Who's Your Daddy?

DM Bob & Carla  d20+6=15 d20+6=12 d20+6=15 d20+6=9
Tuesday August 30th, 2005 11:08:03 PM

The strangers in the boats spook the elves in the party. Any moves away from the party 'round the small camp fire, while Ash and Arm fade into the forest and watch from its shadows. Andrath remains seated by the fire while Lorth and Bralin stand and take up their shields. Villemus, in the guise of a human woodsman retreats, leaving Harvest alone at the water's edge to greet the stangers. Looking back, Villemus catches sight of a closed bracelet upon one slender wrist of the individual in the middle of the furthest boat. A hood and dark cloak obscure the form of the small figure. The others are dark-haired and broad through the shoulders, garbed in travelers gear in simple natural colours. Each wears a protective leather vest studded with metal bits.

"Half a minute if you please!" calls out the man at the front of the first boat as it runs roughly aground. Splashing knee deep into the water, he starts to pull the boat onto the beach. In answer to Bralin he continues, "just folks heading down to Izen." Appraising the little monk in trailing robes he chuckles, showing a gap where one tooth is missing, "well little lady, you the welcoming party?" From the boat, the two other men scan the beach and nearby woods before carefully exiting. The paddlers in the second boat don't say anything, but their eyes look over the party. One of the men points to Ash at the edge of the forest, and the other man laughs. The small huddled figure doesn't move.

Lorth
Wednesday August 31st, 2005 7:49:24 AM

As Bralin has already asked the men what they want, Lorth says nothing. He carefully watches the men who have left their boats however. He attempts to note what they are armed with and what they are paying most attention too.

Harvest  d20+13=22 d20+13=27 d20+11=31
Wednesday August 31st, 2005 8:40:33 AM

Her smile fades into more neutral lines as the men laugh and point at Ashalan Lathanyel. It is the cruelty of men who are confident in their own power.

"I am not a party," Harvest Moon replies, "but if you are peaceable then we welcome you."

The monk's eyes move from one face to the other. Finally, they rest upon the figure still in the middle of the boat.

"Come, sit by the fire. It is small, but brings cheer. We build one no larger than this from respect for the Culverwood."

"You are men of Izen? We have heard much of Izen. Do you know, will the Council of Elders still hear the plea of petitioners?"

While she speaks, her eyes attempt to pierce the mystery of the hooded figure. With the reputation of Izen, the evil of slavery is on her mind. She watches the men carefully, reading their intent.

Any decides to take a different tack, and quickly smiles and unlimbers his lute. He strums a few chords and smiles at the approaching group (diplomacy 18),
"Indeed, welcome to our humble camp. Hot drink and a warm fire for the weary travelers, and perhaps a song or two to lighten your spirits after what looks to have been a hard day upon the water. Or mayhap, a sweet ballad to calm a troubled spirit."

Any welcomes the party, but does not close the distance between them, and has the words to a particular song in his mind if things do not remain peaceful (Blur).

Arminas sees the men point into the woods and laugh.

They must see Ash, now they know there are elves hiding.

Arminas decides that he must move, as quietly as possible futher from Ash if he is to have any luck at surprising the men. Hopefully it won't come to that, but this doesn't look good. He moves slowly, keeping to the shadows and inches his way (half speed = 15 feet) upstream as close as possible to the rivers edge while staying hidden.

Seeing that the time for hiding is well passed, Ash extricates himself from the underbrush as gracefully as posible, being careful not to let his eyes wander to the hiding spots of his companions lest he give them away.

We still cannot be sure if they mean us harm... let us not jump to conclusions.

"Yes Any, a song would do wonders for our spirit. I may have some extra rations for us to share beside the fire."

Ash squats easily beside his pack and fishes around inside the beaten leather, grabbing both some extra rations, and a potion of Magic Fang.

Just in case...

Bralin
Wednesday August 31st, 2005 8:30:07 PM

Bralin says nothing. Harvest, Ash, and Any have committed to a peaceful path. Mayhap too soon.

Like Lorth, the dwarf remains unconvinced of the intruders intentions. He moves a bit to allow the newcomers access to the fire. Coincidentally, the move also gives both himself and the paladin room to swing.

Andrath
Wednesday August 31st, 2005 11:28:22 PM

The elf keeps his head down, eyes on the fire, hoping his nondescript hood hides his elvish features.

DM Bob & Carla
Wednesday August 31st, 2005 11:28:55 PM

The Swords of Light and the newcomers dance warily around each other as the early shadows of evening settle on the valley. "Har! Har!" laughs the first man out of the boats, as Ash moves discretely from the forest and kneels by the campfire. "Gone to see a man about a horse! Eh?" He turns towards his friends, his hands low in front of his body and makes a coarse gesture. "A hot drink and some grub would be welcomed. Dens! Bring the rum!" Lorth and Bralin stand by stiffly, unwilling to give an inch

As the other two men from the first boat approach the camp, the second boat pulls into shore in front of Any. Villemus and Arm, unseen at the edge of the forest have the bard's back. After the second boat is beached, the man who pulled it ashore returns to collect the small individual in the cloak who has risen gracefully to an upright position. Slender arms reach out to grasp the man around the neck, as he stoops and tenderly catches up his burden. Harvest and Arminas Highlight to display spoiler: {note rows of indigo script from wrist to elbow, tattooed on pale skin, as the voluminous sleeves fall back. They also note a closed bracelet upon one wrist.} The hood slides back revealing a small delicate face pale as moonlight framed by sheets of hair the colour of a raven's plumage. Large violet eyes stare at Any, then Harvest Moon.

Call it woman's intuition, but Harvest gets the distinct impression that something is going on , and it isn't good.

"You guys seen this?" asks the man returning from the first boat, rum bottle in hand, and piece of paper in the other. He thrusts the parchment towards the brown monk.

*********************

By the will of the mighty Parnoth, ruler of the Emerald Kingdom and Dragon of Ancient Rank, it is forthwith decreed and made into law that any of elven blood must heretofore carry upon their person legitimate authentification that they are either citizens of an alien land or legally the property of an Emerald Kingdom non-elf, otherwise said elven-blooded individual shall be declared to be in violation of this law and shall immediately become the property of Parnoth.

Legitimate authentification includes: birth certificates (duly sealed by the officials of the alien country); citizenship papers (likewise sealed); and the wearing of a closed bracelet upon one wrist of the individual--said bracelet bearing the seal of his or her owner.

Anyone of elven blood not bearing any of the above, or found to be bearing falsified authentification shall immediately be seized and become chattel of Parnoth, to be cuffed with Parnoth's own seal without hesitation.

So it is decreed from this day forth! Hail the mighty Parnoth, terrible and benevolent! May he reign over the Emerald Kingdom forever!

Her arms hang loose by her sides. She stands in readiness.

"We have seen that, yes," Harvest Moon says in reply, "and we have heard much of it as well."

"But to my understanding, this land is not yet Izen. Do you mean to tell me that you carry this paper because you yourself are hunters of this bounty upon the life of living beings? If that is so, I would ask that you relinquish this pursuit and work, rather to help restore the many elves displaced from their homes in the Culverwood by Parnoth's aggression."

"It is wrong to hunt persons for no reason other than being elven. Such hunters of bounty gold are not welcome here."

Beneath the strains of accompanying music, Harvest Moon's voice is low and clear, "Explain your business in these woods, please."

Any seeing that Harvest is not going to allow his attempts to lighten the mood carry forward, continues to move while strumming lightly on his lute. Still smiling, he positions himself so that none of the group coming ashore is behind him, then replaces his lute, keeping his hands free. He is contemplating a new song now if these men show they are enemies, as they have yet to openly declare themselves. If they are slavers, he must be ready (hideous laughter).

Letting out a low chuckle Ash addresses the man.

"Yes, we have heard tale of the mighty Parnoth's decree. Good thing I'm not of elven blood eh?"

