The Avatar of Ebyron

DM Bob & Carla
Monday September 26th, 2005 11:21:00 PM

Several of the party witness the 'rock' as it passes them by, moving faster even then the current of the river. It passes almost beyond their view down river, and then, suddenly, a huge form starts to emerge from the river itself. Composed, it seems, from the very rocks of the river bed, it rises to 15 ft. in front of the party. The current reverses and a wall of water threatens to upset the boats.

All Balance Check vs 14 or fall out of the boat. For those in the water DC Reflex Save vs 15 to grab the edge of the boat, and a Climb Check vs DC 15 to get back in. Swim Check vs DC 15 to keep your head above water.

Despite the chaos there are words. They are not spoken, but rather resound inside your head in the same language that was first spoken to you by your mother. "Be you friend or foe, you who traverse my dominion in these difficult times?"

Andrath  d20+7=12 d20+9=28 d20+9=11
Tuesday September 27th, 2005 12:02:41 AM

The shaking boat throws the elf out into the water, but he manages to grab onto the gunwhale before he ends up fully in the drink. He tries to clamber in, but can't quite get a good enough grip. [OOC: missed balance roll, made reflex save, missed climb check by only 4, so no climb this round.]

"What is that thing?" he calls out, as he holds tight to the boat.

Lorth  d20+1=20
Tuesday September 27th, 2005 7:32:38 AM

Because Lorth is at the center of the boat he manages to hold onto the seat he is sitting on, when the thing bursts out of the water. (Balance 20, no armor penalty, not wearing any)
He looks around quickly and if someone is holding on to the side of the boat he is in, he moves carefully to it and tries to assist them by pulling them up.

By the Stone........

Bralin is launched into the water, clearing the side of the boat by several feet. He hits with a spectacular splash, disappears, and resurfaces, gulping a huge breath of air.

The dwarf's powerful arms beat against the water in great splashes as he battles against the weight of his own armor. For the moment, he stays above the surface, but the warrior knows he's in a losing battle.

While he still can, Bralin uses his teeth to rip the stopper out of the potion he holds, and downs the contents.

Villemus  d20+3=22
Tuesday September 27th, 2005 9:36:18 AM

The nimble half-drow easily maintained his balance as he retrieved his rope from his pack and threw it towards the struggling dwarf.

"A friend to mother nature."

Harvest (HP 30/34)  d20+3=15
Tuesday September 27th, 2005 9:54:21 AM

The brown crest of hair that hangs over Harvest Moon's forehead blows back with the rise of the rise of the thing from the river. Harvest keeps her seat, riding with the upward motion of the light water craft. She rises into a crouch and throws an arm around the waist of the frail elven sorceress in the front of the boat before her.

"We will make for the shore, Dorsera," she whispers. "Be prepared."

Arminas barely holds to the boat to keep from flipping over the bow into the river. Checking to see that his equipment is safe, he then looks up to see the monsterous rock creature.

The voice sounds safe, yet it seems so fierce.

Arminas blurts out:

"I am a friend to Nature, and no friend to Parnoth."

Any  d20+6=9 d20+7=25 d20+3=12
Tuesday September 27th, 2005 2:43:40 PM

Any, looking over his shoulder at Dens, does not see the apparition rise in front of the boat, and is thrown overboard. He is able to grab the gunwhale of the boat, but cannot battle the current enough to climb back in. He focuses all his energy into maintaining his precarious hold, and to seek an opportune moment to try again.

The wall of water crashes into the first boat and sets it to rock violently. One minute Harvest has her arm around Drosera's waist, and the next minute the she-elf is in the water! Bralin makes a spectacular splash, and with all the strength he can muster pushes to the surface where he manages to decant and quaff the potion held in his hand. The dwarf starts to feel light as if supported in the water by many bubbles. Harvest, Ash, and Thu manage to remain in the boat as it swoops down the back of the wave.

Any and Andrath are tossed from the second boat when the wave hits. The elf and half-elf manage to grab hold of the upper edge of the boat and hang on for dear life! (Climb Check vs DC 15 to get back in the boat.) Arm, Villemus, Lorth, and Dens stay on board.

A friend to nature...to mother...Wold? the voice reverberates inside your head, and what of the Sleeper Who Has Been Awakened? The Fey King? Ebyron? Life and death, growth and destruction, health and decay. Nature in it's purest form., wild and chaotic. Are you our friend?

