DM Kathy Friday October 13th, 2006 1:14:33 AM
The funerals at last behind you, you begin thinking of your next adventure. A return to Koshe-Marr still tempts some, but it would appear that, at least for now, that road is closed to you.
Others continue to be concerned about the refugees, and there it seems you will have some news. Right after Gerdi's funueral, you receive word that Dulcet would like to meet with you.
You visit her in her home, where she ushers you into the parlor and serves tea and sandwiches.
"First," she says, "let me say how very sorry I am that my spell went awry and sent you to Koshe-Marr. I have had time to study the spell and the effect since it happened, and I believe it was a freak accident, something that will not occur again. Still, I cannot forget that mine was the hand that sent you there." She sighs and closes her eyes. "Those poor children."
She clears her throat. "But that is not why I called you here," she says. "I'm very pleased to say that the Pitchfork Council has made a decision regarding the refugees. Grynntym has been to the camp already to discuss it with them, and he reports that they are pleased with the solution." She smiles at you. "We're going to build a new town," she says.
"That is," she continues, "the refugees themselves will do most of the actual building. We are providing them with funds and building materials. Not enough to complete the entire project," she adds with a sigh, "but enough to get them started at any rate. Once they are established, and earning a living for themselves, they can perhaps complete the task. Of course, it will take time."
"But more than building materials," she goes on, "we would like to offer them some measure of protection while the first structures are being built. And that is where you come in. The Council would like to hire you to protect the refugees at the site of the new town, until the first few buildings have been established and everyone can put four solid walls and a roof between them and whatever may come their way."
"The new town is to be called Windtree, for it will be built where Windtree Creek crosses the road between Merrydale and Magpie Crossing. It is a good spot, with some light forest and plenty of open land for farming. And the creek itself, of course."
She looks around at all of you. "Will you undertake this task?"
Lorth Friday October 13th, 2006 7:50:30 AM
Lorth follows his friends to the meeting, he is still thinking about Koshe-mar and their unfinished business there, but for now it looks like they won't be returning. After Dulcet proposes her task he replies, "I certainly will accept this task, Madam Dulcet.", bowing. "Anything I can do to help the refugees would suit me fine."
Any Friday October 13th, 2006 10:15:15 AM
Any walks along with Harvest. As she mentions that she does not want to return to Koshe Mar, he nods,
"I know that some day, I will return there, if I can find a way. It is not vengeance that takes me there. That type of evil should not be allowed to exist, and if we can find our way there, the beings of that place may find a way here.
For now, I am content to be here with you, and to help the people of this Wold."
Later, he joins the others as Mistress Dulcet offers them a new task.
"Speaking only for myself, I would be happy to accept. It is a way to help those we have been trying to help already.
What do the rest of you think?"
He then listens to the response of the others.
Harvest Friday October 13th, 2006 11:11:09 AM
"Thank you, Davros Sapphiredge," Harvest had said accepting the wand that she had lent the mage in Koshe Marr. She had tucked it into the bag at her side as she listened to his words, words that had reflected the same bitterness she had felt, the same feelings of failure at the death of both Gerdi and Devrin.
"The Vampire Baelfred is destroyed," she had said drawing upon her knowledge of matters divine. "Or so I believe. It would have two hours to return to it's coffin, and I do not believe that it's coffin was so close at hand."
"But I am not certain." She recalls having sighed then. "There seems little certainty in life. And so we go where we may and help where we can."
Harvest returns from the memory of the day before, to the things of the here and now.
"That seems a good place, Madam Dulcet." Harvest Moon takes out her book of maps and folds it open upon her lap to the page where she has drawn their travels within Cinnamon Valley. With the tip of a finger, she reviews the blank area on her map where Windtree Creek might possibly cross the road between Merrydale and Magpie Crossing.
"We passed near there when we returned to Jarlwolf from Magpie Crossing," she says. "It is near Mount Glitterox."
"The Dread is far from there. And with the blessings of the Green Mage Grynntym there should be little to fear from the Culverwood. Is there something that you fear that the elves will need protection from, Madam Dulcet?"
Protection.
Another reminder of the violence that lurks around every bend along the path of life. As with Paladin Florin just the other day and his request to learn fighting with fists.
"It is a simple thing to harm another person by striking them with one's fist, Paladin Florin Jadenth," she had replied. "But it is much more valuable to be able to hold another without causing harm or to knock them to the ground where they are less likely to harm anyone else."
She takes his elbow gently and pulls it to her across his body.
"Do you see how this naturally causes your shoulder to lower and your body to turn? You now have less balance and there are many things that I might do with little strength to push, pull or force you to the ground. From there, it is easier for me to control you so that you do not cause harm to others."
"If you wish to learn more of these things, I would be glad to show you."
Davros Friday October 13th, 2006 5:09:54 PM
"I would be glad to help in any way that I can. Do you know if they need help with planning? I have received some schooling in architecture and engineering. I also have knowledge in other areas which may prove useful."
"I have not heard much as to why these refugees are here to begin with but the cause to help them is certainly just."
"Madam Dulcet, is there anything in particular that you feel we might need to complete this task?"
Florin Jadenth Friday October 13th, 2006 5:39:01 PM
Florin nods and speaks up, "I'll be glad to help out also. Maybe my armor smithing skills can be of some use too in this situation also. I would figure that some of the guard for the place will be volunteers also? If so with some metal I can work off and on to make some armor for the guards. This will also help me pass the time between guard duty."
Florin thinks and looks to Dulcet, "Some of our group would also be decent in helping with ideas of defenses for the place and such. It might be a good idea depending on how dangerous the area is, to have a safe building so to speak. I know I'm mainly looking at a tactical stand point but the Floating City I came from recently was attacked and if there would of been some place for the people to gather in cases of emergency, it might of helped save lives."
When Harvest is showing him the unarmed fighting moves he nods and smiles, "I would like any advice and training you could give me. I might not be trained in it but I'm willing to learn and should pickup quickly."
Arminas Friday October 13th, 2006 6:47:41 PM
Arminas explains to Davros:
"Parnoth is the evil green dragon that exerts power over those in the land to the south. He has commanded all elves to submit to wearing braclets that bind them to him as his slaves. The refugees are here because they have been forced to flee or submit. Mostly they are of elven descent."
At the meeting with Dulcet, Arminas is very pleasantly surprised by the annoucement.
"I feared that the refugees would be refused, and perhaps be forced back into Parnoth's dominion. This is good news indeed. I for one will do all in my power to help."
As his companions voice a desire to help also, Arminas becomes very happy.
"It is good that I have fallen in with such a good hearted group. Helping the elves who have been displaced by Parnoth's rule will bring much more good than going back to Koshe Marr. The greater good, I had heard paladins believed in such things. I now know it to be true."
When ideas about ways to help are brought out, Arminas simply adds:
"Remember Windtree will be an elven town, and so will be very little like the towns you have known. A council of the elders will most likely plan the town."
Bralin Sunday October 15th, 2006 9:38:52 PM
At Dulcet's home, Bralin reverts to form. The dwarf remains silent throughout. When Any asks their opinions of the offered quest, he nods and simply states, "Aye".
DM Kathy Sunday October 15th, 2006 11:09:59 PM
Dulcet nods intelligently at Harvest's question. "We do not fear reprisals from the elves," she says, "but there are wild beasts living in the forst and surrounding area. And we do not yet know the long-term effects of the Fae King's influence on the creatures of the land. Until the settlers have a few buildings to shelter them, they would be vulnerable."
To Florin, she says, "I know the elders of the group would be interested to hear anything you would have to say. The final decision would be theirs, of course, but I doubt they would turn a deaf ear to the voice of experience."
She smiles when you agree to help. "Wonderful," she says. "I was hoping we could count on you. The refugees have begun packing their things, and will probably require most of the day tomorrow to finish their preparations. Accordingly, they will leave for the new site on the day after tomorrow. We would like you to accompany them, in case they run into trouble on their journey.
"In the meantime," she concludes, "you can do as you like. I know they would appreciate help with their preparations, but perhaps you have preparations of your own to make. I shall leave you to them."
Lorth Monday October 16th, 2006 7:44:04 AM
Lorth listens to what Dulcet has to say, when she is done he returns to the inn, to relax for a while. He will be ready to go as soon as they decide to leave.
Any d20+9=25 Monday October 16th, 2006 9:48:20 AM
Any listens as Dulcet completes her briefing on the situation. Harvest's question is astute. Any wwas wondering the same thing. The group seems a litle overkill for a few forest animals, and he wonders if there is some threat that the council is particularly worried about that they are not speaking of. He thanks Dulcet and leaves with the others, returning to the Inn.
Upon arriving there, he again checks on the horses, telling Moonshadow that they will be leaving soon. He checks over his gear to see if there is anything else that he might need. Perhaps he will go do a little shopping this afternoon, and see if anything strikes him. He invites Harvest, asking if she needs anything.
Among the other things he knows he will need, he remembers to add a little corn and oats for Moonshadow. Although he can graze, Any likes to have a little extra for his friend.

