A Hearth to Rest By - DM Donna
Wednesday November 16th, 2005 11:04:32 AM

"NO!"

Lian's offer to scout is countered by K'Nara's unusually-strident response.

"I don't want any of us splitting off from the others...no more disappearing Talons!" she insists, her eyes almost wild. "We'll all go into the place together...safety in numbers..."

She doesn't add "if there is any safety here at all"...but it hangs over everyone's heads.

The collection of buildings are sturdy (if crude-looking) cottages of wattle and thatch. Most of them look to be large enough to hold families of about four to six people. A handful of them seem to be a bit larger. They all roughly circle an area that has been paved in cobblestones and sports a large well in the center. The plaza has posts set all around it--in the posts are set sconces for holding torches, so that the plaza is lit by torchlight.

There is clearly an assemblage of people near the well--they all hold buckets and/or other such vessels for water. On a fairly regular basis, one of the people approaches the well and fills his or her bucket, then walks off towards a cottage or returns to a knot of fellow draughters to speak to them.

One thing becomes increasingly evident--

--the people aren't human. They are goblins for the most part, although the unmistakeable outlines of larger, bulkier trolls are evident as well.

"Look, Mama, look!" a child's voice suddenly cries. "A bunch of placers!" A young goblinoid is now jumping up and down and pointing in the direction of the party.

All eyes turn towards the Talons...

Falin looks around as they walk into the town, if that is what you would call it.

He begins to open his mouth when he realizes they are surrounded by goblins and trolls. He begins to look around for different avenues of escape or possible building thet can be used to fight off an attack. (Spot 13)

"Safety in numbers..." Falin says and just lets it trail off.

Wednesday November 16th, 2005 8:33:50 PM

Lian smirks at K'Nara. "Don't yell, you'll hurt my feelings!" he winks.

As they move along, he looks on in silence at the goblins. Diplomacy isn't Lian's thing.

He looks around to see if the other goblinoids are moving in around the group (Spot 14, Sense Motive 30).

"What's a placer?"

Milo
Wednesday November 16th, 2005 8:42:42 PM

Looking over the villagers warily Milo speaks in low tones to K'nara, "Um... this IS there home. Maybe we should try and make nice with the...goblins and trolls?" Milo steps between Olana and the villagers.

Gunther
Thursday November 17th, 2005 12:10:21 AM

The warrior rolls his eyes. Great. Goblins...smelly, nasty stinky goblins. Brains the size of ants...Oh wait...a Troll!! Now that was more like it!! Not much for conversation, but man were they fun in a brawl! Gunther shrugs at Lian's remarks. "I vould imagine dat dey don't see many humans or elves for dat matter. Dey might even be vary or afraid of us. Ve should be careful how ve behave."

Lian  d20-1=11
Thursday November 17th, 2005 2:46:01 AM

Lian throws caution to the wind.
"We mean you no harm. We only require a guide or at least some knowledge of this area then we'll be on the way. We can trade for the information." (bad Diplomacy check of 11)
Lian cringes at the next words he is about to say, "Take us to your leader." He fully expects a hand to slap him in the back of his head, either K'Nara's or Bert's.

Before they get close enough to be observed, Ingrge casts a spell on himself (detet thoughts) and as they approach he randomly starts reading the surface thoughts of those in the square.

Olanna:

Following along, olanna lookis neither right or left or even where she is going but just trudges along, feet scuffing up clouds of dust with each step. As the others slow down she keeps on walking unless she is stopped.

as they party arrives at the area around the well she looks at nothing and nearly walks ove a small child that darts in front of her. She doesnt even seem to notice he was there or that he is now gone.

Can't We All Just Get Along..? - DM Donna
Friday November 18th, 2005 12:27:01 AM

The Talons find themselves the center of attention from a large collection of goblins and a few trolls as well. Once more the high-pitched voice of a young goblin speaks:

"Ooooo...Mama, Mama...are the placers gonna go see M'Lady? I wanna go, too! She's so sweet and kind!"

"Hush, Jekl!" the female goblin whose hem the youngster was tugging shushes her child. One of the trolls--a rather familiar-looking one at that--steps forward with a puzzled look on his face, bowing to Lian in a jerky manner.

"Welcome to Reston, strangers." the troll says (even the voice is familiar, though it's a chore to place it...)

DM OOC: those who want to try must make an Intelligence check versus DC20 to detect the resemblance to Gutmasher Tremtol from the Arena.

"Our leader is Lady Fidelia, but she doesn't reside very close to our humble village." the troll tells you. "Please forgive the stares--it isn't often that placers come to Reston...they usually by-pass us completely and journey on to M'Lady's castle or to the Wanderers' Refuge."

You all notice that the humanoids wear simple, rather rough clothing, some of them bearing some implements of craft: the troll in the leather apron is doubtless a smith of some kind, while the portly goblin with a flour-stained apron of cloth must be a baker.

