Look What I Found! ( DM JohnP) Wednesday June 28th, 2006 12:53:00 PM
After Steve and the wagons arrive, things get busier around the plantation.
Syr starts directing the workmen and laborers that came out with Steve. Pretty soon there are people working everywhere - on the mill, the house and the well. While this goes on, Lang helps with the unloading of the wagons.
Steve walsk around and does his part of supervising. He looks over the buildings and grounds., comparing notes with Wynn and the others when he sees them.
"Like I said, not bad place here. I was planning to stick around for a couple days and keep an eye on the crews. Give your man Buckle and his ladyfriend some pointers on setting up. That okay with you? If we need something else, you can look for it when you go back to town tomorrow for the dinner with Ashbeard nad his family."
When Xenia finally emerges from the house with Belkior, she walks over to Angus and shows him most of the things that she has found. The small stone carving looks old, really old. It's so worn and smooth that it's difficult to tell what it might represent. Looking at it carefully, everyone seems to think that it's a spider of some sorts. The smooth green stone isn't something that anyone recognizes, either.
The papers are more immediately revealing. A quick leafing through them reveals that the vampire had been corresponding with a group in Plateau City. In fact, it seems that the vampire may have been part of the unnamed group. One of the letters has a partial address in Plateau City.
Strangely, another paper seems to be discussing Floating City. At least, it provides information about shops and vendors whoe wouldn't ask "too many questions" down on Trash Level or lower.
After lookign over the material,
Xenia d20+7=16 Wednesday June 28th, 2006 3:38:10 PM
"Hey, um, you guys gotta read this stuff." Nose still buried in the papers, the rogue finishes a page and without looking hands it off to whoever might be there to take it. "I think we might be looking at something pretty big here. I mean, really pretty big."
"Hey Steve, you know anything about those Death Cult leaders that everyone was looking for when we left the city? Any rumors as to what they were maybe up to? Stuff like that?" (Gather Information 16)
Famina Wednesday June 28th, 2006 6:07:34 PM
Famina looks at the others read and just kinda nods, taking a sheet of paper and glancing over the items. "Hmmm... hmmm." She makes a thinking face. "huh... Yeah..." Pausing a second, the tall woman leafs back and looks up. "...hrm. Big problems." A minute later, she takes Syr aside and privately asks him, "umm...what did those documents say? I hate admitting it, but the words this guy uses are really long, and, well, reading's not my strong suit..."
Angus d20+15=35 d20+9=25 Wednesday June 28th, 2006 7:19:03 PM
Angus looks over the materials that Xenia found and cast detect magic on them, just to be sure.
Angus looks carefully at the stone carving and whispers "I wish Bralin could see this. I wonder if it is a key or totem of some sort?" Arcane Knowledge 35 (nat. 20!!! if it matters)
Angus starts reading the vampire letters and is wonders who was writting from the other side and who would want to converse with a powerful vampire. "We may have much bigger problems." Things relating to the Floating City too "Hmmm, we have have some evil politics at play." Angus tries to think of what he has gleaned from the Floating city and Plateau City that may be helpful (Gather infomation 25). Angus will spend time with Steve and the laborers to see what he might find out about cults and undead.
Angus calls all of the Wildcards together and gives a hushed talk "This does not bode well. We need to get the kids settled and keep our meeting with Ashbeard. I think we have plenty of questions to ask. We need to find out if the kids are in any danger or if anyone else is for that matter. Maybe a bit of gold in it for us if Ashbeard hires us. We will have to see. That address seems real interesting, maybe we will have time to scout it before our dinner meeting, so we can ask more informed questions. What does everyone think?"
Angus will wait to hear what everyone else has to say and add "If we do decide to scout, we can sen half of us ahead to investigate the area around the address and see what is up with the locals in that area. I think the recon group should be Xenia, Wynn, Syr and Lang for back up. Famina, Belkior and I can Take the cart back. Sorry Famina, but Belkior and I need so protection, these are dire warnings we are reading here." As Angus holds up the vampire papers.
Angus will try to find out from the papers what was the name of the vampire cleric???? and any other names of interest or places???
Syr Wednesday June 28th, 2006 11:14:26 PM
Raising and eyebrow at Xenia's revelations, Syr nods and reaches for his now dry shirt. Before leaving, he makes a final check on the work groups in progress and encourages them with praise for their efforts. After that he moves to the others, "Ready when you are, let's go check out some pasty faced ghouls."
Wynn d20+9=21 Thursday June 29th, 2006 7:46:19 AM
Wynn scans the letters looking for any clues to the rest of the address, or links to any of the people or places he knows of in either Plateau or Floating City [Bardic Knowledge =21].
"Right, when do we leave?" he asks. It is clear that the bard has had enough of the domestic life and yearns for adventure.
Plans for Departure (DM JohnP) Tuesday July 4th, 2006 9:58:12 AM DM Apology - Sorry, all. I should be back on a normal schedule this week.
Everyone stands about and looks at what Xenia has retrieved from the mansion. Angus handles the small stone spider, peering at it from every angle, and comes to the conclusion that there is nothing magical about it. It might have some value, but it doesn't do anything special.
Xenia and Angus both ask Steve and the workers about the death cult. Steve hems and haws, looking aside before he answers.
"Well, Ashbeard, he might know more, you know. Since the wife of one of the Von Otten's was going there, and all. Not to mention the de Montmorency house being almost next door to the family's pile. That's where the cult was meeting, you know."
"What did they want? Well, seemed to me at least, that they was off their rockers 'cause of the Troubles. Some scared of dying, you know. Some wanting to die 'cause their family all died. Some just wanting a thrill, maybe."
Belkior pipes up, clutching the drawing he made of the diagram from the basement.
"I don't recognize much about it but I'm sure that someone in the Cathedral of Light would."
The workmen are more forthcoming, if possibly somewhat inaccurate. They tell tales of zombies raised to fight the Guard, a bunch of adventurers who stormed a mansion flinging spells hither and yon. Very much the same story that Angus heard when leaving Plateau City.
Wynn heard only a few rumours about the dealings with the death cult. The main one was that it was actually a bunch of adventurers from the Trade Quarter, not too far from the warehouse, who broke up the cult. He even heard that the adventurers could probably be found in a tavern called "Sampson's" in the Trade Quarter. The Guard and Constables were now mainly chasing down the fugitives.