Harvest Monday October 16th, 2006 10:08:18 AM
"It is nice to again be traveling with you, Paladin Florin Jadenth, Davros Sapphiredge." Harvest Moon inclines her head to each in turn. The smile upon her face speaks as much to the point as do her words.
Indeed the excitement within Harvest Moon extends beyond her words. It lightens her step and brings a sweep to her skirt. Her hands move about with animation, lifting occasionally to push her crest of hair back from where it invariably falls over one eye.
"Perhaps we should speak to the leaders in the camp, Anthos," she suggests. "To learn of how they plan to organize the move? How they plan to travel and how they plan to proceed once we arrive at the settlement site."
Arminas Monday October 16th, 2006 11:30:01 AM
Arminas also desires to speak to the elders of the camp.
"Perhaps we should offer to check out the area of Windtree, and see what creatures are about. I could let the word out that we come in peace, and that the animals can co-exist with the elves. I have found that if an understanding can be reached, that most problems solve themselves."
If any are willing, Arminas will go with them to the refugee camp and offer his services. Otherwise, he goes alone.

Don't know exactly what I can do in helping to build a town but if the rest of you are going, i'm going too.
After returning to the tavern/inn and having a quick meal and a drink, I gather all my belongings, and wait downstairs until everyone is ready to depart. Then I walk with Davros.
Davros Monday October 16th, 2006 6:40:12 PM
"Harvest, I must say thank you for inviting me along. I admit it feels good to help people especially those who have been downtrodden by evil. Perhaps we can put some distance between Koshe-Marr and ourselves both by travelling and in our minds."
"Arminas, thanks for answering my plentiful questions." Davros rummages through his spellbook. "Nope, sorry Arminas no dragon slaying spells in here" he says smiling. "I guess we will just have to help the elves instead."
"Fosco, I need to finish writing a few scrolls but I will meet you at the inn for a few drinks later."
Florin Jadenth Monday October 16th, 2006 7:37:24 PM
Florin nods and stands ready to go and get ready, all though his gear is already ready to go, even the extra purchases at the CC he made recently (Kathy, you get my Catacombs transaction?)
Florin smiles and looks to Harvest, "I'm glad you enjoy our company and mine Miss Harvest and it is nice to be of help. I was hoping maybe before we head out the group might like to get together for a meal as a group maybe. Will be the first time all of us currently sat at a table and had a meal. Is up to the others of course."
Florin will see if anyone wants to go with him to help the refugees pack anything though before heading to the Inn to get some food and drink, offering to meet the other members for supper.
DM Kathy Monday October 16th, 2006 11:05:23 PM
In speaking with Dulcet, Any senses no hidden motivation. Indeed, the Fae King had some remarkable effects on natural creatures, and the heroes of the Wold opted to allow him to remain active. There's no telling what the long-term effects will be.
Fosco, Lorth, and Davros make their preparations and pack their belongings. You overhear a bit of talk about the new town, not all of it positive.
"I don't see why we should buy new houses for a lot of pointy-eared traitors," grouses one fellow at the inn.
"The Council should buy me a new house; the elves can have my old one," puts in a woman with a little laugh.
For the most part, though, the townsfolk of Jarlwolf are inclined to be charitable toward the refugees. Some are excited at the prospect of another trading partner in the Valley, although that, of course, will be years off.
Harvest and Arminas express a wish to visit the camp, and Florin agrees to accompany them. You have a pleasant jaunt out of town under open blue skies. You reach the refugee camp and find it a hive of activity. Tents are being taken down and packed, personal belongings are being sorted into piles, and such wagons and carts as people have are being checked over for the journey. Excited by all the activity, children chase each other around the bundles and boxes. There are fewer of them than there would be for the same-sized group of humans or halflings, for the elves live long lives and have correspondingly few children.
Over to one side of the camp, you spot Grynntym, deep in conversation with an elf woman in well-worn leather armor.
Lorth Tuesday October 17th, 2006 8:37:02 AM
Lorth tries to help the refugees with taking down their tents and packing crates and such. He moves around the area offering his assistance wherever it looks like it is needed. After everything is ready to move, Lorth will summon Tobiasz and ride along with the caravan.
Any d20+7=15 Tuesday October 17th, 2006 10:02:33 AM
Walking out to the refugee camp, Any can feel the excitement in the air. This is just what these people needed to give their lives direction.
He then sees the Elvish woman in armor, and with a gentle tug on her arm, directs Harvest that way. He would like to speak to this woman. When close enough, and after they have seen the group coming, Any introduces each member of their band present.
"May we have the pleasure of knowing who you are, and how we may help?"
He then calmly waits for her introduction.

