Xenia's Tests - Continued Still More (DM JohnP)
Tuesday October 25th, 2005 1:31:40 AM

Xenia only - Highlight to display spoiler: {
The dark rogue mentally rehearses some tumbling moves for use in combat.

She repeats the exercise, over and over again, until it seems second nature to her. Of course, she hasn't yet tried it for real yet.

The mental activity counteracted the drowsiness for some time. Now, the rogue can tell from her fuzzy thoughts that sleep should come soon. Who can tell what awaits when this test finally ends?

Or, she could simply open one of the doors to see what awaits.

What does Xenia do?
}

Appolo's Test - Continued Yet Again (DM JohnP)
Tuesday October 25th, 2005 1:35:29 AM

Appolo only - Highlight to display spoiler: {
The pirate reclines against the wall in a dry part of the room. Slowly, he relaxes and his head begins to nod. The need to sleep is getting overwhelming and if Appolo stays like this, he will surely fall asleep.

Do you still continue to wait? Or try one of the doors now?
}

Toros' Test Continued Again (DM JohnP)
Tuesday October 25th, 2005 1:38:02 AM

Toros only - Highlight to display spoiler: {
The liontaur paces around the room, then stops to nibble on some dried food. Finally, he reclines on the floor and rests.

Eventually, his stomach starts to rumble once again. How much time has passed? Who is to know?

Do you continue to wait? Or try one of the doors?
}

Syr's Test - Continued Yet Again (DM JohnP)
Tuesday October 25th, 2005 1:40:54 AM

Garrett only - Highlight to display spoiler: {
Time seems to be slowing to a crawl in the room. The water ebbs and flows and the doors remain untouched.

The voice commanded the monk to be patient, but this is getting ridiculous. Meditation is only so good for relieving the boredom that this room represents. And, as much as the mental exercise is helpful, the elven monk can feel his body telling him that sleep will soon be needed.

Do you still continue to wait? Or try one of the doors now?

Oni
Tuesday October 25th, 2005 1:43:54 AM

As Oni opens the doors to the next room he peers around looking for anything that would be familiar.

Oni's Second Test (DM JohnP)
Tuesday October 25th, 2005 5:27:35 AM

After resisting the lure of the treasures offered by the First Test, Oni hurries through the door and down the set of stairs. He comes to a door bearing a sign stating:

"Thou Shalt Be Merciful"

When he opens the door, Oni can see a crumped form at the far end of the room. The man, as he determines when he looks more closely, lies in a pool of blood and fluids.

The man is dressed in cruelly twisted armor and a full helm that encloses his head. The helm is shaped to resemble the face of some kind of evil outsider. Over it all, the man wears a red cloak.

Oni recognizes the man as one of the Red-cloaks that had harassed him on his way to this meeting place.

When the injured man looks up, he addresses Oni. "I am injured and unable to prevent you going forward. But I would kill you if I could."

What does Oni choose to do?

Garrett's Test - Continued Still More (DM JohnP)
Tuesday October 25th, 2005 9:03:39 AM

Garrett only - Highlight to display spoiler: {
The Protector decides that he has waited long enough. He walks over to the door labelled "Thou Shalt Be Patient" and opens it. Briefly, Garrett sees the main floor of the Temple where this all began, looking at the dragon statue and the pool. Then there is a twisting sense of vertigo, and Garrett is falling headfirst into the pool.

After pulling himself from the water, Garrett looks left and right at the two doors. He knows what to expect from the Tests behind the right hand door. But what awaits behind the left hand door, where Xenia said she saw some Red-cloaks enter.

Which door do you choose?

Xenia

Highlight to display spoiler: {
Please Wait Here.

Thou Shalt Be Patient

Didn't say nothing about not sleeping. Xenia dozes. Short cat naps of 20 minute intervals. Girl's gotta be fresh. But, truly, a stake out like this usually calls for a partner.
}

Syr
Tuesday October 25th, 2005 7:43:36 PM

The elf bends down to take a quick sip of water and continues meditating. He spends the time wondering how the others are doing and wishing that he had Tionel along for some entertainment.

(OOC: grin, why does Syr's test say for Garrett's eyes only?)

DM JohnP - because I posted it at 2 am my time, by cutting and pasting ;)

Toros
Tuesday October 25th, 2005 10:26:56 PM

Toros is still fine with the waiting, quiet enjoying his quite time in his inner voyage. However, if he continues to eat and drink more perhaps he will need to check some other place to deal with his some other needs!

Oni Borzzone
Wednesday October 26th, 2005 2:46:51 AM

Oni squats near the man, placing his staff on his knees. Looking over the prone man he can see he will die soon.

"Sir, enemy you are. Helping you is not why I am here. If I had a weapon, with a blade, I would surely cut your throat and end your suffering. Alas, I can do that neither. I do wish you good luck as you meet your maker."

Standing he waits. Looking around him he studies the walls. He may never get a chance to return here afterall.

"Very well, your life means nothing to me one way or the other. I am not a priest, and therefor cannot heal you. I would take your life now and make it easier, and less painful, but I do not have a weapon. For your sake I hope you die soon."

Oni then stands and walks toward the next set of doors. When he reaches them he will open them.

Toros
Saturday October 29th, 2005 12:15:51 PM

OOC: I have a dilemma: to see the post that Xenia interacts with Toros I must read the part which is supposed not to be read by anyoneelse but Xenia :-) So what should I do, especially after I have already read the private post; at the moment, prefer to pretend not to have read that post ;-b

DM JohnP - I was planning to put Xenia's actions into the next DM post to you.

Toros
Monday October 31st, 2005 2:59:09 AM

It is a good relief for Toros to know that the tests are over and see some familiar faces finally. His friends seem to be doing good enough after all this process of testing: "Xenia, Syr, nice to see you again! Hope you are all right... Actually, it seems you are enjoying your time!.. Do you have any idea how the others are doing?"

