Kadaz
Thursday April 6th, 2006 7:51:18 AM

At the apartment Kadaz starts to plan. "Rushing in and taking them by surprise is good. But we should make sure that we have blocked any back door. If they have another way out we may lose them."

Shadow  d20+5=25 d20+2=5
Thursday April 6th, 2006 1:33:33 PM

"Wait, I will go down and check it out. If you would not mind backing me up." If he gets the go ahead he will head down to see if there is any evidence that the thieves are present. (spot=25, nat. 20, Listen=5)

Mira
Thursday April 6th, 2006 10:15:43 PM

"Just a minute, Shadow!" Mira whispers. Letting go of Arm, she digs in her spell component pouch. Plucking at her lashes, she looses a dark hair. Working quickly, she molds a bit of gum arabic around the lash. A word of magic and some graceful waves of her hand and both the components, and the elf vanish!

Invisibility cast on Shadow.

"Got yer back!" grunts the fighter, as he presses his back against the building and covers the party's rear. "Mind ye watcher' step!" he adds remembering the slippery floor of the apartment.

Once More, Into the Breach (DM JohnP)
Thursday April 6th, 2006 10:42:02 PM

The party mills around outside the tenement, debating the best method for entering. Consensus from Arm and Kadaz seems to favour a direct approach. Shadow, well, he favours a quieter approach.

After listening to the debate, Mira casts Invisibility on Shadow so that he can slip in and out unobserved.

Conner moves to block the doorway in case anyone comes in after them.

Shadow steps into the hallway and moves carefully down to the thieves' apartment. The floor is still slippery but he has enough time to make his way their carefully. The apartment door stands open.

Slipping closer, Shadow peers inside and sees ... nothing. Not a thing remains in the apartment. He signals back to Conner and then enters the apartment. Checking the main part and the two sleeping areas, Shadow is unable to find any sign of the former occupants. Except for some dirty cooking utensils left in the cooking area.

Either the thieves very carefully cleared out after the party was last here, or their neighbours helped themselves. Considering the condition of the building, that is possible. The rogue notices rather more muddy footprints in the room than he expected.

Meanwhile, outside the building, Conner keeps his eyes peeled for anyone acting strangely. Despite their efforts, he notices two figures standing in a nearby alley watching the party as they investigate the tenement. From where he stands, Conner doesn't think that the pair belong to the Guards or any other official group.

DM Announcement (JohnP)
Thursday April 6th, 2006 10:42:46 PM

You guessed it, that's my clumsy introduction of the two new players.

Welcome to both Ken and Jeff!

Arm  d20+4=24
Friday April 7th, 2006 5:51:50 AM

Arm notices the pair as well (spot=24-nat. 20), and drawing his sword, steps in front of Mira to guard her and calls out to the pair, "You there! Friend or foe, advance and be recognized! Stop acting like rats in a sewer and explain yourselves.".

Kadaz  d20+1=11
Friday April 7th, 2006 7:01:56 AM

Kadaz looks closely at the two watchers but can't tell much about them. It's hard to believe oinly two onlookers would pose a threat to the group but you never know. He stands beside Arm and waits. (spot 11)

Mira  d20+2=9 d20+2=13
Friday April 7th, 2006 1:09:46 PM

"Good grief, Arm!" exclaims the green-eyed sorcerer, "I can take care of myself!" Mira tries to study the strangers (Sense Motive=9) but finds her examination hindered by a buildup of grime on her glasses. Taking off her spectacles, she polishes the lenses with the edge of her sleeve, before replacing them on her nose.

Mira brushes at a stray hair that has managed to loose itself from the tight plait of dark brown hair that hangs just past her shoulders. Her long dark cloak is thrown back, revealing a rather poor and plain looking outfit of tunic over leggings and soft boots. A remarkable belt is worn 'round her waist. It is wide and laced at the sides and front, where it comes to a point under her bust. It has been lovingly tooled with a design of interlaced dragons all around. Three pouches dangle from the sorcerer's belt and a scroll case is slung over one shoulder.

Mira waits expectantly for the strangers to answer the half-elf bard.

Ash (DM JohnP - on behalf of Jeff C)
Friday April 7th, 2006 2:18:57 PM

Ash looks quizically at the sword his fellow half elf has drawn and pointed at him. The wolf at his side growls menacingly at those who threaten Ash. However, Ash makes an almost imperceptible hand motion and the wolf backs away, her hackles still raised and waching the strangers with caution.

"Am I so threatening a presence that you must draw a weapon on me?", he asks, "or have I done you harm in a previous existence?". Ash continues, gesturing to his presence and the barbarish leathers and hides that he wears, "I am sure you would not make the mistake as to judge me by the mere superficiality of the wardrobe I do wear?".

Ash raises his staff and holding it across his shoulders, behind his neck, with both arms lying over it, introduces himself. "I am Ash"

Shadow
Friday April 7th, 2006 3:21:26 PM

Shadow checks out the apartment to make sure there is no sign of the thieves, but when he hears Arm call out, he will rush out to see what is happening outside.

Thar ail Baerer
Friday April 7th, 2006 3:46:31 PM

During the barbarian's conversation, the second figure has stayed silent and unmoving. After the conversation is over, the silent steps forward and the group notices that he is wearing a hooded cloak, and a camoflage colored outfit and sturdy boots, similar to what a ranger or woodsman would wear.

He looks towards the group and his gaze stops at Arm. After gazing at Arm for a moment, he lowers his hood and the group notices that he is an elf and oddly enough, is also wearing a cross around his neck, representing some unknown diety to them. He wears two short swords on belt and has a short bow attached to his backpack.

Keeping his hands clear of his weapons, but near enough if needed, he says in an even tone "Hello, my name is Thar ail Baerer, but you can call me Thar. I mean you no harm and it is refreshing to see one with similar blood [pointing towards Arm] traveling with you. I am tracking down rumors related to the death of one of our race, who happened to be a local priest."

Kadaz
Friday April 7th, 2006 5:26:17 PM

Kadaz looks over the newcomers in total amazement. "Looks like you two made a wrong turn at the city gates. Not much in the way of forests around here. And the guards let a wolf in?"

Kadaz, a little dwarf with a big axe, is cautious but not obviously on guard. Birdie, on the other hand, has a very different reaction. The little dog just stares at the big wolf and tries to hide behind Kadaz, fur, tail and ears very flat.

Mira (illegal 2nd post)
Friday April 7th, 2006 11:37:18 PM

Mira takes a step towards Arm so that the front of her body is nearly touching that of the bard. She places a hand on his sword arm, and applies a gentle pressure, hoping he will drop his arm and point the weapon towards the cobbles of the street.

Echoing the dwarf's sentiment, Mira will explain, "the city is in turmoil. One who comes from nature...who perhaps may have been the very incarnation of nature...awoke in response to the singing of the elves of the Wold. The affect was disastrous for the city. There was flooding. All manner of plant life grew to astronomical proportions at incredible rates destroying the infrastructure of the city. Wild animals," Mira points to the wolf next to the ranger-type, "like that one, attacked the people. Many city folk have died."

The sorcer takes a break, and catches her companions' eyes. "The non-elven of the city are blaming those with pointy ears for their woe. The city guards are working to restore order, but there are vigilante groups with mixed motives, and the population is becoming polarized."

The green-eyed woman toys nervously with the silver and green pendant at her neck, "it is dangerous in the city, and yet it is our home." Noticing the unusual symbol 'round the elf's neck, Mira's eyes narrow slightly as she asks the smaller of the two, "you wouldn't have orders...I mean work with divine magics, would you?" Her eyes open wide and look even bigger behind her glasses. Mira turns her head and whispers in Arm's ear Highlight to display spoiler: {a HEALER!}

Ash (2nd Illegal Post by DM JohnP - on behalf of Jeff C)
Friday April 7th, 2006 11:42:18 PM

Ash sighs...."my master told me much about "civilization" and "civilized" persons." Ash says "civilized like it was a bad word. "I see he was being kind. Look at what it has done to that poor lord of the wild? "

Looking at Kadaz, Ash laughs, "As for your guards, are you brave enough to tell her where she could go?...I know I'm not...nor were your city's guards." The wolf looks up at Ash, as if she knew he was talking about her, her tail wags a bit, then she turns back towards the strangers.

Conner
Saturday April 8th, 2006 7:58:44 AM

The fighter stays his ground, arms crossed, one hand resting on the pommel of his longsword. The fighter is neither ready to accept or deny the two woods folk.