Harvest Tuesday October 17th, 2006 11:34:45 AM
"Greetings Green Mage Grynntym." Tagging along next to Anthos, Harvest Moon hails the wizard of the Culverwood. "Hello. I am Harvest Moon," she introduces herself to the she-elf in the leather armor.
Quietly, she listens as Anthos discusses the needs of the traveling party. Only when the discussion seems at an end, does she interject with one of her own.
"Mistress Dulcet has asked that we act as guards, among other things, to protect your people against attack by wild animals and other dangers that may present themselves. If you have guards of your own, it may be best to introduce ourselves to them now and speak of their duties and needs so as to avoid the chance that we might get in their way."
Arminas Tuesday October 17th, 2006 12:20:01 PM
Arminas walks up to Grynntym and bows.
"Greetings, much has happened since we came across you in the Culverwood. I hope that Thadius and Thalpius have tamed a bit. Harvest here was very upset with their actions last we met. I am sure you have heard we were taken as slaves by Parnoth's minions. We barely escaped, and the situation remains grave in those lands."
Arminas then shakes off his sullen look, and smiles:
"Yet there is much left for hope. Windtree will be a wonderful place for these elves to make a home. We have come to offer our services."
Looking to the woman elf in armor, Arminas makes another bow:
"I am Arminas Calaelen, ranger at your service."
Fosco Tuesday October 17th, 2006 1:00:05 PM
After packing I go downstairs, order a meal and after that, drinks while waiting on Davros.
Harvest (2nd llegal Post) Tuesday October 17th, 2006 1:14:44 PM
Harvest Moon flushes a gentle pink at the words of Arminas Calaelen. "It is wrong to force sexual congress upon a woman," she says with quiet intensity. "Upon any being. One day Thadius and Thalpius will understand this and they will repent their misdeeds."
Davros Tuesday October 17th, 2006 3:34:37 PM
Davros joins Fosco downstairs after he finishes another scroll. As he sits down at the table, he orders a meal and gives Whiskers a scrap of food.
"Fosco, I see you have started without me. Let me buy the next round. I believe I owe you at least a few drinks for getting us through all those traps at that mine in Koshe-Marr. So do you think anyone else will be joining us?"
Bralin Tuesday October 17th, 2006 4:04:50 PM
Bralin accompanies his companions to the refugee camp, riding upon his light warhorse, Granite.
Arriving there, the dwarf trails along behind Any, Arminas, and Harvest, and listens with mild interest to the discussion.
Florin Jadenth Tuesday October 17th, 2006 7:59:19 PM
Florin will help out with the refugees, however he can anyway. He packs and helps take down tents and such also.
Once Florin has helped out as much as he can he will see about when the group is moving out and if not to soon he will get something to eat and some rest.
Before Florin leaves as in to guard the refugees, Florin will do his best to find Ivy and speak to her. Telling her of his new job and how he hopes to see her again when he comes back through or if she ever comes to the new town to visit.
Fosco Tuesday October 17th, 2006 10:56:18 PM
Im sure everyone will be joining us. Just not here at this table. I am sure some are already gone off.
DM Kathy Tuesday October 17th, 2006 11:56:26 PM
In the refugee camp, Grynntym turns and smiles as the adventurers approach. "Well met!" he says with a slight smile. "I take it you have agreed to the Council's proposal?"
He gestures to the elf woman in leather armor. "Allow me to acquaint you with Tahlela, one of the elders of the group. Tahlela, here are Anthos, Arminas, Bralin, and Harvest." He gestures. "And Lorth is hard at work already." He turns to Florin. "But this young man is new to the group, I think." He gives his name and gets Florin's in return.
"Hello," says Tahlela. "It's good to meet you. I have heard tales of your deeds, and I feel better knowing you will be on hand."
Grynntym excuses himself, and leaves the camp bound for business of his own. Tahlela explains that she is in charge of the group's hunters, a small number of elves skilled in archery and woodcraft. "We can assist with defense as well," she adds. "Although we have little experience with actual combat."
She takes those of you who are interested around and introduces you to her hunters. There are a dozen of them all told, men and women both, armed with bows, wearing leather armor or none at all.
At day's end, you make your way back to town (the refugees will leave in the morning). Florin, with some perserverence, is able to locate Ivy and say his good-byes.
"I'll miss you," she whispers, eyes shyly downcast. Then, with a mischievous glint in her eye, she reaches up and unties her red hair-ribbon. "Perhaps you will bear my favor with you," she says, "like the knights in the tales." Mischief still sparkling in her eyes, she ties the ribbon about Florin's upper arm. "There! Do heroic deeds, and think of me." With a last smile, she departs.
In the inn, Fosco and Davros meet for a convivial meal.
Lorth Wednesday October 18th, 2006 7:47:03 AM
Since they will not be leaving till the morning, Lorth helps pack for the rest of the day, then goes to the inn to have supper with Fosco and Davros. He greets them warmly saying, "So my new found friends, where do you both hail from originally?"
Any Wednesday October 18th, 2006 8:47:25 AM
Having met the elven hunters, Any sets to in helping the refugees prepare for the trip. He helps some pack, others with their animals, and organizes a group of the children into a line to move boxes and bags into some of the carts.
At the end of the day, he returns to the Inn, and seeing other members of the party there eating, sits and joins them.
"Well met my friends."
He holds a chair for Harvest, allowing her to sit first.
"This should be an interesting trip, I only hope it doesn't get too interesting."
Bralin Wednesday October 18th, 2006 9:34:49 AM
The dwarf dutifully shakes hands with the elven hunters, noting their weapons and armor. Like Arminas, they appear fully capable of defending at range. Only if the refugees meet an enemy determined to close will his own abilities be required, an unlikely scenario.
Bralin returns to the inn, and prepares his armor, axe, and hammer for the next day. Tis likely to be a quiet quest. He nods to himself - a fitting respite after Koshe-Marr.
Arminas Wednesday October 18th, 2006 10:56:41 AM
Arminas' mention of the saytrs has visibly upset Harvest.
"I am sorry to have mentioned them, but wanted to be sure they were causing no further harm. Forgive me."
Turning to the elven hunter, Arminas says:
"Tahlela, it is a pleasure to meet you. You and your hunters will do well protecting your people. However, if you need help we will be here to assist."
Arminas gives a short whistle, and soon a great eagle drops from the sky to land upon Arminas' shoulder.
"I would like you to meet Ewan. She is a good friend and excellent scout. We can send her to watch from above and give advance warning if danger lurks in the forest."
Arminas then sends Ewan into the sky, conveying to her:
Watch for danger, alert me.
Arminas goes and meets each of the hunters, commenting on the craftmanship of the bows and arrows they carry.
Fosco Wednesday October 18th, 2006 11:31:02 AM
Orders a sniffer of brandi. The good stuff you keep under the counter, not in plain view please.
Slowly sips it in a chair next to the fire hearth.
Nods a hello when Lorth arrives.
I am from the big float, but was indisposed when it disappeared. Not that I had any family left to go back to. Don't ask, long story, aint gonna tell it.
After a few seconds I go back to looking at the brandi swirling in the sniffer, longingly this time.
Harvest Wednesday October 18th, 2006 4:12:34 PM
Harvest shakes her head, negating the need for apologies. "Thank you, Arminas Calaelen. Thadius and Thalpius appear good of heart, and they will one day understand."
The rest of the day is spent in joyful labor, helping the elves, speaking with them about what they would like their new life to be like, and playing with the children. The children chatter excitedly about exploring new woods. The older ones want their own rooms in houses not yet built.
Harvest seats herself at the chair Anthos draws from the table for her. She turns a smile over her shoulder for the gallant gesture. The smile turns to the rest of her companions as she meets their eyes over the table. She nods as well at Fosco Loamsdown when she comes to him. But her eyes drop quickly away. She says little for the rest of the meal.
Florin Jadenth Wednesday October 18th, 2006 7:17:27 PM
Florin smiles and nods at the ribbon offered him and decides to do one more romantic thing and tries to kiss Ivy's cheek before she leaves.
Florin walks back to the Inn to meet with the others and sits down and nods to Fosco, "Mind alittle company?" Florin also greets all others that showup to eat and get a drink. During the meal he keeps his ears open for anything out of the ordinary and will get some rest before the morning comes and guard duty comes.
Davros Wednesday October 18th, 2006 7:35:01 PM
"Good evening everyone. To answer your question Lorth: I can't say exactly where my home is. I left the farm where I was born and raised when I was eight years old to begin my schooling. A man came looking for apprentices and, among others he found me. Between the time that has passed and the miles I have traveled, I couldn't say where the farm is anymore."
DM Kathy Wednesday October 18th, 2006 11:53:57 PM
Tahlela is delighted to meet Ewan, and the group departs the refugee camp with thanks and well wishes.
Back in town, the group who went to the camp are reunited with Davros and Fosco. A convivial evening is had by all. Some of you may have noticed that Davros hasn't been around much. He's spent a lot of time in his room at the inn, hard at work on something.
The next day dawns fair and warm, promising to get even warmer by day's end. You make your way back to the refugee camp, in time to help the group as they start out.
When you arrive, you are introduced to the two other elders of the group. Firon is a slight, white-haired elf man whose green eyes are still keen and knowning. He is in charge of planning and building the new town. Sivaine is an aged elf woman with deep lines on her face and the beginnings of milky clouds in her eyes. Her wrinkled hands are still strong, though, and there is a deep wisdom in her face along with the deep lines. She is in charge of the group who will be clearing and planting fields.
The refugees move slowly, as you might have expected, for their pace must accomodate the very young, the very old, and laden animals. It is very likely you will need to camp somewhere on the road and reach the town site tomorrow.
Lorth Thursday October 19th, 2006 7:35:50 AM
Lorth follows along with the caravan, helping throughout the day wherever he is needed. He allows people to take turns riding Tobiasz if they are walking while he walks beside them. At some point during the day Lorth approaches Fosco, "Last night you said you where from the big float, I'm not familiar with that place, what is it?"

