Going to a Meeting

Preparations (DM JohnP)
Wednesday February 8th, 2006 8:57:11 PM

The party starts organizing and planning for the meeting this evening.

Mira wonders how to go about learning more of the Bearers of the Chalice. She and the others recall that the house is probably in Wealthy Quarter, maybe Noble Quarter. Those are purely residential neighbourhoods without any shops or taverns. Probably the closest tavern is a ritzy place in Gold Quarter, just on the edge of Wealthy Quarter, called the Blue Ale Tavern.

When Kadaz suggests going to the Guard to find out anything about the Bearers, everyone nods. It's common knowledge to everone in Plateau City that the residents in Wealthy and Noble Quarters employ a private security force called the Silver Swords. From his days on the Guard, Kadaz remembers that alleged perpetrators were often in pretty poor shape when the Swords turned them over to the Guards.

All the while, Arm is fretting about a possible fight.

After the discussion has been going on for a while, Shadow comes back to the apartment. He's been to look at the mansion and is able to report to the group about what he saw.

The mansion was typical for the area and didn't appear to be too badly damaged, if at all, from the flooding and events associated with the waking of the Fey King. It's set back from the street behind a wall that Shadow couldn't see over. There were no trees or other cover that would allow him to enter without notice, at least in the daytime. He thinks that he might be able to infiltrate a neighbouring estate and then cross the boundary wall away from the street. The gate at the street was open but guarded by two men. From what he could see, the mansion is multilevel with some turretted towers in front.

After Shadow makes this report, everyone has a chance to do whatever investigation they desire. Depending on where they want to meet after the various investigations, they might have time to visit several places.

Conner  d20-2=1 d20-2=13
Wednesday February 8th, 2006 11:34:15 PM

Conner gives up on the chest, disappearing into his room. The burly fighter reappears moments later with the multiple sheets given to him by the puny bureaucrat at the registry office. They are all fully completed in legible printing and in triplicate.

"I'm going to go see if I can get those names for the monument," he says gruffly. "See if I can find out who owns that place in the fancy quarter, too," he adds. Conner will get Mira to write down the address for him.

+++++++

At the registry office, Conner will wait his turn, but it is hard for the man to sit still for so long and his impatience shows when it is his turn to present himself to the clerk on duty. He offers up the papers along with the 1 GP for processing. "Be quick about it," he growls. (Diplomacy=1)

Changing tactics, he smooths the piece of paper with the Mansion St. address on it on the counter. "Found this address in the pocket of a fellow crushed under a fallen building," he bluffs. "Need to find someone who can identify the body. You know anything about the folks who live here?" (Bluff=13)

Mira  d20+8=16 d20+7=22
Wednesday February 8th, 2006 11:50:38 PM

"I'm going to go check out the University of Magic and the Royal Library over in Merchant Quarter. I've got a funny feeling this necklace of Fendrick's might be more than the bauble of a merchant's wife."

The sorcerer gathers up her notes, and the sketch she made from Fendrick's description. She will spend her time making discreet enquiries...about the necklace...about the personage named Lady Ilonia...and about the group called The Bearer's of the Chalice...

Arm
Thursday February 9th, 2006 5:55:04 AM

Arm agrees with Mira, "I'll be happy to join you and Conner. What say I go with you now, though...I can check out the library, and that way it will save us some time.".

Shadow
Thursday February 9th, 2006 9:43:19 AM

"When and where are we going to meet up? I am planning on resting right now, so that I will be ready to try and infiltrate the mansion tonight." Shadow says as he gets ready to go to his room and lay down, but he will wait to see what the others say.

Kadaz
Thursday February 9th, 2006 9:32:20 PM

"I suggest we meet an hour before the time suggested on the invitation. That will give us a bit to catch up. Who here is going in?" Kadaz makes his suggestions and waits. "I will check on the guard to see if they have info."

Investigations (DM JohnP)
Thursday February 9th, 2006 11:09:49 PM

The party discusses where they will go to investigate the Bearers of the Chalice. As they start leaving, no one declares where they will meet up.

========================================

Conner goes off to the Registry Office to get the information that he wanted. From the conversations that he can't help but overhear, he isn't the only one looking for information on who died, or didn't die, or can't be found after the Troubles. He turns in the forms and the fee to the bored and indifferent clerk. The clerk reviews the papers and replies, "Come back three days from now."

When Conner asks about the address on Mansion Street, the clerk looks over at her supervisor and the other clerks before replying. "Ahh, I really should get you to go through the line again. But, ahh, I could maybe help you now if ... ahh ... you know." It's pretty clear that the clerk is hitning that a bribe might make things go faster.

========================================

Mira and Arm go off to the University of Magic and the Royal Library. As the two walk through the streets, they can see Conner walking ahead of them. Otherwise, Merchant Quarter is both damaged from the flooding and rapidly getting back to normal.

In the University, Mira is directed to the wing devoted to enchantments. After they ascend the stairs to the second floor, Mira sees some classrooms and laboratories where apprentice and advanced students of magic are learning how to imbue items with magic. After asking a student, she and Arm are directed to an office at the end of the wing. When they knock on the door, the hear some shuffling and an elderly gnome opens the door.

"What do you want? You're not from Administration, are you?"

When the two assure the gnome that they aren't University bureaucrats, he will invite them into his cramped office where they cannot find a place to sit. After Mira describes teh necklace, the gnome rubs his small chin.

"Certainly sounds like it could have enchanted. From what you describe, it was certainly of good enough quality to be enchanted. But from just a description, I can't tell more. You haven't been able to see or examine it?"

After taking their leave, the two head over to the Royal Library. After making some inquiries, Mira and Arm can find some books. However, they get more information when they ask a clerk about the Bearers of the Chalice. The clerk directs them to a young man hunched over a large tome.

When the two approach him, they can see that he is reading a text on the history of Gargul. He looks up when they approach.

"Bearers of the Chalice? They're new ... not mentioned in Alepus' here, or in Draco either. Strictly dabblers from what I've heard. About what you'd expect, really, after the Year of Ascension ... death cults just can't seem to get going. Now, in the past, Gargul really inspired some good ... ahh, powerful might be a better term ... cults. But today, with Gargul's aspect changed, most of these groups are just excuses for bored people to shock one another with some make believe."

========================================

Shadow goes for a nap. He's replaying the layout of the mansion in his head as he falls to sleep, recalling the positions of the walls and the guards.

========================================

Kadaz goes off to get some gossip from his former companions in the Guard. After sitting and chatting for a bit, the dwarf asks about the Bearers and Lady Ilonia.

