DM Shegger Friday October 6th, 2006 10:00:40 PM Day 8
The dawn is gray. The air is thick and heavy and cold. As the crew begins to troop above decks to begin the day's work, Captain Finnliath appears.
"Lubbers! We be close. Very close. Can ye feel it right in yer bones?!" His ghostly features twist into anger. "I know it. I tell ye all. I know that this be the time I come away with me daughter!"
The day's work is done in relative quietness, save for the captain's orders. The weather, along with the Finnliath's prophetic words, instill an erie feeling throughout the ship.
That night, you are ripped into wakefulness by a loud crack that shakes the entire boat. Moments later, the captain's voice floats down to you. "To arms! To arms! We are attacked!"
Oni AC19 61/61hp Sunday October 8th, 2006 2:11:45 AM
At the sound of the captains shouts, Oni is up and gripping his bow. He straightens his quiver for easy retrieval of arrrows as well.
Theodore & Macaw Sunday October 8th, 2006 1:49:25 PM
Theodore tumbles out of bed and pulls his clothes on. His face is stern, the muscle that operates his jaw bunches as he fidgets with the straps of his haversack.
After loading his crossbow, he quickly moves to main deck.
Rose Sunday October 8th, 2006 2:38:53 PM
Rose wakes and ties a everburning ribbon in her hair. She quickly dresses and grabs her equipment.
She'll hand her remaining everburning ribbons to three other people so they can see and heads up to the main deck.
Piper flies along carrying her bag of tricks.

Vauhwyt casts Alter Self. She changes herself into a liontaur and Mookie into a Monkey. Then she takes a move towards the deck where the ruckus is.
Dietrich Monday October 9th, 2006 8:47:58 AM
"*&%¨&%(*&" Dietrich wakes and starts putting his gear on as fast as he can. He´s a feeling his going to need it.
The warrior feels the adrenalin and a strange and irrational happiness about the attack. ONce he´s ready, he says "Domi be with us!", takes the bow and runs upstairs.

DM Shegger Monday October 9th, 2006 9:48:54 PM
Above, chaos reigns. As your burst onto the scene, you enter into any seaman's worst nightmare.
A violent thunderstorm rocks the longship. Rain lashes the swinging deck, making the wood slippery. The wind is fierce, whipping cloaks, and blowing out torches.
To make matters worse, several tentacles as thick as Dietrich's legs sprout from the sea on the right side of the ship. Captain Finnliath turns as you come from below. "Lubbers! It's a fight!"
OOC - Unfortunately, I don't have excel, so I can't make a map, unless there are other suggestions.
The stairs leading below are 10' from either side of the ship. The creature takes up 10' on the side of the ship, so four people could initiate melee with it.
Everyone must make a Fortitude DC 15 check against the wind EACH ROUND. Small creatures who fail are knocked down. Medium creatures who fail are checked (meaning they can't move for that round, though you can still take actions).
Everyone must make a Fortitude DC 12 check or get seasick for 2 rounds (can take no action other than vomiting).
Everyone must make a Balance DC 15 check due to the slick deck EACH ROUND. If you fail the check by 4 or less means you can't move for 1 round. A failure by 5 or more means you fall.
If anyone moves, the Balance DC increases to DC 18 due to the heavy wind.
The order in which you come above decks is Oni, Theo, Rose, Vorelle, Vauhwyt, Dietrich, and Berlon as per posting order. Olyn is still below decks.
DM Shegger Monday October 9th, 2006 9:58:06 PM
OOC - Amendment: Olyn comes up last. Musta posted while I was posting.

Vorelle [AC 18; hp 63/63] d20+8=25 d20+8=22 d20+4=6 Tuesday October 10th, 2006 12:03:17 AM
As she comes up on deck, Vorelle remains steady despite the lashing wind [Fort 25], and the rocking of the boat doesn't seem to affect her stomach [Fort 22].
The slippery deck, however, proves to be her undoing. She takes one step and falls flat on her face [Balance 6].
[OOC: If Vorelle remains prone, does she still need to make the Fort save to battle the wind?]

Rose steps out onto the deck and is immediatly buffeted by the wind which knocks her over, that combined with the movement of the boat causes her to be violently ill.
Meanwhile piper has just as bad of a time if not worse, unable to fly in the wind and rain piper will do her best to get back down to the cabin.