"You heard Jekl call you 'placers'..." the troll continues, "...it is our term from those who don't come from Harrowed Moon--originally the children pointed out that strangers were from some 'other place', and this shortened down to 'placers' whenever we speak of them."

At this point, K'Nara's hand shoots out and latches onto Olana's shoulder, staying the elf from continuing to mindlessly walk about.

"Mama..!" the adolescent goblin--still staring but this time at Olana--says in a stage whisper to his mother, "Mama! The pretty placer looks like she's got the Blank Sickness!" Jekl's mother gasps--horror etched on her face--then snatches up her child and hastens away to one of the nearby cottages, quickly disappearing inside.

"Please forgive the young one," the troll says with a frown, "He has no tact and is fascinated by placers whenever they appear." The troll fastens red-rimmed eyes upon the party.

"What brings you to Reston, now? How can we be of service to you..?"

Falin
Friday November 18th, 2005 2:03:24 PM

Upon hearing that they are not going to be shredded into little pieces Falin lets his guard down a bit.

Seems our battle may not be here at this village Falin thinks to himself.

Lian
Friday November 18th, 2005 6:56:09 PM

Lian looks at K'Nara, then back at the troll. "Fact is, we are not really sure. We were participating in a legendary event. We succeed in finishing. Then we were here."

"Fidelia is the leader here in Reston?"

Gunther  d20+1=4
Saturday November 19th, 2005 12:26:56 AM

The warrior smiles at all the goblins and trolls around. In a small way, it was kind of like being home. Oooo...that troll looks kinda familiar. Maybe I fought him once or something (Int.=4). Rooting through his backpack, Gunther pulls out a small gem and hands it to the troll that has been so informative. "Geben Sie diesem zum wenig ein bitte. Er erinnert mich an mich, als ich klein war." he says very politely in Orcish. Then he looks to K'nara. "Vell, should ve go to M'Lady? She sounds interesting."

Milo
Saturday November 19th, 2005 2:45:59 AM

Milo too grabs Olana's hand to keep her in one place. Smiling gratefully at the troll, "We're not sure where we are in relation to home, but home is where we're trying to get to. Maybe Lady Fidelia can help us with getting home?"

Ingrge
Saturday November 19th, 2005 9:42:53 AM

Ingrge focusses in on reading the thoughts of Jekl's mother to find out more about hat she might know or suspect about Olanna's illness.

Getting Answers--Spoken & Otherwise - DM Donna
Saturday November 19th, 2005 12:01:37 PM

"Lady Fidelia rules Harrowed Moon." the troll explains. "Reston is but one village within Harrowed Moon. We are a small place, so we all help each other here--there really is no one leader in this particular village. We all swear fealty to the Lady." Gunther hands over the gem to the speaker, whose knobby eyebrows raise in surprise.

"Been a dog's age since I heard Orcish." the troll admits. "And I will see that Jekl gets this--it is shiny and glittery, so he'll probably like it." The troll puts the gem in his pocket with a baring of his teeth (apparently the troll version of smiling.)

"I see you all have a large amount of these with you." he points out (at least, you assume that the troll is a "he".) "Normally you could probably count on brigands and such attempting to waylay you for it, but Harrowed Moon doesn't value these things like other places do--gems and jewelry are pretty, but you can't eat them and there are none here with the inclination to buy or own them. We'd rather eat and be warm and safe when the moon goes down." Milo's dialogue gets the troll's attention now.

"If anyone in this land can help you, it would be M'Lady Fidelia." the humanoid says emphatically, his statement punctuated by the enthusiastic nods and murmurs of the other villagers within earshot. "She is human, like you..." here he points to K'Nara, "...she is wise and kind. I have no doubt that she would do everything in her power to aid you in your return to your home." Ingrge's spell picks up curiosity and excitement about the Talons, along with the consensus that this Lady Fidelia IS kind and wise and generous...as well as the odd thought or two that some of Lady Fidelia's deputies aren't as well-liked.

When the elven weapon-mage turns his concentration on Jekl's mother, he finds that the female goblin is extremely worried that Jekl will not keep to himself and possibly catch the dreaded Blank Sickness from Olana.

Jekl, it seems, is considered far TOO curious for his own safety.

Brother Bertram
Monday November 21st, 2005 7:19:41 PM

Bertram scratches at his beard absently as he ponders these other 'placers'. "What happens to these placers? Do they find a way home? Or are they trapped here?"

Lian
Monday November 21st, 2005 8:00:08 PM

"This Fidelia. When did she come to this place?

Does she have a residence in this area or do we have to travel a great distance?"

Milo
Monday November 21st, 2005 9:26:00 PM

Milo perks up at the mention of Lady Fidelia being the one in the know, "Could you provide us with directions to Lady Fidelia's place? I think that we need to ask her for help."

Gunther
Monday November 21st, 2005 9:38:41 PM

The warrior smiles back at the troll and nods his head in approval at the Talons' wise questions.

Falin
Monday November 21st, 2005 10:17:20 PM

Trolls and goblins being nice? Falin thinks to himself.