Arminas greets Firon and Sivaine:
"It is good to see that the young elves have Elders along to help them start a new life. In many of my travels I have seen elves that have forgotten the sylvan way and have lost their culture in the cities of humans."
Turning to Tahlela Arminas adds:
"With your permission I would like to move ahead of the group to scout the way. Ewan will help me from above. Others with scouting skills are welcome to join me."
Arminas then mentions to Bralin and the rest of the group.
"I will move ahead to scout. Perhaps Harvest and Any could travel with me. We should be within shouting distance if we encounter danger, though I think it to be unlikely."
Bralin Thursday October 19th, 2006 11:28:01 AM
With the morning, Bralin makes his prayers to the gods via his Orb, and then rides out upon Granite to meet with the refugees.
His nods a greeting to Firon and Sivaine. The two Elders have mettle, an encouraging sign.
Arminas' idea has merit, and the dwarf nods again in agreement. "A sound plan," he states. "I will ride the line."
Bralin will ride up and down the length of the refugees, taking special note of those in the back, and making sure they are still there each time he returns. Granite is irreplaceable for this task. The warrior mentally kicks himself for not purchasing a mount years ago.
Harvest d20+14=18 d20+14=27 Thursday October 19th, 2006 12:43:25 PM
Setting out in the morning from the stables with Anthos, Moonshadow and Fyrda, Harvest Moon dismounts at the refugee camp and walks to let the old horse follow along with the group unburdened. It is good to walk the road with one's own feet at any rate. The feeling is wholesome and honest.
"Peace be with you," she greets the two Elders of the elf community. "I have prayed to Alemi for an uneventful journey this day," she says. "Though prayer," she smiles, "is always best fortified with vigilance and care."
She walks the road at the head of the group with Anthos as Arminas Calaelen scouts ahead.

Any Thursday October 19th, 2006 6:33:12 PM
After some good natured jostling for position, the group finally gets underway. Any splits his time riding point with Arminas, and walking with Harvest, resting Moonshadow.
It is actually a pleasant journey. The day is bright and clear, no troubles show themselves, and as he walks, he visits with the elven people around. He never has known many of his father's race--just enough to learn the language--so this entire adventure is a learning time for him. His mother never blamed his father for not being around, he did not even know of Anthos' existence, but it left Any with only half a heritage--one he barely understands. This trip might change some of that.
Towards afternoon, he asks Arminas to look for a camp area large enough for this group, and then helps in establishing that camp. Turning to Bralin he says,
"Let us set watches for the night. The elven hunters might share in this, then none will have to lose much sleep. One of our group with one of them for 2 hour watches. What do you think?"
Davros Thursday October 19th, 2006 7:11:39 PM
In the morning, Davros dresses in his traveling clothing, packing away his fine garments in his new backpack. He carefully places all of his gear in neat order upon himself each item positioned for maximum efficiency if needed quickly. Having fed Whiskers and eaten a light meal he joins the others at the departure site as the group leaves.
Once on the road Davros asks Bralin if there is any particular place he would like the wizard to travel, either for observation or defense. When his place is established, Davros begins to ask polite questions of the elders and magic users about their culture, lore and especially their magic. He does not press in an arrogant manner but presents himself as a genuine student for anything they care to teach.

Florin also calls Ajax and rides him, moving close to one of the elders as he does and speaks to one of them in hopes of learning more of things, "I'm sorry for bothering you but I was hoping maybe you can tell me more of elven life. You see, I was a human but a artifact changed me into a elf so I been interested in learning more of the elven life and ways."
Florin keeps his eyes and ears open also as they travel, hoping nothing happens.

As they begin their journey, the mood of the refugees is cautiously optimistic. They know they have a lot of work ahead of them, but they are glad they will have a place to belong. And who couldn't be optimistic under warm, cloudless skies?
Lorth and Tobiasz find many grateful passengers throughout the day: children, young mothers, the elderly, the lightly injured. The truly infirm are riding in carts or wagons, but there are plenty who are grateful of an hour's rest without slowing down the group.
Arminas is readily given leave to scout ahead, with Ewan aloft. Even staying on guard, the two friends have a pleasant stroll. The weather is perfect, the landscape pleasing to the eye. Every now and again, Arminas feels a faint jolt of excitement in some corner of his brain, letting him know that Ewan has spotted a rabbit.
Bralin and Granite ride up and down along the line, the dwarf's short legs sticking almost straight out in their stirrups. A few of the elves seem inclined to poke gentle fun at the sight of the stout dwarf a-horseback, but most seem grateful for his vigilance.
Harvest goes on foot, leading Fyrda behind her. The elders smile at her. "Indeed, both prayers and vigilance will be needed for our venture," Sivaine replies. "But the people have such hope--I think the gods must be smiling on us."
Any spends some time talking to the elves and learning more about their ways. He learns that this group of refugees consists mainly of three hugely extended families, or clans, plus a few assorted elves from other clans who fled along with them. In turn, they ask him about his father.
Davros manages to find the one wizard in the group, and is soon exchanging notes on magical theory. Zaryla has had no formal schooling, but picked up most of her knowledge from someone she calls Avara. She shows him her spellbook, wherein she scribed her first spell when she was still a child. "Read Magic, it was," she says in a charmingly-accented voice. "For Avara insisted that I learn the basics first."
Florin likewise finds elves who are pleased to speak with him about their ways. "We go now to build our town of Wind-Tree," one woman tells him with a smile. "When we first heard we were to have a town, we thought to name it ourselves. We were going to call it Nuaithar, which means "Hope" in our tongue. Then we learned that our hosts had already named it." She laughs a little.
"I think we should use both names," another woman says. "We should call it Nuaithar-Windtree."
"The humans will never take the time to pronounce such a name," a man says with a smile.
"Oh, the humans," the second woman says dismissively. "Well, they can call it Windtree, if they're in such a rush." The others laugh. Spirits are definitely high.
You camp that evening under the stars. Most of the elves do not bother with tents, as it is a warm evening with little chance of dew in the morning. They arrange themselves for trance as suits each individual, some curling up on the ground, others sitting up.
You maintain your watches, but the night passes uneventfully.
Any Friday October 20th, 2006 8:44:01 AM
Any responds to questions about his father with a shrug of his shoulders.
"All my mother ever told me about my father was that he was a High Elf, of at least some royal blood. She was a courtier to the human king's court at the time they met. There was a dalliance, and I am the result. My father never knew of me, and my mother kept it that way. She left the king's court in disgrace, and we joined a traveling Troupe to survive, so here I am."
Any continues to visit with the elves off and on as they travel, but more often than not, he is content to simply walk along with Harvest at his side, with the occasional ride to the front checking with Arminas.

