The Remains of the Day

DM Bob and Carla
Thursday August 3rd, 2006 12:14:54 PM

Steven's remains enthralled with the bard's music, listening attentively and almost imperceptibly nodding his head along with the rhythm of the drum. In response to Zeoll's gentle probing, the manservant speaks of years of loyal service to the doctor. Zeoll doesn't learn much else, but the wemic does get the sense that the man knows something that makes him uncomfortable.

Toros becomes interested in a large picture book with illustrations of flora, whereas Flat-Top discovers a section of medical texts. One well-worn book on how to synthesize poisons from plant and animal sources, and what affect these concoctions have on different species gets his attention. Gecktar roams around the library, but nothing in particular attracts his attention.

Refreshed from time spent under the stars Winterglade returns to his room to work on another project, while Rock takes precautions and sleeps in his gear. A droopy eyed Steven's stifles a yawn, and getting the hint, Zeoll, Flat-Top, Toros, and Gecktar retire each to their respective rooms. Brahmah soon returns, taking up a solitary vigil in the dimly lit great hall.

As the captain of the Chosen keeps watch, his companions sleep fitfully. Brahmah hears them cry out, as their sleep is plagued by common dreams.

The party assembled in the secret chamber at Hearthold Keep. Domi, in the form of the perfect taur sadness, anger, and disappointment reflected in his eyes, as he scrys a picture of things to come: the sky, oily, black, and ominous from destructive fires raging over the islands, the flash and boom of warring magics, and the screams of the wounded and dying. The very ground of Bridge Island soaked in red blood, the mutilated bodies of beautiful mixed race children piled in a heap, as taur against taur, the battle rages 'round the Chosen.

The vision changes and Domi disappears to be replaced by the sickly face of Marteus, leering down at the Chosen from a black and gold throne set high and protected in a crumbling stadium. As the Chosen stand on the field the booming bass of drums, and the frenzy of the crowd, announces the arrival of the god's champions. Vargas, so much larger, so much more menacing, wielding the Black Sword leads his team onto the field.

Mist swirls and the image is obscured. A recognizable voice is heard, "no challenge, really, dumb brutes!" The mist dissipates to reveal a smoky room. Dr. Maurouth, drink in hand, gestures to the wall where an impressive series of mounted and stuffed heads are on display. Addressing his guests, an eclectic set representative of diverse races, "bagged that one on the beach. Brute strength, I give you, but no cunning, no real intelligence. The Chosen recognize themselves, heads stuffed and mounted, suspended in a row high over the mantel piece.

(Fort Save vs DC 25 for all, vs 29 for Zeoll) Sorry for late post. Lost the first one, and had to re-write. Doh!-DM)

Zeoll feels great guilt and sorrow as he dreams this nightmare. It is the story of utter failure. Failure to destroy the sword. Failure to protect the children. Failure to achieve the great task set out for them by Domi. At some level, Zeoll understands that he should resist, fight, and be brave, but his mind and body crumple under the assault. (Needed a natural 20 to save; rolled a 3.)

The taurs fall deeper into unconciousness, all except Flat-top who's system has fought off the powerful 'taggit oil' used to drug his companions. The centaur sleeps normally. Most dream of Domi and Marteus or their heads mounted on a wall. Brahmah dreams that Zeoll is in trouble and can't be woken. [OOC sorry for any confusion - Brahmah also had to make a fort save - to keep the story going I rolled for you Fort=19].

Into each of the rooms creeps Dr. Mauroth to check on the status of his 'guests'. He carefully watches the breathing pattern of each taur and their subconcious reactions to the normal night sounds of the island, trying to determine which taur sleeps and which are drugged into unconciousness.

When he is satisfied that they are truly unconcious, he calls in Kobe and a second half-orc to bind them and cart them away. Each of the taurs is thus trussed and bound and carried away, including Brahmah who was discovered unconcious on the veranda, his vigil overpowered by the drugged food.

The last chamber Dr. Mauroth enters is Flat-top's. He makes his way slowly to the bedside [Move silently=27] and listens to the centaur's breathing...

[OOC - Flat-top can make a listen check vs DC 27 to wake up as Dr. Mauroth enters the room. He can also make a bluff check vs DC 24 to attempt to fool the Dr. into thinking he is truly drugged, if he so chooses].

Kobe and his assistant bind and cart away each of the taurs in succession. They have a small three wheeled contraption for the larger of Domi's chosen, but make do with a basic litter for the wemics.

Flat-top feigns sleep as he is bound and wheeled away, but is able to see a section of hallway wall slide to one side just before he is wheeled down a dimly lit passageway that slopes down beneath the manor.

The ever vigilant and distrustful leader of the Chosen has seen much of the goings on from his position on the veranda and must decide how and when to intercede.

Dr. Mauroth begins moving down the hallway to the last room where he expects to find the last of his 'guests'. Stevens and another large half-orc in a white linen tunic accompany him.

Winterglade
Monday August 7th, 2006 11:08:31 AM

Winterglade rests unconscious on the cart. Centaurs sleep standing upright; he is bound to have a headache if he ever wakes up again.

Brahmah
Monday August 7th, 2006 11:17:56 AM

Brahmah will take GREAT care to avoid being seen, however, it will soon become apparent to the Doctor that the leader is not among his 'prizes'.

By now, Brahmah has pulled his weapons and is ready for about anything.

Why haven't they woke up? What happened? What did I dod different than them... wait a second. I never ate! Damn! Sleep drought! Or something stronger to have knocked out Flat-top.
Brahmah, you bull-brain, why didn't they listen to you!?

As several things pass through his mind, one thing truly bothers Brahmah now. He's alone. The Chosen down. A test? Not by Domi! Marteaus!
"Vargus." He mutters under his breath.

Then he realizes Pah'caw hasn't been around either. If that maniac killed my bird, I have HIS head on a pike!

Paladin Gilia of South Harbor, how would he get a message to him?

(To the DMs...)Tactical and technical questions:

How many servants has Brahmah seen in total?
Has that orc been seen before?
(A: The party has seen about a dozen servants since their arrival, including several half-orcs.)
What sorts of weapons or armor is in the manor house?
(A: There have been ornamental displays of weaponry in the more public rooms, but none of the Chosen seem to have paid much attention to the displays.)
Are there any 'living trophies' in cages within the trophy rooms?
(A: During what limited exploring took place, no 'live' specimens were discovered.)
What sort of animal companions do the Chosen have and would they stay with their masters if they were in danger?
(A: Birds (eagle, raven). It is night. The companions would be roosting in safety somewhere on the grounds.)