When he looks at the address, Wynn thinks that it's a street in Nightmare Quarter. Not too surprising, really, when he remembers that the Quarter is best known for the Temple of Marteaus and the necromancers who have shops there.
Everyone else seems pretty eager to head back to Plateau City. Steve repeats his intention of staying at the plantation to oversee the workmen, helping Kay and Buckle get set up. Under his somewhat rough exterior, Steve seems to be a pretty nice fellow.
The party could head out this afternoon, spending the night on the road, but arriving early enough on the following day to do some investigations before dinner at the Von Ottens. Or, they could wait to travel in the morning.
Angus wants to spend more time reviewing the letters and notes. By tomorrow he will have had enough time to completely review them.
Xenia Tuesday July 4th, 2006 4:33:54 PM
"Ashbeard, huh?" Xenia chuckles. "Relatives in a death cult. Can't help who you're related to." She shrugs and rises to her feet.
"Anywhos, they might like to take a look at some of these papers." She waves the sheaf before putting them back into their leather folio. "Might help them with tracking down this death cult thing. Might as well head back to town."
Before leaving, she sits down with little blonde Kyria.
"You gonna be okay, Punkin? I mean, out here and all. It's kinda way out in the country and all, you know." Xenia hugs the little girl. "You know, I'm gonna miss you. Not that I won't visit and all, you know. But, it's like, you're far away now. And I'll always know that. But this is a good place for you to grow up. It's safe. And you'll learn stuff."
She hugs the little girl again.
"I'll make sure it's a good place to grow up."
Wynn Tuesday July 4th, 2006 7:42:18 PM
"Maybe we should pay these adventurers a visit and find out what they know. They might have come across some clues that link this death cult to the address in the nightmare quarter."
Wynn waits for a response from the party's leaders.
Syr Tuesday July 4th, 2006 11:29:07 PM
Impatiently from the wagon, he agrees with Wynn, "Let's talk about it on the way. It sounds like we may run into more vampires though." Looking over at the barbarian, "Hey Famina, you ready to go now?"
Angus Wednesday July 5th, 2006 9:13:09 AM
Angus takes in all of the groups suggestions and the additional information from Steve and the workmen. "A death cult, how interesting, Yuck." Angus muses. "I still think we need to send our recon group, Xenia, Wynn, Syr and Lang, ahead to check on the address in the Nightmare quarter prior to our meeting with Ashbeard. The four of you can travel light and fast and Famina, Belkior and I will follow in the wagon. We can all meet up prior to our meeting with Ashbeard and exchange notes. Xenia please leave me the papers as I want to go through them again and see if I can find out anything else interesting."
Angus looks at all of the Shields "Its a long journey. Lets all head out. Lets share an ale before our meeting with Ashbeard."
Angus will say goodbye to Steve Kay and Buckle "Good luck. We will see you in a few days or at least send word. Can't wait to see how the place will look after a few day of tender loving care."
Angus climbs in the wagon and waits for Famina and Belkior to join him.
Belkior Wednesday July 5th, 2006 11:23:38 AM
The little halfling cleric feels like he is subject to forces beyond his control. When Angus waves him up into the cart, Belkior hops up.
"Things seem to be happening so fast, Angus. Let's get back to Plateau City and see what we can find out."

Famina Wednesday July 5th, 2006 12:23:58 PM
Famina hops up into the wagon, and plants her awesome new sword next to her carefully, so that it doesn't fall over on anyone else. "A death cult to Marteaus... But the question is, did these other adventurers finish destroying it?" Famina ponders this to herself. But there's now an eager spring in her step. "I agree with Wynn, we should find these other adventurers, and others, too, find out as much as we can about them. And get rid of them... Maybe the city watch or someone will also give us a reward if we do so!"

Back to Town (DM JohnP) Wednesday July 5th, 2006 1:05:12 PM
Everyone prepares to immediately depart the plantation for Plateau City. Like Xenia, some of the Shields take time to say farewell to some of the children that they bonded with most closely.
When Kay and Buckle hear that the Shields are leaving, they come from the house and the barn where they were working. They unconsciously drift together until they are standing side by side near the cart.
"Take care. We'll do our best to look after the children and set this place up," Buckle says. Kay doesn't seem as optimistic but everyone gets the impression that they are both determined to make this place a success.
Steve, of course, is still nearby. When Angus mentions sending word or returning, he nods and waves.
"See ya soon! I'll set these young folks up right, for you and the Von Ottens both."
Then the two parties strike out for the city. As intended, the four people on foot rapidly pull away from the cart and horse carrying Angus, Belkior and Famina.
Walking through the warmth of the afternoon, Xenia and Wynn consider what they might find in Plateau City. When they finally decide to stop and rest for the night, they quickly decide on a watch cycle. For caution and other reasons, they decide to watch in pairs. Naturally, Wynn and Xenia decide to share a watch so Lang and Syr must also share.
At a slower pace, the cart carries the other three to Plateau City. Belkior fusses and worries while Angus reviews the documents. When evening comes for them, Angus has learned a bit more information.
The vampire used the name Sarah, when she was referred to by name at all. More commonly, the letters to her simply used a title like "Dark One" or "Favoured One". From the tone, it seems that she had a position of some power in the cult or whatever it was, probably due to her long existence and capability to manipulate death. It seems that she had knowledge of Floating City both from the distant past and recently, although the recent information seemed secondhand at best. Some of the letters inquired about places to purchase or rent supplies and equipment in Floating City for an expedition. Presumably, of course, into the Crying Woods. But the only clue to the destination of this expedition is a reference to the "Guardians" and, strangely, the accompanying stone statue.
After all that reading, Angus is more than ready to turn in for the night. Famina volunteers to do most of the watching so that the two spellcasters can rest and renew their magics.
+++++
When morning dawns, the four walkers realize that they will reach Plateau City sometime before noon. Striking out on the road once more, they join the steadily increasing traffic towards the City. After a couple hours walking, they see the walls and gates up ahead. Unlike their departure, the Guards at the gates simply look them over even though a long line of people departing the City are being inspected.
