DM Kathy d20+4=24 d20+12=30 d6+9=10 Thursday September 7th, 2006 1:03:48 AM Arminas crests the hill, looks into Baelfred's eyes, feels the pull of them.
And resists.
He shouts a warning to his friends, then looses two arrows at your one-time ally. The first strikes its target with a solid THUNK!, the silver doing its work. The second shot is on target, but bounces off Baelfred's skin as it shouldn't with a normal man.
The invisible Fosco begins sneaking up on Baelfred. [Give me a couple of Move Silently checks, please.]
Lorth casts Protection from Evil and pulls out his wineskin.
Any, who has been suspicious of Baelfred from the beginning, readily accepts Arminas at his word and fires three shots. Unfortunately, none of them hit.
Bralin strides up to Baelfred and casts a Cure spell. When he places his hands on the man's chest, Baelfred lets out a howl of pain. His flesh smokes a little. Bralin can tell that only half of the healing magic poured out, but it definitely hurt.
No doubt about it; Baelfred is undead.
Harvest, spitting curses, draws a mirror from her pack and brandishes it at Baelfred.
Florin readies sword and shield, and pauses to make sure he is indeed facing a foe and not a man wrongly accused.
Davros sees that the healing spell harms Baelfred, which is all the proof he needs. He unleashes magic missiles.
Baelfred shrinks from the mirror Harvest is waving at him, but he remains within striking distance of Bralin. With sickening swiftness, the vampire [yes, he is one] lunges at the cleric, slamming into him for 10 points damage. But that isn't the worst of it. Some of the lifeforce seems to flow from Bralin and into the vampire, leaving the dwarf looking drained, and Baelfred looking freshly energized. [Bralin gains two negative levels. See pages 310-311 of the Players Handbook]

Lorth is surprised by Bralin's attack, but figures he must know what he is doing. When Baelfred's react's to Bralin's heal spell Lorth yells, "Baelfred, I have brought you the liquid from the still, as you requested and I promised to do. Here it is." He holds the wineskin out before him then thrusts his sword through it, cutting it in half and letting the liquid drain onto the ground.
Quickly making sure all the liquid is gone, he readies himself for the attack that is surely coming.

"You wished to have all of the children to yourself while we were occupied within the mine." She drops the mirror and draws a scroll from her haversack. "Poor Devrin. You never required the mixture from the Still, Cursed Undead. It was but a ruse."
Quickly she reads from the scroll. As the parchment and dowling crumble to dust, the small brown girl grows and grows.
"You did not get the others," she continues, shaking her enlarged fist at the vampire. "And here is where your evil will end."

Burdened by the double emotions, Bralin barely even sees the attack coming. He recoils in pain as his life force is ripped from his body.
Betrayal. Failure. Pain. The warrior shoves them down. Now is not the time. Now is the time of battle.

DM Kathy d20+16=23 d20+16=17 Friday September 8th, 2006 12:24:43 AM Lorth calls out to get Baelfred's attention, then runs his sword through the wineskin holding the liquid from the Still. Baelfred hisses in annoyance.
Harvest cries out that the trek to the mine was merely a ruse. Judging from Baelfred's expression when he looks at the ruptured wineskin, though, it was a bit more than a ruse. At any rate, the monk pulls out a scroll and casts it.
Fosco succeeds in sneaking up behind the vampire, and lets fly with a crossbow bolt. The attack does catch Baelfred unawares, but not all of the damage seems to penetrate.
Arminas's silver arrows don't seem to have that problem. This time, they both hit (Thunk-THUNK!), and seem to have their full effect on the vampire. Baelfred reels, snarling.
Any retrieves a potion and drinks it. [Drinking a potion is a Standard action, so you don't get any attacks this round. You can use those attack rolls next round if you like.]
Bralin pulls himself together and tries to attack, but his swing is ineffectual.
Davros casts a spell and fires a ray. The firey damage makes the vampire howl in pain.
Florin moves up to engage the vampire. He takes a swing, but misses. [If you move and attack in the same round, you only get one attack.]
Baelfred snarls. His wounds begin to close up, a little, but not nearly as fast as you are hurting him. He looks around, and you can see that he is calculating the odds.
Then, with a faint smile, he disappears, melting into a cloud of gas that begins drifting away.

Baelfred vanishes into a cloud of smoke. Like Lorth, Bralin has no means to combat the vampire in that form. "Ware his return," he warns the group.
[Spot 7] The dwarf is avoiding looking at Devrin. But at Fosco's warning, he glances over. Mayhap the boy isn't dead, mayhap he is undead. Bralin doesn't know. And after today, he's not acting until he does know.

The soft sound of movement comes from behind. But the only thing behind her is the body of Devrin. The body into which she had only moments before poured healing energy.
Without turning her eyes from the misty form of the vampire Baelfred, Harvest Moon steps away from the sound and draws another wand from her magic haversack.
"Davros Sapphiredge, you may be able to use this wand," she says to the wizard, her eyes still fixed upon the floating vampire. "If you wish to use it, please come take it from me."
Then she points the wand and speaks a trigger word. A bright ray of positive energy lances out at the gaseous form.
(Question: I know the vampire can't take anymore damage when driven to Gaseous Form after having dropped to Zero hp. But is that true also of a deliberate change to Gaseous Form? In the spell description, a creature turned gaseous can still be damaged.)

Spraying this out of his mouth in a fine mist, he concentrates on the oil, igniting it into a flame, engulfing the misty form of the vampire.
He coughs a little, and rinses his mouth with water.
"A trick I learned while with my troupe, though I never thought before to use it that way, and I don't know if it did any good anyway."

Florin doesn't like how all this is going and looks to the others, watching the body of the child move and wondering if it will attack them or what.
Either way he speaks up to the others, "When we spoke to him at the one point I did not detect a lie so if there is a overlord type figure to this cursed world and generals serving him we have no idea if Baelfred is a general or the big man himself. I don't think we should take him at part stregnth." Florin doesn't like the fact of being tricked or anything either but is concerned with somethings also so turns to Lorth and speaks to him, "Is there any of that vile liquid salvagable? I would like to keep a small amount to have tested by someone when we get a chance. We should research and find out why it was so important for sure for future refrence. We do not know if that thing the liquid came from is destroyed or not for one thing, artifacts I think are harder to destroy then normal objects."
Florin is just concerned over what the liquid is, what it does and if those questions can be answered. A small amount should be enough to be rereached by someone who knows what their doing. Florin looks to the group and hopes his request is not taken as he has been charmed or anything, he just wishes to find out answers since he is planning to become a undead hunter.
DM Kathy d20+3=22 Sunday September 10th, 2006 11:50:37 PM Fosco points out to the others that Devrin is moving, then moves to cover his friends with his crossbow. [OOC: Sorry; I hadn't made this clear. When I said you were moving "toward the Inn," I meant "in the general direction of the Inn." The Inn is still quite a ways off.]
Lorth moves over to where Devrin lies, and prepares to strike at the boy if he rises as undead.
Bralin keeps his eyes on both the gaseous cloud and the still, pale child. He thinks of what he has heard about vampires, and recalls that they are capable of creating "vampire spawn" from their victims. However, these spawn usually don't rise for a couple of days after death.
Harvest pulls out a wand and activates it, sending a golden ray at the cloud of gas. The ray strikes the gas and sizzles through it. You can't tell for sure, but you think it did some damage.
Any does a little fire-eating trick to try to blow flame at the fleeing gas. Again, it's hard to tell whether the flames had any effect.
Davros takes Harvest's proffered wand and stands ready if Baelfred should re-materialize.
Arminas fires two arrows at the gaseous form, which pass harmlessly through it.
Florin suggests taking a small sample of the liquid from the Still in order to test it.
The gaseous cloud that is Baelfred is retreating now, moving quickly in the general direction of Baelfred's house, two days' travel behind you.
Devrin opens his eyes and sits up. "Hello," he says, and smiles at you. He looks around. "Where is Baelfred?" he asks, beginning to rise.
That triggers Harvest's readied action, and she attempts to trip him. She makes contact, but is unable to knock the boy off his feet. "What did you do that for?" he asks, sounding angry.
Physically, Devrin looks much as he always did--the likeable, even-tempered, handsome lad who made friends so easily. Who had taken so strongly to Bralin and followed him around, asking eager, curious questions. Who wanted to be an adventurer when he grew up. Just like you, his heroes.
There is something different about him, though; a hard, almost predatory look in his eyes. A sharpening of his features. And he is still very, very pale.
Lorth AC 21, HP 68 Monday September 11th, 2006 7:55:19 AM

Bralin's features set. His mind reaches back for the memory of the undead form that once was Lorth's father. From that image, the dwarf draws strength. Dervin is likely gone. This is likely not the boy.
The dwarf's tone is hard, authoritative. "Do not move," he demands. "I am going to heal your wounds."
With those words, more for his comrades that the boy, Bralin casts a spell and places his hand on Devrin.

"I ... I do not know, Anthos. I don't remember." (Kathy?)
"Devrin," replies Harvest Moon to the boy. She wipes at the wetness upon her face while attempting to follow Baelfred's fleeing form with her eyes. Are his wounds still healing? Would he then be back? Or is he fleeing because he can no longer fight? What would come from pursuing him ... it from a sense of vengeance?
"Devrin, we suspect that Baelfred may have done a terrible thing to you." The bitter bile of their failure and the horror of its consequences wells up within the brown girl, squeezing more tears from her eyes. "We believe that he may have made a vampire of you. But we are still here to help you. Please be still while we try to help you. Can you tell us what happened just now? Before you awoke here? What were you and Baelfred doing?"
Harvest Moon takes another few steps away and unfurls the links of her chain. She readies to bring him to the ground should he decide to fight. From her enlarged height, Harvest looks down upon the pale boy, so close to becoming a young man. And now he may never do so.
"And please do not think that we love you any less for what you have become. But we must do what is best for your soul and the souls of others."

Arminas was afraid of this, his silver arrows do no damage to the vampire is his misty form. The mist drifts away, and Devrin rises.
"Harvest, your healing wand has helped Devrin. He rises, though he is in much need of healing."
With high hopes, Arminas watches as Bralin go to heal Devrin.
"Devrin, don't worry Bralin has the ability to help. Soon we will get you home."
Devrin has the look of someone who has lost trust. Arminas had a similar look in his eyes after being betrayed by Captain Greenblade and the elven girl in Parnoth's kingdom.
"Relax Devrin, the world is hard but we will help you."
Florin Jadenth Monday September 11th, 2006 10:58:07 PM
Florin takes the stabbed waterskin and looks it over before trying to salvage alittle of the liquid so it can be tested, thats if there is any of it left.
Thinking Florin looks to the others and frowns thinking, "If what he said was true then the child may not beable to move to our realm without some of this liquid also, however maybe this is part of his wishes. To send one of his kind, connected to him to our area."
DM Kathy d20+5=12 Tuesday September 12th, 2006 12:15:28 AM Lorth retrieves the ruptured wineskin and watches to see what Devrin will do. Florin also works with the wineskin, trying to retrieve a little of the potion.
Bralin approaches the boy, casts a spell, and attempts to heal him.
Devrin draws back, hissing, from Bralin's holy symbol, but the dwarf is too quick. Healing energy pulses into...well, into whatever Devrin has become. Whatever it is, it doesn't like healing magic. A faint wisp of smoke rises from where Bralin's hand has touched, and Devrin screams in pain. At least, it sounds (horribly) like Devrin screaming in pain.
Fosco keeps to the shadows. Devrin does not appear to have seen you.
Any watches the proceedings, weapons in hand.
Arminas, too, watches, hoping everything will turn out for the best. It seems unlikely.
Harvest speaks quietly to Devrin, trying to remember whether she checked his pulse. [OOC: I don't recall either, but I don't think so. You would have noticed, though, that he didn't appear to be breathing when you first approached him.]
She asks Devrin what he and Baelfred had been doing. Still in pain, the boy gasps, but replies, "He called me. In my head. Wanted me to come here. I--I couldn't say no." Then he smiles. It's a little unsettling. "When I got here, he said he wanted a son. He wanted me for his son, and we would be a family. We are a family now." The smile is wide now, a weird light gleaming in the boy's eyes. "He is my father now, and I am his son. We'll be together always. Forever and forever. That's what he said." Abruptly, he turns. "I have to go to him. He needs me."
With that, he attempts to shoulder past you, moving quickly in the same direction the cloud of gas went.
Fosco Tuesday September 12th, 2006 1:30:32 AM

Any too realizes what Devrin has become, and he does not hesitate.
With tears in his eyes, but a hard expression on his face, his weapons strike. His third strike misses, perhaps from his own reluctance, but the others strike true as he attempts to end this mockery of an existence Baelfred has laid upon this boy.
Those close enough can hear him softly say,
"I'm sorry."
He stays ready to attack again if this does not finish the monster Devrin has become.