Xenia  d20+13=29
Monday October 31st, 2005 10:27:40 AM

"I'faid," Xenia replies around another mouthful of ripe red fruit. "That last test was kinda ... " the girl rogue explores a choice of words before speaking, " ... senseless. I mean, yeah, ok, Thou Shalt Be Patient. But patience for patience sake is ... well, sort of senseless."

She stands for a moment, a strawberry gripped in two fingers by it's stem. Her eyes are cloaked in thought.

"Makes more sense as a test of will. Or maybe determination." The girl rogue, still wrapped in contemplation, takes a slow bite from the side of the large red berry. "I guess, in the end, maybe it was something of a test of faith. Yeah. Faith."

"I mean, that is, if you had the same test as me. Room. Stool. Waiting. Waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting. You know, you guys oughta try this stuff. It's great."

The rogue tips her head to one side as the soft click of yet another door reaches her ears.

"I think one more of the others is just about to join us, Toros."

"Say, you know, I think I'm gonna scout ahead. See what's up there. No contact. Just a look see and return. What do you think?"

Smiling as he finally greets the others, "I agree with you, it WAS senseless. The last things we need in a race is to wait. Although, that did make it a good test. I wonder how our foe fared?"

Accustomed to seeing Xenia looking ahead he nods, "Just be careful... like always." He wanders over to the table and helps himself to some food.

(OOC: bizarre, I'm missing two posts. Maybe I didn't press submit? Sorry about that, posted fine in my other game.)

The priest pauses, then continues. "The right hand door is for those who believe in the Gods of the Wold. The left, for those who do not."

Garrett, Syr, Toros & Xenia (DM JohnP)
Monday October 31st, 2005 9:23:57 PM

The four companions face one another in the waiting room. Garrett has just moved through the door from his test.

Looking around, Garrett can see that the waiting room is much larger than he originally thought. The four companions look at one another while resting and waiting for their fellows. Everyone seems to agree that scouting would be prudent. While Xenia prepares to slip ahead, Garrett, Syr and Toros sample the provided food.

Xenia only - Highlight to display spoiler: {
You slip into the shadows and moves up to the intersection. Looking both ways, the broad hallway ends only a short distance away. To the south, there are alcoves containing smaller versions of the dragon statues from the first test. To the north, two large double doors are closed. Presumably, the Inner Sanctum lies in that direction.

Xenia hears some sounds of movement from the opposite hallway.

sputtering and flinging water to all sides, Oni is not enthralled by the priests words. Scratching his ears, trying to rid them of the water he moves over to the old priest.

"I was summoned hear with no instruction.," he spits out some foul tasting water. "Asfar as choosing as my fellows did, who exactly are these fellows? If they are the ones I must meet, then pray tell which way did they go? I would assume the Gods of the Wold, but, some explanation would be nice."

The elf is losing his composure, something that happens very sporadically.

Xenia tips her head to the side in an attitude of curiosity at the short dead-end hallway with the dragon decor. Tracking silently across the hall, she examines the one furthest north. Switching the lenses on her nose for a pair of goggles, the rogue goes over the dragon and the alcove in a quick, but fairly thorough search.

"Do you give people stuff?" she asks the dragon, immediately feeling sort of foolish for asking. "I mean, like, gimme a Celestial Armor, please." she asks, glad that no one is around to see her talking to a statue.

Regardless of the results, the dark rogue is on the clock. She switches lenses back and replaces the goggles in her pack. Then she leaves the dragons and pads silently to the large double doors to the north. At the door, she listens. Darn doors. Nothing is to be heard. So, cloaked in shadows, she pulls the door open a crack for a look see at what's making the moving noises on the other side.

Question
How many dragons are there?

"So, the Red Cloaks of Marteaus are here with us. Somewhere." The small elven monk takes a casual bite. His eyes rise in approval at the rich woody flavor.

"You saw how they fought back at the Temple of Light." Syr gestures with his food as he addresses his Toros and Garrett. "Gauntlets. Poison. The spells. They're evil fighters. And it sounds like they're after the same thing we are. If we see them again, how do you think we should approach them?"

The Ghost looks at Oni and the ghost's gaze seems to pierce Oni down to the core of his being.

"You were summoned here to aid a group in their quest to discover the importance of an artifact that dates from the earliest days of the Wold. Before my Lord Alemi became a god or Gargalus, either. The meaning of the document may be found in the Inner Sanctum of the Temple, which predates the construction of this Temple."

"However, the Inner Sanctum is barred to those who are committed to neither the Gods of the Wold nor the Gods of Testing. Anyone seeking to enter the Inner Sanctum must past the Tests of the Believer. There is one set for those who are inclined to good and the Gods of the Wold, and one set for those who follow the Gods of Testing."

"The group that you seek entered the right hand path, for those who follow the Gods of the Wold."

And the ghost gestures towards the door to the right of the pool.

Appolo's Test - Eleventh Post (DM JohnP)
Wednesday November 2nd, 2005 9:35:58 PM

Appolo approaches the door where the Test of Patience awaits. As he does so, one of the doors opens and he sees Nauthiz'Ull step from the door.

The dark-skinned ranger approaches Appolo and holds out a scroll case. "I can't take the waiting. And I can't stand to be trapped in here, under the earth like this. I can't go on ... I have to return to my home to look after friends and family. During the wait, I was overcome with a feeling of dread, as if something terrible has happened to them."

Nauthiz'Ull presses the scroll case into Appolo's hands. "Take this - it is the parchment that the Red Cloaks were seeking."

After doing this, Nauthiz'Ull walks back up the stairs.

