At some point in the early morning, as the drizzle outside becomes heavy rain, chilling the air that finds it's way into the Lair - Mop rises, dresses quickly and scurries off, for there are lackeys to organize, fires to light, breakfasts to see to, not to mention checking on his master. Life as Parnoth's number two is never dull, although he'll be glad when the Dragons have vacated his rooms. He's convinced they've knocked over some of his stuff, and re-arranged everything, and that thought proves to be horribly irritating.
Soon, the smell of fresh bread trails through the door. It's morning. And there are plans to make, places to go, people to see.
Valdor Wednesday March 1st, 2006 11:08:37 AM
Valdor rises early as normal, walks around a bit, then finds a place to loosen up and practice with his swords. He doesn't completely exhaust himself, but he goes through his normal routine.
After he's done, he looks for something to eat. He walks around surveying the weather and thinks about where they are going.
He goes back to the group and asks everyone if they need anything in particular for their trip. He gets directions to a clothing and outfitting store and gathers the necessary cloaks, boots, rope and other necessary gear for swampy conditions.
Corialote and Amarth Wednesday March 1st, 2006 8:28:19 PM
Cori wakes the next morning with only one thought and that is to study her spellbook for a few hours. She takes a portion of breakfast and then moves off to the side of the group to do some studying. Amarth sits perched on her shoulder seeming to study from there and once in awhile making a suggestion.
She shares her morning meal with her raven as she nods her head several times and agrees on some ideas. Once the two break down into a heated arguement about a certain spell but it ends with Cori rapping Amarth on the beak and telling him to shut up. Though two minutes later the bird is back to giving advice again.
Mordrid Wednesday March 1st, 2006 8:57:57 PM
Upon waking, Mordrid takes a hike up the rise that rests above Parnoth's lair. He settles in to a crouch and peers down at the valley below, contemplating an encounter with Korrig. Why had the assassin taken it upon himself to make his stand now? What was the significance of this occasion? Why were his comrads seemingly numb to the death of Valdor's daughter? And Cori he could understand. The impending return to Osto brought the ranger closer to feelings he had not had for many, many years. After several hours of soul searching the ranger returns to the mouth of the lair. How strange a place to be. There he waits for the coming and goings of others.
Should we fly in on the wings of parnoth? That would be impressionable.
Dahlia Thursday March 2nd, 2006 12:19:26 AM
Rested but not necessarily at ease, Dahlia feels a loss of control in her life that she hasn't felt in a long time.
Recognizing tht Mop is neurotic about where his things are, she purposely walks around aimlessly picking things up and putting them down in other places just to return them to their original place eventually. All this time she watches the others lookign for the tell tale signs of their stressors.
Nick Thursday March 2nd, 2006 12:47:31 AM
Nick looks down at his robes. "Maybe just a dark, sober cloak would do the trick. Nothing else," says Nick as Valdor asks about gear. "To be honest I'm not quite sure what to expect."
Nick's ready to go, having spent time in the spiritual presence of his God, he's about as settled as he'll ever be on this trip.
DM Jan Thursday March 2nd, 2006 1:19:26 AM
As folk are only just returning to their homes after the evacuation, Valdor's going to be lucky to find anything open in town. An alternative of course would be a lightning fast jaunt to Plateau City and back.... or everyone just going as they are. ((Folks, let me know.))
Parnoth can be found pacing around in his treasure cavern, back in human form, grumbling something about the thieves taking the more 'liquid' aspects of his treasure - gems, coins, coronets, gold boxes. "Easy to move," he huffs. "They've got heads on their shoulders. With brains in them."
It is his intention to move out as soon as possible, and expresses this opinion in straight forward terms, adding - "I will travel like this, I think. Element of surprise." He stands waiting, very much like a creature used to being waited on. Assuming much.
Corialote and Amarth Thursday March 2nd, 2006 9:34:34 PM
Cori makes her way back over to the rest of the group and then looks around. "What is the first part of our plan?" She feels that she is at least partially ready with her spells.
She silently hopes that she has packed the right spells to deal with almost anything that can be thrown at them.
Amarth looks around the cave from his Mistress's shoulder seeming to be as prepared as he can be as well.

Valdor Friday March 3rd, 2006 12:55:43 AM
Valdor shows back up and sees Parnoth pacing. He says,"Well, gold and gems are easy to replace. It's artifacts and serious magic items that are difficult. Anyway, I'll gather everyone and we'll get going. We can teleport there and get close enough to attempt a scry. They know we're coming. They may or may not expect you.
We may not be friends, nor probably ever will be, but I will try to help you get back what is yours. It's likely that this bunch has a hoard of gold and gems of their own, with yours added to it. However, my first priority is the people...just thought you should know that I will help you, whether you need it or not."
He goes and finds everyone and thanks Mop for his hospitality and prepares to leave. He hands Mordrid the ring and says,"Whatever your doubts or issues, it has been many years. I doubt you will be recognized my friend. I leave it up to you where to land us. Let's hit them hard and fast my brother."

Nick gathers with the others after his morning prayer session, feeling about as ready as he'll ever be, and if they're going in as they were, authoritively, with no skulking around - well so be it. His main worry right now is Parnoth, who seemed to have the word 'unpredictable' stamped on his forehead.
DM Jan Monday March 6th, 2006 1:54:25 AM
The ring in Mordrid's hands....
It draws on memory, recollections of sights, smells, sound, taste and touch, pulling at every sense in order to fabricate the way. It is a thirty five year old memory that punches a hole in time and space, and carries the Platinum Dragons, and a dragon, to their destination. And -
Feet slide a little on the muddy cobbles. There is a wet chill in the air, and a mist that shrouds the surroundings, making them seem fuzzy and out of focus. There is a strong smell of woodsmoke, animals and rotting vegetation. The buildings here seem close together, and their second floors overhang, and in some cases they connect with their opposites by way of overhead wooden bridges and archways. The buildings close out much of the morning light, making it seem almost like dusk.
As for noise, a particularly bawdy song is being sung - somewhere through an upstairs window, and there is a general clamour - people, carts, traffic - coming from left and right.
The Dragons appear to be in some kind of side street, in between two main thoroughfares. About 20ft away, stands a man wearing a roughly woven cloak. He has some kind of lizard on a leash, and he is staring at the group, utterly astonished. "@#)*(&% me!" he says. He sounds a bit like Mordrid, or perhaps how Mordrid might sound if he ever uttered such expletives. As for the ranger - this is what he remembered, but it is amplified. More, more, more. His hometown has been growing.
And Parnoth? His overall air of disapproval is palpable.
Valdor d20+38=48 Monday March 6th, 2006 1:49:13 PM
Valdor is on the man in the blink of an eye. He avoids the lizard. He grasps the man by his cloak and hoists him into the air, just off his feet so he can't run off. He says,"I already hate your smelly town and want to leave it, so tell me what I want to know and I'll be kind to you. I am looking for Korrig the Stalker. I know you have heard of him and probably know where he and his ilk hide. Tell me where we can find him and his followers and it's a hundred platinum in your pocket and I'll leave you be and tell noone you told us."

Dahlia Monday March 6th, 2006 4:43:17 PM
As soon as they are arrived Dahlia activates her wand turning her invisible before anyone gets a full count of who actually arrived. stepping off to the right side of the street and against the wall, the little halfling begins to scann the rooftops.
Nick Monday March 6th, 2006 10:56:32 PM
"So this is Osto?" asks Nick, sniffing the air. "Quite bracing." Watching Valdor and Ve break right and left, and Dahlia disappear, Nick stays put, stays visible, and keeps his eye on Parnoth.
DM Jan Tuesday March 7th, 2006 1:49:08 AM
"Aaaaaaahhhhh - " yells the man with the lizard, his scream ceasing abruptly as the magic words a hundred platinum are mentioned. The lizard, unused to the likes of Valdor, is yanking hard on it's leash, it's tail whipping furiously around the warrior's feet. "Whu - K-Korrig you say! Don't know nothing about any ilk, but I heard some of his men hang out in the Tanners Quarter." He points toward the end of the street Ve is heading for. "You don't wanna mess with Korrig, or maybe you do, but I wouldn't if I were you. Folk don't live long if they mess with Korrig. Platinum, you say?"
Dahlia flashes out of sight and, pressing against the wall, gets a good view of the opposite roof. The shingle is partially hidden by mist and wood smoke, but it looks clean - no one waiting to pounce. She can see the open window on the upper storey of the building opposite, which is where the song is coming from.
Ve makes his way to the opposite end of the street and emerges onto a busy road. If passers-by are curious about him, they hide it well. Their pale, solumn faces are in distinct contrast to the varied populace of Plateau City. This many people in Plateau would be making more noise, calling out, laughing, chattering. With the occasional exception, things here appear muted. In the misty streets, a kind of stoicism seems to prevail, and folk dressed soberly in greys, greens and browns, go about their business, minding their own and no one elses. Most folk that is. Was that someone staring, then running off down the alley opposite?
Nick can see that Parnoth is cheered up a little by Valdor 'interviewing' one of the locals. He also see's the dragon's eyes shift sharply toward the lizard, and then Parnoth's lips start to move. But if he's saying anything, it's beyond Nick's hearing range. Odd though, how the lizard stops pitching and thrashing. Instead, it comes to stand at the end of it's leash, looking toward Parnoth, and it's long sliver of a tongue flicks out, testing the scent in the air.
Valdor Tuesday March 7th, 2006 2:23:55 AM
Valdor smiles a mirthless smile as the man spills his guts. His blue eyes pierce into the man and he replies too coldly,"People that mess with Valdor the Dragonslayer don't live long either...which is what Korrig has done. Here's your money. You'll probably be dead before the end of the day, so I'd take it and get out of town. I wouldn't go running to Korrig's men either. That would be bad for your health."
He sets the man down and turns without a glance. He tells the others,"I'd say Ve is on the right track. Let's go have some fun."