After asking about, Wynn is able to get directions to Nightmare Quarter. It's in the southeast corner of the City, near the Falls. As they cross the City, they pass through Trade Quarter and note the location of Sampson's. Finally, the four enter Nightmare Quarter.
It's easy to see why it has the name. In the light of the midday sun the Quarter appears dirty, decrepit and slightly dangerous. Few of the shops and taversn are open but the signs and posters are all of a lurid nature. In darkness, when this Quarter is probably the busiest, there would definitely be a nightmarish quality to it. Especially the large swath of sunken and wrecked buildings that dominates the centre of the Quarter. Looking into that wasted area, the four can see rats and other vermin casually moving among the piles of garbage and debris.
A cloying scent wafts from the Temple of Marteaus when they pass by to reach the address from the letters. Lang has to cover his sensitive nose and Sunshine starts sneezing before the dog sits to wipe at his nose with a paw. The Shields cannot escape the feeling of being watched as they glance up at the vacant windows of the dark stone edifice. The clumps of people clustered like flies outside the Temple of Disease aren't reassuring, either.
When Wynn leads them to the address, the building there is thoroughly decrepit. Most of the windows are unshuttered or broken and the entire building seems to be leaning upon its neighbours for support. A few shops are on the ground floor while the upper floors probably contain apartments. The men, women and creatures lounging on the steps probably live there. One of the figures ... Lang realizes that it's another bugbear under the rags ... begins a rasping cough and hawks a big clot of bloody mucous unto the street near the four Shields.
All in all, not really the place that a powerful cult would probably base themselves in. As the four Shields stand there, it seems that everyone and everything has them marked as being outsiders. Probably because they're clean, well-fed and undiseased.
Looking at one another, the four realize that they probably have an hour or two before the cart arrives at the City. They might investigate further here, or head elsewhere in the City.

Xenia d20+19=33 d20+14=26 d20+2=10 Wednesday July 5th, 2006 4:12:43 PM
Xenia watches the activity around the run down building. No worse than some of the stuff on Trash Level. Folks live here. Or try to. Makes her glad that they found that farm place for the kids.
On parting, she had hugged Kay. She was good for the kids, and it was a good feeling having her there.
"You take good care of her now, you here," the rogue had wagged a finger at the ex-Ensign Buckle and given him a wry smile. She had heard the sounds of the children in the background. Playing, working, calling to each other. A feeling, half joy, half sorrow, both encrusted with just the slightest bit of doubt, had echoed through the chamber of her heart.
Now, looking at the building in this "Nightmare Quarter" place, all doubt is dispelled. The farm is a good place. Better than ending up in a place like this.
"I'm going in," she says to Wynn and the others. "There's a reason the Vampie girl had this address, and maybe looking around will tell us what it mighta been." First is a walk around. Xenia takes note of the kinds of shops on the ground floor. That, and the entrances and exits, deciding which one to use herself.
All the time, she watches the people. Where they're moving, who and what their watching. If they're guards or lookouts, it might be a good thing to push them. Challenge them a bit. They might let something drop.
Trouble is, they all look sort of dangerous. It's hard to tell them apart.

"No." Just one word, and a firm hand on the thin upper arm of the dark half-elf.
The stench of the place is revolting to the half-elf. A clean death at the end of a sword is one thing, but the slow distructive process of disease, quite another.
"Not now, Xenia. Maybe another time. We stay together." The bard-fighter catches the eye of Lang and Syr, as the hand not holding the rogue moves to rest on the haft of his sword. Moving carefully around the destroyed area, Wynn tries to lead his friends out of the Nightmare Quarter and into another area of the city. His hand still firmly around Xenia's arm, he attempts to steer her away from the ruins as he racks his brain for information.

Syr Wednesday July 5th, 2006 11:53:11 PM
Syr looks longingly at the crewmen rebuilding the house and sighs. Turning his back to them he comments to no one in particular, "One of the few times I felt I could accomplish something. I mean... building something. It's just not what these hands are used to. Is it wrong to take pleasure in something so simple?
Once in the town, he silently follows Wynn to the address. Nudging the ranger next to him, he flips a quick wrist gesture at the sickly bugbear. "I know you don't like it, but you looking like a bug bear and all... Do you think you can pump that guy for any info?" He looks worriedly up at Lang, wondering how he will take the question.
Whispering to Xenia, "and you... Did you want to slip into one of your disguises and when you go in and 'reconoiter'? Since we may make a return visit, it might not be a bad idea. Nothing too dangerous mind you. Just something to give our task master of a sorceror more info than what he can get with his own eyes? If you want to risk it, we'll only be a shout away?"
Famina Thursday July 6th, 2006 6:51:39 AM
Famina is stuck with the boring group, not going anywhere near this exciting and disease-filled place. Which is a good thing, because just the sight of it would spur her to action. Instead, she finds herself returning to the city with Belkior's group, minding the way. She greets the guards eagerly, and notices they're wary of emigrants. Interesting. She asks Belkior, along the way, "Say, Alemi's the god of healing, right? Marteaus is his biggest enemy, then?" She seems generally curious. "Do you think that will cause problems, I mean, getting permission to get rid of them? Or do you think the city will let us, if they are doing all these evil things around here..."
Belkior Thursday July 6th, 2006 8:21:58 AM
The halfling cleric almost kind of enjoys the ride in the country. A nice place, safe and relaxing. Of course, there is the potential for accidents. And the insects. Not to mention robbers and other dangers of the road.
Of course, Belkior also realizes that Plateau City won't be completely safe either.
When Famina talks about Alemi and Marteaus, Belkior perks up.
"Well, it's true that Marteaus is the ruler of the Gods of Testing. Just like Alemi is the ruler of the Gods of the Wold. And, yes, Marteaus' aspect of Disease is opposed to Health."
"Really, I don't fully understand why Marteaus and the other Gods of Testing have temples in Plateau. I know that the Gods of Testing exist to provide balance. What is Health but the absence of Disease?"
"But you're right. If the Temple of Marteaus is actually involved in this death cult, the Cathedral of Light will probably provide assistance to 'balance' things out."
Angus d20+9=14 Thursday July 6th, 2006 9:50:26 AM
Angus tells Belkior and Famina the name of the vampire "That vampire we fought, her name was Sarah. I actually liked that name until now."
