Just Because You're Paranoid...

Welcome to Little Notting (DM Jay B)
Tuesday July 11th, 2006 10:37:08 AM

As you pass through the tapestry, you are immediately hit with moist, cool air and the mild smell of peat.

It is fall and harvest just taken place. The smell of apples and milled wheat fills the air. It is dusk and the moon and sun both occupy the sky. The sun sinks into the crimson and deep blue horizon. The stars begin to wink through the clouds. A golden halo of glittering dust hugs the moon and the land which you are standing together into a warm embrace. The halo is something to behold, a beauty which is not seen in the Wold.
It is overcast but the moon is waxing and will be full in about 9 days.

(Please make a Survival check, druids please make a Wisdom check)

You have arrived on a bend in the road near the perimeter of a darkening forest. In the distance are the lights of a small village. A sign nearby reads:

LITTLE NOTTING
. 25 miles
"Welcome and may the light of whichever God you worship guide your way."

Toward the center town is a prominent hill and atop it is perched a large Manor. There are no lights apparently on in the residence, which, even to you, seems odd.

Then, suddenly, an otherworldly sound rents the air. The howls of delight from several men and the nay of horses can be heard just before they are seen rounding the corner baring down on you. They are just 60 feet ahead of you.

Two riders and their horses in barding are chasing a merchant's cart whose driver is slumped to one side, an arrow can be seen clearly in this light protruding from his shoulder, but he seems to be conscious and heading for town. A second look at the pursuers reveals that one is carrying a short bow, the other carrying a torch. The light from the torch puts the riders reptilian faces into sharp relief. The riders are standing in the stirrups to allow for their long tails to freely hang behind. The one with the bow skillfully aims and fires at the horse, just missing. The one with the torch seems to be casting something when it sees you ahead and redirects its spell. The intent is obvious, no one is getting in their way!

Spellcraft check DC 16 reveals it is Entangle, druids know this spell VERY well.

Lenoir is sitting on his horse,"Well! Well! Looks like some one is looking for a fight!"

Lenoir takes his bow, knok it and will fire at the magic user, (Attack Ac 22 - Damages 10hp). Lenoir is hoping to distrect the spell carter.

If he has enought time he'll get off his horse.

"Hold, good Lenoir, and do not fire again until we know who is the villain here! Maybe the man on the cart is a theif, and those are constables!"

Gentian calls out loudly, "Stop! Stop fleeing! Stop attacking! We will see justice done here in the name of all that is good!" [Diplomacy check 23 woo hoo]

"Stop! Or we will attack!"

Gentian remains mounted and directs his loyal riding dog to move so that he has a clear path to charge at the reptilian archer, if needed.

Poe enters the new place with a deep breath of the peat air; hearty and rich and thick. He scratches at his bald chin and then strokes each side of his dragon-fang looking mutton chops, bringing the hair back into two nice points.

A quick beat is produced on a drum-like object hanging from the left side of his waist;

::tick :: tack :: thump da dump::

Sliding out of the closing portal from the Giggling Ghost is a dog standing about two feet high with a auburnish fur highlighted with grey and white streaks; the rest of the dog's coat is of a wiry hair about an inch or two in length and mottled with liver, grey and auburn coloring over a darker grey undercoat. Its eyes are a pale green, almost identical to Poe's.

"I think that both uvya should relax just slightly. It is never a good idea to roll into an unknown village or city with blood already upon us. Fer all we know this place could be of primarily reptilian species."

Poe stands, nonchalantly, scratching behind the wirehaired dog's ears. Absentmindedly he taps the head of his drum with feather-light touches creating an almost inaudible sound.

"Thur be many a story I can tell that start with taking sides, unknowingly of course, with the wrong one at the outskirts of a village." a slight chuckle rumbles from the belly of the dwarf. "Most end in typical fashion...death that is."

Watching as the careening caravan cruises by, Poe leans in as close as possible to hear what the lizard-men are saying. He tries to piece together the scenario as best as possible but cannot fathom what is happening in this new place. His ears pick up the sounds of arcanum and quickly if not deer-like he begins a quick-footed dance to try and work his way outside of the entangle spell's area. The same beat of the drum is produced and Poe's dog darts as well

Looking about his surroundings he tries to determine if this type of climate is normal for lizard races.

Stepping onto the scenic road, Calor looks about with curiosity.
"Neat," he exclaims, adjusting the bow on his back.
[Survival: 9]

The brown haired man is about to introduce himself to his new companions, but is stopped by the ensuing commotion.

The fighter chooses to attack, the halfling chooses to parlay, and the dwarf chooses to - Calor isn't real sure what the dwarf is doing.
He IS sure he's getting attacked.
[Spellcraft 24]
"That's an Entangle spell he's casting. He wants to trap us all!" he calls out.

Hoping to avoid the area of effect, the man launches himself toward the caster and his companion.
[Move 60', toward and just outside the spellcaster, so that spellcaster is between Calor and archer].

Eclip appreciates view afforded by the setting sun and waning moon and takes in the smell of nature upon the land during harvest time. Eclip's companion Spirit ,a large dog, follows at his side. (Checks for Survival+10=22 Wisdom+3=20 )

When confronted by the sight of the deadly chase of a merchant by two reptilian humanoids, (Spellcraft+5=17) Eclip recognizes the Entangle spell being cast by torch bearing rider and reflectively uses his own Entangle spell to counter the one being cast at the partly. After countering the spell Eclip will shift out of the way of the rushing wagon.

Spirit remains at Eclip's side ready to defend him if attacked.

The big fighter turn his attention to Gentin, "When the wagon went by the driver had a arrow in him, That means to me what ever he was running from, was not friendly!

Then these Lizard face showed up using their bow again against the wagon and the driver. That magic user was going to throw a spell at the wagon, when I intervein with my oun arrow! He then aim his spell at me. So I think that they want the wagon at all cost! Even kill for it! That Sir is what I think!!"
Lenoir pulls himself up to his full height with a Bastard sword in Hand.

Skirmish round one  d20+4=19 d6+3=9 d8+1=4
Wednesday July 12th, 2006 4:14:30 PM

Lenoir explains himself and his opinion of the situation. He also manages to hit the caster.