Thar
Saturday April 8th, 2006 2:02:18 PM

Looking at the lady who calls herself Mira, Thar answers her question "Yes, I am both a healer and what you humans would call a ranger. If your group follows a path of goodness, I would be willing to heal anyone that needs it, as a gesture of good faith."

In response to the dwarf, he comments "Sadly, I am away from the woods that I hold dear. I don't enjoy crowded human cities any more than many do, but I have committed myself to a higher purpose and I have been asked to help investigate the death of a brother priest."

"I hope that you won't blame me for what happened in the past here, as many do towards our race. I am new to this area and wish to cause no trouble, but I will stand for what is right."

Smiling at the wolf, he pets it on the head and rubs it behind it's ears. "This is a magnificent creature and I am glad to call it a companion." (OOC - I'm assuming Ash and I at least know each other and the wolf and I have been acquainted before.)

New Companions (DM JohnP)
Sunday April 9th, 2006 4:17:30 PM

Shadow quietly examines the former home of Geordie and the other two thieves. Like his first impression, they appear to have done a good job of eliminating any trace of their presence.

The half-elven thief looks up when he hears Arm call out. But he is otherwise ignorant of what is transpiring outside.

Arm was the first to notice the two people watching them, and he challenged them to explain their presence. The other members of the party had different responses. Kadaz and Conner are wary but Mira bristled at Arm's efforts to protect her.

The rougher of the two figures is the first to respond to Arm's challenge. He introduces himself as Ash and wonders why the party might feel threatened by their presence, especially since he is a half-elf like two of the party. Of course, the party is more concerned with the wolf at Ash's side ... they all remember what happened when the Fey King awakened.

The other figure steps forward. While also appearing rustic, he is more polished than Ash. He introduces himself as Thar and explains that he and Ash were investigating the death of an elven high priest. They had been following a rumor concerning the two assassins and came to the apartments.

Kadaz and the others aren't too certain of these fellows. It's obvious that neither of them were in the City when the Fey King woke. And it seems that the pair are unaware or unconcerned about the current troubles in the City. But at least they seem to have common motives.

After some discussion, Thar offers to channel healing magics as a gesture of good faith. At the moment, none of the party are needing any healing however. When he moves to pet the wolf beside Ash, it sidles away but doesn't do any more than that.

Partway through this conversation, Shadow returns and quietly describes what he found to his companions.

Everyone stands around looking at one another. Should they combine forces to find the murderers of Tredegar? That would make sense, at least in the short term.

Together, they have determined that the two thieves are no longer in their apartment. And, from what all of them have seen, it wouldn't be wise for the two to remain anywhere near the Temple of Flower.

They could return to the Guard post and question Geordie, of course. That assumes that the Guard would allow them to interrogate the thief. Or, they could go now to investigate other potential hiding places.

Shadow
Sunday April 9th, 2006 10:13:45 PM

As Shadow climbs up the steps, he notices the group talking to the two strangers. He quietly listens to what is going on, and then he introduces himself, "I am called Shadow, and as my name implies, I perfer the shadows. I do however follow the path of goodness." Shadow adds at last when he looks at the one that calls himself Thar.

Mira
Monday April 10th, 2006 1:12:00 AM

The sorcerer elbows Arm, then goes on tip-toes to whisper in his ear. "We need a healer," she says, and then as an afterthought, "and they look like they need friends who know their way around the city."

Stepping out from behind the bard, Mira makes an invitation. "We haven't found what we were hoping to find, and now the day is getting on, and it's time to get something to eat. The Flying Fish is just around the corner, or we could head to Sampson's. We could get something to eat, and share what we know about what happened."

Mira hopes there are no objections from her companions.

Arm
Monday April 10th, 2006 6:03:23 AM

Arm stares warily at the two newcomers, especially the one with the wolf. Revelling in the closeness of Mira, he lowers but does not sheathe his sword. Turning his head slighty he says quietly to Mira, "Please don't be offended my dear. You are a VERY important member of this party, especially to me, and I would rather be ripped limb from limb than to stand by and allow any harm to come to you. I agree that we need a healer, especially in these times, and I don't feel that these two mean us any harm. Someone of elvish blood would not be a member of one of the militia groups. Also, I don't think he'd stand idly by while Tredegar was murdered, so I don't think they are in league with Geordie's men, either.".

Pausing for a moment, he continues, "If the two we seek are anywhere, they're probably at the Lady's mansion. However, we'll have a far more difficult time gaining entry now. If these two would like to join us, then we may have a chance, but we'll without doubt have to fight our way in. Whatever you wish to do is fine with me.". As he says this, he smiles warmly at Mira, once again taking in her beauty.

Thar ail Baerer (Ken Mestemacher)
Monday April 10th, 2006 10:25:05 AM

Looking at the group, he smiles when he realizes that the group appears to one who shares his interest in doing good. He notices the comments that the large man makes towards the pretty lady and thinks that it's nice to see couples who could potentially be in love. Also, he smiles inwardly as he thinks to himself 'Well, I've never performed a wedding yet, but there is always a first time.'

After looking at the group, Thar comments, "Yes, I'd like to join you and your group in these investigations. I don't know my way around this city and to be honest, don't feel comfortable in large cities, especially ones with all of the racial unrest. I am hungry, so if there is somewhere nice to eat, count me in."

"Lastly, if anyone doesn't mind, I'm going to wear my cloak and hood, in order to cover my head and ears."

Test post from Jeff Childs' account [by Kim]
Monday April 10th, 2006 3:19:25 PM

This is a test.

Ash
Monday April 10th, 2006 3:20:53 PM

Ash remains confused. Since being sent to this city, he has met this elf and now these other strangers. Moreover, these most recent strangers threatened him with a sword. Nevertheless, they all seem to be interested in the death of the priest...which is good. Joining them at this eating place might not be a bad idea.

After considering his options, Ash agrees, saying "I would be pleased to join you for a repast at either of these eating places you refer to. However, please refrain from pointing swords at me in the future. It makes Shelya upset."

Kadaz  d20=10
Monday April 10th, 2006 7:49:14 PM

Kadaz looks at the two newcomers and adds his opinion. "Yes, let's adjorn to a meal. I'm very interested in hearing about how Ash and Thar ended up here. And we can exchange information on the killers we all seek. "

As Kadaz talks Birdie decides to make nice with the very very big dog over there. He scoots forward, slowly, making lots of 'I'm friendly' doggie signs. (diplomacy? 10)

Breaking Bread (DM JohnP)
Monday April 10th, 2006 9:21:30 PM

The party is somewhat suspicious of these newcomers, wondering how they came to arrive here at the apartment of the suspected murderers.

Shadow is possibly the least suspicious, maybe because both Ash and Thar have elven blood. That means, at least, that they aren't members of the Defense League.

Before stepping out to speak to the newcomers, Mira whispers to Arm that they might need the newcomers. She offers to share a meal with them as a method of getting to know each other and sharing information.

The offer to share food interests both Thar and Ash, and Kadaz endorses the idea also. Both the newcomers accept the offer.

However, there is the matter of the drawn sword that Ash and his companion, Shelya, don't like. While Arm acknowledges Mira's statement that the strangers probably mean no harm he doesn't sheathe his sword, simply lowering it instead. Maybe it's because Arm is thinking about something else.

All the while, Birdie is trying to make nice with the newcomers companion. The wolf ignores the dog's motions and whines, staring instead at Arm and his bared blade.

While everyone is waiting for Arm to sheathe his sword, Conner's stomach starts rumbling. He's thinking about what they might be able to get as a late lunch at Sampson's. And the smells from the kitchen of the Flying Fish are appetizing, too.

Unless they choose to leave Arm behind, no one will be walking anywhere. Conditions in Plateau City haven't deteriorated so much that people walk around with bared blades.

Mira  d20+2(wisdom)=12
Monday April 10th, 2006 10:52:50 PM

"Armathen Ebano!" says Mira with a stern tone, "will you put that sword away!"

Sniffing the air, Mira tries to figure out what's cooking at the Flying Fish. (??=12) "Shall we check out the tavern over there? Maybe someone there knows something of the men who used to live in this place?"

The woman takes a step towards the tavern, then turns to the half-elf bard, and in gentler tones says, "you coming, Arm?"

Conner
Monday April 10th, 2006 11:37:50 PM

Conner rubs his mouth and chin to cover the grin.

