Angel Springs

Airin and Fioni  d20+6=19 d20+9=25
Monday December 12th, 2005 10:51:46 AM

"MUNGO NOOOO ..."

is all Airin manages to cry once she notices he and Morpth are opening some dusty old tome. Oh Mother Nature... my God... have they never heard that opening dusty old tomes of magic could only lead to disastrous effects?!?

This isn't the first time they all shift to some strange new location. Only this time it happened because of some strange tome of magic. Airin looks around to the surroundings hoping to find some sort of recognition point.

Instinctively Airin takes her crossbow and carefully listens.

Rolls:
spot: 19
listen: 25

Tobias  d20+1=3 d20+8=13
Monday December 12th, 2005 11:29:36 AM

"What in the hell was that?" says Tobias looking around for the two that sent him here. But, they don't appear to be anywhere in sight. "And, where are we now?"

Tobias looks around for any distinctive markings that will help him get his bearings: road signs, coats of arms, etc.

He also pulls his shortbow out over his shoulder and gets it ready.

Rolls:
Knowledge (geography) - 3
Survival - 13 (or 15, if we're still in Culverwood)
Also, I have more than 5 ranks in Survival, so I can determine where north is.

[OOC: Not sure if survival to keep from getting lost will work in this case (probably not), but just in case.]

Kendry  d20+4=22
Monday December 12th, 2005 3:08:26 PM

As Mungo takes down a book, Kendry grabs a book off the shelf with an interesting title (especially if he finds one about Lawni's Lens itself, or songs, or history, or giants, meaning to take a look inside. Then, when Mungo begins to read his aloud, the bard takes a look over in that direction. He tucks the book under his arm and walks over to take a look at what their guide is reading. With Morpth there menacing with a sap, he says, "Don't worry - just looking," and does so, just looking at the text that Mungo chants. He sees the mists arise, and wonders what Mungo is up to. But, so far, he trusts the old hobbit, and figures he knows what he's up to.

"Alemi's beard!" Kendry exclaims once the teleportation transpires. He looks around at his companions. "So, Lomar, Bobbles, Morpth, Patterton, Mungo and Aya were left behind - unless Mungo whisked them elsewhere." He wonders why Mungo did not send Aya with them, too. "Come 'ere, Cheann," he calls out to his war dog. He checks the animals and, if they appear troubled by the rapid change of scenery, will strive to calm them down. Handle animal: 22

He looks toward the city. If it's Angel Springs, he knows that city - goes there often. If it's Plateau City, he'll recognise it by the Star Mages Guild tower and the huge pyramid and a few other tall landmarks. If it's not one of these cities, then all bets are off. If it is one of those cities, he answers Tobias' question. "Oh, that's [fill in the blank]."

He checks under his arm to see if the book he was holding is still there. "Well, I guess tonight will not grant another opportunity to gaze through Lawni's Lens. Is everyone feeling all right?"

Dwight
Monday December 12th, 2005 7:49:39 PM

Having joined the group again, and said a casual hello to the next family member that has arrived, Dwight was just about to grab the thickest book on the shelf within reach. "Whoa!"

"It would be nice if we had some warning," Dwight begins angrily, but seeing no immediate danger finishes calmly.

"Any guesses where you have brought us, Mungo?"

"i'm guessin' we aren't in the Valley anymore. Because there is no place like home, and this don't look quite like home, haven't seen anywhere else so I can't help in determinig our new location."

Airin and Fioni
Tuesday December 13th, 2005 8:48:25 AM

Airin circles in place to see where they are, crossbow loaded ears and eyes sharp.

Fioni is also wodnering what happened and flies up to see from above.

WOW! Look a town [DM Jon-Paul(JPW)]
Tuesday December 13th, 2005 9:02:09 AM

Wow! Look a town!

Aya gets up from under the dog that was sitting on him as Cheann goes off to Kendry.

Those of you with even meager spot skills can tell that this is Angel Springs, and you are standing on along side the road just outsid Trader's gate.

Books!

Kendry still has the book he took tucked under his arm. Then Kendry answers Tobias' question. "Oh, that's Angel Springs."

Dwight also has his book in his hands, the thick one that he was pulling when the ground shifted.

Tobias
Tuesday December 13th, 2005 11:08:54 AM

"Angel Springs, right. Where exactly is that?" Since some folks seem to recognize this place, Tobias puts away his short bow and tries not to be so jittery.

"What do we do now?"

[OOC: Did the other characters, like Mungo, make this trip?]

Airin and Fioni
Tuesday December 13th, 2005 11:50:43 AM

"oh... Angel Springs" Airin gasps. Was that some sort of dissapointment you hear in her voice? Looks like she was longing for some excitment :-)

"Ok, who'll be our guide? Let's visit our capital!"

Selithe
Tuesday December 13th, 2005 5:44:30 PM

Selithe sighs and plants her hands on her hips as she looks around, "Okay, I'm really tired of suddenly being here and then there."

Selithe looks to Kendry, did any of those books look decent enough to try to go back sometime?"

Selithe isn't sure what to make out of all this teleporting around and everything even if it is kind of interesting.

Tobias
Tuesday December 13th, 2005 6:47:20 PM

"So, do you folks just teleport about randomly? That's quite strange and unnatural. What's causing this hopping around?"

"I don't think I've been to Angel Springs. A little bit too much civilization if you ask me. Can someone show me around?"

Dwight
Tuesday December 13th, 2005 9:46:44 PM

Surprised the book is still in his hand, he takes a look at the title. "Hmmm...Well it will make an interesting read at some point." Unless the book seems magical, Dwight tucks it into his bag.

"Was anyone thinking Angel Springs at that precise moment?" Dwight inquires.

"Mungo, did you know this was going to happen? Being able to teleport here as needed would be very helpful in our adventures. Can it be done again? Can we pick other places?" Dwight then realizes he hasn't given Mungo any time to answer. With a slight struggle he stops asking questions.

Podo
Tuesday December 13th, 2005 10:46:37 PM

"Nice to meet you Tobias! I'm Podo, Kendry's Cousin!" says Podo to Tobias.

"Oh, Boy! Its AS! I've been wanting to come here for some time now! Remind me to thank Mungo for this trip next time we see him. Say, why don't we just go to his shop? Anyone know of a temple around here?" says Podo aloud.

Trader's Gate [DM Jon-Paul (JPW)]
Tuesday December 13th, 2005 10:47:28 PM

Let's take a tour!

Podo suggests getting a tour of the city and also thinks perhaps Kendry should lead the group as Mungo and Morpth do not appear to be here with them.

Inge
Wednesday December 14th, 2005 10:09:59 AM

I suppose you mean lead instead of leave?

Kendry
Wednesday December 14th, 2005 12:30:47 PM

"You all right, Aya? Sorry my dog was sittin' on ya!" Kendry apologizes

Indicating the crossbow Airin just drew, he says with a smile, "Don't think we'll be needin' that right now, love."

"Sure, Selithe - lots of good books, well worth returning to," Kendry answers his sister's question about the library at Lawni's Lens. "Like I said earlier, we might want to see what it would take to hire scribes to copy some or all of the books. Mungo sure found a useful one, I'd say - though, like Dwight said, I wish he'd've warned us of his plans. Why not ask us, first? Strange bird, he."

He addresses Tobias' question. "No, we don't usually go teleporting around. We did take a trip with the help of some druids, traveling through trees from here to Plateau City and then back again.

"Surely you've been to Angel Springs - at least when you were little?" Kendry says, amazed to find a halfling who does not know about the largest town in Crescent Valley. "You have been away for a while, I guess."

"No, Dwight, I wasn't thinking of the city - thought without a doubt Mungo was."

The hobbit just shakes his head and smiles at their present circumstances. "Sure, glad to show you around," he nods towards Podo.

Since they are standing on the road by the bridge over the Crescent River, the bard points off to the left toward a stand of trees, a few hundred yards northwest of where they stand. "That is the Grove of Hedglantine." He turns around to face southwest. "And you can see the tents of the Elven Encampment over there." The elves have their own dock on the river.

"And, across the bridge over the Crescent River - yonder is the Trade Gate. Just beyond is the West Spur Road, with the Glassy Gaze Tavern one of the first establishments on the left. Let's cross, and I'll show you around. Podo wants to visit the temple, I'd like to say hi to my family over at the Music and Toy Shop, and there are lots of good folk inside. We can drink the cool, clear water of the springs inside, too."

Kendry takes the reins of his ponies, says, "Gittup," and begins to lead the way across the bridge to the gate.

Tobias
Wednesday December 14th, 2005 2:45:08 PM

"Ah, yes, Angel Springs. That teleport must have affected by hearing. I thought you said Angle Spriggs. It has been a while since I've been here. The Culverwood trails are more to my liking. The place has changed a bit..."

Tobias follows Kendry into the city taking in it all in...

Dwight
Wednesday December 14th, 2005 9:34:42 PM

"Honestly, I thought I was the only one. Never been to Angel Springs, don't know exactly why, but it seemed to bring up bad memories for my ma and pa. On extremely rare occassions, pa would venture here by himself. Us kids were never allowed to join."

"It looks amazing. I'm guessing my ma's family must be from here, and that's why we never visited. Sounds very unhalfling like, I know, but family issues are tough sometimes. Well, not sure if I believe that but that is what pa kept saying whenever we questioned."

"Where shall we venture to first? Haven't really found any new items to sell, perhaps we can ask around about vegatation growth."

Kendry
Wednesday December 14th, 2005 11:26:53 PM

"Great idea, Dwight!" Kendry says when the vegetation is brought up. "I wonder, now, what effects Eberyon's magic has had on the city?"

A. Springs [DM Jon-Paul(JPW)]
Thursday December 15th, 2005 9:10:08 AM

A.S.

As Kendry begins to lead the group into the city, he picks up the role as tour guide pointing out major areas in and around the city as well as tossing out some tids bits of factual information.

If you adventure far into the city through the trader's gate, you will eventually walk right past Mungo Hardbottle Antiquities Shoppe.

Although you are all listening to Kendry spew forth words as no other bard can, Podo's head is in the clouds with his single minded desire to seek out the temple of Alemi.

Hot Tubbing

Lomar & Bobbles continue to have bubble matches in the hot tub oblivious to the events which have spiraled about them.

Tobias
Thursday December 15th, 2005 11:45:40 AM

"So, Dwight, what's this about vegetation growth?"

"Wow, the city seems bigger than I remember."

"Is that the same Mungo that teleported us here? Do you think that he might be inside?"

Selithe
Thursday December 15th, 2005 1:36:03 PM

Selithe follows her brother and thinks over before sighing, "Not to sure about seeing the shop considering they weren't overly happy abou me leaving to get away from the family trade." Selithe is abit worried about the idea of seeing one or both of her parents or any other relative who might be working there and know her.

Kendry
Thursday December 15th, 2005 2:47:40 PM

"Well, Tobias, I have no clear idea just what Mungo is up to, nor whether he will be here or not. One thing, though - we have an appointment with him here in two weeks time. Hey, I wonder if Calfast is here! Calfast Rowgold Tunnelly - you're related to our new Burgomeister, y'know, Tobias."

"Aw, c'mon, sis. You're family. They love ya!" Kendry encourages Selithe.

Kendry, Tour Guide
Thursday December 15th, 2005 3:53:20 PM

"Well, as you can see, on our left while walking up the West Spur Road - yep, we left the Glassy Gaze behind us - there are various stores off to our left. Here in Angel Springs, with many two- to four-story buildings, the ground floor along the main streets tend to be reserved for business, cafes, scribes and the like. Though by tradition, our ancestors - and still many of us in other towns - like to live underground, here in Angel Springs most folks live on the upper stories of the buildings. So - well, there's greengrocer Palco, himself. Hullo, Mister Palco!" Kendry says, combining the honorific of 'mister' along with the hobbit's first name - a mixture of familiarity and politeness common to this city. "How's the missus? And your nine children?"

After exchanging greetings with Palco Warmtoes Trufflefinder, Kendry tells his friends, "He and his family live on the third and fourth floor above the grocery, and Palco's folks live in the floor just above the grocery. Took him three years to convince them to move from Humble's Ford.

"'Angel Springs,'" he quotes in a high-pitched, motherly voice, "'Angel Springs is a nonsense town. Don't know left from right, up from down there, Palco. No, won't see me moving my things to that place. Don't know how you and Susany can see fit to raise your brood there, anyhow. Too modern for me. Just too, too different. Nope. Old ways are best. The burrow is where one should grow up. Old ways are best.'"

Switching back to his normal voice, Kendry says, "'Bout seven years ago, Pa and I were there, deliverin' a real nice harp for Palco's youngest sister, Marigold - and no, she's not named for my aunt - just a coincidence, that. Well, she was blooming into a fine musician. Anyway, we couldn't help but overhearing their conversation, since it took place right in front of us!"

As the way opens up, Kendry points out the Bell Tower. "Got to ring that a few times, myself! It rings every day at nine, and noon, and three, and six. Then, if a special announcement needs makin', they've got special rings, and lots of folks will gather round to see what the news is. Let's turn right here."

Around the corner is a marketplace. Through the stalls he leads, until stopping in front of one that has a wood frame around it, a furnace, a fire pit, and lots of iron and steel implements round about.

"Thought we'd leave the ponies here, have their shoes looked after. The smithy has stables nearby," he explains.

"Yessir, Master Tim," Kendry greets the smithy. "Mind taking a look at my ponies' shoes? If you could have apprentice Baryn look over the tacking, too, since he knows leatherwork, that'd be right kind of you, not to mention appreciated." He offers four gold pieces as a downpayment on any work done. "If the job comes out higher, just let me know, and I'll make up the difference."

Then, looking at his ponies, he realizes something. "Oh - I should drop off the pack saddles at the shop, first. We'll get them back to you right soon, Master Tim."

"We could cut through the Hairfoot Marketplace," he tells his companions, "but likely would be besieged by folks wanting to sell their wares, or bum a smoke, or tell us some tall tale. Let's turn back, and head along East Springs Road. Our family music and toy store is there, and I'll drop off my extra stuff - you all can, too, if you'd like. Now, Podo, the temple is just a bit farther along there. I'll show you after I introduce you all to whoever's at the shop, all right?"

