DM Kathy Sunday November 5th, 2006 11:05:00 PM Fosco helps the injured elf to his feet and hustles him away from the tragic scene. The elf goes willingly, obviously still bewildered by his recent encounter.
Any uses his limited magic to heal his companions, then tackles the problem of what is to be done with two great bear carcasses.
Arminas sends Ewan aloft and begins to help with the bears. He offers to track them back to their point of origin if the others choose.
Harvest assesses the health of her companions--who are all, at least, able to walk even if all their hurts are not healed. She then moves to the dead elf, still lying on the grass where she was attacked.
Bralin casts more healing spells on himself and his companions, and expresses support for the idea of tracking the bears.
Davros wonders aloud about the bears' behavior, which does seem odd. Bears have ben known to attack people if the people encroach on their territory, but you have been here for a week. Bears will attack people if driven by hunger, but it is high summer. What caused this attack?
You begin cutting up the bears, and the elves help you willingly. "We'll never eat the fresh meat before it spoils in the heat," sighs Tahlala. "We'll need to dry much of it. We'll get started putting together drying racks."
In examining the stomach contents, you see that these bears have eaten a little bit of everything. You find berries, leaves, fish, small animals. It seems a typical diet for omnivores this time of year. You find no signs that the bears have been systematically eating humanoids.
The elves decline to eat horse-meat, and suggest that Granite can be buried or cremated. A somber delegation begins preparing the fallen elf for her burial.

Lorth goes with Harvest as asked. When he gets there he takes a moment to offer a prayer to Gargul. "Gargul, you have seen fit to call this one home, speed his way upon the river and rejoin his soul with his loved ones that have gone before him." Lorth then helps Harvest wrap and move the body.
Any Monday November 6th, 2006 7:59:53 AM
Once the chore of butchering the animals is finished, Any rises and goes to the nearby stream to clean up.
Returning to the camp, he approaches Bralin,
"Do you still feel we should track these bears? If so, we should do it now while the tracks are fresh. There is still enough daylight to put us quite a distance along the trail. We cannot leave the elves unguarded. Who should we ask to remain here while we go?"
Harvest Monday November 6th, 2006 8:18:04 AM
"Do you mean to say that someone had possibly sent these bears to their death, Davros Sapphiredge?" After returning to the camp with paladin Lorth and the body of the fallen elf, Harvest pursues the disturbing question. "If that is so, then they could not expect these two bears alone to slay all of the elves. It could not have been but a warning."
"And, whoever it may have been surely sent these bears out knowing that it was to their deaths." The small brown girl frowns.
Arminas d20+7=10 Monday November 6th, 2006 9:54:47 AM
While the bears are being slaughtered, Arminas looks to see if they are mature bears or cubs, as well as their sex. (knowledge nature 10, take 20)
Looking up, he sees Ewan flying in circles high above the group. Arminas calls up to her.
Fly wide circles, warn of large predators.
The decline of the horse meat is not too surprising, though Arminas does say:
"Horse meat will provide food in an emergency. I have eaten many things that seem strange, yet they kept me alive. The forest though looks like it will provide."
Arminas wanders about a bit, and then walks up to Bralin.
"What shall we do?"
He keeps it short, he is learning the dwarves preferences for communication.

Florin slips from the saddle and checks on Ajax now while listening to what is being said and done.
Davros Monday November 6th, 2006 4:08:35 PM
"To answer you question Harvest, I would say it seems possible. The situation is odd and it involves the protection of the elves. When you put the two together, I believe that an investigation is warranted."
"If the tracks are to be followed, then it should be now. Should some of us stay behind?"
"I dislike dividing our force," he replies. "Tis possible the bears were sent to draw us away from the elves....."
The dwarf considers some more.
"Tis unlikely," he states at last. "Such a strategy would require much scouting by an enemy. We are diligent on our patrols. We would have seen some sign."
"We should all follow the bear sign," he finishes, and looks to Any to see if he agrees.
DM Kathy Monday November 6th, 2006 10:52:48 PM Arminas examines the bears. He finds that they are the large, savage variety that are called "Dire." Both are female; one young, one middle-aged.
The elves take possession of their fallen companion and begin preparing her for her funeral. Other elves begin hastily constructing drying racks on which the bear meat can be preserved.
Tahlela wanders close enough to your group to hear what you are discussing. "If you want to take an hour or two to backtrack the beasts," she says, "my hunters and I can keep watch here. Don't be gone too long, though."
Lorth Tuesday November 7th, 2006 7:44:50 AM

Any nods as each party member adds his opinion,
"I agree friend Bralin, and as the elves also agree, let us follow this track as a group. We need to put to rest the suggestion Davros has made. If these two bears were a random event, the incident should be over. But if someone sent them, we need to find out why. Let's make preparations quickly and be on the trail a soon as we can. I am ready to leave as quickly as I pick up my pack."
Any matches actions to words, and retrieves his pack from the camp. He draws his quarterstaff from his quiver, its length seeming to come endlessly out of that short sheath, and then awaits the others.

"If you are comfortable enough with our common tongue, then perhaps everyone will be more relaxed if we use it. Do you have a name? Perhaps we could even arrange a meeting between the town's elders and yourself? I'm sure the elves would be very pleased to meet you."

