DM George Sunday November 27th, 2005 8:35:18 PM
The merchant/mage sees the gate open up and says, "You will need to move through now. I am sorry but I know nothing about any orphans coming through. You need to ask the officials on the other side of the gate."
Angus as leader, has accepted the two new recruits for now, though Xenia will keep on eye on them and the moral direction of the Crimson Shields. Angus leads the way to the gate and is the first one through. As all of the Crimson Shields, old and new step through, it feels like thousands of bugs are all over your body. As you come through the other side, you see many anxious faces staring at you. Many belong to guardsmen who have spears and crossbows leveled at you. Some belong to a long merchant string preparing to go through the other side.
A women in leather armor which just hugs her ample cleavage seems relaxed until Lang steps through the gate. She snaps her fingers and many of the crossbows are suddenly aimed at the large bugbear. She walks up with a questioning look in here eye. "Who is in charge here? My name is Captain Shadowspear and I am in charge of this watch of the gate. Who speaks for you?"
Belkior Sunday November 27th, 2005 8:50:36 PM
The halfling cleric listens to the debate swirling around him. When Wynn suggests going to the Temple of Alemi, Belkior nods in agreement.
"I can't, but one of the more senior clerics at the temple may be able to cast a scrying spell or even something powerful."
Belkior nods as Xenia, Angus and the newcomer make points in their three-sided debate. "Ashlan, the Shields are not 'heroes for hire' or anything like that. In the short time that I've been with the Shields we haven't received much more than enough money to cover our expenses. Sure, we've found some items and coin but not much. So you're looking to the wrong people if you're thinking of striking it rich with us."
"As for revenge ... that's partly what has brought to where we are. A circle of revenge between the Shields and the Anvil Hearts. And, in my opinion, we're poorer for it."
"I've said my piece ... are we all going to ensure that the orphans are cared for in Plateau City? Or continuing to attempt finding Prionel and try to calm the Forest?"
Wynn Sunday November 27th, 2005 10:19:22 PM
The bard steps through the gate, hand in hand with Xenia. On arriving at the other side he gives the rogue's hand a reassuring squeeze before addressing the captain of the gate watch.
"I will speak for him" Wynn's voice rings out clearly as he addresses the gathered throng. "This is Lang, honored member of the Crimson Shields of Hope and friend to myself and those with me. An unfortunate encounter with a powerful artifact has transformed him into the bugbear you see before you, but mark my words he is no threat to you unless you yourself be evil."
Xenia (HP 41/42) Sunday November 27th, 2005 11:08:35 PM
Xenia gives a little squeeze back, and releases Wynn's hand as he steps forward to speak up for Lang.
"You know, Lang," she whispers as she pets Sunshine on the head, "Wynn's got this hat that lets you disguise yourself. Maybe you oughta get yourself one, huh? I mean, you wouldn't need to make yourself look human, like your old self. I mean, just the littlest things make folks think twice. A change of hair color. Bring the ears down just a bit. Make the clothes more, like, human, you know."
"Works for me. I don't get the Hey-Your-a-Drow look hardly ever anymore." Xenia eyes the Captain Woman's cleavage effect. "I'm thinking of getting one of those hats too."
Syr Sunday November 27th, 2005 11:17:19 PM
Syr looks at Xenia and sighs sadly. He gives Angus a quick wink much the way he used to give Florin and wonders if her 'questions' are going to make another leader quit the group.
Shrugging his shoulders he comments to Famina with a grin, "I, for one, wish we were more money oriented. We've had to solicit funds on more than one occasion to help the kids. there has to be some sort of balance that would make life easier. I've been around the longest and am probably the poorest of the group."
As he steps through the gate, he slides in front of Lang when Wynn speaks up to defend him.
Famina Monday November 28th, 2005 12:35:09 AM
The tall woman chuckles at Syr's words, echoing the sentiment felt by many in the group. She has been quiet, listening to them, and looks pensive now. Actually, looking pensive isn't exactly her best look. Being lost in thought looks rather dazed for the blonde woman, which in turn pulls upon other stereotypes. She ponders saying something, but at this moment they're being addressed by the captain. And it would hardly be good for the newcomer to ask questions or make discussion right when they're obviously needing to look united.
Still, someone has to respond, and nobody else has so far, so the barbarian myrmidon steps forward to face the Captain. Cleavage and tight-clothing all over the place. She nods gracefully. "A pleasure to meet you, Captain Shadowspear. These---we---are the Crimson Shields. Our leader is this little one, a powerful priest of Alemi," she announces, hoping she makes a good introduction. And knowing that though she got the halfling's occupation right, she can't remember his name off the top of her head. Balthazar? Something like that. "The bugbear is not a danger, I assure you."
Belkior Monday November 28th, 2005 7:41:10 AM
The halfling cleric spent too much time deliberating and was caught up in the general rush through the portal.
When Belkior arrives on the other side he sees all of the spears and other weapons pointed at the party. Instinctively, he brings his buckler up into a defensive position. The words of the human woman relax his guard a little.
Belkior is about to reply to the Guard Captain's question when Famina speaks before him. The Healer decides to keep going even though he doesn't completely agree with her words.
"Captain Shadowspear ... as my companion just stated, we call ourselves the Crimson Shields. I am Belkior Orvisson, Healer of Alemi and, for the time being, speaker for the group."
"As you know, we have just come through from the Floating City. During the recent events resulting from the awakening of the Fae King, my companions and I were affected by some corrupted druidic magic," and Belkior gestures to his legs. "We assure you, our companion Lang simply wears the form of a bugbear."
After he speaks, Belkior looks over to Angus with some apprehension. "We have to get the leadership decided ... but now isn't the time or place," Belkior thinks.
Angus Monday November 28th, 2005 9:31:07 AM
Angus is relieved when the group finally goes through the gate and is exilerated by the strange feeling of the teleportation.
Once in Plateau City, Angus gets his bearing and he approaches and then speaks to the Captain of the Guard. "Greetings. As my friend Wynn has said, Lang is of no worry. Lang was at the wrong end of some druid magic in this whole nature gone wild situation. I trust nature is more calm here. We are the Crimson Shields and we recently sent through about 50 orphans for their own saftey. We are here to check on them and make sure they are cared for. Can you point us in the right direction. By the way the kids just love playing with their big furry bugbear, they think of him as a teddy bear."
Angus moves to go pass the guards.
DM George Monday November 28th, 2005 5:14:48 PM
Captain Shadowspear holds up her hand signaling for Angus to hold in place. She makes a signal to one of her men who steps forward and casts a spell. He seems to be staring at all of the Crimson Shields and then looks to his leader and says, "Captain, I don't see any evil on them. If it is truly a bugbear, then his very different than any others I have ever met. I think we should let them pass." He steps back.
Captain Shadowspear walks over to a desk and scribbles something quickly on a parchment. She drips some wax on it and stamps her signet ring down into the wax. She then walks up to Lang and hands him the parchment while giving him a good looking over. "Here take this. It will prove that you are legally in the city. Still I fear you might experience some fear and prejudice from the common man. Your size alone will keep most away from you. I suggest you keep your temper or you will find yourself in one of our jails. Consider yourself warned."
She steps back and says admiringly, "Still if you were a fighting man before, this new form must make you only better at it. Such bulging arms. I pity you your looks but envy your power. Walk in wisdom."
She turns back to the others and says with a grin, "Now on to the unpleasant part. To use the Plateau City gate requires the payment of a toll. 5 gold pieces each please."
Xenia (HP 41/42) Monday November 28th, 2005 9:34:57 PM
Five gold. Alright. Good enough. Better than the Ten gold she paid to get to Floating City in the first place.
And maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to just stay here on this side. Permanent like. She looks about at the group. How it's changed. And not for the better. Syr looks grumpier than ever. And now he wants to make money! How come no one every said anything about that before?
And things aren't any better. Two creepy new people. The rogue shakes her head. She pays the toll in silence.
Wynn Brightsong Monday November 28th, 2005 10:20:29 PM
Wynn pays the 5 gold pieces to the gatekeeper and follows Xenia. He pulls her aside when there is a quiet moment. "Xenia, I agree with you fully" the bard speaks in a quiet voice. "Although a little walking around money is nothing to sneer at, I did not join The Crimson Shields for money. I stay because of a life pledge to the Clan Corrigan without whom I would have surely perished. Nor am I interested in exacting revenge on those who do so for money or for the love of it. If this death monger puts the Shields or their reputation in danger from his actions I will force his departure, at the end of a blade if necessary."
Not knowing what else to say to calm the rogue, he pulls her body close to his and kisses her on the lips.
Lang (ac 22; hp 56/67) & Sunshine (ac 22; hp 47/47) d20+12=29 Monday November 28th, 2005 11:59:22 PM
Lang accepts the paper from the guardswoman without speaking. He folds it carefully and puts it into his pouchbelt.
While in his pouchbelt he extracts the 5 goldpiece toll and hands it over.
Lang moves away from the gate and takes a deep breath, trying to catch the scent of either Florin or his daughter.
Track by scent 29.

Belkior Tuesday November 29th, 2005 7:21:09 AM
The halfling cleric fishes in his moneypouch for the required toll. Once Belkior finds the five golden coins, he passes them over.
Stepping further from the teleportal, Belkior looks about trying to recognize what part of Plateau CIty the party is now in. It's been many years since he studied at the great Temple of Light here in Plateau City but he should be able to recognize something.
He is concerned about what he does see. Everywhere there are signs of flooding and damage. He points this out to his companions.
"Xenia, Wynn ... look around. It looks like Plateau City suffered through the rise of the Fae King, too."
Angus Tuesday November 29th, 2005 8:50:51 AM
Angus is getting annoyed as no one is ansering his questions. Angus fishes out the toll and hold it out, but does not give it as he asks his question a second time. "I asked you if you know the location of the 50 or so orphans that came through the gate yesterday. They are our charges and we come to check on them. Also, do you know the wereabouts of the nearest catacombs shop?" Angus will give the toll after receiveing any sort of answer, being ignored is so rude and this is the second city that it is happening.
Xenia (2nd Illegal Post) Tuesday November 29th, 2005 11:17:00 AM
Like a sail filled by a rising breeze, Xenia's body cleaves to Wynn's. Her slim arms go up around his neck, and her lips move to the dance of his. "I love you," they whisper and coo. "I love you, Wynn."
"Hmm? Huh? Suffer? That's nice."
"I mean, what? Huh? Oh yeah. Sure, Belkie. Um, yeah. I guess lots of places probably got hit. But least they still got buildings standing here. Sounds like the kids found a nice enough place. But we'll see when we get there."
Her hand slips into Wynn's as they wander out into the city.
Famina Tuesday November 29th, 2005 12:44:38 PM
Famina glances at the companions. They seem to feel some sort of resentment towards her and the mercenary fellow. No matter. Once they see her in action, they will trust her! After handing over the five gold, the tall woman looks concernedly about the city. "It looks like the city could be cleaned up a little. Do you need any aid for the security of this area?"
DM George Tuesday November 29th, 2005 3:04:03 PM
OOC This isn't the official post, but thought I would keep things moving along with poor ignored Angus.
The Captain hears Angus's complaint and smiles. "I am sorry but we don't often get a bugbear through the gate. It distracted me. Yes your orphans came through yesterday. All I know is that they were under the care of the Von Ottens. They are a powerful merchant family. Not sure where they went from here but I would try his offices in the merchant quarter."
Shadowspear then collects her toll from the touchy sorceror and shows him the door.
Angus Tuesday November 29th, 2005 3:30:16 PM
Angus bows deeply to the captain of the guard and replys "Thank you. You have been most helpful. We will go see our charges. Good Luck and have a great day." Angus finishes with his most charming smile.
Angus looks to his group "Well people lets go find this merchant family that was so kind to take in the orphans and thank them properly." Angus strides off in the direction that the guard had indicated.
Syr Tuesday November 29th, 2005 6:34:11 PM
Syr thinks back to yesterday, "hmmm Von Ottens? Was that the name of that the merchant that I saved outside the Ghost..." Pausing for a moment in reflection, "No it was Dadun Polix, right? Any idea who these Von Ottens are?"
The elf follows the rest through the gate giving up 5 gold pieces.
Ashlan Sinclair Tuesday November 29th, 2005 6:35:41 PM
Ashlan moves up to the captain lady and slowly pulls out 5gold piece and hands it over, "Well, done deal and good day ma'am."
With that said Ashlan walks out with Angus and steps up beside the man, "I plan to work with you as long as we can get along. I believe your name was Angus, it will be nice to have some traveling companions." Ashlan falls back now away from the group as a whole but follows near enough to be at hand if needed. He already sees how he for sure stands as a outcast and will just keep his distance till they warm up or the red head tries putting him on a spit.
DM George Tuesday November 29th, 2005 10:14:20 PM
The group leaves the warehouse and stops in wonder as they see the bustling city around them. It is quickly apparant that the Plateau City didn't suffer nearly as much damage as the Floating City during natures misadventures. The walk out of the warehouse doors and enter a bustling market selling all kinds of goods, from food and clothing to weapons and more exotic items. As you wander, most people seem to be staying away from your group. Your not sure it is because you look highly competent in your armor and weapons or because you are walking around with a rather large bugbear. Still when you enter a booth, most of the other customers leave rather quickly.
In your wanderings, you stumble upon an entrance to the catacombs, that famous magical store. This could be a good time to get any shopping done. If you have the desire, then we will say you took some time there now.
After dozens of street hawkers try to sell you meat on a stick, or fried rice and fish, or some kind of flavored ice imported from far away mountains you realize that you are hungry. Also you really don't know where your going. You might have to get directions from someone.
OOC this would be a good time to tell me if you have a background at the Plateau City. Could help get around
Wynn d20+8=28 Wednesday November 30th, 2005 12:17:16 AM
Wynn frowns a little as he studies the busy market.
Von Ottens...Von Ottens he wonders trying to remember if his father or mother had ever mentioned the name, or if he had ever seen that name in the ledgers kept by his family. The Brightsongs had, after all, had trade connections throughout the Elennian penninsula...when they were in business. (Bardic Knowledge=28, nat. 20)

