Baelfred

DM Kathy
Tuesday June 27th, 2006 11:42:53 PM

As a minute goes by and Gerdi's apparition does nothing to harm them, the children seem to grow less afraid--of her, at least. They still look with trepidation at the strange place they find themselves in, and shudder a little at the sound of the flying creatures still outside.

It is Devrin who answer's Any's question. "Gerdi never showed any magical talent that I heard of," he says. "And her parents are ordinary shopkeepers. There's no magic in her family that I know of."

Concerned that he may not be able to cast his magic, Any casts an experimental light on his bow. It works; the tip of his bow glows and adds a warm golden counterpoint to the sickly lavender light outside.

Bralin's healing magic doesn't do any better for Cerina. The minor but stubborn wound remains.

"You are in Fidelia's Realm," the peasant man says. Seeing your puzzled looks he adds. "It is but one of many realms in the world called Koshe-Marr. At least," he adds with a thoughtful frown, "I think that's what the sages call it. We common folk just call it the world, for we know no other."

"The flying things are called Varguilles," he continues. "They've been haunting that ruin as long as anyone knows about. Folk hereabouts know to stay well away from it." As yet another shriek sounds outside, he adds, "They'll give up and return to the ruin soon enough."

Solemnly, he shakes Any's hand. "It's good to meet you, Anthos. I am called Baelfred. The Wold? I do not know the name. Is it another of the Realms of Koshe-Marr?"

"The young ones who were bitten will take no further hurt from their wounds," Baelfred says. "But they will not heal, either, unless the poison is somehow dealt with." He shakes his head. "I have heard that there are mighty healers who can cast such spells, but I have never seen such myself."

At Lorth's question, he looks sorrowful. "Alas, the walking dead are all too common in Fidelia's Realm. This little one was one of yours?"

Harvest, meanwhile, is trying to get Gerdi's ghost, or spirit, or manifestation, or whatever it is, to move on. However, even having known Gerdi for the space of an hour, you all suspect that she's too stubbrn to move on just because she's told to. Indeed, there's a mulish set to her ghostly jaw. "I'm not going anywhere! Where do you want me to go? Out there with those bad head things? I won't! You're just being mean!"

With that, she flees to Kiara, grasping at the older girl's skirts. Her insubstantial hands pass right through. Kiara seems torn between sympathy for the confused little girl and horror for the situation. She settles for kneeling next to the ghostly form and saying with creditable calm, "Now, Gerdi, you hmustn't be rude to Hmistress Harvest. She's only looking out for us."

Arminas climbs the ladder and finds an attic. It covers the area of both downstairs rooms, but the ceiling is very low; Arminas doubts he could stand all the way up even in the center. The space is largely empty, apart from a couple of indistinct lumps in one corner. The walls and ceiling are sturdy, though, and there is no sign that the Varguille creatures have any way of getting in.

Lorth
Wednesday June 28th, 2006 7:51:37 AM

"Baelfred, I am Lorth Jeredosta and I thank you for your help. Alas the child is one of ours." He then turns and goes to kneel near Gerdi's lifeless body.

Not knowing what else to so, as he has never seen the walking dead before, he offers a prayer to Gargul using Gerdi as his focus of concentration...

Lord Gargul, your mysteries are many.
You have taken the child Gerdi from us, as that is your will.
We ask that you allow her to rest, call her to your island and speed her travel through the river.
We ask you not to cause her soul more pain by allowing her to tarry in this world.
She awaits your call.

"The will of Gargul tells us that all who remain in this Wold after their time defy his will, Little Boo. It is Gargul's will that all these be driven to his realm for their own good."

The words of Pasix Mixmindor echo through the halls of Harvest Moon's mind as Paladin Lorth offers his prayer to Gargul. She watches the shade of the little girl as she tries to find comfort in the touch of her old friends. And so indeed, it is for their own good. And yet, she is an innocent. She ...

Harvest turns away overcome by the dilemma. At her side still are Turi and Naki. They bring a smile to her tear stained face, reminding her that there is a duty to the living just as there is a duty to the dead. With a shoulder upon the shoulder of each boy, Harvest rises to her feet.

"Anthos," a last small trembling sigh escapes her and she dabs away some of the wetness on her face with the sleeve of her new outfit, "I must speak to you later ... of responsibilities to those who have passed." Conscious of the children around them, that is all that she says for the moment.

"But we must work to return the children to their homes as soon as possible. Their parents will worry." From her haversack, Harvest draws her book of blank pages. On the first page is her sketch of the route from Jarlwolf to Rowena. She turns to the second page.

"Please Baelfred of Koshe Marr," she extends the book to the man, reaching, at the same time for pen and ink, "could you draw what you know of the shape of Koshe Marr and draw upon it the cities, towns, rivers and other sites of mark that you can place."

Koshe Marr ... Harvest turns the name over in her mind.

"Perhaps with such a map I can identify the direction in which we must travel in order to return to our home."

Any puzzles over the name,Koshe Marr. He tries to recall if he has ever heard this name before in any song, story, or poem that he has heard.

Any is also mindful of how the death of the little girl has affected Harvest. She had been a disciple of Gargul when Any first met her, and this new death has had an impact on her. He takes his spare cloak from his haversack and covers the little girl's body, laying it in one corner of the room.

Looking to the man Baelfred, Any says,

"Is there a city nearby here, someplace where we can find an antidote to this poison in the wounds? Are there wise men there who might tell us how to return to our own home? And finally, are there other dangers of this world that we should be made aware of to make the journey to any city?"

While Any listens to the reply of Baelfred, he also wishes that he could go to Harvest and comfort her, and receive comfort in return, but need says that will have to wait. Solving the riddle of where they are, and how to return home must be foremost in their thoughts.

Florin Jadenth
Wednesday June 28th, 2006 11:44:56 AM

Florin watches what goes on and then looks to the ghost before moving to the child and kneeling as he speaks gently to the ghost, thinking of Jella some and the orphans he had been with not to long ago and wishing to help as best he can, "Gerdi, I know your scared but may we talk for a few moments?"

Florin now looks to Gerdi and begins talking, "You like summer right? the play in the warm sun, the flowers, the green grass between your toes. The feel of the cool water of a stream or lake you go swim in to cool off. Seeing family you don't get to see very often, various picnics and such you get to go to. Well, I will tell you now that when you finally go where your suppose to Gerdi that it will be alot like that there. There will be people there waiting for you, to welcome you and to take care of you. There will be kids to play with and much more. I won't force you to leave and go there but someday you will and till then those family members will be waiting and worried about you."

Florin knows he can't really touch Gerdi but he inless she moves away he reaches up and makes the motion of brushing her hair back, "An when you do, you can watch over all your friends and you can watch over your family. An in their hearts they will hear you and you'll be with them forever."

Florin stands after this and walks away, his blue eyes showing tears that do not fall as he kneels by Gerdi's body for his next motion and he pulls out a pair of silver pieces and places them over Gerdi's eyes and whispers, "When the ferryman comes this will pay the toll to Gargul's land. I pray Domi watches over you and sees you safe."

Florin stands and glances to Harvest and Lorth before speaking since they might not agree with what he has said or done, "I'm sorry if anything I said or done goes against your teachings." Florin moves to a corner and leans against it as he grips his helmet some, he had seen to much death of children lately and shakes his head as he wondered if there would be a day when he would not see such again.

Bralin
Wednesday June 28th, 2006 2:09:56 PM

"Devrin."
Bralin calls the boy over. When he approaches, the dwarf hands him a dagger.
"You may find this useful. Do not lose it."

How to return is the paramount question, and his comrades have asked it. There is no need to repeat them.

The question of the dead girl is more unnerving. Bralin considers. His comrades, he concludes, pursue the wrong path.
"Ye say walking dead are commonplace in Fidelia's Realm," he directs to the man. "What say the priests of Gargul in response? Can they not force the souls to move on?"

He turns to Harvest.
"This innocent should be gone. Her will is no match for the decree of Gargul. Ye say she will not go. I say she cannot. Something in this realm holds her back."

Wednesday June 28th, 2006 11:57:53 PM

Lorth kneels next to the tiny body and offers up a prayer to Gargul. As he prays, he becomes aware that his bond to his god seems....stretched. Gargul's oddly comforting presence is there--somewhere--but at a greater remove than the paladin is accustomed to.

Florin, meanwhile, is talking to Gerdi's spirit. The little girl is receptive to his gentle tone, but there's a puzzled look on her transparent face as he speaks of going to another place and having fun. "But--but I want my friends to be with me," she says, sounding suddenly small and lost. "And I want my mommy." The last word is said with a sob as the ghostly tears begin to fall again.

