Arm d20+4=24 d20+11=13 Thursday March 9th, 2006 6:00:59 AM
As they are leaving, Arm advises Kadaz that he hasn't seen the thief, and he is probably still inside with Lady Ilonia. All the while on their return trip, Arm keeps a sharp eye out to see if they were followed or not (spot=24, nat. 20; listen=13). Once they arrive at Samson's Arm takes a seat next to Mira, and finally relays to the group the nature of his vision...more for his benefit than the party's.
As he finishes, he says, "I think it best that we give the necklace back to Vaeder first thing in the morning. The sooner we're rid of it, the better. I, however, will not be joining you, as it's best that he doesn't notice that I am of elven heritage.". He says this with much shame, berating himself for what he is.
Kadaz Thursday March 9th, 2006 6:40:26 AM
Kadaz mulls over what happened. "Lady Ilonia knows we were looking for the necklace and now it's gone from her room. It's not going to take her long to figure out what happened. I expect her goons to pay us a visit in the next few days. We'll have to keep a good watch out for this. And we'd best return the necklace right away."
Shadow Thursday March 9th, 2006 9:58:33 AM
Shadow is very relieved when the group enters Sampson's. Once the group has ordered, Shadow says, "I guess I was unable to hide my success, so yes I did recover a necklace that matches the description. Now how to go about returning it could be a little tricky."
Mira d20+8=17 Thursday March 9th, 2006 10:23:47 PM
Mira takes the seat next to Arm. "I agree," she continues "lets return the necklace to Fendrick in the morning." Mira tries to signal the new help, and enquires politely about the special of the day. (Diplomacy=17) She will order some food and a pitcher of wine or whatever is on tap if it isn't too dear.
"Kadaz is right, of course," she adds, "we must be on our guard since we may not have been as secretive as could have been desired."
Sitting in Sampsons (DM JohnP) Thursday March 9th, 2006 10:53:38 PM
After Mira orders for herself, and everyone else does as well, the new waiter quickly brings drinks for everyone. After a short wait, he brings the evening's special out to Mira - a round loaf of bread filled with grilled mushrooms and vegetables, with a white cheese melted over the vegetables. It's quite good, if a little sloppy to eat unless it's picked apart.
Shadow knows better than to flash a good piece of jewelry about, even in a friendly place like Sampsons. But he describes it very well and everyone agrees that it seems to be what Vaeder described.
Arm was the first to suggest taking the necklace to Fendrik Vaeder in the morning, but the others quickly agree. Kadaz voices the caution that their interest in the necklace seemed to be well known to both Lady Ilonia. And the thieves who, despite Kadaz' warning, have not left town.
The rest of the meal is taken up with making plans for returning the necklace. After they finish eating and the latest jug of ale is emptied, everyone agrees that it is time to return to the apartment.
The walk to the apartment is quiet. After they enter the apartment, everyone disappears to their rooms.
In the morning, people awake and are ready for a new day. Glancing outside, it's another beuatiful morning - neither too cold, nor too warm and puffy white clouds are in the sky.
Arm d20+4=21 d20+11=31 Friday March 10th, 2006 5:57:16 AM
Arm awakens the next day, somewhat refreshed yet still troubled. The first thing he does is open the front door a crack to see if there's any trouble awaiting the group's departure for Vaeder's house. (spot=21, listen=31, nat. 20).
He longs to be able to perform, as that may take his mind off of things, but with the current climate, he'd probably only draw more unwanted attention than wanted. If there is nothing unusual outside, he returns to his room to think, realizing that the unfriendliness to elves is quite probably Woldwide, so it'd be to no advantage to him to leave the City. He then begins to strum quietly on his lute so as to not wake the others. If he DOES spot signs of trouble, he wakes the rest immediately.
Shadow Friday March 10th, 2006 10:35:27 AM
Shadow is greatful to get to the apartment and be able to sleep. After last night and this evening events it has been very nerve wracking. He finds himself unwinding a little bit, but will feel better once the necklace has been returned. He does worry about the news of the thieves not leaving town.
In the morning, Shadow gears up because of the feeling of this not quite being over, and gets ready to go with the group to Vaeder's house.
Dm Announcement Friday March 10th, 2006 11:15:56 PM
Waiting for posts
Kadaz Saturday March 11th, 2006 9:27:30 AM
Kadaz wakes very early the next morning and starts starts preparing. He cleans and sharpens his weapons, cleans the armor, tightens up all leathier ties, and brushes Birdie's fur. Finally he does some streaching exercises to loosen up. He is now ready for trouble.
Conner Saturday March 11th, 2006 5:16:20 PM
The burly fighter wakes early and spends time cleaning his sword and inspecting the remainder of his gear. The strange events of the previous evening play on his mind. What game are they up to? Is it just an elaborate hoax to part fools with their money, or does the woman really intend to depart this life with a roomfull of followers. Why pay for a necklace to be stolen when you intend to die?. Each stroke of the whetstone along the blade of his longsword brings another question.
When Mira rises he will ask her to inspect the necklace for magical properties.
Mira d20+13=29 Sunday March 12th, 2006 4:24:46 PM
Grateful that the night passed without incident, Mira prepares for the day. She has a look at the necklace when Shadow makes it available and compares it with the drawing and notes she made during her interview with Fendrick. "I wonder if Lady Ioana commissioned the theft of the necklace, or simply purchased it from a vendor who might be fencing stollen property?" The sorcerer pushes her glasses back up her nose, "remember, she said she had papers to establish proof of purchase."
The worman decides to examine the necklace more closely. (Detect Magic) If she gets any positive vibes, she will try to discern it's provenance. (Spellcraft=29)
The Morning After (DM JohnP) Sunday March 12th, 2006 9:08:23 PM
The morning dawns bright and clear with just a hint of chill in the air. When Arm opens the front door, he sees that a light rain fell overnight to clean the streets. He can't see or hear any unusual activity in the streets.
Shadow wakes and starts his preparations for the day. No one sleeps long after both Kadaz and Conner wake and start sharpening weapons. The scraping of whetstones over metal is what awakens Mira.
The sorcerer sits and talks with the others before they head out. Everyone wonders about the true motives of the cult they witnessed last night. And, for that matter, how lady Ilonia acquired the necklace. After Shadow retrieves the necklace, he and Mira sit and compare it to the drawing that Mira prepared from Vaeder's description. From what he described, the party has the correct necklace. To further investigate, Mira casts Detect Magic and examines the necklace. She cannot detect any active magical effects or lingering auras on the necklace.
With that complete, the party completes their preparations and steps out the door to return the necklace to Fendrik Vaeder. Arm goes out first and watches the street. The rest of the party move together, trying to keep whoever is carrying the necklace in the centre of their small group.
They make the short trip around some corners and up streets to reach Gauntlet Street. Looking ahead, they can see the ruin where Vaeder's house once stood. Moving closer, they look into the shadowed interior and see someone sitting in the ruined office, slumped over the desk. Arm's elven eyes are sharp enough to see that Fendrik Vaeder is snoring slightly with an empty wine bottle beside his head on the desk.
Kadaz Sunday March 12th, 2006 9:51:41 PM
Kadaz carefully looks over the steet and at the ruined home ahead of him. What good will come out of returning the necklace? It may be the right thing to do, but where will this end?
(OOC: I'm on a business trip and out of town Mon and Tue. Can post again Wed morning.)
Arm Monday March 13th, 2006 5:55:38 AM
Pointing out to the group that Vaeder seems to be drunk again, he says, "I'm headed to the Catacombs to perhaps find something more useful to disguise myself with. I'll meet you back at the apartment later.".
Shadow d20+3=15 d20+3=17 Monday March 13th, 2006 1:10:21 PM
Shadow would have given the care of the necklace to Mira, and would be watching the street as they go for any trouble. He will stay outside the ruined house as some of the group goes into the ruined house. (spot=15 Listen=17)
Conner Monday March 13th, 2006 5:09:58 PM
Conner enters the ruined building, carefully picking his way through the debris. As he approaches Fendrik, he calls out his name so as not to frighten the man. "Fendrik...Fendrick Vaeder..."
Mira Monday March 13th, 2006 5:23:06 PM
The woman follows Conner into the ruined building. The necklace, entrusted into her care by Shadow, is stowed in a velvet pouch fastened to the belt about her waist. She rests a hand lightly on the pouch, as if to reassure herself that it is still there.
Mira echos the fighter's words. "Fendrick Vaeder, we have returned," she says quietly, adding, "with Alena's necklace."
The Return (DM JohnP) d20+8=18 d20+7=27 Monday March 13th, 2006 9:56:07 PM Shadow waits outside the ruined house while Mira and Conner speak to Vaeder. He can hear a commotion starting in the nearby market.
Conner and Mira approach the slumped form of Fendrik Vaeder. They try to gently awaken the man so that he isn't alarmed by them being there.