Gentian tries diplomacy, not knowing this world's laws. He pleas with everyone to stop attacking.

Poe thinks, perhaps, this world is primarily reptilian in nature.

Breanna simply stands there, shocked at the situation unfolding before her.

Calor recognizes the spell for what it is and avoids it.

Eclip skillfully dispels the Entangle with the greatest ease, to the noticable disgust of the reptilian druid. The allure of nature in this place is great. The power of nature is greater here than in the Wold. He unconciously moves toward his companion.
He determines that the weather will be stormy tonight and predicts heavy rain, lightning and light wind for two days at least. Visibility will be compromised.

When the arrow from the lizardman crossed the horses vision, it causes it to move toward the forest edge and allowing the wagon wheel to hit a rotten stump, causing it to stop about twenty feet beyond the group. The driver is thrown from the seat and lays motionless on the road, the arrow now embedded deeper.

Both lizardmen skirt the group, heading for the wagon.

The lizard archer stops and takes aim at Lenoir. It fires, hitting AC 19 for 9 damage.

The lizard druid, who is wearing bear hide armor, stops behind the wagon, dismounts and ducks. What he is doing is unseen.

The forest is on the right, there is dark field to your left and the mist grows heavier. The lizardfolk and wagon are ahead of the group, 25 feet away. The driver is 15 feet away. He is unmoving.

Gentian calls out, "Fine! Your continued attack has earned you the ire of my lance! Have at it!" He says this in druidic as well as common.

After moving into place last round, Gentian now charges the lizard man. He stands in his stirrups and aims the lance with both hands. He hits AC18 for 30 damage (3x damage with spiritied charge feat). Then he continues riding past the archer, ending his move 50 feet from it.

If he has a choice, Gentian stays out of reach of the druid.

[OOC - Don't we get 24 hours?]

These lizard guys are not at all friendly, Calor decides. They must be pretty ticked to keep after that driver even with the six of us sitting here.

Figuring the one behind the wagon is up to no good, Calor decides to cause problems for him.
The wizard casts a spell, bringing into being mutliple sticky strands of goo from the back half of the wagon to the nearby forest trees. The stuff covers the lizard's horse, and hopefully the lizard.

Spirit stands ready to defend Eclip, growling in the direction of the spell caster.

Yes, of course you get 24 hours, but three people, including myself, posted Wednesday... see my point! :)

For future information, I work graveyard and will be able to post between 8am and 2pm Pacific Standard Time, Wold time thats 10am to 4pm. I am usually online for those hours. I get up at 10pm for work, and Wold time has already passed into the next day by then... so my window for posting is slim.

I have also corrected my mistake with the countering of the Entangle.

Poe inspires his new friends.

Breanna comes out of her daze and attacks. Then moves toward the driver. Also needs to specify her target.

Felling more confidant that the group is indeed in the right, Eclip wonders why the reptilians would be attacking the wagon driver (Sense Motive DC 15 = 3 failed), but has absolutely no idea why.

Concerned about the motionless wagon driver, Eclip glances down and using his healing skill looks to see if the fellow is still alive (Heal+7=24).

Spirit continues to stand next to Eclip growling at the attackers ready to defend his companion if attacked.

Haunting green eyes squint slightly, framed by well groomed eyebrows, as the bard tries to figure out what is happening. He concentrates on what he already knows, which is little, but feels the pieces falling into place none-the-less. Poe begins walking on a path that will put him between the lizards and the fallen wagon driver. He appears calm, if not calculating, and maintains the low, droning chant that washes vitality over the others.

The liver, light grey and auburn mottled dog lays where it is, sniffing the air and storing the scents into whatever memorial capacity it may have.

Gentian prepares for a charge that will certainly put an end to the lizardman near the wagon.

Poe continues to inspire his new friends.

Breanna misses.

Calor senses that the lizardman seemed to be interested in the goods that the wagon contained, but is currently more interested in getting to some place safe.

Eclip stows the questionable wand, casts Hold Animal on the druids horse then makes for the downed driver. His talent in healing determines that the driver had been conscious before falling off the wagon. He is still alive. He is human for sure.

(An entangled creature takes a -2 penalty on attack rolls and a -4 penalty on Dexterity, can move at only half speed, and cannot charge or run.)

The druids horse remains mobile even after the Hold Animal is cast. The druids horse begins moving away from the skirmish.

Both lizard folk are now on the archers horse and looking for a spot to escape.

The wagon has caught fire in places.

Too many times has this bard heard of similar tales; there is no need to interfer with others quarls. If the driver proves innocent then he will undoubtedly have felt bad if he died. But he won't now.

Still there is a very real threat with these lizards about; Poe silently prays that they are not the locals.

Eclip retrieves his wand and uses it to cast another cure spell on the driver, "I hope this works better then last time." But again Eclip is disappointed when the wand's magic did little better than a cantrip. (Cure light wand 2pts 48 charges left.). Eclip sighs "This may take a while."

(An entangled creature takes a -2 penalty on attack rolls and a -4 penalty on Dexterity, can move at only half speed, and cannot charge or run.)

Gentian charges the fleeing rider.

Poe continues to inspire his new friends.

Breanna misses again.

Calor looks at the wagon and realizes that it is likely that the lizards weren't trying to burn the wagon. The burnt and broken vile looks as if it set off the web. The fire isn't strong enough to cause damage to the wagon; the mists are heavy.

Eclip attempts to heal the driver. The driver's eyes flutter when he is healed, but he is weak.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

The wagon driver remains on the ground, now barely conscious. Eclip is now with him.

The archer slides violently down the lance, pinning Gentian underneath. (Ride check DC 20 to avoid being pinned by falling scaly carcass.

The caster loses grip of the trailing rope of the net as he tries to make a grab for the reins but falls prone onto the ground, surrounded by the group.
"Weeee leavvvve now?" Asks the petrified lizard shaman. "Weeee no need gooodsssss anywaysss that bad!." He hisses in common, hands are raised in obvious and convincing surrender. "Why little man killed the Hunter?" He looks sadly at the skewered lizard.

The druids horse stops several yards away and begins nibbling some buttercups.

The wagon fire is slowly dwindling. The goods and wagon are no longer in danger.

Night is fair drawing on.

