As the second thief bends down to retrieve his shortsword, Conner swings once again with the hilt of his longsword, hoping to deliver the knockout blow. [Attack of Opportunity Hit AC=17 for 17 subdual]. Should he miss, or the thief remain on his feet, the burly warrior pursues him around the furniture and delivers another crippling blow, his fist wrapped around the handle of his longsword [Hit AC=23 for 17 HP subdual].
"Kadaz! Watch yer back" he yells out as yet another assailant appears from the other room.
Arm (AC 14, HP 18/18) d20+4=19 d8+4=12 Friday January 27th, 2006 5:58:29 AM
Springing into action, Arm swings at the new arrival (#3), hoping to connect before he does any damage to his friend (attk: 19, dmg: 12).
Shadow (AC 22/18 HP 28/28) d20+3=17 d20+3=9 Friday January 27th, 2006 9:50:35 AM

Kadaz (AC21, HP53/53, bulls strength) d20+14=21 d10+7=16 Friday January 27th, 2006 5:30:18 PM
How did he miss that guy? Kadaz thinks to himself. But since this guy attacked first he's fair game. Kadaz swings his axe at the guy think he can probably take one hit. "Surrender now or I'll swing again."

Apartment Fight - Round 6 (DM JohnP) Friday January 27th, 2006 9:20:06 PM Conner steps over to the second thief and punches him. The man's eyes roll back in his head and he falls unconcious to the floor.
The invisible Arm attacks the third thief, barely cutting into the thief. Attack modifiers: +2 invisible, -4 cover from the wall: hits AC 17
Shadow looks out into the hallway but doesn't see or hear anyone approaching.
Kadaz responds with barely contained fury and his axe chops deeply into the third thief. The man drops from the two wounds he has received.
Mira stands quietly, possibly stunned by the violence.
The first thief lies on the ground, slowly bleeding to death. So does the third thief. The second has a large bump swelling on his head but he is otherwise uninjured.
** OUT OF COMBAT **
The party looks about the room, taking in the shabby and battered furniture and the stack of dirty dishes, pots and cooking utensils in the small cooking area. Probably the best looking thing in this apartment is the chest by the door. The two bows found by Arm also look good, as do the weapons carried by the thieves.
Two of the thieves are slowly bleeding to death. If the party wants to save them, they will have to act quickly. The other thief is quiet and not stirring.
Kadaz d20+1=17 Saturday January 28th, 2006 8:00:50 AM
Kadaz drops to his knees beside the thief he has just dropped. He grabs a sheet off the nearby bed and tries to wrap it around the man's wounds to halt the bleeding. "Can someone help me?" he yells to the group. But even as he says that he sees the bleeding is slowing. (heal check 17)
Mira d8+1=7 Saturday January 28th, 2006 9:17:13 PM
Mira slips between the combatants to the first thief who lies slowly bleeding to death. Kneeling down beside the man she cradles his head in one hand and puts a potion to his lips. [CLW=7]
"We must question these men to find out what they are about" she says.
(OOC: I was confused when the map did not show the first thief's position / body. Sorry for any confusion. - Carla)
Conner d8+1=2 Saturday January 28th, 2006 9:19:47 PM
Conner steps over the second thief and administers a potion to the third thief [CLW=2].
"One of them knew somethiung about the necklace. Mira's right, we'd better question them. Shadow, can you search this place?"
Shadow d20+8=17 d20+3=15 Sunday January 29th, 2006 12:32:47 PM
Shadow will move away from the door, and start searching the room. "I must leave before you rouse them because if I am seen by them I might not be able to seek out the Guild ever again." (search=17 spot=15)
Arm d20=14 Monday January 30th, 2006 5:51:02 AM
Seeing Shadow's reluctance to make himself known, Arm attempts to check for traps on the chest by the door. If he doesn't find any, he'll attempt to open it. (disarm trap=14)
Shadow Monday January 30th, 2006 10:06:21 AM
OOC: Shadow is still invisible, but does not think it will last checking all of the chests for traps. That is why he said what he said.
Clean-up (DM JohnP) Monday January 30th, 2006 8:51:24 PM
The party scrambles about, trying to keep the injured thieves from expiring. Kadaz manages to stabilize the thief that he dropped. Conner then steps over and pours a potion down the man's throat. He starts to stir and blink as soon as the potion rolls down his throat.
Mira pours a potion down the throat of the first thief that Conner struck down. That thief also stops bleeding but doesn't show any sign of coming around.
While the thieves are being tended to, Shadow hurriedly searches the rooms. He wants to be out of here before the thieves come around. In addition to the bows that were previously located, he finds a rapier tucked beside and and a pouch stuffed under the mattress of one bed. Opening the pouch, he sees the glint of gold coins.
Arm discovers that the chest is not trapped but is locked.
Shadow hears the thieves start to come around and hides invisible. The second thief is still unconcious but the others are stirring. Unless someone moves to tie or otherwise restrain them, they will be back on their feet very soon. One of them, in fact, is reachign towards the daggers that he dropped when Kadaz cut him down.
The first thief moans, "Wha ... ? What do you want?"

