Toros Tuesday December 20th, 2005 2:38:34 PM
OOC: Sorry, have got sick and have not been able to do anything except laying down for some time.
When Toros gets up he realizes it is already late after a loong, not very smooth yet, resting sleep, and looks for the others to see how the preparations are going.
Syr Tuesday December 20th, 2005 7:41:48 PM
Syr wakes up and joins the other students for some stretching. After an hour or so, he stops, panting, "Geez, you guys do this EVERY day? Not my cup of tea."
Selecting a Leader (DM JohnP) Tuesday December 20th, 2005 10:50:04 PM
After an afternoon of resting, meditation and memorization of spells everyone is getting ready to defend Oshirr House.
Xenia relates some of her observations from the northern wall. Actually, she makes a quick sketch of the entire compound. Sketch of Compound
"Ahhh, the north wall is about 200' or so wide and about 20' feet high. It's a fairly good stone wall, so not all that easy for someone to climb. The field in front has been cleared back at least 500' from the wall."
After relating this, there is a knock on the door of the room used by the party. "Excuse me, it is time to prepare. May I enter?" and the voice sounds very much like Alemi.
Assuming that the party permits it, Alemi enters. "We're about to have a planning meeting over the table. If you haven't done so, please select a leader to attending the meeting. And I will present that person to the students that you will be commanding."
OOC - Sanity Info
As mentioned above: - north wall is about 200' wide. - wall is 20' high and made of fitted stone - DC 25 Climb check for the wall
Everyone has had 8 hours rest (enough for hitpoints = level)
Garrett - if you had memorized Raise Dead for Uriel, use it when he decides to come back to the Tap game. So choose another spell if it was for that reason.
Garrett Wednesday December 21st, 2005 9:07:14 AM
Garrett looks at the rest of the group as Alemi asks for a leader to be chosen. If no one immediately jumps forward and says that they would like to do it, Garrett will volunteer.
"I have led small groups in combat before, and would be honored to lead you if no one else feels that they are better suited to it. The downside to me being leader is that I am generally in the middle of the battle, and cannot always see what is happening elsewhere. Perhaps A spellcaster or someone who will not be heavily involved in direct melee combat would be more suitable for this particular battle."
"I would be more than happy to lend my thoughts and insight, should they be welcome. And, on that note, my thought just turned to area of effect spells, specifically ones that damage or slow down large areas of attackers. Spells like that could be most useful."
"I am also preparing a spell that should work well in this situation, But I must ask you Alemi, what kinds of creatures can we expect to be attacking? How many? and what time do they usually attack?
Xenia Wednesday December 21st, 2005 9:39:41 AM
"Not me," Xenia chimes in from her place curled in the corner. She runs a finger over the light scarring on her arm, all that remains of the battle in the Inner Sanctum. "I'm a scout and Quiet-girl. I say anything in a dust-up and I give myself away."
"I'd trust Garrett," she says, but then turns to the armored cleric. "But that means, like you said, you can't get in the middle of things unless you think it's, like, really necessary."
"By the way, I set up a little trap just outside the wall yesterday. I placed some flasks of oil just down below. I figure this last bead off the necklace should set things burning pretty good. Might not hurt 'em much. But it might give us some time and breathing space if they look to coming over the wall."
Question: What were the items identified as?
Also, given the length of the wall, can I change the placement of those Flasks of Oil to 4 foot intervals straight across the bottom of the wall? That would make a 40 foot long strip across the midpoint of the wall. If things go as planned, it would be five feet out.
Appolo Wednesday December 21st, 2005 10:27:18 AM
Appolo wakes and smiles at Alemi and the others"OK I'll command our little froup in battle, but I'm making Garret my second in command.Secomdly you said we would have students under our command as well. That is good.I'll use our group asa mobile reserve plug any holes, might just create a few to draw the enemy in and then cut them to pieces. As Garret said just what kind of creatures and how many are we expecting.Garret if you don't mind I'd like you to attend the meeting with me.Xenia you take Toros and scout the area out side the north wall and see if you two can arrange some more traps and funnel the eney into a tight and very small area.Make out spells more effective that way and nullify they're advantage in numbers.Oni Syr go get set up on the find a suitable Command Post.Something with a good view of the entire wall."
Xenia Wednesday December 21st, 2005 3:36:09 PM
"I dunno, 'Ppolo," the rogue says from her corner. "I've already looked at the north wall. And, the area outside the north wall is a huge clear space over 200 feet wide and possibly as much as 1000 feet out. Trapping any of that is gonna take days of work. Digging, laying spikes, and such. I don't think we got the time."
"If we got illusions, that may be your best way to put the merciless guys into your funnel. But ... 'side from that, I don't think we're gonna do it."
She raises an eyebrow at the pirates orders.
"Have you even looked at the map?" she asks.
Garrett Wednesday December 21st, 2005 4:44:28 PM
"I will come to the meeting, there are many questions I have. Sounds like you are the leader Appolo, and I will gladly be your second."
Oni Borzzone Wednesday December 21st, 2005 5:18:16 PM
Oni listens to the talk, and smiles gently. He walks around and nods in agreement, or dissent when talked to. He had not lived this long by making rashd3ecisions. Looking at eh one called Alemi, Oni focuses on the man himself. If he remembered his studies correctly, this man was to become a god. Phaw! Gods, religion, all that made for man to feel like he had purpose in life. And yet the Alemi figure was very imposing. When time permits in the future he will need to do more studying on the subject. For now, it seems they get to fight again.
Syr Wednesday December 21st, 2005 7:13:13 PM
The elf grins at Xenia's mention that she is a 'quiet girl' thinking just the opposite. He nods as Appolo assumes leadership and walks out with Oni looking for the high ground most likely on top of the building but best to check again just in case.
At the Wartable (DM JohnP) Wednesday December 21st, 2005 10:32:57 PM
Alemi nods when Appolo steps forward to represent the party. "Initiative is good in times like these."
After making assignments, Appolo and Garrett go to the wartable in the main room of the cottage where Alemi will make his presentation. Domi and some other teachers make room for the two.
Alemi clears his throat and begins to speak. As he does so, he points to the model of Oshirr House that has been constructed on the table.
"I expect attacks to all four of the walls that surround their compound. Probably this will be by monster type. This should allow you begin making specific monster battle type strategies as you'll face only one type of monster. There may be a second wave beyond possibly hidden by illusion, so do not commit your forces into a plan of action until you actually encounter the second group, if there is one. They may appear to be orcs and instead become swarming kobolds."
"I and several of the other teachers will defend the East and South walls. The Students led by Professor Domi will man the west wall." And Alemi points to the various walls of the compound on the table.
"When they can spare it, the town of Winter will send reinforcements after their attacks are repelled. So may the elves to the east. If reinforcements come, they will be assigned to the wall that needs them most if they can break through the attacking lines. If not, then they will try to pull as many off the rear of the attacking foes as they can on the side of my choosing. We communicate with semaphore flags like on ships with them." Looking at Appolo, he continues, "I expect that you will be familiar with that."
Alemi now points to several points on the north wall of the model. "You have a supply of over 2000 arrows in quivers up on the ramparts. You shouldn't even come close to running out."
"There are dozens of extra swords, etc. in case they are needed."
"Pole arms are there to push off ladders. Behind the wall are catapults which I will assign students to man as long as they are useful and rocks remain. They are not crack shots with it so please issue the order for them to go to their stations if there is nothing to hit in their range which is 100' to 500'. You have 5 of them, and they will also serve on the wall if needed."
"So 5 of you, 5 on catapults, and possible reinforcements later that you cannot depend on. Yes, we're facing dire times, yet with the heart of the hero, we shall remain standing throughout the night."
"Professor Domi will describe our adversaries."
Domi now looks to everyone at the table. He unrolls a scroll and carefully places it over the model on the table.
"Now, please listen carefully. All of the attackers are monsters that have been altered by the magic that Gargalus has discovered. Some of the alterations are greater than others, but one thing is common to all - the creatures are smarter and more devious than before."
"The orcs are probably the closest to original - the magic wielded by Gargalus has simply made them tougher. And given them horns, too."
"The kobolds have been granted wings, although they can't really fly. Glide is more like it, so they will still need ladders or like to get over the wall. Once they are on top, however, they can easily disperse inside the compound. They've been seen to flap their wings to increase their running speed, too."
"The goblins are somewhat of a mystery. They seem to have been granted some magical abilities commonly seen in faerie creatures."
"As Alemi said, expect two waves of attacks. Each wave may have upwards of 30 attackers. Plan your tactics carefully since the second wave will be able to observe anything you do against the first."
========================================
Meanwhile, Oni and Syr go out to the north wall to identify a good command post. Once there, they determine that the central tower on the wall is probably the best spot. It's only 10' higher than the wall, the same as the corner towers but has the advantage of position. The peak of the barracks just inside the wall is the just lower than the tower.
Standing up there, the two cannot see the oil flasks that Xenia had buried just 5' out from the wall.
========================================
After the conference, Appolo and Garrett go back to the party. They convey everything that was described by Alemi, and everyone has a chance to discuss it.
Overall, there is only perhaps two or three hours until the expected midnight attack. Time enough to get familiar with the wall and the field of battle, but probably not enough to prepare a lot of defenses.
Shortly there is a tap on the door and two students stagger in with the bundle of gear collected from the Red Cloaks.
"Where shall we put this, sirs ... and madam?"
When anyone examines the bundle, they find that the items are labelled with tags.
3 sets of twisted plate armor - Demon Armor 4 sets of breastplate armor - +3 breastplate 7 red cloaks - +2 Cloak of Resistance 4 heavy maces - +2 Heavy Mace 3 bastard swords - +2 Unholy Bastard Sword 7 rings - +2 Ring of Protection 4 bucklers - +1 Buckler 4 necklaces - +4 Periapt of Wisdom Wand - Wand of Cure Moderate Wounds, 32 charges Wand - Wand of Cure Moderate Wounds, 38 charges
OOC - Feel free to plan, etc.. I will create a map and post it tomorrow night.
ed. JohnP - because I didn't like how the identifications turned out using <spoiler> tags
Garrett Thursday December 22nd, 2005 9:10:52 AM
"Well, where to begin." says Garrett looking at magic items, the castle map, and thinking about strategy.
Garrett offers the following to Appolo. "We should each take what would be helpful from the pile of items, and offer the rest to be used by Alemi's forces. The only thing of use to me in thatgroup would be a wand of CMW."
"I think everyone should give you a general account of what they have for use."
"As for the battle plan, it is up to you Appolo. I memorized a spell called "symbol of sleep" which will pretty much put to sleep any bad guy that gets within 10' of it. That should hopefully secure a 20' section of wall provided they do not have a spell caster to dispel it. They may just avoid that section of wall once they see what is happening. It only lasts for about an hour and a half, so I will need to inscribe it upon the bottom of the wall, in the area you want it on, shortly before midnight."
"I also memorized a flame strike to drop upon advancing troops, as well as a wind wall should they try and use a barrage of missile fire. The wind wall will stop arrow fire from both sides, but probaly not affect the catapult. I could put it out 100' from the castle, preventing them from shooting at us until they get close, but still allowing us to use our catapults. Whether I use them on wave 1 or 2 is up to you. I also am capable of turning outsiders and fey should that come into play." Garrett then rattles off the rest of the spells he has prayed for for tonight, and gives a brief description of what they do(see spell list)
"I also have 2 fly potions, possibly to view the battle better, or get a sneak peek at wave 2. A potion of haste, displacement, keen edge, and bulls strength. I also have silversheen."
"There is much to decide upon Appolo. I think The students should stay manned on the catapults and firing until the walls swarm and then take positions to repel the ladders. The students should be able to hit most anywhere in the cleared area. Any ladders that can be destroyed before they get here would be helpful."
Garrett sits back to hear what the others have prepared and have available, and their thoughts on possible battle tactics and uses. he is trying to make note of everything so that when Appolo is ready to make the formal defense plan, Garrett will be ready with good ideas.
Xenia Thursday December 22nd, 2005 3:43:51 PM
"I could use one of these rings." The dark girl picks out one of the seven rings. She replaces the one already on her finger. "Might as well take one of these necklaces too. 'Specially since this Fireball thing is near spent." From the pile Xenia plucks a Periapt of Wisdom.
He holds up her hand, assessing the way the new ring looks on her hand. It's a serious business.
"I tell you, Garrett. I'm not much one for sewing mass destruction. In a mix like this, I think I'd like to range through the enemy and pick, you know, like, strategic targets. Spell casters and such. Jump in, hit, jump back and disappear. I also disarm pretty good with this Chain I got."
"But, if you're gonna be droppin' stuff out there, probs best I stay on the wall and just fire arrows. Leastwise for the start of the battle."
"I got a couple of potions for Flying. A couple for Climbing like a Spider. Some for Shield. A couple of different types to give you speed. That's for moving in and out of the ranks of baddies."
"So, you know, don't be surprised if I jump out over the wall at sometime, eh."
Appolo Thursday December 22nd, 2005 4:56:40 PM
Appolo looks around"OK here's what we're going to do.First let's get to the tower and have a look see. Then we give the students the bucklers, rings and weapons from the previous battle with the red cloaks as.Garret you will command the wall.Oni you will be with me.Do you have a familiar. If so I want it to scout those woods find the enemy.Xenia and Toros stay invisible until the last second. We'll use flaming arrows to set the flasks on fire.We also need dry hay.I wnat to cover as much of the ground infront of the wall with dry flamable hay.Xenia save your fireball. We will hold our magic or most of it until the enemies spellcasters show themselves or the seconf wave arrives. We also need to find out if the catpults can fire flaming ammunition. The catapults abord my ship can.So let's get cracking.I think Toros suddenly appearing should cause some panick in the enemy ranks apparently Taurs are rather scarce in these parts.Once we get to the Cp we'll work out more of the plan.Let's go."With that said Appolo heads for his command toser as indicated by Syr.
Oni Borzzone 47HP 19AC (Mage Armor 9 hours) Thursday December 22nd, 2005 8:57:17 PM
Oni listens to the plan for the night ahead. When Appollo asks about a familiar, he tells them all, "The staff I have will turn into a large snake upon command, that is the closest to a familiar that I have.'
"It is a good plan, and it should do nicely." Then Oni moves over to the cloaks and takes one for himself. "These wands of curing wounds should go to where the battle will be heaviest. Oh, and I can cast a magic armor on 6 of you, that will last through the battle. So those who wish the protection come to me."
Battle Planning (DM JohnP) Thursday December 22nd, 2005 11:44:30 PM
Everyone gets out to survey the field. It's seems peaceful ... too peaceful.
MAP - please note that the scale on map is 20' x 20' squares - use this map for targetting catapults and long range offensive spells - once the enemy gets within range of spells, etc., there will be a 5'x5' scale map (once I figure out how to make it readable).
OOC - It's taking me longer to get ready for this battle than I thought. Take the time this holiday weekend to plan, prepare, etc..
Anyone who chooses to use equipment from Red Cloaks, please update your character sheets.
Next post will have system for firing, etc. catapults.
Toros(Ceil Sub) Friday December 23rd, 2005 6:42:45 AM
Toros will chose a red cape as he tell the others "Sounds Good to me!".