The wand's magic works a little better but still short of what it is capably of (Cure light wand 3pts. 47 charges left.). Seeing how there is a Dark blue drow and a large dog hovering over the recovering driver, Eclip tries to reassure him in common, "Welcome back. You had a narrow escape, but you're safe now. My name is Eclip. What's your name and how did you come to be chased by these reptilians?" If the man feels up to it, Eclip will help him up.

Spirit continues to stand guard next to Eclip, panting in the night air while excess drool drips from his chops.

Calor
Tuesday July 18th, 2006 6:42:14 PM

With the lizard guy giving up, and the driver being attended to, there ain't much for Calor to do.

He decides to investigate the contents of the wagon to see what all the fuss was about, while still listening to whatever is said between the lizard and the halfling dog rider.
Why'd we kill him? he thinks incredulously. You guys DID start it, you know.

Watching as the lizardfolk reveals a sense of emotion a pained look of regret enters the pale green eyes of the dwarven bard.

Tanned hands slide teh beautifully carved thumb-drum over to his left hip and he walks, slowly, towards the lizard and the horse it is on.

"Look at what has become of yur friend. We meant little harm here and non at all until you tried throwing that spell at us. What is yur name and what was the reason for your pursuit and attempted murder of this caravan?"

Poe walks up to the lizard with empty hand and ask him in several languages DMJayB Highlight to display spoiler: {Common, Dwarven, Terran, High Woldian, Ignan, Draconic} which he would prefer to talk in. Poe will continue his conversation with a slight smile and void of all aggression.

"We have stumbled upon Little Notting here; is it your village or are you from other parts around here? My manners have eluded me again, I am sorry, the name is Poe Sauer and this here is my trusted companion, Cervantes. May I be indulged in knowing your name as well?"

There is the slightest motion of Poe's head bobing in rhythm as he talks with the lizard.

Lemoir tries again to free himself, but taking no chances, he yells at the others "Hey! You guys! Can you help get me out of this net? Sometime before the horse leaves?"

He tries to saw his way out of the net again. But talking to himself, "The first thing I'm going to buy when I get out of here is a dagger!"

Gentian  d20+12=15
Wednesday July 19th, 2006 7:54:10 PM

Gentian guides his riding dog expertly, but the body of the lizardman falls too fast, and the halfling is pinned beneath the corpse.

Unprintable words stream out from under the dead body. "Blood! Blood on my armor! Oh, you would pay for this, if you had not already!"

The cursing changes to a laugh. "Can anyone help me out from under this thing?"

Gentian's dog barks, too.

Skirmish over...
Thursday July 20th, 2006 4:15:22 PM

Lenoir remains under the net and promises himself that he will purchase a dagger as soon as he's out of it.

Gentian is pinned and calls for help.

Poe starts a series of questioning.

Breanna is quiet.

Calor finds barrels and barrels of mead, brandy, and spirits. There are dozens of boxes of towels, glasses and spoons. There is even a box of nuts.

Eclip introduces himself to the driver.

----------------

The lizard man is surprised at the group's sudden politeness. "I'm Glissssh. We are trying to fund the war effortssss in the Easssst of your country. And I have a clutch at home.
Please let me go." He says in common.

The horses are simply grazing.

Eclip and Spirit
Thursday July 20th, 2006 4:58:53 PM

Eclip smiles politely at the driver, "Rest and catch your breath, I'll be right back." Eclip looks at Spirit, "Stay with him boy." Spirit barks once and looks at the driver while he pants noisily.

Eclip goes over to Gentian and help pull the dead lizard from off of him and his dog. Commenting as he tugs at the lizard corps, "That lance strike was impressive!"

Lenoir  d20+4=7
Thursday July 20th, 2006 5:27:29 PM

Lehoir is getting tired, He's getting no where fast. So He'll try going another way, "Well! Glish, if you get me out of this net, I'll listen to your problems."

He tell the lizars, as he try to forse his way out.

Gentian
Thursday July 20th, 2006 6:40:05 PM

Gentian gratefully accepts help from Eclip. "Thanks, my friend! And the blow with the lance was nothing. My aim was aided by my magic."

He talks to the surviving lizard druid. He speaks in druidic and first says, "We are brothers by our devotion to The Earthen Mother, so I would have shown mercy to your friend. but he did not cease his attack, so he earned the anger of my lance."

He asks about this war. Then Gentian says, "Your cause may be just, or not, but stealing is a dishonorable answer. Where are you from? Where will you go if we free you? Will you vow to steal no more?"

Genitan is curious about the human driver of the cart. Did he live? Is he awake? What is his story?

If Lenoir is still tangled, Gentian will try to free him.

Breanna
Thursday July 20th, 2006 8:27:37 PM

Breanna listens to the conversation and says to the lizard man "Funding? You call stealing from people funding! No matter for what reason it is still theft, why dont you raise money honestly!"

"There ain't much here worth stealing," Calor informs the others.

The wizard stays on the wagon, and looks around at the surrounding countryside.
"I wonder where the blazes we're supposed to go?" he wonders aloud, as he absentmindedly scratches at an itch.

[Listen 10, Spot 6]

Explainations....
Friday July 21st, 2006 6:56:16 PM

Realizing the group isn't likely to kill him now, Glish answers some questions.
"We were a raiding party ssssent to obtain suppliessss. We live a far way away, to the East, in the swamps of Gradno. The efforts are going poorly for us."

At that moment the driver finds his voice. "I... the route to Notting... my delivery needs to be finished or I'll get fired!" The wounded man stands and attempts to get back to the wagon, then collapses again.

Glish continues, "I do not wissh to go into the human town."

Lenoir
Friday July 21st, 2006 7:23:06 PM

"Well! Help me out of here and I'll see what i can do?" Lenoir tell the lizard man. As he wrestle with the net. Maybe I'll go begging for donation fot the orphens, People might give if they think that there children involve! What do the rest of you think?" Lenoir is still pulling on the Net.

Gentian
Friday July 21st, 2006 11:36:06 PM

Gentian repeats himself. "If you will swear a holy vow to steal no more and to attack innocents no more, then you can go."

Then he helps Lenoir out of that darn net.

Breanna
Saturday July 22nd, 2006 2:47:51 AM

"Lenior! You cant go lying to the townspeople about wanting money for orphans and then give it to an army which will only MAKE orphans!