Florin moves to place coins on the body, a ritual he is familiar with, then Any covers the still form with a cloak. There is nothing else to be done for the moment.

Any believes he has heard of Koshe-Marr, and what he has heard is not encouraging. It is said to be a world of darkness, death, and despair, a plane all but forsaken by the gods, a place of horrors and unspeakable torment.

Harvest realizes that her knowledge of Woldian geography will avail her little, as the party is in another world altogether. She, too, has a vague impression of Koshe-Marr as a place of death and cruelty.

Bralin produces a small dagger and hands it to Devrin. The youngster accepts it solemnly. "I'll do my best," he says.

Arminas pokes at the bundles he saw in the attic. He finds a quantity of dirty, stained, canvas; a few scraps of wood; some bricks and stones; a box of salvaged nails. All are obviously scavenged, and carefully hoarded because they might come in handy someday.

Baelfred takes the ink and parchment from Harvest, but seems at a loss where to begin. Instead, he answers questions from the others.

To Any, he replies: "There are no cities and few towns. And the towns are no place for humans. Trolls and goblins, that's what you'll find in towns. I'll warrant there are some wise men, but they'd all answer to Fidelia. Believe me, you don't want to attract her notice."

"Dangers?" He lets out a mirthless laugh. "We've nothing but dangers here. If it's not the walking dead, it's the goblins and trolls, and if it's not them it's--" he shudders "Fidelia's captains. There's more besides. I've heard tell of a forest of glass, with shards that'll fall and kill you without warning."

"Priests?" he replies to Bralin. "Perhaps Fidelia has priests working for her; I don't know. Certainly there are none among the common folk, or even the trolls. The gods have forsaken this realm, they say."

The children, meanwhile, have grown somewhat calmer. Turi and Naki let go of Harvest, although they stick close. Dolo crosses the room to stand staring at Florin, thoughtfully sucking on two dirty fingers. Lirena climbs the ladder to see what Arminas is doing. Nelle sidles up to Any again. Kiara, evidently needing to keep busy, takes a broom from one corner and begins tidying the little front room. She looks like a miniature adult in her hmanish cap and apron.

Looking thoughtfully around at all of you, Baelfred says, "But you are brave, and you seem to be resourceful. There may be a way for you to return to this Wold place." He glances at the children. "The road is not an easy one, and there are dangers to be faced. But if you win through...you might be able to make it to the Inn."

Taking up the pen, he begins to draw.

Arminas smiles as Lirena climbs to the loft.

"You will make a good scout yet. It is very important to know your surroundings. Look for danger, but also look for places where you can escape the danger. Sometimes running is the best plan, as we just did. Also look for places to hide. Watch me hide here in the attic."

Arminas then moves toward the corner and wraps his elven cloak around him. He looks out, certain that Lirena cannot see him even though he hid in front of her. Instead, he sees Lirena staring at him with a puzzled look. (rolled Nat 1 for hide)

"Umm, sometimes hiding does not work too well. Still, if you are in danger it can be a good strategy."

"Maybe this cloak will help you more than it will me. It helps you hide. Really, here try it on."

Arminas then takes his elven cloak off and wraps it around Lirena.

"When you are in danger, wrap the cloak around yourself and sit very quiet. Try and find a dark place with plants or other distractions, it works much better than an attic."

Arminas then looks around, trying to find Lirena.

"Where have you gone?"

It may be obvious to Lirena that he can still see her, though he tries his best to show he cannot. (also a nat 1 for hide).

"Oh, there you are. If you are in danger, try and hide before the creatures see you. You can also wrap another child in the cloak with you. I will offer myself as a distraction, and lead them away. Hopefully to their death. You can be brave and hide can't you?"

Lorth
Thursday June 29th, 2006 7:38:57 AM

Lorth turns to his friends with a worried look on his face. "I am having problems communing with Gargul, his voice seems far and distant as if his sway over this land is almost non-existant. I fear Bralin is right."

This situation just gets worse and worse Lorth thinks, it isn't enough that they are in another world, seperated from their gods, but they have children to look after in this horrible dangerous world.

Lorth waits patiently for Baelfred to explain to them his idea for getting them home...

Harvest (AC19, HP 41/42)  d20+7=27
Thursday June 29th, 2006 10:13:01 AM

There will be no protecting the children from the truth. They must become adults here, now, in this moment.

"Everyone, please listen." Harvest calls to the others as the man Baelfred continues the map. "Lirena, Arminas Calaelen?" She calls up the ladder. "We are in a dangerous place. Koshe Marr is a land that is uncharted on Woldian maps. But those who have told of it describe it as a place of death and cruelty."

"We may have a way home. But I think that we will come upon many terrible things before we finally reach safe haven. To survive, I believe that we must become as brave as we possibly can and work as a group, protecting one another. It will be very hard sometimes. You must be prepared to think beyond how hard it is and how much things hurt. We will work together, and we will return home together."

"First thing that I think we must do as a group is a decision." Harvest Moon closes her eyes and takes a breath. "Please help me, Anthos." Her eyes open and seek the staunch visage of the bard before returning to the children. "Gerdi has died. The thing that you see before you is her spirit and it has either refused to move on to the realm of Gargul or it cannot. This is a strange land, there are many things that we do not know of it. Gerdi's spirit may be trapped here, and being trapped, suffer. There may be a way here to restore Gerdi's spirit to her body. I do not know."

"I believe, though, that we have the power to banish Gerdi's spirit. To force it to move Beyond. But I also believe with all faith in you, that this is a decision that we must make together. This an adult decision, and you must try to think with the responsibility of adults. But Gerdi was your friend, and so I believe that we must make this decision together." Arminas - 2nd illegal post

Upon Harvest's call, Arminas urges Lirena to descend the ladder and he follows after her.

Lirena wears a cloak that seems to make her blend into the background.

Any [Light]
Thursday June 29th, 2006 10:57:44 AM

Any listens as Harvest talks with the children, explaining their situation.

As Baelfred draws up his map, he asks,

"Do you have water skins, or gourds, that we may purchase from you? And any food which you would be willing to sell, or share, would help as well. And finally, if you had some canvas or heavy cloth, we will make up packs for each child. This journey will not be easy, and we must all share the burden."

He too takes from his boot a dagger and sheath. This he presents to Nelle.

"We will find you some rope if you do not have a belt. I will show you how to care for it. A dull knife is no knife at all."

He then turns to Harvest, gives her shoulders a squeeze, and says,

"Let us prepare as best we can. Perhaps we should spend one night here to allow those with spells to refesh them before we move on. I fear there are many surprizes yet to come in this World. From what I have heard of Koshe Marr, I'm sure that is true."

He then sets about making what preparations he can. When Arminas tells of seeing canvas in the attic, he retrieves it, and begins putting together small bundles for each of the children--if Baelfred does not object.

Florin Jadenth
Thursday June 29th, 2006 2:43:25 PM

Florin kneels by Dolo when he moves over to him and touches his shoulder gently, "You need something?" Florin takes out some of his rations, it consisting mainly of dried meat, nuts and dried berries and gives some to Dolo before moveing to stand by the kids and holding out the pouch of the rations, "I have some food, not much considering but each of you have alittle of it."

Florin moves back to Dolo after this and pulls out his winter blanket and softly places it around the child before motioning to him, "You should rest as all the children should."

Florin hears Harvest and shakes his head as he looks to her and speaks gently as he doesn't want her to become angry at his words, "Harvest. Lorth said Gargul seems far away so I think Gerdi needs to come with us. She is no threat to us or the kids and banishing her in this place could be a very bad idea. We do not even know if she would make it to Gargul's realm if his power is not that strong here. I believe she should come with us for now. After we all are safe, after she sees her friends safe and her family then let us see what happens."

Florin sighs gently, "I know your beliefs are different but I simply ask we wait for now. She is young and new to the life she has now. An I for one might be training to be a undead hunter but I like to think that people like Gerdi and Daphne for that matter have a reason for being here. One that we might not understand. I just prefer if it comes down to banishing her that we do it in good understand of everything. That we didn't make a decision before we know why she is still here for sure."

Florin looks to Bralin and smiles, "I do not know who is leader Bralin but this is a good place to rest and the children and even some of us should get some sleep before moving on. This place can be defended and it might be the only shelter of this sort for sometime."

Florin moves over to Lorth to speak to him in private as he wants to know the man's position on something, "Lorth, as a paladin of Gargul I like to know your opinion on something. I do not want to bury Gerdi's body in this place, not to mention it might upset her if she doesn't understand. We are the only two with a mount that can be summoned so should we use one of our mounts to carry her body till we can bury her some place more fitting?"