The huge humanoid creature stands in the middle of the river. Formed of the very stones of the river bed, it glistens with a thousand droplets of water as if encrusted with diamonds, terrible and beautiful to behold.

Lorth
Wednesday September 28th, 2005 7:27:39 AM

Lorth carefully moves to help whoever is closer, Anny or Andrath. He attempts to haul them back into the boat. He stays silent as he doesn't know enough about the Fey King to say if he is for or against him. Right now he is neutral.

Harvest (HP 30/34)
Wednesday September 28th, 2005 8:31:11 AM

Without word or hesitation, Harvest Moon plunges into the water after the fallen Dorsera. As she reaches for the sorceress with a pale hand, she also reaches with her spirit, to one of the small divine gifts that she possesses. If she can acquire a grip upon the slight elf, it may be possible to run to the shore and out of the grasping waves of the river.

Bralin (Fly1)
Wednesday September 28th, 2005 1:16:36 PM

Bralin rises out of the water and back to the boat. Reaching it, he sluffs out of his waterlogged pack and opens it, all the while keeping a wary eye on the creature of stone.

Nature in it's purest form., wild and chaotic. Are you our friend? it asked.

The creature will not like his answer. Bralin will give one, but not until the warhammer he seeks is secure in his grasp.

Arminas
Wednesday September 28th, 2005 2:08:22 PM

Arminas looks to see that Any and Andrath have a secure hold to the boat. Then to Lorth and Den he says:

"Perhaps we should row for shore, and our friends could then reach the safety of the shore."

He turns as the rock creature clarifies his question:

"I sang to awaken the sleeper. I am a friend of Nature, yet is all that takes place in the Wold lately natural?"

Any  d20+3=7
Wednesday September 28th, 2005 5:52:31 PM

Any still cannot find the grip necessary to regain the safety of the boat, but continues to hang on and seek another oppurtunity.(climb 7!)

Andrath  d20+9=11
Thursday September 29th, 2005 12:29:32 AM

Andrath tries to scramble up into the boat, but the violent rocking stops him from getting his leg up and over the side. He hangs on, ready to try once more. He is concentrating too hard on the climb to worry about the puzzling questions being asked by the creature from the river bed.

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday September 29th, 2005 1:25:09 AM

We can count only one friend amongst you?

Nature is not always kind, but it is always fair. Life, death, growth, destruction, health, and decay...all are kept in balance.

Our name is Ebyron. We are Nature in its purest form--wild and untamed, a Spirit of the Land. We live in this valley, this river. We live here and it lives in us! We were awakened by the Elves, who long, we believe, for a return to natural ways. We have returned to the Wold, and Nature rejoices.

Have you not seen the richness of nature's bounty?

Centuries ago, there were those who were afraid of us. They said we represented a force too wild and chaotic to be allowed to continue in the Wold. Our Queen... dear, sweet, Maab, conspired to send us to sleep...

The words resonate in elvish, dwarvish, common. Then with a great shake the huge fey sends the diamonds of water flying though the air and an arc containing the colours of the spectrum form over the river.

Lorth tries valiantly to help Any and Andrath, but the violent rocking of the boat makes climbing in near impossible. The elf and half-elf manage to hang on to the upper edge of the boat. Armimus suggests they make for shore, and Dens puts his back into his work. Hanging onto the side of the boat 5 ft. 9 in. Any can feel his feet touch solid ground.

(Lorth need a Strength Check vs DC 10 for Aid Another to help Any or Andrath. They could then add +2 to their Climb. With +2, neither of them would have made it this round, however!)

Harvest Moon dives overboard and is able to grab the hood of Drosera's cloak. Using a power conferred by her belief, Harvest is able to gain the shore, dragging the bedraggled elf behind her.

Bralin flys back to the boat and starts to dig through his pack as Dens and Ash paddle for shore.

Lorth continues to help Any and/or Andrath enter the boat as long as it looks like they are trying. He ignores Ebyron, certainly this force is not good, as before it even tried to discern if they where friends, it carelessly threw some of them in the water.
If the boat makes shore, he helps Dens pull it aground.

Harvest (HP 30/34)  d20+5=17
Thursday September 29th, 2005 10:16:34 AM

Laying Drosera on the ground in as comfortable a position as possible, Harvest runs through a quick examination of her condition.

"I have seen the rejoicing of nature," Harvest replies over the raging of the river. She speaks as her hands and eyes, tend to Drosera. "Nature's yield has grown three or four fold. Flowers have bloomed upon the sterile lands of the Dead Zone. The good in what you are, Ebyron, is readily apparent."