We dont even know anything about the war, why it's being fought or which side these theives are working for, other than if they dont have supplies they are probably losing. We dont even know if he's telling the truth. He could be just a thief and is saying that they're working for an army."

Breanna doesnt care for thieves, oh she's heard stories about people robbing from the rich to give to the poor. But for the most part those are just stories. A good thief would at least be able to get information on the merchants and wouldnt kill for towels, nuts, and alcohol.

Eclip and Spirit
Saturday July 22nd, 2006 6:56:15 PM

Eclip goes and helps the driver, "You need to take it easy your still injured, or being fired will be the lest of your worries." To the rest of the group, "Since the attack was against goods owned by the town Notting, shouldn't we take the Glish in to face their justices? After all they would have killed this driver."

Spirit sits and watches the group.

{how injured is the driver?}

The tanned dwarf cocks his head to the right and stares at the lizard for a few moments as if deep in thought.

"Tell ya what thur Glish, tell me a bit more about the war that you are involved in; your side of the story that is, and I will try to convince my companions here to free you."

He walks casually over to the lizard, puts a hand on his shoulder and leans in for a whisper and a wink.

"I may even remember your name for a fireside tale or a song-or-two."

Poe then walks around in a small figure eight mumbling little nothings all-the-while listening intently as to what Glish is saying.

When the lizard is finished Poe will turn on his heels and stroll over to the driver and kneel down next to him.

"Well blood, it looks as though you are a bit worse-for-wear huh? I tell ya what, how about you tell me what happened, exactly what happened and the details of this delivery job and I will try to get my companions to escort you to Little Notting. Sounds good don't it?"

All his companions already seem to be working on various levels of diplomacy an intrigue though, so they might not have heard him.

Calor sighs impatiently, and then drapes his arms comfortably along back of the bench and waits for something more interesting to happen.

Glish and the driver...  d20+1=5
Monday July 24th, 2006 1:34:12 PM

Glish looks at Poe, then flicks his tongue absently.
"Your not from here are you?" Inquires the lizard. "Not many of the warring clansss know why it sssstarted, but all of the instigatorssss who sssstarted have ssssinced joined Kurtulmak.
Sssso no one really knows why or how it sssstarted, but currently it issss a territorial battle. The coastal tribessss are winning. They have resssssourcesssss that we don't.
I don't know more. I'm just a shaman."

The grey bearded driver listens to the lizard and scoffs. "The way I hears it is that you bloody west-scales have it easy. But liz-poly-tics was always hard to understand."

He then hears Calor. "Therya be good lads! You help me to the temple there fer some healing and I'll show you to the best inn in the village! Oh, I be Mr Carlin by the way."

Mr Carlin looks at Eclip. "Leave the scale-bloak be. He and the rest are simply trying to survive. B'sides there haven't really been bandit raids h're in years. This was a nice change." The old man smiles at the lizard.

Meanwhile, Lenoir continues to struggle, Breanna chastizes him and Eclip suggests law over freedom.

The lizard then goes one step further with a bribe. "You can have the hunterssss equipment and if I can be ssssset free with hissss beasssst and body sssso I can return home for the burial ritessss." Its a feeble sounding plee for freedom.

Eclip and Spirit
Monday July 24th, 2006 2:22:25 PM

Eclip looks a bit surprised at Mr Carlin's suggestion to let the lizard be, he shrugs saying "Very forgiving soul, but if that's the way of the land I see no reason to hold Glish. Shall we stop wasting time here and escort Carlin into town?"

Spirit sits contently waiting.

"Alright! Get me out of here and I'll be good!" said this fighter, "I will not hold up the Sharman!"

When out of the Net, Lenoir will Help Glis put the body on the horse "I wish you well."

Gentian
Monday July 24th, 2006 3:53:16 PM

The mounted halfling shrugs. "I don't know this land or its laws. If this native urges us to set the lizard free, then I have no objections."

"But give us your weapons so that you can do no harm on your way home," he tells the reptilian druid.

Calor
Monday July 24th, 2006 7:01:35 PM

Calor rolls his eyes at Gentian's last comment.
"Um, he's a spellcaster," the man points out - in a nice a way as possible when trying to tell a companion and ally that he's being an idiot.
"I don't think it'll make a difference one way or the other."

After that, the man says nothing, but just slouches further into the bench seat of the wagon. The bangs of his tousled brown hair fall over his face, and he negligently combs it back with a hand.
Its never easy to get comfortable in one of these things.

Breanna
Tuesday July 25th, 2006 7:07:03 AM

Breanna wonders about the merchant being so willing to let the lizard man go free, but realizes that there may be several reasons. The man might truely be grateful to have the excitement (although that does seem unlikely), the man may be carrying contraband (although nothing they have seen would suggest that to her), or the town may have harsh punishments for wrongdoers. Breanna has heard that in some places children stealing food to eat have their hands cut off or are killed instead of being taken care of by placing them in an orphanage where they will get food, clothing, and learn a trade to support themselves.

Breanna lets the lizardman go and helps the others as they get ready to go onto the town.

Lenoir
Tuesday July 25th, 2006 7:56:00 AM

For the first time in a long time, Lenoir smiles at the conment that Calor made. he will go to Glisssh and give him his weapon and a bag of food that he was carrying, "Here take this (handing him the bag of food)it's not much but it's all I have! Good Luck!"
The fighter watches the lizardman go on his way.

Freedom and Notting
Tuesday July 25th, 2006 10:23:34 AM

The group decides to let the grateful lizard go, who leaves his spell pouch and weapons in good faith with the group.
"Next time your in Gradno, look up Glish."
He hefts his hunter onto his own horse, hands the reins of the hunters horse to anyone nearby and leaves peacefully.

Mr Carlin turns to the group and says, "Tisn't often I see hospitality like that 'round anymore. Lizards get a bum deal in many places like the Great Expanse and the Fields and the Moors. Harsh punishments for a captured lizard bandit who arrives in Torsin just south of Lil' Notting, down river." The old man shudders. "We have our own wars to deal with. Notting's Sheriff Anubi..." He looks suddenly around with fear. "... isn't as sympathetic to the liz's cause as me or you. Town council usually sides with Anubi."

