DM Bob & Carla Thursday October 13th, 2005 12:14:54 AM
With a quiet shnick Lorth draws his sword and positions his shield. Arminus and Any draw their bows and fix them on the armed men emerging from the forest. The bard is able to hide his elvish features in the hood of his cloak but there is no place to hide. The dark soldiers creep from the forest in a semicircle, trapping the party against the open water of the river.
Drosera wordlessly casts a spell, but none the less falls to her knees as Dens and Thu take up positions on either side of the dark haired elf, and a little ahead of her. Without their weapons they are no real threat to the advancing soldiers who stand about 30 ft. away.
Harvest Moon senses nothing false in the she-elf's fear as she whispers, "fall on your knees! Plead for mercy! They are Parnoth's men!"
Indeed, the seven soldiers that move to ring the party are uniformly dressed in black leather studded with gleaming bits of metal. A small metal shield is worn strapped to each forearm, and there is a longsword at each man's hip. A short tabard trimmed in green and gold with an ornamental EK embroidered over the heart is belted 'round each waist. On each head a domed helm with a protective nose piece shaped like a long horned snout, the sides flaring up and back like frilled 'ears' and two green gems at the brow like strange glowing eyes.
Behind these men, three tall, strange creatures. They are lizard-like in appearance, but different. The middle figure, female, it seems, wears dark robes. She is flanked by two males in similar garb as the soldiers, but with quivers from which the ends of fierce javelins protrude. "Thrick svent *vaecaesin*" * hisses one of the strange creatures. "Do not move!" calls one of the men in Common as the soldiers advance towards the party, "and hold your hands out where they can be seen!" A second man calls out, "who owns these elves? Have they legitimate authentification?"

Andrath Thursday October 13th, 2005 12:19:43 AM
Andrath draws his two swords, and moves in front of Drosera. "You can see my hands, and you can see that I am armed. Stop where you are and state your business. We are travellers heading to the Tree of Parting for a rest, then we will be on our way. We mean you no harm."
Villemus d20+2=21 Thursday October 13th, 2005 5:32:25 AM
"Ah milords, indeed we do have the necessary papers."
Villemus swiftly dug around his pack as he and produced an illusory stacks of papers, similarly to the ones carried by Drosera.
Moving carefully towards the soldiers, Villemus held the papers out as he whispered angrily at the lizardsman (in Draconic), "Highlight to display spoiler: {What are you doing here? The lordship commanded me to bring them to him. I have convinced them to followed me willingly and now you mess it all up.}"
As the disguised drow whispered, he let his face to fade into a vaguely draconic features before returning into a human one.

Bralin (Ac 21, 52/52 hp, divine favor 1/10) Thursday October 13th, 2005 7:56:08 AM
Others attempt to trick the soldiers, and so Bralin says nothing, in the event they are successful.
The dwarf also quietly invokes the tattoo under his armor and pulls out his axe, in the event they are not. [Brahmah's Tattoo - Divine Favor]
Harvest (AC22, Dodge AC23 vs Nearest Attacker, HP 30/34) d20+3=15 Thursday October 13th, 2005 10:23:56 AM Curious. Drosera invokes a spell at the same time that she surrenders herself to these troops of Parnoth. She watches the elven sorcerer's hands, but it is clear that much more study will be necessary before such things are possible.
It may not be wise to openly confront those with which one wishes to negotiate. Still ...
Harvest Moon makes no action that could be construed as the casting of a spell. Instead, she takes the wand from her haversack, the wand confiscated from Drosera yesterday evening. She drops it next to the prostrated sorceress. "Support us, please," she asks. Then Harvest Moon draws a scroll from her haversack and moves to a position at which the greatest number of her companions are nearby.

Tensions mount as several of the "Swords of Light" move cautiously in response to the command uttered by the human.
Lorth drops a warhammer at the feet of Drosera's guardian. The man doesn't move, but recognition of the gift can be read in the look in his eye and the almost imperceptable nod of his head. Harvest figures the dark haired elf must have a way of weaving magic without using words. The monk recognizes the subtle hand movements and realizes the sorceress is only trying to protect herself with a Shield spell. Any hides his true self behind an ugly facade while Bralin steadies himself for what is to come.
Andrath challenges the fighters in front of him as he steps in front of Drosera, but it is the drow who really draws everyone's attention! As Villemus advances, a sheaf of papers in his hand, the two fighters in front of him pause. The one who originally asked for the papers looks over his shoulder at the three lizard-like individuals, a puzzled look on his face. The startled man steps back, when Villemus addresses the beasts in their tongue, opening a path for the drow to approach the three. The female looks hard at Villemus for a moment, and then all hell breaks loose!
With a clear shot at the cloaked figure, Arminus looses two arrows. One flies wild, hitting a tree behind the female, while the second sails over her shoulder, just missing her frilled ear. With talons extended the wood elf's eagle flies at the creature, but misses. As Ewan pulls up, the eagle is swiped at visciously by the female and knocked to the ground. (Hit AC 22, for 9 pts. dmg). "Gerit *vireth*!" she cries. Those who understand Draconic Highlight to display spoiler: { "Get them!"}

A hard look from the female reptilian. The gambit has failed. Harvest Moon readies herself for the collapse of negotiations, but the first move is from Arminas Calaelen.
With a flick of her wrist, the scroll opens on its doweling. This spell is difficult, but Harvest Moon's study has favored her. Those around her fade from view, invisible to all but each other.
"Drosera," Harvest drops the now blank scroll, "if you wish your freedom, then aide us. We are invisible now. Take up your wand and use it upon Thu and Dens. We will fight. And we will win."
Harvest reaches behind herself, and with a thought, plucks out one of the captured longswords.
"Thu," is all that she says as she steps five feet in the man's direction and drops the sword to the ground.
The little monk's attention then goes to the three lizard-like beings. She eyes their accoutrements for religious iconography. What and who might these strange creatures be?

