The group discusses how to enter the outbuilding and come up with a game plan. Angus suggests that Lang quickly run back and check on the animals and see if he can convince them to move onto the plantation grounds. Lang figures he has a few minutes to do this as Xenia set's up her oil flasks.
Lang and Ashlan (after being healed by Belkior) run back to the rear gate of the plantation and find the horse and Sunshine where they left them. Sunshine can barely contain his excitement at seeing Lang and practically shakes himself silly. The horse looks bored and quite content, standing peacefully in the sun. That is until Lang tries to move him through the gate. No matter what Lang does, the horse will not enter the plantation. Lang finds a nearby tree and loosely ties the horse to it after disconnecting him from the cart. Sunshine, on the other hand, after some coaxing by Lang, does enter the plantation and follows Lang and Ashlan as they make their way back to the rest of the Shields. Sunshine is obviously not happy as he keeps his nose low to the ground and his tail somewhat between his legs.
OOC - Lang and Ashlan go and come back without any trouble. They do not see any undead or any sign of undead on the trip. The trip takes about 10 minutes total.
The 3 make it back to the group and Lang reports in. "Angus, I could not convince the horse to move inside the compound. I disconnected him from the cart and loosely tied him to a tree. He should easily be able to break free and run away if needed and there is a good chance he will still be there when we get back if he is not scared away."
While Ashlan and Lang are away the main group prepares to enter the building. Xenia quietly moves up in front of the doors and places here 3 oil flasks. Just as quietly she moves back and joins the group. This takes her about 4-5 minutes as she takes her time and moves quietly. While the group waits for Lang and Ashlan to return they do not see anything out of the ordinary. Nothing stirs from any of the buildings. No sound, nothing. As a matter of fact it dawns on all of them that the normal outdoor animal and noise sounds appear to be missing. It is eerily quiet.
Finally, the group is back to its full capacity. Syr takes action into his own hands and moves up to the doors of the barn. The rest of the Shields fan out according to Angus's orders. With a look back at the group, Syr gives a slight tug on the door trying to open it. It starts to open, about an inch or two, but resists his pull and closes again with a faint, metallic clatter. All can see that the door appears to be stuck on something rather than locked. Syr digs his feet into the ground and gives a mighty heave with all his strength (strength check 4 without bonuses). Once again whatever is keeping the door from opening proves too much for Syr as he rattles the door even louder trying to get it open. A little mad, Syr spits in his hands and practically rips the door off its hinges with his next jerk on the door (str 13). As it opens, what appears to be some farm tool breaks in half and falls to the ground. It looks like it was hung up on the door and a piece of metal on the doorframe. Intentional or not, it proved to be almost too much for the mighty monk.
The interior of the building is rather dark. It takes a few moments for your eyes to adjust to see inside. When your eyes do adjust you can see about 15 or so feet into the building. Just on the outskirts of your vision you can see a body lying on the ground. Hanging by a rope, above the body on the ground, is another body. It sways slightly in the light breeze that is entering the barn now that the doors are open. The rest of the building is in darkness and no other interior features are visible.
Marching order, straight back from the doors into the old road area: Syr standing by the door (within 5' of the opening). Lang, Ashlan and Famina standing 5 or so feet from Syr. Wynn and Xenia 5' farther back. And last Angus, Belkior and Sunshine about another 5 feet back.
OOC - All other checks or actions either failed or produced nothing of interest.
OOC - Syr took a little liberty on what you would do with the stuck door. If this was too much please let me know.
OOC -- please post HP's, AC's and what you have in your hands in your next post. Also please roll 1 spot check each.
Angus - Mage Armor HP 28 AC 14 (-1CHa) Wednesday January 18th, 2006 9:55:22 AM
Angus is a bit tense as everything is prepared and comments to Famina. "I would not worry about the vampire leaving as they are strong, smart undead. I would worry about the vampire comming up with a plan to kill us all."
Angus watches Xenia prepare and comments. "I like it, but lets not burn the barn down unless we have to. I may be better to cover our escape."
Angus grimaces as Sry has trouble with the door and whispers "There goes surprise."
Once the doors are open and the bodies visible Angus speaks quickly after casting a light spell into the barn at 15 feet height. "Time to press. Lets watch for traps. Xenia see what you can see. Then lets move in carefully people by twos. Lang and Ashlan then Syr and Famina and then Xenia and Wynn. Belkior and I will follow. Weapons ready, lets go."

Lang and Sunshine take a minute to get reacquianted and trot back to the barn, being mindfull of the missing ghasts. (spot 13, listen 22).
After one final nuzzle with Sunshine, Lang pulls his two magic short sword and prepares to enter the barn with Ashlan and Sunshine. "Heel Sunshine." (spot 18, listen 7, animal handle 25)
If Xenia give the ok, Lang will proced toward the bodies and poke at them with his swords.
Xenia (AC20, HP42/42) d20+18=32 d20+13=23 d20+4=11 Wednesday January 18th, 2006 10:47:32 AM "'Sides," Xenia adds to Angus' comment in a terse whisper, "what we gonna do? Regrow the grass? If they're smart, Fammie, they'll know someone was here, and they'll know the ghoulies are missing. If they're not smart, we don't have anything to worry about."
The rogue peers into the darkness of the barn building. Her elven eyesight drinks in any light available.
"Hang on a sec. Anyway, anyone have a sunrod? Like Angus said, I don't wanna burn the place down. Don't think this is gonna light anything up. But probs a sunrod would be better."
She tucks the sling into her belt and draws a torch. Kneeling, she takes out a flint and steel, igniting the head. Flint and steel go back into her pouch.
"Heads up, guys." Drawing back a thin and graceful arm, the dark rogue throws the burning torch to the demarcation of darkness.
Drawing her sling, she waits for a reaction, or the word to move in.
Rolls and Actions Spot 32 Listen 23 To Hit a square AC11 vs DC5 (15 feet in, Xenia is 20 feet from door, so -6 range penalty for 35 feet)
Note I'm assuming we're not in combat rounds and that I have time to do this. Otherwise, consider the torch throw undone and the sling and alchemist fire in her hands. If successful, that should illuminate 20 more feet into the barn. 40 more feet for those with Low Light vision.
Belkior (AC 22; HP 48) d20+5=24 Wednesday January 18th, 2006 2:04:03 PM
The halfling cleric blinks in the bright sunlight, trying to peer into the barn.
The light from Xenia's thrown torch illuminates the interior. In it's flickering light, Belkior can see most of the interior. Spot = 24
Nervously, Belkior fingers his mace at his side. The enclosed space of the barn could be a good hiding spot for more undead. And those bodies ... could be anything, really.
"Ready when you are, Angus," Belkior whispers to his companion. "When we get inside, I should probably check those bodies."
Ashlan Sinclair-AC:19-HP:63 d20+2=21 Wednesday January 18th, 2006 6:34:14 PM
Ashlan glances to the bodies when the doors are open and his eyes adjust to the light and sighs abit as he shakes his head, "Seems like alot of dead things around here. Hopefully nothing nasty in here."
Ashlan smiles abit to Lang and shrugs as he begins to move in when everything is set anyway, glancing around more as he does.
(spot:21)
Syr (AC 19/18 HP 68 dex -1) d20+8=17 Wednesday January 18th, 2006 6:37:24 PM
Copying the sorceror's grimace, the elf shrugs his shoulders in apology. In a normal voice, "Must be too much shovel work wore me out. Hey guys, why are we whispering? As Angus said, I've done a pretty poor job of surpising anyone."
Being the closest with elven vision, he tries to decern any further details in the barn before proceeding. (spot 17) Moving to the side slightly, he allows Ashlan and Lang to move around him and pairs up with Famina. Taking a look at Sunshine, he wonders how the dog is reacting to the dead bodies.
Wynn Brightsong d20+6=24 d20+2=4 Wednesday January 18th, 2006 8:55:18 PM
The bard steps carefully into the barn, casting his eyes to the door and the implement that had jammed it shut. Then his eyes turn to the bodies. "I wonder if they tried to jam the door to save themselves from whatever was out there" he comments to Xenia. "Doesn't look like it worked." Wynn's mouth is suddenly dry and he works his cheeks trying to encourage the flow of saliva. [Spot=24, Listen=4]
ADM Matt Wednesday January 18th, 2006 10:29:41 PM
The group views the scene before them, a little saddened and a little horrified. They all strain to see more of the shadows of the interior of the barn. All the Shields, but Angus, can see that the 2 bodies are dressed in fine clothes, although they appear to be old and worn down or possibly they were tattered by claws.
Angus and Xenia are the first to react to try and get more light into the barn. One does it with magic the other with a more conventional mean, a lit torch. Angus casts his light spell onto a sling stone and tosses into the opening. Xenia, meanwhile, tosses in her lit torch. Both land between the door opening and the 2 bodies. The light from the magic spell overpowers the lit torch and provides most of the newly illuminated area within the building.
All can now see the 2 bodies quite clearly. They are as you thought, dressed in nice clothes that have seen better days. No blood or apparent wounds are visible. Both bodies are mostly facing in your direction, though the one body does rock a little bit in the breeze. The light also reveals your typical barn. It has a corridor down the middle with stalls on either side. The corridor and double door are the same width about 10 feet. The stalls on either side look to be about 10 feet deep. It looks like the barn has a second level of some sort, but the angle through the door and the lack of light penetrating that high keep most of it out of view (looks to be about 30 feet tall). The back part of the barn also fades into darkness and the far wall cannot be seen.
As before Syr broke the silence by forcing the door open, the quiet and stillness returns.
With a quick nod towards Angus, Ashlan and Lang approach the barn door opening. The rest of the group falls in behind them per Angus's instructions. The 2 reach the opening of the barn, and Ashlan glances down and sees it was just a plain farm rake keeping the door closed.
Ashlan and Lang take one step into the building and see the eyes on both of the bodies open. Both are struck by the intensity of the gaze coming from the eyes. They struggle as the power of the gaze saps their will and tries to control their minds.
OOC - Ashlan and Lang each make 1 will save DC 14. Nobody else is aware of what is going on at this point. OOC - Spot check 30 by rest of group to see the eyes open. OOC - We are in combat please post accordingly.
Marching order from the door opening: Lang & Ashlan in the opening. Famina & Syr 5' back. Wynn and Xenia 5' farther back. Angus & Belkior about another 5 feet back. Sunshine 15 feet from the back of the group.
ADM Matt C. (cont.) Wednesday January 18th, 2006 11:03:15 PM
Those characters with low light vision can dimly see the back wall of the barn. Nothing in the 10' wide corridor gives any concern for alarm. The view up is not as clear due to the angle looking through the door. The same characters can see a small portion of the roof and the bottom of the second level.
Angus - Mage Armor - HP 28 - AC 14 (-1Cha) d20+2=14 Thursday January 19th, 2006 8:48:56 AM
Angus waits for the group to move forward and is only keeping one eye on the interior of the barn (spot 14) and the other on Sunshine as he is not by his masters side. "Whats up boy?"
Angus whispers to those in front of him "Any traps or anything interesting?"
Lang d20+3=10 Thursday January 19th, 2006 9:13:01 AM
Lang takes a step into the barn and sees the hanging body up close and then notices those piercing willful eyes (will save fail 10) and his sword arms drop from their ready position down to his waist.
What happens next?
Xenia (AC20, HP42/42) d20+18=32 d20+13=33 d20+6=11 2d6(3+1)=4 Thursday January 19th, 2006 10:09:20 AM "I wanna take a look at that set up on the door when we get a chance," Xenia whispers in reply to Wynn. "Give a look see whether it was set up on purpose or not."
"THEY MOVED! THEIR EYES OPENED!" The vigilant rogue sounds the warning. They sure looked dead. This can't be good. The rogue's eyes flick to the things that strike her as wrong. The rope. If it's not dead, why would it tie itself up with a rope? It must be holding onto it somehow.
She grabs one of the weakest beads from the Necklace of Fireballs.
"IN COMING!" Xenia shouts, and throws the bead to a spot just beyond the bodies and dead center of the aisle.
Rolls and Actions Spot 32 Listen 33 (Nat 20) Hit Square AC11 vs DC5 (30 to 35 feet, -6 range penalty) Damage 4hp
Fireball, in the center of the aisle and just beyond 20 feet into the barn should miss both the two side walls, Ashlan and Lang, and hopefully the back wall too. It should catch the two bodies. But more important, it should catch the rope that one of the bodies is hanging from. I think 4hp is enough to Sunder the rope and bring the body down for whatever damage it would take from a fall. I think it should also catch anything in the upper level within a smaller radius.
Famina (AC 21, hp 68/78) Thursday January 19th, 2006 1:29:31 PM
There really isn't much of a view for her, what with her silver helmet blocking most of her view, and the farm being very dark besides. She mumbles to herself, "I have the worst vision in the dark..." She'd always blamed it on how light and clear her eyes were, almost white instead of blue. Still, she's ready. Her sword and shield out(And the vial of magic weapon clenched in her shield arm's fist), she expects at any moment more ghasts to pop out. Then Xenia gives her shout. This time, Famina is ready for a battle with the undead. The shield strapped to her arm allows her to use her hand to spread the vial over her weapon. Now, she's sure she can kill these things... (Standard action) Already in her heart, Famina feels the pulse of battle preparing. She crouches slightly, ready to spring in as soon as the others move out of the way.