The tatooed fighter had seen how Mira had led the ranger, Evan, around by the nose, and now it looked like the bard might fall prey to the same fate.

His stomach rumbles again, and he weighs his purse. A ploughman's lunch, and a pint would be just the thing.

Arm
Tuesday April 11th, 2006 5:56:06 AM

Arm grins sheepishly at Mira and says to her, "Of course, my dear.". Sheathing his sword, he says to the two newcomers, "I hope you'll forgive my conduct, but things have not gone well in the City for quite some time. One must constantly be aware of one's surroundings, ESPECIALLY when people lurk in alleys to observe others. When I first saw the two of you, I was not aware that you were of elven blood, as I myself have had to hide my heritage recently, much to my dismay. The two that we seek may be part of a larger group, and we know for a fact that they have ties to a certain 'high-class' person in the city, but let us retire to the inn where we can discuss this further. Again, I hope you'll forgive my brashness.".

After donning his hat once again he turns to Mira, and puts his arm around her shoulders, giving an affectionate squeeze and hoping that she is not overly upset with him, "Perhaps you can help me later with my new disguise kit that I've recently purchased?".

Ash
Tuesday April 11th, 2006 7:25:31 AM

Ash shrugs, amused by the politics of everyday life. He notes that even the swordsman's apology was directed more at the female than at him. He brings his staff down and follows the group to the eating place.

Shadow
Tuesday April 11th, 2006 10:17:30 AM

Shadow will follow the group still trying to see if there is any sign of the two thieves, but he is sure that they have gone to ground in probably the lady's house. His own stomach growls as he smells the food coming from the tavern. He also tries to get a better view of the two men that they are working with (actually take a look at their equipment, clothes, etc.)

Thar ail Baerer
Tuesday April 11th, 2006 10:25:54 AM

Wondering how long it will take these new strangers to convince their friend to resheath his sword, Thar thinks to himself 'I'm hungry and that fish smells good.'

He will join the group and head towards the tavern.

While he is doing that, he will join the figure that calls himself "Shadow" and ask him a few questions. "What sort of things should I be watching out for in this city? As I said, I'm at home in the wilds, but these big cities are new to me. Also, what's the situation with that big man and why he felt the need to keep his sword unsheathed for so long? Have you had some bad experiences here?"

Kadaz
Tuesday April 11th, 2006 5:46:07 PM

Kadaz decides to answer Thar. "When the Fae King came Plateau City was invaded by giant wolves and plants. Many residents dies fighting in the streets, or were struck down while running away. We are still on edge about anything unusual. We are rebuilding and may be for years. So, yes, we did have some bad experiences."

"As for what to watch out for, be wary of evil men, dark alleys, quick-talking con artists promising much for little, and all bureaucrats."

With these words of wisdom passed along, Kadaz looks ahead - food would be most welcome.

Actually Breaking Bread (DM JohnP)
Tuesday April 11th, 2006 10:47:18 PM

Mira scolds Arm about his manners while Conner grins at the treatment that the bard is receiving. Arm hurriedly sheathes his sword and speaks to the two newcomers. His companions nod when he describes why they are nervous, especially the connections between the men that they seek and the cult.

After that is finished, Ash and the others start walking towards the Flying Fish tavern. While they round the southern corner of the tavern, Shadow and Kadaz explain some of the intricacies of Plateau City to Thar and the other newcomer.

The front doors of the tavern stand open, a boy outside sweeping the street. He looks up when the group approaches but pales when he sees the wolf accompanying Ash. He grips his broom tightly as the party nears. He says something to the party with a weak voice and only those with sharp ears can catch it.

"No animals inside, sirs. And lady.

The party looks back and forth at each other and agrees that they won't attempt to ignore the house rules. Maybe Sampson would forgive them, but they don't know much about this place. Looking about, they see some benches and upturned barrels at the front of the tavern. It's a nice day so they decide to remain outside.

The boy takes their orders and runs back and forth to the bar and kitchen. This late, there isn't much of the hot lunch available but they can all get bread, cheese and a pint.

Mira and Arm try to ask questions of the boy but he won't stop to talk.

The party continues their education of the newcomers, pausing when the boy is nearby. After eating, Ash and Thar have heard how the party was "hired" by Fendrik Vaeder, the leader of the Defense League, to recover a necklace that belonged to his dead wife. And that the Defense League are the leaders of the anti-elf actions in the City.

They get the details about the leader and his helper, or assistant, Davern Barber. And the party's suspicions about this man.

Shadow tells about how he followed a member of the Defense League back to the apartment, and how they confirmed that the three thieves had stolen the necklace for the leader of a death cult.

Mira describes attending the meeting, learning something about the cult and then leaving. While the necklace was recovered, somehow.

After recounting all of this, the party is faced with a couple prospects. They could go and attempt to speak to Geordie, who was locked up in the Guard post in the Trade Quarter. Or, they could go directly to the mansion of Lady Ilonia where at least one of them thinks that the thieves are hiding.

DM Note - feel free to elaborate, if you want

Arm
Wednesday April 12th, 2006 5:54:05 AM

After the rest finish their stories, Arm fills in a bit, "As you can see, we're really not sure HOW many people we're up against....there's no telling how many or who is in Ilonia's employ. She seems to be at least moderately wealthy, so anything is possible.".

To the rest, he continues, "I suppose we should try to question Geordie before we set off for the mansion. Perhaps he'll see reason and not take the fall solely for the theft. As I said before, gaining entrance to the manse will be no small task this time, as I'm sure the Lady is aware of recent events. There's another point as well...perhaps we should ask permission from the Swords before we begin an assault. It'll be hard enough to fight the Lady's guards without having to fight the Swords as well, or for that matter be jailed for our troubles.".

Thar ail Baerer
Wednesday April 12th, 2006 9:46:42 AM

After the group finishes telling their story, Thar ponders all that he has heard. Looking towards Arm, he comments "I agree that assaulting the house will be no easy task. If you have some connections within the Swords, then getting their permission makes good sense. I would be most uncomfortable fighting innocent Swords, as well as our group possibly being outnumbered."

Thinking for a few more minutes, he muses "Maybe we should split into two groups. One could meet with the Swords and the other could meet with this Geordie person. We could then meet up after that."

After taking a few more bites of his food, he says "Also, I would like to get some time, after we complete those two tasks, to recon (OOC - not sure what term the elfs would be used to using) the Lady's home, if we are going to assault it in the future."

Shadow
Wednesday April 12th, 2006 1:22:21 PM

Shadow listens to the group as they discuss possible plans to approach their problem. He shakes his head in agreement as the they start fleshing out the actual plan. "Splitting up will work as long as everyone tries to stay out of trouble. As for 'recon' I can pretty much tell you the layout of the house and grounds pretty well."

Conner
Wednesday April 12th, 2006 6:40:24 PM

The affable fighter takes a seat by one of the barrels and quickly consumes a pint of ale before looking about for another. "Name's Conner", he finally introduces himself to the two newcomers. A flash of white teeth dispels the otherwise hardened look of the burly man's appearance.

"Either of you two know more about this 'death cult' business? If it's blood they want, then killing the priest is sure to get it flowing."

Mira
Wednesday April 12th, 2006 9:11:17 PM

Mira looks at the taciturn fighter, all astonishment. "You have a good point there, Conner," she says, continuing, "I wonder if there's a connection?"

"You fighter types seem to have made the best impression on the Plateau City guards, and those hired hand, guys...what's their name...uh, the Silver Swords. I've still got some Invisibility spells and such, so maybe I'll go with the group that goes to the lady's house?"

Mira swirls her wine around in the plain goblet. Time to relinquish the lead to one of the guys. It looks like things are going to get rough!

Many Hands Makes Light Work (DM JohnP)
Wednesday April 12th, 2006 10:39:12 PM

After their repast, the party makes plans for further investigation. Thar suggests splitting up to investigate different areas. Arm had first suggested questioning Geordie and speaking to the Silver Swords.

Shadow describes what he saw of the grounds and upper floor of the mansion. But he didn't see any sign of cult activities up there, even in what he thought was Lady Ilonia's chambers.

Conner raises the possibility that the death cult wants to provoke widespread violence in the city. Mira agrees that might be the motive for what has occurred.

All the while, Kadaz and Ash just keep eating and drinking. Neither contributes anything to the conversation. When everyone but these two are finished their meals, the boy timidly approaches the party to clear away the table and ask for payment.