"Valdor, do we happen to have a spare earpiece for Ve? It might be helpful. Mordrid, you want to take the low road while I take the high? I was thinking the rooftops might make a good highway."
Nick Tuesday March 7th, 2006 8:03:55 PM
Nick raises an eyebrow toward the lizard, but says nothing to the dragon. It probably didn't mean anything. However, Dahlia's comment has him looking gingerly up toward the rooftops, then he remembers something.
"Mordrid, do you still have that piece of paper you got from the dead man? "
DM Jan Wednesday March 8th, 2006 1:47:04 AM
The man 'conversing' with Valdor takes the cash like he can't believe it's real, or maybe it's because he's getting out of this in one piece. "Val Dor the Dragonslayer," he says. "Right." Valdor leaves the man staring wildly at the contents of a coin purse, while the creature on a leash continues to stare at Parnoth.
On the other side of the main street, magic flashes toward the fleeing human - a young man, with maybe eighteen years on him, sporting a straggly goatee and clothing to match. Off balance when the Hold Person spell took hold, he falls onto the alley pavement and lies there at an odd angle. Ve, the spellcaster, feels a jolt when the spell takes effect. The kind of jolt that feels good, like an inner, momentary power surge.
And whereas Dahlia felt nothing unusual when she went invisible, Cori has a moment of disorientation as she flashes out of sight - as though her head and hands detached from her body for a moment.
Parnoth snorts loftily at Dahlia's suggestion of the roof and sets off with a deliberate stride in Ve's direction, fully expecting to arrive there before Valdor does.
About seven feet away from Mordrid is a grate. It's about two feet square, in the middle of the street, and water can be seen running about six feet below it.
Valdor Wednesday March 8th, 2006 10:43:01 AM
Valdor sets off at a striding pace. His legs carry him quickly to catch up with Ve and Parnoth. He makes no effort to hide himself nor his identity. DM Jan Wednesday March 8th, 2006 11:47:50 PM
The man with the lizard moves off and disappears around a corner.
The Dragons move across the street, in the general direction of the Tanners District, and more particularly, toward the young man on the ground. They get the occasional furtive glance as they cross the street, but no outright stares. Folk are either being polite or they just don't care, or maybe following a custom. There's no doubt that the group stands out (those visible at least). Only Mordrid fits right in.
In answer to Ve's question, the man grunts - "Let me go. I can run if I want to." His voice carries a defiant tone.
Up on the rooftops, with the exception of the occasional cat curled up against a warm chimmney, Dahlia is on her own, and when the smoke and mist clears in patches, she can see right across town. Funny how easy it is to traverse these rooftops. She finds makeshift gantrys here and there; ropes hanging over walls, pins hammered into the higher inclines.
Parnoth comes to a standstill alongside Valdor, Ve and the fallen man, and he folds his arms and looks on expectantly.
As Cori settles into her invisibility, she becomes aware of something; like she is really pushed back from reality, as though the invisibility is stronger. There's a pull to it, beckoning deeper, toward a precipice of complete obliteration.
Mordrid Thursday March 9th, 2006 4:07:12 AM
The ranger catches sight of the low grate in the alley, glancing down thru it longingly. Looking up again he sees his group moving defiantly forward. 'My suggestion to be bold? Remind me not to do that again.'
Mordrid jogs up to Valdor ahead, "Get what you need out of that punk. Then let me find a fence (by fence, the group would know he means a jeweler / pond shop)."
The ranger puts a foot on the captured young man's chest, pushing his shead harshly against the cobble-stone, "Listen hear, time is short... it's one of those days... you know... when you have to choose to live another day or not. Sorry good fellow. You understand... sometimes you just end up in the middle of something bigger than you." the ranger looks to Ve as if to say, 'why is my foot on this guy's chest?'
Ve Mundr Thursday March 9th, 2006 11:27:15 AM

Dahlia Thursday March 9th, 2006 10:13:08 PM
Hearing Cori cry out through her earpiece, Dahlia pauses in her travels.
"Cori, What's wrong?" "Someone, something is wrong with Cori."

Nick frowns, after what comes through the earpiece, and hopefully spots Cori as she appears. He'll dash over. "Cori, what is it?"
DM Jan Friday March 10th, 2006 12:45:04 AM
The man gurgles as Mordrid's boot pushes him against the dirty cobbles, but despite the fact that he has Ve, Mordrid, Parnoth and Valdor hovering above him, the defiance remains and he seems to take a few breaths, to gather his thoughts, and calm his fears. His voice comes out slow and steady, or as slow and steady as it's able. "I saw you. Appear in the alley. You didn't exactly arrive. Through the main gate. Did you. There are men. In taverns down the street. Who'll maybe pay. For that kind of information."
"Kill him," says Parnoth, like he's asking someone to go out and buy groceries.
Cori's physical being flashes back into existance, on the face of it with nothing amiss. Mentally however, it's more like a wrench - like pulling a foot out of deep mud. Something appeared to have underpinned and enhanced her spell. Power. Scary, scary, scary power. As wild as Woldsblood itself, seemed to have heard the siren call of her spell, and it came, and it gave. Gave her more. And it didn't want to let go. As she re-orients herself, there's a trace of it - an esoteric tendril, shrinking downward, and off to the east.
Ve's Protection from Energy spell roars into being - the effective word being 'roars'. Although no one else appears to be able to, he can actually 'see' the protective aura around him, prickly and strong, pushing all fears aside and punching at his adrenalin. It's a rush, and a good one. With power such as this, why he could...
On the rooftops, with Osto spread out below, Dahlia can see the way ahead getting more congested - more buildings, more people, more chimmneys, more smoke. The way to the Tanners Section seems to go through a market. Where Mordrid might find his fence.
Valdor Friday March 10th, 2006 1:54:42 AM
Valdor, not wanting Parnoth to have the satisfaction of getting an order fulfilled, simply says,"It's hard to spend money if you're dead. And if you think they are scary enough to report to, you haven't seen the Platinum Dragons when they are mad. Feel free to tell them Valdor the Dragonslayer is here...and he is coming for their very souls. Let him go Mordrid. We needn't kill him. Korrig's men will do that when we arrive and tell them he showed us where they are."
His words are spoken so coldly, you would think that he actually wants that to happen, and expects it as well.
Ve Mundr Friday March 10th, 2006 11:28:55 AM To touch the face of god, he would cloak himself in rightousness and in his sword arm he would wield justice. the warning the old bishop issued to his newest monsingor resounded in Ve's mind now. And how much more would flesh give to satisfy itself. It was his responce then and it remained so now. His eyes drifted down to his arm, clad in mithrial and divine power, yes there was something here. A witch he once knew called it a lay line when he maipulated such energies beyond normal boundary. Perhaps Osto was upon similar such things. Ve looks over at Cori a grim understanding on his face. He ignores Parnoth and bites back the retort he would deliver.
"Cori" he takes a knee next to the wizardess. "What spell? What did you see and feel? I can feel almost a calling to power here. Like the direct touch of Domi himself." Ve looks back over his shoulder to Vlador and Mordrid, "If we are storming in like the hand of Domi we should continue. The spell will where off eventually."

Cori looks up into the face of Nick, Ve and Mordrid in turn. There is a look of pure terror in her eyes and on her face, but deep down you can also see a hunger. "It was power...to much power and the seduction of going totally with my spell." She glances to Ve and visibly trembles. "It was a greater invisibility...I felt a pull to step over a cliff and into that spell...I do not know if I would simply vanish for good or be invisible for ever." She once again shiver as she slowly gets to her feet, a wild look still upon her face. "I also can see a tendril moving to the east and down...it was connected to my spell...almost sentient and unwilling to let go." As she swallows hard she falls into a meditative state for a few seconds...she needed to calm herself.