Giving the man a shrewd look Ash continues in a low conspiritorial voice. "To tell you the truth friend, I am the half-blood spawn of Parnoth himself. The tension is palpable as words are chosen carefully in an attempt at casualness and neutrality. Bralin, and Any prepare in silence while Arm remains hidden. Nearby Villemus utters words of magic as he gestures.

"I am Drosera," the pale skinned elf states as she turns her head slightly, as if hearing something. A tiny phosphorescent crystal rod slides from her sleeve into her hand. The elf gestures elegantly as she continues, displaying the closed bracelet about her wrist. "As you see, I wear the cuff that identifies me as belonging to another." With weaving movements she reaches out in the bard's direction, "See. It bears the the sign of Parnoth. Placed on my wrist by The Great One himself." In soothing tones she continues, "Were it not for Taxo and his men, I would still be locked behind the walls of the serpent's palace house." The raven-haired elf smiles a tiny smile, "You are right to be careful. You never know who you can trust these days." (Bluff=19)

"It is impolite, and very dangerous to use unknown magic in the company of those you do not know. Out of respect, I will ask you, what is the spell that you just used. Then I will ask you once again, what is your business within the Culverwood."

Detect Magic:
1st Round: Presence or absence of magical auras.
2nd Round: Number of different magical auras and the power of the most potent aura.
3rd Round: The strength and location of each aura. If the items or creatures bearing the auras are in line of sight, you can make Spellcraft skill checks to determine the school of magic involved in each. (Make one check per aura; DC 15 + spell level, or 15 + half caster level for a nonspell effect.)
Magical areas, multiple types of magic, or strong local magical emanations may distort or conceal weaker auras.
Aura Strength: An aurafs power depends on a spellfs functioning spell level or an itemfs caster level. If an aura falls into more than one category, detect magic indicates the stronger of the two.

Any sees this 'Drosera' draw the wand, and the swirling colors emanating from it. With great effort of will (Will save 15- I think that means I saved, barely) he shakes off the affect of the spell, and thinks of the words of Ashalan. He was quite persuasive in his bluff, perhaps these are not enemies of the elves, but enemies of Parnoth. He still keeps his hands near to his darts, but does not draw them yet.

"Durm. Your welcome is revoked. Remove your weapons and ye may stay, else ye must leave."
Bralin slowly scans the faces of the men in front of him [T2, T3, and T4]. There is no doubt he's quite prepared to move directly to the unspoken option #3.

Villemus continues to search for magical effects on the group of newcomers. A single faint aura emanates from a belt pouch on each of the men. The female has a number of faint auras emanating from various parts of her person, including her forearms, inside her cloak, and from several small pouches at her waist. Any and Villemus shake off the effects of the swirling lights and Any seeks a peaceful resolution to the impasse. Arminus is less fortunate. Unknowingly caught up in the spell cast in the half drow's direction he succumbs to the luminous display in his hiding place at the edge of the forest.

Bralin and Harvest detect a level of insincerity about Drosera and the monk accuses the she-elf of casting a spell. Bralin steps forward and brandishes his weapons, demanding that his opponents drop theirs, and Lorth calls for his steed. They remain unaware of the subtle display of lights going on behind them as they focus their attention on Drosera and her companions. Andrath remains alone at the fire.

Drosera steps back under the verbal onslaught of the monk and her companions. "You accuse me unfairly" she cries. "I have done no harm. It was your friend in the trees who cast his spell upon us first! Do you think this a weapon?" Drosera tosses a small rod-shaped phosphorescent crystal at Harvest's feet. "See for yourself, a harmless crystal."

Reacting to the tension of the situation, the armed men draw close around Drosera, free their weapons, and take up defensive postures. She in turn utters an incantation from behind her guardians.

"We come without malice, warn you of the dangers to all of elven blood, and you turn on us?!" are Drosera's last words. (Bluff=16)

Then the woman speaks an incantation, and Harvest reciprocates with a trigger word even as she attempts to identify the spell that was cast. She touches the wand to herself and is sheathed in invisible armor. Thrusting the wand into her rope belt, Harvest frees her hands.

Tensions rise to a peak as defensive spells are cast by Villemus and Harvest. Any throws a dart at Drosera but it's flight path is interrupted by an invisible force before it can reach the female half-elf, confirming Andrath's suspicion that she has cast some kind of shield spell on herself.

Lorth senses a presence behind him. His suspicions are confirmed by a huff of warm breath on his neck and a snort, as the heavy war horse shakes its head, waiting for the paladin's directions.

"Who attacks who" she spits at Bralin and Harvest, all sense of decorum now lost. She pulls a small stick from beneath her cloak and touches one of the fighters (T4) in front of her. The man immediately grows to twice his former height and then positions himself between Any and his mistress. He swings at the bard with his longsword, striking him across the arm and shoulder [Hit AC=22 for 13 dmg]

"I will attempt to drive the spell caster further down the beach," Harvest calls out for all to hear. "They will split their forces, or they will withdraw and leave their boats!"

With those words, she draws a scroll. With a flick of her wrist, it comes unrolled. The writing evaporates, leaving the scroll as she reads. The magic lifts and surges in the direction in which the small brown girl points, creating a magical area of Silence around the prow of one of the boats.

"You. Go." Harvest Moon locks eyes with Drosera. The Dragon Marked elf from Izen may not be able to hear the words, but the meaning can be nothing but clear. The monk then steps five feet toward the tree line, toward the northwest.

Lorth settles himself on Tobiasz and guides the animal into position while he readies his weapons. [OOC remember that riding bareback incurs a -5 penalty and Lorth has not equipped his horse, therefore failure is still an option].

Ashalan draws a vial from his pouch and downs the content. A small drop dribbles down his chin as he consumes the potion with great haste.

Any staggers back towards the woods and calls his steed. [OOC moving more than 5' and casting a spell would have incurred an attack of opportunity; therefore I went with your second option of defending yourself.] Moonshadow responds to the call of his name and trots over to the bard. [Any can now retrieve his bow and quiver -- a move equivalent action].

Arminus remains out of sight and 'out of mind'!

Villemus casts a spell in the direction of the enlarged human and is chagrined to see that the man does not heed his command to flee, although he does seem a bit disconcerted that a woodsman is casting spells his way [Will Save =18].

Bralin swings his axe at T3 who neatly deflects the blow and stabs at the dwarf in reply [Hit AC=16]. T2 also continues his attack on the dwarf by tumbling into a flanking position before slashing at the cleric from behind. [Tumble =21, Hit AC=23 for 7+1=8 dmg.]

Harvest unfurls her scroll and attracts the attention of Drosera's enlarged friend as she attempts to read what is transcribed upon it. T4's sword cuts across her cheek as she reads [Hit AC=25 , for 10 Dmg; enlarged fighter has 10' reach, take 10 on concentration check fails vs DC 10 + 10 damage + spell level(2) = 22; The sleep scroll fails during activation]. The enlarged fighter presses forward with yet another attack on the diminuitive monk as she backs away, but swings wide [Hit AC=14].

T1 and T5 continue to defend Drosera, moving with her as she moves towards the southern boat. She scans her surroundings, for immediate danger and then utters an arcane phrase and points her outstretched arms at the mounted paladin. A faint quivering ray of air rushes at Lorth striking him. The sturdy paladin can feel the strength fleeing his body under the assault [Ray of enfeeblement for -5 points of strength for 5 minutes].

He looks for his friend Arminas (spot 7)who went into the woods also, but does not see him. (any chance of stepping on him :0))

Any is still not sure if he is fighting an enemy, or if this is a huge misunderstanding brought on by the parties attempts to be cautious, but it will not matter if they are all dead. He looks to the huge fighter for a target of his next shot.

Ash, trying to get to the elven mage, circles around in the direction of her and her protectors, keeping in a full defensive stance and making sure to stand out of range.