Ashlan feels the grip of the undead in his mind and fights with all his power to resist it and does successfully. He shouts a warning to the rest of the Shields.
Lang, on the other hand, is not so fortunate. The creature's will is too much for Lang and he succumbs to its power. Lang's face goes blank and he tilts his head slightly as if listening to someone.
I am going to break the next round down into 2 parts. A standard or move action followed by the same or completion of a full round activity.

First Action:
The shouts of warning from Xenia and Ashlan stir the group into action as the two seemingly dead people launch a mind attack against two of the Shields. Ashlan and Syr quickly rush in as Xenia tosses a fireball bead at the 2 creatures. The creature on the ground rises to meet the oncoming shields. The creature hanging by the rope reaches up to his neck, gives a sharp tug and lightly falls to the ground next to his companion, also waiting for the oncoming Shields (only about 5' from the ground so no damage).
The fireball explodes for 4 points of damage, catching the 2 undead, Syr and Ashlan in its blast. Syr nimbly avoids the damage, as does one of the creatures (Reflex 12 & 21 vs. save DC of 14).
OOC -- Ashlan please make a reflex save.
The remaining party members take a different approach. Famina opens and applies her Magic Weapon Oil to her sword. Belkior casts the spell Prayer to aid his fellow Shields. Wynn waits for the fireball to explode. Angus just waits.
Lang, on the other hand, slams the barn doors closed will a flick of his powerful arms. He turns around to face the Shields that are outside, planting himself squarely in front of the barn doors. He is a menacing figure at 7' plus tall with his 2 short swords in his hands. He gets even more threatening as he barks a command to his faithful companion.
"Sunshine heel!"
Another short sentence comes out of his mouth that confirms with everyone that he is not himself.
"You cannot enter."
Just before Lang shut the doors, both Xenia and Belkior noticed a flash of light in the back of the barn. It appeared to have originated from near the ceiling, flashing down to the floor. It almost looked as if someone had opened some curtains.
Second Action:
Syr swings his meaty fist at Vampire Spawn #1, and lands a solid blow for 7+1=8 (Prayer) points of damage. Just as quickly as the damage is done most of it is undone as it heals right before his eyes (damage reduction 5/silver). The Spawn strikes back hitting AC 22-1=21 for 5-1=4 points of damage (Syr please make a Fort DC 14 --1=13 save; if fail gain 1 negative level; see below for details on a negative level).
Ashlan also wields his weapon with effectiveness at Vampire Spawn #2, just hitting the undead with help from Belkior. He also notices that his weapon did not damage the creature as much as he thought (damage 11+1-5=7). The undead swings back at Ashlan and once again Belkior comes to the rescue and the creature misses (hit AC 19-1=18).
Both Syr and Ashlan hear a sound behind them they wish they didn't, the sound of feet hitting the ground as 2 creatures jump to the floor. Tightening their back muscles they wait for the blows that will surely come. You are both now flanked.
Vampire Spawn #3 attacks Syr hitting AC 13+2-1=14 and misses. Vampire Spawn #4 attacks Ashlan hitting AC 15+2-1=16 and misses.
Meanwhile outside Wynn and Famina move to enter the barn and are stalled by the presence of Lang in the way and the doors being closed. Lang does not swing at them, but growls and repeats his message a little louder.
"You cannot enter!"
Belkior draws a weapon and Xenia and Angus watch the proceedings from a safer distance.
Sunshine runs over and takes position next to Lang. He senses his master's anger towards Wynn and Famina and growls a protective warning at them.
Marching Order Syr and Famina inside the barn with 4 Vampire Spawn. Lang & Sunshine standing in front of the closed barn doors. Wynn and Famina 5' from them. Xenia, Belkior and Angus 5' from them and about 10' from Lang and Sunshine.

Things move fast. Really fast.
"Gotta talk to them about running in and hitting things, Angus," Xenia shoots to the sorcerer. "This is the second time. And it's gonna get them killed."
The dark rogue begins to back away.
"Hit the door with a lightning bolt, Angus!" The rogue's shout is both suggestion and warning. "Get clear! We gotta take the door down! It's you or me, Angus." And she stands ready to rip the most powerful bead from the necklace.
Wynn (AC 19, 52 HP, +1 Prayer) d20+6=17 d20+8=27 Thursday January 19th, 2006 11:37:47 PM

"What enchantment is this?" he exclaims.
Unwilling to bear arms against his friend, the bard seeks to shake Lang out of his trance with a battle song from their days in the Floating City. His voice rings true and clear, loud enough to be heard by all. [Perform=27 - actually 28, forgot the +1 for prayer]

Angus barks "Once the Door is open, Famina and Wynn force a path open so Syr and Ashlan our overzelous friends can escape. Belkior, you and I have Lang."
Angus thinks to himself that pressing may not have been the best course of action, but it is water under the bridge now.
Belkior (AC 22; HP 48) 4d8(3+6+7+3)=19 Friday January 20th, 2006 3:04:53 PM
The halfling cleric realizes now what has happened inside the barn. After the Lightning Bolt and other magic, he tries to see inside the barn where the vampire spawn are lurking.
If he can see enough to have Line of Effect, Belkior will call down the holy fury of Alemi upon the foul undead. He intones a prayer and casts Holy SMite upon them, positioned so as to catch most of them in the blast and avoiding his companions inside the barn. Holy Smite - 19 damage and Blind for one round to evil creatures, DC 18 Will save for half damage and no blindness. If Ashlan or Syr are neutral, they take half damage and save for quarter.
If he cannot see inside, Belkior will opt to protect his companions. He invokes a protective ward around Famina, then slaps her on the back.
"Get in there! You're protected from the vampires' worst effects!" Death Ward - immune to death spells, magical death effects, energy drain and negative energy effects

Wynn sees the lightening bolt just in time and manages to avoid the worst of it. His sword ready, the bard continues his attempt to shake Lang from the mental grip of the undead.
'Cross the deep-gullied vale, up the mountain's steep side, Through the rough foaming river's impetuous tide, O'er the fortified redoubt, close wedged in array, Regardless of safety they follow their prey.
The alarm of the drum and the giant's loud roar, The dragon's hot breath but inflames them the more. No dangers dismay, for they fear no control, But glory and hope inspires every soul.
Ashlan whispers a thanks to Belkior for his help with the spells and such and nods as he speaks to Syr, "I'm with you Syr, lets show these undead skum the power of two battle hardened veterans." He moves in and swings hard at the same vampire spawn that Syr attacks, slashing hard both times with his magical mithril longsword and slashing once with his mithril kukri.