Angus looks to Ashlan and comments "We normally only look for folks that plan to stick around. I suggest you find a way to earn Xenia's trust. Xenia is not going any where and is a valued member of our team."
Angus looks to a storekeeper. "Good man, I am new to this fair city, can you point me in the direction of the Von Otten merchants. We have business with them this fair day." (Diplomancy 17 & gather info 22))
Belkior Wednesday November 30th, 2005 7:38:29 AM
The halfling cleric looks around at the cityscape, marvelling at how it had changed since his time here as a student. Belkior had spent virtually all of his time in the classrooms, study halls and hospital of the Temple of Light so the Von Otten name means nothing to him.
When the vendors offer "meat on a stick" to his companions, Belkior quietly coughs and gets the attention of his nearest companion. In what he hopes is a whisper, Belkior cautions his companion, "It surely is meat, but don't buy from any but the cleanest vendor ... in the poorer parts of town, the vendors are rumored to use "roof rabbit" ... or worse."
When they pass the Catacombs, Belkior feels his purse for a moment. Then he looks longingly at the shadowed doorway.
Still, the Healer is listening when Angus asks a storekeeper about the Von Otten family.
OOC - Belkior spent time in Plateau City as a student (passing mention in character history). As written, he didn't get out much.
Xenia (HP 41/42) d20+3=17 d20+18=35 Wednesday November 30th, 2005 8:16:47 AM
With her arm through Wynn's, Xenia runs her eye over the many stalls of food vendors. Fresh fruit would be good. Strawberries. Or grapes.
In her mind, she tries to call back the layout of the city. What can you remember when you just pass through on your way from Dirt City to Floating City? Merchant Quarter from the Teleport Pad? Merchant Quarter? Merchant Quarter?
Rolls and Actions Knowledge Local 17 (For directions from Teleport Pad to Merchant Quarter) Spot 35 (For a decent place to eat. Preferably with fruit.)
Syr Wednesday November 30th, 2005 5:11:15 PM
After stepping through the portal, "Hey Angus, you'd think the folks that saved Floating City from the vines would get some sort of discount on the Portal... Or maybe even some sort of lodging arrangement for free? With our old apartments gone, are we planning on making this our new home or returning to the disaster area later?"
Moving over to Famina he asks, "I've never traveled much. Have you been to Plateau City? What's better about this place rather than the Big Float?"
Syr is taking in the new sights and looks around with interest. Commenting as they pass by, "Oh, the Catacombs. Xenia's mentioned that before but I've never made a purchase there. Hold on a sec while I duck in."
Lang (ac 22; hp 56/67) & Sunshine (ac 22; hp 47/47) Wednesday November 30th, 2005 10:55:52 PM

"Perhaps they have a map of the city for sale in here."
OOC - No knowledge of Plateau City.

DM George Wednesday November 30th, 2005 11:04:40 PM
The group puts their heads together and compares knowledge. The pooled knowledge is that the Von Ottens are a very well know merchant family. One of the richest in the city. They have multiple interests, farming, lumber, dry goods, inns, brothels, almost anything that money could be made at they have some kind of finger into.
When Angus asks for directions, the man he asks just smiles and points at several different stores and moves on.
Xenia does notice that the produce is plentiful and looks exceptionally good. Almost like the harvests lately have been extremely large. She is able to buy grapes for only a couple of copper pieces and they are delicious.
Angus Thursday December 1st, 2005 10:06:07 AM
Angus thinks about the tid bits of information the group has gleaned and announces. "Since several of the stores are owned and operated by the Von Ottens, lets split up in twos and go ask for infomation. I will take Ashlan, Lang you go with Famina, Xenia and Wynn, Sry and Belikor. Lets get to know one another better on the way." Angus is specifically looking at Ashlan and Famina. "Lets meet back here in 15 minutes and compare note. The sooner we find the kids the sooner we can go shopping at the Catacombs or elsewhere."
Angus is somewhat concerned about the breath of business that the Von Ottons have, brothels, interesting, on many levels, Angus thinks to himself.
Xenia (HP 41/42) Thursday December 1st, 2005 11:26:54 AM
Xenia peels the skin from one of the amazingly large grapes and holds it up for Wynn.
"Yeah, sure, Angus. That sounds good," she agrees without really hearing what he's saying.
Belkior d20+2=5 d20+1=10 d20+5=20 d20+3=16 Thursday December 1st, 2005 11:42:57 AM
The halfling cleric moves to stand beside Syr. Looking up, Belkior asks the elven monk about where the two should go.
"Syr, hope that you don't mind, but why not go look over in that store there. I think, from the sign, that it sells clothing of some sort."
As the two start walking across the street, Belkior looks cautiously both ways. One of the problems about being a halfling in a large city is that big people always seem to overlook you which is bad enough when they're walking but dangerous when they're riding horses or driving carts.
"Uhh, Syr ... maybe we should just ask where the Von Ottens live, shouldn't we? I mean, what are the chances that the children will be working in their stores?"
Once they pass the portal of the store, Belkior keeps his hands at his side. Another problem of big cities is that people keep thinking that halflings mean trouble ... especially in stores.
When a clerk comes close, Belkior will ask, "Excuse me, we've just come in from out of town. We have business with the Von Otten family. Is this one of their stores?" Regardless of the response, Belkior will continue, "Can you tell me where the Von Otten's business office is? I understand that it is here in the Merchant Quarter."

Famina Thursday December 1st, 2005 1:23:13 PM
Famina smiles as the friendly elf asks her about the area. "I did come through here, this gate. I did not quite stay in this area long, long enough to find that it was quite civilized compared to the city that lay beyond those mysterious gates..." She stops, looking back at the arches of power. "Imagine, no one knows where they lead, and the land beyond is filled with mysteries... We will return, I am sure. "But anyways, look!" she stops a vendor and purchases some food. Each person in the party receives one. Well-cooked, reddish-brown meats, with soft, oily vegetables like onions, wrapped in crunchy, almost-burnt bread. Also included is little cups of strange, reddish cream. "You dip these in this sauce." (Tastes a lot like bbq-ketchup sauce) "A food native to my area... and now that the war with the giants is over, trade picked up with them, I guess. The meats are a bit expensive, compared to your cow-meats or bird-meats, but I suppose it's hard to get elk out here. Still, I'm glad to see it...first sign of home I've seen since I left it a few months ago." She looks quite pleased, then she stops and looks to Syr. "I'm sorry, where was I? Oh, yes *crunch, chew, chew* The area, well, *swallow* I know the priest of Alemi, what was his name again?" She looks apologetically to him, "Umm, might like the little temple of Alemi in the poor area of town. The Dragon Quarter is the place you guys might be interested. Lots of other fighters, *Huge bite!, followed by chewing, chewing, chewing,* mmmm, and mat ace, um, Catacombs *chew, chew, swallow*. There's a large mage school, which looked really fascinating. I spent most of my time, which was only about three days or so, there. Long enough to get many invitations to join groups, but for jobs that sounded... strange."
Ashlan Sinclair d20+2=22 Thursday December 1st, 2005 7:17:39 PM
Ashlan stays back while the group tries to figure out how to get where they need to go. Knowledge or not of the city he doubts his input would be looked at as useful so he decides to just stay quiet.
Ashlan taps the hilt of his longsword as he thinks to himself mainly and hopes for atleast a fight sometime soon so he can atleast have some fun and maybe show he is of use for something to this group. He glances about again as he thinks and tries keep his eyes open for anything out of place. (spot:22 *nat 20*)
Syr d20+16=33 Thursday December 1st, 2005 8:55:33 PM
The elf takes the meat and digs right in beside Famina. Ignoring the fact that she seems to be chewing and talking at the same time he swallows his before continuing, "I take it you are a mage? Do you have a big book? Do you have a cat or toad or something? Angus over there makes it look so easy and he never seems to study. But lightning just comes flying from his hands."
The elf follows Belkior with spirits improving, "Sure thing 'hop-a-long'. Someone must know these people."
After watching Belkior stumble through some questions he puts on his winningest smile and asks the shopkeeper, "Excuse me, what my friend means to say is that we were looking for some orphaned children that are very close to us and have heard the Von Ottens were kind enough to take them in. Can you please point the way to their main residence or business?" (Diplomacy 33). Assuming the shopkeeper knows, "While we are here can you tell us a bit more about the family, we are new in town."
DM George Thursday December 1st, 2005 10:49:38 PM
The group splits up to gather more information. Several only seem to gather food, but they come back extremely satisfied but with the beginnings of some intigestion.
Belkior questions a shopkeeper whose eyebrows rise when he sees the halfling's legs. "Ah little one...I know where you need to go, but first let me show you this fine jacket. Made with the best wools. Should match your fur very well. I mean your eyes!"
After his slip, they merchant is quick to point out the directions to the Von Otten's headquarters. You want to see a dwarf named Ashbeard. He is one of Von Otten's factors. He should be able to help you."
Xenia (HP 41/42) Friday December 2nd, 2005 11:05:09 AM
Just out shopping with Wynn puts a sparkle in the eye of the dark girl rogue. Not even shopping for anything special either. Just looking. Looking at stupid stuff, and laughing.
It almost pushes everything away. Almost clears the spectre of the death and destruction that they left back in Floating City.
Almost.
But there are folks back there. Folks they know. Some might be dead. Some maybe fighting for their lives against plant monsters.
In the end, there is the lingering guilt. Why should she be so lucky? Why her? And shouldn't they be doing something? Anything to help.
Belkior Friday December 2nd, 2005 12:18:15 PM
The halfling cleric looks up at the shopkeeper and at the wool jacket that he is holding. Belkior considers for a moment before responding to the proposal, "I'm sorry, but I prefer not to wear wool. Do you have anything in a tight-woven linen or cotton? Maybe waterproof?"
After dealing with the shopkeeper, Belkior will turn to Syr and head back to the arranged meeting point. "We don't want to be late, Syr. It wouldn't do for Angus to think that we've gone missing or anything."
Syr Friday December 2nd, 2005 4:52:37 PM
Disappointed that his question about the family wasn't answered he still nods thanks to the shopkeeper, "Ashbeard? got it."
He moves easily alongside the halfling looking at crowd reactions to Belkior's unusual gait and trying to compare it to the reaction Lang has received, "What do you think of the two new people? Famina seems quite approachable but that Ashlan guy comes off pretty harsh."
Angus Friday December 2nd, 2005 5:01:15 PM
Angus returns to the meeting spot and waits for the others. Upon finding out where to meet the Von Otten's factor the thin man exclaims. "We are off to see the factor. Lets wait for the others to return and we and find the Von Otten's headquarters and find our charges. Does anyone want to linger at the Catacombs and put in an order from our fund?"