Misjudging the reach of an opponent again. Harvest Moon grits her teeth against the painful lesson. More painful still is the loss of her spell.

The dwarf recovers his errant swing. With the withdrawal of Harvest, all four warriors could attack him. Only two do, which Bralin considers an error on their part.

Now, with Lorth approaching, the tide turns again.

Bralin is about to move out of the flank, when Andrath arrives. The risk of being flanked himself is outweighed by the chance to eliminate an opponent. Still the warrior takes up a more defensive posture before attacking.

His axe whistles toward T2.

Lorth charges Tobiasz at Drosera. T1 swings at the horse as it slips by [Hit AC=17] but misses and the paladin and his steed exact a heavy price from the mage, striking her twice.

Time slows for Any as the bard shoots through the tangle of bodies between himself and Drosera. The arrow somehow finds it's target and pierces the mage's defences. [OOC Nat 20 hits, but Any fired into melee and should take -4 on atk roll as well as additional minuses to fire through T4(enlarged) and T3].

Ashalan circles the fracas on the beach and positions himself behind Drosera.

Harvest withdraws and turns invisible, giving meaning to the saying that discretion is the better part of valour.

Arminus continues to commune with the swirling lights, totally oblivious to the chaos around him.

Andrath sneaks in behind T2 and deals a massive blow to his opponent, who is staggered by the wound and then finished by Bralin's axe.

T1 swings again at Lorth and misses badly [Hit AC=14]. Drosera activates her wand and enlarges T5 who immediately grows to a towering height and lashes out at the paladin atop his horse [Hit AC=25 for 8 HP]. She then clambers aboard the beached boat to evade the mounted paladin and his horse.

Unable to locate Harvest Moon, T4 shifts behind the dwarf and brings his longsword crashing down on the cleric [Hit AC=25 for 14+3=17 HP]. T3 also attacks the dwarf who is now surrounded on three sides. [Hit AC=25 for 9 HP]

Failure means it can't move that round (and must then make a Reflex save or fall), while failure by 5 or more means it falls (see the Balance skill for details).

Silent as a ghost, Harvest Moon moves untouched, straight through the middle of the melee, proving that valor has very little to do with tactics. As she passes Bralin Stoneminder, she draws her spiked chain. It will be useful to control things once she is where she wishes to be.

With a quick leap, the little monk clears the water and lands in the boat, behind the elven Dorsera. The boat rocks with the addition of invisible weight. In a flash, Harvest Moon once again becomes visible as her foot lashes out, catching the elf in the temple.

"Do not slay her, Paladin Lorth," she calls out, even as she prepares for the onslaught of the guardsmen which must surely follow.

"Stand down!!!" Harvest Moon's voice rings out. "Stand down!!! We have your charge!!! We are true to our word. We mean you no harm. Stand down!!!"

In the heat of battle plans can change quickly.

Seeing Harvest appear behind the elven mage, who has her hands full with Lorth's vicious attacks, Ash hopes the monk has things well in hand, for it appears that Bralin may need some assistance.

He then drops his bow and quiver behind the tree and steps to his right to further protect himself from attack while he sings a spell of CMW to heal himself. Then, he draws his sword and dagger to enagage the enemy man to man.
OOC--This will be his first action next round, and I will roll those numbers then.

Any hears Harvest call for a cessation of hostilities, and tho' he agrees with the logic and sentiment, he thinks this may already have gone too far for tempers to be quelled, and peace to reign. He will note the reactions of the river group before he acts.

Villemus cast grease at T3 who neatly avoids the spell and steps to one side. [Ref=22, A slick now covers four squares in columns F&G and rows 11 & 12].

Lorth jumps down from Tobiasz, avoids the slashing longsword of T5 [AoO hits AC=14] but feels the sharp sting of T1's blade as it rips across his arm [AoO Hit AC=25/26 confirmed critical for 7+2=9 HP]. The paladin ignores the two men, leaps into the boat and attacks Drosera, felling her with his longsword. The steed attacks T5 wounding the enlarged man with it's hoof [I'm not sure that Lorth can actually command the animal to attack when he is not riding it -- needs research on my part -- but T5 is threatening and Tobiasz would likely react].

Harvest winds her way through the battle zone, avoiding the slick, and is able to jump into the boat alongside Drosera. She remains invisible. [OOC Harvest moved 40+ feet and jumped into the boat in this round].

Ashalan attempts to attack T3 from behind and steps into the grease slick recently cast by Villemus. [Make a reflex save vs DC 15 or fall, otherwise Ash's attack strikes true.]

Any fires upon the enlarged human towering over the dwarf, piercing the man's armor. A small stain of blood begins to spread beneath his armpit. Dropping his bow, the bard moves behind a small tree and prepares to cast a spell. [Draw an arrow, fire, and move is all you can do this round, casting a spell is a standard action.]

Bralin adopts a defensive posture and readies himself for the next attacks that are sure to come his way, while the nearly invisible Arminus continues to watch the swirling lights that dance about his head.

Seeing the commotion at the boat, T3, T1, and T5 all rush the beached craft, weaving to avoid attacks from opportunistic foes [Tumbles = 22 and 19] and assault the Paladin, crying "Mistress Drosera" with the one breath and yelling vulgarities at Lorth with the second. T3 keeps his balance in the process of moving out of the greased area [Ref=16]. T1 and T5 miss [Hit AC=18 and 13] but T3 strikes the paladin hard, opening a large wound in his side [Hit AC=25/20 confirmed critical for 9 HP]. T4 takes yet another swing at the bleeding dwarf who narrowly parries the powerful blow from the enlarged human [Hit AC=23].

[OOC AC of humans is 18 and 16 for enlarged humans]

Lorth AC: 19 HP: 58/32, -5 str, Tobiasz AC: 18 HP: 42/42
Friday September 9th, 2005 7:38:49 AM

[All I could find is that I have an empathic link with Tobiasz and I can give commands. But your call if I can't use him to attack unless riding him, either way let me know.]

Since Lorth has no idea Harvest is in the boat...

Lorth mentally instructs Tobiasz to cease attacking and leave the fray.

He then straddles Drosera (5' move), puts his sword point on her chest and yells, "Stand down, or I will make sure she never rises again. You will back off and I will tend to her wounds. Then you will get in your boats and leave."
If any of Drosera's men make a aggresive move Lorth attacks them if they get in range. With his moral code Lorth would have a hard time actually carrying out his threat, but would Drosera's men risk the death of their charge? He takes the gamble.

"Drosera will live, Paladin Lorth." It is the voice of Harvest Moon. "I go now to heal Bralin Stoneminder."

Sliding past Lorth, the invisible girl leaps off the boat and quietly into the sand. Monday September 12th, 2005 7:44:45 AM

The battle on the beach continues in confusion. T4 feels the sharp pain of a blade penetrating his side as Andrath drives his sword in from behind. Seconds later T4 is hit again by Villemus' ray and he feels his strength wane. Bralin continues to defend himself as best he can.

Arminus finally shakes off the effect of the swirling lights and finds himself sitting in the bushes, wrapped in his cloak.

Harvest remains invisible and stabilizes the fallen sorceress in the bottom of the boat. The female half-elf 's shallow breathing improves and the flow of blood from her injuries slows. Lorth stands over Drosera and threatens to dispatch her with his longsword if the men on shore do not lay down their weapons. Few actually believe the paladin who's voice goes up an octave as he tries to bluff his opponents [OOC Lorth should have rolled a bluff]. Harvest slides through the fracas unseen and applies her healing magic to the battered dwarf.

T5 is about to spring onto the boat in defense of his leader when he is struck by Ashalan's blow to the neck. His nerves fire uncontrollably and he drops to his knees, unable to command his own body [Fort save = 12].

Drosera's men lower their weapons as they realize the battle is lost. T3 rushes to Drosera's side [Fort save vs stunning fist=18] and cradles her head in his hands.