"And yet, Ebyron, many do not have the constitution to bear anything in it's pure form. Law is created to protect these, the one's who are weak. Law is a force of wisdom and restraint that provides it's own rewards, it's own form of bounty. The Law provides Peace. And Peace, though neither amazing nor spectacular, brings a gift of longevity that is not appreciated until it is gone."

"Do you understand your own nature, Ebyron?" Harvest Moon asks. "Do you truly understand how your presence affects the greater Wold? And do you, yourself, understand why it is that your Queen deemed it necessary for you to be sent to sleep?"

"Have you considered these things, Ebyron?" she asks.

Seeing that they are near shore, he encourages Den and Lorth to finish the job.

"The safety of the shore is near! Quickly now."

If they make shore, then Arminas will jump out quickly.

Turning, he speaks to the rock creature:

"Our disagreement is with Parnoth. He enslaves the very elves who awoke you. These people ... waving his arm around to point at his companions .. are here to help me find a way to stop Parnoth. Perhaps you could help us? Elves have always been your friend, and they are in troubled times."

Arminas pauses, and looks around.

"You speak of nature being fair. Rocks and soil live as truely as the trees. Yet they do not stand and move as you do now. Is this form you take truely natural?"

Any  d20+3=21 d20=20
Thursday September 29th, 2005 3:39:55 PM

Any feels the bottom of the river under his feet and quickly springs off the bottom, boosting his efforts to regain the boat(climb 21). With this aid he quickly climbs aboard, and turns to help Andrath out of the water (aid another 20). He listens to what is being said, trying to determine the best way to help.

As soon as Andrath is safe, any will check the integrity of his lute and gear. When satisfied that all is well, he will begin to strum the tune of the wakening song of the fey king.

Bralin (Fly2)
Thursday September 29th, 2005 4:44:53 PM

Bralin fishes the well made war hammer out of his pack and floats up into the air.

Yet they do not stand and move as you do now, Arminas says. The dwarf needs a moment to recollect his thoughts after that idoicy. But, no. He must attend to the task at hand.

"Ye ARE too wild," the warrior answers emphatically. "E'en nature has borders, be it ocean or mountain or riverbank. Should ye grow uncontained, where be the balance? Nay. Yon queen was wise to contain you. And ye shall be contained anew."

Andrath  d20+9=29
Thursday September 29th, 2005 11:43:18 PM

Finally, Andrath clambers into the boat. Certainly not a confidence-inspiring few moments for the rogue of the party. Once the boat is pulled to shore, the elf hops out and plants both feet firmly on the ground.

"Well met, Ebyron. We are travelling to the Emerald Kingdom to try to help the elves, who are being persecuted by Parnoth. Will you let us pass on our boats?"

DM Bob & Carla
Friday September 30th, 2005 12:38:09 AM

"Yes! We are munificent, are we not? All the races partake of the feast we provide, but do they give thanks to its provenance? Do they understand at what cost it is provided? " the words resonate in a light male voice that does not match the image of the manifestation in front of you.

Harvest confirms that Drosera will be all right, and then challenges the avatar to show restraint.

" Little one, what do you know of Law? Natural Law is basic and fundamental. It is discoverable by reason without reference to enactments or judicial decisions. Your Law is man made, conditioned by history, and supports materialistic gains of a few at the expense of the many.

When we were awakened by the Elves, and returned to the Wold, Nature rejoiced. The results could have been interpreted as destructive, but that is the way with Nature. Disturbance is essential to create new life. The pine tree can not survive without fire. The cone will not release its seeds for naught but the conflagration. Afterwards the blueberries hurry to form a bounteous carpet over the dead coals, and beasts come to feast on the new shoots as the circle of life starts anew!

Meanwhile Villemus fails to help those who cling to the boat, but Lorth has better luck. Any is a little more successful and clambers into the boat. Arminus urges Dens and the others to make for shore, and the boat quickly runs aground. The wood elf reiterates his allegiance, and speaks of Parnoth, as Any plays a recognizable tune.

The fey spirit nods his head. "Know this! We exercise some measure of influence over the natural forces that welcome our return. We can channel these forces against the great Evil to the south of this fair forest. Even now a host of our followers gathers, awaiting our instruction."

