DM Shegger Monday October 16th, 2006 9:56:01 PM
"Sleep as long as ye need," says the captain as you troop down the stairs.
The only luck that came from the fight is that no one else is hurt. Thorir's sacrifice quite possibly saved everyone else.
The mood is dreary in the sleeping rooms. There's little talk.
Sharif rolls into his cot and cries quietly to himself. Arngrim sits on his cot and stares silently at the wall. Leo tries to act like he isn't bothered, but anyone looking close can see the jaw muscles clenching and notice the rapid blinking of his eyes.
The night passes in relative calm, save for the storm outside. The captain is true to his word and doesn't call for his crew, letting you all come up at your leisure.
When you do go to the main deck, you notice the storm has passed and left the new day cool and sharp. The sky is still adorned in grey clouds, but is currently not raining.
"The bastard's island be two hours from here," says the phantom Finnliath. "Get prepared."

Dietrich Tuesday October 17th, 2006 8:33:48 AM
Dietrich wakes up and distracts himself with some exercise and taking care of his equippment.
When the Captain says the Island is in just two hours distance, he says to everybody:
"I think we should consider Theodore´s advice and keep the surprise element, by letting the ship out of sight of the Island and landing on a boat. Maybe we could use that magic boat again, as we don´t have any sailor among us to steer.
Also, I´d like to have a decision about our proceedings. Does everyone agree with that first suggestion I made some days ago? Having a sneaky scout party ahead, with magic support, to detect the presence of anything unnatural on the Island and finding a good place to camp (water supply, protection against weather and attacks). Than the rest lands and we build up camp."
Vauhwyt Tuesday October 17th, 2006 10:37:13 AM
The liontaur agrees with Dietrich. She does not have another darkness, but she can get ashore all by herself if there is no more magic boat.
Mookie pipes up, "But this time, how's about only the sneaky folks coming!"
Olyn Tuesday October 17th, 2006 1:02:55 PM
In the morning, after praying for new spells to replace the old ones, I head up on deck. Passing out trail rations to everyone. Eat this, you may not be hungry now, but in a few hours you'll be thankful you did.
I eat while watching the islands approaching and passing for any sign of life and if so, what kind.
Oni Tuesday October 17th, 2006 2:21:31 PM
Oni broods for some time on the failed encounter with the fish creature. While on deck, he looks to the sea for answers. More inward study ould be needed to examine how his magicl power worked. And he decided that ship travel was not the best way.
Upon hearing Dietrichs counsel, Oni himself thinks it sound. There is one thing that he feels needs to be examined.
"I think we should all disembark. Send out the search party as you wish. I for one do not want to be trapped on this ship, as it traels again to who knows where. 100 years back to Dirt City is a long trip.
"After getting off the ship, i will stay with whomever is not in the search party."
Theodore & Macaw Tuesday October 17th, 2006 9:25:40 PM
"I also think we should all go to the island," Theodore agrees with Oni. "I don't think it wise to split the party. If the scouts are attacked, the rest of us won't have any expediant means of helping. Perhaps we should all get to the island, and then send the scouts out."
Vorelle Tuesday October 17th, 2006 9:41:35 PM
Vorelle agrees to Dietrich's plan, and volunteers to be one of the "sneaky people."
Mostly, she just wants to get off the boat. It smells, and it rocks, and the fact that big ugly monsters can rear up out of the water and drag you back down with them does not improve matters.
DM Shegger Tuesday October 17th, 2006 9:49:37 PM
"There be no boats above me ship," says Finnliath. "What I did have rotted years and years ago. I'll have ta be taken me ship right ta the island, unless ya be wanting ta swim."
Soon, an ominous black shadow appears directly ahead. "The island," the captain says unnecessarily. As the ship continues to sail, the shadow grows bigger and more defined.
Sharif, Arngrim, and Leo troop up to watch as you get closer to your goal. "We'll do as you direct," Sharif says to Dietrich, then turns back to watch the approaching land mass.
rose Wednesday October 18th, 2006 12:33:09 AM "How about Piper, Mookie, and Macaw go scout for us?"
Rose suggests
"No matter what we all stay together, not staying together can kill us."
Dietrich Wednesday October 18th, 2006 8:39:58 AM
Dietrich summerizes the consensus as such: We all together land on the Island (preferentially with a magic boat). The scouts go examine it, the rest stays on the beach till they return.
As always, the fighter would agree with the point of not splitting the party, but for scouting, there´s no use in having everybody accompanying and making noise, giving away their position. The whole point is exactly for the scouts not to be seen or heard, and consequently not to be attacked.
Regarding Rose´s suggestion, he agrees and would send them scouting right away, before the rest, if the birds are willing to do it.
Finally, he asks the Captain to stop the ship. "Does anyone have the means of calling that magic boat we used before? I´d really like to avoid landing with the ghost ship and calling the attention of the whole Island"
Olyn Wednesday October 18th, 2006 11:18:21 AM

