The Second Bout Ends in Victory!

That Sinking Feeling (DM Cayzle)
Saturday April 22nd, 2006 10:54:07 AM

Sarigar moves five feet to make room for his brother wolf. Then he attacks the Sage. Inside his protective cage of iron (woven in the shape of leaves and vines), the Sage is AC25. Tratain has already inflicted 33 hp damage. Sarigar now adds to that -- he hits thrice for 24 more. Black Paws adds insult to that injury with a critical bite for 20 more! That's 77 total damage! The Sage reels!

Arien moves up 30 feet in order to get a line of effect around Feng's forcecage. Then he hits the Sage with 16 points of magic missile damage. That's 93 points total so far!

Draax makes a double move past the wild brothers, drawing his bow.

Monthor, Feng, and Renik remain encased in planes of force.

Then Tratain casts his Power Word Blind spell, and the Sage is now not only near death, but completely sightless! How will he survive another round?

The Sages intuits that a strategic withdrawal is required. He casts a spell and sinks into the stone floor, out of sight and range of attack.

Is the Sage gone? Or is he lurking a few feet under the stone? Has he escaped for good or will he return?

This is clearly the Sage's inner sanctum. The northern hall is a luxurious residence, finely appointed. The eastern hall is a lab; the western, a library -- these facilities, even at a glance, far far surpass the crude-by-comparison rooms you saw before. The quality of the goods and equipment is stunning even at a glance.

Renik notes that the pupant is running off out of the cavern.

And the Map! The spot where the sage sank into the stone is marked with an X.

Renik
Saturday April 22nd, 2006 11:40:05 AM

Renik continues his slow breathing, a remote part of his brain pleased at the speed with which the feelings of tension and frustration have ebbed from him. He tries to empty his mind of all conscious thought, entering a near-trancelike state.

This state of grace achieved he draws both blades from the sheaths on his back in one smooth, fluid movement. Eyes closed he begins a slow, measured twin weapon form, beautiful in its graceful precision. He uses every inch of his confined cell, stretching and flexing his muscles, loosening and preparing his body in the same way as he has his mind.

"AAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!! Sarigar bellows as he jump up on the Sage's cage and begins pulling drastically at the bars frothy spittle flying from his mouth randomly. The leaf and vine design of the bars digs into his hands and his blood drips onto the floor. He takes one hand off the bar and punches it...hard and it's obvious that he damaged the hand as a couple fingers are twisted and bulging in unnatural ways. However, Sarigar seems oblivious to this as he continues pulling and pounding on the cage, desperate to get inside.

Black Paws, on the other hand begins sniffing at the ground in an attempt to find where the Sage may have gone or where he might pop up. Unfamiliar with how spells work, it only makes sense to him that the Sage is likely tunneling like a badger, which although difficult to follow while it's burrowing, is not impossible.

No Sign of Sage (DM Cayzle)
Monday April 24th, 2006 7:42:54 AM

The Sage seems to have vanished! Tratain's spell fails to bring him forth, but Draax does note that the Ring Gates are working again. Tratain must have dispelled whatever it was that was cancelling dimensional effects.

Arien analyzes the magic and deduces that the Sage melded with the stone. Per that spell, he must still be down there -- unless he then used or is about to use other magic to escape.

Sarigar does some damage to the cage, and hurts himself a little in the process. The cage has Hardness 10. There is a gate in but it is arcane locked. (Sarigar, take a point of damage for every 20 you inflict, if you like.)

Black Paws can smell that the Sage had been in the library wing of the inner sanctum before entering the cage. The wizard/druid did not leave the cage, and seems to have sunk into stone with no trace.

Draax readies a shot in case the villain pops out, but he waits in vain.

Feng, Monthor, and Renik remain entrapped.

In fact, the Sage does not reappear. How long do you wait? What do you do when he does not return in a round? In a minute?

==========

Friends, I have an announcement. JK will be taking over the game as DM after this module ends, in the next 2-3 weeks or so. I'll be moving to the Crescent Valley game, with our own Philip as co-DM. It has been a real pleasure shepherding you all through fire and foe. My only regret is that I never managed to kill off anyone (Monthor does not count because he sacrificed himself!). Well, I still have a couple weeks to try -- and your dear friend the Sage is not dead yet! :-)

Sarigar has ceompletely lost it at this point. He punches, kicks and jumps on the cage trying to pound his way in. He makes little progress, other than hurting himself, but it's as if he doesn't feel anything at this point.

Black Paws follows the scent trail into the library to wherever the Sage seems to have spent the most time. Even his beastial intelligence can recognize that this seems to be the Sage's den and he'll likely return to this place and he'll be waiting.