"Does Fidelia have the power to send us home? Is she a great wizard?" Falin asks the big troll.

More Answers - DM Donna
Monday November 21st, 2005 11:23:32 PM

The troll appears to think carefully before answering the various questions.

"Reston is a very small place within the boundaries of Harrowed Moon," he explains to Bertram, "So we don't see many placers--once or twice a year we might be visited by two or three of them. Honestly, your group is the most we've ever seen at one time and the only placers to come here at all this year. Most placers get directions to M'Lady's castle and then go there at moonrise, when it's safest to journey on the roads." The troll nods and then shrugs. "We never see them again after that, so M'Lady must have helped them get back to their places, I'm sure." He turns to Lian now.

"Lady Fidelia has always been here, as far as I know." he tells the elf. "Her castle can be found if you follow the road that brought you into Reston, but go the opposite way you came to get here. It's a full day's journey even on the road, though. If you plan to go, you'd best rest up within the boundaries of Reston and then set out with the moonrise. That way you're less likely to get eaten by something in the Desolation before you get to see the Lady."

Nodding to Milo, the troll agrees with the halfling's supposition.

"Lady Fidelia is your best bet to leave Harrowed Moon." he says firmly, and his head bob includes Falin. "The Lady has...deputies that are likely the ones who can help you home. I don't think M'Lady has spells of her own--though she is so wise and smart, I suppose it wouldn't be too surprising to find that she may be able to cast a spell or two herself."

"It's close to noon now..." K'Nara says, glancing at the lilac sphere almost directly overhead.

"Well--we call it 'midmoon'..." corrects the troll with another "friendly" show of teeth.

"Um...yes...midmoon..." the leader of the Talons agrees, "...but you say that it will take the whole of the day to get from here to Lady Fidelia's castle?"

"Only if you aren't bogged down by that stuff." the troll replies, hooking a thumb at the quite-full disks of loot. "Look--I own the largest living quarters here in the village. Since I'm a bachelor, I offer my rooms to the traders that come here regularly. You all look like you can use the sanctuary from the things that roam the areas outside the roadways. I'd be honored if you rested in my rooms until you get yourselves ready to journey to Lady Fidelia's castle. What say you..?"

Lian
Tuesday November 22nd, 2005 1:45:54 AM

"Well, it seems we best make fast friends of this Fidelia." Suggests the monk.

The elf turns to the troll. "These 'Placers' you say have come here... have they all left or have they made homes here?" His face twists slightly. "Or have they survived at all?"

Falin reaches into his quiver and produced several gems of assorted color and holds them out. "What do you say?"

Resting in Reston - DM Donna
Thursday November 24th, 2005 12:52:51 PM

"Placers never really stay long." the troll replies to Lian's initial question. "I've only ever known one that's actually remained in Harrowed Moon..." Here the humanoid shows all his teeth in a troll grin. "...that would be me."

K'Nara--who'd been about to say something to Gunther--turns wide eyes to the troll upon hearing that admission.

"You're not from Harrowed Moon?" she asks.

"No--I'm originally from Izen." he answers. "Bonecrusher Tremtol, at your service..." he adds belatedly with a bow, "...I was an arena announcer when I ventured a little too close to the Bone Tower in anticipation of welcoming the first champions from the Arena back out--dawn came and they didn't emerge, but then I got sucked into a burst of shadows that appeared in the area just as the door in the tower disappeared." Bonecrusher shook his head ruefully. "I was lucky--I appeared rather close to Reston when I came here, so I was able to outrun the skulls that greeted me when I first got here." The troll grimaces in remembrance. After Falin's comment and the elf's offer of gems to the troll, Bonecrusher waves away the hand stretched out to him.

"No, no--thanks for the offer, but those do us no good here." he tells Falin. "Come, come...my house is this way..." He leads the party to what must be the largest of the cottages in this place. It's of sturdy construction (wattle & thatch like the others), though it does have a second story.

The first floor of the place has several rooms, including a nicely-sized great room with a kitchen off one end. The furnishings, like the house, are simple but sturdy.

"The entire upper floor is available for your use." Bonecrusher says, bowing.

Gunther

The warrior sets about making sure all the treasure is transported safely. When all seems to be in order, Gunther pulls K'nara aside. "Vell my love, at last ve have some safe time. Vhat do you say ve take advantage of it? I tink I saw a nice cozy room over dere...I could spread out some blankets if you vant...make a nice place for us to snuggle up." Gunther grins goofily as he gestures toward the room.

Settling In - DM Donna
Saturday November 26th, 2005 12:31:35 AM

Ingrge's careful concentration eventually gleans a few more facts about the Lady Fidelia:

1. She is generally very well-liked and perceived as a kind and generous lady who genuinely cares for everyone in Harrowed Moon. She visits places like Reston once or twice a year (the party missed her last appearance here in the village by a month or so.)