Vauhwyt and Mookie Wednesday October 18th, 2006 1:18:07 PM
"Uh, sorry," says Vauhywt, "but Mookie stays with me. We're a team."
"You tell 'em, Boss!" caws Mookie.
"Well, actually, it is just that I would expect him to die on his own."
"Hey!"
"Anyway," Vauhwyt continues, "As soon as the captain tells us that we can leave the ship, I'll change into a sea elf, and Mookie into an octopus, and we'll swim for shorre. We'll swim within Message spell range, about 140 feet, so that we can talk with you at all times. We'll swim ahead and to one side of the ship. That way at least some of us will get to the beach undetected."
"Then we'll scout the shore nearby. After that we'll change back into normal form and scout on land, at last meeting up again."
Vauhwyt follows through with this plan, casting Message, Alter Self, and then swimming ahead of the ship to the island.
Oni Wednesday October 18th, 2006 5:09:35 PM
Oni listens to the liontaur with awe. Could someone actually do all that? Looking around the group, he sees no awe in any of the others faces. When the change comes forth, and vauhwyt takes the leap, he hangs his jaw open in surprise. Again he looks to the others. Shock fills his bones as the others show no reaction.
"Does she do that all the time?" He directs the question at dietrich, then the others.
Theodore & Macaw Wednesday October 18th, 2006 8:15:15 PM
Theodore shakes his head. "I don't have anything to get us to shore," he says to Dietrich.
He turns to watch the approaching land. "Who will be in the scouting party, then? I guess I'm not. Not...sneaky...enough." He smiles at Vauhwyt.
Vorelle Wednesday October 18th, 2006 9:28:18 PM
Vorelle watches anxiously after Vauhwyt and Mookie. She wishes her impetuous friend weren't in quite such a hurry to put herself in danger.
"A-all the t-t-time," she confirms to Oni. "Y-you should s-s-s-see the b-b-blood st-stuff she c-c-calls up. Yuk."
DM Shegger Wednesday October 18th, 2006 9:49:10 PM
As you make plans for departure from the ship, the island continues to grow larger.
"I'd hold off on jumpin' ship, lassie," he says "We're still an hour out, unless you be wantin' ta tread water fer that long." (OOC - Although the sea elf form grants you a swim movement, I'm ruling that the automatically successful swim check that goes along with it does not apply with an alter self spell. Swimming is a skill that requires training, so you'll need to make a check every round.)
"If ye be havin' another means o' transport ta the shore, then I can stop the ship. Do ye?"
Mer-Vauhwyt and Octomookie d20+15=35 d20+15=17 d20+2=21 d20+2=7 Thursday October 19th, 2006 7:09:21 AM
[OOC: Shegger, that sounds fine. I'll take Mer-folk form rather than Sea-elf. The Alter Self grants racial skill bonuses, so with a mermaid's +8 and Vauhwyt's own +2, she'll have a +10 on checks, even untrained. I figure that's fine for normal, non-rough water. Please roll whatever checks might be needed.]
Vauhwyt looks at the water and thanks the captain for his good advice. She'll cast the spell when the ship is 15 minutes out.
She listens to Oni and reassures him that she is nothing special. "Look, Theo can do more powerful magic with his eyes closed! Olyn too! And Berlon here knows how to make magic items. Altering my self is the most potent trick I know ... and sure it is useful, but it is really not such a big idea."
She hears Vorelle's comment and says as well, "You know, ever since the Fae King was defeated, my blood magic has not worked. Funny." [OOC: Lost the blood magic (which came from a seal) when they revamped the seals. Oh well.]
Vauhwyt looks at the water and heeds the captain's advice "On second thought, I'll be a mermaid. Better swimmers, and I need all the help I can get!"
She'll cast the spell about 15 minutes out, slipping into the water and using waves, surf, rocks, reefs, and kelp to hide in as she scouts ahead of the boat towards the island.
About five minutes out, she'll cast her Message spell to be able to talk with her friends.
Hide and Move Silent Checks: Hide 35 (Nat 20! Woot!) and Move Silent 17. Maybe the sound of the surf will cover the splashing noises of the swimming liontaur in mermaid's clothing.
As she goes, Vauhwyt keeps her eyes and ears open.
Spot 21, Listen 7.
Well, mostly her eyes. The sound of her own splashing kinda cancels out whatever she might have heard.
Dietrich Thursday October 19th, 2006 8:53:41 AM
Dietrich smiles at Oni´s surprise and has to think about the party´s adventures and Vauhwyt´s deeds. He thinks the same as Vorelle... Vauhwyt going alone ahead was not exactly what the party had decided...
As there´s no possibility to land without the ship (where´s Berlon anyway?), Dietrich just takes his bow and keeps himself at the front, ready for battle. Before the ship arrives, the party should already have some information from their lionine friend.
Finally, he wonders about the possibility of Piper and Macaw flying ahead, as Rose had proposed.
Berlon Thursday October 19th, 2006 3:32:51 PM
Berlon remains quiet as plans are made. He keeps to himself and doesn't say much as the ship approaches the island.
(OOC: I am back from my work related trip, Shegger got an email saying I would be gone a few days. I think.)
Theodore & Macaw Thursday October 19th, 2006 7:46:46 PM
"Yeah, I don't mind sending Macaw out," says Theodore. Macaw gives the skinny wizard a sharp peck on the noggin and flaps away towards the island.
Rubbing his head, Theodore smiles when Vauhwyt and Mookie leap overboard. "It looks like we're all back to our normal ways." He nods to each of his friends and pats the three newbies on their shoulders.
DM Shegger Thursday October 19th, 2006 9:42:51 PM
When the ship gets within a reasonable distance of the island, Vauhwyt and Mookie change form and bail into the water. Luckily, the strange force field that kept you from leaving is not there. Theodore and Rose also let Macaw and Piper take to the air to scout ahead.
The island turns out to be little more than a mountain rising up from the sea. A little way up the mountain, sitting precariously among the jagged stones, a dark monastery awaits.
Captain Finnliath stands at the front of his ship as you coast into a rickety dock and slow to a stop. The dock leads to a stone causeway which winds up the mountain to the door of the monastery.
Before anyone else has a chance to disembark, Captain Finnliath turns to face the group. "I do be appreciative of yer effort, lubbers. To show it, please take what ye need from this here chest."
He draws your attention to a wooden chest, reinforced by iron strips, to his side. You could've sworn it wasn't there before.
Vauhwyt Highlight to display spoiler: {You discover little, other than the water is icy cold. You see no opposition or suspicious looking objects as you glide through the water. The only trouble you come up against is how to get out of the water. The rocks are steep and slippery. (DC climb 30) An easier option would be to cruise over to the dock where the ship has berthed.}
Theodore and Rose Highlight to display spoiler: {You get no definite sense of danger from your familiars. Just a stubborn ominous feeling.}
Vorelle Thursday October 19th, 2006 10:42:57 PM
[argh! missed a post! sorry!]
Suspiciously, Vorelle eyes the chest. Then pokes the chest. It seems real enough. What's in it?
Oni Friday October 20th, 2006 1:28:13 AM
As the group disembarks oni feels better, land under his feet once again. He too is curious about the chest, but not enough to check it.
"Dietrich, what say you on how we should preceed? I believe we should use ranged attacks before all else. It seems several of us have bows, or crossbows. What is your opinion on the building up ahead?" Oni looks to the others for support, and confidence.
Rose Friday October 20th, 2006 5:15:55 AM
Rose looks in the chest as the captain suggests.
Piper flies with Macaw trying to locate their opponent.
ooc: sorry about the missed post i have a bad cold.
Dietrich Friday October 20th, 2006 8:11:16 AM
As the Island turns out to be little less than a rock with a strange looking temple, probably the whole scouting idea will be a little useless.
Nevertheless, the warrior would like to have a scan of the exterior part of it, by Piper and Macaw (who have already been sent out) and by Vauhwyt.
Concerning the chest, Dietrich is quite curious and not that suspicious, expecting something good and useful out of it. He´ll wait for Rose to open it, and for the spell-casters to have a look on stuff.
When Oni asks him about procedures, he agrees about the use of long-range weapons, at least for the first rounds of combat. "I share this position. But our fight will probably be underground, with limited space, so the long-range weapons and magic will be of use only for short. I´d suggest the following: 1) We listen to the preliminar report of Vauhwyt and the birds. 2) We see what´s in the chest and if it can help us. 3) Providing there is no extra-ordinary information, we head to the entry of the Temple in a spread-out formation (to avoid any surprises like fire-balls). Vorelle some feet ahead, using her sharp senses. The main party with the warriors at the outside circle. The clerics at a second range, ready to help in combat and cast. ROse and Theo in the inner circle. 4) At the temple, we check the entrance magically and on traps. 5) If we can enter, I´d like to have some scouting at least some feet ahead of the main party. The 'sneaky' guys and people with scanning abilities (such as detect undead) should have a first look, possibly supported by invisibility and similar spells. Some distance behind, just as not to give away the position of the scouting group, the main group advances, with warriors in front, clerics second, caster in the middle, a warrior as rear-guard. Everybody with his long-range weapon ready.
After that we see again.
Vauhwyt and Mookie Friday October 20th, 2006 10:34:10 AM
Since the rock is so small, Vauhwyt will circle it once, even if it means going out of Message range. Then she and Mookie will return to the ship at the dock and report back her findings.
Berlon Friday October 20th, 2006 5:08:51 PM
The gnome nods, listening to Dietrich's plan as he seems more interested in the chest. "Whatever you think is best, Dietrich. It won't matter a lick what we plan, but whatever you think is best..."
He then asks the captain for a rundown of the contents of the chest, burning an Identify spell in the unlikely event the captain doesn't know what something is.
Theodore & Macaw Sunday October 22nd, 2006 9:27:24 PM
"There's no definitive danger. At least that Macaw can identify." Theodore sends a mental command for the bird to come back. "I don't want him getting too far away."
He then turns his attention to the chest that just appeared. He's curious as to what the captain's giving them.