He straightens up and clinches at his shoulder. "Used to be a soldier. This is the first time in twenty years I've been hit wit' a stinkin' arrow." He laughs. "Awell! If I can get to Boccob's Church, I'll show you where to take my wagon and the delivery... if you don't mind helping me more!?"

To my players ~ I will do my best after every encounter to hand out XP and treasure... list to follow. If this gets too be too much, I'll stop. :)

Treasure: Everburning Torch, medium chain shirt, masterwork composite shortbow (str +2), 2x clubs, 17 arrows, druid's component pouch(strange items within), sling, bag of a dozen stones, a beat up net, tanglefoot bag, thunderstone, 6 scrolls, two rough leather pouches with 150gp each (gold coins have no mint mark and are large, inch 1/2 diameter), and one very nice light horse with military gear(leather barding, military saddle, bags and bridle).

XP: Each of you gain 300xp. Plus 25 roleplaying bonus. You all did great considering.

This treasure and xp will be of greater value if the game goes permanent. I will allow leveling in the middle of the game of the module.

Eclip and Sprit
Tuesday July 25th, 2006 11:14:25 AM

Eclip muses as Glish leaves with his fallen comrade, "Where does justice ends and injustice begin?"

Eclip looks as the gear and horse left by the lizard wondering what they should do with it, "What sort of wars do you have here?" Eclip ask Mr Carlin as he helps get the wagon back on the road.

Spirit stands out of the way panting happily with bits of slobber dripping from his lips.

Poe Sauer and Cervantes
Tuesday July 25th, 2006 12:24:39 PM

Looking over the pile of 'spoils' teh dwarf rubs his bare chin and looks around to the others.

"First thing we need is to load some of this up and into the saddlebags of that thur horse. I will look over those rolled up pieces of parchment iffen no one else wants to, so that we can find out what the writings may be of. Maybe they are military orders or the begingins to an epic narrative of the lizard tribe's struggle....hmmm.... Anyways whatever 'tis I will try my best to figure it out. why don't we get this wagon back on the trail and get Mr. Carlin to Lil Nottin'."

Looking again at the strangers around him Poe nods with a bit of assuredness. he eyes the halfling carefully and then walks over to him.

"Fine riding thur. That lance of yours could prolly make kabobs out of an ettin if you wanted it to, huh?"

After working throught he information given thus far about eh surroundings, a light flickers briefly as he recognizes a name, "Mr. Carlin, didjya say Boccob?" A wary eyebrow is raised if that is confirmed.

Calor  d20+7=10
Tuesday July 25th, 2006 4:34:16 PM

Calor's dark brown eyes rove over the warhorse, and the wizard notes that none of his companions seem inclined to claim it.

Sometimes, he tells himself in his father's voice, its better to beg forgiveness than ask permission.

The young man slides himself off the bench of the wagon and ambles easily over to the front of the horse.
"shhhhhh," he calms it softly. Calor reaches out a hand to rub the animal's nose.
"So, what unpronouncable collection of syllables are you called?"

The wizard will walk around the horse, checking for any tell tale markings or brands. The last thing he needs is to ride into town on a horse that may have been stolen from that very town earlier.

Should everything prove satisfactory, Calor mounts with practiced ease.
[Ride 10]
"Shall we, then?" he asks the group.

Gentian
Tuesday July 25th, 2006 9:26:34 PM

Gentian asks if anyone can tell if these items are magic, or if they can read these scrolls. He himself cannot. Perhaps we can divvy this up tonight, and sell what we cannot keep.

He tells Poe that an ettin would be a great challenge indeed, one that would require the entire group, and a good deal of luck!

Gentian asks this Carlin fellow if he ever heard of a person named Swiftly in this Notting place. And he introduces himself.

Lenoir
Wednesday July 26th, 2006 5:49:22 AM

lenoir smiles at Poe, but will ask him "Poe! do you want help with yoor Horse?" He will then call his own horse, "White Hoof! Tweet! Come Boy!"
His horse comes trotting out of the meadow and stands before him, He's a beautiful animal all black with just one white hoof.

Mr Carlin (DM Jay B)
Wednesday July 26th, 2006 11:27:43 AM

As the group get moving toward town with the wagon and driver, questions are asked that will likely serve some purpose.
"I deliver here every now and then, every other month or so. Started this route about a year ago. I don't live here, but you could ask at Moony's Mead Tavern. Thatstha place I am delivering to in fact. Kolpis, thats the owner and bartender there, he knows about alot of things in these here parts. Sheeooot! He should! He was a former treasure hunter in these parts for years."

Eclip and Spirit
Wednesday July 26th, 2006 2:03:15 PM

Eclip walks along side of the wagon with Spirit at his side, "Calor, if you would like, I could ask the horse what name it will answer to?"

Spirit ambles along at Eclip's side.

Calor
Wednesday July 26th, 2006 8:43:55 PM

Now the proud owner of a new horse, Calor is feeling gracious.
"To Mooney's Mead Tavern then," he echoes. "Let's go."

Eclip makes his offer, and the wizard blinks at him soundlessly a couple times as his mind sets about working that tidbit into his wold view. It never occurred to the young man that somebody actually could talk to the horse.
"Uh, yeah," he stammers finally. "That'd be, uh, very nice. Thanks Eclip."

Gentian
Wednesday July 26th, 2006 9:01:19 PM

Hoping for better info at the tavern, Gentian is glad to journey into town.

Breanna
Thursday July 27th, 2006 4:51:41 AM

Breanna will look over the pouch of stones to see if they are suitable to use in her sling. She'll also take the arrows if nobody wants them. She heads along with the rest of the group to the tavern, maybe she can get some food.

Lenoir
Thursday July 27th, 2006 6:00:28 AM

Lenoir talk to his horse, "See White Hoof! Your going to have a company on our jurney. Would you like that?" Lenoir put'd his head next to th horses head, "What?... I don't know if that horse is female or male? But I'm sure you'll find out for yourself."

Lenoir Mounts his horse, ready to leave.

Lenoir will take the everburning tourch.

Eclip and Spirit
Thursday July 27th, 2006 11:16:16 AM

Eclip proceeds to cast a spell upon himself then for the next four minuets nays, snorts, and occasionally stomps his foot while seemingly talking to Calor's new horse who seems to reply in kind.