"I not well your tongue to speak," he says in oddly-accented Common. "To understand, yes! No to speak. I glad to meet you."
Switching to Sylvan, he adds: "But where are my manners? Some of you cannot even see me!"
With that, he steps out of his hiding-place so that you can all see him--a strange creature, part man, part grasshopper.
"You may call me Larkspur," he continues in Sylvan. "That is one of my names." He turns to Any "Dire bears? Truly? I did not know dire bears ventured so far from the Culverwood. How unusual."
"I want to see the settlement for myself," he tells Davros with a broad grin. "The folk of the Culverwood have heard about it, and wonder what kind of neighbors these elves will be. I came to see with my own eyes." Thoughtfully, he continues, "Although if some of the elders wanted to speak with me I would be happy to."
"And what of you?" he asks. "You are not elves--at least, most of you are not. Will you be living in the new village, too? We had heard it was to be only elves."

Then her smile turns to a look of concern, and she turns her gaze ahead in the direction from which the bears had come.

"I too am curious about the intentions of the Dire Bears, and will look more carefully at the tracks to discern possible intentions. Any, why do you trust Larkspur so? I myself think he may not want development in the forest, and may himself have sent the bears. I do not trust coincidence, and it is too convienent to find him along the path of the bears. Resolved to continue, you track the bears for another hour and more, all the way into the Culverwood itself. Looking at the tracks, Arminas would describe their movement as more or less purposeful, given the limitations of animal intelligence.
You finally reach a spot about five minutes' walk inside the Culverwood. There the tracks diverge; apparently the bears arrived at this spot from two different directions.

I feel we should return. If for no other reason than to check on the village before we decide on a further course. What do you all say?"
Any waits and listens.
Arminas d20+17=18 d20+17=24 Wednesday November 15th, 2006 10:12:15 AM
Arminas looks about at the deep forest of the Culverwood and at the bears trails.
"Please, do not walk about and disturb the tracks. Where the bears came from is not important. What is important is whose tracks we find here where the bears converged. That will provide a clue as to who sent the bears. Then I agree, we should hurry back to the village."
Arminas then very carefully looks about for tracks, however faint in the area that coincides with the bear tracks.

Again they have come to the Culverwoods, and again the stories whisper in her mind. The paths that always change. No way is ever the same.
"I think we should return, Anthos," she replies. "It would be unwise to enter the Culverwood without greater preparation." The brown girl backs away as through from a dangerous animal.
"I found Larkspur to be very sincere in his manner, Arminas Calaelen. Though, as you say, the coincidence makes for suspicion."
"There is the tale of a keeper of pigeons, Little Boo, who found the bodies of two hawks torn and bloody upon the road. He surmised that they had encountered each other and fought a great battle for dominion of the airs above. Feeling that his birds were now, no doubt safe, he released them into the air. A great eagle promptly launched itself into the air and decimated the man's flock."
"And yet, I think, that to take what one can see as the only things that act within the Wold may be a mistake." Harvest continues to back away from the tree line. "Do you think it possible, that if the bears were sent, that it may have been the forest itself that might have sent them?"
Arminas - 2nd post Wednesday November 15th, 2006 2:17:37 PM
Harvest looks up from tracking as Harvest asks her question.
"I did not think that the Culverwood itself could do such a thing, yet much has changed since the Fae King has returned. I agree though that we need to beware what I believe the dwarves call 'tunnel vision'. Though danger is also present in assuming that those who appear innocent are actually so."
Arminas continues looking about carefully.

Florin Jadenth Wednesday November 15th, 2006 9:32:04 PM
Florin nods in agreement on returning and thinks it's funny that the two bears moved to meet each other from the looks in this spot before heading towards the village. More needs to be looked into this but right now isn't the time, not to mention if it's something or someone not wanting the town to be made or something they will surely try to stop it yet again.

DM Kathy Thursday November 16th, 2006 12:41:08 AM Arminas looks very carefully for any other tracks. He finds deer, badger, and squirrel tracks, all several days older than the bear tracks. He does not find any tracks that look like they were here at the same time as the bears.

With that in mind, you begin moving back toward the settlement. Luckily, your journey is uneventful. You reach the site late in the afternoon, and are greeted by some relieved-looking elves.
"We were worried something had happened to you," says one of Tahlela's hunters.

Lorth is releived to be back at the village. The culverwood always makes him edgy ever since the tower adventure.
Any Thursday November 16th, 2006 8:44:36 AM
Any relates to the village elders the results of their tracking, and asks about the creature called Larkspur.
"Did this creature present himself to you, or do you know of such a creature in the forest?"
He is wondering if they did the right thing pointing the way towards the village.
"What would you have us do concerning the bears? Should we send a party to track them further, or leave this occurrence for now?"
Turning to the rest of the group, he also asks their opinion.
Harvest d20+14=30 Thursday November 16th, 2006 9:41:04 AM
It is surprising. Not to find Larkspur here to greet the group as well as the small party of elves. Harvest Moon looks about for the tiny creature. Surely the few children with the encampment of elves would find him enchanting.
"I do not think that there is anything that we can do for now, Anthos," she replies as she holds a hand to shade her eyes and looks out and about the camp. "Aside from increasing our watchfulness. We know little about who or what may have sent the bears save the fact alone that they were indeed sent and that they were drawn from the Culverwood."
"Perhaps if one of us were to return to Jarlwolf and return with Green Mage Grynntym. The Culverwood is his domain, and if there is a force using its creatures against us, I think that he would be concerned."
"Paladin Lorth, or perhaps Paladin Florin might right back quickly upon their magic steed and then return."
Arminas d20+8=20 Thursday November 16th, 2006 10:11:04 AM
Arminas looks carefully about at the tracks, and frowns as he finds no tracks other than normal forest creatures.
"As I have said, I do not trust coincidence, yet we have twice encountered it. First, we find Larkspur along the trail of the bears. Second, we have two dire bears coming from opposite directions that join together and head straight for the elven village. I have spent many years tracking creatures in the forest. The only creature that walks upon the land that is impossible to track is a druid. Either Larkspur is a druid or there is another about. Let us hurry back to the village and speak with Larkspur furthur."
Upon reaching the village, he tells the hunters of what he has seen.
"...and two great bears came together in the Culverwood and headed straight here. I believe they were sent. We should strengthen our watch. Tell me, has a small insect like person named Larkspur presented himself in our absence?"