BTW, all rations had been ruined during the shipwreck. This was posted in the DM post June 22, 2006 called...the story so far.

PLease answer these question before posting next. :) Please. ;)

(Bob and I have attempted to provide hints/information through every Gather Info, Knowledge, Search, Sense Motive, etc. dice check, but the Chosen have not been particularly curious.-DM Carla)

OK I will just check the bonuses in my CS and make my post according to that.

Fort check: 18+12= 30 > DC, 28. Made the check!!

However, natural 1 for a listen, and 14 for a bluff check...

Having mixed up lots of and all kinds of food, some of which are not adible at all, Toros's body could resist to the poison, as if a troublesome dream after a heavy meal. However he neither hears anything nor knows what kind of impression he has given to the outside. What he is aware for sure is that he and his friends are in great trouble!

OOC: And thank you very much Cayzle for subbing Toros!!

Toros-addendum
Tuesday August 8th, 2006 5:36:38 AM

One thing I should have written about was:

...how Toros's immunity system has gained strength, having eaten all kinds of food.... And how the amount of the food was so much that perhaps the influence of the poison has become so little. So perhaps the big taur has gained a couple of more pounds but not become poisoned.

However as Flat-top has done, he will not resist and allow what the doctor wants to do with him, at least for now.

Sorry, hope this does not make the DM post problematic.

DM Bob & Carla  d20+6=19
Tuesday August 8th, 2006 7:59:49 AM

Gecktar, Rock, Flat-top, Toros, Winterglade, and Zeoll are each carted down the sloping passageways in turn. Toros and Gecktar are deposited in a single rough hewn cell. Zeoll and Flat-top another, and Winterglade and Rock a third cell. Their captors remain unaware that Toros has feigned the effects of the poison, but when Flat-top attempts to activates his tattoo they immediately recognize that their victim is indeed concious and they tighten his bonds even further to prevent any further attempts. [OOC activating a tattoo is a standard action and cannot be easily accomplished by a bound individual.] "Easy there" Kobe calms the centaur "you'll only chafe yourself if you struggle ."

Just as Flat-top and Zeoll's cell is being locked, the alarm goes up. "Kobe" a voice speaks, "There is one missing, the Doctor needs you!"

The Chosen are left in their locked cells while Kobe and his companions rush back to assist the Doctor. The cells are isolated from each other and nothing but stone and earth can be seen through their bars.

In the manor, Dr. Mauroth slips into Brahmah's chamber and immediately recognizes that the room has never been slept in. He calls one of the half-orcs and sends for Kobe. "Tell him we are missing a guest. He may be unconcious on the grounds or he may have avoided our ploy and be waiting for an opportunity to release his friends. We must find him either way." The Doctor retreats down the hallway. "I'll be in my study. Keep me informed of any developments."

Brahmah
Tuesday August 8th, 2006 10:51:48 AM

Hungry, upset, and willing to kill to save his friends, Brahmah decides to lay low in the manor. He assumes it will be impossible to re-enter if he leaves.

(OOC: Did Brahmah hear the command the Doctor gave and if so, did he also hear the statement about his study?)
If so, he will attempt to waylay the Doctor in the study. He tries to remember where the exterior window for the study might be or any interior doors which may lead to the study directly.

If he did not hear the Doctor's command, then Brahmah will attempt to find a secondary way into the 'dungeons'.

If he heard Flat-top, he knows that at least ONE taur is concious and able to fight. He's glad its Flat-top, though, he almost wished one of the spellcasters were awake too!

If encountered on ANY one of his attempts, he WILL fight to kill. None of these folks are honorable OR friendly. NONE HERE ARE INNOCENT! ANd the Chosen were taken in by a ploy of rescue. Brahmah could no longer count on the possibility of a ship bound for this island!

If only the Chosen's animals were around!

(OOC: I will post a spell list from the previous day on the beach. I don't believe I posted one before.)

Winterglade
Tuesday August 8th, 2006 11:01:22 AM

DM Bob & Carla
Wednesday August 9th, 2006 7:48:57 AM

The Chosen of Domi begin waking up from the effects of the poison they were administered just as the first dim light of dawn breaks the darkness. The taurs find themselves two to a cell; Toros and Gecktar, Zeoll and Flat-Top, and Rock and Winterglade. Outside of their immediate cell mate, the taurs are isolated from each other. Some like Flat-top are tightly bound, the rest can free themselves with a little effort. An INT check vs DC 14 reveals to the members of the Chosen that Highlight to display spoiler: {there is an unusal freshness to their cell, no mustiness or dank smell of long forgotten refuse, instead fresh air.}

Brahmah does in fact hear Doctor Mauroth's comments about the study and vaguely remembers a room with a desk halfway down the hallway towards the library. He remembers little more than that having left the library ahead of his companions for the comparative quiet of the veranda. [OOC Brahmah did not hear Flat-Top and does not know the status of any of his fellow Chosen, nor does he know the way to the dungeons or if in fact there really are any.]

The minotaur slips back into the house when Kobe and his assistants disperse and carefully follows the Doctor towards the study. [Please make appropriate move silently, hide, spot and search checks as you go!]

(Int check= 7, Escape Artist check= 6)
The large minotaur wriggles around on the ground, trying to free himself. For a moment, he stops and looks to see if he has everything he was wearing and then begins struggling again. Eventually, he slips his bonds and begins checking his inventory, for, as a mage, he is limited in power without his things.

He then turns his attention to helping Winterglade.

Zeoll concentrates on freeing himself (takes 10 on the escape artist check, or takes 20 if need be). Then he works on freeing Flat-top, if necessary, slashing the ties with his claws.

What about equipment? What belongings do the Chosen have?

Assuming that the cells are locked, Zeoll searches the cell (takes 20 on the search check = 22 untrained).

There I was getting sleepy, but Not quite?
I hope you can follow my though, because the two servants tied me up, but I could not do any thing about it. The next thing i saw was the doctor opening a pannal in the wall, Told the servants to make sure I was tied up tightly, Then to go after the missing one??"

[Int check 11]

Winterglade opens his eyes.

He blinks.