(Strangely, the DM's post says I'm both inside the barn and outside the barn. But I think that's a type, I'm actually outside still.) (Reflex roll accidentally erased: Got a 7. Failed my reflex save, took full damage. -3 from DR tho.) Combat begins and Famina is ready... Almost. The two other fighters get ahead, but one is strangely blocking them. At first, she's uncertain, is it some sort of battle tactic. But one glance at her companions convinces her it must be an enchantment of some kind.
(Seems like there's several sorts of situations going on at once... I see 3) Possibility One and Two: (The door manages to be blasted open.) Famina sees beyond the tall bugbear's shoulder the shadows moving, illuminated by her companions spells. And that's where she has to be. She moves right into the bugbear's face, ignoring him casually, letting him hit her, as she scoots right past him. If he's in the way, then, that means something else... If there's no other recourse, she has to get him outta the way. She darts forward, and at the last second goes low, and shoves her shield high, forcing him off his feet and hopefully into the room beyond. (Bull Rush attempt DC 29 on him) Possibility Two (same situation as above): If she can get by him without doing this, she darts beside him through the door. (Sprint Attack and Mobility should provide some protection or allow some of that, I think) She darts into attack range and lets the battle take her over completely. (Entering Rage) She ends her move and attacks a vampire on the edge, probably the one on Syr's side. (#4) (Hits AC 26, does 6+4+2+1+1+1=15 damage) She slashes deeply with her magically oiled, but quite plain otherwise blade. Possibility Two: (Xenia does not manage to open the door with her spell, so Belkior enchants Famina) Seeing that the door is still standing, there's no real way in the house... Except to continue to hammer the door. Taking a step forward and just barely staying outta reach of the burly bugbear, she takes a swing at the door with her sword, hacking at it like a club, hoping to chop down the remainder. (AC 32, does only 1+4+1+1+1=8 damage, magical weapon)

OOC -- I am making the assumption that everyone has included the effects of the Prayer spell in their rolls.
Inside the barn (Syr, Ashlan & 4 Vampire Spawn):
Syr and Ashlan both realize that they have fallen into a trap. The situation does not look good. Not only are there 2 undead in front of them, but 2 more have join the battle behind them, cutting off their retreat. Compounding their dire position, they hear the barn doors slam shut behind them and a series of explosions rock the door, but do not burst it open. They are alone in the barn, who knows what else will drop in on them. Thank goodness there is light from Angus's light spell. Syr realizes they must reduce the amount of attackers quickly or be overwhelmed.
Syr attacks VS #1 with a flurry or arms and legs damaging it 2 times for a total of 14 after damage reduction. Ashlan heeds Syr's battle wisdom and stabs at VS #1 and strikes it with his longsword. Both he and Syr watch in amazement as the VS becomes gaseous and starts to drift upward. Ashlan sticks his Kukri into the now gaseous form and realizes he cannot damage it when it is in this form.
OOC -- Undead do not take extra damage from critical hits.
Outside the barn (Lang, Sunshine, Wynn, Famina, Xenia, Belkior and Angus):
The group outside the barn tries desperately to enter the barn through the closed barn doors. Angus blasts it with a lightning bolt and Xenia hits it with a fireball bead (doors are roughly 10' high so Lang, Sunshine and the oil flasks will get caught in the blast). The blast is not strong enough to do any structural damage to the door (same rules apply as for lightning bolt), but it does start the doors on fire. It also forces Lang and Sunshine to vacate their position in front of the doors as the oil flasks erupt and the grassy area in front of the doors goes up in flames (reflex saves 20 & 19 for Lang & Sunshine). Wynn, hoping to break the enchantment on Lang, starts singing. Unfortunately it does not appear to have any effect on Lang. Belkior, hoping they can get inside quickly, enchants Famina with the spell Death Ward. Frustration mounts on Famina as she sees the barn doors still closed, and a blaze blocking the way to the doors.
OOC -- Famina, damage reduction only applies to physical/combat attacks, not spells.

Inside the barn:
The 3 remaining Vampire Spawn continue their assault on Syr and Ashlan.
Vampire Spawn #2 takes a 5 foot step back from Ashlan and looks him directly in the eyes. Ashlan feels the powerful will of the undead invade his brain once again, trying to get him to stop fighting.
OOC - Ashlan, Will save DC 14 or be Dominated with the command to stop fighting.
Both Ashlan and Syr feel the remaining 2 Vampire Spawn strike their backs (-1 for Prayer and no flanking now).
Ashlan hit AC 15 - Miss. Syr hit AC 22 (reduce in above roll for Prayer); damage 4 (reduced 1 for Prayer).
OOC - Syr please make a Fort save DC 14; if fail gain 1 negative level.
Outside the barn:
The group outside watches as the small inferno rages on in front of them, effectively keeping them from the barn doors. The charred, cracked but still closed barn doors taunts them unmercifully through the flames and smoke.
Lang looks at the fire and the doors and ignores the group. He still has that same expressionless look on his face, although his fur is somewhat singed now. Sunshine remains at this side.

Angus thinks to himself, must free Lang, and he casts a targeted dispel magic on the Bugbear (natural 20!!!)and he watches his reactions (sense motive 13). Angus call out to the Shields outside "Watch Lang, I MAY have freed him. If no one can get in the barn immediately, I will blast it again, so watch out."

"That's it!" With a high-pitched undulating yell, like that of an angry cat, Famina drops her shoulders, ignores the presence of Lang, and barrels into the door. (Raging!, rolled a DC 25 Strength Check to smash the door open. I think that does it; I looked up doors in the SRD and saw that plain ones have a break DC of 13/15, good ones 16/18, and strong ones 20/25 (stuck/locked). Woohooo!) She is heedless of the fire letting it flicker at her. Swiftly she steps through the fires, ignoring them if they ignite upon her (which is possible and up to the DM) and instead just moves right up to one of the undead. (But that's all, because the break action was her standard action, and the move is the rest of her turn)

The roar of the conflagration fills the ears of the dark half-elven rogue. But through the smoke and fire, she spies the two figures on top of the roof.
"Beware above!" she sounds the warning before her hand moves to one of the medium-sized beads on her necklace. Then she stops. They'd have to get down from there first before they could do anything. And, to her eye, that's some 20 or 30 feet up.
"Belkie!" Xenia shouts over the sound of the crackling flames. She points to the two Ghasts on the roof. "There must be an entrance up there somewhere. I saw a light just before the front doors closed. Be ready."
A brief whirring cuts through the sound of crackling fire, as the rogue palms a normal sling bullet and sends it streaking toward one of the slightly burnt Ghast above.

Inside the Barn (Syr, Ashlan & 3 active Vampire Spawn):
Syr hears the voice of Angus from outside the barn letting them know that help is on the way. He strikes with renewed vigor at the Vampire Spawn in front of him and urges Ashlan to keep the pressure on (total damage 17 after damage reduction). Syr takes a quick glance towards Ashlan when he doesn't see the man's weapons strike out and is dismayed to see his new friend standing there with his arms at his sides and a vacant look on his face. The gaseous form VS is now out of sight up in the second level.
Outside the Barn (Lang, Sunshine, Wynn, Famina, Xenia, Belkior and Angus):
Xenia and Belkior both see the 2 Ghast peering down at the group from on top of the barn. Both are satisfied with solid hits from their weapons to the singed Ghast and ecstatic when the Ghast rolls off the roof and makes a loud thump in the grass. Both see the other Ghast retreat from view. Belkior moves back to stand near Angus, who is disappointed that his powerful Dispel Magic spell did not release Lang from his enchantment. Wynn, Lang and Sunshine move away from the doorway as it is bombarded multiple different ways. Famina takes advantage of the clear path to the doorway and rushes through the flames, lowers her shoulder and smashes into the barn doors. She shatters one of the doors from it hinges and ends up in the barn facing the backs of 2 creatures in disheveled clothing (take 3 fire damage). Lang appears to go through an internal struggle (failed Will save) and moves back in front of the now open doorway, and repeats his do not enter message to the remaining Shield members (4 fire damage). Sunshine remains where he is outside of the fire area.