If you decide then me and Lorth can head out and return. I believe with the elven archers here and the remainder of the group would beable to keep safe watch till we returned."
Florin looks to Bralin, "What do you think Bralin? Would it be best to get Grynntym and return?"
Bralin Thursday November 16th, 2006 9:34:20 PM
Bralin shakes his head in answer to Florin.
"I know not. Druids, elves, forests - I have no experience with such things. Any and Arminas possess the knowledge we require. Let us follow where they lead."
DM Kathy Friday November 17th, 2006 12:38:36 AM
Returning to the settlement, you ask after Larkspur. The elves break into smiles. "Yes, he is still here," says one of the elves.
"Makes me feel quite nostalgic," says another. "I haven't spoken to a grig since before we left the Culverwood."
If you ask, they can lead you to where Larkspur is happily climbing over one of the newly-constructed tree homes. When he sees you, he calls a greeting in his own language. "I very much like town!" he adds in his uniquely-accented Common.
When told of the bears, the elders look concerned. "It does seem unlikely that such creatures would have come all this way on their own," says Tahlela. "Especially at this time of year, when food is so abundantly available. We should double the watch."
"More than that," says Firon. "We need to be very careful about straying too far from the group. Your hunters may need to stop hunting for a while."
"Those who were attacked were farmers," Sivaine points out. "They weren't all that far away. I don't know if it's possible to stay close enough to avoid any possible disaster."
"And hunting is the best way we have of feeding ourselves," Tahlela says. "The crops will take time."
Firon sighs. "I see your point. But hunting parties should be as large as possible. No need to borrow trouble."
"Grynntym did say he'd come by and check on things," says Sivaine. "When he comes, we will consult with him."
Lorth Friday November 17th, 2006 7:58:21 AM
"I would be more than willing to head to Jawlswolf and return with the Green Mage if that is what you think should be done. He will depart the next morning if it is deemed that this is the plan to be taken.
Any d20+9=14 d20+10=12 Friday November 17th, 2006 8:46:20 AM
"Finding the Greenmage, especially if he is in the Culverwood, would prove a difficult task. I am not sure if even Arminas could folow that track. If he said he would check in on the progress here, that may be the best we can do.
Untill then, our best hope will be to increase the watch on the village, and hope that we can stop anything else that is SENT in our direction."
Any is relieved that the elves know what Larkspur is--a grig, something to remember. He smiles at the antics of the small creature as it scurries about the village. However, taking into account Arminas' warning about a Druid possibly being involved, he again worries that Larkspur is not here by accident. He conveys this concern to Harvest in a whispered conversation.

She sighs. And then she taps her cheek with a finger as she turns to look at the fields.
"When you go about any activity," Harvest suggests, "foraging or farming, gathering water, anything, there should be those who do and those who watch. If some of us had accompanied those who had gone to farm the land ... " Harvest Moon's voice drops away. " ... it is possible that no one would have died."
"He seems very sincere, Anthos." Harvest puts a hand to his arm and tips her face up to his. "I have watched him, and I have seen no intent to do harm within him. It is difficult, though, to know what might be done through the power of magics." Harvest considers the things that she knows of druidic abilities. (Knowledge Religion 21) "It may be that Larkspur has been enchanted. Perhaps if we approached him with our concerns and asked if he would mind a small examination," she suggests. "If he is forthright, then I do not think he will mind. Davros Sapphiredge might examine him for magics, and if there is an aura of Enchantment about him, then we will all know. Larkspur as well."
Fosco Friday November 17th, 2006 10:37:09 AM
Speaking to Any and Harvest and whoever might be listening. Our job is to protect this extremely large contingent of elves. And they have some skill in combat I am sure. Would it not be prudent then to do our job of protecting these people by finding out why these creatures who should not be delving here are here and find a way of stopping it rather than having these people scared and possibly hurt or killed by more attacks? They could send out a large hunting party every day while a second hunting party takes up positions around this developing community for protection while we go out and do what we do best.
Davros d20+6=11 d20+6=11 Friday November 17th, 2006 4:05:24 PM
"If a druid or druids are involved, then perhaps they can be negotiated with. After all the elves are much more in harmony with the land than many other races would be and would probably be considered allies by most druids. In fact it may not be a bad idea to send an official emmissary from the elders out to make contact with the local population with ourselves as escort. I'm sure Larkspur could point us in the right direction."