Nick Sunday March 12th, 2006 10:42:08 PM
Nick glances toward Valdor for a moment, as the welfare of their prisoner crops up, but trusting that nothing terrible is about to happen, his attention goes back to Cori. While Ve asks the questions about what she has seen, he concentrates on her physically, taking her hand (feels normal, or cold and clammy?), watching her breathing (normal or shallow?). He's looking for symptoms of shock, which could be dangerous. The fact that he's a little wary right now of just firing off a healing spell goes unsaid, but it's echoed in a worried look he gives to Ve.
To keep things lighthearted, he winks at the bird on the drow mage's shoulder and then he holds his hand up, three fingers extended.
"Cori, how many fingers am I holding up?"
DM Jan Sunday March 12th, 2006 10:59:25 PM
The man on the ground lets out a groan of relief as Mordrid's boot lifts from his face. Still prone on the ground, held by the spell, he is unable to look at anyone in particular, but he says - "Maybe I can help you. For a small fee. You mention Korrig. Are you friends of his?" He finishes his sentence with resounding cough and splutter.
"Perhaps you should be using your new title," Parnoth says tightly to Valdor, "Dragonstone?" He's trying VERY hard to hide the fact that Valdor's continued use of the word 'Dragonslayer' is bugging the heck out of him.
The invisible tendril, that so very recently had it's grip around Cori's psyche, shrinks away to nothing, like it was never there. She feels a whole lot better. Ve's spell on himself continues to seduce, making him feel invincible.
All around, city life in Osto continues as normal. For the moment, anyone approaching quietly veers out of the way and goes about their business.
Mordrid Monday March 13th, 2006 2:04:13 AM
The ranger looks at Parnoth coldly. "A name is what other people call you. It is not who you are. You of ALL people should understand this."
Then Mordrid responds to their captured runner before anyone else gets a chance to bend the truth, "NO, Korrig is not our friend. We intend to kill him. Has nothing to do with you getting rich or not."
Towards his companions, "we should move out ASAP. Not good to stay in one place too long. Surely this is not the only runner on the pay-role."
Valdor Monday March 13th, 2006 2:45:07 AM
Valdor is about to respond to Parnoth when Mordrid beats him to it. He says,"If I am known in these parts, it's probably by the name I told him. I know what my other title is and am proud of it. However, I have no qualms about them knowing we are here."
Valdor tosses a nice gem to the boy and says,"We don't intend to kill him, we will kill him. The only question is, how many people want to die getting in our way? Ve release the spell. If he runs, so be it. We'll kill him later. Or he can give us some info and get out of town for a while...which would be the wisest course of action."
Ve Mundr Monday March 13th, 2006 3:09:51 PM
Ve returns Father Nick's glance with an all to concerned look himself. The two men are certainly thinking on the same line. Though his own spells have certainly taken a different light than what Cori s feeling. The variables are many and the known facts to few. It would be an intersting dilema if it were not for the current circumstances.
Ve supresses a chuckle at Parnoths expense, they certainly knew the buttons to push. Valdor's directive to release the man brings a raised eyebrow, but nothing more. "Done." The cleric says evely as he stands agian.
"I agree with Mordrid, we should not tarry in one place. The more time the enemy has the more difficult this will be." Ve seems distracted to Father Nick, his vocalizations lack some of the strong commitment he has known to come from the Domi Heirophant in the past.

Nick Tuesday March 14th, 2006 12:07:00 AM
Nick's grin is one of relief. "Well, I was beginning to wonder if having to heal you might give you two heads or something," he says to Cori. "I can see we're going to have to exercise some caution, or at least prepare for the unexpected."
He's ready to move out with the others, although he is somewhat troubled. That was a minor scare with Cori, there was something unusual about Ve's demeanor, too - although he couldn't put his finger on exactly what. And with Mordrid and Valdor needling Parnoth, things were going to get very interesting. Ah well.
Curious, and hoping to distract the dragon with a question, he approaches Parnoth. "Are you able to sense anything strange about the magics in this area, your Excellency?" he asks.
DM Jan Tuesday March 14th, 2006 12:48:43 AM
Parnoth is about to lay into Mordrid verbally. That he should have to suffer this unspeakable ratbag-human's arrogance, is completely beyond him. He's got it all lined up. A nice little lecture about the arrogance of humanity in general, maybe a few personal insults, and then that blasted cleric wanders over. The magics? Ah yes. "It's nothing I can't handle," he answers Nick with a wicked smile, and leaves it at that. Distracted, his temper starts to lose it's edge, and thoughts of laying into the ranger make way for what lies ahead. Someone, somewhere had his treasure, and they were going to pay.
As the Hold Person spell loses it's grip on the young man on the ground, and he bounds to his feet, deftly catching the gem Valdor throws his way. "Kill Korrig? Well, well. I know someone else who wants to do that. They might be able to point you in the right direction. If you're interested. Your choice." He waits, on the off chance, but he'll not follow if the Dragons don't take him up on his offer.
Ahead, the streets narrow up, and the sounds of increased human traffic drift back toward the group. Up on the rooftops, a little ahead, Dahlia can see a street market below, and smells of bread, fruit and other stuffs rise up and mingle with the mists. But there's another scent, too. One of boiled bones and tanned hides, coming from the direction ahead of her.

Valdor Tuesday March 14th, 2006 9:39:27 PM
Valdor grins at Nick's disruption of Parnoth's apparent outburst. He winks at the dragon and nods to the young man and says, "Yes we are listening. Or, if we need to, following, but let's get off the street and go there. But, if this is a trap, I will slice you to ribbons...I promise. Or, you will be rewarded, as I have just done. The choice is yours."
He has a smile on his face, but his eyes tell a completely different story. And any street smart person wouldn't miss it.
DM Jan Wednesday March 15th, 2006 2:23:19 AM
The young man pockets the gem quickly and steps forward. "I'll take you to Mica (My-cah). Mica's men went missing on the Underground. The maze. Everyone reckons Korrig's at the back of it. There are things going on down there that no one wants to talk about." He shrugs. "Follow me. Mica can tell you more. I'm Edwin, by the way, and this is no trap." His eyes meet Valdor's and do not waver.
Edwin sets off into the thick of the market ahead - a busy, push and shove place, where market men call out, advertising their wares, and small gangs of tough-looking kids with light fingers and quick eyes, brush their way through the crowds.
Beyond that, a wider street that goes off at an angle. It looks to have a number of taverns on it, and Edwin looks to be heading for a ramshackle building that has a sign outside. "Tail of the Lizard" it proclaims. There's a scent here, of boiled bones and animal skins.
Valdor Wednesday March 15th, 2006 11:58:16 AM

((Folks - sincere apologies, but I have one of those horrid headaches again. Going to bed, and I'll pick this thing up first thing tomorrow morning))
Nick Thursday March 16th, 2006 1:28:40 PM
Nick walks alongside Cori, as some of the others take front and rear. There was no blood spilled yet, so that was good, although he's worried about Dahlia, who's up on the rooftops. Still, on the upside, this was a new place, a new discovery for him, and so he distracts himself by taking in as much of the surrounding scenery and people as he can.
DM Jan Thursday March 16th, 2006 2:19:12 PM
Having walked through a busy part of town, some of Osto's flavour is starting to sink further into the Dragons. This is an old City. Years of grit, grime and damp have painted the streets. Architecture is unfussy and dour, and in general the people here share similar traits with their home, expressed firmly in their clothing and manner. Well-seasoned adventurers that they are, even the Platinum Dragons stand out as a little too bright and gaudy. There will be no flambouyant Floating-City style mask parades here; no Plateau City circuses; no jolly village celebration festivals. However, despite the dreariness of it all, the people, clad in their servicable greys and blacks and browns, all wrapped up to keep the chill at bay, walk through the streets with a quiet dignity, and with their heads held high. Life here is extremely tough, but they are managing, thank you very much. Although Osto is famed for being a city of thieves, and where one is likely to loose his head as well as his wallet, it is the thieves' friends and relatives - mothers, sons, daughters, wives, uncles and grandfathers - carrying on impeccably ordinary lives, who are holding the City together. For every cutpurse, thug, smuggler, assassin and crime lord, there exists a carpenter, a builder, a housewife, and a gang of kids playing an innocent game of kick-ball out on the street. Cori even notices a magic store in the market, although it has a sign outside that says "Closed." As Ve scans the crowd for the inevitable pick pockets, he's given a tight nod of respect by children with ancient eyes. A mere glance and they've decided that he is definitely NOT a mark.
And so, having absorbed a little of the city's atmosphere, the interior of the Tail of the Lizard comes as no surprize. Bare stone floor, plain, solid furniture, with a lot of plain, solid men sat in groups, hunched over their ales, talking quietly to one another. As the Dragons enter, conversation stops for the count of one - two - three, and then starts where it left off. There are occasional glances, but no outright stares.
"Make yourself at home," says Edwin. "I'll go get Mica."
Behind the bar, a tall man, who's neck cords are standing out like he's been lifting beer barrels since the grand old age of two, says - "What can I get you?"
Parnoth, stood just inside the entrance, lets out a long, patient sigh. "What a dump," he grumbles.
Presumably still outside and on the rooftops, Dahlia has had chance to witness a little more of the city's underbelly, invisibly sneaking past huddled, clandestine meetings on slate roofs, kids gathered around, sharing out their latest cut-purse booty, and yes - the dragons below are being followed, by two men, and from their hostile glances at one another, both from different gangs.
Valdor Thursday March 16th, 2006 3:07:45 PM
Valdor follows and heads into the bar. He nods to the young man and replies to the bartender,"Ale will work for me."
He looks around and takes note of the people inside...their builds, if they're looking for more than just a second, and such.
Ve Mundr Thursday March 16th, 2006 5:32:32 PM
Ve gives a stern nod back to the boys. A nod that also says events may soon unfold that will reshape the very city. Stepping into the bar, Ve casts a glance back towards Parnoth and then dismisses it. Ve is several strides behind Valdor and leans into the wood next to him. "And one here as well." With a side eye look to Valdor, "Well this is going well so far. Might even have an ally soon or better yet, inside information."
Valdor Thursday March 16th, 2006 7:25:55 PM
Valdor grins and says,"Or a trap, regardless of what our young guide said. Be on your guard."
Nick Friday March 17th, 2006 1:40:29 AM
"I'll have a glass of water, please," asks Nick with an accomodating smile, sincerely hoping this wasn't the kind of place where anything other than ale was a sartorial offense.
DM Jan Friday March 17th, 2006 1:59:43 AM
The drinks are served over the counter in huge stoneware mugs. Nick's request for water doesn't even raise any eyebrows. A few minutes tick by, and during that time, everyone in the tavern seems to be trying very hard to mind their own business, although some of the younger men are obviously curious about these exotic strangers in their midst. Parnoth certainly looks uncomfortable. Was he supposed to drink, too? He'd never been one for socializing, so what one was supposed to do in these circumstances left him a little baffled, and he'd turn himself inside out before he followed Valdor's example.
The atmosphere is bordering on unbearable when a female human appears from a shadowy doorway at the left hand side of the bar. Ten, maybe fifteen years ago, she would have been quite stunning, but her looks have taken on a hard edge, and there are a few wrinkles here and there. Still, she looked well enough, with a long fall of dark hair, sharp blue eyes, and a close-fitting, burgundy gown.
She approaches the party. "Well, well. So it is true," she purrs. "Gentlemen, lady. If you'll follow me, please. We can talk through here." She points to the aforementioned shadowy doorway. "I'm Mica, by the way."
Corialote and Amarth Friday March 17th, 2006 2:58:44 AM
Cori watches the approach of the woman with a keen eye. Shaking her head she sighs. She will never have to worry about that for a good many years. Not that she was too worried about growing old...here line of work and new friends would see to that or so she figured.
She just gives the woman a nod as she points them to a quieter place to have a little chat. She is still on the lookout for trouble as she is not sure how far away the enemy really is.