Vampire Spawn #2 then moves towards a stall and climbs into it and then up the wall to the second level (Syr may make an AoO before it is up to the second level; Ashlan you are to far away to get an AoO on the retreating VS if you make your save).
Vampire Spawn #3 & #4 face Famina and both gaze directly into her eyes. She feels the crushing power of 2 of the Undead's minds hit her at once. She feels them compelling her to do something she does not want to do.

While the three vampire spawn are still within sight, the halfling cleric calls down the holy smiting wrath of Alemi on these foul creatures.
Belkior shapes his hands into the symbol of Alemi and mutters a prayer that will cast Holy Smite. He requests that the spell be centred upon the undead visible inside the barn. Holy Smite = 21 hitpoints damage to evil creatures, 10 hitpoints to neutral - Will DC 18 to take half damage. Spell is centred on the three undead visible, whatever height they are above floor. If they are out of sight, centre the spell high enough above the floor to catch anything on the second level.
"We've got to destroy the undead ... Lang should be okay then!"

(Sorry, I send in my char sheet to what address again?)
Pure loss in the rage, the voice of a comrade pushing her on, and a god's will itself provoke her beyond any stage she can be stopped by mere charms. It's like a brick wall to the vampires, and a second later, she attacks them with incredible power. (First swing, AC20 (+7 BA +4 Str +2 rage +1 prayer +1 song +1 weapon), 11 damage if that hits) But now the monsters rush up to the second floor. Famina, in a rush to get them, looks around for any stairs. If there is any route to get to them, she will rush up it. But it is also likely that there is no route up to the second floor. If that is the case, she rushes forward underneath them and when underneath, takes a jumping swing at one!
(Jump of 18, as my armor negates much of my strength bonus) (Whether I run up stairs to engage one, or jump and swing, I hit AC 27 and did 15 damage)

"Angus," the sling keeps turning, "I got a rope and grappling hook. We can go up from the outside. There's got to be a door there somewhere. Or, we can go up from the inside." She shakes her head as she scans the area.
"But, even after we get up there, I don't know what we're going to do. How do you kill these things? We don't got much daylight left."

"Xenia's right, Angus. Probably the vampires have some kind of shelter, maybe their coffins, inside the barn. Maybe up above where we're seeing them go."
Pointing into the barn, Belkior continues.
"We have to get in there quick! An hour at most, at least before the sun goes down. Get in there, find what they're sheltering in and drag them out into the sun while they're still helpless."
Speaking softly, Belkior approaches Lang. "Lang, can we enter now? What will you do if we try to enter?"
"Remember all those times that I've healed you and Sunshine? Patched you and got you healthy? How all of us have worked together to protect the orphans? That's why we're here, to ensure that this place will be safe for them."
All the while, Belkior is edging closer to the entrance. He's trying to see if his calm words are enough to sway Lang. Failing that, hopefully Lang will resist if he is driven to attack Belkior. Or, that Belkior's armor will be enough to protect him. Expecting an attack, the little healer will hunch his shoulders.

End CR#5:
Approximate marching order: Famina is raging and pacing inside the barn. She is waiting for one of the undead to make the mistake of showing itself so she can jump up and stab it. She moves all around in the lighted area, but is not able to attack anything (spot check DC 10 to see a ladder to the second level on the back wall of the barn).
Wynn is also in the barn. He is horrified by Ashlan's attack on Syr and wonders if Ashlan really is a bad guy. He launches his own attack against Ashlan, hitting Ashlan with a dagger for 7 points of damage (Wynn may make a spot check DC 20 to see a ladder on the back wall of the barn).
Ashlan is still dominated and still attacking Syr. He gets an AoO in on Syr before Syr moves out of range (miss with first roll of 17). Ashlan follows Syr and attempts to get past Lang, but is thwarted by Lang's bulk standing in the doorway (took your second roll of a base 6 to muscle/bull rush past Lang and you failed). Ashlan barely flinches when the dagger strikes him. He is so focused on getting to Syr. He re-groups and tries to get past Lang (Ashlan pick tumble, bull rush or overrun to get past Lang; whichever is your best method; Lang will take 10 for being in the doorway but will not try to stop you with his strength).
Syr runs as fast as he can away from Ashlan after Ashlan's brutal surprise attack against him. He is barely able to tumble past Lang, bounces off Lang's body and lands at Belkior's feet. With a groan he asks for some of Belkior's healing magic and complains about the injustice of it all.
Lang is still dominated and standing in the doorway. He is happy to see Syr leave the barn as it fits the instructions that were given to him. Lang feels the presence of Ashlan behind him trying to get past him. Keeping an eye on everyone outside the barn, he moves slightly to leave a path for Ashlan to leave the barn.
Belkior tries a different method to enter the barn, a soothing voice. It is not successful as Lang stays in the doorway. Belkior remembers from his clerical training that if they can get the Vampire Spawn into the daylight it will destroy them and free Ashlan and Lang from the domination. He also remembers that Vampire Spawn need to get back into their coffins to be able to return to a solid form if they have been damaged enough to be put into gaseous form.
OOC - to get past Lang you need to Bull Rush, Overrun or Tumble.
Angus casts Angus's Hideous Laughter on Ashlan.
OOC - Ashlan Will save DC 17 or fall prone and be laughing for the next 7 rounds (no actions can be taken).
Xenia still standing ready outside the barn offering up an alternative method of getting into the barn.
Start CR #6:
OOC - The barn is 30 feet wide by 50 feet long with 10' wide stalls on both sides and a 10' wide corridor down the middle. The second level is the same configuration as the first except for a 10' wide crosswalk from one side to the other (the second level looks like a capital H; no stalls just open storage space with railings; the VS was hanging from a rope attached to the crosswalk). There is a wide ladder at the far end of the barn leading to the second level (not within the light spell). The second level is at about 20' high and the overall ceiling starts at 30' high on the edge to 40' high in the middle.
OOC - Famina (+1) and Wynn (at -4) make Listen DC's 15/17 to hear Ghast/VS movement on the left side of the second level. Make Spot DC's 21/12 with the same modifier's to see the Ghast/VS standing on the left side of the second level by the crosswalk. Anyone else getting into the barn this round can make a Spot DC 21/12 at -8 to see the Ghast/VS.
Otherwise it is quiet and still.

Angus casts another Angus's Hideous Laughter, this time targeting his friend Lang. He knows that a fighter's weakness is its will save and is not surprised when the big guy falls to the ground, laughing hysterically. Angus urges Xenia inside and wonders when he will stop having to cast his spells at his friends and can cast them at his enemies. Angus remains outside.
Belkior casts a healing spell on Syr, watching the large gashes from Ashlan's weapons practically disappear from the power of his god Alemi. He once again moves towards Lang and breathes a sigh of relief when Lang falls down. Belkior enters the barn, stepping around his two laughing comrades. Belkior is standing just inside the doorway of the barn.
Ashlan remains on the ground laughing just inside the doorway (6 rounds remaining).
Lang is hit by the magic spell from Angus. He falls to the ground laughing just outside the doorway (7 rounds remaining).
Xenia tumbles past the two laughing fighters and lightly rolls to her feet. With a quick whirl of her sling she launches a sling bullet at the Ghast is hears a solid thump as it hits the Ghast square in the chest. Xenia is in the barn between the doorway the rope/crosswalk.
Syr feels a lot better as Alemi's healing power infuses into his body. He moves into the barn, ending his turn below the crosswalk, reaching for the rope that is just within the grasp of elf.

I am going to talk/email Jerry with my concerns over being the full time DM. My concerns are being able to post consistently during the summer months. My family has a cottage on a lake in Vermont and I have no internet access when I am up there.
If do become DM I will need someone within the group to step up into what will be my short-lived ADM role. If possible this person will DM for the months of July and August.
If I do not become DM I will stay in the role of ADM. I have to say I am enjoying myself being DM and am glad that, at a minimum, I will be DM'ing 1 month a year.
If anyone has any feedback on how I have done posting please post it.

Syr Monday January 30th, 2006 6:00:58 PM
(OOC: hmm my post didn't appear again) Glancing over the edge, he rolls his eyes at the two laughing individuals, "Hey, can someone please tie up our two laughing traitors before the spell wears off?"
Surveying the upper level, he sees the boxes that everyone is refering to and starts to move toward them. Assuming his progress is unimpeded, he grasps one of the boxes by the corners and drags it over to the hole made in the wall by Famina and pushes the box out into the sunlight, relying on the ground to break it open.
If Famina doesn't open a hole large enough, he moves the box to the railing before calling "Look out below, vampire dropping down!" Then, he shoves the box down to the ground inside the barn.

OOC - we will stay in combat round actions until the Hideous Laughter's wear off or the Dominations are broken.
End CR #8
Angus's potent magic missile spell kills the last visible undead. Famina looks around the area and sees what appears to be a tarp or heavy cloth kind of attached to the sloping roof. With her height she is able to reach it with a slight jump and give it a tug. It easily comes off some nails and falls to the ground leaving a gaping hole in the roof (about 3-4' in diameter). The flash of light seen before is now a steady stream off light pouring into the barn, reaching all the way to the ground level (coming in from the left side and hitting the ground floor in the dark area of the back of the barn).
Both Famina and Wynn, even in his sickened state (-2 on all rolls for 9 minutes) can see a row of coffin shaped boxes near the hole. Syr from his location on the crosswalk can also see the boxes. He starts to move towards them drawing Xenia and Belkior's gaze in that direction. The 2 of them from the ground floor, with the additional light streaming in, can make out some of the boxes. He gets over to the boxes and counts 6 of them. He starts to drag one over towards the hole and realizes that it is extremely heavy and awkward. He is not sure if he can lift it up by himself and jam it through the whole in the roof since the hole is at about the 10' level. He then turns to start to drag it towards the railing. Even that is difficult as the weight of the coffin is in the hundreds of pounds.
The coffins are locked (unknown by party members at this point). They appear to be well made and are slightly larger than a typical coffin. It will take a Strength check DC 23 to force the lock and open the coffins.
All other rolls did not result in anything or were unsuccessful.