"Harvest! Do not leave! It is better to get shut of this evil land than to seek revenge. We have lost two of our number already, we do not need to lose more. Let us dicuss this before doing anything rash."
Florin Jadenth Tuesday September 12th, 2006 8:55:48 PM
Florin looks at Harvest moves off and the attack on Devrin is made and speaks quickly to Bralin, "Get Harvest to stop Bralin. We do not know if the other children have been charmed and we should concern ourselves with their safty first. I know I'm not leader and am not trying to be but those children at this moment are in danger again and our goal from the beginning was to see them to safty and now that goal is threatened by the fact that the Inn may not be safe for them at all."
Florin looks to the others and thinks of his own time in the Shields and comments made to him before he had left...he had been taking alot of those to mind also and speaks to the group as a whole, "The group should have a buddy system too when scouting and such. Two people with decent hide and scouting skills should be moving together. You all been together longer then I have been with you but we should be aware of our abilities and the knowledge that together we stand strong, apart we stand weak."
Florin looks to Devrin, specially if he is killed or stopped for the moment and moves closer, looking to the child before speaking to Bralin mainly, "There are rights that need to be done to make sure this child doesn't come back. I will see to them is you have a bottle of holy water my friend. I will replace it once I can."
(Kathy, I noticed that I forgot to add the sharpened sticks to my CS. May I add them?)
DM Kathy Wednesday September 13th, 2006 12:07:51 AM Fosco speaks from the shadows, and Lorth is of a mind to wait a moment and think about strategy. The others, however, spring into action.
Bralin grits his teeth for all he's worth, and swings his axe. The blow strikes Devrin, but somehow doesn't seem to do all the damage it otherwise might have. Nevertheless, Devrin cries out in pain.
Arminas follows up with two silver arrows. Unlike Bralin's axe, these seem to deal all their damage. Devrin staggers, clutching his side.
Any lashes out with his own weapons, which seem to have a lesser effect similar to Bralin's axe. It doesn't seem to matter, though; Devrin is badly hurt by now.
Davros's magic missiles finish him off. For a moment, the boy's eyes reflect pain and bewilderment. Then the light goes out of them and his body slumps gracelessly to the ground.
Seeing him fall, Harvest is all for tracking down Baelfred, and sets off after the vampire. Any and Florin are opposed to the idea, and try to dissuade the monk. After all, it appears your duty lies in the Inn.
At any rate, Florin would like to perform a rite that will ensure the Devrin does not rise again.
Lorth Wednesday September 13th, 2006 8:10:37 AM
Lorth frowns, it is a sad thing to see someone so young destroyed. "I think we should follow Baelfred as soon as possible." After voicing his opinion he waits for Bralin to make a decision.
Bralin Wednesday September 13th, 2006 8:47:25 AM
"No."
Bralin's voice is ice. "Harvest, stop!"
The dwarf looks at the group, specifically Harvest. He mercilessly hammers home a few salient points, although the coldness of his eyes betray his own rage. "To pursue Baelfred now endangers the remaining children." "We have not the means to contain and destroy the vampire."
The dwarf points an axe in the direction of the Inn. "We must save those still living. Now." "We must equip ourselves for this realm. "Then we return for vengeance."
Bralin turns and beheads the undead at his feet. "Have ye a tent stake?" he asks.
The dwarf will remove his cloak and wrap the creature's body in it. He then places his Sphere [holy symbol] in the mouth of the head, and wraps it up in the sack. With body over one shoulder, and sack in the other hand, Bralin makes for the Inn. Devrin will leave this realm, one way or another.
note for dm - should we get that far in one post, Bralin will not enter the Inn with the kids in there or reveal the contents of his burden to them.
Any (AC 23 HP 40/40) Wednesday September 13th, 2006 10:55:35 AM
Any nods in agreement with Bralin and Florin.
"I agree with you friend Florin. None should ever run off alone. I also agree with you Bralin. The children are our first priority right now. If we decide to return and finish this with Baelfred, it should only be after they are safe. It grieves me that we have had to do this to Devrin, but I am sure his family would prefer it to the alternative. At least now he is at peace.
Let us return to the Inn as quickly as we can, and insure that none of the others meet a fate like this. Then we can decide what more to do."
He says this last looking at Harvest (if she stopped).

"No! Baelfred is evil and must pay with destruction! If we leave him go now, he will evade us and we will never find him again! The children are safe back at the Inn. The Inn is a safe haven! The Inn is safe! Fosco Loamsdown, the Inn is safe is it not?"
"If Devrin had only stayed. If he had remained with the others. If we had sent them on to the Catacombs before we left. If I had told Turi and Naki to hold any who tried to leave ... "
The towering form of Harvest Moon collapses to her knees where she remains sobbing into her hands.

The destruction of what was once Devrin and the sobbing of Harvest is too much, and Arminas' eyes cloud with tears. Wiping the tears away with the sleeve of his cloak, he turns and looks at Bralin, who seems to finally have taken command.
"We have voted you our leader in battle, and I will follow your direction. Yet I believe that your judgement should be made wisely. You say we have not the means to defeat Baelfred. He fled because I and others have wounded him gravely. When he returns to his physical form, I can kill him! Harvest seems able to do damage to him in his current form as well. He will gain strength if we let him, yet the children need to be considered."
Fosco Wednesday September 13th, 2006 6:40:52 PM
Goes over to comfort Harvest.
The Inn is a safehaven of sorts. It is a place where the creatures of this realm cannot enter, but Devrin proved they can influence weak minds to come out. A childs' mind is not as strong to repel that evil as an adults and your, our responsibility should be to those children that remain. Get them back to the wold as soon as possible before others get duped into coming out. Yes, vengeance would feel good right now for not only tricking us but causing the death of the boy, but I tell you from experience, where 1 vampire is, other minions are sure to be and as I have seen this group is capable I fear we are not as capable in this realm as those we choose to persue. We should go to the inn while we can, get the children to safety, and see if the clerics there can rescue Devrin's soul. But we need to leave.
Florin Jadenth Wednesday September 13th, 2006 10:08:29 PM
Florin pulls his backpack off and moves his winter blanket where he had wrapped the sharpened tables legs from the ruined GG, what seemed like so long ago now when the fey king stuff was going on and holds one of the stakes out to Bralin, "I can do this if you wish. It will be my job to someday soon."
Florin is ready to head back with the others to the Inn but for the moment doesn't like the idea of chasing down the vampire at the moment, who knows if or how many of the other kids are charmed or such and he doesn't not want more victims like Devrin.
DM Kathy Thursday September 14th, 2006 12:54:12 AM
The party begins to discover that being trapped in a realm of horror, at the mercy of creatures out of nightmare, with innocents to protect, isn't as much fun as it sounds.
Bralin and Any add their voices to those trying to dissuade Harvest from following after Baelfred.
She stops, utterly breaking down in sobs.
Arminas sheds sympathetic tears, and Fosco moves to comfort the weeping monk.
Bralin gathers up the body, and you begin moving toward the Inn. You know that, for now, your duty lies there. Whether you will return and try to slay the vampire once the kids are safe is another question.
It is full dark now, and it is difficult to see your way. You stumble through broken hills scattered with the pale, spindly vegetation. It is not a pleasant walk.
At last, though, you see the windows of the Inn, glowing a welcoming gold in the dark night.
Lorth Thursday September 14th, 2006 7:28:11 AM
Lorth enters the inn, hopefully the children are sleeping in their room rhis late at night. If not, he tries to keep their attention while Bralin stowes away his grisly burden.

Bralin walks to the Inn, his load much heavier that the mere weight of a body. Arminas question him, and the dwarf forces himself to respond in a level tone. He faces forward, not trusting himself to look the ranger in the eye.
When he returns to his physical form, I can kill him! "IF he becomes corporeal, he will choose time and place. After he has healed. After he his safe."
"The children are safe IF they remain at the Inn. Yet, they are children. Gerdi left. Devrin left. Soon another will leave to find him. And another. And another."
"Baelfred has won this battle. We retreat. He expects to escape and be gone. He will return to his cottage to await his next victim. He will not expect us to return, as he would not."
Upon reaching the Inn, Bralin waits outside the door. He tells Any, "I will wait and watch through the windows. I will enter after all have exited." The dwarf sighs deeply. "With luck, the sun is shining in the Wold.

The spell ends, and Harvest shrinks down until she is no higher than Fosco Loamsdown's head. Her hands fall to her lap and she nods in silent reply.
Face still cast toward the ground, she rises to her feet and follows along, back toward the Inn. Her small hands reach out to clutch at Anthos and she buries her face in his chest until her breathing evens. Then walking along beside him, she nods as he whispers to her.
She lays her head in the crook of his arm holding to his waist. Then she shakes her head.
"What is done is done," she says softly. "If we are to destroy the vampire, then one day we shall, Anthos. The road will lead us where it will. And if our roads should come together one day, then on that day shall be the reckoning."