Valdor Friday March 17th, 2006 2:57:39 PM
Seeing Parnoth's discomfort, Valdor stifles a smile and asks the bartender,"Could you get a glass of your finest wine for my companion. He is a nobleman of great import in the Emerald Kingdom and is unused to bars. We wouldn't want the great Parnoth the Green Dragon to hear that I was discourteous to one of his highest, if not the highest of his nobleman. And, though I know you already take great pains to do so, please make sure the glass is impeccably cleaned."
He tosses a small handful of gold coins on the bar for the trouble of the bartender.
When the lady arrives, he takes quick inventory of her walk. He isn't concerned with her looks, but instead, watches her stance, notes which arm or leg she favors, and such. He still isn't sure that this is above board, and watches the crowd for any eyes lingering too long on their discussion.
Ve Mundr Friday March 17th, 2006 3:58:28 PM

(OOC: are they working together and near each other, one on either side of the street? weight, height, race, gender info.)

Mordrid Sunday March 19th, 2006 7:26:33 PM
Mordrid saddles up to the bar with the rest. When Nick receives his requested beverage, the ranger pushes it aside. "If you're truly thirsty, I have water. But, don't drink that."
Raising his mug to Ve's, "Cheer's;" The ranger obviously pleased that a man of the order was not too holy to share a drink with his comrads.
Getting settled, he looks into the mirror on the opposite side of the bar; scanning the room behind him. "Too easy."
When Mica comes out, Mordrid ponders if he has ever seen her before. She was near his age.
Nick Sunday March 19th, 2006 11:55:55 PM
Nick gives a patient sigh. Trust Mordrid to put him on the spot. Or was it naturally tainted? Could be, he supposed. "Perhaps some wine then," he asks. He's glad when the lady appears. It's been a while since he's sat down in a bar and had a drink, just 'for-having-a-drink' sake. In fact the last time was his father's funeral, and just the scent of alcohol is bringing back memories he really doesn't want to re-live right now. It's probably what's making him feel a bit more uptight than usual.
DM Jan Monday March 20th, 2006 12:38:17 AM
The bartender raises an eyebrow at the gold put forth on the counter, and gives 'the nobleman' the onceover with eyes bordering on cynicism. But then he shrugs, moves to the extreme left of the bar, reaches down, and pulls out a dusty bottle, which he dusts off reverently, uncorks, and pours. "Plains of Yrth's finest. We don't get a lot of it," he explains. Parnoth, thrown for a bit of a loop and wondering what that blasted half elf is up to, takes the glass, hesitates, then downs half the contents. He raises an eyebrow. "Fire and woodsmoke," he murmurs. "Not bad."
Mordrid catches various patrons glancing his way through the mirror every now and then. If he makes eye contact, they quickly look away. So far it seems to be nothing other than curiosity.
The woman leads the way through the shadowy doorway, down a short corridor that takes a right, then past a heavy wooden door into a smallish room. The room is almost filled completely by a large table and 10 high backed chairs. There's a fireplace (and a warm fire) against one one wall, and at one end of the table are stacks of papers, a quill pen, and a bottle of ink. No windows. Valdor can see the lady carries herself like a dancer, with an erect posture that seems to glide smoothly along. Mordrid doesn't recognise her, but the accent isn't completely local. Perhaps there's a hint of the Big Float in the mix, somewhere.
So far, no trouble. There is no sign of Edwin.
Mica casts a hand toward the papers on the table. "My apologies. I'm a business woman, and I'm a little behind with my work. One of my girls was murdered in the night." She pushes the papers aside. "Please, take a seat." She looks at Ve, Nick, Cori, Mordrid, Valdor and Parnoth. "Are you.... the Gold Dragons? Have I got that right?"
Outside, unfortunately the men below don't come close enough for any halfling entanglements. They're good. Not obvious at all, constantly switching distances and sides of the street. However, as the other Dragons enter the 'Tail of the Lizard', Dahlia sees the two men head further onward - one enters 'The Skinners Arms' on the opposite side of this street, and another heads over to a similar establishment a little further down the street that has a sign hanging lopsided over the doorway. the sign says 'T n rs Delight'.
Valdor Monday March 20th, 2006 10:29:41 AM
Valdor nods slowly to Mica and says,"We are. We have joined with the Storm Dragons and have a new name now, but that is not important. We have urgent business here and are looking for a little help. The person who does this will earn a reward, along with the gratitude of ourselves and the Emerald Kingdom."
He turns to Cori, then glances at Parnoth and asks,"Can either of you ensure we are shielded from scrying or ears listening from outside this room?"
Dahlia Monday March 20th, 2006 4:56:25 PM
Staying on watch and out of sight, Dahlia passes her information on the Valdor and the others via her earring.
"Valdor, you were followed by two separate entities. I was not able to neutralize them. One entered the Skinners Arms and the other went into someplace where the sign is messed up but says this, T n rs Delight.
I am above the Tail of the Lizard and on look out. Let me know if I am needed."

Nick frowns, hearing Dahlia's report. "Dahlia," he says quietly into the earpiece. "If one of those places is the 'Tanners Delight'. That was mentioned, on a note, remember? be careful." He doesn't want to say more until the scrying problem is settled.
DM Jan Tuesday March 21st, 2006 12:56:25 AM
His Excellence, the sole ruler of the Emerald Kingdom, gives Cori a look of disdain, then makes a sharp hissing sound that soon goes beyond the range of normal hearing.
Meanwhile, the woman, Mica, stiffens. "Funny you should mention the Emerald Kingdom." She reaches over to her pile of papers, laying one of them out in front of her. The paper looks to contain notes, written in a spidery hand. She looks to be reading from it for a few moments, and then she says - "From what some of my other girls tell me, the dead girl had spent some time with a man who'd just come from there. If you're after a murderer, may I say that you've arrived a little later than I'd have liked."
Suddenly, the light in the room appears to diminish, and the walls take on a dull pallor. In fact the walls look alive, with swirling tiny sparks swaying amongst the gloom. "Hmph," says Parnoth. "Didn't expect that." He steps over to the nearest wall and prods it with a finger.
"You want to be careful, if you're using magic," adds Mica. "The local wizards are trying to set up a city-wide ban, with what's been happening lately. Anyway - what do you wish to know? I'll tell you what I can. Warrd knows we could do with the money. Or maybe we can trade information, if our two plights are connected."
Outside, for a moment, all seems quiet to Dahlia. But no, wait. Two men, one of whom is the one who she saw entering, leave the T nn r's Delight, pass her below on the street, and head east. They're walking at a fair clip.
Mordrid Tuesday March 21st, 2006 11:42:55 AM
Leaning over the table with the rest, "I am sorry that one of your girls was killed. What kind of operation are you running here?? And why have the local wizards banned magic?"

Cori catches the look from Parnoth and glares back at him. "You got a problem there." She had come loaded for combat and not for espionage. "Next time I will bring only those types of spells and then watch your tail get toasted." She turns and moves off to the corner of the room, mumbling as she moves. Her fantasies right now are of Parnoth getting his tail caught on fire and not being able to put it out.
Maybe it was the situation or maybe it was just Parnoth but she was in a bad mood and things could get ugly...no it is most definitely Parnoth...she really does dislike the arrogant twit.

Valdor nods understandingly to Mordrid. He doesn't respond as his companions ask the right questions. He gently places a hand on Cori's shoulder and whispers,"We are on the same side for the time being. I understand how irritating he can be, but he IS a noble and they think differently than us. Also, he tends to try to act meaner than he is. Let it go dear, we all need each other right now."
He hears Dahlia's report and responds,"Follow for a bit, but not too far away from here. We need to have a warning if there ends up being a group of them coming. Stay safe and take no unnecessary risks."