Oni AC19 61/61hp d20+10=27 d20+10=20 d20+3=10 Tuesday October 10th, 2006 1:19:33 AM
Oni lands on the deck with legs sprawled. The rocking of the boat doesnt seem to bother him. The wind is a mighty gale, and as he leanshis large frame in that direction, his footing fails. He lands without anything to break his fall. Only saving grace is he hangs onto his bow.
Dietrich AC 20 HP 71 d20+7=15 d20+7=14 d20+6=14 d20-1=3 Tuesday October 10th, 2006 8:29:56 AM
Dietrich comes on deck and can hold against the wind (fort 15) and against the shaking (fort 14). (ooc ignore the second 14, took a reflex save instead of balance test). But the slippery deck, together with the hindrances presented by his armour, make the warrior fall to the floor.
"%$#&¨%!" Even laying flat, Dietrich puts away the bow and fast-draws the great-sword (free action). Should any tentacles come near...
He yells: "Make some magic to protect us from wind and water! Otherwise we´ll be dead meat!"

[OOC: I forgot to roll for my spell fail chance last round! Sorry! Rolling now ... a 55 is no problem.]
Fortitude DC 15 EACH ROUND. Small creatures who fail are knocked down. Medium creatures who fail are checked.
Vauhwyt, size large, is unaffected either way? Her Fort save is an 11, so let me know if that adversely affects her.
Mookie, size tiny, gets a nat 20 and is steady as a rock.
Fortitude DC 12 check or get seasick for 2 rounds (can take no action other than vomiting).
Vauhwyt rolls an 11 on this check. She is sick and inactive for this round.
Mookie rolls a 20 -- his cast iron stomach stands him in good stead.
Balance DC 15 check due to the slick deck EACH ROUND. If you fail the check by 4 or less means you can't move for 1 round. A failure by 5 or more means you fall.
Vauhwyt has no problem with her balance despite her queasiness.
Mookie, in monkey form, clings ably to Vauhwyt's shoulder.
ACTION:
Mookie caws into the storm, "Jeezum Crow! You wimps can't even deal with a liitle breeze!"
Vauhwyt throws up.
Mookie flaps his arms, forgetting that they are not wings, and says disgustedly, "Boss! Eww, BOSS! Turn your head! You almost got puke on me! Gross!"
Looking around, so far the raven-in-monkey's-clothing sees no action being taken against the monster. "I guess it's up to me to save us!"
Mookie pulls a ball of fur out of the bag of tricks and tosses it in front of the monster. A 51 means that a wolf appears.
The wolf rolls a 19 and a 15 on his fort saves. He rolls an 8 on his balance check. The wolf is prone.
"Stupid Wolf!" caws Mookie.
If the wolf can stand from prone, he will (though that will provoke an AoO). If not, he'll just bite from prone. The wolf bites AC16 while prone, or AC20 if he has managed to stand up. The wolf bites for 7 hp damage. He also uses his trip ability, His trip roll is an 8 -- not enough by far!

The wind is too powerful for Theodore and he can't move after coming up to the main deck. (Fort 12) He almost loses his supper from the violence of the storm and the unstability of the ship (Fort 11) but manages to tough it out and focus on the danger they are all in. (Hero Point for Fort 25) He also manages to keep his balance and peers at what exactly is going on. (Balance 17)
Seeing tentacles, he aims a web spell among the tentacles to entrap or slow them.