Arminas listens quietly to the obviously upset dwarf.
"Thanks, of course you are right."
He then meekly follows the group into the Inn, deciding that he should choose his words more carefully in the future.
Arminas rubs his jaw as memories from the past race into his mind.
Florin Jadenth Thursday September 14th, 2006 4:24:48 PM
Florin endures the hard walk back to the Inn and offers to help Bralin with his burden now and then also, patting the dwarf on the shoulder gently. Florin has seen the loss of children already, ones he himself could not save. He didn't not want to see the loss of more children's lives but knows this is a inevitable process, he is not a god, just a servant.
At the Inn Florin will go to also check on the children afterwards, rather the children are safe or not he moves to Harvest and speaks gently to her, "I'm sorry for my words back there Harvest. I wished only for the group to be safe and the children and then we can deal with what needs to be done." Florin sighs and looks to where the body of Gerdi lays, his own burden at the time and whispering, "This has been a costly experience so far. An a sad one." He looks back to Harvest and smiles gently, "But one of learning for the children too. They have learned that life is a mixture of joy, loss, danger, hope and much more. An you have helped some to see it more. I doubt the teachings you have passed on will be forgotten." Florin chews his lip and smiles weakly, "I'm not good at the pep talk or making people feel better but I'm sorry and only wish I could do more or protect those who need it better. Sometimes it feels like a personal failing since I'm a servant of a god who protects people."
Florin turns and leaves Harvest with his words, hoping they might of helped some how and not taken wrong. He only wished to help her in some. He looks to Bralin and smiles saddly too, "The leader has to make some of the hardest decisions and sometimes bear them more alone then others." Florin places a hand on Bralin's shoulder, "That is a role I know well indeed Bralin, my friend. I will be the first to agree retreating till we are full stregnth and seeing that the kids are safe is the best choice for the moment. A sound tactic."
DM Kathy Friday September 15th, 2006 12:24:42 AM Any takes a moment as you walk to comfort Harvest, who seems to need some comforting. In truth, you all feel a little shell-shocked as you make your way toward the Inn.
So, when Gerdi pops out of the ground, it's really startling.
"Is he gone?" she asks anxiously. "Is the bad man gone?" Tears well in her transparent eyes. "He--he got Devrin," she says, the statement ending on a wail. "He go-o-o-o-ot D-D-Devrin," she repeats at a howl, then breaks into sobs. "I w-wanna g-go HO-O-O-OME!" she cries.
There is no hushing her, but you soon realize that she will follow you if you move into the Inn, so you do so. It, at least, is a place of safety, where Gerdi's howls won't do much more than annoy people.
In the Inn, you find Cerina waiting up for you, anxious for your return. Turi and Naki are there, too, manfully stifling yawns. The others are nowhere to be seen--presumably they are asleep.
When you enter, Cerina jumps to her feet, relief all over her face. "You're back!" she says with a smile. Her eyes seek Lorth's, and the smile grows a little wider. Then her face falls, seeing your expressions. "What happened?" she says. "Gerdi, hush! What happened? Where is Baelfred? Did Devrin catch up with you?"
Lorth Friday September 15th, 2006 8:18:58 AM
Lorth moves over to Cerina. "Thank you for waiting up, Cerina. Things did not go exactly as planned, Baelfred is not to be trusted again. Could you do me a quick favor and run to the children's room and make sure they are all accounted for?" Hopefully this will give Bralin the few moments he needs to come in with his bundle, while making Cerina feel useful.
Any Friday September 15th, 2006 9:47:20 AM
Any greets Cerina with a false smile and cheerfullness. He is greatful to Lorth for providing a way to remove her from the entry while Bralin enters.
If the Innkeeper, or any of his staff are awake, he will order ale for the company, and take a table in one corner.
Turning to the others, once they are all accounted for, he asks,
"Do we wait for morning, or do we take the children from this dismal world now?"
For all his glibness, and facility with words, Any is at a loss for what more to say. He thinks to sing a lament, and even reaches for his Lute before remembering that it is no longer upon his back. He hopes that no one else saw the movement.
He sits quietly collecting his thoughts and composing while the others discuss what they wish to do.
Davros Friday September 15th, 2006 9:59:08 AM
Let us leave now. The sooner we leave the sooner we can rest a little easier that these children are safe.
Fosco Friday September 15th, 2006 10:02:44 AM
After seeing that the doors are secure, I make a beeline to one of the dwarf statues on either side of the fireplace. Finding the one to the groups destination I activate the portal by touching the arm. The flames die down in the pit and a long tunnel appears.
Hurry now. Gather all the children and let us get them home. We can regroup on the other side. Once everyone is ready I move down the tunnel.
Harvest Friday September 15th, 2006 10:21:08 AM
The lights of the Inn touch a spot of warmth within Harvest Moon's soul. So much of this land is dark and cold. Through the door is Cerina. Turi and Naki as well.
Then Paladin Florin stops her.
"Your words were neither hurtful, nor spoken with evil intent, Paladin Florin Jadenth," Harvest Moon replies. Her face is dirty, but the tears have dried. "You needn't apologize. No harm was done."
To the rest of his philosophy, she does not reply. Instead, she enters the door. To Turi and Naki she goes and hugs the two boys to herself. Both are alive. Both are well. And Harvest Moon reminds herself that it is important to cherish each thing in the time that it is there, for all must tread the roads of Fate, and Fate always brings change in its wake.
"It was very grown up of you to have waited for us." Harvest smiles for the boys, a thing that she pulls from the banked coals of her heart. "We must be leaving soon. And neither Devrin nor Gerdi may be going with us. Maybe not. We shall see."
"Hold, please." Harvest Moon turns to Fosco Loamsdown by the magic tunnel he has created. "Paladin Florin Jadenth, do you still have the small bit of liquid from the Still?" she asks. "I wish to know what it is, and what its purpose might be. If you have knowledge of the Alchemical arts as do other wizards of which I have heard, Davros Sapphiredge," Harvest says, turning to the mage, "then, perhaps we will be able to discover this here, before crossing back to our Wold. If not, then I have heard that the Catacombs can hire such learning for us, and for a price we may find out for what it is we have come to this pass."
Arminas (AC 22, HP 28/33) Friday September 15th, 2006 10:44:29 AM
Arminas enters the Inn, happy to be out of the bleak landscape. The older children are still up, yet Arminas needs to know about the other children himself. Lorth suggests to Cirena to go check on the others, and Arminas adds:
"May I come with you Cirena? I wish to check upon Lirena."
Arminas then goes and counts the remaining children.
Davros Friday September 15th, 2006 1:56:45 PM
For me to determine what the properties of this liquid is, I need the use of an alchemical lab. Unfortunately I do not posses a means other than identify to determine what the liquid is.
Davros Saturday September 16th, 2006 10:31:53 PM
OOC- i'm home from vac and it looks like everyone had an iteresting week! Thanks Tim for the sub posts!
"Harvest, I need a lab as I said, but perhaps some local help could be found? Either to identify the substance or to provide a lab for us to use."
Florin Jadenth Saturday September 16th, 2006 10:36:42 PM
Florin looks to the others and moves to get himself a drink while he waits to hear if the children are okay.
Florin sips the drink while waiting and speaks again, "I know it is quick but we should get the children out of here tonight and then they surely will be safe from this cursed land."
DM Kathy Sunday September 17th, 2006 11:41:51 PM Lorth asks Cerina to go upstairs and check on the other children, and she leaves, her relieved smile replaced by a look of concern.
Arminas heads up the stairs after her. He finds all the children present and accounted for. Lirena awakens as he pokes his head into the room, and gives him a sleepy smile.
Any orders ale for the party, which is still available, even at this hour. He is quiet, composing in his head, as the others speak.
Harvest greets Turi and Naki with fierce, relieved hugs. They hug her back, and seem to want to stick close. "Did Devrin find you?" Naki asks.
Fosco begins to open the pathway to the Catacombs, but Harvest forestalls him. She asks whether Davros can identify the liquid from the Still.
Davros explains that he'd need a lab to properly identify the potion. He also suggests that the group leaves immediately.
Florin also orders a drink, and seconds the idea of leaving right away.
Ghost Gerdi sticks close to you, looking unhappily at the burden Bralin is carrying. "What's going to happen to Devrin?" she asks in a small voice.
A moment later, Cerina comes back downstairs. "Everybody's here and okay," she says.
Lorth Monday September 18th, 2006 7:12:10 AM
Lorth also expresses his wishes to leave as soon as possible. When Cerina returns he thanks her for watching over the children, and lets her know she is welcome to stay up with the "adults" if she so chooses. Hopefully that will make her feel better.
Harvest Monday September 18th, 2006 10:09:06 AM
Harvest Moon looks into the faces of the two boys.
"Yes, we found Devrin," are the words that she uses in reply. Her eyes drift to Cerina standing nearby.
"Devrin is dead," she explains. "Baelfred was a vampire. He lured Devrin out and he killed him. We arrived too late. We arrived too late to save Devrin. Having been slain by a vampire, Devrin's body became a vampire itself. We were forced to destroy it. We have left it outside for the moment."
Again she hugs the two boys.
"The others are right, you should leave this land as soon as you can. We should have taken you as soon as we entered the Inn. Please, join the others. They will return you to your parents."
Harvest stands and ushers the two boys to a place next to Fosco Loamsdown.
"I will stay. Someone must. To depart now would be to abandon Gerdi. Baelfred also appeared to wish the liquid from the still for some true purpose. If it is possible that it may yet help Devrin, then it must be investigated."
Harvest Moon takes Anthos Westar's hands in hers.
"Thank you," she whispers, "for teaching me of love. Someday, perhaps, if Alemi wills, I will return from this land. But I cannot leave with such things unfinished." Her lips seek his. "I must stay, My Love." Harvest Moon murmurs into his mouth.
Any Monday September 18th, 2006 10:12:13 AM
Any rouses himself as Cerina comes back down the stairs.
"Cerina, before you sit with us, would you go back upstairs, wake all the children, and help them get ready to go? Now that we are here, we want to get you all home as quickly as possible. Thank you."
Turning to the others he says,
"The consensus seems to be to get the children to where it is safe. That being the case, let us go now and put this world behind us."
He is now beginning to hum softly to himself as he checks over his gear, and waits for the children to arrive downstairs.
Fosco Monday September 18th, 2006 12:18:43 PM
Points down the tunnel that was once the fireplace. Take the children down that passage and you will find yourself from whence you came.
Turning to Harvest. You will not be abandoning them Harvest. But surely you will become one of them should you stay. Your abilities are best used in their honor than being turned against honor. Which will happen should you stay in this realm. Eventually everything becomes tainted in this realm. Go with the others, regroup, grow stronger, then, when the time is right, we will come back and invoke the right of vengeance upon the denizens of this realm.
As I see it, Gerdi's ghost can enter the Inn, so why couldnt she stay here til we return? She could listen to others who come and go and be our information gatherer. And when we return, not only will we be stronger in spirit but through her, stronger in knowledge.
Do not forget to bring the boy's body back to the wold. Perhaps the clerics back there will know what to do. Im sure of it.
<*> I will stay to be the last one to go through the portal, giving Gerdi some advice before leaving. <*> Gerdi Highlight to display spoiler: { Watch everyone that comes here. Listen to everything they say about this place and outside those doors. And remember all that you can. We will all be back very soon to get you, and get those bad people that did this to you. I swear it on my honor. Farewell Gerdi. } And just before entering the tunnel I turn to say: remember, watch <points to eyes> and listen <points to ears>. And with a wave, I run down the tunnel after the others.

There is so much more for you to teach, so much more for you to experience. Do not stay behind. Come with us for now, and I have promised to return with you, but do not do this alone."

The dwarf has remained outside the inn. He has moved to a convenient window and dropped his terrible burden out of sight.
But Bralin won't enter. Should anyone look at him, he's pointing rather insistently at the open passageway to the Catacombs.
Florin Jadenth Monday September 18th, 2006 10:05:46 PM
Florin has some of the liquid yet and looks to the others, "I do have some of the liquid but from the sounds we need a lab or such to have it looked at better."
Florin looks to Harvest and shakes his head, "Harvest, I believe we all plan to come back for justice after the children are seen to safty and if they do not then I will return with you but for now please return with us. You have my word I will come back to aid you in finding the vampire and destroying him."
Florin is ready to head on when the others are.
DM Kathy Tuesday September 19th, 2006 12:21:32 AM Any asks Cerina to go up and rouse the other children, make them ready for travel. Lorth tells her she can sit with the adults.
Cerina looks as if she has mixed feelings about getting to be a "grownup." She looks tired, and her knees seem to wobble a little as she turns to climb back upstairs. But she goes without whining.
Harvest attemts to bid Turi and Naki--and her friends--goodbye. She is determined to stay in Koshe-Marr to hunt down the vampire.
The brothers have other ideas. They cling to Harvest, having utterly abandoned any struggle to act adult. "No-o-o-o!" wails Naki, arms wrapped securely around Harvest's leg. "I won't let you! I won't let you!" cries Turi, clinging fiercly to her waist.
Her companions seem equally reluctant to let her go. Fosco and Any urge her to come with them. Arminas vows not to leave without her. Davros and Florin pledge to help her with the vampire at a later time.
Bralin, meanwhile, is outside with the body, waiting patiently for the others to exit through the Catacombs so that he can bring his sad burden through.
The children begin to come downstairs, looking sleepy and bewildered. Lirena is sucking her thumb, something none of you have seen her do before. Hmanny is whimpering and clinging to Kiara, who looks a stooped and tired as an old woman. Clearly, the traumatic events in this place are beginning to catch up with him.
Cerina comes last, crying softly and carrying Dolo. Dolo is sobbing for all he's worth, crying out for his brother. His howls set Gerdi off. Hmanny shifts from whimpering to weeping. Turi and Naki are still going strong, and now Nelle is beginning to cry as well. Other patrons of the Inn begin glancing in your direction, frowning their disapproval.
The passageway to the Catacombs stands open.
Fosco Tuesday September 19th, 2006 2:12:15 AM
Turning to the frowning patrons. What are you looking at? Don't like it, tough, it happens. You want to make something of it? Step outside, me and my friends will discuss it with you. No? Then keep your frowns to yourself.
Lorth, Davros, Arminas, Any, Harvest, Florin, we need to get these children home. I am sure their parents are worried about them.
Will wait to see if they lead the children down the tunnel. Should they finally get off their butts and do so, I will motion Bralin to enter. And again, like last post, will have a chat with Gerdi, then depart as well.
Lorth Tuesday September 19th, 2006 8:01:20 AM
Lorth rounds the children up and hustles them down the tunnel. The group has made the decision to go and Bralin is waiting...
Any d20+7=26 Tuesday September 19th, 2006 10:00:11 AM
Any stands resolutely by. He motions for the others to leave and take the children with them, but he will not move if Harvest does not assent to come also.
He stays by her side, and quietly speaks to her.
"My love I will not leave without you. If you are determined to stay now and find Baelfred to destroy him, then so be it. I will stay also. As you can see, Arminas has made the same decision, and Florin has promised the same.
Whether we kill this beast today or tomorrow, he will die by our hands, this I promise you, but I will not allow you to throw your life away and seek him alone. At the very least we should take one night to prepare our spells, and thus seek him armed and ready. But I would also council going throught the passage into the catacombs, spending what gold we have to buy weapons of efficacy against the undead, before we return. It will not take us longer than just the night I have counciled anyway, and we will be better prepared to cleanse this world, and make it fit for the gods of the Wold.
What do you say my Lady? Will you return with us, and wait one day?"
His eyes are bright, but he stands calmly before her awaiting her answer.