Unless any object, Kendry does just that, and leads the way eastward on East Springs Road. Along the way, though, one of his ponies decides to drop some 'road apples.' Kendry hands the reins to Selithe, runs over to the side of the road where a broad-headed shovel leans against a big barrel. He runs back, scoops up the droppings, empties the shovel's contents in the barrel, and leans the instrument back up where it was. "They can fine you if you don't pick up after your animals," he explains. "Not that they do often, but they can."

Down the street a bit he rings the bell just outside the door of the WinWood Toys & Music shop, then steps through. "Hullo? Anybody home? Leska? Nalfein?" he calls out the names of an older sister and brother.

Dwight
Thursday December 15th, 2005 5:29:00 PM

Slightly puzzled by Tobias' question, Dwight responds in one of Kendry's brief pauses. "Several days ago, perhaps a week now? Ebyron was born. We helped defeat him and then vegatation went crazy. Plants grew in a few hours the length it normally grows in years.'

"Houses were overcome with growth, and a few plants even took hostile actions towards us halflings."

"The ummm, something city, can't believe I can't remember its name, the city was so big. Anyways they had it worse I think. People were still battling overgrown bushes, roses, and other plants. It was quite a site to see. "

"Now that I think about it, the magic at the Lens seems to have protected it from Ebryons veggies. We will have to go back and get some more books, or at the very least read them."

Dwight looks around with some interest, but doesn't really care where we visit.

Airin and Fioni
Friday December 16th, 2005 3:25:32 AM

Airin casually stores her crossbow away. Walking around the City capital with drawn weapons may not be the smarted thing to do. Fioni sits on her arms once again and following Kendry's lead she admires the grandeur of the city.

Oh she has been here before, but back then she was with her mentor Aresius. He brought her to the elf encamptments as he himself was an elf. There she learned how to speak elvish as well.

ADM Kim
Saturday December 17th, 2005 1:38:10 AM

As the party enters WinWood Toys & Music, on the left side of the shop are all kinds of toys - mostly wooden, but many also have metal, glass, leather and other components. The right side of the shop is filled with musical instruments - harps, drums, flutes, lutes, some zithers, violins, gambas, mandolins, cymbals, zil, a few chalumeaus, dulcimers, lyres, pan-pipes, recorders, a bladder pipe, a pair of kortholts, a very nice organetto, a rauschpfeife, a mute cornet, three sackbutts, a lysard, a corna muse far too large for a halfling, a shawn and its cousin a dulcian, and - well, many more than will be enumerated here - but that's not to forget the harpsichord tucked in the far corner.

A colorfully painted metal cylinder has very hot water inside, kept that way by three wicks burning below it, and a spigot on the side. It is topped by a small, equally colorful tea pot. Nine matching teacups hang from small hooks near the top of the cylinder.

"Kendry!" exults a rosy-cheeked auburn lass - perhaps mid-thirty's in age, still young for a halfling. She wears a sky-blue dress with daffodil prints just above the bottom hem. She skips up to the bard and plants a kiss on the right cheek, the left cheek, the right cheek, the left cheek...

Kendry
Saturday December 17th, 2005 1:39:59 AM

"Enough!" Kendry says. "You'll wear them away, Leska!" He plants a kiss on her forehead. "All is well? Where is...

Leska & Nalfein (ADM Kim)
Saturday December 17th, 2005 1:43:02 AM

"Selithe!" Leska switches her affection from her brother who opened the door to her sister who is lagging behind. Out the door she bustles with an 'excuse me, please,' and gives Selithe a big hug, a kiss on the lips, and another hug and a swirl.

"Girl, girl, girl. Just come on in, and don't be shy. We don't bite! These your friends? No - no ponies in the shop! - there's a hitching post yonder," she points to a pair of solid posts connected by a lathed pole at the top. "Hey doggies - you mind your manners, and you can come in. Why - you're Tobias, right? Where's your cousin, Patterton? Did he recruit you for this band of vagabonds? Come on in. Yes, you, too, Podo. What are you staring at?"

Tobias vaguely remembers her from the festival in Humble's Ford he attended some years back. Looks like a younger version of her mother.

Leska begins to shoo everyone in to the shop, nodding in a friendly way to Dwight and Aya. "Mind the new toy cabinet to the left - we're just setting it up, and it has a wobbly leg!"

As the party finds itself herded inside, from the back comes a fellow who looks quite a bit like Kendry. The same wavy auburn hair and shining hazel eyes - though not quite so wide set as the bard's. He wears a soft, dark blue shirt, black trousers and deep red vest. A small array of daggers line his belt. "So, long since back safely from the beer run, upsetting Valley politics, shooting at bird people, chasing mounds of grass into the wilderness. I miss anything?" he asks with a sardonic expression.

Airin would recognize him as Nalfein, who left the party just about the time she joined up. She doesn't have much time to look at him, though, as Leska takes her by the arm. "Now, you are Airin. Ain't seen you for years. And don't tell my mother I said 'ain't'! Now, you just come with me, and we'll fix some tea together. I'm Leska. Remember? It was about eight, nine years ago, at the Turnbell Pipewood wedding. Nate and Chrissy? So, what have you been doing since then?" she asks in a conspiratorial tone. She blinks a smile at the bird on Airin's shoulder.

As Leska takes Airin aside, Nalfein pushes off the from doorway and comes forward to shake people's hands. "Hello. I'm Nalfein. Welcome to our shop." He gives Selithe a big hug when he gets to her, and whispers, 'Good to see ya, sis.' Turning to the rest, he says, "Any questions on toys, instruments, or the best places to eat, just ask away!" There's a friendly twinkle in his eyes.

Tobias
Saturday December 17th, 2005 1:05:41 PM

"Hi, Leska, it's nice to see you again." Tobias gives her a hug. "No, Patterton didn't recruit me, actually I haven't seen him in a few years. I just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, when one of their friends decides to send us here."

"And, hello to you too Nalfein."

Tobias walks over to Podo and whispers to him, "Hey, weren't you outside the keep with Patterton? How come he didn't get teleported here with you and the animals?"

Selithe
Saturday December 17th, 2005 11:45:41 PM

Selithe greets Leska with a hug too, taken back by the warm welcoming since she knew her family wasn't happy about her not wanting in the family buisness but happy none the less at being welcomed so nicely.

Inside Selithe greets Nelfein with a large hug also and smiles, "It has been a long time Nelfein, we miss you out there and everyone else." With that Selithe wipes a tear away thinking of Patty and Duncan and sighs.

For alittle bit Selithe has grown abit depressed since Duncan was her first crush and the Patty and she had to bid both farewell for who knows how long.

Airin and Fioni
Monday December 19th, 2005 11:05:50 AM

Airin smiles at Nalfein. Even though she knows little about him, it's always a pleasure to meet fellow adventurers. The set of daggers in his vest are most appealing.

She intends to talk to him and maybe tell the story of the Beer Run she completed when suddenly Leska takes her aside.

"Hahaha, hello Leska! Indeed it's been a long long time! Probably since the day I left home! remember how I wanted to take those flying lessons with Polly and angered my parents soo much they locked me in the cellar for a few days!? Hahah! How have you been! You look stunning!!"

Airin follows Leska inside and sits apart with her, when Leska questions her about what's she's been up to Airin begins to tell.

"Ah yes. I remember as if it was yesterday. After spending a few years with my mentor Aresius, he decided the time had come for me to leave him and travel the Wold on my own. When I returned to Hovel I learned some of my friends, like Nalfein, Kendry and Selithe had embarked on some sort of adventure. So I figured why not join them! ..."

Airin talks and talks and tells Leska the entire Beer Run adventure. How they met Bobbles, and Lomar - especially how she tied Lomar's toes together which still makes her laugh madly! Leska might notice the fact that Airin does speak a lot about how bravely Kendry acted and how nice he can sing and speach... every time she mentions the Bard her eyes twinkle... Shouldn't take Leska long to understand how Airin feels about him...

Airin also tells about how she found Fioni. The little hawk jumps up and down the table as she hears airin mention her name. Fioni nods as if to say hello to Leska.

"Allright you show-off! Get over here." Airin says to Fioni. "She's a fabulous Hawk you know. She has helped me countless times allready!

Then Airin turns around to look for her friends and asks Leska : "So... what are you guys doing here?!?"

Nalfein & Leska (ADM Kim)
Monday December 19th, 2005 3:17:45 PM

"Hey, Tobias," Nalfein answers. "Oh? What friend of theirs sent you all?"

Nalfein looks down at the floor for a moment when Selithe tells him she misses him and mumbles something resembling, "Yeah, um, yep." When he looks up and notices her eyes tearing up, Nalfein says, "What, sis? What's wrong?"

Leska listens attentively to Airin, responding with appreciative 'oh's' and 'uh-huh's' and 'really's?' "So, you're kind of sweet on my brother, eh?" she whispers conspiratorially. "Well, take it slow, sis, take it slow." she counsels.

As she listens, Leska pours tea, pulls a box of cookies and a box of tarts and jam out from under a counter, and offers the shop's hospitality to those who have just entered.

When introduced to Fioni, she casts a spell that Airin may be familiar with. In a moment, Leska is making sounds like a hawk, and Fioni, cocking her head to the side, listens, then answers back. Leska laughs. "Smart bird, Fioni is!"

"Well," Leska tells Airin, "we have this shop to run. In the back we craft some items, and Papa and the rest of the family make things in Hovel that they send here every few weeks. Once a month Papa comes over for a few days, especially dealing with custom orders. And," she adds, stretching her arms wide, "we have lots of friends in town, and parties, and fun!"

Kendry
Monday December 19th, 2005 3:28:39 PM

Kendry, after initial greetings and introductions are handled, takes the saddlebags and pack saddles off the two ponies after lashing their reins to the hitching post. He gives each a feedbag. "Can someone help me get these in back?" he asks, indicating the bags and pack saddles. He'll take some of them, and show any who come with him some of the back rooms, storage areas, the wood and metal shop, the children's play room. "Upstairs there are some rooms - enough room for my whole family, so I expect, unless more of 'em are here, we might be able to stay with Nalf and Leskie while we're in town."

Back in the front room, he says, "Yeah, Podo here wants to get to the temple, see some of the clerics there. Podo - eat a cookie or something. Hey, Nalf - is Calfast in town? Need to talk with him."

Dwight
Monday December 19th, 2005 7:18:32 PM

Going through the standard greetings, Dwight passes the time away watching family interact.

What's your hurry? (Temp DM Cayzle)
Monday December 19th, 2005 8:10:43 PM

Nalfein is surprised at Kendry's eagerness to be off. "Brother, take a break! Sit down, relax. All this adventuring has made you nervous."

Leska takes in Airin's story with wide eyes. A murmured "wow" and "oh my" shows her wonderment. She makes sure that everyone has something to eat and drink.

She declares to everyone in the impromptu tea party, "There is so much I want to hear from you all! We are starved for news. What's this I hear about a Guild of Adventurers? Are you all mixed up in that, as I think I heard in a rumor?"

"Please tell me more! I know too little about you. What are your dreams! What are your ambitions! What drives you to try the adventuring life?" She is so earnest and enthusiastic that the personal nature of her questions don't seem as rude as they might coming from someone else.

[OOC: Leska's questions are a way for me to get to know you. I hope everyone will have an answer for her.]

[OOC: Friends, I'll be taking over here for a month or two. JP is going to play Podo into January, and I'll be DM for a while. For those who do not know, I was one of the original DMs for this game, so I am happy to make a bit of a homecoming. I am also DM of the Windhorn Hamlet game, so feel free to browse that board if you are curious as to my gaming style. Many thanks to Kim for helping out with the transition. I'll be playing Nalfein and Leska here on out. Also let me add that I really want to emphasize daily posts! There is nothing more important to the health of a game. I generally post evenings Mon-Fri, but if you post once a day at the same time each day, you'll be fine. Now that said, let me add that we relax those standards around the holidays, so don;t worry about missing a few posts. For those who want extra holiday adventuring, please check out the Giggling Ghost! Thanks!]

Kendry
Monday December 19th, 2005 8:58:19 PM

As Leska asks her questions, Kendry uses the ink and parchment behind the counter to jot down a quick note.

Once Leska asks her torrent of questions, he says, "Oh, sis, I'm speechless!" telling this bald-faced lie with a twinkle in his eye.

"Go for it - Podo, Dwight, Aya, Tobias, ladies. I'll let you all do the talking on this one."

He holds up a finger - "Be right back!" He steps out on the street, and finds a couple of lads he recognizes to take the ponies over to the blacksmith. "All right. Here's two copper pieces each for you to take the ponies over to Master Tim's smithy. You know where it is? Good. Now," he says, and hands one of them the parchment he just wrote out. On it are the words:
Master Tim,

When you receive my two ponies
and their tack, please burn
your mark at the bottom of this
parchment. I'll reward the lads
who return it.

Kendry L-P
"After you take the ponies to Master Tim, and bring this parchment back with the right thing on it, then you each earn a silver, besides what I already paid you. Understand?" He has them repeat the instructions, then sends them and the ponies on their way.

Then, he re-enters the shop to listen to his friends.

Tobias
Monday December 19th, 2005 9:46:26 PM

First to Nalfein, Tobias responds, "I'm not quite sure. As I said, I had just run into them. We looked around a library for some books. And, next thing you know, their friend teleported us just outside of town... I think his name was something like: Mangle, Mungle, or Mungo (yeah that's it)."

Then to Leska, "What go me adventuring? Well, soon after my father's death, I left the valley and went into Culverwood. I had been taking short excursions into the woods for years in my youth, but I finally decided to go in deeper. During that outing, I found many trails through the wood and tried to memorize as many as I could. Eventually, the Culverwood got me turned around and I thought hopelessly lost. Fortunately, an old half-elven ranger, named Glindor, found me before some large beast or evil band of orcs."

"He took pity on me, took me back to his cabin, and started to show me more about Culverwood, then I ever thought possible. He showed me trails, how to deal with the local animals, tracking, and most importantly how to fight. His dislike for orcs was equal to mine, so he showed me how to track and hunt their bands in particular. He also taught me his respect for Culverwood and its inhabitants; and how to protect them from anyone that might try to harm them."

