The maps have been divided evenly between The Chosen of Domi and the party led by the half elf named Gilia. Impatient, the mixed party strikes off before the taurs, who excited over their map and ruse of the false map effect a somewhat disorganized departure. Zeoll discerns the box that held the maps is nothing more than what it appears. He stows the 5 maps left in his care as Brahmah takes charge of the magical map. The trail is clear in front of clopping hooves and padding paws, but it is hard to see far ahead, and the group soon find themselves outpaced by the other group of adventurers.
(OOC: Brahmah, need a survival check vs DC 15 (see previous DM post). If made, you are with Ban Maeve and Zeoll, if not, you are off the trail and possibly lost.)
Ban Maeve and Zeoll stop when they realize not all are close at hand. Looking behind them, they catch the flash of light in the dimness of the forest shadows when a lost Flat-Top draws his weapon and the metallic rattle of weaponry as Toros, now off the path, arms himself. A bone chilling howl comes from very close. (Flat Top, Toros, Gecktar, Wisdom Check DC 10, Zeoll and Ban Maeve DC 5 to recognize the sound as coming from the party's newest member, Winderglade!)
Meanwhile, Winterglade hears nothing but the echo of his own wild call.
Listen vs DC 24 to Highlight to display spoiler: { hear the crack of a twig as if something is stalking through the forest} and Spot vs DC 21 to Highlight to display spoiler: {notice a slinking blue-black creature with glowing green eyes disappear into the undergrowth.}

Winterglade can't see any members of the party, but his ears catch something [Listen 25, Spot 19]. He turns around, but sees nothing. Almost instinctively his hand reaches behind and comes back with his shield, which the centaur straps on with a metallic <snap>.
If Winterglade can hear the drumming of Zeoll then he will run in that direction at full speed. Otherwise he will stand still, keeping very quiet, and trying to spot or hear whomever/whatever it was that caused the noise he heard.
Flat-top recognizes the voice of Winterglade,(wis 18) About to shout at him when he also hears Zeoll voice not too far from the lost Centaur.
Flat-top Just about to yell at the both of them, "Do. . .?" when he hears a "SNAP!" (Listens 25) he quickly turn, to see a pare of Glowing Green Eyes with a body the color of Blue-black, Quickly slinking away in the undergroth.
Flat-top qutckly call to his friends, Zeoll! Glade! Don't Move! We are being Staked! I think I know the direction to where you are! I'll be right there!"

Winterglades mournful howl brings an immediate response. Two long tentacles snake out from the underbrush and lash at the noisy centaur. The first slaps harmlessly at the foliage about his head, while the second strikes him across the neck, leaving a series of deep cuts across his flesh [Hit AC =16 and 26 for 8 HP -- note that Wintergalde is flatfooted this round]. The tentacles retract into the dense underbrush just as quickly as they struck leaving the wounded centaur to wonder where they came from [Spot vs DC 27 to see which square the creature is in. If you fail, roll a d3 to correctly guess which of three squares]. Twenty feet to the northwest of the embattled centaur, a small greyish orb with a large central eye and several smaller stalked eyed descends as if on a cushion of air and fixes 'Glade' in his icy stare [Will save vs DC 16 or be stunned for l round]. Winterglade believes he recognizes the smaller of the two beholders that ran the auction in the cave, the subservient one.
Both Flat-Top and Zeoll spot a shadowy shape approximately 10 feet long moving through the underbrush between them. The whemic slides his drum from it's normal resting place and begins to play, each note subtly different than the one preceding it as the bard strikes different parts of the taut surface. A feline-shaped head rises above the undergrowth and two glowing green eyes fixate on Zeoll . Two long tentacles rise above the creature's head and gently move with the beat of the music.
Ban Maeve, Gecktar, Bramah and Toros all hold their ground, wondering what is going on and where exactly their friends are. All can hear Zeoll's drum, Winterglade's howling, and the warning yelled by Flat-top and each can determine the general direction the different sounds are emanating from, but dense trees and undergrowth prevent them from seeing each other.

Zeoll (AC18 HP53) d20+10=13 Thursday March 9th, 2006 11:55:00 PM
Zeoll tries to send a secret message to Flat-top, weaving his maening into the music and motions of his body -- but he fails to get his meaning across (Bluff 13). So the liontaur simply whispers in Tauric to Flat-top, "Go help the otherrs! Leave this one to me!"
Zeoll continues to play and fascinate the creature.

