
Syr Tuesday September 13th, 2005 4:15:07 PM
Syr shuts his eyes tightly trying to block the vision from his mind. Picturing his aged fragile body, he wonders if that was what the Fey King meant by Elves would be changing...
Shaking the tired feeling off, he turns to the others. "I wonder when we find out how the others voted and what impact it has on us."
He shrugs the feelings of age off and turns to Florin, "Hey, what next? The city seems tilted but stable for the moment. Action or rest?"
Angus Tuesday September 13th, 2005 8:50:28 PM
Angus shudders at the vision that the Fey King shows him. He hopes it is just another ploy by Elbyron and not a reality that will happen in the future.
Either way Angus's mood stays somber.
Lang (ac 22; hp 56/67) & Sunshine (ac 22; hp 47/47) Tuesday September 13th, 2005 9:50:33 PM
Lang comes out of the vision with tears in his eyes. He cannot believe that his choice will lead to Sunshine's death.
He quickly wipes the tears from his eyes and vows to not let his future end up that way.