T1 calls out "Stop! We yield!"

If Bralin accepts this, Any will again begin to sing a song of healing (CMW 13 hp), lightly touching the Dwarf around his wounds as he does so, guiding his song to where it is needed most.

"We are true to our word. We mean you no harm. And I will tend to your Dorsera."

There is the soft sound of links as the little monk coils her spiked chain.

Lorth releaves Drosera of any wands she has in her hands or that are easily accessable. Then he moves to the closest downed man and checks for a pulse, if the man is alive he stabilizes him by expending a point of lay on hands.

Arminas (AC 21, HP 25/25)
Monday September 12th, 2005 4:08:07 PM

Arminas awakes from his hypnotic trance, the colors fade quickly. What had once been beautiful is now gone. At first, he is annoyed.

Where did the colors go?

Then slowly, it dawns on him that he was under a spell, and now he is truely upset. The words of Lorth ring in his ears:

"Then you will get in your boats and leave."

This brings Arminas to full alert, and his time of hiding is now over. Leaping from the trees he calls out:

"Hold, do not let them take to the boats. They will report us, and we will have many seeking gold for our freedom."

Gesturing at the new group, Arminas adds:

"I will fill the first one who steps onto the boats with arrows, truce or not."

Looking at the Swords of Light, he remarks:

"Forgive me for not helping in the battle. I remember them reading a declaration, and then colors of lights. Remarkable lights. Anyway, it appears that you fought valiently. But we cannot let them escape down river, and I suppose you don't want to kill those who surrender. So what do you plan on doing with them?"

Ashalan (AC 18, HP 22/22)

Bralin (ac21, 21/52 hp, divine favor 7/10)
Monday September 12th, 2005 8:36:03 PM

Bralin feels his wounds close, though no one is about. He shrugs it off. One of his comrades no doubt.

Then the foe yields, and Any calls for him to come over with healing. Bralin warily moves toward the elf, but first stops over the downed warrior [T2]. If he still breathes, the dwarf casts a spell to stabilize him (Cure Minor Wounds over Light).

"Arminas is right; none of these can leave until we can determine their entire intent. Lorth, can you scan them to see if they are evil at heart? That is the first part of what we need to know."

Then the elf turns to the boaters and asks, "Now, why are you travelling along the river? Are you slavers, trying to capture elves? You, answer me," he says to one of the surviving boaters. [OOC: Sense motive check of 20.]

DM Bob & Carla  d8+1=7
Monday September 12th, 2005 10:54:58 PM

Weapons are collected, the injured either healed or stabilized, and the questioning begun. Villemus and Arminus stand ready while Harvest speaks of a peaceful resolution. Bralin and the others determine that none of their adversaries has passed over to Gargul, although several are sorely wounded and remain unconscious. T3 retrieves a vial from his vest and pours the contents down Drosera's throat. The sorceress sputters and coughs as she regains consciousness in his arms.

"Leave her be" T5 struggles to regain control of his enlarged frame. "You cannot imagine how she suffers." He moves clumsily towards the paladin in the boat. "Leave her or face me" he growls, clenching his fists. "Stand down Thu" she replies weakly. "What is done is done. It was only a matter of time..."

Andrath begins to realize just how devoted the men are to the delicate elven sorceress. He also picks up something of Drosera's inner conflict by the expressions that flit across her face and the anguished tone of her voice.

There is a soft splash of water, and brown girl appears at Dorsera's side as the spell is dismissed.

"Come, please, sit by the fire. We will tend to your wounds." She reaches out to help the elven sorceress from the boat. "The sand is soft. You can rest and tell us your tale at your leisure."

"Why did you attack us? Are you slavers, or is this your way of greeting strangers? " (Sense motive- 19, gather information 24)

Any then places himself with his lute at the ready so that there is at least one member of his group between himself and these strangers, to allow time to cast a spell, if one is needed.

Lorth finishes disarming Drosera, ignoring the man's threats.
"I am only making sure she is not armed. I could of killed her if I wished, I didn't.", he says flatly.

Lorth then takes his time to search their souls for dark intent.

Bralin (ac21, 21/52 hp, divine favor 8/10)
Tuesday September 13th, 2005 12:43:17 PM

Once again, his companions follow an illogical course. Bralin mentally rehashes the chain of events:

Foe told to Leave or Fight
Foe Fights
Foe Yields

The dwarf is certain the next phase is Foe Leaves (with very few weapons and no gold). And yet, Harvest invites her enemy to share her tale.

Bralin reverts to habit when confronted by a situation he doesn't understand. He waits. His axe is at his side, not threatening, but not stowed either.

Arminas (AC 21, HP 25/25)
Tuesday September 13th, 2005 1:01:56 PM

Arminas is less tense now that Andrath has confirmed his stance about letting them leave. Now that the situation seems more under control, Arminas decides that now is a good time to see to it that they cannot easily leave. He gathers the oars and moves them high up on the beach, stacking them in the forest at the edge.

Ashalan
Tuesday September 13th, 2005 4:15:20 PM

Ash waits on the edges of the group. Pleased that cooler heads have prevailed.

He lays the weapons off to one side, and notices with satisfation as Arminas gathers the oars of the boats making a quick escape unlikely.

"Lady, you need to answer our questions, and quickly. You entered our campsite, then cast a spell designed to incapacitate a number of us, without any warning or provocation. You had better explain yourself fast, or my friend here with the axe may just have to do some convincing for us!"

DM Bob and Carla
Wednesday September 14th, 2005 12:04:52 AM

Harvest Moon helps the female elf from the boat with the assistance of T3 and they make their way towards the fire under the watchful eyes of Villemus and Bralin. Arminus gathers up the oars and places them near the forest's edge while Ashalan nods his head in approval. With a quick escape now impossible, and the enemy disarmed, the questioning can begin in earnest. Lorth probes Drosera and her men but detects no obvious signs of evil within them. However, the metal band around Drosera's wrist does give off a faint aura of evil.

Andrath and Any demand that she explain her actions and those of her men.

Hesitantly at first, and then in a growing torrent, Drosera tells her story, the anguish and turmoil that rack her soul is obvious to all. "I am sorry, you are correct. We did try to enchant your friends, and if successful, we would have tried to overpower you all and take you prisoner. I cannot ask you to forgive us, for I cannot forgive myself. My name is Drosera and I am, or at least I was, a citizen of the Emerald Kingdom. My family ran a large farm where we employed and gave shelter to many of the city's orphans and destitute. All of these men are, or were members of our household. Thu (T5) came to us as an infant, and Dens (T3) joined us after his parents died in a fire. Hik (T4) was born on the farm, his mother was pregnant when she arrived and gave birth soon after. When Parnoth decreed that all those of elven blood were to be enslaved my parents tried to fight off his sheriffs and lackeys but they were taken. Tears stream down her face as she continues. "Parnoth made an example of them. He had them whipped, then hung in the square as a message to others who might resist. My younger sisters and I were forced to watch and then cuffs were placed upon our wrists. No magic I possess can free me of it." She raises a slender wrist to show the silver band that encircles her wrist. "If I do not obey him, the cuff grows smaller." Lorth makes out the seal of Parnoth the Terrible on the silver bracelet. " I have been ordered to find free elves and bring them to Emerald City to be claimed by the Green Dragon. If I fail, my sisters will surely be killed, for he values the lives of his servants little." Turning a tear streaked face to Andrath, she continues "nature has rebelled under his oppression, and he blames the elves and seeks to punish us."

"We will not abandon her" Dens cuts in, "we owe her family our lives." Turning from the party, his whispers hoarsely, "I cannot bear to see her so pained." Thu stands ready to intercede should anyone move on Drosera, but his vision is clouded by tears. He finally manages to speak, "there are rumors that an army is being raised against Parnoth. That elves and non-elves alike are banding together to destroy the evil wyrm. Are you such a band? We have encountered none as powerful as you in our travels. Have you come to lead such an effort?"