(OOC: Casting is a standard action, Lorth can move 20 ft. after). The brown girl, paladin, Drosera, her two bodyguards, and the rogue Andrath disappear from view. Andrath casts a protective spell, then steps out of the reach of Harvest's magic appearing in front of F4. Arminus and Anthos loose arrows, but only Any's arrow draws blood. With a shout, the fighter stumbles as the half-elf's arrow pierces through his thigh.
With a continued bluff, Villemus buys a moment during which he casts a spell. The drow's magic catches the fighter in front of him. With panic obvious on his face, he retreats a step before turning heel and fleeing into the woods. Bralin opts for magic as well, and the three lizard-like creatures wince. The female brings a hand up to one of her frilled ears a furious look on her angular face.
The fighters close on the Swords of Light while the tall lizard-folk stand, aloof and reserved observers. F1 moves forward to where he saw the paladin disappear, while F2 comes to the support of his injured comrade. The man slices at Any, however the bard's new mithril armor deflects the blade and he escapes with only a scratch from F2's sword (Hit AC 23, 2 dmg) and completely evades the wounded F3's blade. F4 slashes at Andrath, but misses the nimble rogue. F6 swings wide and misses the approaching Bralin, however his eyes light up as he spots F7 sweep behind the dark dwarf.
Dens and Thu stoop to pick up the dropped weapons, but Drosera remains prostrate on the ground. "Do you not know what they are? They are beasts created by the dark lord from one of Parnoth's claws!"
P2 inclines a scaly head towards the female, saying something that makes her laugh as he points to the spot where Andrath emerged. Harvest spots a circular medallion inscribed with three broken circles http://www.woldiangames.com/high_woldian/html/marteaus.htm hanging from a chain around the female's neck. The sounds of combat ring through the treed glen as the Swords of Light fight for their freedom against the soldiers of the Emerald Kingdom sent by Parnoth to scour the fringes of the Culverwood and round up any unclaimed elves.
Harvest Moon invokes her god, and her comrades are filled with courage. The monk draws out a wand as she implores Drosera to use hers.
Lorth charges the fighter flanking Bralin, scaring the man's face and cutting a deep wound across his chest. The fighter responds in kind hitting the paladin hard (hit AC 19 for 7dmg.)
The fighter opposite Bralin blanches when the dwarf's axe whistles past, missing the man by a hair. Disconcerted, he thrusts poorly and misses his target entirely.
Andrath figures out what the strange sorceress is up too and warns his friends. He is unable to discern if his own magic has been affected, and doesn't have time to dwell on the matter since there is an opponent demanding his attention. Despite the cool of the approaching evening, the combatants glow with the exertion of combat. Any shifts position after missing his man. The two fighters close on the half elf pressing him hard. The wounded man misses with his sword, but the second fighter strikes true. Once again the bard's new amour deflects most of the damage. (Hit AC 22, 2 HP dmg).
Andrath comes on to his man, but misses with both sword and dagger. Showing fierce determination the soldier from the Emerald Kingdom swings down with all his might and deals the elven rogue a glancing blow (Hit AC 26, confirmed critical with a 21, 13 HP dmg.) Andrath quickly realizes the magic of his Shield no longer protects him.
The opponent facing Bralin receives a terrible blow to the sholder, crippling his off arm. He takes a feeble stab at the dwarf, and misses.
Unsure if his god's favour is still upon him, Lorth none the less continues his attack on the fighter in front of him with grievous results for Parnoth's man. In a last ditch effort, the fighter lunges furiously at the paladin slashing him with his sword (Hit AC 25, no critical with 15, for 8 HP dmg).
Arminus walks calmly towards the strange female, his bow in hand. He carefully maneuvers around the combatants as if they were of no consequence. [i](OOC: Not that it would help this time, but for future reference, elves get a +2 racial saving throw vs enchantment spells or effects (p. 16 PHB) and Suggestion is an enchantment. ) He is met by P2, net in hand.
The drow successfully casts a spell on himself, hoping it will aid his escape. Villemus never gives up his bluff, but the half dragon creature pulling at the ropes of the net will have nothing of it. Meanwhile, in a bold move, Harvest runs and tumbles through combat to face off with Villemus captor. The beast strikes out with it's clawed hand while the other holds the ropes to the net. The brown monk learns the hard way that her magical armor no longer protects her. (Hit AC 30 for 9 HP dmg)
Drosera taps Dens with her wand. The man enlarges and brings Lorth's warhammer down on the fighter in front of him wounding him. The fighter swings his sword at the big target, but somehow misses.
With a clear view to the dark haired sorceress, the scaly female is witness to the banded elf's treason. Reaching out a splayed hand, she hisses a word of magic and 4 balls of magical energy are unleashed at the unsuspecting Drosera. Pf then takes one step forward.

Any still cannot seem to find his taget amidst all the battle, and his attacks again go wide of the mark on his opponent (Hit AC 12 & 14 can't roll a hit!). He continues to maneuver, trying to put one of his attackers in front of the other while he battles, choosing to focus on the injured man.

Bralin observes Harvest's combat with the lizard holding Villemus, and makes a decision.
That one is a threat. The man he is fighting is not. With Lorth and Dens soon to finish off their opponents, his current man will have but two swings remaining in his life, and they will not be sufficient.
The dwarf breaks off combat with F6, crosses quickly over to the lizard, and plants his axe into it.
[Diagonally cross to I-6 - inviting an AoO from F6] [ATK P1 hitting ac 21 for 11 hp damage]

The balls of light. Perhaps she had misinterpreted the nature of the female Claw. The symbol of Marteaus. An affectation, not a holy symbol?
Harvest changes plans as she sees Bralin Stonemind walk straight between the vice jaws of the two Claws.
"ANDRATH SILVERHAND!" she cries. "Switch! Attack the Claw with Bralin Stoneminder!"
Then she tumbles away, rolling up on the other side of Andrath's opponent and delivering a blow to the kidney designed to stun.
Note to Andrath Figured we could get more mileage from switching opponents. You with your Sneak would cause the Claw much more damage on the Flanking. I'll keep F4 company.

OOC: I am confused as to the power of the suggestion over the rest of my actions, I will assume my only desire is to give the weapons to the sorceress.
Arminas walks toward the sorceress, when the male lizard creature steps in his path, net in hand.
"Out of my way, the woman has need of my weapons."
Arminas then draws his sword.
If he does not give way, and threatens Arminas with the net, Arminas will attack him with his sword while attempting to dodge the net.
If he gives way, Arminas will then walk over to her and hand her his bow. He will then hand over his sword. He then starts pulling arrows from his quiver to hand to her. He has almost 60, so it will take time. He will hand each weapon to her. She clearly stated that I was to surrender my weapons to her. Laying them on the ground will not do.

Andrath winces as the fighter strikes him with the sword swing. He suddenly realizes that his shield spell is no longer functioning, so he had better hope that his luck turns better in a hurry.
He sees that Bralin has moved to attack the lizard creature, and he tumbles to his right [OOC: tumble check of 28, so no attacks of opportunity, move to K-6]. He swings his sword at P1. [OOC: Hit AC18 for 6+11 is 17 total damage.]

As the advocate of the earth crosses in front of the half-dragon fighter, P1 swipes him with his tail (Hit AC 25 for 11 HP dmg). The wounded fighter (F6) moves to stand over the body of his companion and lashes out at the one who slew him. He misses Lorth as his swing goes wide.
When Arminus commands the scaly fighter to get out of his way, then raises his sword at the creature, the beast casts his net. "Headssstrong elf, you will sssubmit! Ssslave to the Ssserpent isss your fate!" The unfortunate ranger is caught in the barbed mesh. (Ranged touch attack=24, Strength Check=26).
Andrath deftly maneuvers into position opposite Bralin, sandwiching the half-dragon holding the net containing the squirming Villemus. The creature claws the rogue (Hit AC 30, 15 HP dmg) then proceeds to drag the captured drow towards the edge of the wood. The female with the token of Marteaus about her neck sees Andrath's clever stunt, and targets the elf with her magic. Holding out a small piece of iron she mutters an incantation intending to enchant Andrath and freeze him in place. (Will Save vs DC 17 or be Held for 10 rounds).
Exchanging places with the elf, Harvest stuns the fighter, who drops his weapon. Not far away Any continues to dance around his opponents successfully avoiding their swords.
Thu moves towards his companions while Dens keeps the fighter from Drosera. The man takes a sword to the gut for his pains. The sorceress weaves a spell, and suddenly is gone from sight.

Harvest draws another wand from her haversack.
"You!" the small girl scowls and looks up at the unarmed man from under the brown crest of hair that hangs over her forehead. "You! Go!"

Arminas needs to get to the female, she needs him to surrender his weapons. Noticing that the net is designed to keep someone from running away, he instead moves toward the lizard man, hopefully causing some slack. Letting go of his bow and sword, he reaches down to his belt and draws a dagger in each hand. Turning the blades ever so slightly, he attempts to cut away the net.

The lizard avoids a sure blow and counters with its tail? Bralin's mouth sets. A true threat indeed.
He calls out to the paladin. "Lorth, these are strong. We require aid."
Still, the paladin is engaged. And Bralin is uncertain he will be able to fell this foe alone. A change in tactics, then.
Bralin turns, and brings his axe down upon the rope linking the lizard and Villemus. He then steps into the path, separating the two.