For a moment he wonders if the mansion might have been overrun by some unknown invaders, but the burning aftertaste of poison brings him up to date with the ugly truth.

"Damn, what a Full Moon's Feast."

"Rock, is that you?"

Winterglade makes an effort to assume an upright position. He starts to struggle with his bonds [Take20 on Escape Artist: 21]. If this doesn't work and Rock is unable to free himself either, he suggests that Rock tries to chew through Winterglade's bonds.

If finally freed, he checks if the poisoners have left any of his posessions on his person.

Then he looks around the cell, examining the bars at the door and window (if there is a window), and then the lock itself (if accessible) [Take20 on Search: 21].

"You know, with these people we wound up travelling with it is rare when there are three days in a row without some kind of disaster. So far Winterglade has lived through a gauth attack, a shipwreck, and a nasty undead encounter. And Brawler alone knows how we are going to get out of this one."

DM Bob & Carla  d20+12=13
Thursday August 10th, 2006 7:47:22 AM

Dr. Mauroth is busy in his study when an invisible Brahmah first spots him. He seems unaware of the taurs presence and remains bent over his desk some 20 feet from the doorway. [Failed listen check; Nat 1 to hear Brahmah]

The room is approximately 20x30 feet and a large desk occupies the southwest corner, two large wing-backed chairs sit on either side of a smaller chart table in the eastern half of the room A large stuffed bear stands menacingly by the desk, and a number of mounted animal heads hang from the walls.

The captured Chosen have all awakened. They experience a variety of after effects of the drug they ingested. Nauseau, thirst, and at least in Flat-Tops case, a pounding headache. After releasing themselves from their bonds they discover that they are essentially without belongings. They are clothed, any armour they were wearing at dinner remains in place along with their jewelery, amulets, and totem bags, but their weapons and other possessions have either been taken or remain in their chambers.

Rock
Thursday August 10th, 2006 9:08:37 AM

"Yes. It is me." Rock's voice rumbles, his hands fidgeting with pouches. In one hand he rolls a ball of something white and foul smelling before dropping it back into a pouch. "I believe it is time we affect an escape."

The minotaur pulls a bit of wool from a small belt bag and nods at his cellmate. "I am going to make a very loud noise. Signal me when you are ready."

Brahmah will carefully approach the chart table, looking for blue prints of the facility.

He will remain in the room, standing near the doors (but not SO close they will swing into him if opened!).
The ranger is not willing to jeopardize the Chosen by killing the Docter here and now. If he did that, the Chosen would surely be executed for the transgression.

He will keep in mind the time frame in which he took his potions so that when their time frame is up, he will execute Plan A: Using the Doctor as collateral for the Chosen and any possessions they are missing (a rational and logical thought by the military-minded taur leader.... who would capture folk without disarming them first!).

DM Bob & Carla  d20+12=29
Friday August 11th, 2006 7:57:55 AM

The captive taurs begin to gether their wits and take inventory of their meagre possessions. Zeoll's search of his cell reveals little. It is a simple cavern, hewn from rough stone. The bars are metal and very resilient, at least to his feeble attempts to dislodge them so far. There are a number of scratch marks near the bars and in a few other locations about the cell. It would take an experienced tracker to determine if they were made by an intelligent race or by some wild beast.

Rock and Winterglade consider the use of magic, and Rock prepares to make some noise. Toros checks Gecktar and takes stock of his own provisions. Despite fighting off the poison, the wemic is as ill prepared for whatever comes next as his companion. [OOC When the Dr. came calling Toros feigned unconciousness - no time to secret something on your body]

Doctor Mauroth straightens up at his desk and closes the ledger he had been examining. A large wingbacked chair sits next to the chart table and he takes a seat in it. "So" he says looking towards the door. "Do you know what you will do next? or are you waiting for animal instinct to take over?" The Doctor has clearly heard the Captain of the Chosen enter the room and has taken the chair opposite the chart table from the door and from where he heard the sound of the taur's advance. "Brahmah, isn't it? I must commend you. Invisible and reasonably stealthy. Kobe is unlikely to track you down."

[OOC did not wait for your move silent check - Listen of 29 beats your take twenty]

(OOC: Um, weren't I supposed to make a roll for moving? I work nights and you didn't give me time to respond. I was asleep by 2pm and didn't get back tot he computer until 5am!!! I know you beat any roll I could have made, but its the principle of the matter. Move Silently 16)

Brahmah doesn't speak or move.

The Doctor has a desk between him and the taur. He was trying to provoke Brahmah into moving or acting. The man was trying to keep him distracted.... so his goons would have time to return to the study and report in, to find the taur there.
There he sits, arrogant and thinking he has the advantage... Brahmah was mere steps from the man. (Brahmah has 10 foot natural reach... how far does Brahmah have to more)

(Where there windows behind the desk? If so, how large? If not, whats there? Does the bear seem 'dead'? Are there plants in the room? If so, are they large enough for the Entangle spell to work on? Where are they placed? How stout is the desk? Could it support Brahmah's weight?)

Jay - you should have rolled as part of your original post, I tried to give you the opportunity but felt I had to move the game along for the others

OOC WEEE! A Natural 20! I'm going to do Lotto next!!! But I still rolled only a 26 for a strenth check.

Flat-top goes the the bars, he puts his right hand on one of the bars, then steps side ways, puting his left hand on the bar sclosest to the first.
Now Flat-top takes a few deep breath, "huff(pulling in air) - Shhh (letting the air out)and Pushes the first bar and pulls the second bar (he now look much like an archer pulling and pushing on a bow), with all his might he tries to bend those Bars.

Toros
Saturday August 12th, 2006 10:24:30 AM

Toros feels stupid, as he could not do anything, when he and his friends were tied up and carried to the cells, while he was awake and conscious. It would have been better for him, if he would have been poisoned as the others, which would at least be an excuse for him for not being able to do anything.

However, being aware of his surroundings is not such bad, as he could hear the inspiring voice of Zeoll. Would it be possible for Toros to take his time (take 20) to bend the bars!?!? Come on, Toros, it is not only for your own self, but also for Gecktar, and for all the Chosen and the Wold!!

Rock
Saturday August 12th, 2006 10:41:13 AM

Leaning against the bars to see down the hallway, his arms moving in a final circut, Rock brings his hands together sharply, the palms connecting on a small bit of wool, but rather than a slapping sound, the cell is filled with the loud roar of an invisible firey explosion at the very end of the hallway.