While they are doing this, Kadaz leans up against the remains of the front wall of the house. He almost falls asleep while waiting indifferently.
It takes Conner and Mira some time to awaken Vaeder but eventually Conner is able to shake him awake?
"Wuzzat? Why are you here?"
When he hears Mira's words, a spark of life comes to his eyes.
"Alena's necklace? You have it?"
He reaches out towards the sorcerer. He is almost sobbing, but Mira cannot tell whether because of joy or sorrow.
"It's with you? Please, give it to me!"
=========================================
Arm decides that this is a good time to go shopping and tells the party that they will rejoin them at the apartment.
He's crossing open Open Palm Market and nearly at the door of the nearest Catacombs outlet when he starts to hear a commotion in the market.
Arm Tuesday March 14th, 2006 5:41:51 AM
Arm hurridly ducks inside the Catacombs, hoping to find what he needs quickly, then he will investigate the commotion in the market.
Shadow d20+3=22 d20+3=15 Tuesday March 14th, 2006 10:50:03 AM
Shadow will try and see what is going on in the market, but will not leave where he is. (Spot=22 listen=15)
Mira d20+2=19 d20+8=12 Tuesday March 14th, 2006 9:27:26 PM
Mira looses the velvet bag from her belt, and places it on the desk in front of the man. She rests a hand lightly on the bag, "Sir," she says, her voice even and calm, but her message dirrect (Diplomacy=12) "to correct a misconception held by yourself and your compatriots I must inform you that no elves were responsibile in any way for the misappropriation of your family treasure." Mira lifts her hand from the bag, "furthermore, it was due to the efforts and ingenuity of one of elvish blood that your wife's necklace was retrieved."
The sorcerer continues to study the man,(Sense Motive=19) before continuing. "I do not wish to lecture you, but we have learned that those who call themselves your friends may in fact have manipulated you and taken advantage of your grief." Gesturing to the empty bottles in the ditritus of the room, "when you succumb to the invitation of the grape, you leave yourself vulnerable to those who would prey upon you, like your so-called friend Davern Barber and his associates." Mira waits for the words to sink in, before adding softly, "you have real friends in places where you do not look for them...and one who lost his life trying to save your family..."
Conner Tuesday March 14th, 2006 9:37:16 PM
"She's right" Conner adds. "Saerthil gave his life trying to save your family. He was already dead when your necklace was stolen. Davern Barber and his thieving friends have used you. They stole your necklace and manipulated you into stirring up hatred against the elves. It is time for you to help put a stop to this."
Kadaz d20+1=18 Tuesday March 14th, 2006 10:34:32 PM
Outside, Kadaz opens his eyes a bit and looks around. Something disturbed his rest, what was it? (spot 18)
Next to him Birdie is curled up, taking advantage of a warm spot in the sun.
Influencing the Convinced (DM JohnP) d20+7=9 Tuesday March 14th, 2006 10:58:41 PM
As soon as Mira lifts her hand from the bag, Fendrik Vaeder snatches at it and empties the necklace out into his hands. He cups it in both hands, moving his hands so that the polished metal and gemstone catches the small amount of light that reaches this part of his ruined home.
"Alena ..."
He mutters his wife's name over and over. Mira and Conner are doubtful that he even hears anything that they say to him. Something gets through, though, and he looks up at them.
"You say that no elf stole this? What proof do you have?"
"I won't believe what you say about Davern. He's a good, solid man and devoted to the cause. He wouldn't do this."
Mira senses that Fendrik Vaeder strongly believes what he is saying, particularly about Davern Barber. Mira does think that she and Conner might be able to change his opinions about the thieves, however, if presented with proof.
========================================
From his spot leaning against the ruined front of the house, Kadaz catches a glimpse of someone approaching carefully from the direction of Open Palm Market.
Shadow gets a better look at the person - it's one of the thieves who originally stole the necklace!
========================================
From the quiet interior of the Catacombs outlet, Arm can hear shouts of alarm and dismay in the Market.
"Tredegar is dead! They've killed Tredegar!"
"Right in the Temple!
Arm d20+4=14 d20+9=20 Wednesday March 15th, 2006 6:05:08 AM
Arm quickly exits the Catacombs with his purchase in tow, and looks around quickly to see if he can find out more information from whomever is shouting (spot=14). If he can find someone, he'll question them about what has transpired (diplomacy=20), then head back to the others to inform them of what has happened.
Shadow d20+10=24 Wednesday March 15th, 2006 9:51:25 AM
Shadow will try and blend into the area he is in, so the thief will not spot him. (Hide=24)
Mira Wednesday March 15th, 2006 7:31:55 PM
Mira doesn't know what proof she can provide to the man other then the testimony of his elven neighbors, the widow and orphans of Saerthil. In his state, Fendrik is unlikely to believe those he accuses of conspiracy.
"Believe what you will," she says, shrugging her shoulders, her mouth a thin line on her face, "but keep that which you treasure close, for I am sure your friends will try to rob you again, and this time you will be on your own." Mira tries to catch Conner's eye, and inclines her head towards the door. "We are finished here."
Conner d20-2=16 Wednesday March 15th, 2006 8:11:39 PM
The big fighter shakes his head. "The proof is in our actions and the death of your old friend Saerthil, who gave his life so that your child might live. Dead before you say the necklace was stolen."
As the commotion outside grows, Conner prepares to leave. He puts a large weighty hand on the man's shoulder and with a last reassuring squeeze he departs. "Time heals all wounds friend. Look to the good in all people and they will find the good in you...and look to the Open Palm Market for our monument to those who lost their lives. Perhaps you will find peace there, when you look upon all the names, elf and human alike, who are gone to Gargul. Your loved ones will be remembered there." [Diplomacy=16]
Conner leaves the man with his necklace and heads for street level to find out what the commotion is about. He straps his shield to his arm as he exits.
Commotion in the Marketplace (DM JohnP) d20+5=21 Wednesday March 15th, 2006 10:00:08 PM Arm completes his shopping trip to the Catacombs by paying the friendly clerk. He puts his purchase under his arm and steps out of the shop and into the tumult of Open Palm Market.
"Tredegar is dead! The humans killed him!"
"Right there in the Temple!
Arm manages to stop a gnomish man who is hustling by. The man is only too willing to answer his questions.
"Tredegar was killed this morning! During prayers in the Temple of Flower! Oooh, this will stir things up!"
Arm wracks his brain for information about Tredegar.
Local Knowledge 10 - Highlight to display spoiler: {Tredegar is the high priest in the Temple of Flower. He is extemely popular (and well known) with the poorer people in Plateau City because of the charity he performed himself and led others in. He was also an elf.}
========================================
Shadow stands quietly in the corner and watches the thief approach. The man is moving carefully, but not so carefully that Shadow and Kadaz hadn't seen him. He's looking ahead towards the ruins of Vaeder's house.
Kadaz continues to stand, watching in disbelief at the thief who is clearly flaunting his warning to leave town.
Mira and Conner take their leave of Fendrik Vaeder but not before making some parting comments. The former merchant looks up at them, his bloodshot and bleary eyes appraising them.
"Look, I'm not going to take the word of those elves. They'd lie for their own purposes and to hide what they did. Like they lied about the coming of the so-called Fey King. They should have known better ... before they unleashed that thing on the City."
Vaeder is working himself to another of his tirades about elves and what the coming of the Fey King did to the City.
"What other proof do you have, besides the word of those elves? Show me and I might think otherwise. But until you can and do, good riddance to you elf-lovers!"
"What do you know about healing?"
"Never! Never will I forget Alena, Mari and Josey. Never!"
"And I won't forget the lies that Saerthel told me, either! And the other elves, too, they all lied to us!"
========================================
The thief creeping up the street clearly hears Vaeder's tirade. He crouches down by the stairs to a house and looks back behind him. Then the turns and watches the front of Vaeder's house.
Mira d20+2=8 Wednesday March 15th, 2006 10:14:14 PM
"Suit yourself," mutters Mira under her breath as she follows Conner. The sorcerer is tempted to slam what remains of the door, but thinks better. It takes a while for her eyes to accustom themselves to the brightness of out-of-doors, after the dim light of the ruined house. (Spot=8) "Conner?" she asks as she brings her hand up to shield her eyes, "can you see the others?" She draws her big cloak about her to keep out the coolness.
Arm d20=17 d20+4=21 Thursday March 16th, 2006 5:54:40 AM
Arm thinks for a moment, then remembers hearing the name "Tredegar" before, especially since the aftermath of the Awakening (local knowledge=17). Wondering to himself if the atrocities against the elves will ever end, he hurries back to his companions to tell them the news. If he should see the thief from the night before, however, he'll motion for the rest to follow then take off after him first and teach him what the words, "leave town NOW" really mean (spot=21).
Shadow Thursday March 16th, 2006 9:47:08 AM
Shadow will remain hidden from the thief, but will motion towards Kadaz to join the others. He will remain to see what the thief does and will try following him.