(OOC - Large creatures don't have to make the first Fort check against the wind. Also, ranged weapons are useless in this storm. Should've said so last post.)
The storm alone proves to be much to handle for the heroes. Vorelle's spirit is strong, but her feet aren't accustomed to the slippery deck and she finds herself kissing the floor. (OOC - Yes, you can stay prone and avoid the Fort check for the wind)
Rose is completely overcome by the storm and falls to the deck spewing out her guts. (OOC - No sliding. You're good. Just out for this and next round being sick)
Oni, like Vorelle, resists the wind and his stomach stays cool, but the wet deck proves to be stronger than he and he collapses to the deck.
Dietrich also slips and falls to the deck. He has the presence of mind to draw his greatsword, though.
Vauhwyt keeps her feet but the contents of her stomach decide to escape when given the chance. Vauhwyt doubles over in sickness. (Unable to act for this and next round.)
The monkey, Mookie, tosses a wolf which promptly slips to the ground but quickly bounds back up, taking a clubbing blow to the back of his head. (7 hp damage to tentactle 2) The wolf growls and takes a hunk out of the same tentacle.
Theodore's movement is stopped by the wind. With heroic effort, he keeps his dinner down and his balance stable. He manages to get off a spell and a thick, gooey web appears amongst the tentacles. It appears that two of the four showing tentacles are entangled and cannot extend beyond five feet of the railing.
Berlon and Olyn remain just below the entrance to the main deck.
The four warriors burst to the top, ready for action.
Sharif manages to resist the wind and his roiling guts, but takes one step and falls on his rear.
Thorir manages to shrug off all effects of the storm and moves forward to slice at one tentacle with an ornate battleaxe, chopping almost completely through. (8hp damage to tentacle 1)
Arngrim moves five feet foward, maintaining ten feet from the rail and spins a deadly spiked chain about for a second before it shoots out and takes the rest of Thorir's tentacle off (7 hp damage to tentacle 1. Severed)
Leo takes a stand against the wind, and keeps his balance on the swinging deck. Unfortunately, the combination of storm and rocking ship are too much for his stomach and he joins Rose and Vauhwyt in their endeavor to coat the ship with barf.
In a flash of lightning, you can see a great bulbous head just beyond the side of the ship. It looks as if your enemy is a giant octopus. It currently has three working tentacles above the deck, one stuck neatly to the rail of the ship.
With a powerful downward blow from one of the tentacles, the octopus snaps the spine of Mookie's summoned wolf. The wolf yelps once and lies still. (Tentacle 2 hits wolf for 9 hp damage)
With a sideways blow, another two tentacles lash out and hit Thorir hard, and grip him about the waist and chest. (8 and 9 hp damage and grappled Thorir with tentacle 3 & 4)
Vorelle [AC 18; hp 63/63] d20+8=16 d20+4=16 Wednesday October 11th, 2006 1:14:08 AM
Vorelle quickdraws her handaxes [free action] and stands up [move-equvilant action]. The wind again attempts to buffet her, but she resists [Fort 16]. She tries to move forward to engage the creature, but can't quite catch her balance on the slippery deck [Balance 16].
[I'm assuming Vorelle still has to move to get over to where the creature is?]
Oni AC19 61/61hp Wednesday October 11th, 2006 1:34:10 AM

Once that is done he will take a move action to move on deck, drawing his mace as he goes. He manages to keep from being knocked down by the fierce winds (Fort Check 18) and seasickness doesn't yet seem to be a problem for him either. (Fort Check 18)

Should Dietrich not be able to crouch to any target, he´ll grab the next best piece of rope he can, and lace it on himself, so as to avoid being thrown into the sea.

The giant octopus tries to drag Thorir over the edge of the ship. With a herculean effort, Thorir drops his battleaxe and plants his feet against the rail of the ship. "Graaaaaah!!"
Even through the storm you can see the raw terrified look on his face as he struggles to keep his life. His head is thrown back as he pushes with his legs to escape the double-tentacled grip.
The octopus is simply too powerful. With a desperate shrieking plea for help, he is lifted from the deck and plunges into the boiling sea.
Only one working tentacle remains on the ship, stuck by the webbing to the railing. The tentacle rises as if to rip the webbing away. After a few struggling attempts, it remains stuck.
Vorelle stands strong against the wind, maintains her balance, but cannot move forward. (OOC - Yes, you must move to the side of the ship which is 10' away)
Oni also stands, but cannot move forward. (OOC - You have to get 10 or less on your balance check to fall. You are standing)
Olyn remains just inside the stairway and casts a spell upon himself.
Berlon casts a spell on himself, managing to withstand the storm. (OOC - Make sure you make the Balance check)
Dietrich rises up to attack, but doesn't have the time to swing his powerful sword. (OOC - Standard move to stand up. You can move to tentacle 10' away, but cannot attack)
Rose and Vauhwyt continue dry retching; Rose flat on the deck, and Vauhwyt still standing.
Theodore spits out a fireball that explodes prettily in the sky, singeing the body of the great octopus. The massive head shakes violently in pain. (Reflex 16, takes full 28 damage)
Sharif, seeing his friend disappear overboard, roars in rage, pushing himself up from the deck. He completely ignores the wind, but as he attempts to charge to his friend's aid, his feet go out from under him again. He tumbles back to the wood with a pathetic cry of helplessness.
Arngrim moves to the side of the ship, shouting profanity at the great beast, he gnashes the air with his teeth, and strikes out with his chain. The heavy rain proves too much, and his aim is poor.
Leo continues to dry heave, completely doubled over.
(OOC - It's very important that everyone make a Fortitude 15 check to move against the wind, and a Balance 15 check to keep your balance, or Balance 18 to move EACH ROUND. If you don't, I will make it for you.)

