Angus is disgusted with himself and drops the now useless scroll, just as he is hit by the acid arrow spell. "Just great." Angus exclaims, but only Belkior and Syr are next to him to hear.

Angus Looks to Syr and suggests "Get your partner and help Lang and Ashlan. They are taking a beating."

Angus rolls up his sleeves and attempts to dispel the darkness one last time (dispel roll 23). "This had better do it." as sweat starts to form on the thin sorcerers brow as he concentrates on his spell.

Angus yells at Ashlan "Either help your partner before he is killed or open some windows! Do something useful and now!"

Lang takes the ogres tremendous blow and looks to Ashlan "Any time you want to join the party feel free."

Lang know his weapons are doing much damage to the zombie, but he will take one more round, while reinforcements arrive. Lang gritts his teeth and launches a vicious attack.

At this rate, Lang knows he will die before the zombie and tries to make himself as difficult a target to hit as possible.

A bolt glances from the links of her Mithral armor. She turns, and another hits the ground just behind.

"We don't need to defeat you, Bimbo Brain!" the rogue taunts. "All we need do is sit out here and burn the house to the ground. That makes you dead!"

From her pack she draws a flask of oil. With a short five foot hop, she heaves it into the dark doorway.

"Gonna burn you out! We're gonna clean this place with fire!"

Ashlan moves to help Lang even though he is effected by the doom spell (not meaning he knows the spell name) and grits his teeth as he expects a few blows to come as he moves in, aiding Lang against his enemy, "Sorry for the delay my friend, I been hit by some type of spell or something and it took me a moment."

The halfling cleric hisses as the acid works its way under his armour. He knew that there was at least one arcane caster inside the house, but now it seems that there are two.

Belkior focuses on his deity, ignoring the pain of the acid burning his skin. He summons a Magic Circle Against Evil around himself.
Concentration = 24

"Lang! I'm coming to assist you!"

Belkior then advances into the face of the enemy, finally standing just behind Lang. His Circle should be protecting both Lang and Ashlan, in addition to himself. Anyone else who joins the melee in the doorway will also be protected.

(I have a base movement of 40 feet, but you're right, I won't be able to get past the ogre, so I'll stop at the edge of its reach. Next round, if it doesn't move back, I can 5' step into its reach and attack it without provoking. :) )

Wynn hears the call for help and tries to squeeze into position through the partially blocked doorway [Tumble=25]. Once he has entered the mansion he drives upwards through the gloom from a crouched position and slashes across the Ogre Zombie's hamstrings [Hit AC=28(30 if Flanking), for 8 Hp chance to hit = 44%]. The bard readies himself to avoid the undead's backlash [Dodge zombie - effective AC=22]

Syr nods at Angus, "Sure thing boss!" and more quietly, "I thought we were trying to get this place ready for the kids, I really don't want them living on a pile of ashes..." He sprints for the house and the ogre in the doorway. Unconcerned for his safety, he tries to folllow thhe bard's manuever with a diving roll past the creature (tumble 24).

I posed a question on the rules board concerning the Dispel Magic attempts by Angus. The active spell is Unhallow with Darkness as its spell affect. Unhallow cannot be dispelled as it is an instantaneous spell.

However, the spell effect Darkness has a duration of 1 year so I think it can be dispelled. But since it is a spell effect as opposed to a spell, if a Dispel Magic is successful it will only dispel the darkness in the area covered by the Dispel Magic spell. The areas outside the Dispel Magic will remin under the darkness effect unless they are also dispelled.

End CR #3:

Famina Famina moves out of the stables and moves towards the battle. She ends up just out of reach of the Ogre.

Angus, thinking he will never be able to dispel the darkness in front of him tries once more. He is somewhat shocked himself when the darkness in the doorway is dispelled. He also notices that 1 of the skeletons becomes much clearer to see.

Lang attacks the Ogre once more. This time he does damage the creature, although it is just an un-flesh wound (2 damage).

Xenia tosses an oil flask towards the house. However without the magical aid instilled in the fireball bead, she is not able to loft it past both Lang and the Ogre. It hits the side of the house and breaks, spraying Lang and the Ogre with oil. Neither catch on fire.

Ashlan steps up to the plate and takes a few mighty swings at the Ogre. He scores a hit with his Kukri for 11 damage.

Belkior once again moves closer to the doorway and casts MC against Evil (affecting Belkior, Lang, Famina, Syr and Ashlan).

Wynn moves towards the battle and is able to just squeeze past the Ogre and into the now lit plantation home. He flanks the undead and delivers a vicious blow with his longsword for 8 damage.

The beast is now flanked, assuming Wynn can continue to threaten it.

Syr tries to follow Wynn through the tiny space between the Ogre and the door frame. Unfortunately for him, the Ogre filled that space in after Wynn sneaked by and Syr bounces off the Ogre. The Ogre then bashes him once for good measure (AoO hitting AC 29 for 14 damage; Prayer adjusted).

Start CR #4:

OOC -- Everyone but Angus & Xenia can see this in the now dimly lit interior of the house.

The battle for entrance into the manor home rages on. The Ogre Zombie under the cover of darkness and the defensive position of the doorway pounds the Bugbear Ranger. The Ranger tries to put up a fight, but the combination of the Enfeeblement spell along with the damage reduction may prove to much for him. The Ranger has friends though and many close on the Undead. One is able to get past and into the building. Another is able to dispel the darkness. The lifting of the darkness reveals more Undead, a charred front entranceway and what appears to be a human girl.

The front entranceway has stairs on each side to the second level. It is open between the stairs. Up on the second level looking down on the battle are 2, slightly burned Vampire Spawn (spot 20 to see these look different as they are covered with tattoos). On the main level coming from the left hallway is a Troll Skeleton, also slightly burned. It is holding a human female. She looks absolutely terrified and ready to faint at any moment (spot 20 to see a necklace on her similar to the dead girl's found before). She is babbling incoherently in fear.

Rounding out the Undead are three Wolf Skeletons in the back of the entranceway. Where they are standing actually looks to be a formal dining area.

Combat:
The 2 skeletons in the window fire their crossbows again, targeting Xenia. Two more skeletons lean over the railing from above the doorway and fire upon Wynn.

Xenia hit AC's 10 & 8 after Prayer; no damage.
Wynn hit AC's 14 & 21(9); damage 8.

One Skeleton has 20% concealment (1-20 on the d100).

The Ogre strikes again at Lang with its Great Club. If Lang thought the last blow hurt a lot, this once makes it pale by comparison. Lang wonders if the darkness spell has come back as he slumps to the ground unconscious.

Lang hit AC 28(26); critical damage 37 after Prayer & MC against Evil. You guys really want to kill my character!

Belkior and Angus feel the burning sensation where the missile impacted burn them again. It does however feel like there will not be anymore acid damage.

Belkior damage 6 after Prayer; concentration check DC 15 if you cast a spell.
Angus damage 8 after Prayer; concentration check DC 16 if you cast a spell.

The Shields fighting in the doorway hear the female voice direct the Troll to let go of the girl and attack Wynn. The girl falls to the ground, crying hysterically.

The Troll steps forward 5', flanking Wynn and lashes out at Wynn with its claws and a bite. On claw opens up a major gash across Wynn's neck.

Wynn hit AC's 21, 30(24) & 9; damage 10 + critical damage 23 after Prayer (total 33).

The wolves stay where they are in the back of the building as they cannot easily get by the troll to attack.

The 2 Vampire Spawn on the second level appear to be in conversation. They appear to be discussing Belkior as they point to him and talk. It seems as if they are concerned about the little cleric. One points at him and casts a spell.

Angus pumps his skinny arm in triumph as the darkness inside the building is dispelled, only to feel the acid burn his leg some more.

OOC: Is the darkness dispelled in the entire structure or just the first floor?

Angus sees Lang fall and moves foward 30 feet and sights in on the ogre zombie with two scorching rays.

Angus will take a look around to see if he can spot any more nasties (3, nat. 1), but he acid is taking his concentration.

Lang feels Belkior's protective magic wash over him as he arrives, but to no avail as the great club smashed the big bugbear to the ground. Lang is able to roll over before the blackness takes him.

If Lang is barely concious, he will move 5 feet and slump against the side of the building.

If Lang is at Zero HP he should still be conscious. He is only Disabled. He can move. But anything interpreted as strenuous (Attacking, frx) will automatically put him into negatives.

That means, he could move five feet diagonally out of the melee. That would allow Belkior to move five feet diagonally away as well, placing him out of the range of AoO.

Xenia is waiting for Belkior, BTW.

The halfing cleric casually ignores the feeble spell cast by one of the two vampire spawn.

Belkior steps back five feet as Lang does so. Once there, he concentrates and prays to Alemi for a curing spell. A rush of curing energy floods into Lang's body, making him ready to fight once more.

After doing that, Belkior reaches into his pouch to retrieve a Wand of Cure Moderate Wounds.

"There's lots of them in there! Start lobbing the fireballs!

If Angus and Xenia do throw some fireballs, Belkior hopes that they manage to get the spells inside the house. But he is hoping to shake the confidence of the more intelligent of the undead.

The dark rogue tracks across the grass for a better look at where Wynn got himself to.

"Angus! The window above the doorway! Hit it with a lightening bolt! We'll flood the place with light!"

Xenia rips the last bead loose. She gauges the distance from the guys to the window, and throws.

Wynn grunts in pain as the undead troll slashes him across the back of the neck. The warm sticky sensation of blood is all the evidence he needs to know that he is in a precarious position. He drops to one knee and executes a vicious arcing slash with his longsword, cutting across first the ogre zombie and then the skeletal troll in a desperate hope that he will be able to bring at least one of them down [Whirlwind attack hit AC=26 (28 if flanking) against ogre and 23 against troll for 11 and 7 points of damage respectively].

"Hurry" he yells, "there's some kind of skeletal troll in here and they have a child captive". The bard wonders if these will be his last words when neither the ogre or the troll fall to his sword.

It seems that Lang has moved out of the way, or fallen down. So, Famina moves to occupy where he was and engage the troll. (5' step, so I'm pretty sure that doesn't provoke an attack of opportunity.)
And...it hits. Battle lust! She gives a whoop as her eyes turn expressionless, and suddenly added strength fills her limbs. She feels herself bite her tongue, and blood fill her mouth, and the taste drives her on... Pumping blood, her heart pounding, is all that she hears as she drives her sword straight at the ogre zombies chest.
(Okay, I hit AC 21 on the mark, then AC 22. I think I get a full attack since i only took a 5' step this round. I did 7 + 4+2+1 = 14 damage on the first swing, 2 + 7 = 9 damage on the second. Oh, and it's a long sword/slashing.)