Angus will attempt to pump the city guard for more information as they reenter Palteau City "How come we were searched on the way out but not on the way in? Did you take care of that death cult. It has a real nervous. I had to hire a body guard." Angus cocks a thumb at Famina.
After leaving the gate, Angus adds "Lets go find a place to get cleaned up and ready to meet the others and Ashbeard."
Belkior - 2nd Illegal Post Thursday July 6th, 2006 10:08:06 AM
The halfling cleric starts fiddling with the wands stored in his haversack. He pulls out the more heavily used and scarred one, sniffing at it.
"Ummm ... why don't we stop by a Catacombs outlet? I need to replace this wand."
Back in the City (DM JohnP) Thursday July 6th, 2006 10:28:18 PM
The four Shields standing outside the tenement struggle with what approach to take. Xenia clearly wants to scout the interior but Wynn reaches out to hold her back. Syr would like more information while Lang simply hangs back and looks menacing.
The indigents and other loiterers certainly are watching the foursome. Maybe it's just because the Shields are obviously out of place. Maybe they might be sources of alms. Or it might be for other reasons. And Xenia can't shake the feeling of being watched.
Wynn' recollections of Plateau City are pretty scattered. This area was always bad, even back when the temple was dedicated to Gargul before the Year of Ascension. But it might be worse, now.
With Wynn leading, the four make their way towards the north gate where the others should be arriving. Actually, since they hadn't agreed on a place to meet they first head to the warehouse where the children stayed.
++++++
Belkior, Angus and Famina come in through the north gate. Angus isn't able to learn much from the guards except that the fugitives are still at large.
The three also head to the warehouse where they can make a quick stop to refresh themselves. And it has the advantage of being close to the livery stable where they rented the horse and cart from.
After a short while, the others arrive. Even taking the time to get cleaned up, there's at least part of the afternoon before they need to be at the Von Otten mansion. Now's the time to decide where else they need to investigate.
Lang & Sunshine Thursday July 6th, 2006 10:54:04 PM
Lang waits patiently while the group decides which direction to go next. He nods in agreement when Wynn suggests leaving the area.
Lang takes Syr's suggestion and turns towards the down-trodden Bugbear. He stands a healthy distance away from the sick creature.
"Down on your luck my friend? What brings you to Plateau City?" Lang asks the creature in common.
After he is done talking with the Bugbear, Lang will take point and lead the group back to the warehouse.
Angus Thursday July 6th, 2006 11:13:34 PM
Angus is glad to have the dust of the road washed from his body and cloths and even happier to see his shield mates arrive. "Good to see you four again and in good health. Find anything interesting out?"
Angus will wait for the other groups reply and then add "It seems whatever fugatives, I am assuming from the death cult, are still at large."
Angus covers his nose at one point "What is that smell? You four best get clean up before our meeting with Ashbeard."
Angus will wait for the others to get ready an then cheerfully suggest "Lets head out to meet the Von Ottens and find out what is amiss. That vampire we killed was in the middle of something big and we need to make sure we have not planted the kids in a dangerous spot. Shall we."
The thin sorcerer make to head out but then call back to the others "Who has direction to the dinner?"
Famina Friday July 7th, 2006 4:45:11 AM
Famina is glad that Belkior's willing to join in against the Marteaus followers. Sometimes it's difficult to know whether priests, especially the famously pacifistic Alemites, will be on your side if you go charging against stuff. "When we give the information to the Von Ottens I bet we'll find the Marteaus' followers have soemthing to do with it," she bets Angus. "You know, this Sarah probably was one of them, to have such a powerful, evil book. Hey, Belkior, did the priest ever tell you anything about who made the book?"
Belkior Friday July 7th, 2006 10:41:53 AM
The halfling cleric looks up when Angus proposes going to the Von Ottens.
"Angus, there might be some time yet to learn more. I'd like to get some more healing magics from the Catacombs. And I really should take this diagram to the Cathrdral of Light. Who wants to go with me?"
After waiting to see if anyone will accompany him, Belkior will make the short trip to the island where the Cathedral is housed. He's been here before when they turned in the book so he seeks out the same librarian. If anyone is likely to recognize and tell him anything about the diagram, it should be that man.
Xenia d20+19=35 Friday July 7th, 2006 11:04:04 AM "They're just folk, Wynn." Xenia turns her eyes up to his. "Just trying to live the best they can. Some just fall into ways that aren't, well, really nice. Mostly, though, you can talk to them."
Still, Xenia just takes Wynn's arm and nuzzles her head against his shoulder. It's hard to resist when he's wanting to protect you. The rogue takes a look back, though, as they're leaving. Weird feeling. Being watched. Of course they are being watched. Everyone watches when new folks come around. But it's more than being watched. She takes one last look to see if it's any one guy in particular she's getting the feeling from. Windows, doorways ... Or maybe it's something else ... (Spot 35)
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
"The banquet's at the Von Otten family townhouse," Xenia replies later after linking back up with the other guys. "How hard could that be to find? We just gotta ask directions."
"I'll go with you, Belkie!" she chimes in. "I never got the chance to see the Cathedral of Light when I came through on the way to Floating City. But we gotta get back in time for a bath. Gonna come, Wynn?"
"So, Vampie Sarah, huh? Sarah the Vampire. Sarah Princess of Darkness." Xenia shakes her head as they walk off toward the Temple of Alemi. "I dunno. Weerd. The name just doesn't seem to fit."
Syr Friday July 7th, 2006 9:50:55 PM
The elf fondles the clip in his hair and speaks to Angus, "Really not much to report." He looks at Wynn pointedly, "WE decided not to scout inside the building. It's in an area like the trash level that seemed rough but harmless. It could certainly use some construction work. The wood was rotting, the actually had mold growing on the support beams. Even the foundation looked a bit off kilter. Other than the tap-dancing vampire troop enticing in evil-doers it was pretty quite." He nudges Famina, "Always end on a positive note, eh?"
Angus "Illegal post" Saturday July 8th, 2006 8:46:39 AM
Angus laughs at Syr's report and slaps him on the back. "I needed that"
Angus looks around. "I did not realize that we had so much time to kill before heading out to the Von Otten's. Lets tour the town. Belkior, maybe you can find out more info at your temple. Lets go."
