The Future Waits for No One Tuesday December 6th, 2005 9:48:57 AM
Garret moves through the portal and about the village making sure all are aware of the need to be at the meeting with Karya.
Edgler and Dregar talk of home and home they came to be with the humans and what of the future they may have here.
Almost all are through with the purchases in the catacombs and have been assured by the staff in that wondrous place that the purchases will be ready within a day and delivered. All within the establishment seem extraodinarily interested in this land of ice and snow. It can be quickly learned that from the rest of the Wolds perspective not only is Ice Vein isolated, but the entire continent it exists on is virtually unknown and unexplored.
As twighlight begins to settle on the village, the evening star rises in the northeast, like a bright blue lantern held aloft upon a distant mountain peak. Aiden, Garret, Dregar, Neco, Bohdi and Edgler make their way to the cleared out meeting tent by the Domi Obelisk. Small fires dot the area where the men are gathering to warm themselves and keep warm during the night.
The group approaches and enters the dug out door wall. A great thick skin is pushed aside and the semi circular chamber revealed. A large fire burns low in the center and pelts and furs line the walls. a pair of thick wooden beams help brace the larger low ceiling and the floor is covered in yet more furs and other skins. Karya, the high priestess Svanhvit, Ull'As Bjord and Bjorn'Ursa all sit at the far side of the chamber. Tucked in a shadow to your left and right as you enter the sleeping form of two large white tigers can be seen. Near the far edge of the fire light are the personal guard of Karya and Svanhvit as well.
Catching your eye, Karya stands, her winter wolf cloak folding about her as she does. "Please sit and speak with us. I would hear your tale of what took place the past few days near the great wood."
Garrett Wednesday December 7th, 2005 8:39:30 AM
Garrett nudges Bohdi and whispers to him. "You are the best at the stories, you should tell it. But remember, be respectful please."
Garrett turns back to Kayra and waits for Bohdi to begin, hoping his thoughts are on the here and now instead of the wondrous magic contained through the portal.
Bohdi Nackle d20+4=10 Wednesday December 7th, 2005 10:11:10 AM
"Hm?" Bohdi blinked at Garrett's nudge. His head was clearly elsewhere, as the new gloves on his hands, the new wand in his belt, and multitude of new scrolls in his pack evidenced. He pocketed the pearl that he had been studying and cleared his throat.
(INT check 10--Bohdi's memory average, perhaps a bit spotty. No going back to check--doing this from my own, average memory!)
He scratched his head for a moment. "Yes, well, let's see .... Kayra, back before the village got demolished, when we saw you last, you and Svanhit there sent the five of us--Nauthiz'Ull, Frigg'Isa, Garrett, Aiden, and me--out on a mission to the Cave of the Ancients to follow a prophecy. It turned out that we were supposed to summon a group of people called the Blood Pack to aid us in finding something relating to that Fey King fellow."
"On the way to the Cave of the Ancients, the mountain far off in the distance exploded, and the ash that fell covered the village here. It covered us, too. As we continued our travels, we fought Bevroren Doden, the frozen undead. We made it to the Cave and followed the instructions that were written there in the High Woldian glyphs--following that book you gave me, Svanhit dear--" the gnome pulled a large, leather-bound tome from his pack and set it down at the shaman's feet-- "But a lot of bloody good it did us."
"You see, the prophecy caused some deity--Celsiun, I think--to snatch up Frigg'Isa. She sacrificed herself so that the rest of us could live. When that happened, the Bloodpack appeared. They were this group of adventurers from a place called the Sargrass Plains. They had come to help us fulfill the prophecy, and, um ... well, I knew one of them. Furtif Aeanora. She, ah, well ... ahem."
"Anyway, together with the Bloodpack we set out for Burfell and an ancient temple. We were caught in a massive blizzard for several days, but eventually we made it through. We reached the cave we had used for shelter on Burfell in the past and met some other travelers, one of whom, Mund, joined us for a time."
"When we finally made it to the temple, we found that it was a place of ancient necromantic evil. Skalti, our old companion, had become some undead creature of great power. Alongside the Bloodpack, we fought Skalti, undead trolls and wolves, and more. We eventually defeated them and explored the temple. Inside the temple, we found an iron ring that was somehow tied to the Fey King."
"With the temple cleared, we started out to return. We received yet another vision, however, and in it we learned that there were separate aspects of the Fey King--avatars--scattered throughout the Wold, and we were supposed to find the one that was located in the Vein and judge it, using these acorns of judgment that each of us had been given. The Bloodpack, too, had to find and judge an avatar, but theirs was back in the Sargrass. We came down from Burfell, returned here to the village, and set out again for the Cave of the Ancients."
"We had to bid farewell to the Bloodpack at the Cave, but along the way we encountered new companions--Neco here, and Edgler and Dregar over there--who had likewise received the vision of the Fey King and the acorns. They accompanied us to the mountains, where the iron ring directed us. Along the way, we were ambushed in the night by snow giants, but were able to drive them off."
"When we reached the mountains, we found a grove of extremely tall trees growing in the snows. A massive snow tiger guarded the place, but the Fey King's avatar, Fress, allowed us to enter. There was a tense moment as the avatar challenged us to fight him, but we chose to have a snowball fight rather than bare swords, which may have saved our lives. In the end, he consented to have us judge him and we each of us cast our acorns--of the six of us here, there were two votes each for live, die, and sleep."
"Fress sent us back here to the village using a magical ice slide. He had promised that he would open a portal here in the village to the Catacombs, and it appears that he was true to his word."
The gnome smiled. "And now I can finally continue my studies in a proper fashion! And so, if you'll excuse me, I have a number of scrolls to decipher ...." The gnome gathered his pack and readied to leave.
EdglerVess Wednesday December 7th, 2005 4:30:45 PM
The priest of Gargul stands behind the others and listens intently to Bohdi's oratory. "The little guy is a better speaker than he gives himself credit for, eh Dregar?" he whispers. Edgler can't help but wonder what the people of this town is going to ask of the IcePack next. Afterall, the leaders are all here, dressed in their finery. "Another quest is nearly upon us," he mutters to himself.
Aiden Wednesday December 7th, 2005 6:32:04 PM
Aiden smiled with the recounting of the tale. Bohdi had done an accurate job in describing what he (Aiden) could remember, actually, more accurate....
He watched the reactions of the elders from the shadows where he sat...
Neco Wednesday December 7th, 2005 10:11:54 PM
Neco listens intently as Bohdi recounts the story of the party's past adventure. She is very still, her eyes studying her ragged nails until he tells the part about the one who sacrificed herself for the party. The rogue/sorcerer looks up momentarily her eyes dark with unspoken emotion.
Dregar Thursday December 8th, 2005 1:53:33 PM
Dregar sits listening to the story his new friend tells. Some of it he knew, other parts he didn't, so some of it was a new story to him.
" Aye" he says to Edgler when he whispers to him. " Not bad at all."
Meet with the Village Elders Friday December 9th, 2005 4:28:12 PM
Karya listens intently to Bohdi as he recalls the past month out in the wilds with the group and how the three non Ice Peak villagers came to be where they are. Upon the sacrifice of Frigg'Isa Heimdall Karya and all the others reverantly bow their heads and say a soft prayer in the language of the ancients.
Ull'As Bjord and Bjorn'Ursa are both leaning slightly forward, very much interested as Bohdi gets to the part about the Bloodpack. Bjorn'Ursa having met them briefley nods at Karya and it seems a rather lengthy discussion just took place through mere eye contact and a quick nod.
Through out the story, the High Priestess of Domi holds a finger to her temple, her head slightly bent and her eyes are closed.
The bodyguards stand impassively, faces in neutral stone as if not even hearing what is being said.
The tale ends and Karya holds a hand to stall the excited gnome. "You shall wait to be excused Bohdi." she says, her voice fairly neutral. "What you have said on the Sne Kjempe brings great pause to..." Bjorn'Ursa speaks then cutting her off, "This is not for the Austlanders, Karya. They..."
"I am the one who makes such decisions and I am aware of our customs and laws newphew. But they have all been shown Ás-Domi uðr by Svanhvit and so may stay."
The man's head dips into a bow, his hands spreading outward in complete submission. Karya touches one hand and says "You did not know as it became clear to us only yesterday. Your honor is still yours Bjorn'Ursa 'As 'Isa Asgir." The man looks up and dips his head again. "As you say, Varr-uðr Karya."
Karya then turns her attention back to the group, "The Sne Kjempe have pushed closer to our border and several hunting parties have been attacked. With the discovery of the great wood, we are given opportunity to greatly shore our defenses. The great destruction wrought by the volcano has changed the face of the Ice Vein. New dangers roam the wastes, our village needs to be shored. You are not bidden to leave immediately, but soon." Here she stops and her eyes move across each of you seeking any with questions.
EdglerVess Friday December 9th, 2005 6:37:47 PM
The tone of Edgler's voice becomes much more 'official' sounding as he speaks, "Mistress Karya, may I ask what it is that became clear to you yesterday?" The dwarf has obviously had training in dealing with those of higher station.
Aiden Friday December 9th, 2005 9:51:30 PM
Aiden bided his time, "new dangers?" he queried. He was curious about what the fire mountain had done to other parts of Ice Vein. And then...."How much change occurred? If the beasts have changed their hunting, so too could those of Twin Tusks who feed off of the wyld animals..."