Ghost Sound
Illusion (Figment)
Level: Brd 0, Sor/Wiz 0
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Effect: Illusory sounds
Duration: 1 round/level (D)
Saving Throw: Will disbelief (if interacted with)
Spell Resistance: No

Ghost sound allows you to create a volume of sound that rises, recedes, approaches, or remains at a fixed place. You choose what type of sound ghost sound creates when casting it and cannot thereafter change the sound's basic character.

The volume of sound created depends on your level. You can produce as much noise as four normal humans per caster level (maximum twenty humans). Thus, talking, singing, shouting, walking, marching, or running sounds can be created. The noise a ghost sound spell produces can be virtually any type of sound within the volume limit. A horde of rats running and squeaking is about the same volume as eight humans running and shouting. A roaring lion is equal to the noise from sixteen humans, while a roaring dire tiger is equal to the noise from twenty humans.

Ghost sound can enhance the effectiveness of a silent image spell.

Ghost sound can be made permanent with a permanency spell.

Material Component
A bit of wool or a small lump of wax.

DM Bob & Carla
Monday August 14th, 2006 8:12:27 AM

The captive taurs struggle to come to grips with their new reality. Zeoll encourages Flat-top to bend the bars of their prison. The centaur readies himself and applies his prodigious strength to the task. Muscles tense, veins bulge, and all that results is a slight "creak" from one of the bars.

Toros also physically tests the bars of his cell to no avail. [OOC Toros cannot hear Zeoll - the cells are completely isolated from each other]. Gecktar frees himself from his bonds and provides his companion with illumination.

Rock casts his spell and the load 'thwump' of air rushing before an explosion followed by the explosion itself can be heard from down the hallway. Winterglade watches on with curiosity.

Brahmah, invisible but discovered stands opposite a chart table from the seated Dr. Mauroth. A distance of just 10' separates the two, but the table stands in the way. The Doctor continues his chiding of the leader of The Chosen. "It must be hard to decide how to act...do I charge through the table and attack, do I negotiate, do I try subterfuge...so many options." The doctor rises and stands behind his chair [now 15' away], a pull chord with a large tassle hangs from the ceiling some 10' away near the corner of the room.

The taur interposes himself between the chord and the man with a single movement, still not talking, but not afraid to make noise since the man knows he's there.
(Having made a move action, Brahmah readies to attack the man if he moves toward the rope.)

Brahmah knows the doctor has considerably less options than the minotaur, however, there are still ways for the rope to be pulled (he assumes). Magic, another invisible guard Brahmah doesn't see/hear or even if Brahmah cuts it (which isn't an option).

He's made up his mind, the man will die.

(OOC: Can I assume that Brahmah has a clear charge of the Doctor now that he has moved to the side with the rope? I would like a rough layout of the room please. I'm a very visual person and to try to figure this out is confusing me. :) Thanks.)

Winterglade
Monday August 14th, 2006 3:19:22 PM

"Oh. Hm. Winterglade kind of hoped you would have Shatter or something similar. What now? If the servants come maybe we can pretend we have killed ourselves with a fireball and hope they will open the door to investigate - or do you have something else planned?"

Winterglade listens for a moment to see if the sudden explosion got any reaction from the minions of the Doctor.

Then he turns to Rock, not sure if the minotaur has another card up his sleeve.

[The rest of the post is conditional, please assume Winterglade carries out the plan below only if nobody shows up to investigate the explosion AND Rock does not suggest anything new.]

Winterglade thinks for a moment. He looks at the iron bars. Then he looks at the ceiling. He takes off his mithral chainshirt. Carefully he folds it two times, so that he gets a belt of mithral that is as long as possible. The sleeves ought to help here. Then he casts Enlarge Person on himself. This ought to make the fold even longer. He approaches the bars blocking the exit from the cell and ties himself to one using the folded chain. He firmly secures the knot around his lower waist. Then he braces himself against the side of the cavern, carefully putting his hind legs on the wall of the cell, until his body is supported only by his two rear legs at the back and the band of mithral in the front. He rests as much of his weight as he is able on the mithral fold tying him to the bar, using it to push hard on the bar. If this procedure manages to break the iron bar or dislodge it from the mortar anchoring it (or, more likely, warp and break hinges supporting the moveable parts), he repeats it until he has removed enough bars for him (unenlarged) and Rock to pass through.

[Dear DMs, I'm not sure how to make a call on this one. Winterglade, when Enlarged, weighs 9600 lbs. Assuming he managed to position himself at an angle of 45 degrees from vertical he exerts a pressure of around 6750 lbs (a bit more than 3 metric tons) on the bar in the horizontal direction. It would take a creature with Str around 40 to lift that kind of weight over its head.]

Rock
Monday August 14th, 2006 5:42:20 PM

"Unfortunately, I had not planned for this eventuality. My hope was to get the guard that I assume is around close enough to kill and then to try to get a key off of him. If you have a plan, feel free to enact it."

OOC: I though the DM bob and DM Carla said the we were strip of our armor, weapons, bracers, ring and amulets. To me that means that we are in our linen shirt only?

Well, maybe the claws of the Liontaurs.

What do you say My DMs??

[Marcin OOC]
Tuesday August 15th, 2006 3:40:33 AM

[Ceil, check the DM post made on August the 10th and mine from July the 18th. BTW, I made a mistake, it's somewhere around 4000 lbs of horizontal pressure, depending on the mass distributon in the body of a centaur.]

DM Bob & Carla
Tuesday August 15th, 2006 8:25:53 AM

The resourceful taurs continue in their attempst to break free from their imprisonment.

Flat-top discovers just how strong his prison is. The bars are thick, solid and unbendable, at least by his strength, although he did hear a creak. From a distance he hears the sound of an explosion but it seems to be some distance away. Zeoll peersd through the bars but cannot see much other than a rough hewn hallway of stone. He sees no locking mechanism.

Toros and gecktar also apply their physical prowess to the bars but to no effect.

Rock's explosive sound garners no special attention, at least not yet. Perhaps their captors are busy...

Winterglade removes his armor, and folds it lengthwise to creat an awkward rope. He casts his spell and grows in size untill he must crouch to avoid bashing his skull on the rock ceiling above. He does his best to tie himself to the bars and pushes with all his might, but the jury-rigged rope is quite short and he has difficulty positioning himself in any way to apply the kind of leverage he had imagined.