Florin looks to Bralin, just offering his suggestion of the group going out with the hunting team, "Is the town decently fortified for the small time we would be out though."
Arminas Saturday November 18th, 2006 9:43:01 PM
Arminas' talk with the hunters and elder elves has solved some problems, yet the safety of the community is still in question.
"Yes, we will double the guard. Grynntym's visit and council is of dire importance though. I will send a messenger for him tomorrow. Until then, I do not believe we will find out enough by following tracks. If a druid sent the bears, I will not be able to track him. We will stay and defend for now. I would however have another talk with Larkspur."
Arminas asks Harvest to go with him, for a visit with Larkspur.
"Larkspur, I hope you have enjoyed the elven hospitality. It is a shame they had to relocate, yet they would have been enslaved by Parnoth if they had stayed in the Culverwood. Tell me, who is the druid watching over this forest? I think we need to discuss the proper way to keep the forest healthy. Elves as you know are very keen on working with the druids."
When they are done, he mentions to Harvest and Bralin that he plans on sending an animal messenger to find Grynntym in the morning.
DM Kathy Sunday November 19th, 2006 11:47:41 PM
You continue to discuss the attacks and what is to be done. You agree that Grynntym's wisdom would be invaluable, but unfortunately you have no way to reach him. You may just have to wait until he decides to visit.
Harvest gives some thought to what types of spells Druids can cast, and comes to the conclusion that they don't have any spells likely to enchant a sentient creature such as Larkspur. Druidic spells tend to deal with animals, plants, and natural forces.
Arminas goes to speak with Larkspur.
"The druid watching over this forest?" the little man echoes in Sylvan. He snorts. "Not much of a forest, if you ask me. I don't know who watches over this land; it is farther from the Culverwood than I usually travel. Probably one of you big folk. Or maybe there's no druid here at all."
He looks thoughtful at the story of the elves' plight. "Parnoth!" he exclaims with a shudder. "I'm glad I don't live in that part of the Culverwood. And I'm glad these elves were able to escape." Bright-eyed, he looks around at the settlement. "I think it will be fun to have such neighbors!"
Lorth Monday November 20th, 2006 8:07:17 AM
Lorth climbs off of Tobiasz gives him a quick rubdown then dismisses him for the day. He stays near the rest of his companions while they discuss their options but adds nothing to the conversation.
Any Monday November 20th, 2006 8:47:46 AM
Any is unsure what the party should do. His inclination is to seek out the person responsible for the attack, as it seems clear now that it was not a random event. However, they have also been charged with guarding the elves, and if they leave, they will be leaving that portion of their assignment.
If only their was a third option, a way to fulfill both aspects.
For now, he continues to watch over the elves as they build, help where he can, and tries to think of what should be done.
Harvest Monday November 20th, 2006 10:53:21 AM
"I am not certain what it is that we can do, Fosco Loamsdown." Harvest Moon blows out a puff of breath to clear the crest of hair from one eye. The act speaks also of the frustration of facing an invisible enemy. "We could enter the Culverwood. But where in the wood would be go?"
Harvest reaches into her pouch to draw forth a leaf.
"Wear this leaf at all times, and stay together. The Culverwood is no ordinary forest. It has a mind of its own and it does not tolerate outsiders. This leaf will provide you with safe passage as long as you stay together. As long as this leaf is green you will be under my protection, but heed me well, keep your fires small, burn only dead wood from the ground, and do no harm to the forest."
Those had been Grynntym's words when they had left him after rescuing the greenmage from his imprisonment within the tree. But would it protect them now? And would the leaves protect Fosco Loamsdown and Davros Sapphiredge who do not possess one?
"I do not think we should leave the elves for now," Harvest Moon continues. "I think it would be unwise to strike out without greater knowledge of what opposes us or where it may lie."
She seats herself upon the ground with Larkspur, and she speaks with him more fully with him about the attack that had occurred, the trail of the bears and where it had lead.
"Do you see our need, Larkspur?" she asks. "Can you think of a way in which you could help us and the elves to find a way to common understanding with whatever might have sent those bears?"
Davros Monday November 20th, 2006 4:24:55 PM
"I would like to offer the following suggestion."
"In my studies of war, I have found that many tactics can prove useful. I know that we are not at war with this 'unseen force' but the underlying reasoning is the same. Perhaps he/she/it or 'they' sent the bears as a 'test' of our abilities or of the defenses of the new town. They may also have wished to see our reaction. If we storm out looking to start trouble and fight, then they may see the elven settlement as a hostile neighbor."
"My proposal therefore is this: we should do nothing. Let's bolster the hunting parties with one or two of our own. Let's increase the guard and continue our patrols, but otherwise do nothing."
For the party members only- and especially out of listening range of Larkspur: "I would like to remind everyone that even though fey creatures are not usually evil, they are frequently mischievous."
Florin Jadenth Monday November 20th, 2006 7:42:44 PM
Florin looks to the others and nods as he agrees with the doubling the guard and such and speaks up also, "When do the hunters go out? If possible I would like to go out with them, just to look around and be more of a guard really. I have some meager tracking skills."

Arminas walks about outside. Finding Bralin, he says:
"We need to increase the watch. Ewan will help, but I think I would like to ask other birds to help also. Perhaps an owl or two will help us during the night. I will go now and look for allies in the trees."
Arminas will go and look about for an owl.
'Ewan, have you seen the night fliers about?'
If he finds an owl, he will cast charm animal and speak with animals. He will ask it to help by alerting them if danger comes.
DM Kathy Monday November 20th, 2006 11:56:13 PM Harvest speaks further with Larkspur. "I can talk to the druids," the little fellow says. "I don't know if there's one here, but I can talk to druids back in the Culverwood. Maybe one of them has seen something, or knows something."