Dregar Saturday December 10th, 2005 3:43:34 AM
DRegar listens as Bohdi tells the story, and the return conversation. When Kayra seems to tell Bohdi what to do, Dregar's hand dips down to his axe. As soon as he realized it is nothing big, he pulls it away and sits, awaiting the answer to Edgler's question.
Garrett Saturday December 10th, 2005 8:56:20 AM
"I am not quite sure I follow. You want us to bring back trees? How do we move them and how many"
"Additonally, as news for the village in general, I have been able to use the portal that opened to the benefit of the village. I was able to purchase a large amount of firewood, about 50 days worth of wood for a family. After this meeting I will be able to get it as it's being loaded into a cart. The catacombs can be a great benefit for the village in hard times, being able to purchase food and supplies as needed."
Bohdi Nackle Sunday December 11th, 2005 3:37:12 PM
Bohdi's eyes rolled ever so slightly at Kayra's injunction, but one look at the stout bodyguards was all it took to convince him. The gnome resumed his seat with a scowl. He pulled a long scroll with arcane runes from his pack and began studying it.
He looked up and nodded at Garrett's words. "Well done, mate," he said quietly. "Jolly good show." He looked down with a wistful glance at the scroll in his hands. "Should have thought of that myself, instead of always thinking about bloody magic."
"But Garrett," the gnome added, a little louder. "I didn't understand her to mean that we're to be a bloody lumber supply company. It sounds to me like Kayra here plans on sending us chaps on a bit of a snow giant hunt. Isn't that right, Kayra love?"
Neco Sunday December 11th, 2005 11:04:39 PM
Neco stands at the back of the group listening to the conversation. The female human is in a state of deep thought as she attempts to sort out what is what.
Aiden Monday December 12th, 2005 6:55:30 AM
Aiden allowed a small smile to appear when he heard of Garrett's use of the portal. Though uncomfortable with the dealings with the shopkeepers, he had hoped that one of the others would investigate whether the Catacombs could be used in time of need.
Thin Ice Tuesday December 13th, 2005 9:15:20 AM
Karya nods at Aiden and his question. "New dangers of and harshest kind. The wolves and bears we hunt have all but vanished since the eruption in the East. While we have turned to the underground rivers to fish, the Sne Jkempe have turned to us and the other tribes."
To Garret she smiles, "You are truly an adult of this Village. If only ALL here were as concerned with the lives of thier family instead of thier own selfish desires. To this portal and these Catacombs, Svanhvit will divine our course. There are ancient laws and pacts that must be considered, Garret 'AS'Domi." As frowns crease the faces of those assembled before her, Karya continues, "Worry not, for one of the most ancient and powerful laws allows you as the victors on a field of battle to the rewards and honor of such, and thus any of you may freely enter without fear of retribution."
Looking to her nephew at this point, "You may proceed with your account."
Bjorn'Ursa nods, "Yes Varr-uðr Karya." He gazes then shifts to the group, stopping to focus on Bohdi for a moment before sweeping all of you. "Ull'As Bjord and I went into the northern hills when Ásbjörn and his trust failed to return from a hunt. We tracked them and found them. Set upon by a group of Sne Kjempe. The battle led us to where they had been taken. The Sne Kjempe had made camped, prepared and killed them. There was little left so we returned. Never have the Kjempe come so far and your tale removes further doubt. They will be coming and soon." With another nod to Karya he falls silent.
Karya returns the nod and then addresses the group, "You have met them in battle and are to be our spear. The Sne Kjempe are tribal and likey this is a single tribe, but also a sign of this time and what others may be doing. you are to be Ice Peaks voice in the wilds that none will find hunting here. Prepare as you know you must and then seek them out and destroy them." The village elder fall silent.
DM Note CC deliveries are made in game and will be done shortly.
Bohdi Nackle Tuesday December 13th, 2005 11:20:45 AM
Bohdi stared at the Ice Peak Village barbarians for a long second, as if expecting more.
"What, that's it? Prepare as we must, and move out?" The gnome looked down at the scroll in his hands. "But--but my studies--I'd need--I'd need at least a month! Maybe two! I've been waiting for an age to get new magical supplies, and now I've finally got them--and you--you--"
The gnome gritted his teeth. "Look, dearie, your typical barbarian rolls out of bed ready for battle, doesn't he? But it doesn't work that way with magic. There's preparation time. Study. Research. I need time. I'm no bloody good to anyone if I don't have a chance to prepare."
He pointed to the scroll in front of him. "I'd need two weeks, minimum, just to decipher these new writings. And another two weeks to transcribe them. Plus more time to create the disposable, one-time use scrolls that I'd need to properly confront the snow giants. I'm not saying that I won't help defend the village. But I need this time if I'm to help effectively."
"Two moons. No less."
EdglerVess Tuesday December 13th, 2005 12:43:57 PM
"Bohdi," the priest intones. "Little of what you said made sense to me, but I understand that the time required is important to you. If you are worried about your effectiveness, I watched you control and run off two of these giants singlehandedly." Edgler continues to the others in general, "This tribe of giants has committed a horrible act and they must be punished, and swiftly. I understand them to be nomadic, coupled with the fact that they are now looking for human flesh means we have little time to spare. Once we have completed this task, the other tribes will learn what will happen when they confront our peoples."
Edgler then looks to Karya, "If I am wrong, and we have the time that Bohdi requests, then I will back down. There is plenty to do in this village that will keep me busy. You know these creatures far better than I."
Dregar Tuesday December 13th, 2005 3:16:11 PM
" Maybe that is because Magic is weak " Dregar says as he steps forward. " You need two months to prepare for what I can do with this in a few days." he says as he pats his axe. " When I was a child I used to hunt with me father and me brothers and kill snow giants. Hell, when they attacked us you took all the fun away by making them run. I wanted to split theire skulls."
He stops as if pondering an old thought. " Have you ever ate Snow Giant Brain Stew? It's good, but it cost a lot because you have to kill so many to make one portion." he says with a wierd smile.
Dregar turns away from Bohdi, and looks to Edgler. He nods in respect to Edgler and then turns to Karya " My axe is yours. My body is yours. And many dead giants wll be yours." With these last words he bows down, putting his axe in front of him. While down he whispers. " My only asking is that I get the brains so I can show Bohdi how good they are."
Garrett Tuesday December 13th, 2005 4:16:20 PM
Garrett nods with respect as Karya praises him, and then sits listening to his friends speak their minds. After a few minutes Garrett speaks quietly and carefully.
"Bohdi my friend, you possess quite an array of skills for different occasions. Do not talk down your abilities, because in doing so, you talk down mine. Were it not for you I would not have survived the battle for the ring of Jack Frost.
If we do nothing after being attacked by The Sne Kjempe, they will see it as a sign of weakness and return. Perhaps even to the village itself. This cannot be allowed to happen, the lives of these people will not be put to risk when there is something that can be done about it. We must seek them out and destroy them, sending a clear message to all the other tribes that should their raids come to our door, they will pay the ultimate price after we come to their door.
There will be time for your studies soon Wunjo, but that time is not now. You would not have us go after them without you would you? Unless you have something you need that you can prepare in a day, we should leave in the morning."
Garrett stands and speaks to Karya and Bjorn'Ursa. "I need to begin my preparations. We should likely be leaving in the morning." Garrett looks around to see if there is any dissent before continuing "I thank you for allowing us this honor."
Garrett looks at all his comrades and thinks to himself that the the The Sne Kjempe will not have long to regret what they have done. Then turns and returns to his tent so that he may begin packing his gear.
Neco Tuesday December 13th, 2005 8:55:48 PM
"Bohdi, I know magic well. If there is anything I can do to help you with your 'studies' I will be willing to help you at any time. I can understand the time it takes to decipher scrolls is long; having used them several times myself." Neco moves closer to the gnome to look at the scroll in his hands.
Aiden Tuesday December 13th, 2005 11:41:03 PM
Aiden listened as the new quest was laid down by the elder. There was a slight hint of resentment as the intimation of him not 'contributing' to the welfare of the village by purchasing items rankled him the wrong way.
He was a tracker, and defender...not a lumberjack, or a woman to cover the needs of the others **. He had suggested to the others that the portal could be used in time of need, but surely the elders had thought of that!
Aiden did put some control upon his anger and resentment, and then listened to the quest as was given by the elder.
After a few moments of thinking, he looked over towards Bohdi, "You are right and wrong Bohdi. A barbarian warrior needs to hone his skill and work his magick with the blade as you with your words and ....materials. But your magic is rare among these people, and to cast you out onto a journey without enhancing your knowledge would be wasteful."
He took a moment, "I agree with friend Edgler...your encantations have shown themselves to be quite...effective. But, if you need to stay and study, then do so. Once you are done, then catch up with us..."
Frowning, he hated speaking this much, "Bah...but this barbarian tracker speaks too much...and needs to learn how to jump out of bed quicker for battle." The last part was said with a completely straight face.