[OOC I'm having trouble with this concept. Trying to tie a knot in a chain shirt would be extremely difficult, and the resulting rope would be very very short. I doubt an enlarged centaur would be able to do much other than lean back, it would be difficult to apply pressure. Please give me two dex checks, one to tie a decent knot in the chain shirt (DC 18), and the other to manage to position yourself (DC 15)- remember to add the minuses for your new size]

Brahmah moves to intercept Dr. Mauroth and positions himself between the Doctor and the rope. For his part the Doctor backs away from the rope, keeping the chart table and chairs between himself and Brahmah. "So, you intend to kill me. Well, what keeps you? Do you intend to overrun my home and its residents single-handed? What of your friends? Will they survive your rampage? Alot to think about, isn't it?" The Dr is once again 10-15 feet away from where he thinks brahmah is and has partial cover from the table and chair.

[A map of the room will be sent out later.]
[OOC Those who were wearing armor at dinner - a funny thing to wear at dinner - still have their armor]

Zeoll stops Flat-top before he hurts himself. "No, my frriend, we do not have the strrength to brreak out this way."

"The thing I do not underrstand is how we got in herre. Therre is no doorr, therre is no lock. Maybe therre is a secrret doorr in a wall orr in the floorr orr ceiling. Let us search again really well."

"Why don't we take ourr time, searrch rreally well, and you can help me look."

[OOC: can Zeoll take 20, while Flat-top Aids Another? Ceil, roll a search check vs DC10 to give Zeoll a +2. Zeoll's untrained search is a +2, thus a 24 taking ten if Flat-top beats a ten on his roll.]

Also, Zeoll looks in the hallway through the bars. Is there dust? Tracks? Signs of Taurs being dragged?

DM Bob & Carla
Wednesday August 16th, 2006 8:03:12 AM

The Chosen work industriously to free themselves. Winterglade imaginatively ties a knot in his chain shirt and somehow squirms between it and the bars of his cell. Between pushing and leaning back with his enlarged form, he is able to bend one of the bars inwards. It creates a space large enough for a normal sized taur to stick his head through, but not large enough to allow escape.

[OOC Marcin - please continue to make your own rolls]

Rock watches with fascination as his companion's idea seems to be working. As for his own belongings, they are sparce. His belt and bandolier remain either in his quarters or are in the possession of his captors. [OOC they would have stripped him of such obvious things as wands and bandoliers. It is also unlikely in my mind that Rock would have slept in full gear.]

Flat-top continues to work at the bars of his cell but to no avail. Zeoll has a carefull look around his cell. By the signs of traffic in the hallway it seems clear to the wemic that he was brought in this way, which must mean that the bars are part of a door with a mechanism either well hidden or remotely operated.

Gecktar calls forth a spiritual hammer to beat on the bars of his cell. The sound of hammer on steel rings throughout his cell [OOC you need to roll damage to overcome any hardness of the bars]. Toros watches on.

An awkward silence falls between Brahmah and the Doctor in their standoff, but time still passes and Brahmah must be wondering when Kobe or any of the others might return to report in to their superior. [Please make a listen check vs DC 10 to hear the sound of booted feet at the end of the hallway]

[OOC sorry about the delay I have been unable to get the map to work - the room is 8 cells wide, 5 cells deep. The tassled rope is in the upper left corner. The table and chairs are in the center-left of the room and the desk is in the upper right corner. Bramah is standing right by the tassled rope with the Dr. 3 cells (15') to the right and partly concealed behind one chair]

Zeoll
Wednesday August 16th, 2006 8:31:02 AM

Zeoll tells Flat-top that the bars do seem to be the only exit. However, the mechanism that opens the bars must be hidden, maybe in the stonework above or below them.

Therefore, Zeoll casts a Summon Nature's Ally II spell (spontaneously over a Tree spell) and gives commands to the earth elemental summoned (in its native Terran language). The elemental is to use its earthglide ability to look inside the stone for a mechanism to raise or lower the gates. Maybe for a counterweight. If it can activate the mechanism, maybe it can open the bars. Or at least tell Zeoll something about how they open. Is there an open space above the bars into which they ascend? Or a space below? Or hinges? A lever, hidden space, secret panel, etc?

Note: The spell lasts only three rounds, and the elemental must leave enough time to report back!

Winterglade lets go of the bar and takes a deep breath. "There's one." He re-folds his chain and tries the same trick again. Unfortunately, the knot keeps undoing no matter how hard he tries to make it endure. After three futile attempts [I'd say he has time for about that many tries?] his spell expires. The centaur sighs and puts his armor back on.

"Winterglade is saddened to say that he has run out of ideas. Unless you have a reducing magic handy we are stuck."

But the centaur is not in a habit of giving up that easily. After a moment he invokes Detect Magic and scans the surroundings on the odd chance that some spell hanging in the air might provide a clue as to how to escape. After that, as a way of keeping his mind busy, he directs his attention to the scribblings on the walls.

In Dr. Mauroth's study...

The slap of leather soles on marble signals to Brahmah that at least two and possibly more individuals are making their way down the corridor at a normal pace. The captain of the Chosen decides to make his move and launches himself at his host in a brutal assault. His first attack catches the Dr. off-guard and the falchion slices across his chest leaving a gaping wound, the second also hits but to less effect. The remaining two attacks are blocked by the chair (-4 concealment).

"The boat has docked, and the guests are positioned for the hunt. When shall we release the..." The sentence remains unfinished as Stevens stands in the doorway, eyes staring and mouth agape. From his position, Brahmah can see the manservant is flanked by two large half-orc attendants.

"Go. Release the quarry immediately. I will join you soon. Leave this one to me! " comes a command in a cold, hard voice, and with a ringing sound the doctor unsheathes his sword from beneath his flowing cloak. He spits some blood to the floor. "You'll pay for that!" The large sword flashes twice and Brahmah feels a terrible cold penetrate his body as the blade sweeps across his flesh [Hit AC 26 and 27 for 14 and 9 HP plus an additional 5 +3 Frost damage].

Brahmah, Spot DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { to notice that the blood flowing from the Doctor's wounds inflicted seems to dry up and the wounds appear to begin to seal themselves.}.

Meanwhile, back in the cells...

As the taurs work on their escape, the scraping of rock on rock comes from somewhere behind them, and what had appeared to be solid rock at the back of the cell rolls away to reveal...