"As my training progressed, I traveled Culverwood on my own, hunting, tracking, and hiding from trouble. Several times, I found lost merchant caravans that had lost their way in the wood. I started leading these wayward caravans through Culverwood and back onto their known roads. Many times I helped them avoid trouble, and others I helped them fight back orc raiding parties. Grateful, for my help, they started to refer to me as 'Pathfinder' and a few started to seek me out to help them safely cross Culverwood."

"And, that was what I did until a few of months ago..."

"And, I do not belong to an adventuring guild."

Selithe
Monday December 19th, 2005 10:17:01 PM

Selithe rubs tears from her eyes and pastes on a smile, half fake though as her heart at the moment feels torn and she whispers in Nelfein's ear, "I miss Duncan and Patty. Both were....well, special you know."

Selithe eats and enjoys herself before pulling out her cards and slowly shuffling them and flipping them over one at a time on the table, not really minding what turns up since her mind is still on Duncan and Patty at the moment. When the comment of hopes, dreams and such come up Selithe grins though and looks up, "I'm hoping all the adventuring will help with my powers as a conjurer and I have picked up some rogue abilities also to help with my gambling. I plan to see the Wold, gamble with the best of them as I gain in power and become a famous conjurer and gambler in the Wold." Selithe grins as she reshuffles her deck of cards, "One day I hope gamblers and people of the Wold all over know my name when they sit down to play with a deck of cards." Selithe blushes alittle and looks down at her cards, "That won't leavem uch time to work here in the future but I'm sure it will bring buisness when I succeed."

Remembering the spirits and what they told her when she freed them, Selithe reaches up and touches the necklace, thinking to herself "Just wait, one day I will be powerful enough to be remembered far and wide."

Podo Danderfluff Pipewood
Tuesday December 20th, 2005 1:04:58 AM

"Err, well I am not sure what to say honestly, I have been day dreaming allot for that past few days about switching to Alemi from Domi...you've caught me off guard with you inquiries, although I will try..."says Podo.

Podo begins with a brief history of where his beginnings lie... "Blueberry Tomas Pipewood is my Father, which makes me Kendry & Selithe's cousin. My mother is Lilly Tomil Oakendale Danderfluff. That makes her; my mother; a relative of Shale Leafwin Oakendale, Kendry's cousin through his mother's sister."

Podo continues with "...I've always had a desire to help others and although I strived as I might, the Priesthood was never really for me. While traveling about I learned of Domi and Alemi. After hearing about them, I knew I wanted to be a monk.
After graduating from the Monastery, I decided to return to my roots to see what had become of my family. Along the way, I tried where I might to live up to the principles of both my profession and the teachings of Domi."

Podo concludes with, "Although I love Domi as he has shown a great many things to me in my life and in my living, I feel that there has to be more I am missing in carrying my walk alone mission bring peace and compassion for my fellow Woldians that I have started to look to Alemi for guidance as once Domi looked to Alemi, now I must also look too."
"Funny, I didn't think I'd ever reveal my inner most feelings and desires to someone I just met, but dear lady your earnest desires has brought to me some peace and comfort in answering your questions." Podo answers the lady's question.

Shedding a tear, embarrassed; Podo fades into the background to be alone.

Airin and Fioni
Tuesday December 20th, 2005 10:02:46 AM

(ooc: welcome back to the Valley Cayzle! Guess you only know Kendry and Selithe right? Oh goody... now I have you on the other side of the table... instead of me sending Vauhwyt around, I'm gonna get it back ;-) )

Airin listens as her friends tell tales about themselves. In a way this is the ideal moment to get to know each other a little better. Tobias only recently joined the pack, and well, there hasn't been much time to get to know Aya and the others either.

Then it's Airin's turn to tell her stories.

"Well Leska, I joined up with your brother and sister when they were out to get some beer. At that time me and Olo Thistlefoot joined the pack. Olo sadly enough has left us a while back. The same goes for Patty whom we freed from the Goblins! Ah those were ctimes Leska! You should have been there! Not to mention the way we found Lomar, our Ogre friend!

"We almost had the biggest argument among our group when we tried to join the Woldian League of Adventurers. Your brother there really wanted us all to join and... well I guess we nearly got to fight each other! Hahaha."
Leska will notice the blue sign Airin wears of the WLA.

Airin talks a lot more, then she starts to tell a little more about how she acts in this fine group...

"Guess I'm the paranoid one... I will always assume people will want to ambush us, or capture us, or fight, or whatever... I'll never think their intentions are peaceful... I know this has angered some of my friends here. I remember quite vividly how me and Podo there once got in a rather heated discussion that ended with the both of us laughing like maniacs! To make a long story short, I got berserk over a piece of grass..."

Then Airin takes of her crossbow, bastard sword and backpack. "Guess we can relax a bit now right?"
The concealed daggers underneath her clothes remain virtually undetectable.

"Oh that's right, have you ever heard of the Telperiën Family? They are supposed to be a family of artists that used to live in the City. Look... " Airin says as she takes out 4 signet rings. "We took these from that Goblin leader Bob back in the beer run. Some time ago before the Fey Uprising the Druids Savoulus and Clover told us they belong to that Telperiën family. It was Mungo, our guide to the Castle of the Fey King who told me to go look for them in Angel Springs by use of the Library... Have you ever heard of them?"

OOC 2: Cayzle, for your reference I'm adding all intell we gathered concerning the rings:

(Tuesday December 14th 2004)
4 golden signet rings with three different family crests divided among them. The styles of the rings seem to vary some. Some have thick golden bands and with symbols that look like shields. Two rings look delicate and extremely well crafted. They're made to look like thin golden vines with leaves and berries. As if taken straight out of nature. You are, however, pretty certain that these didn't originally belong to goblins.
They don't look like anything coming from Humble's Ford. In fact, they don't look like hobbit styles at all. They definitely came from other cultures outside the Crescent Valley.
Airin is able to determine that they are roughly worth 25 gold a piece. However, they may bring more from collectors or the family in which they came from (sentimental value). Airin finds common script on one of the thicker rings. I reads, "Let the deid shaw." Kendry can determine that it's an earlier form of the common language and that if translated into modern common it would mean, "Let the deed show." Could be a family motto. The only other markings on the ring is a crest with a backwards 'F' and a warriors helmet with a stag's head mounted on top. Definitely a human design. Two rings have this design.
The other two have elegant vine-like designs. Neither of you see any writing on them. However Kendry is able to determine they are elven in style.
In the encounter with Savoulus and Clover (2 druids) Airin shows one of the Elven Style rings on her hand to them. They both recognise them and tell Airin : "This is the ring from a well known family named Telperiën. They are a family of artists. Muscians, painters, and craftsman. I wonder which Telperiën it belonged to!"

Kendry
Tuesday December 20th, 2005 5:43:06 PM

He listens to his friends talk about themselves. "'Pathfinder,' eh? Good to hear. I admire tracking skills. Had a fellow travel with us just for a day recently - Kleel - and he and his badger, Lefty, were good at tracking."

"You're right, sis - both Duncan and Patterton are good hobbits, good friends. Maybe we can rescue Duncan from Brock's place one of these days. Bet he's getting tired of sweeping up."

He nods his head, encouraging Podo as he speaks.

Kendry blushes lightly when Airin mentions the group join of the WLA, at his own urging. He's glad his friends did so, though - and that they did not come to blows.

Concerning the rings, Kendry adds, "We don't know yet what family - or families - the other two rings belong to, though."

As Airin finishes, Kendry says, "All right, Dwight, your turn - unless Aya beats you to it."

Dwight
Tuesday December 20th, 2005 7:20:20 PM

Allowing the others to speak first, Dwight sits back and listens with interest as if he hadn't been there as each halfling tells his/her story.

"Can't say I have much to add, I joined up with this lot by being in the right spot, er wrong spot at the right time, gave what aid I could with my bow."

"Since that time, barely more than a week I believe, I have seen more of the world than I have in my entirely life. I grew up,umm different from most halflings. Never travelled or spent much time with extended family."

"In that small amount of time, I've mastered several skills that I only dreamed of before. Now that my appetite has wettened, I thirst for more adventure. Preferable the safe kind of adventure, with knowledge and food at the end."

Speaking of food, Dwight looks around and refills his cup.

"I would like to say I am rather cautious. I prefer to think things through. I did join the WLA after much consideration. The few friends I had back home would probably say I think to much, and once I have made up my mind on something, it is hard to change it. I call it determined, my pa calls it stubborn." Dwight giggles to himself recalling past argues with his pa.

Kendry
Tuesday December 20th, 2005 11:39:53 PM

"Definitely a thinker, you are," Kendry responds to Dwight.

"Aya?"

Compelling Conversation (Temp DM Cayzle)
Wednesday December 21st, 2005 2:35:17 AM

Aya is very quiet. In fact, now that you think of it, he has been hanging back, not really interacting, with great reserve. He mutters something about not even being sure that the adventuring life is for him.

Leska is eager to hear the stories you all tell. When you are speaking, you have the feeling that she is concentrating only on your words.

She goes over the group person by person as if checking off a list ...

"Guiding the lost to safety. Very noble." She praises Tobias.

"Seeking fame and fortune. A true adventurer!" She smiles at Selithe.

"Following in divine footsteps. Ambitious yet humble." She bows to Podo.

"Adventuring to satisfy a thirst for knowledge and skills -- but cautiously! That makes you a rare bird indeed!" She seems to chuckle at Dwight.

"Not even sure he wants to be an adventurer!" Leska frowns at Aya.

"Kendry here is no mystery! Best of intentions and a nose for conflict! It's good that he's adventuring, because otherwise he'd drive us all crazy." Leska beams at Kendry, while seeming to scold him.

"And Airin, you have answers, but not the ones I seek! Why are you an adventurer? What moves and inspires you? What repulses you?"

"As for the rings," she continues, "I can only guess. But my speculation is that they belonged to a group of adventurers -- humans, elves, and such.

"And what do you want to do next with your lives?"

Kendry
Wednesday December 21st, 2005 3:21:25 AM

"Have dinner!" Kendry answers Leska. Then holds up his hands in self defense, as he's sure she'll slug him in the shoulder.

"And after that," he laughs, "- and maybe finding some good music and a dance - I'd like to see what's up with the WLA," As Airin already has done, he lifts the edge of his cloak to show the emblem pinned on his tunic.

"You see, Tobias, and Aya, the rest of us are members of the Woldian League of Adventurers, started up a while ago by Lars Tokasis, Hero of Annun Far, Scourge of the Dark Lord, Liberator of The Last Fortress. He's a half-elf, and a ranger, like you, Tobias, and a cleric, like you, Aya. Anyway, they have great training, and you can stay at their places, and they encourage adventurers to find Great Things To Do." He takes a bite from his second tart with elderberry jam. "Burgomeister Calfast Rowgold Tunnelly was going to look into getting one of their training outposts set up here in Angel Springs. They're really good at training you things like climbing, handling animals, jumping, riding, and swimming. Also, they'll let you pick for special training in shortsword, longspear, or bastard sword."

That triggers a thought.

"Oh - oh! You should have seen it. Her! We were at Lawni Lens, up on this steep rooftop, way up in the air. And a stoney statue was alive - a gargoyle, right? Name of Teri. Teri Dactyl. Well, it - he? - was pretending to be all buddy-buddy, complaining about the ghosts - then telling us it made the people into ghosts - and then tried to trip me up, and Aya, too. Well, little Airin here," he teases her a bit, "she draws - snick - her bastard sword, and carves a huge line out of the statue. So, he just up and flies away to nurse his lost pebbles. Just then, the ghosts - who had been bothering us earlier, well, they applaud Airin," here the animated halfling makes faint clapping sounds, "and disappear, so as not to bother us any more, I suppose."

He chases a crumb that rolled on to his lap, and puts it into his mouth. "So, you learn how to do that kind of thing at the WLA. Huh. We could've gone over the edge..."

[OOC: And, should one wish to learn more about the WLA, check it out at http://www.woldiangames.com/oshirr/organizations/league.htm]

Podo Danderfluff Pipewood
Wednesday December 21st, 2005 8:59:10 AM

"Oh, that's easy one to answer, not so easy to accomplish!" chuckles Podo from a short distance away.

"Ya, see...the more I adventure, the more I realize that, well, I'd like to be a member of a organization, but you have to be asked first, and I don't know any of the members...so you see, its quiet easy to say what you'd like, and quiet another to acutally achieve it!" says Podo to Leska.

Airin and Fioni
Wednesday December 21st, 2005 11:52:57 AM

Airin smiles at Leska as her answers seem not to be sufficient.

"Why am I an adventurer? well... I certainly did not wanted to become a farmer girl like my mother! I actually sort'o eloped with an Elf Rogue called Aresius. He thought me the adventuring business and as I don't want to return to farming things, this is what I love to do most.

"What moves and inspires me? Hmmm... though one. My love for nature maybe? My love for adventuring? So I guess that leads me to what repulses me as well! I will defend nature when wrong is brought to her, yet I am not unwilling to sacrifice a piece of nature if the Wold will benefit from it. After all, as a Rogue I'm not too stubborn to grab things just because they look expensive...

"I'm the sneaky one, the paranoid one. I love to go stealthy in combat and will try to ambush my prey. My crossbow has kept my enemies at bay more than once.

"Is that what you were looking for?"

Tobias
Wednesday December 21st, 2005 1:56:39 PM

"Noble, huh? Never really thought of it that way, but thank you Leska."

Then, Tobias turns to Kendry and says, "Yes, Pathfinder. In my years in Culverwood, I've become very adept at tracking - anything from local wildlife to wild beasts to orcs to humans. It's always been quite handy and kept me out of a lot of trouble."

"The WLA sounds interesting, and I could always use more training in my combat skills. So, did that Angel Springs chapter of the league get started yet?"

Kendry
Wednesday December 21st, 2005 2:26:52 PM

"Eloped? Eloped??" Kendry looks at Airin as she describes her relationship with this Aresius fellow. "You mean, you're already married?" He has a very worried look on his face. "'Sort of' eloped?"