Appolo proceeds into the room and voice again says, "Please Wait". While his thoughts are unsettled at first, eventually the pirate is able to sleep.

After an unknown period of time, Appolo awakens to answer the call of nature and the rumble of an empty stomach.

How much longer will you wait?

The Waiting Room - Again (DM JohnP)
Wednesday November 2nd, 2005 10:04:16 PM

Syr attempts to discuss tactics while Toros tries eating some fruit. Garrett doesn't say anything, probably thinking over the tactics that the Red Cloaks used.

Meanwhile, Xenia is scouting down the hallway.

Xenia only - Highlight to display spoiler: {
When the dark rogue moves towards the alcoves, she can see down the hallway opposite the one where she came from. Down there, she can see another waiting room just like the one that she and her companions found when they finished the third test. The sound came from there, but she cannot see anything that might have made the sound.

The dragon statues do not respond to her words. When she turns to the double doors, they slide open at her touch. A warm, golden light spills forth from the immense room that lies beyond.

When Xenia's eyes have had a chance to adjust, she can see that the room might more properly be called a cavern. The light comes from what looks to be stone spheres that Continual Flame has been cast on. The light is multiplied and reflected by the gold and gems that lay in heaps upon the floor, and pressed onto the walls, and fixed on the distant ceiling of the cavern. Peeking from the piles of treasure are weapons, shields, coats of armor, jewelry and assorted other items. More wealth than Xenia has ever seen ... or even imagined.

Garrett
Thursday November 3rd, 2005 9:59:00 AM

"How do we approach them?" responds Garrett to Syr. "I'm not exactly a tactician, but I hope we have our full group back when we do face them. My best strength is making those close to me very difficult to hit. I can anchor the center position of defensive front well. We need our fighter types to stay together and fight side by side to prevent them from flanking and ganging up on us as much as possible."

"How long has it been since Xenia left? We should check on her if she is not back shortly."

Syr (Sub/Al)
Thursday November 3rd, 2005 10:54:45 AM

Syr nods. "That's good to know," the elven monk replies. "I take best advantage in speed and mobility. Might be hard for me to stay in one place for long. I hit and run. I carve away at the enemies' ability."

The elf frowns and puts a hand to his chin. Appolo, Xenia, himself ... Syr looks up at the Toros, the big Liontaur. "You might want to rethink the idea of protecting a front line, Garret. I'm not sure we have many front liners with us."

Slipping a set of tools from her pouch, the rogue goes to work on the door. Time is running short. But maybe, just maybe, she can secure the door.

Wrapping things back up, the rogue glides silently back up the hall. Instead of returning back to the waiting room with her companions, she takes the other turn, and moves toward the *other* waiting room.

Garrett, Syr and Toros are discussing tactics while Xenia is scouting.

Xenia only - Highlight to display spoiler: {
Examining the doors, Xenia can see no sign of of any lock or similar mechanism. The handles are built into the door and cannot be removed easily. However, the rogue discovers that she could, if she desired, place some small wedges under the door to either keep it closed or hold it open.

When she examines the other waiting room, Xenia can here the muffled sounds of combat on the other side of several doors.

Finally, she comes back and tries to scare her companions.
}

Xenia returns and starts playing a guessing game with her companions. Just as the others are about to respond, everyone hears the click of another door opening.

Xenia
Thursday November 3rd, 2005 11:36:24 PM

"Alright. Here's the straight of it," Xenia begins the report. Down the hall is a cross intersection. To one side is a dead end with some alcoves. The alcoves got dragon statues in them. I don't think they do anything. To the other side is a short hall to the Inner Sanctum. I've put shims under the doors to keep them shut, but it won't take long to figure that out."

"Doesn't look like anyone's in the Inner Sanctum right now. And I tell ya, from the look I got, there's more rich stuff in there than there was in that Testing Room. Maybe there's even stuff to help us fight the Red Cloaks if we meet them."

"That brings me to back to the hall. I told you what's to one side and the other, but what I haven't said yet is what's straight ahead. Straight ahead looks to be another waiting room just like this. Now, you gotta figure, if there were two doors back in the main temple, we went into one, I saw the Red Cloaks go into the other, and there are two waiting rooms here, we came out of one, then guess who you think is gonna come out of the other? Better yet, listen to what I heard when I went up to the other waiting room to take a peek? I heard fighting."

"What do you think? That fit? I think they're headed for the Inner Sanctum too. But we got a jump on them. Question is, what we gonna do about it? I'm thinking ambush. But are we equipped for that? I've got a necklace of fireballs. That might give them a bit of a hotfoot. But what else we got?"

"I'm also thinking we need to get in and see what's in the Inner Sanctum before they get there. If there's stuff that will help us against them, we need to get it first, and get it ready."

"So, why don't we do this, you guys head to the Inner Sanctum. Check it out. Get whatever is there set and ready. I'll hide at the intersection. If I see someone, I'll high-tail it out and warn you guys. And we can ambush them before they hit the door?"

"How's that?"

"As the encounter seems to be inevitable, does any of you want some additional magical protection? I have some useful scrolls like Mage Armor etc. I can also summon an animal from this tricky bag to ward or warn us..?" Toros is open for any suggestions or requests about using his magical items, showing what he has got to his companions. Before the Inner Sanctum (DM JohnP)
Saturday November 5th, 2005 9:58:08 PM

Five members of the original party are now assembled in the waiting room. During a discussion of tactics, it was decided that most of the group will enter the Inner Sanctum while Xenia and maybe Toros wait for the Red Cloaks to show themselves.

Garrett leads the group to the Inner Sanctum. Like when Xenia scouted down here, the doors glide open without any effort. Looking inside, the group sees an immense pile of treasure. From where they stand, the mound of gold, gems and various items stands higher than the tallest of them and it spreads more than fifty feet from side to side.