Conner quickly relieves the thief in his care of his weapons. "I'd advise you to lay where you are unless you want another taste of m' hilt" he warns the thief in a low menacing voice.
He will remove the man's belt and lash his wrists together with it, if the man does not struggle. Otherwise, he will lay him out once again [Hit AC=28 for 14 hp subdual]
Mira (AC 17, 35 HP-Shield) Monday January 30th, 2006 11:31:29 PM
Satisfied that the fighters will keep the 'theives' subdued, Mira returns her attention to the locked chest. "I have one scroll I could use to open the chest, but," Mira whirls around looking for the invisible rogue, "maybe Shadow would have better luck? Can you pick this lock?"
The sorcerer steps away from the front of the chest to give the elf access if he so wishes.
If Shadow makes himself known to Mira, the sorcerer will whisper quietly, "I can keep you invisible for a while longer. I can cast the spell twice more if required, so have no fear that you will be discovered where you should not be!"

Arm says, "There's no need to re-cast, Mira. All we need do is roll them over or otherwise move them so that they cannot see the chest. That way, Shadow can do his work at his leisure.". Looking to Conner and Kadaz, he makes sure that they heard what he said.
Kadaz (AC21, HP53/53, bulls strength) Tuesday January 31st, 2006 6:10:49 AM
Kadaz threatens the thief with his axe. "If you touch that dagger I'll cut you hand off" he says conversationally. Assuming the thief stops reaching for it, Kadaz kicks the dagger away. "There are several of us, all with armor and big weapons. So don't do anything stupid," he warns. "And why don't you just lie down and face the wall. That way no one will get hurt any more."
Shadow d20+10=25 Tuesday January 31st, 2006 10:54:26 AM
Shadow speaks quietly to Mira, "Just make sure everyone stands in front of those guys and I will try to open up the lock. I just need to open and then I will step out into the hallway." (Open lock=25)
A Chest of Treasure (DM JohnP) Tuesday January 31st, 2006 9:12:18 PM Conner pulls the rapier away from the fallen thief and then ties him with his own clothing. Kadaz also disarms his thief and explains what would happen if they don't cooperate.
At Arm's suggestion, Conner and Kadaz turn the concious thieves towards the wall so that they can't see Shadow.
Shadow and Mira huddle over the chest. Shadow works at it and the chest opens. When the lid is turned back the two can see three vials, three pouches and some loose coins. The chest and it's lid are also heavier than it should be. When Shadow examines it, he can see the layer of lead built into the chest.
When the *clink* of coins is heard from the chest , everyone's attention goes that way. Including the two concious thieves.
"Hey! That's our stash! What are you guys looking for?", shouts the first one that Conner put down.
"Come on, tell us what you want. Maybe we can work a deal, or something."
Clearly, the thieves want to talk with the party.
Each of the thieves is wearing studded leather armor under their street clothes. Together, they were armed with a rapier, a shortsword and two daggers.

Conner keeps his captive facing the wall away from the chest.

Realizing that a rougher approach is probably best with the theives, Arm refrains from the questioning and instead heads to the door, where he looks out into the hall to make sure their actions have gone unnoticed (spot=17, listen=20).
Kadaz Wednesday February 1st, 2006 5:51:50 AM
Kadaz keeps a close eye on his thief, willing to let others take the lead in questioning. But where is his dog? He looks around to try to spot Birdie. He must have been left outside just before the fight.
Shadow d20+8=28 Wednesday February 1st, 2006 10:33:17 AM
Once the chest is open Shadow will inspect to see if there is anything in or under the lead lining. (Search=28 nat. 20) If he does not find anything he will head out into the hallway (if he is still hidden by Mira).