Irritated with all these happening around him and standing alone, what Toros could think first is finding or being found by his friends. Now the taller and bigger Taur hopes to see, and be seen better, and starts moving to the direction where he estimates that his friends would be.

But insted he will move south toward Winterglade howling cries, he hears the drums of Zeoll, but according to his drum call He's north of him, He'll head south as far as his fifty feet (and rock and Trees)will let him go.
Flat-top has his morning star in hand, it's more flexable than a sword and does as much damages. On his arm he has his shield as he advances. Now Flat-top will take no chanses, He'll will serch around and Look where's he going in this tricky woods.
OOC: Flat-top has no enermy to attack just now... And Tunc is about 80' away from him, so I don't think the ce3ntaur can see him yet.

Winterglade manages to shake off the stare of the lesser beholder [Will 22], but he almost wishes he hasn't - the aberration is not a pleasant thing to look at, especially in full daylight. "By the holy polka-dot pants of Flower, I have never seen anything as hideous before, and I have treated several cases of advanced leprosy, too!"
After taking a quick look around he dashes north, figuring that this is the general direction where the music of Zeoll's drum is coming from [move action: walk to M16]. Then he almost bumps into Flat-Top.
"Ware, Chosen! Eye things on the prowl!"
Not particularly looking forward to being treated to another tentacle lash, Winterglade draws a sign of anvil on his chest with his finger, invoking a simple protective incantation [spontaneous casting: Sanctuary over Silence].

Zeoll continues his drumming in an attempt to continue holding the strange creature in a trance. Much to his consternation, Brahmah casts his entangle spell, hoping to further impede the beast. Alas, the casting of the spell breaks the trance and the strange cat-like creature lets out a growl and with two swift bounds, escapes the immediate area of vegetation that grasps at it's hind quarters. [Reflex 18 to avoid entanglement -- Moves to S-17].
The same creature lashes out at the captain with one of it's tentacles, narrowly missing the huge Minotaur [hit AC=24(miss)].
Toros enlarges himself in hope of being better seen, and crashes northeast through the underbrush, closing on Winterglade and the others. Branches lash at his bulk as he barrels through the trees. He is at first relieved when he converges with Gecktar and Flat-top, but can only wonder as Winterglade runs right by, snorting about some kind of 'eye thing'. Gecktar is the first to notice the small beholder as it hovers just beneath the canopy of the trees, and casts his spell. The glowing weapon strikes at the beholder, slicing off one of it's tentacles and bringing forth a shriek of pain.
The beast that had attacked Winterglade takes a swipe at the centaur as he charges north [Hit AC=24; miss] and then takes two more swings at Flat-top as he comes into view through the undergrowth Hit AC=23 (miss) and 28 for 5 HP].
The injured beholder drifts slightly to the north and with a rapid burst, targets each of the three remaining Taurs in quick succession. The first ray strikes Toros [Inflict moderate woundsHit AC(Touch) ; for 22 HP - Will Save vs DC 16 to take ½ damage]. The second ray blazes wildly over Flat-top's head [Hit AC=8 miss]. The final black ray, streaks towards Gecktar and seems to encircle him in a dark aura [Hit AC 18 (Touch), Ray of exhaustion, Fort Save vs DC 16 to only be fatigued for 7 minutes -- see PHB P. 308 for details] .
"He had no right" hisses the small beholder, "He had no right to sell it all".
[OOC: Given that an Entangle spell has a radius of 40 feet, I figure the effect includes both Zeoll and the Beholder. See map below.]
Zeoll gasps as grasses and vines try to entangle him. Zeoll's reflex save is a 7, and he is held fast! Oh, the ignomy! Him, a druid, trapped in an entangle!
There's not much for poor Zeoll to do now, so he sings a song designed to inspire courage in his pals. [Bardic Inspire Courage gives all a +1 damage and attack.]