After morning prayer, Harvest Moon walks amongst the elves and her companions as they break the morning fast. She stands in stillness under the cover of a small tree. Her mouth is formed into a small moue of concern. Then she emerges into the morning light approaching Anthos to drape her arms about his neck from behind as he sits with the morning's repast.
"Is all well with you, My Love?" She holds him, resting her head at the juncture between his shoulder and neck. "Nothing troubles you?" Harvest Moon whispers into the shell of his ear.
Davros Friday October 20th, 2006 10:49:08 PM
Davros spends the evening in Zaryla's company as long as the elves do not find it inappropriate.
"Avara was very wise Zaryla, Davros says to her in her native tongue. I believe I learned Read Magic when I was about eight or nine years old. Would you like to learn a new spell? I would be very pleased to teach it to you." Whiskers rolls his little eyes and snuggles into a fold in Davros' cloak for the night as Davros hopes his elvish isn't too rusty.

Funny how they seem to need each other so much.
Stroking Ewans feathers Arminas looks for ticks as Ewan does the same in Arminas' hair.
As the camp rises, Arminas is pleased but not surprised that there has been no problems during the night. Forest creatures rarely attack a single person, and are not know to attack large groups. Turning to Bralin, he says:
"I will scout again today as before."
Arminas then eats a light breakfast, and then heads out to the front of the group. Ewan flies high above, and after catching and eating a rabbit she resumes her scouting.

There are head-shakes and tsk-ing at Any's story. "Such a shame, that you are not known to your clan," one of the elves says. "You would surely do them proud."
"You could go to a sage," another suggests. "Perhaps some research would uncover the identity of your father and his clan."
Zaryla laughs a little. "She was my Avala, Davros, not yours," she says teasingly. Belatedly, you remember that Avala is Elvish for grandmother. However, Zaryla would be interested in learning one of your spells, and offers her own spellbook to copy in return.
The night is uneventful, and the refugees are ready to move on again early in the morning. Earlier, perhaps, than some of you--there are advantages to needing only four hours of trance at night.
The refugees are again grateful for Lorth's aid, and for Bralin's and Arminas's vigilance.
Late on the second day, you reach the proposed site of the new town. It is a pleasing location. The river here flows swiftly over shallows, making a musical gurgling on rocks and small boulders. Almost, you could ford here, but the road has a good wooden bridge. On the other side of the river, gently rolling hills seem made for growing crops. There are light stands of trees, thickening here and there into groves, which the elven elders look at with approval.
A camp is set up, and the elders begin walking about the area, discussing and debating how best to situate the new town.

"I have heard a legend of a magical instrument which can build constructs, but lacking such I am afraid this will take some time and effort."
He follows along behind the village elders, listening to what they have to say. He is interested in the elvish pattern for building a settlement. It will be interesting to participate in such a thing.
He approaches Bralin,
"A warrior's viewpoint, and a dwarf's ideas would I'm sure be welcomed. Perhaps we can look together at what this site has to offer, and suggest ways to modify the elvish plans, to make this village more defensible. What do you say?"

Arminas enjoys the relative boredom of guarding a large group in a friendly land. The site looks excellent.
Yet, something seems to always happen to sour his mood, this time the dwarf suggests living underground.
"While I know it is possible to be alive underground, you could hardly call it living! Really."
Arminas then turns away from the dwarf to find a much more reasonable suggestion from Harvest. She suggests checking out the hilltops, and Arminas readily agrees.
"I would love to have a better look at this land."
Arminas looks up at Ewan flying high above.
"I wish I could fly like my friend, yet a pleasant stroll in the woods is almost as nice. I will look for tracks as we are about, to see what creatures live in the area. Mostly it will be good information to know the type of game and its abundance. Elves require such knowledge, so as to not offset the balance."
Davros Monday October 23rd, 2006 5:21:48 PM
"My apologies Zaryla" Davros says in elvish while laughing. Perhaps you could give me a refresher course in elven while we exchange a few spells."
"Could you introduce me to the elders today? I would like to offer my engineering knowledge to the planners. I intend to make myself as useful to them as possible. I also need to check with my companions to see if they need any help with scouting or watches."
Upon finding everyone, Davros asks if he can be of any help with any ongoing projects.
DM Kathy Monday October 23rd, 2006 11:29:15 PM
You and the elves walk and explore and climb and survey and plan. The gently rolling hills extend all along this side of the river, sometimes lightly forested, sometimes open grasslands.
Just upstream from the proposed town site, you find a spot where the river widens into a large, still pool.
"Fish live here," says Tahlela, nodding with satisfaction. "This will be a tremendous help until our fields are able to feed us."
By nightfall, no decisions have been made, but the elves, as is typical for their race, don't seem to be in any kind of hurry. Over a convivial dinner, they discuss various places to put the principal buildings of the town.
"We can begin some of the buildings tomorrow," Firon says, "and continue with others as we make decisions." His eyes twinkle. "I know there are some who would discuss the possibilities for a year or more, but we cannot ask these good folk to protect us for so long. Tomorrow, we begin."
Lorth Tuesday October 24th, 2006 8:01:35 AM
Lorth enjoys his dinner with the elven folk, he is happy to hear they will start building tommorow.
He decides that since he doesn't know much about designing and building he will help with all the manual labor after taking direction from whoever is in charge.
Any Tuesday October 24th, 2006 8:47:18 AM
Any walks with the village elders as they make their plans for their new city. The approach they use is much different than humans, and Any is intrigued at their thought processes, it shows him much on the elven way of seeing the Wold.
Dinner is served at the end of the day, and Any and the others join the elves at table.
Afterwards, Any seeks out Harvest,
"How was your day exploring my Lady? Did you add to your knowledge of the country?"
He then settles comfortably to listen to the wonders that Harvest sees in the Wold. She is much like the elves in that respect, seeing what others do not always see, because they take it all for granted.
Harvest Tuesday October 24th, 2006 3:48:55 PM
"It is very beautiful country, Anthos." Harvest eats slowly, savoring each mouthful of food, giving it its due before taking more. "And it appears very peaceful. We encountered no dangerous animals at all. Though that may have been Arminas Calaelen's doing."
"Did you steer us away from all of the dangerous animals, Arminas Calaelen?" she asks, the smile upon her face speaking to the humorous nature of her question.
Fosco (Sub/Al) Tuesday October 24th, 2006 3:54:40 PM
"We can begin supplementing your diet with fish starting tomorrow." I smile and hold up a stick that I've been making into a fishing pole. "If anyone else wants to come along, I can guard at the same time that we fish."
Arminas Tuesday October 24th, 2006 4:14:15 PM
Arminas laughs at Harvest's words:
"No, I have instead traveled with the dangerous animals, and brought them to this peaceful place. The more I travel the more I wish that we were all like the forest creatures."
Then a look of sorrow starts to develop upon his face.
"To kill only for the need to eat, and to coexist with others. Someday I wish the same for the 'civilized people', though I have come to believe my wish is in vain. Once I thought all elves believed as I, but recently I have come to realize that human frailties are not limited to humans alone."
Looking about, Arminas adds:
"Forgive me, I do not mean to trouble you with my sorrows. Perhaps a bit of elven song and dance will help. Any, if you care to play I am sure the elves will join in song."
Davros Tuesday October 24th, 2006 8:54:43 PM
After spending the morning trading spells with Zaryla, Davros inspects the area where the town will be. He spends a few moments trying to memorize the location so that years from now he will be able to remember what it looked like before the town existed here. He joins in with the evening meal with the others and with the elves and enjoys the time he is spending here with them.