DM Jan Wednesday March 22nd, 2006 1:37:38 AM
Mica looks at Mordrid, taking in his accent and dress. He was not altogether foreign like the others were, or so it appeared. It has her on the defensive, and she raises her chin a little as she answers. Don't judge me, the gesture seems to say. "I run an escort service. The best in town. And now I'm without one of my best girls. Word on the street is that her 'customer' was a loudmouth. Just back from some place. Was spending gold like it was going out of fashion. Telling everyone he'd killed a dragon. No one believed him. But it seems like some thought he was talking out of turn, and he was silenced. Apparently, my girl was in the right place at the wrong time." She hesitates and ruffles the papers in front of her. "But - I don't know. It all looks so neat. Everything on a plate. And the dragon story is preposterous. You learn not to believe everything you hear in this City. So, who knows?"
"As for the magic. They say it's got so unpredictable that it's too dangerous. Local wizards have been bellyaching about it for months now." She looks toward Ve. "Well, we had one young wizard set fire to himself, out in the street just the other day. Thought he was a God, by all accounts. Ended up burnt to a crisp, and no one dared to heal him because they were worried about what might happen if anyone tried it. Again, just street-talk, but they say something gets into your head. Something bad."
Mica shrugs at Nick's question. "I don't know. Magic is magic. Isn't it?"
Completely and utterly oblivious to Cori's disquiet, His Excellence ignores her completely and turns his attention to the woman's story. "Ha!" he snorts, as the dragon killing crops up. Now it's his turn to be annoyed.
Outside, the two men start to disappear down a wide street. If Dahlia wishes to follow, she's going to have to be pretty nimble in order to keep up. Across the rooftops and looking east, it appears that, in the middle distance, there is a break in the packed-in vista of buildings, as though there's a park, maybe. Slates and tiles seem to give way to green.
Valdor Wednesday March 22nd, 2006 4:10:30 PM
Valdor glances around and replies,"Look, we know who the man who killed your girl works for. You may not want to hear his name, but he was one of Korrig's men. We are here to kill him and retrieve some things from him. We need to find him quickly. Word will be spreading, I'm sure."

Ve is more than a little intriuged by what was happening in Osto to those of arcane and divine powers and he was also very concerned. His personal abilities in a high end conflict were in question. He was still a highly skilled warrior, but for almost 20 years he had blended his divine call with his hammer when necessary. If thier foes were less dependant, this could be very dangerous indeed. Ve shifts so that he can take Cori's reaction into hiw view. If this disturbed him, it must surely shake her to the core.
In an effort to allieve that particular situation Ve states matter of factly, "Lesser masters no doubt." Other than that he keeps quiet. No point in pursuing the litany of questions in his mind with this woman. All she knew was street talk and that would lead no where fo Ve. It was not why they were here anyway.

Cori cannot help it...she just bursts out laughing. "So I maybe limited in scope in this little foray." She shakes her head and continues to lightly laugh at the whole idiotic thing.
Well at least she did study with the bow for a few years and she is not half bad with it. Her right hand seeks out the handle of the rapier that is under her cloak and shakes her head some more. "God I hate close up work."
With a little more though she nods to Valdor and then gives a wry smile. "You might not want to be too close if I do cast a spell...crispy is not the way to end or live life." The smile slowly spreads as she tries her hardest not to burst out laughing again. Inside though she is cringing at the lack of assistance she is going to be...she is mostly about magic...well almost all about magic anyways.

DM Jan Thursday March 23rd, 2006 1:01:15 AM
"Oh, I agree that Korrig's thugs were behind it," Mica says. "The murders even took place over at the Tanners Delight. One of his prime recruiting grounds. However, what I'm saying, is that I found out about it, and who did it, a little too quickly, if you get my meaning. Normally things like this are kept hushed up for days, weeks even. It's so high profile, that it sets off warning bells, but a warning for what, I do not know." She leans back into her chair and raises her hands in a helpless gesture. "Funny how all this happens and then you turn up. We don't see the likes of South Easterners very often, let me tell you. "Any way, if you're here to stop them, I'll support you any way I can. I don't know exactly where Korrig is - but there's always a bunch of his cohorts over at the Tanners. If you're going there. Watch your step. It can get a little rough."
outside, on the roof, and heading east, Dahlia sees the two men enter a section of the City that seems to be composed of derelict buildings. There are no roof tops here, only crumbling buildings open to nature and the elements, and nature - courtesy of trees, shrubs and climbing ivy - is doing it's best to take over.

DM Jan Friday March 24th, 2006 12:28:56 AM
Inside -
"As far as I can tell, it's a local, city-wide problem," answers Mica, "coming from the area called the M -"
And right at that moment, just for one fleeting instant, Cori, Ve and Nick feel a sharp, invisible pull of energy, like they are spiders on a great web, feeling the frantic, desparate tug as a fly becomes entangled. Valdor's armour and weapons suddenly feel warm to the touch, and Mordrid's sword shifts in it's scabbard.
Outside -
As Dahlia takes to the air and swoops toward the area the two men had gone, something emerges from there - bright, angry, and gaining velocity at every second. It is both magnificent, and enormous - a fireball that writhes like a small sun. It travels fast, arcing over Dahlia's current location, and then descending toward the street where the other Platinum Dragons are.
Inside -
There is a deafening BOOOOOM, and the room shakes violently as something outside explodes, something maybe across the street. It's incendiary power is enough to make the table in the room jump, and soot to fall down the chimmney and billow out into the room.
Outside the room and beyond, in the street, people start to scream.
Ve Mundr d20+14=30 Friday March 24th, 2006 3:51:37 PM
Ve contimues to listen as Mica lays out what she knows and with another part of his mind, he starts working through conflict scenerios without divine power. Ve's ice blue eyes stay riveted upon the woman his squart jaw set and one mithril mailed glove taps just on the tip of his chin. It looks as if Domi has truly laid out a task before him. One worthy of his metal and as his eyes moved from Cori to his good friend Father Nick he slowly nodded to himself. Unlike the trip deep into north and the war barons there, this was not about Domi's need of a Heirophant but that of a Protector to the Dragons and justice to be seen done. Ve would do...That pull? A powerful spe.. The thought goes unfinished as the table jumps and the room becomes a masked billowing cloud of choking particulate matter from the chimney.
Ve Closes his eyes and mouth and relies more on his keenly trained hearing to pick out where in the room everyone is. He purposefully remains seated with his strong legs snapping out wide to either side to give him not only stability, but the ability to rise instantly and not upset teh table upon doing so. Valdor will be taking control of the situation before i finish this tho...ahh yes
Nick Friday March 24th, 2006 7:32:00 PM
"Dahlia?" Nisk asks via the earpiece and somewhere in amongst a coughing fit. "What's going on out there? Everyone okay?"
A mouth full of soot isn't doing much to quell the nausea felt only moments before, as something had disturbed his senses. He tries to get a grip. If there were injuries then he had to heal them, weird magic or no.
Valdor d20+20=39 Monday March 27th, 2006 12:53:25 AM
Valdor is listening intently when the room veritably explodes. He takes a deep breath and closes his eyes. With all his years of training, he quickly navigates the table to where Mica was just standing...making sure he doesn't trample her in the process. He coughs out,"Out of here, now. We're sitting ducks in here. Dahlia, get back here now!"
He hoists Mica over his shoulder and sprints from the room, heading toward the back of the building, instead of the front, knowing what a riot there is likely to be up there.
Mordrid Monday March 27th, 2006 11:53:23 AM
Upon the explosion, Mordrid's chair fractures beneath him, sending the ranger on a downward path to the floor. His bent knees act like springs, and his feet find the floor beneath him. A hard act, as his mind was a million miles a way at that moment; well actually his mind was at his hip, contemplating the strange gravity of his sword.
His eyes wide and wild, take in the scene as his leader begins to take action. Nodding toward Valdor he gets out the door first, down the back hall, and planting a huge boot in the middle of a door ringed with sunlight; Hopefully rendering it to pieces and putting it face down in the alley. Once freed from the building he whips black hair out of his face, and immediately seizes his bow.
"Dahlia, ar you ok!"
Ve Mundr d20+14=16 Monday March 27th, 2006 5:11:30 PM
Hearing Valdor and Mordrid moving together, Ve takes it upon himself to guide Father Nick and Cori from the building. Cori was right next to him at the table and Nick just across. The Hammer of Domi is ripped from his belt and the Brilliant Energy weapon glows a soft blue in the wafting ash cloud. "Cori, Father Nick to me. We are right behind you Valdor."
Without waiting for either to really respond Ve marks the way to the door out. If Cori had been knocked off her chair he scoops her to her feet with his left hand as he moves.
Dahlia (Sub Jan) Kent's comp has blown up Monday March 27th, 2006 6:39:08 PM
To the other Platinums in the ear piece - "It was a fireball. Looks like it hit a building across the street from you, or thereabouts. There's a ruined area in the centre of town, and that's where the fireball came from. "
She starts heading back toward her fellow Platinums.
DM Jan Monday March 27th, 2006 7:10:23 PM
Amidst the chaos of soot, overturned chairs, shattered glass and folk running this way and that in a panic, the Platinum Dragons, and Parnoth, head for the exit.
The green dragon stands erect amongst the dust and broken furniture, and holds up his 'good' hand, displaying a tiny gap between his thumb and forefinger. "I am this close to torching, gassing and flattening this entire town," he growls, clearly enraged that someone would even have the audacity to coat his clothes in soot. A bystander would perhaps raise an eyebrow, at this well-to-do, middle aged man, spouting wild, outlandish and idle threats, not realizing that the words are coming from a monster of immense power with a temper to match. The 'monster' brings up the rear of the exodus, right behind Ve as the Protector of Domi helps everyone else out.
Mica, thrown over Valdor's shoulder, is coughing violently.
Bang! Mordrid's boot connects with a rear door and it flies outward, enabling the Dragons to enter the back street. The air is full of the smell of burning. The street itself, a fairly wide back alley, is soft underfoot with mud and horse manure, and the Dragons find themselves sharing space with a frightened clutch of human kitchen staff who've just left the Inn through another rear door. In a nearby stable, horses are going berserk.
Screams can be heard, coming from the front of the building, and the terror and destruction factor is cranked up an extra notch as someone emerges from a side street, on fire and shrieking, only to fall a short distance away from the group, flames licking hungrily at what's left of the body.
In the air outside, Dahlia can see that the fireball, after it's initial destructive blow, has split into what look like firey snakes. The snakes are slithering and torching everything they come across. As she gets a little closer, it appears that a building - the very building the two rogues had left earlier, and just down the street from where her fellow adventurers are now standing - is now completely and utterly destroyed.
Valdor Tuesday March 28th, 2006 10:34:51 AM
Valdor sets Mica down and booms out,"Move toward the outskirts of town. Do not panic. Stay clear of mobs and those horses. Something bad is happening and you want to be somewhere else."
He then addresses the group and says,"Dragons, let's head towards the cause. Any protective wards would be nice. Mica, you stay here with your people and help organize them. What was that name you were going to say?"
He activates his ring of fire resistance, waits for Mica to answer, then starts to head off at a fast pace. A thought tugs at his mind and he asks quietly,"Why is this danged armor so warm?"
Ve Mundr Tuesday March 28th, 2006 4:39:56 PM