The sun sinks a little lower in the sky, and shadow creeps upon the valley. The air becomes a little cooler, and suddenly the creature reaches out a stony hand, intoning an ancient word of power, and the water becomes as still and smooth as the surface of a mirror. Images coalesce upon the surface. The fleeting image of a small perfect female, dressed in silver with a silver crown, her translucent skin emitting a radiant light. Fae Queen Maab uncurls her fingers and looks down into the palm of her hand. Three small acorns lie there. "Let those who live in the Wold choose".

Staring hard at the flying dwarf, the creature lowers it's arm."The gods have let her provide you with a means to determine our fate. We ask you to let us LIVE!"

Drosera takes a few steps to the edge of the water. She extracts three acorns from her pocket, staring down at them for a moment. Selecting one, she pockets the other two. Then, with a graceful arc of her arm she tosses the acorn into the water.

Arminas
Friday September 30th, 2005 10:32:46 AM

Arminas is visibly relaxed. Bralin's anger is a dangerous thing, and it was coming quickly to the surface.

"It is a wonderous moment, to be in the presence of two beings of such power. Remember, no ill has come to us from them. Some got wet, but a bath was needed. I will choose now."

Arminas reaches into his pouch and pulls out three acorns. He looks them over just long enough to find the correct one. He then tosses it into the still water.

Lorth
Friday September 30th, 2005 11:29:35 AM

Lorth rests on the shore. We then waits for the party to decide what to do next, since all are safe.

Harvest
Friday September 30th, 2005 11:57:48 AM

"What I know of Law," Harvest Moon replies, "is what can be gleaned from the wisdom of one's experience."

She removes the three acorns from her pouch.

"And you are mistaken. The thing that you call Natural Law is discoverable by observation. Not by reason. Reason is considered, and takes in not only what is, but what may be. Man-made law may carry with it man's imperfection. But, within such, is always the possibility for compassion. If man-made laws are flawed in that they are changeable, then are also superior for that very same reason. For in their mutability is contained the spark of hope."

The crest of hair at her forehead wags as Harvest shakes her head.

"I sense no justice within you. No moderation. Consideration for few save yourself."

From her palm, she plucks one of the three small brown nuts.

"As great as is our need ... " The little brown girl stands upon the shore, her sentence unfinished. Drawing back her hand in an underhand cast, she throws her acorn out into the still waters at the foot of the stone shape of Ebyron. For a moment the acorn bobs, turning so that the rune shows above the mirror surface of the water. SLEEP it says, and then sinks into the depths.

Bralin (Fly3)
Friday September 30th, 2005 12:02:35 PM

Bralin continues to hover before the stone creature.

"Ages past, yon queen sentenced you to SLEEP. Now ye are back. Should you Sleep again, you will awake anew, endangering those yet unborn. Tis not a choice, tis avoidance of a choice. Clan Corregan does not avoid choices."

"The forces of nature care not for Evil or Good," the dwarf notes. "Ye care not for either, and now ye would grow unfettered, overpowering all."

His statement is utterly predicatble, but Bralin isn't quite done. His words continue-

"Yet, should ye remain a force in balance, strong, not overpowering, THEN ye bring good to all the Wold. Tis your power, not your presence, which offends my senses, Avatar. Ye shall not be condemned."

The dwarf chooses his acorn - REFORM - and drops it into the stream below his feet.

Any
Friday September 30th, 2005 12:48:49 PM

Any, having recovered his composure-and his Lute-ponders the choice placed before the companions. He too has seen that nature uncontrolled is not to be accepted, but he would see no being-no matter how powerful-kept from the joy that is life. He takes the three acorns from his pouch and selects one. With a flick of his wrist, he sends it into the water.
Highlight to display spoiler: {Reform}

His choice made, Any settles himself to await the choice of the others, and to see what the result of their choosing will be. He has no words to present to the Avatar, at least none that would have an affect upon him.

Villemus
Friday September 30th, 2005 12:53:11 PM

Selecting the acorn with the rune "Reform", Villemus gently dropped his choice into the water.

DM Bob & Carla  d6=2 d20=1 d20=16
Sunday October 2nd, 2005 9:50:43 PM

The spirit of the land watches, a grim set to the mouth on his stony face. For the first time he addresses the party with words spoken aloud. Speaking in common he announces in a rumbling voice,

"If you vote to let us live, then we intend to use our power to help the natural Wold. We wish to make it easier for the noble races to live in nature. We hope to turn them away from exploiting its bounty, but rather conserve and nurture it. We intend to use our powers to strengthen the natural order. Those that care about the preservation of nature and her creatures will be called our friend. Those who only seek to exploit the natural world will be our enemy.