Famina (prayer, song?, fatigued) Tuesday January 31st, 2006 2:04:01 AM
"It looks like they are...dormant?" she hazards. The warrior woman basks in the sunlight, letting it fall across her lightly tanned skin, warming her after the closeness to the cold that is undeath. She draws her sword up and sheathes it, figuring she'll need both hands to do this next task. The tired barbarian lets her shield drop to the ground, figuring she can always pick it up later. After all, it weighs like a ton... And she needs all of her energy to do the next task. She grips a coffin and tugs on it, testing it... (not an actual roll here, just roleplay). "These will be difficult to open." She looks to Syr and sees what he's doing. "I'll help you with that." Going over, she begins to help him. (Move and move this round)
Belkior (AC 22; HP 48) Tuesday January 31st, 2006 7:34:46 AM

"Careful! If those are the things coffins, they should be dormant right now!" Belkior thinks for a moment, then calls up to Syr and Famina again.
Uhhh ... how many boxes or coffins do you see up there?"
When the two reply that they see six boxes, Belkior gets excited. Looking over to Xenia, the Healer points to the broken ends of the tool that was securing the door.
"Xenia, there might be two more undead up there in those boxes. Take those stakes when you go up there. I'll go after you."
After Xenia moves to go up the ladder, Belkior will follow.
When he gets up there, he takes a moment to survey the scene.
"What you need to do is move the boxes into the sunlight. Then open them. And ... ahhh ... there's two more boxes than vampires that we've already fought. Watch out for new vampires showing up."

Look at those two down there succumbing to the vampires influence. Anyway, Let's get this over with." With Famina's help he pushes the heavy coffin over the edge and watches while it crashes into the ground down below.
Xenia (AC20, HP42/42) d20+11=19 Tuesday January 31st, 2006 10:33:50 AM ... tie 'em up ... Yeah. Alright. But ...
"You know, Syr, I don't think tying them up is such a good idea. I mean, if they need to defend themselves against someone else, 'side from us, they'd be, you know, like, jammed."
Then an idea comes to her. Pulling a length of rope from her bag, the rogue straddles Laughing Scorpion Boy. He'll probs be the first one to come out of the Hilarity. A double loop for the wrists. Bind the wrists behind him and stretch it back taut, to the ankles. Tie the ankles in a slip knot where he can't reach it.
Then there's scrapping accompanied by the sounds of grunts and heavy lifting.
"Hey! Are you gonna throw them down here?" The rogue calls the question over her shoulder as she works. "Or you gonna want us to go up there?"
"I think I saw some farm tools up there already, Belkie." She spares a moment to point to the Right part of the Loft. "Rakes and those Sticky Fork things."
"Hey you guys! If you need to get Ash free real quick, just pull on this end of the rope. The whole thing will come apart."
The rogue glances out the door behind her to estimate the remaining daylight.

End CR#9
Famina steps up to the coffin that Syr is moving and gives the lid a sharp tug. It doesn't budge and Famina notices a lock on the side of the box. Unfortunately the key is not in the lock. Famina and Wynn each grab hold of the box that Syr is trying to manhandle to the railing to toss off the side. It is not easy moving the coffin, especially since Famina is fatigued and Wynn everyone now and then puts his hands to his mouth to keep from throwing up. Between the 3 of them they are able to get the box to the railing. The three look at each other wondering how they are going to lift the great weight up and over the railing since it will not fit underneath it. Wynn (spot 13) then notices a pulley mechanism hanging from the roof above the crosswalk. His gaze moves to the railing and he notices that it is removable, allowing for items to be hauled up to the second level. He quickly removes the railing and the three push the coffin through the opening in the railing.
The coffin teeters on the edge of the crosswalk for a split second and then plummets to the ground below. A great crash is heard as the coffin slams into the ground with the great force of a heavy object. Once the coffin is motionless, the group sees that the coffin is damaged but did not burst apart (damage 15). Slow streams of dirt start to pour out the cracks that now appear throughout the sides of the coffin. Also, the lock/lid is sprung and the lid pops open revealing a Vampire Spawn. The VS does not move and it is a solid form, not gaseous.
The remaining 3 active Crimson Shields that are on the ground level shout out questions on what the three have found and also shout out suggestions and encouragement. Xenia moves over to Ashlan and starts to tie him up. She gets partially though the process (bind a character takes 1 minute). Angus moves out of the way so the falling coffins do not squish him. Belkior moves to the ladder and climbs up to the second level.
OOC - Famina you realize that you may become exhausted well before the remaining 5 coffins are tossed off the crosswalk.

The Crimson Shields all run about in a frenzy, like a chicken with its head cut off. Everyone has thoughts and suggestions on the problems, but nothing gets done. Where is their leader in this great time of need?
Wynn pulls out a rope and looks for a way to attach it to the pulley or part of the barn structure. The only ladder he has seen was the one he climbed, but that was attached to the barn. There are a couple of support beams that he may be able to throw the rope around (make a use rope check if you do this).
Angus moves over to Ashlan to attempt to take his weapons away from him. Ashlan is still holding on to his weapons and he realizes the man's strength is too great to try and wrestle them away. He turns around and casts Mage hand. He magically takes one end of the rope and moves it 15' towards the pulley, much to the amazement of Wynn (basically reached the pulley as it hangs about 4-5' from the roof and you are starting at Wynn's chest height).
Xenia gives up her attempt at tying up Ashlan as she realizes it will take too long. She moves to the rope and climbs up it to the second level.
OOC - locks are slightly above average (open lock DC 27).
Belkior yells down some suggestions on how to deal with the Vampire Spawn, but no one follows up on them. He retrieves a wand and moves to Wynn's side and heals him 7 hit-points.
OOC - Famina you are not exhausted yet, but will have to roll Con DC 10 check each round you move a coffin or become exhausted. I cannot find any real info on this in the books. If someone can point me to a source I will use that instead.
Famina rests from the exertion of moving the coffin. She watches the activity below and offers some suggestions. She looks around and sees plenty of wooden farm tools on the other side of the second level, the side that the coffins are not on (ooc -- plenty of wooden pitchforks, rakes, etc. over on that side).
Syr tries to force the lock on the next coffin with a kick from his small, but strong leg. He is unsuccessful on the attempt. He moves over to the railing and calls down to Angus for direction.

Angus watches Xenia reach the loft. "Lets open the coffins quick and if not drop them down here. We need to kill the two that are controlling Land and Ashlan."
Angus will look at the broken door and see if there are any wooded shards he can use as a stake, hopefully on the spawn and not Famina. Angus doubts he has the strenght to pierce the creatures sterum.
Famina d6=3 Thursday February 2nd, 2006 4:25:24 PM
Famina hears Angus's call and nods to herself. Her moment to take a few breaths has passed, and now she needs to do an action. (Last round, when I searched, I thought I'd implied I would move over to such a wooden weapon. I'll assume that I am close enough to one.) She takes a step over to a few wooden tools and choose a very old fashioned, wooden pitchfork. The kind any farmer would use to throw away hay, one made out of wood as it's cheaper... She hopes that the three long wooden pieces are sharp enough to pierce the ribcage of a body, but is not sure. But she might as well give it a try. People keep on climbing up and down the ladder, and Famina decides she needs to just move quickly. So she simply glances down to make sure it's clear, then hops off the edge landing next to the coffin with only slight pain. (I'll assume I take 1d6 falling damage, or 3 in this case. Does my DR stop it? If so, I take no damage) She straddles the coffin, kicking one or two loose remains of the lid out of the way, looking down at the sleeping Vampire Spawn. It's so peaceful, and its eyes are closed. But that could change at any moment. So she lifts the improvised stake up high and looks down, readying herself to stab it through the heart next round. She hopes this works.
(What kind of roll would it be to hit the things' heart? A damage roll, or a strength roll? Or an attack roll? Or just a full-round action?)

The Crimson Shields get a little more organized in their attempt to finish off the Vampire Spawn. Time is their enemy now as the laughter spells end shortly, darkness is less than a half an hour away and who knows what other undead lurk about the plantation looking for fresh blood.
Wynn prepares to make a jump for the pulley and realizes at the last minute that Angus Mage Handed the rope through the pulley for him. Gravity takes over and the rope falls down towards Wynn, nicely slung over the pulley (OOC - Wynn the rope is through the pulley and ready for your next action).
Xenia glides over to the next coffin, while retrieving the tools of her profession. She gives the lock on the coffin a good, hard look and mutters about its quality. She then starts to try to pick it (OOC - open lock DC 27).
Angus shouts some directions to the Crimson Shields. He then retrieves a pointy piece of wood from the fragments that are strewn about the lower level of the barn.
OOC- yes Famina you had time last round to pick up a wooden pitchfork.
Famina jumps down to the lower level with the pitchfork she had retrieved from the far side of the upper level. She moves over to the coffin and prepares to impale the Vampire Spawn with it.
OOC - 3 damage is non-lethal; A "Coup de grace" type attempt is a full round action; roll a d20 to impale the VS; with this type of implement you will fail on a roll that is the difference between your strength number and 20. Example - 18 strength will fail on a 1 or 2. Failure is either not impaling at all or missing the heart.
Belkior moves over to the wall near the coffins and where the hole is. He picks a spot near the floor and smacks it with his mace, trying to loosen or break the board. The mace hits the wall solidly and, given enough time, Belkior thinks he can pop enough of the lower wallboards off to make an opening big enough to push the coffins out.