"Bearers? Bunch of rich posers, if you ask me. Heard more about them since the troubles, but they ain't done enough to do anything about."

"Lady Ilonia? Sad about her husband, nice enough guy for a rich bloke. Her? Friend of mine is in the Swords ... nice deal they got, eh? No riots to deal with, nobody looking over their shoulders much ... says she's a cold one. Real snooty, too good to say 'Please' and 'Thank you' to a working man."

=========================================

The party has completed some investigations. They might do a bit more, or ask more at one place or another, but they did agree to meet up no later than supper time.

Arm
Friday February 10th, 2006 6:05:05 AM

Before they all set out, Arm suggests that they meet up at the tavern closeby to their target an hour beforehand. After they leave the library, he says to Mira, "Well, at least we know the bearers aren't a powerful lot, but we should still be on guard.".

Mira
Friday February 10th, 2006 10:18:02 PM

Mira nods her head when Arm speculates about the Bearers but cautions, "we shouldn't assume they are the only ones we will have to contend with." The sorcerer rubs her nose as she tries to remember something. "What was it one of those ya-hoos back there said, something about private police...Silver Swords or something."

As she walks beside Arm on their way to the richer part of town, Mira heaves a sigh. "I sure miss Uriel and Evan. We should think about recruiting a healer, too."

Conner  d20-2=3
Saturday February 11th, 2006 8:07:37 AM

Conner leans in to the counter and speaks in a hushed voice. "Missy, you'll tell me what I need, or I'll let on to to all here that you asked for a bribe. Now, what can you tell me about that address?" [Diplomacy=3]

A Quiet Place for a Drink (DM JohnP)
Saturday February 11th, 2006 2:46:40 PM

Mira and Arm finish their investigations at the University and Library. They have some things to think about.

Meanwhile, Conner is dealing with a clerk at the City Registry Office. After the fighter threatens to disclose her request for a bribe, she looks over at her supervisor. "Give me a minute ... don't be too hasty," she says before moving over to a bank of cabinets.

She glances over to Conner as she leafs through the files inside. After a minute or so, she stops and scribbles something on a bit of paper. The cabinet drawer is slid shut and she walks back to the counter.

"Here," she says as the scrap of paper is slid across the counter. "That's what you're looking for."

The clerk then looks over Conner's shoulder and calls out, "Next!"

If Conner glances at the paper, he sees the name Reginald Hubert de Montmerancy.

========================================

Walking through Merchant Quarter towards the river, Arm and Mira decide to take the bridge over to the Cathedral of Light and then to Merchant Quarter. As they're walking over the first bridge, they can see the tall figure of Conner making his way through the crowds of devotees.

The trio meet up and make their way to the west bridge. Since they're probably early for meeting up with Kadaz and Shadow, they pause where the bridge exists unto Parade Road. They could simply head up to the tavern, or detour slightly to check out the mansion themselves.

========================================

Shadow and Kadaz keep doing what they were. Kadaz has always found that it's easy to lose track of time while he's gossiping with his former comrades.

Kadaz
Saturday February 11th, 2006 6:26:19 PM

Kadaz looks up suddenly. "By Domi's Beard! I have to be someplace. Sorry guys, have to run." He takes his leave of his former comrades and goes in search of his new ones. He thinks to himself "Arm said meet at the tavern. Come on Birdie, let's find the one he means."

Shadow
Sunday February 12th, 2006 6:45:47 PM

After taking a nap in the afternoon, Shadow will wake up and get ready for the evenings activities. He will run by the Guild to let the Daymaster know what is going to be going on. He tells them it is not a heist, but a return of property. After which he will go to meet up with his companions.

Mira
Sunday February 12th, 2006 11:07:35 PM

Mira will share her information with Conner, and ask the fighter if he has learned anything that might be helpful to the party.

She is both nervous and excited about attending the meeting. "The thiefs' didn't have much information to share about this Bearer's group, so maybe they didn't know much about it themselves." Mira pushes her glasses back up her nose with her forefinger. "I'm assuming our ignorance of their motives won't give us away, but we should stick together and remain on our guard."

The sorcerer addresses her companions. "Should we make up some story about who we are? Should we mention that we are looking for the missing necklace or if we find it, should we try to claim it?"

Arm
Monday February 13th, 2006 7:31:01 AM

Arm says to Mira, "I wouldn't say a word at all about the necklace...one word would almost definitely set them off and against us. I think it best if we are able to slip away unnoticed and find it ourselves.".

Conner  d20+1=4
Monday February 13th, 2006 10:11:22 PM

Conner grunts in agreement with Arm's comment. He unfolds the crumpled piece of parchment bearing the name of Reginald Hubert de Montmerancy and shows it to the group. Rubbing his close cropped head with the palm of his hand, he wonders at the name. Being from Plateau City he tries to recall if he has ever heard the name before. (Local Knowledge=4)

A Good Night for a Bad Table (DM JohnP)
Monday February 13th, 2006 11:03:35 PM

The party gradually moves towards the Blue Ale Tavern, the tavern closest to the mansion where the Bearers of the Chalice will be meeting.

Arm, Mira and Conner are loitering at the western end of the bridge from the Cathedral of Light when the see the short and broad figure of Kadaz approaching. Actually, it's the happy barking of Birdie that tells them their companion is approaching.

The four companions walk north towards Silver Street, the boundary between Wealthy and Gold Quarters. As they walk along Parade Road, with the river to their right, they can admire the stately homes that line the street. At each intersection, they pass a small booth where four armed men loiter. The party can see that each guard has a badge showing a silver sword on a bronze shield.

After passing one of these booths, Shadow slips into step with his companions. When Shadow left the Guild, the Daymaster had shrugged and muttered "Whatever".

The five companions turn onto Silver Street and can see the entrance of the Blue Ale. It's obviously a different class of establishment than Sampson's. For one thing, there is well-dressed but rather imposing man stationed at the front door. When the party arrives at the door, he looks them up and down. Everyone gets the impression that he is evaluating not just their potential for causing mayhem but their net worth. Despite the barely concealed sneer, he manages to be polite.

"You wish to sit together? Are you meeting someone here?"

Not really waiting for a response, the man summons a young elven woman from inside. With a nod towards the party, he instructs her to show them inside. The young elf bobs and leads the party into the tavern. It's not crowded inside as she leads the party past several empty tables. The tavern is cleverly designed so that almost every table has a good view of the stage although several are almost completely shielded from the rest of the tavern. Finally, the elf shows the party to a table at the back of the tavern where only a corner of the stage can be seen. The table is right beside a pair of doors that obviously lead to the kitchen.