The Temple's Report (DM JohnP) Sunday July 9th, 2006 11:07:53 PM
Everyone else stays at the warehouse while Belkior and Xenia head to the Cathedral of Light. Belkior leads the rogue through the streets of Plateau City and then the Cathedral until they are back in the library.
The same librarian is again behind the desk and Belkior waits patiently until he looks up and notices him. When he does, Belkior approaches and unfolds his rendering of the diagram from the vampire's shrine. The librarian looks at for a moment before replying.
"So, where did you find this diagram?," the librarian asks.
Belkior answers and the man rubs his chin for a moment.
"Interesting. A very similar diagram was found in a mansion here in town. If you look here," and he points to some of the symbols around the diagram.
"These are old versions of High Woldian symbols for Gargul. From the time before the Year of Ascension. In this case, it looks like some death cult or similar ground might be using these symbols, from the time when Gargul was the evil, to lend some semblance of history or relevance to their group. Of course, that's what we though when the diagram was found here in town."
"But, you defeated an old and powerful vampire who was also a cleric. So maybe there's more than just seeming here."
The old librarian thinks it over for a bit.
"I don't really know more than that. You should probably ask the people involved. Of course, I don't know how to find them since I spend most of my time here in the library."
"Of course, if you should ever want, we do have some of the best records of the Second and Third Ages here in the Temple. When you find out more, you can come back and I'll see what I can dig up for you."
The librarian turns back to his cataloguing, obviously dismissing the pair.
Xenia and Belkior head back through the streets of Plateau City, thinking things over. Maybe it is time to make contact with these other adventurers. But first everyone has to go to the Von Ottens.
Once the pair arrive at the warehouse, there's barely time to wash and finish preparations. Everyone teases Xenia about the effort she makes to get ready for the evening's meal. Finally, as the shadow's lengthen in Plateau City, it's time to head towards the Von Otten mansion.
Belkior and Xenia were most of the way there when they visited the Cathedral of Light. this time, though, the party takes one of the bridges to the west bank of the river from the island that houses the chief temple of Alemi. The party finds themselves in an upscale neighbourhood filled with large homes. The directions provided by Steve are good enough to get the party to a large pile of stone on Mansion Road. Literally a large pile of stone - from outward appearances, it seems that an immense block of granite was deposited in the Quarter, followed by several dozen dwarven stonecutters working on the pile. Unlike their neighbours, the Von Otten home occupies the entire lot without any surrounding gardens or walls. From the street, it's difficult to tell exactly how large the place is. But it's very likely to be the closest that a dwarven clan could come to living underground within the confines of Plateau City.
Standing outside the double brass doors on the street, everyone looks at one another. This should be an interesting evening, by all accounts.
Seeing no other way forward, someone strides up and lifts the knocker on the door and then lets it fall. The clap echoes until the door is opened from the inside. An elderly dwarven man looks out, peering at the party from between his bushy eyebrows and neatly waxed gray moustache.
Who do you be seeking?, the dwarf booms in an overly loud voice. Everyone suspects that he may be a little hard of hearing.
When told that the party has been invited by Ashbeard, the dwarf pulls the door open wide and motions the party inside. He makes some motions to a mat in front of the door, obviously expecting everyone to clean their feet. Then he heaves on the door to shut it, almost clipping the laggard. He abruptly walks away, muttering to himself about muddy floors needing cleaning and how arthritic knees will hate the job.
After several twists and turns, the dwarf leads the party to a chamber lit by many magical lights suspended from the ceiling in crystal bowls. Ashbeard rises from a large chair at the head of the table and walks towards the party.
"Welcome! Welcome to our humble home! I wanted to thank you all and when the family heard, they all insisted on seeing you. So it's a somewhat larger group than I expected."
The party can now see that the table stretches long enough to accomodate forty or more people. The table is set with fine china and what looks like gold and silver cutlery.
"Come sit, here by me. Axehaft will summon the family."
Ashbeard leads the party to chairs set on either side of the table next to his chair. Once he settles himself back into his chair, he looks up at the party.
"So, how goes the farm? Are you needing anything else? I sent Steve out there to look after things and he should do a good job. Are there any other questions that you have?"
Xenia d20+7=12 d20+6=16 Monday July 10th, 2006 11:01:28 AM
Xenia spends quite a bit of time bathing, patting dry the loose curls of her red hair afterwards and letting it hang free across her shoulders. From her bag she draws a black velvet shirt with fringed sleeves. The one she had won from the tree so long ago at the winter party. The few dresses that she owned had been lost in the destruction of their apartments back in Floating City. The rogue sighs. Well, she'd just have to buy some more. And that only goes to show that good things can come from bad.
So it is that Xenia walks with the Shields through the streets of Plateau City in soft dark clothing. A comfortable brown cloak wraps her form. And her hair falls, loose for once, in waves across her slim shoulders.
"Weird house," she comments on the way in. "I hope they talk, you know, more than Bralin did."
It occurs to Xenia at the dinner table that it may be possible to find the fine line between admiring the table settings without appearing to appraise them. Though it isn't until after she's run a finger around the gold trim of the very expensive looking plates, that it may be more polite in circles like this to simply act as though you're not paying any attention to them at all. (Diplomacy 12)
"Um, did you know that the plantation out there may have some connection," Xenia says, dropping the words as casually as one might speak of the price of peas at the market, "to the recent Death Cult that everyone's up in arms about here in the city?" (Bluff 16)
Angus d20+9=16 Monday July 10th, 2006 1:39:36 PM
Angus is happy to be going to a more formal dinner, as it is better than eating on the trail.
Angus is also pleased that he will get to practice his dwarven again and converses with Ashbeard about the weather and such as practice.
When everyone sits down to at the table and Ashbeard asks about questions, Angus clears his throat. "Xenia is correct. We have reason to belive that the Vampire cleric at the plantation was in league with some sort of death cult in the city. Can you add any light on the subject? Oh, by the way the vampire's name was Sarah. Does that mean anything to you?"
Angus will wait for the reply and then add. "We have also heard that another group of adventurers confronted the death cult in the City. It may be advantageous for the Shield's to talk with them, that is if you wish us to investigate the matter further."
Angus will again wait for Ashbeard's response and then clear his throat again, and comment if Ashbeard wants the Shield's to investigate "There will be costs?" as Angus sips his wine.