Finally, everyone stands and makes plans to accomplish their two missions. The party and the newcomers sort themselves out into the two groups and start to head off. The final thing that they discuss is where to meet.

Arm
Thursday April 13th, 2006 6:07:26 AM

Arm says to the group, "Well, it's decided, then. Shadow, Mira and I should head to the Lady's house, and you are welcome to tag along as well, um...Thar, is it? Conner, Kadaz, and Ash should go and pay a visit to Geordie and see if we can get the Swords' blessing should we need to assault the mansion. I think it best if we all meet back here in a few hours time, then if we are decided, begin our assault on the mansion this evening.". He then waits for the rest of the group to see if they agree.

Kadaz
Thursday April 13th, 2006 7:07:46 AM

Kadaz looks up, surprised at how much time has passedwhile he had been concentrating on his food.

"Geordie is being held by the Guard. I am sure we can get into question him. But the Silver Swords, being a private force, isn't going to let us assault one of their clients. And just talking to them will probably cause them to alert Lady Ilonia. I suggest more secret surveillance of her place will yield better results than a frontal assault."

Thar ail Baerer
Thursday April 13th, 2006 10:09:31 AM

Nodding at Arm's comments, Thar says "Yes, I'll go with you, Shadow and Mira to look at the Lady's place."

Looking towards the Dwarf, he comments "You have a good point about the Silver Swords possibly alerting Lady Ilonia."

Thinking for a moment, he says "Arm, what do you think about Kadaz's concerns about the Silver Swords alerting Lady Ilonia? You felt that speaking to them first would be wise, but Kadaz has made some good observations about them alerting the Lady."

"Either way, I'm going to the Lady's house to recon so you all can figure out what makes best sense"

Ash
Thursday April 13th, 2006 12:35:21 PM

Ash, who has been staring at nothing in particular throughout the repast, considers the points made by the various strangers. As he is not sufficiently knowledgeable of the individuals in question, he adds nothing to the conversation, just sits and listens. He is however, curious about this lady that they keep referring to.

Shadow
Thursday April 13th, 2006 4:21:35 PM

Shadow eats, but is distracted by trying to remember all the details of the manor. When the group starts to determine what everyone is doing, Shadow listens more carefully. He shakes his head as Arm starts working out where the individuals are going. Then Kadaz brings up the issue with the Silver Swords, "I guess we need to hope they do not show up then."

Conner
Thursday April 13th, 2006 7:50:46 PM

"The guards it is then" Conner grins at the timid youth and leaves three gold pieces for his lunch on the barrel. "I'd like to have a word with that Geordie character..."

Mira
Thursday April 13th, 2006 9:46:17 PM

Mira laughs happily, though it is serious business they are about. "I have been saving up my magics for a long time and have been wanting to be of more use to you, my friends, than I have been in the past." The sorcerer continues, "I have spells and scrolls that can help us get past the Silver Swords without them ever knowing!" Gesturing towards the rogue, she continues, "I'm sure Shadow is clever enough to evade the guards, and I have magics that can let us fly or climb as well as become invisible!"

(Between spells and scrolls, Mira can cast 3 Invisibility, 2 Spider Climb, 1 Fly, as well as a variety of combat magics!)

Division of Labour (DM JohnP)
Thursday April 13th, 2006 11:19:45 PM

After Conner pays the boy for the meal, the party walks away from teh Flying Fish tavern.

Arm suggests that he, Mira, Shadow and the newcomer Thar go to look at Lady Ilonia's mansion. And that the others should call on the Guard, hoping to be able to speak with Geordie.

However, Arm's words prompt a debate about the Silver Swords. Would they become involved if the party attempts something, or would they stand aside? Maybe it depends on how upset Lukas and the others are about Geordie lying to them.

After some parting comments, Thar, Shadow and Mira start walking to the west. Considering the unrest in the City, retracing their steps from earlier in the day will probably be quicker.

At the same time, Kadaz, Conner and the newcomer Ash head to the southwest towards the Guard post.

========================================

The four intending to reconnoiter the mansion make their way through the streets of Plateau City. They can see more members of the Guard on patrol and, at least in Trade Quarter, groups of residents standing guard. The foursome don't get close enough to determine whether these groups are pro- or anti-elf, or simply trying to protect their homes.

Merchant Quarter and Guild Quarter are quieter. As before, there is evidence of increased Guard patrols. And several larger shops or businesses seem to have hired private guards, too.

The Temple of Light is both a literal and figurative island of calm in the City. Still, there are even more people coming to the Shepherds for healing than they saw earlier in the morning.

Finally, they cross the bridge into Wealthy Quarter. There are only Guards here, not Silver Swords. But as they move through the streets, they see signs that more of the private guard force are on the streets. After a bit of walking, the four are just down the street from Lady Ilonia's mansion. From here, they cannot see any sign of a guard at the gate.

========================================

The other three walk across Trade Quarter to the Guard post. While skirting Open Palm Market, Conner and Kadaz can see that there are fewer vendors out ... probably everyone has decided that staying home is safer on this day or unrest. Four human men looked ready to challenge them for walking with a half-elf, but thought better when they saw the fighters, the dog and the wolf.

Ash looks about at the city while they walk. It's crowded and built mainly of stone and brick, at least the lower floors of buildings. He senses that people distrust either him or Shelya.

When the trio reach the Guard post, it's obviously busy. And, unusually, someone is standing guard outside. The young guard nods to both Kadaz and Conner, remembering them from the morning. But he holds up a hand when Ash and Shelya move towards the door.

"No monsters, not inside. You and it have to stay out," pointing at Shelya.

Kadaz and Conner aren't able to persuade him to budge. But they do get permission to enter the Guard post themselves. When they do enter, Sergeant Tomin nods to them after finishing what he was working on.

"What do you two gentlemen want?," Tomin asks. He seems weary, worn down by the day's events.

After the two ask to speak to Geordie, he looks at them for a moment.

"He's still here, and I suppose that you can speak to him. Just keep it civil, if you know what I mean. First, though, why exactly do you want to speak to him again?"

After the pair answer his questions, he signals to the jailer and has them taken into the cell area.

Meanwhile, Ash is cooling his heels outside.

Arm thinks for a moment, then says to Kadaz, "In most cases, you're probably right, my friend. However, with the problems regarding Geordie and his two friends, whom by now it is rather clear that they were responsible for Tredegar's untimely demise and thereby causing unnecessary problems for the Swords, they just may be more agreeable to our plan. While you're there, mention to them that the two we AND they are looking for are most likely at the Lady's mansion, and see what their response is.".

After they leave the Flying Fish, Arm takes Mira's hand and smiles at her, hoping to provide comfort for her as well as for himself. As they approach the mansion, he scans the area carefully to see if there is an easy way inside (spot=21, listen=22).

Shadow, you're more skilled than any of us are, so what are your thoughts about how many of us should go in and how we should plan our entry? Mira can make some of us invisible and fly in, while others can sneak in other ways.

To the Shadow and Mira, he muses "Also, what are we exactly looking for in there?"

On the walk to the guard post Kadaz will talk with Ash. "Where is you home? Is it far from here? Anything interesting happen on you way here?" Birdie walks beside Shelya (taking 3 steps for every one of the wolf's)also trying to make nice.

At the guard post Kadaz will talk with the sergeant. "When we were walking home we remembered that Geordie here had friends working with him. We want to see if he is willing to talk about them. We're concerned that they may still be working a scam."

Ash considers Kadaz' questions for a minute before answering, "My home is where I am, and where I am is my home. However, the journey here was, as they say, uneventful. And you? How did you arrive at this place and time?"

Shelya continues beside Ash, every now and then looking at Birdie to ensure that the city dog knows its place in the pack.

Trade Quarter Guard Post (DM JohnP)  d20+5=14 d20+5=13
Sunday April 16th, 2006 5:38:09 PM

During the short walk from the Flying Fish to the Guard post, Kadaz tries striking up a conversation with Ash. The newcomer answers in a fashion, saying that he is a wanderer. All the while, Shelya is making sure that Birdie knows his place among the four-footed members of the group.

When the three people and two canines reach the Guard post, Kadaz and Conner enter while Ash waits outside with Shelya and Birdie. Kadaz replies to Sergeant Tomin's question by telling the Sergeant that Geordie's former companions may be involved in a scam or swindle in the city.

After a nod from the Sergeant, Kadaz and Conner enter the cells area. Conner looms over Geordie and threatens him. The thief has been getting nervous while he's been waiting, not knowing what will happen to him.
DM Note: Treated it as an untrained Intimidate check

Geordie stammers, "Priest? Killed? Fred and Daim wouldn't have done something like that!"