Kadaz Thursday March 16th, 2006 1:30:28 PM
Kadaz finally sees the oncoming thief and starts to move towards him. But he sees Shadow's waved directions and halts. He turns and joins the group. "One of those thieves is outside. Shadow is watching him," he warns the others.
Conner [AC=22 HP = 52] d20+4=20 d20+10=27 Thursday March 16th, 2006 6:35:27 PM
Conner follows Mira outside and takes a quick scan of his surroundings to determine the nature of the commotion [Spot=20]. If he sees the thief hiding by the stairs he will apprehend him as quickly and with as much force as possible by pushing him back into the corner of the building [Charge / Bull Rush = 27]. If he fails to spot the thief he will simply join Kadaz and any of the others he sees on the street.
Unexpected Company (DM JohnP) d20+7=19 Thursday March 16th, 2006 10:20:30 PM Arm recalls what he remembers about Tredegar, the late High Priest of Flower. The elf was certainly popular before the coming of the Fey King. Since, he has been in the forefront of the rebuilding efforts, especially in the poorer parts of town.
The half-elf hurries across Open Palm Market, trying to keep his distance from a small group of Plateau City Defense League supporters. As soon as he enters Gauntlet Street, he sees another group of people waiting just out of sight of the ruins of Vaeder's house.
Spot DC 10 - Highlight to display spoiler: {Arm can see that all four of these people have the badge of the Silver Swords on their tunics. They're watching or waiting for some sign from further down the street.}
========================================
Mira has had enough of the stubborn bigotry that Fendrik Vaeder now espouses. The man remains seated at his desk, staring at the necklace. When Mira steps out into the sun, Kadaz moves to join her. Shadow had waved him off from confronting the thief.
Conner, however, didn't catch any of the gestures from Shadow. When the tattooed fighter steps from Vaeder's house, he catches a glimpse of the thief sheltering behind the stairs of a house on the opposite side of the street. He charges across the street, trying to knock the man down.
The thief can't avoid Conner's rush but he does start squealing.
"They're here! The ones who were after the necklace! Save me!"
Conner is too preoccupied to notice, but the others (including Arm) now see and hear four people running up the street. A voice booms out, "Hold right there! You're under arrest!"
Arm Friday March 17th, 2006 5:57:27 AM
Arm rolls his eyes in disgust upon hearing the voice. Not wanting to cause any more undue trouble, he raises his arms and motions for the rest to do the same. Hopefully they'll be able to talk sense to whomever may be in charge, but they'll DEFINITELY need support from Shadow on this one, as he can provide testimony as to the unlicensed activity from the thieves.
Conner d20+7=19 d20+8=15 d6+4=7 d3+4=5 Friday March 17th, 2006 10:40:10 AM
Conner hears the man squeal like a trapped pig and a wave of digust rolls over him. He drives forward and up with his shield arm [Hit AC=19 for 7 HP] and follows with a punch to the mid section [Hit AC=15 for 5 HP sub-lethal].
"Shut yer gob" he growls at the thief.
Kadaz d20+1=17 Friday March 17th, 2006 5:04:58 PM
Kadaz hears the arrest order. This is going to be a pretty pickle to sort out. Vaeder had better sober up quick. He moves outside to try to grab the thief.
Mira d20+3=6 Saturday March 18th, 2006 12:13:39 AM
Mira takes a step backwards planning to blend into the shadows of the tree engulfing Vader's house (Hide=6) unfortunately she trips on a root and sprawls forward onto the cobbles of the street instead.
Under Arrest ! (DM JohnP) d20+8=13 d20+4=20 Sunday March 19th, 2006 1:37:43 PM
The arrival of the guards stops everyone in their tracks. Everyone but Conner, that is. He keeps beating on the thief that he tackles, hitting the thief with both his shield and a punch.
"Oof! Get him off me!", cries the thief.
Kadaz runs across the street to help Conner with subduing the thief. He draws up short when one of the guards blocks him with a quarterstaff.
"Hold up! We'll beat you down if you don't stop! And you'll be sorry about that!"
Mira attempted to sneak away from Vaeder's house but instead stumbled. She sits on the ground peering at the approaching guards.
Shadow remains hidden inside the house and none of the guards have spotted him yet. In fact, Shadow quickly concludes, no one is looking for him since he was never seen by any of the thieves or at Lady Ilonia's house.
Behind the guards, Arm throws up his hands in surrender. The nearest guard looks puzzled at Arm's actions. He shakes his head and moves to grab Arm by the arm, however, acting on the assumption that Arm feels guilty about something.
========================================
The thief tries to swing back at Conner but doesn't connect. Hits AC 20
The thief does continue to shout, "I told you they'd be here! This is them, the ones who came looking for the necklace! Ask them where it is!"
The smallest of the guards steps forward towards where the Conner is fighting with the thief. He speaks in a quiet, menacing voice.
"Like Mikal said, stop fighting. If you don't stop, Mikal here will beat you senseless."
The big man with the quarterstaff now shifts and presses the end into Conner's back. The small man looks around, surveying the scene.
"We just wanted to ask you some questions, but it seems that you have something to hide. How about all four of you come quietly? Or does Mikal need to beat some sense into some of you?"
The remaining guard, a big woman dressed in tight leathers, walks over to where Mira is sprawled on the ground and extends a hand towards her.
Kadaz Sunday March 19th, 2006 6:04:24 PM
Kadaz steps forward, both hands raised. "Hold please. I am Kadaz Guardson, formerly of the guard. Do any of you know me?" He looks around carefully at the guards, trying to recognize any of them.
Conner Sunday March 19th, 2006 11:45:01 PM
"By what right?" Conner replies. "Yer not guardsmen and have no authority in this part of town. Ask yer questions if ya choose, or accompany us to see a magistrate with this rat if that suits ya better." The fighter keeps a fistfull of the rogues jersey, preventing his immediate escape.
Mira d20+2=11 d20+9=26 Monday March 20th, 2006 12:01:56 AM
Mira grabs the extended hand and accepts the boost to her feet. She appraised the woman's clothing to see if she is with the city guard or some other group. (Spot=11) "Who's under arrest and why?" she asks, feigning an innocent look (Bluff=26) while she pats the dust from her clothes.
Arm d20+9=28 Monday March 20th, 2006 5:51:31 AM
Arm says to the guard who restrains him, "Not in the least, kind sir, am I guilty of anything. I simply raised my arms in a gesture of peace to show that I do not wish to fight you (diplomacy=28). I'm sure that we can settle whatever dispute is present here amicably.". He thens awaits the guard's response.
Shadow Monday March 20th, 2006 8:07:29 AM
Shadow remains hidden and will so until the group is taken away. He will follow at a very far distance to make sure he is not 'made' by the thief.
Field Interrogation (DM JohnP) d20+14=24 d6+8=12 Monday March 20th, 2006 10:10:55 PM
The party looks back and forth between the four guards who want to arrest or question them and the thief who is struggling with Conner.
Kadaz looks closely at the four guards and notices the badges on their tunics or cloaks. These are the Silver Swords, the private security force from Wealthy and Noble Quarters, not the City Guard. None of them are familiar to Kadaz though. Still, he seems to get a positive reaction when he mentions his association with the Guard.
Conner backs that up with some tough talk while both Mira and Arm try a smoother approach.
The small leader of the Silver Swords looks around at the party and the thief sprawled at Conner's feet.
"Let him up, why don't you?"
He speaks to Kadaz and the others and begins to recite what he knows about the party.
"I don't know you or why you left the Guards. That doesn't matter. We're looking into the theft of a necklace from a resident of Wealthy Quarter."
"All of you were seen there last night at a private gathering. And you inquired about a necklace that later went missing."
"This man," pointing to the thief, "thought that you might be here this morning."
"So, I want to know what you know about the disappearance of this necklace. You can answer my questions here or," turning to speak to Conner, "we can find the guards and a magistrate and ask our questions there. Your choice, but you're going to answer my questions."
He looks back and forth at the party, waiting for a response.
All the while, Fendrik Vaeder has been inside his ruined house. Conner sees the leader of the Plateau City Defense League step from the shadows and look at all of the people standing in front of his house. He still has the necklace clutched in his hand.
Vaeder looks at the theif on the ground and exclaims, "Geordie! What are you doing here? What's going on here?"
The leader of the Swords looks at Vaeder and the necklace and shakes his head.
"This is getting too complex. And there's no way we're going to get a straight story with all of you together. We're taking all of you to the Guards and we're getting to the bottom of this."
He walks over closer to Vaeder after saying this, extending his hand in a gesture to indicate that Vaeder is supposed to go with them.
The other three guards start moving when the thief tries to run away. The man with the quarterstaff swings it quickly, catching the thief behind the ear. Geordie ends up on the ground.
The small man turns and points to Kadaz and Conner.