The dwarf calls for Lorth, but the paladin is occupied. Even though he has lost the magic of divine favour, Lorth manages to dispatch his enemy and send another soul to the shadow lands and judgment at the will of his god.
A look of surprise flickers in the slanted green eyes of the lizard-like fighter as Bralin positions himself in front of the creature. Still holding an end of the rope in one hand, it slashes out with it's free claw, hissing "filthy drow lover!" Perhaps it is the height discrpancy or perhaps sheer dumb luck, but the dwarf esapes the attack.
Arminus works at cutting himself from the net entangling him. The ranger is almost free when the half-dragon yanks the net in an attempt to trip the elf. The beast only succeeds in pulling the remnants of the destroyed net free of Arminus!
Harvest gives the wounded F4 an ultimatum. The man doesn't take long to think it over. With a sly look, his hands raised to shoulder height; he slowly sidles away from the girl.
Any and the two fighters continue their dangerous dance of death. The bard manages to land a serious blow to the already wounded F3. The man staggers awkwardly, blood flowing freely from the two wounds inflicted by the bard. This seems to galvanize the two men and they attack the half-elf with new fury. (F2 hits AC 22 for 8 dmg, F3 hits AC 25, crit 16 (no) for 9 dmg.)
Thu swings and misses, but Dens hammers on his adversary, wounding him. The man stabs at the enlarged ex-slaver, but misses. Meanwhile, Drosera is no where to be seen.

From the corner of her eye, Harvest Moon spies what she knew would most likely happen.
"The choice is yours," she calls out. Dropping the wand of True Strike, she steps around the tree to confront the man who has chosen a path in life that must necessarily intersect with hers. "I have given you opportunity and warning," she says without looking at the man. Harvest draws a scroll from her haversack. "You may continue to contend with us. But if you do, you will be shown no further mercy."
With an eye on the unarmed man, the small girl flicks the scroll open and quickly reads the contents aloud. A stab of her finger sends a dark ray at one of the Claws, draining away it's strength.
Only then does she return her full attention to the man.
"You may attempt to regain your weapon if you wish. But I will tell you that I am swift enough to hit you as you bend down, with the same pain that you felt before. And so the question you must ask yourself is this, 'Do I feel lucky?'"

Running her long thin fingers with their sharp talons caressingly over the recurve of the longbow the sorceress admires the weapon surrendered by the ranger. Looking directly into the wood elves eyes, she holds the bow shoulder width apart and snaps it in two, dropping the broken weapon at her feet. (Arminus Will Save vs DC 16 to shake off Suggestion)
Bralin swings futilely at the half-dragon fighter as Lorth moves into position and places a healing hand on the dwarf. (OOC: Lorth's movement is 30 ft., 20 ft. with his pack. We will accept that Lorth can move 30ft., thus avoiding the AoO as noted above, but he will not have the benefit of his pack which is in O10 against the tree near where Lorth was when things started out.)
Before the scaly fighter can attack the Swords of Light in front of him,Harvest targets him with her spell. With a roar of fury the creature launches into his attack, but the spell has had a detrimental affect and the beast gets the dwarf with only one claw (Hit AC 22 for 8 dmg. ) Sweeping 'round the tail catches the paladin hard in the midsection (Hit AC 21 for 8 dmg.) P2 moves in to help his kin, swiping at Bralin with his tail. (Hit AC 27 for 9 dmg.)
The fighter (F4) in front of Harvest ducks his head as he backs away. In the flash of an instant the monk sees the man pull a dagger and intercept Andrath on his way to help his friends. The dragon helmed fighter presses the rogue against the tree, knifing him in the ribs. (Hit AC 23, for 3 dmg.) Still recovering from his ordeal, Any follows Andrath, leaving the critically wounded and blind F2 writhing and screaming where he fell.
Dens recieves another slice to the gut, and hunches over. Dropping his weapon he wraps his arms around his abdomen, but it is too late.

Harvest Moon mentally shakes her head at the actions of the dragon helmed fighter. Perhaps it is the nature of evil to value the pursuit of the enslavement of others even over one's own life.
From the corner of her eye, Harvest sees Dens fall. "Drosera?" she calls out. The sorceress has the wand. Why does she not use it? Fear is a powerful force. It's ugly hand is seen often in the Contested Kingdoms. Inaction from Fear is an understandable thing. And yet, somehow, this leaves a bitter taste. Bitter indeed.
In silence, Harvest draws another scroll from her pack. The last of it's kind in her possession. Again she reads and the written words vanish as they are spoken. Again she points and the dark ray jumps forward. This time, though, her aim is not as sure. Without assurance of the results, the brown girl discards the empty scroll.
"You have yet another wound," Harvest Moon points out to the man who as remained in the fight only to be struck by Anthos Westar. "You are alone, in the midst of enemies. Flee and live. Remain and die."

Villemus casts a spell at the creature to the north (Pf) but there is no apparent effect [Fort Save=27]
F4 turns on his new attacker, and attempts to knife the bard, but his blade falls short of finding it's mark. Thu and F1 exchange blows, but neither gives way.
Harvest targets the other reptilian (P2) with her ray spell but is unsure of what affect it may have had, for the creature turns savagely on Bralin and mauls the dwarf before her eyes [Hit AC=30,36,35 for 26 HP]. The fierce creature stands menacingly over the fallen cleric.
Lorth too pays a dear price for drawing the attention of such hideous creatures. The foe he had so grievoulsy wounded tears into the paladin striking him with its claws and clamping down on his shoulder with its powerful jaws and teeth [Hit AC=28,31,24 for 15 HP]
Arminus finally recovers from his reverie and slashes at the female that snapped his beautiful bow, carving a cruel scar across her cheek. Retribution is swift and violent. Even as he swooned Arminus caught, as though through a swirling mist, a glimpse of some bright shape lifting into the air from behind the evil sorceress. As darkness overcame him, he had the sense that some small part of him was still alive.
Witnessing the fall of the stalwart Bralin, Lorth wields the mighty sword of Jaradosta with a vengeance. Rather than attack again, the wounded creature (P1) retreats to a position beside the scaly sorceress.
Harvest advances towards the paladin with her healing touch. As she does so there is the faintest tickle of magic against her ear, as if an invisible messenger is trying to whisper something to her. Highlight to display spoiler: { "Live! Live to fight again, friend." Harvest recognizes Drosera's voice. With deathly accuracy, Any dispatches his opponent, clearing the immediate area of any enemy. (OOC: Any can use his weapons, or cast his spell, but not both!) Andrath is unable to connect with the half-dragon, but it does not strike back. It, too, retreats to join the female. Villemus buffs up, fearful of what might come next.

A bank of fog billows out from a point near Andrath. The fog obscures all sight, and it is so thick that those within its confines move with the greatest difficulty. (Solid Fog-p. 281 PHB).
"Enough of this nonsenssse! Hisss lordship will be most dissspleasssed! booms through the dense vapor. With a low whooshing sound the fog withdraws back to its point of origin, as if a genie retreating into it's bottle. Those of the party left standing see they are ringed by Parnoth's men standing shoulder to shoulder, spears trained forward. Lorth, Harvest, Villemus, and Andrath rush to stabilize Bralin, while Any goes to Arminus' aid. All around them the soldiers of the Emerald Kingdom close in, the sharp ends of their spears inches from the Swords of Light.
"Disssarm them and bind them!" repeats the big Parnothian leading the reinforcements, "if one should ssspeak the ancient magicsss...gag him!"
The soldiers do as they are commanded. Each member of the party is surrounded by half a dozen men. Weapons and arms are confiscated. Potions and scrolls and other items of value are collected and placed in sacs and piled in a heap along with the packsacks and their contents. (Roll Sleight of Hand check for any small items you may try to hide on your person.) Armour is stripped off and added to the growing pile. The soldier stripping Bralin hesitates when he spots the pin badge with the three tines marking the dwarf as an Initiate of the WLA. He takes the dark armour, but leaves the pin hanging loosely from the fighter's under-tunic. Wrists are bound tightly with rope, and the party is marched off, battered and bleeding, through the wood. A vigilant escort of half a dozen soldiers 'round each prisoner.
+++++
Torches cast frightening shadows into the forest as the group is marched into the encampment. It is nearing the middle of the night and the party has had no food or water. Uniformed men cluster near small fires, warming themselves or taking food. Each fire has a cluster of small tents nearby. Men look up as the group troupes by, but others stare distantly into the fires in front of them. In the middle of the encampment, there is a makeshift corral of ropes tied 'round spikes sunk into the ground. The enclosure is well guarded with soldiers stationed all around. Inside this enclosure ten, maybe a dozen prisoners in manacles sit quietly knees clasped to chest for warmth, or in small groups, comforting one another.
Ropes are loosened only to be replaced by manacles and shackles at wrists and ankles and the group is ushered into the coral. "Get some rest," a guard says as one of the party stumbles, we march for The Emerald City at dawn." A second voice adds, "'an don't try anythin' funny." Pointing out a tripod made from three large spears lashed together, "floggin's the punishment for those who try 'an escape."