Lorth
Wednesday September 14th, 2005 7:22:39 AM

Lorth turns to Andrath, "There is no stain of evil upon them, except for that bracelet Drosera wears."
Lorth waits for the others to figure out what they want to do about Drosera's tale. Obviously she must be helped.

"My friends we have been seeking a way into Parnoth's land undetected and unhindered by harassment from slavers, perhaps we can use Mistress Drosera's band. They are commonly seen bringing in groups of prisoners, perhaps they would be willing to take us as if we were prisoners, and lead us to the council, or what might remain of it." (Diplomacy 26)

"Those within the group who are able to disguise themselves effectivly, could do so and act the part of additions to her group. It is just an idea, what are your thoughts?"

Harvest (HP 24/34)  d20+7=17 d20+3=10
Wednesday September 14th, 2005 10:23:04 AM

Harvest Moon removes the healer's kit from her pouch. The various salves, tinctures, and dressings may not be necessary, but an examination will tell. Harvest speaks of their intent as she examines the severity of the elven sorcerer's wounds.

"Where we are from, there are many elven who have been driven from their homes as a result of Parnoth's campaign. We have come here to do what we can to allow them to return," the little monk explains.

As her examination moves to the elven woman's arms, Harvest Moon studies the bracelet for a moment. The small amount that Harvest knows of Spellcraft may be of use to someone with greater knowledge.

"It may be possible to help by joining this army that is being raised against Parnoth. Then again, we had hoped to meet with the Council of Elders in Emerald City. We understand that there is hope there in resolving this through more peaceful means."

"Perhaps ... " Harvest Moon pauses, leaning back upon her haunches. She turns her eyes to her companions first, as though, in silence, garnering support for an idea she has yet to voice.

"Would it be possible, Dorsera, for you to take us safely into the Emerald City under the pretext that we were captured slave?"

Arminas
Wednesday September 14th, 2005 12:10:27 PM

Arminas looks from Any to Harvest, a look of disbelief in his eyes.

"You would have them 'pretend' to capture us as slaves? Did they not just confess that they were trying to do just that? What makes you think that once we are pretend prisoners, that we will not become real prisoners? Do you not remember Captain Greenblade and the painful lesson learned in Stormwind Castle? Not all elves are to be trusted. Certainly those who have attacked us to take some of us as slaves are the least likely to gain my trust."

Looking about, Arminas looks wary and full of distrust.

"I would take my chances in the forest. We can survive there, that we have proven."

Then with a look into the eyes of Drosera:

"If it were my arm the band was on, I would cut it off rather than submit. Perhaps we could help. Better to have one hand than be a slave and traitor."

Bralin
Wednesday September 14th, 2005 12:18:59 PM

At Lorth's pronouncement, the dwarf puts away his axe, and sets himself to the task of solving the elf's dilemma.

The issue of an evil bracelet on your wrist has a straightforward, albeit painful, solution. Arminas sees it right away, but misses the more difficult question.

"Her kin are hostage," Bralin reminds the elf.

Any and Harvest have also missed a point with their idea.
"Your idea helps us," he comments. "But it will not help her. Have we the means to free her kin?"

Ashalan
Wednesday September 14th, 2005 8:47:54 PM

The she-elf's tale tugs at Ashalan's heart, he who has never known his parents, cannot imagine having them ripped from him.

He wants to help, needs to help, but how?

Ash racks his brain, but cannot think of anything better than the plan already laid out.

"Perhaps there is some way to safeguard against a betrayal?"

Villemus  d20+13=16 d8+1=7
Wednesday September 14th, 2005 11:55:22 PM

Still in the guise of a woodsman, Villemus finally emerged from the woods and scampered over to the wounded elven sorceress. Whispering softly, the drow-woodsman used his enchanted tattoo to heal the sorceress before examining the bracelet.

"We walk the path we walk. Where it leads, who knows? The most obvious route isn't always the best one.", Villemus mused as he smiled at Drosera.

"Maybe this is an opportunity, maybe not. If you had not come by the order of the great dragon, you would not had met us. Fortune or woe, I do not know. But perhap, this meeting is a start."

Glancing at the distant trees, Villemus continued, "Lady, would you tell us the route to the dragon, and the dangers we might face? We will rescue your kindreds if we can."

Harvest examines Drosera's wounds and the bracelet that cuts into her flesh. The wounds from the battle have begun to heal under the magic dispensed by Dens, but the cuffed hand lacks color and feels cold to the touch. Harvest is sure that the woman can travel, but prolonged exertion would not be advised. [OOC Harvest knows that Drosera is at 3 HP] The monk is unable to determine what kind of magic might be at work on the bracelet, while Villemus can only determine that the magic is evil and perhaps a very powerful form of a binding spell, although several auras are evident.

"Your solution has crossed my mind more than once", she replies weakly to Arminus, "but what of my family? I cannot abandon them." Thu rankles at the suggestion that the Swords of Light might cut off his friend's hand. His own hands form into fists and his muscles tense as the conversation takes a bloody turn. It is only when Bralin speaks that he drops his shoulders and uncurls his fingers.

She hears from each member of the Swords of Light and feels ashamed that they would so quickly offer aid. "You cannot take on Parnoth directly" she councils Villemus. "He is an ancient and powerful Dragon capable of great destruction and horrible cruelty. He would simply eat you, or squash you under it's feet." She turns to Harvest "I know of only one in the Council of Elders who might help. He alone may hear a plea from the outside, but he is no longer as trusted by Parnoth or the rest of the council, still, Spalna may help, especially if he knew that those outside this accursed land showed any interest in the plight of the elves."

"We can guide you by the safest path to the outskirts of the city", Drosera offers, "and there point you to the councilor's house. It would be best if we encountered no one for even though we are known to Parnoth's minions, we are not trusted."

Lorth
Thursday September 15th, 2005 9:11:28 AM

Lorth for once totally agrees with Arminas. There is no way he is pretending to be a captive of these people who just tried to kill him. Just allowing them to lead them to the outskirts of the city is something he has issues about. Obviously these people put their family before all, even other innocents, who says they won't betray the Swords of Light again, when the chance comes.

"Perhaps you could just draw us a map and explain the way.", he comments.

Any  d20+5=25 d20+4=13 d20+2=7

Any listens carefully to Drosera's announcement to lead the group to the outskirts of the city(Sense motive 25). He agrees with the comments made by his fellows, and if they choose to leave their former attackers, he wonders how they can insure their silence. He poses the question,

"I suggested that they take us in the appearance of prisoners, because I was not sure if we dared to leave them free to report to Parnoth that a band who opposes his wishes is abroad in his land. What are we to do to insure their silence on this matter if they simply draw us a map and leave?"

Any strums lightly on his lute as he awaits the response and advice of the others, cautiously eyeing the foliage and surrounding area for other signs of trouble (spot 13, listen 7 Wonderful rolls).

Harvest (HP 24/34)  d8+1=6
Thursday September 15th, 2005 11:00:06 AM

"Thank you, Villemus Bralfah," Harvest Moon inclines her head to the wild drow as he scampers down the bank to heal the elven sorceress.

She herself places a hand upon Dorsera's brow. Lifting the rough knot of wood at her hip, Harvest directs a healing light through her fingers and into her charge.

"We must not abandon faith, Arminas Calaelen," the little monk says to her companion as she works. "to do so, is to make an enemy of your intuition. It is to war within yourself, Arminas Calaelen."

The sound of her own voice gives pause to Harvest Moon, so much the voice of Pasix Mixmindor that she feels the empty space where he no longer is. And yet, at the same time, comes the realization that he is still with her, carried within her in his teachings.