Angus hears Xenia's call of sucess. "Great girl. Move on to the next one and have someone send the spawn down here for Famina to thow out the barn door."
Angus looks to Syr. "Calm down, Ashlan did not attack you of his own volition. Just take his weapons. Hopefully we kill the spawn that dominated him. I will back you up if he tries to attack you again. I will recast my laughter spell on him or fry him is necessary, lets hope it does not come to that."
Angus looks around and announces to all. "Lets work together people, and fast."
Syr d20+4=14 Friday February 3rd, 2006 5:12:35 PM
Struggling with Ashlan for his weapon (str 14) he calls up and over his shoulder, "I am calm. I'd just rather not be stabbed in the back again. I'm doing as you asked but wasn't the vamp's last command to attack me? You may want to get that spell ready."
Famina d20=6 Friday February 3rd, 2006 8:45:07 PM
"if my thinking is right, if we take him outside, he'll simply turn back to mist and come back in... The stake makes him paralyzed, forces him to stay material. I think." Famina shrugs. "Here goes!" With that, she makes a valiant attempt! She arches the pitchfork up high and brings it down sharply with all her strength. Luckily she's just strong enough to pierce it! (with my fatigued condition, I have a -2 to strength, making my strength 16...so I made it by 2 barely!) Nevertheless, she clenches her grip and steels herself just in case the thing reacts. She pushes down with the pitchfork, figuring if it tries to grab her, it won't be able to...the pitchfork will hold it back at least. It's a pitiful defense, but all she has.

"Wynn, what do you think? I can help you tie up a coffin or we can just open up this one and heave the vampire out."
Belkior moves over to the unlocked coffin, looping his mace back on his belt as he goes. When he gets there, he tries to open the lid himself to dispose of what rests inside.

End CR #12.
More progress is made in opening the coffins and terminating the Vampire Spawn.
Wynn moves over to the coffin next to the one Xenia is working on. He spends his round tying his rope to a handle on the coffin. He voices some suggestions on what to do with the coffin when it is aloft, but only Xenia and Belkior are close enough to hear him.
OOC - you think your best possible course of action is to lift the coffin and let the natural angle of the rope pull it towards the middle of the barn and then let it drop. Roll strength DC 6 to do it by yourself. Roll another d20 (no plusses or minuses) and if it is a 1, the pulley breaks.
Xenia is successful on her attempt to pick the lock on the coffin. She moves two coffins down, passing the one that Wynn is tying his rope to (OOC - coffins are pretty much in a row and fairly close to each other).
Angus stands in the middle of the lower level and watches all the action going on. He shouts encouragement and directions to all that will listen.
Syr grabs a hold of one of Ashlan's weapons and tries to pull the longsword from the man's grasp. The weapon comes quite easily out of the man's hand (natural 1).
OOC - Ashlan is still holding his Kukri.
Famina is struck with indecision as she prepares to impale the VS. Angus shouts one thing, but her mind tells her another. She sticks with her mind and slams the pitchfork though the prone VS's chest. The distraction threw her off a bit, but she is sure she pierced all the way through the body and hit the heart (OOC - that was a full round action; if you want you may consider yourself 5' closer to wherever you want to go next round OR you may pick-up the VS for moving in your next turn).
Belkior hears Wynn talk of using the pulley to leverage the coffins. He looks over and sees Wynn tying a rope to the coffin. He moves over to the coffin Xenia unlocked and grasps the lid and heaves it open. Up goes the lid and he stares down into a pile of dirt, no undead just dirt.

Angus - Mage Armor Saturday February 4th, 2006 8:26:26 AM
Angus hears Ashlan stop laughing and quickly casts his hideous laughter spell at him again: DC 17 save.
"Syr, I know he stabbed you, but he was dominated. If my spell fails, feel free to beat him senseless. I just do not want to have to use up too many of Belkior's spells to fix him up. We are not out of the woods yet."
Angus looks to Famina. "You are wasting time. Get the spawn in the sun and stop playing with the pitchfork!"
Angus looks up at the loft and hears the noise up there, but does not really know what is going on. "What happening Xenia? Wynn, Belkior have you gotten any spawn in the sunlight yet? Are you sending any more down here? Lets just hurry." Angus finishes anxiously.
Angus is getting concerned. His spells are low and so must be Belkior's, and the sun is going down, and they are not yet on Belkior's concecrated ground.

Angus casts another Hideous Laughter spell targeting Ashlan. He shouts out to the upper level, trying to get a status report from the Shields up there.
Ashlan is unable to resist the powerful magic spell from Angus and starts laughing once again (will save 9). He remains prone on the ground near the doorway (7 rounds remaining).
Wynn swings over the coffin and releases the rope. The coffin crashes to the first level, practically waking the dead (damage 19). The coffin is extremely damaged. It has nearly burst apart at the seams. A large amount of dirt pours out of the cracks onto the floor of the barn. The lid on the coffin springs open revealing yet another Vampire Spawn, resting peacefully in the dirt of his coffin.
Xenia fails in her attempt to pick the lock of the coffin. She starts the process all over again.
Belkior is not happy to find an empty coffin. He does decide to leave a nasty surprise for any undead that tries too use the coffin.
Famina runs outside with the VS on her pitchfork. The pitchfork holds, and the VS does not fall off. As soon as the undead's body is enveloped in the sunlight it starts to smoke. Within a few seconds the smoke dissipates and all Famina sees is a pile of ash on the ground with something shiny sticking out of it.

(looked it up.. apparently to become exhausted from fatigued takes an action that would cause one to be fatigued normally. And, Famina's barbarian fatigue is different from regular fatigue. Apparently, fatigue will end immediately after combat or combat rounds will end...the regular type takes 8 hours of rest. I do agree with the DM, though, that continued stress might just exhaust Famina, forcing her to be even more down, till combat ends and she gets a bit of rest. All this running must be tiring poor Famina, but she still makes her con check. Yay!) Famina rushes back into the barn with the pitchfork and a triumphant cry. "Yaaaaaah!" She grins and goes over to the coffin next to Wynn. "Here, use this," she tells him, and flips the pitchfork around pointy end towards her and gives him the stick end. She looks to Angus and sorta puffs up a little. "Tired? Me? After only a few vampires?" She takes a deep breath and shyly admits, "Actually..yes, I am a little winded. But I can do well, do not fear." Famina stands ready to give Wynn a hand... aiding him if need be by pushing down on his shoulder with him (I rolled a Str check DC 10 and can give him a +2 on his own str check to stake the vampire). (I dunno how many actions this is... I think it's just 1 move action to head back inside, 1 free or 5' action to hand Wynn the stake since he's apparently saving his action to try to find a weapon such as the one she might give him, and maybe her standard action to give him a +2 on the check)

The Shields are rolling now. Everyone is moving decisively after a few rounds of chaos. The Vampire Spawn are literally rolling in their graves as Wynn tosses another off the side.
Xenia is successful on her second attempt on the stubborn lock. She asks an undead question to Belkior and moves on to coffin #5.
Belkior moves to the coffin that Xenia has just unlocked. He answers her question on the undead and what state it is in. He lifts open the lid revealing a third Vampire Spawn lying in its dirt filled coffin.
Syr thanks Angus for the magic spell and asks for the pitchfork from Famina.
Angus continues to direct traffic from the ground level of the barn. He is relieved to have another party member available to destroy the VS as Lang emerges from both the Laughter and Domination.
Lang stands and looks around slightly confused. He acknowledges Angus's question and all can see he is back under his own free will. He looks for an undead to seek vengeance upon.
Wynn floats down to the ground level with the help of his magic ring. He looks around and sees plenty of wooden farm tools. No pitchforks but plenty of broken tools with nice pointy ends to them.

The rogue moves to the next, only to find that there is no next. The girl rogue flicks an eye to the hole in the roof and the waning sunlight beyond.
"Hey, Angus! We're gonna have to find someplace safe to hole up here pretty quick. Any thoughts on where to go? Pull back outside the gate? Down by the stream?"