Islands Unto Themselves Wednesday December 14th, 2005 3:10:35 PM
Karya forehead furrows, her eyes narrow and her lips tighten. Her steely gaze locks onto Bohdi. Ull'As Bjord puts a hand to her shoulder, an act designed to calm as he speaks, "Adults they may be, but there is much for them to still learn. Patience with them." The withering look the Weapon Master recieves from her might have slain Celsiun himself. Karya stands without a word, her face still locked grim in stone. She strides over the fire is gone into the night her guard breaking through the group in efforts to catch her.
Long cold silence follows her departure, the two other men exchange a long stare, before Ull'As Bjord exhales slowly and starts to turn his eyes to Svanhvit. Her raising hand stops him before he re-draws a breath.
"Leave us." her voice is calm and even, but the authority in the command is unmistakable. The Weapon Master and Karya's nephew are quick to obey. Soon after they depart the High Priestess of Domi opens her ice white on blue eyes and passively looks into each face about the fire.
"You must understand you are adults now and the thinking of children is past. There is no 'these people'. This is not 'the village'. We are our people as you are. This is our home as is yours. This you must understand above all else. Without it, you will surely die." Svanhvit reaches to her side and takes a sip of a hot steaming liquid from walrus tusk mounted on a small rock base.
"Bohdi, you must quickly learn to think and then speak when in from of Karya. Until you marry her you can not use such familiar phrases. Were the guard not deaf, you well may be dead or truly wishing you were." her voice and face are extremely serious, but there is also the tone of true concern.
"Aiden, you mis read the words my proud tracker, my brave defender. It is well known you are not a woman to cover the needs of others." How she knew the thoughts is unknown, but her smile reveals her complete amusement in them.
"Garret, I am proud of you and look forwards to when you assume my place for OUR people. All you do is lead by 'AS Domi, be true to that and I shall remain proud."
"Dwarf Dregar, my people welcome you and perhaps soon we will count you among us"
"Dwarf Edgler, I can only think you were lead here as well, perhaps Domi wishes us to expand our learning. You are free to move among my people."
"And you my young child," she says lastly looking at Neco. "I trust your journey to us is complete and you will not backtrack."
She pauses again and takes another sip, "My young brave warriors. there is no need to leave on the morning sun. The Hunter and Master did not return with giants chasing them. The Sne Kjempe are not camping just beyond the ruins of Icepeak. Karya has said 'prepare as you must' and so you should." She smiles and again looks at Bohdi, "But do not endager your family by taking too long."
"Is there more you would ask, any of you?"
EdglerVess Wednesday December 14th, 2005 10:45:46 PM
"Thank you, Svanhvit," Edgler replies. "For the honor you have bestowed upon me." Edgler then turns to the rest of the Ice Pack, "The elders, in their wisdom, have said that we have time before we need to attack these 'snow giants'. What say you?"
Garrett Thursday December 15th, 2005 8:21:01 AM
"As was said, we may take the time that is absolutely necessary. I am ready to go. It is up to Bohdi how long he absolutely needs."
Garrett turns to Bohdi. "Is there anything you can accomplish in a relatively short amount of time Wunjo? I understand your need for time is great, but we just do not have much. Is there anything we can do to help you prepare?"
Bohdi Nackle Thursday December 15th, 2005 9:49:49 AM ooc: sorry in advance for a long post!
The gnome regarded his scrolls and the tension left his face as Garrett spoke. Where a moment before was stubborn defiance, there was now thoughtful consideration. "No, there's nothing you could do in the preparation process," Bohdi replied, one hand stoking his goatee. "But I suppose I could forego the scrolls for now ... and some of these spells could wait until later, I suppose ... yes ... I might be able to make that work."
Bohdi looked up at the others. "I might be able to be ready in eight days--ten, perhaps, at the most. It won't be everything, but perhaps it will be enough."
The gnome turned to the shaman. "Svanhit love, you offered to answer questions. I'm not of these wilds, and so these snow giants are little more than legends to me. If we're to prepare for an attack on them--or to defend ourselves--then we'd be well off to know more about their tactics, their habits, and their forces."
"How are these snow giants organized? How large are their battle groupings? How do they prefer to attack, where, and when? Do they prefer a particular type of terrain, or tactics? What are their movement habits, their tracking skills, their intelligence level? What are their preferred foods, their social and combat hierarchies, their degree of technological and magical advancement?"
Bohdi looked at the others. "There are warriors here far more capable than me. While I am preparing myself magically, I recommend that some of you sit with Svanhit and the village's elder hunters and rangers to learn as much as you can about these creatures. If we are to confront them, let it be on our terms, and at a time and place of our choosing."
"When you have learned as much as you can about the creatures, let us also study the terrain that we are likely to cover. There are advantages and disadvantages to combat that takes place in the hills, on the ice, or in the woods. Again, we should be the ones to choose the field of battle, not them."
"And then we should discuss tactics amongst ourselves," Bohdi continued. He glanced at Neco. "You and I are likely to support the others in combat from a distance, for example. And yet, I could not help but notice that you are very adept at locating an opponent's weak spots when you fight. Catching your opponent unaware would help you, would it not? We can work on tactics using illusions to help you accomplish that--I can cast spells that would permit you to attack from concealment, for example--or we can plan to pair you with other fighters, to flank your opponents and deal the most damage."
Something was stirring and building inside Bohdi, it was clear, and now he began to speak more fervently. "All of these, and more, are things we should consider as a group. If we are to become a fighting force together, let us be more than a collection of individuals. We have seen how effectively the Bloodpack fought--together, they were greater than the sum of their parts. Let us be a pack! The Ice Pack!"
He paused to hear what the others might say. When the time for group discussion had passed, Bohdi made his way over to Garrett and spoke privately with the priest. "Garrett, it's clear to me now that we are to be fighting force for the village. Every force needs its leader. Garrett, you need to be that leader for us."
"Look, I'm no bloody good at this sort of thing," the gnome explained in a quiet voice. "I know myself--at least I have that much wisdom--and I'm no bloody leader of men. With Nauthiz'Ull staying here in the village, that leaves just you and Aiden from the original group of wunjos--and ... well, I like Aiden, really, but he's too quiet and reserved to keep this band together."
"You're going to have to do it. You'll need to tell us when to go places, how to march, what orders to follow in battle--your word will decide for all of us. A moment's hesitation or indecision could prove fatal--we'll need your strength, and your wisdom. Do you understand?"
To everyone, Bohdi added: "I'm going to go begin my studies. Here are the spells I've purchased from the Catacombs. It takes me a day to study each spell. If I master the text, it takes me another day to copy it into my spellbook. If we're to take eight to ten days to prepare, that's four or five spells, maximum."
"Here are the spells I plan to study in the coming days. If anyone has better ideas, let me know."
ooc: Here is Bohdi's proposed order of study. I'm serious about seeking input on the priority of spells--if anyone has better ideas, let me know either here IC or OOC by e-mail. Remember that he will have one scroll only of the spells he does not transcribe.

Dregar Thursday December 15th, 2005 2:04:25 PM
Dregar nodded when his name was mentioned, and took the compliments with a bow. When the meeting was over he made his way over to Edgler, to see if he needed any help tending to the village.
Small Litany's Thursday December 15th, 2005 8:35:54 PM
Bohdi takes full advantage of Savnhvit's open ended statement and does indeed have a few questions. The fire crackles and the high priestess listens.
"I can answer some of your questions, but as I am not a hunter, I can not answer all of them."
"Snow giants are a tribal group and from what I know hunt in small parties of 2-5. They are not very bright and aside from thier terrible strength, I do not know of any tactics as we may know them. I do know they are nocturnally active and eat almost anything they can kill."
"From your own sory of their reaction to an illusionary creature which i doubht even lives in the Ice Vein, I would say their experience with magic to be almost nothing."
Here she stops speaking, "That is all I could really tell you. The hunters, such as Aiden probably no more than I have just said." I suggest you get some sleep. Tomorrow is fast approaching and at least one of you has a great deal to do over the next several days."
With a nod of her head, the two remaining men step to the exit and pull back the thick skins.
Garrett Thursday December 15th, 2005 11:44:42 PM
In response to Bohdi's questions of Svanhit and statements. "Wunjo, you should see yourself as you are seen by your friends. None of us thought to ask those questions, nor have we thought to make a general set of battle tactics, as useful and helpful as they are. Your magic may be very good, but no better than your insight and thoughtfulness. I will thank Domi himself that you are on our side, and part of this village...one of our people."
In response to Bohdi's private discussion regarding Garrett becoming the leader of the group. Garrett listens carefully to Bohdi's words and thinks hard upon them before responding. "I agree that we need a leader Wunjo, but I am not sure that I am that leader. You are the better speaker, and much more thoughtful regarding tactics. But if you believe that it is not within you I will accept that." "I would consider leading us if asked, but it would not be my place to suggest it to the others. Each man and woman here has his own free will, and only if all wish such a thing to be, shall it be." "For to be a leader of men, you must be respected, and I am not sure they all respect and trust me enough to do as I would say." "If I were to be leader, and to be responsible for the lives of us all....that would be a great responsibility. Should anything happen to anyone, it would be upon me. And to that end, they would all have to trust me with their lives, and I willing to be responsible for them......that is a very heavy burden my friend. Please let me think upon it some. If you wish to speak to the others regarding the matter, I would not object. But we would all have to agree upon the matter and what it entails."
Garrett changes the subject before getting to carried away in thought. "I also agree that we need some tactics. we will need to start working on those this week. I believe we can come up with a formidable plan. I also agree with your suggestion regarding learning as much as possible regarding the ice giants, and I will do so."
After Bohdi asks for input for his spells, Garrett suggests the following.
1. Blur (you may often be in a supporting role, and if we set up a defensive/offensive front line, having a spell to keep them from getting nailed as often will be invaluable. Especially now that we are going against giants who are susceptible to it.)
2. Scorching ray (A very good offensive spell)
3. Alarm (because we are now going up against the ice giants, we know they are nocturnal. I would rather have us surprise them during the day than have them surprise us at night. The more warning the better)
4.Web (A great spell that can slow down parts of a group of attackers to let them come in smaller waves. much easier to kill a few at a time, or to fight half the group first, and the other half several rounds later. Helps to stop the flanking and multitude of shots that a large group of attackers benefits from.
Garrett will then excuse himself from his friends suggesting that he is quite tired, and we all need a good nights sleep. He will then return to his tent to think upon all that was said before falling asleep. The next morning, Garrett will do as Bohdi suggested and try to start getting as much information from the hunters and warriors of the village as he can regarding the tactics and tendencies of the ice giants.
Aiden Thursday December 15th, 2005 11:48:17 PM
Aiden's gaze grew thoughtful with the elder's words, and then, when Bohdi spoke up, slowly stood up.
Aiden quietly, sternly, spoke "You spoke well...Wunjo..." He then gave a small smile and nod to the gnome.
He then nodded towards Garrett. "He is right..."
Aiden then went back to quietly listening to the others speak their minds.
Bohdi Nackle d20+12=29 d20+12=25 d20+12=32 d20+14=31 d20+12=31 Friday December 16th, 2005 11:35:49 AM ooc: I'm assuming that we should sketch activities for several elapsed days:
Off in his hut on the edge of the village, the fire pit smoking lazily from neglect, Bohdi Nackle perched on a tripod stool made of auroch-bones and peered at a scroll that was rolled out on the tilted writing desk in front of him. A pile of parchment and vellum scrolls lay scattered on the rest of the table and spilled out to cover the nearby floor, cot, and trunks. Lying amidst a tangle of alchemist tubes, bowls, and beakers were several packages of various dust, inks, fluids, and writing utensils, along with a larger package labeled simply, "Blank parchment." From atop his perch in the corner of the hut, the raven Squork watched the gnome with a curious expression in his black, beady eyes.
Bohdi was muttering to himself and tracing various sigils and runes on the scroll in front of him, turning at times to a large, leather-bound book that was opened to a blank page. He would retrace the same figures on the blank page, first with a fingertip, then with a dry quill that seemed to be serving as a bookmark in the binding of the heavy tome.
"Acribus ... acribus a dictis ...." the gnome mouthed aloud as his finger slowly weaved across the scroll's surface. He repeated the gesture in midair, brow furrowed, before placing his finger on the spellbook and tracing the figure again. "Flamnis acribus ... a dictis ... flamnis acribus a dictis." He nodded slowly, as if agreeing with something unspoken.
Squork cawed and crowed from the corner. "Corn?" Bohdi waved off the request without looking up and continued his patient tracing and retracing.
"Confutatis ... maledictis ... flamnis acribus a dictis, flamnis acribus a dictis, maledictis flamnis acribus a dictis!"
Suddenly, a spark shot out of Bohdi's upraised finger and flew across the hut, striking the smoldering wood and dung in the firepit. As Bohdi sat back, startled, the fire blazed back into life. Squork cawed and flapped his wings in fright and surprise.
A mischevious grin spread across Bohdi's face, and he tossed the bird a crust of bread that lay on the writing desk. "Flamnis acribus a dictis!" the gnome repeated, and cackled. The bird niftily caught the crust on the fly with his beak, and gobbled greedily. Soon it joined the gnome's cackles. As the snow swirled outside, the only signs of life from within the hut for many days were the trail of smoke from the smoke hole in the hut's roof, the cackles and exclamations of the gnome, the cawing of the bird, and sudden flashes of arcane and mysterious lights that would punctuate both night and day.

