The Newcomers

DM Kathy
Sunday November 5th, 2006 11:05:00 PM

Fosco helps the injured elf to his feet and hustles him away from the tragic scene. The elf goes willingly, obviously still bewildered by his recent encounter.

Any uses his limited magic to heal his companions, then tackles the problem of what is to be done with two great bear carcasses.

Arminas sends Ewan aloft and begins to help with the bears. He offers to track them back to their point of origin if the others choose.

Harvest assesses the health of her companions--who are all, at least, able to walk even if all their hurts are not healed. She then moves to the dead elf, still lying on the grass where she was attacked.

Bralin casts more healing spells on himself and his companions, and expresses support for the idea of tracking the bears.

Davros wonders aloud about the bears' behavior, which does seem odd. Bears have ben known to attack people if the people encroach on their territory, but you have been here for a week. Bears will attack people if driven by hunger, but it is high summer. What caused this attack?

You begin cutting up the bears, and the elves help you willingly. "We'll never eat the fresh meat before it spoils in the heat," sighs Tahlala. "We'll need to dry much of it. We'll get started putting together drying racks."

In examining the stomach contents, you see that these bears have eaten a little bit of everything. You find berries, leaves, fish, small animals. It seems a typical diet for omnivores this time of year. You find no signs that the bears have been systematically eating humanoids.

The elves decline to eat horse-meat, and suggest that Granite can be buried or cremated. A somber delegation begins preparing the fallen elf for her burial.

Lorth
Monday November 6th, 2006 7:53:05 AM

Lorth goes with Harvest as asked. When he gets there he takes a moment to offer a prayer to Gargul.
"Gargul, you have seen fit to call this one home, speed his way upon the river and rejoin his soul with his loved ones that have gone before him."
Lorth then helps Harvest wrap and move the body.

Any
Monday November 6th, 2006 7:59:53 AM

Once the chore of butchering the animals is finished, Any rises and goes to the nearby stream to clean up.

Returning to the camp, he approaches Bralin,

"Do you still feel we should track these bears? If so, we should do it now while the tracks are fresh. There is still enough daylight to put us quite a distance along the trail. We cannot leave the elves unguarded. Who should we ask to remain here while we go?"

Harvest
Monday November 6th, 2006 8:18:04 AM

"Do you mean to say that someone had possibly sent these bears to their death, Davros Sapphiredge?" After returning to the camp with paladin Lorth and the body of the fallen elf, Harvest pursues the disturbing question. "If that is so, then they could not expect these two bears alone to slay all of the elves. It could not have been but a warning."

"And, whoever it may have been surely sent these bears out knowing that it was to their deaths." The small brown girl frowns.

Arminas  d20+7=10
Monday November 6th, 2006 9:54:47 AM

While the bears are being slaughtered, Arminas looks to see if they are mature bears or cubs, as well as their sex. (knowledge nature 10, take 20)

Looking up, he sees Ewan flying in circles high above the group. Arminas calls up to her.

Fly wide circles, warn of large predators.

The decline of the horse meat is not too surprising, though Arminas does say:

"Horse meat will provide food in an emergency. I have eaten many things that seem strange, yet they kept me alive. The forest though looks like it will provide."

Arminas wanders about a bit, and then walks up to Bralin.

"What shall we do?"

He keeps it short, he is learning the dwarves preferences for communication.

Fosco
Monday November 6th, 2006 10:45:03 AM

After delivering the man back to his waiting friends, I go over to the others and wait for the decision of what to do.

Florin Jadenth
Monday November 6th, 2006 11:48:11 AM

Florin looks to Bralin and smiles to him before speaking, "Thanks for the healing. Seems bears have more kick to them then I expected. I'm sorry about your horse though."

Florin slips from the saddle and checks on Ajax now while listening to what is being said and done.

Davros
Monday November 6th, 2006 4:08:35 PM

"To answer you question Harvest, I would say it seems possible. The situation is odd and it involves the protection of the elves. When you put the two together, I believe that an investigation is warranted."