Bralin
Thursday June 29th, 2006 5:00:42 PM

Bralin watches the ghost of Gerdi move about. Tis most unnerving. He follows Harvest's logic, and again finds himself disagreeing.

He moves near to Any and Florin, speaking lowly so the children do not hear.
"Harvest means to destroy the undead sprit, as we destroyed Lorth's sire," he intones. "T'was a good deed then, the man was released to Gargul. But here, the chasm to Gargul is great. I know not what may happen to her. Her spirit should attend us to this Inn."

Florin's question has merit, and Bralin deflects the decision to Any. But he does add his opinion again.
"We cast few spells ere now. Whatever resides in this land will soon learn of our presence. We should move as quickly as possible. Do not get pinned down."

Bralin looks around the room, his eyes again coming to a rest on Gerdi's spirit.
This is a most unpleasant realm.

DM Kathy
Friday June 30th, 2006 12:29:12 AM

Lirena watches Arminas with a small smile and eagerly accepts the proffered cloak. She wraps it around herself with a flourish and tosses her tangled curls. "How do I look?" she asks, seeming oblivious to the fact that the whole point is hiding.

Dolo readily accepts Florin's offer of a treat. He chooses a couple of nuts and a dried berry, popping them into his mouth with a slight smile. "You're not afwaid of those fwying things," he says with admiration.

Harvest again considers what she knows about the undead. She believes that this spirit of Gerdi is a ghost. She recalls that spirits become ghosts for any number of reasons, but generally hang onto their incorporeal existence because they somehow feel there is something they have left undone. Perhaps, as Florin suggests, Gerdi simply isn't ready to let go of her life just yet. Perhaps, too, some strange and unnatural effect of this land is making it easier for her to hang on.

Bralin is concerned about Gerdi's remains, and speaks quietly to Florin about what might be done. Lorth reports that his link to Gargul is considerably weaker in this realm.

Harvest calls everyone together and asks for a decision: whether to try to banish Gerdi's spirit.

Gerdi looks puzzled by the question. "What's banish?" she asks. Dolo and Hmanny also seem unfamiliar with the word. The rest of the children glance at one another uneasily, seeming uncertain what to do. "She's just a little kid," Devrin says.

Nelle accepts Any's knife, wrapping her hand around the hilt, which is a bit too big for her. "I-I don't know how to use it," she confesses shyly. "Not for fighting."

Any asks Baelfred about purchasing supplies. "I have little to my name," the peasant man replies, "but I'll outfit us as best I can."

You note that he said "us."

Baelfred finishes drawing and shows you the parchment. His map is crude indeed. "Here is my house," he says, pointing to an X. "Here is the ruined manor." Another X, quite nearby. "The Inn is down here someplace." He points to a rather dauntingly large circle to the south. "We cross this hill," a wavy line, "and then we need to traverse the plains. We'll be exposed," he says, "but the alternative is the crystal forests, and they're far too dangerous."

He hands the map to Harvest. "I'd like to come with you, be your guide," he says. "I'll earn my keep--cook, look after the kids, whatever you need. But please, take me with you. I don't want to stay here. This is no kind of place for humans."

Lorth
Friday June 30th, 2006 8:11:53 AM

Lorth is glad Baelfred wants to come with them, as he was going to suggest that exact thing. "I have no problem with you coming with us, in fact I welcome you.", he says.

To Florin and Bralin:

"I wholeheartedly agree with you Florin, I was trying to think of ways to transport the body, we must take her back to our realm and bury her there if possible. Hopefully you are right and we can, in fact, summon our mounts."

Harvest (AC19, HP 41/42)
Friday June 30th, 2006 9:21:23 AM

"Banish means to send away, Little One." Harvest Moon's voice is calm, but another tear escapes the corner of her eye and rolls down the hills and vales of her face. "I do not wish to send you away, Gerdi. But you have died, and it is best for both the living and the dead that they move on. It is not something that you may understand now. But I hope that you will some day."

"I believe that what you see before us is Gerdi's Ghost." Harvest rises from the little translucent image of the girl and addresses the others. "If this is indeed what she now is, then there is a very real danger in her presence. Paladin Florin, with all respect to your sense of what is good, you speak of knowing things that you do not know. You speak of knowing my beliefs when we met only this afternoon and have spoken fewer than a dozen times together. You say that this spirit is no threat without knowing what it is or what it can do. If this spirit is a ghost then it is most decidedly a threat whether malevolent or not. If the powers of a ghost are released, whether through fear or excitement or a child's uncontrolled anger, they could very likely be the cause of further deaths."

"I am thinking of the others when I consider banishing the spirit. Gerdi has passed on. We must now protect the ones who live. Can we risk a dangerous journey in the company of a powerful spirit that possesses the temperament of a willful child? We may risk our own lives, but will you risk the lives of the children who still live?"

"Unless there are things about this land that make the risk worthwhile. I suspect that there is something about this land that helped Gerdi to resist the draw toward the land of the dead. Perhaps there is something here, some quality that may let us reunite her soul with her body."

"Might there be such a thing, Bralin Stoneminder?" A spark of hope gleams within Harvest Moon's eyes. "You have show a knowledge of this place, Bralin Stoneminder. Is there such a thing? Might there be a way?"

Lirena looks nice in the cloak, yet she seems to be missing the point. Arminas decides it is time to be blunt. He turns to Lirena and grasps her shoulders, looking her in the eye he says:

"How do you look? You look like easy prey for the monsters of this land. Creatures who love to kill. That cloak may protect you if you wear the hood over your head and very quietly hide. Now, do as I say and I will get you home. I will protect you, but you must be alert and do as you are told."

He then gives her a hug, though it is apparent that he is not accustomed to such gestures.

"Lirena, you will have time to play soon enough. You must help me watch and protect the others. Please. Excuse me now, I must look at the map."

Arminas then walks over to Harvest and looks at the map.

"What are the dangers of the plains, and why may I ask is the crystal forest so dangerous. I find typically that a forest is not nearly as dangerous as some folk tend to think."

Any [Light]
Friday June 30th, 2006 10:16:17 AM

Any responds to the several points that have been brought up, saying,

"Baelfred, I too would willingly accept you as a guide an companion in this strange world. Your knowledge will be invaluable to us.

Friend Bralin, I understand the sturdiness of the dwarf, and the desire of the warrior to be moving and avoiding an enemy when possible. However, I also believe that we will need all of our skills if we are to face unknown fears and dangers. Myself, I have used several higher level spells within the last few hours, and to return those spells to my memory, I must rest. If the group as a whole feels that we can travel further today without those spells available, then I will bow to the will of the group. I have my weapons, and will use them for the group as I would at any other time, but we will be a weaker party as a result.

I further agree with Harvest on the matter of Gerdi. All my learning concerning ghosts tells me they are dangerous, even to the point of drawing the life from the living. We should send this spirit to Gargul, but take the body back to her loved ones for burial.

What do you all say?"

He then listens to the others, and what they have to say.

Bralin
Friday June 30th, 2006 1:45:10 PM

Bralin looks to Baelfred. "What say you? We shall increase our power by waiting here one day. Is there risk in this strategy?"

As for the girl, the dwarf takes a cleansing breath, and shakes his head
"I know of no power," he answers Harvest. "Tis not a certianty we e'en possess the power to destroy this spirit. And e'en have we the means, dare we?"

He turns to Any.
"Lorth's sire was killed and enslaved to undeath. In destroying the creature, we released his spirit to Gargul. Twas a gift to free him.
Gerdi was killed, and yet not enslaved. Tis the distance of this realm from Gargul that prevents her release. In destroying her, we will release her spirt to... What? She could not go to Gargul upon her first death. Will she not again fail?

I fear destroying this spirit in this place means destroying her utterly. Her soul irretrievably lost, forever. The risk..."

Bralin is not happy. This place is not right. He takes another cleansing breath.

"We have failed to protect the body. We must protect the spirit."

Florin Jadenth
Friday June 30th, 2006 4:53:00 PM

Florin sighs and looks to Harvest, "I do not wish the argue or fight Harvest. When I said I know our beliefs are different it was my way of saying that I might not understand all of yours and you might not understand all mine. I meant no offense."