EdglerVess Friday December 16th, 2005 10:44:32 PM
Edgler spends the first night in the town looking for this 'ice wine' that Bohdi promised him. Hopefully, he will find a couple of comrades who are also willing to partake. The dwarf is not above a friendly drinking contest.
The rest of his stay in the village will be similar day after day. Dusk and dawn will find Edgler immersed in his daily prayers done outside on the edge of town. Any villagers interested in knowing more about Gargul will be welcomed. He is also happy to bless any newlyweds trying to get pregnant. As is the duty of any good priest of Gargul.
The rest of his days are spent in hard labour. With the help of Dregar he will tirelessly help people clean up their homes and their town. Each day he will give a different family his services.
On occasion he will bring a platter of food to Bohdi and Squork. It also serves as an excuse for the priest to check that the gnome isn't overdoing his studies.
Neco d20+5=15 d20+3=16 d20+8=16 d20+8=11 Sunday December 18th, 2005 10:11:07 PM
Neco pays as close attention as she can to the long conversations that occurred in the tent that day. She is familiar with the events that occurred since her arrival, but the Ice Pack's rough past still eludes her.
In order to better know her new friends, the young woman tries to accustom herself to their style of life. Neco spends her days of rest exploring the village and learning what she can of the area.
Listen 15 Gather information 16 if getting information means Neco will need eavesdropping Hide 16 Move silently 11)
In the nights Neco will sleep under one of the many public tents while her familiar spends his on the hunt for small animals.
On the day of parting, Neco sorts through her pack removing everything and organising the items into neat piles; tools, food stuffs, and sleeping gear. As if checking off an imaginary check list she points to each object and mumbles out its name and than repeats this process while placing everything back into her worn old backpack.
Dregar Sunday December 18th, 2005 11:52:12 PM
Dregar spends the days helping Edgler with the village. His muscles ache throughout the day but he continues to help knowing these people need it. At night he joins Edgler with the drinks, or finds himself walking around the town getting to know everyone. Not really speaking to any of his new friends, he also makes sure to talk to them to get to know them better. He even makes sure to sleep in the same tent as Neco to get to know her better.
Before dawn comes Dregar makes his way outside of the village and watches the son come up. His mind races back to his childhood and his home vilage. A tear rims his eye as he stares at the tundra as it is lit up by the sun.
Days of Preparation Monday December 19th, 2005 8:00:31 AM
Note: we have several days to cover, you can stretch out posts to cover large blocks of time if you wish. I need updated character sheets from some of you still.
With evening setting the party makes to one of the group shelters that has been quickly erected. These ice buildings are serving as temporary structures for eating and sleeping while the village is repaired and rebuilt. Bohdi is unable to go to his own hut, like almost every other structure in the village, it no longer exists. When Bohdi, and the rest gather for the evening, the other 5 men give hearty greetings to all. The low ceiling dugouts are about 40' long and 15' wide with a small compartment room at the entrance to help hold out the cold. Running almost the entire length of the room is a low burning fire pit of glowing coals. Whale oil burns in translucent nautilus shells embedded in the ice walls to throw greater light about. Warm meats and drinks are passed around and the group is greeted by the men inside. Over the next hour or so, more trickle in seeking warmth and soon enough there are 20 people and the body heat mixed with the low embers, create a warm and rich felt environment. Neco is the only female here, but not the only one in the village helping rebuild
The men are pleasant, talkative and in fairly good spirits despite the devastation to their home and the hard work to rebuild. Dregar and Edgler both note their attitudes are very dwarf like. If nothing else , Ice Peak is full of a practical, resourceful people who do not easily yield to hardship.
Most everyone in the party is interested in learning more of the Sne Kjempe, because while Garret, Bohdi and Aiden are all adults of Ice Peak and seen as equals, they have also just recently attained that title.
"Ah the Sne Kjempe," one man starts, a younger, but respected man by the name of Uller, "The snow giants. They are powerful, but cowardly. I have already heard you have met some and that you still live means you have some knowledge and skill." He pauses to take a great drink, "but they grow more brazen as the food leaves the crags. They move in larger numbers, are using missile weapons and..."
A voice bellows across the fire from further down the chambered room. "Bah!" All heads turn and fire flares in Uller's eyes at being cutoff. Leaning into the fire light is an older man, one of the oldest in the village by almost any count. His name is Fjord Åsigr and his reputation is shall we say a mix of madman and all knowing. No matter what any may think, they all sit back, including Uller to hear the once proud hunter speak.
His voice, like his darkened and almost leather face cracks as he speaks, his eyes alight in distant memories of long past glories. "Sne Kjempe run only at night young ones. They move upon swift and silent feet when they wish and strike from the darkness with blows that can shatter rock. What Uller said is true, they are easily startled, but not so easily slain. Their holes are dark and deep and their appetites grotesque and unrelenting. Their evil and pitiful existence knows no joy. I have seen their holes where they gather, small clusters of pestilence upon the land. I counted no more than a score in every hole I ever encountered. When hunting they move in smaller groups, a handful only 3 to 5. Foul hateful things they, Karya is finally taking steps." He quiets down and a hush falls about the room.
I am going to put 6 days come and gone.
The following are some generalities about Ice Peak. The village itself is descimated. Aside from the structure you met Kayra and Svanhvit in and 3 of the low dug outs where everyone is sleeping there is not much around anymore above the surface. The days are spent digging with axe and pick through several feet of hard snow, ash and ice. To this point no excavated building survived the ash fall. Many walls still stand, but the roofs collapsed under the massive weight of the ash fall. Talk about the village is only a few buildings are to be tunneled into, which does seem to be the case. The village will then be constructed entirely a new right on top of the ruins starting with the walls. There are about 50 men and a dozen women in the village. The rest of the population is still in the caves to the Southwest. The mood of all is somber but very determined as the long hard days moved along. The daytime temperature is steady near 0 with the night pushing it to -15. With the thick winter gear everyone wears and the fact that all are natives to the land of Ice, this is not dangerous though it is by no means comfortable. Especially without the normal 8' windbreak wall that surrounded Ice Peak. Now only about 3 feet high, a constant 5-10 mph wind blows across.
Edgler- the hard working men and women at your side during the day speak little to conserve strength and body heat. The evenings are much more relaxed and the dwarven cleric find many willing to talk about their views of Gargul, Domi and the rest, though it is very apparent they know little about the rest.
Neco learns of the rite of adulthood Garret, Bohdi, Aiden, Nauth and his sister Frigg recently undertook and survived, which apparently is not remotely assured by the would be initiates. She learns more of the great eruption when the Eastern horizon went black, a column beyond the sky lifting up only to fall several days later, killing many and burying Ice Peak. She learns of the Twin Tusk tribe, fierce half orc warriors and thieves without honor who have preyed upon Ice Peak and the surrounding area for ages. An unsteady peace exists in regard to the villages themselves, but any in the wilds are fair game.
Dregar learns much of the same things as Neco. He also hears about the 'Magik Ones' Powerful strangers who passed through shortly before the cataclysm. There is much talk about the Village being cursed by Celsium for helping them. Celsium is the Ice Peakers name given to the elements. The wilds, Ice and all about have tales tall and long about Celsium, some claim supernatural creature, others say power and still others say the land itself is aware. All agree Celsium is real, a presence of neither good or evil, not of Chaos or Law, it simply is.
Garrett Monday December 19th, 2005 9:27:00 PM
Garrett continues to help as needed be it healing or digging, every day, all day. Once a day Garrett casually checks in on Bohdi to see how his magics are going. The eagerness to go after the snow giants apparent in his manner.
Bohdi Nackle Monday December 19th, 2005 9:46:17 PM
Secluded as possible in the communal hut, Bohdi waved off the others. "M'busy," he muttered as he sprinkled special dusts and carefully traced inks over the parchment of his spellbook. "G'way."
Charming, as ever.
"Find out where the bleedin' buggers are likely to be," he called out to his companions' retreating forms. "And get a bloody map!"
EdglerVess d20=14 Monday December 19th, 2005 9:55:53 PM
After being run off by Bohdi, Edgler merely chuckles, "He should have been a dwarf."
Edgler continues working on behalf of the village and doing his prayers. He also does as the happy gnome suggests and speaks to Svanhvit about the snow giants' location and a map. He is also more and more curious about the 'magical group' that came through town before the cataclysm. He makes the rounds of various people who might know more about them, specifically if there were any dwarves with them.