OOC to DM John I donot have a copy of his CS. I know your busy, If you havd a minute would you please send me a copy to momlap@sbcglobal.net. If you don't I'll wing it.
Syr Friday December 23rd, 2005 3:25:06 PM
Syr gets a few choice items from the loot and prepares for battle. He follows Oni hoping that magic aided defenses will help more than last time.
(OOC: invalid link, the domain name expired)
Garrett Saturday December 24th, 2005 10:40:26 AM
Garrett proceeds out to the wall to get a better look at the battleground.
Replying to Xenia. "Yes, you are great at hitting hard and disappearing, but I wonder if we will need you on the wall more. If there are lots of them, then the wall is really our only defensible location that we need to hold. Can you hit and move while on the wall? If they make it up the wall, we will need to keep them from getting over our side of it. Perhaps using us as flanking help."
Half an hour before the time they will thought to be attacking, Garrett will drop to the ground on the right side of the wall, about 15' from the end of the wall, and inscribe "Symbol of Sleep" on the wall about 4 feet off the ground. It will be set to activate whenever anyone evil looks at it. There is no limit to the number of creatures or HD that it effects. Once activated by the first evil being looking at it, it remains active for 90 minutes. (will save of 19 negates).
Garrett will suggest to Appolo "That we could use invisibilty and a potion of flying upon one person before the battle, and let them fly out for a quick scouting report of the kind, location, and number of enemy troops. for that matter, if it were myself or Oni, we could try and get to their staging area and throw a preemptive fireball or flamestrike at a heavy concentration of troops, or some of their war supplies."
Garrett will then have the 5 catapults spaced out equidistantly along the wall, and is planning on having each of the 5 students man one. That only leaves myself, Xenia, Syr and toros defend the 120' long wall if Appolo and Oni are up above. Not very good odds with the amount of space to cover.
Xenia Sunday December 25th, 2005 8:55:01 PM
Xenia smiles.
"Garret, with this chain, I can cover about 20 feet of wall. If they're using their hands and feet to climb, they can't weave and dodge. That means, I can hit 'em in the places they hurt most. And, if they gimme the opportunity, I can hit as many as five of 'em before they know they're hit."
"Meantime, I can wield a bow pretty good."
"And I got a few alchemist fire's 'Ppolo. To set of that oil."
"Speaking of which, I set that all up dead center of the wall. Where you think we should position ourselves?"
Oni Borzzone Monday December 26th, 2005 12:02:36 AM
"Ahh yes, rememeber our friend the blue devil, from the chamber, I am sure he will come to fight again. He also has a brother, I will try and persuade him to battle as well. One other thing, this staff i have can also change into a large snake, so no panicking."
Preparations (DM JohnP) Monday December 26th, 2005 11:21:06 PM
The party goes out to the north wall and begin making preparations once they see how it is laid out.
When they approach the wall, they are met by five men and women wearing the clothes of students here at Oshirr House. One steps forward, cap in hand.
"Excuse me, sirs ... and madam. We're here to man the siege engines and provide what help we can. Ahhh ... we haven't practiced much with the engines, so we're a bit slow. Maybe about a minute or so to prepare for a full range shot, then time to load. If we're shooting at a different spot, we need time to adjust also."
"We're not too practised, but we can help hold the wall when the opponent gets close, too."
The wall and walkway / platform are 20 above the ground. The crenellations provide cover to anyone behind them.
The towers are 30' high. There are doorways into the towers from the walkways and trapdoors and ladders up to the catapult platforms.
Catapults are slow - 10 rounds to wind back for a full range shot, somewhat less for shorter shots. 2 rounds to load, 2 rounds to aim, 1 round to fire. An assistant will speed things up - essentially cutting times in half. Ammunition is prepared sacks of rocks which will be treated like splash weapons. No other ammunition is available.
I will treat anyone who chooses to leave the wall on a separate map. Unless you have communication magics, the scout(s) will have their posts in spoilers.
Take some time to get set up, scout or whatever you like.
Xenia Tuesday December 27th, 2005 11:02:28 AM
The dark rogue estimates the distance in her mind. Wall to woods is about 400 feet. Running full out could get a body across the field in ... about 15 or 20 seconds. Running full out would leave 'em pretty exposed. If they took it more cautiously, they could do the field in just over half a minute.
"We won't get but one or two shots," Xenia says, her mind focused on the task at hand. "We could pre-aim the catapults to shave some time off of the reloading. We can get off one shot when they're at far range. That one we can only hope for the best. We'll need to all pitch in to help the guys at the catapults, but I think we can get in a shot when they're in really close. Maybe 60 feet from the wall. That one should be a killer, cause we could cover the whole front of the wall with that."
Questions 1) What's the full range on the Catapults? 400 feet? 2) How large an area does the shot scatter to? Do they fill the 20 foot squares on the big map?
Translations for Sanity's Sake 400 feet from the Woods to the Wall.
Assuming the enemy travel at 30 ft/round.
- Running (They lose Dex to AC) They make it aross the field in 3 rounds. - Double Move (They make it across the field in 6 rounds.
If we help each Student at a catapult, that gives us maybe two shots.
Suggestion Pre-aim on the big map to the following Squares on the Big Map.
J14, M14, P14, S14, V14.
First Volly when they hit Row 13 on the Big Map.
If we can reload and fire in 5 rounds, we can catch them at about Row 28 or 29. At that point, aiming would be a moot point as all our shot should be concentrated together.
1) The assumption is that they will be moving at 60 feet per round. 2) Another assumption is that we will be able to shave around off of the Crank and Load time by making that second shot to a spot only 60 feet away.
Syr Tuesday December 27th, 2005 5:20:04 PM
The elf approaches Appolo and timidly offers, "Not sure what you were thinking but with my speed... just dangle a rope over the wall and I should be able to get here well before the enemy. Not to mention that I'm a bit quiet when need be?"
Appolo Tuesday December 27th, 2005 6:45:45 PM
Appolo listens to the students and Xenia"Right we'll follow Xenia's plan as I was thinking along the same lines.Basic long distance shot then one shot at point blank range.ONi and I will man this catapult in this tower as it is the CP.Everyone else take a catapult and help the students.Except for Syr.Some one have something to make Syr invisible so he can scout for us and get some rope 25 ft should do it.Syr I want you back as soon as possibleMy money says the enemy has scouts out there as well watching us.During the battle I want the catapult in th towers to remain manned.so the students will hold that tower and man the catapult.Remeber we don't want to expose our magic or how much we have until absolutely neccessarry. That gives us 5 students in the tower with bows and catapult 5 of us in the center,Onis myself and any friends he can conjure in this tower witha catapultXenia remember to light the oil when the first wave reaches the wall.Garret we will need wind wall to defelect thier missles if any.But the heavy battle magics need to be saved for the second wave and thier spell casters."
Garrett d20-1=18 Tuesday December 27th, 2005 9:07:38 PM
"I can drop a wind wall as soon as their first arrow flies, but it only lasts for about a little less than a minute. I'll put it 40' away from the wall and run it parallel. We won't be able to shoot through it either, but it shouldn't affect the catapult shots."
Half an hour before the time they will thought to be attacking, Garrett will slide down the rope hanging from the wall to the ground. On the right side of the wall, about 15' from the end of the wall, Garrett will scribe "Symbol of Sleep" on the wall about 4 feet off the ground. It will be set to activate whenever anyone evil looks at it. There is no limit to the number of creatures or HD that it effects. Once activated by the first evil being looking at it, it remains active for 90 minutes. (will save of 19 negates). This will take 10 minutes to scribe. Garrett will then climb back up the rope(climb check of 18) and get ready for battle.
Scouting & Catapult Practice (DM JohnP) Tuesday December 27th, 2005 10:39:18 PM
The students hem and haw a little when Appolo announces his plan. The spokesman speaks up again.
"So, one of you will be helping us with the catapults. And you two will shoot the central one. Well, we could probably shoot faster that way. About manning the catapults and tower, that would be better than being on the wall. But which of the two corner towers did you want us in?"
Looking over to Xenia, the spokestudent continues. "Ahh, the treeline is about 500' out and that's how far we can shoot with the catapults. But we can't shoot any closer than about 100' or so because we can't wind the catapult any less."
"And we really should be clear on where we're supposed to go. My name is Abel." He points to each of the others in turn, reciting their names. "Bertram, Clarice, Dubbin and Edalbert."
Meanwhile, Garrett makes preparations for a trap on the outside of the wall. He is careful not to disturb the surprises that Xenia had earlier prepared.
Syr gets ready to go out scouting but he is waiting to be made invisible. Oni is probably waiting for the opportune time to do so.
Toros is still waiting patiently to fight the coming creatures.
DM INFO Please assign the students to catapults and towers when they need to fight.
Catapult maximum range - 500' Catapult minimum range - 100'
Splash damage - within a 20'x20' square - 2d6 for central squares, 1d6 for perimeter
Winding times for 2-man crew: 6 rounds for 420'-500' 5 rounds for 260'-400' 4 rounds for 100'-260'
Reload Time: 1 round
Aiming Time: 1 round for traversing catapult. A shorter or longer shot on same line doesn't require re-aiming.
Firing Time: 1 round
Toros (sub Ceil) Wednesday December 28th, 2005 7:55:32 AM
"Hey! Appolo! Did you forget this CAT? What do you want me to set up my bow and arrows?" Toros reminds the leader, ten mumbles "Humansss, if you don't look like him, then your over look! SSShheeessh!"He pouts.
Garrett Wednesday December 28th, 2005 1:08:32 PM
"You know Appolo, I don't think we will have time for more than one shot with each of the catapults. Our time might be better served by taking one shot with each already loaded catapult and then going to arrows. I can put the windwall farther out to my maximum range of about 190 feet. If they aren't shooting at us, we won't even need the windwall, and can go to the bows immediately. If we aren't able to get a second shot with the catapults, then we have wasted alot of valuable time."
"I will have several battle prep spells to cast once they charge us, that will need to be in place before they arrive. Spending those several rounds cranking a catapult is valuable time I could be spending to magically enhance our few combatants."
Xenia Wednesday December 28th, 2005 4:05:08 PM
She's given her input. What she thinks and how she got there. Now's time for the leaders to set things up. That's what leaders do.
"So, um, could you go over what you want us to do again, 'Ppolo. Just to make double sure we got the details."
"I'll take the Center Catapult, and we'll aim straight up. We'll try and hit 'em at 500 feet and again at 100."
Syr d20+16=32 Wednesday December 28th, 2005 6:37:01 PM
The elf waves Oni off, remembering that he forgot something. Taking two vials from his pack he smiles and says, "I've got a couple potions to help."
He ties the rope down and throws it over the wall. Before climbing down he drinks first a pass without trace potion and second, an invisibility potion. Before climbing down he winks at Appolo, "Be back in a few, I have a spare of each if need be."
Once on the ground, he sprints the first three hundred feet to save time. Approaching the trees, he slows down and takes his time to remain concealed.
(Move silently 32.. can't do too much better than that)
Scouting - Syr Only (DM JohnP) Wednesday December 28th, 2005 10:44:28 PM
Syr only -
Highlight to display spoiler: {You drop over the wall and shinny down to the ground. The grass is undisturbed except for the barely visible signs of the trap prepared by Xenia.
Sprinting out from the wall, you cross several lines marked in the grass with crushed stone. You guess that these are what the catapult crews use for judging distance.
Finally, after a quick sprint, you stop approximately 300' yards from the wall. It's still about 200' from the trees so even your elven sight cannot yet penetrate the shadows under the trees.
Moving quietly, you approach the trees. Your senses are alert, trying to pick up signs of the enemy.
Please make some Spot and Listen rolls }
Final Preparations (DM JohnP) Wednesday December 28th, 2005 10:59:46 PM
After Syr drops over the wall, everyone moves about after deciding what to do.
The students are still waiting for someone to give them directions on where to go and firing instructions for the catapults.
DM Info - Please post your location on the map once you've decided (or been told) where to go.
Appolo will need to tell the students (A, B, C, D, E) where to go and what squares to aim at.
Syr will be back from his scouting soon and provide some information on what is lurking in the trees.
Oni Borzzone Thursday December 29th, 2005 1:09:50 AM
After Syr had left, he moves overtoward Sppollo. "Umm, sir, was our friend Syr waiting for me to cast an invisibility spell on him? It just occurred to me he was. I am used to doing my fighting alone, so in the future if there is something I need to help with or do, or something you think i should know, please tell me anyways. Ok?" He then stands by the leader showing confidence to the students.
Appolo Thursday December 29th, 2005 10:38:18 AM
Appolo smiles at Syr"remember do not engage them just watch them and get back here in one piece."
Appolo looks the map over"OH my mistake.Toros I want you here in the center stay invisble for as long as possible. You will be used to reinforce whichever part of the wall needs.Oni and I will take the west tower Xenia I want you on Garrets left Syr will be on Garrets right and Garret you will be in the center.Once we have fired the catapults I want all the students to gather as quickly as possible in the east tower and reload that catapult for another short range shot."
Looking to Abel"Abel is it.Well you kust recieved a battle field commission. You will be in command of the west tower. You must hold it.Now for catapult assingment.Abel your in the center with Toros at the beging of the battle Garret will be there also.Abel in the center.Clarice Weat tower Catapult.Dubbin East Tower catapult Oni and I will jion you there. Bertram and Xenia catapult #4 and Edalbert catapult#2 with Syr."
"Everyone got that.Any questions.Garret you are quite right only use wind wall if the enemy uses weapons that it has an effect on."
Turning to Oni"Yes my friend I shall remember to do that.Just wasn't sure if that was in your repetiore."
Looking back at the map"Ok folks let's get those catapults ready.Remember One max range shot and one minium range shot.Abel once you reach the tower be sure and reload that catapult for another short range shot."
Xenia Thursday December 29th, 2005 11:07:54 AM
The rogue looks at Appolo with a frown.
"You want me on Garrett's left and at Catapult 4. But Catapult 4 is to the right of Garrett."
"I'm thinking that you mean Catapult 2. I'll be there if you need me."
Garrett Thursday December 29th, 2005 5:17:00 PM
Garrett moves to the center catapult(Q108 i believe) with whichever student is there and prepares the catapult for firing.
Syr d20+8=21 d20+4=16 Thursday December 29th, 2005 5:49:31 PM
Syr stealthily (is that a word?) approaches the treeline keeping his senses attuned to the forest in front of him. He is looking for the numbers and type of any enemy force. (Spot 21 listen 16)
Garrett Thursday December 29th, 2005 9:00:11 PM
Just prior to heading to the catapult, Garrett offers to enhance someones armoror shield, and someones weapon. "I have two spells that each last for 9 hours. Magic Vestment will make a shield or armor +2(enhancement bonus), and greater Magic Weapon will do the same to a melee Weapon. Whoever doesn't have a magical Weapon or Shield/Armor, let me know and I'll give you a boost."
Garrett will cast them on the first two party members that request either of the spells. Should none of the party need or want the spells, then I will cast them upon two students.
"Appolo, I was also thinking about the windwall. If we see any of the glider creatures coming at us, I don't think I should cast it. The spell deflects everything upward into the air. If the glider creatures hit it, they could use it as an updraft to give themselves the ability to possibly glide anywhere in the compound."
"Also, I am planning on summoning a celestial lion once our opponents approach the wall. It will hopefully cause some havoc with troops trying to put up ladders or ascend the wall. I can use it on the first wave, and that way we can save Xenia's buried surprise for the second wave. I'm still working on my planning for using what spells at what points of the battle, but should be able to come up with a few little tricks for wave one and wave two."
Xenia Thursday December 29th, 2005 9:47:14 PM
"Hey, yeah Garrett," Xenia pipes up. "I could use some magic on this Chain. I got a magic rapier. But on the wall, the reach from this Chain could come in handy."