The elf then asks, "Would you like something from the bar? I can leave a list if you want to check prices first. Will you be staying for dinner?" She deposits a parchment with a list of beverages and prices on the table. Anyone who glances at it realizes that prices are much more expensive than Sampson's.

The party is able to share what they discovered during their investigations. Conner has never heard of Reginald Hubert de Montmerancy, but the others might have.

Knowledge Local 15 -- Highlight to display spoiler: {A rich nobleman with property both inside and outside the City.}

Knowledge Local 20 -- Highlight to display spoiler: {Montmerancy was known in Plateau City society for the lavish ways he doted on his younger wife. Unfortunately, he died during the Event.}

Mira's and Arm's news that the Bearers of the Chalice is regarded as a Death cult might give the others pause, as might the reputation of the Silver Swords who guard the Weathy Quarter.

Arm  d20=19 d20+11=21
Tuesday February 14th, 2006 5:54:35 AM

Taking a seat next to the door by the kitchen so that he may pick up on something if anyone decides to listen in (listen=21), Arm wracks his brain to see if he may have heard of Reginald. After a bit, he leans in to the others and says, "What what I can recall hearing, Reginald is the owner of several properties both here and outside the city (local knowledge=19). A person that wealthy is more than likely going to surround himself with all types of bodyguards.".

Kadaz  d20+1=5
Tuesday February 14th, 2006 6:31:59 AM

Kadaz can't think of anything relevant so he points out the obvious. "If we get into any sort of trouble in this neighborhood we'll be tossed out so fast and hard we'll bounce all the way to Sampsons." He looks carefully at the list and decides to have an ale, and only one. (local knowledge 5)

"I'm afraid to say it, Mira, but you might be the only one who could bluff her way inside. Maybe the rest of us should be your bodyguards."

Shadow  d20+4=20
Tuesday February 14th, 2006 9:55:26 AM

Shadow almost does not enter the tavern after the rudeness of the man in front. He will try not to stick out too much, but thinks it might be too hard not to. He will take the seat that keeps his back to a wall. Once the group starts sharing he will mutter, "I heard he was killed recently. I also do not think the silver swords have really earned their title, but that is just my humble opinion."

Shadow will stay long enough to hear the groups intentions, but will leave as quickly as possible. He is not comfortable in these surroundings. "I will keep an eye on the house and then will do my own search as you are inside."

Mira  d20+3=13
Tuesday February 14th, 2006 9:37:17 PM

Mira orders a bottle of wine, and asks for a few glasses in order that she might share it with those who are interested. She selects one of the cheaper bottles (if not the cheapest) from the menu. Nodding her head in acknowledgement as each says her piece, she admonishes Shadow to be careful, when he indicates he would rather be 'out and about.'

Mira listens with curiosity as Arm and Kadaz fill her in on what they know of the man who's name was given to Conner. "I wonder if this Lady Ilioia is deMontmorency's widow?"

"Now, do we have a plan?" she enquires. "I'd hate to divide the party, though I know Shadow does just fine on his own." Mira rubs the bridge of her nose in thought. "Okay, hows this," she continues. "Arm, disguise yourself. You'll be my brother if anyone asks. You're my cousin, Conner, and Kadaz is your friend. We all met up after the flood, okay? And, we're here because we were given this paper here," Mira unfolds the parchment provided by the thiefs. We've come to see what the Bearer's of the Chalice are all about."

Conner  d20+1=6 d20-2=9
Tuesday February 14th, 2006 9:49:22 PM

Conner gives it another shot (Knowledge Local=6) but draws a blank when it comes to the name on the piece of parchment. The fighter is uncomfortable in the fancy place with the delicate furnishings and pricey drinks. "Think I'll go outside for a bit of air," he tells his friends.

Outside the Blue Ale Conner tries to strike up a conversation with the man at the door, thinking he might be a kindred spirit. "Kind of fancy for me, he says apologetically," then, in a straighforward manner he asks the bouncer if he knows anything about the Silver Shields and if they might be hiring. If able, he steers the conversation around to the Bearer's of the Chalice. (Diplomacy=9)

Arm
Wednesday February 15th, 2006 6:04:22 AM

Arm chuckles a bit at Kadaz's comments, imagining his friend bouncing like an armored ball through the streets, causing almost as much havoc as the Awakening did.

Turning his attention back to more serious matters, he says to Mira, "I think it'd be best if we let Shadow be the spokesperson. The invitation was found with a thief, so I can only assume that it was MEANT for thieves, and Shadow would be the best among us to perpetrate the charade.". He then looks at Shadow to hopefully back up his theory.

Party Preparations (DM JohnP)
Wednesday February 15th, 2006 9:27:36 PM

The party sits around the table discussing their options. A neatly dressed youth comes by the table and takes Mira's and Kadaz's orders for drinks. The discussion stops when the young man comes back with a bottle and flagon of ale for the dwarf.

At a motion from Mira, he sets glasses on the table and pours for everyone.

The party shares what they have learned about the owner and current occupants of the mansion. Mira suggests one method of gaining entry to the mansion and Arm suggests an alternative. Shadow wants to go in by himself, trusting to his stealth to protect him.

Shadow abruptly gets to his feet and leaves te tavern, indicating that he will be awaiting the party outside the mansion. Not long afterward, Conner also gets restless and goes outside.

As they sit there discussing things, Arm overhears some of the kitchen staff discussing the Bearers. What he can catch of the conversation over the clatter of pots and pans is that two of them intend to go to the meeting after they finish their shifts.

Outside, Conner attempts to strike up a conversation with the door guard. The guard pointedly ignores Conner until he mentions the Silver Swords.

"Never know about that. They lost some boys in the flooding and troubles, might be looking for help. You might fit in, after some polishing." He says this after looking the fighter up and down.

When Conner mentions the Bearers, he gets nothing more than a shrug.

After talking for several more minutes and finishing the bottle, Mira and the remaining two stand up from the table. The youthful waiter quickly appears with the bill and asks for payment. It's pricy, but Mira can get the money together.

Going outside, the three collect Conner and start walking towards the mansion. They aren't the only ones heading in that direction. There are other individuals, pairs and groups heading in the same direction. As they get closer on Mansion Road, they can see the torch lit exterior of the mansion at the address on the invitation. Shadow slides out of the shadows to join with them.

The party can move ahead together to join the small group of people at the entrance. They can see that the guard at the entrance is checking invitations or something similar. Overall, Shadow has seen about 25 people enter while he has been watching. Or the party can choose to do something else.