Bralin is somewhat surprised the guard leaves his WLA pin. Mayhap even Parnoth has some respect for that organization. The dwarf tucks that information away as he is marched through the encampment. He takes note of numbers and positions, though he doubts escape will be available this night.
Lorth is sulking, so Bralin lets him be. Unlike himself, the paladin has likely never been prisoner before. The dwarf seeks out Andrath and Harvest in the dark. "Know ye the distance to Emerald City?" he asks. The number of nights available is useful information.
Bralin watches the guards and their shifts. As a test, he works himself slowly into the middle of the small corral, and casts a spell.

In the enclosure of the slaver encampment, Harvest makes rounds to attend to the wounds of not only her group, but those of all of the captured slaves. Long into the already long night, heedless of the fatigue that will surely come with the morn. (Longterm care: Hopefully twice the healing rate for all.)
"The Tree of Parting is east of Emerald City, Bralin Stoneminder," Harvest considers all of the things she had talked over with Drosera the day before, all of the things about her land, the Emerald Kingdom. "I believe that we are near a trade road that travels west and then north to the City. From Drosera's description, I do not believe it to be many days."
To Anthos Westar she whispers, "Our destination is Emerald City. It may be best to allow the stream of circumstance to take us there before fighting against the current of events."

In the darkness of the corral each member of the Swords of Light revisit the ignominious treatment received in the grove and plan their next actions.
Bralin remembers the look of the man who stripped him of his armor; how on spotting the insignia of the WLA the man had seemed almost embarrassed, and how he had returned the polished black stone to the dwarf's pocket muttering something about boyhood sentimentalism. Bralin's dark eyes take in the number of the troops and figures there must be at least 60, but he is not sure. There seem to be 5 or 6 guards around the enclosure, but then the corral is in the very middle of the camp. Wisely, he decides against an attempt at escape. Not so wisely he decides to channel some magic through his stone. Casting involves an oral incantation spoken in a strong voice.
The man searching Harvest is as thorough as he is rough. His calloused hands grab the wand before the girl can fully conceal it, and her voluminous robes hide little else. The crude wooden carving of a lidless eye is callously cast aside and lands amongst the detritus of the forest floor. The monk submits to being bound and later manacled and shackled. Despite these encumbrances and without her wand or holy symbol the girl attempts to minister to those in need. She is able to help the six members of her party, but no others, in the short time before dawn spreads her pearly light across the sky.
Any is caught in the act of palming a small dagger. The weapon is collected and for his trouble the bard has his hands tied tightly behind his back. As such he is unable to make the precise movements required to discharge the healing spell. Fearing that the half elf's humming will lead to a song of incantation; the soldier takes a soiled rag from his pocket, and gags the bard. (OOC: For future reference, bard spells have a verbal component (singing, reciting, or music). Unless Any has chosen humming for his Perform, he must sing in a strong voice or play his lute.) The gag is removed when Any is placed in the corral, thought the warning of " 'an don't try anythin' funny" is repeated for his benefit.
A distraught Arminus plays dumb, the gift of the Greenmage hidden under his tongue. The wood-elf submits to the rough treatment of the soldiers with nary a word. Inside the corral, he shuffles about, his movements limited by the shackles placed around his ankles. The ranger looks about for some nocturnal creature that might carry a message to Grynntym Deeproot. The elf is fortunate for nesting inside the hollow of a nearby tree is an eight inch owl with tufted ears. With a quavering whistle the little screech owl swoops past the guards and collects the token from the elf. (OOC:Speak with Animals requires Verbal (spoken incantation in a strong voice) and Somatic (measured and precise movement of the hand. You must have at least one hand free to provide a somatic component -PHB p. 174) components.)
While patting down Andrath, the soldier is surprised by the rat inside his shirt. "Filthy elf!" the soldier mutters as the rat escapes. The man continues to strip the rogue of his weapons, but misses the deft movement that results in the concealment of the rogue's tools. Later, curled up on the cold ground, trying to keep warm, Andrath feels a small furry creature snuggle into his chest.
Villemus headdress goes unnoticed, but his pouch does not. The soldier picks it up and tosses it onto the pile of accumulated gear. Bone makes his escape unseen, however like his compatriot, finds his way through the encampment and back to the captured drow.
Lorth doesn't speak to anyone, and keeps to himself. He is, however witness to the anger of the guards when several of his party decide to try their magics, benign as they may seem. The early morning hours bring unwelcome commotion as Bralin and Arminus are dragged from the enclosure. Those inside the corral are quickly doled out a crust of stale bread and a cup of water while the offenders are strung up and whipped. (Whipping results in subdual dmg. Bralin-18 HP, Arminus-14 HP however the punishment stops when the elf loses consciousness.)

Shackled together side by side in two long lines, the Swords of Light and the other captured elves shuffle down the road leading to the Emerald City. Harvest Moon has been able to figure that a lightly encumbered traveller in a hurry could manage the trip in a day, most would need two. At the rate the group is moving, it will be at least three long days before the city is reached.
The bulk of the troops march in front, the prisoners guarded on either side by riders on black horses, with more soldiers bringing up in the rear.
"What do you figure will happen to them?" a rider is overhead asking when his captain makes a check. The reply comes in a hoarse voice, "they are spies. Keep them with the elves. They will be dealt with after the cuffing ceremony."

"I am Lorth Jeredosta, Paladin of Gargul", he says. "One of the heros of the Battle of Strongwind castle against the Dread, surely you must of heard of it. But regardless, being a paladin you know that my word is my law. Sitting around in this "jail" is something that grates upon me. I ask you to allow me to help you with camp duties such as chopping firewood, feeding the prisoners, setting up and breaking down and whatever else is needed to be done. Dark shadows rim the flesh below Harvest Moon's brown eyes as she turns her face toward the morning sun. For as long as she dare, the brown girl sits in meditation. The wooden knot is gone. It had been with her for so many years, ever since she dug it from the ground oh so long ago. Now it is gone.
And yet, still her spirit reaches out. For what she is unsure. Is there a greater divinity beyond one's chosen god? Harvest Moon prays. Against the lure of sleep, she prays.
"Three days, Bralin Stoneminder," Harvest whispers a reply as the group moves slowly along the road. "Possibly two, but most likely three days before we reach the Emerald City. She inspects the condition of the dwarf's wounds, but her mind swims from the need for rest.