Theodore and Rose inform the party that there is no obvious danger sensed by the ravens. You hear nothing from Vauhwyt. Oni and Dietrich discuss plans to enter the monastery.
Oni quickly hops off the ship and onto the dock, which proves stable enough. The centaur is glad to have an unmoving base beneath him.
Vorelle opens the chest. Within, you find a scroll with magical runes, two vials of differing liquids, a metal chime, many pieces of gold, and assorted gems.
"Just some things I've been findin' in me journeys." He laughs. "Can't be usin' 'em, now can I? Don't know what they are, or if they even do anythin' at all."
Vauhwyt Highlight to display spoiler: {You circle the island in about fifteen minutes, but find nothing of interest. The rocks shoot high from the ocean, and you can't find any place to easily get onto the island other than the dock.}

Ashore at the dock, she changes back to liontaur form, ending the spell.
Dietrich Monday October 23rd, 2006 8:08:09 AM
Dietrich listens to BErlon and just hopes the gnome isn´t right this time...
Contrary to Vorelle, Dietrich is still very interested in the chest. As the captain can´t say anything about its contents, Dietrich would like some quick analisys, maybe there´re interesting magic items that can help them.
After that, he´ll go on shore, hopefully with everybody taking position and moving as has been suggested.
Berlon d20+3=21 Monday October 23rd, 2006 11:18:08 AM
Berlon scratches his beard some more as he goes over the contents of the chest with Dietrich.
"I didn't mean we don't have a chance of succeeding," he says to Dietrich while he reaches into his cloak, "it's just that whatever we plan isn't very likely to be what we actually do."
That being said, the gnome prepares to help with the contents of the chest.
First, he closes his eyes and waves his hands over the chest, casting Detect Magic.
Once that is done, he will touch his holy symbol to the scroll, casting Identify.
After that, he will take the item he searched for in his cloak, his Pearl of Power (II), and recast Identify on the chimes.
Finally he'll pitch in and count up the gold and gems. He'll spend a few moments going over the gems, using his limited knowledge to see if he can deduce how much they are worth. (Appraise check 21)