Florin nods and comments on what Bralin says, "Her spirit might be a danger to us, possibly but I'm worried at what will be the cost if we banish her. In doing so and if her spirit can't return to Gargul could it cause her to go mad and do exactly the harm you worried about? could we be sending her to a new punishment of sorts with this realm being so different. I simply ask we keep our eyes on her and get her to where Gargul's hold is stronger." Florin thinks and sighs, "If you wish I'll hang back when we move and I'll watch Gerdi. My weapon is magic and if she does anything bad then I will see to it. For the moment I like to believe her spirit is like Daphne's and not a threat to us. Any of you who been to the Giggling Ghost know of Daphne and know she is no evil spirit. My offer stands on watching her though. If you like me and Bralin or Lorth would probably be okay with watching over her but for now I personally say the risks are to heavy to make this decision in this place." Florin takes a deep breath and looks to Harvest and the others, "When I left the Float it was under attack and I seen many orphans get killed and red plant orcs taking people to feed a tree. I seen to much death of kids for my liking and in that time my own adopted child came down with a disease. I will not give up on Gerdi so easy, specially in this forsaken place. I beg you all to allow Gerdi to come and let me and if you wish someone else watch over her for any problems. Right now Gerdi offers some help also as she can not be harmed easily and we have a good scout in some senses."

Florin turns and places a hand on Dolo's should now that he has put his two cents on that matter and nods to the kid, "No, I'm not afraid of the flying things. I can't afford to be afraid when your, your friends and my new friends lives are on the line. Fear will make you hesitate and hesitating can cost them their lives and even your own." He kneels by Dolo and looks into the childs eyes and smiles, "But remember this Dolo. Not being afraid doesn't make someone a hero or even someone to look up to. I do what I believe is right even when the choices can be the hardest to make. That is the courage and that is something to look up to a person for." Florin motions to Harvest and smiles as he speaks, "Harvest might be saying something I don't agree with at the moment but she is someone to look up to for beingable to stand up and voice her views without fear and when what she asks to be considered will be hard to hear but must be said." Florin brushes Dolo's hair gently and smiles, "Your a brave boy too and just as worthy to look up to as any of us as is all the children here, including Gerdi."

Florin thinks and pulls out his holy symbol of Domi since he has the symbol on his shield yet even without the that symbol and places the holy symbol in Dolo's hand, "Keep this near you. I'll get it back once we get you all to safty, it will protect you."

Any (2nd post)

"Your words carry wisdom and conviction Friend Bralin, Friend Florin. I can see your concerns, and understand their source, so let us take the spirit of Gerdi with us for now. If we decide later to change this action, we will be just as able to do so then as now. I only hope we do not regret it. Perhaps having a scout that cannot be hurt, and can walk through walls will be an advantage that will allow us to return home."

He again turns to Harvest,

"My Lady, unless you have further objections that we have not already addressed, can you abide this decision? I know that you know our Lord Gargul perhaps better than any of us. What do you feel of this?"

Harvest (2nd llegal Post)
Saturday July 1st, 2006 5:32:29 PM

The heart within tussles with the head above. Harvest Moon's eyes take in the paladin, his sincerity is not in question. But the heart will go to places where the will cannot bear up.

"There are many people in this Wold, Boo. Some are staunch and reliable. Some are feckless and lacking in judgment. But always remember that how you see them may be a reflection on yourself and not necessarily upon them. Always strive to separate what is real from what is hope and fear." Pasix Mixmindor's words echo within her head. And finally, Harvest Moon nods.

"That will be good," she says. "You will take full responsibility for Gerdi, Paladin Florin. I do not know your Daphne, but please remember that a spirit may not necessarily be Evil to cause harm. Attempt to keep Gerdi at least sixty feet from the other children if at all possible."

"Gerdi, Little One." Harvest kneels. "Paladin Florin will care for you. He will be your champion. Please do as he instructs. We will try to return you to your mother. We will do everything within our power." The little brown monk looks away. The thought will not allow her to look into the eyes of the spirit. One way or another. she thinks. We will return you one way or another.

The party accepts Baelfred as a guide. Any is in favor of resting before proceeding, so that he can recover his spells. Bralin asks Baelfred if there is risk involved in that plan.

"If you need rest, you should rest," the peasant man replies. "The Inn's not going anywhere, nor (unfortunately) are the dangers that lie before us. I suppose there is some small risk that you would be discovered by the trolls or goblins or Fidelia's captains, but I don't think a day is going to make much difference one way or the other.

"Besides," he continues, "I have little in the way of provisions. If we are to undertake a journey, I should probably see if I can buy some food to take with us. That is," he looks uncomfortable. "That is, if any of you folk have a bit of coin to spare."

Florin puts his hand on Dolo's head, and is immediately sorry. Dolo is one dirty, sticky little boy. He also gives Dolo his holy symbol, and the small boy turns it over in his hands. "This is for Domi, wight?" Dolo asks, poking the symbol with one dirty finger. "How come you gots this? I thought you were a fighter."

Arminas speaks sharply to Lirena, trying to get her to understand the desperate situation they are in. Tears fill her lovely blue eyes. "But I'm the prettiest," she says in a very small voice. "Momma always said I'm the prettiest. If I'm not pretty, I'm not anything." She is crying in earnest now.

About the crystal forest, Baelfred explains, "The trees are of crystal, and very sensitive. The smallest noise brings dozens of sharp shards crashing down, each one big enough to kill a man. You don't want to bring the little ones in there."

All that's left now is the much thornier issue of what to do with Gerdi. Lorth believes you should take her body back with you, and Harvest wonders if perhaps her spirit could be reunited with it. The monk is very reluctant to allow the ghost to travel with the group, and Any tends to agree with her. The two of them argue that the spirit should be banished.

Florin and Bralin disagree, and argue against trying to send the little ghost away. In the end, Harvest and Any reluctantly agree.

None of the kids seemed especially eager to banish their former playmate, and there's a general feeling of relief among them when the decision is made. Kiara has found an iron cookpot near the fireplace, and is now washing out as best she can. "I can hmake us some dinner," she volunteers, "if there are supplies."

"Come on, Hmanny," Devrin says, picking up the younger boy. "Let's stay out of your sister's way, hmm? And uh--Gerdi." He's clearly trying to sound normal, but not quite succeeding. "Uh, Gerdi, why don't--why don't you come over here too? We'll--uh--play a game."

Turi and Naki are tugging on Harvest's hands. "I'm glad you didn't send Gerdi away," Naki says.

"Yeah, she's really not that bad," adds Turi. "For a little kid. And a girl."

Arminas (AC 22, HP 29/33)
Monday July 3rd, 2006 1:12:12 AM

Arminas looks at Lirena, who obviously has been brought up in a single dimension.

"Lirena, your beautiful looks are the least important aspect of who you are. You are smart, you can sense when someone is untrue. You are observant, knowing what goes on around you. Most of all you are wise, and know when to brave and strong. Your beauty is without question, yet you know as I do that wisdom will see you through. It is time for brave action, and as I have told you that means staying hidden and not speaking, even when evil creatures are about. The cloak you wear is elven magic. It will protect you, but you must practice hiding. We will spend the night here. We prepare to travel through danger. You must practice your part, hide and wrap another child in the cloak with you."

Looking at the peasant man he adds:
"Baelfred, thanks for agreeing to guide us. I have two days provisons, which can be streched for perhaps 3 children. I can do without for awhile."

Lorth is happy with the outcome about Gerdi and says nothing else. He plans to help Florin carry her remains also, as he doesn't want to bury her here.

"How much coin do you need Baelfred?", Lorth rummages through his pouch and removes a few gold coins and shows them to Baelfred. "I hope these coins can be used in this strange place." He then gives Baelfred whatever he asks for as long as it is reasonable.

He then moves to a corner and finds a spot to put his bedroll and sleeping gear, while dinner is prepared. After setting up his sleeping area he offers it to Cerina, "You can sleep here when you get tired", he says. Lorth will sleep on the floor nearby when he isn't on watch.

Harvest (AC19, HP 41/42)
Monday July 3rd, 2006 9:37:45 AM

Harvest Moon places an arm each around the shoulders of the two brothers.

"I am glad as well, not to have to send Gerdi away. It is very noble of Paladin Florin to have accepted responsibility for her."

"You will care for her, will you not, Paladin Florin?" Harvest Moon's eyes rise from the brothers. They go from the armored knight to the two children who call Gerdi over to play. "With all of the cautions that have been agreed upon?"

"You must take care," she says, returning her attention to Turi and Naki. "That," she points at the spirit, "is not necessarily still Gerdi. It may believe that it is still Gerdi. It may yet still be her. Perhaps it is her soul."

"But we do not know. We only know that Gerdi's soul has left her body. That is what we call Death. That is Gerdi's body. And that is a sort of spirit. And we know that there are many spirits that can cause people harm. So we must be wary. We must take caution not to be in the way of harm, if or when it should come. We must do what is called to Suspend Judgment. That means to watch both sides, prepare for both as equally true, and at the same time always search for the signs that one or the other is not. It is a way of balancing. You know how to balance, do you not?"