Arminas smiles slightly as the owl takes the leaf and flies off. Nothing will probably come of it, but it is all he could do. The whipping comes, he knew it probably would.
He smiles weakly at Bralin as he is strung up, but does not speak. The whips strikes him, and he recoils in pain. He admires the abilitiy of the dwarf to deal with pain, and tries to emulate him. His thoughts turn to Ewan and the owl as the blows come, and is thankful when finally he blacks out.
The soldiers come and force him to stand, time to march. Again he thinks of Any, and the torture that is resulting from his healing. Dark thoughts rush through his mind, and again he thinks of Ewan and the owl to force them out.
As the horses with riders go back and forth, Arminas looks for which animal is likely be nearby most often. Kind looks and soft words are spoken to the horse. If the rider looks at him, he weakly says:
"You must be a strong warrior, you have a wonderful horse."
Every chance he gets, he greets that horse with kindness.

At the end of the day, he again greets the horse, and looks up meekly at the rider.

If allowed he will sing a light song of traveling, striving to emphasize friendship and peace.
He notices Arminas and his piercing looks, and will attempt to soften his attitude as they walk. He whispers, " They would not have let you die, they seek us as slaves. I only performed the healing that they would have done. To live is to have hope."

Bralin no sooner finishes his spell than the guards are upon him. "I am but healing my wounds," he says to uncaring faces.
Soon he finds himself beneath the whip. Again, the irony of being partnered with Arminas does not escape him.
The dwarf's mind turns to the chamber, and he silently endures the punishment. Lorth's offer to help about the camp is cruelly rebuffed, "You're an elf lover and a spy! Save your energy for the galley, traitor!" Meanwhile, the horse near Arminus looks at the elf with warm liquid eyes, but before the ranger can establish a connection, the rider steers the horse away. Harvest is able to covertly minister to the wounds of Bralin and Arminus. The young monk is appalled by the bruised flesh and crusty oozing sores that scar the backs of her companions.
After a long day of marching, the prisoners are corralled for the night and a heavy guard set. A little water is provided, but no food. The soldiers set up their tents in circles around the enclosure. There is no escape.
+++++
The next couple of days are the same. After a crust of bread and a cup of water, long chains are run through the manacles joining the prisoners in two rows side by side. The excess chain must be gathered up and held in the hands so as not to pull at the manacles. On the eve of the third day, the party reaches the city. As they pass through the streets, the citizens back up against the buildings that line the streets and watch as the troops pass by with the captured elves and half elves, two humans, and a dwarf. The city seems to have a mixed population of some affluence, for the people appear in general to be richly dressed. There are elves, and part elves in the crowd. Every one wears a closed bracelet upon one wrist.
+++++
The march leads to a great grey mass of a building with eight almost identical towers pining it to the rock on which it stands. The group passes up a long stepped ramp from road level to a point where a drawbridge meets it. Under the bridge is a moat. Passing over the bridge, the party enters through the outer gate and into an inner ward. The riders go no further, but soldiers lead the prisoners through another gate. Bowmen look down from the machicolations of the barbican as the party moves through. On one side against the curtain wall is a range of buildings, beyond it a dark tower to which the group are taken. Chains are taken back, and still manacled and shackled; the prisoners are divided up and pushed into various cells. As the lock to the door closes with a *click* the Swords of Light find themselves together in one of these dark cells.

The second night of the trek is devoted to sleep. One cannot aide others if one is, one's self, incapacities.
The next morning holds a fresher outlook. Harvest Moon speaks with the other captives as they trek along the road. This day her wits are sharper, and her eye to healing care is more keen.
Harvest Moon shuts her eyes as the door to the cell closes behind her. She listens. Listens to the sound of footsteps. The sound of speech. The sounds that may give rhythm to the place and reveal its secrets.
When she opens her eyes she see's the place in light of what her ears have whispered to her, the things that might be of use. Lessons from the camps of the Contested Kingdoms: Hidden within everything is a potential use. One need but find the proper questions by which one might coax the thing to speak.
"Paladin Lorth," Harvest Moon begins, "would it be possible for you to attempt to detect the presence of any Evil within our area? It may be to no avail. But it may also prove illuminating."

Arminas keeps to himself, anger and self pity seem to always be on the verge of taking over. Only when he thinks of Ewan does his mind clear, and a feeling a peace comes over him.
Did I see Ewan rise and fly away, or was it merely a dream?
Regardless, it gives him hope. If not for himself, then at least for his friend.
He speaks only to Harvest, as she administers to his wounds.
"Thanks for your kindness, though I plan on death over slavery, if it comes to it. I am only sorry that the others are caught up in this as well, perhaps my actions have resulted in this. Though I blame Parnoth, not myself."

OOC MOO! Should be at full hit points due to overnight healing.
Any assists wherever he can in aiding those who are injured and in need of healing, tearing his shirt for bandages, and saving some of his water for the cleansing of wounds.
Having not been forbidden to sing, he does sing to lighten the spirits of those around him. (Inspire courage) He can only extend his power for a short time each day, but does so unbegrudgeingly. The rest of the time he sings, he does do simply to give hope to those who hear.
Any is disheartened when he sees there is no chance given to attempt an escape, the guards are too vigilant.
Upon arriving in the cell, he immediately begins to examine his surroundings. He carefully looks at the lock when the guards are not watching, and begins to wish that he could find even a short piece of wire or stout wood(search 16).
Bralin Wednesday November 2nd, 2005 10:01:15 PM
The march passes, and the guards show no sign of laxity. Bralin nods with grudging approval. They are well trained.
The dwarf will therefore bide his time. Once locked in the cell, he sits for a bit. But the activity of Harvest and Any fires his curiousity, and Bralin determines to inspect the stonework of the room the contains him.
He does so very carefully. He surely has the time. [Search for unusual stonework - Take 20: 24]
Andrath Thursday November 3rd, 2005 12:24:23 AM
On the move, Andrath stashes his rat inside his undershirt, letting the creature out after dark to forage a little bit. He saves some of his evening meal to feed the rodent.
When they are locked in the cell, Andrath whispers, "I was able to palm my rogue tools, so I can probably pick our way out of this cell, if we had somewhere to go."
DM Bob & Carla Thursday November 3rd, 2005 1:26:38 AM
Eyes adjust to the dimness of the cell, and the adventurers' begin to explore the grey environment.
Entrance is by a narrow doorway, now closed off by a locked door of thick wood with a small barred window. The room is roughly square, although the back wall has a curve to it. There is a short flight of four steps that disappear into the wall. Exploration shows that this is a latrine corbelled out over the moat at an angle between the tower and curtain wall. Two narrow loops in the curved wall let in a little light and air. There are some scorch marks on the walls in addition to quite a bit of graffiti,
.......ORCS SMELL......
......DWRVES RUEL, ELVS DRUEL...
....Elwood was here...
and many seasons counted out with a scratch on the stone underneath the announcement.
Inside the cell Bralin studies the compact stonework. The tower is well built, and the outer curved wall thick. Cells rim the outer wall of the tower, with a central room for the processing of prisoners and stationing of the guard. Near the back of the cell, where one partition wall meets the curved outer wall, Bralin finds an anomaly. The mortar around one stone seems to have been chipped away.
As Harvest Moon and Arminus inspect the cell, they hear snippets of conversation echoing from the guardroom, "...in a rage...had a bad time of it with the last bunch...put it over there...in storage...no, not there, over there...not for a few days yet...have the ceremony when he comes back...need 'bout forty maybe 50..." There are also whispers. Harvest can not make out the language, but Arminus is able to discern it is elvish, though he can not make out the words.
A continued search about the room discloses some rusted hooks in the wall at regularly spaced intervals, a scattering of small stones in one corner, and a pile of grey rags in another. Andrath volunteers that he managed to keep his special tools from the soldiers. When Any tries to bolster spirits with a song, the pile of rags stirs..
The party continues to look after each other. Time heals some wounds, but the scars on the back of the elf and dwarf will be permanent reminders of the cruelty of Parnoth's rule for as long as the adventurers live.