Harvest Tuesday September 19th, 2006 10:53:15 AM
My love ...
The words beat against Harvest Moon's heard like waves pounding upon the shore.
"Please do not misunderstand, Anthos." She touches his arm and looks up into his eyes. "I care nothing for the vampire. But I will not leave Gerdi. Nor will I leave while there is a chance to save Devrin."
"Paladin Florin Jadenth, you think to leave a child of Gerdi's age alone with none about that she knows? You have championed her as a child, rather than a ghost and now that she has proven herself more human than spirit, you would treat her as more spirit than child?"
"Can none of you rememeber what it is to be a child? Can you not see what it would be like to be left behind by those you trust? To be left without those you love?"
"And if there is yet a way to save Devrin, can we leave without pursuing it? If the liquid from the Still can help him, should we not return to the Still and try it?"
"I am not certain even that we can return to this place from the Catacombs. I have been to the Catacombs several times and have never notices a way to this place. If we all leave now, we may be abandoning Gerdi and Devrin to their fates forever."
"Go," Harvest Moon motions to the tunnel that leaves the Inn, "the living children must be taken home." She takes Anthos' hands into hers, drawing from their strength. "But while hope still remains, I will not abandon those who have died in this land."
Any (2nd Post) Tuesday September 19th, 2006 1:10:49 PM
"Then I will not leave either. The others can accompany the children without us. We can remain here with those who do not follow. We do not know that Gerdi and Devrin cannot follow their bodies. Gerdi was able to enter the Inn, there is no reason she could not continue on into the other realm. As for Devrin, we have not seen his spirit yet as we did Gerdi's. Is it held here by the Vampire's will, or has it been destroyed by that evil creature? I do not know, but we shall find out together."
Fosco Tuesday September 19th, 2006 2:48:45 PM
A hoarse laugh emits from his lips.
You don't get it do you. There is no hope while you remain in this realm. The only hope these children have are if you go to the wold and petition for their lives from the god's there. There is a line between honorable and stupidity Harvest and right now you are on that line. Stay here and die, with no help for Gerdi or Devrin. Go and have hope for them.
The way I see it, by you staying, you not only kill yourself, but take a couple others with you. Either way I am helping Lorth save the other children ALL of you swore to protect.
Bralin Tuesday September 19th, 2006 3:18:58 PM
Through the window, Bralin notes that the remaining children are safe and downstairs. The tunnel to the Catacombs beckons.
Lorth and Fosco are making to leave. Yet Harvest delays.
The dwarf looks down at his bundle, and back at the room full of children. He decides the delay, while odd, is not dangerous. No immediate action is required.
Bralin will wait.
[ooc - the body of Gerdi was on a paladin's horse, correct?]
Harvest (2nd llegal Post) Tuesday September 19th, 2006 3:36:09 PM
Harvest Moon tips her head to one side and turns to the halfling with a look of confusion bordering upon anger.
"If you can save these children's lives by petitioning for their lives from within the Wold then it should be done," she replies. "I do not know why you speak of honor, Fosco Loamsdown. There is no question of honor here. There are only the feelings of a child. Is it so difficult and dire to return to the Wold and petition for the souls of Devrin and Gerdi while Anthos, myself and Arminas Calaelen remain here to keep their souls at peace?"
"Or do you say that the Inn is dangerous? Did you not say before that it was a sanctuary? And if it is not, why did you not tell us before we first departed for the Mine? You know many things Fosco Loamsdown, about this land and about the Divine. Things that I was never taught. How is it that you know these things? How is it that you can know them and yet not have warned us about Devrin?"
"You are the second person that we have met within this land that has known much of it. The other was the vampire Baelfred. How is it that you know so much of these things?"
"Can you answer these questions, Fosco Loamsdown?"
Davros Tuesday September 19th, 2006 3:36:24 PM
"Fosco is the most knowledgeable person we have thus far found in this realm. If he suggests that we return with the bodies and then petition the Gods to return their souls, then this is likely the best path that is open to us. Harvest, if you petition the Gods even half as well as you have pleaded with us, I think they will be swayed to listen. You have a strong flame of a spirit and I would hate to see it extinguished."
"I promise you that if we leave now and save the rest of the children, I will help petition the Gods with you. I also promise that we will return and hunt down the despicable creature known to us as Baelfred, and that when we find him, you will have to outrace my magic to get in a few hits before I blast him to pieces."
Arminas - 2nd post Tuesday September 19th, 2006 5:05:18 PM
The torrent of words from Fosco is too much, Harvest answers in kind while Davros sides with Fosco.
Arminas also adds:
"Up until less than an hour ago, we thought Baelfred to be honorable. People can be deceptive, and lately it appears more the rule than exception. How do we know we can trust the halfling? I stake my life upon Harvest, who has proven herself true countless times. She has also made it clear that revenge is not her motive. Her motive is pure, and upon that those of you who do not know her well can judge her. I worry about talk of revenge."
Fosco Tuesday September 19th, 2006 6:04:59 PM
First, lets settle one thing once and for all. If I was a denizen of this realm and wanted you dead, explain to me how I got in this Inn and was able to open the passageway to the Wold? And why, for that matter, didnt the owner and patrons of this Inn kill me by now ? Second, you both have said more than once you want to hunt down and kill Baelfred for what he has done. Where I come from that's called revenge. If you dont think it is, go back to school. Its what they teach.
Third, you asked how I got so knowledgable. I found myself in this inn with a scrap of paper that read: A group of hero's along with children will be by. Help them. And so I waited. for many days that turned into weeks. I watched, and listened to other groups come and go tell about their adventures in that realm and I did one thing that escapes some people. I listened, I watched and I remembered.
Fourth. When you go down that tunnel, the portal closes behind you. And then how you get back is beyond me in knowledge. Perhaps you have to quest to find a way back. Perhaps the clergy might know but I doubt it since the gods' of the Wold has less power here than back there. And how do I know that? I listened to a group come through here with a bunch of black birds for familiars talk about how their clerical magic rarely worked. Have you noticed that too?
Fifth. Harvest. I assumed this inn was a place of safety back when we first me but as you saw, Devrin was lured out of it and subsequently killed. So I dont know any more.
And lastly. After all this. After giving you everything I know about this place knowledge wise. After I have shed blood for and with you. If you still think I am untrustworthy say so and you will never see me again.
Harvest (3rd Illegal Post) Tuesday September 19th, 2006 8:16:26 PM
"It is always better for one's self to speak from a standpoint of trust, Fosco Loamsdown." Harvest Moon remains still. Very still. "Perhaps the inconsistency in your story comes from anger. You had once assumed this a safe place. That has proven not to be the case. We were told at one time, that none from Koshe Marr could enter the Inn. The one who told us this turned out to be a vampire."
"I have twice said that my reason for staying was for the sake of the children and not for the pursuit of the vampire. Have I done something to make you think otherwise and discount what I have said?"
"I would like to believe your story, Fosco Loamsdown. I would like to believe that your soul is good. But your story is unlikely in it's lack of detail. You found yourself here with a scrap of paper. You listen to others for weeks and yet you make declarations on the fate of others with the conviction of a native. I think that in a few weeks time, it would be difficult for me to say with such certainty what is hopeless and what is hopeful. Even if I had done more than simply hear it from stories."
"I would like to believe you, Fosco Loamsdown. But I hope that you have the reasoning to understand why it is that I have doubts. But take heart that did I feel you truly unworthy of trust, I would not allow you to leave with the children."
"If there were some way to know that the spirits of Gerdi and Devrin accompany us back to the Wold, then I would follow. I would like nothing better than to petition Alemi on their behalf, Davros Sapphiredge."
Davros - 2nd post Tuesday September 19th, 2006 9:23:00 PM
"Then please consider doing so Harvest. For I must admit to you the good that is within me rages against the evil of this place and if you choose to stay and fight then you will not be alone. You will have magic by your side."
Fosco Tuesday September 19th, 2006 9:51:25 PM
Then instead of us bickering, ask the spirits to follow you down the tunnel. I have yet to hear anyone ask them if they could. And I havent because it is you who they trust, not I.
Florin Jadenth Tuesday September 19th, 2006 9:55:48 PM
Florin looks to Harvest and takes in a small breath before speaking, "I know what you said but as her champion as you put it I plan to take Gerdi with me back to her home along with her body to be buried. I want to ask my temple in aid for her and maybe in some way this might help her out also."
Florin looks to Gerdi and walks over to her, speaking gently and also laying a hand on Dolo's shoulder, "Now now you two. Please calm yourselves." Florin looks to Gerdi, "We need you to be strong for the other children, we want to get all of you home before anything else happens. To keep all of you safe." Florin looks to Dolo now and kneels as he looks to the boy, "I'm sorry I wasn't able to help your brother, we all are. Your young Dolo and this will be hard to understand and it's not the same as him being here with you but as long as you remember him, he will be in your heart and in your memories. In those two ways he will live forever with you. He was a strong boy as are you and he would be sad to see you crying, you need to be strong for him and now you have to live life for yourself and him. We want to take you and the others back to your parents."
Florin looks to the others and moves to Bralin now, kneeling and speaking to him gently, "Bralin, the parents of Dolo and Devrin may not understand. They might label us as murders for what we did. If this happens I will take the blame. I'm new to this group and it will effect it less with the others. If it comes to it I wish you as leader to consider it for it would be the best thing for the group I think."
DM Kathy Wednesday September 20th, 2006 12:08:19 AM
[OOC: I have unexpectedly been asked to work a lot of overtime this week. I will apologize in advance for what will likely be erratic posting.]
Fosco begins herding the children towards the Catacombs entrance. They shuffle awkwardly, some of them still dazed or half-asleep, but they go. A few cast worried glances over their shoulders at their heroes, but the lure of Home is too strong to resist. One by one, they pass through the statue.
Gerdi's ghost, too, finds the draw difficult to resist. "I'm going home," she says in a tearful voice. "I want my mommy and I'm going home." She drifts through the opening after Cerina. She seems to have no trouble doing this, and you can hear her voice mingling with the other children's as they make their way down some kind of hallway.
Meanwhile, the debate among the companions rages fiercely. To stay here, battle Baelfred, and find some way to restore what was taken? Or return to the Wold, see the children safely home, and petition the gods from there?
[OOC: I'll just remind everyone that Baelfred said he couldn't enter the Inn. Gerdi has already done this.]
Fosco Wednesday September 20th, 2006 1:08:39 AM
Leave it to a child to end bickering. God love em all. And then bounds down the tunnel after her.
Lorth Wednesday September 20th, 2006 7:41:45 AM
Once last glance to Bralin outside the windows and Lorth again shuffles the children down the tunnel trying to keep them all together. He will take Gerdi's body if Florin doesn't already have it. "I will be back", he says to no one in particular...
Any Wednesday September 20th, 2006 10:14:09 AM
"The debate is ended. Gerdi is able to pass through. Let us take Devrin also and return to the Wold. We can then prepare and return if that is what we decide to do.
Many hard words have been spoken in the passion of the moment, more through misunderstanding than anything else. Let us leave this discord here, and make sure these children get to their parents first, before we do anything else, or cause any more hard feelings."
He steps to the door, opens it, and says,
"Bralin my friend, bring your sad burden. The children have all passed through, and Gerdi's spirit has been able to follow her body through the passageway."
He holds the door for him, and then shuts it resolutely behind them both. He is watching for the spirit of Devrin to follow his body back to the Wold. When it does, he releases a soft sigh.
Turning to Harvest, he extends his hand, and taking hers in his, he leads her down the tunnel after the others have all gone ahead. He speaks softly to her.
"You have my oaths my Lady. Be sure that they will be fulfilled."
Bralin d20+3=12 Wednesday September 20th, 2006 10:52:00 AM
Throught the window, Bralin notes the children have moved into the tunnel. Not all his comrades have, but its not relevant to quest. He is already retrieving his burden when Any opens the door.
Bralin enters wordlessly, and heads for the tunnel. He notes Any appears to be waiting for something, and makes a guess as to what [Sense Motive 12].
"Methinks his spirit remains trapped in here," he says, tilting his head toward the wrapped figure on his shoulder. "We must destroy the undead utterly to release him."
She inclines her head to Arminas Calaelen in thanks for his words of support.
Then Harvest takes the hand that Anthos proffers. She says nothing, but she grips it tightly, and she tucks in close to him as they enter the tunnel to exit the land of Koshe Marr.
Davros Wednesday September 20th, 2006 2:52:36 PM
Davros approaches the tunnel and pauses a moment. Magic brought him here and magic now takes him back to the Wold. Here such a short time, and yet so much has happened. There is time now for some rest, and he looks forward to the time when there will be a reckoning with the evil of these lands. Without saying anything, he steps forward and enters the tunnel to the Catacombs.
Arminas Wednesday September 20th, 2006 6:02:35 PM
Arminas nods to Harvest as well. The time in Koshe Marr has been difficult, and with his frustration vented he has little words left.
He follows behind the others down the tunnel, hoping that this time the transportation magic actually works.
Florin Jadenth Wednesday September 20th, 2006 11:16:52 PM
Florin enters the portal also to leave, following his friends and taking one last look back as he sighs and hopes to come back and finish what they started.
DM Kathy Thursday September 21st, 2006 1:15:24 AM
One by one, you step through the portal. You find yourselves in a chill, dank passageway extending back behind the dwarf statue. As you walk, you see the gray mist swirl about you again, but this time there are no accompanying memories of pain, fear, and loss.
At least, none that can't be explained by recent events.
At length, you find yourselves in the renowned Catacombs. The children are staring about them with the stunned, sleepy look of people who have simply absorbed too much in recent days to take any more in. Perhaps in time they'll talk excitedly about having actually visited the famed emporium for adventurers, but at the moment they don't seem to appreciate it.
Nor do the customers and staff in the place seem to appreciate the presence of children. Faces wear frowns ranging from puzzlement to disapproval. The situation isn't helped by ghostly Gerdi, who is flitting about behind the counter as if she owned the place.
Cerina looks at you hesitantly. "Can we get home from here?" she asks.
Lorth Thursday September 21st, 2006 8:13:21 AM
"Cerina, we can indeed get home from this place, and shortly we will", Lorth smiles, releived that they have come through the tunnel to a known place. Lorth ignores all the disgruntled people, they haven't the slightest clue as to what his group has been through.
Harvest Thursday September 21st, 2006 9:36:13 AM
Harvest Moon reaches up on her tiptoes to catch the tip of the ticket from the dispenser. From her haversack, she draws a pouch full of coins.
"Paladin Florin," she asks, "would you be willing to give up the sample of the liquid which we took from the Still to have it's properties identified?"
"It may be helpful, Davros Sapphiredge, to determine whether it has magical properties in and of itself. If you have the spell available to determine this, I would be grateful if you used it."
"Patience, please, children," Harvest calls out to the group, "we will be on our way soon to return you to your parents. There is but one small thing that may help Devrin. Alemi be willing."
When her number is called, Harvest steps to the counter.
"We wish to have this liquid assayed to determine it's alchemical and magical properties. We would also like an expert opinion as to its uses."
Bralin (45/65 hp, -2 lvl) Thursday September 21st, 2006 12:26:49 PM
Bralin's face hardens as Harvest goes to make a purchase. But he dare not speak for fear of attracting the attention of the children on his burden.
The dwarf attempts to find an out-of-the-way corner away from the group. He ignores the patrons of the Catacombs.
Fosco Thursday September 21st, 2006 12:29:40 PM
Calls out and motions the children to come over to some benches and chairs lining the walls. Points to a table with treats.
Grab a cookie or two and then come back here, I will tell you all a story about a man who chased after a woman, fought some battles with another man and a giant, outwitted another man and eventually got his love who was a princess. (Will tell the story of the Princess Bride to the children while we wait)
Any Thursday September 21st, 2006 12:41:34 PM Home. They are home.
This thought goes through his mind as Any looks around the familiar interior of the Catacombs, especially as he knows that there is an exit from the Catacombs in the city of Jarlswolf.
"Let us take the children directly home.
Harvest, we will leave you here to discover what you can. Perhaps Bralin will remain with you with the other two burdens, and then we can deal with the issue of Gerdi and Devrin when we return. We should not be longer than the evaluation will take."
So saying, he begins to move the children out of the Catacombs and to their homes, as long as all agree.
Arminas Thursday September 21st, 2006 2:07:13 PM
The safety of the Catacombs comes as welcome release. Harvest can easily deal with the transaction herself.
Arminas turns to Any:
"Yes, let us get these children to their homes. The parents of Gerdi and Devrin will be upset, yet we must answer to them."
Arminas helps gather the children for the trip home.
Davros d20+15=29 Thursday September 21st, 2006 3:46:53 PM
"The Catacombs-I can't remember the last time I was in this place. :) It's been awhile. Harvest? Yes I can detect for magic upon the liquid. Hopefully we can find out what it is."
Davros takes a slender wand out of its sheath in his robe and utters a simple arcane word. He then concentrates on the waterskin and the liquid within.(spellcraft 29 if needed)
"As for the children, the people you return them to may not know me so perhaps I should stay here with Harvest and Bralin."
Florin Jadenth Thursday September 21st, 2006 10:13:16 PM
Florin moves the wineskin with the remaining liquid from his backpack, he had tied it to try and keep some of the liquid in it and hands it over to Harvest, "Here you go, I hope we can find out something of use from this vile stuff."
Florin looks to the children and thinks, "We should see about getting this children out of here and let Harvest cetchup with us. I do not think it is much liked them being here."
Any Friday September 22nd, 2006 10:41:49 AM
OOC--Assuming Kathy is too busy to post right now, so I will proceed on the assumption that we can do what we are planning.
"Bralin, what do we need to do to free Devrin's soul, and to allow him peace? This should be done before anything else. If you can accomplish this, then I think we can return the other children to their own homes."
So saying, Any gathers all of the Children except Dolo, Devrin, and Gerdi and leads them through the town, stopping at various houses along the way to take the children to their homes. Tearful parents accept their children home, and the group moves on. Finally all have been returned except those three--the hardest three.
He returns to the Catacombs to see what Harvest has discovered, and to see if Bralin needs any further help. or what can be done.
Harvest Friday September 22nd, 2006 11:18:23 AM
Harvest turns at Any's words. She raises a hand in a gesture of farewell. Then, with the suddenness of impulse, she breaks from the line and rushes to the children.
"Goodbye, children." She hugs Turi and Naki to herself, and then stands to walk among them all. "Good bye. You were all very brave and very strong ... " At a loss for words that express her feelings, she waves again while backing away toward the counter.
" ... Peace be with you." From the counter, she watches as Anthos leads them away.
Davros Friday September 22nd, 2006 4:08:01 PM
"Bralin, have you recovered from the vampire's attack yet? Perhaps we can find something here at the Catacombs to restore your strength."
Davros then looks at the door where the path to Koshe-Marr was to see if it is still open.
DM Kathy d6=1 Friday September 22nd, 2006 10:15:01 PM
You decide to split up. Harvest will remain in the Catacombs, learning what kind of liquid the Still produced. Davros will remain with her (right?) to assist with identifying it. Bralin also remains, with his sad burdens.
The others take the children through to Jarlwolf. It is dusk when you arrive--a bit of a disappointment for people who have lived in twilight for three days. The children, nevertheless, begin showing more signs of life. They are still exhausted and traumitized, but their eyes brighten a bit to be so close to home.
The first house you come to is Cerina's. There appears to be nobody home. No lights gleam in the windows, and there is no sign of movement from the house. Cerina's face falls, and her lip begins to quiver. "I guess they're not home," she says, sounding forlorn.
As you approach, though, the door of a neighboring house opens, and a grey-haired woman looks out with a scowl. "Who is that? Who's there?" she demands.
"It's just me, Mistress Oving," Cerina replies in a tired voice.
"Cerina?" Mistress Oving sounds suprised--and overjoyed. "Cerina! Bless you, child, where have you been?" She comes out of her house and down her walk--perhaps not running, at her age, but moving very quickly nonetheless. "Oh! And there's Turi and Naki, and little Lirena, and--and, all of you! Oh, Alemi be praised, you're safely back!" She reaches Cerina and gathers her into an awkward hug. "Your parents are at the Hall, dear, meeting with everyone to try to work out what to do next. Oh! We've all been so worried about you, and--"
She stops abruptly when she catches sight of ghost-Gerdi. She gasps, and begins backing away. She looks at you, now, accusingly. "What have you done? What have you done to that child?"
Meanwhile, in the Catacombs, Davros casts a Detect Magic spell on the potion. He finds that it has a faint Transmutation aura on it. [The Still, if you recall, had a moderate Transmutation aura.] He looks around for the entrance to Koshe-Marr, but can no longer see it.
Harvest is waited on quickly, and is told that an Identify spell, to figure out what the potion is, will cost 110 gp.
[If anyone has, in the past couple of weeks, done any kind of check to figure out what's ailing Bralin, please remind me of it. :) Or, people can make checks now. I'll accept Heal, Knowledge (Arcana), Knowledge (Religion), and/or Spellcraft.]
Fosco Saturday September 23rd, 2006 1:22:36 AM
Stays in the back, almost jumping into the shadows when the elderly lady gasps at Gerdi.
But will let Arminas and Any do the talking.
Harvest d20+7=15 d20+7=22 Saturday September 23rd, 2006 1:12:57 PM
Harvest counts the gold coins from out her purse, one hundred and ten, out onto the countertop.
The words of Davros Sapphiredge start Harvest Moon to thinking of the mysterious diseases that the vampire had cursed Bralin Stoneminder with. Something terrible that would draw so much strength from the powerful dwarf. What in the Earthly or Divine could it be? And more importantly, how might such a thing be healed?
Any Saturday September 23rd, 2006 10:47:04 PM
"Honored Lady, The children have been through much, and we have sad news for some of the village. We will take the children quickly to the Hall, reunite them with their parents, and there explain what has befallen us since the attempted rescue from the caves."
So saying Any leads the way to the Hall to tell the sad tale of Koshe Mar.
Arminas Sunday September 24th, 2006 8:06:32 PM
Arminas follows along, letting Any do the talking. He looks about at the horizon, and gives a whistle. The care of the children has been on his mind, but now his thought turn also to Ewan. Hopefully she fared well while they were gone.
DM Kathy Sunday September 24th, 2006 11:04:48 PM Harvest pays the money, and soon receives an answer: the liquid is a potion of Nondetection. The Catacombs clerk explains that Nondetection is a spell for thwarting Scrying, Clairuadience/Clairvoyance, and all Detect spells.
Harvest also gives some thought to Bralin's condition, and realizes that vampires drain the life force (i.e., levels) from their victims. She seems to recall that there is a Cleric spell that can help restore the lost life force, but she's not sure what the spell is.
Meanwhile, the group in Jarlwolf make their way to the Hall, the excited and exhausted children in tow. Sure enough, when you reach the Hall you find it ablaze with lights and a-bustle with activity.
Predictably, your arrival causes a sensation. You barely step into the hall before somebody spots your group, and you are surrounded by laughing, weeping, exclaiming parents and family members. Most of the children begin crying as they are once again caught in the loving embraces of their families.
There are exceptions, of course. The woman you vaguely recognize as Devrin and Dolo's mother is looking from face to face in your group, and not seeing either of her sons. She has a hard grip on the arm of a bearded man standing next to her, who is presumably the boys' father. He, too, is looking around, and his face grows grim when he doesn't see the boys.
You hear a loud wail off to your left, and look to see a pretty young woman, her face streaming with tears, regarding the ghost of Gerdi with a mixture of horror and love.
Gerdi smiles. "Mommy," she says. "All I wanted was to come home and see you again."
The woman's mouth moves, but no sound comes out.
"I have to go now, Mommy," Gerdi continues. "I wasn't 'posed to stay this long, but I wanted to see my Mommy again." Her ghostly eyes, too, fill with tears. "I want to stay, but I'm really not 'posed to. I have to leave." She is crying in earnest now. "'Bye, Mommy. Try not to be sad." With that, the little ghost vanishes.
Fosco Monday September 25th, 2006 2:01:58 AM
Staying outside the hall I find a tree to lean against. Pulling out a knife I start cleaning the grime from under my nails while listening to the commotion from inside the hall.
Putting up my knife I enter tha hall and find Arminas, touching him on his elbow and as he turns to look: I will be at the inn. I am gonna get a room, a bath and a stiff drink, or 5. Not in that order. If you all need me that's where I will be.
And so, I leave the hall and head to an inn. Whereupon I enter, order 3 mugs of stout, and down em rather quickly, then, getting a 4th I reserve a room and pay for a bath. I will nurse the 5th abd 6th stout through the bath. Order a 7th as I go back into the mainroom dripping wet and naked, and placing my dirty clothes on the counter pay to have them cleaned and pressed. Then, grabbing #7 I stagger back to the room, drain the stout, puke, then collapse on the bed and sleep a long, hard sleep.