Cori nods thanks to Ve as she stumbles into the open air and sucks in something other than soot. "Did you feel that pull right before the explosion?" She concentrates on that feeling for a few minutes and then shakes her head. They had other things to do right now and Valdor was calling for order.
As she falls into step behind Valdor she runs through her spells and wonders what would be not too risky to use. "I have some nice defensive spells but I am a little leary of using them...not sure what effect they would have." Dahlia (Sub Jan) Kent still blown up Wednesday March 29th, 2006 1:12:48 AM
"Head east," says Dahlia through the earpiece. "There's an overgrown and ruined section of town. I'll join you there."
DM Jan Wednesday March 29th, 2006 2:00:41 AM
"What?" Mica asks, looking stupidly at Valdor for a second. "Oh, the Maze - it's that way." She points east then shakes her head this way and that, trying to get herself together.
Nick finds a very dead person on the ground, still combustible and burning merrily.
The kitchen staff don't need telling twice and dash off in the opposite direction to where the Dragons are going.
As the group begins to move out, they're passed by two citizens running at full tilt, trying to escape from what looks like a wiggling streak of flame. The flame is behaving oddly. It's the aftermath of the fireball, split asunder into slivers, it's energy still alive, chaotic and beyond control, despite all known knowledge to the contrary.
However, some say that most spells are tethered to their creators. There is a connection, a pathway of control, like an invisible leash, tying the caster to the spell; for how else does such power obey the one who weilds it? Divine gift, or sheer force of will, the ties are there.
As for these splinters of flame - they careen hither and thither, like balloons on the breeze, or dogs escaped from their kennels, their tethers and leashes trailing behind, inviting capture. If one had the training, the vision that only years of spell casting brings, one could almost reach out...
Ahead is a wide street,a demolished tavern to the left, belching smoke, and ahead in the distance, trees and misshaped terrain.
Valdor(Ring Fire Resistance-greater, Dust of Disappearance) Wednesday March 29th, 2006 10:36:43 AM

DM Jan Thursday March 30th, 2006 1:54:23 AM
Parnoth stays with the party as they start to move east. He carries a smile on his face, apparently amused at the antics of the sundered fireball. His eyes follow the streams of fire as they race between buildings, harrying various screaming citizens. Funnily enough though, he no longer appears to have the urge to get anywhere before Valdor does.
The dust does it's work with the usual efficiency and the Dragonstone winks out of sight. Click. Like a door being opened, Valdor can suddenly hear voices. ... dragon right there... stupid lazy sword... we can kill... kill... what we do... sword won't do it... it sounds like a gaggle of petulant children talking in his head, emitting waves of jealousy, and furthermore, something feels to be pulling at his chest.
Ve's carpet, oblivious to the local voodoo, operates smoothly and apparently without incident.
Mordrid's protection from fire spell settles about him, as physically comfortable as his wolf cloak, but it arrives with an enhanced perception and an unsettling and creepy feeling. As he travels, an occasional glimpse down a side street triggers a memory - faint and jagged, trodden down by 35 years of neglect. Across the street is another, and as soon as his mind reaches to recall it, the memory starts to crumble to dust. What remains is nothing to give cheer to the ranger. Quite the reverse. Resentment, bitterness and fear. From within himself? From the ground he walks on? Or from something else? Questions that, given time, and without resolution, could drive a man mad.
As the Dragons head toward the'maze', the dust, fire and panic falls behind them. It's replaced by an empty street, where curtains twitch at windows, and many fearful eyes watch from hiding places. Bad magic and strangers in town. It's not much of a stretch to figure that the two are connected, somehow.
Dahlia winks into existance alongside Mordrid as the party reaches the beginning of what looks like a wild, overgrown garden. In amongst the foliage, a tumble of dry wall, and ruined timbers break up the greenery.
A heavy cocktail of power and dread seeps through Cori's skin at the mere sight of this place.
"About 50 yards in, alongside what looks like a small open amphitheatre. There's a patch of dark. That's where the fireball came from, and where the two men went. I might have seen steps going down but I'm not sure," says the dark-skinned halfling.
The tiny reliquary in Nick's hand starts to gather heat.

Valdor's head whips about, looking for signs of the voices. He stops walking and looks all around. If he was visible, it would actually look comical...looking down at his feet, only to whip his head over his shoulder, then to hold his hands up in front of his face, then down to the daggers strapped on his chest.
After a few seconds, he realizes it's a bunch of nonsense, and that he's falling behind. He jogs to catch up and says quietly into his earring with a chuckle,"My magic items are quarreling amongst themselves. Mordrid, now I se why you chose to leave this strange place."

As for the rest of us, let's hang in there, keep things going. I'll put out more enquiries on Monday.))
This ruined, overgrown part of the city stands before the group. It seems quiet, peaceful. There are no citizens here. No dogs, no cats, no lizards, no birds. Odd. Especially as this area seems to be right in the middle of town. Some pathways are evident that head into the interior, mostly cobbled walkways, although the plants are taking over here, too, pushing through cracks and growing laterally over the stones. there are no high buildings here, either. Everything appears to be one storey or less.
Let me know who picks up Shield of Law
Mordrid (Fire Resistance) Friday March 31st, 2006 10:41:53 AM
Mordrid's emotions wash about his soul, further tormenting the hero.
In response to Valdor, "Yah Valdor, and I'll be happy to leave again. As soon as possible."
"Now, let's get this over with. I'm going to scout ahead. Stay close behind."
Mordrid blends into the shadows along the exterior and inches his way forward, to get a better view of the theater.

Valdor replies to Nick,"I'm not scared of some spell effects. It's a little weird feeling, but not unmanageable...so far. I think we just walk right in. But we need to move quickly. Dahlia and Mordrid should check for trip wires and traps as we go...unless one of you spell casters has a find traps spell handy."
Corialote and Amarth [shield of law] Friday March 31st, 2006 11:13:14 AM
The closer they get to this place the more Cori feels the pull of power. Oh it is not dark power or even good power as that comes mostly from how one uses it. Still it is seductive to even her with all her training. She cannot help but flare her nostrils at the scent and her eyes take on a hard edge, as fingers twitch involuntarily. "I can almost reach out and touch it." She is not even aware that she has spoken out loud as the power cloaks her in its embrace. She breathes deeply and for a second closes her eyes to feel it with her whole senses.
Nick's spell is like the further imbrace of an old lover in all this other power. She takes it and wraps herself in it for not only the protection that it will provide but the shear pleasure that comes from it. Amarth taps her on the head with his beak and she smiles, nodding her head. "Mistress we have a job to do." The poor bird is getting just as much from this as she is through their link, but he is wiser than she is and just a little bit afraid.
Feeling the urge to use her magic at least a little she slows her pace a little. "Anyone want a stoneskin for added protection?" Her eyes flash as she hopes that someone will take her up on her offer...she must feel more.

DM Jan Monday April 3rd, 2006 1:46:11 AM
The group advance into the section of the city called 'The Maze'.
There is more than one siren song, here. There is the obvious mental 'pull' of power and promises, made to anyone who's mind is able to envision the lore of the spellcrafter. The power feels real enough, and the promises are extremely seductive. However, these ruins seem to tell a tale, too. The masons had been fine craftsmen, and the knocked down walls and precise cobbles littered with vines and weeds told both Mordrid and Dahlia as they explored ahead, that there had been something very fine standing here, in the midst of a tough, cold swamp town struggling to survive. These stones held the secret of a tragedy.
No traps. However - broken stalks and tendrils, and the occasional muddy footprint offer up a trail. A recent one. It highlights a path of least resistance through the tangle, and leads to a large sunken garden gone to seed. there are large, curved steps here, like this was a small theatre, and at the far side of it - a stairwell, leading to blackness.
The stairs suggest that this place has another level.
Those taking Nick Valentine's spell feels the usual tickling aura for a second, and then a sense of wellbeing and protection. Nick's own reaction is more complicated. For although he feels the benefit of the spell also, it comes along with a slight fatigue and a dryness of skin. The skin around his eyes feels especially taut.
Ve's vantage point reveals no movement other than that of the Platinums. Further use of spells strengthens the message from an unknown source. Power. And you wouldn't even need a God.
Parnoth sets off and then stops for a moment. "Well fancy that," he says, sounding amused. "Something here wants me to kill you. All of you. But not yet." He shakes his head, as if annoyed by children playing too noisily or somesuch, and carries on, following the rest of the group.
Cori's bird Amarth suddenly feels a sense of danger. Unknown, unseen, but the feathered creature does NOT want to be here.
Dahlia's barkskin potion feels..... just like the potion should.