Suddenly, the brown girl tips her head to one side in an attitude of curiosity.

Any also goes to investigate the movements of their "cellmate". He quickly agrees with Arnimas, and begins to sing, not so loudly as to draw the guards to the cell, but loudly enough to cover conversation and Arminas' spell casting if needed. Checking that his companions are watching for the guards, the dwarf carefully tries to pull the stone inward. If he cannot, he will investigate whether one or more of the hooks can be removed for the endeavor.
DM Bob & Carla Thursday November 3rd, 2005 11:42:17 PM
While Lorth finds a comfortable spot on the floor, the others busy themselves with investigating their surroundings and contemplating a posible escape.
Bralin eases a single stone from its position in the cell wall and discovers a small hollow that hides a gold chain with a single golden disc bearing the likeness of a roaring lion. It does not look like the chain has been in the hiding place for long. The shine has not left either the chain or the disc.
Harvest and Arminus approach the pile of rags that caught their attention. To their surprise, the rag pile stretches out and assumes the shape of an elf dressed in a rumpled tunic and an even dirtier and more crumpled cloak. "Hello" he says, in a calm, quiet voice. "I take it you've just arrived then." The figure allows the cloak to fall to his shoulders revealing an ageless face, neither old nor young, though in it is written years of experience. His silver hair lays matted on his shoulders, and his clear grey eyes shine with an inner calm.
Any sings lightly and keeps an eye on the guards through the small window in the door. None show any interest in the goings on in the cell.

From the corner of her eye, Harvest takes in the hole and the stone removed from it. She catches the glint of the gold disc within the dwarf's hand, and her eyes return immediately to the gray eyed elf. He is possibly the owner. And yet, in deference to Bralin Stoneminder, she says nothing.
"We were captured at the edge of the Culverwood three days ago," Harvest offers instead. "We were sent by the Greenmage of the Culverwood to speak to the Council of Elders. We would persuade them to influence Parnoth to break off his incursion into the Culverwood. It is a path, we believe, that brings tragedy and turmoil for all."
"I understand that we are destined for slavery. Even so, we would escape to see the Council here in Emerald City and fulfill our mission."

Villemus Monday November 7th, 2005 12:02:29 AM
Moving closer to his companions, Villemus whispered, "Without my spellbook, I can't memorise any new spells. However, they didn't find my hat of disguise." The half-drow pointed at one of the beads that adored his mangy hair.
"I got a plan. I can disguise myself as one of the gaoler and pretended that I was trapped with you and gravely wounded. The dastardly drow had casted a spell and swapped places with me. And when the gaoler comes in ..."
DM Bob & Carla Monday November 7th, 2005 7:59:41 AM
Lorth remains where he is, displeased with his predicament and with no obvious course of action, he simply waits. Harvest introduces herself and her mission to the elf beneath the rags. Arminus quickly counsels caution, but not before Harvest has spilled the beans.
"Your friend is right", the elf says to Harvest. "It is hard to know who to trust in such difficult times. But I am no spy and your secret is safe with me." The bedraggled elf simply shakes his head when Bralin inquires about the pendant and returns to Harvest. "My name is Solonn and I was captured some weeks ago as I travelled through the Culverwood. The elf stands and offers his hand in introduction. "Peace be with you all" he says before sitting back down. He motions to Harvest to take a seat. "I am interested" he says, "just how would you persuade this Council, and what would influence Parnoth to cease his push into the Culverwood?"
Bralin detects a moderate aura of transmutation about the pendant after spending a few moments of concentration.
Villemus broaches a plan for escape, but before he can further detail his plan Any spots the guards approaching the cell door. A moment later a large bowl and two loafs of bread are shoved through a small slot at the bottom of the door. A thin, near colorless liquid fills the bowl, large bubbles of liquid fat compete with each other for space across the surface. The bread is hard and smells of yeast.
Lorth Monday November 7th, 2005 8:46:44 AM
Lorth listens to the new elfs tale then eyes the food suspiciously, when it is thrust under the door. He only eats the bread if offered it, as he certainly doesn't need any extra fat since he isn't doing anything but sitting around.
Any Monday November 7th, 2005 9:47:38 AM
Any takes one look at the food offered, shrugs his shoulders, and begins to doll out soup and bread to those who wish it, breaking the bread and offering the bowl to all in the cell.
He then whispers, " I can cast many of the spells I know without any extra materials, including disguising myself. The guards might hear the spell being cast however. There is a possibility, since they are allowing me to sing, that I can put the guards asleep. As long as I can speak or sing I can cast spells, including healing, if any are still in need."
Having offerd his input, Any returns to his position near the door, singing lightly to cover the conversation inside the cell.
Harvest (AC18, HP 31/34) Monday November 7th, 2005 9:59:43 AM
Harvest Moon glances with curiosity at the bright object in Bralin Stoneminder's hands.
"Our mission requires little secrecy, Solonn," Harvest replies. "Stealth, perhaps, but little secrecy. We were only sent to speak to the Council of Elders, after all."
The small brown girl crosses her legs within the folds of her robe and places her hands in her lap as she mentally composes a reply.
"I have spoken at length with one from this land about it's society and politics. It was only one night's discussion, but I received a profound impression of a kingdom in delicate balance. Parnoth, plays the fears of many enemies against each other. He stands as a guard between the forest to the north and the giants of the Red Hills to the south. Attacking Parnoth would require resources from either side, and weaken forces that would invite invasion. By raiding the Culverwood for elven slaves, he draws both suspicion and reaction. Already there are rumors of an army of Fey being amassed against him. Reaction against action. If fears spread that Parnoth sends forth armies, his balance of powers could be damaged beyond repair. I have seen this happen in the Contested Kingdoms."
"Parnoth further jeopardizes his trade. Fear of imprisonment will easily drive away the trade that the dragon has worked to draw along the southern road. It is not difficult to imagine that war, could cut off trade entirely."
"These are not difficult things to conceive of, Solonn. I cannot imagine that many on the Council of Elders have already considered these points. The problem that remains is what to do about it."
"At the moment, Panoth has a loosely and growing population of elven slaves. Should he rescind his edict enslaving elves and restore their status, he may yet regain an uneasy alliance, and replace what can only be an increasing burden, and a possible explosive situation. Free citizens always work harder and fight more fiercely than slaves."
"We have the backing of both the Greenmage of Culverwoods and the Pitchfork Council in Jarlwolf. Both the Greenmage and the Pitchfork Council would be happy spread the word and to steer the refugees back toward their rightful homes. Stability, I believe, is in Parnoth's best interest."
"Please, Villemus Bralfah, Anthos Westar," Harvest takes a break from her discussion with Solonn to comment upon plans for escape, "take care in which guard you choose to disguise yourself as. If we attempt a ruse of this type, we will likely have but one chance."