"True, one must face each moment with a flexibility tempered by one's experience. But one must realize that there is a self that goes beyond this body of experience. This self grows and learns as does a child. If we listen only to the voice of pain, then what lessons are we teaching to ourselves?"

"I think Anthos Westar is correct," Harvest Moon continues to all. "Dorsera," she takes the elf's hand in hers, "you should accompany us even to the home of Councilor Spalna. He may be able to provide succor to you and your family. Regardless, all questions of trust aside, I am afraid that we cannot allow you to continue hunting for elves, as you are compelled by this bracelet to do."

Arminas
Thursday September 15th, 2005 5:03:02 PM

Surprised that both Lorth and Bralin agree with at least some of his words, Arminas seems to relax. He calls Erwen down from his perch high in the tree to sit beside him on a fallen tree. He runs his fingers through the eagle's feathers, smoothing them and picking out and discarding any parasites that are found. The action seems to further calm the elf, who is soon back to his old self.

As Harvest speaks, Arminas listens as one would to an elder, even though the monk is young and would be considered a child in the elven culture. The admiration that he feels towards Harvest cannot be hidden.

"Yes, you are right. Bitterness has invaded my soul, I cannot easily forget the treachery of Greenblade. She has colored my vision with doubt. Yet Drosera acted the same, seeking to enslave me and my people. How can I trust so quickly? A few minutes ago I was under her spell, and had not the Swords of Light been victorious in battle than I would be captured as a slave."

With a pained look and a sigh, he continues:
"I wish I could trust so easily, and forget the recent treachery of elves. Yet I have learned not all deserve trust. However, if Drosera and her men can lead us by a safe and private path, then I would be agreeable. We will not act as slaves though. I will hold my weapons, and they can gain their weapons back after we obtain safe passage. How does that sound?"

Bralin
Thursday September 15th, 2005 8:42:03 PM

The dwarf nods in agreement with Any and Arminas. The irony of this action isn't lost on Bralin, but he shows no outward emotion.

"We have proven victorious," he cousels Lorth and Andrath. "We are safer with them close at hand."

Andrath
Thursday September 15th, 2005 10:22:27 PM

"I agree with Arminas. We go freely, or we don't go at all. We will be armed, and we can carry their arms as well, ready to turn them back over if we feel that the time is right. But as we get ready to travel, you need to tell us more about a couple of things. First of all, how exactly does your bracelet work? You say that the bracelet tightens if you don't do what Parnoth wants. How do you think that the bracelet will react if you lead us back to the Emerald Kingdom, and stop capturing elves? Secondly, what more can you tell us about Spalna? Who is he or she, and why would that person stand a chance against Parnoth?"

Listening to what the lady elf has to say, Andrath starts to pack up camp, and get ready to move.

DM Bob & Carla
Friday September 16th, 2005 12:01:02 AM

Arminus piles the weapons neatly and stands guard over them. Any senses the she-elf's desperation at the hopelessness of her situation and knows she is telling the truth as she knows it. The bard doesn't see much in the gloaming and the crackle of the fire is all he hears.

Drosera clasps the tight cuff about her wrist and twists it painfully, then looks at Andrath. "If I return with nothing to show, he will...just do it. If I understood his magic, maybe I could undo it myself."

Holding his hands out at his sides, palms facing out to show they are empty Dens moves past the rogue to Drosera where she sits by the fire, one hand held captive in Harvest's own small ones. The young male speaks in her ear for a moment, and when the sorceress nods he stands up and steps back.

"We can not draw you a map of the paths in the woods or even the streams and rivers for they are magic and ever changing," the she-elf says addressing Lorth. "However," she continues, "Dens suggests a plan that may allay your fears and perhaps postpone my fate...at least for a little while," announces the raven haired she-elf. "Taxo," Drosera nods at the man Harvest first encountered on the beach, "Taxo will take Hetz, Hik, and Tom and strike out for the north east and the Peaseblossom River. We have heard rumors of an army of Fey that are gathering somewhere in the forest west of the Red Hills. It is said that the forest rallies and the Templars of the Wild are forming an army to follow the king. The king loves elves. He was once an elf. He will crush the Green One, Parnoth Faebane!" Drosera's pale face flushes red as if with fever. "They will join under the banner of the Fey King and fight for the destruction of Parnoth and the freedom of the Emerald Kingdom."

"I will take you to the councilor's house. Dens and Thu will help with the boats. We will follow the river as far as the Tree of Parting, and then we will travel west by foot to The Emerald City."

The glow from the small fire casts its light on the faces of those assembled about it as the cool darkness of the night air presses upon the group.

The Fey King ...

Harvest Moon feels the presence of the three acorns within her pouch as Dorsera speaks of The King. REFORM. SLEEP. DIE.

The dream plays again through her mind.

Arms stretched out as vines entwine the satyr's form, flowers turn their faces adoringly, beasts of the forest crawl, bellies low to the ground to grovel at the feet of the horned one with the legs of a goat.

... a wagon full to brimming brings relief to hungry children ... a cottage choked in vines ... a cow is delivers a third gangly calf ... flooding as citizens run through the streets with gigantic wolves close on their heels ... a volcano erupting ... a floating city tilted at an angle as vines wrap around its upper level ... Thadius and Thalpius, goat legs and horns distorted and out of proportion ...

"Ebyron ... my husband ... my king ... King of the Fey ... lifetimes ago you were put to sleep ... too unpredictable ... too chaotic ... dangerous ... "

"Maab, my dear queen! See how nature loves me?! See how it celebrates my return? My awakening, willed by the song of elves? I am reborn! You have had your chance to rule, but now I reclaim my throne!"

These elves, they rely upon this Fey King.

Harvest Moon says nothing of the dream. Instead, she asks, "The bracelet, then, does not know when you have disobeyed, Dorsera? It is Parnoth who must command the bracelet to grow smaller? That would provide us with some measure of comfort, to know that you do not injure yourself while aiding us."

She releases the elf's pale white hand, gently placing it upon her lap. "It may not be wise to send four of your guards away, Dorsera. Though that may be a decision best made in the light of morning."

"I will stand last watch with you, Anthos Westar," Harvest volunteers.

Before retiring, Harvest Moon once again makes the rounds of her elven companions. To each, as she has the nights before, she gives some small magic that may fortify them against worry and allow restful sleep.

Paying a little more attention to the time, Andrath says, "Thank you for the gentle reminder that we all need our rest. Sometimes, I am a little quick to react, and I can see fine at night. However, a good night's sleep and a recharge of spells is a good idea. We have a normal watch order; we can still use it. Drocera, your men can either rest tonight or join in with our watches."

He prepares his bedroll, and gets ready to take the first watch.

The Swords of Light set camp and prepare to stay the night at the beach. Andrath proposes the standard set of watches and Drosera's men agree to take watches along with the party members. [OOC not sure what the standard set of watches are anymore - Andrath / Lorth, Bralin / Ashalan, Arminus / Villemus, Any / Harvest - ]

Any, Arminus and Bones go in search of food and bring back sufficient supplies for all.

Drosera tries to further explain the bracelet to Harvest while they eat, "You are right, the bracelet itself knows nothing, but Parnoth can watch from a distance. Much is happening in his realm and his eyes cannot be everywhere, but one never really knows when he watches and when he doesn't."

Prior to settling in for the night, Harvest expends her spells on the party members.

The night passes uneventfully. Drosera's men stand watch in turn but none speak very much as each is preoccupied with their own thoughts. Drosera's sleep is interrupted by whatever internal demons consume her as she tosses and turns in her bedroll.

Harvest (HP 30/34)
Monday September 19th, 2005 9:50:09 AM

Harvest Moon kneels in the sand by the laugh and chatter of the river, running ceaselessly on its way to far and unknown places. Again, she contemplates the knot of wood. Her fingers are no longer certain of the shape that lies within. The clear sense that within this gnarled root is an Eye is now lost. She holds it up to the morning light, but the shape within remains gray and formless.