The bard wanders through the market area hand-in-hand with Xenia who remains strangely quiet. He listens to snippets of conversation between the locals and where possible engages in the discussion. Wynn pays special attention to any conversations about the damage to the city, recovery efforts, or the Von Ottens. [Gather Information = 23]
Xenia (2nd Illegal Post) Saturday December 3rd, 2005 11:11:54 AM
Xenia's eyes roam the vendors as she strolls quietly at Wynn's side.
"Wynn?" she asks, her mind lost in a maze of ideas. "You ever thought of starting up business again? I mean, you said your family has a trading company, right? I bet there's lots of opps for merchant trading in Floating City now that everything's been so wrecked. I mean, it's really bad that so many people have been killed. But someone has to, you know, step in and take their place. And if you've got that kinda experience ... I mean, well, I'd be glad to stick by you and help out."
Wynn (Illegal second post) Saturday December 3rd, 2005 5:01:49 PM
Xenia's question brings back uncomfortable memories. Long hours of study at his father's side when he really wanted to be outside with his friends, dinner table lectures about business and respectability and dependability, his fathers dissaproving looks when he did not measure up to his stern demands.
"No Xenia, It is a life I am ill-suited for, I need something more than columns of numbers and contracts. When my father died I returned home to help my dear mother with the company, but under my hand it's fortunes fell and I am afraid any chance it had for surviving was washed away with the shipwreck that stranded me on the shores of the Red Hills. In hindsight I am glad for it's demise for I have never been more alive than I am now, fulfilling Bralin's life quest and living for each day with you by my side."
Wynn gives Xenia a reassuring squeeze before guiding her further through the crowds that fill the market.
Xenia (3rd Illegal Post) Saturday December 3rd, 2005 7:23:59 PM
Xenia just shakes her head in reply. She smiles up at Wynn. No words.
She lays her head against his arm as they walk. "It's alright. Just as long as I'm with you."
DM George Saturday December 3rd, 2005 10:06:35 PM
After a quick conversation, the group meets up and shares the knowledge. Angus leads the group off to find the center of the Von Otten's empire. After much searching and asking of directions, (Xenia did it, for some reason Angus wouldn't)they find themselves in front of an impressive stone building. It is 3 stories high and has many windows.
The group climbs up the stairs and enters the foyer where they see a man sitting behind a desk. He inquires to their needs and they are directed down a long corridor to the office of Ashbeard. When they enter, they are confronted by yet another person sitting at a desk. This time it is an attractive female dwarf. Angus goes through his act once again and the assistant asks them to wait and disappears through a thick oaken door. Several minutes later she reappears and asks the group to wait as Ashland is already with someone.
Fifteen minutes later, a minotaur dressed in armor and sporting several different weapons exits the same oaken door and with a nod to the assistant leaves the room. Ten more long minutes pass by when the door is jerked open. A small and almost skinny dwarf sticks his head out and says, "Come on it."
As the group follows him, they see he is a very unusual dwarf. He is thin shouldered, his beard is trimmed short and he is wearing velvet clothing. He sits behind his desk and looks the group over. "So you are the Crimson Shields. I have read some reports on you. He looks at Famina and Ashlan with a question in his eye. "You two aren't in the report and some others are missing. Did more of you get changed? Still I want to thank you for helping out our man in the Floating City. I am assuming you are looking for those kids of yours. We have them housed in one of our warehouses. They are being taken care of. If you want to see them that can be arranged. I will have a guide bring you to them. After you see them, I would like to discuss a possible solution for their permanant resettlement. A warehouse is no place to raise a child. I have something in mind that might be good for both of us. That conversation can wait until you see them."
He reaches over and rings a bell. The pretty dwarf sticks her head in and Ashbeard says, "Have Steve show them to the warehouse on Crooked Street." He looks at the Shields again and goes on, "I would like to met you for breakfast. There is an inn called the Broken Wagon that is close to the warehouse. Can we met an hour after sunrise tommorrow? Steve can show you were it is. The food is good. I am sorry I can't spend more time today, but I am swamped."
Since this is clearly a dismissal, the assistant starts tugging on Belkiors arm. "Come on sir, I will take you to Steve."
OOC Feel free to go to the Catacombs. Didn't want to lose a player since you are wandering around the city. You would never find each other again.
Famina Sunday December 4th, 2005 1:22:15 AM
"Very well, I will see you at the Broken Wagon this eve," Famina tells the Crimson Shields. She smiles, "I'm afraid I'm not very good with children. And I think while I'm here, I'd like to ask questions and find out if there's any sorts of tasks that adventurers like us would need to do. If any of you would like to join me, please feel free." (Famina wants to go about and get information on any sorts of interesting jobs around town, or weird rumors. I dunno what kinda roll that would be...)
Xenia (HP 41/42) d20+18=26 Sunday December 4th, 2005 9:16:48 AM Dwarf, huh?
"Looks like a gnome ta me," Xenia whispers to Wynn. She eyes the Ashbeard guy from the back of the group. Wee-erd
"That sounds good, Famina," Xenia's tone is overly casual as she replies to the woman who's been following the group around. "Why don't you go to the inn? And wait. Yeah. Wait. Look for a job. I'm sure you'll find something. Good luck. See ya." Xenia smiles and waves.

Angus Sunday December 4th, 2005 10:30:23 AM
Angus takes the opportunity to practice his dwarvish on some new subject, but communicates mostly in common so the rest of the group can understand. ANgus can not help but show off sometimes.
Angus responds to questions "We would love to see the kids as soon as possible and would be honored to eat with you at the Broken Wagon in the morning." Angus then goes on to explain the missing two members and the new probationary members. Angus finishes with other questions "Do you have information on our Friend Florin? We belive he was also coming to see the orphans but took a different route."
After leaving the Von Otten's Angus announces to the group. "Lets go see the kids and find lodging for ourselves and then some shopping."
Lang (ac 22; hp 56/67) & Sunshine (ac 22; hp 47/47) Sunday December 4th, 2005 7:19:53 PM
Lang remains silent and in the background at the meeting with the dwarf.
"Yes, Let's go check on the children."

Belkior d20+3=11 Monday December 5th, 2005 8:08:21 AM
The halfling cleric allows the assistant to lead him away. Despite her obviosu features, the she-dwarf is apparently strong as well.
Once he is in the anteroom, Belkior asks the assistant, "Ashbeard mentioned an agent in Floating City that we assisted. Do you know what happened to him?"
As the party heads towards the mysterious Steve who is to guide them to the warehouse, Belkior will move beside Xenia and Wynn. He will whisper to the two of them, "Umm ... didn't the merchant that we helped to the teleportal, and who came through with them, didn't he say that his boss was Piska Tallif? That doesn't sound anything like this Ashbeard fellow, or the von Ottens, does it?"
Angus ( Second Illegal post) Monday December 5th, 2005 5:07:50 PM
Angus smiles at Belkior "Remember the merchant we saved from the plants. Apparrently he was well connected."
Angus moves over to Lang. "Once we get the shopping done and the kids investigated, I will need you to test our two new associates to determine their fighting prowess. I need to decide how to arrange the group and I think a demonstration of their abilities is in order. Please try not to kill them, but test them well. I leave the method up to you as it may be a way to test the limits of your new hopefully temperary form as well." Angus pats Lang on his broad back and moves on.
Syr Monday December 5th, 2005 9:21:51 PM
Syr whispers to Angus after they leave, "Which merchant did we help? Does he mean Dadun Polix?
DM George Monday December 5th, 2005 11:24:09 PM
The Crimson Shields leave the building following the quick moving aide. He points to a jovial looking fellow who looks to enjoy a good meal more often than good for him. "That is Steve, your guide." He turns to Belkior and glances around. He whispers, "Don't tell anyone I told you but you didn't save just any associate. You saved a family member. They often travel in disquise. Jealous rivals you know. Still the family only trusts the family for certain tasks. The aide's expression sours at that and he quickly turns and walks back into the inn.
Steve has a large smile on face as he sees the group come towards him. It falters for a minute when he sees Lang and turns quizzical when he notices Belkior's legs. "Hi I am Steve. I am to take you to the warehouse where the kids are being housed." He moves off in a ambling fashion saying hello to many, giving smiles to others. He points out restaurants and taverns along the way having opinions both good and bad on each. He points to another Inn and jabs Wynn in the side. "The girls are really friendly in there. You should check it out if your pocketbook can stand the cost."
Eventually they arrive at a small warehouse in a business district. Many small shops line the streets and a small neighborhodd market is down the street. Sounds of laughter can be heard from inside. As the group enters, many heads turn and then screams of delight are sounded. The Shields are buried in smiling happy faces and each one is grabbed and hugged by multiple children.
Xenia (HP 41/42) Tuesday December 6th, 2005 11:29:54 AM
Leaving the building with Wynn and Belkior, Xenia ponders the mystery of the rescued merchant, while keeping an eye on Famina Leather Woman. She gonna leave like she said or what? Then the aide guy provides the answer.
"There you go, Belkie, the merchant guy was on some sort of secret mission. So, you know, he gives fake names and stuff. Makes you wonder, though, doesn't it? What he was there for. And what kinda politics is on the other side of that attitude." The rogue hooks a thumb at the aide, returning into the inn. "Reminds me of the House of Cloaks back home."
On the way, Xenia gives the Steve guy a slit-eyed sideways look, but says nothing. Instead, she turns her gaze to Wynn's face, trying to see it with different eyes. Why did the Steve guy pick Wynn to point the whorehouse out to? Why Wynn? Does he look like the kind of guy who would go to those kind of places? Is that the way other people see him?
The girl rogue shakes her head. Her eyes just won't see Wynn that way. They just won't.
All the hard thoughts wash away when the group enters the warehouse. Xenia picks Kyria's blond head out in the crowd, and the only thought left to her is that she didn't stop somewhere to buy candy.
Belkior d20+18=25 Tuesday December 6th, 2005 11:35:40 AM
The halfling cleric tries to remain upright as the crowd of children run to meet the Shields.
"Hey! Hey! Careful with the halfling, I'm not much bigger than you."
Once he is back on his feet, Belkior looks for the group of children that he had been coaching bback in the Ghost. When he sees one of them, he asks, "Did everyone make it through? Did any of you get hurt?"
Looking over the group, Belkiro tries to do a quick head count and judge the condition of the children. Heal = 25, for diagnosis
"Have you been eating regularly? What about exercise, have you been outside to play?"
Belkior tries to disguise his joy and relief in finding the children behind a dispassionate "healer face" but isn't very successful.
Angus d20+9=19 Tuesday December 6th, 2005 1:01:04 PM
Angus takes in all of the site seeing with their tour guide Steve, but is releived when they reach the warehouse and see the kids. Angus passes out his 10 pounds of chocolate and starts to play his flute for the kids (perform 19).
Angus looks to Steve. "Do you know how long the kids can stay here as we have to find them long term lodging. Have the Von Otten's any ideas or suggestions on where we can house the kids?"
Angus calls lang, Ashlan and Famina over after the greeting. "We need to find out the capabilities of you two. I have asked Lang to put you through the paces. We need to know if we can rely on you in a scrap and how to use you to the best of your abilities. Please not permanent damage Lang. Oh and you may want to see if they can use a bow too."
Xenia (HP 41/42) Tuesday December 6th, 2005 3:39:22 PM
Xenia steals a piece of chocolate as well. With a big grin, she feeds a chunk to Wynn, and then shares some off to Kyria.
Then, after the initial rush and greeting, Xenia looks up and around, searching the spacious floor of the warehouse for Kay.
mikey Tuesday December 6th, 2005 4:38:26 PM

Ashlan Sinclair Tuesday December 6th, 2005 5:09:13 PM
Ashlan looks over to Angus and shrugs as he nods, "As you wish of course I prefer real combat if you understand. Not meaning i want to really fight any of you, just I don't want to have to hold my punches in worry I might hurt someone."
Ashlan looks to the kids and keeps his distance since he figures he'll get as nice of a reaction from them as he has otherwise. He sighs and stretches as he wonders about all this so far.
Xenia (3rd Illegal Post) Tuesday December 6th, 2005 5:31:44 PM
Xenia continues to search the room for Kay.
"Say, Steve? Was there a woman by the name of Kay with the children? I woulda 'spected she'd be here."
"Gather round, Kids," the dark rogue calls. "We're gonna watch Uncle Lang fight. Form a big circle. Give 'em enough room, 'kay?" The rogue begins forming the children into a loose arena. "Remember, this could be kinda dangerous. So you guys who don't think you can dodge out of the way, you better find a seat back aways."
Syr Tuesday December 6th, 2005 6:47:14 PM
Seeing the children, Syr dives right into a ball of boys, wrestling playfully with them for a few minutes. Then hearing f the fight, he joins he others in he circle forming and watches with interest. In particular, he examines the newcomer's equipment looking for anything out of the ordinary.
Wynn d20+6=17 Tuesday December 6th, 2005 7:22:32 PM
Wynn is glad to reach the warehouse and find the orphans well looked after. Wynn finds a quiet spot along one wall and watches Xenia and the others greet the children. When the sparring match between the newcomers and Lang begins he watches with some interest. Not sure that one day soon he will not have to face the follower of Jancassis in battle, he pays close attention to Ashlan trying to detect any particular strengths or weaknesses. [Spot=17].
Given the chance he will approach Angus and voice his growing suspicions about the Von Ottens. "I am worried that this family controls so much of the commerce in the area, and that they see fit to travel incognito to other cities. Are they not well liked?"
Lang (ac 22; hp 56/67) & Sunshine (ac 22; hp 47/47) d20=9 d20+13=31 d20+13=25 d20+8=14 d20+8=9 d6+6=12 d6+6=7 Tuesday December 6th, 2005 7:53:53 PM
Angus's request to fight the new comers takes him a little bit by surprise. He looks over at Famina and Ashlan to gauge their reaction.
Seeing a luke warm, but not negative response from Ashlan, Lang turns to Angus and says, "Ok Angus I will test them."
"And I will try not to seriously hurt them," Lang says with a big, toothy grin hoping to ease some of the tension."
Lang takes off his cloak, backpack and other gear, getting down to just his armor and shortswords. He commands Sunshine to sit near some of the children. He then moves over to Ashlan.
Lang looks over Ashlan to make sure he is not hurt to bad.