"Escape from this cell can be done," he says. "Escape from this building is more difficult. Escape from this city more difficult still. We are deprived of arms and armor. We require information." The dwarf bobs his head toward the prisoner. "Mayhap you can provide it."
Bralin looks to Andrath. "It is not yet time. We must be patient."
As Solonn has not claimed the item, he will learn more about it. The cleric casts another spell over the necklace and its pendant. [Identify (Divine version - no pearl required)]
Arminas Monday November 7th, 2005 12:13:19 PM
Arminas listens to everyone, but most of all seems intent on Bralin's comments.
"Yes, you are right. We need information. Andrath, why not send your rat to search out our belongings, and tell us information about the guards? If you are unable, I could speak with him."
Andrath d20=2 Monday November 7th, 2005 4:52:33 PM
Andrath takes his share of the food, and eats in silence as Harvest states the party's position. "Bralin is right, we don't know enough about our situation to tell us if and when to try to escape."
He goes over and has a look through the window to the center room, trying to get a feel for the number and types of guards, as well as how many other cells there may be.
Once he has seen all that he can, he moves over to the mussed-up elf, and asks, "Can you tell us more about the situation that we are in? Do you know anything that can help us?" As he listens to whatever the elf has to say, he concentrates on the truthfulness of the elf's story. [OOC: However, the sense motive roll is a 2, so he will believe whatever the elf has to say.]
Sometime in the next little while, he approaches Lorth and asks, "Can you detect any evil intent from Solonn?" Shortly after, he sidles up to Any and asks, "Can you detect any magic on his person?"
Arminas - second illegal post Monday November 7th, 2005 5:37:56 PM
Staring hard at Andrath as his suggestion of using his rat to scout is ignored, Arminas mutters:
"Well, I suppose we could sit and wait for our 'cuffing' ceremony. No use risking the rat's life."
Arminas then goes and stares out the window. Perhaps the owl or Erwen will show up.
DM Bob & Carla Monday November 7th, 2005 9:19:29 PM
The Swords of Light share a miserable meal with their cell-mate. Information is exchanged regarding resources saved and lost. Any and Andrath take turns evaluating the environs visible beyond their cell. What they saw when they first entered the forbidding dungeon are confirmed by their current observations; seven chambers or cells ring the perimeter of the tower with a central room in the middle of which is a rough rectangular table. A candle inside a glass enclosure casts a circle of light by which the two human guards play a game of cards. Additional illumination comes from a rough iron fixture hanging high above the table. There is a passageway leading outside to the ward through which the party had passed earlier.
Andrath turns from his post to question the strange elf in philosophical discussion with Harvest, while Any continues to keep a vigil at the door. When he sings a traditional elvish lament, he hears a weak response at the refrain. He also sees pale hands gripped 'round the bars at one of the other cells.
Bralin casts his spell and discerns that the pendant bestows on the wearer increased health [Amulet of Health +2].
Solonn listens intently to the discussion between the party members, and then, sitting beside Harvest Moon listens quietly to what the young monk has to say. Nodding thanks to Any, the bedraggled elf drinks from the bowl of tepid soup and accepts but a small crust from one of the loaves of bread.
"I fear that your information is old, little sister." It is hard to make out the elves features in the darkness, but Andrath senses no dishonesty as Solonn continues. "Parnoth has recently removed those of elvish blood from the council. They have been replaced by senior civil servants from his primary trading partners and individuals who might profit from the suppression of the elvish influence in the area." Solonn sighs, "the role we elves have played in awakening the Sleeper has had a detrimental affect on our standing in the Wold. Though we would believe to walk hand in hand with nature, would bring peace and love, the road has not been smooth. Ebyron has brought chaos, and even now the noble races of the Wold strive to undo the damage."
Solonn chews the last of his crust, while the others digest the news. He then continues, "the green dragon is away from the city, drawing power from his hoard at his private hall, no doubt. There will be a ceremony. He will demonstrate his power in front of his friends and his enemies, and we will receive the silver bracelet of servitude." Standing, the thin elf walks to the slit carved into the wall. Pressing his face up against the narrow opening Solonn breaths deeply of the night air. "We have this night, and one more, before his return, but there is still hope."
Lorth Tuesday November 8th, 2005 7:28:29 AM
Lorth concentrates on Solonn's soul for any impurities, he doesn't expect to find any, but does what Andrath asks none-the-less. He lets Andrath know the outcome when he is able. When Lorth hears that Parnoth has stacked the council, he frowns. "If it is true what you say about the council, then our mission is for naught. We should concentrate on escaping the city and reporting back to the pitchfork council."
Any d20+2=9 Tuesday November 8th, 2005 9:55:17 AM
Any listens as well as he can (listen 9) to the conversation within the cell, but consigns himself to the necessity of catching up later to what is to be done. When he sees that the others are through with spell casting and talk, he garners what he can from Harvest of what has been said. He agrees with the sentiment that they are not finished yet, and asks again, "Could not one of the familiars seek out more information of our surroundings, including the location of our weapons and my instrument."
He then turns to Andrath and says, " I have not the ability to do what you have asked."
"I have a plan to get us beyond this cell if all are amenable. I can assume the form of one of the claws of Parnoth, exit this cell with the rogues assistance, and confront the guards with their lack of vigilance. I will tell them that Parnoth has something special in store for you all, and march you out of here, with our elvish friend here playing my part. If this plan does not suit you, i can assume other shapes, even one strong enough to rip the cell door from its moorings. What are your thoughts on this matter?"
Any then awaits the response of the other party members.
Harvest (AC18, HP 31/34) Tuesday November 8th, 2005 11:05:42 AM
Harvest Moon frowns in thought. There would be little sense in speaking with the Council of Elders now. Men with self interest to protect. The only other choice would be to gain an audience with Parnoth himself. And yet, if Parnoth has taken such measures as to replace members of his council, would he be amenable to persuasion? The reasoning seems so sound. Based upon what she knows, a campaign against the elves would be folly. And yet, if her information on the Council has turned out to be incorrect, then how many other things, things upon which her arguments to Parnoth have been based, might also turn out to be incorrect?
Harvest breathes an audible sigh.
"Thank you, Solonn. Perhaps now would not be the proper time to confront Parnoth." Harvest takes a curved crust of the bread and nibbles a corner before dipping the rest into the oily soup. "And yet, I would still find a way to help the elves. There are many elven refugees from the Culverwood in Cinnamon Valley who have fled Parnoth's campaign."
"Perhaps, reporting is the best we can do in this situation. There seems little hope of return for the refugees. With this knowledge, they may at last decide to settle in Cinnamon Valley. Begin life anew."
The bread is heavy with oil, and taste sharply of yeast, but it fills the belly as Harvest listens to the plan as laid out by Anthos Westar.
"That is a good plan," Harvest replies. "If we are to escape, I would also take as many of the elves that are here as well along with us. If you can truly assume the form of a Claw of Parnoth, Anthos Westar, and not simply a disguise, then we may be quite a long way toward escaping the city entirely."
"With the authority commanded by the Claws, we may be able to put off any questions that might be put to a group of our composition. Two things may be a possible problem. First would be your speech. Do you speak the language of the Claws, Anthos Westar? That would be Draconic, I believe. Second, would be your trappings. Your clothing would be your own. If there would be a way to disguise your clothing as well as change your form, we would have a greater chance of success."
"As to our equipment, I am confident that it is nearby. All, I believe that we need, is to exit this cell."
Harvest returns her attention to Solonn.
"You know much about Parnoth," she begins. "Would you be able to guide us out of the city and to the road leading south, Solonn?"