Mira unfolds the paper she had retrieved earlier from the theives' apartment. It is the parchement the men had called 'the invitation.' "Ready to go inside?" she asks her companions, raising an eyebrow in enquiry.

As the party move closer towards the entry she squints at the bright light coming from the manison (spot=6) but keeps ears open for any useful information(Listen=19).

As he stands by Mira waiting to get in he notices a mark on the gatepost. "Mira, look at this. I think Shadow would be interested in this Guild mark."

The party, except for Shadow, joins the small line of people at the entrance to the mansion. The line moves ahead as the guard checks for invitations. When Mira shows him the slip of paper, he nods and motions the group in. Kadaz, Arm and Conner follow in her wake. From the looks of it, the other people entering have come from most parts of Plateau City - this isn't something simply for people from the wealthy areas.

At the same time, Shadow moves over to a section of wall. He doesn't see anyone watching and the passersby are too intent on the entrance to pay much attention. After a false start, he manages to get over the wall and hide in the darkness at the base of the inner side.

Inside the compund, the carriage drive is illuminated by lanterns hung on short poles on both sides. Pools of light interspersed with shadows fill the grounds. There should be ample opportunity for Shadow to hide. Following the lit pathway, the party (minus Shadow) approaches not the main doors of the house but a large addition. Flickering lights can be easily seen through the large glass windows of this section of the mansion. In front of the party is a short flight of stairs to a wide patio in front of the addition. In the lanternlight it's possible to tell that the steps and stonework are made from the finest of marbles. At the top of the stairs are two more men. The two seem to be greeting people and checking invitations.

At the Door (DM JohnP)
Sunday February 19th, 2006 3:11:27 PM

The two men here on the patio appear to be a little more ... tougher, might be the word ... than the one guard at the gate. Each of them looks at Mira as if trying to judge her worth and capability. Then their eyes move over Kadaz, Arm and Conner in turn. While they don't seem to be fooled, they also don't seem to care overly much that two armored fighters are joining the evening's social event.

The taller of the two nods after taking the invitation.

"You have come to sip from the Chalice and share it's wisdom and mystery. Join us tonight if you wish."

They motion the group forward. When the party crosses the patio to the double doors, they can see a landing inside with a wide staircase descending down into a grand ballroom. Ordinarily, they guess, a majordomo or such would annouce visitors when they arrive but that is not the case tonight. Inside the ballroom, people of all races are clustered in small groups. The center of activity seems to be a tall young woman dressed in and expensive black dress. She is presently moving to greet the expensively dressed people who preceded the pary and there is a cluster of people who trail in her wake.

Standing at the top of the stairs, the party can choose to proceed in whatever fashion they see fit.

========================================

Outside, Shadow continues to crouch in the shadows at the base of the wall. He has seen his companions enter the house through a set of double doors off a patio. From where he is hiding, Shadow can see the two men on the patio. He can also see that servants or other people are moving about inside the house. While most rooms on the main floor are illuminated, the upstairs are dark. With the light from the lanterns at the main door and along the drive, the front of the house is fairly brightly lit.

Mira lifts her chin a little, and meets the gaze of the guards. When her invitation is accepted, she reaches out a hand to rest on the bard's arm.

The sorcerer looks down the stairway, then looks back to the two fighter's behind her. "How about circling the room? Arm and I will cover the left side, you two the right. We'll meet up again at the base of the stairs and compare our findings." Mira looks at the woman dressed in black, "afterwards, we'll pay our respects to 'our hostess'."

Mira will try to take in the details of the art and artefacts that decorate the room. She will keep an eye out for anything the looks like the necklace for which they are searching.

Nodding to Mira, he places his hand on Mira's shoulder and guides her down the steps, all the while scanning the area for any sign of the necklace (listen=29, spot=23, search=20-natural 20).

OOC: Not sure if a search roll would be appropriate, as that would probably draw too much attention to us, but I thought I'd give it a shot. :)

In the Ballroom (DM JohnP)
Monday February 20th, 2006 9:57:05 PM

Most of the party circulates inside the ballroom trying to learn what they can about the Bearers of the Chalice. They don't have time (or privacy) to search anything but they can tell a considerable amount about the house and the gathering.

Mira is too busy making a good impression to be able to notice much. But it's apparent to all but the blind that the people here are from all of the decent Quarters of the City, both wealthy and middle class. Some of the better dressed people are concealing their faces with half-masks or veils but the sorcerer can't tell if this is to disguise their identity or as fashion. Some of these wealthy people stand off to the sides and gossip, casting occasional glances at the recent arrivals.

Conner and Kadaz both notice that their group is attracting attention even though they aren't the only ones bearing arms and armor. There's also a closed set of doors leading to what should be the main part of the house. A smaller door is near the far end of the room and servants are going in and out of it with drinks and snacks.

Arm is more sharp-eyed and he notices one of the men from the patio and another man whispering to the woman dressed in the black.

As they circulate, Arm overhears some snippets of conversation.

"Will there be a ceremony tonight,, do you think? The last one was so exciting! <giggle> <teehee>

"Are you sure about this, Samwise? There's too many fancy people here for the likes of us."

"Not enough, I tell you. Bad as it was, not enough of the lower classes were cleared out by the flooding. We need to restore balance and clean up some of Quarters."

"No elves here, you notice that Mikr? They think they're so high and mighty, above mortal concerns and don't have to fear death."

"Where did she get that dress? Isn't it scandalous?"
"Yes, quite. Reggie not yet cold in the ground and she's flaunting her ... assets ... to these people. Do you know who her dressmaker is?"

"Will it be a full service tonight? Or is this just to recruit?"

The party has almost made it full circle when two men step away from the woman that is the presumed hostess. She turns in the party's direction with an almost predatory smile.

Her voice is calm when she welcomes the party. "Welcome tonight. Have you come to sip from the Chalice? Or on other business?"

========================================

Outside the house, Shadow moves around the estate wall until he finds a spot where the thinks that he can cross unobserved to the house. After watching the guards movements for some time, he determines when it is safest to make it over to the side of the house.

Looking at the house, it's evident that some effort was made in the past to make it safe from burglars. The bricks walls are closely mortared and in good repair and there are no convenient trellises or overhanging trees to allow access to upper floors. The second floor windows are twenty feet above the ground.

Once Shadow has made the crossing, he finds a spot where he can both climb using a chimney for extra support and cover and still come close to a second floor window. When he starts climbing, however, he slips almost immediately.