Belkior (AC 22; HP 48) d20=1 Thursday February 9th, 2006 11:19:52 AM
The halfling cleric looks up as Famina looms over him.
Right! Let's heave together and swing this box over to get it down below."
Belkior puts his little hands on the rope but cannot seem to get a good grip. The rope must be too big for his hands, or something like that. STR check = 1
"Here, let me get out of your way, Famina. Uhh .. no, wait ... I'm on the rope, I guess. Hasn't anybody ever bothered to gease that pulley?"
When Belkior hears the suggestion to camp near the stream, he pipes. "Well, running water may stop the vampire but only if we're on opposite sides. And it might just be able to circle around. Either way, I can secure our campsite for the night."
Angus - mage Armor Thursday February 9th, 2006 1:39:52 PM
Angus is real happy to see two more spawn turn to dust and Xenia claim victory on the last lock. "Lets kill the last spawn and get out of here quick, unless the group wants to press some more." Angus finishes, boviously joking.
Angus takes a moment to consider and calls up to Xenia. "I like your idea of the stream. Lets go check on the horse first and Belkior's first concecrated ground, but we may want to hole up by the stream. I do not think vampires like water. Lets finish the spawn and do a quick search of the barn and take whatever is valuable or will help us fight vampires."
Angus still watches Ashlan closely.
Lang d20+5=25 Thursday February 9th, 2006 1:42:42 PM
Lang comes to Belkior's aid. "I got you Belkior." The big Bugbear grabs the rope and gives a might yank (str 25, nat.20) and drops the coffin down below.
Ashlan Thursday February 9th, 2006 11:47:50 PM
Ashlan still lays laughing, wishing the group could find and kill the spawn that got him soon, specially since his sides are hurting and he feels really useless laying on the floor otherwise, of course this is besides the stupid command he has been given to do if he wasn't laughing.
Famina d20+3=19 d20+3=8 Friday February 10th, 2006 3:52:48 AM
Famina's about to go over and give Belkior a hand. But the group's friendly bugbear comes to the aid of the halfling. In her own way, Famina's glad. It gives her weary muscles less overall work to do. Hearing Xenia's successful cry, she grins and goes over to the rogue tiredly. "Good job!" she cheers her on, and opens the coffin lid. If there's a body in there, she grabs it and forces it towards the sunlight. (Str check 19, 8)
Syr d20+9=27 Friday February 10th, 2006 4:11:44 PM
With no vampires on the ground left, he recalls Belkior's words of another vampire around somewhere. To Wynn, he smiles, "4 down 1 to go. If it's here let's try and find it real quick?" The elf's sharp eyes begin following his body into the dim areas of the barn. He slowly moves into each section of the barn, examining the walls, celings, and ground looking for that last vampire (spot 27).
As he passes Ashlan, he shakes his head in disgust and moves on.
Wynn (AC 19, 52/52 HP, +1 Prayer) - Sickened d20+6=20 Friday February 10th, 2006 5:16:37 PM
The bard scans the the darker recesses of the barn from his position on the floor below. Unable to make out very much he calls forth 4 dancing balls of light and sends them up into the darkest corner. "Sila tiri" he sings, "Sila tiriiiii"

Xenia is finally able to pick the lock on coffin #5. She stands up to move to the next coffin, but there isn't one. She calls down to Angus on where to spend the night.
Famina moves over and opens coffin #5. She looks down and sees dirt and no Vampire Spawn.
Belkior & Lang lift coffin #6 up and swing it out past the crosswalk and they let go of the rope and it crashes to the floor (damage 20). It completely bursts open, breaking apart in total, spilling dirt everywhere. The remaining Vampire Spawn can be seen partially covered by the dirt that used to be in his coffin.
Syr & Wynn both come back into the barn to see the coffin smash to the ground and the last undead be revealed. They try normal and magical means to locate more undead, but find nothing.
Angus continues to watch the Shields at work and keeps an eye on Ashlan. He also agrees that the stream might be a good location to camp for the night.

Wynn (AC 19, 52/52 HP, +1 Prayer) - Sickened d20=16 d20=12 d20+6=12 Friday February 10th, 2006 8:26:53 PM
Wynn moves the dancing lights to the next darkened area of the barn with a subtle gesture and then stabs down hard with the broken pitchfork into the remains of the vampire spawn that spilled from the open coffin [Str=16]. The pitchfork bends under the weight of the odious creature as the bard struggles to carry it out into the waning light.[Pitchfork Str=12].
Assuming that Wynn manages to carry or drag the undead into the sunlight, he will return to the barn and continue directing his magical lights into the darker recesses of the barn to assist the other 'Shields' in their search for any remaining undead.
He will also keep a wary eye on Ashalan, in case Angus' magic wears off. [Spot=12]
Angus - Mage Armor d20+2=20 Saturday February 11th, 2006 7:22:41 AM
Next Three Rounds:
Angus moves out onto the path in front of the barn and watches the Sheilds finish off the spawn. At the same time, watching Ashlan, Angus calls out to his fellows "Be ready for Ashlan to come out of the spell. Weapons and spells ready, just in case. I think he should be fine, but you can not be too careful."
Angus scans the area and looks for a good place to camp for the night by the stream (spot 20).
Finally Angus calls back to those in the barn. "lets make a quick search and then form up outside. We need to find a place to hold up for the night. There are still nasties about." Angus keeps thinking to himself, two empty coffins.
Lang d20+6=7 Saturday February 11th, 2006 7:26:45 AM
Upon seeing Xenia reveal the last of the four spawn, Lang grabs hold of the beast with his beefy hands and carries it over to the dying sunlight entering the loft from the roof door. When the spawn falls apart, lang claps his hands to remove the ash and says "Those four will not be bothering anyone every again."
Lang Climbs down and meets up with Sunshine and spends some time playing, but still keeps a careful watch (spot 7), but Sunshine is so happy to see Lang that he is greatly distracted.
Famina Saturday February 11th, 2006 6:10:09 PM
The last of the bugbears revealed and quickly dispatched by the others, Famina is very grateful. She climbs down the ladder and hops onto a bail of hay and watches the others tiredly. Just in case, she draws her sword and sticks it in the bail next to her.
Belkior (AC 22; HP 48) d20+5=10 Sunday February 12th, 2006 5:19:44 PM
The halfling cleric moves over to the coffin that Xenia just opened. Once there, he removes another vial of holy water from his pack and begins pouring it over the soil inside.
"I don't know for sure, but this should prevent the vampire from using this coffin."
Once he has completed those actions, Belkior looks around at his companions. He's trying to quickly judge how badly each of them is injured. If he is correct, Syr is the worst because of the drainign powers of these vampires. Although the new fellow, Ashalan, might also bad off. But he might still be controlled by a vampire.
After emptying the flask of holy water in the coffin, the halfling will begin to stir up the dirt. Partly to mix the holy water in and partly to search for anything that might be hidden there. A foul creature like a vampire may choose to use its coffin as a vault for both mementos of its mortal life and items precious to it during its undeath. Search = 10
Actions 1A - Move to Coffin 1B - Retrieve holy water
2A - sprinkle holy water 2B - review group's condition

Syr Sunday February 12th, 2006 8:28:18 PM
Seeing Wynn struggle with the weight of the vampire, he moves to help the bard get the last of the spawn into the open sunlight. Once completed, he also moves inside the barn dusting his hands off.
"Last time, I was ALL for pressing our advantage and look where it got me. This time, I'm willing to make a strategic retreat and pull back to wait until morning. Some of us could use the rest."
As the halfling nears, he shoos the figure away with a wrist flick, "I'm okay, you took care of me earlier with that heal. It's Ashlan that concerns me now."
Xenia (AC20, HP42/42) d20+11=31 d20+16=36 Sunday February 12th, 2006 10:52:09 PM "Numbers will talk to you, Alexandria." The voice of her Da comes back to her from years gone past. "Take the time. Listen to them. Use your head. Even when things go upside-down. Especially then. That's when you need every advantage you can get."
One on the floor. The other hanging from the rope. Two that dropped down from the loft just before Lang closed the door. That makes four.
"Hey, Angus, I think two of these Vampies decided to sleep over at someone else's today. Maybe they're in one of the other houses. Dunno where they are, but I think this is all we got."
Xenia gives the loft one more look. Search. Yeah ... Even vampies got stuff. Well, leastwise that kinda sorta makes sense. The dark rogue stalks quickly over to the first of the burn up vampies lying in the light from the hole in the roof. Quickly and methodically, she sifts the remains for salvage. Doesn't take long.
"Coming down!" The rogue swings under the guardrail, taking the impact in her legs and turning the force into a tuck and roll.

End CR#18-20
Wynn is able to stab the last Vampire Spawn with the pitchfork and carry it out of the barn and into the waning sunlight. As the three before it, this one also smokes and turns to dust, leaving a pile of ash. He is able to get back into the barn and start looking around again using his dancing lights. Nothing of interest is seen in the now lit dark parts of the barn.
Angus moves outside to witness the destruction of the last Vampire Spawn. While outside he looks towards the stream for a campsite, but it is quite far away and the tall grass obstructs his vision (there is the woodshed and the mill on that side of the house). He then moves back in the barn.
Lang climbs down to the ground level and spends his time with Sunshine.
Famina finds a comfortable place on the ground level and rests.
Belkior pours holy water on the second coffin that did not contain an undead. He also climbs down to the first level and starts checking on the condition of the Shields. It is quite apparent that Lang, Ashlan and Syr have been injured, but Syr wounds look freshly healed.
Please list HP's so Belkior knows how injured everyone is.
Syr assists Wynn in carrying the VS outside and into the wonderful, destroying sunlight. He moves back into the barn and comments about the folly of rushing into the fray.
Xenia mentally goes through the battle and the headcount of the undead. She gives the pile of Vampire Spawn ash a little kick with her foot. She hears a clink of metal or rocks and sees something glinting in the pile. She reaches down and finds out that it is a necklace. The gem-encrusted necklace is quite stunning in its gaudiness and in its weight. She then moves down to the ground level.
Everyone is on the ground level of the barn.
Ashlan stops laughing quite suddenly for the second time today. He stands up slowly and stretches as if his muscles ache. He slowly looks at all the members of the group, but does nothing else.
Ashlan you are free of both the Laughter spell and the VS Domination.