DM George "testing" Tuesday December 6th, 2005 8:51:13 PM
The group revels in finding the children in good health, well fed, safe, and happy. Kay, Ensign Buckle, the young officer, and the sargent come into the larger room with big smiles on their faces. Kay runs up to Xenia and grabs her by the shoulders. "I am so happy to see that your all safe. What word do you have from the Floating City? Is it still under attack?"
After the initial greetings, Lang, at Angus's prompting, decides to test the newest recruits to the Crimson Shields. He takes on Ashlan first and finds the mercanary a tricky and competent opponent. He fights with two weapons and has uncommon skill with both. Lang quickly realizes that Ashlan would be a tough foe and could be a valuable figher for the group.
Next he tests the woman Famina. She is very quick and strong. She leaps in and slashes with her sword and leaps out even before Lang can do anything. Her mouth is set in grim determination, trying to keep hold of her emotions. She is trying to keep her temper and does. The large bugbear also enjoys his new found strength and power. He quickly realizes that both of these two will be good additions to the group. Both are capable, but are they loyal and trustworthy. Can you trust them with your lives. Only time will tell.
The trio are winded after this mock combat but feel good. Almost like a tension has been released. Only after a few minutes does anyone notice, "Where is Florin? Where is Jella? Neither of them are here.
OOC sorry to push through this combat but if allowed to play out, it could have taken several real life days. No worries, you will be testing the two newcomers in a real battle soon enough
Xenia (HP 41/42) Tuesday December 6th, 2005 10:27:03 PM "Kay!" Xenia shrieks. She jumps up and down and hugs the woman. "We were worried about you."
"Floating City's coming back," the rogue says with excitement. "We released the city from these big vine things that were tipping it. And now I think the city's moving again. It's floating out away from the shore."
She quiets when the competitions begin, watching intently.
"Oh. Kay," Xenia whispers to Kay while steel rings in the air. "We heard that little Jella took sick. Florin teleported here to be with her. Do you know where they are? I ... I heard it might have been the green spore thing."
Wynn Wednesday December 7th, 2005 7:48:12 AM
The bard makes a mental note of Ashalan's ability to fight with both weapons, and the agility of Famina. While things are relatively quiet he takes the opportunity to jot down his thoughts in his journal.
Angus Wednesday December 7th, 2005 8:30:48 AM
Angus is pleased that the mock combat went well and thinks to himseld, just the start of the group bonding process. Angus goes over to the three combatants. "Nice job all of you. It looks like you will not die in the first scrap we get in, and they seem to follow us around lately. Do any of you have missile fire capabilities of any skill? It is always good to hit the enemy first if you must at all." Angus slaps all three on their sweaty backs and give a final nod and smile of approval and moves off toward the kids, looking for Steve.
"Steve there are two missing. Florin, one of the Crimson shields and his daughter Jella, do you know where they are?" Angus asks with concern.
Belkior Wednesday December 7th, 2005 9:01:05 AM
After spending time with Wally and Frado and the other children he had looked after, the halfling cleric also notices that their former companion is nowhere to be seen. When Angus asks about Florin, Belkior will move over to stand near him.
"Yes, we had received a message that Jella was affected by some kind of unusual disease. So Florin came here to check on her and provide what assistance he could."
Ashlan Sinclair Wednesday December 7th, 2005 8:13:03 PM
After the test fight with Lang Ashlan moves to the side and wipes his face with his hand once before picking up his cloak and putting it back on himself. Afterwards he brushes his normal looking black and silver tunic off which Lang in the small test should of found to be much more solid then any normal clothing and any blows landed would of probably let off a metallic sound instead of cloth being cut.
Syr Wednesday December 7th, 2005 9:47:04 PM
The elf sits amoung the children and cheers along the combatants with everyone else. Standing after it is over, he congratulates Wynn and eyes the two newcomers speculatively.
DM George Wednesday December 7th, 2005 9:48:23 PM
Several questions are posed to Steve about Florin and Jella but he sort of has a confused look on his face and answers, "I never met either one of them. I was just told to bring you here. I don't know anything else. I gotta get back to work." Steve waves at the kids and looks at Angus, "Oh yeah, I will met you here in the morning to bring you to breakfast." The happy but somewhat dim fellow leaves the warehouse.
Kay speaks up, "Jella was sick and Florin showed up the yesterday and took her away to find healing. He said he was bringing her back to the Floating City. Why I don't know. I don't think I ever want to go back." She looks at the two soldiers and gives Ensign Buckle a shy smile, "Should we get back to the kitchen and finish preparing dinner?" She looks at Xenia and says, "These kids turn into monsters when they get hungry. Are you staying? There is plenty. The Von Ottens have been very genereous. You are staying the night right? Maybe I will be able to get some sleep." She shoots another glance at the young officer.
OOC Nothing special is going to happen tonight. You can roleplay yourselves silly or do what you wish until morning. George
Lang (ac 22; hp 56/67) & Sunshine (ac 22; hp 47/47) Wednesday December 7th, 2005 11:34:37 PM
"Well I do not know about you guys, but I am exhausted. I need to get some sleep. Wake me up if we are taking watches."
After a quick bite to eat, Lang and Sunshine find a quiet area and get some sack time.

Wynn Thursday December 8th, 2005 7:53:16 AM
The bard closes his journal and slips it into his pack. He finds a comfortable spot to rest and beckons Xenia to join him. As children and adventurers alike settle in for the night his voice rides the gentle currents of air that arrive through the open windows.
In the dark green woods, when the sun was high I saw a lady riding by She had flashing eyes and golden hair She rode upon a dappled mare
In the dark green woods, by the last bird's call There came a soldier straight and tall He found his true love waiting there And he kissed her eyes and her golden hair
In the dark green woods, by the evening star I saw a soldier ride to war He never would return again For in some battle, he was slain
Xenia (HP 41/42) Thursday December 8th, 2005 10:36:27 AM
Xenia snuggles in next to Wynn.
hehe "Did you see them?" she says quietly under the strains of his song. She nods in the direction in which Kay had departed with the two soldiers. "Looks like a nice enough guy, that Buckle guy. Bet they get together." The rogue lays a hand on the bard's chest and her head in the crook of his arm.
"Hope Jella's alright," Xenia murmurs into Wynn's chest. "And Florin." Shifting position a bit, she reaches up and removes the ring, the ring with the crimson gem cut in the shape of a shield and embossed with the white dove. Just doesn't feel right to wear it now. Not with him gone.
Tucked comfortably in the warmth of Wynn's arm, Xenia looks the ring over carefully, seeking not only its physical attributes, but the symbols that it stands for as well. Then she tucks it into her pouch, tucks it way for a time in which it may regain its meaning.
At the signal that dinner is ready, she pops up and hops to help serve out the food. Moving amongst the orphans, the Shields, and the others, a steaming plate in either hand, the rogue finds time to pick out a few choice morsels and lay them before Wynn.
Famina Thursday December 8th, 2005 11:12:23 AM
The fighting is fun, and Famina enjoys darting back and forth. Still, it's not as exhilarating as a real battle is. And her manner of fighting is hardly like the others; instead of practiced motions or feints, she merely jumps in and slahses with full strength, then moves out, depending on her body's natural talents to defeat her opponents. Which, in her case, isn't perhaps that bad. She is very careful to not use her impressive lion shield, putting it down before charging in. No need for anyone to really get hurt... Among the children, Famina feels (and looks) pretty awkward. Once they've settled down, at first she's bombarded with questions. "You wear lots of metal!" "How come you're so tall?" "Are you a warrior like Xenia?" Famina tries answering questions one at a time, with child-confusing answers like, "My family comes from a strong stock of winter-fighting, fierce hunters and raiders, and my own father was said to be quarter-giant-" It's strange, but despite her lack of children-skills, she naturally gets along well with them, or at least doesn't scare them away. Dinner could be yet another goof up for her. She dictates a courageous tail to the children in between gulps of food and plenty of drink. Once, she loudly drinks a full flagon of ale then burps quite loudly, and proudly. She, in fact, drinks a bit too much. Much of this prompts giggles from the kiddies.
Belkior Thursday December 8th, 2005 12:39:44 PM
The halfling cleric finds the corner where "his" group of children have settled. It's reassuring to Belkior that the children have stayed together after arriving through the teleportal.
He spreads out his sleeping mat and prepares his evening prayers to Alemi. After making sure that everything is in its place, Belkiro will return to where Angus and the others are.
"Not that I don't trust Kay but she seems somewhat .... ahh ... distracted, but we should check with the teleportal to confirm that Florin and Jella did return to Floating City. If they're still here in Plateau City we should look them up."
"I am going to thank Alemi in the morning for the children's lives. Any of you should feel free to join me."
Belkior will go back to his sleeping mat and sit. He will tell parables and stories of the life of Alemi to the children, hoping to inspire them.
Angus Thursday December 8th, 2005 3:41:18 PM
Angus enjoys te company of the kids and mulls over what he watched of the combats. Angus thinks to himself, how to have everyone work together, we must set up strategies for a few situations. Angus is still thinking about the group and its capabilities as he drifts of to sleep.
Angus wakes early and waits for all of the shields and the two newcomers to assemble. "I have considered a basic strategy if we get into unexpected or even expected scraps. We have Syr and Famina on one flank or as one group and Lang, Wynn and Ashlan as the other flank or group. That will leave Xenia as reserve in the center with Belkior and me to help out as needed. Comments?"
Angus continues in a very excited tone. "We can also have a chase group, which must include Syr and a scouting group that should be made up of Xenia, Syr and maybe Lang. We can give this more thought, but lets just work on our basic set up as we must incorporate some new people."
Syr Thursday December 8th, 2005 7:31:18 PM
Listening to Angus' excited speech about tactics the elf can't help but grin, "Sure thing. Just think of me as a bolt, boss, just point and fire." He moves over to crash near Lang and whispers to him briefly, "Who'd of thought the scrawny sorceror a tactician?" He grins in the darkness, "By the way, have you given some thought to that hat Xenia suggested, or maybe a spell to change you back? (polymorph other) I for one wouldn't mind using our stash on that kind of cause?"
Angus (second Illegal Post) Thursday December 8th, 2005 8:45:09 PM
Angus grins back at Syr. "I have been thinking of studying the aspects of polymorph myself. That could be fun. The hat my be a bit much at this time, but we should keep it in the back of our minds for later. Maybe someone will purchase it for individual use too. I like your concept of a bolt, a lightning bolt....."
Lang (second post) Thursday December 8th, 2005 9:21:31 PM
"Nah Syr. It is ok for now. I do not mind that much. Maybe one day the group will decide to quest to have our changes reversed."
"Besides, maybe someone powerful in the future will need our help and we can 'persuade' them to change us back for free."
DM George Thursday December 8th, 2005 10:05:48 PM
The group falls asleep to the sounds of little snores and some louder ones from Lang. Morning soon comes and the group is startled awake to the sounds of giggling. They have had crashes, bangs and alarms but it has been a long time since they had any giggling.
The group rises, performs any morning rituals they feel they need but soon see Steve walking in the large warehouse doors. "You ready for some breakfast? Follow me."
Steve leads them out into the streets and through several byways. The streets are active as people are hurrying to work, the days activities and chores. The group realizes that this city seems more vibrant than the Big Float. The levels on the Big Float acted as a means of segregation. More classes are evident on the street. Merchants mixing with urchins, tradesmen walking with common laborers, the city is already starting to hum.
Soon the group finds themselves in front of an Inn called the Tea and Toast. Stevel looks at them and smiles, "Yeah it is a stupid name but the food is great. Make sure you get the flap jacks, they put cream and berries on them. They are to die for."
The group makes their way into the restaraunt and see it is doing a booming business. Many patrons are eating wonderful smelling food. The smell of coffee and frying bacon is heavy on the air. Ashbeard has already arrived and is sitting at the head of a long table. He waves to the others as he sips from a large mug. He signals for everyone to sit down.
Drinks are poured according to desire and fresh rolls are put on the table. Ashbeard says he has already ordered for everyone and soon a line of serving wenches stream out of the kitchens holding several bowls each. The group is served family style. Eggs, bacon, fried potatos, fruits, sausages and the famous flapjacks are available.
Ashbeard lets everyone get started on their meals and then says, "The Von Otten family want me to officially thank you for saving one of their own. I understand that things in the Floating City are bad right now. Sounds like we have good opportunities to help rebuild many businesses. Its a harsh way to get ahead but still their is money to be made.
On to your problem, you have a very large group of orphans you have to house. I might have a solution for you. The Von Ottens own a old plantation that has been out of commission for the last several years. The last owner died and was deep in debt in back taxes. We were able to take over the property recently but don't have anyone to run it yet. It has a large house. Maybe we can prevail upon you to clean it up, use it as a house for the little ones and get the farm running again. We could take our rents in produce and livestock and it would give your orphans a home and a possible trade. What do you think?"
Xenia (2nd Illegal Post) Thursday December 8th, 2005 10:18:44 PM
Xenia frowns in thought. She purses her lips and makes a hmm'ing noise.
"You know, Angus, I don't know that 'flanks' are a good way to think of this thing. I mean, it's tough to know what a flank is gonna be before you're in a scrap."
"I mean, I think you got a good idea in protecting a center. So we got you in the center. Not just 'cause you can't take a hit real good, but cause you can direct better from the center. And we got Belkie there too, cause he can reach more folks easier from a center."
"Next you figure who can turn a hit best." Xenia looks around at what they got. "That's gonna be a tough one. Maybe Lang and ... um ... " she snaps her fingers to prod her memory " ... Ash. Maybe Syr too. They're your shield. They can ring you, or maybe stand in a half loose half circle. As long as they stand, you can step into and out of their protection, depending on your need."
"Then we got Wynn and Fammy. I seen Wynn do the Spring thing too. They can rove the edges and provide flanking. Me? I move and tumble, and I work best flanking too. I'd probably rove with them."
Xenia frowns again. "Wish I could do magic. What we need is some crippling and diverting magic. I'll have to work on that."
"Anywho, that's kinda what I been thinking. Whaddya say?"
Ashlan Sinclair d20+4=19 Thursday December 8th, 2005 11:46:28 PM
Ashlan enjoys his meal and at the mention of his name or atleast it cut down some by Xenia he glances her way and nods alittle, glad to atleast be mentioned by his name and not Jancassis boy or some such. He stays silent though as he eats and listens to what is said.
At the mention of working on a plantation it brings back memories of his life dropped off on the farm and his adopted parents and he drops the piece of food he was eating and pushes the plate away, suddenly full and bites his lip before pulling his harmonica out of his pocket and tapping it, "If you don't mind I feel like abit of music, you all should talk about the life the orphans will have as you know them better and everything."
Ashlan now begins playing a light tune as he keeps his mind from the subject of the plantation and also burying his memory of his childhood.