Power rolls across Ve's mind and body. A feeling of invicibility but even more than that, one of infallability. The power lines begin to take shape in his mind. Parnoth's statement actually breaks the hold forming on the cleric of Domi as he turns to look at Parnoth also reaching out with his mind. With but a thought, he reached out and the the evil taint was washed from the land.
Then the urge is subdued by his will and Ve wrentches his eyes from Parnoth and back to the landscape over which he stands. Blessed are the tested, for in the testing are they granted power and perseverance Ve looks about the area of the Maze [spot 25 Listen 15]

He starts to head down the path when he hears Parnoth and replies,"Only a madman would act on voices he hears in his head, eh big P?"
He doesn't wait for a response and heads on in, but doesn't let Parnoth too far behind him.

Mordrid (Fire resistance) Monday April 3rd, 2006 11:45:04 PM
Peeking around the corner thru the brush, Mordrid goes straight, like a hunting dog; having heard Parnoth's statement, he turns.
With a few paced strides he heads toward Parnoth, bow brought around to face forward.
Pulling an arrow he stops five feet shy of Parnoth, with bow drawn straight at the dragon's neck.
"You have NO idea what I could do to you," the ranger spits between clenched teeth.
"Let's get this over with. I'm not taking you in their with my companions. Now that I know what traces the corners of your mind. You have a big mouth. You know that?"
Valdor catches the ranger's eyes. It is serious. The heat is about to go down. This dragon is about to learn what an epic adventurer can do when his sworn enemy is a dragon.
"Ve... Nick... any of you guys have an oath binding spell?"
(Prepared action, full attack x +4 arrows of wounding, 6 x attack +10 favored enemy + BAne of enemies. I think Parnoth would have to know this.)
Valdor Tuesday April 4th, 2006 12:27:03 AM
Valdor, who can see Mordrid just fine whispers,"Easy Mordrid, I think he was referring to the voices all the magic users are hearing. It's making promises and such. He may not like us, but he wouldn't be so foolish as to say that aloud. A lot of things he maybe, most of which I detest, but stupid is not one of them."
Nick (Shield of Law) Tuesday April 4th, 2006 12:49:31 AM
Nick picks his way over the vine-laden cobbles, watching his footing as well as his surroundings. He's beginning to feel uneasy, and that feeling is compounded when a strange sensation overtakes him for a moment or two. He stops, and looks down at his hands, then raises one of them to touch his face. Weird. Like he'd been stood in the sun too long. Then he coughs, shakes his head, and carries on. Right until he sees Parnoth and Mordrid in front of him. By Alemi, what had he missed during his own moment of what posed as madness in these parts?
He glances uneasily at the others, then shakes his head at Mordrid. No oathbinding spell, unfortunately.
DM Jan Tuesday April 4th, 2006 1:51:46 AM
Parnoth glares at Ve's back. What was he looking at? That was the trouble when you took humanoid form. The lesser creatures thought you were just one of them. Just as weak, and subject to intimidation, and impertinant stares, and assumptions that he was being led by those voices just as they were. How had he stooped to this? How? He finds his real hand clenched involuntarily into a fist. His treasure, of course. His beloved treasure. Just thinking about it takes the edge off that glare. And he turns. Right into the point of Mordrid's arrow.
Time slows, and all Parnoth's senses narrow toward that point, and his eyes ignite with green flame. A double punch of utter dread and complete outrage churn through the monster. Damnable, damnable Mordrid. Was this stupid human completely and utterly insane? Was he going to do it? Of course he was. Like he was born for it, the miserable mongrel. Can't back down. Can't. Have to get in first. Poison would take too long. Fry his rotten little hide and grind the ashes with his boot. Or just bite his head off. Big mouth. Oh yeah - he'd show him exactly how big. But could he get in first? That was debatable. Pox-ridden excuse for a man was on the edge of letting go of that bow string. This was going to hurt. So. Plan B - fry him anyway, but what in the living Wold was a definitely preferable Plan A going to be?
But then he picks up Valdor's whisper. Of course. Valdor held this maniac's leash. Tightly, one hoped.
Nick, Cori and Valdor will notice that Parnoth's flesh hand is rapidly becoming scaly and his eyes are burning brilliant green. The dragon otherwise hasn't said anything or moved a muscle.
There is a distinct probability that Ve and Dahlia are unaware of this situation. Ve catches sight of Dahlia momentarily before she disappears down the steps. The Protector catches the smell of charred flesh coming from the stairwell. It mixes uneasily with his other senses as he descends.
A little ahead of him, Dahlia sees a wide, gloomy tunnel that appears to split three ways after a distance of 40 ft. Weak light is coming from above via cracks in the tunnel ceiling. The burned flesh smell is stronger here, and she can see two vague lumps on the tunnel floor, maybe 30ft in.
Valdor d20+28=43 Tuesday April 4th, 2006 10:44:17 AM
From just behind him, Parnoth hears another whisper,"I wouldn't do that if I were you. We can work this out. He thought you were being controlled by those voices. At first, I thought the same thing from what you said. Calm yourself before something bad happens to us all. We don't need this right now. Even if you could beat us, Korrig and his people would be here to finish you before our fight was over.
My daughter is somewhere around here and I'm going to find her. Your treasure is there as well. Do you want it, or do you want to fight and probably die to either us or Korrig? Let's quit this madness and get moving."
Parnoth is astute enough to know that Valdor can strike him at any time, but obviously doesn't want to.
Ve Mundr Tuesday April 4th, 2006 4:01:05 PM
Ve keeps an eye on and pace with Dahlia as she desends the stairs. "There are the two you saw coming this way I'd wager." Mordrid's voice just outside catches his attention, another reason Parnoth should not have come. They were all very powerful, but none were invicible. Without leaving Dahlia the tall northman calls back outside, "No I do not Modrid!" Knowing the rest of the dragons can be updated quietly by the rogue in front of him, he does not bother with tunnel descriptions or the mention of the bodies. Instead he moves closer to the two dead men.
Likely they would be engaging whoever killed these two. Ve secures his full mithril helm and his well worn leather clad left hand grips the shield strap with an audible creak. Setting his mind against the inevitable, Ve casts Freedom of Movement.

Corialote and Amarth [shield of law] Tuesday April 4th, 2006 8:30:31 PM
Cori stops in her tracks as she watches the play of events before her. Her own hand is clenching and unclenching as she brings several spells to mind. There is the whispering again in her head and the pulse of power that is threatening to overwhelm her.
Almost unbidden her hand starts to rise and a long slender finger points out straight. She can feel the need to release a single fireball in the middle of the group. She no longer sees friends and companions but those that stand in her way of ultimate power. "Burn." She starts to pull the power to her, eyes burning with a deep need.
Then she feels a sharp rap on the side of her face that leaves a warm trail running down her cheek. Her hand that had been about to cast a spell flies to her face and touches blood. Her eyes flame as she takes in the bird on her shoulder.
"Calm Mistress...the whispers are there to tempt you, to weaken you...please do not listen to them." He pleads with his Mistress to not give in as he holds his own ground, even with a hand heading for his neck.
Then the voices die away to leave laughter in thier wake and she snaps out of it. Her hand only inches from Amarth and intent on killing him. "What..." It sinks in as she reaches up to wipe tears from her eyes. "I will not give in...thank you Amarth...you are truly my best friend." She shakes her head and strokes the birds feathers lovingly. What had she almost done in that one instand of weakness. The sense of need for power that the voices invoke are suddenly burned away with anger...pure hatred for something that would try to control her.

Mordrid Wednesday April 5th, 2006 12:07:56 AM
Valdor's words seem to have some sway on the situation at hand. The ranger lower's his bow for effect, knowing a quick draw is all it would take.
Spitting on the ground, "Heh. Parnoth, you mound of tripe, you'd better kill me first if it comes to that."
Mordrid points to his own eye, and then to Parnoth's, "I'll be keeping an eye on you." Then he casually moves to the back of the group.
Nick Wednesday April 5th, 2006 12:44:08 AM
Nick gives a slight start as Mordrid spits on the ground. Normally, he'd be tempted to say something, or maybe Valdor had already said it. But by Alemi, Mordrid was strung pretty tight. If Parnoth had retaliated... Of course it wasn't over yet. Nick finds himself quite shocked, with adrenalin punching a hole in his chest, courtesy of his heart, beating strong and fast.
They were taking a risk with Parnoth. In more ways than one, and he was loathe to fault Mordrid when the dragon could well have his own agenda - one that didn't bode well for the rest of them. Perhaps some kind of balance had been maintained. Yes, he'd comfort himself with that. Seeing Cori's bird pecking away at her, he steps over quietly and says to her - "Let's go and see what happened to Dahlia. Are you all right?"
DM Jan Wednesday April 5th, 2006 1:56:41 AM
There is, of course, face to save, and it manifests itself as a cold, triumphant stare as Mordrid backs off. Inside however, fear and loathing are taking some quelling. Parnoth's hand remains scaly for some time, and even he doesn't know whether that is his defense mechanism, still on full alert, or the reluctance to complete the humanoid change - to become, in shape at least - like that wilful, loathsome, hated-beyond-measure, human ranger. He remains silent but his head and eyes follow the man. You will rue the day, Mordrid.
RUE
THE
DAY
Should he have fried the scum, anyway, regardless of the consequences? He knew some dragons who would have, and who would have upbraided him for not doing so. However, he hadn't been ruler of the Emerald Kingdom for this long by being so rash. He prided himself on treading carefully. Especially as the Wold these days seemed awash with 'two-bit dragon slayers' and overblown adventurers way above their station. Yes. That seemed excuse enough. As for the fear part - eh, he'd had a bad stomach all day. That was what that was. He shakes his head and snorts - a strange gesture for a human. His hand becomes flesh, and as he steps forward, he leaves behind a slight, bitter scent, a mere trace of something that smells like hydrogen chloride.
Straight ahead of the main party - wide, curved steps lead down to what looks like a small stage, and at one side, is the stairwell that Dahlia and Ve have entered. While Valdor and Nick probably feel a sense of profound relief, Cori feels as though she has just fought quite a personal battle. The feeling brings with it a sense of satisfaction, but she feels drained because of it.
Down in the tunnel -
It is a grisly sight that meets Dahlia and Ve as they approach the 'lumps' in the tunnel. It is indeed the two men Dahlia had seen earlier, if scraps of a striped waistcoat are anything to go off. There isn't much else apart from blackened flesh clinging to blacker bones. There is a blast direction, as though some incendiary power came at them from further down the tunnel. Charring is visible against one wall, like a great flame had shot forth from somewhere ahead and blasted anything in it's path.