In addition to the mound of treasure, gold and gems have been pressed onto the walls and ceiling of this cavern to further the light from the torches overhead. In stark contrast, the unadorned black and white stone of an altar stands between the doorway and the mound of treasure.

The group can also see a flat pathway that seems to go around the mound of treasure and pillars standing around the perimeter of the cavern.

There is still no sign of anyone entering the other waiting room. Who will be first to actually enter the Inner Sanctum?

Into the Inner Sanctum (DM JohnP)
Monday November 7th, 2005 10:30:07 PM

The party ventures into the Sanctum, marvelling at the wealth displayed before them. There is more gold, gems and items here than any of you, alone or together had ever thought possible.

Xenia doesn't venture into the Sanctum, but instead crouches at the intersection of the hallways waiting for the Red Cloaks to appear. Toros hides closer to the doorway itself.

Appolo is the first of the party to actually set foot in the Sanctum. As he is pulling the parchment from his pouch, he can feel a gentle tug or nudge from it. Not like someone trying to pull it from his grasp, but rather as if the parchment is trying to direct his steps. Right now, the parchment is trying to direct Appolo forward and to the left.

Garrett and Syr are interested in the black and white altar. As they approach it, both can see the tops of statues or pillars beyond the pile of treasure. Syr asks Appolo to look at the altar.

Knowledge - Religion DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {
The symbols on the altar and the statues that you can see are old, really old. None of the symbols currently represent the Gods of the Wold or the Gods of Testing. However, there is a symbol on the altar similar to that used by Alemi, and one of the statues has a symbol like that of Pantheon.
}

Knowledge - Religion DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: {
The symbol on the altar is, in fact, a very early symbol used by Alemi. The statue bears the symbol of the former God of Yore that ultimately became Pantheon. You would estimate that these symbols date from the Second Age of the Wold, possibly even the First Age.
}

While the others are starting to explore, Xenia is watching for signs of anyone entering the other waiting room. She doesn't see anyone there, but she does see an elven man enter the same waiting room as the party.

What does the party choose to do? Specifically:
- does Appolo follow the direction of the parchment?
- do Xenia and Toros go to investigate this new arrival?
- does the party decide to stick together, or spread out around the Sanctum?

Arrivals (DM JohnP)
Tuesday November 8th, 2005 10:22:23 PM

Oni moves to examine the tables in the waiting room. There is nothing here with any kind of arcane markings or any traces of arcane spells.

Xenia decides to investigate this new arrival, so she moves through the shadows to the waiting room. She speaks to the wizard, but hasn't yet had a response.

Toros maintains his position in the doorway, too busy with loading his crossbow to see much. But he might have heard something ...

Appolo follows the direction of the parchment. It tugs gently, directing Appolo towards a plain, unmarked stone just off the pathway. Garrett trails behind, marvelling at what is happening. Appolo's path seems to brighten, somehow illuminated to guide his footsteps.

Syr moves about the Sanctum, marvelling at the treasure. He notices that the treasure is not simply piled on the floor. Instead, every coin and gem, every sword and ring, seems to be placed with precision. Syr can't figure out the exact reason for the arrangement, but the treasure has been arranged for display.

Uriel calls upon his god for the ability to sense the taint of evil. He scans the other waiting room and doesn't detect anything evil ... yet.

Then he moves into the Sanctum and scans there. Again, nothing registers as having the taint of evil.

"Move it guy! We got bad company incoming. Up the hall and to the right. Quick, or you'll get caught in the crossfire."

The unseen rogue's terse whisper comes from out of the shadows. "Tell them Xenia sent you." And then she's gone.

Gliding back up the corridor, the dark rogue takes up her position at the corner again. She notes the position of Toros, and Uriel deeper into the door. At least nothing bad seems to be happening in there.

A click ... Wait, Xenia. Wait. Buy time. Buy some time.

His wand on one hand and crossbow on the other, Toros waits in the shadows, getting ready for the coming ones and staying on defensive.

If Toros sees Xenia attacks, he also will come out of the shadows, use his wand to strike the opponent nearest to the door the opponents enter and hide again.

Jumping in his skin, but not showing any outward appearance, he turns to the new voice. Alas, another test. Noone is there. Thinking back on the words, the name Alemi was mentioned. Well, he was not a religious man, but he did know Alemi was not one of the Gods of Testing. So he takes the advice and continues down the hall in the direction he was told. Did the voice give a name? Ah yes, Xenia. What a peculiar name.

OOC continue wandering like a lost wet child, hehe.

The paladin stands in the doorway. In one hand, he grips the great sword. His other hand is outstretched toward the door, questing for approaching evil.

None would get by without his say. Such is the paladin's oath. (Detect Evil toward the door. 60 ft cone.)

Things are starting to happen now. The watchers in the hallway think that they've heard the arrival of someone in the other waiting room.

Xenia encourages the new arrival to join everyone else in the Inner Sanctum, then moves silently through the shadows to her listening post by the doors to the Inner Sanctum. Then she readies herself, waiting for more people to appear.

Toros continues to wait in the doorway, fingering his Wand of Magic Missiles and preparing to fire at the arrivals.

Oni moves down the hallway to the entrance to the Inner Sanctum. Now Oni can see some other members of the group inside the Inner Sanctum.

Appolo allows the parchment to guide him, ending directly in front of the unmarked stone. Garrett follows him and ends standing beside him. Garrett and Appolo both notice that the parchment is glowing now with a bright, pure light.

Uriel moves to the doorway, drawing his greatsword as he moves. He continues to concentrate on detecting those tainted by evil, but feels nothing within range.

Syr is still marvelling at the pile of treasure.