"Carry him, you two. Try to be gentle, too."
The party has the choice of complying with the Silver Swords or attempting to put up a fight.
========================================
All the while, Shadow watches from the shadows within the ruined house. This is getting really interesting ....
Conner Monday March 20th, 2006 10:47:07 PM
"The magistrate it is then" Conner replies to the leader of the Silver Swords, as he hauls Geordie to his feet. When he gets a moment he will fall in line with Fendrik and whisper "And now you will see we do not lie. This Geordie was one of the thieves who stole the necklace from you, and now he tries to run to avoid the magistrates questioning."
Arm Tuesday March 21st, 2006 5:42:56 AM
Arm nods in agreement at the guard's words, then assuming that he is no longer restrained, will fall in with the rest. Otherwise, he'll go wherever his guard prompts him to.
Mira d20+8=14 d20+7=14 Tuesday March 21st, 2006 7:39:10 AM
Mira follows along, trailing behind the group. She watches to see if the big woman moves up to join the others or acts as a sort of rear-guard. The sorcerer will try to engage the soldier in conversation (Diplomacy=14, Gather Info.=14) to learn what she can of the Silver Swords and their relationship with both Vaeder's group, the Defenders and the Plateau City Guards.
"Adventuring groups are one thing, but private armies quite another," she thinks to herself.
Kadaz d20+1=5 Tuesday March 21st, 2006 6:02:22 PM
Recognizing these as private guards Kadaz feels a wave of disgust. It's not right to have separate guards only for those rich enough. But given the situation, better to not say anything now. "Come on, Birdie, let's go straighten this out." He goes along with the guards watching for any unusual move on their part. (spot 5)
Down to the Guards (DM JohnP) Tuesday March 21st, 2006 10:23:42 PM
The Silver Swords herd the party, Geordie the thief and Fendrik Vaeder. Vaeder loudly objects the entire time.
"Where are you taking me? Why are you doing this? The necklace is mine, been mine for years."
Vaeder peers at each member of the Silver Swords.
"Are any of you elves? Or have elvish blood? Did you want the Fey King to come?"
When Conner speaks to him, Vaeder snorts in disbelief. But he does peer questioningly at Geordie.
Arm and Kadaz follow along silently. Mira tries to strike up a conversation with the female guard. When the small leader is looking, the woman responds quietly to Mira.
"Defense League? This is the Vaeder who leads that bunch of losers? He's just a drunk, from the looks of it."
"The Guard? We have an understanding, we look after our area and they look after the rest of the city."
Shadow is nowhere to be seen. The party can't tell if he is following them or slipped out ahead.
After a short walk towards Merchant Quarter, everyone is getting close to the Guard office where Kadaz visited just before going to the ceremony at the mansion. When everyone steps inside, the Guard sergeant on duty greets the Sivler Swords. It's difficult to tell if the greeting is truly friendly.
"Lukas! You're on the wrong side of the river! What have you brought to us?"
The small leader smiles and nods. His reply is businesslike, definitely not joking along with the Guard.
"We're investigating a robbery. Can we use some of your cells to interrogate these folks?"
The Guard sergeant nods curtly and motions inside, allowing everyone to enter. When he sees Kadaz he greets him.
"What are you doing here, Kadaz? Freddie told me that you dropped by yesterday. You with all of these folks or have you gone over the river?"
After some shuffling and jostling, each member of the party, Geordie the thief and Fendrik Vaeder are each sitting in a room by themselves. Pointedly, the Guard don't lock the doors after ushering anyone inside.
Time seems to drag. Waiting is tough, especially with the door unlocked.
========================================
DM Note: Each member of the party is separated. But each member gets the same question and treatment.
Lukas, the leader of this squad of Silver Swords, finally enters the room. Accompanying him is the sergeant of the Guards.
Lukas pulls up a chair and asks, "Tell me what you know about this necklace. Don't leave anything out."
Mira d20+9=22 Wednesday March 22nd, 2006 12:01:54 AM
"Hey! Easy there!" Mira doesn't like getting singled out and seperated from her friends. "What's the meaning of this?" she asks haughtily when she is manhandled into a lone cell. "What do I know about a necklace?"
Mira looks up at her questioner. Her emerald green eyes framed with dark lashes, large behind her spectacles. They flash momentarily as she uses her index finger to push the lenses back up her nose.
If it's Fendrick Vaeder's necklace you're talking about...the one with the platinum chain and the pendant of a large saphire with diamonds all around...well it belonged to his wife, Alena. Fendrick said business had been good, his family was growing, and he wanted to give his wife something special. He said Burl Tarveson made the necklace for him, and he, Fendrick, gave it to Alena.
Mira lowers her voice, and it cracks a little with emotion as she continues.
"He told us his wife and two daughters died during the recent...upheavel...you know? The only thing left to Fendrick after he buried his wife and the one daughter who's body they could find was Alena's necklace."
Mira takes a deep breath, twines her fingers together, and stares at them unable to make contact with her questioners.
"Mr. Vaeder reported his property stollen. Said he kept it in a drawer in his desk for safe keeping, only it wasn't safe from his so-called friends. That one...Geordi...and another...Davern...Davern Barber stole it from him. We...I...me and some friends...traced it to the Demontmorency residence. We...we went looking for it, but we...I...never saw it."
Mira looks straight at her interviewer (Bluff-22)
"Honest...I never actually saw it...only what Fendrick told me and a picture I drew...until this morning. And, then, we...I...we brought it right to him and gave it to him. Just ask him. Just ask Fendrick Vaeder. And that's the truth!"
Mira flicks a stray whisp of brown hair from off her face, and leans back into the chair, her arms crossed over her chest and waits for what is to come next.
Arm d20+9=29 Wednesday March 22nd, 2006 5:49:30 AM
Somewhat taken aback but impressed by Mira's detailed explanation, Arm has only this to add, "If it would please you, sir...I happen to find it odd that this Geordi person would know that we were at Mr. Vaeder's residence this morning. How would he know that if he didn't steal the necklace from there in the FIRST place?". (diplomacy=29-nat. 20)
Arm - illegal second post Wednesday March 22nd, 2006 5:52:48 AM
"Also," he quickly adds, "Of all the places to go if we DID steal it, why would we be at Mr. Vaeder's house in broad daylight instead of finding some clandestine purveyor of 'questionable merchandise' in which to take leave of it? The fact that Mr. Vaeder claims that it is his should speak volumes as well.".
Conner d20-1=14 Wednesday March 22nd, 2006 7:57:58 AM
"What? No magistrate? Still, I've got nothing to hide [Bluff=14]."
Conner takes a moment to figure out where to start. "Fendrik over there...the drunk...well that necklace is all he has left as a reminder of his wife. He's convinced that an elf stole it! He blames everything on the elves since the Fae King. Anyway, we found out that this Geordie and his friend Davern stole it and sold it to some rich lady. We went to her house yesterday but she was having some kind of strange ceremony and it did'nt seem like the right time so I agreed to come back and talk to her about it today. She says she has a bill of sale which should prove who stole it in the first place..."
The fighter pauses a moment as something pricks the back of his mind. "I'm not so sure that the bill of sale can be trusted, because we saw that Geordie rat talking with her at the ceremony, like he knew her. Anyway, we left the party and were supposed to go back today to recover it, but instead we found it this morning and gave it back to Fendrik."
Shadow Wednesday March 22nd, 2006 1:11:55 PM
Shadow follows the group back to the gaurd house and realizes that he can not be much help here. He heads off to the Thieves Guild to see what is being done about the three thieves that have gone against the Guilds ruling.
At the Guild he will seek out the day master and say, "Those three thieves that I told you about have not left the city, and have caused even more problems with not only my companions but also with a group that is set to destroy non-humans."
Kadaz d20+1=14 Wednesday March 22nd, 2006 3:33:13 PM
As they enter the guard station Kadaz is grateful to be reconized. "No sergeant, I haven't joined the Silver Swords. My friends and I have found a better way to help our City. But these sell swords here seem to put the interests of their rich masters over the City's. I'm sure that we can sort things out soon."
Kadaz goes quietly into the small room. He recognizes a standard interrogating technique - separate the suspects, get individual stories and compare them, then go back at the one who seems weakest or dumbest. He waits patiently, entertaining Birdie by playing tug-of-war with a leather thong.
When the two questioners arrive Kadaz nods at the guard sergeant and tries to remember his name. (knowledge 14)
Kadaz expects the sergeant to take the lead but is surprised when Lukas asks the first question. Kadaz pauses, then replies disdainfully. "I do not recognize your authority to question me. I will fully answer any questions put to me by a member of the rightful Plateau City guard or by a city magistrate. But not you." He turns to look at the guard sergeant and waits.
Under the Question (DM JohnP) Wednesday March 22nd, 2006 9:50:07 PM
Everyone responds to the questions from Lukas, leader of the Silver Sword squad.