"If the tracks are to be followed, then it should be now. Should some of us stay behind?"

Davros waits to hear what everyone thinks.

Bralin
Monday November 6th, 2006 5:11:48 PM

Bralin considers Any's point.

"I dislike dividing our force," he replies. "Tis possible the bears were sent to draw us away from the elves....."

The dwarf considers some more.

"Tis unlikely," he states at last. "Such a strategy would require much scouting by an enemy. We are diligent on our patrols. We would have seen some sign."

"We should all follow the bear sign," he finishes, and looks to Any to see if he agrees.

DM Kathy
Monday November 6th, 2006 10:52:48 PM

Arminas examines the bears. He finds that they are the large, savage variety that are called "Dire." Both are female; one young, one middle-aged.

The elves take possession of their fallen companion and begin preparing her for her funeral. Other elves begin hastily constructing drying racks on which the bear meat can be preserved.

Tahlela wanders close enough to your group to hear what you are discussing. "If you want to take an hour or two to backtrack the beasts," she says, "my hunters and I can keep watch here. Don't be gone too long, though."

Lorth
Tuesday November 7th, 2006 7:44:50 AM

Lorth moves away when the elves come to take care of their dead. He is sure they have their own customs and does not wish to get in the way. He then calls Tobiasz over and heals him, using his connection to Gargul. (Lay on hands for 15)

Any
Tuesday November 7th, 2006 8:46:41 AM

Any nods as each party member adds his opinion,

"I agree friend Bralin, and as the elves also agree, let us follow this track as a group. We need to put to rest the suggestion Davros has made. If these two bears were a random event, the incident should be over. But if someone sent them, we need to find out why. Let's make preparations quickly and be on the trail a soon as we can. I am ready to leave as quickly as I pick up my pack."

Any matches actions to words, and retrieves his pack from the camp. He draws his quarterstaff from his quiver, its length seeming to come endlessly out of that short sheath, and then awaits the others.

Harvest Moon nods in silent agreement. If this is attack was an intentional act, then a reckoning would be warranted. It is a calloused act to send living beings to their death in this way.

Harvest follows close to Anthos, her eyes and ears alert for danger.

Lorth heals Tobiasz, you grab your belongings, and you begin tracking the bears.

Arminas is able to follow the tracks easily enough. They move straight for a while, then meander about for a bit. By the time they straighten again, you have been on the trial for an hour.

Although your senses are on alert, you do not realize that you are not alone until a voice speaks nearby. It is a high-pitched voice, and speaks in a liquid trill that evokes birdsong and the rustling of leaves.

DM Kathy

Harvest casts a spell, which gives her the ability to understand any creature or object she touches. Of course, to touch the speaker, she first has to find it.

The creature is still hidden, but, looking carefully, Harvest, Any, and Fosco now see who is speaking. The voice belongs to a tiny creature less than two feet tall. It has a humanoid head, torso, and arms, with the wings, antennae, and legs of a cricket.

It speaks again, in Sylvan. Highlight to display spoiler: {"Friends of the settlement!" the creature echoes. "But this is marvelous! I was just on my way to look at the settlement, see what it's all about. Perhaps you can tell me more about it?"

He adds to Harvest, "I understand the tongue of the humans, good lady, although I speak it but poorly. If you likewise understand me, we can converse."

Kneeling before the tiny creature, Harvest turns to Anthos over her shoulder. On her face there is a broad grin of delight.

"This is Anthos Westar and Davros Sapphiredge," she points out the two who can speak the creatures language, enunciating their names carefully. "And this is Bralin Stoneminder," introducing their battle leader. "Paladin Lorth Jeradosta, Ranger Arminas Calaelen, Paladin Florin Jandeth, and Fosco Loamsdown."

Speaking In Sylvan:

"If you are comfortable enough with our common tongue, then perhaps everyone will be more relaxed if we use it. Do you have a name? Large folk such as ourselves are more accustomed to addressing people by their name than any other method. As for the settlement, I am sure we could pass along any information you would ask of us. Perhaps we could even arrange a meeting between the town's elders and yourself? I'm sure the elves would be very pleased to meet you."