========================================

Xenia easily hears the sounds of more doors opening, then conversation. She easily sees that that the figures all wear red cloaks and the armor worn by some is familiar too. She hurls the bead towards them, then ducks behind the corner.
DM Note - you didn't specify that you wanted to hide again after hurling the bead, so I rolled for you ... getting a 1.

The fireball explodes with a loud WHUMMP and is followed by shouts of anger and pain.

"They're here before us!"
"Come out and fight, you sneaks!"
"Hurry, put up some protection!"

From where Xenia is crouching, she can see two of the Red Cloaks begin casting spells and touching their companions wearing the twisted plate armor. Those two Red Cloaks move down the hallway, drawing their swords from the scabbards on their back as they do. Stopping partway, they both invoke a prayer to Marteaus and a dark aura envelopes their weapons.

"There's one of the little sneaks, here!," one shouts and points his sword directly at Xenia.

Thhe first Red Cloak to arrive shouts down the hallway, "You will give the parchment to us. Our great need demands it. The evil nature of Gargul must be returned to him. It is our quest and our lives. Our test and our great need!"

Toros can't see any of them to aim his wand at.

"IN COMING!!!" the dark rogue shouts. She jerks another bead from her necklace and lobs it high around the corner.

Then she turns and runs through the shadows, her footfalls noisy as she crosses the floor. She draws her rapier as she runs.

"Uriel, I'm to your right," she whispers, as she whirls within the paladin's shadow, turning to face the doorway.

Saturday November 12th, 2005 7:13:49 AM

The location of the enemy can be no clearer than it is from their shouting.

"My thanks, Lady Xenia," the paladin says to the shadows by his side. Uriel breaks off the detection of evil and hefts the longsword, bringing it into a two handed grip.

"Time, Appolo. Take your time. Remember. Greed. Mercy. Patience. Here is where the tests will bear out. In this chamber our faith and the essential purity of our character will rule the day."

"Hear me, followers of Evil Marteaus, you shall not pass. So says Uriel Verilotil Arthunia! Your evil will be denied!"

Xenia pulls another bead from her necklace and hurls it towards the group of Red Cloaks coming down the hallway. It hits her intended target and explodes in a burst of flames. Xenia has the gratification of seeing flames licking about her targets.

Oni decides that discretion is the better part of valour, for the moment at least. He invokes a spell and disappears from sight. Xenia easily hears his footsteps as he moves inside the room.

Garrett looks upwards at the ceiling of the cavern far above him, so high that he can barely make it out in the light from the torches. From what he remembers, the ceilings in the corridors were probably 15' high. He shouts some instructions to Appolo, then moves towards the doorway. Partway there, he invokes a prayer to Domi and instantly doubles in size and height.

Toros moves back towards the room, still hiding and preparing to shoot the first Red Cloak that he sees.
(DM Note - didn't catch this before, but liontaurs are supposed to be 10'x10', so now you're bigger and blocking a bigger part of the doorway.)

Uriel grips his weapon in both hands and appreciates the protection offered by his spell.
(DM Note - Yes, the spell could have been cast.)

Appolo kneels to place the parchment in front of the plinth. The glowing light coming from the parchment is now unmistakeable.

Syr continues to study the treasure pile.

========================================

[Roll for # of arrivals, and their classes]

The first Red Cloak (R2) turns the corner and Toros activates his wand. Five missiles streak from the wand and hit the evil warrior. He shouts, "Another of the sneaks!" and closes with Toros.

Another of the Red Cloaks (R4) rounds the corner and also tries to close with Toros, but doesn't quite make it.

As soon as the two come close, both Toros and Uriel can feel a cloying despair that comes from them, making it difficult to react or resist.
(DM Note - Take -2 to all saves while within 10' of R2 or R4)

A third Red Cloak (R1) comes around the corner, then stops and then taps himself with a wand. He turns to look behind him and calls out, "Hurry up!"

No other Red Cloaks appear around the corner.

Toros - OOC
Sunday November 13th, 2005 7:27:52 AM

John, does Toros get an attack of opportunity as the redcloak comes close?

DM JohnP - I'm ruling No, because:
1) Under the revised taur rules that we're using, liontaurs only have 5' reach for natural weapons. And an AoO isn't provoked by moving into a threatened square.
2) The last time that you stated what Toros was wielding, it was a wand in one hand and a light crossbow in the other. So no melee weapon that might extend your reach.

Uriel (Sub/Al) (HP 90/90, AC18)  d20+14=30 d20+9=28 d20+9=25 d8+4=11 d8+4=5 d8+4=7

Uriel makes a quick assessment of the situation before returning his attention to the Eyes of Marteaus.

"Toros," he shoots a quick question up at the large Liontaur, "can you hold the doorway until Garrett arrives?"

With a quick side step, he denys the follower of evil access to the slight passage at the side of the doorway.

"I know your kind, Fallen." Uriel spits the word like poison. "You will not enter." The paladin's language is simple, and so is that of his blade.

From the depth of shadows, Xenia jerks yet another bead from the necklace. These are going fast. She frowns at the thought.

The slim dark girl appears suddenly beyond the doorway as the bead leaves her hand. It's a long throw. The bead arcs over the heads of the Red Cloaks and through the doorway to expand like an orange red blossom of heat and flame. For a moment, the two Cloakies in front are engulfed, as are any coming behind them from the hallway.

Xenia spends that moment to take a five-foot step back and out of sight. From the relative cover, out of sight of the doorway, she draw a potion of Shield.

How many coming? How many? For a moment that feels eternal, she listens to the clank of footsteps, trying to pick one from another and count.

Uriel slides sideways to prevent the Red Cloaks from passing by him. He swings twice with his longsword at the Red Cloak beside him, hitting both times. However, his second swing was not as solid as he thought it might be.