Syr attacks the ogre hitting twice for 3 & 9 damage after damage reduction.

Angus casts Scorching Ray, hitting the Ogre Zombie twice.

OOC - on the map the yellow area is still in darkness.

Lang crawls diagonally 5' ending up behind Ashlan and next to Belkior.

Belkior moves 5' over towards Lang and touches him with his healing wand for +32 HP's.

Is spontaneously casting a cure spell a full round action?

Xenia tosses her last fireball bead at the 2 crossbow wielding skeletons in the second story window. It explodes in a fiery blast (saves 7 & 12). The 2 skeletons disappear from view.

Wynn uses his the amazing feat Whirlwind Attack to strike out at both the Troll and the Ogre. He hits both, doing 11 to the Ogre and 2 to the Troll after DR (yes you are flanking the Ogre still).

Famina moves into the spot vacated by Lang. She goes into a berserk rage and slices the Ogre twice for 14 and 9 damage.

Ashlan swings at the Ogre ombie in front of him with his longsword and kukri. The beast's armor deflects all the force of the blows and none land any damage

Start CR #5:

The Ogre watches Lang as he crawls away. The monster reflexes are too slow to do anything about it. The Ogre swings its large club and smashes Famina as she fights in Lang's old spot.

Famina hit AC 19; damage 13 after Prayer & MC against Evil.

Famina you listed AC 21 vs. evil - is that because of the MC against evil?

The Troll continues its assault against Wynn. It lashes out with its claws and a bite. Wynn gets a reprieve this round as the undead's blows are warded off by his armor and dexterity.

Wynn hit AC's 12, 14 & 17; no damage after Prayer.

The wolves continue to stay in the back of the building.

The discussion between the 2 Vampire Spawn gets a little animated as the one spawn's spell fails to affect Belkior. The same Vampire Spawn casts another spell at Belkior. The other Vampire Spawn points at Wynn and Wynn sees a ray emerge towards him. The ray strikes him in the arm and he feels his strength ebb away.

VS #2 - Magic Missile for 9 damage to Belkior.
VS #1 - Hit touch AC 18 (after -4 firing into combat); Wynn loses 5 points of strength for 4 minutes.

Xenia and Angus see the Vampire come into view in the upstairs window where the skeletons just were. She is careful not to step directly into the sunlight that comes into window (she is 5 or so feet back). She stares intently at Xenia with anger and what looks like jealousy on her face.

"You want fire. I will give you fire for destroying my creations. You will not live to see the night."

A column of flame comes down from the sky and blasts Xenia. All the grass in a 20' circle around Xenia is burned clear to the ground.

Xenia Reflex save DC 21 for 37 or 18 damage.

Angus moves forward happy to see Ashlan in the fight. As Angus moves forward he takes out his CSW potion and tosses it to Lang. "This should help big guy." and sights in on the Ogre and Troll.

Is Ashlan drops the ogre, Angus will attack the Troll if not the ogre to clear the way.

Angus steps into Belkior's magic cirlce and feels the magic protect him as well unleashes a magic missile spell on the ogre (or troll if the ogre is down). Four darts of light streak out and strike the foul undead.

14 damage to ogre or troll

Angus hears Xenia's cry for assisstance and then sees the pillar of fire. "We have to clear the way and close with them girlfriend. Everyone push forward now."

The halfling cleric grunts slightly when the vampire spawn's spell strikes him.

Once the ogre zombie falls, Belkior will push forward past Famina to stand on the stinking, putrid corpse of the undead. His protective magics now encompass Wynn and most of his companions who remain in the doorway.

The Healer of Alemi will then invoke a powerful prayer to his deity, calling down positive energy to strike his undead opponents. He directs the spell so that it is centred above him and slightly to the left, so as to strike all of the undead on the second floor.
Holy Smite = 25 dmg to evil creatures, 12 dmg to neutral. Evil creatures blind for one round. Will save DC 18 to half damage and no blind. Spell penetration = 26

"Burn, foul undead! Feel the holy power of Alemi and run screaming! That's a taste of what you'll feel when we drag you screaming into the sunlight!"

DM - Does the one spell penetration check cover all creatures's with spell resistance? Or do you need to roll separately for each creature?

JohnP - It should be per creature, I think. The SRD isn't too clear on it. How many more spell resistance checks does Belkior need to make? Two?

DM - 2 checks.

DM - Does a burst effect go through floors/walls? If it is centered on the VS on the second level and does not, then it will not get the troll or wolves. If it does, then it will get the troll, wolves, the Vampire, Wynn and the girl. At a minimum it will get the 2 VS and S3 & S4.

The Holy Smite is burst, so it will not turn corners, etc.. If any target has total cover from the target point of the spell, it is not affected.

The target point was almost directly over Belkior, close to the two skeletons in the front window. As described previously, this area is open between the first and second floors. Thus, the two skeletons, the two vampire spawn and Wynn would be targetted. The troll would have only partial cover so it would be affected as well. The girl might have total cover. If there are internal walls on the second floor (Belkior forgot to check or could not see them), then the vampire would be unaffected. The wolf skeletons would have been outside the radius of effect.

Uh oh ...

Xenia looks up, just in time to see the thundering column of flame descending out of the sky. All, just for her. Duck and cover! Duck and cover! Her arms rise to protect her face and hair. Reflexively she pulls into a protective ball.

When the roar of the conflagration lifts, the rogue peers out from within the circle of her arms. All around the ground is black. The grass is vaporized. But Xenia has not a hair out of place.

"Alright, Angus," she replies with a grim smile. "You boys have fun. Me and Vampie Girl, we'll dance."

"You and me, BIMBO, lets finish what we started last night!!!"

Taking a five foot step back, Xenia again draws her mirror. This time, however, instead of brandishing it at the vampire in the shadowy depths of the window, this time ... Xenia catches the reflected sunlight and aims it up into the vampire's face.

"C'mon out Vampie Girl! It's a nice day out here!!!"

As Lang stands he catches the CSW potion, but drops one of his sword in the process. Lang quickly downs the potion and feels more healing energy enter his body. "Belkior and Angus, Thanks a bunch! I am ready to carve up some undead."

Lang call out to Sunshine for help (animal handle 26) "Come here boy, lets get you a bone or two." Sunshine comes running to Lang's side.

The bard watches with satisfaction as the ogre zombie absorbs Angus' magic missiles and turns his attention to the troll. Wynn tumbles past the hideous creature towards the young girl on the floor [Tumble=30] and crouches over her in a defensive posture, ready to parry any attack from the skeletal troll or the undead wolves.
[Combat expertise; -5 to attacks +5 to AC, Hit AC=8 ].

"Stay where you are" he reassures the girl. "We're going to get you out of here."

The elf grins with satisfaction as the Zombie in front of him drops under Angus' missiles. "Thanks, I wasn't doing much to it anyway, lessee if the Troll is any better." With the path now cleared, he moves (n18.3) into the large room and aims a flying kick at the creature (att 15 miss). Seeing the wolves, "Hey Wynn, ever miss those beasties that Tionel would summon forth?"

(The bonus vs. evil is from the magic circle, so yes i do think I got hit. I do have DR of 3 tho :-D)
Famina will do one of two things.
1) If the ogre is still up in front of her, she takes a swing at it, and tries to slice it down! (AC 30 and 11 damage.) If it falls, she rushes forward to just outside of attack reach of the next giant. If it doesn't fall, she takes another wild swing which bounces off its thick shoulder.
2) If the ogre is now down, she rushes forward, engages the skeleton next in line, and takes a hack at it. (Using the same roll, AC 30 and 11 damage.)

The Shields continue the battle against the undead. It looks like the combined efforts of the group may finally vanquish the foul beast standing in the doorway.

Angus casts Magic Missile at the Ogre Zombie after tossing a cure potion to Lang. The Zombie still stands after the magic strikes the creature.

Belkior casts the powerful spell Holy Smite, centering it on the second level, almost directly above Wynn. The burst of Holiness affects S3, S4, VS1, VS2, Troll & Wynn. The Zombie is protected from the burst by the walls and ceiling.

Xenia wisely or unwisely continues her taunting of the Vampire. She retrieves her mirror and tries to reflect the sunshine at the Vampire. She is moderately successful as the Vampire puts her hands up to shield her face from the reflected sunbeam (OOC - I have know idea if this would work or not. I do not think it would be more than a distraction, maybe like bluff skill).

Lang stands up and drinks the potion offered by Angus. He has one sword in his hand and one at the ground at his feet. He calls Sunshine to his side.

Wynn tumbles past the Troll and takes a defensive position against the undead. The girl cowers next to him, hands over her head to ward off any blows. He tries to comfort her, but she is in too much fear to hear him.

Ashlan takes some mighty swings at the Ogre, but just cannot seem to connect. He wonders if it is the spell that has affected him or the Ogre's armor.

The raging Famina slashes into the side of the Ogre. It is a vicious blow (damage 11) and it finally topples the foul creature. The Ogre falls to the ground in front of Syr, Famina and Ashlan, never to rise again.

Syr lightly steps around the Ogre and moves to engage the Troll. He enters the Troll's great reach and takes a claw strike. His attack, once within range, is unsuccessful.

Syr AoO hit AC 28; damage 12 (after Prayer.

Start CR #6:

The Troll, unconcerned that Wynn and Syr are flanking it, strikes out at the two of them.

Wynn claw hit AC 21; no damage after Prayer.
Wynn bite hit AC 12; no damage after Prayer.

The three wolves silently move forward and attack Wynn as he moves into there area of the building. One almost gets a hold, but Wynn dodges the creature's bite.

W1 hit AC 22; no damage.
W2 hit AC 9; no damage.
W3 hit AC 19; no damage.

Now that the Ogre is down, the 2 Vampire Spawn have a little better view of the group in the doorway. Vampire Spawn #2 raises his hand and a bolt of lightning streaks forth at the group clustered in the doorway. It strikes Famina, Ashlan, Lang and Belkior.

Lightning Bolt Reflex DC 14; damage 15/7.

Vampire Spawn #1 leans over the railing and casts a spell. A large mass of stick webs fills the area, covering the whole entranceway, the stairways and almost up to the roof or the second level. The Vampire Spawn cannot be seen now by anyone in their current position, except possibly Wynn.

Syr Web reflex DC 13 to be stuck/slowed movement.

Xenia sees the Vampire move back into the darkness area to get away from Xenia's sunbeam reflection (Listen DC 20 to hear that she cast another spell, but nothing visible happens).