DM Kathy

The little creature allows Harvest to touch him, with a gracious bow.

"I not well your tongue to speak," he says in oddly-accented Common. "To understand, yes! No to speak. I glad to meet you."

Switching to Sylvan, he adds: "But where are my manners? Some of you cannot even see me!"

With that, he steps out of his hiding-place so that you can all see him--a strange creature, part man, part grasshopper.

"You may call me Larkspur," he continues in Sylvan. "That is one of my names." He turns to Any "Dire bears? Truly? I did not know dire bears ventured so far from the Culverwood. How unusual."

"I want to see the settlement for myself," he tells Davros with a broad grin. "The folk of the Culverwood have heard about it, and wonder what kind of neighbors these elves will be. I came to see with my own eyes." Thoughtfully, he continues, "Although if some of the elders wanted to speak with me I would be happy to."

"And what of you?" he asks. "You are not elves--at least, most of you are not. Will you be living in the new village, too? We had heard it was to be only elves."

Bralin

Peoples with the horns and feet of goats.

"It has been a pleasure to meet you," Larkspur replies to Any. "And I wish you luck on your quest." Switching to Common, he says: "Meeting you good. Be fortunate with that you do." With a courtly bow, he continues on his way toward the new settlement.

Then her smile turns to a look of concern, and she turns her gaze ahead in the direction from which the bears had come.

Arminas ponders the questions from Harvest and Any, as well Any's decision to trust the new found creature.

"I too am curious about the intentions of the Dire Bears, and will look more carefully at the tracks to discern possible intentions. Any, why do you trust Larkspur so? I myself think he may not want development in the forest, and may himself have sent the bears. I do not trust coincidence, and it is too convienent to find him along the path of the bears. Resolved to continue, you track the bears for another hour and more, all the way into the Culverwood itself. Looking at the tracks, Arminas would describe their movement as more or less purposeful, given the limitations of animal intelligence.

You finally reach a spot about five minutes' walk inside the Culverwood. There the tracks diverge; apparently the bears arrived at this spot from two different directions.

"We have reached the time where we must truly decide if we should turn back or not. The bears evidently came from two different directions at this point. It seems obvious that they were sent. The question is, by who?

We are now 2 hours away from the village, and we told them we would not be gone too long. Should we return and tell them what we have found thus far, or decide which of the bears to track from here?

I feel we should return. If for no other reason than to check on the village before we decide on a further course. What do you all say?"

"Please, do not walk about and disturb the tracks. Where the bears came from is not important. What is important is whose tracks we find here where the bears converged. That will provide a clue as to who sent the bears. Then I agree, we should hurry back to the village."

Arminas then very carefully looks about for tracks, however faint in the area that coincides with the bear tracks.

Again they have come to the Culverwoods, and again the stories whisper in her mind. The paths that always change. No way is ever the same.

"I think we should return, Anthos," she replies. "It would be unwise to enter the Culverwood without greater preparation." The brown girl backs away as through from a dangerous animal.

"I found Larkspur to be very sincere in his manner, Arminas Calaelen. Though, as you say, the coincidence makes for suspicion."

"There is the tale of a keeper of pigeons, Little Boo, who found the bodies of two hawks torn and bloody upon the road. He surmised that they had encountered each other and fought a great battle for dominion of the airs above. Feeling that his birds were now, no doubt safe, he released them into the air. A great eagle promptly launched itself into the air and decimated the man's flock."

"And yet, I think, that to take what one can see as the only things that act within the Wold may be a mistake." Harvest continues to back away from the tree line. "Do you think it possible, that if the bears were sent, that it may have been the forest itself that might have sent them?"

Second, we have two dire bears coming from opposite directions that join together and head straight for the elven village. I have spent many years tracking creatures in the forest. The only creature that walks upon the land that is impossible to track is a druid. Either Larkspur is a druid or there is another about. Let us hurry back to the village and speak with Larkspur furthur."