Do not deny us our vengeance! No longer is our anger focused on those who put us to sleep, but rather now it is on he who is called Parnoth, he who seeks to make slaves of those who are responsible for waking us from our long unnatural sleep!"

The elemental manifestation of the fey spirit reaches out a hand and palm down, moves it in a circle over the water. A small whirlpool appears and the 6 acorns float on the surface in a gentle swirling circle."

Dens and Thu each select an acorn from the three allotted them, and toss it into the water where they join the swirling collection.

Those who got wet, some of your items have become ruined. Harvest Moon, discovers that water has seeped into the HHHaversack. Most of the items are intact, but water has soaked into the outermost of the large roll of scrolls. Number the scrolls 1-20 then roll 1d6 (for the number of ruined scrolls) and 1d20 for each of the ruined scrolls to learn which ones were lost. Ex. 1d6=2, 1d20=1 (Scroll of Alarm), 1d20=16 (Scroll of Jump)) Bralin is too focused on the creature of stone to notice the seals affixed to his clothing have become unstuck and lost to the river. A quick check shows Any that the remainder of his rations, along with his packages of herbs and spices, and his holy wafers can not be salvaged. His lute it all right, but it must be tended to immediately. Andrath has lost his trail rations as well, and though his spell book will be forever stained, the pages of carefully copied spells are intact.

Andrath
Monday October 3rd, 2005 12:58:33 AM

Andrath also picks the acorn labelled "Refrom", and tosses it into the water. "Reform, but to what?" he thinks to himself, as he awaits the outcome.

"Natural power without limits is like any other unlimited power, very dangerous. Even though it means no harm, that does not mean that it doesn't cause harm," he says to the elemental creature.

Lorth

Her crest of hair now hangs plastered down across one eye. Harvest Moon lifts a hand to pull it aside.

"Ebyron," she continues, standing there upon the beach, "the power within you speaks of great promise. Such hope is good."

"And yet, even such bright aspirations can fall to lack of judgment. And when you speak of vengeance against those who placed you in Sleep before, I fear for your lack of judgment. Will such a desire color your choice of who is deemed and exploiter?"

Harvest backs away from the water's edge. The waterlogged pack on her back is not yet of concern.

"I cannot support such a thing, Ebyron," she says, "bright as your promise may be. I can only wish you greater wisdom, and hope for the future."

Bralin has voiced his thoughts and cast his vote. Further arguement is fruitless.

The dwarf hovers in front of the stone creature, silently waiting.

Arminas
Monday October 3rd, 2005 2:33:30 PM

Arminas looks at the hovering dwarf, and is reminded of a bumblebee. Too large to fly, and has a painful sting.

Perhaps I will call him 'Bumblebee Bralin'.

Then he thinks

This is twice now we have agreed, perhaps it is not a good time to make a nickname for him. I think we are becoming friends.

Having cast his vote, Arminas decides to call Erwen down to him.

With a series of whistles, he calls for the eagle to come.

Any

Any listens to the pronouncement of the Avatar. He has stated his opinion, and cast his vote. He will await the decision of the group, but he agrees with the Avatar on one thing, Parnoth must be stopped from accomplishing that which he has set out to do.

OOC Unless Any's pack got wet while in the boat, nothing should be ruined. I stated on several occasions that I stowed my gear on the boat, and checked to make sure it was secure and okay both before falling in, and afterwards. I also immediately checked the condition of his instrument, caring for it before he started playing.

(OOC: You are right! I had thought someone had posted about stowing their pack. When I read back through the posts last night, I couldn't locate it again. Very sorry. Your goods are safe!-DM Carla)

DM Bob & Carla
Monday October 3rd, 2005 11:27:17 PM

Votes are cast with the exception of the paladin, who abstains. Still, folks wonder what the results might entail. REFORM seems to carry the day, out of fear that nature unchecked would lead to tragedy for humanity or that too much power wielded by one individual would lead to corruption isn't clear.

The spirit's hand moves faster over the water and the funnel becomes more vigorous. Suddenly the hand stops, and the acorns disappear below the surface. We hope you do not regret your decisions, echoes like a whisper in the valley, and the creature starts to crumple, the stones sliding apart and returning to the river bed.

Lorth

Harvest (HP 30/34)
Tuesday October 4th, 2005 11:31:09 AM

Harvest Moon relaxes her stance as the creature of stone falls away, settling back down into the river.