From the corner of his eye, he sees the glob falling from above and steps aside quickly (reflex 23). He moves closer to the troll trying to stay inside it's wide reach. With a wierd fascination, he studies the mass of bones looking for a weak spot. Deciding to target it's joints, he lands a three punch combination on the creature's hip (attack 23,25,24 dam 6,13,6).

Angus lets out a sigh of relief as the bolt of lightning does not touch him, then the web comes down. Angus shouts to his fellows "They are just trying to slow us down so that they can heal. Push Forward!"

Angus know he and Belkior will have a tough time with the web (spellcraft 22)and cast dispel magic (21) on the spell.

Angus desparately wants to cast other spells, but all the vampires seem to be spell casters.

Angus will wait for the others to move forward, not wanting to slow the warriors of the Shield, and then take a stand by the dead ogre.

Lang just rolls out of the way when the lightning bolt strikes and the bugbear thinks to himself, this is the second time in as many days that I have been bolted.

Lang picks up his fallen sword and moves forward to attack the troll. "Stay behind me Sunshine." Animal handle 14. Lang his hoping to keep Sunshine out of the reach of the foul beast, knowing full well that theblow may fall on himself.

Lang launches one mightly blow on the troll and slices air.

AC 13 (nat. 1), miss as Lang was too worried about the well being of Sunshine to take an accurate swing.

Lang yells to Wynn "We have this pile of bones, take out the wolves!"

Wynn hears Lang's call to focus on the wolves, but in his weakened state, outnumbered, with a girl to protect and a weapon that past experience has taught him will do little damage to skeletons, he opts for defence and stays crouched over the girl, ready to defend her and himself from all foes.

Regardless, he manages at least one good hack at the skeletal troll [Hit AC=23 for 7 HP assuming Wynn is still flanking - Combat expertise -5 to Hit, +5 to AC].

"Help me get this girl out of here!" he calls out to his friends, the deperation in his voice is evident to all. He tries to look above for further signs of the vampires and their spawn, but dodging wolves and trolls is tricky business and he has little time for sight seeing [Spot=9 Blch!]

Things sound like they're hotting up inside.

A cork goes *pop* at a quick flick of the dark rogue's thumb, and she feels the invisible Shield spring up before her after she drinks. Then, drawing a light mace, Xenia charges toward the door.

The one person who obviously will not listen anybody else's orders is Famina. The zombie in front of her down, she dashes forward and takes up the closest enemy, in this case probably the Troll skeleton. Let it take a swing at her, she'll take it down a few bones or so... but as she moves in, she trips on a loose floorboard and her swing wildly misses! Nearly decapitating one or two of her companions, too. (Natural 1...sigh!)

End CR #6:

Syr continues his attack against the Troll hitting it three times.

Angus sees the webs fill the entranceway and casts dispel magic one again. This time he is successful on the first attempt. The webs disappear. The Vampire Spawn cannot be seen.

Lang and Sunshine move forward and Lang attacks the Troll, but misses. He does draw an AoO for his dedication and has flashbacks when the Troll also claws his face off.

Lang hit AC 30(14); non-critical damage 10 after Prayer.

Wynn continues to fight defensively, protecting the girl. He manages to nick one of the Trolls bones (damage 2 after DR). He yells for help.

Belkior spends the round healing himself with his wand. The undead breathe a sigh of relief when the diminutive cleric focuses his attention on himself instead of them.

Xenia drinks a potion and moves closer to the battle. She is now 15 or so feet to Angus's left.

Famina continues to rage and moves into the entranceway. She has know direct route to attack the undead so she climbs partially up the stairs and leans over the railing and swings. Unfortunately the weird angle and distance to her opponent affects her swing and she misses (you are on the stairs to the left of Sunshine (cell M20); you feel it will be quite difficult to hit the Troll from that position; Lang is blocking your path to the interior of the ground level. Up the stairs is wide open).

Ashlan remains where he is as the doorway is getting quite crowded.

Start CR #7:

The Troll strikes out at the 3 Shields that are fighting it. Belkior's Prayer spell saves the day as the creature's claws both miss due to it.

Wynn claw hit AC 25; no damage after Prayer.
Lang claw hit AC 21; no damage after Prayer.
Syr bite hit AC 12; no damage after Prayer.

The three wolves attack Wynn, once again getting close but not connecting.

W1 hit AC 19; no damage.

As Xenia moves closer to the battle she feels a presence behind her. She feels a creature strike at her, but her instinct lets her protect herself (fiendish ape attacks with reach).

The halfling cleric moves into the house, standing over the body of the zombie ogre. He calls out to Xenia as he goes, "Get close to me and the ape won't be a problem."

Once he is in the doorway, Belkior focuses his energy and invokes the positive energy of Alemi to repel the undead. He channels the energy and manages to overcome the penalty imposed by the unholy spell protecting the mansion.

Wynn manages to stave off the attacking wolves and just manages to swing his head back as the claw of the troll whistles by his face. "Too close" he thinks to himself, "too bloody close."

"C'mon girl", he drops one hand to reassure the child at his feet, "see if you can stay by me". If the child shows signs of moving with him, the bard will shuffle 5' away from the wolves and once again prepare his defence, otherwise he continues to stand his guard over the girl where she lays. The bard continues to focus what little offence he has on the troll.

We have taken almost everything they've thrown at us. Do we keep pressing or back down now? They can't have THAT much left."

Ow! Xenia whirls. "You are an annoyance!" She points the tip of the mace at the lumbering ape.

"Don't worry about me, Belkie. Hold the door against this Ape thing. I'm going in and set some fires. Angus, you better find cover or you'll be all alone out here with Hair Boy."

The, the dark rogue, distaining the reach of the ape, simply backs away keeping the invisible shield between herself and the monkey. Then she turns and leaves. Xenia charges through the front door, dodging sideways through the reach of the really really large skeleton troll with the Shield between them too, and turns sharply up the stairs. The rogue's eyes sweep the second story at the level of the floor, searching for feet. Her ears listen for the sound of movement upstairs. Where are you, vampy guys?

"Get ready to clear guys. I'm gonna start burning stuff up."

Question
If a creature is hidden within an area of Darkness, wherein creatures on the outside cannot see in. Should it not be true that the creature within the darkness cannot see out?

DM - You will not get the Shield bonus for the AoO by the Ape as you leave his range.

Why not? If a character with dark vision can stand in the light (campfire) and see into the darkness, why couldn't a character in shadows (which is the description in the spell) see out into the light?


[ Could you explain in a bit more detail why the Shield bonus would not apply? Helps me to be a better player to know these things.

And if the Darkness spell is Shadows, why can't those with Low Light vision not see inside? From the description, all it takes is the dimmest of light sources. -- Al

DM - Don't know, but in the spell it talks about vision types and what they cannot do in relation to concealment (which also talks about vision types).

Shield creates an invisible, tower shield-sized mobile disk of force that hovers in front of you.

If you continue moving towards the door, your back will be exposed. If this is a wrong interpretation of the spell let me know.


[ Your interpretation of the Shield spell sounds fair enough. But it basically boils down to nothing but an RP thing. If I alter nothing but the roleplaying aspects and state that Xenia walks backwards for 5 feet and then turns to head for the house it changes absolutely nothing. The game mechanics remain the same. If you wish, I can do that for you.

As to the Darkness, I think John has hit it on the head with his Private post. Darkness grants the 20% miss chance regardless of Vision type. But we should all still be able to see them. -- Al

DM - the reason I said that you wouldn't get the bonus is because your post said "simply turns and leaves". So yes, if you want to change it to say backs out of the apes reach then moves into the building, then you can get the +4 shield bonus.

Angus is glad to see the troll fall to Syr's assualt and hear the monks confidence "Syr Clear a path for Wynn and take on any spawn you see. We have to kill the spell users and fast."

Angus sees the ape appear and heeds Xenia's warning as he move forward next to Belkior. "Hey little buddy, you are doing great. I will test our your magical protections."

Angus decides on the need for more protection and cast shield spell on himself.

Angus yells at Ashlan "Get your finger out of your ear before that ape rips your head off."

Lang takes the slash from the troll and figures this is just not his day and move forward to the wolves (if still around) and attacks on with Sunshine in tow.

AC 17, hit for 9-5 = 4 damage

IF the Troll is still standing, Lang will launch a full attack on the foul undead.

End CR #7:

Belkior moves forward and brandishes his holy symbol, attempting to turn or destroy the undead. He sees the 3 wolves flee from around Wynn back into the rear recesses of the building. They cower back there.

Wynn continues to fight defensively, once again hits the Troll for a minor wound (damage 3 after DR). He tries to coax the girl to move with him now that the wolves are gone. She looks at Wynn as if seeing him for the first time. She stands where she is, but plasters herself against the wall as far from the troll as possible. "Ppplease don't let them bbburn my friends," she stammers to Wynn.

Syr's fists continue to pound the Troll. Pieces of bone are starting to fly everywhere as he lands 3 blows.

Xenia ignores the ape and continues her progress. The ape takes one last swing at her before she enters the building. She makes it into the home and proceeds up the right stairs, ending up at the top of the stairs on the second level. She sees a corridor running both ways away from the stairs. The left corridor disappears into shadowy darkness. There are plenty of closed doors for her to open. Ape AoO hit AC 20 for no damage.

OOC - after a long discussion on the rules board by many people, it has been generally decided that the Darkness spell affects creatures within looking outside as it does creatures outside looking within. In general, the spell gives off shadowy illumination that provides 20% concealment. You can see the creatures/items in the darkness, but they are hard to target or identify.

Angus moves forward to be near Belkior's protection spell and casts a spell upon himself..

Lang attacks the Troll with his full attack. He is able to knock a few more bones off the creature (damage is 1d6+3; I rolled above for 1 & 4 after DR). Sunshine tries to attack but cannot get close enough to the Troll to do so.

Famina & Ashlan also try to get closer to the battle but the narrow entranceway and all the bodies do not allow it.

OOC -- if Lang does not move you can make a tumble, bull rush or overrun attack to get by him.

Start CR #8:

The Troll fights on. He has gaping holes in his skeleton where the Shields have damaged him. The missing bones are obviously affecting his fighting ability.

Relieved that the three wolf skeletons have retreated, the bard stands his ground between the troll and the girl, protecting her with his longsword. Once again he manages to chip off a small peice of bone, and wonders if all he is doing is distracting the beast. [Hit AC=11 and Nat 20 for 7 dmg]

Angus is very happy that the ape can not attack the group as they did not need another oppentent right now. Angus is more concerned that the troll has not fallen yet and takes a harder look at the undead (spellcraft 24).

Angus calls to Ashlan and Famina "We must press the spawn before they regenerate. Lang, Wynn and Syr will finish the troll, you two move up the stairs. I will follow."