Upon reaching the village, he tells the hunters of what he has seen.

Returning to the settlement, you ask after Larkspur. The elves break into smiles. "Yes, he is still here," says one of the elves.

"Makes me feel quite nostalgic," says another. "I haven't spoken to a grig since before we left the Culverwood."

If you ask, they can lead you to where Larkspur is happily climbing over one of the newly-constructed tree homes. When he sees you, he calls a greeting in his own language. "I very much like town!" he adds in his uniquely-accented Common.

When told of the bears, the elders look concerned. "It does seem unlikely that such creatures would have come all this way on their own," says Tahlela. "Especially at this time of year, when food is so abundantly available. We should double the watch."

"More than that," says Firon. "We need to be very careful about straying too far from the group. Your hunters may need to stop hunting for a while."

"Those who were attacked were farmers," Sivaine points out. "They weren't all that far away. I don't know if it's possible to stay close enough to avoid any possible disaster."

"And hunting is the best way we have of feeding ourselves," Tahlela says. "The crops will take time."

Firon sighs. "I see your point. But hunting parties should be as large as possible. No need to borrow trouble."

Any is relieved that the elves know what Larkspur is--a grig, something to remember. He smiles at the antics of the small creature as it scurries about the village. "When you go about any activity," Harvest suggests, "foraging or farming, gathering water, anything, there should be those who do and those who watch. Speaking to Any and Harvest and whoever might be listening.
Our job is to protect this extremely large contingent of elves. And they have some skill in combat I am sure. Would it not be prudent then to do our job of protecting these people by finding out why these creatures who should not be delving here are here and find a way of stopping it rather than having these people scared and possibly hurt or killed by more attacks?
They could send out a large hunting party every day while a second hunting party takes up positions around this developing community for protection while we go out and do what we do best.

In fact it may not be a bad idea to send an official emmissary from the elders out to make contact with the local population with ourselves as escort. Arminas' talk with the hunters and elder elves has solved some problems, yet the safety of the community is still in question.

"Yes, we will double the guard. Grynntym's visit and council is of dire importance though. I will send a messenger for him tomorrow. Until then, I do not believe we will find out enough by following tracks. If a druid sent the bears, I will not be able to track him. We will stay and defend for now. I would however have another talk with Larkspur."

Arminas asks Harvest to go with him, for a visit with Larkspur.

"Larkspur, I hope you have enjoyed the elven hospitality. It is a shame they had to relocate, yet they would have been enslaved by Parnoth if they had stayed in the Culverwood. Tell me, who is the druid watching over this forest? I think we need to discuss the proper way to keep the forest healthy. Elves as you know are very keen on working with the druids."

When they are done, he mentions to Harvest and Bralin that he plans on sending an animal messenger to find Grynntym in the morning.

You continue to discuss the attacks and what is to be done. You agree that Grynntym's wisdom would be invaluable, but unfortunately you have no way to reach him. You may just have to wait until he decides to visit.

Harvest gives some thought to what types of spells Druids can cast, and comes to the conclusion that they don't have any spells likely to enchant a sentient creature such as Larkspur. Druidic spells tend to deal with animals, plants, and natural forces.

Arminas goes to speak with Larkspur.

"The druid watching over this forest?" the little man echoes in Sylvan. He snorts. "Not much of a forest, if you ask me. I don't know who watches over this land; it is farther from the Culverwood than I usually travel. Probably one of you big folk. Or maybe there's no druid here at all."

He looks thoughtful at the story of the elves' plight. "Parnoth!" he exclaims with a shudder. "I'm glad I don't live in that part of the Culverwood. And I'm glad these elves were able to escape." Bright-eyed, he looks around at the settlement. "I think it will be fun to have such neighbors!"

Any is unsure what the party should do. His inclination is to seek out the person responsible for the attack, as it seems clear now that it was not a random event. However, they have also been charged with guarding the elves, and if they leave, they will be leaving that portion of their assignment.