Theodore & Macaw Monday October 23rd, 2006 9:20:31 PM
"Is this something we can leave here and retreive when we come back?" Theodore asks the ghost, pointing at the chest. "It's probably not something we want to lug into the monastery."
He seems particularly interested in whatever Berlon might discover that's magical in the chest.

Berlon concentrates over the contents of the chest while the rest of the party looks on.
"Aye, aye," replies Finnliath to Theodore. "O' course ya can be leaving anythin' on board. It'll be waitin' fer ya."
A few of the others seem impatient to get going. "Ya can be countin' the gold on the return trip, laddie," says the captain to Berlon.
(There are many, many gold coins. It will take at least an hour to count everything and appraise the gems.)

As you all troop up the twisting trail towards the monastery, you notice no animal or plant life. The island is barren save for the sharp rocks sprouting everywhere.
You soon find yourself a few hundred feet before the monastery. The building appears fairly basic. Double doors made of steel seem to be the only entrance. Perhaps thirty or forty feet to the right of the entrance, stands a squat tower. The monastery falls back and extends to the left another seventy feet. Upwards, the monastery extends another story. The top of the monastery is lined by stone gargoyles. Many of them chipped, or missing parts.

Vorelle Highlight to display spoiler: {The double doors have rusted and pitted circle knockers. Seeing no hinges, you assume the doors open inward into the monastery. Fairly common for a building used to welcoming strangers and the like. You see no sign of anything suspicious.}
Berlon Thursday October 26th, 2006 10:22:35 PM
"Hmmm," Berlon says as he sees Vorelle creep towards the doors. He retrieves the Chimes of Opening he's recently pocketed and strikes them once, seeing if it does anything to the doors.
Vorelle Friday October 27th, 2006 2:25:52 AM
From her position near the doors, Vorelle turns and beckons to her friends. If they cannot see her in her present position, she moves to where they can see her, and beckons.

Seeing Vorelle´s sign, Dietrich will march with the rest of the main group.
He asks again for one of the birds to take a look at the Tower, as it would be an excellent spot for a sniper to fire at the advancing party.

Theodore & Macaw Sunday October 29th, 2006 3:55:47 PM
Theodore keeps his crossbow at the ready. He is interested to see what happens when Berlon rings the chimes.
At Vorelle's sign, he moves towards her.
DM Shegger d2=1 Sunday October 29th, 2006 9:50:21 PM
Berlon, Rose, Vauhwyt, Dietrich, and Theodore move to the doors at Vorelle's signal. Once there, Berlons strikes the chime obtained from Captain Finnliath's chest. With an ominous shudder, the double doors swing inward, with a piercing squeal.
Inside, the hall appears to be sixty feet deep and twenty-five feet wide. Fifteen feet in, and to the left, stairs march up to the next level. Further beyond, the hall opens to the left to a room you can't see.
The inside of the monastery appears to be made of simple stone. The decor is very basic, most of it has rotted away long ago. There are some threadbare curtains and tapestries along the wall, though. At the back of the hall, a black and twisted altar stands. Before that, a long broken table dominates the center of the hall. What takes place at the table is an image directly out of a nightmare.
About the table sit five animated corpses in tattered clothes and armor. On the table lies another corpse, this one fresher than the others. Those around the table are ripping gobs of flesh, limbs, and innards from the body laid out before them, devouring the bloody mess as you look on in horror.
Turning your way, the five corpses stand and begin to move towards you. Fresh meat. (Closest is 25' from the door.)
As you watch them advance, those at the door to the monastery feel a light rain of debris upon your heads. Looking up, you see that pebbles and loose mortar has been dislodged by four of the once stationary gargoyles atop the roof of the building. The monsters gaze down upon you with baleful eyes. (15' above those at the door.)
Prepare for combat!
(OOC - Berlon, Dietrich, Rose, Theodore, Vauhwyt, and Vorelle are at the doors. Olyn, Oni and the three youths from the City are 30' back down the trail. They can see the gargoyles animate, but do not know about the enemies inside.)

Vorelle shudders at the sight of the macabre feast. As the animated corpses move toward the group, she reacts on instinct, drawing her bow and firing three quick arrows at the nearest target.