We hope that you do not regret your decision ...

She notes the waterlogged state of her clothing. Harvest shrugs off her haversack. It would be a simple matter of shucking her simple robe and wringing from it the water. However, it is at this time that she notes the condition of the haversack itself.

Each item must be removed, inspected, and placed in an orderly spot upon the ground. This is proof positive, that the magic haversacks will not withstand water.

When Harvest Moon is surrounded by an organized arrangement of her equipment, arrayed in rows like city blocks, when all is settled, and cataloged, in the end, the only two items with irreparable damage are two minor scrolls.

Harvest Moon frowns at the illegible smears of ink. Possibly, if the scrolls were dried, the other sides of the parchment may still be useable. Inside, Harvest breathes relief that the damaged scrolls were not those purchased for use by the party.

We hope that you do not regret your decision ...

Harvest Moon turns one of the ruined scrolls over in her hands. A small cost for a life. With a smile, she runs down to the water's edge, and pulls her robe up over her head. Twisting and wringing, the little naked girl wrings her single item of clothing dry, before returning to re-pack all of her belongings.

We hope that you do not regret your decision...

Any considers these words, and concurs with their sentiment. He had been tempted to vote for "Sleep", but then thought of the good they Fey King could accomplish if he could somehow be tempered in his judgement or actions. "Reform" seemed to give this world the best option and chance, especially with Parnoth still unaccounted for.

He watches Harvest checking the contents of her haversack, and then smiles slightly to himself as she addresses the problem of wet clothes. A cold chill up his back reminds him that he too went for a swim, and quickly follows her example, divesting himself of his wet garments, and ridding them of excess water. He then dons his less damp clothing, and once again takes his place within the boat. While the others are gathering, he strums a tune and sings,

"The Fey King did rule and reign upon

He continues to hum, as he strums this tune. When the others are ready, he carefully places his lute in its case, checks his gear, and prepares to move on down the river.

Arminas and Erwen
Tuesday October 4th, 2005 12:12:43 PM

Arminas greets the eagle as he flys down toward him. The lowering sun sends rays of light that bounce of the golden feathers of the eagle. Like a meteor on its path to earth, the blazing eagle drops toward Arminas.

Arminas laughs, a joyful sound.

Those who are near here him as he speaks to the eagle.

"Forgive me my friend. It is just that I recently saw a dwarf fly, and the contrast between you was too much."

Then in a whispered voice:
"He seemed like a bumblebee, a very large one."

Then he laughs again.

Turning to the group, he trys to hide his smile, but a grin will not go away.

"The sun is getting lower, we should either hurry on our way or prepare to spend the night. Drosera, how far to the Tree of Parting?"

Bralin
Tuesday October 4th, 2005 12:20:09 PM

We hope that you do not regret your decision.
Bralin's own thoughts echo the sentiment.

The dwarf floats down to his spot on the boat, noting without comment the destruction of the Seals he wears.

He waits patiently for Andrath to decide upon continuing or setting up camp, prepared to accomplish either.

The river returns to its normal state, flowing steadily across the rocky river bed that had once been the avatar of Ebyron. Drosera's companions wait till all are on board before pushing their crafts back into the current.

"It is still several more hours down the river before we approach the Tree of Parting. There is a large bend in the river just upstream where we can put ashore unnoticed." Dorosera paints a picture of the river bend across the horizon with a sweep of her hand.

"Would that it be true that Ebyron would assist those that would defeat Parnoth" she exclaimns as she contemplates all that has happened.

Lorth
Wednesday October 5th, 2005 7:31:26 AM

In silence, at the center of the boat, Lorth thinks about the decision to be made. Things where fine when the Fey King was asleep, thus perhaps he should return there. Although sooner or later the elves will do the same thing and wake him again, even though they know it is a mistake.
Lorth cannot understand elves, they beleive they are better than the other races, yet they do the most foolish things, without thinking, and cause such problems.
Reform is to uncertain, who is to say the Fey King will agree with his reformation and not seek to return back to what he once was. Certainly the other races cannot trust the elves word on that.
Death seems to be the most logical answer. Once and forever be done with it. Mostly likely he will vote for this.

Arminas climbs back into the bow of the boat, again keeping his bow ready. He gives the eagle the signal to search, and he launches into the sky.

"It is good that we averted a fight, as it may have turned deadly for us. We would then not accomplish our goal. Sometimes talking is more wise than fighting."