If only their was a third option, a way to fulfill both aspects.

Harvest
Monday November 20th, 2006 10:53:21 AM

"I am not certain what it is that we can do, Fosco Loamsdown." Harvest Moon blows out a puff of breath to clear the crest of hair from one eye. The act speaks also of the frustration of facing an invisible enemy. "We could enter the Culverwood. But where in the wood would be go?"

Harvest reaches into her pouch to draw forth a leaf.

"Wear this leaf at all times, and stay together. The Culverwood is no ordinary forest. It has a mind of its own and it does not tolerate outsiders. This leaf will provide you with safe passage as long as you stay together. As long as this leaf is green you will be under my protection, but heed me well, keep your fires small, burn only dead wood from the ground, and do no harm to the forest."

Those had been Grynntym's words when they had left him after rescuing the greenmage from his imprisonment within the tree. But would it protect them now? And would the leaves protect Fosco Loamsdown and Davros Sapphiredge who do not possess one?

"I do not think we should leave the elves for now," Harvest Moon continues. "I think it would be unwise to strike out without greater knowledge of what opposes us or where it may lie."

She seats herself upon the ground with Larkspur, and she speaks with him more fully with him about the attack that had occurred, the trail of the bears and where it had lead.

"Do you see our need, Larkspur?" she asks. "Can you think of a way in which you could help us and the elves to find a way to common understanding with whatever might have sent those bears?"

"I would like to offer the following suggestion."

"In my studies of war, I have found that many tactics can prove useful. I know that we are not at war with this 'unseen force' but the underlying reasoning is the same. Perhaps he/she/it or 'they' sent the bears as a 'test' of our abilities or of the defenses of the new town. They may also have wished to see our reaction. If we storm out looking to start trouble and fight, then they may see the elven settlement as a hostile neighbor."

"My proposal therefore is this: we should do nothing. Let's bolster the hunting parties with one or two of our own. Let's increase the guard and continue our patrols, but otherwise do nothing."

For the party members only- and especially out of listening range of Larkspur: "I would like to remind everyone that even though fey creatures are not usually evil, they are frequently mischievous."

Davros, Florin, and Bralin begin making plans to increase their watches and assist the hunters. Arminas recruits an owl to help watch by night.

A few tension-filled days follow. Nothing else attacks the camp, but the earlier atmosphere of hopeful cooperation has changed. At the cry from the watchers, Lorth summons his warhorse, and Any and Florin ready their weapons. Fosco goes right on helping to plan the public house (which isn't being built yet).

Harvest sees that the creature is a centaur and leaps to her feet. [OOC: it's been three days since your conversation with Larkspur; the little grig has long since left camp. However, you can ask your questions of the elves.]

"I've seen centaurs before," one elf man says. "They are not common, but there are some in the Culverwood. Perhaps that's where this one comes from."

Arminas asks Ewan if there is anything else with the centaur, and gets a very bored negative in response. There is nobody approaching but the centaur, and the centaur, Ewan makes clear, is not very interesting.

As he gets closer, everyone can make out that the person is a centaur and not a man on a horse. His horse half is a rich brown color, with a darker brown tail. His hair is the same dark brown, long, tied back in a queue. He wears leather armor on his torso, and there is a brace of spears crossed on his back. Approaching the settlement, he raises one hand in greeting, opening the other to show it is empty.

"Hello!" he calls in Common. "I am Bryn of the Culverwood. May I approach?"

Cautious but curious, the sentries give him leave to approach their position. When he gets to where he can speak in a normal tone and be heard, the centaur speaks again.

"Greetings. My name, as I said, is Bryn, and I am a druid of the Culverwood," he begins. "The other day I ran into an acquaintance of mine, and he mentioned that you might be interested in talking to some of the druids in the area."

He smiles, "And I must admit, I've been curious about this place since I heard of it. So I've come to satisfy my curiosity--and perhaps yours as well.