2. The deputy that the people of Reston have the most experience with is Amalie, a young woman (also human) who is a very strict interpreter of the few rules that bind the village to Lady Fidelia. Amalie is viewed as a very strict sort of "marshall", and there are quite a few of the citizens who are very much in awe/fear of her because of her position in relation to Lady Fidelia.

3. At least one or two of the people in the village fleetingly thought that Olana would be easy pickings for a tasty elven treat to relieve a diet of mushrooms and the occasional underground rodent.

K'Nara nods to the others and then to Bonecrusher.

"You're related to Gutmasher, aren't you?" she asks.

"He's a cousin." Bonecrusher nods. "We both wanted to be in showbiz, so he got the announcer gig when I ended up here. I still manage to talk to him via our magic mirror set-up."

"Ah...so it may be possible to send a message back to our home?" K'Nara muses.

"If you came from The Wold, then, yes, I could try to get in touch with Gut for you." Bonecrusher agrees. "The mirror works only intermittenly...but I never really know when it's going to make the connection until it does...and then, sometimes, Gut isn't in the room when the connection gets made. It's hit or miss--but it DOES 'hit' eventually."

"That's good to know." the leader of the Talons says with a nod.

"I'm going to see about getting my water for the day." Bonecrusher tells the Talons. "If the well is up to snuff, I'll be able to get water for you all, too..." So saying, the troll departs the premises, leaving the Talons to their devices.

"C'mon, Gunther..." K'Nara turns to the tall burly fighter, "...we have to find the room where all THAT--" she waves a hand at the piles of gems and the chests, "--is going to go. Then we really need to talk..."

The tall blade singer mounts the stairs to the upper story...

Brother Bertram

"Hold Friend", Bertram says raising a hand. "Get me some pots and perhaps I can help you and our party with the water problem."

Takin' Care of Business - DM Donna
Monday November 28th, 2005 10:57:43 PM

Betram finds that he can, indeed, conjure forth the water...though only he knows how sluggish and hesitant even that power comes forth when he commands it. Bonecrusher is delighted with the results, though, and babbles his gratitude practically non-stop for quite some time after.

Milo finds a cozy room that has furnishings that, for once, aren't scaled to human-or-bigger dimensions. It's a nice change--the beds in the room are long enough that Olana can lie down on them without having to scrunch up, yet not so high off the ground that Milo has to climb up on a stool to get into them, either.

Olana follows directions, not seeming to do more than blink at her surroundings.

There are several other rooms on the second floor, one of which K'Nara directs the unseen servants and the disks with the treasure. She reserves the two locked chests and directs Gunther to put them in an adjacent room.

"Gunther..." she begins to speak, her hazel eyes sharpening considerably as she regards the rough-and-ready fighter, "...I haven't had much of a chance to really talk to you. I don't really know you that well--however, I can see that it's obvious that you DO like me. I'm flattered...but we can't just jump into being together. I'd rather get to know you a bit more. I hope you understand..."

Gunther
Monday November 28th, 2005 11:51:30 PM

The warrior is taken back by K'nara's words...and confusion is written all over his face. "Vat do you mean I like you?? You're de von who started all dis. Vhy else vould you keep hitting me?" Gunther runs his fingers through his all white hair, clearly trying to slowly process everything. "I mean, don't get me wrong...I do like you...but I vas just responding to your advances." Gunther looks up at K'nara, trying keep the panic sitting in his gut like a brick from showing on his face. "Does dis mean dat you don't like me? Did I do something wrong?? It vas the corpse goo vasn't it...I should have known dat vas a wrong idea..."

K'Nara
Tuesday November 29th, 2005 12:30:06 AM

The flame-haired blade singer heaved a sigh that was tinged with impatience.

"Look--I'm trying to explain that I hadn't been paying attention to how my actions may have effected you." she explained. "I actually DO like you--really...but we're in a place that is getting on everyone's nerves. We have to concentrate on getting out of here alive." She grinned ruefully. "Like how you managed to show us all how to get out of that poison-gas room alive back in the Bone Tower. That was cool...in spite of the corpse goo..."

Lian
Tuesday November 29th, 2005 3:47:06 AM

Having followed the red head to the upper floor to help with the loot, the monk sees what is about to happen when she begins to speak.

Olana and Milo's courtship wasn't nearly this... well, whatever it was, this was harder to watch. The monk holds the whole group in his heart. He would hate seeing any of them get hurt feelings.

Trying to keep out of it directly and keep the great warrior's feelings from getting hurt, he tries to distract from the conversation.
"Well, I think we do need to get some rest. K'nara, should we set watch here with the loot?" He says as he moves some sacks to the other room.

The warrior nods at K'nara soberly. Note to self...corpse goo is not a good idea... he thinks. "Yes, I understand now. I am sorry I misunderstood before." he says simply waving a hand at Lian trying to discreetly dismiss the elf. "If you don't mind, Miss K'nara, I vill stay in dis room vith de loot. Dat vay ve don't need to post any guards...not dat ve really needed to anyvay. But it vill be von last ting you need to vorry about."