Lorth Monday September 25th, 2006 7:57:01 AM
Lorth crosses the room to who is obviously Devrin and Dolo's parents. "Lady please sit down." ,he says, waiting a moment for her to sit, he address's both her and her husband. "Your son Devrin has passed beyond this realm, I am sorry. I can tell you that he was a brave boy, and helped us save all the rest of these children. Dolo is fine, being the loyal brother, he waits at the catacombs with Devrin's remains. I will personally escort you there whenever you feel you are ready to go." Lorth tries to remain composed throughout his short speech, but a tear betrays him at the end. He stands and moves a bit away from Devrin's parents, letting them deal with their grief. He will take them immediatly to the catacombs, if they ask.
Harvest d20+1=16 Monday September 25th, 2006 9:27:00 AM
Her face falls as the Catacombs clerk describes the nature of the potion to her. The name of the spell behind the potion itself is enough to speak to it's purpose and application. It is not a thing that will help either Devrin or Gerdi. It is, no doubt, a thing that the creature Baelfred wished for itself to disguise its nature from the wards at the Inn. (Knowledge Arcana 16)
"If I might have the sample back, please," Harvest requests of the Catacombs clerk. The even tone of the brown girl's voice belies the sadness in her eyes. "There is one among us who wishes to study the sample."
"Thank you."
"This will be no help to Devrin and Gerdi," she says after relaying the results of the Assay to Bralin Stoneminder and Davros Sapphiredge. She speaks to them, but she sees nothing but the floor below their feet.
She kneels next to Dolo, standing quietly next to his brother's body. Harvest takes the little boy's hand in her own and waits in silence. She tastes the salt of her own tears at the corner of her mouth.
"Davros Sapphiredge ... " Her own voice sounds small in her ears, and far away. " ... Bralin Stoneminder's wound is one of the soul. A cleric might restore wholeness to Bralin Stoneminder. But they must needs have a greater connection to the Divine than I. Scrolls might be purchased here to call upon a god's favor. But to see a cleric would be best."
"You should go to a temple, Bralin Stoneminder," she says.
Any Monday September 25th, 2006 9:42:33 AM
Seeing the grief of the parents of those who have not returned, Any looks for some way to comfort them.
He reports to all there the account of what has happened since leaving the caves. Telling the parents of the bravery of their children in the face of the unknown. As diplomatically as possible, he tells of the betrayal of Baelfred, and it's cost. When it comes to the death of Devrin, he simply states that his life was lost to the evil creature, but his soul and body have been brought home to be released as Gerdi's was.
"Would that we could have done more for them. We would all have just as easily given our own life if we couold have returned all of the children whole and sound. The land where we were sent did not offer much in the way of choice to us. All we can do now is offer our heartfelt sympathy and sorrow for your loss, and promise you that there will come a retribution."
Having said these things, he too offers to guide the parents of Gerdi and Devrin to the Catacombs.
Bralin d20+7=12 Monday September 25th, 2006 11:48:32 AM
[Knowledge Region check 12]
Bralin nods at Harvest's words. "Aye, I will attend my wounds. After Devrin is freed."
Shouldering his burden and grabbing the sack, Bralin leaves the Catacombs for Jarlwolf. Once he realizes its just become nightfall, he face hardens.
"Harvest, I must keep vigil o'er this vampire 'til morning. We cannot bring him into the town."
Florin Jadenth Monday September 25th, 2006 4:35:18 PM
Florin looks to the others and then Gerdi when she speaks. He hopes Gerdi will give him long enough to bid farewell to her also and kneels by Gerdi quickly, "Bye Gerdi. I will miss you and I'm sorry I could do no more for you. I hope you know we all wanted to...we all wanted to save you."
Florin looks to Gerdi's mom and stands, moving slowly to her, "I'm sorry to miss. I could not help her and am sorry for that. I did what I thought was best as did the others in bringing her." He sighs at all this and shakes his head, "This was very costly...to much so."
Davros Monday September 25th, 2006 4:43:05 PM
"Harvest, we know the effects of the liquid, but I don't think we should use it. Don't forget the source where it came from. Also, I've been thinking... why didn't Baelfred just get the potion himself? Vampires have many magical powers, surely he could have acquired the liquid potion without our help. I wonder if he was up to more than we have even now discovered. I assume the potion was meant to help him get into the Inn, but for what purpose?"
"At any rate, we know the liquid cannot help the boy, perhaps we should join the others and return the bodies to their families. Then we can decide whether to petition the gods and how to do so."
"Bralin, Devlin as vampire spawn was destroyed wasn't he? If there is danger of him rising again, perhaps we should take his body to the Temple and let the clerics see to his final rest. While we are there, we can get some aid for yourself."
Arminas Monday September 25th, 2006 6:02:08 PM
Arminas stands silently in the back of the hall. A tap on his arm, and he looks down to see the halfling Fosco in desparate need of a bath. Apparently he is going to get one.
"Good idea, I'll see you later."
Arminas then stands silently, the seriousness of the moment highlighted by Gerdi's sad goodbye. At least she was able to speak to her mother. A last goodbye is rare.
DM Kathy Tuesday September 26th, 2006 12:47:14 AM
[sorry; I meant to post this first part yesterday]
Arminas whistles for Ewan, but hears no response. He quickly realizes, however, that he knows Ewan is here someplace. Once again, after many days without it, he can feel her presense along their empathic link.
The eagle, too, senses the link. Arminas gets a definite sense of sleepygrouchyquery, followed almost immediatly by friend!joy! A moment later Arminas senses the bunch and push of muscles as Ewan goes airborn to find him. Darkness notwithstanding.
In the hall, Lorth takes a quiet moment to speak with Devrin and Dolo's parents. They are, predictably, devastated when they hear of their older son's fate. But their minds soon turn to their other son. "Dolo," the mother sobs. "Dolo, my baby. Oh, he must be so scared! I have to go to him. Take us, take us to him, please."
Florin performs a similar sad duty for Gerdi's weeping mother. "She-she was so little," the young woman sobs. "It isn't fair. Why Gerdi?" She looks around at the adventurers still gathered there. "Why didn't you protect her?" Her voices is rising now, becoming angry. An edge of hysteria creeps in. "You were supposed to protect her!"
Any tells the story of the last few days, but he finds the parents a distracted audience. Most are too busy fussing and exclaiming over their returned children; the grief-stricken ones are in no mood to listen.
Fosco abandons the scene altogether, and goes to find a hot meal, a bath, and several stiff drinks. Not necessarily in that order.
The Catacombs staff give Harvest back the liquid, although whether it's safe to use is still an open question. Between Bralin's injuries and Devrin's unusual demise, the three in the Catacombs decide the temple is the best place to be.
You exit the Catacombs with Dolo, and meet a small group coming the other way, with Dolo's parents. Their reunion is bittersweet, with tears of sorrow and joy all around.