After a bit Eclip tells Calor what he's leaned, "She said she likes the name Daisy, because the flowers smells sweet. She asked if you are her new servant. He hopes you last longer than the others did, because you are much lighter than the ones with a long tail. She likes apples, carrots, and lots of grain. She also wanted to known if White hoof who she thinks is cute is a stud or gelding. She dislikes her current saddle, its too wide and she thinks it makes her look fat. She would really like a new one with lots of sparkly shiny stuff on it. She suggest you watch out for the pointy sticks everyone carries around, because just as she get a new servant trained they get stuck by one of those sharp pointy things and die. Lately it seems her servants come and go as often as the moon."

There is a look of great interest in the dwarf's eyes as Mr. Carlin talks of the inn keeper and his former trade.

"Well, maybe this hur Kolpis could prove to be a bit usefull. Mr. Carlin, iffen you are not from around hur then whur do you call home? How far away is that?

On the road again...
Thursday July 27th, 2006 2:56:11 PM

The group manages to get the wagon off the stump and back on the road. One or two struts on one wheel are cracked and the side charred a bit, but nothing that can't be fixed by a skilled wheel-wright.

Mr Carlin enjoys the converation, as it is, and answers the question directed to him.
"I was born in Torsin m'self, thats in the Great Expanse. Thats about five or six hundred miles South of 'ere. Ya follow the Midnight River South until it forks then turn South East onto the Black River. Torsin's crossing is about 150 miles past the fork.
But I live across the lake in a small village of about a hundred people or so. It ain't much, but its home."

The question of the horses name is soon answered, she likes the name of Daisy. She explains her diet and questions the former servants fashion sense.

Poe is certain at least four of the scrolls are magical, one is a list of sorts written in Draconic and the other is a map detailing features of the land surrounding what looks to be the local area.

Several more items from the treasure are claimed.
The torch is claimed by Lenoir.
The pouch stones claimed by Breanna contains 25 strange looking stones. The stones are of some sort of natural glass, the ridges on the stones are sharp. (obsidian sling stones, +2 damage bonus on impact, these are not masterwork) The sling that taken from the lizard is made from an extremely thick leather(the pouch is made of the same leather) that you can only assume is because the ammunition is so sharp.

---------------------------

The journey into the village of Little Notting is uneventful.

It is dark, about 7 o'clock.

You enter on the eastern most road of the village. Off to your right a large hill rises and the a dark manor looms over the sleepy village.
From your left, the slight breeze brings a stronger smell of peat mixed with heavy moisture. Also to your left is a tower with a beacon light pointing through the mist South. You can hear whistles and horns from what can only be a small harbor.
There are lights on in town, more towards the center of town.

Mr Carlin says suddenly, "Here to the left." You turn left into a rod iron gated church yard, headstones seen all around. The yard looks out at the manor. The wagon pulls up and Mr Carlin attempts to get out of the wagon by himself but is having a difficult time of it.

Mr Carlin thanks you for your assistance and asks you to help finish his delivery to Moony's Mead Tavern after dropping him off at the chapel of Boccob for some healing and rest.
"I am in your debt friends. I hope we meet again." Says Mr Carlin, as a young acolyte see him inside. "Oh! Wait." He says. "When you get into town and reach the town Square, the tavern is on your left, it'll be hard to miss."

You escort the horse and wagon to the tavern of Moony's Mead and unload the cart. The tavern looks to be a warm and inviting place. There are people outside sitting on the steps. A patron uses a boot brush and cleans his boots prior to entering. There is another patron being drug off by a constable. In the middle of the square, a night watchman wanders about holding a long pole with a lantern swinging from it.

It seems only right to let the owner of the tavern know his goods have arrived.

Breanna
Thursday July 27th, 2006 6:54:36 PM

On the ride to the tavern Breanna studies how to make her sling better so that the slingstones wont tear it. she'll keep the sling for now, but she much prefers using a sling that she makes herself.

Calor
Thursday July 27th, 2006 8:15:13 PM

"Daisy," Calor answers Eclip dubiously. He's not entirely sure if all that was made up or not. But, Daisy is a good a name as any other.
"Hokay, Daisy," he addresses her, "giddyap"

The wizard chooses not to remark upon the comment concerning revolving 'servants'.

The young man listens politely as Mr. Carlin speaks, trying to form an image of the lay of this strange land. Its difficult going, especially when one is hungry.

Fortunately, they pull up to the inn. Calor alights from Daisy and ties her up on the hitching rail. Waiting for his comrades, he eventually enters the place and wanders over to the barkeeper.
"Uh, we're here with Mr. Carlin? Making a delivery?"
The young man lets the question hang, and waits expectantly for helpful direction of some sort.

Gentian
Thursday July 27th, 2006 10:25:23 PM

The halfling thanks Carlin for his advice and expresses the hope to see him again.

At the tavern, he joins Calor in seeking to drop off Carlin's delivery. Then he sees about getting the group to go to the common room ... hopefully finding this Kolpis fellow.

Eclip and Spirit
Friday July 28th, 2006 9:40:04 AM

Eclip smiles as he muses to himself, that it's probably best that people and animals don't speak the same language.

At the temple, Eclip wishes Mr. Carlin and hands him one of the two pouches of gold, "Here you might need this for healing expenses." The other gold pouch Eclip will open up and divide it out evenly 25 gold coins each. Eclip will also clamed the druid spell pouch. "Poe, I might be able to read the scrolls if they are druidical in nature."

After they arrive at the tavern, Eclip orders Spirit to say and guard the wagon and then he follows the others into Moony's Mead hall,

Spirit jumps up onto the wagon seat and lays down looking quit conferrable.

Heading to a tavern is one of the thigns that this bard does best. His eyes seem to glimmer a bit at the thought. The wire-haired companion also seems a bit more lively, maybe just because his human is exuding a bit of excitement.

"Well I tellya, maybe in ol' Moony's we can get some serious information going here. I wil have a lil chat with Kolpis and try to piece this together a bit better."

His thumb, all-the-while, absently taps at the drum on his waist.

As he arrives at Moony's he takes a quick look-see around the place*, estimating the number of people within, any other visible exits and to find out who is playing this fine evening.