Aiden d20=11 d20=3 d20=1 Monday December 19th, 2005 10:53:09 PM
Aiden comes out of the portal from the Catacombs shaking his head out of amazement, and confusion. Several times he attempted to step into the strange kiosk, but things just didn't feel 'right'.
The words and the description of magick was overwhelming. And the ranger, after his first attempts to grasp what strange oddities that were being described finally stepped out of the store. It was just too much to try and understand.
"I'd rather face the snow giants..." he mumbled to himself, "than to try and understand their words..."
And with that, he went about helping the village. He offered to do what he considered small tasks, such as hunting furry creatures, and then preparing their skins for gloves, blankets, as well as food.
A part of him wondered how the wolf pups were faring, but the chaos of trying to help re-establish the village soon took his mind off of things.
This also included serving on any patrols that would guard the village against the snow giants, but also those from Twin Tusks who may look towards taking advantage of the weakened Ice Peaks.
EdglerVess (Illegal 2nd) Tuesday December 20th, 2005 8:53:42 AM
The dwarven priest can't help but notice Aiden's problem with the Catacombs and he goes over to stand beside him. "I'd like to help you out with anything you might need in there, friend. But there is something that the two of us need to iron out first." Edgler makes sure that the ranger is looking into his eyes before continuing.
"I asked you once before where you got that weapon you carry. At the time, you didn't answer and that is fine by me. We had only just met and I thought that we would be together for only a short period of time. But now it appears that we will be going into battle together and I want to know 'who' has my back. You are the one in this group that I know the least about and that weapon causes me some great concern."
Dregar Tuesday December 20th, 2005 3:42:14 PM
Dregar spends the days helping Edgler with the village, and his nights drinking and talking with the men of the village and his new friends. He feels a bit releaved when he starts to drink and talk with them, as it takes his mind off of his family.
A Few More Days Tuesday December 20th, 2005 5:43:46 PM
A few more days
Garret checks regularly on Bohdi, and as the days go by, 'check on' begins to transform to 'bug'
Bohdi does his beast to ignore Garret and any others, but the interruptions are beginning to increase and concentration is becoming harder to maintain. (Increase DC's by 2 for all spell related items) On one occasion Bohdi is irritated, I mean interrupted by Edgler, and calls for them to get a map or the like.
Edgler continues about the camp, assisting where he can, which is easy enough as assistance only requires muscle and having mastered the concept of digging. Both of which Edgler has. His inquiries into the 'Magical Ones' give him some rather wondrous information. They were a mix of human, elf and yes a dwarf. They were brought to the village by a group of hunters who found the Austlanders freezing to death in the wilds South of the mountains. After regaining their strength, they helped fend off an attack by the Twin Tusks and then pursued the Tuskers to their base and forced the remainder to retreat. One of them, Bear-Talker, could transform into a mighty polar bear and used his magic to catch an Orca from the great lake. The village still has a good deal of the whale oil left because of that. The dwarf was simply As'Asig, god talker, and very powerful, having saved many of the Ice Peak villagers gravely wounded in the battle. Tokkun, led 'The Magic Ones' far to the south, past Zarnan City, where the Magic Ones said they could feel themselves being called to. That was the last any saw of them. As for a map, none exist.
Aiden uses the portal some more and goes on a hunt or two to help his mind calm down and the men he goes with seem glad for the company. "We have heard of your abilities, your father swells with pride with each passing day young one."
One one night Edgler corners Aiden again on the origins of the double bladed axe he wields, the favored weapon of an orc. Though the axe in Aidens possession is of the finest craftsmanship the dwarf has ever seen. Surely not forged by filthy orc hands.
Dregar dives into his work and occupieshis mind fully, a welcome retreat and surely better than dwelling issues far beyond his grasp or control.
One day,he portal to the catacombs 'pops' and a wiry man with several 'Floating Disks' moves though the village and delivers all catacombs purchases. (All items Approved, update sheets and return please if not already accomplished.)
Bohdi Nackle d20+14=24 d20+12=18 Tuesday December 20th, 2005 8:44:58 PM
Bohdi felt flustered by his companions' interruptions, but continued with his preparations. (Reroll for Blur, DC 18 = 24, success; reroll for Protection from Arrows, DC 18 = 18, success--barely!) He struggled mightily to hold his focus sufficiently to finish the deciphering of his last selected spell, but ultimately prevailed, and in the evening of the tenth day emerged from the communal tent looking haggard, weary, and drawn--but clearly happy.
"Right," he announced. "Where to?"
Garrett Tuesday December 20th, 2005 9:18:55 PM
"We leave in the morning. We should go to where the hunters last tracked them to, and begin from there."
"Aiden, perhaps you can speak to them as you are the one most likely to be directing our movements toward our foe."
Neco Tuesday December 20th, 2005 10:28:42 PM
"Thank you", Says the auburn haired girl in delight as she retrieves her new item from the catacombs courier. Pushing back her cloak, Neco slips her new wand next to her other one, "Well I'm ready to go, but perhaps we should create a battle plan. Personally I fight best in close quarters."
Aiden Wednesday December 21st, 2005 12:09:43 AM
ooc: dag nabbit, apparently the firewall/network at the school ate my catacomb request....*sigh* suggestions?
"Thank you..." the ranger quietly murmurred to his fellow hunters. He very much enjoyed the hunt in the wilderness, avoiding the chaos of the 'civilization' that he had seen in the catacombs. Few times has he ever felt so awkward.
Aiden quietly nodded, "I shall speak to them..." and when he did have a chance, asked the hunters as to where the snow giants were located, or at the very least, last seen.
In terms of the axe, Aiden kept the eye contact. "Is it the man or the weapon that you question the trust?" he asked quietly.
After a moment, he answered, "The weapon was a gift for me passing into adulthood...given as a replacement for my first blade."
"As to trusting the man...few of this village trust me because I was not born here but in Twin Tusks. Beyond that, there is little else for me to tell that any one of the others could better tell."
By the way he said this last statement, it was not in the tone of avoidance, but more self effacing. Again, there was discomfort in speaking his words, but there was also something else. The proud ranger appeared, at least momentarily, embarrassed as his gaze shifted away (as if lost in a brief memory or thought). "I am simple enough to figure out...as the gnome said. Jump out of bed, Aiden smash, go back to bed..." a wry smile on his face.
(OOC: I believe I've hinted that he has a definite accent that is different than those of the village. Out of curiosity to the gm, because of his origins, would there be a stronger 'growl' in his pronunciations due to the prevalence of orks in his home village?)
Garrett (Illegal 2nd) Wednesday December 21st, 2005 9:29:56 AM
"You are right Neco, I forgot about tactics. When it comes to melee, i think that our three main combatants should form a defensive/offensive line. Myself in the middle for emergency healing should either Aiden or Dregar go down. Aiden and Dregar to either side of me. If there are 4 or less melee combatants I think we should stand side by side for better defense and being able to swing without moving. Should there be more than 4, I think we should stand with a 5 foot gap between us to take up more area and prevent them from getting back behind us."
"EdglerVess should be directly behind the front ranks providing spells against our opponents and healing to the front three should they need it."
"Neco is probably best suited to move where needed, flanking and taking opportunites as they present themselves on either edge of the line. Neco will also need to watch for any opponents trying to go around the line, and prevent them from getting to Bohdi. Fighting completely defensive if necessary until one of the front line frees up, or edgler is able to join you in taking him down. Edgler will also need to watch for this."
"Bohdi, you are obviously not suited to hand to hand combat and should avoid it all costs. You should be in the rear, behind Edgler, making the best use of your spells and magic. You know your magic best, and it will likely be at your discretion what you use, unless something you know is requested. If there are more than 4 opponents, any spell you have that could slow or stop parts of the fighting force would be best used first. If they don't come at us en mass, the battle should go much better."
"We should try and form up a line first, and make them come to us. We do not want to be charging after them, with different people arriving at different times. Should they not want to engage immediately, and start off with missle fire, then we will need to make them want to attack by outdoing them at missle fire and ranged spells."
Garrett stops talking and realizes how much he just said, and looks a little sheepish. "Sorry, didn't mean to be telling everyone what to do. I was just thinking upon battle tactics the last few days. The mind occupies itself while the body labors."
Bohdi Nackle (illegal 2d) Wednesday December 21st, 2005 10:07:29 AM
"Works for me," Bohdi affirmed. "And remember, when we're facing creatures like snow giants, it's best to focus on and bring down one opponent at a time, rather than spread our attacks over a larger group. We may find that Edgler and Neco will both want to contribute on the flanks against these large creatures. And wherever and whenever possible, we should take advantage of our size differences--seek terrain that will provide cover for us, but not for them, and so on."
"And jolly well said," Bohdi smiled at Garrett.
EdglerVess Wednesday December 21st, 2005 3:07:55 PM
"Well, Aiden, I am content to leave it at that," dwarf says. "I like to judge people by their actions and their words." The dwarf pauses, then looks back up at the tall ranger. "You'll have to understand that my people have been fighting a losing battle against orcs for a very long time. I've even lost both my parents to orcish necromancers. And now I see a young man using a weapon I have fought against many times before. My people have gone so far as to brand that particular weapon as being 'dishonorable'. But I am not in Turak Nor any longer," he sighs. "So I must try to look at things from other sides."
The dwarf turns to leave but seems to have a second thought. He hurriedly tries to smooth down his normally neat red hair then attempts to clean his hands on his breeches. He turns back to Aiden and, almost reluctantly, extends a rough, calloused hand.

The group has decided that tomorrow they will push into the western wastes and further then into the crags, snow giant territory. No one has encountered a snow giant to date any closer thegroup did a couple weeks ago when they were tracking the Avatar. The last day comes to a close and night falls with the evening meal.

Dregar patiently waits for them to set out. He makes sure his axe is sharp, as well as the two Kukris in his boots. he makes sure his clothes are set and his armor is in the right place to protect him. He looks over his beard for any stray hairs and twists them into the other braids. He scans up at the sky( Surv 11+5=16). Even though it was cold, his clothes should suffice he thought. Nothing new that he has not dealt with.
Garrett Thursday December 22nd, 2005 9:31:01 AM
Garrett gets everyone together unless they already are at some point during the evening.
"I purchased the rod like the bloodpack had. I am going to use it and three endure elements each day to keep us all permanently protected from the cold. Starting now, and then casting three more tommorow morning and each morning there after will keep us permanently protected. The cold is too deadly a variable to take chances with when we have the ability not to."
Garrett then casts Endure Elements upon three of the group, and will do the next three tommorow morning, and rotate back and forth each morning.
"I think that we should also discuss a group leader. Bohdi brought it up to me recently, and I agreed that we should have one. Bohdi felt that I would be well suited to lead us. I would be willing to take on this responsibility, but only if everyone agreed. No one can be led unless they respect and trust the leader. I guess I just wanted to throw it out there, and see what you all thought. See if someone else wished to take the responsibility of leading our group."
Garrett waits to see what everyone has to say.
After everything has been discussed, Garrett will return to his tent and begin packing up. He will place a good supply of wood in the bag of holding so that we should not lack wood if we need it. He will also place the wooden case filled with ice wine in the bag of holding, as well as his two winter blankets, bedroll, rope, rations, tent, and two sacks.
Bohdi arrived at meeting sniffing the air. "Doesn't smell like snow to me," he said half to himself. "But then, what do I know?"
The gnome glanced over at Edgler. (Sense Motive, untrained 10.) "You look a mess. Here." He twiddled his fingers and the dwarven cleric was magically cleaned (cast: Prestidigitation). "Anyone else?"
Bohdi listened to Garrett's speech and smiled. "Garrett, wunjo, you've got my vote--and my confidence," Bohdi said. He glanced nervously at Aiden and added quickly, "Not that others couldn't do just as good of a job, of course, er ... ahem."
The gnome turned to his other companions. "My lady, gentlemen, Garrett makes an excellent suggestion regarding the spells against the elements. I'd point out, however, that at least three of us can cast such spells--Garrett, Edgler, and myself--and if Neco can as well, that's four. Garrett, you don't need to carry the burden of casting all of those spells each day, if it would make sense for you to ask for divine providence for other, potentially more useful spells."
"I'd also note that some of us--Aiden, and possibly Dregar--seem very well equipped indeed to handle the elements even without magical assistance. There may be no need to cast a spell on them. Garrett, would it make sense to take a wait-and-see approach with them? It's your choice, of course--I'll cover myself with a similar spell each day, so no need to cover me. And I'll have the capability to cast an emergency spell on someone else during the day as well, if the need arises. Aiden, perhaps your familiarity with nature will give us a sense of what to expect from the elements on the coming march, hm? You and Nauthiz'Ull always did that so well for us in the past."
"While I'm on the subject of spells--it's time to think strategically as a group again. I can prepare one or two incantations each day to summon an invisible servant. On our last march to the crags, I used that servant to cover our tracks. I'd recommend doing something similar again this time. And as need be, Squork can serve as an aerial scout to watch for signs of the snow giants. Agreed?"
"Here are the spells I'll prepare for our first march--if anyone else has better ideas, let me know now."