The general consensus of the group is to go back to the Floating City and see what is going on. I will build the next module(s) upon that.
There was minimal interest in using the Plateau City and the merchant as a module at his time, outside of getting the orphans setup.
There also was minimal interest in the Undead angle so I will not expand the plantation adventure into a purging of an uprising of Undead that was planning on taking over the Plateau City - at least not for the next adventure. But you will still have to at least clean out the plantation.
And lastly the interest was minimal in using the plantation as a base of operations.
Let's assume during downtime your characters have discussed the future of the Crimson Shields and they have decided to clean out the plantation, get the orphans setup there and then the Shields go back to the Floating City.
If anyone has any questions/comments please let me know.

"Hey, look at this weerdo thing I found." Xenia holds the necklace up in a raised fist. "Eew. Who'd wear something like this? Wonder if it's magic. Or valuable." Like that would make it less the bizarre trinket that it is.
Emerging from out of the big barn doors, the rogue examines the bauble in the waning daylight. With care, she tucks her Lenses into an upper pocket before strapping a pair of Goggles over her eyes. Then, with a quick reach back to her bag, the dark girl whips out a magnifying glass.
"Never know what kinda gross stuff people will buy," she mutters to herself as she goes over the details of the necklace. "Hey, wonder if the others got stuff too!" The magnifying glass disappears as Xenia goes to work on the three other piles of ash. "You can always hope that not all vampies got taste as bad as the one upstairs."
"You alright Wynn?" Suddenly, as she concludes her search of one of the ex-vampires, Xenia stands bolt upright. She looks all around, cocking an ear to better pick up any stealthy creeping up noises.
"Just checking," she says by way of explanation. "So where are we gonna hole up tonight?" she asks. Eyes still peering into the darkening landscape, Xenia rejoins Wynn cooing over the pale look in the bard's face.

Angus checks to make sure everyone is alright and looks closely at Ashlan. "Are you ok Ashlan?"
Angus calls out to everyone "Lets move check on the horse together and then find a place to hole up by the stream. Lets stay away from those fields. We can go get healed up and then Belkior and I can recover our spells and we can finish off the vampires."
Lang & Sunshine Monday February 13th, 2006 4:52:46 PM
Lang goes and meets up with Sunshine and scratches his ears while he listens to Xenia and Angus. "I will go check on the horse." Lang leads on with Sunshine happily on his heels.
Syr (was injured, not anymore) Monday February 13th, 2006 6:01:41 PM
Moving over to Angus, the elf speaks in hushed tones, "Listen, I know I got a little carried away back there. I can't help myself sometimes, I just see something and need to react." Showing his youth, he kicks the dirt with a toe and continues mumbling an apology, "I know that's one of the reasons you paired us up... to balance each other. Despite the threat, I'll stay closer to Famina in the future."
Belkior (AC 22; HP 48) Monday February 13th, 2006 9:27:44 PM
The halfling cleric calls out to the big ranger.
"Lang! Come back, please! We should stick together until we've made sure this place is safe. Remember, there were two empty coffins up there."
Looking at the bugbear, Belkior continues. "Besides, I think that you need some healing. I want to make sure everyone is okay before we move out."
Belkior will rummage through his pack to find his wands, preparing to use both the Wand of Cure Moderate Wounds and the Wand of Cure Light Wounds to repair the hurts of the party.
"Come over here, Lang, and I'll patch you up a little bit."
Once everyone is healed, Belkior will huddle with Angus.
"Angus, we can go back to the spot that I earlier consecrated. That's probably best since Lang is concerned about the horse, and that's where we left the wagon. My spell will last for some time and I can cast another to get us the entire way through the night. By morning, we can be prepared to go into the other buildings."
The halfling will lean in towards Angus and whisper quietly. "From what I recall, we should still keep an eye on both Lang and Ashalan. We don't know for certain that we destroyed the right undead."
"Has anyone searched those other coffins and remains yet?"
[OOC = I will roll Cure spells once I see what everyone's HPs are like, and whether Lang sticks around for healing.]
Wynn (AC 19, 52/52 HP) - Sickened Monday February 13th, 2006 11:51:01 PM
Wynn lets Xenia fuss about him...until he hears Angus address the mercenary backstabber, Ashlan.
His stomache roils, and he pauses, bringing a hand to his abdomen. "Betrayer!" shouts the bard, lifting his sword and pointing it at Jancassis man. "You would have us accept you! Let my actions proove my worth you said! Well I have seen your actions, and you are no Shield!" The bard's eyes are wild and his voice cracks with emotion.
Ashlan Sinclair Tuesday February 14th, 2006 12:43:43 AM
Ashlan looks to Angus and nods some as he feels his stomach muscles tighten and hurt some from all the laughing, "Yeah, alot better now. You really need a new spell for times like these. All that laughing has my stomach hurting."
Ashlan looks to Wynn when he speaks and then Syr and sighs, "I didn't attack Syr on my own free will. Do you think Lang guarded that door because he wanted to?" Ashlan looks to Syr and sighs deeply, "I'm sorry for attacking you Syr, I didn't want to but couldn't stop myself from doing what the vampire thing said."
Ashlan thinks and nods, "If you think I'm no shield and if you think I attacked Syr on purpose and all then maybe I should gather my weapons and be off." Ashlan looks to Syr, "Keep the kukri and longsword for now if you do not trust me."
Ashlan will move to follow Lang if he continues going as he planned and just incase pulls the greataxe from off his back which is hidden by his hat of disquise.
Famina (52/68) Tuesday February 14th, 2006 4:06:00 AM
Famina is grateful for the time to rest and feels somewhat rejuvenated. She unstraps her breastplate and stretches on the hay, luxuriating in that soft and warm feeling spreading through her at that moment. Then she sits back up, watching the others. For Ashlan, she feels some sympathy. She too had felt the strength of the vampire's will, and had it been different, she would have joined him in attacking the party. But explaining this... she decides that perhaps, fate has spoken, and to go against it, to argue for him to come, may be to go against fate. Something she does not like to do. All at once, she sees the sparkly necklace and gets interested. She hops over and takes a look. "Ooo, very nice... not for me, but for the price it might fetch. Usually, the more sparkly it is, the more valuable, or completely opposite. In any case, I'll go check the other vampires to see if they have it." She shrugs her armor again, grabs her sword, and goes outside to scatter the other Vampire Spawn ashes and search for anything worthwhile. Shooting an apologetic look at Ashlan before doing so...

"Hey, Belkie," she whispers, "could you keep her out of my hair for a bit too? Thanks."
Angus (second illegal post) Tuesday February 14th, 2006 6:45:30 PM
Angus smiles at Syr "Lets stick to the plan in the future and we will at least know what each of us is up to. That said, you did a heck of a job on your there. Glad you are on our side."
Angus looks to Wynn. "You have to check your anger to Ashlan. The spawn dominating him and forced him to do things against his will. I am SURE, Ashlan will be able to fight off the vampires power next time and get some payback."
When Belkior talks of spells, Angus reminds him. "I will have dispel magic covered for tomorrow, take more undead protection or destruction spells. Nice job today to."
Angus sees Lang wondering away and calls to the other Shield. "Lets keep up with the big hairy, before he gets lost." Angus moves to follow Lang to the Concecrate as Lang checks on the horse and wagon.
Angus calls over his shoulder. "Xenia, find anything nice. Or should we start calling you our walking and talking key...." Angus snickers at his own mirth, but is very pleased with how the difficult battle worked out, as it could have been much worse.

The Shields are regrouped in the barn. A wide range of emotions is going through the group right now. Anger, embarrassment, concern and resignation to name a few. All but Xenia, who is too fascinated by the necklace she found, can tell that Lang and Ashlan have their own wits about them. The two Vampire Spawn who dominated them were at least 2 of the 4 VS that the group killed.
Sense Motive checks -- 20, 18, 18, 14, 1 & 20.
Xenia shows the group the necklace she found. This in turn stirs some interest in Famina. The two of them head outside and sift through the three piles of Vampire Spawn ash. They unearth three more necklaces. All three have the same general design and gaudiness, but having different gems. Xenia's quick appraisal on the first one leads her to believe it is worth quite a bit, probably around 1,000 gold pieces.
Angus gives some directions to Lang and the Ranger and his dog start to head towards the back gate where the Shields entered the plantation. Ashlan falls in next to Lang, pulling out a spare weapon after not pushing the issue of his main weapons. The Bugbear gives his fight partner a nod, knowing the inner turmoil the man must be going through.
Belkior uses his wand to cure Famina and calls out to Lang and Ashlan to wait up for the rest of the group. He sees the Ranger look back and he also sees the three of them slow their pace down to let the group catch up.
After a brief discussion on where to spend the night, the rest of the Shields assemble and move out after Lang, Ashlan and Sunshine. Within a short amount of time the whole group is back together and moving towards the consecrated ground. They make their way back around the main home and past the shallow graves and onto the road that leads between the fields. Around ten minutes later they reach the back gate and the horse and cart. He is resting peacefully right where Lang left him.
The shadows are very deep now. All can tell that complete darkness is but minutes away. A few of the people in the group remember that last night there was a half moon. Night visibility will be limited but at least it will not be completely dark.
OOC - Syr does not have a negative level.

IIRC, the Concecrated area was over the grave of the woman we found in the entrance to the gate. Didn't we take her just outside the gate and bury her?
That would make the Concecrated area outside the gate.