Lorth Tuesday September 26th, 2006 8:47:45 AM
After bringing Dolo's parents to him, Lorth goes to the local church where he has been donating his adventuring profits for years (OOC: I only add this because we switch DM's now and again, and I beleive Lorth should be at least looked favorably upon by this church) and asks about a healer who can help Bralin. He explains that Bralin fought a vampire and now feels weaker than he was and what the vampire did to him. If a cleric of suitable power if at the church, Lorth kindly asks what the donation will be and pays it then asks that the cleric come with him to meet Bralin to heal his soul.
Any Tuesday September 26th, 2006 1:08:13 PM
Any tries to share what has happened, but no one is really listening. He follows along with the group to the bittersweet reunion with Dolo and his parents. He again offers his condolences to the family, then moves to help Bralin with the burden of the bodies. Gerdi's parents are sent in a summoned cart with their sad burden, but when Devrin's parents seek to do the same, he stops them.
"Bralin has warned us that we must take Devrin's body to a church, and stand vigil over it untill his soul can be released and sent to Gargul. Please, understand, and your son shall receive his proper burial on the morrow."
It is a hard thing to understand, harder still to enforce seeing the parents grief.
Once they are gone, the group meets Lorth returning from the church with a priest.(Hopefully) They will accompany him back to the church with Devrin's body, and take turns watching over it through the night.
Bralin Tuesday September 26th, 2006 3:22:13 PM
Bralin leads Harvest, Devros and Dolo down the road, carrying the wrapped body all the while.
The dwarf does not relish meeting the boy's parents, and is relieved when Dolo's reunion temporarily distracts the two from what he carries.
Lorth's suggestion makes sense, and Bralin accompanies the paladin to the temple. Along the way, he inquires of Gerdi, nodding in satisfaction at the tale. Her ability to join Gargul confirms his theory of that land, as well as strengthening his opinion of Devrin's fate.
Any's promise that the boy will be buried tomorrow causes the dwarf to mentally cringe. Bralin suspects that may not be true. He will let the temple priest confirm.
At Lorth's offer, Bralin lays a hand on the paladin's arm. "I possess the funds for my own healing."
Harvest Tuesday September 26th, 2006 4:39:01 PM
"Here is the sample from the Still, Paladin Forin Jadenth." Harvest Moon returns the scrap of waterskin to Florin. "The Catacombs has identified the liquid as a Nondetection potion. I hope that this helps you in your studies of undead and the Mysteries of Gargul."
Then she steps quietly back and hurries to Any's side. Her small hand slips into his, and she walks alone in silence as they make their way to the temple.
Arminas Tuesday September 26th, 2006 5:14:10 PM
Arminas follows along after Any, wanting to see this finished before he takes time for himself. He listens, and hears the wings of Ewan on the wind. She is coming.
After they meet up with the others, Harvest mentions the nondetection potion. Arminas nods and says:
"Did not the paladins try and detect evil of Baelfred, and found none? I believe that he could easily have made it to the still in his misty form. He probably drinks from it often, to deceive those who happen into his world. Hopefully Any destroyed the still with fire."
Davros Tuesday September 26th, 2006 9:20:51 PM
Davros follows along slowly to the Temple. He is saddened by the loss of the children and for their families. If you look at him, you can tell he is lost in memory and barely notices what is going on around him at the moment. He seems very distant.
Florin Jadenth Tuesday September 26th, 2006 11:27:36 PM
Florin looks to Gerdi's mom and shakes his head as he can't say he is sorry enough.
Florin leaves with the others and meets up with them as they take Dolo to his parents. Seeing Dolo he kneels down next to the litte man and touches his should softly, "I'm sorry I couldn't do more Dolo. Be brave though and I tell you what, if you want too then keep that holy symbol I gave you to hang on to. I'm sure Domi will watch over you and your family if you keep it safe."
Florin plans to head to the temple with Lorth and also hopes maybe he can pick up a new holy symbol of Domi when he does. (would prefer to do this in game if possible. Will deduct the money if allowed).
Florin also makes a small donation like he has in the Floating City to the church and prays there.
DM Kathy Wednesday September 27th, 2006 12:47:46 AM Fosco has retired for the evening, but the rest of the party is reunited.
After a few solid minutes' hugging their living son, Dolo and Devrin's parents are ready for the task of taking their other son to the temple. "They can t-take care of him there," the mother sobs.
Almost by instinct, Arminas holds up an arm as Ewan comes in to land. The friends are once again re-united, and the eagle shrieks her opinion of traveling around after dark.
Slowly, you all make your way to the temple. It is late when you arrive, but it would seem that you are anticipated. A breathless acolyte awaits to usher you into a private side-chamber where Devrin's body can be laid out. Shortly after you have finished that task, the head priest himself arrives, yawning and still lacing his overtunic. Mumbling a little to himself, he retrives a pouch from his belt, and using the sparkling dust within, casts a spell on Bralin. [Bralin, your levels are restored.]
"No charge for the spell," he says, smiling at Lorth, then looking around at all of you. "Not for the heroes of Jarlwolf. It's the least we can do." He gestures to the acolytes, assembling nearby. "We will also assist you in your vigil." He looks sorrowfully at Devrin. "Poor lad."
"Is there anything else you need this evening?" he asks. "Any healing spells cast?"
Lorth Wednesday September 27th, 2006 7:50:11 AM
Lorth thanks the high priest for the healing. And then helps with the body of Devrin as best he can. If he feels he is in the way he just stands a bit off to the side. Before leaving the church Lorth finds a time when no one is watching and leaves fifteen platinum coins in the poor box.