Walking decisively to the bar he lays down a gold piece, a large, friendly smile smears his face.

"Tell ya what thur friend, these are some strange times. We got a delivery fur this hur place waiting outside, dropped off by a Mr. Carlin. I'll have a pint, prefurbly of something with fruit brewed in it.*"

He looks over the barkeep and tries to determine if this is Kolpis or not*.

"So what types of excitement have emerged in these parts lately thur friend?*"

Taverns and tales...
Monday July 31st, 2006 10:49:05 AM

As a group, the heroes walk into the bar and notice one thing, the bar s surrounded by patrons listening to another go on about some thing or another. They are watched suspiciously by the few folks on the porch as they entered.

The bartender and several patrons are laughing at the local drunk's newest, and apparently, the most embellished story he's ever told.
The drunk wears what looks like artisan's garb gone to rags, has a bum arm and seems to limp a bit. Grey hair, grey eyes, but on a man that is far too young for these features.

If interrupted, the bartender will give the stranger a sour look, pours a pint(slopping down the glass) for you and go back to listening to the story.

Drunk - "...and I ran outside and the whole thing disappeared from sight..."
Patron #1 - Laughing, "Doloff, you are cracked. Nothing like that ever happens! An entire mansion! Gone? Think about what your saying. I saw your house no more than two hours ago."
Patron #2 to #1 - "See, I tells you that's wha' 'appens when you give a drunk all da money!"
Drunk - "Come on. It happened last eve' as I said b'fore. I 'aven't been home since. I need someone to know I'm telling..."
Bartender - "DOLOFF, that's enough, I'm cutting you off friend. Go home and sleep it off."
Drunk - "I can't go home haven't you heard ANYTHING I've..."
Bartender - "Go! Or I'll have you thrown bodily out, again."

Dejected, the man leaves, muttering to himself.

Old bar wench - "Weawwy is too bad. He used to be such a smawt fewwow. Such stories are wubbish. Why doesn't he just give up?"
Bartender - "Since his wife committed suicide, he's been a bit... well, funny. I would be too if I found my wife like that! Though... I still think he knows what really happened, if you catch the meaning."

Finally realizing what the group said, the bartender says, "Is old George alright!? Why didn't he complete delivery?"

Eclip and Spirit
Monday July 31st, 2006 4:07:30 PM

Eclip enter the bar following the rest of the group. Finding everyone listening to the drunks' strange story, Eclip waits for the story to conclude before ordering mead. He'll let one of the other more influential of tongue do the talking.

Spirit rest patiently on the wagons seat outside.

Gentian
Monday July 31st, 2006 4:40:09 PM

Gentian waits while the drunk is escorted out, then answers the innkeeper's questions. He explains that the driver was attacked on the road, and that he is at the temple of healing. We met him on the road and offered to bring his cart here.

"Also, we are looking for a person named Swiftly. Can you help us?"

Lenoir
Monday July 31st, 2006 6:19:46 PM

Lenoir listen to the old drunk's tale, again to the bar wrench, So he tell he that he'll have a mead and will be right back because he want to take care of his horse.

Lenoir hurry after the Doloff, Sir Doloff! Wait! I would like to have a word with you?" as he catches up with the drunk, he tells him "I belive you! I belive that some one has cast a spell on your house to take it away! And I don't think your crazy. I want to hear your whole story, I don't know if I acn help, but if it matches my own house that vanish with my Mother inside! I'll try to convince the others with me to look for you house.

Here come to the stable with me, while I go inside the tavern for a little while!"

Calor
Monday July 31st, 2006 8:02:05 PM

Calor listens to the drunk's tale, his head cocked slightly to the side.
They'll need help even though they don't know it he muses to himself. Ain't that what the smoke thingy said?

So caught up in his introspection is he, that the young man misses the bulk of Gentian's story.
"we are looking for a person named Swiftly"

"Huh? We are?" - oops, I said that out loud.

"Uh, I think I'll go help Lenoir," he finishes lamely. Calor tags along, trying to not look as stupid as he feels.
Who's Swiftly? he wonders. What'd I miss?"

The game is afoot...
Tuesday August 1st, 2006 10:02:31 AM

"Oh, I am glad George is okay. I'll keep getting my shipments in good time then!" He says as he pulls another drink for a customer. He begins wiping a cloudy glass, polishing it clear and setting it in its rack.

"You say your looking for someone named Swiftly? Swiftly. No one around her goes by that as a first name, but Doloff's sir name is Swiftly."

"Kolpis! Can we get another drink here?!" shouts a boisterous table.

"Yeah, yeah." Says the bartender, who seems put upon, but sends off more drinks with his barmaid.

He leans toward Gentian meaningfully. "I tells you though... Doloff is just a little funny. Folks 'round here steer clear of him and his manor house.
Guess I'd turn funny too if my...." He breaks off.

"Well, I shouldn't go into details, you just passing through and all."

Tuesday August 1st, 2006 1:45:40 PM

Poe picks up on the bartender's name, most likely due to the cunning ear of the bard. He leans over the bar a bit more, puts several gold on the counter and smiles.

"Tell ya what thur friend, could I ask of a story or two from you later? Say when things calm down in here a bit? I have heard that you would know more about these lands than anyone else would; I also hear that your travels have brought you through much. Maybe I will compose a piece in your honor, if the stories are good enough." His statement is followed by a large wink.

Poe waits for Kolpis' reply and the turns, looking over the entire bar, trying to determine how many are in the bar, what races are represented and the overall atmosphere of the place. He tries to keep a bit separate from the others of the group. He most definitely looks to see if anyone is playing music or telling tales and if there is a stage.

Calor
Wednesday August 2nd, 2006 7:55:46 AM

Calor patiently waits for something interesting to be said between Lenoir and this Doloff guy. The brown haired man leans up against a convenient post, instinctively moving his bow out the way.

He stands there, head tilted, arms crossed, looking at Doloff and occasionally glancing around the stable, taking note of the contents. At one point he shifts slightly, and reaches up to scratch a nagging itch on the side of his head.

Wonder if this place has room for us to crash, he wonders silently. I could use a nap.

Scrumpies and flattery....
Wednesday August 2nd, 2006 11:11:28 AM

The bartender turns pink in the cheeks at Poe's suggestion about the 'story in honor of him'.