"Come," Harvest smiles at the two brothers. "Let us learn more about this land within which we find ourselves. The more one knows, the more able one is to avoid harm when harm comes one's way."

"Master Baelfred," Harvest speaks across the small space to their host, "you have mentioned Fidelia before. You have spoken of this place as Her Realm. Can you tell us more of Fidelia and these Captains of hers?"

"And ... " Harvest Moon frowns. "Your words have implied that this land is unfriendly to Humans. If that is the case, might I ask where it is that you intend to go to buy food? If we are not pressed by constraints of time other than the mounting anxieties of the parents waiting at home, then it may be worth accompanying you to this place in order that we may gain a greater understanding of this land before we attempt this trek."

Any listens to Bealfred as he details the dangers of this land, but that he thinks that it will be safe to stay the night here. He is worried about supplies, so Any says,

"I have enough supplies in my pack for 3 weeks time for one person. That should give us a few days for the group, but I also have coin to buy further supplies, if your realm will accept gold coin from our Wold in payment. We could certainly use some fresher food to supplement my dry trail rations."

He will draw out a single gold coin to show Baelfred,

"I have a few more if you think we will need them."

He listens as the others interact with the children. He has not had much to do with children since he left the troupe, and he finds to his surprize that he has missed this. Perhaps it has come about because of his feelings for Harvest, awakening a part of his soul that he had surpressed. Maybe it is just the natural feelings of protection that comes from an older being to the young. Whatever it is, thinking of the need to protect these young ones reminds him of Nelle.

He calls the young girl to him,

"I would like to show you a few simple tricks for you to use if you are attacked. Leave the dagger in it's sheath so no one gets hurt."

Any then shows her how to hold the dagger, using two hands if necessary, and going slowly he shows her a few basic attack and defense movements with the dagger.

"Of course, if for nothing else, you can always use this blade to chop vegetables."

He smiles at her, and tells her to go play with the other kids, his eyes and ears watching for any signs of danger.

Bralin waits to learn more of Fidelia's realm.

Florin Jadenth
Monday July 3rd, 2006 9:59:56 PM

Florin smiles and cleans his hand with alittle of his waterskins water before looking to Dolo, "I'm a paladin of Domi actually. A fighter and guardian for those who need it, for those who unable to help themselves or know the way. That is my holy symbol, with it I can channel Domi's powers but I have a symbol on my shield which will suffice. For now hang on to it and take care of it as it will do that same for you."

Florin looks to Harvest and nods before looking to Dolo and then Gerdi, "Dolo, why don't you go with Harvest for now, ok?"

Florin looks back to Gerdi as he is still distant from the kids and in one corner of the room and motions to her, "Come over here Gerdi and let us rest." He sits down and looks to Gerdi and thinks about how he become a elf and speaks to her about it, "You know Gerdi, when I was in the Floating City which is a long ways from here I took a chance on a artifact called the knot of Drusis and when I did I died and came back as a elf. It's not like being a ghost but I understand what it's like to die. I hope to help you as best I can, for now I can only offer to get you home and we'll see from there but I will look into helping you more. The temple of Domi are good friends with the temples of Gergul and the one in the Floating City thinks pretty highly of me so maybe I can seek out some help among their orders."

A thoughtful frown is on Lirena's face as she listens to Arminas. It's apparantly a new idea for her, that there might be more to her than her pretty face. She practices wrapping up in the cloak, then she skips over and practices rolling Nelle in it with her. Both girls have a tendency to wiggle too much for effective hiding, but the cloak does help to conceal them.

Lorth looks for a place to set out his bedroll, but the little front room is very crowded with everybody in it. It occurs to the paladin to climb the ladder, and he sees plenty of open attic space. The ceiling is low, but that won't matter to those trying to sleep. He sets out his bedroll and tells Cerina she can use it, but the teenager is in a sulky mood. "I'm not tired," she says with a scowl. Looking over at Kiara, she adds, "She's not the only one who can cook, you know."

Harvest speaks quietly to Turi and Naki, who seem to absorb a bit of what she is saying. "Gerdi's dead?" asks Naki. "Really, truly dead?" "But that's not fair," Turi says. "She's just a little kid and those head things were picking on her. It isn't fair."

Any shows Nelle a few simple moves with the dagger. The young girl shows reasonable coordination, but a real reluctance to use a weapon to hurt anyone. Even with a sheathed dagger, her movements are tentative and over-cautious.

Florin gives Dolo his holy symbol and sends him over to Harvest, where Turi and Naki are demonstrating their balancing skills with enthusiasm.

He then attempts to talk to Gerdi, who seems not to understand. "You didn't die," she says scornfully. "You're here so you didn't die." She scowls. "I didn't die, either," she declares. "I'm here, so I didn't die."

Kiara bustles about with the pot and a wooden spoon she turned up from somewhere. With the rations the party volunteers, and what little Balefred had on hand, she sets about making a stew.

Devrin keeps Hmanny out from underfoot, playing a quiet game with the younger boy.

Baelfred looks dubiously at the gold coins proffered. "Coin is coin," he says, "and I doubt anyone will look twice at it. But this is gold--more money than most folk see in a tenyear. You haven't got anything a bit less...consipicuous, have you?"

"Fidelia is a vampire," Baelfred replies to Harvest. "And a powerful one at that. Her captains are all manner of creatures, vampires and other nasty things. Nothing you'd want to meet, I assure you.

"Towns are dangerous for humans," he continues, "but the trolls and goblins hereabouts know me and probably won't do me harm. Oh, they've cuffed me about for sport, but not often. Usually they've better things to occupy themselves.

"But they don't know you," he says. "You would be interesting and different. They'd take an interest in you, and I don't think we can afford that. Safer for me to go on my own, I think.

"Although it may be that we have enough, with what you folk have brought with you. What say you? Should I chance it, or do we make do with what we have?"

Bralin
Tuesday July 4th, 2006 9:44:00 AM

The dwarf stares at Baelfred, slowly digesting the man's last words.

Tis a land ruled by the undead, out of the reach of Gargul. Mayhap out of reach of any god. A new quest is upon them. Get out.

He reaches into his pouch and hands the man four copper pieces.

"We will set watch," he states. "I will take second."

Harvest (AC19, HP 41/42)
Tuesday July 4th, 2006 9:56:23 AM

"Yes, really and truly she is dead. At least in as far as I am familiar with Death." Harvest watches Turi and Naki as they give an exhibition of balancing. "Please, come join us, Dolo. We are speaking of Gerdi."

"All of the things of her body that keep it alive are no longer working. That is one way that we see death. And you are right. It is not fair. It is terrible. And it is tragic. But, most importantly, it *is*. The situation is here before us, and until we are able to change things, it is not going away. And even before we can attempt to change things, we must accept the way they are."

"Do you hear, Naki, Turi, Dolo? Fidelia is a vampire. We are now in a land ruled by a powerful vampire. We must take extra care here. The undead hold great sway here no doubt." Harvest turns another look of concern in Gerdi's direction. Only fragments of her conversation with Paladin Florin drift to her ears, but the tone does not sound promising. The Paladin of Domi may have difficulty with the Little One.

"Master Baelfred," Harvest reaches into her pouch, "if you require, here are coins of a simpler denomination." She passes the man nine copper coins. "Please, take all precautions. Do not risk yourself. Remember that returning yourself unharmed is more important than securing supplies."

"Thank you for your help and your bravery," Harvest Moon confers a smile upon the man as the simple brown coins clink into the palm of his hand.

Bralin, Harvest, and Any hand over some copper pieces, which Baelfred gladly accepts. He gives back the gold pieces to those who offered them. "I'll nip out and see what I can get," he says. "That way we'll be ready to go once you've all rested."

"But I'll have supper ready in just a bit," Kiara says. "Won't you stay and eat with us?"

"No thank you, my dear," Baelfred replies with a smile. "I shall find something in town. Share your meal with your friends; I'll be fine." With that, he departs.

Any gets the feeling that Baelfred is hiding something.

Harvest speaks to Turi, Naki, and Dolo about the dangers of the vampire. Dolo turns over the symbol of Domi in his hands, looking thoughtful. "Fwowin will pwotect us fwom vampires," he says confidently.

Turi says, "we should learn how to protect ourselves, too. Can you show us how to fight like you, Mistress Harvest? With a chain?"

Arminas has a look at the loft, and also believes it is a good place for the children to sleep. Indeed, the entire party could fit up there comfortably, as long as nobody was particularly attached to standing up straight in the middle of the night.

Florin asks Gerdi about her parents, and her mood shifts from belligerent to sad. "I miss my mommy," she says, lower lip wobbling. "Mommy is nice and takes care of me. She and Daddy let me go to school even though I was only five." Lowering her voice to a conspiritorial tone, she adds, "You're 'posed to be six."