I expected as much.
Cast spell, Summon Monster IV (Choose to summon 1d3 from the III list) Beginning of my next round, 3 Celestial Hippogriffs materialize.
Side note, I do speak celestial, so communication isnt a problem.
Vauhwyt (AC21/19, HP57, Grapple DC25) and Mookie (AC18, HP28) and Bear (AC11, HP19) d100=98 d20+13=24 d20+28=34 d20+8=18 d4+4=6 d20+4=24 2d6(4+2)+1=7 Monday October 30th, 2006 6:23:40 AM
Reduced, Monkey-shaped Mookie, sitting on Vauhwyt, grabs the Bag of Tricks, reaches in, and throws a ball of fluff at the undead. It expands to become a (roll 98) Black Bear.
The bear charges an undead. It hits AC18 for 6. The bear's AC during and after a charge is 11 ... next round it will rise to its normal 13.
Vauhwyt runs forward, around or over the undead. If needed, she rolls a tumble check of 24 and a jump check of 34. She wants to end up between the broken table and the altar, hopefully so she will have some cover or maybe be able to use the terrain to limit how many can attack her at once.
Her tumble check is reduced to 19 if she has to move between 35 and 70 feet. She won't move more than 70 feet. While she is moving, she is still reduced, so her AC is 21.
After 70 feet (at most), she stops and cancels the Reduce for herself (it remains on Mookie). Now she is normal size and her AC is 19.
Since the nearest undead was 25 feet from her, and since she has moved 25 feet to them, then past them, then to the altar, odds are she is quite a ways behind them. So she hopes that if a caster wants to cast an area spell, she will be well out of the way. That may not be true of the bear, but oh well. There are more bears where that one came from!
She has her spear in hand (10 foot reach), so if an undead advances on her, she hopes to get an attack of opportunity first as it closes.
Possible attack of opportunity with spear: Hits AC24! Nat 20. But undead are immune to crits, so no reason to follow up. Damage: 7.
Note to DM: Shegger, next round Vauhwyt will cast Enlarge Person and the round after that she intends to grapple. So please consider posting the enemies' grapple DCs.

Dietrich swears as they are attacked by the undead and the gargoyles at once. Again the party couldn´t get good enough intelligence before acting and has to fight on disadvantageous conditions.
The warrior lets loose an arrow at the same monster Vorelle shot at: hits ac 14; damage 8 (magic)
He lets the bow down and fast-draws the great-sword. He should be at Vorelle´s side right now, blocking the door with her, each-one covering the other´s flank.
To Berlon he calls: "Do your holy stuff against this foul things, quick!!"
Berlon d20+2=6 d20+2=15 2d6(3+4)+7=14 Monday October 30th, 2006 5:10:57 PM

Theodore & Macaw Monday October 30th, 2006 9:08:31 PM
Theodore quickly backpedals from the monastery, moving back to be with those who stayed down the path.
After moving thirty feet, he casts mage armor upon himself.
"There are undead in the monastery! Five of them!" he says excitedly to those still on the path. Then he trains his crossbow on one of the gargoyles and prepares to fire.

As chaos ensues, Vorelle is the first to react. Drawing her bow, she fires three shots, her hands blurring as she draws and releases each arrow. Two shafts blossom from the chest of the nearest corpse, the third sprouts from his forehead. Besides the three brief jerks from the arrows, the zombie continues on, grinning evilly at Vorelle. A deep, throaty hiss issues from behind bared teeth. (Damage for 17 HP)
Olyn begins the incantation for a summoning spell.
Monkey Mookie chucks a furry ball which turns into a rushing black bear which rises up and deals a powerful blow to the arrowed monster. The blow jars the creature, but doesn't finish the job. (Damage for 6 HP)
Vauhwyt attempts to use the distraction to rush to the far side of the hall. The path of least resistance is, unfortunately, past two enemies. The first deader throws a wild haymaker, which the liontaur tumbles under. She comes up right into the arc of a bastard sword swung by the second corpse. The rusted blade cuts neatly into the left shoulder of Vauhwyt as she continues on. (Vauhwyt takes 5 HP damage) She ends between the busted table and a horrible blood-stained altar. Ending the reduce person spell, Vauhwyt returns to her normal size.
Dietrich looses an arrow at the nearest zombie. The shaft flies just past his ear and shatters against the wall. The large warrior drops his bow and pulls forth his blade, preparing for the descending gargoyles.
Berlon brandishes his holy symbol towards the approaching zombies. The two nearest to the left of the table turn in fear and run towards the back of the hall. The one closest to the bear takes another blow to his back, staggers a bit, but continues on. (Damage for 6 HP)
Theodore retreats back down the trail and casts a protective spell upon himself.
Sharif, Arngrim, and Leo draw their weapons and move up the trail to stand at the door to the monastery.
The four gargoyles descend on their prey. Two of the gargoyles strike at Dietrich, but their claws fail to penetrate the bulky warriors army. The other two both connect on Rose, ripping into her shoulder and torso. (Rose hit twice for 5 & 3 HP damage)
Inside, the two zombies turned by Berlon try to exit the hall. The first takes the point of Vauhwyt's spear in its side. (Damage for 7 HP)
Two zombies with bastard swords advance and flank Vauhwyt. The last moves to engage with the summoned bear.
(Zombie AC 15, grapple 18) (Two zombies are flanking Vauhwyt. Two more, both wounded, are heading west out of the hall. The third is fifteen feet from the monastery door next to the bear.)
(Oni, Olyn, and Theodore are thirty feet from the monastery. Everyone else is still outside the doors. Two gargoyles are next to Dietrich and two next to Rose.)

Vorelle [AC 18; hp 63/63] Monday October 30th, 2006 11:29:38 PM
Vorelle considers taking more shots, but she is not concerned with the fleeing zombies and the others are too close to Vauhwyt. She's afraid she might hit her friend instead.
So, she puts away her bow and moves to flank one of the zombies with Vauhwyt, drawing her axes as she goes.