He then turns and smiles at Bralin, and a grin again crosses his face.

Bumblebee Bralin

The thought flashes through his mind.

Any
Wednesday October 5th, 2005 1:30:16 PM

Any settles himself, pushing stroke after stroke with his paddle as needed to direct their boat down the river.

"Indeed friend Arminas, I do not think we would have survived a confrontation with the Avatar if he had considered us a threat. I do hope that the Fey King will aid us in the battle against Parnoth. That would tip the odds for success into our favor, or so I would hope."

Any then begins to sing, again chosing a song with simple words and a steady rythm.

"Come ye fellows, friends and all.
Heed and answer to the call.
The Captain, he's a patient man,
but don't ye cross him e'en ye
can. He can lift ye up, and give
ye bread, or just as quick, he'll
leave ye dead."

DM Bob & Carla
Wednesday October 5th, 2005 11:21:47 PM

Drosera looks down shame facedly at her feet when Harvest questions her advice. "You are right of course...I have presumed too much, that you would wish to enter as quietly as possible rather than announce your presence to all. They bear no cuffs you see." She points at those of elven blood in the group. "Without bracelets all will know that you are from afar."

Thu pipes in as well. "We are also well known but not well loved in these parts and would draw attention to you and your companions."

"Folbre, the blind one, runs the Tree of Parting and remains untouched by Parnoth for even that evil beast knows that to act against Folbre would set all the noble races against him. The blind one is no immediate threat to Parnoth, and the Tree of Parting is an important gateway between the Emerald Kingdom and the outside Wold. Folbre can put you in touch with the Council of Elders" Drosera rubs her wrists as her thoughts turn to Parnoth.

The Swords of Light take their turns at the oars as the boats glide downstream in the current. Nothing more rises from the riverbed and no signs of danger appear on the shores. Any tries to lighten the mood with song, but there is much to think about between the fate of Ebyron and the enormity of the challenge before them.

Harvest Moon quietly shakes her head.

"The bend in the river will be fine, Drosera. You remind me that this is your land, and your knowledge of things is far greater than ours. If you feel that arriving unseen is best, then I should not question it."

A few strokes of the paddle.

"Will you be coming into the Tree of Parting with us, Drosera?" Harvest asks. "To speak to Folbre the Blind? I ask because ... it has occured to me from your words and those of Thu, that you may not be welcome there. And, even though this may be true, it may be valuable to us to have your counsel while we speak with Folbre."

Any watches the shoreline as they approach their landing spot (spot 12), but does not see anything out of the ordinary.
"If you are not accompanying us into the Inn, how are we to know the way, and how will we know where to meet with you again? Remember, though we are allied at the moment, we still cannot be sure of your intentions. You have already once tried to place us in your power, and thus in the power of Parnoth. What can we do to insure that you do nothing more to achieve this same end?"

Any turns to the rest of the party as he poses these last questions, raising his voice to insure all can hear, then he awaits there response.

Bralin merely rows and listens.

Arminas sits quietly and watches down river. He thoughts turn dark as talk of Parnoth and slavery come up. Gripping his bow tightly, he waits.

Thursday October 6th, 2005 10:18:28 PM

"So, we plan to spend the night at the river, and then head to the Tree in the morning? Drosera, do we need to separate? If having you with us would be dangerous for both of our groups, maybe we need to split up. If necessary, we can head to the Tree on our own, and talk with this blind person."

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday October 6th, 2005 11:24:58 PM

"I will go with you to the Tree of Parting and there introduce you to Folbre. T'is true we will not be welcomed by some, but Folbre knows me and will not turn us away. We should go under cover of darkness when we will be less noticeable. I suggest we head for shore soon for we are but an hour or two's walk from the Tree of Parting" Drosera replies to Harvest, Any and Andrath.

Thu takes Drosera's word as a signal to steer for shore and in a few short minutes the boats are beached and unloaded. Thu and Dens drag the boats into the trees where they won't be seen.

"We should wait here until just before dusk and then make our way to see Folbre" Drosera suggests. The party find themselves in a glade of tall trees, each with a circumference exceeding the reach of two men. The forest is quiet here. Only a moth disturbs the still air as it flutters beneath the canopy.