Syr only - Highlight to display spoiler: {The elven monk creeps ever closer to the treeline. As he nears the trees he senses that there are many creatures hidden in the undergrowth. He doesn't hear anything but notices some glints of moonlight off metal and leather.
Syr also hears something in the treetops but cannot see anything up there.
You are approximately 80' from the trees right now. Attempting to count the opponents or identify specific targets will require you to move closer.
At present, you are in Square O 10 of the Large Scale Map. }
Positions Everyone! (DM JohnP) Thursday December 29th, 2005 10:30:18 PM Appolo directs everyone to their positions on the walls and towers. The students scamper off to their places.
Toros crouches on the wall. His large size prevents him from easily moving about on the wall. DM Note - Toros will have to "squeeze" between the crenellations and tower or catapults. Double movement cost to do so.
Garrett offers to enchant weapons or armor for people. Xenia takes that offer for her spiked chain.
DM Note - I've placed people on the map, following Appolo's instructions as best as possible. There is still time to shuffle around if you like.
Garrett Thursday December 29th, 2005 11:20:33 PM
"Okay Xenia" Garrett casts Greater Magic Weapon on her chain(+2 enhancement bonus, lasts for 9 hours). "Anyone for a boost to their armor or shield?"
After enhancing someones armor or shield as requested, Garrett moves to his position at the catapult and casts Airwalk upon himself.
"I hope Syr is doing all right. They should be coming soon according to what Alemi said."
Garrett smiles and thinks to himself that were he to fall today, he would die a happy man. After all, he thinks, what death could be more noble and honorable than that of one defending the house and lives of Alemi and Domi.
Garrett (Supplemental) Thursday December 29th, 2005 11:29:20 PM
Spells in effect:
Symbol of sleep: 90 minutes; placed on wall, right side, 15' from end, 4' high. effects all HD of evil creatures seeing it, putting them in magical sleep. Will:19 to negate.
Airwalk: 90 Minutes; Placed on Garrett, allows one to walk on air as if solid, ascending and descending at 45 degree angle.
DM JohnP - I missed it when you first posted about casting the Symbol of Sleep spell, but this has a material cost of 1000 gp.
Also, my reading of the spell description is that the Symbol is (in this case) triggered by the first evil creature that comes within 60' of the symbol. Once triggered, it affects all creatures within 60' that do not have total cover from the symbol. I'm going to have to read the DMG about cover to determine how it would affect characters on the wall.
Oni Borzzone Friday December 30th, 2005 12:54:15 AM
Oni finds a spot by the catapult to watch and wait. He leans his staff against the wall with in easy reach.
Garrett (ooc) Friday December 30th, 2005 10:06:28 AM
(Sorry, missed the material cost. Don't have 1000, so I wouldn't have memorized the spell in the first place. As long as you are ok with it John, I will just memorize a different spell in it's place.)
DM JohnP - I'm fine with it ... and it makes the wall assault much more interesting than piles of sleeping opponents.
Xenia d20+20=30 d20+13=22 Friday December 30th, 2005 11:57:40 AM
"Alright, Bertie," Xenia stands behind the Catapult. She sigths up it's length to get a good aim. "Lets make sure we got this right." She says to the student. Again, the rogue reviews the aim. Almost straight out and 60 feet this side of the treeline. "Looks good." (Target Row N 60 feet from the treeline.)
Xenia places her bow within easy reach, and she holds one hand to shade her eyes as she scans the distant treeline.
"I'll give the signal, and then you release the catapult. I'll help you reload, and we'll fire again. Should get 'em at around 100 feet out. The we switch to bow and javelin. If they get to the wall, I'm gonna switch to chain. I might disappear, but I'll be here. I'll be waiting for them to try and climb up into range. Then I'll hit 'em when from outta nowhere."
"I hope Syr gets back in time. Hate to dump a bunch 'o rocks down on him."