Toros triggers his wand and fires five more missiles into the Red Cloak beside him. The man is looking injured, but is still on his feet. Otherwise, Toros remains in his defensive stance.
DM Note - Can you do me a favour and show the math for Toros' variable AC
and/or tell me exactly which Move Equivalent action Toros is taking?

Xenia' plucks another bead from her necklace and lobs it over the heads of her companions and the Red Cloaks to explode behind them. Again, she has the satisfactions of seeing the Red Cloaks grimace. She can hear more feet rushing from beyond the doorway, maybe as many as three unseen opponents. She then retreats to hide behind a pillar, getting some cover and concealment.

Garrrett runs towards the battle in the doorway, coming up behind his companions.
DM Note - I ran you the full 80' in a straight-ish line, bringing you up to the new location.

Oni decides to move back to the battle, ending up between his newfound companions.
DM Note - I placed you as close to "into the doorway" without putting you into melee range. If this is not where you wanted to be, please specify a square in your next post.

Appolo places the parchment on the stone floor in front of the plinth and steps back, sending a thought to Alemi. The parchment flares brighter and Appolo has to look away (Reflex Save vs. DC 10) or be Dazzled (-1 Attack, Search & Spot) for 1d4 rounds. Something is happening ... maybe Alemi is listening ...

Syr wakes from his reverie and charges towards the battle. He stops behind Toros and offers to take his place in the front line.

========================================

Red Cloak R1 will step forwards 5 feet and then invokes a dark prayer to Marteaus. A cold, cloying mist forms in the area just inside the doorway, inflicting wounds upon everyone there and carrying the foul breath of the God of Disease. The evil priest then draws his mace and points at the group again, shouting "Give up the parchment! We need it to restore Gargul to his former glory!"
(Everyone but Appolo - make a DC 20 Will (wisdom) save. If you succeed, take 11 damage. If you fail, take 23 damage and are Sickened for 2 rounds. Sickened = -2 on Attacks, Damage, Saves, Skill and Ability checks.)

Red Cloak R2 grips his foul blade with both hands and delivers two powerful strikes at Uriel with his foul blade. The first stroke channels the evil nature of his god, increasing the strength of the blow and increasing the damage.
Hit AC 26 - total 40 damage (33 + 7 evil)

The second strike is even more grievous, catching a weakpoint in the paladin's armor and nearly cutting him in two. Uriel crumples to the floor, beyond the assistance of any of his companions.
Hit AC 27 (threat), auto Critical - total 59 damage (52 + 7 evil)

Red Cloak R2 then continues his swing and hacks at Toros but does not connect.

A second evil Red Cloak priest, R3, comes from the hallway and stands behind his fellow. He invokes a prayer to Marteaus and calls down unholy fire unto the group.
Flame Strike, directed at the cluster of PC's. Garrett, Syr, Toros - make a DC 21 Reflex save (wisdom), 49 hitpoints if you fail, 24 if successful.

Red Cloak R4 steps forward to attack the liontaur blocking the doorway. He also swings twice with his foul blade.
First attack hits AC 32 - total damage 31 (10 evil)
Second attack hits AC 30 (threat, auto critical) - total damage 46 (8 evil)

The party sees two more Red Cloaks step from the hallway.

Player Sanity Info:
AC for R2, R4, R6 = AC26

Remember - you each have 5 hero points, and this might be a good time to start using them.

Toros - OOC
Monday November 14th, 2005 11:15:14 PM

For the AoO, Toros has two paws, so even his hands are full he can use his natural weapons, cant he? The redcloaks attack him should provoke AoO. ( he has combat reflexes with a bonus 6 in dexterity.)

The AC of Toros as a Mendicant is d20 plus 9 plus dodge(1) plus defensive stance (with 5 ranks in tumble it is 3), if I am not wrong.

DM JohnP - Thanks for the clarifications.

The Red Cloaks making a 5' step and full attacks doesn't trigger an AoO. Combat Reflexes increases the number of AoO's that you can make.

I was missing the effect of your Tumble on defensive stance.

Toros - OOC2
Monday November 14th, 2005 11:29:57 PM

In the previous round Toros only activated his wand and did not use his move equivalent action.

Is the Flame Strike save based on dexterity or wisdom, and can Toros use his evasion ability for this?

Also would you allow his intelligent item to heal him during the first attack of redcloaks, sensing Toros get injured?

Otherwise, the poor liontaur would be very much dead I guess...

DM JohnP -

Yes, Flame Strike is a reflex save so Evasion will allow Toros to avoid any damage.

I'll allow the intelligent item to cast healing spells, as needed. If you ever want it to do something different, please specify what action and for how long.

Sorry, I have no other time, except now to post.

Burned one hero point, wisdom save 23>20 and reflex save 31>21. I am assuming Toros can save himself from the flame strike with his evasion ability. So the total damage is 88.

If his intelligent item can not heal him on time, Toros lays on the ground with -7 hp. If it can heal him (13hp) please apply the below post...

With the combined attacks of the redcloaks badly wounded Toros (6 hp) sees the falling of the paladin lifeless to the ground, and realizes his end would be the same, if he does not retreat. He leaves his place to Syr and moves back behind Garrett, trying to heal himself, benefiting from his protection (spontenous casting of CMW, rolled 1, total 7 hp, increasing Toros total hp to 13).

Will Save: 20(only +13, not +14) (11 damage)
reflex save: 22 (24 damage)

Garrett watches in amazement as the mighty paladin falls. Promising to himself that they will pay. "We will destroy the parchment first. The former Gargul is gone, and you will follow him." Garrett yells to the red cloaks.

If Toros is not down, and able to retreat:

Garrett drops a flame strike upon R1, hoping to weaken the reinforcements before they arrive, or at least slow them down before he turns his attention to R2. The flame strike should catch R1, R3, R6, and R5 Reflex save: DC20, damage either 34 or 17.