Mira and Arm both spill out their stories. Lukas and the Guard sergeant simply sit back and listen.
Conner displays soem resistance, but still talks.
Kadaz finally displays some resistance and refuses to answer questions. Sergeant Tomin looks over at Lukas and shrugs.
"Looks like he's got you there, Lukas. I could ask the questions, but we'll probably get exactly the same story as we did from all of his friends. And I don't have time to wait for a magistrate, not with the City boiling over the murder of Priest Tredegar."
Sergeant Tomin motions Lukas out of the room, leaving Kadaz there to stew. Everyone, in fact, is left in the unlocked cells. Out in the main part of the Guard post all of you can hear Guard squads trooping in and out.
========================================
Shadow follows the party to the Guard post and realizes that he can't rescue him. So he goes off to the Guild in the Trade Quarter. After making all the recognition codes, Shadow is admitted to the house. he doesn't have to wait long for the Day Master to see him.
After he relays his message, the Day Master sits and thinks for moment. After drumming his fingers on the table for several seconds, the Day Master asks Shadow some questions.
"So, these 'members' have not obeyed the Guild edict. Who did they steal this necklace for?"
"Did you see any other sign that they're violating Guild rules?"
"Do you want me to assist your companions?"
Conner Wednesday March 22nd, 2006 11:47:00 PM
Conner eases his muscular frame into a comfortable position and takes the opportunity to relax while he awaits the next round of questioning
Mira d20+3=14 d20+2=15 d20+9=16 Thursday March 23rd, 2006 12:24:37 AM
When the guards leave, Mira doesn't stay seated for long. Creeping silently to the open door,(Move Silently=14) she looks both ways. (Spot=15) If the coast is clear, she will tip-toe out of the cell and see how far she can get to the nearest exit. If she is stopped and questioned, she will volunteer that she is "just looking for the ladies' room!" (Bluff=16)
Arm Thursday March 23rd, 2006 5:45:56 AM
Not wanting to cause any undo suspicion, Arm sits back and tries to relax as best he can while awaiting the guard's decision.
Shadow Thursday March 23rd, 2006 9:40:53 AM
Shadow relays the events as they unfolded, and realizes he should not hold anything back (even though he could get into some trouble for actually rescuing the necklace). (OOC: John, not sure you wanted me to spell out the whole story, so I opted for the simple way. Let me know and I can repost exactly what he says.)
When the Day Master asks about helping his friends, Shadow hesitates and thinks about the consequences of such actions. "I am not sure how we could directly help them, but if we could expose the thieves as the source of the trouble here it might work. What do you have in mind?"
Kadaz d20-3=3 Thursday March 23rd, 2006 6:21:19 PM
After 5 minutes of waiting Kadaz stands up, calls Birdie to him, and opens the door. He goes out to the common room and looks for any of the guard. He intends to spend some time talking to his former comrads, telling tall tales (goblins under the streets of Plateau City!, 1" tall dwarves!), and complaining about those in charge. You know, the normal stuff.
He'll look around for a guard boy, one of those kids who hang around the post, and send the kid out with enough gold to buy food and drink for everyone. Once it arrives he'll ask for his friends to be brought into the room to help share the meal.
During this time he'll try to slip in a question about the piest Tredegar but his attempt is ignored. (gather information 3)
Time to Waste (DM JohnP) Thursday March 23rd, 2006 9:56:06 PM Shadow recounts everything to the Day Master, leaving nothing out. The Day Master frowns at certain points of the narrative, especially when Shadow admits to breaking into the DeMontmorency mansion. And when he recounts what he and his companions observed inside.
"So, the place was protected by a Guild mark? The same one that you use to mark your home?"
"And your companions say that Geordie was taking part in this cult gathering?"
"When you were inside the house, did you pick up any other information?"
The Day Master sits behind his desk for a moment, then pulls a pen from the stand on his desk and some paper from a drawer. He quickly scribbles something onto the page, blots it, and folds it several times. Reaching into the same drawer, he removes some wax of an unusual colour and melts some onto the paper.
The Day Master holds out the paper. "Answer my questions, and you can take this to help your companions."
=======================================
The party reacts to the boredom in different ways. Conner and Arm try to catch up on their sleep.
Mira tries to push the door open quietly and looks out. She overhears several guards talking about what has occurred since the murder of Priest Tredegar - rioting, several instances of Defense League supporters being attacked, and coutnerattacks against elves. She does note that Vaeder's cell is unlocked, like hers, but that Geordie's cell is locked.
When she is noticed and mutters her explanation, the guard points to the bucket sitting in the smelly corner of her cell.
"Least you's gots a bucket."
Kadaz takes matters in his own hands again. When he pushes his door open and goes to the common room, Lukas and the Silver Swords bristle. But Sergeant Tomin calms them.
"Kadaz will remain within the post, right Kadaz? It won't be long before the boys get back and confirm their story, anyway."
One of the boys who hang around the post is more than willing to fetch some food. He takes longer than usual to return, explaining that there were a lot of people in the streets.
When Kadaz has the food, plus some extra for the guards, his friends are invited out. The Silver Swords don't share in the food and the big one with the quarterstaff moves closer to the door.
Arm Friday March 24th, 2006 5:50:36 AM
Arm gratefully partakes of the food, and wonders what has become of Shadow...he hopes that he hasn't run into problems, and at the same time wishes that he were here to corroborate their stories.
Conner Friday March 24th, 2006 7:59:26 AM
Conner thanks the guards and the boy for their efforts and consumes the food they provided. In between bites he tries to engage both the guard and the Silver Swords in conversation about the deterioration of civility in the city.
"I am worried that the unrest between elves and humans will boil over. These Defence Leaguers have provoked a situation that will be hard to bring under control."
Shadow Friday March 24th, 2006 8:46:18 AM
When the Day Master asks his questions, Shadow cringes, but has determined to answer honestly and take the punishment he might recieve.
"Yes, the mansion had the guild mark, but I knew the three thieves that had gone against the guild were in there. Also, I told you yesterday what I planned and had your okay."
"Yes, Geordie was in there and taking part."
"There is one piece of information that I just remembered about, and could have played a major part in todays confusion. I overheard someone saying the following, 'All the arrangements are made for tomorrow?' 'Yes. My payment is ready?' 'Yes it is. You'll get it when the job is done.' I did not get to see the individuals, but I overheard this while I was upstairs."
Shadow waits to see the reaction from the Day Master, and he will sit quietly.
Kadaz d20-3=0 Friday March 24th, 2006 12:28:40 PM
In the day room Kadaz several times offers food to the Silver Swords seeing if he can wear them down a bit. Otherwise, he sits quietly, watching the guards coming and going, trying to overhear what are the current problems. But he is too busy eating or playing with Birdie that he learns nothing at all. (gather information 0)
Mira Saturday March 25th, 2006 9:28:29 AM
On being reprimanded, Mira returns to the cell, but stays near the open doorway eating a little of the food supplied by Kadaz. She listens in on the conversations some more and becomes pensive at the retelling of the murder of Priest Tredegar, the rioting, and the attacks on the Defense League and those of elvish heritage.
Release! (DM JohnP) Sunday March 26th, 2006 9:38:23 PM Shadow answers the questions from the Day Master. The local head of the Guild listens intently and makes some notes of Shadow's answer. Then he looks up and utters one word.
"Curious."
Then the Day Master picks up the sealed note and holds it out to Shadow.
"Take this to the Guard Post and give it to whoever is leading the Silver Swords."
The thief takes the note and leaves the Guild house. Weaving his way through the streets of the Trade Quarter, Shadow makes his way to the Guard post.
========================================
People are picking at the remains of the food that Kadaz ordered. Even Mira comes back out to join in the repast. The only ones who who do not join in are Lukas, Fendrik Vaeder and Geordie, who is still locked in his cell. After a time, even the other Sivler Swords join in despite glares from Lukas.
Conner's comment about the Defense League draws some stares before anyone answers. Finally one of the Guard answers. "Ya, if any proof of a connection between the League and the murder of Tredegar comes out, it would be bad. Make the riots today look mild."
Shortly after the last of the food is eaten, a guard returns to the post and signals to Sergeant Tomin. The Sergeant stands from the table and moves over to whisper with the guard. After a moment, he signals Lukas over. The leader of the Silver Swords joins the two, glancing at the party as the conversation continues.
Finally, Sergeant Tomin and Lukas approach the party where they sit around the table. Sergeant Tomin clears his throat before speaking.
"Well. Vaeder's story has been confirmed. The jeweler who made the necklace verifies it, as do his neighbours. So that means your story checks out, too."
"Geordie ... well, he's the only one with that story."
Just then the door opens and Arm's hope is answered. Shadow is there, clutching a sealed note.
After learning who leads the Silver Swords, Shadow passes the note to Lukas. After examining the seal, Lukas opens the note and quickly reads it. After doing so, he nods and looks at the party.