Nelle and Lirena join Devrin and Hmanny in their game. Devrin is keeping the younger kids occupied, sneaking occasional glances at what's going on among the grown-ups. Kiara sets the stew to simmering, and begins tidying the hearth area.

"You're just showing off," Cerina tells her loftily. "'ooh, look at me, I'm a perfect little helper.'"

"I'm hnot showing off," Kiara protests.

"You are, too," Cerina retorts. "Little Miss Perfect."

"Hey, Cerina," Devrin says, apparantly trying to break up the impending fight. "Can you give me a hand with the little kids?"

"Why do I have to do everything?" Cerina snaps. "I watched them after the cave-in; it's somebody else's turn." She turns back to Kiara. "I'll bet your stew is really rotten!"

Any [Light]
Wednesday July 5th, 2006 10:16:48 AM

Any feels strongly that Baelfred is lying or concealing something from the group. Once their erstwhile guide leaves, he relays this information to the others.

"It strikes me as strange that in a place that is as harsh as this one seems to be, this man is alone. You would think that if humans were as rare as he says, that they would seek each other out for protection and companionship. Perhaps I am being overly cautious, but I don't want to lose any more members of our little band. I just feel that caution is called for, and we should each be on guard. Let us set standard watches through the night. I would be happy to take first watch."

Now that they are settled in, with relative safety, Any moves over to Harvest,

"Let me see your wound. Does it feel infected, or poisoned? Do you think that any of those bitten need a poultice, or will just cleaning and binding be enough?"

Any will bring out some bandages to wrap any wounds, and herbs to make a poultice if needed, moving from person to person untill all are taken care of.

Harvest (AC19, HP 41/42)
Wednesday July 5th, 2006 11:41:11 AM

"Thank you, Anthos." Harvest Moon's hand gently touches that of the bard. "There was poison, but my body was able to reject its effects."

Standing from amidst the three boys, she turns to the door through which their host had just gone.

"More important, if you have suspicions about Master Baelfred, Anthos, it may be best to follow him."

Harvest Moon picks her haversack up off the ground and begins working her arms into the straps. She listens for the sounds of the Flying Skulls outside.

"I am sorry, Naki, Turi. Combat lessons may need wait until a later time." She stops and turns to them, taking in Dolo as well. "But think on this in the meantime. Life itself is teaching all the time. The wise man knows to open his eyes and receive these lessons. In this way, his wisdom grows. When I return, please tell me one lesson that you have learned from looking at life around you."

"Anthos, we would be in a very bad position should Master Baelfred betray us to forces of any reasonable size. We would be trapped within this house with little idea of where to flee to should we need to do such." From her haversack she removes the book of maps. "We can only hope that this drawing is not a deception as well. Please decide to where we might go, should we need to move on a moment's notice."

"I will attempt to follow Master Baelfred from positions of concealment. If I discover that aught is amiss, I will return with all haste and we will need to flee. On our own."

"Arminas Calaelen, would you accompany me? Together we may stand a greater chance of seeing without being seen."

"Yes Harvest, we will follow him. If he means to decieve, he must be silenced. Lirena, I need to borrow my cloak for just a short time. I will wrap you in it again before you venture outside."

Arminas then gently removes the cloak from Lirena and wraps it around himself.

"Quickly, let us go before he has gone too far."

Arminas opens the door and quietly steps outside.

Bralin watches stonily as Harvest and Arminas leave in pursuit of Baelford. His eyes seek out and meet those of Lorth and Florin.
Tis a mistake. We should leave.

The arguing of the children assault the dwarves' ears.

He walks over towards Devrin, stopping a few feet from Cerina. He pulls out his massive war axe and a whetstone. Very slowly, very deliberately, and very loudly, the dwarf draws the whetstone along the edge of the blade.

Stone shrieks against the metal blade. Once. Twice. Three times.
Bralin speaks. His tone is calm and deliberate. His bass voice pitched lowely, so that one must pay attention to hear his words.

"Children. Ye are not in the cave, nor at home. This is a place of danger. Be silent, be careful, be attentive, and ye will get home.
Do not ..."
The dwarf's eyes lock on Cerina. He cannot be any more serious.
"... and we will all die."

"Bralin, I am not sure that waiting in this house is safe any longer. We are safe from the Skull things, but with the windows and doors covered, we cannot see what else might be coming at us. I feel we need to scout the surrounding area, perhaps look for a better place to stay, but definitely look for an escape route that will give us some concealment, and that we can follow in light or dark. What say you? Shall you and I scout the area while we still have light? Lorth and Florin, can you safeguard the children while we check out options?"

Then turning to the children,

"All of you. We need your help. Each of us must put our own concerns away for the moment, and help each other out. If the older children will help the younger, and all of you eat your supper, Bralin and I will be back. If we decide to move, we will all need to work together to help."

Lorth chooses to ignore Cerina's snarkiness. Bralin takes a more direct approach, sitting right next to the teen and sharpening his axe at her. With a few well-chosen words, the dwarf reminds them all of their dangerous situation.

Cerina subsides, sitting with crossed arms and a sulky expression.

Any shares his concerns about Baelfred with the party, and suggests that caution is called for. He looks at Harvest's wound, but she has successfully fought off the poisin. Only Cerina and Lerina still show its effects.

Harvest is keen to follow Baelfred and see what he is really up to, so she tasks Turi and Naki with an assignment, and requests Arminas's help.

The boys' distress is evident. "You're giving us homework?" Naki says disbelievingly.

Arminas also believes following Baelfred is a good idea, so he and Harvest set out, doing their best to remain unseen.

[OOC: at what distance are you following?]

Not to be outdone, Any proposes that he and Bralin scout the area, leaving Lorth and Florin to watch over the children.

[OOC: if you leave, tell me roughly where you go and what you're looking for.]

Nice as it is to have four walls around them again, the children seem uneasy that so many of the adults are leaving. Dolo is pleased to be staying with "Fwowin," but the others watch unhappily as four of the six adventurers leave the house. Nelle hurries up to Arm. "Come back soon, okay?" she says anxiously.

Ghostly Gerdi wanders over to join the game that Devrin and Hmanny are playing, only to grow cross when she can't pick up the twigs. "Let's do something else instead," Devrin says, whisking the twigs away. He leads the younger kids in a little song about the gods. It's a teaching song, designed to acquaint kids with the basics of each god's powers, and it sounds oddly comforting in this strange, harsh world.

Lorth nods to Bralin, "I will stay and watch our charges while you and Any have a look around. I'll go right outside the front door every few minutes to listen for you if you need help, otherwise I will stay inside."

Lorth also feels uneasy about the whole situation, he will be happy once the group is on the move.

Any pulls a piece of cloth over the end of his bow, to keep the glow emanating from it from attracting unwanted attention. Then, stepping out the front door with Bralin, he stops in the shadows of the eaves to look carefully around before continuing. His sword and dagger are in his hands. Recalling the rough map drawn by Baelfred, he says,

"Bralin, perhaps we should assume that our guide was telling some truth, and explore first along his porposed route."

So saying, he begins to follow the direction Baelfred had indicated they would need to go. He is looking for the easiest path, places of concealment, sources of water, and a possible place for the party to take refuge other than the house. He moves as silently as possible, but this is probably a moot point with the dwarf clanking along with him. He stays alert for danger, and they will turn back when the light begins to fade, if they have not found a safer haven before then.

Harvest Moon peers from the doorway looking for signs of their departed host Baelfred.

"You should lead, Arminas Calaelen. Determine our path and I will follow, watching for danger as you chart our way of concealment."

"Life and living is homework," Harvest smiles and turns upon the balls of her feet to deliver parting words before leaving through the doorway. "And not all homework need be onerous. There are many good and useful things that you already know. You must simple think of them, acknowledge that they are there, and cease to take them for granted. After that, I think you will find that they work for you in ways you had not previously imagined."

Answer to Question
It's hard to say how far we wish to follow as it is hard to determine how close we *can* safely follow.
Given the degree of cover that the terrain provides and the lighting conditions, as close as possible without being detected.
Preferably at some 100 to 120 feet to provide a decent chance to overhear a reasonably pitched conversation that Baelfred might have with anyone he should meet.

Florin hopes she might understand since she did walk through a wall earlier, "Just try and relax, ok?"

Harvest and Arminas set off after Baelfred. The man walks purposefully at first, but after a time you see him start to slow. He looks around. Finally he turns around and looks right at you. He changes direction and comes toward you, looking around him as if trying to see whether anyone else is watching. "My friends," he says when he gets to you, keeping his voice low, "I cannot advise this. My little house is humble, but believe me when I say it is safer than the surrounding countryside. Please, go back and await my return."