Syr d20+16=31 Monday July 10th, 2006 6:04:17 PM
Responding to the polite inquiry from Ashbeard, "The kids seem to like the farm, although I'm not sure they know what to do with all the space. Steve is really taking charge of things. Does he normally do that kind of work for you? He seems to have a knack for delegation. He has been a blessing."
Hiding his grin by taking a big swallow of the wine, he admires Angus subtle mention of fees.
Turning to the woman next to him, "So what's this I hear about a group of adventurers saving the town, Any chance that you know their names?" (diplomacy 31)
Wynn d20+10=21 d20+16=24 Monday July 10th, 2006 6:16:25 PM
Wynn uses the extra time allotted before the dinner to do a more thorough then usual grooming at the bath house. He pays a bit extra to get a haircut, in the traditional style that he prefers, but directing the barber to leave a little more length at the back in order to obscure his gills. The beard still isn't quite as thick as he would like, so he reverts to his standard look with clean shaved cheeks and short trimmed stubble around the mouth and chin. He dresses in his cleanest clothes, but frowns on seeing his reflection. Donning his hat of disguise he smiles. Although he can still feel the comfortable weight of his mithril shirt across his chest, the plain brown breaches tucked into black leather boots are now soft grey colored wool. The cream colored shirt, knotted loosely at the neck is covered by a fitted navy blue coat with a double row of silver buttons wider at the shoulder and narrower as they approach the waist, the inside of the lapel open to reveal a mustard yellow lining. (Disguise=24)
*****
The bard has no trouble with the formal setting of the dwarf's table. His parents had insisted he be a part of the frequent formal dinners his father hosted when entertaining his noble clients or other wealthy traders with whom he had business. (Diplomacy=21) As such, he focuses on what Ashbeard has to say. Having spent a small amount of time with dwarves, he figures them for taciturn conversationalists who say little, but what they do say is usually worth listening too.
From time to time he finds his attention wandering as he admires the comely rogue sitting down table from him.
Belkior Monday July 10th, 2006 10:58:48 PM
The halfling cleric listens to the swirl of conversation around him. He never was very good at this sort of thing. It was always better to bury himself in his textbooks, or maybe sit quietly in a corner.
The food, however, is a different matter. Perhaps in deference to him, or maybe for some other reason, Ashbeard has arranged a vegetarian meal. Perhaps a little heavy on mushrooms but that might be due to the dwarven cuisine.
Famina Tuesday July 11th, 2006 1:02:57 AM
Famina sees Wynn going off to get a haircut and Xenia going to take a bath, and even the others seem intent upon spiffying themselves up. It must be important, dressing up... Hmmm. She interrogates a somewhat well-dressed woman just passing by, and manages to get some info on people whose job it is to spruce up others. She leaves the terrorized woman alone, and marches down to this local shop, and plunks down a few gold coins. She makes few concessions to the harassed beauticians. At first, she doesn't understand why she should have to take off her armor at all. Finally, though, she disrobes, then almost runs out in horror upon being faced with the bath. She manages to conquer her fear, though, but is thoroughly disgusted by its way-too-pleasing warmth. At least that's what she tells herself. She refuses other clothes, though she does allow them to clean the wolf-fur cloak and many-furred sidings of her clothes. When a woman asks if she'd like her face done, she merely blinks in confusion, then when explained, glares and refuses. She does not allow them to cut her hair, which when all of its long coils are unbraided, trails her on the ground. They do admire the golden tresses, and pity the lack of care for them. Finally, they bind it up though. Afterwards, it just happens to be raining, and she feels as though she wasted her money. She could have just ran around in the rain, naked, and saved it! She curses her bad luck. But the most important part is, of course, getting her weapons all shiny. The dull gray breastplate is buffed to a reflective base, her spiked helmet wiped clean, her brand new sword not even needing any work. Afterwards, she admires herself in a reflective puddle. Impressive?... well, being a muscular blonde more than six feet in height wearing shiny with a big sword is always impressive, and so she feels that somehow, the effect of cleaning is wasted. She chats with their hosts, the dwarves, in their tongue. Famina seems familiar with dwarven customs, and offers a toast to their host for his hospitality. And she consumes a flagon in a single draw, displaying impressive skill (hopefully) to the dwarven peoples.
Dinner with the Von Ottens (DM JohnP) Tuesday July 11th, 2006 10:44:16 AM
Whatever the Shields expected about a dinner party with the Von Ottens, hopefully they weren't expecting cheery conversation. Aside from murmured greetings as the various family members entered the dining room, no one speaks to them except for Ashbeard and one slightly familiar younger dwarf.
"Hello, I'm Thunir. You assisted me in the Floating City, back during the Troubles. I wanted to thank all of you and cousin Ashbeard organized this little get together. Where are the others, the dwarf and the ... ahh ... druid, was he?"
After making this little speech, the younger dwarf looks at the party members in obvious expectation of a response.
"Well, I'll talk to you later, after the meal."
After he finished speaking with the party, Thunir takes a seat just beside them. By this time, nearly all of the family members have arrived. Ashbeard moves to his chair and thumps his silver mug on the table to get their attention. Once most of the attendees are looking at him and no longer gossiping with their seatmates, Ashbeard clears his throat and speaks in a loud voice to get their attention.
"Hhhhm-hhhm. Everyone. Everyone ... and that means you, Cousin Floyd. We're here to honour these people. They and some former companions rescued Cousin Thunir during the Troubles. In Floating City. Please make them welcome. Before we eat, can you all stand and toast these people, without whom Thunir would have been taken from us."
With much scraping of chairs and some grumbling, the entire dwarf clan stands and raises their mugs towards the party.
"We salute the Crimson Shields of Floating City."
"Alexandria Merryman Next, Adventurer."
"Angus Deminof, Sorcerer Extraordinaire."
"Belkior Orvisson, Paragon of Alemi."
"Famina the Amazon."
"Lang Madchel, Ranger Protector of Floating City."
"Sydeth Redbow, Monk"
"Wynn, Bard Entertainer."
"And the absent - Florin and Tionel. These people have provided great service to the Von Ottens."