In his force cage Renik continues his weapon form, his twin blades tapping gently against each of the six walls of his prison. The taps come slowly at first, as he moves slowly and precisely through the routine.

But as he continues the taps begin to come faster, the form begins to flow more quickly. Bending, twisting, flipping and ducking the rogues moves grow ever more complex, ever faster.

Arien uses his teleport spell to free Tratain -- it is lucky that Tratain's dispel took down the anti-dimension effect, or Tratain might have been stuck.

Tratain and Sarigar make short work of the cage and the floor under it. The sage is not there.

Draax and Black Paws go through the Sage's library. It is clear from scent and sight that he had been studying his spell book when the party's entry forced a response before he had prepped all his desired spells.

The place is starting to be quite trashed.

A minute has gone by since the Sage sunk into the floor.

At his suggestion of searching for the Sage outside, the brothers waste no time and dash out of the room, passing through the chamber in which Monthor and Renik are still trapped.

Just as they are about to leave the chamber, they both pick up the scent of the pupant, pausing only momentarily as they realize their new friend wasn't still with them. They then go off in search of the pupant, which they both believe will lead to the Sage.

The Enemy Masses (DM Cayzle)
Wednesday April 26th, 2006 8:05:52 AM

The party's efforts reveal nothing of interest -- except for Sarigar!

He finds the pupant trail, then, in the room of rubble where the ceiling fell, he finds a scent of the Sage as if coming from nowhere. Back more to the room that had had the mist (it does so no more), he sees the enemy!

There are a number of bees and the pupant and the sage! The sage is casting spells. The pupant sees him and barks in welcome. The Wild brothers run back fast, followed by the pupant. The bees do not stop the pupant, and the Sage is too busy casting to do so.

Back at the room where Renik and Monthor are held, Sarigar relates this news.

15 rounds have gone by since the Sage sunk into the earth. He looked to Sarigar, by the way, all healed up.

Sprinting back into the room with Monthor and Renik's cages, the brothers stop just inside the room. Frustration is plainly visible on his face. It's obvious that he wanted nothing more than to finihs off the Sage. Even to Sarigar's limited tactical skills, 2 against an entire pack is likely to lead to the two's demise.

With a still hoarse voice, he shouts out to the others..."He's back the other way. He's all better and he's making magic. He's got a pack of bees with him too. Time for the runt to die!"

He waits long enough for the uncaged Hamleteers to approach him before the brothers turn and take off after the sage. They hold back on their speed enough that the slowest Hamleteer can keep up.

There is also an ant hiding around a corner.

The bees are AC14, the sage is AC26.

Sarigar and Black Paws are in the lead headed through the open door toward the Sage. Tratain casts spiritual weapon, which hits the Sage for 8 hp damage.

Hamleteers

Tratain casts his dispel, and the Sage looks annoyed when the mirror images he just called up poof away. One other spell is also dispelled, and the Sage's AC is now 22.

The spiritual weapon hits again, for 5 hp, 13 total so far.

Draax shoots at the bee on the right, inflicting 25 hp damage.

Arien casts his ice storm, inflicting 17 points of damage to the bees and sage. The sage is now down 30.

Sarigar and Black Paws attack two bees. The space available pretty much requires Sarigar to go right, BP, left. The charging brothers are effective, hitting twice. Two bees are now down, one 42, the other, 51. Both are quite wounded.

Feng, Monthor, and Renik, confined, do their best to endure their captivities.

Enemies

The two wounded bees attack the brothers. Each hits! Sarigar is stung for 5, BP for 10. Both must save (Fort DC15 for 3 pts Con damage (Sarigar) or 1 (BP).

As the bees attack, their stingers rip out of their bodies -- which looks very painful and damaging. Usually, this kills a bee, and in fact these bees take 8 and 13 hp damage each. That's 50 hp damage to one and 64 hp damage to another. The one with 50 damage is still alive, but with no weapon. It still takes up space. The one with 64 damage is down for the count.

BUT! Both are regenerating! At the end of this round, damage will be 49 and 63.

Still, the one in front of Sarigar is down. The one in front of BP cannot attack (name in white letters on the map.)

The next bee steps up to fill the gap, and attacks Sarigar. That one hits AC18, missing.

Now it is the Sage's turn!

He casts Empowered Scorching Ray on Black Paws. The wounded bee in front of the canine offers soft cover and a +4 AC bonus; if the sage misses by up to 4, a ray may hit the bee.

The rays hit AC27, 26, and 28. Those are three rays that hit BP. The beast takes 67 hp damage (45 +22 empowered).