Angus casts invisibility on Ashlan before he heads up the stairs and whispers "Make'em pay."

Angus waits for Ashlan and Famina to move up the stairs in front of him. Angus will stay on the stair and see what his friends encounter so as to best use his spells.

The bones of two dead skeletons lie piled across the open space between the walkway upon which Xenia stands and the walkway before which lies the shuttered window. There would be no getting to the window from here.

To the east, the corridor seems to end in an empty door. To the west lies the darkness ... and what seems to be a corner.

Darkness can work both ways. Darkness can be friend as well as foe.

Softly, the rogue creeps down the corridor, quiet as a cat. Her eyes are peeled for the vampies. Bimbo Girl is around here somewhere. Then Xenia, dark of skin, melds with the dark of the spell that plagues this unholy house.

They're here somewhere. The dark rogue strains her senses to detect their movement, the step of a foot, the rustle of clothing. Any sound. Any sight.

Puzzled that the troll didn't fall under his combination the elf pauses to examine the monstrousity. "It's resistant to my blows. Hey Belk, does a dead troll heal the same way as a live troll?"

If Wynn's last blows didn't fell the creature, he steps in again and connects with another solid punch (att 25,16,16 dam 11).

If the creature does fall, then he grins with anticipation, "Guess who is coming up in the world." He takes the stairs closest to him and races to the 2nd level.

Wynn nicks the Troll for another minor wound (damage 2 after DR). He calls out to the Shields to hold up on the fire. The girl stands still, keeping and eye on the Troll.

Belkior coaxes Sunshine to move and heals Lang.

Angus directs traffic, pushing the Shields to find the Vampire.

Lang attacks the Troll. His first hit knocks a rib bone out. His second hit causes the whole skeleton to fall apart. He stands there amazed at the pile of bones in front of him. Sunshine moves to let Belkior by.

Xenia looks down both corridors. She picks the corridor mostly shrouded in shadows. She quietly and slowly moves, all the while listening for noise. She passes two doors that are not in the darkness. As she passes the door on the front side of the building she can hear scraping noises inside. She ends her move just inside the darkness spell.

Ashlan runs up the left stairway. He gets to the top and sees a corridor going each direction, the left one ending in shadowy darkness. He sees many doors, but does not see Xenia.

Famina also runs up the left stairway, ending up right next to Ashlan. She sees the same thing as Ashlan and does not see Xenia.

Syr's sees the Troll finally fall. He sees Ashlan and Famina race up the left stairs. He takes the clear stairway on the right and gets up to the second level. He sees the same things that Ashlan and Famina see. He also does not see Xenia.

Start CR #9:

The three wolves continue to cower in the back of the building.

The building goes semi-quiet as the battle stops. The only sounds to be heard are the heavy breathing of the combatants and the creaking of armor as people move.

Lang is relieved that the troll finally falls and calls a warning to Wynn. "Beware of the wolves. Nice job with the girl." Lang smiles a toothy grin and then head upstairs to follow Syr.

Lang pulls out his CLW wand on the way and taps himself with it, and feels the healing magic close some of the many wounds he has already sustained.

Lang give a quick low whistle for Sunshine to heel (animal handle 19) and the two head up the right stairway after Syr.

When Lang passes Belkior he quickly adds. "Wynn can use our touch." Lang then takes the stairs 2 at a time.

The door just ahead must be the door to the balcony, and it's trapped. Something behind the door just passed, but that can wait. The guys clumping up the stairs are gonna draw all sorts of attention. But maybe that's a good thing.

Stepping a quiet five feet forward, the rogue stoops low and holds her mirror out around the corner, scanning the corridor beyond.

Syr whispers "Thanks, hold the others and I'll call for when I move." to Angus before turning his attention on himself. Working quickly, he tries to calm his heart and turns his energies inward. Feeling his pulse throbbing, he focuses on slowing the bloodflow from his two cuts (heal 16hp). Wishing that he could see the effect, he stares at the empty space where he would expect to see a limb. There's no visible monsters, and she can't tell where they are...combat is (in the barbarian's mind) over for the moment. Or is it? She charges up to the first door and tries to elbow her way through it. (Str check DC 10... 11 if you count prayer, which I don't think you do. It doesn't break, but it might be jarred open)
Perhaps it throws her to the ground, perhaps not. In any case, if she still doesn't sight any enemy by her next turn, she'll be sliipping out of her rage...

End CR #9:

Wynn and the girl move over to Belkior and cures himself. He questions the girl about her necklace. She looks like she is 14 or 15 years old. She looks like she is going to breakdown again before she takes a deep breathe. "My ffffriends and I came here to practice wwwwitchcraft. We didn't expect what happened." She the breaks down crying again.

Angus casts invisibility on Syr and moves to inspect a door (K4), and finds nothing with his read magic.

Lang cures himself and heads up the right stairs.

Xenia moves forward another 5'. She takes out her mirror and uses it to peer around the corner. In the murkiness she can make out more walls and one more closed door.

Belkior uses his wand on Wynn. He examines the girl, but cannot find any visible injuries.

Syr's moves 5' closer to Angus and receives the invisibility spell. He then cures himself with his monk ability.

Famina feels her rage start to slip. She sees Angus at the one door so she moves to the other (J6). She grabs the handle and tries to muscle it open. The door resists her strength, but the handle does not. The handle turns and the door opens revealing the ape, half in the shadows and half in the normal light of the room. The double windows are open and nothing else is in the room, but a couple of closed doors. The ape sees Famina and let's out a grunt.

Ashlan remains where he is at as it is getting crowded.

It is getting tight up here on the second level. Please be aware of that in your posting. Also please try to pick a spot you end up in.

The halfling cleric hands the potion to Wynn, smiling when he sees the bard regain the vigor that he should have.

"Wynn, I need to move upstairs to support the others. Can you keep the girl safe?"

Turning to the girl, Belkior continues to speak.

"Your friends are the two covered in tattoos? I'm sorry if they are because ...," and Belkior trails off. He knows what has to be done but he can't really bring himself to tell the girl.

After doing that, Belkior heads up the west stairs. He doesn't quite reach the second floor but is closer to his companions so that his protective magics shield most of them.

Angus bumps into the now invisible Ashlan and is shocked that he has not moved and whispers tersely "Get moving Ashlan. If you want to be part of this group you have to carry your weight in a fight and so far you are frezzing up far too often. Get moving man and help find the vampires."

Once past the statue that is Ashlan, Angus sees Famina attempt to open the door too late and inwardly cringes at what may be behind it. Seeing the ape over Famina shoulder Angus gives a temporay sigh of relief that it is not a vampire, knowing that they will have to face them soon enough.

Angus aims two scorching rays at the fiendish ape.

AC 18 for 15 damage
AC 14 for 19 damage

Angus is pleased with himself as the two rays strike the beast chest.

Lang smiles at Sunshine being at his side and sees Famina and Angus down the hall, fighting in a doorway. The hallway is crowded already and no real fighting is heard so Lang taps himself with his wand again as he steps toward the door in front of him and listens (21).

Lang's wand drops back to his belt (on thong) and he opens the door a bit as he does not want any undead sneaking up on them. Lang uses his darkvision to see what he can see (spot 24), his short swords are at the ready.

A quick glance behind as a growl comes out of the door that Famina's just opened. So that's where Hairboy went to.

Xenia takes one last look around the corner. But this time, she aims the mirror up, scoping the walls and ceiling.

Not there? Good. That means there's only one place she could be.

Xenia mulls the construct that she's built within her mind. The model of the layout of this place based upon what she's seen so far. She's not down this dead end hall. Didn't go out that door, that's to the outside. Didn't cross to the east side of the house. The guys would have seen her from below if she had tried that. And you'd think they'd have the sense to say something about it. I mean, we work as a team, right?

That means there's only one place she could have gone.

"Angus! She went through the door behind you! From the position of the balcony outside it's probs one big room so she's maybe got access to the other side too."

Too crowded. The corridor is too crowded.

"Angus, open the door. I'm coming through."

Leave the Grape Ape to Fammie. She can cover their back sides.

The hair stands on the back of Angus's neck as he hears Xenia say the Vampires are behind him. "I'm moving" Angus whispers and will back up through Ashlan, trying to get the ranger to wake up.

Angus will end up behind Ashlan, giving Xenia the room she needs to maneuver.

Angus is inwardly concerned that the vampires may have taken over Ashlan and maybe even Famina, with their lack of action.

Angus also thinks that the vampires might be hiding in the darkness behind the ape, neither spot is good, it is too close......

Seeing an obvious enemy leaves no room in her mind for conscious thought. With a few quick fleeting steps she crosses the room to the grunting creature and sweeps her sword across its flank sharply. She gives out a frenzied grunt of her own, which translates roughly to 'Take that!' in Gruntenese. (Hit AC 22, and 11 damage. :) )

DM - You can take a full attack action against the ape as it is close enough to you (within 5').

(Sweet!) After the rough chop, Famina follows up with a graceful, if savage, gut stab. She feels the blade slide into its belly satisfyingly, and has the grace in her rage to also snarl and spit in its face. Most lady-like.

"First thing is to get the windows open. Then, if anyone can use a sling, I got a pouch full of Magic Silver sling bullets on my hip."

End CR #10:

The Shields on the second level do more searching and some combat. Angus and Famina send the fiendish ape back to the evil planes it came from. The two peer into the now creatureless room, half of which lies in shadows. They see what looks like typical bedroom furniture. It all looks in fairly decent shape, but rather dusty. They also see 3 more doors, two of switch are in the shadowy area. The tree doors are closed. Angus also prods Ashlan into action and then moves.

Lang and Syr open two more doors. Lang's room is empty of visible creatures, but does have some bedroom furniture. The furniture does not leave much room for hiding. Syr's room reveals the same as Lang's, except for corridor that leads to the front balcony.

Ashlan remains where he is.

Xenia uses her mirror examines more of the area, from floor to ceiling. Even in the shadows she can tell there is no creatures lurking there. She moves back down the hallway to the spot outside the doorway facing the back of the home. She opens the door and looks into the room. It is yet another bedroom, of which some is in the magical shadows. No creature is visible in the lit area and 2 doors can be made out in the unlit area, both closed.

Wynn and Belkior continue to question the girl. Her crying spell only lasts but a moment. She regains her composure and tells them.

"My friends and I would sneak here from time to time. We would act like witches or at least what we thought witches would act like, and these necklaces we made were the symbol of our coven. We would cast magic spells and brew magical potions trying to impress one another. Nothing ever real came about from it. We would blame it on being inexperienced witches even though deep down we knew we were not real witches and nothing magical would ever happen. Then one day we came here and she was here with her foul creatures. She captured us and chained us to keep us from escaping."