Two Mysterious Chests - DM Donna
Wednesday November 30th, 2005 12:27:11 AM

K'Nara positively beams at Gunther.

"Don't call me 'Miss K'Nara'..." she says, "...we've saved each other's lives a few times over now--K'Nara will do just fine. I want to take the time to get to know more about you, but we already have a good start, I think." The woman looks around the room, nodding. "Thank you for volunteering to stay here..."

Ingrge's discoveries are fielded by the group's leader, who nods a bit at the elf's opinion about seeking out this "Amalie"...and frowns a bit when she hears about the anticipated change of local diet. Ingrge can assure K'Nara, however, that--although rather colorful in their unexpectedness--none of the thoughts that had cast Olana as an entree were sharp-edged plans to get the elf...more like rather wistful dreaming.

"We should rest up as best we can here before setting out to find either Amalie or the Lady Fidelia..." K'Nara points out.

"If you want to meet Amalie," Bonecrusher volunteers, "She comes around rather regularly...she'll probably be here tomorrow or the next day."

K'Nara's sharp hazel eyes come to rest on the two chests that the party managed to haul out of the Bone Tower...the ones that are still locked.

"After we're a bit more rested and less...tense..." she says, nodding at the containers, "...I'd like to see what's in those..."

"We should wait for this Amalie, then," K'Nara agrees with Ingrge, "We can probably get another perspective on this place and the Lady who rules it."

Each in their own way, the Talons manage to relax a bit and actually rest without having to worry about creepy things in the night trying to attack them.

Bonecrusher provides a nice meal--a type of mushroom souffle, which he says is the main staple of the food around here, although the villagers do manage to get some meat and fish on occasion. He promises that, tomorrow night, he will be able to make some fish stew from the stores that he has. He hadn't been expecting company or he'd've made it for tonight's dinner.

After the meal, the Talons are able to turn their attention to the two chests that were taken from the Bone Tower...

Milo
Wednesday November 30th, 2005 10:53:31 PM

Milo eats and gets Olana to eat as best he can. Then he sits back and rests, watching out for his other friends as well as Olana.

Lian
Thursday December 1st, 2005 3:04:44 AM

Lian looks on, from a distance, as the others ponder the chests.

Gunther
Thursday December 1st, 2005 11:18:30 PM

The cat trainer stretches out after the relaxing meal. "Vell, I could alvays open it orc style...but it's probably best to let Milo take a crack at it first."

Open To Suggestions - DM Donna
Friday December 2nd, 2005 12:31:35 AM

"Yes, Milo..." K'Nara says with a nod and a smile to Gunther, "...why don't you see how your many skills fare against these two chests...?"

If Milo takes up the challenge, he'll have to state what he is doing and make Skill rolls for his stated actions.

Lian
Friday December 2nd, 2005 2:12:36 AM

Lian smiles at K'Nara. "I can open them." He winks.

Brother Bertram
Friday December 2nd, 2005 4:03:48 AM

Bertram watches with interest as the others attempt to open the chests they recovered.

Ingrge
Friday December 2nd, 2005 5:29:27 PM

As Lian approaches the chests, Ingrge moves to the other side of the room and watches ready to duck and cover in needed.

(sorry Jay, but I don't think Ingrge has ever seen Lian play with traps before so....)

Lian (OOC)
Friday December 2nd, 2005 7:16:55 PM

OOC: I never said that Lian was approaching the chests and it should be clear to ALL the Talons that Lian is joking. :)

Falin
Saturday December 3rd, 2005 9:17:53 AM

Shaking his head a little as if waking from a dream, Falin looks around at what is going on. He walks up behind whoever decided to open the chests in order to possible render assistance if things go ugly.

DM Donna
Sunday December 4th, 2005 12:52:44 PM

...still waiting for Milo to post...

Gunther
Sunday December 4th, 2005 2:38:25 PM

Watches with baited breath to see what Milo does with the chests.

Milo  d20+17=36 d20+17=30
Monday December 5th, 2005 12:11:09 AM

Though temporarily distracted, Milo soon snaps to attention, nodding to K'nara. Taking his time, the halfling thoroughly inspects both chests for possible traps. Once it is clear there is no further danger, Milo works quickly to open them up.(OOC: Taking 20 to search the chests for a result of DC 35. If Milo finds a trap he'll attempt to disarm them [DC 36 and 30]. Milo takes 20 to open each chest for an Open Locks check of DC 42.)

Lian
Monday December 5th, 2005 9:50:45 AM

Regardless of Milo's endless talents and steady heands, Lian takes up a position somewhere well away from the chest (but still within visual range).

Whatcha Got..? - DM Donna
Monday December 5th, 2005 5:55:28 PM

Milo's skill & expertise find no traps, and make very short work of the locks on the two chests. Within the chests:

A long sword in a beaten but finely-tooled scabbard; an axe of most excellent craftsmanship; a suit of golden chainmail; and a very battered backpack. The backpack is heavy with items inside it.