To make it to the window, either:
a) Two successive DC 20 climb checks, plus a Balance DC 10 check to reach window
b) Two successive DC 25 climb checks

"We have come to watch, listen, and learn, m'lady," Mira lowers her eyes in respect and gives a little curtesy, "to fill an empty cup at the font, as it were." (Diplomacy=19)

The sorcerer will attempt to make a mental sketch of the woman's character as the hostess interacts with the group. (Sense Motive=2) But the well heeled crowd makes her nervous and it takes all of her energies to keep up the false front of invited guest (Bluff=18).

Meeting the Hostess (DM JohnP)
Tuesday February 21st, 2006 9:32:27 PM

Mira and the others stand in front of the hostess. Mira replies that the group is there to participate, as it were.

Arm nods in agreement. While his elven heritage may have been noticed, no one has mentioned anything. Kadaz and Conner silently back up Mira.

The woman smiles again but her motives are a mystery to Mira and the others.

"Welcome," the woman repeats. "I am Lady Ilonia Montmerency, the hostess here. The ceremony is about to begin. I thought that you might be here for another reason, somehow."

========================================

Shadow finds himself in a book-filled study, standing close to a fireplace. A man's study from the looks of the furniture and the ornaments. Still, there seem to be some places where objects have been removed. The room hasn't been abandoned because Shadow can smell the scents of wax and oil used to clean and polish the furniture.

Aside from the window that he entered through, there is a door opposite that presumably exits to the upstairs hallway. The only light in the room comes from under this door. A second window is on the other side of the fireplace. Another door is on the shadowed wall between the window and the door to the hallway.

Due to the previous comments that he overheard regarding elves, Arm is loathe to call more attention to himself than necessary, although he sorely wishes to aid Mira in her negotiations. "There are many lessons one can learn during one's life," demures Mira. "M'lady seems to have been taught by a harsh teacher. My condolences on the loss of your husband." Mira inclines her head in a mark of respect to the woman, "it is said you were well loved." (Diplomacy=20) The sorcerer then courtesies again, expecting the woman will likely move on to her other guests.

Although the woman's comment piques the sorcerer's curiousity, Mira is also interested to see what the ceremony is all about. While she waits for the night's activities, she studies those about her, trying to sense their mood and inclination. (Sense Motive=15)

Ceremony Time (DM JohnP)
Thursday February 23rd, 2006 11:26:08 AM

In the ballroom, the party stands back as the hostess moves to the centre of the room. Her retinue of admirers and hangers-on move with her. She moves in a dramatic way that attracts everyone's attention.

"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for attending this evening. Some of you have been here before and some have not."

"Like many of you, the recent events here in the City left me questioning our place in the Wold. Why do we live and die here? For what purpose do we struggle to survive? Why are our loved ones torn from us? Is there a higher purpose to death?"

"I read many different texts seeking an answer to my questions. And to learn what might await my dear departed husband, Reginald, whom some of you knew so well."

"My search was unsatisfied until I came across some ancient teachings from the days of the founding of the Wold. From a time when those we worship as the Gods of the Wold and Testing were mortal, or not even born yet. Knowledge that has been hidden from the sight of mortal eyes for ages. Knowledge of what Death truly means to mortals."

"This knowledge answered my questions so that Death was no longer a mystery to me. I persuaded those who taught me to come here to Plateau City so that it could be shared with others. Tonight, you will get a glimpse of what the Chalice carries for all."

Lady Ilonia punctuates her speech with gestures and turns so that she looks at everyone in the room. Her motions certainly catch the attention of Conner. Still, Mira detects some degree of falsehood to her words but the sorcerer cannot tell if Lady Ilonia is lying outright or simply not telling all that she knows.

Arm is concentrating more on the crowd than on Lady Ilonia. A hush has fallen over the room but not everyone is equally interested. Some are bored, as if they've seen this before. Others are fearful.

Kadaz is trying to identify potential opponents. Aside from the servants, all of whom seem to be fit young men, only a couple of the guests seem to be threats.

At this point, the servants' door at the end of the room opens. Five people dressed in black from head to toe file through the door. These ... some of these might be threats.

The third man in the group carries a heavy stone chalice. He carries it reverently to the center of the room and places it on the floor. Lady Ilonia joins the five and they form a circle about the chalice.

==========================================

Upstairs, Shadow cannot find anything too peculiar in the library. It's a very comprehensive library of books that mainly concern sailing craft and butterflies. There's an extensive collection of mounted butterflies in one of the cabinets.

When Shadow goes to the hallway door, he finds that it is locked.

During the speech, Arm concentrates on those in the crowd who seem to fear what the Lady is saying in an attempt to discern why, but as he tries to listen to the speech as well, he finds that he is distracted (spot=5, listen=28). As the Lady speaks, he finds himself, like Conner, resting his hand on his sword.

OOC: ADM Scott
Saturday February 25th, 2006 4:10:21 PM

I am waiting to hear from Mira before posting. (hopefully tonight-Saturday)

Mira  d20+3=17 d20+2=14 d20+7=16
Sunday February 26th, 2006 10:08:55 AM

Having drawn the attention of their host, Mira does not wish to keep it. She tries to blend in with the crowd and suggests the others do the same. "We don't want to be singled out and distracted from the task at hand." (Hide=17)

Mira recognizes the importance of following through on their mission, and trying to locate the neclace, but the sorcerer is intrigued by the unfolding events. She wonders if the Bearers are just fakers (as some have reported) or if there is more going on than anyone suspects.

The woman scans the crowd to see if she recognizes anyone of real importance from the city, her eyes ready to pick up anything that resembles the necklace the party seeks, (Spot=14) and her ears attuned to whispered conversation (Listen=16).

The Ceremony Continues (DM JohnP)
Sunday February 26th, 2006 4:22:07 PM

The circle of black clad cultist stand around the stone chalice placed in the centre of the ballroom. After a moment, they begin to mutter a short prayer and then link hands.

The party has slowly moved back to the wall and their attention is more on the other members of the assembled crowd than on the cultists. Looking about, Mira doesn't see anyone that would be considered a notable person in the City. As Arm and Kadaz look around, they can tell that the audience has roughly three different reactions. There are a number of people clearly uncomfortable, including a pair who are making for the doors right now. Most people seem politely interested. And there are a few who seem to hang on the words of the cultists.

Conner thinks back on Lady Ilonia's words and what the cultists are muttering about now. He senses that nothing is an outright deception but probably not everything is being said.