"Unless someone has a lute that I can borrow, I cannot meet your wish friend Arminas. I can produce a lute for a few minutes, as I did for the funeral, but it will not last for long. I will at least do that much for you though, and play you a song to get the evening started. Then if another lute may be found, I will continue."
So saying, Any sings a soft tune, and with a motion of his hands, a lute appears at his feet. He picks it up and begins to play a bright elvish tune, one from their celebration of new birth. Hopefully the elves will find it a fitting tune for the birth of a new city.
Arminas Illegal second post Tuesday October 24th, 2006 10:49:11 PM
"Thank you friend Anthos, your song does indeed brighten the heart. Perhaps we should pitch in and buy you a lute. I always thought you had your own, not a magical construct."
Hmmm, a bard with no instrument. Arminas thinks back when his bow was snapped by Parnoth's spawn, and shudders.
Harvest (2nd Illegal Post) Tuesday October 24th, 2006 11:41:30 PM "His lute was broken," Harvest whispers to Arminas. "Crushed by the man in the bar."
Still, instrument or not, Anthos is who he is, as no objects or possessions can define a person.
Harvest claps in time to the music, swaying in her seat.
DM Kathy Wednesday October 25th, 2006 12:44:09 AM
That evening, Any makes music for as long as his summoned instrument lasts. The elves are appreciative, and one of them pulls out a lap harp to keep the music going after Any's performance. It is a very pleasant evening, sharing music in the warm night under the stars.
The next morning, the elves begin the hard work of making a new town. Sivaine leads a group to a hollow between two hills, to begin laying out the fields that will help feed the new town. Tahlala takes a small group out to scout the game trails. Other groups undertake to watch the children, and to tidy up the campsite for the day.
The largest group, though, goes with Firon to begin construction. A large, spreading oak tree is chosen for the first building. A group of elf builders scramble up into the tree and begin putting up a platform, while others on the ground hand boards and materials up to them. The work is slow, for the shape of the platform is determined by the shape of the tree. There is a great deal of fitting and planing and smoothing.
"This will be a fine dwelling," Firon remarks, watching them work. "Not, alas, for a large family. Trees outside the Culverwood are not big enough for our larger families. Still, it will be a fine dwelling."
The elves don't assign you to any particular task, seeming to take it for granted that, like them, you will just be drawn to whichever task appeals most to you. Tahlela does mention to Arminas, though, that someone in your group should be on watch, since you are in charge of protection.
Lorth Wednesday October 25th, 2006 8:00:30 AM
Lorth helps hand boards up into the tree for as long as he is needed. He will go on watch if asked by his friends.
Any Wednesday October 25th, 2006 8:49:04 AM
Any takes the first hours of watch in the morning, splitting his time between circling the camp, and watching as the first construction begins in the old oak. He never stays too long in any particular place, but spends time searching out and learning the area immediately around the infant town. He finds all the hidden approaches where an enemy might come upon the town unobserved. He looks for defensible positions for any who might be caught outside of the town to use as they retreat back to safety, and looks for ways to improve these areas without an opponent being able to turn them against the town.
Working carefully, and with the consent of the elder elves, he suggests transplanting some of the smaller undergrowth to clear lanes of approach and retreat, never in a direct line, but always to take advantage of the cover available. Anyone following this path now would be visible from the town, but protected from pursuers.
Of course not every approach lends itself to this work. On the side where the town opens on to the meadow, other precautions will need to be taken. And in all of this, of course the elves will have the final say, Any can only suggest things that seem to make sense to him.
When his shift at guard ends, he moves to help as best he can in assisting the construction.
At the end of the long day, he sits at supper with Harvest, and discusses all that he has seen an done that day, and listens in turn to what she has been up to. He arranges with the others the night watch, and will take his turn when it comes.

The morning comes soon enough after an evening spent drawing by the light of an Everburning torch. Mornings had always been the time to spring from the bedroll into the fresh crispness of the newly freshened air. Now, however, the comfort and warm at Anthos' side affords competition for the early morning moments.
Stolen moments later, Harvest rises to Alemi's light, and after prayer, strikes off in the direction opposite from which she had taken the day before. It is a simple matter to follow the course of Windtree Creek to where it meets Magpie Lake. This way is on many charts. It is well known, and this trip is more an indulgence than anything else. As such, though, it is quick, and allows Harvest to return early and stand sentry over the camp in the afternoon.
"Magpie Lake was so big, Anthos." A look of marvel paints her face as she holds her hands out to describe it. "So large and flat that I could see all the way, I think, to the farthest shore. How big the sky would be beneath that."

"If we are the primary guardians, then I suggest we set up a 24 hour watch schedule in teams of two. I feel that any other help we offer is extra and that we might otherwise even be in the way."
DM Kathy Thursday October 26th, 2006 12:45:10 AM
For the rest of that day, and over the next several days, you fall into a comfortable pattern. Some of you are always on watch, of course, because that is your responsibility, but when you aren't on watch you have plenty of times to speak to the elves and watch the town being built.
The next few houses after the first are also built up in trees. Because the area is but lightly forested, this means they are rather far apart from one another--which doesn't seem to bother the elves much at all.
Watching them clear and plant fields is also interesting. The elves do not create squared-off fields with straight rows as humans and halflings do. Instead, their fields follow the contours of the land, with crops planted in a patchwork fashion that more closely resembles natural growth. Sivaine explains to you that it is too late to plant most crops, but there are some vegetables that can be harvested well into the winter. Next year, she says, they will plant more fields with a greater variety of crops.
The elves are intrigued by Any's suggestions, and a small group of Sivaine's farmers is tasked with selecting and marking trees and bushes for transplant.
"Summer is a poor season for transplanting," Sivaine explains. "So we will leave them for now and move them in the autumn. It is an excellent suggestion, though, young one."
You also have ample time to explore the area. Harvest maps it thoroughly. You find various "treasures" in the surruonding area, including a thicket of sweet, juicy blackberries, a patch of pungent mint, a rabbit colony (Ewan's favorite), and a small pond.
Nights are relaxing and enjoyable, as everyone shares food, stories of the day, and a little music. With the long hours of daylight and the fact that the elves only need four hours of trance, it's sometimes hard for the humans to get eight full hours of sleep. There always seems to be something happening in camp, and it seems such a shame to be missing out.

Any continues on his day to day routine of guard duty, and helping the elves build the town. He even seems to fit in better and better with the elves, as he seems to be sleeping no more than they do, but always looks refreshed and ready for the day.
Each day is another learning opportunity for him, and a chance to see how the elves live. It also a pleasant experience to spend down time with Harvest, listening to her discoveries, and the things that catch her eye.
Every member of the little band seems to be relaxed and settled amongst the elves, but perhaps not Bralin--its hard to tell with him. All in all, this has been an easy assignment thus far.
Bralin d20+13=21 Thursday October 26th, 2006 11:27:15 AM
Bralin is diligent during his watches, but finds he is of little help during his downtime. Climbing trees and planting fields are totally unfamiliar activities, and the dwarf avoids them.
Instead, he turns back to the earth. He scours the streambed for a plate sized stone, and sets to work carving a diorama of a dwarven hall into it.
After a week, the images are recognizable. Bralin continues to dally with it, though, working on ever more intricate detail.