"Well, Sergeant Tomin, I see no need to hold these people here. Geordie, however, I think that he filed a false report of a crime with you. And probably stole the necklace in the first place. I can't tell you your business, but the magistrates would probably be interested in his story."
Lukas then motions to his squad and turns to leave. While he doesn't make any sign of regretting the inconvenience to the party, the woman and the man with the quarterstaff do shrug as they leave.
Sergeant Tomin looks at everyone, including the recently arrived Shadow.
"I was going to kick you loose anyway. But without a complaint from the Swords, there's even less reason to hold you. You're all free to go."
"Oh, when you go, take Vaeder with you. We don't want him around here, especially with what's happening today."
"And don't tell me what you plan on doing."
Kadaz Monday March 27th, 2006 6:03:20 AM
Kadaz helps clean up the room before leaving, making sure Birdie gets some leftovers. "Thank you very much Sergeant. It's always a pleasure dealing with the Guard. If there's any help we can ever provide don't hesitate to ask." He nods at the other guards as they leave.
Once outside he asks the others "Now, what do we do about Vaeder, Priest Tredegar, and the Defense League?"
Shadow d20+2=10 d20+5=11 Monday March 27th, 2006 11:53:19 AM
Shadow looks very uncomfortable, fidgeting and not able to stand still, while in the gaurd house. Once outside, the group hears an audible sigh from the thief, and realize what it was like for the thief to be in the guard house.
When Kadaz speaks up Shadow snaps his head around, first at Kadaz and then around them. "I suggest we discuss this back at the apartment." He continues to scan the area. (listen=10 spot=11)
Mira Monday March 27th, 2006 7:30:08 PM
With mostly guys around, and just a couple of tough looking females, Mira feels a little uncomfortable. The sorcerer is glad when the party are released without any trouble. Like the rogue, Mira's sigh of relief is audible.
"I really don't like this lashing out at elves, and those of elvish blood," she says, casting a sideways glance at Arm and Shadow. "How are you guys holding up?" she enquires, hoping the two aren't taking what is happening too...personally?
"Kadaz, what do you think about checking in at the temple of, Flower...I think it is, and see how the folks there are doing? We might be able to do something for them, even if it just means keeping creeps like the Defense League out of the neighborhood." Mira looks hopefully at the others to see how they feel about this matter.
Conner d20+4=23 Monday March 27th, 2006 7:36:43 PM
Before the party departs, Conner approaches the Sergeant of the Guards. Clearing his throat he asks Tomlin if many of the Guards perished during the recent natural disaster.
Clearing his throat once again, the fighter explains about the memorial that he hopes to errect in the little park on Riverside Road just off the Open Palm Market. Maybe the Guards could provide a list of their honourable dead. Their names could be added to those the fighter has already collected.
Conner will then follow after his friends, glancing about to see if anyone seems to be taking more then an average interest in their departure. (Spot=23)
Information and Planning (DM JohnP) Monday March 27th, 2006 11:16:04 PM
Everyone is relieved when they exit the Guard post. Before he leaves the post, Conner asks about how the Guard fared during the troubles. Sergeant Tomin looks up at the fighter and grimaces.
"We lost a lot of good men and women. Too many. Your idea is good, really good. Maybe something like that would show how everyone was affected. Wait a minute," says Tomin while he scratches out a list of names. "These are the Guards from this post who we know were lost. And the one we're pretty certain of, too." He hands the list to Conner. After taking the list, Conner joins his companions outside the post.
Vaeder is released at the same time as the party and he steps out into the sunshine at the same time. He overheard most of the conversations in the main room and looks a little surprised. He approaches the party.
"I want to tell you that I never heard anything about Tredegar until after those ruffians dragged us here. I'm certain that the Defense League had nothing to do with his murder. I would know and would have stopped it. We simply want the elves to leave, not to kill them. You probably don't believe me but it's true."
He glances around at the party trying to gauge their reactions. Everyone realizes that they haven't seen him this sober before.
"I have to get back and see what's been happening. Thank you for your efforts, even yours," he says pointedly to Arm.
After Vaeder takes his leave, Kadaz's question about what to do about Vaeder, the Defense League and the murdered priest hangs in the air. Shadow is a little nervous discussing such things on the doorstep of the Guard post and suggests going back the apartment.
Mira suggests going to the heart of the recent troubles at the Temple of Flower. If nothing else, they might be able to assist the Guard in keeping the peace.
The apartment and the Temple of Flower are in opposite directions, however, so the party stands and tries to decide where to go.
Arm Tuesday March 28th, 2006 5:56:44 AM
Looking askance at Vaeder, he recovers and replies, "Well, I suppose not ALL of us elves are bad then, eh? Whether you choose to believe me or not, even though the vote was cast to awaken the Sleeper, the elves did not know what was going to happen. Our race lost many lives as well, and please accept my condolences on the loss of your wife.".
After Vaeder leaves, he turns to the party and says, "When we go to the temple, be it now or after we head back to the apartment first, I think it'd be best if I inquire as to the situation...where I was left out before I now may be of great help.".
Kadaz Tuesday March 28th, 2006 6:51:17 AM
Before Vaeder leaves Kadaz has some advice for him. "Your wife's necklace was stolen for a high society lady who seems ruthless. She may want it back. You'd better hide it. And staying drunk just makes it that much easier thieves to take it. And do you think your wife would have wanted you to sit around drunk all day or instead to get your act together and fix the home you two built together?"
But enough of that. The sun is shining, Kadaz just had a good meal, and they're not in jail under suspicion. Life is good! Kadaz is up for a little more investigation now. "Mira, I like your idea. Let's go check out this temple and see how we can help. Maybe there will be some Defense League idiots there we can bash" he says with a grin.
Birdie, having had way too many leftovers (it seems everyone was slipping him bits of meat) is much less enthusiastic about walking anywhere. He'd much rather have a nice nap in a sunny spot.
Shadow d20+2=6 d20+5=20 Tuesday March 28th, 2006 9:46:32 AM
Shadow listens to what the group tells Vaeder, and has not much to add. He will keep watch around to see if the other two thieves are around. (listen=6, spot=20)
Mira Tuesday March 28th, 2006 7:20:04 PM
"Well, I'm certainly not hungry...and it doesn't seem too late in the day." Mira hooks an arm around Arm's arm (sorry!) adding "to the temple of Flower then."
Conner d20+4=14 d20+3=23 Tuesday March 28th, 2006 7:25:07 PM
The fighter accepts the list of names from the sergeant, quietly folding it and placing it in a secure pocket. His face remains expressionless, but as he clears his throat once again, the magical tatoo on the side of his head darkens, reflecting his true emotions.
Conner takes up a rearguard position as the party makes it's way through the city.
Spot=14 Listen=23 (nat. 20!)
To the Temple of Flower (DM JohnP) Tuesday March 28th, 2006 10:10:55 PM
Vaeder's statement draws responses from both Arm and Kadaz. The leader of the Defense League shrugs off their advice, however.
After a brief discussion, the party decides to head towards the Temple of Flower. It's located in the Gold Quarter not very far from the Blue Ale Tavern where they had enjoyed a meal the previous evening before going to the cult gathering.
Mira and Arm lead off, followed by Kadaz and Shadow. After carefully folding the note from Sergeant Tomin, Conner takes up the rear. As they walk through the city, Conner can hear shouting from many different quarters. Evidently, the troubles caused by Tredegar's death have spread citywide.
The party starts walking towards the river. They are turned back from the bridges crossing the river to the north, so they have to retrace their steps from the previous day. Guild and Merchant Quarters are relatively quiet, too quiet in fact. From the Guard's comments, most of the trouble is occurring in the Hindquarter where many of the elves have moved to.
Crossing the bridge to the Cathedral of Light is like passing into an island of calm. The only sign is that there are slightly more people seeking the services of the Healers.
Wealthy Quarter is also quiet, but that's probably due to the extra squads of Silver Swords on the streets. They're moving northwards when Shadow spots someone quietly motioning to them. Looking closer, Shadow sees that it's Lukas, the leader of the Swords who arrested them.
Seeing that Shadow has spotted him, Lukas approaches the party. Everyone sees that he is clutching a paper in his hand. Nearing them, he holds it towards them. The paper shows rough illustrations of the other two thieves who were with Geordie.
"Recognize anyone?"
Arm Wednesday March 29th, 2006 5:46:58 AM
Arm grips Mira's arm warmly, glad for the comfort of her company. Perhaps when and if the situation calms down some...
As they come upon Lukas and he sees the paper he is holding, Arm quickly identifies the two theives, "Yes, those two were with Geordie, so we can only assume that they were involved as well. If we should spot them, we'll either 'detain' them or send word to you of their location.".