Any Wednesday September 27th, 2006 12:29:06 PM
Any walks, hand in hand with Harvest, grateful for her warmth and companionship. He is humming a sad mournful tune as they walk.
Upon arriving at the temple, he helps in the arrangement of the body for the vigil, and asks the head priest,
"Can you release the soul of this body to return to Gargul, or lift the curse from him? I believe that will give this poor child the release from this half life to which he has been doomed."
If this can be done, Any will sit nearby with an arm around Harvest untill the vigil is complete. By sharing the burden of the vigil, each person involved is able to get some sleep before the morning comes.
Never a devoutly religious person, Any nonetheless drops several coins in the offering plate as he rises to leave.
Harvest Wednesday September 27th, 2006 3:03:31 PM
The dark of the night is held at bay, less for Harvest Moon, by the lights of the temple, than by the souls of those of those who have come here to watch over Devrin and guide his spirit into the arms of Garul where it may rest in peace. There is such sadness at parting. And there is such fear of death.
Faith is the key, the faith that death merely opens a door to another place.
"Devrin will be missed," Harvest whispers from her place kneeling next to Anthos. "As will Gerdi as well. May peace be with them, and may the road someday guide their footsteps back to those they love."
Bralin Wednesday September 27th, 2006 4:42:58 PM
Unlike the rest of the group, the dwarf is not acting like this is over. He accepts the healing with a nod of thanks, but his mind is obviously elsewhere.
The side chamber is laid out for the body, and Bralin enters cautiously. He looks about, noting the location of the windows, especially those to the east.
The clerics come to take Devrin's body, and his kin attend as well. Bralin's face sets harder as he sets the wrapped corpse on the stone.
He looks at the boy's parents. "Ye must be warned," he states carefully. "Devrin was slain by a vampire. I fear his spirit remains trapped in his form. His form re-animated, a creature of evil. I took,"
a long pause ensues as the dwarf seeks out the most appropriate word....
"precautions"
"to ensure it did not re-animate again. The precautions will be ... unpleasant ... for ye to witness. Ye may prefer memories o'er fact." Bralin looks Devrin's father in the eye, and nods to Dolo. "Tis most definitely not a sight for the boy."
Once the family has made their decision, Bralin unwraps the headless body of Devrin. And pulls from the sack the boy's head, with his Orb lodged in his open mouth. The warrior/cleric positions the body to catch the sun as early as possible.
Arminas (AC 22, HP 28/33) Wednesday September 27th, 2006 6:14:56 PM
Arminas is elated as Ewan lands upon his arm. Arminas strokes the feathers of the great bird as Ewan preens Arminas' hair. Soon though, they must enter the temple.
Going to a nearby tree, Arminas directs Ewan to perch for the night.
"I will return at dawn my freind."
Arminas then goes into the temple to take his turn watching the body of Devrin. When the priest mentions healing, Arminas looks to his side where the spikes in the tunnel tore into his skin. The wound is still fresh, and blood still seeps out.
"I could use healing. I was wounded by a trap in a tunnel."
Florin Jadenth Wednesday September 27th, 2006 8:57:04 PM
Florin talks to one of the clerics about obtaining a new holy symbol of Domi if possible from them and tells them that he is will to pay for it along with making the donation to the place.
Florin smiles before telling them of his donations to the Floating City temple and him willing to donate here since he was in this location now.
Davros Wednesday September 27th, 2006 10:39:37 PM
Wiping a tear on his sleeve, Davros appears to be finished with his wandering thoughts and returns to the present. Upon entering the Temple he takes in all the sights that he can, burning them into his memory. He is glad to make a donation also, even though he has not much to give.(OOC-Kathy should I email the amount? How is this normally handled?)
Respectfully and quietly taking aside anyone he can, he asks "What are we going to do about the children who didn't...make it?"
DM Kathy Thursday September 28th, 2006 12:50:51 AM Arminas persuades Ewan to go perch. He can feel her tiredness, but also her reluctance to be parted from him. She finally goes with a mixture of irritation and lingering joy, scolding him softly in familiar tones.
Eyebrows raise when Bralin unveils the boy's body. "Well," says the head priest, looking a little bewildered. "Well, you certainly were...thorough."
From their expressions, it's obvious that the priests and acolytes think this may have been overkill. Not to mention Devrin's parents, who break out weeping afresh at the sight. But then, none of them have ever been to Koshe-Marr.
Florin asks about a holy symbol, and the head priest asked what happened to the old one. He smiles at the story. "I think we can spare one for you," he says. "One of Trenny's, perhaps," he adds, nodding at one of the acolytes.
He leads you to his office, and rummages about in a small casque on his desk. "Here we are," he says, pulling out a holy symbol of Domi on a simple leather cord. The symbol is made of wood, lovingly carved and smoothed, then painted and lacquered in strong colors. It is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. "Trenny makes these. He says they focus his mind for prayer and meditation. We'd be honored if you would take it."
Arminas's wound is healed, and then everyone (except Fosco, asleep at the inn) sits vigil with Devrin's body. You help each other stay awake (no easy task after what you've endured), but the night is peaceful and the body remains mercifully inert. Dawn finds little Dolo curled up in a corner, sound asleep, his parents looking all but wrung out, and the acolytes and priests trying to pretend they are less tired than they are.
"Breakfast, I think," says the head priest firmly, and leads everyone to the temple refractory. There, a simple but hearty breakfast of porridge, bread, cheese, and fruit is served.
At the inn, Fosco awakens to find his erstwhile companions nowhere to be found, but tempting breakfast smells wafting up from downstairs.
Lorth Thursday September 28th, 2006 7:49:56 AM
Lorth does his morning prayers to Gargul in the main room of the church. After finishing up he returns to where his friends are watching the body. He hopes soon that this will be over and they can figure out a way to return to Koshe-Marr... to visit Baelfred once again.
Fosco Thursday September 28th, 2006 10:27:06 AM
After washing his face, then mouth out with water, I get dressed. Then I bound down the stairs to the common room and order a hearty meal with a light mead. (just strong enough to get the ringing out of my head, but not too strong to cause more damage) After eating, I pay for another 3 days of lodging, and then head out the doors in search of the group and to see what the mood is in the town. Spying a town guard ?? I will ask if he (they) know the whereabouts of them. Once found out, will head there.
Harvest Thursday September 28th, 2006 10:59:09 AM
Dark crescents haunt the undersides of Harvest Moon's eyes. With heavy heart, she sits in prayer to Alemi.
If death brings people to a better place, then why is there so much sadness at their departure? It is a question that Prasix had never answered. Perhaps it is one of the many things that only she could realize for herself.
"I will visit the parents of each of the children today, Anthos," she says quietly over the break fast meal, "to see how each is doing." Her thoughts are fuzzy and far away, and yet, as the new day streams in through the windows of the temple, her heart basks in the radiance of the sun.
Bralin Thursday September 28th, 2006 3:49:30 PM
Bralin nods at the priest's comments. Thoroughness is one of his better traits, and he means to keep it that way.
The dwarf wills himself to stay awake, using Davros' comment as an aid. He replies in a low voice, seeking not to further alarm Devrin's kin. "Gerdi has returned to Gargul. Devrin...I fear not yet. Mayhap with the morn...."
At dawn, Bralin shakes off the offer of food. He's staying put until the sun's rays hit that body.
Any Thursday September 28th, 2006 4:42:10 PM
Any rises and stretches as the sun makes it's appearance. He is watching Devrin's body as the first rays of the sun strike it. As long as nothing else occurs, he thanks the priests for the accomodations and the breakfast.
"Come my Lady. We shall visit each of the homes in their turn, and then we must see to getting some much needed rest. We will also need to find out when the burial proceedings will take place so that we can attend those. I have a song that seems to need singing."
Taking her arm in his, he leads her out into the morning light. He is again humming a slow, sad, almost atonal tune as they walk along.
Florin Jadenth Thursday September 28th, 2006 9:54:05 PM
Florin thanks the priests for the holy symbol and also takes a few gold from his pouch and holds it out to Trenny, "It is quite well made and I thank you and would like to give this to Brother Trenny then in thanks. My other donaction to the church itself. I'm hoping the personal gift might help him get more wood or something to help him out."
Florin does the watch duty with the others and then when morning comes makes his way with the others to get something to eat and enjoys the meal none the less. He does keep a check on Dolo throughout the night along with the parents of Dolo and Devrin to make sure that all are doing as well as could be expected.
Arminas Thursday September 28th, 2006 10:19:23 PM
Morning comes, and the relief of a night free from danger to the remaining children is welcome. No parents should have had to see their son as Devrin's parents did. Arminas shakes his head, and quietly says:
"I need sunlight and trees. Ewan awaits, I will find my food in the forest. Look for me later at the inn."
With that, Arminas turns and goes outside. Ewan is there, and Arminas' heart leaps with joy. He starts walking quickly to the city gate, and soon finds himself at a full run. Ewan flying above, shrieking out a joyous sound.
Arminas runs into the forest until his body heaves with exhaustion. Dropping down by a stream, he drinks long from the fresh water. Ewan hunts for her breakfast.
It is good to be back in the Wold.
Davros Thursday September 28th, 2006 10:51:40 PM
Davros cannot remember the last time he was this tired. He has done a great deal of traveling and more than a few all night study sessions as a test of concentration. But this is more than just physical exhaustion, there is also emotional tiredness and he has a lot of it. He gratefully accepts the offered meal and waits to see what happens with Devrin.
DM Kathy Friday September 29th, 2006 12:41:50 AM
When the first rays of light hit Devrin's body, nothing happens. The body continues to lie quietly as the sun rises and light washes across it. Whatever force once animated the form is gone.
The temple priests are pleased with your donations, and invite you to come to them for any healing you might need in future.
The group from the temple, exhausted from their all-night vigil, eventually make their way to the inn and are reunited with Fosco, looking considerably less tired than the rest.
Some of you make a tour of the town, visiting children's families. You have to get directions to most of them. At each home you visit, you find anxious and relieved family members, and children who still look overwhelmed by their ordeal. Most families are glad to see you, but a few would clearly rather keep to themselves for the time being.
After a few hours, the only home you have left to visit is the farm where Kiara and Hmanny live. It is some distance from town, and some of you have had no sleep. Do you push on, or pause for a rest?
Any Friday September 29th, 2006 9:23:11 AM
Upon hearing the directions to the last home, and the distances needed to get there, Any turns to Harvest,
"Let us rest for at least a few hours. We will have some food to eat, and then retrieve Moonshadow and Frieda from the stables for this trip. Plus we still do not know when the funerals will be held, and we do not want to miss those. I also think that Arminas might want to accompany us on this last visit. What do you say my Lady?"
Lorth Friday September 29th, 2006 10:24:38 AM
Lorth does not go to visit the children's families, he waits with Bralin, then when/if his friend seems he is ready to leave Lorth heads to the inn. He pays for a room and gets some sleep...
Bralin Friday September 29th, 2006 11:49:47 AM
Bralin remains focused on Devrin up until the point the rays of the sun lap peacefully over the boy's body.
Done
Whether or not his precautions were necessary in that other land, he will never know, and thus dismisses the question from his mind. Quietly, he retrieves The Orb.
The quest is over, and Bralin's mind turns from it, opening his senses to the emotions of the past few days.
The dwarf takes a few steps to the nearest wall, leans his back against it, and slowly slumps down to a sitting postion. Exhausted, he peels off helm, one gauntlet, and the other. Already forgotten, the items clatter to the floor. He buries his face in his hands. His shoulders shudder as Bralin silently weeps.
In time, he rises, gathers his belongings and follows Lorth to the inn. He doesn't even bother removing his platemail as he collpses into the nearest offered bed, to dream troubled dreams of failure and loss.
Harvest Friday September 29th, 2006 11:58:58 AM
Harvest Moon lifts a sleepy face up to Anthos and nods. It had been a difficult day. To each parent, the tale of the journey. Stories of their children and their bravery in the face of the cruel sunless land.
Poor Devrin. Poor Gerdi. Poor Meg. Poor Drosera.
As they lie in bed together, before the arms of sleep come to claim them, Harvest Moon snuggles into Anthos' chest, feeling the pleasant rise and fall. Her eyes are touched by a glimmer of worry. Then, even that fades, as the Wold becomes one with the Land of Dream.
Davros Friday September 29th, 2006 8:12:16 PM
Resting a few welcome hours at the inn, Davros wakes early and practices his mental exercises to focus his mind. Once he is in the proper state, he begins memorizing a new set of spells, and finds himself relaxed by the old familiar arcane words.
Florin Jadenth Friday September 29th, 2006 9:23:12 PM
Florin plans to go to the Inn with the others planning on heading there. When Bralin morns what all has happened, Florin moves over and places a hand on the sturdy dwarf's should and squeezes it once, just to let him know that their are bonds of friendship between him and the others and Florin worries for his friend.
At the Inn Florin heads to a room and that he offers to pay for and moreless falls into it and closes his eyes for blessed sleep.
Fosco Friday September 29th, 2006 10:39:49 PM
Will roam around the town while the others get their rest. At noon will grab some food from a street vendor, and then find a place under a shade tree to catch a nap.
Any (2nd post) d20+10=17 Saturday September 30th, 2006 10:54:37 AM
Around midafternoon, after a few hours sleep, the routine of the last several months takes hold, and Any awakens. He quietly looks around the room, making sure everything is secure and where it should be. He smiles at that thought, feeling the weight of Harvest's head on his shoulder. As much as he would like to stay just where he is, there are things that need doing.
He carefully slides out of the shared bed. If Harvest wakes, he tells her he is going to check on the horses. If not, he writes a quick note, and then quietly leaves the room.
Going down to the stables, he greets Moonshadow with some carrots acquired from the kitchen staff. His friend is in excellent shape, yet he still takes the time to curry him, and tell him to prepare for a journey.
Any then moves to the stall containing Frieda, and gives the same care to the large mare.
On returning to the Inn, he asks the proprietor if they have heard when the burial ceremonies for the two children will take place. Then ordering a small cold ale, he sits at a table and is seen and heard humming and singing quietly to himself.

Arminas Sunday October 1st, 2006 9:01:13 PM
Arminas settles into the tall grass along the edge of the stream, exhaustion overtakes him. A dreamlike state takes over. At first he is haunted with pictures and thoughts of Koshe Marr, but contact with the grass and flowers along the stream bank seem almost like magic. Soon, the sights and sounds of the wild Wold come into his mind. He is awaken by Ewan flapping her wings, offering Arminas a freshly killed rabbit. Without taking time to cook it, Arminas tears into the animal.
Nature at its rawest form has brought his mind and body back.
Though he dreads it, it is time to return to the Inn to check on his companions. Slowly this time, he walks back to town.
DM Kathy Sunday October 1st, 2006 11:44:57 PM
After a few hours' sleep, you all feel more like yourselves. Any has spent some time caring for the animals, who look fit and healthy (if a little bored).
You ask about funeral arrangements, and learn that Devrin's funeral will be tomorrow. Gerdi's will be in a few days, as there are apparantly some out-of-town relatives who will be coming.
For now, you are at liberty, with no greater challenge to deal with than well-meaning townsfolk--although they are kind of challenging. Most of them are inclined to treat you as heroes for bringing the children (or most of them) safely home, which is a trial to anybody not feeling especially heroic today. A few seem to share the opinion of Gerdi's mother--that you should have done a better job of protecting them. Dealing with them isn't much easier.
Bralin d20+13=23 d20+13=17 Monday October 2nd, 2006 9:35:43 AM
Upon rising, Bralin joins the group for breakfast. Passing Florin, he clasps the paladin's forearm in gratitude for yesterday's support.
Hearing that Devrin's funeral is tomorrow, the dwarf immediatetly leaves the table and seeks out the local stonemason.
"I require a stone block," he informs the man, and proceeds to point out a suitable looking piece. Time is of the essence, and yet the rock must last. He chooses common granite, as large a block as 20 silver pieces can garner.
Bralin is practically jogging as he bursts back into the inn to grab his stoneworking materials. He leaves the inn, and finds a spot that will stay secluded. For the next 20 hours, all that is heard from him is the "tink, tink, tink" of metal on stone.
[Two craft checks (stoneworking) - 23 and 17 vs DC 15 = 600 cp (whew, just made it).]