Milo  d20+17=34
Monday December 5th, 2005 8:42:08 PM

Continuing to take his time, Milo searches the backpack for possible traps, and then proceeds to open it. (OOC: Take 20 to find traps DC 35. DC 34 to Disable if a trap exists.)

Gunther
Tuesday December 6th, 2005 12:42:49 AM

The warrior laughs as Milo makes such an easy task of opening the chest. He watches with interest as the rogue turns to the backpack, wondering what kind of riches might be inside.

Falin
Tuesday December 6th, 2005 8:17:21 AM

"Such skill with the fingers calls for compliments." Says Falin from behind Milo. "Good job friend."

Falin awaits to see what the backpack holds.

Olana  Howdy folks! It's good to be back.
Tuesday December 6th, 2005 11:27:09 AM

Olana's eyes follow the movement in the room. There's a sense of anticipation that registers at gut level. Danger?
She sits up, but the howling empty cavern in her head becomes confused. So, should she lie down or sit up?
Olana frowns.

Lian
Tuesday December 6th, 2005 11:55:45 AM

Lian's eyes drift absently over the members of the group while watching the halfling's skills and fall upon Olana. They move back to the chests and backpack, then he double-takes at the elven ranger.

Stunned, he blinks for a few seconds, then says, "Friends... our lobotomized ranger seems to be stirring! Perhaps she's back with the 'living'?"

Brother Bertram
Tuesday December 6th, 2005 7:21:12 PM

Bertram eyes Olana with interest, glad to see any signs of life within her. He watches to see if there is more or if it were an odd, solitary occurence.

The Treasure Within - DM Donna
Tuesday December 6th, 2005 9:49:30 PM

K'Nara's attention is diverted to Olana...but the elf maid doesn't appear to be any closer to regaining herself than she was before, for Olana still can't seem to initiate action for herself.

"Sit here, then..." the blade singer bids Olana softly, leading the elf to a chair near where Milo is carefully checking the backpack over before opening it. (OOC: no traps on this one, either.)

Inside the backpack: A silver holy symbol depicting three joined circles surrounded by a larger one; a twisted gold-and-silver band that looks like it may fit someone's finger; a set of four flat iron bars; a pouch of soft suede; another pouch of heavy linen; a figurine of a small white horse; a couple of sets of serviceable, human-sized tunics and breeches; a dried bottle of ink; a quill case and an old journal.

Gunther
Wednesday December 7th, 2005 1:20:08 AM

The warrior yawns and stretches...the stress of the road catching up with him. Olana's sudden activity brings him to a heightened alert. His excitement is dashed though as K'nara notes that she doesn't seem to be recovering. He looks longingly at the items recovered from the chest. "I don't suppose ve can tell vhat dey are tonight? Dey might come in handy."

Falin
Wednesday December 7th, 2005 3:27:47 AM

"I agree with Gunther," says Falin. "If there is a way to identify them it may be beneficial."

Looking over at Olana there is a sudden elation in his demeanor and then with K'Nara's realization he is brought back to reality and he returns to his normally sad looking state.

Lian
Wednesday December 7th, 2005 10:57:01 AM

Lian's eyes widen when they fall on the holy symbol. "That is truly interesting. May I take that piece?" He askes the group hopefully. (He's referring to the linked circles of silver.) Nothing else seems to catch his eye.

Ingrge
Wednesday December 7th, 2005 7:44:53 PM

Ingrge looks at the pile and shakes his head. I will not be able to do anything about those until tomorrow morning when I can memorize a few identify spells to use on them. I think figment might be interested in that ring. As for me I am always in need of pots for my inks and quills for my scroll writing.

Stuff - DM Donna
Wednesday December 7th, 2005 8:30:45 PM

K'Nara sighs.

"I have to wait until tomorrow, too," she says, "My usual allotment of spells conjured the unseen servants...so I've nothing left to cast--" Her hazel eyes squint at the sight of the old holy symbol.

"Why does that look familiar..?" she asks as Lian is handed the finely-crafted item. Something else that catches her eye: that leather-bound journal.

"Hmmm...it seems to be written in an older dialect of Common..." K'Nara points out as she eyes the first few pages...

Milo
Wednesday December 7th, 2005 8:59:00 PM

His job done, Milo returns to Olana's side, where he remains. Concern creases the halfling's brow as he sees to her comfort.

Olana
Wednesday December 7th, 2005 9:57:43 PM

The elf moves to the new position, and sits. Here is a new viewpoint, and the scene changes as the others move in front of her, or away. No sense of danger. Not now.
Her eyes, like dark glass, sweep over Milo's features close by. They stay cold, while the rest of her face attempts to mimic his concern. Muscle memory. Habit.

Gunther
Wednesday December 7th, 2005 11:33:03 PM

The cat trainer scratches himself idly. "Vell den, I suppose I deres no need in staying up. I'm bushed. I tink I'll go get myself some rest."

Brother Bertram
Thursday December 8th, 2005 3:03:47 AM

Bertram keeps an eye on Olana as some of the others sort through the chest.