Happily seeing his friends from the other realm appear to help the group in this foray, as they appear 25 feet ahead of him, 5 feet behind Rose.
Yelling in Celestial: Destroy the Gargoyles, starting with the 2 on the Halfling.
Whereupon the 3 Celestial Hippogriffs move forward and engage the 2 Gargoyles attacking Rose. (since there is no map I will assign Griff #1 and 2 to attack the left one (?), aquiring flanking positions and Griff #3 to engage the right one (?), also aquiring a flanking position with Rose.)
Being they only had to take a 5 foot step to become engaged, they get their full attack of 2 claws and a bite.
Griff #1 on left Gargoyle attacking Rose: Ripping at its stony flesh with both claws, hitting ac 23 and 22 for 16 points of damage. Followed up with a bite, hitting ac 17 for 9 points of damage. Total damage - 25.
Griff #2 on left Gargoyle attacking Rose: Tearing at its stony hide with both claws, hitting ac 27 and 31 <nat.20, poss crit, followed up with a 24, crit.> for 23 points of damage. Then attempting to bite into its flesh, hitting ac 5, a miss. Total damage - 23.
Griff #3 on the right Gargoyle attacking Rose: Slashing at the Gargoyle, hitting ac 13 (miss?) and 22 for 18 damage (if ac 13 misses, only did 10 with claws). And then attempting to bite the creature, and stubbing its hind claw on a rock, missing by a mile. hitting ac4 <nat.1>. Total damage - 18/10 (if ac13 misses).
As the Hippogriffs enter the fray I move up to be behind Rose, within arm reach, preparing to use a wand for next round.

Vauhwyt tumbles back 15 feet out of reach of the undead (Tumble Check 12 is a failure, so Vauhwyt (AC19) is open to an AoO from one undead; Tumble Check 17 beats the DC needed to tumble past the other one.)
Maybe she ends up on top of the altar?
Now out of reach, she casts Enlarge Person on herself. Her arcane failure roll of 93 is no problem. Her AC is now 17.
Mookie takes a Cure Light Wounds scroll out of Vauhwyt's pack and reads it using his supernatural voice, his dexterous monkey fingers, and a share of Vauhwyt's Use Magic Device skill. His UMD check is a +10 with a Decipher Script synergy. He rolls a 13 and fails to cast the spell.
Huge Vauhwyt now has a natural reach of 10 feet. If she gets a chance to make an attack of opportunity as undead approach, she will do so with her hand, to initiate a grapple.
The bear attacks the undead that has engaged it: paw hits AC15 for 6 points. Other paw and bite miss.
Potential AoO Grapple from Vauhwyt: Roll to grab foe: hits AC24. Roll to grapple: 23 beats the target DC18. Damage (armor spikes): 10 plus now we are grappled.

The zombie by the bear slams his body into the animal, giving the beast a mighty knock on his noggin. (Hits bear for 7 HP damage)
The two turned zombies continue to flee into the adjoining room.
The unarmed zombie attacking Vauhwyt, on the left side of the hall, gives a powerful hammerblow to her shoulder. (Hits Vauhwyt for 4 HP damage)
The other zombie flanking Vauhwyt, on the right side of the hall, carves a mighty chunk from the side of the liontaur with his rusty bastard sword. (Made a critical against Vauhwyt for 22 HP damage)
The two gargoyles surrounding Rose attack the halfling in a flurry of fangs, claws, and horns. The halfling is agile, dodging most of the attacks, but two claws get through and one manages to bite into her arm. (Hits Rose for 6, 5, & 2 HP damage)
The other gargoyles pound on Dietrich, but only one claw gets through his defenses, leaving a bloody trail across his cheek. (Hits Dietrich for 4 HP damage)
Vorelle stashes her bow and draws her axes as she moves into the monastery to help out Vauhwyt. Moving to the left side of the hall to go behind the summoned bear (to avoid an AoO) Vorelle moves to flank the unarmed zombie attacking the liontaur.
Olyn's three celestial hippogriffs appear and rip into the gargoyles attacking Rose. One of them falls beneath the vicious claws and bite of two hippogriffs. (One gargoyle dead)
The remaining hippogriff catches the other gargoyle a powerful blow. (Hits gargoyle for 10 HP damage)
Olyn then moves quickly into the fray, drawing a wand as he does.
Rose was taken by surprise when the battle started and only now manages to draw her short sword and take a feeble swing that kills nothing but air. Her wounds might be taking their toll.
Dietrich decides to fight back, dealing a heavy blow against the gargoyle that slipped past his own defenses. The stone monster staggers but regains his feet and hisses at Dietrich.
Back in the monastery, Vauhwyt tries to get out of a tight situation, tumbling from between her assailants. One of the zombies sees it coming and lands a heavy fist along her jaw. (Hits Vauhwyt for 4 HP damage)
She then summons her power and grows in size. She sets her spear, prepared for the coming attack.
The bear summoned by Mookie slashes into its zombie. (Hits zombie for 6 HP damage)
Berlon moves into the monastery, right up to the zombie fighting the bear, and casts his bless spell. (Affects everyone.)
Oni moves beside Theodore and readies his bow.
Theodore fires off four magic missiles which strike the remaining gargoyle attacking Rose. (Hits gargoyle for 15 HP damage)

Griff #3 continues its assault on the remaining Gargoyle attacking Rose. Striking true this round with its flurry of attacks, hitting ac 17 and 23 with its claws for a total of 16 points of damage and following up that with an almost critical bite for 9 points of damage.