Bralin and Any begin scouting the route the group must travel. You find more of the oddly pale, spindly vegetation. Some of it is in neat rows, as if it had been planted. The flap of leathery wings startles you for a moment, but you quickly realize it is a lone birdlike creature, and not another pack of the flying heads come to finish you off. You have come about a half-mile so far, and have seen no signs of anything untoward.

Back at the house, Lorth remains on alert, checking the door periodically for signs of danger. So far, though, all is quiet. Florin tries to make sure Gerdi stays calm, and asks Devrin to keep the singing to a low volume. After the next little song, though, the younster switches to a guessing game. Like the singing, it's something that ghost-Gerdi can participate in, but it's less likely to make noise and draw attention.

Delicious smells coming from the fireplace area indicate that the stew is just about ready. Kiara is looking about the front room with a puzzled frown. "I can't find any bowls," she says. "Hno utensils, either, apart from this." She waves the wooden spoon. "Do you perhaps have something in your gear?" she asks the paladins hopefully.

Harvest Moon carefully takes the measure of the surroundings before stepping from concealment and approaching the man.

"I offer apologies for our lack of trust, Master Baelfred." Harvest inclines her head, a gesture commiserate with her overture of atonement. "But in all honesty we thought it unusual that you should live alone in what appears to be such a dangerous land. The children are precious to us, I hope you understand, and we must take all precautions to guard against things that may present even the slightest chance of danger. I know that it is mean spirited of us to betray the trust of our host in this way, I know, but we cannot take such a risk knowing what may be at stake."

As Harvest Moon steps word by word through her apology, she observes the man, taking his measure in as thorough a manner as she had the terrain just moments before.

"Our own safety means little when compared to that of the children. Please allow Arminas Calaelen and I to accompany you, even if some distance behind from a place of concealment. It would offer you some degree of protection as well as greatly easing our minds."

Sunday July 9th, 2006 11:07:58 PM

Bralin and Any come to the conclusion that if there are dangers on their journey, they won't be found in the immediate vicinity of Baelfred's house. They turn around and head back the way they came.

Back at the house, Kiara takes the pot off the fire. Since neither Lorth nor Florin has eating implements, the kids awkwardly begin to share the stew using the single wooden cooking spoon. It's a chaotic but largely peaceful scene; the older kids have instinctively begun helping the younger ones. Gerdi, fortunately, has decided she is not hungry so doesn't try to handle the spoon. Instead, she flits around Devrin and Cerina, demanding that they continue the guessing game. They do their best, but they are hungry too and keep pausing for bites of stew.

Kiara offers some stew to the two paladins as well. It proves to be quite flavorful. The dried meat hasn't had quite enough time to become tender, but Kiara seems to have used it only for flavoring anyway. The vegetables and mushrooms are plentiful and cooked just right.

Harvest and Arminas, discovered by Baelfred, request to accompany him. Baelfred sighs. "I must advise against you coming along," he says. "There is too great a risk. The trolls could decide to hurt you just for sport--or worse, they could decide to turn you over to Fidelia's forces."

Concentrating carefully, Harvest gets the impression that Baelfred is genuinely concerned for their safety.

"If you want to remain hidden, and accompany me that way, then I suppose you can, if you must," he continues. "But I would respectfully suggest that Master Arminas undertake this task by himself. I spotted Mistress Harvest easily, and if I could do it, I fear the trolls and goblins could do it as well."

"If that is not acceptable," he finishes, "then let us return to my house. We can make do with the provisions we have."

He reaches into his pack and brings out a small brass cook pot, a bowl, a cup, and 2 more spoons. These are shared around to make eating a little simpler. He waits untill the children have all had their fill before he takes any of the stew. In the meantime he keeps a watch at the door.

"I wonder how Harvest and Arminas are faring. I hope I am wrong about Baelfred, but I did receive a strong impression that he was not being truthful with us."

Once all have eaten, he will help clean up, and then make sure that all of the children have a place to sleep for the night. Better to do this now while it is light, than to wait untill it is time to turn in, and have to do this in the dark.

"But allow me to ask of both of you, Arminas Calaelen for your expertise in stealth, and Master Baelfred for your knowledge of this land, would five score feet provide me with enough distance to safely follow? I have a spell with which Arminas Calaelen and I might speak without being heard. It would allow me to follow at a distance from him while he follows at a distance from you, Master Baelfred."

Bralin returns with Any to the small cottage. While pleased there are no immediate dangers in the vicinity, the dwarf does note there is no immediate cover, either.

Entering the cottage, he barely even notices the issue of utensils until Any breaks out cooking gear and Florin makes his comment. Bralin frowns for a moment, trying to remember something. The thought comes to him, and he activates a Seal on his belt. Instantly, a plate, napkin, fork, spoon, and butter knife appear before him.

The dwarf allows the children to utilize the cookery, and waits for them to eat their fill. Once they are done, Bralin helps himself to a used spoon and eats just enough to curb his appetite. Satisfied, he belches loudly in appreciation and moves to the door, which he cracks open, to keep watch.

Eating supper becomes quite a bit easier after Any and Bralin return to Baelfred's house. Any pulls out his mess kit, sharing out his bowl, pot, and spoons. Bralin breaks a seal and a full place setting magically appears, much to the delight of the children.

"How did you do that, Master Bralin?" asks Devrin admiringly. "It seems a very useful spell; I shall have to learn it before I become an adventurer."

Nearly all of the children, even the full ones, want to eat at least a bite or two of the stew using the "magic" implements. Because it is late, and tempers are frayed after a long day, there are some quarrels.

"It's time you kids were in bed," says Cerina, with all the lofty authority of a fourteen-year-old. Cries of protest greet her words.

"No fair!" says Naki.

"I'm not sweepy!" Dolo insists.

"I want to wait for Master Arminas," says Lirena.

Devrin smiles winningly at the younger kids. "We can wait up until the others get back," he says. "But let's get all ready for bed and go up to the loft and lie down. Then I'll tell you a story while we're waiting."

With a wink at the adults, Devrin leads the younger children up the ladder. Turi and Naki insist on staying downstairs to wait for Harvest, and Kiara doesn't want to leave until the supper things are cleaned up. Cerina clearly feels it is her right to stay up with the adults. The other kids, however, go up with Devrin. Even ghostly Gerdi drifts up the ladder, keen to hear the story.

The adventurers wait until after the kids have eaten before enjoying their own stew. There's plenty left for them, and it's quite tasty. Indeed, there's more left in the pot for Harvest and Arminas, when they get back.

Meanwhile, Baelfred reluctantly agrees to Harvest's suggestion. "Just be careful, Mistress," he advises. "If the trolls catch sight of you--either one of you," he adds, looking over at Arminas, "then I doubt I'll be able to do anything for you."

So you follow him as he sets out again, Arminas maintaining their original distance of about 100 feet, and Harvest farther back. All told, you walk about three miles with Baelfred, and then you see him enter a filthy, ramshackle village. The buildings of the village are oddly sized, and several seem about ready to collapse into heaps of random materials. A pall of smoke hangs over the rooftops, and the smell is unbelievable.

Baelfred does not linger long in town, and soon rejoins the adventurers, carrying a small, well-filled sack. "We'd best hurry back," he says. "The moon'll set soon."

Any lights a lantern, and the tiny front room of Baelfred's house is faintly lit by its glow. Any, Florin, and Lorth take turns watching out the door, waiting for the others to return.

The antics of the children have raised a rare smile from Bralin, but now the dwarf resumes his stoic demeanor and takes himself off to a corner to sleep. The front room is small enough that there really aren't any "out of the way" corners, but the others manage not to trip over him too often.

Kiara sweeps the hearth, banks the fire, and cleans up the remaining utensils. Cerina moves to sit next to Lorth.

The house is quiet, and you can hear from up above the sound of Devrin telling his story to the younger children. It's a well-known folk tale, but Devrin tells it well, using different voices for different characters, making the younger kids giggle and gasp by turns.

Then Turi and Naki, who had been conversing quietly in the front room, suddenly erupt into a quarrel.

"Did not!"

"Did so!"

"Did not!"

"You're so stupid!"

"No, you're stupid!"

They're punctuating their remarks with little shoves, now, and it seems that a full-on fight is just a breath away.

It is to this scene that Arminas, Harvest, and Baelfred return. You had an uneventful walk from town, marked only by the setting of the odd lavender moon. Without its sickly light, the surrounding countryside looked even darker and stranger than usual. Under the circumstances, returning to Baelfred's house is oddly comforting.