None of the party are trained in religious studies so they can't really tell much about what the service means. Still, it seems quite different than what they might have heard when they attended a service at the Temple of Gargul.

Mira and Arm both catch a whispered comment "that this is just for show, to see who might be interested."

========================================

Shadow manages to open the lock after taking some time to do so. When he eases the hallway door open he can peek out into the brightly lit hallway. Right now, no one is in the hallway. He can see ten or twelve other doors on this level in addition to a staircase that leads down to the main floor. All of the doors are closed and three lamps are lighting the hallway.

Please make Listen and Move Silently checks if entering the hallway. Hiding from someone else in the hallway is not possible due to the absence of cover or concealment.

As quietly as he can, Arm whispers to Mira, "I think it best if we don't make ourselves TOO inconspicuous, as that may MAKE us so. From what I've seen, I can't see the necklace here anywhere. Let's hope Shadow has better luck upstairs.". He then feigns interest in the proceedings as he keeps an eye and ear on the crowd (spot=8, listen=19).

The Ceremony Concludes (DM JohnP)
Monday February 27th, 2006 11:07:13 PM

The party maintains their cool composure as the ceremony continues. After the prayers and pronouncements before, Lady Ilonia now turns and addresses the crowd again.

"There great certainty in life is Death. From the moment that any living thing is born, Death awaits them. Death collects everyone and everything into its embrace."

"Most people fear Death because they do not know what to expect. What if that veil of ignorance was removed? What if people could know what awaits them? What then?"

"That is the gift of the Chalice -- foreknowledge. The veil of ignorance will slip aside for those who sip from the Chalice. What would you choose to do?"

"I will not lie to you -- no one has complete knowledge after just one sip. But with time all of you, like I did, can gain knowledge of what lies behind the veil."

"Do any of you choose to sip from the Chalice?"

After her speech, Lady Ilonia waits expectantly. Some people move forward, including all of those who seemed familiar with the Chalice. Others stand quietly around the room, not disclosing their reasons for not joining in.

============

Shadow tries the nearest door and finds that it is locked. The second door along the hallway is unlocked, however. He eases the door open and slips into a sitting room fitted with a pair of comfortable chairs and a low table. There are two closed doors in this room. The nearer one is locked and Shadow thinks that it might lead to the same room that had the locked hallway door.

The other door is unlocked, however. When Shadow tries it, he can smell expensive musk perfume from the room. In the low light of a small lamp, he can see a richly appointed woman's bedroom. There is a large bed, several chests and cabinets and a small desk or table with an expensive mirror. Some other doors lead from this room.

Arm
Tuesday February 28th, 2006 5:55:11 AM

Arm looks expectantly at Mira, wondering if she is willing to partake of the Chalice. Whether or not she is, he heads to take his place in line with the rest, reasoning that perhaps he may find some surcease for himself.

Kadaz
Tuesday February 28th, 2006 8:32:21 PM

Kadaz can't bring himself to participate in this travisty. It's clear to him that this person is preying on the fears of people with an intent to cheat them down the line. The frown on Kadaz's face gets longer.

Mira
Tuesday February 28th, 2006 10:04:50 PM

The sorcerer is mesmerized by the ceremony and the diverse reactions that is wrought on the assembled group. Deep in her brain there is a nagging suspicion the party may have followed a false lead in their search for Fendrick's necklace.

Just the same, Mira keeps her place, her eyes transfixed on the chalice. She is startled to see Arm line up with those who would drink from it.

Conner
Tuesday February 28th, 2006 10:08:16 PM

The fighter nudges Kadaz and inclines his head towards the nearest exit. "Get some air?" he enquires. Conner will try to find a door or window that is open to the out-of-doors.

Just a Sip (DM JohnP)
Tuesday February 28th, 2006 10:35:12 PM

The ceremony has concluded and more people move forward to join the group ready to drink from the chalice. Conner and Kadaz are not impressed at all by the ceremony. Conner looks about for an exit but the only one that he can see are the doors that the party entered by.

Mira watches the crowd to see how many people take up the offer. Not everyone does, and Conner and Kadaz aren't the only ones looking for the exits.

Arm joins the crowd waiting for a sip. The largest of the men dressed in black lifts the chalice in both hands, holding it out for people to drink. It seems rather difficult to hold and tip the heavy stone chalice so that people can drink from it.

The first person in line is Lady Ilonia, of course. She manages to look graceful as she takes a small sip from the chalice. Mira catches a moment when the woman's facade slips and an unreadable expression crosses her face. Others who sip from the chalice seem momentarily unaware, as if they are seeing things that are not present.

Shortly, Arm is near the front and can either move ahead or slip away.

========================================

Shadow takes the time to properly search the woman's bedroom. He finds a number of interesting things - evidentally, Lady Ilonia (since this is probably her room) hasn't spent much time mourning the death of her husband. She has expensive taste in clothing even though quite a bit of could not be worn outside of this room, at least in polite company.

All the while Shadow keeps an ear peeled for the sounds of people in the hallway. He hears nothing, however.

Finally, Shadow finds a small locked box in a drawer of the small desk. He judges that the box contains jewelry from the size, weight and the way the contents move. Examining the box, he thinks that it's a good lock on it.

The Taste (DM JohnP)
Wednesday March 1st, 2006 11:22:51 PM

The line moves ahead and after a moment Arm is at the front. The man dressed in black hefts the chalice up and holds it for Arm to drink from.

Arm tips his head forward and places his lips on the rim of the chalice. It's surprisingly cold, colder than room temperature. The liquid, though, is body temperature and thick. The taste is difficult to describe ... musky, sweet and both pleasant and faintly nauseating. Arm suspects that the taste of this liquid will be on his tongue for days.

Arm straightens after drinking and stares blankly for a moment. His companions see nothing more than that.

Arm only - Highlight to display spoiler: {For just a moment, you are standing in the middle of a grey and black plain. Shifting dingy grey sand or mud is under your feet and it's a struggle to keep your footing. Despite the lack of illumination in this place, you can see that the plain eventually ends and bare stone hills rise above the short grey dunes. Behind you, a moon is rising and shadows of light are stretching across the ground. Suddenly, you get a sense that something is searching for you ... and there is nowhere to hide on this barren plain.}

Conner and Kadaz keep watching Arm. To their eyes, nothing has happened. At least, no convulsions or frothing at the mouth. Mira stands silently, not really believing that one of her companions would drink from the chalice.

Arm is nearly the last person to drink. When the last person does, the man holding the chalice passes it to two others. The entire group of men and women return back through the servants' door where they entered the ballrom from.