Toros and Gecktar smell the salt air of the sea, and turn to see a rocky beach just beyond the confines of their cell.

The brightness of the sun splashes into the cell shared by Zeoll and Flat-Top, as the golden heads of tall grasses bend and ripple in front of them.

Winterglade and Rock feel the humidity, and smell the recognizable mustiness of the rainforest they had sought to avoid earlier in their exploration of the island. The dappled green light of the sun filtered through many green leaves dances just beyond their prison.

Although there are three different views for each of the pairs, each individual spots a collection of gear in a neat pile just beyond the exit from their cell.

(Um, just a question... but if the 'Doctor' recieved some sort of concealment from the chair, shouldn't that have ALSO applied to Brahmah? :))

The minotaur strikes back, with words. "I see I was right about you Mauroth, you seem to know something of brutality too." Then he notices the wounds heal(spot 19). "Aw, your full of surprises Doctor. So, what are you exactly? Your experiments, right? Were on you and those minions I assume. Lets see... troll, lycanthrope... not a vampire? Hmmm... Zeoll says to Flat-top, "Come, put on yourr gearr, my frriend. Although I fearr that is it trrapped in some way."

Zeoll casts Detect Magic (Bard 0 spell) and looks for magical auras on his gear and on Flat-top's that are out of the ordinary.

"In my heart I fear that we are being released only as a test of some kind, or to be hunted."

As Gecktar eyes accustom to sun's light he come close from the entrance...

"Friend, you was right. We have found a way to escape... But this is strange... Why making us prisoners and then release us..."

"There is something odd behind this. I going firts outside, please watch my back... I'm feeling there is a trap here..."

Gecktar come close from the entrance and get out looking at the pile of gear not far and trying to see if it is their own equipment.

Winterglade
Friday August 18th, 2006 4:31:43 AM

Winterglade blinks the tears out of his eyes until they readjust to the sunlight. He exits the cell and looks around.

"Now that is an interesting turn of events, no? It's a Hazelmane's Riddle what's going on."

The centaur notices the pile of equipment and leans in to examine it closer. If it is his and Rock's gear he carefully examines it to check if anything is missing and then puts all his belongings back on his person.

"What do you make of this situation, Rock? We can't be too far away from the mansion, yes? Maybe we should sneak up to there and look for some answers?"

"You any good at reading tracks?"

The centaur takes a look at the ground around the cell [Take10 on Spot:14]. He knows next to nothing about tracking, but if they have been dragged here on a cart of some sort then maybe it has left a trail that stands out enough to be followed even by untrained eyes?

"I wonder what happened to others?"

Then an uneasy thought passes through Winterglade's mind. Wait a moment. We met Rock here, at the island... How do I know he is not a servant of that man?

Friday August 18th, 2006 8:07:11 AM

As Zeoll moves cautiously towards the pile of gear, a large stony humanoid emerges from one side of the opening in the cave. The expressionless face has a cold appearance; however two eyes glitter like multifaceted gems with...what is it...pride? Flat-Top hears a grinding sound like stone on stone, but only Zeoll understands the earth elemental's report as it tells how it found a mechanism, made, not by nature. As commanded by the wemic, the elemental tried the mechanism, and it yielded to the summoned creature's touch. With a sweep of a strong stony arm it indicates the opening, and then bit by bit the creature crumbles and becomes once again one with the earth from whence it sprung.

Zeoll's preliminary investigation reveals nothing but auras with which he is comfortably familiar, for the gear is all his and Flat-Top's. A quick assessment reveals nothing has been altered or tampered with.

Unfamiliar with the environs, Winterglade none the less makes an attempt to find a trail. Beyond the pile of gear he recognizes as his and Rock's, there is a path going off through the jungle. The untrained eye of the centaur can tell by the bushes and vines encroaching upon it, that it hasn't been used in a while. There are some footprints in the immediate area around the pile of gear, but they originate from the new cell opening in the rock. Winterglade wonders about Rock's loyalty as the reality of their predicament settles in. Will he be able to trust the newest member of the Chosen?

Gecktar exits his cell concerned that he may be escaping his jail only to be trapped in another. Nothing happens as he tentatively approaches the pile of gear that he recognizes as belonging to him and his companionToros.

Back at the manor,

Brahmah taunts the doctor, and then follows up his words with another savage attack as he moves further into the room, his back against the wall. Nimble on his feet, the doctor appears to be a practiced swordsman. You are quicker than you look 'Chosen'. The Doctor acknowledges the taur's success so far, "but blind aggression alone will not win a fight". With that the Doctor tumbles [Tumble=27] back out of the minotaur's range [to G4] and swings his fist through the air in a downward striking motion. The air around Brahmah is instantly filled by swirling, ricocheting bolts of energy that pound at his body.[OOC Take 24 HP damage and be slowed for 4 rounds - Will save vs DC 17 to halve the damage and avoid being slowed]

Knowing something is up, the magus leans stomps over to his pile of belongings, grits his teeth and grabs ahold of his spellbook while muttering "If they've hurt my books..."

Barring explosion or whatnot, he puts on his gear, checking everything as he goes, looking for anything unfamiliar as much as checking for anything going missing.

"Winterglade is very good at healing, but he doesn't do killing. So, if something unpleasant runs into us, Winterglade will try to keep you alive and draw away the attention of as many foes as he can, and you do whatever comes natural, yes? Speaking of staying alive, there is one spell he would like to cast now."

[Shield Other: would give Rock +1(Deflection) to AC and +1(Resistance) to saves, as well as transfer half of the damage taken by Rock to Winterglade. Duration 6 hours, must stay within 55 ft of each other or it ends. Assuming Rock agrees to accept the spell:]

Winterglade takes a simple platinium band from his pouch and hands it to Rock. "Here, put this on. Just keep in mind that doesn't mean we are engaged now." Then the centaur weaves his magic with an incantation of soft words.

"What now? That path doesn't appeal too much to Winterglade, mostly because it's the only obvious way leading away from our cell. But we might have no choice but to take it; there is no point in wandering around aimlessly through the forest. Maybe if there is a vantage point somewhere we could get our bearings. Rock and Winterglade don their gear. Everything they brought to the manor house has been restored to them intact, with no signs that it has been tampered with. The newest member of the Chosen is offered a ring, and protective magic by his centaur companion, who suggests they get a move on.