Davros Thursday October 26th, 2006 3:36:30 PM
Davros helps with the farming whenever he is not on a watch patrol. It has been a long time since he was a farmer but the old routines and rhythms of a long workday come back easily. He thinks that human farmers could learn much from the elves techniques and he takes notes that he will pass on in the future to human farming communities. Davros asks the elders if they plan on adding some tree planting as well to increase the forest thickness in this area. He always speaks to the elves in their own language to help them feel at ease (and to practice) and he continues to offer to tutor Zaryla to teach her more magic.
Seeing the others from time to time he asks them: "Does anyone think we should make some long range patrols? What about building some defensive structures?"
Fosco Thursday October 26th, 2006 4:45:37 PM
Not shirking his duties, I also stand guard diligently. But not taking a normal routine. Doing something different every time.
Off duty I decide to help in the thought process for the tavern. Making suggestions on food and drink preparations. And going so far as to volunteering to be the guinea pig for said food and drinks.
Harvest Thursday October 26th, 2006 5:02:22 PM
Harvest gives consideration to the question asked by Davros Sapphiredge.
"This will be their land, Davros Sapphiredge," she replies. "They will be here long after we are gone. I do not think that I would build a thing upon their land that they did not think they considered theirs, except in the most dire of circumstances. This, no matter how much the intent is to their benefit."
"Shall we ask them if they wish to fortify the area? It may be interesting to learn what they might consider in the way of fortifications."
Arminas Thursday October 26th, 2006 7:45:14 PM
Arminas continues to help scout the area, looking for game trails as well as the tracks of any creatures that may be dangerous. He visits often with the elders, explaining that as hard it is to imagine, the dwarf really is in charge.
He hunts often with Ewan, and is pleased that a warren of rabbits provides ready food for his friend.
Florin Jadenth Thursday October 26th, 2006 8:51:22 PM
Florin enjoys his time of helping, watching on guard duty and the elves themselves as this is the way of life he might as well get to know better.
Later Florin will summon up Ajax fpr a small ride around the near area as he wishes to let his companion stretch his legs. The next morning Florin decides to also continue his routine from town and start back up training and offers his services to the elves as in teaching the basics of swordfighting if it can be of use.
DM Kathy Friday October 27th, 2006 2:23:30 AM
Even as you begin to ask them about defenses, the elves build a couple of lookout platforms, one on either end of the village. Once the platforms have been built, they post scouts there on rotating shifts. The building and planting continues.
One day, about 10 days after your arrival, you hear a sudden, sharp noise. One of the scouts has blown her signal whistle.
Arminas d20+16=22 d20+10=11 d20+13=21 d20+17=32 d20+6=17 Friday October 27th, 2006 2:58:50 AM
OOC: Not sure if Arminas hears a sound other than the whistle. If not, then he has Ewan go to investigate in the direction the scout is looking. Arminas follows in that direction.
The sound and the alarm quickly register with Arminas. With a whistle, he calls down Ewan. With quick gestures, he starts to talk to his friend in the screeches of eagles.
Fly high, check the noise. Call down to me what you see.
Arminas then moves off through the forest towards the sound.
Any Friday October 27th, 2006 8:40:57 AM
The reverie and calm of the last few days is suddenly broken by the shrill piercing of a whistle.
It takes a moment for Any to realize that this is the signal for trouble, but when that realization does come, he responds quickly in the direction of the whistle. He draws his weapons as he moves, and arrives with sword and dagger in hand.
Lorth Friday October 27th, 2006 9:16:10 AM
When Lorth hears the alarm whistle he summons Tobiasz and rides with him in the direction of the sound...
Bralin d20+13=30 Friday October 27th, 2006 9:19:35 AM
Bralin falls into an easy routine, alternating his activites between keeping watch and working on his carving.
After a second week, the details of beards and cups and banners are beginning to flesh out nicely. Another two months on this 'quest', and Bralin will have a masterpiece on his hands.
[Craft check 30: 1 weeks work = 450 sp value. Total value = 765 sp]
The signal whistle blows, and Bralin immediately sets down his work, mounts Granite, and gallops across the fields toward the sound.
Harvest Friday October 27th, 2006 9:25:03 AM
Harvest Moon turns at the sound of the signal whistle. She hies quickly across the ground of the encampment.
"What is it?" she whispers up from underneath the lookout platform. "What did you see to cause you to blow the alarm?"
Fosco d20+22=38 d20+20=40 d20+12=17 Friday October 27th, 2006 10:20:55 AM

Making sure my crossbow is in hand, loaded, I pull the hood of my cloak up and step into the woods surrounding the encampment. Slowly moving from the opposite side of the encampment, circling to the north then to the other side, looking and listening for sounds that perhaps what made one side sound their horn isnt responded with a second telling the other side is also.

Florin hears the whistle and frowns as he begins moving quickly to see whats up. He holds off on summoning Ajax just incase it doesn't turn out to be something requiring his trusty companion, not to mention he trusted the group and they could handle alot on their own.
Florin does ready Glimmer as he moves and his shield.
DM Kathy Monday October 30th, 2006 12:55:33 AM
Hearing the signal whistle, you all rush to see what the trouble is.
Arminas is the first to get an inkling, when he feels a predator/danger sense from Ewan.
Lorth and Bralin, on horseback, arrive a bit before the others, but Harvest is not far behind them. There is no need to ask the scout what the trouble is; it is clearly visible.
A small group of Sivaine's farmers is running back toward the new village for all they're worth. Behind them, in hot pursuit, are two of the biggest bears you have ever seen. They are easily 12 feet long, and nearly 8 feet high at the shoulder. They have bony brow ridges and claws like sickles.
Behind the bears, on the hillside, are the unmoving forms of two more elves. From this distance, it is impossible to tell whether they yet live.
Any, Davros, and Florin arrive on the scene a few steps behind Harvest. Fosco is circling around to try to get behind the threat.
Right now, the group of elf civilians is about 100 feet from the main group. The bears are about 30 feet behind them, and gaining. The two dead or unconscious elves are another 100 feet from the bears.
The terrain is open grassland, with occasional bushes and trees that can easily be maneuvered around.
Fosco is about 50 feet north of the main group, trying to circle around.
[I will do a map when I can. Just got back from a game convention.]

Harvest (AC19, HP 48/48) d20+7=13 d20+14=23 Monday October 30th, 2006 10:05:44 AM
Too late for Meg Thistleburr's father. Too late for Gerdi. Too late for Devrin.
Harvest Moon runs.
Her old training in the ways of Gargul whisper that death will come when it comes. It tells her that it is not a matter of being late. At the same time, though, the part of Alemi that grows within her soul, tells her that she must try.
So Harvest Moon runs. She runs straight for the two elves lying still in the grass. As they draw near, Harvest eyes each to the extent that her frantic pace allows. Which one to treat first? Which is the more greatly injured?

The dwarf pursues it anyway.
"Hyaahh!" he bellows, and Granite takes off, thundering toward the bear on the right. Bralin pulls out his waraxe as he gallops ahead, and slams it into the bear.

Florin frowns at whats going on and seeing some of his friends charging out to meet the large bears he quickly summons Ajax to him, calling his trusty horse and sighs as he has not proper horse back combat training but he wound do his best.
Once Ajax shows up he takes the time to slip into the saddle before going after his friends.
(OOC:I believe there are more actions there then he can do in one combat round though.)
Arminas Monday October 30th, 2006 9:52:25 PM
The bears come, and Arminas is alarmed at their size. Yet the Culverwood has not been the same since the Fae King has returned. Even large bears though should not attack the elves.
Arminas thinks to cast entangle when the headstrong dwarf races by on his horse. Instead, he pulls a scroll from his pouch and quickly reads it, pointing to the bear that is not being attacked by Bralin.
Speaking in the growls of bears, he says;
"Great bear, do not be angry. We are friends. Come, let us reason."