Shadow d20+5=25 Wednesday March 29th, 2006 9:37:09 AM
Shadow will nod his head as he sees Lukas and watches as he approaches the group. He listens as the silver sword asks about the drawings, and he shakes his head in acknowledgment as he asks if the group recognizes the two thieves. "We will keep an eye out for the two, but I do not think you are the only ones looking for those two." (spot=25)
Kadaz Wednesday March 29th, 2006 3:56:41 PM
Kadaz glances at the drawing. "What he said" is his only comment, nodding in Shadow's direction.
Mira Wednesday March 29th, 2006 4:11:05 PM
Pushing her glasses up her nose, Mira brings her face closer to the parchment and examines the likenesses. Staightening up, she nods in the affirmative. "If we happen to see them, we will effect a citizens arrest and turn them over to the nearest guards."
Mira secretly hopes the Silver Swords or the city guards collect the goons first. The sorcerer figures some of her party might take out their frustration on the two, and the bullies from the Defense LEague might not survive the encounter!
Lukas' Question (DM JohnP) Wednesday March 29th, 2006 10:07:14 PM
Lukas nods when members of the party recognize the sketches. When Arm mentions that the two were with Geordie looks up with concern.
"Really? These two were seen leaving the Temple of Flower shortly before Tredegar was found dead. There were with this Geordie fellow who's in the post?"
Shadow's keen eye spots copies of the flyer posted on walls and clusters of people staring at the flyer.
"Oh yes, lots of people are looking for these two," Lukas chuckles darkly. "We're just out here making sure that they don't sneak into our Quarters. Don't even think of turning them over to us," he cautions Mira. "We don't need that sort of trouble."
"Any idea where they might be hiding?"
Mira Wednesday March 29th, 2006 11:23:20 PM
Mira holds on tight to Arm and volunteers what she knows about the dirty apartment on the narrow street in the northern part of the Trade Quarter. "North off Gauntlet Street, behind the Flying Fish tavern," she explains hoping her directions are good enough.
Arm Thursday March 30th, 2006 5:48:35 AM
Arm's eyes turn steely at the suggestion that the two were involved in Tredegar's demise, "We should have killed them when we had the chance," he mutters. He continues to Lukas, "If we find them, it'll be a sad day indeed for them. If you'll excuse us, we're off to the temple to see what information we may gather.".
After they take their leave, Arm says to Mira, "Let us make haste to the temple and find out what we can. Then I, for one, am off to that stinking hovel that we first found them in.".
OOC: There's a good chance I may not be posting tomorrow...we're moving AND getting a new ISP on top of it. :( If everything is running smoothly, I'll send something on Saturday.
Kadaz Thursday March 30th, 2006 7:37:31 AM
"So these two may have been invovled in the priest's murder. We'll definately look out for them. Thank you for the information." He looks at the Silver Swords and nods his thanks again as he leaves.
Conner Thursday March 30th, 2006 7:58:57 AM
Conner looks at the drawings and says nothing, but the angle of his jaw changes as he clenches his teeth, and if one were to observe his hands they would see the whitened knuckles of his clenched fists.
Shadow Thursday March 30th, 2006 9:13:27 AM
"They could also be holed up in Lady Ilonia's mansion, also." Shadow suggests. He is not envious of the two thieves, but does want justice to occur. "Let's go check out their old hidey hole, but not sure what to do after that."
Back Again (DM JohnP) Thursday March 30th, 2006 1:47:54 PM DM Note - Everyone has posted, so I decided to do this early.
Lukas looks across at Mira, besides Kadaz, the only member of the party that he doesn't look up at. He sneers when she provides a location where the two thieves might be hiding.
"Take it to the guards, not me. I simply don't want those two and their Geordie friend in my streets, is all."
Lukas turns to leave but then looks back at the party.
"I don't like being played for a fool. And I don't like apologizing, either. But I do owe all of you something for your troubles. Don't press your luck, though, when you want something."
The short leader of the Silver Swords turns and walks back to his squads. The party looks at his stiff back and at the way that his right hand caresses the sword hilt at his waist. Obviously a man tightly wound. He's not alone, though. Arm, Kadaz and Conner all look like they'd like to get their hands on the pair of thieves.
Arm suggests going on to the Temple of Flower. Shadow talks about going back to the apartment where they first confronted the trio. But not before suggesting that the pair might be sheltering with Lady Ilonia. The suggestion seem plausible: they and Geordie had first stolen the necklace for her; and, Geordie tried to pin the theft onto the party, presumably for her.
While everyone digests that thought, they stand in the streets. Even this far from the Temple of Flower, they can hear the angry crowds that have gathered. With everything that has happened, it seems that Plateau City is a fireball bead ready to explode. On top of all the deaths from the awakening of the Fey King, who knows how many would die if full-scale rioting was triggered.
Mira d20+2=7 d20+2=21 Thursday March 30th, 2006 10:00:17 PM
"The temple first?" Mira says, hoping to catch the fighters' attention. "If Geordie's goons are still around, we can hunt them down later." Mira will keep a hand lightly on the bard's arm, but she lets him lead and becomes wary as they approach the temple. The sorcerer looses the strings of the pouch holding her spell components.

Conner d20+3=8 d20+4=6 Thursday March 30th, 2006 10:55:27 PM
"I agree, the temple first" growls the fighter. "Perhaps they know something of this death cult". Conner maintains a position on the flank of the group. His shield is readied and his free hand never wanders far from his sword as he walks beside the group.
The thought of the two thieves killing an innocent cleric has his blood up, and he does not maintain the vigilance he should as he moves through the streets. [Spot=6, Listen=8]
Kadaz Friday March 31st, 2006 7:23:58 AM
Kadaz adds his voice. "Temple first, then the apartment. But if we don't find those 2 thieves by then, is Lady Ilonia's place next? I think we may have more trouble getting in there now than we did before."
Shadow d20+5=7 Friday March 31st, 2006 11:02:41 AM
Shadow will follow the group towards the temple. He will keep watch to see if he can see the two thieves. (spot=7)
To the Temple of Flower (DM JohnP) Sunday April 2nd, 2006 10:57:49 PM
The party heads north through Wealthy Quarter towards the Temple of Flower which lies just inside Gold Quarter. Mira is trying to keep a lid on the more ... physical ... of the party members, hoping to avoid a fight.
Conner and Kadaz agree. At the very least, Conner suggests, they might know something of the death cult. Shadow and Arm move along in the fighters' wake. Everyone is distracted as they move through the streets approaching the Temple. Frm the sounds, many people are gathered near the Temple.
The boundary between Wealthy Quarter and Gold Quarter is marked by the many Silver Swords on guard duty. They seem to be checking the status of anyone who wants to enter Wealthy Quarter and turn back several people. Some of these people seem to displeased but the gathered assembly of guards dissuades anything more than mutters.
From where they stand, the party can see a huge crowd outside the Temple of Flower. For the number of people it is surprisingly quiet. At a distance, the crowd seems to contain a cross section of the populace of Plateau City - wealthy and poor, powerful and weak and every race as well.
The party is trying to decide whether to try to get closer to the Temple when a couple nearly run into them. If they do, they might have to take a different route back.
An expectant buzz runs through the crowd outside the Temple. The taller members of the party can barely see a tall figure clad in white robes step through the gates of the Temple. He begins speaking but the party cannot hear very much until slowly every member of the crowd falls quiet.
".... unexpected gesture of gratitude and appreciation. Those of you who met Tredegar would know what he would think, though."
A quiet murmur of laughter comes from the crowd.
"Do not stand here. Go out and commit some act in memory of Tredegar and Flower, the goddess that he served. He is with Flower now and acting with compassion and love is what is right and proper."
"The path of revenge and hate is not the path of Flower. Ignore those who counsel violence and retribution. Kindness and generosity is how all of you should honour Tredegar's memory. Anything else plays into the hands of those who would destroy this city and its people."
"Go now! Remember Tredegar with your hands and efforts."
The speaker, presumably the new high priest of Flower, is persuasive. The crowd begins to break up and move away.
Mira d20+2=20 d20+2=22 Monday April 3rd, 2006 12:11:27 AM
Mira unconsiously pats her pouches. Have to be careful in a crowd like this, she thinks. Then the words drift over the crowd from the direction of the temple.
Random acts of kindness... thinks Mira. She doesn't know much about this god, Flower, but obviously her followers are a pacifist lot.
"Arm? Do you see an opening in the crowd? If you can, lead to the temple. Perhaps we could have a word with this new priest?" While waiting to move into a gap made by the vacating crowd, Mira wonders at the message conveyed by the priest. Should they turn around? she wonders, then thinks better of it. Someone has got to look after these super-nice types. Mira looks at her friends, and a smile creeps across her face.

Arm d20+4=17 d20+11=15 d20+9=28 Monday April 3rd, 2006 5:51:43 AM
Taking Mira's hand, Arm quickly finds a hole and leads the way to the temple(spot=17). Along the way, he removes his hat, finally glad that he doesn't have to hide his elven heritage and hoping that it may actually aid them in gathering information. While they approach, he keeps an ear open for anything useful (listen=15).