Arminas Tuesday November 8th, 2005 11:57:58 AM
Arminas looks between Harvest and Any as they discuss a plan. The politics of the situation seem beyond their reach, but escape seems possible.
"I for one am ready to try any plan. If Andrath will not have his rat search out our supplies, then let us break out of here and look ourselves. I am ready to gain my freedom, or die trying."
Looking at Any he adds:
"There is no shame in death earned from a noble battle. Better to die than become a pawn of Parnoth."
Arminas then spends his time trying to find a weapon. He checks each of the bars, trying to find a loose one to pry out. If none are loose, he goes to the hooks in the wall, and will pry one out. He spends the rest of the time sharpening the edge on the stone floor. If he cannot find something to use as a weapon, he will again look out the window in hopes of seeing a friendly bird.
Any (2nd illegal Post) Tuesday November 8th, 2005 5:01:50 PM
"I have the ability to speak draconic, and I also possess a spell to disguise what gear of mine does not change with the alteration spell. I would hope that we would not need to speak to any of the claws, for I do not know how well they know each other, nor do I know enough of their inner workings to competently bluff our way past them. They have always spoken to their underlings in a hissing common, and that I will be able to do also. The spell will only last 40 minutes. Will that give us enough time to clear the city walls?"
"Arminas, I begin to accept your view. I had hoped to escape long before now, and I will not be made a slave." Any then again awaits the parties decision.
Bralin Tuesday November 8th, 2005 8:34:26 PM
Bralin puts the Amulet back in its hiding place. Twas put there to escape detection, and he won't need it right away.
"Patience" he advocates. "We must escape. Yet another day will earn us greater advantage."
He looks to Solonn. "Ye say hope is not lost. Why? Have you knowledge we can use?" Continuing his arguement, the dwarf points to the hands on the far cell. "Mayhap another ally?"
"On the morrow, Harvest and I will request new spells from our mentors. Spells tailored for escape. We have two days. Spend one observing the watch, gathering information, devising our strategy."
DM Bob & Carla Tuesday November 8th, 2005 11:49:39 PM
The party comes to an informal consensus that they are unlikely to influence the local council, and their efforts would be better spent on planning an escape and reporting their findings to Dulcet and the Pitchfork Council. It dawns on the group that they are ill equipped to have much influence on the allies of a wicked dragon or the fey led army massing in the Culverwood.
Any outlines a brave plan, while Lorth studies the grey elf (and senses no evil). Villemus and Andrath sink into a funk, while Arminus tries to channel his energy into finding a makeshift weapon.
"The Wold is filled with violence, hatred, and death," sighs the grey elf, "but there are those who face the dark heart of the Wold with a message of peace and love." Turning his gaze from the dark eyed dwarf, Solonn stares into Harvest Moon's brown ones, and says, "From darkness we learn to understand the night." Shifting slightly, his shackles jingle as he turns back to the group, "not all non-elf citizens of the Emerald Kingdom hold with Parnoth's edict against those of elvish blood. I have only heard some stories and have no facts to present to you. To avoid becoming Parnoth's chattel some willingly wear the symbol of a strong family on their wrists. Though I have not seen it, I have heard many in the area seek asylum at the Tower of Saryd residence of a powerful adventuring group. The leader is K'Nara Illutu, a fighter and sorceress who leads the famous Emerald Talon's. They are not in residence, but their very name permits those who wear the Talon's cuff to be as free as ever they can be in the Emerald Kingdom. Also, rumours of an escape route for those who can not bear to wear a cuff. Shelter and disguises provided along the way by non-elves who abhor the domination of one living being by another."
Solonn sighs resignedly before answering Harvest's last question, "I have turned from the path of violence long ago. What fate will bring me, I do not know, but if I am not free to go where I am needed or where my heart takes me, I will diminish. But, I will tell you what you need to know should you attempt this daring escape." He smiles sadly at the group, but his eyes flash as he explains, "there will be three tests in order to escape this place; the guards in the outer ward beyond this prison tower, the gate-passage to the barbican, and the drawbridge over the moat. The city is not walled and should be easy."
Arminus gazes out the loophole but can see nothing but darkness down below. Raising his eyes he scans the starry heavens. His form is silhouetted by the faint light from the guardroom that spills into the cell, but it is enough for the messenger below. Arminus feels a faint tickle of magic against her ear, as if an invisible messenger is trying to whisper something to him. Arminus Highlight to display spoiler: { Sleep! Rest your weary soul! Lorth Wednesday November 9th, 2005 7:24:45 AM
Sometime in the evening Lorth prays to Gargul to replenish his one spell of Divine favor. He then sleeps against one of the walls of the cell. If someone offers he certainly lets them unshackle him.
Any Wednesday November 9th, 2005 9:50:32 AM
"Andrath, we should at least test our ability to rid ourselves of these shackles, even if we do not leave them open for now. We should relieve everyone of this extra burden, and leave the chains in place--bound to our wrists with cloth ,string, or whatever we can find. Then when the time comes we will be ready to move, even if our bluff fails, this will give us our hands free, and the shackles as a weapon to fight with."
Any will then wait to see what the others will do, and assist Andrath if that is what is decided.
Arminas Wednesday November 9th, 2005 9:50:36 AM
Sitting, staring out into the darkness, feeling the constant pain of the scars on his back, it is easy for despair to creep in. Yet the thought of Ewan rising from the dead, and the owl carrying the leaf to the greenmage gives him hope.
Now, another reason for hope causes his heart to leap. He sits up, pain and despair seem to drain from him. Quickly, he motions his companions to gather near. Then in a whispered voice, he says:
"I have recieved a message. Rescue comes in the morning. First, we need to rid ourselves of these shackles. Any and Andrath, do not both of you have skills in lock picking? I was told to rest, and that at the changing of the guards at dawn, we should move to the back of the cell. Our allies will take care of the guards and set us free."
Looking at the faces around him he adds:
"No, I don't know who sent the message. Yes, I am sure. I did recieve a message. Look, you must trust me. Help is coming."
Harvest (AC18, HP 31/34) Wednesday November 9th, 2005 10:53:33 AM
"I have been praying every day, Bralin Stoneminder," Harvest Moon says to the dwarf. "And yet without the symbol ... " Her voice trails off, but her mouth sets into a thin line of determination. "I will try, Bralin Stoneminder."
At the confirmation of outside aide from Arminas Calaelen, Harvest Moon nods her head.
"Then we wait on the morrow." She turns to Solonn. "A man ... who I greatly admire and respect once told me that it is important that some people in this Wold be prepared to fight. He said that this is necessary so that others may be free to follow paths less violent. In this way, both those who fight and those who do not can share the blessings of the peaceful way."
"If you will not fight, Solonn, then we will fight for you. If slavery diminishes you, it diminishes us all. Come with us. We will take you from this place. And the other elves as well. Please, will you accompany us?"
Later in the evening, as work is done upon their chains and shackles, Harvest reaches out to the divine. Guidance. Please. Hear me in out time of need. The small brown girl reaches out to any spark of the Wold that cares. Anyone. This, before retiring for the rest that would heal her remaining wounds.

The unknown is unreliable. The unreliable is dangerous.
But aide is indeed coming, can they afford to be unprepared?
"I'll have a spell to conceal and one to silence." Is all he says. "Harvest, you do your best."
Andrath Thursday November 10th, 2005 12:04:55 AM
Andrath moves to each of the party members in turn, using his lock picks to try to remove the shackles. Since there is little else to do this evening, based on Arminas' message, he can take his time [OOC: and take 20 for each party member, for an open lock check of 33.]
"Keep your hands in your laps as you sit, and it should not be obvious that the shackles are loose. If the guards enter the cell, we can try to keep the charade of locked shackles up as long as possible, but if they discover that any shackles are loose, then we will need to 'take care' of them."
"I suggest that we post watches tonight; our normal order will be fine."
DM Bob & Carla Thursday November 10th, 2005 12:10:54 AM
Arminus excitedly shares his information with the group and Any and Andrath set to work. Together they covertly free their friends and the strange ageless elf who shares their cell from the shackles that bind them. Following Any and Andrath's suggestions, they wear the irons loosely in order not to raise suspicions.
Taking one of Harvest's small hands in his, the walker uses the dirt of the ground to trace a symbol on the palm of her hand. "This mark, three interlaced circles inside a larger cirlce, is rarely used today. Do you know it? It is the symbol of he who provides comfort and ease of pain for those who suffer. He extends life and teaches how to enjoy it...Alemi, the Healer." His finger still tracing the circles in the palm of the young girl's hand, he stares at nothing, "his blue eyes have pierced my soul." After a moment, he looks back at Harvest Moon as if seeing her anew. "But, those who follow Alemi, need no symbols!" The grey elf holds his hands palms outward with fingers spread, and a faint white light emanates from them.