The thief looks nervously at Kadaz and the doorway to the main room of the Guard post, then continues speaking.

"Look, I talked them into stealing Vaeder's necklace. Even into joining up with his bunch of losers, but they was nothing more than sneak thieves, like me. Not killers."

"It was me who talked them into doing the job for Ilonia. I shouldn't have gone to her meetings, never."

"Since you're gonna put in a good word with the Guild, and the Guard too, I could maybe help you out. Tell you what I know about Ilonia and the Bearers of the Chalice."

His confidence shattered, Geordie starts spilling everything that he knows.

"I started going to meetings at Lady Ilonia's a couple months back. Thought to case the place, you know. But something ... something seemed right, you know. About what they were saying about needing to balance things out. Let the weak perish and the strong would be left."

"So I kept going back. Gradually did more and more, you know. Drank from the Chalice and the rest. Talked Fred and Daim into coming, too. So, a while back, Ilonia heard about Vaeder's necklace ... one of his League buddies mentioned it, I guess. She asked us three to "get it", if you know what I mean."

"So we joined that bunch of bums to get close. Turned out we didn't need to, drunken bum didn't keep it safe half the time. You know the rest. After it disappeared, Ilonia asked me to pose as a servant and swear the complaint."

He looks back and forth between Kadaz and Conner.

"You were there, saw us carry the Chalice out. The sanctum is under the house, down in the sub-basement. We never saw the innermost sanctum 'cause we were new. But it's somewhere back of the house, that I know."

Conner and Kadaz look at one another, wondering if they should ask any more questions.

Out in the sunlight, Ash keeps his eyes open. With Sheyla resting near his feet, the pedestrians make a wide detour around him. No one says anything, but he can tell that they're all wary. He doesn't see anything else unusual.

At the Mansion (DM JohnP)
Sunday April 16th, 2006 9:36:56 PM

During the long walk from the Flying Fish to Wealthy Quarter, Arm tries to patch things up with Mira. However, the sorcerer is strangely quiet.

When the four near Lady Ilonia's mansion, everyone starts looking more closely to their surroundings. Arm, Thar and Shadow confirm that there is no guard on the gate. Looking inside the grounds, Arm and Shadow note that there doesn't seem to be anyone outside the mansion either. And on the street, no one seems to be paying too much attention to the mansion.

The grounds look well kept, with neatly trimmed lawns and artfully arranged flowerbeds. In the daylight, the ballroom where the cult meeting was held last night is obviously newer than the remainder of the mansion. Some kind of small house or building behind the mansion can be seen through the windows of the ballroom.

If they wanted, the foursome could stroll right into the grounds. They can't see any sign of anyone inside the house, either.

Arm
Monday April 17th, 2006 5:55:07 AM

After a look at Mira, wondering why she's brushing him off, Arm briefly gives Thar a description of the two killers they're looking for as well as what they've done. To Shadow, he says, "Since it doesn't seem to be guarded at the present, perhaps now WOULD be a good time to take a quick look around.".

The sorcerer had been pre-occupied during the walk over to the wealthy quarter. "I hate dividing up the group," she confesses to Arm.

Mira studies the newcomer, Thar, wondering about his training and skills, but there isn't much opportunity for conversation. She studies his person in order to learn what equipment; weapons and magic, he might own.

When the group arrives at Ladiy Iliona's mansion, her attention turns to their surroundings.

"Check for alarms and traps first," adds Mira, voicing concern. "This seems to easy."

Looking around him, Thar agrees with Mira. "This looks way too easy for us. With all of the problems going on in the city, I can't imagine that a nice mansion like this would go unguarded. I too agree that we should check for any alarms or traps. If we find nothing, then should we walk into the front, so we don't look overly suspicous? Or would going in invisible and flying work best, to remain ever being seen."

Thinking about it for a moment more, he comments "Now that I think about it, once the rest of the group gets here, going invisible and flying in would likely be our best bet."

Conner looks down at the man in disgust. "So, this Lady Illonia, is she some kind of cleric? Could she have held some kind of mental power over your friends to make them kill that priest? What detail do you know of their plans?"

Kadaz
Monday April 17th, 2006 1:42:41 PM

Kadaz tries to wheedle some more info out of the prisoner. "Geordie, sound like Lady Illonia never really trusted you with any real information. And when she needed a fall guy she picked you. Fred and Daim may know more, and if they are found you may have an easier time of it when your case is called. Tell us everything you know about these two, especially where they might be found. It might be better for you, and it can't hurt your position."

Further Conversation with Geordie (DM JohnP)
Monday April 17th, 2006 10:40:28 PM

Before leaving, Conner and Kadaz ask some final questions of Geordie.

Geordie looks up at Conner when he asks about Lady Ilonia. Mainly, he nods in agreement with Kadaz.

"She's no cleric, not that I know anyway. If any were actual clerics, I never heard it. But they'd be in the inner sanctum, if there were any."

"Like I said, I don't think Fred and Daim would kill the priest. Not enough ... guts, I'd say. We was sneak-thieves, before this. And I never heard no plans about any thing."

When Conner mentions magic, he shrugs. "Could be, but I'd not really notice if it were."

"Last I saw Fred and Daim, they were still at Ilonia's place, downstairs."

He laughs grimly then. "Really, I don't expect to ever see a magistrate."

After the two leave the cell, Sergeant Tomin stops them.

"You told me that you wanted to stop his partners swindling someone. What's this talk about Tredegar?"

Outside, Ash is cooling his heels.

On the Grounds (DM JohnP)
Monday April 17th, 2006 10:54:19 PM

The foursome look into the grounds of Lady Ilonia's mansion, wondering whether they should simply enter.

Of course, Arm is all in favour of a quick look around but Mira and Thar counsel caution. As they're doing this, they see a man patrolling the grounds with a dog come from behind the mansion. Perhaps there are more guards somewhere inside.

Before they clear off, Shadow has a chance to check the open gate. There's no evidence of any traps or alarms.

Arm  d20+4=8 d20+11=23

Staring grimly at the guard and dog, Arm gently takes Mira's hand and says, "Looks like our free chance has expired. Let us return to the Fish and await the others, then decide what to do then.".

Turning back, he scans the area for suspicious characters (moreso than THEM, that is-spot=8, listen=23).

Kadaz
Tuesday April 18th, 2006 5:52:06 AM

Kadaz looks at the sergeant and decides to share information. "When we first met Geordie he was running with two others, Fred and Daim. Geordie admits they were thieves. And all three were members of an anti-elvish hate group. Now we don't know for sure, but Fred and Diam are similiar in appearance to those who killed Tredegar. Geordie doesn't think the two are more then thieves, but I and my friends want to find them. If we discover anything we'll bring it to you."

That said, Kadaz goes outside to meet up with Ash. "The only new thing is that there is a subbasement under Lady Illona's house. And that's the last place Geordie saw the other two. So let's go meet up with the others."

Mira  d20+2=21 d20+2=13

Shadow's direction.

"Arm and I can cover your backs from here. Just have a quick look in the lower windows, no need to climb to the higher ones...yet." Mira watches the guard with the dog, "slip by after he passes...have a quick look...then come back." With a look at Arm, she adds, "then, we'll join up with the others."

Sergeant Tomin's Question (DM JohnP)
Tuesday April 18th, 2006 9:07:23 PM

Leaving the cell, Conner listens to Geordie's last remark. Instead of the bravado of a man expecting to be set free, his remark sounded more like a man who didn't expect to live long enough for a trial.

Kadaz answers Sergeant Tomin's question, explaining about the possible resemblance between Geordie's associates and the murderers of Tredegar. Sergeant Tomin looks at Kadaz, shaking his head.

"You should have told me this before because it's important. You know what will happen if some people catch sight of these two, don't you? But if you do find them, let me or the nearest Guard post know. If nothing else, the Guard can hold them before trial."

Sergeant Tomin nods when Conner makes his parting remark.

"Aye, if he and his friends are tied up in Tredegar's death we will certainly keep him under wraps."

Kadaz and Conner go outside where Ash has been waiting with Birdie and Shelya. The three humans fighters and the two canines start making their way to Wealthy District after a brief conversation.