Now They Start Talking (DM JohnP) Wednesday February 1st, 2006 9:00:59 PM Conner growls from behind the prone thief. Kadaz also keeps his thief from seeing anything near the chest. He is wondering where Birdie has got too when he hears a quiet "woof" from the hallway.
While the others are doing this, Arm decides to keep watch at the door. He looks out and sees Birdie standing in the hallway. Arm can also smell something above the stale mustiness of the hallway.
Mira and the invisible Shadow remain crouched over the chest. Shadow pokes and prods at the chest but doesn't find anything else hidden there. The only special feature of the chest is the lead lining to defeat magical scrying. Mira - you don't need to use another spell. Shadow is still invisible from the first casting.
Mira also threatens the thief with being burnt. Whether it was the threats from Conner or her bluff, the thieves start talking.
The first one that Conner is standing over starts, "Necklace? Ahhh ... ya, we did take the necklace of Fendrik's. Uhh ... Fred there ..." he continues before being interrupted by the second thief that Kadaz is guarding.
"No! You were the one, Geordie! You told us about it, how it would be easy to take when Fendrik was drunk."
"Did not!", the first one replies before a growl from Conner gets them both back into line.
"Well, Fred there couldn't do the lock so we had to bust it. But, ya, Fendrik was drunk and we got in and out just fine."
"You want to know where the necklace is? Uhhh ... we don't have it, anymore. We ... uh ... fenced it. That money there was what we got for it. Look in Daim's pouch there," and you get the idea that he is referring to the unconcious one.
When someone moves to search the pouch of the unconcious thief, they find a crumpled bit of paper. After opening, the paper turns out to be an invitation to a gathering of a group called the "Bearers of the Chalice". The meeting is tonight at a home on Mansion Road.

Calling Mira over to him, Arm says, "I fear that our safety margin here is becoming shorter. I can detect an odd odor over here, can you smell it?". Whether or not she can, and if she tells him of what is written on the paper, he tells her that he has an idea of where this location is, and that, "we need to leave here soon and head over there. Take all of the money that we can find here, and if we can't buy it back, then we'll have to resort to other measures.". Afterwards, he casts another furtive glance into the hallway to see if he can find out anything further. He also glances down at Birdie to see if the dog notices anything. Mira d20+3=19 d20+6=12 Thursday February 2nd, 2006 10:15:02 AM
"You sure it's not Birdie?" Mira questions when the bard warns about the odour in the hallway. She nods, almost imperceptibly, when Shadow shares his information. She doesn't want to give away the invisible rogue's position.
"Bearer's of the Chalice! They have a house in the south part of Wealthy Quarter, almost into Noble Quarter, don't they?" (Knowledge Local=19) The sorcerer is pretty sure she is right, but she seeks confirmation from Kadaz.
"I have no stomache for murder," she says, addressing Conner. "Here's a rope*. Let's tie them up and leave as soon as possible." Mira will help truss up the bad guys. (Use Rope=12)

The Round Up (DM JohnP) Thursday February 2nd, 2006 9:19:35 PM
The party mulls over what the thief has told them.
Arm and Mira both recognize where the address of the house is. It's a nice neighbourhood and you wonder why someone from there would deal with these low-rent bigots and thieves.
The name Bearers of the Chalice is unfamiliar to the party, even to Mira and her excellent recall of local affairs. Maybe speaking to some of their contacts, either in the Guard or the Guild or wherever, might provide some information.
Birdie slinks into the room and Kadaz looks down at the dog. Birdie almost smirks at Kadaz and it's evident that the dog found something to roll in.
After Mira passes Conner the rope, the three thieves are tied up. The party makes ready to go.
The actual text of the invitation taken from the unconcious thief reads:
The Bearers of the Chalice
55 Mansion Road 8th hour after midday
Come to sip knowledge from the Chalice, Bear the Chalice, Return to the Chalice
When the party is ready to leave, they can choose to take the items that they've found or leave them for the thieves. They can also remove the thieves arms and armor if they so choose.
Conner Thursday February 2nd, 2006 10:06:57 PM
The tattooed fighter ties up the three thieves. "I'd leave town if I were you" he speaks softly to them as he works. "Once the guild finds out that you were still active things may get rough for you. Now where, is your boss, and what's the story on this invitation?"