Belkior Friday December 9th, 2005 7:30:34 AM
The halfling cleric is quietly performing his morning devotions to Alemi when he hears the giggling. Despite his cloistered upbringing, Belkior is becoming more worldly. So he pointedly ignores the giggling ... and the accompanying crashing and banging ... while he completes his morning service.
When Steve returns to the warehouse, Belkior has already groomed his fur, washed his face and hands and teeth, donned his armor and organized his packs and other belongings. Having done so, he has been trying to instruct his group of children on the importance of morning hygiene and an organized start to the day. Not very successfully, but it's a start. The announcement of breakfast tears away any attention that the children had, so Belkior dismisses them.
During the trip to the inn, Belkior hovers around the group of children. His repeated instructions to "Keep up", "Look both ways before crossing a street", "Don't play with the horse manure", "Stop teasing, Wally" and "Slow down - don't get too warm before breakfast" fall on mainly deaf ears.
Belkior stands in the doorway of the "Tea and Toast", letting his eyes adjust to the light inside. He sees Ashbeard at the table and notes that a higher bench has been provided for the smaller children. He heads in that direction, hoping that he will not be too far from Ashbeard.
Belkior orders a mug of boiled herbal infusion to start the day, specifying exactly what herbs are to be used and in what proportions. When the food comes, he passes along the bacon and sausages and concentrates on the pancakes. These aren't like any he has seen before - thin, rolled pancakes with fruit and whipped cream poured over top.
The chatter of the children nearby prevents Belkior from hearing more than snippets of what Ashbeard says. With the distraction of preventing food fights and dealing with one of the younger children who bit herself in eagerness, Belkior can't follow what Ashbeard has proposed.
Wynn Friday December 9th, 2005 8:07:57 AM
In the dark green woods, the people said She heard the news her love was dead But still she waited for him there With flowers in her golden hair
In the dark green woods, by the pale moonlight A ghost goes riding every night She has golden hair, the people say And talks to shadows on her way
The final verse of the song slips from his lips as the bard falls asleep in his ladies arms.
Morning brings the hustle and bustle of orphans, and talk of tactics. The bard remains quiet for most of the morning, until Ashbeard delivers his offer.
"I am no farmer, nor am I the keeper of an orphanage, but if you Kay, and the guardsman there are looking for a home and a livelyhood, perhaps you could run the new orphanage as Ashbeard has suggested. We could help get things fixed up and running mind you."
Angus Friday December 9th, 2005 8:32:26 AM
Angus looks to Xenia. "I see your point, but I was viewing the two flanking groups as combat teams. We can put both teams in front or to either side of the center and that included ringing the center also. I like your idea of extending powder from the center also. Lets increase the teams in number and set it up as a buddy system. Belkior and I are a team and at the center of the scrap. Lang and Ashlan are a team, with Sunshine. You and Wynn will be the rovers from the center, striking for advantage and Syr and Famina are a team. Everyone must keep their buddy up and in fighting condition and each group supports the others."
Once at breakfast, Angus partakes in the fruit and tries the flapjacks, but does not overdo it as his body can only take so much food. After Ashbeards proposal Angus replys "A very generous offer from you and the Von Otten's. I grew up on a small farm and the proposal intruiges me. We must discuss this offer."
Angus looks to the Shields and the two newcomers "We have enjoyed being the protectors of the orphans, but none of us want to settle down and run a farm or an orphanage. This looks like a golden opportunity for us to set the orphanage up so that it can be self sustaining and need less of our direct protection. I am up for this venture. Who is with me? I say we scout out the plantation first before bringing the kids. Ashbeard can we keep the kids in the warehouse while we investigate the plantation?"
Xenia Friday December 9th, 2005 11:18:25 AM
"Z'er goo 'eams 'Gus," the dark girl says around a mouthful of berries and cream. "Still," she swallows, This stuff is good! "we should oughtta figure how each team is gonna work with each other group, and, you know, like, a the whole. But," another fork full of the berries and cream, "'at probs hab ta wai' tiw we worg a bi' dagether."
"I'd still like to know what made these two start following us around in the first place," she whispers to Angus. "All I know is we dig 'em out, and suddenly you're asking us if they should join. Doncha think that's weird? I don't like it. I still don't like it."
"Hey, ya know, if you take some of these berries and boil them down into a stew, maybe with a little sugar, I think they'd go really good with these flapjacks," the girl rogue adds. Then she pushes the plate away and stands.
"Here's what I think of the plantation thing. Running a plantation is like any other kinda business. The land and the daily work and stuff is only a part of it. It's the part that you see. Whacha got behind all that is folks that know accounts. You got folks that know how to supply, to get stuff in, to fight for the best price, and to keep good relations with folks that will give you those prices. You got folks who know animals and plants and the seasons, the land and the water. You got folks who know building and fixing."
"What I'm saying is that making this work is not so much in the doing, but it's in the knowing."
"Now, if we can teach these kids all of these things, I'd say we have a good and valuable thing. They can learn this stuff, and, if they want, they can even take this knowing and go off and build a life of their own somewhere else. Anywhere else."
"But you're thinking that just taking the orphans to this place, cleaning up the house, and leaving them off is gonna do all this, I say you're fooling yourselves. All this knowing stuff ain't easy. That's why this other guy died with the place in back taxes."
"Now, maybe, between ourselves, we got the skills to do this. Maybe. But then we get into the farming business, and I'm not sure I wanna do that."
"Heading out to the plantation to take a look is a good idea. But, before we say Yay or Nay to this, I think we should also take a good look around for someone who's willing to not just manage the farm, but to put the work in to train up the kids."
"Otherwise, I think we're just dragging those orphans into a life of ... cheap labor."
Xenia ends her little speech, looking around at all the folks gathered at the table, even Ash and Fammie. She had pulled back from the last bit. The word almost squeaked out. Almost. At the last second, she had substituted the word "cheap." This could be a good thing. It could mean a future for the kids. Why think the worst? They couldn't. Right? They wouldn't. I mean, what kind of people would take a group of orphans in need and turn them into ... slaves?
Lang (ac 22; hp 62/67) & Sunshine (ac 22; hp 47/47) Friday December 9th, 2005 12:05:57 PM
Run a farm. Not a horrible idea. Not exactly what Lang wants to do as that is what his family does and he didn't stick around once he was old enough, to help manage it.
But it may solve two problems, one where the children will stay and two how to provide and income to keep the orphanage afloat. And as an extra benefit it may provide a trade for some of the children.
Many questions come to mind as the possibilities go through Lang's brain. Turning to Angus and the others.
"Angus it sounds good and all, but there are a few important questions that need to be answered. First is why did the previous owner go bankrupt? Second, what is the main item produced by the plantation? Third, do we want to take the children this far away from the Floating City? And last, what will be our committment to the Von Ottens?"
More questions come to mind, but answers to these are a good start.
"I guess going out to the place won't hurt. It will give us a chance to figure out the new group dynamics now that Florin and Tionel our gone and how these two new people will fit in."

Famina Friday December 9th, 2005 1:11:33 PM
Life on a farm...peh. Famina looks somewhat bored by the concept. She looks at the children, wondering if, with training, she could get the gumption and eagerness in them to become a group of warriors. They'd grow up together, comrades in arms, united as orphans... But looking at the others, it's obvious that none of them would consider her ideas. Especially the dark girl, with her ideas of peace and quiet. Who wants a life like that? She decides not to say anything, because she's more eager to find an adventure, which she's certain will spring up as soon as they take care of these orphans...

OOC Sorry for the confusion but the children aren't with you. They are still in the warehouse under the care of the two guardsmen and Kay.
The group discusses tactics and plans for the future. Though some aren't sure, most agree that the children livig on a farm seems to be a good idea. When questions arise on what the plantation produced before, Ashbeard retorts, "That was part of old Jeb's problem. He alway wanted to have a winery and put a lot of his land into grapes. Though the ground seemed to be suited for them, they took to long to grow and he couldn't afford enhancing magic. Finally bankrupted him. His other main product was cotten but he did have several acres devoted to normal foodstuffs and corn. The corn was to feed his livestock."
Ashbeard will look around at the Crimson Shields and continue, "Looks like your finished with your meal. Why don't you take a ride out to the plantation and have a look around." A frown crosses his face and he adds, "I must warn you however that some say the plantation is cursed, even haunted. Still I am sure you can run off any pests that might have taking up habitation. Come back with me to the office and I will arrange a guide and a wagon for you."
Ashbeard stands up and single for one of the serving wenches for the bill. He pays it and starts heading outside. As the group is heading back, they are suddenly confronted by a giant. This giant is at least 12' tall and carries an even larger staff. His face is human however and it makes you wonder if he has been enhanced somehow. When Ashbeard sees him, he stubbles to a stop and murmers, "Zef the Dark"
The extremely tall human says, "Ashbeard, greetings from the Shigott family." He suddenly is a blur of motion as he launches an attack on the unfortunate dwarf. He leaps in and swings 4 times very quickly. He only connects with two of them but those two are enough to render Ashbeard unconcious. The human nimbly jumps back and comments. "I don't know the rest of you and haven't been paid for your deaths. You can leave now and live."
The human is 15' away, has no armor on and is casually spinning his quarterstaff. The rest of the street took one look at this confrontation and is in the process of scattering.
Xenia OoC Saturday December 10th, 2005 7:55:55 AM
May we have a map?
I ask because you mention that Ashbeard is just making for the door. Then you mention that The "rest of the street" take one look.
Are we indoors or outdoors? The degree of confinement to the space presents tactical advantages and disadvantages when faced with an enlarged person who is possibly a monk.
Sorry if I wasn't clear. You are outside. Figure you are on a street that is 15' wide and has buildings on both sides rising up a couple of stories. You don't have an obvious side streets in your combat zone. I don't want to bother with a map yet. It is only one combatant. If it gets hairy or confusing then I will make one.

Angus will step to the middles of the group and mention causally. "Remember to stick with your buddies." Angus then concentrates on the big human. "Good sire you have just rendered our guard unconcious. That is very rude. How are we to get where we are going." Angus is concerned that all may be lost with the orphans if Ashbeard is killed.
Angus will look to his scrap buddie, Belkior. "Can you see how bad Ashbeard is off, from here, mind you."
Angus will cast dispel magic on the giant.
The orphans aren't with you. They are back in the warehouse. Please make a dispel magic roll. 1d20+your caster level.
I made two rolls if needed 16+7 and 15+7

Xenia reaches behind to her haversack and retrieves a potion.
"Angus," she whispers, "can you give one of your big guys a jolt of invisible, so they can get up next to him without getting bashed?
"Wynn and Fammie oughta be able to zip in and out. Stick him without drawing that staff down on them. I think they should do that. Try and draw him off."
"Belkie, if you can raise the dwarf and get him walking, we could maybe take this guys mark away from him. Then he'd have to go where we lead or give up his commission. Maybe we could even draw him back into the inn."
"We can control the space. But even so, we'll probs take a beating. get ready to prop our guys up, Belkie. I think they're gonna need it."
The rogue tags one of the round seals running down her leg. Suddenly, the party multiplies by a factor of five.
"Flank him!" the rogue shouts. "Big guys are easier to flank!"
Then she downs the potion. "Shoulda got the wizard version," she mutters to herself as the shield springs up.

That's a good point. You don't have a problem with a character that can leap in, strike FOUR times, and then leap back?
Also, we're a party of six. The alley is 15 feet wide. That's Three Five-Foot squares or three character's wide. The opponent looks to be large-sized. He is also 15 feet away. That means he can take a 5-foot step and hit someone in the front line with four blows.
I'm interested in knowing who the three characters are who are in the closest three squares. Another good reason for a map.
DM George Clarifications Saturday December 10th, 2005 9:50:26 PM
OOC We will say that Ashbeard and Angus were walking side by side in the front. Behind them were Lang and Ashlan. Then Famina and Belkior Bringing up the rear are Xenia and Wynn holding hands. Lang moved forward to stand over Ashbeard's fallen body. Sunshine is to Lang's left but in the second row. You have room for one more to come into the front row or squeeze past and do something else. Of course it is much more confusing now since everyone has 5 images flowing and blending into each other.

I do not hold assassins in high reguard and you should make peace now before departing for the underwold."
Ashlan brushes his cloak to the side abit and takes a different stance then he took fighting lang, now standing to the side some with the kukri held slightly higher then the longsword, "Step in and let us dance for I will hunt you if you don't try your worse now."