"But what she didn't know was that my friend Marina's father is a powerful wizard and he would come looking for us {glimmer of hope on her face}. And he did come and he tried to fight her and her minions, but in the end she was too strong for him and captured him also {sadness back on her face}. She threatened to kill Marina and the rest of us if he did not do what she wanted. He refused to do what she asked of him. That night she took Sylvia and Marina's dad out of the building and only Marina's dad came back. He was very shaken and would not speak about what happened, but we all know that Sylvia was killed because from that day forward he did what she asked."

"The tattooed creatures is what she wanted. Marina's dad uses his magic and some book she gave him to turn the undead into those tattooed beasts. It turns them into spell casters like Marina's dad. They are even more dangerous than the normal undead version."

"Please you must save my friends and Marina's father."

Angus is dismayed that Ashlan's seems to be paralyzed with fear by the vampires, but he must leave the ranger to his own devices as he has clearly left the group.

Angus moves forward toward Xenia. "I can use a sling, but I prefer not too if you get my meaning. This should help your sneaking. Find a good spot for your blade in the back of one of the vampires."

Angus roughly moves past the defunct Ashlan and makes Xenia invisible.

To the now invisible Xenia, Angus whispers "We must hurry, spells are running low."

Lang is pleased to see that there appears to be nothing to worry about in the empty bedroom. Lang is a bit startled when the door behind him opens, but figures that Angus has been turning the party invisible as Xenia disappears and with the Sorcerers whispered pleadings for Ashlan to do something.

Lang whispers to the invisible Syr, hoping he is in the general area. "I am moving up with the others, nothing in my room."

Lang and Sunshine move forward and Lang comments to their frail sorcerer. "I can smell the acid on you, this should help." Lang taps Angus with his CLW wand for 8 points back as he moves past him into the room with Famina.

Lang grips his short swords and whispers. "Where are the vampires?"

No enemies again! This infuriates the barbarian, whose combat senses almost immediately tell her to smash the next thing, Ashlan! No, first must find real enemy, she tells herself. It must be...in the darkness!
Without thinking, she rushes towards the shadowy side of the room and swings open the door on the left. If she sees anything vaguely threatening, she throws herself at it, swinging. (AC 17, damage 10) If there's nothing in there, she does see the door which leads further into the darkness, and will proceed that way. (5' step.. should end in H8 or H9 this round I think.)

End CR #11:

The Shields on the second level continue their searching as combat has temporarily ceased. Xenia moves into a room and throws open the shutters. Sunlight pours in, lighting the room where the darkness spell isn't, but it does not reveal anything new. Angus slips into the room and moves up to Xenia and casts invisibility on her. He warns her that his spells are running low. Lang & Sunshine also move, following Angus. He cures Angus and questions where the vampires are hiding. The invisible Syr moves to another room and opens the door. He finds yet another empty bedroom. This room has one closed door within it. Famina moves into the shadowy area and opens one of the doors. It appears to be a storage closet as it has some chairs and a table stacked in the back of it (H9), along with another door. She moves towards the door and practically breaks her ankle as she steps in a hole in the floor that she couldn't see due to the darkness spell. Belkior decides a more magical route to find the vampire, he casts the spell Detect Undead. He looks towards the darkness area and scans, figuring he will get almost the whole second level this side of the staircase (see pg. 307 of DMG for cone shapes). His detect undead scanning does NOT reveal any undead aura in this area.

The invisible Ashlan is frozen in place. Is it due to fear of the Vampires or perhaps something more sinister.

Wynn remains by the girl's side to protect her. He calls up to the Shields to let them know there may be more people being held captive by the vampire. The girls whimpers softly next to Wynn. She is ever watchful of the ogre and troll bodies lying on the floor, as if expecting them to rise again and attack her.

Continue to be aware of space in your posts and the spot you want to end up in.

Xenia ghosts quietly across the room and just out of the sunlight. She listens carefully at both wooden doors. Then, with equal quiet, she eases the door open.

Angus waits for the Shields to assemble. In the mean time he holds out a scroll and calls to Xenia. "This is an old Shield scroll that I have no real need of at the present. It may be best for you."

Lang will walk over to window and on the way tap himself with his CLW wand again. Lang will drop his swords and open the window, mimicing Xenia's action.

Famina comes out of her trance due to, not the pain, but the lack of enemies. Then she feels the pain. "Ow..." she grunts, and stops. She hears the voices, dimly, through the walls, including the call to gather. She looks back and sees Lang watching her and backing her up. Suddenly, exhaustion floods her...but Famina nods to him. "We'd better regroup with the others in the hall," she says as she walks back towardshim. She keeps her sword in hand, though, just in case one of those vampires pops outta nowhere..

Wynn guides the girl around the remains of the ogre, escorting her out into the yard and into a space of bright sunlight, far from any shadows. "You'll be safe here. Please...don't move from this spot!" The bard wonders if he should give her one of his weapons, but dismisses the idea. It could only bring trouble her way.

Wynn scans the yard and the outside of the building before heading back inside.

The searching of the second level continues. The Shields are moving room by room, closet by closet in search of the vampire and her minions. Xenia, invisibly, moves to one of the doors in the room she is currently in. She hears nothing as she moves and opens the door and finds what appears to be a sitting room as it has a couch, chairs and a table. The room is in the darkness spell and there does not appear to be any creatures, windows or doors in this room. Angus calls the group to him and remains where he is. Lang & Sunshine move into the room where Famina went. He cures himself and moves over to the open window, kicking some skeleton bones out of the way. He looks out and sees a nice burned out circle and some trampled grass. Famina moves out of the small closet and back to the doorway to the main room, after hearing Angus's call to re-assemble. Belkior scans towards the other end of the second level. His detect undead scanning in this direction also does NOT reveal any undead auras. The invisible Syr backs out of the room he is in and opens the door to the back side of the building. The bedroom is empty of creatures or other doors. It does, however, have a window in it. He starts to move back towards Angus, ending up next to Belkior.

Ashlan is ???

Wynn walks the girls outside. She is very reluctant to leave the building. "I do not want to leave my friends locked up in that room. What can you do to save them? You must help them!" She is even more upset when Wynn plans on leaving her outside by herself. "But what about the wolves. They may attack me now that you and the cleric are not here to protect me." Wynn does not see or hear anything unusual outside.

OOC -- Wynn where do you want to end up? You have 30' of movement left if you leave the girls side.

Angus looks out into the hallway in the area where he left Ashlan. "We leave Ashlan, my invisibility will give him protection. He is of no use to us now anyway, the fear has him now."

Lang looks around the room and opens both doors, looking for a way to get to the Vampires. Once he finds the hole in the floor he bends down to inspect it "I think I found where the vampires went. They went down the drain."

Lang will tap himself with his CLW wand again. "This thing is handy. Anyone else need a tap before we go back downstairs?"

Lang looks at his short swords and comments to those in attendance. "Does anyone have a heftier weapon? In my weakened state, I am having trouble damaging the undead." Lang is still feeling the effects of the ray of enfeeblement.

Sunshine gives a low growl as if ready for some action.

Rejoining the others he reports to Angus, "East wing looked clear but I didn't search very thoroughly." As the others strain to pinpoint his voice, he mentions, "Angus, you made the spell, shouldn't you be able to see the results?"

After Lang's offer he waits for the bugbear to exit the room and and places a hand firmly on his shoulder, "Tap me gently if you can?" (I rolled the 7 hp, if you don't mind to speed up the process)

Once healed, he decides not to follow the others. Rather, the monk gently drops down from the balcony, bumping the wall twice to slow his fall (Ends up in N18).

Xenia's invisible hand throws open the closet door. She gives it the quick once over as she talks to Angus.

"You know, if they can escape downstairs, Angus, they can just as easily escape back upstairs."

"And if we can't find their coffins, I don't know that we can have the kids stay in a place like this. I mean, we don't even know why these vampies came here in the first place. What's to say that more won't be liking it too?"

"Think about it, Angus. We need to find out if this place is gonna be safe for the kids. I'm gonna go downstairs and check the rooms there. Think about it, huh?"

Then, without a sound, Xenia leaves the room and heads down the stairs.

The searching for the most part halts. Xenia opens up one final door, sees an empty closet and heads downstairs. Angus calls for the group to gather, moves out into the hallway and heads downstairs. Lang & Sunshine check behind the two doors of the room they are in. They are both closets. He bends down and inspects the 1' diameter hole and is pretty sure he can see to the lower level through the shadows. He stands up and cures himself. Famina moves downstairs. Belkior moves downstairs and scans towards the west end of the lower level. His detect undead scanning finally detects the presence of undead auras. Syr drops down to the lower level.

OOC -- Syr you can get cured, but have to move into the room with Lang. Or you can drop down to the lower level like I did on the map.

The invisible Ashlan says he will go outside and protect the girl.

She hits the floor with a tumbling roll. Xenia spares the skeleton wolves and the mound of troll bones a cautious glance. ... weird stuff ...

"I'm heading to the west doors," she whispers to her companions before heading down the hall.

Then Wynn's voice drifts in from outside. The room under the Balcony! Xenia looks into the darkness down the hall and the door at the very end.

Still, better to make sure there are no surprises along the way. Turning to the first door on the north side of the hall, Xenia throws it wide and looks in.

Angus is glad to be moving again and he quickly looses contact with the invisible Xenia. "Wynn, Famina and Lang, form up with me around Belkior. Ashlan has the girl for now. Famina and Lang are our door kickers, the rest are support. Belkior point the way." ANgus waits for Belkiro to point out the undead with his detection spell.

In a much softer voice "Xenia and Syr are our rovers."

Lang moves downstairs and upon hearing Angu's instructions, plants his big hairy foot in the middle of the the door at O4. (Strenght Check 15) The big Bugbear is still not up to snuff as he is still feeling the effects of the enfeeblement.

If the door does not open to Lang's foot, he will try the handle, sheepishly.

The halfling cleric calls out to his companions, "Undead to the west!"

Belkior continues to concentrate on the western half of the ground floor, attempting to determine how many undead are lurking in the darkness.

After learning that information, he will move to the center of the ground floor in preparation for the advance to the west. Hopefully his companions will be there soon to back up whoever just opened the west door.

Famina almost charges the invisible voice out of pure reflex, bringing her blade up! Then she recognizes it as Xenia. What a foolish thing to do, to wander around invisible in the middle of a fight... Who knows, the vampires may be able to see invisible, or be invisible themselves, and... well, it could just be messy. Magic is always messy, she tells herself...
She forms up in a formation as requested and stands ready. Next to Belkior, facing the west as he pointed out, ready for something bad to happen...