"Hold that dying bit for a moment, will you, furball?"
Just like Zeoll, Winterglade gets caught up in the writhing mass of enspelled plants. With great difficulty he manages to pull himself out of the enspelled area; there is a yelp of pain and the centaur realizes that he is leaving behind a better part of his tail [Ref save 12, I assume DC was 11, Jay?]
"Remind me to miss your next spellcasting show, Capt'n."
Winterglade moves south to join the group facing the gauth [move action: walk to M21]. The big Taur cannot escape from the sudden ray of the eye thing but maintains his composure, reducing the amount of the received damage (wisdom 18). If it would be up to him, or only he would be hurt, Toros could stand still for a moment, hoping to find another way except fight... However when the rays target Flat-top and others, the liontaur immediately reacts with his readied arrow (AC, 22) to shoot the one that tries to hurt them. Leaving the composite shortbow, the masterwork arrow becomes smaller, although the additional force from the bigger size is still reflected on its velocity. (damage, 7 with +5 strength and +1 masterwork damage?)
"Glad to see you Gecktar, Glade, and Flat-top, are you allright? And, do you think the mirrors from Flat-top could be useful now?"
Then, taking a step to the backside of the tree on his South, as if he could use it for cover with his now huge size, Toros puts his bow back, getting ready for close action.

An embarrassed Zeoll quickly adapts to his predicament and the beat of the drum takes on a different tempo, inspiring The Chosen to hold firm against their foes. Winterglade does not react in time as the vegetation springs up around him and pulls at his withers. [OOC this is the Culverwood, a semi-sentient forest. Those that seek to animate the plant life should do so with caution].
Flat-top awaits his opportunity to strike, choosing to touch his wand to the passing Winterglade. [OOC I have Flat-top at M25 -- quite far from Brahmah]. The enlarged Toros targets the beholder with his bow, striking the creature in the middle of it's body and draws a malevolent stare from the floating orb. Brahmah attacks the cat like creature, striking with two of his slashes [AC=18]...or does he...one of the blades seems to go right through the creature without damaging it! [OOC all attacks suffer a 50% miss chance against these creatures -- please roll a D100 for each attack and beat 50% to hit].
With Toros behind cover, the large central eye of the beholder opens once again and a faint shimmering wave erupts in a cone, enveloping both Gecktar and Flat-Top [Will Save Vs DC 16 or be stunned for one round]. The beholder then fires another ray at Flat-Top. A line of fire shoots from one of the tentacled eyes striking the centaur and scorching it's flesh and mane [Hit AC=19 Touch for 14 HP]. A second tentacled eye targets Gecktar and a wave of tiredness strikes the Minotaur [Will Save vs DC 16 or fall asleep]. The tentacles of the six-legged cat-creature lash out at the smoldering Flat-Top and both narrowly miss their target [Hit AC=24 and 24 -- close call]. The second of the two cats attacks Brahmah and the tentacles rake across the captain [Hit AC=26 and 30 for 7 and 8 HP].

An enraged Toros steps from behind his tree and runs at the beholder, glaive in hand. The displacer beast slaps at him with a tentacle as he passes by [Hit AC=24 for 9 HP], scarring the liontaur's flank.
[OOC Toros has too many things going on, cannot take a 5' step and then charge, cannot rage and tumble as tumble is a dex based skill, cannot rage, charge and fight defensively all in one action as by definition rage and charge describe reckless abandon and not defensive fighting, therefor Toros can rage and take a normal move and single attack but cannot escape the AoO and his AC is reduced by both size and rage]
Toros' glaive barely manages to hit the beholder [Beholder AC=22], but the weapon's massive size causes considerable damage [OOC normal attack = +7 +2 rage, +1 inspire]
Flat-Top also moves in on the beholder with his morningstar [I'll assume you made the DC vs 16 to not be stunned but please roll saves in future], but because the beast is hovering just below the base of the tree canopy, the centaur can only waive his morningstars futily in the air. [OOC beholder is 20'or so in the air]. He stomps his hooves in anger at the floating orb. [OOC Ceil please check your character sheet, the morningstars do 2d6+7 damage and you need to re-roll your attacks to confirm criticals in future]
Ban Maeve's shot distracts the displacer beast attacking Brahmah, providing him the moment to change direction and race over to the beholder, but he too cannot reach the eye tyrant as it rides it's cushion of air just above and out of reach of the Minotaurs massive horn. A single tentacle swipes out at him as he passes by but misses.
Winterglade just manages to rip free from the writhing vegetation and leaves Zeoll to sing his inspiring verse.
Gecktar remains where he was, presumably stunned by the beholders central eye.
The beholder, for his part, focuses his entire attention on the raging liontaur with the huge glaive. A dark ray erupts from one of the eye tentacles and heads for Toros, enveloping him in it's deadly aura [inflict moderate wounds Hit touch AC=16 for 15 HP damage, Will save vs DC 16 for half damage]. A second tentacle swings to target the liontaur and a wave of tiredness sweeps over Toros [Ray of exhaustion Hit touch AC 23, Fort save vs DC 16 to only be fatigued.
The two displacer beasts focus in on the centaur prancing about below the beholder. The first cat misses Flat-Top with both tentacles [Hit AC 18 and 16] but the second cat strikes cleanly [Hit Ac=29 for 7 HP]