The sage follows that up with a quickened scorching ray on BP. That hits AC24, 18, and 19 for 14, 12, and 13 damage. [OOC: Philip, what is BP's AC vs ranged touch? Please apply howsoever much damage is correct. Let me know if any miss by 1 to 4 since those will hit the bee.]

Both brothers take the stings in stride, though painful, it's not enough damage to stop them from their mutual frenzy.

However, with Black Paws being an easy target to touch attacks (only 12 AC, most of his AC is Natural and Bracers), the scorching rays hit with devestating effect. The first alone singes nearly all the hair off Black Paws large frame. Shockingly, Sarigar himself blisters and a great amount of his visible skin chars or flakes away. Both borhters yelp out in tremendous pain.

The second set, however, ends those screams as they both succumb to death's embrace. They crumple over, little more than charred husks of their former selves.

Seeing the situation ahead Arien casts Fly upon himself and then moves down the hallway, staying behind Tratain.

Oblivious to the events in the next room Renik's blades tap faster than ever, the rhythm tapped out sounding like some sort of coded message.

The Wild Brothers are scorched to death! "Ha ha!" laughs the Sage. "That will teach you!"

But it seems the Sage has some learning of his own to do. He takes 26 dam from Tratain's Spiritual Weapon, and another 55 from Draax's arrows! He's down a total of 111 and looks real bad!

Tratain advances, and Arien flies up after him.

Tratain is at 22-23-Y-Z. Arien is at 24Y. Draax is at 35Z.

The Sage scowls in rage and terror. He gestures at Tratain bearing down on him. He points at the enlarged protector and a ray shoots out -- a Disintegrate ray!

The ray hits Touch AC 22 Is that a hit?

If so, Tratain, please make a Fort Save vs. DC 22 or take 136 hp damage. If you make the save, take 19.

Then the sage moves 30 feet west to S15. The bee with a stinger follows to T-U-15-16. The bee with no stinger moves to V-W-15-16. Those are withdraw actions, so no AoO.

No map til later today or eve.

Sarigar and Black Paws
Monday May 1st, 2006 12:04:37 PM

The bodies of the brothers have fallen in such a way that they almost seem to be trying to protect each other. A last effort to show the deep brotherly love they had for each other.

The smell of the charred flesh and burnt hair is nearly overwhelming as you can hear their skin still sizzling.

Trapped in his force cage the rogue continues his weapon form, attempting to block out everything from the outside world, focusing instead only on his own movements.

But despite his fervent attempts to maintain a state of mental tranquility and balance, he begins to feel a sense of mounting dread creeping over him. His blades flash back and forth as he dives and sumeraults, backflipping from the walls in an eloquent dance of death. But the effortless ease that characterised the earlier form has gone. His face is contorted now by his exertions, his breath ragged. His movements have lost their graceful fluidity, and are now savage and harsh. Sweat flies from him as he pushes himself ever harder, ever faster. He feels the muscles of his body burn even as a dark fire rises in his soul.

The Green Ray does hit Tratain but he is able to shrug off most of the damage. (Fort Save 23, Tratain is also Medium Sized again.)

The Spiritual Weapon Keeps attacking the Sage. (Two Hits for 12 and 9 Damage)

Tratain then Steps Foreward to Square W18 and Throws His Warhammer at the Sage.
(Attack Roll 15+11(BaB) +1(Dex) +1(Focus) +1(Magic) +1(Bless) = 30 - 4(Improvised Range Weapon) = 26 - 2(Range Increment) = 24 For 6 Physical and 8 Holy Damage (I think Thats Right Cayzle but check me, its alot to factor in)

Arien flies into the room and moves to where he has a clear shot at the sage and no risk to Tratain (X17 works I believe) with one of his last few remaining spells, Cone of Cold. The cone spreads out from Arien dealing 46 cold damage to everything in its path (Ref Save DC 22 for half)

Victory at Last! (DM Cayzle)  d20+1=8 d20+1=16 (bees fail saves) d20+8=9 (sage fails too)

Tratain's attacks stagger the Sage, and the Cone seals the deal, taking him by surprise and freezing him to the core. It also has the happy side effect of killing the two already-wounded bees as well. It strikes the champions as a kind of ironic justice that he who killed brave Sarigar with fire should meet his end in cold.

You find on the Sage's frozen form:
headband
amulet
pearl
two rings
ioun stone
14 similar small vials
vestments
a bead
two wands

You had also found earlier in a puddle on the floor:
two wands
two small tubs of ointment
two rods

A thorough search of the inner sanctum brings your total gold count to 10,000 gp. You note that the books, furnishings, and other goods do seem valuable.

You are gathered in the room where Monthor and Renik wait. You have brought the poor remains of Sarigar and Black Paws with you. You have not yet left the underground complex. It is about an hour after the Sage died.