Appolo will make sure everyone gets to there positon and moving down the line to help load and aim the catapults.he has had some experience with such weapons aboard ship catapults and balista's are a war ships principle weapons. He looks at garret I will leave the use of your magic to your discretion just save most of it for the second wave.Don't want to shoot our wad too soon.We face the first wave with might and the second with magic. As far as flying creatures go don't hestiate to use wind wall if the enemy uses bows in volley fire we can't stand up to a hail of arrows for too long nor can we match therir volume if they choose to volley fire on us.We can deal with indivial flyers rather then be burried undera hail of arrows<but again I leave to your discretion.I faith in you and the rest."he the moves to hsi own tower and pchecks the catapult hopefully ONi and the student have it ready.
Garrett Friday December 30th, 2005 8:15:11 PM
Greater Magic Weapon: 9 hours; placed on Xenia's spiked chain, +2 enhancement bonus.
Airwalk: 90 Minutes; Placed on Garrett, allows one to walk on air as if solid, ascending and descending at 45 degree angle.
Co-ordinating with Xenia, Garrett and his student target row Q, at 60' from the tree line with their catapult. With any luck we can cream a bunch of them in that area.
(Garrett will sub in True Sight for the Symbol of sleep.)
Scouting Further - Syr Only (DM JohnP) d20+1=16 Friday December 30th, 2005 10:39:46 PM
Syr only - Highlight to display spoiler: {Syr creeps closer, edging up to the trees. The Invisibility and Pass Without Trace seem to be working.
Looking into the shadows, Syr can now see lots of creatures prepared to assault Oshirr House. In the half-light he can't tell what exactly they are since he sees horns and muscular bodies. At a quick glance, he estimates that there are more than 50 or 60 creatures hiding in the trees.
At the same time, he can things moving in the trees overhead but cannot see anything.
Just then, Syr overhears chanting coming from several places within the trees from both on the ground and overhead.
When he turns back towards Oshirr House Syr can see a mist or fog rising from the two gullies. Before they are obscured by the mist, you can see that the gullies are approximately 10' deep with trickles of water in the bottom.
You are currently in square O 6 on the large scale map.
Please make some Listen and Spot rolls. }
Is this the Start? (DM JohnP) Friday December 30th, 2005 10:57:09 PM
Everyone makes final arrangements for the coming assault.
Garrett casts some final preparatory spells on himself and Xenia. DM Note - True Seeing also has a material cost of 250 gp. No other character has requested it, so cast Magic Vestment and Greater Magic Weapon on the students weapons if you want.
Xenia can't help but fiddle with the catapult, checking it's aim and ensuring that it is properly loaded.
Oni maintains a poise of relaxation while Appolo can't help but worry.
Everyone looking towards the treeline can see fog forming in the gullies close to the tree-line.
In addition to catapults, there are many longbows and light crossbows available on the wall with essentially unlimited ammunition.
There are also polearms (i.e. halberds) available.
When firing catapult, please indicate which square on the large scale you are aiming at (preferably with row and column).
Once the catapults are fired, I'm considering making one post covering the advance of the enemy to the next catapult shot. Otherwise, it's 10 rounds of "I wind the catapult". If anyone plans to cast magic, fire missile weapons, etc. during that time please indicate it in the first post after the catapult fire is resolved.
Garrett Saturday December 31st, 2005 10:44:19 AM
(dang material costs. Guess I'll make it summon monster V. Sorry bout that.) (Garrett will be casting spells between catapult shots.)
Calling out to everyone else. "They're going to obscure the gullies and attack out of them. We're going to have to shorten our first catapult shot in order to be able to see them when they attack."
Garrett and the student will readjust the targeting on the catapult to be aimed at S16 on the large map. We will ready to fire upon the start of the attack, and opponents crossing that area.
Garrett (supplemental) Saturday December 31st, 2005 10:47:45 AM
Garrett Already cast Greater Magic weapon on Xenia's Chain, but since nobody requested the Magic Vestment, I will put it on the armor of a student as long as any are wearing armor.
Xenia Sunday January 1st, 2006 6:42:35 PM
"Can anyone throw a fireball at the treeline?" the rogue calls out. "If they put up a fog bank, that'll burn it right off!"
If no one can put a fireball at the treeline, Xenia will place the final bead of her necklace in with the catapult payload and instruct the student to let her rip.
(I was under the impression that Magic Vestment wouldn't stack with current armor bonus. If that's no the case, then Xenia will take the Magic Vestment too. Thanks.)
Garrett(ooc) Monday January 2nd, 2006 11:06:13 AM
(Magic vestment gives existing armor a +2 enhancement bonus. It is just like making armor or shields magical in the usual way. If your shield or armor is already magical, it will not stack. If either an armor or a shield is not magical, or only +1, vestment makes it +2.)
Xenia - OoC Monday January 2nd, 2006 8:19:46 PM
Well, that would raise my AC by One. I'll take it. Thanks.
Oni Borzzone Tuesday January 3rd, 2006 2:18:45 AM
Hearing Xenia asking for fire, Oni speaks just loud enough for her to hear, "Appollo wants the magic saved until they throw there second attack on us remeber. I have the ball of flame spell, but I cant cast it that far away."
After he says that, he walks around the catapult, casting magic armor spells on the students at his location.
"The armor is magical, it may help a bit. You have all been through this fighting before. Keep your eyes open for anything strange, or different, then tell me if you would. This is my first battle against these fools, so your itelligence and opinions are vbery important." As he says these words he continually looks the students in the eyes. He also pats them on the back, shoulders or noggins.
Scouting Report - Syr Only (DM JohnP) Tuesday January 3rd, 2006 9:05:51 AM
Syr only - Highlight to display spoiler: {Syr studies the group of creatures assembled under the trees. He can hear quiet commands and muttered complaints. There is an occasional "knock" as something wooden is banged against a tree.
Overhead, Syr can hear rustling and mvoement with occasional whispered conversations. Nothing can be seen through the leaves of the trees, however.
Looking carefully, Syr can see that most of the creatures under the trees are equipped with falchions slung over their backs. A few, however, have bucklers and scimitars instead. Each group of creatures appears to be clustered around something, maybe a ladder.
Syr wracks his mind and the words being chanted sound like those used to craft an illusion spell, probably Silent Image.
Looking hehind him, Syr can see the fog spreading aross the width of the field.