Though Tobias certainly deserves his attention and an answer, he just shrugs his shoulders in answer to the question of whether an Angel Springs branch of the WLA has started yet. His attention, at the moment, is focused elsewhere.

He just stares at Airin, his mouth hanging open.

Dwight
Wednesday December 21st, 2005 5:46:12 PM

Glad the food is being passed around, takes his share.

"We saw quite a few interesting things in the quiet of the Lens. Planets of worlds beyond our reach yet seemingly close, er closer through the lens. Ghosts themselves. Magic in action and some poor messengers trying to deliver packages. Felt sorry for him, trapped as he was."

Airin and Fioni
Thursday December 22nd, 2005 3:28:32 AM

"HAHAHA!!! No no Kendry my love I am not married! I could not marry to an elf now could I! That's why I said I sort of eloped!! HAHAHA... Aresius saw the potential within me and asked me to become his pupil. I had to disobey my parents will to become a farmer girl for that. So... I sort of eloped! HAHAHA"

She smiles widely at Kendry. The fact that he was so shocked could only mean he would be very sad if this would have been true. Then she whinks and whispers :"No love I'm still waiting to find mr right..." and teasingly softly kisses his lips.

ooc: Ok, learned that the word Elope has a very different meaning than what I had in mind :-D WHUHAHAHAH!!! Forgive me. You english people have such strange words... breed and brood - got those mixed up once allready :-D

Kendry, confused, relieved
Thursday December 22nd, 2005 3:55:32 AM

"Oh. Ah. Not married. Elf?" Kendry stumbles through the words. "'Course not. Sort of eloped. You mean, just got away from your family, in secret. Pupil. Yep. Not married. Whew!" He closes his eyes as Airin's lips brush his own. "Mister Wright?" his eyebrows raise. "Oh, oh, right. Right."

This is all too much for Kendry. "'Scuse, ah, excuse me. I've, I've got to go. To go. To go wash my face, or somethin'."

He heads through the back of the shop, and to another room. It's about five minutes or so before he returns. When he does, his face appears well scrubbed.

Leska Laughs (Temp DM Cayzle)
Thursday December 22nd, 2005 7:56:11 AM

[OOC: Post is a little late today, friends! This is the Wed. DM Post, sorry.]

Leska really enjoys the conversation, and she laughs several times.

When Kendry says he wants dinner -- even as he is having his tea -- Leska laughs and declares that he shall have it! She invites you all to stay for dinner and the night.

And when Podo speaks, Nalfein pipes up from the back of the room, where is is working on the wobbly cabinet leg: "Now, Dad always said a thing is only worth so much as the work you put into it. Persevere, good Podo, and be true to your heart."

A moment later, the mood lightens again as Leska is amused by Airin. "A bundle of contradictions, you are! But that's just what you need to keep things interesting! Good for you, lass!"

In answer to Tobias's question, she says that the town is all a-chatter about the Adventuring Guild, but so far Mayor Calfast has not made any announcement. He has been seen hosting some strange folk in town -- people of other races -- and rumor is that he's negotiating.

"And let me tell you," Leska adds with a chuckle, "there's many in town who are glad to see Cal is doing some bargaining with the Big Folk, rather than just giving the Crescent away, like some kin I could name were saying he would if he got elected.

Leska approves of Dwight's appetite. "There's more of that now, and you'll stay for dinner, as Kendry was saying." She is amazed at his stories, and responds with friendly scepticism -- "Go on, now! Really! That's incredible!"

Finally, your host cannot help but be amused at Kendry's consternation over Airin's choice of words. "A bundle of trouble and a bundle of contradictions! That's a lot of bundling going on!" From her amused tone, there is no mistaking the double meaning in what she says. "Well, of course you'll stay here tonight -- and a good night's sleep is what you'll have!"

Do you choose to stay for dinner and the night? What will you do if not? What are your plans for the morrow?

Dwight
Thursday December 22nd, 2005 5:17:04 PM

"Thank you for the delicious food and warm dry bed tonight. My feet, toes and shoulders appreciate it greatly. I think the last two nights a root has pricked me each night."

Dwight seems uncharacteristically relaxed in such an unfamiliar house, but then again perhaps its the weight of the huge book in his bag.

Selithe
Thursday December 22nd, 2005 9:16:21 PM

Selithe looks to her friends and then Leska, "Okay, sounds good to have a goodnights sleep here however I only stay if I get wokeup to help make breakfast? I might not be a talented cook but I can atleast help put stuff on the tables and such."

Selithe grins and has some work to do anyway if she can work fast enough and will even ask Leska if she might beable to help with some ink and such for card making. Explaining she wants to do something special for her friends.

Kendry
Thursday December 22nd, 2005 11:07:40 PM

Kendry's ears prick up as Leska talks about Calfast's latest doings - and he has a fair idea who some of the family members are who may have spoken disparagingly about him.

"Great, sis. I could go for dinner and a good sleep - all bundled up in a nice downy bed!" he answers, teasing back.

"On the morrow - well, Podo, can you wait until then to talk with that cute priestess of Alemi I mentioned is here in town? Also - I'd like to see if we can't arrange to meet with Calfast. There's still a few items left up in the air it would be great to discuss."

Kendry spends a little time looking over the instruments and toys. Most of them he is acquainted with, but he'll remark on anything he notes as being new or different.

"Oh, Airin - Mungo's library, he says, might have something on the Telperien family. Don't know whether he'll be in town or not, though."

He writes a note to have delivered:
The Right Honorable Burgomeister Calfast Rowgold Tunnelly

We are in town. Lots to talk about. My sister speaks well regarding certain items. Can we meet on the morrow? Tenish or half past would be a good time, or, suggest another more convenient, if you will. Maybe lunch? Staying at WT&M.

Kendry Leafwin Pipewood
If the two lads whom he sent to deliver the ponies to the blacksmith return for their two silver pieces, he pays them (as long as they return the parchment with Master Tim's mark upon it), and asks, "All right - you showed yourselves competent to deliver ponies. Can you take this and make sure it gets to our Burgomeister, Calfast Rowgold Tunnelly? If you are sure you can, I'll pay you a silver each now. If you bring an answer tonight, or no later than tomorrow morning, then I'll pay one gold piece. Understand?" He makes sure he has the boys' names, and has them repeat the instructions to his satisfaction.

Airin and Fioni
Friday December 23rd, 2005 5:32:55 AM

Airin chuckles as she sees Kendry's reaction and hears Leska's remark. (ooc. thanks for the explanation link!)

A big yawn escapes Airin's mouth, and Fioni flew up towards the ceiling and seems to have found a nice and cosy spot somwhere up there. Airin can tell she allready tucked her tiny head under her feathers and prepares for the night.

"Good night dear Fioni" Airin whispers and then she looks at her friends and says: "Guess we'd better do the same thing no? We've been in quite a few situations over the past few days (hours?) so I'd be in for a good night sleep..." and then whispers to leska: "bundling" and whinks.

OOS to DM Cayzle: I asked SUBS on the LnB but other than Kim no one would be willing to apparently. I know Kim has a very busy scheduel so I may not be able to submit a post every day next week. Would slowing things down a little be possible so that missing a post would not be too serious? Thanks a lot!

Podo Danderfluff
Friday December 23rd, 2005 3:19:36 PM

Podo says, " Sure, I'd be honored to be your guest. I think tomorrow I'll head out and look for a temple of Alemi!"

Dwight
Friday December 23rd, 2005 4:36:48 PM

Sitting back and relaxing, Dwight continues to listen to the ongoing conversations and plans being made for tomorrow.

"I'm not in a particular rush for anything, but would like to also be awoken early in the morning to do a small site walk before breakfast."

Selithe
Friday December 23rd, 2005 7:38:43 PM

Selithe spends the night in her room, breaking out her card making kit and going to work quickly and even using a pres spell to help her with her work if need be. She giggles as she makes the first few cards and looks them over before continuing.

Come morning Selithe will help Leska if she comes to get her up but otherwise will wake and work more on the card early as she wants to have them finished.

Once she is done she comes out of the room she is staying in and grins as she looks to each person, "I have a suprise for all of you since I have only alittle spare money on hand and All Saint Wold Day is coming up I made a gift for you all."

Selithe walks over to Kendry first and pulls out a single playing card and hands it to Kendry to show a picture of him in a king's outfit and the heart symbol on the card to show it as the king of hearts.

Next she walks to Airin and hands another heart card to her showing her in a queens outfit along with Fiona on the card and this one is the queen of hearts.

Next Selithe hands a card to Podo also and this one showing a image of him on it with his hands clasped infront of him and it is designed like the jack of diamonds.

Selithe then hands the last two cards out, one to Dwight. His card shows him on it also but in a night fighters outfit and the card is noted as the ace of clubs.

Last Selithe hands a card to Tobias which shows him in the shadows and on the card king of spades.

Selithe smiles and shrugs, "Not much I know but I designed them myself, with alittle help of my magic and I hoped you all would like them."

Selithe looks to Nalfein and Leska, "I promise to work on your guys soon also."

Doings in Angel Springs (Temp DM Cayzle)
Friday December 23rd, 2005 11:40:36 PM

[OOC: Gosh Darn It! What a bad example I am setting! I'm really sorry I missed a day ... work fell on me like a wall, I overslept, etc etc. Anyhow, apologies!

Also, if you want to be posting daily (and I promise that that includes me!), then go visit Calfast and have a chat with him. If you expect to post intermittantly or seldom, then stay at the toy shop or go off on your own in town. Okay?]

Not only do Kendry's efforts to recruit young boys as messengers (Jim and Erl by name) pay off in spades, but he gets back a message from the new Burgomeister: Looking forward to seeing you and hearing your latest adventures! Meet me tomorrow at the Bell Tower, when the bell rings ten.

In the evening:

Seeing Airin's yawn, Leska says, "How rude I have been! Let me set you up for the night." There are two guest rooms (one looks like a closet) and the shop floor, made up with featherbeds and blankets and pillows.

Most of the party is more than ready to sleep deep. But Selithe, ever the night owl, is busy with her crafting!

In the morning Dwight takes an early walk. Selithe, bright eyed even this early, helps in the kitchen and offers some gifts.

Podo visits the Temple of Alemi by the Old Rivergate. He finds that the temple is abuzz with the story of an itinerant preacher of Alemi who is giving sermons in the markets of town! One young acolyte, seeing Podo, says, "Come on! Everyone is going to see what this fellow has to say! He's supposed to be a holy hermit, but a little crazy!" Do you follow the acolyte?

Other actions? Who goes to visit the Mayor at 10? Who stays back?

Without even given it as much as a seconds worth of thought, Podo agrees with the young Acolytes suggestion saying," I'd love to hear the words of this preacher of Alemi. Where's he now?"

With his last words barely fresh off his lips, Podo follows this acolyte to hear the words of this preacher speak of Alemi.

"Why, thank you so much Selithe! The card is great."

And, Tobias decides to go with the party to the meeting with the mayor.

Kendry
Saturday December 24th, 2005 5:15:43 PM

Kendry is pleased with Jim and Erl, and pays each a gold piece upon receipt of Calfast's invitation. "Good work, lads." He passes on to the others the Burgomeister's invitation for ten the next morning.

After dinner and some conversation, catching up on family news, Kendry says good night to all, and Airin last. Then, his bedding now made to look like a tent, he sits under the blanket and, with a sunrod providing light, writes in his journal for an hour before putting it away, and sleeping soundly.

In the morning, he looks at the card that Selithe gives him. He chuckles. He gives her a kiss on the forehead, looks at the card again, and gives her a big hug. He then takes a look at the card she gives to Airin, and turns it into a group hug. He enjoys seeing what she did for Podo, Dwight and Tobias, as well. "Talent and thoughtfulness, all wrapped up in one pretty package!" he compliments her.

After breakfast, wishing Podo well as he leaves for the temple, and making sure that his dog Cheann and Selithe's dog Gra are fed, too, he dons his new green entertainer's outfit, and invites all who will to accompany him to meet with Calfast. He leaves some of his gear behind, but does bring his knapsack and his journals inside. "Sure would be handy to have one of those haversacks that hold lots more than they look to hold," he comments to Dwight.

Airin and Fioni (by Kim for Inge)
Monday December 26th, 2005 2:33:30 AM

"What, Kendry - you don't want to bundle up tonight?" Airin asks coyly as he comes to say goodnight.

She gives him a quick kiss, though, then says as if rebuking him for such a suggestion, "No, Kendry, sleep for the night is a much better idea. Don't let that Leska put strange ideas in your head, now." She turns and flounces off to bed.

Airin thinks over the past days and weeks. Travel, investigations, pursuit, combat, friends and acquaintances coming and going. Songs and poems and burgeoning affection. Puzzles and riddles and mystery. Discovery, and meals on the road, and unexpected laughter. She sighs. What more things will come to pass as new days come? She falls asleep in pleasant anticipation.

In the morning she hopes that Podo will find what he seeks as he follows that acolyte.

"Why, Selithe - thank you!" She gives her friend a big hug as she looks over her card, and the others', too.

"Yes, I'll join you in a visit to Calfast," Airin agrees. "Glad you're coming, Tobias. What about you, Dwight and Selithe? And what has happened now to Aya?"

Fioni is disappointed at not having found any mice around the shop so far. He squawks his hunger to Airin.

Monday December 26th, 2005 2:41:54 PM

"Well, if it's just the three of us, then that's fine," Kendry answers Tobias. "But I'm not going to stop anyone from joining us." He checks one more time with Selithe and, if he is there, Dwight, to see if they want to come along. He'll leave two notes - one for Podo and, if he's still out, one for Dwight, letting them know they can join the group at the Bell Tower.

Selithe
Monday December 26th, 2005 7:22:04 PM

Selithe smiles and hugs Airin and Kendry and the others who really liked her gift and smiles brightly, "Well, it wasn't much but I thought it would be more personal like this and mean more."

Selithe nods, "I'll come with ya brother, specially to make sure little romeo of a brother is on his best behavior." Selithe gives Airin and Kendry both a wink as she enjoys picking on her brother and Airin who she considers her best friend.