The power those beings have is enormous. He has much pride himself and knows he's a match for just about anything. But, there's always a bigger fish, as they say, and even a dragon can be taken down easily enough by a powerful person or group. Parnoth's statuesque form comes into his mind and he grins for a moment, then realizes he's drifting a bit and focuses again on his task.

"Just be glad to get out of here...the call of power is not something that I am use to." Her eyes darken for a few minutes as her mind wanders over past fights with her own mother over power. Oh her mother still held to many of the old ways, though she would not admit it in the open.
She pulls up and slows a little as she spots Ve. Looking to Nick she cannot wonder what he is feeling or if he is facing the same things that she feels. With a shrug she is not aware of her spoken thoughts as she scans the area. "Must be a wizard thing." Through the blood that is pumping in her ears she is not able to hear much beyond her own breathing and Nick next to her...still her eyes are as sharp as ever.

Nick (Shield of Law) Wednesday April 5th, 2006 11:25:41 PM
"I'll second that," Nick says to Cori with a smile, on her comment about being glad to get out of here.
As they move forward, he asks Parnoth - "What are your thoughts, Your Excellency, on the abundance of magic power and it's effects, here?"
DM Jan Thursday April 6th, 2006 1:48:09 AM
Dahlia moves carefully along the tunnel, and her expertise leads her to believe that this tunnel is absolutely, unarguably trap free. Ahead lies a junction of three parts - a slightly narrower tunnel leads straight ahead and down some more steps; one leads slightly to the left on the same level; one slopes slightly down to the right.
There is a slight noise (unidentifiable as yet) coming from the centre tunnel, along with a strong feeling that that direction is the way to go.
Ve's darkvision kicks in and he sees trails of ether, like purple ribbons, stretching from the centre tunnel.
As for what cooked the two men - coulda been the fireball; coulda been something else. It was wide, straight on in it's trajectory, which suggests the floor, ceiling or walls were not the deliverer, and perhaps that 'someone' was.
To Cori, up close, Nick Valentine looks like he's aged ten years.
As the remainder of the group descend the stairs, they see Ve not too far away and a slight 'trick-of-the-light shadow which might be Dahlia further ahead. They get to meet the smell of two charred bodies, also.
Parnoth rolls his eyes at Valentine. 'Oh, so someone's finally bothered to ask. Fact - we're being manipulated. Fact - there is power here, the likes of which no one has seen before. Opinion - we're looking at something beyond those liches. They might be behind all this, but I'm wondering if they've bitten off more than they coud chew." Normally he would have finished up with a disparaging remark about the mental weakness of the lower races, but considering that all it had taken to get him here was a loss of pride and a little treasure... instead, he merely adds - "As for that Korrig human, his part in this means everything or nothing at all."
With a shrug, he descends the stairs in a deliberate stride.

Valdor Thursday April 6th, 2006 10:15:19 AM
Valdor whispers into his earring,"I have a feeling there's a red dragon involved. That wouldn't have been a fireball, travelling like that. Or, it's some spell we've never encountered, either of which means we need to be very quiet and fast. Don't need to get caught like those two poor suckers did."
Ve Mundr Thursday April 6th, 2006 4:59:12 PM

Ve says quietly in response to Valdor. He then continues in a hushed voice, "Though either lend fire as a primary wepon. I have another Protection spell against Fire I can bestow. I would suggest someone without Evasion as the primary recipient."
At this point Ve looks a bit uneasy but apparently decides to forge ahead. " I also have a Bracelet of Friends and would like to key 4 of you. I was thinking initially of Modrid, Dahlia Cori and Valdor. Those likely to be seperated or removed by some disatnce in combat or ambush. Valdor I leave this to your decision?"
Ve will place the Protection from Energy Fire on whomever Valdor thinks should get it.

three way fork ahead, slight sound from the middle one heading in that direction. Remember MIDDLE passage.
Corialote and Amarth [shield of law, displacement] Thursday April 6th, 2006 10:53:31 PM
Still burning with anger from the voices earlier she pulls the magic to her for a spell. Her mind is fixed and she does not plan to let it bother her this time around. She brings her free hand in to touch her own chest, with eyes closed. "This should help out some."
Amarth brushes a wing against Cori's face and laughs. "That is it Mistress...so and steady." He feels the spell settle upon himself as well as he shares it through the link.

Valdor(Invisible, Fire Resistance, Shield of Law) Friday April 7th, 2006 1:33:24 AM
Valdor replies,"I'm not sure what that Bracelet does, but I'd rather it be with one of the clerics instead of myself. I have the ability to evade easily enough, but, if you plan to fight up close, you should use that spell on yourself. I am also protected from Fire. Use that on Nick. We need to keep you healers alive and Nick has already had a bad experience with fire once before. Dahlia, while he casts these spells quickly, check for a few feet or so. Invisible now will be fine."
He reaches over his shoulder and grasps his sword hilt. He asks it mentally if it feels any kind of dragon around the area...knowing it is specially attuned to reds.
Mordrid (Fire Resistance) Friday April 7th, 2006 2:49:57 AM
Mordrid steps carefully behind the group. Whispering into his earpiece, "Valdor you fool. This is a trap. As god is my witness do not allow to take another step forward."
"There is great power here. Parnoth has used us to get it. He says, 'Korrig is nothing to do with it, but everything to do with it.' That means that Korrig has nothing to do with it, but Korrig was an excuse to lure us here. The whole thing was a set up from the start. Who was at war with the fea king? Who arranged his assassination?"
Ve Mundr Friday April 7th, 2006 10:38:52 AM
Answering Valdor in the same hushed voice, "The Braclet allows me to transport any attuned to it to me across any distance as long as both the called and myself are on the same plane. Also in conflict I do not intend to be on the front line unless I must be."
Though unseen beneath the helm, Ve arches an eyebrow at Modrid tone and words toward Valdor. It is dismissed as long friendship terms. One can say much more to a trusted battle companion and friend than to any other person. Modrid's words did make sence on some level, though it was a grand plot indeed to be so well orchestrated by Parnoth, but the real question is was it a plot beyond his skills. Unfortunately Ve had little experience with the ruler of the Emarld kingdom.
Ve reaches out and catches Father Nick with the Protection from Energy Fire Spell. Looking towards the split, "I can seen an ether trail of magic from the central passage. Likely the remnents of the spell that killed them and then struck the town. I have the Bracelet and a Status spell on Dahlia, she is quite safe." The cleric's right hand grips the Domi Hammer out of reflex again, "And of course thier is her own impressive skills to keep her."

invisible once again, dahlia slows down and does an in depth search of the center passages opening. DC 49 and skill mastery....
Valdor Saturday April 8th, 2006 6:21:24 PM
Valdor, still invisible, grins from ear to ear at Mordrid's comments. Anyone else, he wouldn't take such a comment from, but Mordrid...well, his brother is right, he knows.
He replies quietly,"Well, of course it's a trap. Everything we do seems to be in response to what someone has done to us. It's always a trap. I'm sure it is, but Parnoth wouldn't have given up a third of his treasure and let himself be encased in stone of his own free will. He has an agenda no doubt, but he was a victim in this as well as us. What his role is, I don't know. But, I do know that he is at least mostly on our side for the moment. Besides, you heard Mica. That guy was spending his gold and bragging about killing a dragon, then he got killed for his mouth.
The reason we always come out on top is that we fight like we are already dead. The best way to beat a trap is to spring it yourself on your own terms. And, my daughter is still missing somewhere. Mycroft once said I'd lead us into the planes of Hell and get us all killed. I told him he was wrong. Not about the place, but that we'd go in and extinguish all the flames and make them like it. You watch my back brother. I'll see us safely through. I promise."
He re-focuses on his sword to see if there is a red dragon anywhere near. Waiting for the vibration that tells him so.
Mordrid (Fire Resistance) Saturday April 8th, 2006 9:27:20 PM
"Well I seriously doubt that Parnoth stood around patiently while people encased him in intricate magical patterns. He was in on it; stone not death, one-third of his treasure, a map placed conveniently in a dead man's pocket for me to find."
"As for your back, I have it. And your daughter we will find."
Valdor has some how managed to talk Mordrid down during this trying moment. The ranger was prepared to not budge.