"Well, I know your not locals and bandits wouldn't take the time to ask questions."
He smiles, then looks at Lenoir. "Now I know he's not from around here. Are from Salvia?" He asks.

When beer is asked for, Kolpis says, "Aw, beer is common. Try our regional cider, we call it scrumpy. It has a sweet taste with a tangy bite. Its this years harvest best!"

He leans over to Poe and Gentian. "I will tell you that this area is full of history. Not many of the folk who live here realize it.
If your patron tells you Doloff is in trouble, thats an understatement in my opinion."
He picks up a glass and stares at it as he wipes it.

"Doloff's is the standard rags to riches story from what I understand. He inherits the family manor from an old childless uncle and then sells his home in the country. He moves into this area about 20 years ago after his uncle's will was settled. Shortly afterward, the family starts going funny. Though, I'm not sure if the family was like that before they moved in or not.
The uncle was just a miser and was often seen wandering about grumbling to himself through the market place.
Doloff has just as many, if not more funny habits than his uncle had. Collecting odd, expensive pieces, which he hoards in secret."

Kolpis then gets a dark significant look in his eye.
"Then, one night ten years ago, his wife commits suicide. She was found in the conservatory by Doloff. The really odd thing is, he told the head constable, Anubi, that just after finding her, he blacked out and woke up on his ceiling in the morning. Needless to say, the story was fishy, but there was nothing linking Doloff directly to her death and it was determined by Boccob's and Pelor's clergy BOTH that she HAD committed suicide.
But Anubi felt that Doloff was withholding information and Ol' Doloff did 6 months in the local jail." He pauses. "I think Doloff used to be a cobbler before the inheritance." He shakes himself out of the memory.

He looks right at Calor and smiles. "You think you need a nap do ya." Can Kolpis read thoughts?! A handy skill for a bartender. "We have two rooms upstairs. One is currently occupied, but the stables rents out cheap facilities and there is an inn just down the street which isn't that great. There is alway the hovel at the edge of town, but Anubi tends to patrol there to check for squatters."

He thinks a moment then slaps his forehead. "I've been an idiot. If you are here to help Doloff after all, why not go see him. His manor is HUGE and one person isn't in need of all those rooms!"

He turns to Breanna. "My people have already taken care of it. In fact, the scrumpy was on that load."

Sorry, I've been negligent with something.

Kolpis is a VERY large man. You have seen NO bouncers in the tavern.
Kolpis' has two primary features which stand out. First, is his long shock of bright red hair and beard which must reach his waste. Second is his massive 7ft tall frame. It looks as though he could bench press a draft horse.
On the wall behind the bar is a plaque on the which hangs a large bastard sword. The plaque read simply:

The complaint department.

The bar is made of a solid chunk of a strange dark metal.

With a "tck, tck", the wizard has the equine moving toward the edge of town.

Poe & Cervantes [in stables with horses]
Thursday August 3rd, 2006 10:05:05 AM

Poe's eyes twinkle with excitement as he hears tale of Doloff and him dancing on the ceiling. He knows that this stuff will be dismissed in tale as drunken boastery but it should be told none-the-less.

"Well, stout Kolpis, we thank you greatly fur yur generosity. I'll be back to talk more of yur story in the next few days. Have a scrumpy ready fur me and I'll have my drum in hand. I feel this place could use a bit of a show and I could use some new material."

The dwarf flashes a cool wink, taps his fingers in some rhythmical fashion and turns on his heel.

He walks with a slight variation of a swagger and heads out the door with the others.

Looking around at the rest of the group he smiles.

"Looks like we may get a roof over our heads in the form of a haunter house. I love haunted houses, they make fur great stories round the fire. So whur is this Doloff chap at anywho?"

His feet carry him a bit closer to the stables where another rhythmical beat ensues. After a moment a happy, trotting wire-haired hound comes spring out from within. He must have been laying in a pile of hay as Poe starts picking random straws out of is coat.

Mist and missed...
Thursday August 3rd, 2006 10:24:31 PM

Decisions made, most of the group leaves in search of Doloff Swiftly, while Lenoir services the bottom of a glass.
"Yur friends are leavin'." Says Kolpis.

Outside, the visibility isn't great, the mist from earlier has gotten thick. Lights from nearby street-lamps and lanterns make ghostly spectres as shadows move in front of them.

In this strange place its hard to determine direction. But if memory serves, going back the way you came may get you where you need to go.

After a few minutes, a dark ghostly rise is lit by the quarter moon. The house on the rise is just above the mist. On the street, about a hundred yards away is a human shaped figure moving toward the rise. You catch up to what you think MUST be Doloff, but it turns out to be nothing more than a trick of the light and mist.

Eventually you all come to a crossroad. On your left, is a path leading up toward the manor. On your right is a churchyard, stones peeking at you through the mist. The moon creeps behind another cloud and is gone. So is its helpful light.

It has taken you about twenty minutes to walk this far. In good visiblity, you think its about a fifteen minute walk to the manor; there is also the fact that there is a small incline toward the manor. Its been thirty or thirty-five minutes since Doloff left the tavern.

The mists billow menacingly as you ponder your next step. The rod iron gate to the graveyard creeks slightly. (Int check please.... hmmm, DC 15 or 16 should do it. Spot check as well)

It is dark, about 8 o'clock. The mist is thick and the clouds are rolling in.

Creepy and creaky... (DM Jay B)
Saturday August 5th, 2006 12:14:28 AM

The group seems to be waiting for something, lights are cast and they become vigilant, but no one seems to move either toward the house or the graveyard. The house would seem the most logical.

Several of you remember the gate being locked coming into town, but now its open slightly. The shadows in the graveyard dance, as if spirits are restless and dancing with each other around headstones.
Up the hill toward the manor, there is no activity at all. A long row of trees sit, ready to guide you up the path to the house.

At this point, one thing goes through your mind: 'Seek the one called Swiftly.'

Doloff's house has reappeared. Perhaps he has returned to it.

Andergon actually tracks the scent to this spot, then flounders. He's lost the scent. Gentian feels that Andergon has hit a busy part of the road and perhaps TOO MANY smells (including the strong odor of peat) may be contributing to his confusion.