If Oni is not actually between Garrett and R2, then Garrett will move up to make the man focus on him. If Oni is between Garrett and R2, then Garrett will try and move over to the spot that Toros just left, but not far enough in that he gives the red cloaks an AoO. If neither of those is possible, then Garrett yells for Oni to move back and do what he can from behind the front line.

If Toros is down(but not obviously dead) or unable to move back away from the red cloaks:

Garrett will reach over and cast CCW upon the Liontaur instead of flamestriking the red cloaks, and still try and move up as listed above. CCW (18hp, using a hero point to reroll) 23 hp back to Toros

Fram and framble. Outnumbered. Badly outnumbered. The dark rogue has time for that lone thought before grody mist stuff takes her in and she feels, like, all sick and fevery.

Oh stars. The paladin guy gets cut really bad. I mean, really bad. And he just falls down like he's dead.

Through the wave of fever, Xenia looks quickly around for other doors. Routes of escape. Anything. Then she jerks one of the last two beads from the necklace, the small ones. It's a pretty far shot through the doorway. But they're getting killed, and someone's gotta do something.

The throw is weak, and for a moment, the rogue is afraid it's gonna land short, catching some of her folks in the blast as well. Then the red fire blooms again, and when it recedes it looks like her folks are probs ok.

Uriel ...

Sick in both body and spirit, Xenia moves to the protection of the wall, slipping into darkness as she goes.

John, sorry I forgot that in order Toros to use his healing magic on himself he should have one hand free at least.

So please

either consider that he has placed his wand into his gear during his move so that he can heal himself,

or, just assume that he has hiden into shadows at full defense behind Garrett without healing himself at all. (hide, 33, move silently, 21)

Also, Garrett, I think you can reroll the 1s for healing, you do not need to use hero point.

I wanted to wait for Syr's post, so I'm only going to summarize the player's actions.

Uriel's player had sent a message asking to be written out of the game, which is why he was killed off in the last round.

Syr cries out as he is hit by the flamestrike and even his monk reflexes fail to save him. Realizing Toros is down and the group needs him, he doesn't heal but moves 5's forward and attacks #2 missing all 3 times.

Sensing its master's need, Toros' intelligent shield casts a healing spell upon the liontaur.

The light from the parchment begins to pulse. Appolo can see the light grawing stronger and fading.

Oni stands his ground and starts the incantations to summon a monster to assist the combatants. Since it is a full round action, he doesn't move but continues to chant and wave his arms. The bearded devil will answer the call next round.
DM - You didn't make a Concentration check for casting defensively, so I made it for you (24 vs. DC 20). The Summon Monster spells have 1 round casting times, so it will appear next round. Interestingly, Summon spells don't cause Invisibility to drop. And I moved you a 5' shift into the area where Garrett was.

Everyone now sees the pulses of light coming from the Inner Sanctum. The Red Cloaks cry out in dismay, realizing that something is happening to the prize that they seek.

Toros decides that discretion is the better part of valour, so he moves past Garrett to reach a spot where he can safely heal himself. On the way, he stows either his wand or crossbow and then invokes a healing spell.
DM - Treating this as a withdrawal, so no AoO from the Red Cloaks.

Garrett sees Toros tumble past him, so he moves to the offensive. He calls down the fury of Domi upon these evil-doers. He has the satisfaction of seeing all three of the evil clerics suffer the full effect of the spell but the third fighter in the twisted armor manages to avoid a portion of it. Then he moves around so as to replace Toros and face the Red Cloaks.

Xenia tosses another bead from the necklace at the approaching Red Cloaks. She manages to avoid all of her companions and catches five of the evil followers of Gargul in the blast. Then she moves over and hides in the shadows of the wall.

Appolo flinches when the light from the parchment suddenly climbs into a pillar-like form reaching to the ceiling. If he thought the light was bright before, now it is at least doubled in intensity.

Syrsteps up and tries to attack the Red Cloak that chopped Uriel down. He misses with all three of his attacks. But at least he's between the Red Cloaks and his more vulnerable companions.

========================================

Red Cloak R1 hisses in pain, drops his mace and pulls a wand from his belt. He taps himself with it and his wounds knit together.

Red Cloak R2 withdraws from the combat, moving backwards and hissing to R1, "Heal me, you fool, not yourself!"

Red Cloak R3 does the same as his companion, pulling a wand and healing himself.

The fighter in the twisted armor in front of Garrett moves 5' and then attacks the Protector of Domi.
First attack - hit AC 34, total 19 damage (4 evil)
Second attack - misses

The third cleric comes out of the hallway and heals the fighter who retreated.

The third fighter in twisted armor moves to attack Garrett as well. He swings his bastard sword at Garrett, barely hitting.
Attack - hits AC 31, damage = 21 + 7 evil

Garrett - take one AoO against either R2 or R6, AC26

========================================

Just after all of the Red Cloaks have acted, the pillar of light suddenly flashes. All of the Red Cloaks turn their heads and cry out from the sudden, blinding light.

The darkness that follows is even more absolute in comparison. There is only a small glimmer of light coming from above.

The rogue resists the urge to wipe the feversweat off her brow. Instead she brings the philter in her hand up to her mouth and rips out the cork with her teeth. A tip of the vial against her lips, and the dark rogue feels the invisible Shield raise up before her.

Time to poke someone.

On cat-feet, Xenia creeps along the wall and straight up to one of the red cloaks until she's standing right next to him, hiding in his shadow.

Hitting once with the flat of his hand (stunning attack save vs. DC 17).

Taking a moment to massage his burnt chest, he wonders what he is doing here versus obviously superior foes. He glances back to his companions for any signs of retreat or regroup but otherwise continues to hold his place in the front.