Ashbeard raises his mug and all of the other Von Ottens mirror his action. Then, like all good dwarfs, they down the contents and slam the mug down. That also seemed to be the signal for the servants to serve the meal. As the family members seat themselves, servants bearing heaping platters of roasted meat, vegetables and other foods enter the room. The platters are placed along the length of the tables. Once people start eating, they discover that the food is simple but well-prepared.
During the meal, all the family members are more focused on food and their seatmates than on the party. The only exceptions are Ashbeard and Thunir. When Xenia and others ask about the death cult in town, Ashbeard looks thoughtful for a moment.
"Well, hmmm. You say that the vampire that you fought was connected with them? The only thing that I can think of was that the last owner did business with deMontmorency. Maybe that's how the vampire learned that it was vacant. Oh, you might not now. The cult, well, they were based in the deMontmorency mansion, not too far from here. One of the leaders that the Guard is looking for is Ilonia deMontmorency."
When people ask about the adventurers, Ashbeard shrugs. "I don't know much about them except that they're supposed to be from Trade Quarter, not too far from the warehouse that the children stayed in. They supposedly hang out at a tavern called Sampson's, so you might find them there."
Ashbeard shrugs when asked about the vampire's name.
When the conversation dies down a bit, Thunir starts talking to Lang about the Crying Woods and the other areas near Floating City. As he speaks, Lang learns that the dwarf shares his affinity for nature and wild places.
"Well, it's an interesting area that's for sure. I ... ahh ... look for business prospects for the family. New markets, new products, that sort of things. Mainly an excuse to wander about. The new location of Floating City seemed like a good opportunity, especially since the family does so much business with the Float. So I went there, hoping to find an overland route. Cheaper way, you know, to move bulk goods. But that didn't work out."
"So I headed out to see what I find otherwise. Not into the Crying Woods, of course. I don't like that place and it doesn't like me. I went the other way, across the lake to the big hills. Figured that I might find some dwarfkin, or something. Or maybe gold, I prospect too. Let me tell you, those hills are weird places. You ever been up there? I ran into some creatures that I'd never seen before. Big snake and lizard things, the like I'd never seen before. And spider ... uggh!"
Thunir visibly shudders.
"Biggest darned spiders that I've seen. Big enough that you could ride the things, even you. Decided not to press my luck and turned back to the Float. Did find some old ruins, though. I found some relics, lost most of them in the Float but this thing. You ever seen anything like it in the Float? Never seen this rock before but Uncle Floyd says it's called serpentine."
Thunir places a small green stone statue on the table. It's nearly a match for the one that was found by Xenia in the mansion.
By this time, dinner is nearly over except for the desserts. And the Von Ottens don't stint on dessert. The servants wheel several trolleys out with a variety of sweets. The only problem is choosing ...
After everyone has eaten their fill, the other Von Ottens start leaving the table. Very soon it seems like it's only Ashbeard, Thunir and some younger cousins who are determined to not leave any dessert uneaten that are left.
Ashbeard understands Angus' hint about payment. He looks down for a moment before replying.
"Well, this cult isn't much concern to the family right now. Since it seems that Ingriddottir didn't go much more than once. But if you find that it does, let me know and I can see what we can do."
"Remember, anytime that you're here in Plateau City, that you can call on the Von Otten's for assistance. And we're going to be doing more business in the Float, too."
"If you want to head back to the Float now, it seems like a busy place. Lot's of people heading back there, it seems. And new folks, from here in Plateau City, who are probably looking for a different place to live. Trade's picking up, too. Seems others have the same ideas as Thunir, here, looking to explore the area around the Float. Thats' even with the extra security that the Float has thrown up around the teleportal."
When dinner concludes, both Thunir and Ashbeard ask if the party has any final questions. Then the two politely show the party to the door. The evening isn't too late, so there's still time to check out the nearby mansion that housed the cult. Or try to find this other adventuring group.
Xenia Tuesday July 11th, 2006 3:10:32 PM The spider ... From somewhere across the lake from Floating City ...
At dinner the dark rogue eyes the stone spider that Thunir places upon the table. Exactly like the one they found in the vampire's throne. But why would Vampie Sarah have kept it hidden? Why bother if it's just a weird statue thingy? Gotta be much more than a connection here. These stone spider things must have a use.
"Um, Thunir, can I ask you just how you found that spider statue? I mean, like, did you just find it lying on the ground someplace? Was it in a hidden nook? Maybe, you know, in amongst some scattered bones or something?"
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Later on, after dinner, wrapped in her comfy cloak, Xenia links arms with Wynn.
"Well, fancy meeting such a handsome guy at a party like this." Her hair falls in thick red rivulets from his shoulder as she leans her head against him. "I wonder if he'll walk me home? Maybe, I dunno, come in for a nightcap?"
"Or maybe we can go check this Trade Quarter, huh? Find this Sampson's place and see if this other Adventuring Group is up and about? Whaddya think?"
Angus Tuesday July 11th, 2006 4:24:02 PM
Angus will sample the many foods and desserts offered, but never more than one bite. Angus is just not active enough to have much of an appetite.
After most of the family member retire, Angus will thant Ashbeard and Thunrin for their hospitality in Dwarven, have to keep up with the practice.
Angus will then return to common. "Thunrin, how can we locate you if we have more questions later about your adventures in the hills near the floating city? Did you go alone or with a group?"
When Xenia asks questions about the stone spider, Angus thinks of the stone statue that the group took from the vampire and thinks to himself, I wonder if they are keys or the like?
When Xenia talks of a night cap Angus jumps on the comment. "A night cap, how wonderful. How about we all go to Sampson's for a drink and see who turns up. Xenia you and Wynn do not mind five escorts on your foray to the trade quarter......?" Angus finishes ith a wry grin.
Lang & Sunshine Tuesday July 11th, 2006 10:22:54 PM
Lang speaks quickly to Sunshine telling him to wait outside until Lang returns. Sunshine looks around near the doorway that Lang entered and finds a spot to lie down. He closes his eyes, but does not really fall asleep as his master is not nearby.
OOC - Cast Speak with Animals
Lang enters the Von Ottens residence and admires its uniqueness and large size. He is taken back a bit by the dwarves attention to him and the rest of the Shields. Hmmm Lang thinks, Protector of the Floating City. Has a nice ring to it.