Quietly Gectar and Toros approach their gear, wary of a trap.

A suspicious Flat-Top recons the area before approaching his and Zeoll's gear. Finding that their equipment has been completely restored to them, he quickly dons his gear, advising his companion they must remain alert. The piebald centaur's ears twitch, when he hears a sound in the distance. A long, drawn out Ahhhooooo from some horn. Each pair of the separated Chosen hear the call of the horn. Listen DC vs 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { to hear the sound of two other horns at some great distance. }.

Then, with a slow grinding sound, stone once again seals the exit from the cells in which each of the pairs was held.

In the study...

Weapon's and magics flash in the study, but the heavy velvet curtains shrouding the walls absorb the sounds. Brahmah and Dr. Mauroth trade words, and though the captain of the Chosen is sorely wounded, he can see that his blades have cut his enemy. (Dr. Mauroth's AC=24). Stepping away from the minotaur and his slashing weapons (H5), the doctor chides, "you belittle that which you do not understand. Only a superior intellect can comprehend the intricacies involved in freeing one's mind from the constraints imposed by others in order to let magic flow freely." Waving a hand, and uttering foreign words in a harsh, guttural, croaking voice, the doctor calls down a magical darkness that fills the entire room (Deeper Darkness-Brahmah will need to roll 20% miss chance on all attacks.)

Brahmah (AC 22, hps 38/93, Comprehend Languages and Read Magic , Pro from Evil)
Monday August 21st, 2006 11:29:39 AM

Having the ability to understand his words, Brahmah translates exactly so the Doctor knows that he isn't the ignorant minotaur he believes he is.

Knowing the position of the door just seconds before, the rangers gropes along the wall, moving toward the door. (All he does is move to the end of his full move out the door until reaching light.)

Zeoll gathers his gear and dons it.

He listens to the horn (rolls a 15!) -- He tells Flat-top that he heard THREE horns in fact.

Zeoll believes that he and Flat-top are not being set free through charity or good will. He thinks that if they stay, they will be slaughtered, and if they flee, they will be chased.

He says this to Flat-top and adds, "I am not worrried forr myself, old frriend, because the jungle will aid a son of Motherr Wold, and I will neverr be found. But you arre in dangerr, because yourr hooves will leave a trrail."

"Do you have any way to shrrink down, or become lighterr, so I can carrry you? Orr some way to make me biggerr orr much strrongerr?"

"I can make one of us invisible, but yourr hoofprrints will still give you away."

The liontaur will not chat for long, but instead leads Flat-top towards the nearest patch of jungle.

Toros  d20=18
Monday August 21st, 2006 9:13:06 PM

Toros shares the same sense of hesitation and trouble with Gecktar, when he follows and gets his gear. The taur takes some time to think what to do, while he readies all his equipment for a coming battle. Now they are out back on the beach, the way back to the cell is closed and some horn - inviting or warning them can be heard easily. But it sounds like there is more to that...(made the listen check)

"Gecktar, can you hear the two other horns coming from distance? These three horns could tell where the Chosen are. What do you suggest? Should we move and look for the others, or wait here to be found by them; and most probably before, by some monsters who have been waiting for playing with us...."

Toros looks at the cell building and surroundings to try to understand any physical or magical features that have placed the Chosen in a game that Doctor wants them to play in such way.

Toros - addendum
Monday August 21st, 2006 9:29:18 PM

Then the taur tries to get a feeling of where Doctor's mansion could be located.

"Well, Gecktar, hard to make up my mind really, but your suggestion to find Doctor's Mansion is a good idea, I think - meanwhile lets get ready for the worse."

DM Bob and Carla
Tuesday August 22nd, 2006 7:53:11 AM

Foremost in Zeoll's mind is concern for his companion as the two taurs strike off through the grassy plain. Flat-Top is worried about traps, but the friends' path is unimpeded. The wemic looks for a wooded section, or jungle, but other than the rocky outcropping that was their jail, he sees only tall grass that bends under the constant presence of the wind, and the clear blue of the early morning sky. Zeoll tells Flat-Top he heard more than one horn as they move off together.

Rock fumbles a bit as he gears up, trying to control his nervous excitement. (OOC: Honest mistake about the spells. Just scratch two of the appropriate level off the list and go from there.-DM Carla) The sound of the horn concerns Winterglade who suggests he and his companion get moving. The centaur looks for a vantage point, but sees only the lush green of the jungle encroaching on the pair. Feeling he has no choice, he leads the way down what seems the only path.

Gecktar's first thoughts are for his friends and how he and his companion might rejoin them. The minotaur suggests returning to the mansion. Sharing his friend's concern, Toros takes a moment to study his environs and compare it with what he already knows about the island. From the appearance of the beach before him, as well as the position of the sun, and the direction of the wind, the wemic knows this is not the beach on which the group had landed and previously explored. He remains confused on how to find the manor house. (OOC: Toros take 10 on Survival = 13)

In the impossibly dark study...

Weapons in hand, Brahmah lurches for the door, exiting into the light of the hallway. (Brahmah, Listen DC vs 18 Highlight to display spoiler: { to hear the 'click' of a door latch from somewhere inside the study} and Spot DC vs 18 Highlight to display spoiler: { to see the shadowy form of the doctor slip behind the heavy curtains.}.)

One of his large hands grips a wand, the other a black feather.

DM Bob and Carla
Wednesday August 23rd, 2006 8:10:55 AM

Toros tries to orient himself, with help from Gecktar. The wemic has a general idea of what the island looks like, having had a quick look at the map on Doctor Mauroth's desk, but he doesn't know where he is in relation to the mansion. He is able to deduce that he is not on the beach on which the party was shipwrecked, and in likelihood is on the beach on the opposite, or western side of the island. The beach stretches from north to south. The beach is backed by steep cliffs on one side and bordered by water on the other. Toros remembers that the mansion was situated in the south western half of the island. The sound of the horns seems to come from the interior of the island, but one is closer to the party than the others.

Rock indicates to Winterglade he can get the pair airborn, but the centaur cautions the minotaur that they must remain close to each other for the cleric's protection to extend to his companion. Rock then reaches out to his flying companion. He senses that his link to the bird is very weak, a sure sign that the raven is far from him, and he hopes the bird heeds his call.