Harvest sees that the creature is a centaur and leaps to her feet. [OOC: it's been three days since your conversation with Larkspur; the little grig has long since left camp. However, you can ask your questions of the elves.]
"I've seen centaurs before," one elf man says. "They are not common, but there are some in the Culverwood. Perhaps that's where this one comes from."
Arminas asks Ewan if there is anything else with the centaur, and gets a very bored negative in response. There is nobody approaching but the centaur, and the centaur, Ewan makes clear, is not very interesting.
As he gets closer, everyone can make out that the person is a centaur and not a man on a horse. His horse half is a rich brown color, with a darker brown tail. His hair is the same dark brown, long, tied back in a queue. He wears leather armor on his torso, and there is a brace of spears crossed on his back. Approaching the settlement, he raises one hand in greeting, opening the other to show it is empty.
"Hello!" he calls in Common. "I am Bryn of the Culverwood. May I approach?"
Cautious but curious, the sentries give him leave to approach their position. When he gets to where he can speak in a normal tone and be heard, the centaur speaks again.
"Greetings. My name, as I said, is Bryn, and I am a druid of the Culverwood," he begins. "The other day I ran into an acquaintance of mine, and he mentioned that you might be interested in talking to some of the druids in the area."
He smiles, "And I must admit, I've been curious about this place since I heard of it. So I've come to satisfy my curiosity--and perhaps yours as well.
"I also bring word of one whom I believe you are seeking," he adds. "I saw Grynntym the Greenmage about five days ago. At that time, he was heading deeper into the Culverwood, and planned to stop by here on his way back to Jarlwolf. He should be stopping by in the next day or two."

"It is an honor to meet you. As the young lady has mentioned, I am Arminas Calaelen. I am from the Culverwood just South of Merrydale. It was I who tracked the bears back from where they came. Two dire bears came from opposite directions, met up within the Culverwood and headed straight here. They killed an elf and were themselves killed. It is a tragic loss, to both the forest and to this village. As was mentioned, this matter has brought great confusion to this village. Grynntym himself has agreed to this settlement, yet someone has summoned the bears against these elves. Whomever did so, did not leave tracks."
Florin Jadenth Wednesday November 22nd, 2006 8:34:17 PM

"Greetings Bryn, Davros says with a bow. My companions have already asked you about the bears, I would like to ask - How do you feel about this settlement? These elves seek only peace and harmony with their new neighbors. Is their settlement accepted by your people?"
DM Kathy Thursday November 23rd, 2006 2:00:22 AM
Bryn greets you all cordially. To Any's questions, he replies, "There are many druids in the Culverwood. I know some of them, of course, but not all. None of the ones I know are capable of such an act. At least," he adds, a troubled frown crossing his face, "I hope not. As for this area, it is farther from my home than I usually go. If there is a druid here, I do not know them."
Both Bralin and Any get the idea that Bryn is sincere and worried.
"Larkspur is a name he uses," Bryn replies to Harvest with a little smile. "He was quite enthusiastic about this settlement, and very persistent in his efforts to get help for the elves here." He turned to Davros "I'm not sure what you mean by 'my people'," he says. "Both centaurs and druids tend to go their own way, rather than making decisions as groups. But this land is several hours' walk from the Culverwood itself, and the elves clearly plan to live in harmony with Nature. I can't conceive of anyone truly objecting."
Bryn listens intently to Arminas's report. "That does sound like a druid," he says unhappily. "We can command animals, and even minimally experienced druids can move without leaving tracks. But I can't conceive of who it might be."
Fosco, less troubled by the mystery of the bears than the demands of his appetite, visits the cookfires and volunteers himself as a taster. The elven cooks smile and offer up their dishes. "If we can please a halfling," one woman says with a smile, "then we know we've got a meal worth serving!"

Harvest Thursday November 23rd, 2006 11:15:13 AM
"It is comforting to know that the elves here have another friend in you, Bryn of the Culverwood." Harvest puts her hand into Any's. An act of tenderness amid the questioning and the dire memory of the attack of some three days ago.
"Have you eaten, Bryn of the Culverwood? Would you stay for a while? Your aide and knowledge would be greatly appreciated as we work to solve this mystery, but I don't think it need be at the expense of hospitality."
"Do you think that a greater power may have directed the bears against the elves?" she asks. "It concerns me that the bears seemed drawn from separate directions before sent here. Do you have any idea what might have the power to do that?"
Any Thursday November 23rd, 2006 6:39:21 PM
Any smiles as Harvest invites Bryn to eat with the group. He is satisfied as to Bryn's explanation of himself, and relaxes somewhat as they continue to talk.
"Any suggestions that you might make to help us secure the area for the elves while they build would be appreciated. Perhaps the elders could use some help in transplanting berries, or trees to areas where they would grow well near the vilage. Any help that you might offer would be appreciated."
He will returns to helping around the camp, unless Bryn has more to tell them.
Davros Thursday November 23rd, 2006 7:59:54 PM
"Bryn, perhaps the elders would be interested in making a formal meeting with their various new neighbors. Who would you suggest they introduce themselves to?"
"I would also be pleased to learn any lore of the area or of the natural wold that you would be willing to teach us."
Lorth Friday November 24th, 2006 7:39:39 AM
Lorth rides Tobiasz around the perimeter of the village outskirts for the rest of the day. He keeps an eye out, and gets comfortable with the trails and views of the area. He heads back to find something to eat after dinnertime.
Arminas d20+6=18 Friday November 24th, 2006 4:22:12 PM
Arminas nods at Bryn's explanation that a druid is most likely involved.
"Yes, I could see no other explanation. I know the druids wander alone, and in their own way protect the land. Perhaps this druid has the mistaken idea these elves mean to harm the land. Is it possible for the Archdruid to call a council and resolve this? We have sworn to protect these elves, at the cost of our own or others lives. Already too many have died."
Looking over at the supper being cooked, he adds:
"Forgive me for being impulsive. As Harvest says, we should eat first and think upon a solution."
Looking up to see Ewan flying high, Arminas conveys:

Florin is happy Bryn seems to be of a nice nature and from the looks he really wants to help so he lets his guard down some and puts his longsword away.
Florin will offer to take a ride around the camp with him. Calling Ajax and letting his warhorse stretch his legs as he rides with his fellow paladin friend. Before heading back to the camp Florin thinks and grins, "Why don't we let these two stretch their legs abit more. Not a race but let's pick up the pace back to the village, what do you say? Inless you want a small race."
Florin will spur Ajax to a faster gallop inless it becomes a actual race. (Ride:21)
After he gets back to camp Florin goes about getting something to eat and spends abit of time flirting with the elven ladies who might be around the eating area. (Don't know if I needed these checks but Cha:7 Wow, bad roll and Diplomacy:17)
DM Kathy Sunday November 26th, 2006 10:59:23 PM
Knowning where his priorities lie, Fosco settles down to taste the evening meal. It isn't bad, for elvish food. Too many leaves and things, and not enough gravy, but the flavors are excellent.
Harvest's suggestion is seconded by the elves, and Bryn graciously accepts. With the elves leading the way, he heads toward the cook-fires, answering questions as he goes.
"A druid would have the power to command animals in such a way," he replies to Harvest. "Or a very experienced ranger. Arcanists, I believe, would be more likely to summon such creatures from another plane entirely, so you wouldn't expect to see their tracks leading up to the site of the attack."
He smiles at Any's suggestions. "A good thought," he says, "although summer is a poor time to transplant. I would be happy to return in the autumn, though, and assist the elves with such a project."
To Arminas he replies, "We don't really have an Archdruid, though all respect Grynntym. Perhaps he would be able to talk to druids in the area."
Florin and Lorth exercise their mounts for a bit before joining the elves for the evening meal. Florin takes the opportunity to do a little judicious flirting, and is rewarded with smiles from several young ladies, and frowns from a couple of fathers. "It is unusual to see such a big, strong elf," one of the women murmurs as she slices you a piece of bread. She smiles a little. "From a distance, you almost look like a human!"
[OOC: Florin, are you still wearing Ivy's red ribbon?]
The evening meal is companionable, though there is still tension from recent events. Bryn asks the elves about their progress in building the town, and in return has a few suggestions about how to stay in harmony with the natural balance of the area. On the whole, however, he is impressed with the elves' plans and says so.
The sun sets, and Bryn asks and is given permission to stay the night before heading back to the Culverwood in the morning. The night passes uneventfully.
Any Monday November 27th, 2006 8:40:33 AM
Any seems to be everywhere, trying to help the elves in various tasks. The Half-elf is interested in every aspect of the building, learning from the elven craftsman.
He also takes spare moments during the day to practice his skill at arms, trying to improve his fighting technique. As part of this he asks Bralin and the two paladins advice on different situations, striving to learn tricks and strategies for combat.
In spite of all of this, he finds time to point out a unique flower he found to Harvest, and show her then den of a fox he found not far from the camp, enjoying what little quiet time they can find.
Lorth Monday November 27th, 2006 8:44:59 AM
The next morning Lorth does what is turning into his daily routine. He gets his gear ready, summons Tobiasz and heads out to watch the edges of the village. He returns around noontime makes a report and gets a bite to eat, then sets out again until dinner. Only something out of the ordinary will change this.

The visit from the centaur appears nothing more than a query from a curious neighbor. Or it may be a clandestine scouting trip. Bralin doesn't know, and he won't be able to figure it out. Therefore, the dwarf doesn't worry about it.
Like Lorth, he falls back into his routine. Any asks for some pointers in melee combat, and Bralin is happy to oblige.
The rest of his free time is spent back in the company of the stone facade he is carving.
Harvest d20+14=24 d20+14=15 Monday November 27th, 2006 11:17:43 AM
Life amongst the elves is seductive. There is such peace and joy in such a community. There is time for the little joys. Harvest walks the edge of the camp, flower in hand. She smiles as she recalls waving the very same flower in the direction of the small pack of baby foxes as they had scampered back within their hole at the sharp bark of their watchful mother. And there had been the look in Anthos' eyes as she had turned her grin up to him after the funny little foxes had left nothing but the memory of their tails.
Such a life, full of family, in which a cozy room awaits one's return every day. A room much like the neat little attic in which Meg Thistleburr had lived. Such a life is so alluring. And yet such a life seems so very far away. For there would never be an end to the road for her. She had sworn to walk the Wold. In walking would she be able to bring such peace to the places that she will find. Such is the blessing of the Walker. And such is the Walker's curse, to never stay to live the life that they have brought.
"Is there no way that you can help us to find out who or what might have sent the bears to this camp, Bryn of the Culverwood?" Harvest Moon's own question of earlier that morning echoes within her head as she walks the edge of the camp, watching for danger. "Can you possibly speak with the animals or plants along the way, inquiring as to what they might have seen? Anything?"
"While this mystery remains," she had said, "the camp remains in danger. We must do everything in our power to ensure the safety of all who live here, and we would be grateful for any help that you may be able to provide."
Arminas Monday November 27th, 2006 7:15:41 PM
During the night, Arminas visits with his owl friend, again asking him to watch during the night. Upon an uneventful morning, Arminas goes out early with Ewan and hunts. When Ewan has successfully taken a rabbit, Arminas leaves him to feast.
Watch for me again this day.
Arminas goes back as the others begin their day. Harvest is speaking to Bryn, and Arminas joins in the conversation.
"I could speak with the animals, yet it may be difficult to find a witness. I had hoped to speak with the bears, but unfortunaltey we had to destroy them before I had the chance. Plants though may still remember. Bryn, can you inquire of them who sent the bears?"
Arminas finishes listening to the conversation between Harvest and Bryn, then adds:
"Perhaps you could help the elves build a safety net. If snares were formed in such a way that the elves could run a safe path through them, their pursuers may be trapped. Could you help us build and design such a system?"