The journey through the streets of Plateau City is uneventful. Despite seeing several Guard patrols, nobody challenges the presence of a wolf. Crossing the bridge to Wealthy District provides a good view of the entire city and particularly the streets ahead of them. From this vantage, it seems that everything is quiet. But they all know that tensions are simmering throughout the city.

The three pass a Silver Sword post and drawn nothing more than bored looks from the two people standing guard.

When Ash, Conner and Kadaz round the final corner, they see Mira and Arm loitering innocently outside the mansion's gate. There's no sign of Shadow or Thar.

Shrubberies!! (DM JohnP)
Tuesday April 18th, 2006 9:17:55 PM

The foursome tries to look nonchalant when the guard walks by with the dog. Arm is disappointed that the chance to sneak in has passed, but Mira suggests waiting until the guard has gone out of sight again.

The sorcerer keeps a careful eye on the guard and when she sees him pass out of sight she signals to the other members of the foursome. Shadow and Thar dart across the lawn up to the plantings at the front of the house. As far as they can tell, no one outside or inside the house saw them.

Standing amidst the shrubs at the front of the house, the two try to look inside. Thar catches a glimpse of a servant or guard walking inside the house. But otherwise, all that he and Shadow see are rooms decorated with nice furniture and carpets.

At the gate, Mira and Arm see the others approaching.

At the Gate (DM JohnP)
Thursday April 20th, 2006 7:52:34 AM

Everyone gets together outside the gate to Lady Ilonia's mansion. In response to Mira's question, Kadaz recounts what Geordie had to say.

He repeats himself when Shadow and Thar slip back across the grounds and join the party. When Thar suggests waiting for night, Conner mpatiently suggests going now when they might least expect it.

Ash mentions that Shelya and Birdie could probably deal with the guard dog. Following on Arm's question about masking scent, everyone realizes that they'll only have a matter of minutes before the guard makes his next round. When he passes by the gate, the dog is sure to notice that there have been intruders.

If they decide to enter the grounds, the party can see both the patio and door into the ballroom where they entered last night. That has the advantage of being an area that most of the party has seen.

There's also the front door of the mansion although no one really has a good idea of what the ground floor of the mansion looks like.

They could also scout the grounds to look for another way in. Shadow figures that he could climb to the unlocked second floor window again and drop a rope down for the others.

Or they could stay here and try to bluff or otherwise persuade the patrolling guard of their innocence.

Finally, they could simply walk away and plan to come back later. Conner doesn't like this idea, obviously, and it's not certain what the guard with the dog will do.

Someone needs to decide and choose which course the party will take.

Mira keeps her magics ready in case any of her party aren't particularly adept at hiding (invisibility) or a distraction is required (can shoot off a magic missile).

"Maybe the guard dog is a female, Kadaz! Birdie is a male, right?" Mira whispers to the dwarf. "Mayhap diplomacy will be in order?"

The Action Starts! (DM JohnP)  d20+3=13
Friday April 21st, 2006 7:52:42 AM

A decision has been made and the party starts across the lawn of the mansion. Shadow is the first across the lawn and he heads towards the ballroom.

Thar follows him to the patio, with the others trotting behind.

Ash tries to get Shelya to attack the guard dog. He gets the impression that Shelya is willing but doesn't understand what Ash wants her to attack. She seems eager to go as soon as Ash shows her who to attack.
DM JohnP - from PHB, your roll exceeded the DC of 10 for the learned Attack trick. But it requires a visible target.

Instead of joining the others on the patio, Conner heads into the plantings in front of the house to prepare an ambush.

Kadaz moves his short legs across the grounds, explaining that Birdie isn't attack trained.

Stumbling behind everyone else, Mira wonders if either Shelya or Birdie could "occupy" the guard dog's attention. Running beside the sorcerer, Arm expresses the hope that they haven't jumped in without enough planning.

Except for Conner, everyone is standing on the patio while Shadow examines the glass doors. The doors are unlocked and not protected by any traps.

Shadow is just easing the doors open when Arm and Conner spot the guard approaching from the far end of the house. The pair plod along, the guard looking towards the street until the guard dog starts pulling at the leash. The guard looks up then and sees the party standing on the patio. The guard jerks on the leash to restrain the dog and walks closer.

It's puzzling, but he doesn't seem too alarmed until he gets close enough to the patio to see Shelya and Birdie with the party and count the people.

"Wha ...? How come so many? You know no animals, didn't you?"

Shadow is shocked a little by the guards reaction. He expected an alarm from him immediately, but realizes that still could happen. He will move forward to try and occupy the guards attention. Hopefully the rest of the group will join him to silence this quard quickly. (Shadow will try and silenc the guard without trying to kill him - OOC: John, I don't have my books here at work, so I forget what - that gives to attack. "May we keep the dogs outside while we go in? Maybe you could watch them for us.?"

Shadow moves towards the guard and dog to try and silence him. The two dogs converge on the guard dog trying to occupy it. Just as everyone else is readying to attack, Mira casts a spell from a scroll and the groups dogs, the guard dog, and the guard all slump to the ground sleeping.

The sudden commotion does not seem to have attracted any attention.

DM Post (Scott ADM for John)
Tuesday April 25th, 2006 1:41:12 PM

Mira confirms there is no one present in the ballroom and signals to the rest to get the guard and the dog into the ballroom. Arm scans the area, but there are no other guards that he can see. Thar follows behind Shadow, as the thief binds the man and the dog, and uses material he tears off of the guard to gag both the man and the dog. Ash and Kadaz, first wake up their sleeping animals (make sure to read the post about all three dogs succombing to the sleep spell) and then get them herded inside the ballroom.

When the group enters it is unchanged (for those that have been here before), but there is noone present. From the patio, the party descends 10' or descends 5' from the main part of the house. Windows with tied back curtains are on three of the four walls. In daylight, it looks expensive with finely made wood floors and stone and plaster walls. There are chandeliers suspended from the ceiling.

At the back of the ballroom is the door where the party observed the cultists entering and leaving.

There are two exits, the door in the far corner, or double doors that look to lead into the mansion (on the same wall, but up some stairs).

Mira moves to the vicinity of the door, but leaves plenty of room for the others to get in close to it. "If it is hard to open, I have some magic that might work." The green-eyed woman fishes around in her scroll case to ensure that the required parchment is close at hand.

Waiting by the Door (DM JohnP)
Wednesday April 26th, 2006 1:12:52 PM

Thank you for subbing for me, Scott - JohnP

After dumping the sleeping guard and dog by the entrance, the party prepares to slip across the empty ballroom. Before going, Shadow checked the bindings on the guard and dog and found that they were as secure as he could make them. Ash and Kadaz wake their animals so that they don't have to be carried.

Their footsteps echo quietly as they move towards the door in the corner. Glancing up at the double doors that presumably lead to the main house, Conner leads the party to the door the cultists used. Mira and Arm both recommend caution.

Once everyone is clustered around the door, both Thar and Shadow bend to examine it. After taking the time to examine the door, both conclude that the door is unlocked and unprotected by any traps. Each of them can hear loud conversation on the other side of the door - two men, from the sound of it, arguing about local sports teams. The speakers arent' right on the otherside of the door, either, so it's not easy to hear them. Thar and Shadow can also smell some kind of spicy cooking, they're not sure what.

Shadow reaches out and opens the door, pushing it back quietly. There is a small 5'x5' landing on the other side of the door. Opposite, a short flight of stairs goes upwards to another landing before continuing upwards to the upper floors of the house. The upper landing has a closed door and an opening into what the rogue guesses is a kitchen. The voices are coming from the kitchen.

To the right, stairs descend downwards into gloom. Now that the door is open, Shadow and Thar can hear some low chanting or praying coming from the lower floor. The stairs turn after a landing 10' below so nothing can be seen from the lower floor. The scent of some kind of incense drifts up the stairs from the lower level.

Thursday April 27th, 2006 3:06:38 PM

Everyone shuffles around outside the door. Some people want to get to the front while others want to get to the back. And the wolf and the dog try not to get stepped on.

After the re-organization, Shadow steps through onto the landing to scout. He can now see further into the basement level. It's gloomy down there, but not so dark that the humans wouldn't be able to see. He thinks that there are some lanterns or magical lights being used for illumination. Not much is seen, however, because of a heavy curtain beside the stairs that blocks vision to the south. The chanting seems to be coming from there.

Thar is right behind Shadow, just outside the door. He is close enough to hear some of the chanting from the basement. He hears references to Gargul but it doesn't sound like the prayers commonly recited to the God of Life and Death.