Falin
Thursday December 8th, 2005 8:17:23 AM

"I think I will follow suit with Gunther and go to sleep myself. Has been a long night-day thing."

Falin will go to whatever area he had picked out for sleeping and lay out. As he drifts off his thoughts are filled with flying skulls and of darkness...

As the night continues Falin's dreams become more and more horrific. "Not my flesh... Not my flesh." He can be heard mumbling through the night along with some other unintelligible phrases.

As the moon dawns Falin's dreams become more real to him and he wakes in a fit of sreams that thrashing about. As if his very life depended on him waking up. He wakes with his eyes wide and covered in sweat. "The flying skulls haught my dreams." He says in an almost unaudible whisper as his hands clench and unclench around the blanket he slept on.

Lian
Thursday December 8th, 2005 10:44:25 AM

"Fine work Milo." Smiles the elf.

He turns his attention to the holy symbol. "Don't know. The symbol seems to remind me of some long ago. Maybe a former life or something." There is something odd in how he says this sentence.
He casts detect magic on this lot of goods, concentrating on the symbol specifically.

(OOC: What size are the set of four flat iron bars?)

Brother Bertram

Bertram minds to Olana, not worrying about the treasure as the others peruse it. He frowns distractedly at the way Lian said something but it slipped from his mind too fast to contemplate.

Details, Details... - DM Donna
Thursday December 8th, 2005 9:56:08 PM

Looking over the items with a more discerning eye, the party members who do so find more clues:

The longsword is a fantastic piece of craftsmanship--it has the name Rightbite inscribed along the blade in an elegant script (in Common).

The axe is heavy and seems to made of black iron-like metal--if it's steel, it's a rather crude mix, yet it is amazingly devoid of rust or pits.

The golden metal of the chainmail armor seems to defy easy identification--at least, it isn't easily identifiable by merely inspecting it. It, too, is of astounding craftsmanship.

The set of four flat iron bars are about 14 inches or so long and about an inch or so thick...and each of them have a button on one end.

The suede pouch holds four blocks of incense that smells of sandalwood and sage.

The linen pouch has three ceramic jars (palm-sized) with silver screw-on tops.

The quill case has two quills in it.

The white horse seems to be a carving-in-progress (substance could be ivory.)

The clothes look like they'd fit a human of about six feet in height but rather broad in the chest. Several of the items are very nicely mended.

The bottle of ink is dry.

K'Nara is now sitting, cross-legged, on the floor, intensely interested in the journal as she pours over page after page...

Milo
Friday December 9th, 2005 12:57:55 AM

Milo nods appreciatively toward Lian, but maintains his place near Olana.

Lian
Friday December 9th, 2005 3:19:42 AM

Lian concentrates his detect magic on the holy symbol.

"These items are interesting."

Ingrge
Friday December 9th, 2005 2:08:32 PM

So Betram, fancy yourself another axe to carry around?

Brother Bertram
Friday December 9th, 2005 4:47:31 PM

Bertram smiles at Ingrge, "Ah but what axe could hope to compete with the one I have now, Friend Ingrge?" He looks at the axe with interest, wondering what marvelous secrets it might hold.

Olana
Friday December 9th, 2005 9:26:10 PM

The muscles on Olana's face relax, having forgotten why, or being merely tired from the exercise of showing concern.
She stares ahead.

A Tale to Tell... - DM Donna
Friday December 9th, 2005 9:37:45 PM

"This is rather interesting..." K'Nara says suddenly from her position on the floor, "...apparently this is a journal of some paladin of Alemi...a guy named Roderigo Montoya..."

She begins to read aloud from the tome:

"My guide has proven as good as his word. Though I was loath to trust the word of a goblin it seems I was wrong to be so suspicious. He has indeed brought me to the foothills of the mysterious realm known only as Harrowed Moon.

When I began my quest to bring the Holy Word of Alemi to the forsaken souls of these far-flung Realms I anticipated that I would encounter horror and evil. I had heard rumours that this place was a province of Marteaus, ruled by some terrifying witch of his, that the populace were brutal, savage servants of their dark mistress. Terror was expected. What I did not expect was to be met with such serene, still beauty.

This land is a marvel. Beneath her eternal lilac moon the Realm exists like some bewitching twilight dream, her palette of purples, blues and deep velvet blacks a soothing tonic to the mind. I don't ever recall having felt so calm.

Everything here is strange. The air carries countless wonderful musky aromas whose source I can only guess at. Crystalline outcroppings tower over still, mercurial pools. There are many curious moulds and fungi which seem to flourish in this half light, delicate and elaborate. I must collect some specimens to examine further. My guide, clearly a superstitious type, claims that the plant life here can move towards light! I am looking forward to learning more of the folktales of these simple, happy people.