In the post-ceremony confusion all the other attendees are milling about. Lady Ilonia remains in the ballroom and speaks to many of the people who sipped from the chalice. In time, she makes her way over to where Arm and the party are standing.

Looking at Arm, she asks, "Did you receive a vision when you drank from the chalice?"

Not waiting for his reponse, she turns to the others. "Did you come to watch your friend? Or did you come here for some other purpose, as someone whispered to me?"

========================================

Upstairs, Shadow fails to open the box. He doesn't hear anyone moving in the hallway. If he sits down and takes his time, he could probably open the box. Does he have time to do so? Or should he simply take the entire box and open it elsewhere?

You can Take 20, if you choose. Or, the box dimensions are listed above.

Thursday March 2nd, 2006 5:58:42 AM

Shaken by the vision, Arm returns slowly to the group, silently cursing himself for taking part in the ceremony, "Instead of answers," he thinks, "I now have more questions.".

When the Lady questions him, he can only nod in affirmation. As she questions the rest of the group, Arm tries to concentrate on the situation, but wishing that Uriel was still around to provide him with someone he could talk to, as this type of thing seems to be something he'd have insight on.

He will try and relock the door, and move very close to the window. "It's true, our purpose here is not to participate in the ceremony, but we did not wish to disrupt these events." Conner fidgits slightly at the woman's directness. "We seek a necklace that we believe was stolen from an old man and then sold to you... it was all that he had left to remind him of his wife and family who were killed in the flooding and it's aftermath. He is truly distraught without it."

The burly fighter looks hopefully at Lady Ilonia for some sign that his forthrightness has allayed any misgivings she might have [Diplomacy=18 - not bad for a farmer's son turned adventurer!]

Confrontation (DM JohnP)
Thursday March 2nd, 2006 11:07:50 PM

Conner decides that honesty is the best policy and stops trying to disguise why the party is there. Lady Ilonia looks directly back at him and answers.

"That? I'm sure that I have a bill of sale for that someplace. Why should I be concerned with a merchant's loss, when soon enough all of us will embrace the chalice. If it's so important to him, have someone call on me tomorrow and we can negotiate a fair price."

Then she walks away with her collection of hangers-on trailing behind her. Arm is still a little dazed or distracted by the vision that he experienced after sipping from the chalice.

Kadaz and Mira look at the retreating back of the hostess and quietly wonder how this will turn out.

Shadow silently slips back into the library where he entered the house. He does hear someone moving in the downstairs but is able to keep away from the staircase and thinks that he was unseen.

After taking several minutes working on the small lock, Shadow hears a satidfying *click* as the tumblers slip into place. The lid lifts slightly as the lock releases.

In the partial darkness of the library, Shadow cannot tell with any certainty what is inside the box. He sees the glint of jewelry inside and hears the quiet sound of metal sliding over metal. However, there is at least one other thing in the box that isn't jewelry.

Slowly regaining his senses, Arm waits until Ilonia departs, then looking aghast at Conner, says, "That was a close one. It's a good thing we're not fighting for our lives right now. We were already suspect, and now probably even more so. Let us take our leave of this place and hope that Shadow has had some luck upstairs.".

Kadaz

Kadaz looks at Conner and then whispers to Mira. "I vote we get out of here. I suspect her guards are going to pay us a visit soon."

Shadow will move ove to the door and listen to see if there is any activity in the hallway. If he does not hear anything he will crack the door open to see what is actually in the box. (Listen=20 and move silently=15)

Waiting for more posts.

Conner
Saturday March 4th, 2006 12:26:23 AM

"Thank you Ma'am" the big fighter stammers, We'll come around again tomorrow when it's more convenient". He bows ever so slightly as she turns and walks away.

Mira
Sunday March 5th, 2006 8:54:57 PM

Mira blinks. The sorcerer is taken aback at the fighter's forthrightness. She nods when the bard suggests the party take their leave. "Lead on," she answers, wrapping a hand about Arm's upper arm. Looking around the room and trying to collect the party with a direct gaze and an inclination of her head towards the door she moves towards the nearest exit.

Time to Leave (DM JohnP)
Sunday March 5th, 2006 10:39:07 PM

Arm and Kadaz both counsel departing, especially after Lady Ilonia's direct words. How ever could she have known that the party would be attending?

Conner and Mira join up with the other two party members and make their way to the exit. Before they depart, Conner confirms that the party will return on the following day.

When the party has climbed the stairs and exited onto the patio, they see that nothing has changed. There are still two guards or servants here. The two men are engaged in quiet conversation and don't pay particular attention to the party. From the looks of things, Shadow has not been discovered either on the grounds or in the house.

Mira looks back from the patio and glimpses someone inside the room that she didn't expect to see.
Mira - Highlight to display spoiler: {During your survey of the room, you glimpse one of the thieves who had originally stolen the necklace. You have no idea where he was hiding until this moment.}

The party crosses the patio and descends the stone steps. The lanterns are still burning beside the path to light your way to the street. When you reach the gate, the man working there nods his head as the four party members exit. Outside the mansion's grounds, the people walking or riding in carriages on the street are oblivious to the cult gathering inside.

========================================

Shadow moves back to the doorway and opens it a crack after hearing nothing outside. He opens the jewelry box and sees an assortment of gems and precious metals inside. One of the pieces matches the necklace that Fendrik Vaeder described. There are at least three other necklaces, several rings and other items of jewelry inside the box. There is also a small silk bag that seems to contain powder or something like that.

While Shadow is examining the contents of the box, he overhears two men speaking from the downstairs.
Shadow - Highlight to display spoiler: {"All the arrangements are made for tomorrow?

"Yes. My payment is ready?"

"Yes it is. You'll get it when the job is done."

After they leave the compound, Arm heaves a sigh of relief and moves the hand that was hovering over his sword to hold Mira's hands that are gripping his other arm, "Well, we've made is thusfar, now where shall we await Shadow? Did we tell him we'd meet up at the inn afterward?".

As carefully as he can, he scans the area to see if anyone is paying them any undue attention (spot=23, listen=24).

Shadow will pocket the necklace and then relock the box. He will check out in the hallway to see if it is still clear for him to return the box. If it is clear he will move back down the hallway to the room he found it in. He will put the box back where he got it, and then get back to the library. (He really wishes he could see who was talking below, but cannot risk it.) (Listen X2=11,22 Move Silent X2=18,26)

Conner leaves the ceremony and the grounds of Lady Ilonia's estate. He pauses at the guard station out front and engages one of them in a conversation. "Where did you say the Silver Swords are headquartered? I find myself out of work and I have some military training..." [Bluff (15) to distract the guards from paying attention to the exterior of the house and Shadow should he try and slip out.]