Finishing Off (DM JohnP) Sunday February 5th, 2006 12:07:48 PM
The aprty completes their questioning of the three thieves.
The thief that Conner is standing over continues to speak.
"Ahh, ya ... maybe we will leave town. We wuz plannin' on that anyway. And we'd really appreciate it if you didn't mention it to the Guild ... we kinda did this independent, like. Commission job, as it were."
The other concious thief adds to the information. "The invite, we got that when we turned over the necklace. The woman who wanted the necklace, she gave us the invite with the money. Some mumbo jumbo about the Chalice, or whatnot. Heard others had invites, too, just show up at the door with invite is what we heard."
The two thieves are silent until Kadaz prods one of them with his boot. "Jones ... Fred and Geordie Jones. We're cousins, you see. Ahhh ... seeing that there's no password, are you gonna leave our weapons?"

"Commission job?" Conner parrots the thief. "Who commissioned you and what proof do you have of this?" Conner watches the thieves very carefully and tries to discern if they tell the truth [Sense Motive=16].
Kadaz d20-3=8 Sunday February 5th, 2006 3:13:47 PM
"Yes, take your weapons and run away. If I see you in Plateau City again I'll first break your legs and then tell the Guild where you're hiding. Understand?" Kadaz finishes off with a growl but isn't too convincing (intimidate 8)
After the thieves leave Kadaz looks at the remaining items. "I wonder what these potions are?"
Mira d20+3=18 d20+3=18 d20+2=5 Sunday February 5th, 2006 6:53:27 PM
"Salvage what you can," advises Mira, "but let's get out of here as soon as possible." The sorcerer has a funny feeling about the place, and the strange odor in the hallway is disconcerting.
"Collect the 3 potions, and the 4 pouches and the coin and gems," she continues, "leave the weapons, since we gave our word." Mira casts one last look around the room (Search=18, Spot=5) in case the group has missed anything.
Mira studies the chest, her brow furrowed, "Conner?" she asks, "do you think you can carry the chest?"
Mira will exit into the hallway, remembering the poor condition of the floor (Balance=18) she manages to keep her footing.
"Lets get out or here," she repeats. If no one has claimed the scrap of parchment with the 'invitation' on it, Mira will collect it, slipping it into her velvet pouch.

Overhearing the conversation, Arm realizes that there's very little possibility that they'll be able to buy back the necklace. Casting a glance over his shoulder to make sure that the others are preparing to leave, Arm again scans the hallway for trouble (balance=17, spot=16, listen=31 (nat. 20)).
Shadow d20+4=17 d20+3=21 d20+3=17 Monday February 6th, 2006 10:38:28 AM

Leaving the Apartment (DM JohnP) Monday February 6th, 2006 9:27:41 PM
The party prepares to leave the apartment. Conner asks a final question of thieves concerning who hired them. The thief that he is standing over replies, "Ilonia. Ilonia something or other, some noble. Didn't give us her last name but her servant called her Lady Ilonia." From what the fighter can tell from the back of the thief'd head, he was telling the truth.
Kadaz wants to run the thieves off but then he is reminded that they are tied up.
Mira directs the two fighters to help gather the items that have been defaulted. That's 3 potions, the coins and the chest. Conner finds that the chest is deceptively heavy, weighing almost double what it should (45 lbs).
Arm and Shadow lead the way out of the apartment. Kadaz and Conner look back and see that the thieves aren't testing the ropes binding them yet.
Once the party gets outside into the street, the look around. Despite the short period of violence inside the apartment, everyone out here is going about their business as if nothing had happened.
The party is faced with some dilemnas. They've found out what happened to Fendrik Vaeder's necklance, but they doubt that he'll be happy to get this news. If they want to try to retrieve the necklace, they'll have to speak to this Lady Ilonia. The invitation from the "Bearers of Chalice" might be a way of getting to see the woman. Of course, going to a meeting of an unknown group could be a risky proposition.
They could also turn the thieves in to either their friends in the Plateau City Defense League or to the Thieves' Guild, or both.
They could go into a branch of the Catacombs to sell or identify the items that they've acquired.
Either way, they've got until nightfall if they want to attend the meeting of the "Bearers of the Chalice".
Mira d20+8=24 Monday February 6th, 2006 11:19:50 PM
"Lets bring this stuff back to the apartment. We can have a bite to eat and figure out what to do next, okay?"
Mira waits for Conner to exit with the chest. "Stay in the middle," she counsels the fighter, "lest someone get curious about the chest." The sorcerer will walk in front of or beside the tatooed man in order to shielf him from the view of any onlookers.
If it is safe to discuss matters along the way (no obvious listeners), Mira will suggest they call on this Lady Ilonia and the Bearer's of the Chalice. "Sounds kind of creepy, doesn't it?" she asks the others.