Turi and Naki interrupt their quarrel. "Mistress Harvest! You're back!"

Dishcloth in hand, Kiara gives the new arrivals a shy smile. "I saved some stew for you."

Harvest (AC19, HP 41/42)  d20+5=24
Wednesday July 12th, 2006 10:38:39 AM

Harvest Moon says nothing at first as she comes upon the scene of conflict between the two brothers Turi and Naki. Instead, rather, she raises a single questioning eyebrow.

"Please, continue," Harvest says at last. "But be aware that I will be observing your technique. And please try to fight quietly." She points to Bralin Stoneminder asleep in the corner.

"Thank you, Kiara," Harvest says to the Hmanas girl. "I will be there shortly."

"Anthos," Harvest seats her self close to the bard and speaks in soft low tones, "I am pleased to say that Master Baelfred appears sincere in his desire to aide us. But it is a terrible land out there. Those who live here reside in squallor worse than many camps in the Contested Kingdoms. I fear for us all should we be here long. I will eat and then rest. It will be good to be on our way tomorrow."

"This smells quite delicious, Kiara." Harvest smiles and brushes the crest of hair from out of her eyes. She looks down at the bounty of vegetables and mushrooms scavenged from the land. And then a quiet look comes over her face.

"What supplies did you acquire in the village, Master Baelfred?" she asks. "Is the food from the land here safe for consumption?" Harvest spreads her hands in the fan-shaped symbol of Alemi and then passes the palm of one hand over the bowl of stew.

Wednesday July 12th, 2006 11:47:34 AM

Arminas steps inside the cottage to the smell of stew. He walks over and eats a small portion.

He then addresses Harvest and Any:
"We know that Baelfred has succeeded in obtaining provisions. I did not see anyone follow us, but that does not mean that someone does not have directions to this place and know that we are here. Since the treachery of the elves who sold us into slavery to Parnoth, I do not trust anyone. Perhaps we shoud set up watch to warn of someone coming to the house. What do you think?"

Florin listens to what is said and frowns some while thinking, "Excuse me for asking Arminas, I know little of your past so what is this about the elves you had dealings with? I do not mean to bring up a bad memory but any info on what I might have to expect do to being a elf now would be helpful. Do alot of people seem to resent or hate the elves now?"

Florin thinks and nods some, "I know in the Floating City we ran into a hidden elven village in the Crying Woods that sided mostly anyway with the Fey King so some of the Float were against elves also. Being a human at the time I didn't join in on their song or whatever it was to him and was actually rather against it after the info we had recieved. Anyway, any info would be nice on that likes and dislikes in the areas you been or possibly going back too."

Florin stretches some as he relaxes against a wall some before speaking again, "On the matter of keeping watch for trouble I agree with your plans. Creatures native to this land would probably beable to move easier and hidden better then any of us could expect except our guide who seems to know the area. We deffinetly should wake everyone early morning to move out but this is not my decision and the leader of this group."

Florin also looks to Harvest, waiting patiently for her to talk to Any before speaking gently to her as he doesn't want to possibly issue a fight with her, "Miss Harvest. I was hoping if sometime at a better chance you might beable to tell me more of your god Gargul. Domi and him are suppose to be on good terms so knowing more of a god of such standing would be nice to know." Florin offers his hand to Harvest for a simple friendly hand shake, "I look forward to when we may talk on that."

Florin now looks to Any, right now he just trying to get to know more about those of the group also since he is still relatively new to the group, "Excuse me Any. I was curious, you are a bard right? No offense meant but if you are and I'm not miss guessing I was wondering if you knew any elven songs? As I said before, I like to learn more of the elven people and music is something that is strongly tied to many races and many religions."

Florin hopes he isn't annoying everyone with his questions but he hopes to get a better grasp of things and of the elven traditions and such.

(OOC:Sorry about the post. Just figure I really should play on Florin's need to know more of the place, the group and of being a elf considering.)

Any begins dishing out stew for the three latecomers, but Baelfred shakes his head. "I got a bite in town," he says. "It smells delicious, but I won't deprive the rest of you."

Harvest sits down to eat, but does a discreet spell to determine whether the food is safe. She detects no hint of poison.

In response to her questions, Baelfred holds the bag open, shaking it a bit so the rest of you can see the contents. There are many varieties of mushrooms, and some odd, pale vegetables you can't identify. There is also a smaller sack. "I got fleshroots and silverleaf," he says. "And plenty of mushrooms and a bit of ghaan flour. Though I'm not sure what we'll do with it."

Turi and Naki seem disinclined to fight now that the others are back. "We're not mad anymore," Naki explains, using the "adults-are-so-stupid" tone. They start chasing each other around the small room, laughing. They're making a fair bit of noise, but not enough to compete with Bralin's snores.

Arminas advises caution, and Florin takes the opportunity to try to find out a bit more about elves.

"C'mon, you two," Cerina says to Turi and Naki. "Mistress Harvest is back safely, and it's time we went up and got some sleep."

The boys protest, but Turi's enormous yawn spoils their arguments that they're not sleepy. After a bit of coaxing, they scramble up the ladder.

Cerina helps Kiara clean up, then the two girls also climb up to the loft. Baelfred bids you good night and retires to his partitioned-off bedroom. The adventurers are left in the front room.

It is dark outside, and the lantern is deliberately turned low, so there is little light within. Upstairs are the small shufflings and high-pitched murmurs of a gaggle of children trying to sleep without beds. From Balefred's chamber there is no sound. And from the corner is the sound of a snoring dwarf. Outside, there is a faint keening. The wind? Or some unknown creature, off in the distance? Difficult to say.

Lorth
Thursday July 13th, 2006 9:00:57 AM

Lorth gets his sleep when he isn't on watch. He doesn't say anything to anyone trying to focus on the journey they will have to attempt in the morning.
(Do we heal any overnight, sleeping in this area?)

Any listens to Harvest's report of what has transpired. When she id done speaking, Florin asks Any about his profession.

"Friend Florin, I have indeed followed the profession of Bard, and I do know many elven songs. However, I am not the best person to tell you more about being an elf. I am only half-elf--my mother being human--and I was raised by her away from the elven regions. I learned what I could of elves, including their language, but I have never lived among the sylvan races, just performed for them on occasion. I did partake of the peculiar vision on the waking of the Fey King, but honestly did not know much of his story that I had not learned from the songs and lays that I sing. I hope you are not too disappointed. I could sing you many of the songs of the elves, but perhaps now is not the best time, with the children just going off to sleep. Perhaps another night."

Any then continues with his watch, inviting Harvest to join him, then waking the next watch before retiring to one of the corners of the main room to sleep.

Thursday July 13th, 2006 12:09:26 PM

Harvest smiles as the boys, upon being watched, cease their quarrel. Though, in truth, to have begun training in hand to hand combat at this time would not have been an entirely bad thing. And it would be a constructive outlet for their energies that would occupy them for many years to come. They would be ready sparing partners for each other.

"I no longer follow Gargul, Paladin Florin," the small brown girl replies. "I was raised in Gargul's teachings. He is a dour god, steeped in sadness and necessity. But I have since followed a different path. I walk with Alemi now. It was a time of change." She looks in the direction of Arminas Calaelen. "And betrayal and bravery." Harvest grows quiet as the image of Drosera comes to her. One hand severed from her arm, she had given her life that they might escape Parnoth's gaol.

"Perhaps we can speak of this more later."

Harvest takes a bowl of stew and settles beside Anthos. She brushes the crest of hair from her eyes before taking a spoonful of the savory stew. A tiny smile touches her lips. The stew is good. But for the main, Harvest Moon's thoughts are far away, into the future, staring out at the journey that they face on the morrow across the dark land lit by the lavender moon.

Before she is aware, the stew is gone. Harvest puts the bowl aside and then nestles into the crook of Any's arm. They would wake for their watch. And then, come the new day, they would see what Koshe Marr would bring.

Bralin sleeps until woken for his shift. The dwarf's eyes snap open, as he is instantly awake. With a wordless nod, he clomps over to the cottage door and steps through it.

Bralin keeps a tense watch. He doesn't trust this place. It reeks of danger. The dwarf keeps the door ajar, and his axe in hand.

He makes no move to investigate any strange noises, refusing to be lured away from his charges.

Florin relaxes and will get some sleep when he can. He will take his turn at taking watch with or without a partner depending on what the group has decided about team watches.

In the morning inless something happens, Florin will kneel and pray to Domi, placing his shield with the symbol of Domi facing him as he does. After this Florin if he has room enough to will practice with his longsword for a moment and greatsword to, even going outside if he has to and if it is ok.