Benefiting from this life-saving treatment Toros takes time to retrieve his bag of tricks and summons an animal from this. The liontaur is still occupied with the front line fight rather than what Appolo is doing behind, hoping that this fight will be soon over, but perhaps not that soon. He maintains his defensive position, investigating around with his eyes that even can see in the low light.

Garrett chops into the retreating form of Red Cloak R2 and has the satisfaction of seeing the evil fighter fall.

Xenia downs a potion and sneaks closer to the fight. She is hiding beside Red Cloak R4, waiting to strike him down.

Appolo sees that the parchment is no longer where he had left it. In fact, when he looks around, he sees that the piles of treasure have disappeared along with most of the finished elements of the Inner Sanctum. It now seems more like a natural cavern than a holy place.

Syr could not attack the Red Cloak as he withdrew. (Withdrawal action, no AoO from leaving starting square) The elven monk takes out his frustration on Red Cloak R4 in front of him, hitting twice. The Red Cloak is not fazed by Syr's attempt to stun him.

Garrett calls upon Domi ... and something unusual happens. His request for strength is answered but its ... different ... somehow. Still, the added strength is useful as he lands a mighty blow on Red Cloak R4 beside him. The evil fighter should fall, but somehow he manages to remain on his feet. The Protector's second sword stroke goes wide.

Toros reaches into a bag at his waist and withdraws a bit of rust-coloured fluff. He tosses it to the ground nearby. The ball of fluff starts unfolding until a wolverine stands at Toros' side.

Oni completes his incantation and calls a barbed devil from another plane. The creature arrives between the two groups and immediately Oni commands it to attack. The devil works itself into frenzy, then swings its glaive at the back of Red Cloak R6 opening up two grievous wounsd that continue to drip blood.
First attack - hit AC 27, 13 damage
Second attack - hit AC 28 (threat, not confirmed), 10 damage

=========================================

Red Cloak R1 taps himself with the wand again. Then he stoops to pick up his mace from the floor. Oni's summoned devil takes the opportunity presented and brings his glaive down, slicing a blood-spurting wound in the evil cleric's back.
AoO - hit AC 28, 9 damage

Red Cloak R3 moves into the half light right beside the bearded devil, then tries to call upon Marteaus for strength. The devil cannot swing again so the spell is completed and the evil cleric visibly grows stronger.

Red Cloak R4 cannot see any safe path to withdraw so he stands and continues to fight. He swings his bastard sword at Syr, opening his wounds in the process. He fails to connect with the agile elven monk.

Attack - AC 23, miss

Red Cloak R5 stumbles out of the darkness directly into the barbed devil, then calls upon the dark power of Marteaus to draw life from the devil. He invokes the spell but is unable to touch the devil in the glimmering half-light that now fills the Sanctum. His hand is still wreathed with a malignant black aura, however.

Garrett continues to swing his longsword at the Red Cloak R6 in front of him. He hits twice, sorely wounding the evil fighter. After he does so, he asks his companions for aid in the fight.

Syr's keen elven eyes allow him to see in the half-light that now fills the Sanctum. He strikes the Red Cloak R4 in front of him and droves him to the floor. The Red Cloak is clearly dead.

Seeing her initial target fall, Xenia moves silently and hidden through the combatants until she stands behind the remaining fighter. She lurks there,
alert for a chance to strike.

Toros steps forwards and casts a curative spell on Garrett, mending his wounds.

Appolo runs towards the battle, drawing his swords as he moves. He ends standing beside Garrett, ready to engage the remaining Red Cloaks.

Oni cheers his devil on and begins the incantations to summon some more combatants.

Babu, as Oni has christened his summoned devil, continues to attack the Red Cloak standing in front of Garrett. The devil hits once and then stands glaring at the Red Cloaks surrounding him.
First - hit AC 32, 7 dmg
Second - miss AC 23

========================================

More rocks trickle down from above into the lit area. Everyone can now hear the sounds of combat.

========================================

Red Cloak R1 steps up and swings a mace at the devil. He connects only with the second strike but barely scratches the devil.
1st - miss AC 17
2nd - hit AC 18, 6 dmg

Red Cloak R3 also moves up so that he is flanking the devil and swings wide due to the poor light. His second swing hits the mark and inflicts damage on the devil.
1st - concealment miss
2nd - hit AC 27, 13 dmg

Red Cloak R5 still has the black nimbus surrounding his hand and attempts to touch the summoned devil. He touches the devil and wounds open all over Babu's body.
Touch = hit, AC 15, 31 dmg (successful save for half)

Red Cloak R6 continues trying to hit Garrett with his evil-tinged bastard sword but cannot get past the Protectors defences.
1st - miss, AC 22
2nd - miss, AC 29

Red Cloak R7 keeps trying to hit the devil. He manages to land an accurate but weak strike, then follows it with a stronger blow.
1st - hit, AC 32 (threat), AC 14 (not confirmed), 3 dmg
2nd - hit, AC 25 (threat), AC 22 (confirmed), 17 dmg

========================================

There is a slide of rocks falling down the tunnel followed by a group of people who slide down and land in the Sanctum. One of them speaks in a clear, ringing voice, "Careful, there seems to be another battle going on here. Stay together students."

Then the man turns to the party and hails them. "Ho there! Noble or Monster?"

After Oni finishes the summoning, Toros casts his silence spell on the wolverine and sends it to the other, darker, side of the door, near the redcloaks, away from his friends. Passing slowly near the leg of the enlarged Protector the wolverine carefully moves as told - hopefully ending at aj40, hiding in the darkness.

for a short while you may feel a disturbing silence, but dont worry, it is for the redcloaks the liontaur warns his companions.

Toros then retreats back into the shadows -hiding, 29, and moving silently, 31.