It has been pointed out to me that I have made a mistake on my interpretation of spring attack. My NPC did to much this round. Though I could justify this by saying that the opponent started his attack from 10' away, I will give the party the benefit of the doubt, and say he spang in and couldn't spring out. Still he is 10' away due to his large size. Lang can move forward 5' and still get his full attack do to his large size. Matt roll if you so desire.
Wynn [AC=19, HP=52] d20+11=26 d6=6 d20+11=18 d6=5 Sunday December 11th, 2005 11:06:20 AM

Angus finding him in the strange lead postion will make sure he lets those that are armed and armored pass him and take his position in the middle of the group. Angus will lay a hand on the shoulder of his scrap buddy, Belkior, as he moves forward toward the middle himself.
Angus will scan the giant for other spells in addition to the assumed enlarge person: spellcraft rolls 27, 34, and 26 - dc20 + spell level.
Belkior (AC 22; HP 40) d20+18=34 d8+5=13 Sunday December 11th, 2005 4:43:37 PM
The halfling cleric stands amdi the confusion and wonders how they got here. One minute we're discussing the merits of farming, and now fighting a magically enhanced crazy man, thinks Belkior.
Belkior looks ahead to where Ashbeard has fallen, attempting to determine whether there is any point to healing the man. Heal = 34
IF Ashbeard is still breathing, Belkior will move ahead into the spot vacated by Lang or Ashlan and cast a healing spell on the fallen dwarf. Cure Light Wounds = 13 hps
Otherwise, Belkior will stay where he is and cast a Hold Person spell on the attacker and then draw his mace.
Famina (AC 21, 22/dodge vs. giant guy, hp 84/84) d20+11=25 d8=6 Monday December 12th, 2005 1:18:02 PM
As always, Famina wears her shield strapped to her arm, but right now her longsword is at her side. She curses the time it takes to draw the sword (Move action), then steps up to attack. "To hit an opponent when he's not expecting it is cowardly and unfair!" she shouts at the man angrily. Her sword swings through the air (AC 25, did 10 damage to him.) "Surrender at once!"
Famina (add on) Monday December 12th, 2005 1:19:10 PM
[I dunno quite how Spring Attack works, but assuming I could use it for my attack, then Famina would attempt to follow that battleplan from earlier, and dart in at the guy, then come out behind or to the side of him, flanking him if possible.]
It is always helpful to read about your feats before trying to use them. This time it worked out. You basically moved forward, took one swing and jumped back.
Syr Monday December 12th, 2005 5:11:45 PM
Syr hangs near the back of the group as the two large figures take up all the space near the front of combat. If there is room, he darts in and lifts Ashbeard's body, moving the dwarf to safety at the rear of the group.
DM George Combat round 2 3d6(6+2+5)=13 d20+2=18 Monday December 12th, 2005 11:38:31 PM
Lang moves forward and stands guard over Ashbeard'd body swords drawn. (OOC Sorry Matt, my original assumption was that you were large sized but your not. Your just a big medium. You only have a reach of 5' so you couldn't attack. I took your actions in your first post)
Ashlan moves forward and supports Lang in his defense. He is ready to strike if the monk comes in. (Justin I believe your trying to do to much in this round. You can't ready a full attack. A full attack is a full attack by its definition)
Xenia, the busy girl, breaks a seal giving everyone an image. She then searches out a potion and drinks it down, eyes peeled over the flask watching for trouble.
Wynn pulls out his bow and shoots twice at the tall monk. He hits once with a minor hit.
Angus backs up a few steps, to give his big bury bodyguards, I mean companions room to operate. He casts dispel magic on the monk hoping to end several of his spells. He only sees the one enlarge and its is gone. The human shrinks down to normal size.
Belkior takes a look at the downed dwarf and does notice that the factor is still breathing. He moves forward kneeling down behind Lang, casts a healing spell. Ashbeard's eyes flutter open and murmers, "No refunds." before focusing on Belkior. "What happened?" he asks.
Famina squeezes by everyone else and attacks the monk, hitting for a minor wound. She then springs away rejoining Langs and Ashlan's front battleline.
Syr squeezes forward past everyone, (sorry realize that I forgot to include you in the maraching order. For ease, we will say you were in the very back.) and starts pulling the downed but now concious dwarf back towards saftey.
******************************************
New marching order: 10' away is the now normal sized monkn from the front row. Front row from left to right: Ashlan, Lang, Famina. Second row: Belkior and Angus. Third row: Xenia and Wynn. Forth row: Ashbeard and Syr
The monk is dazzled by the multitude of things that just happened in front of him. He snarls, "I see you might have some skills. Well I have some tricks too!" His hand flies to his throat where two balls hang on a necklace. He steps back 5' and throws the ball into the center of the group. It explodes, fire rolling over the group. DC refex save of 14 to take half damage.
All the images wink away as the fire rolls over them.
Ashbeard sees the flash and rolls away making his save. He is concious but still looks pretty bad off.
Since the monk stepped 5' back, he is now 15' away from the front line.

A little annoyed with himself, Lang steps forward the short distance to the now regular sized human and smacks him with his shortsword.

Belkior (AC 22; HP 34/40) d20+5=19 d8+5=12 Tuesday December 13th, 2005 7:45:32 AM
The halfling cleric nimbly ducks and covers when he sees the now diminished fighter tossing a sphere towards the party. Belkior avoids the worst of the fire that rolled over the party. Reflex save = 19, 6 dmg
Belkior stands and looks at the mirror images of everyone, marvelling at how they all reflect the damage received by the fireball.
Still, he feels that his first priority is to keep their potential benefactor alive. He moves to the rear of the party, passing by Xenia and Wynn. Then he reaches over and allows some healing energies to flow into Ashbeard, more than healing the damage received from the fireball. Cure Light Wounds = 12 hps
OOC - The description of Mirror Image implies that the images aren't dispelled by area effect spells such as fireball, only by targetted spells and melee or missile attacks.

Angus thinks to himself that two can play that game and he cast an empowered magic missile at the monk and four oversized missiles strike the monk for 30 damage (Max. damage, wow, 20+50%) "You pissed me off boy." Angus spits at the monk and then he remembers his head and calls out to the shields "Stay with your buddies."

The orange fire fills the air like the dark rogue's hair gone wild. When it fades, though, not a hair is out of place.
"Lets not do that again," Xenia mutters. "I'll be right back, Wynn." The rogue trades places with Belkior, slipping around him as he moves toward the back of the melee. As she glides forward, links of spiked chain slip into her hand.
"Behind and to the left," she warns Lang as she pulls up behind him. Then the chain snakes out and rips at the necklace around the Zef guy's neck.

With this said Ashlan charges forward full blast and aims low as he tries barreling through the man's legs to take him down. Gritting his teeth at any attack to land as he does.

The wave of heat is surprising, but not earth-shattering to the toughened amazon. Even her hair doesn't get too singed. That must be some conditioner! She sings out in a loud voice, "That stings! You will regret your actions!" And with that she springs forward, becoming an entirely different being. There's a look to her face of utter calm, but her eyes are filled with pure anger. Moving like a dancer, she springs forward, twirling midair in a blur, her sword slashing high at the martial arts' experts face and leaving a deep cut. (provoking an AOO, +4 AC due to mobility) The shimmering silver shield she carries glistens, and the lion's face upon it roars its fury at him, reaching out to bite at him ferociously with sharp fangs. (Hit AC 30 with my sword and did 13 damage, the second roll's a mistake [thought the shield attacked with my total attack roll, only my BA], the shield hit AC 13, probably missed.)

Lang shuffles forward and a hairy paw holding a shortsword lashes out and slices the monk.
Sunshine tries to trip the monk and fails. (Matt, Sunshine would normally need to make a reflex save against the monk's DC or be tripped himself. Not gonna matter this time but remember for the future.
Wynn shoots at the monk but just misses
Belkior heals the battered and crispy Ashbeard
Angus shoots off a very powerful magic missile spell pounding the monk badly
Xenia moves forward, uncoiling her spiked chain. She flicks it forward and it wraps around the necklace on the monks neck. She pulls back and the chain flies from the monks neck. It retracts towards her and lands close to her feet, luckily not exploding. (Rolled a save of 16) OOC I put a question about this on the rules board but most likely in the future, I am going to want you to make a touch attack first. Since you didn't know that now, I will let it stand.
Syr talks to Ashbeard and the dwarf responds, "He is just an assassin sent by a rival merchant family whom I have bettered in some deals lately. Luckily for me, you were here. Otherwise I would be food for the crows now."
Ashlan springs forward and tries to overrun the monk but the monk chooses to just avoid the attack and sidesteps.
Famina in a rage strides in and slashes the monk with a deep wound. He grimaces in pain. OOC not quite sure why you think you are going to get hit with an AOO. I don't see a reason for it.

The monk is overwhelmed by the multitude of attacks coming his way and decides life is good and he wants to keep on living. He spits out, "You will regret coming between me and my prey. Next time I will be better prepared."
He then withdraws from the combat. He dashes 75' down the street and then turns a corner and is lost from site.

The dark rogue swoops down on the fallen necklace, scooping it off the street with the sweep of one hand. The chain she drapes over one shoulder.
"Leastwise we got something for our trouble. You guys alright?"
She plays the short skirmish back in her mind.
"You know, Angus," she says, "you might want to rethink the pair thing. I mean, it's a good idea for just going around. But in the mix, I think the pairs break apart if there's no tactics-like reason for the two to be together. It's not like it's a bad idea or anything. But I think it's too simple to last through a whole fight. I got the feeling that thinking on the fly is gonna be more the thing for the future."
Wandering back to Wynn, she gives his arm a squeeze. "Good shots," she grins. "Wanna see what I got?"

Wynn Tuesday December 13th, 2005 11:41:36 PM
Wynn grips his bow. He grips it so tightly his knuckles are white. Inclining his head towards the rogue, his eyes are none-the-less trained on the prone dwarf being ministered to by the party cleric. Through gritted teeth he addresses those close by and out of ear-shot of the dwarf.
"I'm not sure about this Ashbeard guy," he says in a low voice, "or the Von Otten family he works for. They own just about everything around here, and yet they're running around during this time of crisis in disguises and under false pretenses." The bard's voice rises a little, reflecting the half-elf's exasperation, "and then this one's got assassins trying to take him out!" Wynn runs a hand through his hair, pushing it off his face. As soon as he lowers his head, the hair falls back over his forehead and into his eyes, as he mutters, "I just don't get it."
Belkior (AC 22; HP 34/40) d8+1=7 Wednesday December 14th, 2005 7:15:03 AM
The halfling cleric stands from where he was crouching near the fallen Ashbeard. After confirming that their potential employer is fit to move, Belkior extends a hand and helps the dwarf to his feet.
Belkior then looks around, trying to gauge everyone's health status. Most people except Xenia have been at least singed by the fireball. "Angus, come over here so that I can heal you. Lang, too, and ... ah ... Famina, is it?"
Belkior retrieves a wand from his HHHaversack and extends it towards whoever requests healing now.
"Whoever that was," and Belkior now looks pointedly at Ashbeard, "He probably wasn't a devotee of Alemi. I wonder what you or your employers did to provoke whoever hired him?"