(OOC:Florin still wears Ivy's ribbon.)
Florin looks to the father's who are frowning and smiles softly as he is flirting yes but harmless stuff as he is only seeking the coversation company and such, he would never dishonor Ivy by seeking more. He might not be really spoken for but he did have his honor.
He smiles and looks to the elven lady who speaks to him, "Yes, well, there are some odd reasons behind that that would probably be a shock but let's just say I enjoy good healthy training and it keeps me in shape." He smiles and takes the piece of bread and nods to the elven maiden, "Would you honor me with some company while I eat miss? I wouldn't mind your family joining us either, I have not had the chance to speak to other elves much and it would be a honor to use the elven language for awhile." Florin keeps his diplomatic ways up and if the elven maiden agrees he greets the lady's parents to with a gentle bow and a hello, trying to make sure it is known his actions were purely innocent.
Davros Monday November 27th, 2006 10:19:29 PM
Davros begins to spend some of his spare time practicing his herbal lore. Looking for rare plants and teaching any elves who seem interested a few herbal remedies with which they may be unfamiliar.
DM Kathy Monday November 27th, 2006 11:59:54 PM
With a pleasant combination of work, practice, vigilence, conversation, and fellowship, you spend another couple of days with the elves.
Bryn agrees to speak to animals and plants to try to find out what happened. He will suggest the same to any other druids and folk of the forest he happens to meet.
Two days after Bryn leaves the settlement, Grynntym arrives. Several of the younger elves rush to greet him, calling his name, and "Greenmage!" in their own tongue and in Common. He is ushered to a place of honor near the fire.
"I have heard of your recent troubles," he tells the elves, his voice low and sympathetic. "Allow me to offer my condolences on your loss.
"I have looked in the Culverwood," he says. "It is hard to say for certain, because the forest itself has changed since the Fae King's awakening. But I think perhaps there is something...new...in the part of the Culverwood nearest to this settlement. I have no evidence to support this, only the general feel of the forest. Nevertheless, I would caution all of you to remain on your guard."
Lorth Tuesday November 28th, 2006 7:51:49 AM
Lorth makes sure he is at the fire to listen to what the Greenmage has to say. After listening, he waits for his companion's comments.
Any Tuesday November 28th, 2006 8:45:39 AM
Any listens while the Greenmage tells of a disturbance he feels in the forest, which is near to the elf village.
"Is this feeling, or disturbance, something that we should investigate, or can you do that? Our problem remains that we cannot leave the village unprotected untill it is finished. Perhaps we could send to town asking to borrow a few guards, allowing us the time to check this anomaly out. What do you think?"
He will then await the response of Gryntym and the others.
Harvest d20+14=33 d20+14=24 Tuesday November 28th, 2006 9:44:52 AM
In the days after the centaur Bryn leaves, Harvest continues to patrol the edges of the settlement. As day passes on to day, she finds her eyes drawn increasingly to the horizon and the paths that lead there.
"Are Thadius and Thalpius well?" Harvest asks the Greenmage when he appears. "Are they behaving themselves?"
Aside from this, she remains quiet at Anthos' side.
Bralin Tuesday November 28th, 2006 1:23:16 PM
The dwarf spends his time either standing guard or working his stone. It is becoming quite good, he decides.
The Greenmage arrives, and Bralin dutifully trots over to hear his cousel. He frowns at the druid's report. "New" is change. Change is bad. The warrior considers the situation for several minutes.
After careful consideration, he turns to Any. "We have remained here several days with no incident. Tis probable that further days will bring the same. I say we go to the source. Enter Culverwood and seek out this 'newness'." Bralin looks over at Gryntym. "Mayhap you can abide here a few days while we search?"
Arminas Tuesday November 28th, 2006 2:30:08 PM
Arminas listens to the council of Gryntym, and then becomes deeply concerned about the warning of a 'new' element in the Culverwood.
"The Culverwood has always been something ancient, something that one could count on. I agree with Bralin."
He shakes his head at his own words.
"This newness, if it threatens the Culverwood or these elves it must be found out. I do not know if it is bad or not, but I will gladly lead an expedition into the Culverwood to find out."
Davros Tuesday November 28th, 2006 3:36:18 PM
"Grynntym, it is both an honor and a pleasure to meet you sir", Davros says with a bow and flourish.
"I agree that an investigation is in order. We need more information and there is only one way to get it. We are here for the elves protection, and we cannot protect them while "new" unknown things are going on in the forest. Maybe all it will take is to make contact and make clear the elves' intentions in this area."
Florin Jadenth Tuesday November 28th, 2006 6:35:41 PM
Florin smiles and offers his hand to Grynntym and nods to him, "It is nice to meet you sir."
Florin keeps his eyes and ears open for anything as he is hoping no problems spring up. He is glad for the slight peace the group and elves are getting at the moment and can only hope it lasts. A warrior of a god might be trained for battle but is just as happy with times of peace where no blood has to be shed.
DM Kathy Wednesday November 29th, 2006 12:11:12 AM
Grynntym returns your greetings. "I'm not sure the group of you could succeed where I failed," he replies to Any. "Whatever this new thing is, it seems unwilling to be found just yet. The druids are on alert, and perhaps in time we will know more."
"Thadius and Thelpus," he says with a smile for Harvest. "They are...they are behaving as well as can be expected. Certainly there has been no repeat of the type of incident that caused you so much distress."
"I will stay and watch if you like," he says to Bralin and Arminas, "although the thought makes me uneasy. Were not the days leading up to the bear attack also uneventful?"
"However," he continues, "we do not need to make that decision just now. Tonight is for good food and fellowship. In the morning light, I would tour this new town and see your progress."
The elves seem enthusiastic about this plan, and the rest of the evening is spent in feasting and celebration. Songs are sung, tales are told, and tunes are played as dancers whirl and dart among the cookfires. The impromptu feast under the stars lasts until late at night, but the elves are nevertheless rested and fresh the next morning as Grynntym begins his tour.