The Street Preacher (DM Cayzle)
Monday December 26th, 2005 9:20:20 PM

Podo finds he is led to a central market of the town. There he sees that his friends have just arrived as well! The market is just by the Bell Tower.

The others who go to the Bell Tower are met by Calfast. But the newly elected leader is clearly upset.

"What can I do? This preacher is going to ruin everything!" He does not even stop to talk ... he goes to stand at the back of the crowd that is taking in the street preacher's words.

The preacher is a dwarf, clad in what may once have been a white tunic and pants, but which now are grey and brown with the stains of the road. But the dwarf's scruffy appearance is not what you notice when you first see him. The overall impression one gets looking at this fellow is that of Health, Strength, Vigor, and Life. He almost glows with energy, enthusiasm, and elan. His smile is infectious, and when he chuckles, people all around break out into laughter. So fixed are you on his aura that at first you do not realize what he is saying. Then it sinks in, like biting into an apple and tasting beef. It's not what you expect, that's for sure, although there's nothing wrong with beef ... or is there?

The dwarf says:

My friends, I have defended the weak and innocent in my day, and I was glad to do it. But then I have travelled on. Have I gone back to see those I protected before? No. What if they need protecting in the future? I could settle down with one village, but what about all the other villages?

I admire those who help others, and protecting the weak is what our Lord Domi urges us to do. But there are not enough adventurers to go around. How many adventurers do you folks have in this town? When was the last time they came to help you? What if you needed them and they were not there?

The dwarf pauses to beckon some children up to him. he hands out candies and touches one who walks funny. The dwarf's hands glow briefly, and the child's gait now matches that of the other healthy children.

How much better to heal the sick than to do things for them! How much better to make the weak strong than to promise them protection. What if the protection fails? Adventurers are always going off on Adventures! That's why they call them that! How much better if you could protect yourselves!

The dwarf continues in this vein, seeming to suggest that depending on adventurers to protect when enemies call is not the best idea.

Kendry joins the public conversation  d20+6=22
Monday December 26th, 2005 9:55:59 PM

"My best behavior, sister? Why, what other behavior would I display, but my best?" Kendry answers his sister, and enjoying the banter.

Once at the central market, he waves at Podo, then, seeing Calfast, says, "Good day, Burgomeister." But when he hears Calfast's concern, he turns to listen to what is causing him worry.

"Well done, bravo!" calls Kendry. "Bless you, good dwarf, for lending your healing hands to strengthen that child." He steps forward, wending his way through the crowd, halfway to the preacher, as he says, "To strengthen ourselves, and to aid one another in that wise, is good, indeed.

"And how true that there are not enough adventurers about. I've thought so, myself. We do have the militia, though, do we not? Yes, some of them have gained martial skills by living the adventuring life for a time, but now they serve here, working to ensure domestic tranquility, and employing the skills they gained for our mutual benefit."

The bard continues talking as he moves to a place perhaps ten feet from the dwarf. "How would you answer this, though, good fellow? There are many farmers in our towns, and even some who live here in Angel Springs farm the fields round about. Well, let's say my wagon wheel gets broken. Do I complain that not everyone is a cartwright? Do I lament that there are too many farmers and not enough blacksmiths? Or, when the need arises, do I not seek out the one, or ones, who have the skills needed for the task at hand? And then enjoy a good meal, thanks to the farmers, and grocers, and cooks, as I wait for my wagon to be fixed.

"Should we all be blacksmiths?" he asks - gesturing with a salute toward Master Tim, whom he sees in the gathered audience. "Should we all be milkmaids? Shall we all be storekeepers," and here he nods respectfully to greengrocer Palco, "or each one a militia member, or all scribes? Each of these is an honorable, a needful, occupation.

"You yourself were an adventurer. I dare say that many of the skills and talents you now share with us come from the time you spent adventuring. Is that not so? Domi and, I'd wager, Alemi, have favored you.

"Do these beloved deities mandate that there should be no division of labor, no differentiation of skills?"

"I do not mean to deprecate what you say - only to understand the thread of your argument," Kendry says, his face both open and friendly. "What is your name, that we may properly thank you, healer?"

Eager to explore, partakes a good breakfast. Others have already left, but Dwight finds the note and heads in the tower's general direction to make it by the 10 bell.

He stops along the way to listen to peoples idle chat, look at the various shops and homes.

"Up with you," she tells Fioni, letting the hawk ascend to the rooftops. Maybe she'll catch a mouse or something to assuage her hunger. Airin eventually works herself around to the other side of the dwarf, maybe fifteen feet away. She scans the crowd, alert to any potential threats, and just barely following the thread of what the dwarf and Kendry are saying.

Meet Zardock (Temp DM Cayzle)
Wednesday December 28th, 2005 6:19:34 AM

Kendry is the only one brave enough to step forward and talk with the dwarf. Dwight, Podo, Airin, and Selithe are content to keep alert and scan the area for possible dangers.

The crowd is enjoying the spectacle, and some people are nodding their heads at the dwarf's words.

When Kendry speaks, the dwarf walks over, replacing his preaching voice with a conversational one. His words still carry to most of those nearby.

"Hello! I am Zardock -- and, as you deduce, a follower of Alemi and Domi. My friend, I fear that I have done a bad job in my sermonizing. No, I do not think all people should have the same job! And of course people in a community have different roles, and means of making a living."

"But in a dangerous area, I do think that all able-bodied adults should be in the militia. That's what a militia is -- not a regular job, but training enough to be able to take arms in self defense when needed. That's what makes a militia different from an army -- an army is made of soldiers, full-time professionals. A militia is made of farmers and bakers and coopers and shepherds -- ready to lift a staff or a sling to defend the community in times of trouble."

"Don't get me wrong. I think many adventurers are heroes! But an adventurer may be fighting a dragon -- or be in the dragon's belly! Just when he or she is needed most."

"I came here because I heard that there was a vote, and the vote decided against the militia and in favor of depending on adventurers. I just want to warn the people to be wary of depending on those who may not be dependable."

"Thank you for your kind words, friend. And for letting me explain myself better. May I beg the favor of asking your name?"

Selithe
Wednesday December 28th, 2005 1:58:20 PM

Selithe leans on her staff as she listens to what is being said and smiles some to herself, "Everyone can be a hero in a time of need easy enough. If what your fighting for is important enough even a common person can become a hero." Selithe shrugs, "Farmer defending his land can be labled a hero, a priest speaking out against the wrongs of things when others would not could be a hero. It's not really a fact of stregnth in arms or the knowledge of them that allows anyone to stand on their own two feet and defend themselves, it comes down to the desire to keep, protect or strive for what you want, what you need and such. As they say, sometimes the pen is mighter then the sword and also sometimes the plow shear is stronger then the sword too. Of course not all halflings are the fighting type I understand too."

She smiles and shrugs, "Not doing a meaning nothing by my words but I do agree with what you say sir. The people should not in all cases turn to others but look to themselves because sooner or later their heros will have moved on, or died and the people will of grown to lazy or dependant on their heros to save them." selithe shrugs and leans on her staff again as she relaxes some.

Tobias
Wednesday December 28th, 2005 3:12:44 PM

Tobias tries to move slowly closer through the crowd, trying not to leave too much distance between himself and the other party members.

As he listens to the discussion, Tobias nods along with what Zardock has to say, while keeping an eye on those around him - to see who is siding with Zardock and who is listening to Kendry.

Podo  d20+3=7

Podo continues to sense for motive (7) from the dwarf.

Kendry  d20+6=10 d20+6=25
Thursday December 29th, 2005 4:49:12 AM

"Well, there was a vote, indeed. Oh - and my name is Kendry. Well met, Zardock!

"I don't think that it rightly can be claimed that the vote was against the militia. I believe that our new Burgomeister is in favor of a well-trained and prepared militia.

"But I do think that our leader, an estimable hobbit our people elected, recognizes that a broad array of resources is better able to deal with a broad array of threats.

"Against, say, a pack of orcs, a good and well-prepared citizenry can defend well. But what if, say, a dragon were to come against Hovel, or Humble's Ford? Would not a team of skilled adventurers with access to combat prowess and powers above the norm have better odds than my brothers and sisters armed with pitchforks?"

Kendry senses this argument is not swaying the people [Diplomacy 10], so he decides to change his tack. He turns from addressing Zardock, to more directly addressing the crowd. "You know, many of you, that there are druids who have opposed our mothers and wives entering the Culverwood to birth our children. Have you not heard of this?" he asks, looking for a response.

"It is true. As a matter of fact, my very own cousin, Penelope Pipewood, married to Ellis Greentree, who owns a livery in Hovel, well, Penelope was preparing recently to give birth to a child at the Great Whistler Oak in the Culverwood. Have any of you cousins, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles born there? Yes - I see that hand - oh, and you? Yes, I see your hands, too. Several. Oh - congratulations on the wee one, missus!"

Kendry's face grows serious. "Some druids were of a mind to stop her. And these same druids tried to burn down the tree! Yes, the Great Whistler Oak! They were going to burn it down, and with our womenfolk, and young fathers, siblings, midwives, and wee babes inside! They prepared spells, and cast balls of flames at the tree.

"Imagine that! They wanted to burn down our tree! Using their magical powers, they threw balls of fire at The Whistler Oak.

[The storyteller in Kendry comes more to the fore [diplomacy: 25]]

"But then what happened? Do you know? There were adventurers there. And they opposed these druids who would have killed. Killed our own people.

"Because the adventurers were there, Penelope and Ellis now have a baby girl - Clara Alilliama Domiselithe Airina Marigold Pipewood Greentree. And a sweet wee one she is!

"That same day, these adventurers witnessed the birth of the one who calls himself the Fae King - Eberyon. This Eberyon grew up before their eyes in a matter of an hour or two. And then he began to wreak enormous destruction. What did the adventurers do? They opposed him. Opposed Eberyon himself!

"Though some of the druids were bad, many of them were good. The chief druid joined the adventurers in battling against this power, and many lives were saved as a result.

"No only that, but the druids came later to the Great Whistler Oak, and confessed their sorrow at what some of their brethren had done - and gave a promise.

"Do you know what that promise is? That the druids of the Culverwood no longer will try to keep us halflings from birthing our children in the forest that surrounds us.

"Do you know why that promise was made? It is because there were adventurers there at hand, who defended the hobbits and our ways. AND - there was one of the leaders of our militia there, too. We now have this promise, because adventurers, working with a militia member, were at hand."

Kendry turns his attention to Zardock, but still projects his voice that all may hear. "We need more such as you, good dwarf, who will lend a hand of healing and encouragement for our community." And turning to the crowd, he says, "And we need more of you - to continue building our community by your good works, but also to learn better to defend ourselves. Some in the militia. And some as adventurers.

"Zardock - it is not either / or - it is both / and." Facing the crowd, he repeats: "It is both / and. We need BOTH the militia, AND adventurers. We need the militia, to defend our hearths and homes. And we need adventurers, who can keep eyes and ears open to what is happening in the wider Wold. Both - And!

"But there may be one among us better able to address your concerns than my humble words."

Agreement all Around (DM Cayzle)
Friday December 30th, 2005 7:39:56 PM

Calfast steps up and joins in the conversation. "Oh, yes, my good dwarf, please rest assured that I am deeply concerned about the well being of all the inhabitants of the Crescent Valley. I am Burgomeister Calfast Rowgold Tunnelly, winner of the election you mention. And yes, although i actively encourage adventurers to visit our valley and make their bases here, especially home-grown adventurers like these fine young people here, I have to say that I have not abandoned our traditional militia organizations, which I continue to support."

"If anything," the Burgomeister continues, "I have moved us from a complete reliance on militias to a balanced dependance on both. The emphasis on adventuring is new to our valley, though, so it gets all the press."

The holy-but-grimy dwarf takes in all of this with a smile that grows and grows.

To Selithe, he says, "You see my point perfectly, miss!" He repeats her words back to her: " 'The people should not in all cases turn to others but look to themselves because sooner or later their heros will have moved on.' That's what I'm trying to say!"

Dwight and Podo concentrate on the dwarf. He is clearly sincere in his concern for the people of the valley, and glad to hear other opinions.

Kendry's stirring tales thrill the dwarf as much as the crowd! "Those are some adventures, to be sure! I'd love to hear more about them over a pint or two of the local best!"

Kendry has more to say, though [OOC add from personal correspondence] ... "Ah, but Zardock - there is a flaw in your reasoning. What if there is, say, a hero from outside the Valley, who intervenes and helps save our people when the need is great. Once the need is past, if that hero has gone on to other places, well, has he still not served a purpose? By saving our lives in a moment of peril?

"And had that 'here today, gone tomorrow' adventurer not come at the moment of great need, then how many of us might be gone today, and gone forever?"

Kendry holds up his finger to add one more argument to the mix. "And, cannot adventurers with broad experience help train up some of our own kin in martial skills, and strategy and tactics?"

Zardock sees no problem with that. "If adventurers are here in your moment of need, then wonderful! If not, then maybe your community will be saved by a militia, or by other contingency that you have prepared." He continues, "I am glad to hear that you have not selected either one or the other, as I had feared from rumor. A balance is better. But a stool cannot stand on two legs, and I hope you will not mind a suggestion that there can be more than two solutions. Not just 'both' but several!"

"Myself, I was once an adventurer, but now I simply travel from place to place, offering healing, protection, and what small wisdom my sermons might contain. I do not seek adventure, although sometimes it seeks me out. Rather, for me, life is a journey, a literal journey, a quest that will never end, but is an end in itself."

Some in the group do not focus on the dwarf's words, but look around the crowd and the area. Yes, surely those proud-looking strutters over there are militia members using the dwarf's sermon to brag a little. And, if you have ever been to this town before, you might notice that there are several trees growing in the town that you do not remember, but which are clearly too old to have grown up just since your last visit.

Kendry
Friday December 30th, 2005 11:24:15 PM

"Well, then, say on, friend, say on," encourages Kendry, curious to hear what the dwarf might think are additional legs the 'stool' needs. He thinks he might like this fellow. "Oh, and Zardock - this is my cousin, Podo. If I heard correctly, he wanted to seek you out this morning."