DM Apology (JohnP) Tuesday January 3rd, 2006 9:33:40 AM
I missed the DM post last night. I will post tonight, however.
Here's a revision to catapult aiming & damage. - aim for a specific 20' square on large scale map - damage is 3d6 in central 5' squares, 2d6 in perimeter 5' squares, 1d6 in surrounding 5' squares
First Catapult Shot (DM JohnP) Tuesday January 3rd, 2006 10:17:35 PM Garrett issues orders to re-direct the target of the catapult, thinking that the opponents will try to sneak closer using the fog. Then he takes the time to enhance the armor of Xenia.
Oni puts mage armor on the students, providing some slight improvement for some of them.
Appolo and Toros are silent.
When she sees the fog forming, Xenia fears that the opponents are about to use it to sneak closer. She places the final bead from her necklace in the catapult's bucket and instructs the student to fire at the fog. He fiddles a bit and re-aims the catapult. During this interval, everyone can see the fog moving to cloak the treeline in front of Oshirr House.
Finally, the student pulls the trigger and flings his payload of rocks out into the dark. The group can hear the rocks whistling as they fly through the air. Finally, out at the treeline, they all can see the burst of flame as the bead erupts into a fireball. Something seems a little unusual, though.
Will save DC 14 Highlight to display spoiler: {The fog is an illusion, but nothing can be seen behind it.}
Following the catapult shot, the party can see the fog bank moving. It now forms a line between the two gullies, obsuring ground level view of the trees.