Kadaz has muscled his way forward to sand near the door, dwarfishly eager to descend below ground and slaughter things.

Arm wanted to move ahead too, so he's now just beyond the landing. From where he is standing, he hears the conversation continue in the kitchen. Despite his clumsiness and everyone else stomping around, it seems that the people there didn't hear them.

Conner moves to guard the rear of the party. Looking over to where the guard and dog were left, he can see them starting to stir. Shadow's knots seem to be holding.

Mira also moves to the back. From what she could tell before she moved away, the chanting isn't magical.

Ash might be feeling claustrophobic or maybe just considerate of Shelya's toes. Either way, he shuffles out of the way of everyone else.

The party hasn't been noticed by anyone (or anything) but the guard and his dog who are tied up. They can head downstairs or up towards the kitchen.

DM Note - Please specify a square where you want the charater to be. In these narrow confines, I'm changing my mind about double cost to move through friends ... at least until combat actually starts.

If you don't want to specify a square, then state which area (e.g. basement, kitchen, ballroom, etc.) the character is going to.

In case it's not obvious, there is enough light for humans, etc. to see in the basement.

Thar stays right behind him, with Kadaz trailing. The dwarf ends up standing on the stairs while the other two are in the basement. The dwarf accidentally scrapes his armor against the wall as he moves down the stairs.

All three of them glance around the basement. The dwarf judges that the three walls are stone and mortar that is in good condition. The ceiling arches overhead, supporting the main and upper floor of the mansion. There are some lanterns hung her to provide light. A heavy black curtain hangs across the basement to the south. The chanting and incense comes from the other side of the curtain.

The three down in the basement hear movement on the other side of the curtain. Then an arm moves the curtain aside and a human male peers out.

"Hey, you're not ..."

Then the man jabs at Kadaz with a dagger, the edge skittering across the dwarf's chainmail.
Cultist 1 misses AC 20

Through the opening, Kadaz can see four of five other cultists standing around some kind of marking on the floor, with black curtains like the one in front of him.

Mira (AC13+4 Mage Armor, 35 HP)
Monday May 1st, 2006 11:19:02 PM

Things are getting kind of bunched up in the hallway, and Mira isn't sure what to do to help the bard.

The sorcerer fishes out a scroll, and reads off the words she had previously studied. With a wave of her hand she tranfers the magic to Conner. The scroll dissingtigrates into a black powder and those with keen sight might see a tiny black spider scuttle away.

"You should be able to climb and traverse the walls much as a spider would," she tells the fighter. "Go help our companion!"

Conner [AC=22 HP=52] Spider Climb
Monday May 1st, 2006 11:41:01 PM

Conner seems startled at first as the magic washes over him, but he quickly appreciates the benefits provided by Mira's spell and nods his head in acknowledgement. Without a word he stows his shield on his back to free his hands and begins to climb up the wall towards the ceiling. His fingers and feet adhere to the smooth surface of the wall and he quickly finds himself looking down on his companions from the top of the hallway.

[OOC stow an item and move 20', assuming a 10' ceiling I imagine am somewhere over the wolf]

Arm AC 18 (base+4 mage armor) HP 14  d20+4=17 d8+3=9
Tuesday May 2nd, 2006 5:54:06 AM

Still determined, Arm takes another swipe at the offender (G2), knowing that he hit this time as well (attk: 17, dmg: 9).

Kadaz (AC 21, HP 53/53) & Birdie (AC 17, HP 7/7)  d20+15=19
Tuesday May 2nd, 2006 6:46:48 AM

Kadaz is ready and swings his flail at the dagger in in the hands of the cultist. He hits! The dagger goes clattering to the floor of the cellar.
(disarm roll = 19 = 4 + 5 BAB +4 strength +4 feat +2 flail bonus)

"Surrender now!" shouts Kadaz. "and you won't get hurt." Kadaz stands ready to hit at this guy's head if he stoops to pick up the dagger.

Birdie starts to snarl at the man who attacked Kadaz. But his training holds and he keeps his place on the steps, ready to bite any one coming close.

Thar ail Baerer
Tuesday May 2nd, 2006 10:23:08 AM

Seeing that the fight is going to get interesting soon and there are several priests in that room, Thar will cast Summon Monster I (at a caster level 3) and call forth a Celestial Dog, to stand forth b/t Thar and the priests in the room and ready to attack their foes.

Ash

Once he is sure that Shelya is okay and understands what is going on, Ash proceeds to cast
Summon Nature's Ally 1 to summon an additional wolf to assist Shelya.

In the Basement - Round 3 (DM JohnP)  d20+6=20 d6+2=4 d20+6=22 d6+2=4 d20+2=20

Tuesday May 2nd, 2006 10:38:00 PM

Things are getting more interestingly both at the top of the stairs and in the basement.

Seeing how crowded the hallway is, Mira grabs a scroll from her pack and recites the words scribes there. She reaches out and touches Conner, transferring the magic allowing the fighter to move on the walls and ceiling.

With the strange feeling still fresh on his fingertips and feet, Conner stows his shield and moves forward. He ends up on the ceiling over Shelya, not close enough to attack this round.

Stuck in the hallway, Arm swings his sword one more time and again hits the guard. The man is looking pretty hurt now, wincing with pain.

Ash ensures that Shelya will attack the guard then starts summoning a wolf to assist in the fight.

Downstairs, Kadaz swings his flail in an arc that strips the dagger from the man's hand. It falls to the floor somewhere under the curtain. Kadaz orders the man to surrender but he doesn't immediately respond. Birdie growls but holds her spot on the stairs. Kadaz gets a better look at the man and sees that he's dressed in nice clothes, more expensive than functional.

Thinking that some assistance is needed, Thar begins the incantations to summon a animal servant of his good Power. The creature will appear next round and be able to leap into the battle.
DM JohnP -- Casting time is 1 round. Place the celestial dog in your next post and either move it or immediately attack.

Shadow stands motionless, thinking about what to do.
DM JohnP - Post anyway and I'll make the changes tomorrow morning. The map may not get updated, though. For that matter, make two rounds posts if you want.

========================================

The injured guard takes one last jab at Arm, hitting the bard again. Then he steps back onto the stairs leading upwards.
Guard 2 hits AC 20, 4 damage

The second guard moves out of the kitchen and stabs at Arm with his shortsword. He also hits with his weapon.
Guard 3 hits AC 22, 4 damage

Downstairs, the weaponless cultist steps away from Kadaz and pulls down one section of the curtain as he moves. Another cultist draws his dagger and moves forward to engage the dwarf. Again, the dwarf's chainmail turns the edge of the dagger enough to protect him.
Cultist 3 misses AC 20

The remaining four cultists scramble to their feet and move away from the fighting. One tries to move towards the stairs but Birdie's growling makes her back away. Kadaz and Thar can see all of them clearly now and realize that the two thieves are not among these cultists.

Ash
Wednesday May 3rd, 2006 12:18:28 AM

Upon ensuring that Shelya has made her way into the basement, presumably to attack enemies there, and deciding that Connor and Arm have things well in hand, and that the summoned wolf has begun to hunt enemies as well; Ash considers it most likely that his assistance will be needed in the basement as well.

As such, he prepares his staff, mouthing a silent prayer to the spirits, and heads into the basement.

Arm (AC 18 {14 base + mage armor}, HP 6)  d20+4=19 d8+3=4
Wednesday May 3rd, 2006 6:02:37 AM

Feeling the effects of the two attacks, Arm is happy when he sees his friend drop down from the ceiling upon his foe. He takes a solid stab at the new assailant (attk: 19, dmg: 4), but feels that he did little damage. He would have liked to fall back, but was afraid of reprisal from the guard before he could do so. His only hope is that Conner can provide some assistance in downing this new threat before he falls.

Having become used to being relegated to the back of the pack by the men-folk, Mira looks at the newcomer, Ash. "Do something!" she cries to the ranger(?). Mira then takes matters into her own hands. Pivotting to face the opening, she raises her hands, palms out. "Duck" she calls out, followed by "Templa pilini!". Magical energy darts forth to strike the enemy facing Arm. Taking advantage of his new mobility, Conner moves over the guard attacking Arm and unexpectedly drops onto him. Conner's full weight falls onto the guard, injuring and knocking him to the floor. After completing his incantations and thinking things through, Ash decides to follow Shelya into the basement. Ash finally stands between Kadaz and the wall.