He nods to Airin, and gives her a wink, as if to say, 'Thanks for keeping watch.' He marks Selithe, Tobias and Dwight, as well.

As the dwarf explains himself, Kendry sidles up to Calfast. "So, shall we ask him to join us for a pint after he explains himself?" he asks quietly. "Or invite him to do so later in the day?"

Smiles All Around (DM Cayzle)
Monday January 2nd, 2006 11:28:51 PM

Calfast nods at Kendry and offers the dwarf a hand. "Welcome to the Crescent Valley! And I think it would be a grand idea to continue our discussion over a few pints. Talking is thirsty work."

Airin sees that a crowd of a couple dozens has gathered all told, and most are eager and engaged. Whether they seek news of adventuring, or entertainment, or healing, or what, she is not sure.

Dwight looks for people in possible distress, but the folk are happy, or at least interested, and none seem to be suffering or even angry.

Tobias pays extra attention to the representatives of the local militia. It seems that two or three militia members are eager to make the dwarf's visit a smooth one. They look on protectively -- one seems to have run off, maybe to tell friends of what the dwarf was preaching.

Podo has some pertinent questions, and the dwarf's ears perk up. "Please join us," he tells Podo, "and over a few drinks we can talk in detail."

Here in the market, one entrepreneur has set up a beer tent. The party (or those who wish it) find themselves sitting on benches under an awning, pints in hand and stress ebbing away. The crowd dissipates, and the dwarf seems even more at ease.

"The militia, the adventurers, these people do their best to protect the innocent and keep evil at bay. But their methods are in the end the same ones that the Enemy uses ... they kill people. That seems a shame to me. In fact, in my opinion, using such methods inevitably taints any victory."

"So another leg on the stool of civilization, that might set the noble races off from monsters, is the tool of life. I believe that we can refrain from killing, to the benefit of our souls, and to the weal of the Wold when those who were evil sometimes see their error and change their ways."

"That is the teaching of Alemi and Domi, I believe, and my friends agree. We work to bring news of this third leg to good folk everywhere."

He turns to Podo. "Does this begin to answer your questions, friend?"

As the dwarf and Podo speak, Calfast whispers to Kendry that his offer is fine but unnecessary. They can talk more about that later.

Airin casually gets closer to the group of people that stands a little further. With her crosbow on her back, her bastard sword secured and clad in black leather armor she sure looks more like an adventurer than any other commoner in this City. As she stands close to the group one of them casts a quick look at her. She smiles back and nods saying :"haha them three lads seem to have a way with words no?"
Then she turns her face back to look to Kendry, Calfast and Zardock. From the corner of her eye she does try to see how the group react to her appearance. Even though it seems she's closely listening to what Kendry and the rest are saying her ears are finely attuned to hear the whispers of the group to her left.

To make things better, she whistles lightly and within seconds the beautiful Fioni comes landing on Airin's arm. "hehe", Airin thinks to herself, "never know what a little showing off can do..."

Tuesday January 3rd, 2006 3:24:38 PM

Selithe listens to what is being said while pulling out her pipe and beginning to fill it and lights it up. She stands and listens to the talks while puffing on her pipe some, the talks interesting but of course she has always been a action type of girl and she grins at the thought of card games and stuff to come. She does glance to Airin when she calls Fiona and chuckles and moves over, running a finger very gently down the birds back, "Your little bird is still really nice. I can't wait till I finally go about getting mine. I was thinking and thought I would wait till I can get a special familiar, something one of a kind."

Kendry  d20+3=20
Tuesday January 3rd, 2006 4:56:59 PM

Kendry notices that Tobias heads off down the street, apparently following someone [Spot: 20]. He thinks a prayer, 'Wardd be with you.'

-------
"You know, Zardock, there are many times when restraint in use of force is appropriate - measuring one's response to other's wrongdoing," Kendry answers. "And mercy is a mark of goodness - just as justice is a mark of goodness.

"When injustice and evil can be overcome through peaceful means, then that is wonderful. There are occasions, however, where causing the death of active evildoers will result in far less death - especially death of innocents - than were they allowed to live. I am for peace - and therefore will war against those who seek to disturb the peace. Were all good and kind, deadly force would not be a sad, but occasional, necessity.

"I am optimistic, and disposed toward thinking well of others. But what if they show themselves wicked, and kill some of my companions - such as happened when a group of goblins killed our shipmates? Then, when we caught up to them, and the boat and goods they had stolen, I was prepared, if possible, to use more peaceful means to overcome them, and recover the captain's livelihood. But the leader commanded the death of my cousin, and it came down to a choice - kill the thieving, murdering goblins, or let die some or all of us. After taking out the bloodthirsty leader and a few others bearing weapons, we offered the survivors the option to surrender and live.

"One of the goblins involved in their initial attack is now our good friend, and lives here in the valley. His name is Bobbles. Another friend is Lomar, a lonely ogre we came across in our travels. I would rather make friends than enemies. And would rather live and let live. Nevertheless, Zardock, I cannot, in good conscience, fully adopt the position you hold."

Kendry takes a good swallow of beer. "However, I'm open to further persuasion. And I am quite open to learning non-fatal means of constraining evildoers, where possible."

Knowing that Podo and the dwarf have some things to discuss, after his initial response, Kendry allows them to focus on chatting with each other.

He gives Airin a little wave and a wink as she shows off.

---------
To Calfast, he says, "There are a few items I'd like to talk with you about. Oh, by the way, how is your daughter, Pawlie, doing?" Kendry had shared a dance with her the night of the election.

Listening to Zardock's words and answers, Podo nods in agreement with most of what Zardock says. Podo will use his skill in diplomacy while engaged in conversation with Zardock and the other's in and around the beer tent. (13)

Answering Zardock, Podo says, "Yes sir, these are at least the teachings of Domi, as a follower of Domi, I do not know for sure if these are also Alemi's teaching but what I know of the pair, it is probably so. The two were inseparable."

"I would like to learn more of Alemi's teachings and was looking for his Temple when I was asked to join the crowd to hear your words. As a Monk and follower of Domi, much of what I have learned must also be Alemi's teachings. I always refrain from killing unless there is no choice. It pains me to know I might be the cause of the end of a life, whatever that life might be. Funny, really, I wasn't always this way. My maturity has really blossomed in the days since leaving the Monastery." says Podo between sips of beer.

"Zardock, how long has it been since you've come to understand this 3rd leg of the stool of humanity?"

While waiting for his response, Podo offers to pay for another round of beer. The offer is made to anyone seated at the table.

How to win friends and influence people (DM Cayzle)
Wednesday January 4th, 2006 7:34:46 AM

Airin's posing draws the attention of several people from the dispersing crowd. "Huh! Are you an adventurer?" "What do you think about what that dwarf said about adventurers?" Can I pet your bird?" "Does he bite?" "What adventures have you gone on?"

Airin's audience is mostly younger halflings!

Tobias follows the militia member, who runs into a tavern and shouts, "There's a hermit dwarf what says the militia is better'n adventurers! Come hear him preach in the market!" Seems to Tobias that in a moment more people will run out of the Tavern and towards the market.

Selithe admires Airin's friend and thinks about familiars.

Dwight takes advantage of an opportunity to doze in the sun.

Kendry says that mercy is good, but seems a little sceptical about its practicality. He tells the story of an ogre and a goblin the party encountered.

Podo seeks more detail about the dwarf's philosophy and history.

Zardock smiles at Kendry. "Well, my friend, the martial arts of attacking without killing are not well known in the Wold, and even more rare is the ability to prompt a change of heart. Charm and Compulsion magic prompt no true reformation of character, but some are talented at actually changing the soul and convincing evil-doers to see the error of their ways. The Troubadours of Flower are especially skilled in this. You know -- Kendry, is it? -- you have a bit of the silver tongue that Troubadours cultivate. You might want to consider that, if you are serious about changing hearts rather than simply stopping them from beating."

"But my point is that there are techniques that can be used to capture and convince, rather than kill."

"And you are absolutely right. My way is not the only way! It is only another leg. Yes, it is sad, but some times there is no solution but death to an evildoer. In those times, be glad that heroes of the Wold can step up and be counted. We need them all."

He answers Podo. "I was a monk and a healer before I joined the Walkers, whose members practice the philosophy of the third way. Since them I have also learned from those who follow Domi, and become one of his Hands."

"I must say, young fellows, that your attitudes are refreshing, especially for adventurers. I am glad to have such an enlightening conversaton,"

Airin and Fioni
Wednesday January 4th, 2006 9:50:18 AM

Airin has always been fond of kids so she's amused by their aroused intrest in whatever it is Airin does for a living.

"No please do not pet Fioni, she - yes lad it's a she... how I can tell... euhm... dunno but she is... - she looks really nice and friendly, but mind those rzor sharp fangs she has! She can rip a rodent apart faster than you could imagine! Oh I do remember how I first met the little hawk... hahaha... she tried to open up my nose and I wacked her unconscious with my sap!"

Fioni gives Airin a look as if she understood what airin was talking about and gives her a little bite in her hand as if to say :"don't laugh with me! It's because I like you that I hang out with you... not the other way around!"
and she flies up again to look for a more quiet place where she can go hunting mice...

Airin's eyes -full of admiration for the bird- follow Fioni as she flies up high and so do some of the youngsters.

When one of them asks how she feels about what Kendry and Zardoch have been talking about Airin agrees with Kendry (what would you have expected ;-) )

"I do not carry this blade and crossbow to chat with some of the vile creatures that dwell the Wold lad. When some stand in my way or threathen me or my friends I WILL not hesitate to pierce its heart with a bolt.
Oh don't worry... I'm not a 'big' adventurer at all... I've only met some goblins, an ogre, a few fey that went berserk, oh yeah and some sort of Satyr... things like that. No big nasty monsters. Or maybe that nasty gargloyle back in that deserted castle I was in last."

Airin enjoyes making vague remarks like that. She's telling the truth though, she always does. She's not certain if these youngsters have ever seen any of the creatures she mentions so maybe even the sound of a nasty goblin could pour some respect in these youngsters.

"What about you guys and girls? You all wanna become adventurers? The Wold out there is full of magnificent places to visit, dangerous monsters to overcome and hordes of treasures to find... I bet there are some among you who would like to become a bold adventurer at one time no? Tell me about yourselves."

Tobias
Wednesday January 4th, 2006 12:14:30 PM

Hearing that the militia member invited others to hear the dwarf, Tobias double-times it back to the market, where he left the others. As he enters the market, he slows down in hopes that folks there don't take too much notice of him.

He finds the rest of the group, walks up to them, and whispers in Kendry's ear, "We're going to have company soon. More militia members from a nearby tavern."

Then, Tobias introduces himself to Zardock. "Hello, Zardock. My name is Tobias, a ranger of Culverwood. And, I recently fell in with this band of halflings your talking with. That was a very interesting sermon you just gave."

Kendry
Wednesday January 4th, 2006 2:57:14 PM

Thoroughly enjoying this exchange, Kendry finds himself incubating a new song. When Tobias forewarns him of the additional audience, he thinks quickly, and begins quietly to hum a little tune. Quietly, mind you, as he pulls out parchment and inkpen, and jots down some verses.

Podo, a little taken aback at the dwarf's answers, stutters, "You're both a Hand of Domi and a Walker??!" "WOW! How does one become all those professions in one lifetime?!" wonders Podo aloud to Zardock.

Once Podo recovers from his momentary shock at the revelation of Zardock's accomplishments, Podo will seek to learn more about these professions from Zardock when the opportunity presents itself. Trying to be diplomatic (2), Podo asks Zardock, "How did you transform yourself from adventurer Monk to both a Hand of Domi & a Walker?"

Selithe moves to a free table and sits down and spreads the cards out, doing a fancy shuffle before passing out the cards to any who decide to join her. Song and Style (DM Cayzle)
Thursday January 5th, 2006 5:03:10 AM

The dwarf sees that Kendry is inthe throes of composition, and he eagerly awaits the result!

Airin enjoys talking with her admirers, but is interrupted by her friend, Selithe, who calls her over for a game.

Tobias brings word that more militia are on the way. Zardock thanks him for his kind words. "I came here to help people think. I hope that's what I have done."

In Dwight's dream, the tree of his youth bends down to help him climb. The branches move to offer surer footing. The wind whispers through the leaves, and they seem to be laughing.

But maybe it is the holy dwarf's laughter that invades Dwight's dream. Zardock chuckles at Podo's amazement. "Ha! The elders at two temples have laughed at me! They say I am too flighty! But I don't mind."

He goes into detail with Podo on his background. "I started as a monk [OOC: 2 levels], then a cleric honoring both Domi and Alemi [3 levels gave him the ability to cast CMW]. Then I became a healer [two levels], and about that time I met some Walkers [joined the organization but did not take the PrC yet]. After that I trained and traveled with Walkers [2 levels with the Walker PrC, giving him the +6 BAB needed to be a Hand]. And just recently I joined the Hands [1 level].

[OOC: Thus Zardock is a Monk2/Cleric3/Healer2/Horizon Walker 2/Hand 1. He is tenth level, but his BAB is only +6. On the other hand, his saves are godlike!]

Selithe notices that most of the patrons are hanging on the dwarf's words, while trying to be subtle about it.

Kendry - Song: Three Legs of the Stool  d20+10=23 d20+10=20 d20+10=25
Thursday January 5th, 2006 7:10:20 AM

Kendry looks over what he has hurriedly scratched on parchment. "Say, I've been thinking about what you've taught regarding the three legs of - of defense, I suppose. Now, it's not too deep, nor philosophical, but, tell me, good Zardock, if this little ditty at least gets the gist of things," Kendry says as he tunes his lute for a moment.