In a moment, a load of rocks crashes into the ground not too far from him. This is immediately followed by a flash of light as a fireball erupts. Fortunately, he is out of the range of the explosion.
Still, it provides the cover that he needs for his retreat. After sneaking back some distance, he sprints back to the fort. }
Toros d20+10=22 Wednesday January 4th, 2006 5:53:29 AM
"The fog is just an illusion" Toros warns the others, having been silent for a while.
"I also have a couple of scrolls to create illusions of our own, if you have any good idea of any silent images that could work well?"
"I guess I can also prepare a couple of invisible servants to load and fire these bows continuously." says the Taur showing the longbows and crossbows avaýlable on the wall.

The party looks toward the trees while Syr calls from the base of the wall. What they see depends on whether they have recognized the fog bank as an illusion.
Those who eyes pierced the illusion see the following. Highlight to display spoiler: {Toros, Garrett and Oni can see ranks of creatures approximately 20' behind the fogbank, screened by it.}
Everyone else sees the fog bank continue to roll towards Oshirr House, neither thinning or wavering as it does.
Garrett had ordered the re-aiming of the catapult. It was fired when the targets reached the target point. The load of rocks sails off into the night sky, finally crashing to earth. Edalbert, on catapult 4 also saw through the illusion and fired when the opponents entered his targeted square. Dubbin, on the east tower, didn't hear the command and fired also even though he couldn't see anything.
Garrett and anyone else who pierced illusion - Highlight to display spoiler: {You see some of the figures in the distance fall to the ground. Distressingly, all of them climb to their feet, pick up something from the ground and reform.}
After four rounds, the fog bank has reached the point where Appolo has ordered the catapults to be targetted.

Those commanding catapults being loaded need to select new aiming points.

Toros Thursday January 5th, 2006 7:06:36 AM
Seeing the fallen ones climb to their feet and reform, Toros decides to try to use the forces of plants to stop or slow down the creatures approaching from the ground. If there are enough suitable plants he will activate his tattoo and cast "entangle" to effect as many of them possible (John, please help me to choose the best squares!?). If the Taur has enough time (2-3 rounds?) he will repeat the same to form a living line of barrier to prevent the approach of the coming creatures for a minute, a time that would be important for the effective use of the catapults.
Ed. DM JohnP - most of the creatures are now in row 15, with some laggards in row 14. They are all between columns M to S. Entangle will cover, for all intents and purposes, 10 squares (80' side to side) on the large map so two casts should catch most of the advancing foot soldiers.
Where to cast depends on what you want to do. Halting the advance would be squares M15 to S15. If you want to channel the advance, you can target some other squares.
Toros - OOC Thursday January 5th, 2006 10:01:19 AM
Thank you! Yes, please consider two entangles are cast to capture most of the foot soldiers in the squares between M15 and S15.

"The creatures are about 20 feet behind the fogbank if you can't see them. The catapults didn't kill anyone, just knocked them down. I don't know much about catapults, but that seems to say that these guys are either pretty darn good, or illusions. I'm not sure which. Either way, I can't dispel anything until it's much closer."
Garrett tells Abel to disregard our catapult for the moment and to go help pull Syr up the wall. After that to help on catapult 4 or 5, which each only have one person on them.
Garrett begins his powering up process by casting Shield of Faith.
"Appolo, I'm sending Abel to get Syr and then help out on one of the other catapults. They will have a better angle for attack once it gets to short range, and I will need time to cast some spells for their arrival."

From the looks of the field, the approaching opponents seem to be moving slowly. That might be because of the ladders that each group is carrying. Each of the ladders seems to be long enough to reach the top of the wall.
Farther back, several flocks (for want of a better word) of flyers are coming towards Oshirr House.

Garrett's active Spells:
Airwalk: 90 Minutes; able to walk/climb on air. Shield of Faith: 90 rounds; +3 Defelection bonus.
Garrett loads the catapult and tells Abel to re aim for P23.
"Appolo, the flyers are coming from the rear. If those flyers used to be Kobolds as Alemi said, they shouldn't be able to pass the wind wall. Tiny and small flying creatures are unable to pass through it. It should also cause some problems for the guys trying to pull those heavy ladders through. You want me to throw it next? My catapult is ready for one final shot.
Appolo Friday January 6th, 2006 2:19:44 PM
Appolo looks over the battle field and turns to Oni"Ok I think the second wave is going to be airborn.Get ready.Load the catapult for the final shor range shot 100 paces.I need to go down on the wall and talk to the others."After giving Oni his instructions Appolo lowers a rope and climbs down ot the wall.He then instructs Xenia on where to fir her shot O25.100 paces out. Then heads over to Garret"yes my firend wait a little and let them advance once they have committed themselves release the wind." Turning to where he thinks Toros is"Tots my firend when the enemy reaches 100 paces out cast your spell there. Then we will fire the catapults.
He then moves over to Syr "Ok my firend outside of what we all know.Is there anything waiting in those trees that I don't know about.Like giants or Ogre's?"
Xenia Friday January 6th, 2006 3:27:34 PM
"Gotcha, 'Ppolo!" Xenia calls back. "Might have to settle for a little to the left. That's where we're set up for now. If we have time, we'll bring the aim in a bit."
Aside from that, the rogue works furiously, helping Bertram crank the catapult back for the final shot.

The creatures continue to move forward, getting closer and closer to the wall. They appear to be moving 20' per action (40' per round).
After two rounds, Abel has Catapult 3 ready for another shot. The next round, he fires when the creatures advance into the square that he has targeted. Abel has the satisfaction of seeing parts of two squads tumble to the ground. Even better, one of the creatures does not get up again.
The fogbank and the creatures continue to move and are 40' closer after another round. The groups that were knocked stand up and lag behind. Now the fog and the creatures are up to the point where Toros was planning to use his Entangle Tattoo.
Garrett is preparing to cast further spells.
Xenia is preparing to adjust the aim of Catapult 2 but it is still being wound up.
Appolo moves about, preparing his people for the assault.
Syr has his catapult ready to fire, and can release it when he pleases.

Oni watches as the army advances. He also looks over the field of battle to his left, hoping it will not spill over to this side. It looked like this was going to be a mess. Looking around, he hoped none of these youngsters would lose their life. Not letting his apprehension show, he is nonchalant about the upcoming battle.

The energy weapon struck down one of the attackers in squad 5. Map not changed to reflect this. BTW, this spell has multiple attacks because of you BAB.
The previous round (round 8) he had cast Divine Power on himself and is now blessed with the might of ... well, not Domi, but something else.
Looking out at the approaching forces, he can see that the ground troops look like orcs. Tough orcs, from what he has seen of them absorbing catapult shots. And they seem to have horns on their heads. They are advancing about 40' per round.
The flyers have now settled on the ground and seem to be moving almost 80' per round. The creatures look like kobolds with bat wings and are small in stature.
Oni waits calmly for the troops to get close.
Toros activates his Tattoo and casts Entangle at the ground troops. I targetted it on the ground forces, the ones with ladders and big swords. It still took a lot of the flyers, too.
Appolo returns to the east tower and fires the catapult (into square O24). Squads 2 and 3 are knocked down from the stones.
Xenia and Bertie have the catapult ready. They can shoot it now at squad 1, or re-aim. Include in your next post if you fired, or are taking a turn to aim.
Syr fires the catapult at squad 5, hitting that squad directly. The load of stones also knocks down squad 6 beside it.
========================================
The fog disappears from the field, allowing everyone to see the approaching groups.
The first squad of fey orcs did not get entangled but are slowed by the growth. They are not completely out of the spell's area.
The second squad is not only knocked down by the last catapult shot but completely entwined by the spell. They struggle but cannot even get to their feet.
The third was knocked down by the catapult shot. They manage to get to their feet and advance only a short distance.
The fourth squad is also only slowed by the Entangle spell and cannot advance out of the spell's area.
The fifth and sixth squads get to their feet and advance only a short distance.
Squad seven is held firmly by the Entangle spell. They cannot move forward.
Only portions of the two groups of flyers on the west side are slowed by the spell. The entire groups slow down, though, to allow the entangled members to keep pace. The front group advances to within 100' of Oshirr House, shaking out slings as they do.
The two flyer groups on the east side swing around the Entangle spell.
Catapults Catapult 1 - fired, 4 rounds to wind Catapult 2 - 1 to adjust aim (or can be fired) Catapult 3 - 2 rounds of winding, 1 to load Catapult 4 - fired, 8 rounds to wind (unless Syr gets help) Catapult 5 - 3 turns to wind