Syr (max) Wednesday December 14th, 2005 7:55:10 AM
Dusting Ashbeard's back off, "So this attack was aimed at you and not the Von Ottens? I'm not so sure about this plantation idea if the family is under attack?"
Obviously impressed with everyone's prowess he pats Angus on the back and looks over at the dark elf, "Hey Xenia, What's with the new toy? He points to the chain draped over her shoulder."
Angus Wednesday December 14th, 2005 9:58:11 AM
Angus ponders the new enemy they have created and moves over to Belkior and request. "I certainly would like some healing. That was much too toasty. Thanks."
"Syr see if you can track our assassin. I will make you invisible and then Lang can follow, but only track as long as Syr is invisible (7 minutes). Maybe we can get lucky and find out where he goes or who helps him. The rest of us will stay with Ashbeard for now and wait for your return." Angus says to the group as he casts invisibility on Syr.
Angus turns to Xenia. "I disagree completely. We need to have a buddy combat system set up. Lang and Ashlan look to be a good team and so do Famina and Syr. That leaves Belkior and myself as natural partners and you and Wynn as the reserve. I think the battle worked extactly how it should have. The two major combat teams of Lang and Ashland and Famina and Syr took direct action. Syr protected Ashbeard and the battle did not last long enough for him to join his partner. They left you and Wynn for utility work, which was excellent. I say the battle buddy systems stays at least for now since it was so sucessful. I only ask that in the future attempt to communicate when possible with your buddy." Angus takes a breath and continues "It appears we have a scout/chase buddy group for after combat with Syr and Lang"
Xenia (2nd Illegal Post) Wednesday December 14th, 2005 10:46:25 AM
"Yeah, alright. Good enough," the rogue replies over her shoulder.
Still holding the necklace up for Wynn to see, Xenia uses the bauble for cover and nods in brief grim agreement. She flicks her eyes covertly in the direction of the Ashbeard Von Otten Dwarf guy, indication that she will watch him in the future.
Syr (OMG, I think this is the first illegal post for me EVER) Wednesday December 14th, 2005 4:10:29 PM
The elf enjoys the tingly feeling from the spell being cast and waves his hand in front of his own eyes to test it. Glad for the invisibility, he kicks a toe into the dirt and feels his face heat up. "Ummm boss, not sure I can do the tracking thing. I mean, I've never tried to do that stuff before, heck until we were in the Woods, I have never left Floating City. How about Lang and I go together and I race back here if we find anything?"
OOC: I could be wrong but looking at all the damage done, especially from the missiles... methinks the DM wants this foe to appear again later. Now if he teams up with our other nemesis, then I'll be conviced we have a truely EVIL DM. Also, send me your email. I have no problem emailing you Syr's character sheet so you have an idea of what he can/cannot do? Makes sense from a strategic point of view.
Famina (Raging still) Wednesday December 14th, 2005 7:48:09 PM
Unfortunately for her, it's not a quick return to sensibility. The guy turns and runs away, moving very fast, and Famina instinctively pursues after him, moving very fast (40' base movement) but not fast enough. She probably chases after him for one or two rounds but then loses sight of him. (Of course this is up to the DM.)
Angus (Illegal second post) Wednesday December 14th, 2005 7:51:11 PM
Angus is pleased to see Syr dissapear and comment. "Just track him by sight as you have the best speed. See where he goes and do not dally. Good Luck."
Angus looks to Ashbeard. "You have powerful enemies. Maybe you should fill us in on a bit more background on this plantation before we check it out or think of moving any kids out there. You mentioned that it was rumored to be haunted. Lets start there." Angus waits for a response and looks up at the sun as if measuring time for Syr.
DM George Wednesday December 14th, 2005 10:29:39 PM
The battle is over as quickly as it has begun. The assassin scampered away at breakneck speed and attempts to track him or follow him are quickly discovered to be futile. (tough to track someone on a city street.) Famina and Syr both come back, Famina looking fatiqued.
Ashbeard looks at the group with gratitude and says, "It looks like I owe you personal thanks now. I know it must seem strange and I can assure you that I don't get assassination attempts every day. Still when you are an important member of one of the largest merchant houses in the city, you occassionally step on some toes. Our rivals sometimes play dirty. I can assure you the Von Ottens would never stoop to such a level."
He looks at Angus and smiles, "The plantation has fallen into disuse almost three year ago. Rumors of it being haunted or cursed sprang up about a year ago. Frankly I believe that is why the Von Ottens got it for such a nice price. I doubt that it is truly haunted. Most likely it has been taken over by some squatters who want to keep the more honest segment of the population away. Even if it is true and there is some undead there, a group of your fighting ability should be able to clean out a few zombies or skeletons."
The group arrives at a livery and you see the familiar Steve hitching up a wagon. He smiles and waves at the group and continues his duties.
Ashbeard says, "Steve will take you out to the plantation. It is about 10 miles south to the city. Take a look around and come back to my office and let me know what you think. If you think it will make a good home for the orphans we can further our discussions on the business end of things.
No worries, after your saving my life, I think I will be graceous in my deliberations and negotiations." Ashbeard bows, takes another look around, peering into shadows and departs.
Syr Thursday December 15th, 2005 6:48:55 AM
The elf reports back to the others and shakes his head before realizing that he can't be seen, "No luck, he was substantially faster than I, which says something about who we were dealing with."
He shakes Ashbeard's hand as he departs and bounces up into the wagon, "See you soon." From his lofty perch beside Steve he asks everyone, "Should we stop by a Temple on the way out of town for some Holy Water?"
Looking up at the sky, he tries to gauge how much daylight is left and comments to Steve, "Hope we get there before dark?"
Angus Thursday December 15th, 2005 8:22:37 AM
Angus listens to Ashbeard and thinks to himself, yes we can handle skeltons and zombies, but what about what is making them, a much too simplistic answer.
Angus looks to Ashbeard and comments. "I think we will check out the plantation tomorrow as we have some healing and recooperationg to do first, not to mention some shopping for ourselves and the orphans. Remember we just left a ruined city, most of our gear was destroyed and we have to get more toys for the kids. We will pick up Steve at the livery at daybreak tomorrow. Take care of yourself, you seem to be a marked man."
After getting the Shields and the two new members alone Angus continues "I do not feel we are getting the whole story from Ashbeard and want to visit the plantation after we do our shopping at the Catacombs and are at full strenght. There is always a hint of truth in rumors and I am not concerned about minor undead, but what might be creating them. Lets get supplies, get healed up and move out in the morning. Not to mention go play with some little ones. Wynn and Xenia do you two want to find the group lodging close to the kids warehouse. Xenia did you volunteer to go shopping for new supplies for the group?"
Angus comments to Belkior "Since the Shields are down to two spell users we may want to reconsider our spell choices for tomorrow with a thought of undead, at least for our first scouting trip. I want you and I at full strenght spell wise when we go into the unknown."
Xenia Thursday December 15th, 2005 10:13:16 AM "One ... Huh?" Xenia looks up from counting the beads on the necklace. "Shopping? No, I didn't. But I'll go. What did you want to get bought, Angus?"
"Hey!" she calls after the back of the departing dwarf. "You think about some good tutors for the kids. I don't care how nice it is. We're not gonna throw the kids out there without someone showing them how to run the place."
"Hey, Syr. Um, wherever you are. You asked about this chain." She holds it out, unsure where he is. "Wanna play with it? It's good masterwork quality. Not too expensive. I still haven't got the hang of using it really. But you can swing it out to ten feet around you. Pretty fash that way. And I bet you could use the thing and still kick and hit with, like, your elbows and stuff."
"Here, go on. Give it a try."
"I'll be right back, Wynn." Xenia reaches up on her toes to give the bard a peck in the cheek. "Dash to the Catacombs, you know. I mean, unless you wanna walk me there?" She smiles and gives him a wink.
Question: How many beads on the necklace? I would guess either two or six.
BTW, what did we finally decide to buy?
Belkior Thursday December 15th, 2005 10:43:49 AM
The halfling cleric looks at Angus and carefulyl considers his words before speaking.
"Angus," Belkior begins. "I can change my spell selection in case we really are going up against undead. If we're looking at more than one undead, there's some protective magics that I can cast. Either to hide from them, or to consecrate an area or simply to protect us from evil creatures. I can, of course, detect undead. As for harming undead, I can either target them directly or create some magic stones - only three though - that are effective against undead. Although enhancing my own turning powers by a spell may be more effective."
Belkior strokes his chin for a moment. "It would probably be best if I focused on protection and enhancing my turning ability. You can handle offensive spells."
"If I'm going to do that, of course, I need to go into a shop to pick up sme supplies. So your idea of waiting and going tomorrow is best."

Ashlan Sinclair Thursday December 15th, 2005 1:39:09 PM
Ashlan dusts off his shirt abit and sheathes his weapons, leaning against a near by wall as everyone talks and he ponders what to do for sure, he does however mumble to himself about hi performance in the fight since it seemed less then effective but makes a mental note to do better in the future.
DM George Thursday December 15th, 2005 8:57:08 PM
Steve frowns at Angus and says, "Listen if you want to go look at the plantation, lets go now. I have other plans for the rest of the week. We can stop off at the store on the way if you want but its today or your just gonna have to get yourselves out there on your own.
The plantation is a good hike away anyway. We could get there by tonight if we push but by the time we clear the city and then move the 10 miles, it might make more sense to wait for morning anyway. We can camp a mile or two away from the plantation tonight, you can make whatever preparations you want and then move on in the morning. If this house is really haunted, I don't want to show up at night anyway.
Course if you just want to go alone, I would much rather spend my time with the fine ladies of the Velvet Couch. Fine establishment with very friendly staff if you catch my meaning."
Steve climbs up into the wagon and grabs the reins and smiles, "So which is it? Am I guiding you or you doing it on your own tomorrow?"
Angus HP 15/28 Thursday December 15th, 2005 10:48:11 PM
Angus tilts his head an looks at Steve and thinks that he does not seem as simpleminded as before. Angus chooses his words carefully before starting. "We thank you for your efforts but we are new here and do not know the city or the countyside. I think we will want to sleep indoors close to our charges until we are prepared for the journey. Steve if you would be so kind as to give us direction and we will rent a cart tomorrow? Where is it best to rent a cart also?"

"We'll say how if more folks thought like you, then one of their own might not be alive today. Stars, isn't that a thought."
"Bye. We'll put in a good word for you, Steve. If you get my meaning."

Steve looks at the independent group and then focuses in on Xenia's implied threat. "Little lady, you feel free to take your complaints to whom ever you wish. The boss knows my value."
He starts unhitching the horses to the stall and says to Angus, "You leave the city from the eastern gate. Head down the main road for a ways and come to a fork. Take the left fork. Travel down that road for a while. You will come to a long stone wall. At the big maple tree, you have to leave the road and cut cross country. You will eventually stumble across another road. Head east on it. The entrance of the plantation will be on the right. I think they have it marked with a sign."
Steve finishes his chores and throws his arms around Wynn's shoulder. Did I hear your thirsty? I am thirsty too. Why don't we find a place to wet down our throats?
Oh yeah, you can rent horses here but they will expect a big deposit. Don't let them rent you any nags."
Whether or not Wynn accepts, Steve will head off with a smile on his face, whistling a happy tune at the unexpected day off.
The group looks at each other suddenly realizing that they really don't know their way around this city. How do they get back to where they spent the night? How do they find the catacombs? Where was that warehouse with the orphans? I will need intelligence rolls from everyone please.

Angus says to Steve. "Thanks for the help?" and bide the man goodbye.

I do not expect that Lang can ride, or a horse will let him sit their back."
Before leaving Steve Angus will inquire about renting a wagon and horse for a few days at the livery. Angus will attempt to be as diplomatice as possible and get the best price for the group.
Diplomancy 19
Angus will do his best to discern is the group is getting the best deal.

(Btw, I forgot about DR, so I only took 10 points from that fireball instead of 14.) Famina returns to the group feeling tired and less angry. At least the coward ran away completely, proving himself utterly weak. Despite his quickness, she's pretty sure that next time she sees the giant, she can take him out one on one. She mentions to the others, "This isn't the first time I've fought enemies larger than myself. Do you suppose he is half-giant? Or merely enchanted? I think the latter because of his other tricks." Hearing that they're heading out to the plantation, Famina adds to the tactical suggestions. "I must admit, I am very light on armaments at the moment. And the ones I have are not of use against magic creatures... If one of you mages could have a spell ready to enchant my blade? And to increase my strength. Such improvements would be most welcome." (Call it Mikey's intuition, but he realizes now he made a big mistake not getting a +1 weapon... :P) As to where to go for the night, suddenly, poor Famina realizes she's completely lost. She turns back to the group with the dark cloud of a frown upon her face. Then ...
"WOOOOO!!!" Both gloved fists raise up into the air in a gesture of jubilant excitement. "We're free! We're free and we're in PLATEAU CITY!!! Time for party!"
She claps hands on Wynn's shoulders and jumps up into the air. The slim rogue laughs and jumps from Wynn to Angus, to Syr, to Belkior and to Lang. She even jumps up on Fammie. "Oh, yeah. Here." She flashes a flask of oil, showing it to the big muscular woman. "I got two of these. It makes your weapon magic."
It's a bit too weird to include the scorpion guy in all the good cheer, though.
"Hey, I'll go with you tomorrow to the Temple of Light, Belkie. I heard it's one o' those places you just gotta see. C'mon guys. Plateau City is just, like, the biggest place around, you know. We can't come here and not go around and see stuff. We just can't."

Ashlan looks to Wynn and Xenia knowing they were the two that didn't like him the most, "I know the battle probably proved nothing of my worth really let alone gained trust but it would mean alot if you all would join me for the celebration. I'm wondering if the addition of you two moves me into a different role? Not that it's a bad thing... just different." Silent and pondering for a moment, he perks up, "I may be able to help you, although it's not much?"
He reaches down into a boot and swiftly pulls out a dagger, spinning it slightly in his fingers before offering it hilt first to his partner. The dagger is simple bright steel with a small green gem in it's pommel. With a grin, "Keep this as a backup until you get something more permanent. "Listen Ash, I dunno what Wold you live in, but in mine everybody has a worth and it's not something that you gotta prove in battle. If that's how you measure yourself, you can go find a bucket of worth by joining a war somewhere instead of following us around."
"And trust. Trust don't have nothing to do with worth. Trust has to do with knowing each other and knowing that you both want the same things in life. Common goals, you know."
The dark rogue shakes her head and her ponytail waggles behind her.
"Maybe you just don't understand this, but this takes time. It's not just one battle and we think you're a bud. I don't care how well you fight. If you fought well, I'd trust you less, 'cause you'd be more dangerous."
"Trust comes from knowing. And I'm still not convinced of the reasons why you wanna hang around with us. But, if you wanna follow us around and get in the way of incoming swords and stuff, well you feel free. Angus seems to think we need some meat bodies to put up a wall in a fight, and I can't say he's wrong in that."
"But, until that day that I think I know you, until that day that I know why you're here, don't expect me to believe you. And don't expect me to accept any food from you either. Cause you follow a god who specializes in poison and lies."
Xenia turns to face the others.
"Just in case you didn't know. Poison and lies."
Lang (ac 22; hp 49/67) & Sunshine (ac 22; hp 47/47) d20=6 Sunday December 18th, 2005 10:36:02 AM
"Belkior, I could probably use a cure spell if we are possibly heading into danger tomorrow at the plantation."
Lang takes a look around as everyone tries to get their bearings on where they are (Intelligence roll 6).
"I am not exactly sure where we are. And I doubt I can track our way back."
"Angus, don't worry about me. Sunshine & I should have no problem keeping up with the wagon. At least the directions to the place sound fairly easy. Do you think we will have problems with the wagon when we need to leave the road and travel across the countryside?""