Harvest (HP 30/34)
Friday October 7th, 2005 10:18:35 AM

" ... What can we do to ensure ... "

" ... maybe we need to ... "

As they float down the stream, now every bit as pleasant as she had imagined, Harvest listens to snippets of conversation as they float over the water. She listens, and she ponders how ideas work together with actions. At what point should an idea that one deems to be good, be put to action? And, as one must live along side the wills and desires of others, to what extent must one curb the desire to turn idea to action in light of others?

The more Harvest ponders the question, the more elusive appears the answer. At one point, she finds her face formed in a deep frown. With a sigh, the small brown girl relinquishes her pursuit of the question, and, instead, forces her attention upon the act of guiding the boat through the water.

Later, within the glade, she does put though to action. New stocks of food appear no more than hours away. So, collecting all of the remaining rations, she draws forth a wand. With a trigger word, the cold rations warm. Harvest searches her memory for the taste of Hildy's chicken pie. Again, she casts the spell. Taking up a small piece of ration, Harvest nibbles a small bite. She blinks, and her brows lower. The taste seems right. But somehow, it's just not the same.

Arminas climbs to shore, anxious for the relative safety of a stand of old growth trees. The talk of enemies has him on edge though, so before he can sit and eat with Harvest he decides to check the perimeter. He walks around the trees, looking for tracks of whomever may have been there. Once he is sure they are alone, he settles down and enjoys a quiet meal. He calls the eagle down, and motions for her to stand guard. Arminas sits against a tree with his cloak wrapped about him. He looks down at the leaf that the Greenmage gave him, hoping that the green color of protection is still present. He then keeps watch for intruders.

Dens and Thu pull the boats ashore, and into the forest edge, spreading some dead and fallen branches over them in order to hide them from any who might pass by. Harvest makes a small meal with the last of the rations. Time is spent tidying up packsacks, and doing an inventory of gear.

As the party waits for the waning of the day, many ponder what lies ahead in the Emerald Kingdom.

Harvest (HP 30/34)  d20+13=31 d20+13=29 d20+11=17
Saturday October 8th, 2005 7:14:50 PM

Harvest Moon sits quietly and listens to Drosera's accounts of Parnoth and the Emerald Kingdom. The situation sounds very difficult. Even if they were somehow able to remove Parnoth, it seems that the people of this small kingdom would suffer. Invasion, lawlessness. Would the resulting chaos justify the freedom that would come from such a release?

"In one hand is Freedom, but Chaos as well, Little Boo. And in the other hand is The Rule of Law, but also the yoke of Tyranny. Pass the sand from one hand to the other. Both in one hand grow while the others lessen in the opposite hand. Freedom and Chaos. Law and Tyranny. They live on opposite ends of a staff, and the greatest comfort is a balance in between."

Harvest breaks from her reverie.

"It is not our place to free this Kingdom of Parnoth's rule," she says. "That is a thing that can only be accomplished by the people of the kingdom. And yet, there may be a way to convince the powers within this Kingdom, that it is unwise to pursue this campaign against the elves. Perhaps, as you say, Drosera, the Kingdom exists upon a delicate balance of between the cost of taking Parnoth's life, and the value of leaving him in his place, then it may be possible to pursue this balance, rather than the life of Parnoth himself."

Even as she speaks, though, Harvest Moon's eyes and ears probe the lengthening shadows of the grove. They watch the expressions as they move across the face of the elven sorceress. For, in a land in which spycraft is so openly fostered, it would be foolish not to be upon one's guard. Even, perhaps, against the one who describes her land in such a way.

"And what of the people of the Emerald Kingdom, Arminas Calaelen?" Harvest Moon asks. "You have heard of the delicate political balance within these lands. Without Parnoth, they risk enslavement by the Dark Lord of Izen. And there is no guarantee that the Dark Lord would stop at the Emerald Kingdom. There may be an evil to Parnoth, but there is also a preservation and stability. Without his presence, it may be possible that a devastation may visit the land, bringing slavery and worse than slavery."

"It may be far better to attempt to convince the powers within the Emerald Kingdom to withdraw their intentions upon the Culverwood. If Parnoth can be convinced that there is no threat from Ebyron and the Woods, if he can be convinced that an attack upon the elves of the Woods could throw his political balance into turmoil, he may just relinquish his current campaign of slavery."

"I would never have dreamed that we could ever defeat Parnoth, yet with the help of Ebyron we may do so. If we have power to defeat Parnoth, could we not also use that power to defeat the Dark Lord? Harvest, we may be on the fine edge of history. Our actions may create a Wold much better than we have had in the past. Ebyron may be our salvation."