Vauhywt yelps, "OUCH!" as the undead creature strikes home. "Mookie!"
"Tryin' Boss! Tryin'!" says the familiar. The monkey graps another scroll (now has two) and hops off the liontaur's rump (five foot step), out of reach of the undead. Then he tries again to read a scroll. This time he rolls a 25! Good enough! 8 points of healing flow into Mookie's master.
Vauhwyt herself grabs at a zombie -- the one Vorelle is flanking with her. She grabs AC28! Her follow up grapple check is a 34. Vauhwyt successfully grapples the zombie, inflicting 6 hp damage with her armor spikes.
The bear attacks the undead that just hit it: paws hit AC23 amd 15; the bite misses. The bear does 13 hp damage to its foe.

Oni lets two arrows fly. The first flies wide, but the second strikes true, pushing the monster against the side of the monastery. The gargoyle points a feeble finger at the centaur. (Hits gargoyle for 10 HP damage)
Olyn's summoned hippogriff finishes him off, leaving a greasy stain of the gargoyle's blood on the wall and little more. (Gargoyle dead)
The two other hippogriffs flit over to help out Dietrich. They each power through one of the gargoyle's defenses. (Hits gargoyle for 10 and 9 HP damage)

The remaining gargoyle notices the look of pain on Dietrich's face and shrieks in excitement, attacking again, throwing his whole body against the large fighter. But Dietrich knows the gargoyle is outmatched and shores up his defenses, parrying expertly save for one claw that manages to get through and rake a leg. (Hits Dietrich for 4 HP damage)
The zombie grappled with Vauhwyt tries another headbutt, but the liontaur feels him rear back and manages to avoid the blow. The sword wielding zombie slashes at Vauhwyt again, connecting with the heavy blade into her flank. (Hits Vauwhyt for 12 HP damage)
Rose, having regained her senses, uses her wand to call forth an unseen servant for Piper. With the assistance of the unseen servant, the bird flings a fuzzy ball which turns into another black bear. Dietrich is glad the fight is basically over and thanks Berlon for his divine help.
He takes a look around, sheathing the sword and taking the longbow again.
The warrior says in a concerned way:
"Friends, this fight was just the beginning, we have to save our energy for what is to come. We don´t have to overload the enemy always with all our magic, just what´s enough to win the fight. And Vauhwyt, you´ve been heavily wounded for going alone against all the zombies! We need to start fighting in a more coordinated way, together, protecting each others flanks and making sure noone is surrounded by foes. Thanks Wardd you´re still alive, but it could have come differently, just remember poor Jack. And healing those wounds cost Olyn a powerful spell that we´ll miss later."
After that, he looks to Rose and says: "Take a professional look at the room, please, I don´t want anymore umpleasant surprises."
To the clerics he asks: "Any idea of which &$%$ evil entity this monastery is?"
Finally he says to the newcomers: "Why did you stay behind on the path? I´m sorry I didn´t expressly call everybody to come with me, but I assumed you´d follow when Vorelle beckoned us to come. So now again: With the exception of the scouting group, who has only to clear our way and come back if there´s trouble, the rest of the party stays and fights together!"

So he says: "Comrades, I didn´t want to put anyone down. Just wanted to emphasize the need of keeping together and acting coordinatedly (glancing more at Vauhwyt´s direction than actually at the youths)."
The warrior waits for Rose´s report and asks again if anyone knows what kind of monastery they´re in. As there´re still some wounded, Dietrich waits for them to be treated.
When everything is checked out and the scouts are ready, he´d suggest for the party to advance in the direction the zombies fled to. Again, with the intelligence gathering of the scouts, before the rest moves on.

Vorelle keeps an eye out for danger, but nothing suspicious comes snooping about. Olyn dismisses the three celestial hippogriffs. They vanish in a poof. The two bears are left to sniff about. They don't seem to care too much for the zombies or the macabre feast on the ruined table.
Olyn moves over to have a quiet chat with Sharif, Leo, and Arngrim. The warriors seem to regain their composure between his ministrations and Dietrich maintaining that he didn't mean anything by what he said.
The large warrior asks again for some snooping to be done in the current room they're in. Are there any secrets in this room? What's the altar for?

Vauhwyt tries one last time to climb up ... and now she gets the hang of it with a nat 20! She looks around up there (Spot 3) and detects magic. Then she comes back down.
She agrees that there is no reason to dilly dally. She follows Dietrich and Theo following the zombies.