Lang enjoys the meal that the Von Ottens' staff has prepared. He covertly slips a nice bone into his pocket to give to Sunshine later. When Thunir speaks of the Crying Woods it reminds Lang that they must check up on Prionel in the near future.
"Thunir, the Crying Woods is a beautiful and exciting place. But that was only when its powerful guardian let us traverse the woods without being attacked. Otherwise it is a place not to enter unless well prepared. It has fearsome plant and animal creatures that the guardian can use to repel any uninvited visitor. As you saw with the attack on the Floating City, the Crying Woods is able to reach beyond its borders if it feels the need."
"I have not traveled to the other shore from the Floating City. Hmm, spiders large enough for me to ride. I am not sure if I should be excited at that prospect or frightened. Thunir, did these snake and lizard creatures seem organized? Did they attack each other over territory? Do you think they may be preparing an assault on the Floating City?"
Lang is glad that the children are far away from the Floating City with the recent upheaval and all the strange things that are happening. Perhaps being on the plantation far from any city will keep them away from trouble. Thunir's talk of a strange stone draws Lang back into conversation. His face turns into a deep frown when he sees the green stone that matches the one found at the plantation.
"Yes, Thunir I have recently seen a stone similar to that green one. I think we may need to meet in the near future to learn more about how and where you found it."
Lang subsides into silence as his thoughts turn towards the meaning of what has been going on. What is the connection between the Vampire and the death cult with the spider and lizards creatures that Thunir saw? It is beyond his grasp right now.
Lang does not say anything when the group suggests going to the bar to look up this other group of adventurers. Once outside he calls Sunshine to his side. Together they move to the back of the group as it moves away from the Von Otten compound.
Wynn Tuesday July 11th, 2006 11:24:26 PM
Wynn bows his head in acknowledgement of the honor paid to them by the Van Ottens. "I am also proud to keep the pledge of the Clan Corregan" he speaks to the assembled dwarves. "Perhaps you are familiar with them. They make their home in the Red Hills."
Wynn spends the dinner listening intently to all that is said, at least when he is not distracted by Xenia. "Can you describe the location of these ruins? Perhaps you saw fit to map your route?" Wynn asks Thunir.
Upon leaving the dwarven hall, Wynn leans into the rogue. "You look positively edible tonight" he whispers. "I'd love a nightcap" but any thoughts of time alone are quickly dashed by Angus' suggestion to accompany them to Sampson's. He gives the mage a sour look and then follows along, Xenia by his side.
Syr Tuesday July 11th, 2006 11:45:37 PM
Listening intently as Thunir begins describing the rebuilding of the Floating City, the elf sighs wistfully. As the dwarf goes on, his eyes become unfocused as if he is picturing the way things use to be. Sighing in memory, he rejoins the party around him and tries to get his cheer back with liberal doses of wine.
The elf snorts once when told about the spiders, "Well, we have gone from walking plants to the walking dead. At least spiders are something real, even if they were subject to one of Angus' spells.
Following Angus outside, "Adventurers... at a tavern ... at night? What are the odds of that do ya think?" He grins at the sorceror, "Just a thought but the last time we suddenly met a fellow group of adventurers, things didn't turn out so well." The elf moves his eyes down remembering his poor conduct. "Maybe we should start with smaller groups and build up to all of the Shields. I mean it sounds like these guys are like us in deeds and spirit. I just don't want to get things off on the wrong foot with snap judgements."
Famina Wednesday July 12th, 2006 6:47:53 AM
"Sounds to me like Xenia and Wynn have an excellent plan for themselves, and we should leave them to it.. I, myself, want to go to this tavern in that quarter, and seek out these famous adventurers. "As for plans beyond that, I think it's pretty apparent, even to me, that these statues in the lands beyond the Floating City. Imagine, ancient ruins nobody's really looked at, just sitting there withs tuff like this...AND its connected to this death cult, somehow. That sounds like a fun time to me..."
Belkior Wednesday July 12th, 2006 8:39:39 AM
The halfling cleric listens to the debate about going to find these other adventurers.
"We shoudl probably at least find them to see what they've found. If they're willing to share information, we won't need to repeat their investigations. And maybe we can provide them with some information, too."
Off to Sampson's (DM JohnP) Wednesday July 12th, 2006 10:59:24 PM
Standing inside Von Otten mansion, Thunir takes the time to answer the final questions. He responds to Xenia's questions with a shrug.
"I found the spider statue in a ruined building, almost completely overgrown by the vines. I wish that I did have people with me ... the walls and columns of the building were covered with carvings. A lot like the spider statue in style, if you know what I mean. I don't think it was anything special, I found it and several others at the corner of the walls. And the only bones that I saw looked like they were from the big lizard things."
When Angus and Lang question him, Thunir looks thoughtful for a moment. Then he looks to Lang.
"No, I prefer to go alone. You know what I mean. I could probably guide you back there, if you like, or draw up a map. I didn't really bother since I didn't find anything of interest to the family. As to the creatures, the lizards were just animals from what I could see. The snake-things ... I only saw them from a distance. Didn't want to get too close. And they seemed content to stay there and chase me away, if you know what I mean."
After that, the Shields walk through the streets of Plateau City. It's not too late yet but the streets are already very quiet. Maybe that's because the Von Otten house is in a good part of town, or maybe due to the effects of the Troubles. Either way, when the party passes the mansion mentioned as being the site of the cult, there are guards posted outside to keep gawkers at a distance.
After crossing the bridges over the river, the party finds themselves in the commercial and administrative district of Merchant Quarter. The streets here are nearly empty. Finally, after a short distance, the party finds themselves in Trade Quarter. With a minimum of difficulty, they can find Sampson's.
When they open the door, the interior of the tavern is bustling. Servers are going back and forth carrying drinks and meals, busboys are picking up dishes and mugs and there's a buzz of conversation in the air. When the Shields enter, there's the slight pause that always occur. Despite how cosmopolitan Plateau City is, the sight of a bugbear and a deformed halfling with cat legs still has that reaction.
Looking about, the Shields think that they've spotted the other adventuring party. There's a group of eight people sitting around a table in the far corner.
Crossover Announcement (DM JohnP) Wednesday July 12th, 2006 11:00:55 PM Please post responses on the Plateau City board.