Garrett then casts Windwall Starting in Square D100, and extending to U100. Windwall is 90' long, 2' thick, and 45' high.
Garrett then yells out. "Wind wall is up everyone. It goes from about 10 feet to the west of the west tower to my position, and is about 30 feet from the edge of the wall. He re-targets the spiritual longsword and sees it hit an attacker. He then casts Windwall to keep the smaller flyers away. ed. DM JohnP - removed the part about the spell not causing damage, it does.
Appolo shouts for all the students but Clarice to head towards the east tower. Then he requests that Oni cast an offensive spell.
Xenia fires the catapult at squad 1, again having the satisfaction of seeing them fall down. Again, it appears that the fey-orcs shrug off most of the damage. However, the edge of the catapult shot hits two of the flyers and almost crushes them. It seems that these things are not resistant to physical damage. The dark rogue is shouting at Bertie and he's somewhat intimidated by her so he remains to keep cranking the catapult.
Oni shoots a Flaming Sphere at the squad closest to the east tower. The sphere hits one of the fey-orcs that was knocked down by Xenia's catapult shot and burns it. Oni has the satisfaction of hearing faint screams fade as the creature dies. DM JohnP - I directed the Sphere at the closest squad and rolled for damage.
Syr steers his student to the east tower and prepares for the assault. DM JohnP - I left you on the wall. If you intended to go to a tower, I will make the adjustment.
Toros downs an elixir and fades from view.
========================================
Flyers 1 fire their slings at the group on the west tower, mainly trying to make the defenders keep their heads down. Their sling bullets are deflected away by the Windwall cast by Garrett. Two of their number who were knocked down by the catapult shot get to their feet and follow along as the squad advances just short of the Windwall.
Flyers 2 advance out of the Entangle spell and come closer to the wall. They fire their slings with the same result.
When these creatures approach, the defenders on the wall can see that each is armed with a half-spear and a sling. Behind them are three other fey-kobolds, one of whom starts waving it's arms and making gestures. A cloud of glittery dust falls over everyone on top of the west tower. Squad 1 gets to their feet and moves out of the entangled area. They are now close enough for everyone to see that they are carrying a ladder long enough to reach the top of the towers. Each also is armed with a falchion slung over their back.
Behind the squad is a fey-orc equipped with a scimitar and buckler. Those with sensitive ears can hear the fey-orc ordering the squad to pull it free from the entangled area.
Squad 2 is still on the ground and cannot break free of the Entangle spell. The sergeant behind them also cannot break free.
There is another leader-type fey-orc near them and he becomes engulfed by the rampant vegetation.
Squad 3 becomes entangled in the plant growth and cannot advance. Their sergeant is able to move but he stays with them to shout encouragement.
Squad 4 becomes entangled along with their sergeant and the leader behind them.
Squad 5 and their sergeant are also caught by the twining grass.
Squad 6 and their sergeant are able to avoid the grass and move ahead. The leader behind them is caught by the grass.
Squad 7 is able to break free of the spell's effect but cannot move this turn. Their sergeant avoid the vegetation's grasp and stays to shout orders.
Squad 8 avoids the plants beneath their feet and slowly advance. Their sergeant barely avoids the vegetation but the leader is entwined.
The third flyer group skirts the edge of the Entangle spell and moves closer.
The fourth flyer group manages to escape the spell and moves forward as well.
The group of fey-kobold leaders move ahead 40' and stop. One of them starts gesturing and another cloud of golden dust falls over the east tower.

For a moment his vision clouds but then he focuses his will and he is able to see. He moves the Flaming Sphere and burns one of the fey-orcs. I understood that you spent a Hero Point to re-roll the save.
Then Oni casts a spell targetted at the spellcaster who targetted him. The bolt arches over the heads of the first squad but burns through the second to reach the caster. The little fey-kobolds try to scramble out of the way but are burned to smoking crisps by the bolt of electricity. On the other hand, I couldn't tell what spell you cast. From the damage rolled, it looked like Lightning Bolt. It makes a difference because of the damage to intervening characters.
Toro casts a spell on Garrett and then squeezes by the catapult.
Garrett shouts some advice and then sees that Oni has already dealt with one caster. He can target his Silence spell at the other caster who dusted the east tower. Garrett can't tell yet if it was effective. His Spiritual Longsword continues to swing at the fey-orcs, dropping it's target on the first swing. The spell now targets another fey-orc. Looking out, Garrett can see a group that looks to be a commander surrounded by his bodyguards. I didn't see that Garrett moved, so re-targetted the spell.
Xenia keeps cranking the catapult with Bertie.
Appolo is unaffected by the dust and offers some guidance to Clarice and Oni.
Syr moves into the east tower along with Abel.

The first squad of flyers advance to the Windwall and cannot proceed. They move to the west, spilling around the end of the wall. Once there, several of them fire with slings. The bullets fly harmless over the people on the west tower since they have total cover from this squad.
The second flyer squad sees that the first squad cannot break through the wall and move to go around it.
The group of fey-kobold leaders keep pace with the squads. The corpse of the spellcaster is left behind.
The first squad of fey-orcs move around the Sphere and then angle towards the west tower. They nearly reach the Windwall
The second squad is able to break free, for the time being, but are still lying on the ground within the area of the Entangle spell.
Squad 3, Squad 4 and Squad 5 cannot break free and remain entangled.
Squad 6 and Squad 7 become entangled and cannot move forward.
Squad 8 continues to advance and now approaches the east tower.
Sergeants S1, S4, S5 cannot break free and remain entangled.
Sergeant S2 manages to break free of the plants' grasp but cannot advance.
Sergeant S3 continues to elude the plants but stays with his squad.
Sergeants S6 and S7 become entangled.
Sergeant S8 keeps pace with his squad, barking orders as they approach the tower.
Leader L1, L2 and L3 remain entangled while L4 is able to break free.
The commander and his bodyguards continue to evade the spell's grasp and slowly move forward.
The third squad of flyers fire their slings at the students on the east tower then advance closer. One manages a lucky shot and hits Syr for 2 hitpoints. Abel also gets hit once for 3 hitpoints.
The fourth squad of flyers advance and then fire. Again, Syr is hit once for 2 hitpoints and Abel is hit for 2 hitpoints.
For the most part, the missile fire is merely a nuisance. Perhaps it is intended to keep the defenders back from the edge of the wall for when the scaling ladders go up.
The spellcaster and leaders behind the two squads also advance. The spellcaster cannot cast a spell.

Once th catapult is loaded and aimed. He will signal Xenia to fire her's at the entagled enemy.
Toros fires his Magic Missile wand at the sergeant directing the fey-orc squad approaching the east tower. The missiles visibly hurt the fey-orc but don't put him down.
Syr directs the students with him to shelter from the fey-kobolds. The catapult is still getting wound up, though as the students keep to their assigned task.
Garrett sets his Spiritual Longsword swinging at the fey-orcs in the 5th squad. It drops another one and then the Protector directs it to another target. Garrett calls down a Flame Strike at what he has identified as the command group. The flame smashes the group and the only one who manages to dodge even a portion of the flame is Leader L3.
Xenia and Bertie keep cranking on the catapult.
Appolo agrees with the Protector's assessment and directs some catapult fire.
========================================
Flyers Squad 1 continue to harass the people atop the west tower, as does Flyers Squad 2. The two are almost all mingled together now and the fey-kobold leaders are right behind them.
Fey-orc Squad 1 pushes forward through the Windwall and approach the base of the west tower. They look to be preparing to set their siege ladder next turn. Their sergeant, S1, remains entangled.
Fey-orc Squad 2 manage to evade the Entangle spell and get to their feet. They advance slightly towards Oshirr House. Their sergeant, S2, also is not tangled and can keep pace with them.
Fey-orc Squad 3 break free of the spell but cannot advance. Their sergeant S3 is entangled, though.
Fey-orc Squad 4 and their sergeant S4 cannot break free.
Fey-orc Squad 5 can break free but cannot advance. Their sergeant S5 remains stuck.
Fey-orc Squads 6 and 7, and their sergeants S6 and S7, cannot break free of the Entangle spell.
Fey-orc Squad 8 reach the bottom of the east tower and set the base of their siege ladder. Next round the ladder will be set up and fey-orcs will begin to climb. Their sergeant S8 is shouting at them to hurry.
The only leader that can escape the spell's grasp is L3. The Flame Strike must have burned away the vegetation around him.
When the smoke from Garrett's Flame Strike clears, the only member of the targetted group still standing is C1. He continues to evade the grasp of the vegetation and moves forward. He manages to get out of the spell's area.
With the people on top of the east tower sheltering, the flyers on that side simply edge a bit closer.