"I call it Three Legs of the Stool," he announces, "and it goes like this."
THREE LEGS OF THE STOOL
by Kendry Leafwin Pipewood
(Crescent Valley Halfling Adventurer)

A milking stool it hath legs three
The better for to sit you see
For if one breaks then best watch out
The maid upon the ground will pout
Fa la la la-la la-lee
"All right friends - that is the chorus. Try singing it together with me," the bard encourages the audience, especially as more militia members arrive. He plays it a couple of times to make sure they have it - and turns his face to a mirthful pout on the last line before the Fa-la-las. Then he weaves in the verses, and calls on the gathered crowd to join in again for the chorus.
Chorus
A milking stool it hath legs three
The better for to sit you see
For if one breaks then best watch out
The maid upon the ground will pout
Fa la la la-la la-lee

The militia gather every week
To practice skills and polish feats
Lest if some foe should charge on in
We hobbits take it on the chin
Fa la la la-la la-leek

Home-grown militia are the wall
'Gainst invaders large and small
Our peaceful valley they protect
Earn our gratitude, respect
Fa la la la-la la-lall

Chorus

Adventurers are bold and brave
Delve wilderness and darkened cave
It's they that face the far-off threat
Earn fame and fortune by their sweat
Fa la la la-la la-lave

They fight goblins winning treasure
But learn the genuine measure
Wise ones' insight us sustains
For something ventured something gained
Fa la la la-la la-leasure

Chorus

The way of peace is tried by few
But friends and allies it accrues
When love o'ercomes the villain's heart
He can a new and good life start
Fa la la la-la la-lew

Alemi's ways are just and fair
Bold Domi's courage bans despair
Flower's fair virtue quickens love
These three give guidance from above
Fa la la la-la la-lair
"Now, there's something different on the final chorus. Sing with me the first two lines, then listen carefully to the third and fourth," he instructs the crowd.
Final Chorus
A milking stool it hath legs three
The better for to sit you see
If all three hold then we can drink
Of milkmaid's pail then kiss her cheek!

Fa la la la-la la-lee
Fa la la la-la la-lee
Kendry grins, and gives Airin a quick peck on her cheek, then leads the crowd one last time in the final chorus!

Being suddenly interrupted by her close friend Selithe, Airin invites some of the youngsters for a game of cards with Selithe, while Airin herself will check out how the rest is doing.
Not sure if these young wannabee adventurers would be allowed in the pub, Airin first checks with a few elder people if playing cards in a pub with a couple of tough looking adventurers is good for their education.

Inside, Airin first joins Selithe and sees what game she plans on playing. Then suddenly the singins kicks in.
Knowing how awfull she sang when they brought Lomar and Bobbles to Hovel, Airin starts in a rather play back fashion, but soon, the singings gets to her as well, and she does try to sing the chorus. (YIKES rolled a 2!!!)

OOOOPS... suddenly those standing close to her hear something that comes close to the squealing of a pig... Airin turns to a darker shade of red once more, swearing to everyone around here she will not sing anymore...

her face only turns more red as Kendry kisses her in public, not that she disliked that of course, but she just made a fool of herself and tried to stay in the background :-)

Song, and Slipping Away (Temp DM Cayzle)
Saturday January 7th, 2006 6:50:39 AM

Kendry's song is very well received by the poeple nearby, and the crowd that had been dispersing is quickly reconstituted ... and strengthed by the arrival of a dozen militia.

The crowd eagerly joins in the singing, and the militia members raise their voices loudly if inexpertly. The laughter is great as well.

Podo uses the energetic song as cover under which to have a private word with Zardock. He answers the young halfling. Podo, Please Highlight to display spoiler: {The hermit says, "We always welcome anyone who is interested in the path we walk. Truth to tell, most who walk a little ways with us then turn back after learning more. That is fine, of course. I would be pleased to walk with you, to tell you more, and who knows? Mayhap you will be interested in taking the Long Walk. Let us meet and talk when the festivities die down."}

The dwarf hermit claps strongly along with the music.

The burgomeister has a quiet word with Zardock, Podo, Selithe (who he recognizes) and any other of the adventurers in reach: "Good sir dwarf, I have another matter on which I would value your advice. And that of these fine young people. Would you please slip away with me to the Bell Tower? Young Kendry can join us after the song is done." The dwarf seems inclined to go with Calfast.

Airin joins in singing too, and if her performance is not excellent, at least her enthusiasm makes up for that. The crowd roars with delight at the kiss.

OOC: Who will go with Zardock and Calfast to the Bell Tower? Will anyone wait to bring Kendry there after the performance?

Kendry notes that Calfast, Tobias, the dwarf, and some of his companions are heading to the Bell Tower. He signals them to go on ahead - he'll catch up shortly.

"It's good to think about such things as our dwarf friend teaches, no? Well, to honor him, and you, the militia, and you my friends, the next barrel of ale is on me, Kendry Leafwin Pipewood!" He offers the hobbit who runs the sidewalk drinking spot a platinum piece (or up to two, if necessary, though one pp would be very generous for a barrel of regular ale).

He'll sing the starting and ending choruses one more time, then, as graciously as possible, depart in the direction his friends have gone, and taking, if they will, Airin and Selithe with him into the Bell Tower. Wait! "Dwight - Dwight - wake up!" He gently shakes the shoulder of his inscrutible friend. "C'mon, let's away."

Once inside, he is curious as to what Calfast might have to say.

The Root of the Problem (DM Cayzle)
Tuesday January 10th, 2006 6:02:55 AM

A custodian lets the main body of the party plus Calfast and Zardock into the Bell Tower.

Kendry's offer of free drinks is quite well received, but a couple curious people follow him to the Tower. The custodian lets him and Dwight in, and shoos the other people away angrily. "Be off! It's no business of yours!"

Inside, there is a strange sight to behold. Growing up through the foundations are thick vines, five to ten feet thick, and long! They wind up through the masonry, up, up, up! Into the very stone of the Tower.

"My friends," the burgomeister says, "you know that there have been many cases of plant growth far beyond normal lately. However, this case I have managed to keep quiet; I hope you will be able to keep it secret too. Look at these vines!"

If you look closely, you will note that the vines have pulled back a little, shrinking slowly, withering a little, leaving gaps in the stonework.

Zardock looks it over, tapping at the mortar, listening to the stonework. He says, "If these vines die, the tower will fall."

Calfast's face falls. "I thought as much! This is a disaster! I really do not want to let the people know about this. It would undermine their confidence and maybe start a panic. But even if I did let it be known, can we repair the damage in time? The plants are shrinking fast. Upstairs the vines are really withering back!"

"Maybe you, my friends, have some resources or ideas?"

Zardock looks thoughtful. "Hmmm ... Maybe ..."

Airin and Fioni
Tuesday January 10th, 2006 9:34:25 AM

"Hmmm, this is odd. Are there any signs of drought elsewhere? When exactly did this withering start? Could it be it was at the same moment that the Fey King was defeated?!?
Maybe the druids from the Culverwood can help us out here! Clover, from the Circle of the Culverwoods might be able do something about this... I'm afraid I have not mastered the spells to make plants grow back.

"I'd suggest to check with the Druids in the Culverwood."

Kendry proposes one approach, solicits others.  d20+8=22
Tuesday January 10th, 2006 1:28:32 PM

"That's a good idea, Airin," Kendry says to her idea of consulting with the Culverwood druids.

Another thought occurs to him. "Well, I have a potion called unguent of timelessness. When you apply it to something that is living, or once was living, it slows its rate of decay, so that it takes a year to evidence only one day's decay." He digs around in a pouch as he is talking. "Now, I have only one bottle of it, but if we could acquire more, we should be able to cover the vines, I should think." He extracts a flask. "A little goes a long way - this bottle is enough to cover perhaps forty to fifty feet of the vine. To be safe, let's get some more, enough to cover it all - then assign some workmen to work on shoring up and repairing our venerable bell tower in such a way that the vines will not pull it down. It would be a shame to lose 'er.

"But, let's think whether there might be some other approaches to this. Dwight, anything? Tobias, how 'bout you? Have any tricks up your sleeve?" He also looks to Podo and Selithe to get their perspectives.

[Bardic knowledge check of 22 to see if Kendry might be able to recall some other bit of herbal or architectural knowledge to aid in resolving the problem.]

He also turns back to Calfast. "Is this the only building in town suffering from this condition?"

[OOC: Unguent of Timelessness
When applied to any matter that was once alive this ointment allows that substance to resist the passage of time. Each year of actual time affects the substance as if only a day had passed. Tobias inspects the vines, looking for evidence of what is causing the whithering. Is it lack of water, food, light, or something else killing it? [Survival check: 17; Knowledge (nature): 15]

He will also seek a natural way of keeping the vines alive (if one exists).

Also, Tobias says, "I'm no expert here, but if there were a way to petrify the vines as they are. That would keep the tower from collapsing and the stoned vines would fill the holes that they've made. Then, you could fill in the empty spaces in the walls that already exist."

Dwight
Tuesday January 10th, 2006 7:06:08 PM

"I'd agree with Tobias, petrifying would pretty much take care of the problem permanently and no one else would have to worry about it."

"Is that a Druidic thing? Not quite sure about turning things to stone, but don't some priest return people from stone to flesh again. Perhaps someone from Alemi or Domi. Again I am guessin'."

Dwight takes a moment and walks around examining the plant. Cautiously touching it (Does it feel like a normal plant?), Dwight ponders the situation.

"It may help to keep things in perspective it we can get a time table on this plants growth and when you noticed its withering began."

Podo Danderfluff
Tuesday January 10th, 2006 8:57:23 PM

"Ya' got me cuz," shrugs Podo. "I'm not sure what I could do. Let me check my inventory." As Podo searches around in his gear, it becomes obvious that he doesn't have anything that would be of use here in this situation.

"I am sorry to say, Kendry, that I don't know what I can offer to help in this situation. Perhaps there is a specialist in this sort of arena," says Podo to Kendry.

"Zardock, do you know of anyone or anything that could help us out in this situation?" asks Podo of Zardock.

Selithe
Tuesday January 10th, 2006 11:09:14 PM

Selithe looks around and also moves around, looking to the vines and pondering things as she hums to herself more than anything now. She still has her staff which she gives a light tap here and there, "Stone shaping spells might help, some type meld spells also might work to help meld stone together to remake. Of course I bet you're looking at some powerful people to cast the spells you need and probably money also to pay for them." Selithe smiles sheepishly, "Sorry, guess leave it to a wizard to think magic is the best way to solve a problem."

Kendry, additional thoughts
Wednesday January 11th, 2006 5:15:43 AM

"Our aunt Nilli," Kendry mentions, looking to Selithe, "might have some good counsel on this, too - and perhaps a good solution. And our mother is a druid, although not as far along in that respect as is Nilli." Turning to the others, he explains, "She's a druid who lives at our family burrow in the Culverwood. That's where many of my siblings and I were born. Oh, and there's also Mungo Hardbottle and his library. Perhaps among his scrolls and tomes he might have something suggesting a solution. A few well-applied mending spells might stave off disaster for a few days until a more permanent solution can be found. Even a decent stone mason and crew."

Solutions Discussed (DM Cayzle)
Wednesday January 11th, 2006 7:56:52 AM

The party quickly has several good ideas for helping save the Bell Tower.

Airin suggests bringing in Druids from the Culverwood.

She is very insightful -- the growth of the vines fits the time that the Fey King was born, and their diminishment started when he was defeated, so far as you can tell.

Kendry thinks that unguent of timelessness might help delay the plants' withering. His bardic lore recalls the story of Yack and the Magic Sunflower -- a halfling tale of a boy who planted magic seeds that grew a sunflower so high that it reached a Cloud Giant's castle in the sky. He recalls that in the tale, it was leprechauns who sold the boy the seeds. Is this relevant? Hard to say.

Calfast tells him that there are a few other buildings and tunnels that have large plants growing through them, but none he knows of have collapsed yet.

Tobias's inspection of the vines leads him to wonder how they grew in this dimly lit tower at all? There is no soil, except deep under stone foundations. No water. Little light. Maybe watering the vines and giving them light somehow would help. Surely it was a supernatural agency that caused these vines to sprout ... maybe some effect of the Fey King's brief reign? But that's not to say that a little light and water would not hurt!

He also thinks of petrifying the vines, but how to do that is not clear.

Dwight touches the vines. They sem very tough and strong ... it would take a long time to chop through one. But aside from the strength and toughness of the vines, they seem natural, if wilted.

Selithe thinks that magic to repair the stone work would help. Kendry asks, what about getting some masons in here?

Calfast is against that, even if it might work ... too noisy, too hard to keep secret. That's the choice of last resort, he says.

Podo seeks specialized help. He asks Zardock's opinion.

Zardock agrees with Selithe. "I'm a simple dwarf, and I see these vines as intruders. I'd say, get rid of the vines, or let them die off, and get someone in here to fix the stone. Yup, a Fixer is who you need, unless you plant-lovers think you can get these vines to grow in the dark somehow."

"If you want to go the Fixer route, I know one who might lend a hand."

Calfast is greatly heartened. "These are fine ideas! Which should we pursue? More than one? Which ones? In what order?"

Tobias
Wednesday January 11th, 2006 11:41:47 AM

Tobias says, "It seems like the first course of action should be to keep the vines from withering further, while we fine some help (from a fixer or the druids). I think the most straightforward way would be to water them and somehow get them light. Perhaps a wizard with a Light or Daylight spell Selithe? Would that be easier to find than unguent or other magical means?"

Tobias ponders the vines some more and then thinks out loud, "Why was the plant growth in the Bell Tower so much greater than in other buildings in the area?"

Dwight
Wednesday January 11th, 2006 9:46:01 PM

Still looking and poking around, Dwight tries to think of what Pa taught him of trees. Mumbling mostly to himself he tries to recall how Pa hardened tree stumps to make benches out of that withstood many seasons without further decay.

"If time permits I could write a letter to my Pa," he finally offers. "He works with trees you see, trimming, removing, and of course using the wood gotten from the downed trees. Not a craftsmen, but he has made benches for the outdoors. If I had paid more attention, I would recall how he did it. I remember him mixing a thick paste and then spreading it on the dead trunk. The trunk would then last for years. If his paste would work on a vine and it could arrive soon enough, I am sure it would be cheaper than buying more ungent or hiring other means."

Selithe
Thursday January 12th, 2006 1:15:53 AM

Selithe looks to Tobias and thinks some to herself before answering, "The light spell produces light, sure enough, but I don't think it would produce the type of light plants need. A sun light spell would most likely work the best, however you're looking at a lot of work to keep these plants alive and maybe too much work depending on why they are even here. I think we should look into this Fixer and see about it."