End CR #14:

The group gathers on the main level to search for the Vampires. Belkior has detected the undead and the girl has pointed out where she thinks they are. Xenia drops down to the first level and opens up the door to one of the rooms. The room is empty of creatures, but does have some furniture in it. Angus calls out some directions. He figures it will only be a problem for enlarged people in the areas where the corridor is only 5' or so wide. Lang & Sunshine move down to the first level and find a closet. Famina moves into position. Syr moves past the wolves through the opening into what looks like an empty kitchen. It does have a set of stairs going down in the far corner. Wynn moves inside and forms up near Angus.

Belkior spends more time scanning the area where he detected undead. He detects the auras of 7 undead. The strongest aura is overwhelming, but does not stun him.

The invisible Ashlan stays outside and protects the girl.

The corridor down the west end of the building is only 5' wide or so. Please be careful in following everyone's movement.

Angus whispers to the Shields "Belkior has found them. This is it. Prepare yourselves. Lang come here. I have some thing to help your strenght."

Angus moves forward and pulls out his enlarge scroll and casts it on Lang. The bugbear grows even larger and some of his strenght returns.

ooc: I am assuming that Lang can still travel down the hallways and fight effectivly, if not I will not cast the spell.

Angus lowers his voice even more. "Rovers move forward. The rest of us will follow flanking Belkior. Famina take point behind the rovers. Lang back her up."

Lang takes a deep breath and whispers again. "Lets go take them down."

Lang is excited to grow even further and feel some of his ample strenght return. The even bigger bugbear talks quietly to Famina. "I am right behind you girl. When we see the enemy push into the room to give me space." Lang smiles and is ready for battle.

As Lang waits for the group to form up and calls quietly to Syr. "Ready for a tap?" cured 6 hp.

Lang lets the invisible Syr guide his wand hand to him and then will wait a moment after he cures Syr for the rovers to move off in front. Lang prepares to follow Famina toward the west end of the building and into the darkness.

Xenia chews her lower lip as she looks down at the narrow narrow hallway. Perfect spot to trap anyone coming in. A simple grease would do it. Bad bad spot.

"Angus," she says from out of her invisibility, "charging down through that hall's a bad deal. Here's what I see we can do."

"First is safest. Open the door and look in. We find out two things. One, if their coffins are in there with them. Two, if they got hostages in there with them."

"If they don't got hostages, we just leave them. We search the rest of the house for the hostages, then we burn down the house. Who needs a house with narrow halls like this anyway?"

"If they don't got their coffins either, we don't even need to burn the house. We just find the coffins and take them out into the sunlight. Build a campfire and burn them."

"But, if they got hostages, here's how we gotta go in. See the two doors down there? We gotta all get into the side one, cause coming down this hall in line of sight is gonna be a killer. Getting in closer, and coming in from the side is the way to go. First people in should be the Invisible folk. Get in among them so they can't get off spells so easily."

"From then it's a free for all."

"First, though, I think we need to wait till Belkie tells us exactly where all of the undead guys are."

That said, Xenia opens the door across the hall.

Ashlan stays near the girl outside and keeps his eyes open for any possible danger to her and hopes if his friends need help that they will call out or something. Of course the child needs protected to so that might make things interesting.

If I remember right from what we were talking about earlier, these things need silver or magic to hurt them." In any case, she stands next to Belkior, figuring the Alemite is the one most likely to be able to hurt the undead.

"Hey Angus, there's a door across the room here." Xenia checks the hall again. "From the depth of things there must be another room beyond. But I don't see a door opening up into the hallway."

"This might be another way through besides the hall. I'm going to check it. Can someone else get the right door down the hall. That's still our best bet for breaking in on them without getting trapped in this bottleneck hallway."


Crossing the room, Xenia eases the door open and holds the mirror out at ground level. Turning it slowly, she examines the room on the other side.

Belkior continues his detection of the undead. He is able to determine that the 7 undead auras consist of 3 different strengths. There is 1 faint aura to his right, 5 moderate auras straight ahead and 1 overwhelming aura also straight ahead. The faint aura is the only one that is visible as it is the dead troll at Belkior's feet.

(This is with Belkior in N18 and facing towards the jut-end of the building.)

Syr moves and opens up a door that faces the front of the building. Through the gloom and shadows he can see what appears to be a library. There are no other doors in this room.

Upon hearing Angus's whispered orders, Lang moves into the hallway and follows Famina into the library.

Lang will whisper to Famina on the way, " Do you need a cure?" and will tap the barbarian with his wand if the answer is yes, for 7 hp.

Lang suggests to Famina "Lets attack the same vampire to finish them off faster, lets move to the right and circle the room."

Lang calls Sunshine to follow him. "Lets go boy." (Animal handle 14 - heel)

Once in the library Lang will look. listen and smell for targets/innocents and step to the right to allow those following to enter.

"I can hold them at bay, though. Probably long enough that the fighters can slip in behind me."

"We defintely don't want to get caught in this corridor while the vampires concentrate on the one person who makes it just inside the door."

Belkior looks at the floor and walls for scorch marks.

"Is it just me, or do you also get the feeling that this corridor is a perfect spot for someone hurling lightning bolts?"

Xenia feels the shield spell go down. She's on her own now. Nothing left in this room. From what he said, Syr must be up the hall somewhere.

The rogue figures the space in her head. The size of the room down the hall can't be more than 25 by 20 from the way it looked outside. And from what Belkie says there are six undead in there somewhere. Those are pretty tight quarters. Tight enough that there might not be hostages in there with them. 'Sides, who'd want strangers in their bedroom?

Take a chance.

The rogue slips out of the room and into the hall.

"Angus, I don't think the hostages are in the room with them. It's too crowded in there anyway. I'm gonna see if I can find where they got them stashed. Just in case, there's no other way to kill the vampies but to burn them out. Have Syr take a quick peek into the room. If the hostages are in there, sing out and I'll come back."

"Good luck, yeah?"


And without a sound, Xenia takes off down the hall in the opposite direction.

The halfling cleric wheels around when he hears the wolf skeletons attacking Wynn. Thinking to hold his turning ability in reserve, Belkior instead prays to Alemi.

A glowing warhammer appears next to the farthest wolf skeleton (#3) and immediately swings at it. The Spiritual Warhammer strikes true, shattering the skelton with one blow.

"Fall back with us, Wynn! If you stay close to me, those skeletons will be simply nuisances."

Acceding to Angus' strategy, Belkior allows Famina to push past him. Before he does so, however, Belkior will remove his last potion of Cure Moderate Wounds and hold it out for the big woman.

Angus is caught off guard by the wolves becoming active. "Belkior can you send the wolves away again? We do not need the distraction."

Angus looks at the line of battle and still has concerns, but is unsure of what can be done about it. Angus whispers "Lets open the door and push inside. Our goal is to get Belkior into the room to engage the master vampire."

Angus is not sure if Belkior will turn the wolves so he drops and acid orb on top of the one wolf that Belkior hit.

Lang smiles as he is happy to cure Famina, his new battle partner (cured 7 hp last round). Lang whispers to Famina and hopefully Syr too. "I hear someone behind the door. Let me go first, Belkior protected me."

Lang presses forward and asks Famina. "Just duck down and I will try the door over you. Remember lets you and I move to the right once we get in the room and take down any vampires together."

Lang reaches forward and trys the handle. If it is unlocked he will open the door and push himself and Famina into the room.

If the door is locked he will whisper to Famina. "Lets break it down."

Str check of 20 or 22 if Famina aids Lang.

Lang keeps his eyes, ears and nose open.

"HEY! FRIENDS OF THE GIRLIE!"

Fastest way to find them, is to get their help.

Syr hears Lang and silently steps into the room that he was in front of, allowing Lang to pass (g19). Smiling to himself (because no one can see him), he realizes that he is removed from the threat of any Lightning Bolt.

As the ranger moves down the hallway, "Just a thought but wouldn't Belkior's hammer do great against that door? Plus it may be warded similar to the outside areas of the building."

OOC - firing down the hallway past people and into the room will incur the standard -8 (-4 for firing onto combat and -4 for cover). More penalties may be applied if the action justifies it.

Belkior casts spiritual weapon and attacks W3 for 9 points of damage (undead are immune to crits).

Angus casts acid orb at W3 and hits it for 3 points of damage (d3 not d6).

Syr moves into the library allowing Famina, Lang & Sunshine to move forward to the door. Famina scrunches against the wall and Lang uses his magical height to reach over her and grasp the door knob. He gives it a quick turn and does not meet any resistance. With a quick shove he pushes the door open. Looking into the room, the Shields in the hallway can see the same magical darkness. Their eyes start to focus on the shadows in the room and they see ...

Xenia high-tails is down the stairs and into the basement, yelling the whole way. She reaches the bottom and sees a fair sized room. It is about 20 feet wide and 80 feet long. It is dark down there, but with her dark vision she does not see any creatures. The room looks like it is used for storage. There is shelving along the walls and broken and unbroken barrels and sacks of grain strewn about the place. On the shelving looks like your typical house wares such as cups, plates and things like that. No doors are visible, but then again the shelving covers up most of the walls from a direct view. Her yelling does not produce the desired effect.

With a whirl of his longsword, Wynn lashes out and strikes the three skeletons attacking him. He is able to damage all of them (damage 2, 3 & 5 after DR).

Ashlan, seeing the wolves attacking Wynn, rushes to his side. He stabs at W3 with his longsword (hit AC 21; damage 11 after DR). The wolf skeleton W3 falls to the ground in a pile of bones. The girl moves closer to the building, but does come inside. OOC - does anyone want to play Ashlan for this battle as Justin has left the Shields?

The remaining two wolves attack Wynn.

As the Shields eyes are able to penetrate the shadows of the Vampire's lair, things start to become apparent. Directly in front of them is a strange creature with a strange, snaky beard. The first thing you notice is its massive saw-toothed Glaive as it strikes out at Lang and Famina. You also notice that is has pointed ears and moist scaly skin - the mark of an outsider.

Hit Lang AC 28; damage 9; Infernal wound lose 2 points a round until special cure.

Also visible in the room, near the door are some human zombies. They do not attack. In the back of the room, chained to a throne-like structure are three human girls. They appear to be in there early teens and are sitting on the floor. In the back of the room, but not chained is a human male. He is standing next to the throne. No where to be seen are the two tattooed Vampire Spawn.

Seated on the throne-like structure is the Vampire. She is smiling.

The halfling cleric mutters to himself when he sees the tactical situation that the party is in.
Knowledge Planes = 12, not enough to recognize devil and know about it's weapon

Belkior thinks, "I should be in front, not stuck behind an exhausted barbarian and an enlarged bugbear. If I'd been in front, that summoned thing would simply be an obstacle, not something that might kill Lang and Famina.