Mission Accomplished? (DM JohnP)
Monday March 6th, 2006 11:14:06 PM

The party, minus Shadow, assemble in the street outside Lady Ilonia's mansion. Arm looks around but no one is paying particular attention. The guard at the gate is paying more attention to other people leaving the mansion and everyone else simply seems to be passing by.

Kadaz commits the property to memory, somehow confident that they will be returning.

Conner tries to engage the gate guard in conversation and manages to elicit some interest but realizes that this guard is never going to study magic ... or any other scholarly pursuit.

"The Swords? They got guard stations everywhere, don't they? Like right there, 'cross the street. I like their uneeforms, I think I might see 'bout that too."

Mira is silently pondering the next steps for the party.

========================================

Shadow successfully returns the box to it's original hiding place in the woman's bedroom and returns to the library. However, he can't seem to make any progress climbing down.

He's been upstairs for some time and, looking out the window, he can see that people are starting to leave the gathering. It can only be a matter of time before people start returning to the main part of the house.

Two Climb DC 20 checks required to climb down, or one DC 15 Jump check to eliminate any lethal damage.

Mira starts as she recognizes one of the thieves. She grips Arm a little tighter. Once the party is outside, she whispers, "I'm pretty sure one of the thieves from the apartment was here." Her green eyes are wide, "I didn't see him at first, but caught sight of him just as we left." The sorcerer frowns and makes a face, "I don't know if he recognized any of us though."

As they leave the premises, she adds, "It seems a pleasant enough night. Lets just take our time." In a low whisper she adds, "Shadow can take care of himself, but if we make slow progress, he may catch up to us. It would be better if we were to stick together."

The woman uses the time to ask Arm to tell her more about what happened when he drank from the chalice. She tries to compare what he tells her with her knowledge of alchemy and arcana.

Arm grimaces at Mira, "Well, that would explain how the lady was suspect of our attendance.". His eyes then take on a steely glaze as he scans the departing crowd for signs of the thief (spot=17). If he doesn't see him, he will continue on slowly with Mira and the rest of the group, taking her hand in his and wondering if she's starting to have some feelings for him. In a soft voice (he'll tell the others later), he tells her of his desert vision, emphasizing the part about someone searching for him, "I feel this does not bode well for me, and I would dearly like another drink from the chalice to see if I can learn more.".

If he DOES see the thief, he'll ask the party if they should follow him and "take care of business".

Meeting Up (DM JohnP)
Tuesday March 7th, 2006 10:52:49 PM

The party is standing outside Lady Ilonia's mansion discussing what to do. Mira mentions seeing one of the thieves from earlier in the day. Arm scans the other people now leaving the mansion but he does not see anyone that recognizes.

Mira is thinking about what Arm described. The visions could be the effects of some drugs or mild poisons. Or the chalice could be a magical artifact. The chalice and the liquid would have to be studied in an alchemical or magical laboratory to determine exactly how or why it works.

While everyone is still standing outside the mansion, Shadow casually joins them. He can't keep a satisfied smile from his face as he does so.

Discretion being the better course, everyone starts walking together before discussing anything further. No one has a destination in mind yet, but there are several options available.

Conner

Conner thanks the guard for his information and departs along with Mira and Arm. He silently nods at Shadow when he rejoins them, and sets out towards Sampsons and home.

Shadow joins the party and signals with his head to get going. he does have a satisfied grin on his face as the group moves off. He will not say anything until the group reaches Sampsons or the apartment. (spot=17, listen=23)

Kadaz
Wednesday March 8th, 2006 5:12:08 PM

Kadaz's head whips around quickly at what he hears. "Mira, did you say that those thieves, who we warned to leave town immediately, are in there? I think we need to escort them out of this city." Kadaz thoughtfully taps the haft of his axe on the ground as he contemplates what has to be done. "Let's find a dark spot to watch this gate from" he advises.

Mira
Wednesday March 8th, 2006 5:22:55 PM

Mira nods to Shadow when the rogue joins the party, and starts off down the road. "Nay," she says to the dwarf, "it seems we have what we came for and it would be best that we get it stowed safely."

Home ... Safe and Sound (DM JohnP)
Wednesday March 8th, 2006 9:48:22 PM

Once he hears that Mira saw one of the thieves, Kadaz wants to wait to further explain his opinions. Mira, however, counsels discretion at this time. After, from the smirk on Shadow's face, it's only a matter of time before Lady Ilonia realizes that something is missing.

So Conner leads off through the streets with Arm keeping watch on everyone.

As the party moves through the late evening streets of Plateau City they are reminded of the disparities in the City. The streets around Lady Ilonia's mansion in the Wealthy Quarter are well-lit and patrolled by the Silver Swords. Kadaz and Conner don't seem any members of the Guard until they are nearly to the bridge across to the Temple of Light. Thay are among the poorest dressed of the people walking on thr streets and they see nobody loitering. There are few signs of the damage caused by the flooding and other events when the Fey King awoke.

Once they are over the river and into Merchant Quarter, the streets are emptier but still well-lit. Everyone moves purposefully and the party sees several Guard patrols. Fortunately, Kadaz is recognized by most of them and the party is detained or asked embarassing questions.

Guild Quarter is darker and they are now travelling on only the major streets. They are nearly back to the Trade Quarter when they see a group of people outside a house. When they get closer, they can hear shouts of "Elves out now!", "Back to the trees!" and "Betrayers Out!". But they can't see Fendrik Vaeder among the members of the Plateau City Defense League who are demonstrating.

Once they are in the Trade Quarter, the signs of the damage from the Fey King's awakening are evident almost everywhere. Crossing Open Palm Market, they can see a group of people standing near the bridge. The group looks towards the party but some of them remember their last encounter.

Finally, they arrive near their apartment and Sampson's. It's been a while since their short stay at the Blue Ale Tavern so everyone decides to go into Sampson's, at least for a little while.

Once they step inside the door, the familiar scents and sounds of Sampson's wash over them. Inside here, it's possible to forget that anything has happened outside. Still, it's a slow evening here so the party has their choice of tables.

After everyone agrees on where to sit, they do so and one of the servers is there to take their order. It's the new one, the man that Sampson said was a refugee from Floating City. The man doesn't smile but he takes their orders and quickly returns with the drinks.

Everyone has a chance to share what they learned in Lady Ilonia's mansion and to make plans for the following day.