Kendry
Thursday January 12th, 2006 2:37:50 AM

Kendry investigates the length and breadth of the spread of the vines, measuring linear feet, and taking a length of silk rope around the trunk and vines at various points, and from the numbers he tallies, he calculates how many flasks it would take to carry out his first suggestion, preferring to err on the generous side of total coverage required.

He announces, "Well, it would take [x - DM fill this in, please!] more flasks, at 150 gp each to cover the whole plant in the unguent of timelessness. Calfast, sir, - is there enough in the coffers to cover that? I'm happy to donate mine to the cause, and pay for one of the extras we'll need."

Regarding Zardock's suggestion, he asks, "Well, is there a fixer in town? Or nearby? They deal in Woldsblood, do they not? Dangerous stuff. Dwight - you know anything about that sort of thing? And, say, isn't your pa in just the next town over? Humble's Ford?"

Three Strategies (DM Cayzle)
Thursday January 12th, 2006 7:48:15 AM

Kendry figures it would take maybe five to 10 vials of the stuff, depending on how far up the vines go, and if he tried to get some of the magic oil into the roots as well.

Calfast summarizes: We have three possible answers:

(1) Kill the vines but leave them in place as structural supports, strengthened and preserved as Kendry and Dwight suggest.

(2) Nurture and grow the vines, so that they remain a healthy integral part of the tower.

(3) Get rid of the vines and then get a Fixer to repair the damage.

Zardock adds, "I met the guy I'm thinking of about a week ago -- he was working on one of the Giant Defense Towers north of here."

Calfast adds, "I don't want to spend more than 2,000 gold."

The burgomeister asks for final comments before the debate is ended.

Airin and Fioni
Thursday January 12th, 2006 8:19:02 AM

Airin listens to all proposals and agrees that keeping the vines from withering should provide to be good enough for the time being. But a long term solution has to be found as soon as possible.

"How long will it take to apply the potion to the vines love?" she asks Kendry. "Maybe in the meantime we could try to contact some of the elder druids either around Angel Springs or back in the Culverwood. I guess me and maybe one extra person should be able to ride back the Culverwood and the ancient Druid Circle and contact Clover, while the rest of you and a few extra hands cover the vines, don't you think?"

If the group agrees that riding back to the (treacherous) forest (where we could use the Forest Walking feat Airin does not have) she and her companion, will ride straight towards the Culverwood and the ancient druid circle. Airin should be able to find her way back quite easily, and she can always ask Aunt Marigold to escort her to the Whistler Oak. Blossom, Airin's pony, is probably around here somewhere, as she was teleported with that ancient tome as well.

Podo Danderfluff
Thursday January 12th, 2006 8:51:22 AM

"I think we should follow Zardock's suggestion about using a Fixer to resolve the problem. After to ascertain this Fixer's help, we can let him in on our potion of timelessness at that time," says Podo to the group.

Tobias
Thursday January 12th, 2006 12:41:35 PM

Tobias talks to Selithe, "Ok, that seems reasonable. If you think keeping them alive naturally is a lot of work, then we should go with the oil."

To the rest of the group, "Seems to me we'll want to use the oil then to keep the tower from getting any more unstable. Even with the fixer, it will probably take some time to get the repairs done."

As Tobias listens to Airin's plan for the Culverwood, he gladly volunteers to be her guide. "The Culverwood is my home, and I would be happy to return to it (even if only for a short time). I can take you to the druid circle. And, you don't have to worry about getting lost with the guide named Pathfinder..." And, he gives her a smile.

[OOC: Tobias does have ForestWalking.]

Dwight
Thursday January 12th, 2006 6:19:46 PM

Content with the conversation steering towards the fixer and not his pa, Dwight makes a sigh of relief. Others can tell, while the offer was genuine, it was not his preferred choice.

"Can the fixer take care of the vine 'quietly'?

Kendry
Friday January 13th, 2006 3:36:02 AM

"Let's say it takes ten flasks, carefully applied," Kendry says. "That's another 1,350 gold pieces.

"However, the unguent does not halt decay. It slows it. So, rather than the building collapsing in, perhaps, a few weeks or months, it will do so in a few years or decades. It's not a bad fix, but only temporary.

"An old proverb says, 'In the abundance of counselors there is wisdom.' On the other hand, 'Too many cooks spoil the broth.'

"So much for proverbs," the bard says dismissively, wondering why he even brought them up. "If the goal is to undo the harm of Eberyon's influence, and to refortify our beloved bell tower - not to mention satisfying a bit of curiosity I have about their practices - I'm inclined to request the aid of this fixer you mentioned.

"Now, dear Airin, it's quite likely that our Culverwood druid friends are also capable of coming to the rescue. But with so many who were with our group being scattered to the winds - truth to tell, I'm not excited about you and Tobias scooting off yourselves to go fetch our friends. If that's the route we're going to take, then let's do it together, as a group.

"Now, if this fixer is able to repair the Giant Towers that help protect our valley, surely he - it's a he, right? - has the wherewithal to deal with this edifice.

"So, in short, I'm open to any of the ideas put forward, but am personally most inclined to agree with Podo. Let's have the follower of Alemi, who is skilled in the power of Woldsblood, repair, restore, and refortify our building. Besides, it would give us an excuse to visit the Giant Towers, eh?"

As an afterthought, Kendry turns to Calfast. "Should circumstances arise that cause unexpected delay, it would not require our presence to go the direction I first suggested."

Airin and Fioni
Friday January 13th, 2006 5:57:55 AM

"You could be right Kendry. Maybe there is a way to send an animal messenger to find the Druids from the Culverwood so they can come to Angel Springs and inspect the problem with these vines."

"Let keep a visit to the Culverwood in the back of our mind Tobias, if things go wrong and we fail to contact them by other means we can ride fast to find them and bring them here. OK?"

"I don't think I would let a chance to see the Giant Towers go by! Now... you do know they once were made to stop the Giants from the northern hills from invading our peaceful valley right?!?"

Well, guess there's no speedy visit to the Culverwood this time.

A Decision is Almost Made (Temp DM Cayzle)
Friday January 13th, 2006 6:49:36 AM

A consensus seems to be forming around Zardock's Fixer solution. A trip to the Culverwood, would be farther than a trip to the nearest Giant Tower. To get to the Culverwood would require a transit of the entire length of Crescent Valley and then beyond. But are there no druids closer than the Culverwood?

Zardock says that the Fixer -- his name is Alekzander Toomane -- is indeed a he.

So is the party determined? Will it be Alekzander?

[OOC: To be honest, my friends, the thought of nurturing the vines and sustaining them to continue to prop up the Tower had not occurred to me when I wrote the module. The Fixer is the default solution to this problem. But a druidic solution is a nifty idea. Please feel free to pick either one, as you see fit. Do not think that the Fixer is the best solution just because the DM's NPC suggested it! Frankly, I like to reward creativity and good thinking.]

Whatever the group decision, what is your plan? When will you set out? Will you need any supplies or preparation?

Airin and Fioni  d20+9=28
Friday January 13th, 2006 9:35:15 AM

"Well then shall we go out to find this Alekzander?", Airin asks her friends. It seems she's rather anxious to get some action again.

Having a second look at the vines (knowledge nature 28) Airin tries to determine how long the vines would last. If she finds they will wither quickly Airin says: "I do suggest someone should nurture the vines in our absense. We don't know how long we will be gone, and we don't want the tower to collapse while we're out to find some help. Maybe some local druids can help with this job?"

Airin checks her food and drink supplies in her backpack and notices she urgently needs to refill these. She has enough other thingies to enjoy a little trip up north towards the Giant Towers

Tobias
Friday January 13th, 2006 11:40:22 AM

"Lady, I am at your disposal to travel to Culverwood whenever you need it." Tobias says to Airin with a hint of regret in his voice.

"Let's go to the Giant Tower and find the fixer. And, someone will have to keep the vines alive long enough for our return."

Tobias will need to gather some rations and water for the trip, but otherwise, he is ready to go.

Podo Danderfluff
Friday January 13th, 2006 8:38:53 PM

Podo says, "Whatever you folks decided to do is fine with me, but I need to add that I think visiting the Giant towers would be nice. It might come in handy one day to see what they are all about incase the G'kin come knocking!"

Off to a Giant Tower (DM Cayzle)
Saturday January 14th, 2006 12:30:52 PM

Airin looks at the vines and realizes that she needs more information. She climbs the stairs. Inside the Tower the light is very dim, basically threading in through four arrow slits half-way up the tower walls. There are landings at each of the arrowslits where an archer could stand. Being, of course, halfling-proportioned, the arrow slits are pretty small; nonetheless, it is clear that the vines have tried to grow out through them into the sun. Airin sees that the vines have been crudely hacked at here so as to prevent the tendils from leaving the tower.

Even higher up, there is a closed trap door going up. The tendrils stop here. Opening the door, Airin steps put to the roof chamber, where the bell is. A rope snakes down through a small hole in the floor. There are four pillars at each corner of the square tower, supporting a tile roof. The view is amazing -- you can see the entire town! And miles into the countryside.

Zardock joins the druid on the roof. On the way back down, he looks at the damage the vines have caused the structure, and the extent to which they now support it.

Coming down, Airin and Zardock have a couple thoughts and suggestions. If the vines are watered well (they are very dry), and if the trap door is kept open in the day, maybe the vines will last another week before there is any significant danger.

Calfast says that he can make sure of that, at least.

The group agrees to go gather any possessions and supplies needed and to meet Zardock on the Old Traders Road headed north out of town in an hour or two.

Tobias
Sunday January 15th, 2006 6:53:35 PM

"That sounds like a good idea. We need them to stay alive long enough for us to make it to the tower and return."

After Tobias gathers some rations and water, he's ready to head for the Old Traders Road.

Kendry
Sunday January 15th, 2006 10:52:26 PM

Agenda
Kendry tells his friends, "All right. I'm going to have a quick word with our good Burgomeister, then it's off to the smithy, with a stop by my family's music and toy shop, and popping in to a store or two. Who would like to pick up some good food for our little journey? I have cooking pots, utensils, cups, and a few other things - no where near as extensive a collection as our good friend Olo carted around with him. Anyway, I'll see you all in an hour and a half, or thereabouts. Anyone who wants to come with me on my rounds, feel free."

Talking with Calfast
Kendry takes a scroll case out of his haversack, and hands it to Calfast. "When you can find time, sir, you'll find a fairly complete report of our comings and goings to date in this." It is a copy of the journal Kendry has been keeping since first they got together at the start of the elections, including the Eberyon story, and their trip to Lawni's Lens, including sketches of some of the folks they've met, and maps of where they've been.

"Sir, I really was hoping when we came here to be able to receive more training from the WLA. By the way - I'd be interested in seeing what it might take to gain title to Lawni's Lens. There are ghosts and gargoyles and unseen servants there, at least. But no clear evidence of a landlord. It's a wondrous place, though, Calfast, and deserving of more exploration. Maybe the WLA might use it as a training center here in the valley - or perhaps you'd prefer they be stationed here in Angel Springs."

The Rounds
He checks in with the blacksmith, picking up his two ponies, and checks to verify that the shoes were changed, and the pack saddles and tack have been looked over and brought up to snuff - not that they've seen a great deal of wear and tear as of yet. If he owes any more than the four gold pieces he paid yesterday, he'll settle that account.

He lets his Nalfein and Leska know that they'll be heading out of town for a bit. He tells them, briefly, about Lomar the ogre/ogre mage, and asks them to see about having a masterwork drum made for him. He gives them the dimensions. He thanks them for welcoming his friends so.

Finally he stops by a few stores, and picks up some good spices, flour, salt and fresh tea, and visits the Catacombs outlet here in town.

When he finishes up, he loads his ponies, climbs up on Chean, and joins his friends at the edge of town, ready to travel northward.

Airin and Fioni
Monday January 16th, 2006 3:29:58 AM

"My my! Even by careful watering and making sure these vines have plenty of sun we might stall their withering." Briefly Airin instructs how to take good care of the vines for now.

Thrilled by the thought of a new journey, Airin starts to prepare Blossom for the ride and collects some supplies (simply rations and stuff - no real things to visit the CC for).

Then the time has come to ride with her friends once again. A great bunch they are and Airin's glad she can ride with them.

Taking sides next to Chean and Kendry, Blossom trots North to find the Giant Towers. Fioni feels the excitement as well and cheerfully shrieks high above their heads as she turns North as well...

to find new adventures...

Tobias
Monday January 16th, 2006 2:24:18 PM

Tobias says to Kendry,"That sounds like fine cooking equipment. Perhaps we'll have some time to hunt on this trip, and you can put all of that equipment to good use."

Then, Tobias collects his few belongings, buys a pony, and gathers with the party eager to leave the bustling city behind and head for the quieter countryside.

Podo Danderfluff Pipewood
Monday January 16th, 2006 8:09:57 PM

"Say, how much time do we have before we need to leave? I need a few items for the general store first."

If the answer is 15 or so minutes, Podo will ask for directions to the nearest store andthen head off for a small necessarity trip to restock. If not, Podo says, "I'm ready!"

Selithe
Tuesday January 17th, 2006 12:56:06 AM

Selithe prepares to leave with the others, happy to going to be moving again and moving with a spring in her step for sure as she moves to check on her riding dog. She hadn't done much with her of late and really should spend more time with her also.

Selithe does wait for Kendry when she does this also and smiles to pick on Kendry, "Hmm, so which of these dogs was mine again?" Knowing Kendry will tell her the right one she can't resist picking on him abit, "mmm, I think the on your say is yours is really mine." Selithe grins and gives her brother a nudge before continuing, "sorry bro, couldn't resist."

One she get her dog ready and everything is ready to move out since she packs all her supplies with her where she goes.

Kendry
Tuesday January 17th, 2006 1:52:04 AM

Kendry smiles at Airin, and takes her hand for a moment, when Selithe speaks to him. He listens, and smiles.

"Gra is yours, sis. She's the girl. Cheann is mine. He's the boy. You eat too many of Leska's biscuits for breakfast this morning?" he answers, and asks his sister, teasing right back.