Sheathing his weapon, the fighter approaches the decptively heavy chest. Bending from the knees, he performs a proper lift (Strength Check=24, nat. 20) wrapping his arms around the strong box. "You sure it's empty?" he mutters to the party rogue. "No hidden treasure in secret compartments? Seems pretty heavy for such a little box."
Arm Tuesday February 7th, 2006 5:55:19 AM
Once outside, Arm sheathes his sword and agrees with Mira, "I think it best that we go back to the apartment first. I ALSO think that we may want to see if we can enlist the aid of our previous employers. You still have the scrolls they gave you, right?".
Shadow Tuesday February 7th, 2006 10:13:39 AM
Shadow is happy that the group is heading back to the apartment.
Once back, Shadow will say, "I am open for whatever you guys want to do, but I am going to the guild to report those three. That will ensure that they leave the city."
With that Shadow will leave to go and report the three to the Guild. He will do it as quickly as possible and then return to the apartment.
Kadaz Tuesday February 7th, 2006 8:48:04 PM
Kadaz look around at the normalacy outside of the apartments. He looks up and down the street wondering what odd things are going on in those buildings.
"Yes, let's go home and talk this over. Figure out who is going to infiltrate this group."
Back to the Apartment (DM JohnP) Tuesday February 7th, 2006 9:48:18 PM
The party walks down the alley onto Gauntlet Street before making their way back to the apartment. There's no sign on the street of either the Plateau City Defense League or anything else unusual. Before they enter the apartment, Shadow makes his leave.
Inside, the remaining four members debate what to do. Mira wracks her brain and remembers that a cup or chalice symbolizes many different things. Most commonly, it has religious meanings since some groups use a chalice or goblet in their services. Other spells or rituals could be performed using wine or another liquid in a goblet. Because of that, a chalice is sometimes considered to represent knowledge. And other groups believe that it symbolizes death.
Arm suggests contacting the groups previous employer, the Griffon Road Explorer's Guild. Kadaz suggests that they need to determine which of them will go to the meeting.
It's a lot to do, before nightfall. You could go in blind or try to learn as much as possible before one or more of the party goes to the meeting.
========================================
Shadow goes to the local headquarters of the Guild. After making the proper sequence of knocks, he is admitted to the building. Inside, like before, there are several men and women waiting. When Shadow asks to speak to the local boss, he is ushered into a inner room after waiting for a couple minutes.
After delivering his news, the local boss thanks Shadow for the information. "We'll get on it ... the word came down, and that's what will be. Can't have people not following orders."
Mira Wednesday February 8th, 2006 1:05:24 AM
Mira removes her little round spectacles and polishes the lenses with the edge of her tunic. "Yeah, I've still got the scrolls, Arm, but don't 'cha think we can do this job ourselves?" The sorcerer replaces her glasses, carefully hooking them around her ears. "Besides," she continues, "we know where Fendrik's necklace is likely to be now, right?"
Mira will suggest that the party tries to find out a little more about this group called the Bearer's of the Chalice so they can better play the role of 'invited guests'. "Where's the closest tavern to Mansion Road?" she asks.
Conner d20+1=12 Wednesday February 8th, 2006 1:08:51 AM
Conner puts the chest on the table and studies it, not really expecting to solve any of it's mysteries. (Search=12)
He kind of tunes Mira out, until she says something about a tavern.
Arm Wednesday February 8th, 2006 5:54:18 AM
Arm grimaces a bit at Mira and says, "What I am concerned with is that we may end up being outnumbered...we know what our strength is but we don't know what THEIRS is. We can end up being outmatched by 5 or even 10 to one, and I figured the more people we have on our side the better. However, what the group decides, I will go along with.".
OOC: Carla, don't forget that we're 3 people down at the moment... ;)
Kadaz Wednesday February 8th, 2006 6:18:55 AM
Kadaz thinks about what is going on. "If the leader of this chalice group is willing to hire thugs to steal jewelery I doubt the group itself is up to anything good. I will go contact what friends I have left in the Guard and ask about a Lady Ilonia on Mansion Road. I'll be back in a few hours. Then this evening I suggest we send Mira and Conner in with the invitation, with the rest of us just outside."
He pauses to think about the realities of life here in Plateau City. "If we do get involved in trouble tonight remember that the Guard is more likely to believe someone living in a nice home over a bunch of adventurers like ourselves. Especially if someone in the house gets hurt."