And yet still, Gargul gives his blessings.

Harvest returns to the cold fire. "How was your sleep, Dorsera?" she inquires. To each of the elves and those of elven blood, she asks the same. It seems hard for them. Though they all, truly, accept the same risks by walking this path. Slavery and death. Two specters not unknown in the Contested Kingdoms. It is not rational, but Harvest Moon fears more for the others than for herself.

"Today, we travel by boat then," she says over a cold breakfast, "to the Tree of Parting." Harvest eyes the sleek curves of the boats. "I look forward to traveling by boat," she says.

Using the Rabbits brought in by Arminas, and some of the roots and tubers that he has gathered, Any begins breakfast in time for it to be ready as the sun rises. Thanks to Harvest, Any has had a decent nights sleep (Will save 22+1 from Harvest's spell)and feels much refreshed.

While the others are waking and eating, he cleans and checks his gear, stows it away, and begins to sing,

"The Sun, She rises from the mist,
the clouds all scatter from our
midst..."

Arminas
Monday September 19th, 2005 2:16:26 PM

Arminas finishes his watch high in the tree overlooking the group. Once he sees that Any, Harvest and Villemus are up taking the last watch, he settles into the crook of the tree next to Erwen. Gently smoothing the feathers of the great bird, Arminas concentrates on preparation for the new day.

Looking at the great bird, he quietly speaks to it.

It may be important for us to speak this day. You will be my eyes while we are on the river. I do not like to be so vulnerable. The forest offers better protection, yet they seem intent to go by boat.

After preparing his spells for the new day, Arminas gives a signal for Erwen to go hunt for his breakfast. Arminas then slips off the tree branch and slowly drifts to the ground. When he lands, he walks over to the fire where rabbit and tubers are cooking.

"A song and a meal, I think I will keep you around."

Harvest's concern for the elves does not go unnoticed.

"My thoughts and dreams are plagued by images of Parnoth and his slaves, yet I need to move forward. I am but one small part of this. The children and families that you helped are what I remember most. Besides, it appears that the device can be removed by cutting at the elbow. Which I would like your promise to do rather than let me live as a slave."

Eventually, Arminas gathers the oars and returns them to the boats. Greeting Lorth in the morning, Arminas can't help but remind him of the day at Magpie Crossing.

"Remember that the armor you wear makes you sink, it would be difficult to find you at the bottom of such a large river."

Ashalan
Monday September 19th, 2005 7:30:11 PM

Taking this time of rest for his own personal reflection, Ashalan withdrawals himself from the group to meditate in communion with Alemi.

Several long hours into his deep, trancelike meditation, small sparks of light begin to dance around his head, creating a soft glow on Ash's silvery mane.

Strangely enough, the monk of Alemi is in such deep mediation that he does not seem to notice the magical manifestations as they circle his head.

Bralin
Monday September 19th, 2005 9:38:25 PM

Come the morn, Bralin meditates on the Orb.

The dwarf then rips through whatever breakfast is offered, and awaits Andrath's command.

DM Bob & Carla
Tuesday September 20th, 2005 1:08:53 AM

In the morning, Arminus confides his fears to the small monk and Any sings to cheer himself as he readies the boats. Lorth , Ash and Bralin prepare for the day ahead, each in his own way while the mysterious Villemus and the normally quick Andrath sleep in. The elves enjoyed a restorative sleep, thanks in part to Harvest Moon's ministrations.

Drosera, washes her face and hands at the waters edge, then combs her long straight hair. Dark shadows under her eyes stand in contrast against her pale skin. Gesturing in the direction of her men standing awkwardly on the beach, she asks, "will you let my men go? Taxo and the others?" The sorceress pauses before continuing, "they will need their weapons." She waves her hand at the pile of equipment assembled by Ashalan and Lorth (5 uncommonly well made longswords, 5 fine daggers, 5 bucklers, a wand, some elegant and well balanced darts, a half dozen vials containing various colored liquids.)

"You can keep my things, and those of Dens and Thu since we will be going with you, however please let the others have their gear. If they are going to join the Templars of the Wild, they will need their weapons." A dark look crosses the faces of the two men mentioned, but other than flashing eyes and clenched fists, the men make no moves.

Villemus
Tuesday September 20th, 2005 1:29:08 AM

Raising his hands, Villemus gave a shrug, "I am no highwayman.", before walking off to a corner to prepare his spells for the day.

Lorth
Tuesday September 20th, 2005 9:02:47 AM

Lorth does not wear his chainmail this day, since they will be traveling by boat. He gingerly climbs into one of the boats and stowes he gear at the bottom of it.

Any
Tuesday September 20th, 2005 9:49:09 AM

Any is uneasy about going by boat-how will Moonshadow accompany him? He also does not want these men to take their weapons and leave.

"Friend Lorth, what will you do about your newly acquired steed? I fear for my good companion Moonshadow, for surely he cannot accompany us in these boats."

Then turning to face the others he says,

"If these men would accompany us until we part with Mistress Drosera, then they should be allowed to go to wherever they would like, but I would not see past combatants turned loose with weapons to go where they will, perhaps even to report our own whereabouts. If there was another way to insure their silence--short of ending this threat permanently--then I would suggest such a course. Do any here see another way around this dilemna?"

Harvest (HP 30/34)
Tuesday September 20th, 2005 10:14:27 AM

Harvest Moon, touches the elven ranger on the arm. "We all face adversity together, Arminas Calaelen," she says. "We feel each other's distress. I feel concern when you and the others suffer."

"But we, all of us, gain strength from the faith that we have in each other. The more we give of ourselves, them more we gain back in return." Harvest shrugs. "Faith. It is something in which I believe. We all enter this land of tyranny together, and we will face it as one. You ask us to strike off your arm rather than allow you to become a slave. I think we will, all of us, be dead before such a thing comes to pass."

"We will keep these in charge for you, Dorsera," Harvest Moon says, turning to the sorceress. "Please explain their nature and their usage. If we should encounter a situation in which you must act, I would know which of these items to return to you first."

Her eyes turn to Andrath Silverhand, as she begins laying the items out on the sand for explanation. He has been so silent. Silent when all here look to him for guidance.

Faith. Faith she thinks to herself.

Arminas listens to Harvest, her sincerity is evident.

"While my faith in elves has been shattered, I do have faith in you and the other Swords of Light."

Glancing towards Bralin as he meditates on his Orb

"Bralin even, though I know he would bloody my nose at the hint of an insult, he would also fight to the death for the cause. Faith in him is easy, as it is not difficult to anticipate his actions. I wish I could so easily discern the actions and intent of elves we meet."

Soon, Arminas gets up and wanders about. He greets Erwen as she returns from her hunt, hoping she was able to find food. With sympathy, he realizes that Any is troubled about his mount. Walking over to him, he puts his hand on Moonshadow's mane, stroking it gently. (handle animal 23)

"If it would help, I could speak to Moonshadow and give him directions as to where to meet again."

Ashalan
Tuesday September 20th, 2005 5:04:16 PM

Ash agrees with the words spoken by his friend Villemus, and says as much to the rest of the group. He does not wish to cause undo harm to these men.

With the matter settled in his mind at least, Ash settles into one of the boats, trying to make himself comfortable.

Bralin
Tuesday September 20th, 2005 5:53:45 PM

The dwarf rises, and hears Any's question.

"We have the mistress. The servants will not seek us harm. Allow them their weapons."

DM Bob & Carla
Tuesday September 20th, 2005 11:33:38 PM

The boats are wondrous fabrications of light wood and bark. Large, they could easily hold a ton of goods for trading...or 10 bodies, including paddlers. Without waiting for instructions, Dens and Thu walk over to the pile of oars and each picks one up before returning to the river's edge. Wading into the water, they move to the back of the boats and tugging, pull them a little further apart. Dens has a smirk on his face as he watches Lorth gingerly make his way into one of the boats followed by Ashalan.