That has been perhaps my greatest surprise. To find a community made up primarily of Goblins and Trolls living in peace, harmony and happiness! I would have never believed that such base creatures were capable of building such a successful community. By all accounts they have their Queen, the Lady Fidelia to thank for their conversion to civilization. They speak of her in glowing, even loving terms, and I am looking forward to meeting with her. The horror stories I was told are quite clearly the tall tales of the ignorant. After rest I shall visit her Twilight Palace. I am certain that with reasoned persuasion and pure heart she will prove a powerful convert to Great Alemi's cause."

Gunther
Friday December 9th, 2005 11:02:09 PM

The warrior listens sleepily as K'nara reads from the journal. "Vell dat's interesting." he says half heartedly. "Nice to know dat somevon else tinks dis place is as nice as ve tink it is." Gunther eyes the new treasure admiringly, but knows better than to mess with any of it. He remembers all too well the time that Orlash tried on a belt from a treasure horde they'd found... It was amazing how many hours it took to refit and mold Orlashina's armor to her new from once she was transformed into a she-orc!

Milo
Saturday December 10th, 2005 2:12:52 AM

"Are there any entries made in the journal after that, K'nara? I'd be curious of his impressions of the Lady herself." Milo looks up expectantly.

Falin
Saturday December 10th, 2005 6:56:16 AM

Falin raises hmself up on an elbow as he listens to K'Nara read the passage.

"Sounds as if he had been in this very village. Unless there are others of this kind through the surrounding area."

As he lowers himself back down he notices the armor. "You know, that armor strikes a remarkable resemblance to my own."

He pulls back one of his shirt sleeves to reveal a chain mail made of a golden metal of exquisite quality.

Brother Bertram
Sunday December 11th, 2005 9:26:28 PM

"Evidently a rather dead paladin of Alemi, Friend K'nara", Bertram points out. I still would urge great caution when approaching this 'Lady'".

Lian
Monday December 12th, 2005 11:04:13 AM

The hand of Domi raises an eyebrow. "Interesting."

Olana
Monday December 12th, 2005 3:55:48 PM

Olana sits passively. Her ears are listening to the story, and a disengaged mind picks up a random phrase.
'Guh... goblins.... and trollz,' she whispers, rolling the 'r' in 'troll' for no apparent reason.

The Mystery Deepens - DM Donna
Monday December 12th, 2005 11:31:18 PM

K'Nara thumbs through the pages of the well-worn journal.

"There's some other stuff in here about how his dreams seem to be getting creepy..." the leader of the Talons says, "...though he seems to describe meeting Lady Fidelia as 'a favored encounter with gentility and grace, and an exceedingly thoughtful countenance'..." She trails off as she reads intently.

Falin's comparison of the suit of chainmail does, indeed, seem to point out the amazing similarities in the two metallic items.

Gunther
Tuesday December 13th, 2005 1:51:29 AM

Quite unexpectedly, the warrior begins to doze off...a slight snore emerging from his lips occasionally.

Lian
Tuesday December 13th, 2005 10:49:56 AM

Sensing some sort of confusion in her voice, Lian looks up at Olana and says softly. "There are no trolls or goblins near by friend Olana. Stay calm. We are safe."

Ingrge
Tuesday December 13th, 2005 1:15:53 PM

Showing some interest in what is being read, Ingrge sighs outloud and turns to Knara.

"K'nara, Cut to the chase and read the last entry already. Everything sounds just tooo pleasant and comfortable. Which usually leads to everybody dying."

Olana
Tuesday December 13th, 2005 9:59:58 PM

The elf's face swivels toward Lian, and her shark-dead eyes stare at him.

Milo
Wednesday December 14th, 2005 1:00:39 AM

Milo listens intently to K'nara as she reads from the book, though he has nothing to say regarding its contents, which seem to be benign. At the same time, he keeps a watchful eye on Olana, who seems to be reacting somewhat to the world around her on some level.

Last, But Not Least - DM Donna
Wednesday December 14th, 2005 1:05:17 AM

K'Nara raises an eyebrow when Gunther nods off, but she really can't blame him. The journal was getting rather boring.

Ingrge's suggestion has the chestnut-maned blade singer flip over to the back of the book and eye the pages.

"This is odd..." she says, pointing to the raggedy edges of paper, "...the last page of the journal is ripped out." K'Nara squints at the entry that is left.

"Seems that the paladin was getting paranoid." she informs those still awake. "He writes of hearing odd noises in the night outside the Twilight Palace and an increasing sense of dread...he complains of feeling 'a yawning chasm between myself and the great mercy of Alemi'...he writes that he plans to ask Lady Fidelia if she would grant permission for building a shrine to Alemi in the morning. Then..." Her voice trails off, and she points to the torn pages of the journal.

Brother Bertram
Wednesday December 14th, 2005 4:02:52 AM

"Then he woke up in the morning with his throat cut no doubt.. We are in great peril my friends."

Falin
Wednesday December 14th, 2005 4:30:14 AM

"That sounds about right Bertram. We will need to keep our wits about us and rely on one another for support while we are here. Not let anyone try to drive a wedge between us."