Things are slowing as we hit the holiday in force. I will likely post tomorrow, giving the others mmore time.
Aiden d20=4 Thursday December 22nd, 2005 6:23:20 PM
ooc: missed the survival roll...
((ooc: didn't have a chance to reply to Edgler before))
Aiden looked at the hand strangely. This was the first time where someone, at least from what he could remember, offered their hand in 'friendship'. His calloused hand, also tentatively, took Edgler's and gave a firm shake.
"I too know of what raiders can do...." his voice spoke in very low, barely audible tones.
------------ Aiden was quietly listening to the others speak, allowing his senses to lax momentarily. "Right now, you shall lead..." Aiden responded gruffly to the question of leadership. Aiden did not want the mantle of leader, but also realized that there will be times when others, due to their expertise, should take the role of leader.
<tags>
"What can this ...servant ...do?" Aiden queried.
EdglerVess Thursday December 22nd, 2005 7:37:01 PM
Edgler said what he had to say to Aiden and that was enough.
Later, Edgler tried once again to fix his beard and hair to no avail. Without a good bath there was little he could do. He still took a comb to his hair and did the best he could. Despite his efforts, he mumbled something about how Master Doran would be disappointed in him. He put on his new breastplate, beautifully engraved with the Eye of Gargul, picked up his fine dwarven waraxe, then went to join the others.
As he approached, he was still trying to fix a braid....then Bohdi hit him with a spell. Not just any spell! One that made him feel like a 'proper' dwarf one again. Dirt, ash, blood and food were gone. His long red hair and beard were now neat and braided properly...not a single hair out of place.
Bless the gods for Bohdi!!!!
"Ummm....uhhhh....I don't know wha....I mean...." he stammered.
"Thanks," was eventually all the poor dwarf could say.
As the talk turned to strategy and leadership, Edgler was able to concentrate once again. "I agree with Garrett's strategy. I'd also like to add that I think my Command spells could be effective against these rather dimwitted creatures. I'll give them a try and see how they fare. Those of you in the front rank, be ready to take advantage when they're prone. I'll try to time them so they drop right in front of you." "But as far as leadership is concerned," the dwarf's tone changed to one of more seriousness. "I don't know if Garrett is the right choice. And I mean this as no disrespect, I just have not had any experience fighting with him." Edgler turns to face him, realizing he is talking like the priest of Domi was even there. "I do not doubt your ability, my friend, but what I suggest is to give you the reins on a temporary basis. Let's see how you do. It is just not easy for me to accept an 'unproven' leader."
Neco Thursday December 22nd, 2005 8:50:28 PM
Neco frowns. "Hmm Leader eh? Well I'm all for organization and some one in control, but I have to say Garret, that I'm with Edgler on this one."
When the conversation changes to spells the young sorcerer happily adds in. "I can cast endure elements, but unfortunately only from the four scrolls I posses. Don't worry about me I bought them a long time ago so I could use them. I don't want to let them go to waste."
Dregar(Illegal Second) Friday December 23rd, 2005 3:11:27 AM
Dregar looks at the rest of the group. He admires the way Edgler carries himself. It is very good to see a dwarf who has some pride in himself. HE looks amongst the group and thinks for a second.
" I think that is a wise choice, to let him have the title in trial. I think in the long run he will do fine, but let us see how we all work with him as our leader, under pressure." he turns and looks to Garret, " I think you'll do fine lad."
Bohdi Nackle (illegal second) Friday December 23rd, 2005 2:20:03 PM
"Well, that's settled, then," the gnome declared. "Garrett, you're our leader on this mission--quest--thing." A Great Day for a Hike Friday December 23rd, 2005 4:37:25 PM
There is quite a bit of conversation upon the selection of leader, though in the end Garret seems to be the choice, at least for now. As the group makes final preparations the rest of the Villagers start in earnest with pick and axe against the unrelenting ice and frozen ash. The ever so pale sun begins continues its steady climb across the eastern horizon and the white blue sky begins to brighten to a vibrant blue.
Aiden takes the lead and the rest fall into sort order (Insert Garret's decision here) and the ranger blazes a trail west towards the crags and the rocky badlands.
As promised the weather is clear and very cold. The everpresent 5-10 mph wind brushes across the ground scattering loose ice crystals and reflecting the sun. Vision is going to be limited to several hundred yards this day, as it is most days where the wind finds you. Sounds of your cruching boots quickly fall away as the village fades into the white mist at your backs.

The dwarf is ready to march. Helping the villagers of Ice Peaks was a good thing to do, but the priest required something else to keep his mind fresh. Now, with a quest in his mind he is energetic and ready for some new experiences.
Unfortunately he is not paying attention to the route he is following and suddenly realizes that he doesn't have a clue where he is (Survival Untrained - 14). Thankfully, Aiden seems to have that situation well in hand. He decides that he is better off trying to watch for signs of an ambush, remembering what the villagers said about the snow giants' skill in that area.(Listen Untrained - 8, Spot 7)

Active Spells: Endure Elements upon everyone.
Responding to Bohdi's suggestion of waiting on the endure's or spacing them out among other people Garrett responds with. "With the battle plan being the way it is, I will be needing those lower level spells the least of anyone. Bohdi and Edgler, you are supporting the line and will need spells for more variety of situations. Since I will most likely be in the melee, I will be swinging and not casting. Addtionally, the rod only works well if it's set up to get each person every other day. If we wait til the weather turns bad, we can still only get the number of people for the prepared endures we have. Which is likely not 6. I am going with this plan and using my spells, at least until it seems that it is no longer a good idea."
Marching order. Aiden, Dregar, Garrett, Bohdi, Neco, Edgler. (Unless someone wishes to be elsewhere, this should work well.)
Garretts senses are apparently highly tuned trying to make sure that nothing is overlooked as we head out to face the giants.
Garrett stops as Aiden motions with his hand, scanning the area for trouble. Unless seeing or hearing Something after a minute or so, Garrett slowly moves about half the distance toward Aiden and says just loud enough for Aiden to hear "Everything alright, what is it?" (OOC: You made your survival check, you know where we are, unless there is something else)
Aiden Saturday December 24th, 2005 12:05:24 PM
Frowning, Aiden took a few moments, "Bad feeling...making sure we have everyone..."
Turning towards the dwarves, and Bohdi, he then added in a low voice (so that Garrett was the only one who could hear), "easy to lose the short ones in this...we'll need to keep close. Their eyes in the dark will be the most helpful for the watch.."
Bohdi Nackle d20=1 d20+2=8 d20+4=17 Sunday December 25th, 2005 10:55:15 PM
After casting an Endure Elements spell upon himself and Squork before setting out, Bohdi fell into his familiar pattern during a march--tromping, muttering, and cursing to himself. The larger companions always seemed to have it easier than he did: "One of these days I'm going to have to invest in snowshoes," he thought aloud.
Bohdi glanced about him only occasionally--the ice-and-snow-covered terrain of the Vein held no particular attraction for him, feeling as he did that he had seen it all already--and so his senses were not particularly attuned to anything but following the footsteps of the person in front of him. (Survival, untrained, natural 1!) Looking up at some point several hours into the march was the first time that he realized ....
"I have no bloody idea where we are." (Spot 8, Listen 17) Looking about him did no good to orient himself, although his keen gnomish ears were quick to listen to any noise that might appear on the wind.

One Day Down Monday December 26th, 2005 9:29:24 PM
Endlessly the group plods through the deep snow with a stinging cold dancing across any exposed skin. Aiden continues to lead the group onward. Midday passes, the group breaks into temporary shelters to break frost and gathering ice from thier gear.
The group pushes on and more hours of featureless white pass the group. Suddenly Aiden stops and dropping to a crouch he looks about. Garret wuickly moves up the line and takes the rangers council. 'A Feeling', the concern is noted and the group continues. None sence anything truly broken from the ordinary.
Evening approaches and Aiden calls the group to a halt, shelters are started as the purple haze of evening begins to lift from the east and the deep red orb of the sun drops below the western rim of the Wold.

Should nothing present itself or give any further hint of being near, Garrett will return to helping set up camp.
After a short while, Garrett will broach the subject of Endure elements again.
"Bohdi, since you cast Endure elements upon yourself and squork, I am assuming that you do not want it from me. that's fine. Does anyone else not want to be permanently covered? The rod makes it work best for 2 4 or 6 people because it can be used on a 48 hour basis roatating between two people. As I said previously(previous post) I don't mind covering everyone, and I think it makes the best use of resouces. I just think we should have a final decision here."

Bohdi was relieved to have the sure-sighted guidance of Aiden to lead them through the wilderness. "Ta very much," he mentioned appreciatively to the ranger as they broke for midday.
It having only been their first morning away from the village, Bohdi deigned not to use his Unseen Servant to cover their tracks before lunch. "We're not that far from the village," he explained to the others. "There's no sense in being stealthy just yet."
But as the group broke camp for the evening march, Bohdi summoned the clean-sweeping invisible force and put it to work erasing the signs of their passage (Cast: Unseen Servant). He showed what was happening to the others, particularly to Aiden. "If there's more that you think we should do to avoid leaving a trail, let me know. The fewer clues we leave for the snow giants--the better."
The group made camp for the evening once more. As usual, Bohdi set his Unseen Servant to work and used his powers of Prestidigitation to help to create a wind break from the snow and ice around the camp. "It'll shield the light of the campfire from prying eyes, too," he observed to his companions. "We need to keep those sorts of things in mind."
"Garrett, you're in charge, so you tell us what watches to set. If I could make a suggestion, however, I'd recommend that the dwarves and I be paired with you humans during the watches. That way--using the windbreak as a glare cover against the firelight--the dwarves can use their darkvision, and I can use my low-light vision, to improve our ability to spot trouble in the darkness. I suggest that I take the first watch, as usual, to get as much uninterrupted rest as I can."
"I'll also set an Alarm spell around the perimeter of the camp. The trouble with that is, it doesn't extend very far--only about 40 feet across, in total--and our snow giant friends have already demonstrated that they prefer to attack from range. I can only manage to set it for six hours at a time. I'll set it at the end of my watch."
(Will save 16, success) As Bohdi settled in for his watch, he heard the beat of leathery wings. "What's that?" he announced. "Everyone up and ready--I heard something. It sounded like--like wings!" Bohdi readied his Wand of Magic Missiles, cast a protective dweomer over himself (cast: Protection from Arrows--DR 10/magic from ranged attacks, max 30 pts.), and watched the darkness. (Spot nat 1!, Listen 10) But his fear clouded his vision and his rapidly thumping heart drowned out any further sound. He tried to determine whether there were any active spells at work in the vicinity. (Spellcraft check, 29 regular, 31 v. illusions)
If the group wasn't immediately attacked, Bohdi scanned the area with a Detect Magic spell, sweeping its 60-foot cone effect slowly around the camp counter-clockwise until he had viewed the entire area. If he spotted anything, he would cast his Message spells to unite the group in nearly silent communication.

Dregar d20=6 Tuesday December 27th, 2005 1:07:14 PM
Dregar plods along, smelling the fresh air of the tundra. To him the day passes by quickly, and eventually he is helping set up camp. When the camp is being set up, Dregar helps with whatever is needed. As he is setting up he hears a howl in the distance. he looks up to the horizon of the dark sky.
" Bah, its nothing" he says to himself. Then bohdi says he hears wings. Without asking, Dregar swings the axe off of his back and gets into a stance, ready for whatever comes out of the darkness.
Aiden Tuesday December 27th, 2005 3:19:27 PM
Aiden's tall form began to get up after the confirmation from Bohdi of the sounds in the sky. Pulling on his breastplate, Aiden began the chore of stringing his bow, slowly preparing himself for the possibility of combat. If there was to be combat, he would obviously work with his axe, but having the bow strung and ready in case the creatures decided to maintain flight would be prudent.