"And I would have had a better shot at the vampire, maybe even taking her out of the combat right at the start."

Instead, Belkior re-directs his Spiritual Warhammer at the vampire. The spell is able to affect the undead, probably enough to prevent any spellcasting.

Lang knows he has to get in the room and will force his way past Famina. "Follow me." Lang says to the barbarian as he attempts to bull his way past the outsider.

Bull rush with weapons out:

The oversized Lang pushes back the outsider with the nasty glaive back using his shortswords and meaty armored shoulder as much as possible.

Well, here we are... Shouldn't we be exitting now, and throwing fireballs at them? Famina really doesn't know anymore. Xenia said something about that. But then she ran off, and now she's somewhere invisible, shouting off in the distance. Belkior said something about leading the way, but how could the little Alemite defeat a demon, two zombies, and a room of vampires by himself? Maybe one at a time, but as he did the poor halfling would be torn apart, without the tougher guys to stand between him and the monsters.
And if she were to shout an order to the group now, to do something unified, what would she say? Retreat? How many people would listen to her, a new recruit? If she were to do what the plan logically called for, and retreat, would they say she was running away? If there's one thing the proud woman would vehemently deny, it's being a coward.
So, with Lang leading the way with a courageous bullrush into the room, Famina follows her fuzzy companion's courageous push. She steps forward, provoking attacks readily from the zombies as she moves through their squares, to the side and into the corner (Trying to work my way to E20). Now, more people should be able to move up, and at the same time, more fighters should be able to easily push up, and everyone can get into the action.
(Btw, I should get +4 AC vs any provoked attacks of opportunity as I try to do this)
And, as she moves her way through the room, she makes sure to take a slash at the zombie. (Aka, either moving then attacking, or using Spring Attack to try to attack the zombie 2 as I move past him.)
(I hit AC 16 against the zombie. I did 11 damage to him.)

The elf sticks his head out into the hallway well aware that the others can't see him. Looking down the hallway, he tries to gauge how much space is left to squeeze past the others without any contact. If he can make it into the room without giving his invisibility away then he will move quickly to anywhere on column D. Otherwise, he will stay in the library as the others try to force their way into the room.

Wynn whirlwind attacks the 2 skeletons attacking him (damage 4 & 5 after DR).

Xenia moves back upstairs and opens the door to a room. It does not have any creatures in it and has minimal amount of furniture.

Belkior redirects his Spiritual Weapon and attacks the Vampire for 10 points of damage. He presses forward if possible. (OOC - yes please roll a 1-20% miss chance for each successful hit.).

Lang Bull Rushes the Glaive wielding outsider. His bull rush attack of 20 (base roll +17; str +3; size +4 & non-prof. -4) beats the bearded devil's 12. He is successful in pushing the creature back 10 feet until the creature is standing over one of the chained girls. She moves back as close to the throne-like structure as possible to avoid any contact with the devil. He commands Sunshine to attack but the trusty dog cannot get past him or Famina. Lang sees a third human zombie in the room.

Famina moves forward but is not able to squeeze by Lang and the Zombies (OOC - you may make an overrun, bull rush or tumble check to get by them). She does, however, get in range with her weapon and slashes Z2 pretty good for 11 damage (OOC - do not forget to roll 1-20% miss chance) .

Angus moves closer to Belkior.

Syr remains in the library waiting for an opening to dart into the Vampire's lair.

Lang knows he is in trouble and needs to move to get his friends in the room. lang moves to the right so that he is no longer blocking the doorway, but keeps contact with the outsider and strikes at him with his short swords.

Angus is concerned, thing are moving too slowly and the undead are not falling. Time to change tactics. Angus rushes forward, but makes sure that Famina and the invisible Syr have room to enter the room, but stays at the threshold of the room.

The halfling cleric manages to evade the summoned weapon when it appears. But Belkior knows that this might be the spell that puts him down. In turn, his spiritual warhammer misses the vampire.

Belkior heals himself with his Wand of Cure Moderate Wounds, expecting the summoned flail to hit him sooner or later.

Belkior still hasn't identified the summoned creature that they are fighting or anything about its abilities.

Question
Can we move past the other members of the group as long as we don't end up in an occupied square? Even if someone is a Large size, that should be possible.

You can move through a square occupied by a friendly character, unless you are charging. When you move through a square occupied by a friendly character, that character doesn't provide you with cover.


DM - My only concern is that the character may not be able to tell if there is an open space on the other side. How do I/we role play that?

They don't really. It's a leap into the dark. You just don't know if there will be a place to land on the other side. But that's what heroes do. They take risks because others are in danger. If you're looking for a roleplaying rational, I don't think there's any better than that.

From a gaming perspective, though, we all know that there's going to be space, otherwise the move would be disallowed. But, to an extent, I'm not sure there's any getting around the metagaming aspect of things.

If someone did, however, try to move into a space that was already occupied, I would move them back to their original position. Metagaming, I would tell them that that they could not wind up in an unoccupied space. At the same time I would roleplay that they could not break through the crush. -- Al

It seems that Lang's trying to move out of the way, but he still might not be able to, he's so big! In any case, Famina focuses on the zombie that she hit last turn, hoping to dispatch it then move into its square. She leans forward and slashes at its thigh, nearly severing a leg, then brings the sword up and across, forming a satisfying V across most of its body. The zombie falls (did 17 hp damage to it), and Famina jumps forward, kneeing it out of the way and forcing herself into its spot. She grins confidently, displaying a mouth astonishingly lacking in as many teeth as you'd expect.

DM - please roll two 1-20% miss chances for concealment. If you do not roll before I post I will roll for you (around 10).

Lang Knows he is totally committed and in big trouble, and he not even hit the outsider! Lang attempts to take out the frustration of his situation on the outsider.

Lang feels the glaive wound continue to bleed and knows that something is not right with it, but there is nothing the ranger can do for it right now.

Lang thinks to himself that it will take too long at this rate to kill the outsider. Lang backs up 5 feet to attempt to gain reach advantage on the outsider and make more room for the Shields.

Sunshine sences his masters plight and reboubles his attack on the dead flesh in front of him (Z1).

AC 19, damage for 9 damage.

Sunshine latches on to the dead flesh with a crunch. The dog grabs hold of the leg and attempts to pull the zombie to the ground.

Trip attempt 25 and Sunshine drags the pile of dead flesh to the ground. Sunshine jumps forward to take a better bite next round.

Angus give a little jump and the invisible Xenia sneaks up behind him. Very quietly Angus responds "We could be doing better? Can you get in and help?"

Angus peers into the darkness, wondering what spells if any he knocked of the master vampire, but more concerned for the seeming lack of damage Lang is doing and the amount he is taking.

Angus fires a magic missile spell at the outsider. Arcane knowledge roll to identify outsider 12.

Four magic missiles slam into the strange outsider for 15 damage.

Angus moves up behind Belkior and whispers to Famina and Belkior "Lets push into the left side of the room."

Angus is real concerned as Syr has not joined the combat.

The halfling cleric allows his spiritual warhammer to swing once more at the vampire, again missing.

Muttering to himself about the need to press forward and deal with the boss vampire, Belkior slips by Famina and into the room with the vampire.
Without knowing where Lang intended to move to, and where Sunshine went to, and the cost for moving through friend occupied squares, here's the possible locations for Belkior:

If he moves past the zombie, he will accept the possibility of an AoO.


Belkior then calls forth the pure, cauterizing light from Alemi. The ray of light hits the vampire squarely, burning a hole into her undead flesh.

The bard acts first, stepping back to back with him. As Ashlan turns to the sound, it's the perfect opportunity. But he's still shaky on his feet.

"We found the other two!" Ashlan shouts. "Two vampires in the main hall."

As the bard swings around him, Ashlan charges the vampire in the hall. Longsword, meet Vampire. Vampire, meet longsword.

"You coming, Bard?" Ashlan tosses the quip over his shoulder as he sneers at the vampire before him.

Quiet and invisible, Xenia stalks into action. She slides past Scorpion Boy and then dives easily past the vampy's feet. Fetching up in the middle of all of that, she's thinking ... Alright. Now what?

Famina growls at the zombie, and pushes forward, slashing at it and decapitating it cleanly. She steps into the space it occupied and goes into a guard position, facing the next zombies. Belkior then moves up and takes a shot at the vampire, so everything works out. We're getting in, she thinks to herself...

Wynn and Ashlan turn around at the sound of the girl's cutoff scream. Weakness comes upon Wynn as the Spawn hit him with some magic. They see the two tattooed Vampire Spawn at the end of the hallway near the entranceway. One is facing them and the other is facing the girl and appears to be talking to her. After the hysterics she did went Wynn got near her it is obvious that she is under the control of the Vampire Spawn. Ashlan moves forward and lays a vicious slice into VS1 (damage 9 after DR).

OOC - the front door was a double door about 10' wide. Each door covers half the center square (N22) and half of the square on either side. The remaining 2 ½ feet on squares M22 & O22 are wall. Only one of the doors was somewhat broken when they entered the home, so there is some, but not a lot of sunshine coming through the doorway.

Lang attacks the Bearded Devil, landing 3 out of 4 swings. A combination of damage reduction and strength reduction may make this a long fight for the big Ranger (total damage 6). Sunshine moves into the open space and attacks Z1 with a nice bite, (damage 4 after DR) and following it up with a trip, knocking the Zombie to the ground.

Angus tries to figure out what the outsider is but is unsuccessful. He casts magic missile at the foul creature and sees his 4 missiles slam into the beast. He then moves closer.

Belkior uses his small size to slip by Famina, through the spot recently vacated by Sunshine and into slot D19 (AoO from Z2 hit AC 10; 0 damage). He casts his spell at the Vampire, making sure that none of the creatures around him disrupt his concentration. The spell hits the Vampire square in the chest (damage 36). The smile leaves her face. Now that Belkior is real close to the devil he can tell that it is a Bearded Devil (OOC - from your roll you will know all there is to know about them).

OOC - I do not think you can force your magic circle upon a creature so I think the Devil can attack you if it wants to.

Xenia moves towards the battle in the front entranceway. She ends up on top of the dead Ogre Zombie, directly in the swath of sunshine that is coming through the front doors. She sees both Vampire Spawn look her direction.

Famina lays into Zombie Z2 ending its pathetic un-life. She then stands over the dead creature.

Syr moves out of the library and into the room. He sees Belkior move onto the position he wanted to. He ends his movement in E18.

Start CR #22:

OOC - Lang is not flanked as Z1 is prone.