Raged and enlarged Toros tries to resist the attacks of the beholder (27 and 16 for the fort and will saves), and respond with his glaive, although his actions are less effective this time (AC 11, miss). Desperately he will rely on his paws for one last chance, if either beholder or any of the displacer beasts is at his 'enlarged' reach (AC 21, if any hit, 15 hp damage.), while taking a step, if this would give him any advantage (for instance, for flanking with Flat-top or Glade against any of the opponents? Sorry to write such openended but do not have the map)
Then, Winterglade comes like an angel to his help, healing Toros almost perfectly. 'Glade' can notice the appreciation in the eyes of the barbarian, even in a moment of rage like this.
(Can't Toros rage and fight defensively at the same time..?)

(OOC sorry for missing so many posts. But I've made one that was not saved ??? Maybe I failed to submit it, not sure of what happened.)
When Gecktar is struck by the first ray he felt his energy flowing outside of him but he manage to keep some (Save 26 only fatigued). the second ray take him by surprise and the only thing he was able to do was shaking his head to stay in the fight (Save 14 = stunned). Then the third ray hit him but he focuses his will and stay awake.
He then entones a prayer to Domi so as to help him and his fellows during this fight.
(cast prayer : +1 luck bonus to attack, damage, saves and skill check for allies within 40ft radius ; enemies are at -1)
The hammer continue to fight by himself : hit AC17 for 4 damage
Zeoll (AC18 HP53) (Inspired, Entangled) d20+1=12 Wednesday March 15th, 2006 10:10:04 PM
Zeoll tries again to win free of the plants. Str check 12.
Oh, let me brreak out of this vine! Oh, frree me frrom this living jail! Oh, why, plant, do you so entwine? Alas! My feeble muscles fail!
Well, the words may not be very inspirational, but the melody is what does the trick, really! :-)
Ban Maeve [AC=19, HP=43] Wednesday March 15th, 2006 10:32:59 PM
A growl emanates from low in Ban Maeve's chest and ancient words of tauric tumble out. He fixes the nearest feline abomination, what sick mind created these beasts? Could they even be of the same family? The wemic shudders, but none the less manages the incantation assuring intuitive insight into into the immediate future. (Casts True Strike)
DM Bob & Carla d20+12=16 d20+12=16 d20+12=21 d20+12=23 d4=2 d6+4=5 Wednesday March 15th, 2006 11:14:57 PM
The battle goes poorly for The Chosen as the Culverwood itself seems to conspire against them. The two displacer beasts seem to blend in and out of the dense vegetation, and the beholder hovers tantalizingly out of reach casting rays of exhaustion at the frustrated Taurs.
Zeoll remains trapped in the writhing vegetation to the north of the main fight and can but sing his plaintive song. [OOC: Special 100 XP for great role play and verse!!]
Winterglade provides much needed healing to the enlarged liontaur who is too enraged to immediately notice his friend's assistance. Toros misses with his glaive, which has become more cumbersome to wield and slashes out inaffectively with his sharp claws.
[OOC: Toros - PHB p. 25 " in a rage, a barbarian gains phenomenal strength and durability but becomes reckless and less able to defend himself." - I would suggest this rules out fighting defensively.]
Brahmah cranes his neck upwards and fires from close range, but something about this particular view of the underbelly of a beholder must have disracted him, for the arrow goes wide.
Flat-Top curses at the beholder and drops his morning star. He quickly takes up a new weapon and sends two crossbow bolts into the eye tyrant's globular body [OOC: no miss chance required for the beholder, just the displacer beasts]
Gecktar and Ban Maeve spend the round casting spells.