The shelters are erected and a small wall defelcts some of the direct light to the west from the two small warming fires at the entrances of the shelters. Garret sets the watches based on Bohdi's suggestion and the camp activity diminishes. A darkening cold settles across the land and while on watch one can not help but feel uneasy. Perhaps it is that you go to strike Snow Giants, creatures of terrifying power and strength. Perhaps it is still a haunting feeling from earlier, Everyone seemed to feel it, surely it was not group hysteria, but what?
The deep night passes and though the all on watch were on edge, no one is the worse for wear the next day. Edgler spends the night either snoring or chatting with whoever is on watch with him. (OOC: he would prefer last watch) In the morning he preforms his assigned camp breaking duties. He was a little concerned with everyone's apprehension the previous night, but was relieved to see the night pass uneventfully. He would much rather be the one on the offensive than waiting for something to happen. He will happily take his spot last in the marching order and tries to watch for ambushes from behind.
Neco d20+3=20 d20+1=7 Tuesday December 27th, 2005 5:36:59 PM
At the end of the day's march Neco sits by the fire warming the cold tips of her fingers. "It gets a little hard for me to see, the darker the day gets", the young girl shivers (Will 20). "I would like first watch if no one minds".
At night Neco looks to the stars to get her bearings and sighs deeply. "Yep were lost", she mumbles to herself (Survival 7) before setting herself to what ever task is needed of her for the preparation of camp.
Garrett Tuesday December 27th, 2005 9:51:42 PM
Garrett quickly ponders through the possibilities of a watch order. "Neco, I know you would prefer first watch, but I don't think that would be best. Neither you nor I nor Aiden can see well at all in the dark, so we are all at the same disadvantage there. Spellcasters should have either first or last watch so they can get the necessary sleep for their spells. Neco, you are the only one of us three humans who does not cast spells, so we are going to need you on the middle watch."
"Bohdi has always had first watch, and I am inclined to continue that. I think we should have one front line fighter and one non front line fighter on each watch in order to spread out our abilities more evenly."
"Bohdi and I will take first watch. Dregar and Neco, you guys have middle. And Edgler and Aiden, you have last. That leaves us with each watch having darkvision or lowlight vision, all spellcasters with either first or last watch, and a general balancing of abilities."
Garrett reaches into his bag and pulls out his everburning torch. "This should help each of us humans on our watches though. I bought it in the catacombs. It's a torch that burns bright like this forever, but doesn't give off any heat." Garrett passes it around for anyone that wants to take a look at it, and then collects it for first watch, then handing it off to Neco for second.
Bohdi Nackle d20=14 Tuesday December 27th, 2005 10:05:10 PM
Bohdi gazed sheepishly at his companions about the campfires. "Sorry," he said. "I guess I'm a little jumpy, since that last bout with the snow giants." He sheathed his wand and slumped back down to the snow. "Gods, but I could use some ice wine right now."
But he had sworn himself off of the stuff, he reminded himself. Ever since she left--so that he could be a better gnome when he found her ....
Bohdi interrupted his chain of thought to stare at Garrett. "Garrett, I think the snow is getting to you. Aiden is the only one of you humans who doesn't cast spells, remember? Neco here has demonstrated her natural abilities before. You meant for her to take the first watch with me, didn't you?"
If Garrett agreed, Bohdi used the opportunity to press Neco for some intelligence-gathering regarding the opposite gender. "Neco, could I ask you--what do women look for in a man? I mean--what should we do ... to make ourselves better? I know I may never see her again, but, if--I could find Flea--well--if I could, what should I do to make sure that she ... felt about me, the way I feel about her?" With such philosophical musing, the hours on watch no doubt passed quickly.
Before retiring, Bohdi cast two more spells--one, his Alarm spell to warn his companions of any intrusions on their campsite; and two, using his Pearl of Power to refresh his spell of Endure Elements, Bohdi cast the spell anew upon himself, so that he would not need to do so in the morning.
Upon waking, Bohdi prepared his spells as usual. (Survival, untrained, 14) He was oblivious as always to the necessities and vicissitudes of surviving in the wild.
"I'll use my Unseen Servant to erase our tracks again today," Bohdi announced. "Good for the first march, and I can renew the spell for the second march, too, if necessary."

Aiden d20=12 Wednesday December 28th, 2005 10:14:31 AM
Aiden was about ready to correct Garrett when Bohdi had already addressed it. Aiden was a human, and not a spellcaster....yet. His 'father' (and mentor) from Ice Peaks had aluded to the idea that once a tracker was experienced enough, he would gain almost magical like abilities.
Aiden didn't exactly believe that, but, being a servant and property of that man, it was not his right to ask.
The young man kept to himself, at least verbally, during the journey. He was not a bird, easily being able to chatter away the time. When the time for words arrives, he would then speak.
At least they were going to have some good weather coming.
Survival: 12 + 5 = 17
Dregar d20=6 Wednesday December 28th, 2005 11:10:48 AM
Dregar nods his head when Garret assigns him with Neco on the second watch. He then hears about how Neco and Bohdi might be together. Either way it doesn't matter to him, just as long as he gets to kill something soon.
When the morning comes, Dregar exits his tent and drinks from his waterskin. His mouth is parched, and parts of his lips are cracked. He looks up to the sky. Once again he doesn't see what everyone else is seeing about the vein. ( Survival 11)
He quietly sets about getting his gear ready, he eats if any food is presented. If not, he marches on hungry.
Garrett Wednesday December 28th, 2005 1:13:32 PM
"Alright then, Neco and Bohdi it is on first watch. Dregar and Aiden on second. Edgler and Myself on last."(Sorry, confused myself trying to place everyone best.)
Morning Sun Wednesday December 28th, 2005 8:51:48 PM
The deep night passes without incident. Far off through the night of Ice Vein, the howls of wolves roll across the tundra. A large pack hunts this night, but from all accounts it is also quite far off.
The Morning is more of the same weather, Cold witha slight wind and into the white fog it creates, Aiden leads. The ground by mid day becomes uneven and shale rock begins to petrude at ackward angles. The going is not rough yet, but promises to possibly tax one's stamina after a long day.
Bohdi Nackle Wednesday December 28th, 2005 9:49:06 PM
Bohdi used his Pearl of Power to renew his Unseen Servant at midday and continued to direct it to erase the party's tracks as they marched.
"We need--" the gnome panted, and struggled to regain his breath. "Need--to--think about setting a base camp somewhere, and--and send out scouts. Maybe--maybe--in--the morning. Can--plan--spells. Invisibility. Protection--from Arrows. Maybe an--illusion spell--for the camp. Find the giants. Where--where they sleep--during--the day."
He stopped for a moment and gasped. "And find me some bloody air!"
If the weather permitted, Bohdi would direct Squork to fly around the area and report any signs of giants before the group camped for the night. He would also have the bird seek out a protected location for a campsite, if the terrain allowed for one.
Spell list: Gnome abilities: Dancing lights, Prestidigitation, Ghost Sound, Speak with Burrowing Mammals Level 0: Detect Magic, Message (x3) Level 1: Mage Armor, Alarm, Unseen Servant (cast x2), Color Spray [note: Pearl of Power, one prepared L1 spell/day may be cast twice] Level 2: Hypnotic Pattern, Protection from Arrows, Web

Garrett Thursday December 29th, 2005 7:57:33 AM
If we are getting close to where the giants attacked our hunting party, then Garrett will agree with Bohdi and we will set up a base camp. If not, Garrett will suggest we take breaks at more frequent intervals to help ward off fatigue.
"Bohdi, can squork find things like tracks or snow mounds that are out of place? We need to find evidence of their passing or or something that could be their burrows. We need a place to start."
If nothing more useful is forthcoming, then we continue on to where the hunters were killed by the giants.
EdglerVess Thursday December 29th, 2005 8:19:02 AM
Edgler sympathizes with Bohdi as he watches the poor gnome struggle through the snow. The priest merely nods as some strategy is set forth concerning locating the giants. As the group makes ready to move again Edgler approaches Bohdi, "Let me take your pack for awhile...just until you can catch your wind."

"Th--thanks," gasped the surprised, but appreciative gnome. He eyed the dwarven cleric with bemusement, and a look of recognition crossed his eyes--as if really noticing the dwarf for the first time. "Ta very much."
After a moment, Bohdi nodded to Garrett. "Right, I'll tell Squork to be on the lookout after he finds us a campsite. If we set camp early enough, maybe someone with tracking skills--" he inclined his head toward Aiden-- "Can try their luck in spotting more signs of the Sne Kempje."

Dregar d20=9 d20=2 Thursday December 29th, 2005 1:12:59 PM
Dregar watches as the bird flies off to find a camp or any passing of the giants. Oh, how his fingers ached to grasp his axe and split some giant skull. He plodded through the craking ice/snow the entire time scanning the horizon, and listening for anything that crunches towards them.