Moving cautiously, Fosco continues circling around. He can reach the downed elves next turn.
Considerably less cautious, Harvest runs straight past the bears to reach the dead or injured elves. The startled bears watch her go, but she does not pass close enough to them to get attacked. She reaches the elves, but can take no more actions this turn. [Run is a full-round action]
Any pulls his bow and shoots at one of the bears. His shot strikes true, even if it doesn't do as much damage as he would have liked.
[OOC to all: when you score a critical hit, roll separate dice. Do not roll one die and multiply it.]
Bralin charges the same bear, and also scores a hit.
Davros casts a Web spell. Because of the positioning of the trees and bushes (not to mention Bralin), he can only get one of the bears in the Web. He webs the uninjured bear, the one on the left. The bear is not held fast [Reflex save 20], but is entangled and is forced to slow down.
Florin summons his mount [a full-round action].
Arminas pulls out a scroll. He would like to cast the spell, but he isn't close enough to the bear (Charm Animal is a close-range spell; Arminas must be within 25 feet). Instead, he begins to move closer.
The bears have been halted, and the elf civilians stream past you, running full-speed. They are safe, for now.
The webbed bear attempts to pull itself out of the sticky strands. It succeeds, and takes a single, lurching step forward [Strength check 18]. It is still in the web for the moment, but it doesn't look like it will be slowed down for long.
The other bear, meanwhile, lashes out at Bralin and Granite. He hits the dwarf with one massive claw. [Bralin takes 13 damage]. He swipes at Granite with the other claw, then sinks his teeth into the horse. Granite takes a total of 33 points damage.
Behind you, you can her Tahlala's archers scrambling to get into position.
Positions: Bralin is toe-to-toe with one of the bears. The other bear is webbed. Fosco is circling around to the injured or dead elves; Harvest is already there. Florin, Lorth, Davros, and Any are about 100 feet back from the bears. Arminas, having moved, is about 70 feet from the bears.
[I did do a map, but since most of the party is off it at this point, I decided not to send it out. If you want it, let me know.]

The other elf, although still, appears to be breathing, and Harvest stabilizes him with a minor bit of healing magic.
Behind her, Fosco keeps an eye out, but sees and hears nothing besides the battle.
Lorth charges the bear on his steed, and deals it a mighty blow. [The crit changes the triple damage to quadruple, not sextuple. Still a really good hit, though.]
Bralin's steed, unfortunately, is killed from beneath him. The dwarf recovers quickly, though, and stands ready for battle once more.
Davros fires magic missiles at that same bear, who is by now looking pretty hurt.
Arminas fires at the webbed bear, hitting twice. The third shot flies wide.
Florin mounts his steed and heads into the fray.
The bear facing Lorth and Bralin, badly hurt, lashes out. It rakes Bralin again with one of its massive claws; Bralin takes 16 points damage. Its second claw slashes at Lorth, slicing into the paladin; Lorth takes 12 points damage. It then sinks its fangs into Tobiasz; the horse takes 15 points damage.

Lorth will find Bralin's horse is beyond help. It died instantly.
Bralin considers Arminas' call for a moment, but rejects it. The bear is fast escaping, and needs to be brought down now.
He moves in beside Florin's steed, and slams his blade into the bear's side.
[Move 20' to F6 and attack (note he only takes up 5' now that he is dismounted] [hit ac 25 for 21 hp damage]

Without realizing it, she had drifted too close to the bear. Why had she not been concentrating and come in behind Bralin Stoneminder as she had intended? Perhaps, overcome by the tragedy of these creatures who seek but to feed their bellies, but instead, come here to die.
Harvest Moon dives to the side, dodging through the Bear's long reach to reach Bralin where she pulls a wand out of her haversack.

Florin calls out when he hears the comment, "True, however now that I;m in it's attack range it will just get to hit again as I leave it's range."
Florin tries hammering his sword home once more, Glimmering seeming to enjoy the fight as the Woldian runes spelling it's name glows and lightning dances along the blade.

DM Kathy Friday November 3rd, 2006 12:22:04 AM Lorth dismounts, and sees right away that there is no hope for poor Granite. He rushes to help his companions with the other bear, but realizes that they need no help.
Under the combined blows of Any, Bralin, and Lorth--with a few of Arminas's arrows thrown in for good measure--the second bear falls.
Fosco heals the injured elf, who awakens with a start.
Harvest pulls out a wand, ready to heal her injured companions.
Davros looks around but sees nothing out of the ordinary.
Fosco Friday November 3rd, 2006 2:10:16 AM
After helping the startled elf up off the ground, I help him to move away from his fallen friend as quickly as possible. Citing it may still be dangerous and the sooner we can get him off the field the sooner I can get back to his friend.

The danger is over, for now. Any turns from the battle scene, cleaning his weapons, and asks,
"Who is in need of healing? I have limited ability to help two people, who is in most dire need?"
Looking at those around, he turns first to Florin, and then to Bralin. Singing lightly, you see a pale glow as he touches each of the warriors in turn.
"That is all I can do for now."
Then calling to the elven hunters,
"There is plenty of meat upon these two creatures, not to mention the hides. Let us not waste the necessity of killing these beasts. Arminas, please keep watch in case these were not alone."
This said, he now turns back to the bears, and begins to help dress them out for meat.

Arminas picks up his dropped scroll and then walks over to the bears, and carefully examines them. They seem too large, and he is curious if anything else is strange about them.
"Any is right, make wise use of these bears. A dear price has already been paid. Any, will you cut into the stomach as you dress them. I am curious to know if they have been attacking others."
Arminas calls up to Ewan to keep watch from the air as he does so from the ground.
Looking to Bralin he adds:
"It is a shame your good horse died. What will you do with the body? I do not know your attachment to the animal, but it could also provide meat for this village. It is of course your decision. Also, if you want I will follow these tracks to see where these bears came from. We shoud know if there is more danger."

Harvest Friday November 3rd, 2006 11:20:40 AM
Pain and violent death. Harvest Moon stands amidst the bloody grass. How could this have come to pass? How might it have been avoided?
"Arminas Calaelen," she asks, "can such bears as this go easily undetected? How is it that we missed the presence of two such in our wanderings about the area?"
She eyes her wounded companions with an eye to the severity of their injuries before turning back to the place where she had left Fosco Loamsdown and the two fallen elves.
"And if these are a mated pair, might there perhaps be cubs left in a den somewhere?"
She waves to the halfling and the revived elf as they approach from across the field.
"Paladin Lorth, can you assist me in retrieving the body of the other victim? I am afraid that there is nothing that can be done for him. The soul of that one has gone to Gargul."

The bear falls, and Bralin holds his position for a moment, scanning the area for anything else. He sees nothing, and lets down his guard.
The dwarf takes the healing spell from Any with a nod of thanks, and complements it with one of his own. [Cure Moderate Wounds - 18 hp healed]
He also casts a healing spell on Florin and Lorth. [Florin -CMW - 16 hp healed. Lorth - 16 hp healed]
Bralin trudges over to Granite, kneels beside the steed's head, and pats its neck. At Arminas' words, the dwarf sighs deeply. "Twas a good steed," he answers. "But now is merely flesh and bone. The elves may make use of him as they wish."
He is in complete agreement with following the tracks. "Let us go as a group," he responds. He looks at Harvest. "Mayhap these ARE the cubs," he offers dryly.
Davros Friday November 3rd, 2006 6:04:53 PM
Davros stands back a few feet as the bears are stripped for meat and hide and wonders aloud:
"Such bears as these are not normally this aggresive are they? Surely there is plenty of game in the nearby wilderness. I wonder if something or someone riled them up?"
"And if this was an attack of happenstance then I believe we need to increase the range and scope of our patrols." With these words, Davros looks over sadly at the fallen elf. "It would seem that once again, we are too late."