Monday October 2nd, 2006 12:01:25 PM
Her eyes flutter open. The sunlit window waits across the room, through the blurry forest of hair that hangs over her eyes. The softness of the bed. The clean sheets tucked up under her chin. What a strange and terribly comfortable feeling. Her hand roams the space beside her. The bed still retains his warmth.
She slips from the bed naked and pulls her tunic over her head. Another unusual feeling, to undress for bed. How much more complicated than to simply climb into her bedroll still clothed in her old worn and tattered robe. So many things have changed.
In bare pink feet, Harvest Moon pads to the square of sunlight splashed across the floor near the window.
"Please Alemi, if there is even the most narrow of paths for you into Koshe Marr, could find your way to the spirits of Devrin and Gerdi and touch them with your light so that they know that others still think of them and that they are not alone."
"Please grant health and peace of mind to Turi and Naki, to Cerina and Lirena, to Nelle, to Kiara and her brother Hmanny, and to Dolo who has lost his brother Devrin. Please bless them and their families with your presence as they have suffered ... "
The litany of prayer fills the early morning.
Later, Harvest dresses and goes in search of Anthos, finding him at the stables caring for Moonshadow and gentle Fyrda. The big plow horse appears very happy, and Harvest raises up on her toes to place a kiss upon Anthos' cheek. From the stable hands, she receives directions to the farm where they will visit Kiara, Hmanny and their parents. In her book of maps, she pens the way.
Any Monday October 2nd, 2006 12:34:18 PM
The caress of a kiss on his cheek alerts Any to the arrival of Harvest. Intent on his chore, her lightfooted approach went unnoticed. He smiles at her as he finishes.
"Frieda has missed you. She told me so. They are both ready for a ride into the country. Shall we find Arminas, and see if wants to ride along? I think that Darkfire would enjoy the journey also.
So saying, he goes out into the compound just as Arminas enters.
"Harvest and I are riding to visit Kiara and Hmanny. Would you like to ride along with us?"
If the answer is yes, he turns back to the stables, and saddles the horses. Then taking up his gear, he first holds a hand for Harvest, and then mounts himself, and following Harvest's written directions, ride out to the farm for this last visit.
Arminas Monday October 2nd, 2006 1:36:10 PM
Arminas greets Any and Harvest, and is pleased to see that Any has taken care of the mounts.
"Yes, a ride would be nice. Really any excuse to get out of town would do. Where do you plan on going?"
Overhead, Ewan flies in slow circles.
Florin Jadenth Monday October 2nd, 2006 8:22:10 PM
Florin wakes and goes to get something to eat. He smiles and nods to Bralin, clasping the sturdy dwarf's forearm in return and smiles gently. During breakfast Florin moves over to Lorth and speaks to him, "Mind if I join you my friend? I was thinking about training some afterwhile and had hoped you might like to spar with me. No real weapons of course."
Florin this morning is happier then normal because all his work and effort has payed off and he has taken his first steps towards the Undead Hunter that he wanted to be. He speaks to Lorth about this also as he tries to get to know the paladin more, "I started the path of the Undead Hunter now. I'm hoping it might aid us also in finding and dealing with certain issues. I'm glad Gargul and Domi are good friends otherwise me going into that might be looked bad on I guess. I understand that Undead Hunting is more of Gargul's domain."
Davros Monday October 2nd, 2006 8:29:52 PM
After breakfast, Davros wanders the town to refamiliarize himself with it. The last time he was here was only a short visit and he did not have time to get to know it well. He finds out when the funerals for the children are planned and after a few hours he looks for any library or mage guild which may be present.

DM Kathy Tuesday October 3rd, 2006 12:46:26 AM
Upon hearing the funeral is tomorrow, Bralin realizes he doesn't have much time. [Although, looking at it another way, it's not as if Devrin is going anywhere.] The dwarf acquires a beautiful piece of granite in a pale golden color, and sets about carving it, expending every bit of his concentration.
Meanwhile, Fosco and Davros wander the streets of Jarlwolf, becoming acqainted with the place. They find it peaceful enough--right up until when they are recognized. Then things get a little more lively as the townsfolk want to meet them and exclaim over their deeds.
Florin is more interested in working out some of the stiffness from the long adventure, and invites Lorth to join him.
Any, Harvest, and Arminas take their horses and ride out to the farm where Kiara and Hmanny live. The horses seem glad for the exercise, although Darkfire is so restless at the beginning of the journey that he is hard to handle. He eventually settles down, though, and the three of you make the journey in just under a half-hour.
You find the farmhouse to be a snug, well-made, and unassuming dwelling. Chickens scratch and squabble in a penned-in yard to one side of the house, and a man in homespun clothing is splitting wood on the other side. On the porch is Kiara, staring blankly down at a rocker churn as she rocks it back and forth.
The man who was splitting wood comes around from the side of the house and moves toward you. You note that, although he holds it casually, he has not put down his axe.
"Yes?" he says as you approach. "Do you want something?"

I will be going out of town from the 12th - 16th of October. Is there someone who could sub for me on those days?
Lorth Tuesday October 3rd, 2006 7:36:43 AM
Lorth accepts Florin's invitation to spar. "I would be more than happy to spar with you.", he says. "One must follow one's heart when deciding what to do, if you wish to be an undead hunter, then I will support you fully in your endeavor.", Lorth smiles. "My course to to follow the true paladin's route and I will stay there." Over eating their meal, Lorth tells Florin, how he was raised in this area, and his mother still resides here in the nearby woods. He tells him of his quest to recover his father's remains, how the swords of light helped him accomplish the task and how he had to face his father's undead form and lay it to rest. As he talks he becomes more serious, remembering vividly those past tasks... When he is finally done he says, "I'm ready to spar whenever you are finished."
(OOC: Read the games archives, In the dread of night, Lorth I am your father, for all the details :) )

It was a hard ordeal, especially for the children, though I might say that your two more than showed your good upbringing of them.
Might we step down and visit for a few minutes?"
Any does not immediately dismount. He senses that something does not seem right here, but does not let anything show in his face. Maybe he has been in danger too long while in Koshe Mar, and it has affected his judgement.

Harvest turns her smile to the Hmanas girl on the porch and raises a hand in greeting.
"How have your children been?" she asks the man. "Since returing to you from the accident?"
Some people are less welcoming than others. Some for good reason. "Has all been well with you and your family?"
Bralin Tuesday October 3rd, 2006 4:15:11 PM
Bralin works intently, totally ignoring the outside world. Even now, he wears his axe, though.
Davros Tuesday October 3rd, 2006 4:19:31 PM
With a flourish of his dark blue cloak, Davros introduces himself and invites the townsfolk to ask any questions that they would. He then gives a lengthy and somewhat boring account of the trials of Koshe-Marr. He drones on about the land, the sky and spends way too much time talking about the plant-life. If any of the citizens managed to linger throughout the entire lecture, he waits to speak with them.
Arminas Tuesday October 3rd, 2006 6:07:01 PM
Upon arrival, Arminas shouts a greeting at Kiara.
"Greetings Kiara, I'm glad to see you are safely home. How do you fare?"
When the man walks up Arminas stays upon his horse, and nods a greeting to the man.
Florin Jadenth Tuesday October 3rd, 2006 10:10:13 PM
Florin listens intently to what Lorth says and nods as he replies, "I see, you have a long history and sounds like it is painful in some places also." Florin smiles and stands, walking outside and ponders what to use to spar with, some sticks of sword length would work as to not harm each other and their armor would protect them from any serious damage.
Florin speaks to Lorth while they practice and just try to get some of the wearyness out of his muscles, "My past isn't overly great either really. I came from the Floating City which recently during the Fey King stuff fell under attack by alot of plant creatures. The City was over ran and tilted towards the lake more, damage and killing alot of people....some of which were orphan childre." Florin is alittle shaky on the last account because he himself wished he could of protected the children better, "My own adopted child, her name is Jella was harmed by a disease in the attack and I traveled into this area searching for a herb to cure her. I found the herb and sent it back and now teamed up with you and the others." Florin snaps his fingers and frowns, "Darn, I got to see about sending money to the Float also for Jella. I sent her back to be with my parents and I promised to send money to help them take care of her." Florin's words hint that maybe he doesn't care for his parents but he speaks little on it other then glancing to the signet ring of his family's royal crest on it.

DM Kathy Wednesday October 4th, 2006 1:18:58 AM
The townsfolk who make so bold as to talk to the "heroes" soon find themselves disappointed. Fosco fades into the shadows and disappears, while Davros gladly pontificates about the least interesting parts of the adventure. One by one, he loses his audience, until he looks out and sees only a boy of about 7, blinking owlishly at him. "My cat had kittens," he announces, obviously feeling the need to share scientific data.
Meanwhile, the two paladins sparring are also attracting some attention, mostly of the female variety. It isn't every day that the women of Jarlwolf get to watch two charismatic and well-muscled young men in a contest of arms. Smatterings of applause greet your mock swordplay.
At the farm, the man seems to relax. "Ah. The heroes," he says nodding. "Welcome. We are grateful for your care of Kiara and Hmanny." He takes a worried glance over his shoulder at where Kiara still sits, rocking the churn. "Perhaps you'd like to speak to them," he says, a trifle uncertainly. "Keeri!" he cries, heading toward the house. "Keeri, some of the heroes have come to see the young ones. Can you bring Hmanny out?"
Harvest asks how the children are faring. "Well enough," the man replies. "It was hard on them, but we're grateful they're back."
On the porch, Kiara continues to rock the churn. Back and forth. Back and forth. She watches it as it rocks. Back and forth. Back and forth.
Arminas asks her how she is doing. "I'm well, thank you," she replies, still watching the churn. "Thank you for coming to see us."
The door of the house opens, and a woman comes out, holding Hmanny in her arms. She's a bit small for such a feat--Hmanny is a well-grown lad of 6--but she clings to him with a determined strength. "Hello," she says, wrapping protective arms tighter about her son.
"Hmama, let me down," says Hmanny. "I'm hnot a baby."
The woman only clutches him more tightly. "Can I offer you some refreshment?" she asks you. "You've had a long journey."
Lorth Wednesday October 4th, 2006 7:50:21 AM
Lorth tries to ignore the audience, while sparring with Florin, as it takes all his concentration to put up a good fight. Eventually he gives in and bows slightly to the watchers, "Thank you kindly for the applause.", he says. He wipes his brow, then takes up the fight again whenever Florin is ready. Lorth tries a few fighting styles throughout the session, from single sword, to sword and shield, to two swords at once.

Florin looks to the females they have gathered to watch them and can't help but blush alittle as he bows to them, "I do hope we are entertaining you all well with our practice. Any of you like alittle instruction on the use of a sword? Never know when it might come in useful." Continues doing what I posted last time.
DM Kathy Thursday October 5th, 2006 1:26:28 AM Any, Harvest, and Arminas spend some time at the farm. They find both parents to be friendly enough, but very wary, and extremely protective of their offspring. The mother hardly ever sets Hmanny down.
The children, too, have clearly been affected by what they've seen over the past few days. Kiara continues rocking the churn as if in a daze, although she does respond to questions, and remembers her "pleases" and "thank yous" like the well-mannered child she is. Hmanny is more clingly and childish than you remember him.
Aside from their obvious trauma, however, you get no sense of anything wrong. You get the sense that this is a close-knit family that has been through something terrible, and is dealing with it as best they can.
Kiara tells you one of the effects that recent events have had on the family. "Hmanny and I aren't going back to school," she tells you as she watches the churn rock. "Hmama will teach us at home."
Bralin continues to work on his piece of granite, and Davros heads to the Catacombs to do a bit of shopping.
Lorth and Florin acknowledge their audience, and Florin offers to teach some of the ladies how to wield a sword. A few of the bolder ones accept his offer, and spend the next 30 minutes or so displaying a complete lack of aptitude for swordplay. They can never seem to remember how to grip the hilt, and must be shown over and over. They seem more interested in what their hair and clothing is doing than where their practice "swords" are pointed. And when anything remotely exciting happens, they have a tendencey to shriek, giggle, and drop their "blades" in the dirt.
It's all for show of course, and it doesn't take much of a Sense Motive to realize that they are "acting girly" and pretending to be a lot more helpless than they really are. There's one in particular--a black-haired minx with sparkling dark eyes--that you suspect knows her way around a sword pretty well, although she's putting up a front along with the others.
Lorth Thursday October 5th, 2006 7:53:30 AM
Lorth does his best to entertain the girls, but he settles more into the role of Florin's "wing-man".
When offered Lorth gives Florin's greatsword a try, it is a bit heavier than he is used to, and he tires out much quicker than normal.
Any Thursday October 5th, 2006 11:36:49 AM

"We have taken up enough of your time here. We are glad to hear that you will be continuing your education. Thank you for your hospitality."
So saying, he draws Harvest up, and giving each their a handclasp of farewell, he moves to where the horses wait. He knows Harvest well enough to know that she will impart more than a handclasp, especially to the children.
When she is finished with her goodbyes, he will again offer her his hand to mount, and then lead the way back towards town.

"Thank you again for your hospitality. If you need anything you may reach us through the Pitchfork Council in Jarlwolf. Good bye, Hmanny."
Harvest waves as she returns to Fyrda. Then with a small leap, and Anthos' hand, she vaults to the saddle.
"Good bye. Peace be with you," Harvest Moon calls out as Fyrda turns to follow Moonshadow on the return trip to Jarlwolf, without having been given rein nor command to do so.