During one lively jig, he invites Harvest to join him in a dance among the elves, laughing and enjoying the evening.
When the festivities wind down, he lies down to rest for 2 hours, then rises to watch through the rest of the night, greeting the others at dawn, and accompanying the Greenmage on his tour of the town.
Who knows what new things time will bring this day?

Harvest Moon dances with Anthos. She claps in time to the music. It is a very pleasant and enjoyable evening.
When Harvest awakens the following morning, Anthos is already risen. She finds a place upon the bank of Windtree Creek on which to seat herself and pray. Afterwards, she wanders upstream to a secluded spot and strips off her clothing before wading into the cold water of the creek to wash.
Arminas Wednesday November 29th, 2006 10:53:20 AM
Arminas enjoys the food and festivities of the evening, taking part as much as possible to forget his worries. He has been with humans and dwarves too long, and had almost forgot how to experience the joy found in elven gatherings.
Late into the night, exhausted from singing and dancing he climbs a tree and settles into a notch besides Ewan. He goes into a dreamlike trance. Early in the morning he awakes, and goes on a hunt with Ewan.
When the group gathers for breakfast, he comments to them, but in particular to Bralin:
"Grynntym makes an important point. If he or the other druids could not find the source of this 'newness' in the Culverwood, I would stand a scant chance. If I lead us into the Culverwood, we will either not find anything or the thing will find us. If it finds us, it will not be to our advantage."
Bralin Wednesday November 29th, 2006 6:24:29 PM
The dwarf shrugs, "then let us remain."
Bralin decides tonight is a good night to follow Fosco's lead. He proceeds to display to elves, halflings, and humans alike just how much a dwarf can drink.
Turns out to be quite a lot......
Davros Wednesday November 29th, 2006 8:09:26 PM
Davros samples any variety of wines which may be available and finishes a meal. He enjoys the festivities but retires early. He wakes up at his normal time and studies his spellbooks before joining Grynntym on the tour.
DM Kathy Thursday November 30th, 2006 12:48:01 AM
The next morning, the elven elders take Grynntym on a tour of the new settlement. They show him the tree-homes, of which there are now several built. They show him the sentry posts, carefully hidden. They take him up to the fishing hole, and walk him past the newly-planted crops.
Grynntym seems pleased with what he sees, and offers both advice and praise. The tour ends at a large, steeply-sloping hill, where a group of elves has just begun to dig.
"We're borrowing a notion from the Halflings," says Firon with a smile. "If we can't put our Town Hall in a tree, we'll dig it into a hillside." He gestures toward the slope. "The sod will help keep the Hall cool in summer and warm in winter. We'll put windows in this south slope, and plenty of skylights."
Grynntym frowns. "Take care you do not dig too much," he says. "Soil can be washed away if diggers are too careless. I see it among the humans all the time."
Firon nods. "We will pay special attention to the grasses and plants that will cover the buildings. They must remain robust and firm of root." He gestures at the shape of the hill. "And see, we follow the natural contours of the land. The Hall will blend harmoniously, Greenmage, I will see to it."
Lorth Thursday November 30th, 2006 7:51:47 AM
Lorth doesn't go on the tour with the greenmage. He does his usual scouting of the outskirts instead.

Any accompanies the elves on the tour, and is pleased by the Greenmage's response.
Leaving the group at the end of the tour, he makes a circuit around the entire town, first on foot, then again a little further out, mounted on Moonshadow.
On returning to the village, he finds a suitable piece of wood from some deadfall, and sits down to carve. The wood he has chosen is a deep red cedar, and he stops occasionally, breathing in the scent of the wood, enjoying that as much as the work he is doing.

Disturbing memories fill the mind of Harvest Moon at the sight of the elves digging to build their new Hall. The mine, full of traps within Koshe Marr, the underground ruin within which the they had found the children, and the tunnels of the Ankhegs within which they had found the body of Meg Thistleburr's father.
After standing watch, Harvest returns to sit by Anthos as he works a piece of wood into a shape of his choosing.
"I have had a thought, Anthos," she begins. "What if it is not from the Culverwood that this thing that threatens the elves comes? What if the bears were not sent from the Culverwood? What if the thing is here? In this spot. And what if the bears were drawn?"
"It makes little sense to me that a power within the Culverwood might object to this settlement that is hours set apart from it when Merrydale to the west is closer to the edge of the wood that the elves are here."
"I will ask Paladins Lorth and Florin if they would inspect the area for the presence of Evil." Harvest stand to do just that. Her eyes turn to the excavation where the elves dig at the hillside.
"I ... I do not like the digging, Anthos," she says. "I do not think that the elves should be doing that."