When they arrive at the temple proper, Arm seeks out the new high priest and says, "We apologize for not arriving sooner, as we were detained elsewhere. My friends and I are deeply sorry for your loss, but as you said, Tredegar is with Flower now. Can you please tell us what happened? (diplomacy=28)".
Shadow d20+5=10 Monday April 3rd, 2006 4:25:40 PM
Shadow will move quickly when Arm starts leading Mira towards the temple. He is scanning the crowd for familiar (both friendly and not friendly) faces to see who is here. (Spot=10)
Kadaz Monday April 3rd, 2006 8:40:24 PM
Under his breath Kadaz mutters to himself. "Talks pretty. But can he fight?" But he straightens up, smiles at the strangers near him, and tries not to look threatening.
As Arm escorts Mira towards the priest Kadaz follows, pushing his way through as necessary. "Wait up" he yells at Arm's butt. This is the problem with being 4' tall in a crowd of humans - can't see anything.
Conner Monday April 3rd, 2006 10:12:15 PM
The burly fighter pushes through the crowds, creating a hole for his companions to follow.
Temple of Flower (DM JohnP) Monday April 3rd, 2006 10:56:32 PM
Following behind Arm and Conner, the party moves through the crowds outside the Temple of Flower. It would be even more difficult if a significant portion of the crowd hadn't left already.
While they move forward, Mira and everyone else is watchful. Kadaz almost gets left behind but Shadow pulls him along. As they near the temple, they overhear people reminiscing about Tredegar. Despite the speaker's words, there are still some people looking to avenge Tredegar.
"Probably them Defense League idiots. Who else would do it?"
"Nah, it was probably some cultist."
"Maybe another elf, angry that Tredegar had started repairing a lot of what their King did to the City."
Eventually the party reaches the gates of the Temple. The gates are guarded today contrary to what they recall is normal practice. The guards look out of place guarding the temple of the deity of love and the family. But they do seem capable.
When Arm asks to speak to the high priest, the guards refuse to admit anyone.
"Sorry. Clerics only today, I'm afraid. At least until the funeral rites are set."
They also do not respond when Arm asks about the morning's events. However, several of the people loitering in the square are willing to talk.
"Saw it all, I did," says one of the old men who was standing nearby.
"No you didn't, you fool. You was barely here," says the other.
"Well, I did. Who was the one that the guards talked to? It was me."
"Ya, after I told 'em that you was closer when the two men ran out."
"Well, I saw them two humans run out. I could describe them, couldn't I?"
"Ya, but it was me that saw them inside. They came in like they was going for morning prayer. But they went rhough the main sanctuary into the nave where Tredegar was praying. Then I heard him cry out. Looked over and saw the blades flashing as they stabbed him."
The first speaker takes over now. "The two of them ran out, nearly right over me. Blood still dripping from their weapons, it was."
The second speaks once more. "I would have thought that Tredegar could survive that. But they were supposed to have used poison."
The two old men trail off. Each of them look at the party, expecting something for their tale. Mira and Arm feel that the two are speaking truth, at least as they know it.
Mira d20+8=21 d20+7=23 Monday April 3rd, 2006 11:24:47 PM
Mira decides not to push her luck with the guards, but prods the old geezers for a description of the two 'humans' they saw running from the temple. Placing a gold piece in the hand of one, she folds his fingers around the coin. "For your invaluable information," she says. (Diplomacy=21, Gather Information=23)
Though the sorcerer would sorely love to learn what she can of the relationship of the Fey King to the cult of Flower, she leaves it for another day.
"Shall we seek out Geordie's friends then?" she asks her companions.
Arm d20+9=18 Tuesday April 4th, 2006 5:50:51 AM
Arm's butt doesn't hear Kadaz, but his ears do, and he slows down somewhat so that his diminutive friend can catch up, but not too much so that his nose doesn't enter what he was speaking to.
Arm takes a gold piece and holds it out for the other old gentleman as he says, "Yes, thank you very much (diplomacy=18).". He then motions the others to move away, and says in response to Mira, "Yes, let's pay a visit to our old friends, as they have much to answer for (if their description matches that of the old men, that is).". Turning away, he allows Kadaz and Shadow to take the lead. As they walk, he places an arm around Mira's shoulders and tries to catch her eye to see what feelings are there, "I don't expect to replace Evan, but I can hope that we can begin something of our own," he murmurs softly to her.
Shadow d20+5=24 d20+2=4 Tuesday April 4th, 2006 10:19:43 AM
Shadow will listen as the two men give their descriptions of the two, but he is sure he already knows what they will say. (Listen=4, spot=24)
Kadaz Tuesday April 4th, 2006 10:21:11 PM
Kadaz listens carefully to the two old men telling their story. "The blades they used, were they daggers or longer? And was there anything special about them?" he asks. "And did you notice them before they killed Tredegar or only afterwards?"
In the Plaza (DM JohnP) Tuesday April 4th, 2006 10:43:10 PM Mira and Arm both press coins into the hands of the old men who related their tale. But before they do, Kadaz has some more questions.
The second man, the one who was inside, looks at the dwarf and scratches his scraggly beard.
"No, didn't notice the weapons before they attacked Tredegar. Daggers, I think. Or maybe shortswords, I couldn't really tell."
After receiving the coins, the two men nod their thanks. Each of them move away from the party, tucking the coins away some place in their clothing.
Shadow and Kadaz lead the party away. Conner trails behind the others, wondering how this cycle of violence will end.
There's still many people here but they feel alone in the square. Everyone seems to agree that they should go to check if the two thieves are in their apartment. The Silver Swords wanted to keep people from going through Wealthy Quarter. They could probably use the "favour" that Lukas owes them but it would be simpler to head east into Gladiator Park.
Arm Wednesday April 5th, 2006 5:52:54 AM
Arm heads toward Gladiator Park, hoping that once these two are dispatched, some measure of calm can once again come over the city. With the recent events, however, that is probably a longshot at best.
Shadow Wednesday April 5th, 2006 10:45:00 AM
Shadow will move along quickly to the thieves apartments, he also has the feelin this will be a mute point because he doubts they will be there. Once they arrive, Shadow will say, "We need to make sure we are ready just in case they are here, but I doub it."
Kadaz d20+1=2 Wednesday April 5th, 2006 4:50:18 PM
Kadaz head east into Gladiator Park saying over his shoulder "Let's not push our luck with the Silver Swords just yet." He keeps his eye out for trouble but just barely sees the ground in front of him (spot 2)
Conner d20+4=18 d20+3=18 Wednesday April 5th, 2006 6:57:01 PM
Conner keeps pace with the group as they make their way back across town yet again. [Spot=18, Listen=18]
Mira d20+2=4 Wednesday April 5th, 2006 10:37:06 PM
Wordlessly, Mira twines her arm around the bards waist, and returns the squeeze...before letting go. "Let's make tracks, fellas," she says, as she follows the fighters through the streets.

Back to the Tenement (DM JohnP) Wednesday April 5th, 2006 10:45:27 PM
The party treks through the streets of Plateau City, through the parks that surround the Gladiatorial Arena. As Arm and the others move through Gladiator Park, they can see groups of people gathering. When they get close, the party realizes that this is the first time in the past several days that they've seen groups of elves. One or two groups approach but back off when they see Arm's face and ears. Still, some of the elves glare when they see Mira holding the bard's arm. Guard patrols move through the Quarter, breaking up the smaller groups and getting the others to move along. The Guard seems most interested in keeping the groups of elves from getting too close to some of the humans and others who are filtering away from the Temple of Flower.
Shadow and Kadaz follow along, the dwarf stumbling as he goes. Conner also follows in the half-elf's wake. After crossing the width of Gladiator Quarter, the party is able to cross a bridge back to Merchant Quarter. Once they're on the correct side of the river, it isn't too long of a trip until they are back into the Trade Quarter. After threading his way through the confusing tangle of allies in the north end of the Quarter, Arm leads everyone to the tenement where they first encountered Geordie and the two other thieves.
From the street, all looks quiet. There are people passing in the street and the scullery boys at the back of the Flying Fish tavern are cleaning up after the lunch rush. Which reminds everyone that it's been a while since they ate.
The dark and dank hallway of the tenement is open before the party. As before, not much can be seen inside from the street.
Arm Thursday April 6th, 2006 5:49:12 AM
Arm smiles warmly at Mira, then realizes that such conversations should be held in private, and concentrates on the task at hand. As they move toward the Trade Quarter, he notices some of the glares sent his and Mira's way, and he wishes that they would take the high road in this and realize that they'd be just as wrong as the humans for feeling like they do.
Once they arrive near the apartment, Arm looks to the rest, and says, "I don't know whether a stealthy approach is necessary. Personally, I say we just make our way down and be done with it.".