Arm swings his sword at the prone guard, hitting him and injuring him slightly. The bard could fall back but decides to stay close and take advantage of the fallen opponent.

Level check = 15, not Shaken

Shadow stabs at the cultist (C6) beside him but misses the woman.

On the other side of the basement, Thar completes his summoning spell and directs the celestial dog to immediately attack the first cultist (C1). The dog manages to bite the man and then Thar draws his own weapons and steps forward. He hits with both swings, disabling the cultist.

Wanting to take some of the pressure off Arm and Conner, Mira encourages the new druid member of the party to participate. Then she steps forward and sends some balls of magical force at the prone guard. The missiles fly true and injure the guard.

Conner [AC=19 HP=49/52] Spider Climb  d20+11=28 d3+7=8 d20+11=23 d8+7=10
Wednesday May 3rd, 2006 10:10:59 PM

Conner lands almost astride the prone guard, and when the man attempts to stand he lashes out with his boot, catching the guard squarely in the face [Hit G3 AC=28 for 8 HP]. Sensing that this guard has likely had enough, the fighter turns his attention to the other assailant and slashes at him with his longsword [Hit G2 AC=23 for 10 HP].

Conner's tattoo has taken on a deep crimson colour as the excitement of battle overtakes him. He stands in place looking from foe to foe, a gleam in his eye that seems to dare the guards to try him again.

Arm AC 18 (14 base + mage armor) HP 6  d20+4=23 d20+4=19 d8+3=8

Kadaz (AC 21, HP 53/53) & Birdie (AC 17, HP 7/7)  d20+4=8
Thursday May 4th, 2006 2:26:26 PM

Kadaz looks around quickly and is taken back by the sudden appearance of yet another wolf and another dog. And one of the cultist's is down and bleeding! "Fight to capture them!" he yells at his allies "We need information". With that in mind Kadaz lifts his shield and moves foward into the cultist in front of him, trying to force the man to trip over the one lieing on the floor. But in his rush the dwarf didn't set himself properly and makes a poor showing, accomplishing nothing but allowing the cultist a free swing.
(Bull rush to make C2 fall backwards over C1 but then roll 8 on opposed strength check)

Birdie, concentrating on the cultist who have retreated the far wall, is taken aback by not 1 but 2 new canines in the basement! Where did these come from? He starts growling at these interlopers who haven't been properly introduced.

Mira (AC13+4 Mage Armor, 35 HP)
Thursday May 4th, 2006 7:26:19 PM

Sensing the bard needs a little extra help, the sorcerer reaches for another scroll with her free hand. She gives the scroll a shake to unfurl it as she takes a step to close on Arm (square J4). Placing a hand on the half-elf she finishes the incantation and the scroll shifts and waivers before disintegrating.

The bard's outline appears blurred and distorted, making it more difficult for his enemies to strike true.

Thursday May 4th, 2006 11:09:01 PM

Things appear to be coming to a conclusion on the main floor, but more combatants are appearing in the basement.

Conner takes advantage of the fallen guard and hits him as the guard tries to stand. The fighter's longsword cuts deeply into the man and he slumps to the ground, bleeding. Then Conner turns to the other guard and drops him also. Both guards lay bleeding on the ground.

Arm had a really good swing lined up but both guards have dropped.

Conner hears a noise behind him in the kitchen and turns around. An elderly woman is standing by the stove. She smiles at Conner while stirring the spicy stew or soup that everyone has smelt. She seems happy when she says, "Good work, there. Ilonia, that gold-digging bitch, is down in the basement with her friends. I'll look after these two." She grabs some rags and cord but doesn't move to the guards yet.

Sense Motive DC 10 - Highlight to display spoiler: {She sincerely does not like Ilonia and is happy to see some people coming to deal with her employer.}

Mira retrieves another scroll from her pack and steps forward to the landing. She recites the words on the scroll and puts some more protective magic on Arm.

Down in the basement, Thar moves away from his fallen opponent and attacks the newly arrived guard. His swords bite deeply through the man's studded armor but not enough to drop him. His summoned dog moves over and also attacks the guard, but cannot get through the armor.
Celestial dog -- Round 2/3

Kadaz tries to push the cultist back but cannot budge him. The cultist (C2) swings at the dwarf but cannot connect.

Shelya leaps to the floor and races to the corner where her quarry has retreated. She launches herself at the woman again, but must have slipped on something because she's nowhere near the woman.

Shadow waits and watches things unfold.

The newly arrived guard G4 swings again at Thar but cannot get past the cleric's armor.
Guard 4 misses AC 10

The other guard G5 steps forward and swings at the celestial dog. His shortsword connects and, with a yelp, the dog returns whence it came.
Guard 5 hits AC 22, 3 damage

The other cultists continue to cower along the far wall. With Shelya down there, they try to edge away from the wolf. When cultist C5 moves away, Shelya snaps at him and misses. Cultist C6 takes advantage of Shelya's poor fighting ability and also moves away.

DM Note - Revised the attack by the cultist since I didn't correctly reflect that they were prone. New text is bold

Ash  d20+4=11 d20+3=12 d20+2=12
Shelya damage d6+2=5 Trip d20+3=18 Wolf damage d6+1=2
Friday May 5th, 2006 12:44:22 AM

Shelya, annoyed at her failure to hit, attempts to bite the cultist nearest her (1d20+3+1=11).

The summoned wolf continues to attack the guard nearest it (1d20 +3 = 12). I think that hits, so its trip is 1d20 +2 = 12)

As uses his relative position to examine the battlefield. As everyone else seems to have the situation in hand. He notes that the dwarf, Kadaz, has been hit but that it was not serious enough to warrant healing (yet).

Given the relative calm around him, Ash looks to see how many more (if any) guards are arriving and what the situation is in the parts of the basement that he can see beyond the melee.

ed. DM JohnP - Shelya hit, so I rolled damage and Trip attack. Summoned wolf hit and I rolled damage (2 hps). Cultist is now dying.

Arm AC 18 (base+4 mage armor) HP 6
Friday May 5th, 2006 5:49:28 AM

Grateful for the assistance provided by his friends, Arm moves to Mira and, putting an arm around her, motions with his sword toward the basement steps, "Shall we?". If she is agreeable, he will advance down the stairs with her, but he will hang back from the battle, if there is one by now.

Conner [AC=19 HP=49/52] Spider Climb  d20+1=20
Friday May 5th, 2006 8:00:13 AM

With the two guards incapacitated, and no immediate threats before him, Conner pauses to assess the situation. "Can someone make sure these two don't bleed out while under our new friends care" he gives the lady in the kitchen his toothiest smile [Sense Motive=20]. "I'm going downstairs to help the others, but you might want to keep an eye on the stairs going up. We don't want any surprises."

With his final caution, the fighter heads down the stairs, repositioning his shield as he goes.

[OOC Conner actually kicked at the guard who had been prone, therefor damage to that guard should be sub-dual]

Shadow
Friday May 5th, 2006 10:22:21 AM

(Round 4) Shadow will move to guard the cultists with Shelya to make sure they do not break for it or do anything to harm his companions.

(Round 5) As the cultists start to see if they can flee, Shadow says, "I would not do that if I were you." He keeps his rapier pointed at the group and will steal a glance to make sure his companions do not nee his assistance.

Seeing that he is now facing two guards (G4 and G5) and angry that Fido was sent back early to his home, Thar will move to ensure that only G4 can attack him from his current position. As he moves, he yells "Little help here, please"

Letting his frustrations rise to the surface, he says to both of the guards (G4/5) "Do you really want to die for these cowardly clerics, who are either cowering or running away? They are ready to let you die here for them!"

As he says this, he'll continue attacking G4 - Att1 - 10, Att2 - 15, Dmg2-7

(sorry, my previous post was entered too early, as I can't see the map. I'm trying to guess on positions and avoid an AoO from G5 while I move.)

ed. DM JohnP - That would be a case of "I forgot to post the map to the website". I normally check the link after making the post but didn't last night. My apologies. I will exercise caution in moving Thar.

Kadaz (AC 21, HP 50/53) & Birdie (AC 17, HP 7/7)  d20+15=18

With the wolf all over the cultist on the floor Kadaz feels safe to leave him behind. He steps over to attack one of the guards attacking Thar. Again, Kadaz swings his flail trying to disarm. However the swing goes wild and misses. (Rolled a natural 3 which is an automatic miss).

On the steps Birdie is looking around growling, ready to snap at anything that puts foot or paw on the step. Nothing is going to take this step from him.