Zombie 1 attacks Lang from the ground at --4. It then rises drawing AoO's from Lang, Sunshine & Syr. Zombie 3 attacks Belkior.

Z1 hits AC 19 (1); 8 damage (natural 20).
Z3 hits AC 18; 0 damage .

The bearded devil attacks Lang with his claws. Lang not having to worry about Z1 keeps him from getting hit this round.
Hit Lang AC's 20 & 21; damage 0.

The Vampire attacks Belkior with her SW Flail, after moving it to him. She then speaks something softly to the man standing next to her. He lifts one of his arms and a lightning bolt streaks out, hitting Belkior (listen DC 15 to hear her say "That little halfling is trying to kill your daughter. You should lightning bolt him"). With her Shield arm she reaches into a pouchbelt and withdraws a wand. She then taps herself with it (cure for 14).

Vampire hit AC's 14 (natural 1); damage 0.
Lightning Bolt Reflex DC 17; damage 24/12.

Both the Vampire Spawn sense something as Xenia moves into the area (spot 24 & 31 (natural 20); listen 18 & 19). VS2 takes a swipe through the area where Xenia is standing. The creature does not damage Xenia, but may have made contact with her (OOC - enough to hit her but could not get through invisibility concealment. Would he have made contact?). VS1 swings at Ashlan. The girl ignores everyone and moves up the stairs.

VS1 hit AC 15; 0 damage.

Angus sees the battle in the balance and the master vampire as the key. "Pour it on Shields! Kill the Vampire!"

Taking his own advice Angus looks for a gap in Lang's battle with the outsider(Arcane Knowledge 23) and spots the vampire. Angus unleashes four balls of force that slam into the vampire.

Angus can't take the suspense of when Syr will attack the vampire, but keeps quite, not wanting to reveal the monks presense. The melee should not bother the monk as he tumbles so well, Angus thinks to himself.

Lang smiles at Sunshine actions, all those long hours of training pay off. Then the undead thing stands and smacks him again.

Lang hears Angus's call to action, but he has pressing business first.

Huh? Where's that girl going? Xenia watches in confusion as the girl just walks in the door, right by her and up the stairs. It's not until she turns left at the top that a nasty idea begins to tickle part of her brain.

Next thing she knows she's got vampies swatting in her airspace. They know she's here!!!

"Hey, Ash! It's Xenia. We gotta finish this quick. You keep saying you're a good guy, well here's your chance to prove it. I'm gonna distract this one vampie in front of you. Maybe it'll do nothing. But maybe it'll give you just the edge you need to push this guy out into the sunlight."

"Got it?"

"Wynn, you hear that? Can you give a push too?"

Then she watches her arm become visible as she attacks the vampire with her light mace. Just enough to draw his attention and then sprint up the stairs.

"Girlie, where do you think you're going? You don't wanna go that way. They want you to blow yourself up. Don't go, I'm warning you. You take another step, I'm gonna have to hit you."

And Xenia keeps her mace ready in case the girl feels compelled to walk to her doom.

"I don't have to prove anything to you ... drow," Ashlan snarls in reply. But the opportunity is too tempting. Even in his shaken state, it's just too tempting.

"But, you're going down," once again he sneers at the vampire spawn. He pulls all his strength together and slams into the spawn.

Ashlan feels the move go all wrong. He feels himself falling back.

Jancassius, give me the power. Give me some of that burn and hate. You're going down! You're going outside! You're going doooww ... " ... aaaAAAHHH"

With a heroic burst of strength Ashland shoves the vampire spawn into the cleansing light of day.

Supplemental - This is to revise some actions in the above post due to Belkior's Magic Circle against Evil, which encompasses the Man next to the Vampire.

The Vampire attacks Belkior with her SW Flail, after moving it to him. She then speaks something softly to the man standing next to her (listen DC 15 to hear her say "That little halfling is trying to kill your daughter. You should lightning bolt him"). The man listens to the Vampire speak, but does not immediately react. A pained expression comes to his face as some internal struggle goes on in his head. In the end he does nothing, but look at the girl in front of him.

The Vampire looks at the man in anger and then turns her attention to Belkior. She casts a spell at Belkior and he feels a wave of magic envelop him.

Vampire hit AC's 14 (natural 1); damage 0.
Target Dispel Magic:
Bless (20 vs 18) -- spell is dispelled
Magic Circle against Evil (24 vs 19) -- spell is dispelled

The halfling cleric hisses when the vampire dispells his protective magics.

His spiritual warhammer swings and misses the vampire once more. Time to burn down this bloodsucker, Belkior thinks as he begins to invoke a prayer to Alemi.

He concentrates again, blocking out the distractions of the surrounding combat. He successfully casts his spell and sees through the shadows to hit the vampire once more with a ray of pure, holy light.

If there's any possible way for her to squeeze next to belkior and take a swing, Famina does so. However, there's no way she can attack the main vampire. So, she focuses on that zombie on the side of the room, figuring to work around the periphery.
(I can't tell if the map indicates that the area around D20 exists or if it's dark or whatever. But if it does exist, Famina will take a 5' step into D20, and attack the zombie next to her there. She swings twice, hitting, and her shield roars and imsses by quite a bit. 5 damage and 10 damage to it.)

Hearing the Vampire's words, he realizes he needs to get back there to either subdue the mage or engage the vampire. Grinding his teeth, he examines his options.

Frustrated that he isn't able to get past Lang so that he can attack the vampire, he lashes out against the nearest Zombie (Z1, attack 26,28,10 damage 7,7, oops 1 hit missed in the darkness). "Clear a hole big guy!"

Angus casts a magic missile at the Vampire for 15 damage.

Lang attacks the Bearded Devil, once again landing 3 out of 4 swings. Sunshine attacks Z1 and is able to get a hold of it for no damage, but the bite does allow the dog to trip the Zombie to the ground.

Belkior casts another Searing Light spell at the Vampire for 35 damage. A frown appears on her face.

Famina is stuck behind her comrades and cannot attack .

Syr, in cell E18, becomes visible after striking Z1 for 2 damage after DR..

OOC - there appears to be two closets in the room. On in the top right corner and one in the bottom right corner.

Xenia distracts VS1 and moves up the stairs after the girl. She draws 2 AoO's as she becomes visible and leaves the area.

Wynn charges down the hallway and bull rushes Ashlan and possibly VS1. He is unsuccessful in getting a grip on Ashlan and is unable to push him into the square with VS1 and the dead Ogre (roll +17, +2 charge, +0 Str & -4 non-prof. = 15 versus Ashlan +10 & +5 str = 15 ).

The girl moves down the hallway and into the darkness.

Zombie 1 attacks Lang from the ground at -4. It then rises, drawing AoO's from Lang, Sunshine & Syr. Zombie 3 attacks Belkior.

The Vampire attacks Belkior with her SW Flail. Once again she speaks to the man standing next to her, this time loud enough for everyone to hear. "Protect your daughter from these invaders that want to kill us." He lifts one of his arms and magic missiles shoot out of his finger tips hitting Belkior, Lang and Famina. The Vampire then casts a spell, but there isn't any visible result. She then starts to climb the wall (she is now in the same square, but 15' up the wall near the ceiling).

Lang continues to bleed from the Devils first blow.

Lang jumps to avoid the zombies slash and thrusts at the zombie as it rises.

Lang keeps his concentration on the Devil that seems to be bleeding as badly as he is. Lang redoubles his efforts on the outsider.

DM - Yes, the girl moved west. I forgot to update her new spot. The VS floated up the 2 story entranceway and are on the second level, right beside the door that leads to the balcony over the front doors of the house. If they were not gaseous then Xenia probably would have seen them.

The halfling cleric watches the vampire scale the wall. Belkior hopes that his companions can deal some damage to her soon because he no longer has any effective spells to attack from a distance.

"Running away, bloodsucker? Afraid to come down here and fight?"

Belkior re-directs his spiritual warhammer to attack the summoned devil. The spell strikes true, driving the devil back to whence it came.
Spiritual Weapon hits AC 27, 73% miss chance, 7 damage (no DR since it's a spell)

Then Belkior reaches out and channels healing magic into Lang, hoping to seal the wounds from the evil glaive. The healing energy flows into the bugbear and his wounds close. Belkior's Pearl of Power flares briefly when he casts the spell.

Lang attacks the Bearded Devil, hitting twice for 8 damage total. Sunshine is able to damage (3) and trip the zombie Z1 this round.

Angus tries to hit the Vampire as it climbs along the wall, but shadows throw off his aim and he misses badly.

Belkior re-directs his Spiritual Weapon to a softer target and is rewarded when the magical weapon strikes the devil. His strike proves fatal as the devil and his glaive blink out and go back to hell. Belkior then cures Lang for 13 points. There was some resistance in Lang's body to being cured, but Belkior's healing skill was able break through the barrier. Belkior doesn't have much time to determine much about the condition of the girls and the man. The man is obviously under the control of the Vampire. The girls are cowering as far away as they can from the undead as well as the Shields.

Famina squeezes past Angus and Ashlan back into the hallway.

Syr attacks zombie Z1. His swings all look like they will hit the zombie, but 2 of them fall short due to the shadows. The one hit is enough though to crumple the creature and send it back to the world of the dead.

Xenia follows the girl into the darkness end of the building. She finds her cowering in a corner. For good measure, Xenia backhands her with her mace. The girl slumps to the floor unconscious.

Ashlan runs back towards the Vampire's lair. He ends his run behind Angus, in cell H18.

Wynn runs after Xenia and the girl. He makes it up the stairs and does not immediately see anyone. He looks around for Xenia as he just heard her scream something about the Vampire Spawn and the girl. He doesn't see Xenia or the girl, but across the open area he does see the 2 VS. They are standing in front of the door leading outside to the front balcony. They also appear to be solidifying.

Start CR #24:

Zombie 3 attacks Belkior and is able to nick the healer (Z3 hits AC 22; 3 damage).

The Vampire attacks Belkior with her SW Flail. Each swing comes dangerously close to smacking Belkior, but the shadows provide some relative safety.

Vampire hit AC's 27 & 23; 0 damage (miss chances 19 & 5).

The Vampire stops climbing and remains about 15' up the wall. She is at the point where the wall and ceiling meet. She looks down upon the group and starts to cast a spell. Belkior feels something touch him and a wave of negative energy courses through his body.

(Bad day for posting ofr me.. too much to do! heheh!)
"If I have my guess right... they're headed to the basement! That's where they'd obviously put the coffin. So...we need to go there once we've finished them off."
But, still in the back, with others in the way, she can't do much.. Still, if others are kind enough to move out of the way, she will move back down the hall, looking in rooms for the stairways going down.