Flat-Top's concern is well placed. While Zeoll's golden pelt provides some measure of concealment in the belly high grass, the pie-bald centaur stands out like a sore thumb. The wemic finds the terrain similar to the open area the party had crossed after exploring the southern end of their beach, and climbing a rocky bluff. He can not tell if it is the same area though. He and his companion spot some rocky mounds providing relief in what appears to be an unending vista of golden grass. The nearest outcropping is to the south.

Back at the mansion...

Brahmah takes a breather, and prepares his weapons. Explore the mansion further, try to find the doctor, or make his escape? The captain of the Chosen considers his options.

The door to the doctor's dark study remains open. The hallway stretches along a north-south axis, with windows facing west across the gardens. It is early morning.

(OOC: I assume that the sun in the Wold rises to the East? Sets West?)

After finishing his silversheen, this round, the minotaur steps to the west window. The grounds are likely still dark as the sun is rising behind him and the house is casting shadow.
He peers outside looking for anything of interest (spending about 5 rounds). The Doctor. The Chosen. Ships? The Hunters? Goons?
If he sees any of these he will move to meet them, likely breaking the window and jumping outside to keep an eye on the quarry.

If he sees nothing, he will move carefully back into the dark room and head down the passage completely aware there are likely traps, mundane or magical that will block his path. First however, he will attempt to search for papers, maps or books detailing some of the Doctor's activities. Those documents are likely in his desk.

The poor minotaur isn't thinking straight. He is aware of the hallway still however. (Spot 31, Listen 20)

"I suggest to follow the beach my friend. It is open space separating the sea and inner parts. If danger comes from any of these, we can escape to the other. Assuming that what we may encounter on the way would be very much territorial, unless another special welcoming party is waiting for us. I wonder what will come out of from these horns..."

Then the wemic continues, "Gecktar, could you please tell what have you prepared today for the spells you can cast? They could also help to determine what and how to do..."

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday August 24th, 2006 8:18:50 AM

At the mansion...

Brahmah tries to get a grip and make the best decision he can. Beyond the windows, he sees the fountains, lawn, and flower beds of the gardens through which he and his companions had previously approached the mansion. Two worker-types tending to the maintenance of the property, look up at the sound of Brahmah's whistle and the taur hears the responding screech of Pah'caw. The workers do not see the taur inside the manor house. The windows open out like doors, and give way to the minotaur's touch. There would be no need to break any glass and thus draw attention to himself. Brahmah hears a whistling sound, and looking up in the air, he sees three balls of light go streaking off, each takes a different trajectory, but they all head in a northly direction.

A return to the magically darkened study reveals...only darkness. Brahmah's hand can feel the rich texture of the draperies that envelope the room, but he can see nothing. The taur is on the horns of a dilemma. What to do? He takes a moment to gather his wits. .

Elsewhere on the island...

The taurs decide to put some distance between themselves and the cells in which they had briefly been held captive. Zeoll and Flat-Top head in a southerly direction towards a rocky outcrop, Winterglade and Rock also head south, and discover the canopy of the jungle opens up a little to expose some blue sky. Gecktar and Toros decide against scaling the cliffs, in favor of following the beach.

Facing south, the taurs witness a small bright comet-like ball of light heading in their direction. It is so fast; there would be no way to outrun it. With a whoosh the ball of light flys at breakneck speed to intercept the path of each pair until it stops with a gut wrenching jerk and an explosion of harmless multicolored sparks approximately 10 ft. in front of each pair. The multicoloured ball of energy forms and reforms until it takes on the appearance of a talking head resembling the doctor.

A hollow, echoing voice comes from the magical ball of energy expressing admiration of the bravery, strength, stamina and agility shown by the Chosen as demonstrated in their recounting of their adventures. It speaks, in the doctor's voice, of his own studies of the animals on the island and elsewhere in the Wold of his belief that only the noble races and those with superior skill, intelligence, or strength survive. Finally, there is an explanation: "my guests and I have grown bored with regular hunts, and the constructs I have created lack the imagination to provide a challenge. Your unexpected arrival on my island has provided me with an opportunity to study those of your race, and my friends with an opportunity for a challenging hunt. You have been provided with your equipment and released in pairs. At the sounding of the next set of horns, the hunters, also in pairs, will set out. Any who survive one full turn of the Wold will be provided with safe passage from this isle." At the conclusion of the message, the ball of energy explodes in a harmless shower of sparks.

[OOC: Brahmah does not hear the Doctor's message, nor do the other taurs hear their Captain's whistle.]

Rock
Thursday August 24th, 2006 9:37:19 AM

"Oh. We have some time then? Lovely." the minotaur says flatly, but with the hint of confidence in his voice.

Rock immediately stops and sits on the ground, pulling a metal covered book from his belt.

Without looking up, he says grimly "I suggest you pray."

Brahmah
Thursday August 24th, 2006 5:38:50 PM

Brahmah doesn't hear the speech, but never the less follows the balls of light.

He calls to his eagle again. Once she lands, he says, "Seek the Chosen. Return soon." He takes time to write a small note to the Chosen, rolls it up and puts it in the tiny message tube and ties it to her leg.

Highlight to display spoiler: {Brahmah alive and well at mansion. Doctor hurt and regenerating. I'm hurt in Doctor's office. East side by gardens.}

Paw'caw (ceil)
Thursday August 24th, 2006 6:27:21 PM

Paw-caw finally reaches her master, She land on his hand, She rubs her head on his sholder, then listens to his command.
She is still as her master put's the note in the tube.
When her master lifts her into the sky she takes off to her hights for hunting! Once there she scands the island to the south, in her circle eight pattern.

Winterglade
Friday August 25th, 2006 4:56:22 AM

Winterglade listens to the message in silence. He doesn't speak when the image is gone, either.

Finally he says in a soft tone of voice: "Yes, now, we'll see how it goes, but Winterglade would really loathe to leave this island while the good Doctor is free to continue his practice. But survival first."

"Pray? Winterglade doesn't do that much, he has troubles with the concept of one-sided conversation. He goes for his run every morning and that makes his head clear. Not a prudent thing to do that now. Good thing he still has most of his powers left unused."

"You any good at offensive magic, Rock? Because, as he said, Winterglade has no means of hurting anyone. He usually outruns trouble when he is alone."

[Could we possibly have (at least approximate) time of the day with every DM post, please? Important for spell durations etc.]

Zeoll sets off at a run. He runs for a half a minute, then slows to a hustle. He does his best to head for jungle.