Dietrich Tuesday November 7th, 2006 2:43:19 PM
As there seem to be nothing special about the hall, Dietrich waits for the scouts to move ahead and then will follow with the mainparty.
He suggests for the clerics to stay more on front than usual, so they can use their powers against other undead creatures appearing out of nothing.
He´d also really like to know of whom this monastery actually is, as he thinks this would help to solve the mistery and get out alive of this &¨$&¨% place.
Olyn Tuesday November 7th, 2006 4:18:21 PM
Assumes his proper place in the party order and follows.
Theodore & Macaw HP 29/29 AC 17 (mage armor, dodge) Tuesday November 7th, 2006 9:27:53 PM
"I don't see anything," Theodore reports and then falls in with the rest as they move onward.
DM Shegger Tuesday November 7th, 2006 9:56:25 PM
Rose and Vorelle do a bit of searching about (5 minutes) but find nothing of interest. Outside, Vauhwyt manages to climb up the wall and search about. She also finds nothing of interest.
The group decides to move on, going into the next room. It turns out to be the kitchen. Any food that was once here is now nothing but dust. There are various counters and cooking implements. Even from a distance, it's plain to see nothing is of use.
There are several exits from the kitchen. The hall where you came from is back east. Three separate doors to the north, one door to the west, and another to the southeast. From the southeastern door comes a racket as of something falling.
Vorelle d20+11=29 d20+14=24 Tuesday November 7th, 2006 10:37:20 PM
Automatically, Vorelle's gaze drops to the floor as she tries to find some sign of which way the zombies went. Perhaps there are footprints in the dust.
[Search (to find tracks) 31; Survival (to follow tracks) 26. (Forgot to add my +2 for undead being a Favored Enemy)]
Berlon Tuesday November 7th, 2006 11:30:41 PM
"Ok, let's go already. We need to hunt down the ones I turned. Speaking of which..."
Berlon will cast Eagle's Splendor on himself, then start moving towards the way the turned undead went.
OOC: New Cha 15
Dietrich Wednesday November 8th, 2006 6:01:06 AM
Dietrich suggests someone starts mapping the monastery, preferentially one of the spellcasters, who should have paper ready.
He waits for Vorelle to find the track and will follow after the scouts.
Vauhwyt (AC17, HP54 of 57, Grapple DC25) and Mookie (AC18, HP28) and Bear (AC13, HP12 of 19) Wednesday November 8th, 2006 2:17:04 PM
Over five minutes of searching, most of Vauhwyt's spells expire. Mookie's Bear has only 4 more minutes left.
During the five minutes, Vauhwyt sketches out a map.
When the sound of something falling is heard, Vauwhty moves toward the sound, saying to Vorelle, Berlon, and Dietrich, "Come on, you guys! Stop looking at the dust! Didn't you hear that noise?"
Mookie, clinging to her shoulder, tells the bear to go in front as the liontaur approaches.

Theodore & Macaw HP 29/29 AC 17 (mage armor, dodge) Wednesday November 8th, 2006 7:48:17 PM
Theodore stows his crossbow and steps about ten feet from the door where the racket had come from.
"Okay! Open it, and I'll zap 'em with a spell," he says, flinging his arms wide.
DM Shegger Wednesday November 8th, 2006 9:20:21 PM
Vorelle scans the area for signs of recent travel.
Vorelle Highlight to display spoiler: {You indeed find tracks in the dust, short shuffling movements heading towards the southeast door.}
Dietrich suggests mapping the monastery and Vauhwyt obliges.
The liontaur then urges the party onward towards the southeast door where the noise had come from.
Theodore and Olyn move towards the door, preparing for action.
As you get closer, you all begin to hear something moving about in the room. It sounds as if its searching for something.
The three warriors from Dirt City grip their weapons tight and exchange nervous glances with each other.
Oni Wednesday November 8th, 2006 11:18:13 PM
Oni continues his vigilance of the rear guard. Not yet hearing exactly what the others do, he keeps an eye on the bears.
Vorelle d20+19=23 Thursday November 9th, 2006 12:05:28 AM
Looking up from the tracks, Vorelle nods and points toward the same southeastern door the noise is coming from.
Bow in hand, she moves cautiously through the doorway.
[Move Silently 23]
Olyn Thursday November 9th, 2006 1:46:08 AM
Looks to the rear and seeing the 3 DC lads exchanging worried looks with each other I move back with them.
You gentleman mind if I join you back here, Id feel safer if I had you around me.
Rose Thursday November 9th, 2006 5:56:04 AM
Piper orders the bear near the front of the group where it can do some good
Rose also moves forward.
Dietrich AC 20 HP 67/71 Thursday November 9th, 2006 6:38:23 AM
Dietrich too makes ready at the door, longbow prepared to fire. He doesn´t move, so as not to make too much noise, and waits for Vorelle to open the door.
The warrior whispers to Theo and Berlon: "Remember, don´t waste your magic. Only if there´s a really strong target behind that door, if not, just fire your crossbows!"
Vauhwyt (AC17, HP54 of 57, Grapple DC25) and Mookie (AC18, HP28) and Bear (AC13, HP12 of 19) Thursday November 9th, 2006 3:29:16 PM
Vauhwyt lets the bears stand in front of her, then she waits with her spear for Vorelle to open te door. Or if she does not want to, Vauhwyt will push it open with her longspear.
Theodore & Macaw HP 29/29 AC 17 (mage armor, dodge) Thursday November 9th, 2006 7:37:57 PM
Theodore, all ready to wow his friends with feats of magic, slouches when Dietrich gives him the good advice to save his magic. Sighing, he moves back to let those better skilled with weapons forward and draw his own quarterstaff.
DM Shegger Thursday November 9th, 2006 9:13:55 PM
Everyone prepares to jump into battle. Olyn notices the newbies are experiencing some anxiety and drops back to console them.
Letting the two bears take the front, Vauhwyt prods the door open with her spear and finds exactly what everyone was expecting.
The room appears to be the pantry, about twenty feet by twenty feet. Rotted wooden shelves dominate the room. The two zombies from the hall are pawing at the wall. It seems they are trying to keep going but have reached a dead end.
When the door creaks open, the deaders turn to look and let out a deep voiced hiss before trying to push themselves up against the northeast corner of the room.
(OOC - Only the two bears and Vauhwyt are close enough to move and attack in the same round with a melee weapon. Everyone else who wants to attack must move into the room and fire a missile weapon, or just southwest of the entrance and fire a shot.)
(OOC - Good map, Vauhwyt. There's one other door in the north wall of the kitchen. Also, the kitchen extends further south, 15' shorter than the hall.)
Berlon - Eagles Splendor 68r Thursday November 9th, 2006 9:24:40 PM
Berlon moves into the room, crossbow at the ready.
Noticing the undead's action, he comments, "Unholy spawn are always the best at locating secret doors."
He awaits the word to fire...

"How can such things be allowed to exist?"