Wynn d20+2=20 Sunday December 18th, 2005 6:45:50 PM
"Thanks Steve, but I'd better stay with my friends and make sure they find their way back to the warehouse" the bard thumps the man's back good heartedly as he leaves "Maybe next time!"
"OK folks, follow me and I'll lead you back [Int check to remember the way = 20]. Keep your eye out for a nice Inn on the way."
Wynn walks with Xenia on the way back and wonders just what she intends to bring back from the catacombs. Alas, Ashalan disturbs his lascivious train of thought with talk of a celebration. "Not much to celebrate" he replies, "but if your buying..."
[OOC George - any result from the sense motive check (15) last round...still don't quite trust this Ashbeard!]
Ashlan seems like he has many levels. You got a decent feeling from the dwarf and you don't feel like he is sending you into a known trap but maybe he is willing to use you as an asset to scout a possible bad situation.
DM George Sunday December 18th, 2005 8:01:37 PM
OOC Thought I would give you an extra post to keep things moving. I will still be posting tomorrow night.
Angus seems to know his way best but the group does get turned around for a while and has to do some back tracking. (you needed a dc 15, just made it!)
Before the group leaves the livery, Angus finds out that they will have to leave a 100 gp deposit for the horses and the wagon but they will be given 97 back if everything is returned in good order.
The group is able to get directions to the catacombs and conduct some business.
When they finally get back to the warehouse, Wynn remembers some of the Inns that were pointed out by Steve and can point them out to Xenia wondering what the surprise could be.
Ashlan invites all to dinner and is buying so the group takes advantage, (Post if you aren't) Good food is had along with fine wine and entertainment. (Ashlan the meal for everyone, assuming not bringing the orphans is 8 gps)
The group then starts talking to the locals to gather information on the Von Ottens. They discover that the family has a decent reputaion. They treat their help fair if not lavious and have many different concerns through out the city. They own outright several mills, and seem to back several more professions having partial interests in many different business. They seem to be moneylenders primarily but this has lead them to other business opportunities as well. For intstance they seem to own or at least have a controlling interest in one of the finer brothels in the city.
Angus 15/28 hp Pending Curing or the Nights Rest Monday December 19th, 2005 11:00:35 AM
Before dinner the Ashlan is treating Angus will ask Belkior for curing. "Belkior could you cure up those of us that are burned as it will make us more presentable for dinner."
After dinner Angus will stand and make a toast "To a fine group of people that I trust my life with and to sucess tomorrow. Tomorrow we start a new begining for ourselves and the orphans. Also our two new members, Ashlan and Famina, look to be great additions and we will see how they perform over the next few days. Ashlan, thank you for your generousity as that is a cornerstone of the Shields."
In the morning, Angus will leave 10 gp with Kay for her to purchase toys with for the kids entertainment. (Will mark off my character sheet)
After picking up Belkior after morning prayers and heading over to the livery with the Shields, Angus suggests that we pay for the wagon rental with the resurrection fund and after payment Angus asks for a receipt and the clerks name.
Once the group starts out in the morning, Angus will suggest that we ride in the wagon in shifts, actually with your scrape buddy. That way we will be reasonably rested when we arrive at the plantation. "Lang and Syr do you each want to take turns at point to lead the way with your buddies."
Xenia Monday December 19th, 2005 3:14:43 PM
Xenia comes out of the Catacombs with several packages. From a box she takes two long objects wrapped in tissue. Wands of Curing Light wounds, she gives one to Wynn and one to Lang. There's a squarish package wrapped in brown paper that she gives to Syr, Bracers +1.
"A'right. I spent 5200 gold. That still leaves us a good five thou plus. I think we're good."
Into her haversack she puts a couple of personal purchases. Two vials wrapped in the same white tissue. The Necklace of Fireballs. (Wouldn't want that to go off in the city.) And lastly, she slides a flat rectangular box into the big compartment of the bag.
"Ya picked out an inn?" she asks the bard. "I got something to share. Just with you."
Ashlan Sinclair d4=4 Monday December 19th, 2005 6:01:50 PM
Ashlan at the meal he pays for for everyone hopes to get each person to showup and will go out of his way to ask Xenia to please come too. He will also explain that there is no way he could or would have the food posined since they will be eating at a place to serve them and a very nice place none the less.
After the meal is served Ashlan stands and looks to each person, "Everyone, I know none of you well but I thank you and specially Angus for allowing me to follow along. To be honest my parents left me on a farm when I was really young, wanting to continue their wandering the Wold. I watched them struggle to get by and to provide for everyone and so when I got old enough I left to make money and be on my own. It has been a nice change to work with people for once and mercenary or not I owe you for saving me, even a mercenary has a code that he upholds rather it be as moral as others or not." Ashlan takes a sip of his drink before speaking once more, "Also when I was younger my adopted family had a tradition and one I have tried to continue. All saints or all Wold day is very close and in case we are not in a place suitable to do it I wish to give each your gift now. In hopes of a bright future and a lasting friendship to be."
Ashlan moves around the table, taking a dagger and it's sheath from his backpack and placing one infront of each person. The dagger is normal other then roses are engraved along the blade and once touched your name will become engraved on it in high Woldian. When he reaches Xenia however he looks to her and pulls off his gauntlet, "I know you don't trust me and keep reminding everyone of the sumbol, if you fear this blade to be poisoned or such then hear." Ashlan takes the blade and runs it across the palm of his hand (4 point of damage) and then wipes the blade clean once more before placing it infront of her and wrapping his hand, "I been with you all this time so you know I haven't drank antitoxen, I also bought it recently in the Catacombs that in it's own should show it's clean."
He walks now to his place at the table and sits down.
(OOC:If Ashlan can get Xenia to go by any means then Ashlan will give the dagger and still follow what I posted.)
Lang (ac 22; hp 49/67; pre-cure & nights rest) & Sunshine (ac 22; hp 47/47) d20+12=23 Monday December 19th, 2005 6:33:57 PM
Lang goes to the meal and thanks Ashlan for paying for it. He is pleasantly suprised by Ashlan's gift and display of it towards Xenia.
"Thank you Ashlan. I will honor your gift."
Lang nods to Angus when he directs him to lead the group half the time. In the morning when the group starts moving he takes point with Ashlan.
"Come on Ashlan we will take point first. Do you have any tracking skill? If not, I will try to point out some of the things I look for."
Tracking 23.
After a few hours he will move back to the group and let Syr take point. Lang and Sunshine will then take up rear guard, with Ashlan if he wants to.

DM George Monday December 19th, 2005 6:42:58 PM
OOC I am going to award a quick amount of experiecne points for the end of the last module and the beginning of this one. 1500 for everyone.
Famina Monday December 19th, 2005 9:04:01 PM
"Thank you... I will try to act well in combat, and earn your trust you place in me." Famina responds. "I do tend to be a bit foolhardy, though, so perhaps I need a bit of a backup once in a while. Among my people...well, throwing yourself into what you do is best, for life is short and exciting, not long and dull, is it not better to have it that way?"
The tall, muscular woman accepts the offer of a free meal, given in the spirit of friendship, gladly. At the meal, she observes Ash's sincere-seeming attempts to befriend the others and smiles slightly. "This is a wonderful city to celebrate in. Perhaps we should go seek out some sort of trouble in a more rambunctious inn after this... I do enjoy getting my fists a bit dirty after a few tankards." Famina grins and, with surprising fortitude, drains an entire mug of mead in one gulp!
Wynn Monday December 19th, 2005 9:40:57 PM
Wynn greets Xenia as she returns from the catacombs. "I did" her replies, "There is a nice looking place just around the corner...but first we're going out to dinner with the rest of the Shields"
The bard sits next to Xenia during the meal and pesters her with questions about her surprise. "Is it bigger than a dwarven waraxe? Does it come with spikes? I know, Is it leather?" he asks suggestively.
Wynn does his best to disguise his discomfort when Ashalan presents him with the dagger, and simply nods his head at the man in recognition of the gift. He slips the dagger into his belt and hopes that Xenia does not take issue with Ashalan's generosity.
Finally as the meal winds down and Famina suggests some extra-curricular fisticuffs, Wynn leans in close to the rogue and whispers, "Why don't we slip over to the Inn and see what you bought?"
DM George Monday December 19th, 2005 10:27:07 PM
The group wakens to a new day. The sun comes out and is shining. The others wonder at the mysterious look in Xenia's eyes and the stupid grin on Wynn's face as he eats a huge breakfast. Xenia also seems to have a larger appetite. Larger than usual anyway.
Belkior heads off to services as the rest of the group prepares for the journey. (Please give spell lists) Angus finally herds everyone to the livery and finally make their way out of the city after a slow start.
The miles roll by and soon lunch and then dinner time pass by. As they get farther from the city the traffic lessens but traffic is still common enough. The wagon that they hired seems stout enough and the horses strong but they seem to be moving slower and slower as the day wears on.
The group comes to where they needed to turn off the road and cross country as the light fails. Looks like you will have a night under the stars. As you set up camp, Angus the navigator figures you have made it around three quarters of the way their. Travel by wagon is slower than expected or could it have been the hangovers that slowed everyone down from last night?
Are you keeping watch? Having a fire? Who gets stuck cooking dinner and washing the dishes? How are the horses being taken care of and bedded down?
Angus 22/28 HP Tuesday December 20th, 2005 10:12:45 AM
Angus stretches after the day of walking and wagon riding. "Not used to all this exersion. We it was nice to be out with nature and not have it attack us for once."
Angus takes time to inspect the dagger gift from Ashlan and comments "A very nice gift, that I hope never to have to use, but I am honored by the thought. We may have a place for you yet." Angus says with a sly grin.
Angus was happy to see the buddy system work during the journey and decided to try it for guard duty also. "Lang can you stoke the fire to keep it going. I think Belkior and I should take first watch and then we can rest to recover and spells that we need. Lets follow with Xenia and Wynn, then Famina and Syr and finally Lang and Ashlan. Lets turn in as we do not know what is in store for us tomorrow." Angus wraps his cloak tightly around him and pulls his floppy leather hat snuggly down as he prepares for his watch. Every 30 minutes of his watch Angus will walk 20 feet from the fire and cast light spell off into the darkness (one at each point of the compass over his shift).
Angus wakes in the morning and feels sore but finally recovered from the fireball. After a meager breakfast and comments to Lang and Ashlan "Lead on kind sires."
Xenia d20+16=34 d20+6=15 d20+6=23 d20+18=23 d20+13=33 Tuesday December 20th, 2005 12:15:31 PM
The white chemise is short with thin straps that draw the eye to the smooth dark skin of her shoulders. Short. It shows her bare midriff, hanging in soft satin folds down from the small hills of her pert breasts. Short, showing off that dark thin expanse of belly just above the matching satin panties, cute little panties with matching pink bows on both sides.
"You wanna take this off me?" She gives him a smoldering look with her green eyes.
That had been last night.
Waking up to make the Temple of Light with Belkie hadn't been a easy thing either. But it was worth the trip. Nothing like this in Dirt City. So big and filled with light. Nothing she's see in Floating City either.
Later, she walks down the road next to the cart. With a dark hand, she rubs the broad noses of the horses. They remind her of Ajax. At one point, she draws out the dagger, one of many given out by the Ash guy the night before. It's got her name on it now. She shakes her head. Some folks just don't get things very quick. Sometimes you wonder if they're just dense, or if they're ultra crafty and wanting to make you think they're dense. Maybe that move against the monk the other day was a sign. But, then again, he coulda done that on purpose too? He coulda set the whole thing up himself. No. That don't make sense. Based on what the Ashbeard guy said.
She puts the dagger away, tabling the matter for now. Patience. Vigilance.
Stopping off the road. The group makes camp off the road. The last time the rogue remembered spending the night out on the ground was in the Crying Woods, the time they had found Max the giant bug. Bralin had been with them then. And Gordo and Florin and Tionel. And, she has a distinct memory of the blood sucking vines that grew up out of the ground that time. Strapping on her goggles, she scours the ground around the camp. Fram jamble those blood sucking vines.
After that, the rogue draws out a thin wooden wand. With no more than two tries, she gets the intonation of the trigger word right and the Prestidigitation spell glows against her fingertips. With the spell, she flavors the evening meal with different tastes. Sharp cheddar cheese. Creamy mushroom soup. Fresh warm bread. And tart blueberries.
Xenia cleans the party's clothing. Rubs down the horses, cleaning and warming them. Finally, with the last of the magic, she warms a spot on the ground for herself and Wynn. Sleeping in the mithral armor ain't the most comfortable thing in the Wold. But in her bedroll, and Cloak of Comfort, at least it ain't cold.

The half-elf spends the day either walking ahead of the wagon, or propped up against the sideboard when it is his turn to ride. His mind repeatedly wanders to the previous night and the softness of the satin against his fingers. Only the odd jolt of the wagon's wheel as it traverses a pothole disturbs his reflections.
Wynn helps set up camp for the night and agrees to stand watch with Xenia. "As long as I get sufficient rest to recharge my own spells, the second watch will be fine" he replies to the thin mage. He spends a few moments scouting the perimeter of the camp before laying down where Xenia has prepared the ground. "Wake us when you need relief" he calls to Angus and Belkior".
The bard lies on his back and looks up at the stars, cradling Xenia's head against his shoulder. "Beautiful, isn't it?"

Syr d20+8=26 Tuesday December 20th, 2005 7:37:44 PM
The elf groans as Angus announces the watch order, "I hate the middle watch, no sound sleep before or after." He sighs and beds down with the rest of the group.
During the night, when the two of them are on guard duty, "What do you think of Ashlan, I mean who in their right mind would go for such extravagant self mutilation? I think he's trying too hard for acceptance. Give everyone time to get used to the new setup and people and we'll see the true person. Speaking of acceptance, how are you doing? Any questions that I answer?"
He keeps a very alert steady vigil throughout their watch (spot 26)