When Bralin speaks, Taxo nods and the men not with the boats move to retrieve their weapons. "We will do as Drosera says," he promises. Taxo retrieves his weapons, then approaches the sorceress. He takes a knee in front of her. The dark haired elf places a delicate hand on the man's head and whispers. "Cormlle naa Tanya telraa. Namaarie, voronwer mellonamin. (Those who understand elvish, Highlight to display spoiler: {"Your heart is that of a lion. Farewell, my loyal friend." }) The dark man rises, and his words come heavy to his tongue, "Amin khiluva lle a gurtha ar that" (Those who understand elvish, Highlight to display spoiler: { I would follow you unto death and beyond.}) The leader sheaths his sword and signals to his men. If not stopped, they soon disappear into the forest.

Drosera points out the various items left behind. "The swords, daggers, and bucklers, belong to Dens and Thu. The darts are mine as is the wand. The wand has 18 charges and will cause instant growth of a humanoid creature." Pointing at the vials she volunteers, "those 5 will restore health to varying degrees (2 CLW, 3 CMW) and that one will distort the image of the one who imbibes it, making it shift and waver."

A tiny smile graces the frail elf's face at Ashalan's concern for Moonshadow and the support that is shown by Arminus and the others. "If your friend was willing, I could cast a spell that would decrease its size. You would still need to keep it from becoming too excitable."

Her hands at her sides, the sorceress waits on the party's decision.

(OOC: Please indicate which boat you take, #1 or #2 and your position in the boat and whether or not you take an oar. If you take an oar, please roll a Strength Check and a d2.)

Andrath
Tuesday September 20th, 2005 11:53:21 PM

Andrath watches as Drosera's five men leave with their weapons. "We have listened to the lady and her men talk, and none of us have been able to hear any falsehoods. Those five may decide to take a different course of action later on, but for now, I believe that they are heading to join up with the resistance."

"But we have a more pressing decision to make. Those of you with horses will not be able to accompany us in the boat. Drosera, will your spell last for the entire trip? My experience is that it will run out, and suddenly we will be dealing with large, four-footed animals in these boats. So I think that we will have to travel by land, leaving these boats hidden here. Unless one of you have a better idea?"

Lorth
Wednesday September 21st, 2005 7:37:11 AM

"My horse is not an issue, he will not need to travel in the boat.", Lorth says. [His horse is already gone]
Lorth sits in the middle of the boat, he doesn't take an oar unless given one. If given one he attemps to use it like Drosera's men. He has no experience with boats.

Any
Wednesday September 21st, 2005 9:52:41 AM

"Yes friend Arminas, speak to Moonshadow. I would have had him travel perhaps with Lorth's companion, but he is gone already. I would not wish to risk my good friend in the boats. I will take what gear I have to lighten his travel, and pray to Domi that we will meet at the journeys end."

Any is saddened by the this need, but determined to continue with the swords of light. The quest which they are on is too important to the people to be turned aside now.
He stows his gear in the barges, and offers to take an oar. It has been a while since this need has presented itself, but he is familiar with boats and travel upon the water from his days traveling with his former troupe. His new mithril shirt should give no trouble if it comes to swimming, but he stow his pack and staff with his gear from Moonshadow.

"I will hold these for you, Dorsera," Harvest Moon explains with careful deliberation, "and before we part ways, they will be returned." The little monk places each item within her haversack without fear of them becoming mixed with her own. The haversack will know which is which.

Harvest follows Dorsera, climbing into the same boat as the elven sorceress. Anxious to learn something of the way of boats, she begs instruction and takes up one of the oars.

What appears so simple, in reality, turns out to be not so. And yet, one cannot learn if one does not try. While she plies the oar, Harvest watches the banks, keeping a look out against attack.

Wednesday September 21st, 2005 4:35:32 PM

Wordlessly, Bralin climbs into the boat not taken by Lorth (#2?).

He finds the exact middle, and stays there. If requested to row, or handed an oar, he'll dutifully make the attempt (Str check 16, d2=2). Otherwise, he sits, waits, and watches.

DM Bob & Carla-Let's try this again...  d2=2 d20+2=15
Wednesday September 21st, 2005 10:15:34 PM

Any says a sad farewell to Moonshadow while Arminus sends the faithful steed back to Jarlwolf and Dulcet's manor. The ranger next sends his companion to scout down river. (Roll Ewan's Listen and Spot Checks and 1d6) Meanwhile, the party divides up into the boats while Andrath watches.

( OOC: Only half the group rolled the requested Strength Check and 1d2.)

Drosera takes a seat at the front of boat #2. Harvest follows suit catching up an oar along the way. The monk is followed by Bralin who takes the next place, firmly planting himself in the middle of the boat, and then Ash is next. Thu hands the dwarf an oar, then tugs the boat so that it is no longer grounded. The first dip of the oars is an awkward affair. Thu, Bralin, and Harvest synchronize their strokes (d2=2) however Harvest's oar fans the surface of the water. (Need Strength=10 for an effective stroke!) An enthusiastic Ash plunges his oar into the river, but he is out of sync with his fellows, and the boat veers back towards the shore. "We want to go south...downstream..." Thu calls out. A wide smile softens the man's hard face as he uses his oar to steer the boat. "It's going to be an interesting trip," he laughs.

Lorth seats himself in the middle of boat #1, his equipment carefully piled at his feet. Villemus and Arminus jockey for the front seat, while Any settles behind Lorth. Dens stands at the back, waiting to shove the boat into deeper water, and just shakes his head.

Boat #2 is about 10ft from shore. Andrath can make boat #2 with a Jump Check vs DC 10. If you fail, make a DC Reflex Save vs 15 to grab the edge of the boat, and a Climb Check vs DC 15 to get in. Of course, he can just get into boat #1 which is still grounded.

Everyone who is in a boat and has an oar please roll Strength Check vs DC 10 for an effective stroke, and 1d2.

He looks over his shoulder to the bow, and says, "Maybe one of you would like to give this a try, since I seem to be so inept. Also, wouldn't it make sense to have my keen eyes looking ahead of us?"

DM Bob & Carla
Friday September 23rd, 2005 12:48:29 AM

Bralin, Harvest, and Thu synchronize their strokes, and propel their boat towards the middle of the river where it is caught up by the current. Once Andrath is settled, Dens pushes the next boat further into the water before he climbs in. Villemus and Any synchronize their strokes, but only Any manages to pull through the water as Villemus slices the paddle awkwardly across the surface. Andrath finds the oar an awkward thing and tries to pass it off to another. Lorth sits nervously in the middle of the boat while Arminus looks downriver keeping an eye out for danger.

As the boats pass beyond the small beach where the party had camped, the river narrows slightly and the trees are drawn down to the river's brink. Here a great tree thrusts its twisted roots down into the water and there a green-leaved branch reaches out to touch the surface. The sunlight glittering on the water dazzles the eyes and the air is clean and sweet smelling.

Any sings, the only sound the break the silence, and the entire party find they are able to find a rhythm to the work. So the party makes their way down the wide hurrying waters, borne ever southward.

He scans the countryside as it passes (spot 7!), and listens to Drosera's boatman on the tiller, in order to best give assistance where needed. Since the boat is floating with the current, there is only the need to paddle to adjust its direction away from obstacles, remaining in the main body of the stream, so he rests when he is able, to conserve his strength for real need. He asks the boatman,

"Are there any rapids, or falls, between us and our detination, and if so, wil we need to portage these boats?"

Bralin still does not see the shape his comrades are speaking of, but the word "turtle" conjures recollections of a most unpleasant water experience.

And, even if not a turtle, it is most assuredly a water borne creature. This is different.
Different is bad.

The dwarf stops rowing, and moves to secure a potion (Fly) from his belt pouch. He grips the draught tightly, waiting.