Aiden d20=18 d20=9 d20=6 d20=14 Thursday December 29th, 2005 7:19:30 PM
Aiden nodded at Bohdi's suggestion, "makes sense...Might want to follow my tracks..." he then suggested.
"Less for you to walk in..."
As Aiden continued onwards, he did make sure to keep an eye out for tracks. While he trailblazes, he made sure to pace himself so that the others would see what steps to follow, what to grasp, and that way, they would not be worn out should anything happen.
Night 2 Thursday December 29th, 2005 8:36:36 PM
The unseen servant moves along behind the group stirring the snow cover and to a casual observer the trail is nicely concealed. Garret confers with Aiden, the group is easily another day or two from the attack site, but by this evening will be where they themselves were attacked just a couple weeks ago. Perhaps they should start looking now to camp, it could take several hours to find a good location. Garret also speaks to Bohdi on specifics Squork could look for and Bohdi sends his familiar off into the pale white sky. Squork gives the gnome a sideways look and mumbles, "Snow mounds out of place in the bloody wilderness. Why not ask me to just slay the Sne Kjempe and be..." the rant trails off as he flies out from the group. The day is not so cold that the Raven should be in any danger. The small black speck glides through the afternoon air and soon is lost form most sight. (Spot DC15 to locate)
Shortly after midday, Edgler offers to lighten Bohdi's load and the gnome quickly agrees. The group marches on, eyes and ears alert, nerves a bit on edge. Aiden continues to move them east towards the attack and slaying of the small hunting party some three weeks ago.
A few more hours of hiking past across teh uneven and broken land when Squork zooms in. He doesn't say much, which likely means he didn't see anything useful. An hour later Aiden points to the base of a small outcropping, "There would be best from the wind and any approaching weather system, but the low ground and cropping also creates a blind spot in defense. Over there" he swings his arm right, "exposure to the elements but high ground defensively." He looks to Garret, Night fast approaching.
Give specifics on watch fires shelter and anything you think may save your, er rather anything else you wish to include.
Garrett Thursday December 29th, 2005 9:21:51 PM
"We will take the high ground location for defense, and for a better chance of spotting our opponents. Since everyone has received Endure Elements, the cold should not be an issue. Should there be quite a bit of snow, the tents will provide shelter, but I don't recall any from the weather forecast."
(Garrett is still casting EE on everyone. Bohdi, If you want to use one of yours on a daily basis, I will let you use the Rod for it, allowing me to only use two instead of three, and we will all always be covered for instances such as this.)
"Watch will remain the same every night unless we find a problem with it. Neco and Bohdi on first watch. Dregar and Aiden on second. Edgler and Myself on last."
"A fire is likely to draw attention from anything out there. Unfortunately, that would be the easiest way to find them is to let them come to us. Let them come here, kill them, and track them back to where they came from. Therefore, I suggest we set a trap, and we build a fire over there." Garrett points to the sheltered low ground location where it would be logical for a group of hunters to camp. "We also set up the tent(s) over there, and much of our misc gear, to make it look like an occupied camp. We then dig into the snow over here in make do sleeping/hiding shelters and wait and watch for the Sne Kjempe to attack that camp. Hopefully we will see them as they approach the fire/camp, and we can quietly wake our own people and prepare to surprise them instead of them surprising us."
"Well, what do you guys think? better to hit them unexpectedly instead of the other way around."
(OOC what is the distance between the two sites?) DM About 150 feet, uneven terrain makes running dangerous and charging impossible
Aiden Friday December 30th, 2005 1:45:16 AM
Aiden listened, and spoke to Garrett's plan. "Garrett...I believe that the sne Kjempe are more wily than to simply think stuff bags are hunters."
"Bohdi...can you set your spell...this servant, to do some movements? That way the snow giants will see something stirring, and perhaps lead them further into the trap...And, they would expect someone to be, guard, over a group of hunters in the wild."
Frowning even more, "it would make sense for me to stand there as well, to be the " as he tried to think of a good word, "bait."
"If they attack at night, some of us will need better light to see as well, especially when we fight."
He then looked upwards towards the high ground. "It is too bad we did not bring netting. We could set up a trap that has some snow, ice and rock that could fall down on them when the time is right, if they fall into Garrett's trap..."
<tags>
(OOC: are we aware what type of vision the Sne Kjempe have?) DM, Sne Kjempe are nocturnal. The last pair you met carried no light source and attacked from just over 60'
EdglerVess Friday December 30th, 2005 10:39:55 AM
The priest stood there in the snow listening intently to the plans of the others, then offers his own input. "I think it is a good plan, Garrett. Personally, I have no idea how 'wily' these creatures are, but I think this could be a good test. Aiden's suggestions of using Bohdi's servant his sound, but I don't like the idea of have a single member of our group as 'bait'." The dwarf pause in thought while absently smoothing his beard. "No... the idea of one us over there... alone... By the time we got over there for support... it could be too late."
Dregar Friday December 30th, 2005 11:16:41 AM
Dregar watched as everyone talked. He didn't mind either way as to what plan they used so he just sat back, drinking from his waterskin. His eyes fell to Aiden, the man he was set to watch with. He seemed like he was a good member to watch with. Seeing that everyone else had it handled, Dregar rolled over onto his blanket and pulled it up above his head.
Aiden (illegal second post) Friday December 30th, 2005 11:40:14 AM
Aiden looked at Edgler for a moment, "they came at night without light...If they see little heat or movement, they may sense a trap. But if someone is there, it may cause them to become overconfident."
Gruffly, he then asked, "What magicks do we have?" He hated the question and the fact of relying upon it bothered him. "If it is not...against your gods or studies to tell us, I think it would best help us to plan..."

EdglerVess (Illegal 2nd) Friday December 30th, 2005 12:57:58 PM
"That is a good point, Aiden. But Garrett mentioned there would be a fire at the ambush site. I have darkvision and I know that a fire will mask any heat given off by those people around it. With Bohdi's servant causing slight movements it should be enough to trick the giants. I am really against the idea of leaving you out there are bait. It is too dangerous.
DM Point of order Friday December 30th, 2005 2:31:26 PM
Remember Darkvision does not work like the old infravision. Heat sources have no effect on it. You can see clearly just like seeing in the day time but in Black and White
Neco Friday December 30th, 2005 3:50:31 PM
"I can go with him," The young rogue pipes in. "My skills are well suited for ambushes and surprise attacks."
"We could have Aiden in the camp and I could be hidden on the outskirts of the camp, say 60 or so feet away. The giants are likely to attack from a distance like last time."
"If something goes wrong I can set off a spell as a signal, or if Aidan and I can communicate with Bohdi through his message spell we could send warning without the giants knowing."
Garrett Friday December 30th, 2005 8:19:20 PM
"I do not want any of our people down there. It's too risky. We will have to take a chance that they aren't all that bright, and that nobody has actually ever tried to set a trap for them before."
"Bohdi, how about one of your illusions. If we see them, do you think you could create an illusion of someone moving around in the tent, or even walking out of the tent?
"If they do expect a guard, they may circle around the camp trying to find one, hopefully that would give us a better chance of spotting them and using an illusion to let them see what they expect to see."
DM post Friday December 30th, 2005 10:14:52 PM
Will Post tomorrow.
Aiden Saturday December 31st, 2005 5:20:12 PM
Aiden gave a slight nod towards the rogue, recognizing her wilyness in helping to set the trap. "We must be careful not to spread out too much, though your idea is good Neco."
Aiden listened to Garrett's words, for he was the leader of the group.
"How tired will the enchantments make you Bohdi? It would not be good if we have you cast your spells for the trap, and then be too weary for the battle.."
It was pretty obvious that Aiden knew little about magick, and what it took out of a mage (or priest).
Traps Laid Saturday December 31st, 2005 6:09:23 PM
The group discusses at length the merits of laying a trap for the Sne Kjempe. Opinions differ on how much risk to undertake. Aiden feels 'bait' is needed, becuse while the giants are dull, he believes them to not be that dull as to just storm a camp where no one is visible.
Most others feel Aiden over 150 feet away across difficult terrain would put him beyond quick help. It is common knowledge a giant can kill a human very, very quickly.
The only thing truly decided is that the group will make camp on the high ground, with a fdake camp at the other site. Darkness is falling and with it, the visual range of those with exceptional sight. Decisions on teh exact nature of the trap will need to be finalized and soon.
Survival DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {High clouds are moving in from the south est. Which is over the mountains and likely means snow late tonight.}
Garrett Monday January 2nd, 2006 11:20:12 AM
"Putting someone in that camp will get them killed, and that will not do. Maybe the trap will work, maybe it won't, but by putting the extra camp over there, we are not losing anything, and perhaps gaining an advantage."
"Let us try it like I have already said, since it will endanger none of us. We can discuss better traps once we have a new day to work on something."
"My hope is that although they may not be stupid, it is likely that nobody has ever set a trap for them before. They are less likely to suspect a trap, and may be more likely to believe that the watch simply crawled into the tent to stay warm or fell asleep."
Bohdi Nackle Monday January 2nd, 2006 12:38:41 PM
"Sorry, everyone," Bohdi shook his head. "But I'm not likely to be much good for setting a trap tonight. I've used my Unseen Servant spell twice already today--that's all I had. I could use my natural powers of prestidigitation to make some movement, but that'll only last an hour. I do have a Rope Trick scroll--that'd let us all hide right inside the camp overnight, to set an ambush--But I'd rather save that scroll for emergencies."
If the others wanted Bohdi to use Prestidigitation to make some movement in the ambush camp, he would--but otherwise he readied for his watch as usual.

Aiden Monday January 2nd, 2006 1:44:30 PM
Aiden nodded as he heard the leader of the group overriding his thought of being placed within the camp.
Aiden's eyes glittered with thought once he heard that Bohdi had used his unseen servants for the day. "Again friend Bohdi, one day I will need you to explain this magick to me so that I can better understand it...."
"Let us set the false camp, and see if they will want to raid it..."

The group sets a second camp, complete with tents and fires and thenm retreats to the small hillock about 150' away. Unattended, the small warming fires do not last nearly as long and somewhere in the second watch, they blink out completely. Not too far after a snow starts to fall and promises to put a nice covering of fresh powder on the ground. The Endure Element Spells last through the night as does the snow. The watches find themselves almost doing as much digging as they do watching, to prevent thier sleeping companions from sufficating under a thick ice crystal blanket. The temperature stays cold through out the fall, resulting in tiny crystals and a thick blanketing effect. More distant howls muffled from distance and the falling snow reach the ears of the last watch as the dim rays of morning splash across the newly shaped terrain. Again wolves hunt this dawn.
The group is slower out as the second camp, while more protected then the party was from the several feet of snow which fell, is still buried deep and should be retrieved. Mid morning finds the party just getting under way under a grey sky and wind stiffening from the Southwest. Bohdi Nackle d20=3 Monday January 2nd, 2006 9:04:42 PM ooc: made a long illegal second post to catch up to all of the brilliant tactical discussion that everyone's been having, had Bohdi cast Prestidigitation and Alarm spells on the ambush camp--and when I posted, I saw that the DM post had beat me to it! LOL! DMs, I hope you'll forgive me this once deleting a post--an illegal second post that didn't affect the action--and posting anew in light of your excellent continuity.
Bohdi awoke with a shiver. He gratefully accepted the spell from Garrett that would protect him from the elements and gave the priest of Domi an appreciative nod. (Survival, untrained, 3) As usual, the gnome's "natural" instincts were of no aid. "Still looks like a bloody wilderness to me," he sniffed.
"Look, everyone, that was a bloody brilliant discussion last night, really, it was. Now let's think about it again, while the priests and I are fresh and can consider what spells to prepare. Shall we try the same trick again tonight if possible? If so, I'll gladly prepare extra Unseen Servants and Alarm spells."
"Or shall we try to use the day to hunt down these bloody Sne Kjempe and dash their bloody brains out while they're sleeping? I, for one, much prefer the latter. If so, maybe I should prepare a different set of spells. Either way, Aiden--perhaps you can start using those tracking skills of yours to locate the bloody buggers?"
"For spells, as usual, I'm all ears to suggestions--pardon the pun," the gnome added, wiggling his prominent pointed ears. "Aiden, I'm glad to explain anything you'd like to know."