The two displacer beasts once again unleash their attacks on the taurs beneath the beholder, but only one manages to strike true, hitting Flat-top [Hit AC=23 for 5 HP]
The beholder turns his attention back to Flat-top, "Give me what is rightfully mine and I will let you go. Flyth had no right to sell all that we had worked for." He eyes the centaur with his most menacing stare.
Zeoll (AC18 HP53) (Inspired, Entangled) d20+11=12 Thursday March 16th, 2006 12:29:11 AM
[OOC: Thanks for the RP award!]
Zeoll figures that he is not getting out of the vines any time soon. But his friends need help! What can he do?
With Produce Flame he could hurl fire, but these vines would hinder his already poor aim. But his Flaming Sphere can go 130 feet, and lasts 6 rounds with his rod of extend. But will these vines let him cast a spell?
Zeoll tries. He concentrates on the magic, but just as he casts the Flaming Sphere spell, a vine pokes him in the eye! (rolled a nat 1 on the concentration check, rats!) That ruins the spell AND the one use of the rod!
NOTE: Inspire Courage ends in 5 rounds!
Zeoll's Stuff Used:
Druid Spells [used in brackets]: Level 0: Guidance, Light, Cure Minor Wounds x2 Level 1: Entangle, Charm Animal, Produce Flame Level 2: Barkskin, [Flaming Sphere]
Bard Spells (+2 DC on Enchantments)
0 of 3 Level 0 spells; Difficulty Class 15 (17) 0 of 3 Level 1 spells; Difficulty Class 16 (18)
Winterglade AC25 HP52(52) d20+6=17 Thursday March 16th, 2006 6:47:10 AM
Winterglade looks around. Brahmah and Flat-top are hurt, but both seem far from knocking on Gargul's door. The centaur's eye catches Zeoll, still entangled by the plants of the forest.
"Come now, enough of cat music! The gazer won't ask you for an autograph when you be done!"
Winterglade takes a calculating glance at the writhing mass of plants, locating the point of origin of the spell. Then the centaur climbs to his hind legs and rises his voice in a loud shout. There is a flash of light coming from his amulet and the power of Brawler passes through him, striving to pacify the angry forest [casts Dispel Magic on the Entangle spell, caster level check 17].
Then his ears catch the phrase spoken by the gauth and he sharply turns around.
"Ere, what's that Vasha's Story you be weaving?"
[Sanctuary, round 5/6, DC16; Prayer; Inspired]
Toros hp 61/65, AC 23 (prayer, fatigued, rage, enlarge - 6 round, ring of force shield, inspired) d20+10=22 3d8(8+8+7)+9=32 d20+10=30 d20+10=12 2d6(5+6)+9=20 Thursday March 16th, 2006 7:59:39 AM
Enraged, the liontaur does not seem to care what the beholder is talking about, and pursues his assault on it. With additional support from Gecktar, Toros is lucky enough to overcome the defense of the beholder this time, if he could still reach with his glaive (AC, 22, damage, 32). If he can he will try to move to a flanking position as well as use his paws to wound any of the enemy around (AC, 30, unconfirmed critical, damage 20 - good rolls!).

ooc: Made Save - Bolt#1 Ac 23 Damages 9hp - Bolt #2 Ac 24 Damage 9hp. (Sorry I'm not playing my best, I have the blues right now, but will get over it.)
Flat-top bites his lip as he get's hurt again, but will answer The One Eyed Monster Question. "What Item? The box of papers and charts?" All this time that Flat-top is talking, he is reloading his cross bow.
Flat-top brings up his crossbow, aims and shoot at the boss monster again.

"Sorry Zeoll, I'd thought you'd be safer in the vines!" He shouts with an apologetic smirk. "You owe me." He jests.
He again fires. [Adding Zeolls bonus'](AC 31, NAT 20 (crit 29), and 26, for 13(26 crit) and 16 damage)
Gecktar ac20 HP54/54 Thursday March 16th, 2006 12:59:04 PM
Gecktar come close to Toros but stays out of reach for the enemies. He touches him while saying a prayer of warding.
(Casts shield of faith on Toros giving him +2 deflection bonus to AC)