Theodore lets go of four magic missiles, each striking true at the bulging head bobbing in the water. (13 hp damage)
Dietrich struggles to stand and slips again.
Vauhwyt keeps her balance. (Made balance check at 15) Suddenly, she is now much larger.
Rose lies where she is, still recovering from her sickness.
Sharif stands again and draws a beautiful broad bladed sword. "I'm gonna skewer you!" he bellows. But as he tries to move forward, his feet slip a bit. He flings his hands out and manages to keep his balance.
Arngrim, at the side of the ship wails away with furor at the octopus' bulbous body. His first swing is hampered by a fierce wind. His second lands true, causing slight damage. (4 hp damage)

Dietrich is alliviated that the monster seems to be fleeing. He tries to go back to enter the ship, and again he holds against the wind, but slips (balance 4). It´s starting to annoy the warrior. Laying on the floor, he starts pulling himself on the rope towards the entrance to the lower decks.
Dietrich listens to his friends and can only hope Oni´s shark can rescue Thorir. Just to be safe, the knight repeat to his comrades:
"Grab some rope and tie yourselves to it before someone else falls into the sea!"

Vauhwyt lunges for the octopus, but the sea beast is gone before she can grab it.
Oni screams into the water for the shark to "save the man." Whether his voice can travel through the storm and into the water, and whether the shark could understand anyway, will never be known.
Several of you look over the rail of the ship, hoping that Thorir will resurface. You wait helplessly as nothing happens.
Finally, Captain Finnliath breaks the silence. "He's gone," he says sympathetically. "He's gone back ta the sea. A warrior's death. Naught ta be shamed of."
The storm still rages and Finnliath urges everyone below decks for the rest of the night. "We be makin' berth tamorrow. Ye'll be needin' yer sleep."
Vorelle Sunday October 15th, 2006 11:02:25 PM
Vorelle glares at the captain, and goes on scanning the waves. A warrior's death? She doubts it. Sliding farther and farther beneath the waves, your armor dragging you down, your lungs screaming for air, your struggles in vain... No. It's no way for anyone to die, let alone a warrior.
She keeps her vigil until it grows too dark to see, then, reluctantly, retires below.
Vauhwyt and Mookie Monday October 16th, 2006 9:15:19 AM
Mookie laughs. "A miss is as good as a mile, huh Boss? A mile down to Davey Jones Locker!"
Annoyed, Vauhwyt says, "Hush Mookie!" with less tolerance than usual.
She goes back to bed with unhappy thoughts in her mind.
Dietrich Monday October 16th, 2006 9:26:38 AM
Dietrich can´t believe the summoned shark wasn´t able to rescue Thorir. He´s upset they´ve lost the youth and makes a prayer for Domi and Gargul to receive his soul.
The captain is right that there´s no shame in his death, but it´s a terrible waste nevertheless. Without saying anything, Dietrich goes under deck. There, he asks his clerical friends to say some words to the remaining youths.

Will attend to anyone who is hurt by using his CLW wand. Then, like the others, I return to the hammock and try getting some sleep before the big day tomorrow.
Rose Monday October 16th, 2006 12:52:58 PM
Rose carefully goes back down stairs, sorry she couldnt be more of a help during the fight.
Piper also goes downstairs, but she'll scold her brother for his bad remarks and for not helping her.
Theodore & Macaw Monday October 16th, 2006 9:19:07 PM
Theodore stands against the storm as long as he can, then goes below decks with his head hung low. He moves to his cot and sits. Swallowing hard, he avoids the eyes of his friends as he gets out of his wet clothes.
Lieing on his cot, he stares at the ceiling for a couple of hours before finding sleep.