Xenia Friday January 13th, 2006 12:31:22 PM
Still cranking at the catapult, Xenia calls out an answer.
"No good, 'Ppolo! It only covers 20 feet in the center of the wall!"
Syr (AC 26/25 HP 64/68) Friday January 13th, 2006 6:35:31 PM
With a snap, the elf moves back into action, redirecting the catapult to aim in front of the enflamed leader's (AG-AJ) guards to account for their advance. Speaking down to the students that manned catapult 4, "Okay, stand by to repel the ladders."
(OOC: Don't you hate it when you read the map wrong? Sorry about that)
Toros activates his Tattoo for the last time to cast Entangle at the squad about to assault the east tower. He manages to catch that squad plus the two flyer squads in the area of the spell. Then he retrieves a scroll to use next turn.
Oni redirects his Flaming Sphere to attack fey-orc Squad 2. The targeted fey-orc cannot avoid the sphere and drops to the ground, a burned husk. Oni casts a Scorching Ray at the squad beneath the west tower. He drops two fey-orcs, burning a neat hole through one's head. I rolled to confirm the critical hit (not that it was needed) and for the second ray.
The fey-kobolds yelp excitedly when Oni leans over the edge to fire his rays. You get the impression that the next person who is exposed will be met with a hail of sling bullets.
Garrett'sSpiritual Longsword strikes down another fey-orc in Squad 5. That group is barely large enough now to carry the ladder. Then he begins casting a summoning spell, using the rest of his actions. Casting time for Summon Monster V is 1 round, meaning that it is a full round action this round. Next round you get standard and move actions and can re-direct the spell then.
Xenia and Bertie keep cranking the catapult back. Looking at the field, it would be an action to adjust the aim of the catapult slightly as Xenia wants. BTW -- the slingstones last round were targeted at Syr and Abel on the east tower. Xenia did not get hit.
Appolo grabs a polearm, ready to push the ladder away when the fey-orcs push it up. Beside him, Clarice keeps winding the catapult even though she cannot see very well.
Syr issues some orders to re-aim the catapult. Abel and Edalbert look questioningly at Syr. Abel speaks up, "There's no one there, sir. And the commanders guards are all dead, plus he's too close to hit. We could hit some of the squads in the centre without even re-aiming." The students don't re-aim. Right now, it could hit Squad 5 without moving, or swing to the left to hit squads 3 and 4.
========================================
The fey-kobold leaders scream at their underlings, directing them to form into squads again. And they scream about watching for spellcasters up above. The fey-kobolds mill about and form up into two squads again.
Fey-orc Squad 1 drop one end of the ladder and push it up into place. It slams against the tower top and Appolo gets a chance to dislodge it. Next round, the fey-orcs will start swarming up the ladder. The squad members not holding the ladder wield their falchions.
Appolo -- roll an STR check vs. DC 16. The leverage of the polearm and the ladder gives you +6 on the check to dislodge the ladder
Fey-orc Squads 2, 3 and 5 become entangled. Squad 5's efforts to avoid the vines and Garrett's spell are almost comical.
Fey-orc Squad 4 struggles against the vines but cannot break free.
With their leaders' shouts ringing in their ears, Squad 6 leaves the last two members stuck in the Entangle spell and advances on the wall. They are making for the unmanned portion of the wall near Catapult 4.
Fey-orc Squad 7 manage to break free but cannot advance.
Fey-orc Squad 8 remains entangled beneath the east tower. Their ladder is bound up also, so it cannot be raised this round.
Sergeants S1, S3, and S4 struggle futilely against the vegetation.
Sergeant S2 easily eludes the vegetation and moves to the front of the squad.
Sergeants S5, S6, S7 and S8 break free of the grass but cannot advance.
The fey-orc leaders L1 and L2 also remain entangled. Leader L3 continues to remain free and escapes from the spell's area. Leader L4 breaks free this round.
The Commander, C1, advances with the part Squad 6.
Fey-kobold flyer Squad 3 slowly advance out of the spell's area as do the leader L3 and L4 and the spellcaster.
Fey-kobold Squad 4 mew helplessly in the grasp of the Entangle spell.

Rather than his scroll, his wand is what Toros rely on one more time, and five missiles emerge to hit C1 (13hp). Then Toros moves to the center, hiding in shadows...
DM Note: Per Toros' request, position of the new Entangle spell was moved. It didn't change anything except that Squad 6 and C1 are slightly further to the left. In future, please provide co-ordinates or target names (i.e. Squad 1)
Garrett completes his incantations and calls upon ... something ... to provide a temporary companion. A summoned celestial brown bear appears as close to Squad 1 as possible. The bear roars and charges into combat, hitting the lead fey-orc in Squad 1. It manages to damage the creature but not put it down. Bear appears at U-V101-102, 45' from Garrett (max range for lvl 9 caster). It then acts -- charge to attack -- using the first roll.
The Protector re-directs his Spiritual Longsword at the Commander C1 but watches it miss the fey-orc. Then he moves over to await the assault of Squad 6.
Syr instructs the students to re-aim the catapult. The students heave it over to the left so that it can be fired and then release it. The students have the satisfaction of seeing both squads get knocked down.
Appolo pushes the ladder back and shouts some orders to the defenders.
Oni re-directs the Flaming Sphere to attack another member of Squad 2. The target almost eludes the Sphere but is burned.
Xenia and Bertie finish winding the catapult and the rogue wonders about loading and re-aiming. DM Note -- I'm going to rule that winding and loading are full-round actions. Loading takes two full-round actions to complete (1 by each character). Aiming takes 1 full-round action (or 1 standard action each from two characters). Firing is a standard action. So, it is possible to get a shot off next round.
Toros fires his wand at the commander C1. He sees the fey-orc flinch as the missiles slam home.
========================================
Flyer Squad 1 and 2 stand ready with their slings for anyone to show enough of their body to shoot at the west tower. They and their sergeants shout in dismay when the ladder is pushed back.
The members of fey-orc Squad 1 try to deal with both the summoned bear and the ladder. Fey-orc#2, already wielding his falchion, steps 5' forward and chops at the bear. He just hits but almost half of which was absorbed by the bear's damage reduction. Fey-orc#4, also already wielding his weapon, also chops at the bear and hits extremely well, but does only middling damage. Fey-orc#6 has to draw his weapon, causing an attack by the bear. The bear misses so the orc is able to land a swordstroke. The final fey-orc on that side also draws his weapon and swings, hitting also. Orc 1-2 hits AC 15, 11 damage (-5 DR) Orc 1-4 hits AC 24 (threat), confirm AC 24, 16 damage (-5 DR) Bear AoO misses AC 15 Orc 1-6 hits AC 20, 11 damage (-5 DR) Orc 1-7 hits AC 18, 11 damage (-5 DR) By my count, the bear has taken 28 points of damage.
The other three members of Squad 1 are only able to pick up the ladder and are not enough to try to push it up against the tower.
Fey-orc Squad 2, the remnants of Squad 5 and the two members of Squad 6 manage to break free but cannot move or escape from the Sphere.
Fey-orc Squads 3 and 4 cannot break free and get to their feet.
Fey-orc Squad 6 pushes forward to the wall but is unable to start setting their ladder this round.
Fey-orc Squad 7 becomes entangled.
Fey-orc Squad 8 cannot break themselves or the ladder free from the plants.
Fey-orc Sergeants S1 and S3 cannot break free.
Fey-orc Sergeants S2, S5, S6 and S7 become entangled again.
Fey-orc Sergeant S4 breaks free but cannot get to his feet or move.
Fey-orc Sergeant S8 remains free and moves around his squad.
Leaders L1 and L2 cannot break free. Leader L3 becomes entangled again while Leader L4 manages to elude the plants and leave the spell area.
Commander C1 moves up with Squad 6 and prepares to assault the wall.
Flyer Squad 3 attempts to moves single file between the wall and Fey-orc Squad 8. They are nimble enough to elude the plant's grasp.
Flyer Squad 4 appears to be stuck until the spell ends. Those members who are not stuck move down to continue to harass anyone they can see on top of the tower.
The remaining fey-kobolds continue to elude the vines and exit the spell area.
Looking down the field, the defenders spot two more fliers landing outside of the Entangle field.