"I also bring word of one whom I believe you are seeking," he adds. "I saw Grynntym the Greenmage about five days ago. At that time, he was heading deeper into the Culverwood, and planned to stop by here on his way back to Jarlwolf. He should be stopping by in the next day or two."

"Welcome, Bryn of the Culverwood. I am Harvest Moon. This is Anthos Westar, Arminas Calaelen, Bralin Stoneminder, Paladins Lorth Jeradosta and Florin Jadenth, Davros Sapphiredge, and Fosco Loamsdown." Harvest remains at Any's side as she speaks the name of each member of the group.

"Was Larkspur the Grig not the acquaintance of whom you speak? I trust that he was well. He appeared to very much enjoy his visit here. Did he tell you of our concern for the safety of the camp? We would appreciate as much of your aide and insight in such matters as you can spare."

Wednesday November 22nd, 2006 7:33:35 PM

Arminas bows to the Centaur:

"It is an honor to meet you. As the young lady has mentioned, I am Arminas Calaelen. I am from the Culverwood just South of Merrydale. It was I who tracked the bears back from where they came. Two dire bears came from opposite directions, met up within the Culverwood and headed straight here. They killed an elf and were themselves killed. It is a tragic loss, to both the forest and to this village. As was mentioned, this matter has brought great confusion to this village. Grynntym himself has agreed to this settlement, yet someone has summoned the bears against these elves. Whomever did so, did not leave tracks."

Florin Jadenth

Florin goes out with the others to meet the centaur and nods to him as Harvest speaks his name. Once everyone is done he steps foreward and holds out his hand, "Nice to meet, as Harvest said, my name is Florin Jadenth."

Davros
Wednesday November 22nd, 2006 9:52:32 PM

"Greetings Bryn, Davros says with a bow. My companions have already asked you about the bears, I would like to ask - How do you feel about this settlement? These elves seek only peace and harmony with their new neighbors. Is their settlement accepted by your people?"

DM Kathy
Thursday November 23rd, 2006 2:00:22 AM

Bryn greets you all cordially. To Any's questions, he replies, "There are many druids in the Culverwood. I know some of them, of course, but not all. None of the ones I know are capable of such an act. At least," he adds, a troubled frown crossing his face, "I hope not. As for this area, it is farther from my home than I usually go. If there is a druid here, I do not know them."

Both Bralin and Any get the idea that Bryn is sincere and worried.

"Larkspur is a name he uses," Bryn replies to Harvest with a little smile. "He was quite enthusiastic about this settlement, and very persistent in his efforts to get help for the elves here." He turned to Davros "I'm not sure what you mean by 'my people'," he says. "Both centaurs and druids tend to go their own way, rather than making decisions as groups. But this land is several hours' walk from the Culverwood itself, and the elves clearly plan to live in harmony with Nature. I can't conceive of anyone truly objecting."

Bryn listens intently to Arminas's report. "That does sound like a druid," he says unhappily. "We can command animals, and even minimally experienced druids can move without leaving tracks. But I can't conceive of who it might be."

Fosco, less troubled by the mystery of the bears than the demands of his appetite, visits the cookfires and volunteers himself as a taster. The elven cooks smile and offer up their dishes. "If we can please a halfling," one woman says with a smile, "then we know we've got a meal worth serving!"

"It is comforting to know that the elves here have another friend in you, Bryn of the Culverwood." Harvest puts her hand into Any's. An act of tenderness amid the questioning and the dire memory of the attack of some three days ago.

"Have you eaten, Bryn of the Culverwood? Would you stay for a while? Your aide and knowledge would be greatly appreciated as we work to solve this mystery, but I don't think it need be at the expense of hospitality."

"Do you think that a greater power may have directed the bears against the elves?" she asks. "It concerns me that the bears seemed drawn from separate directions before sent here. Do you have any idea what might have the power to do that?"

Any
Thursday November 23rd, 2006 6:39:21 PM

Any smiles as Harvest invites Bryn to eat with the group. He is satisfied as to Bryn's explanation of himself, and relaxes somewhat as they continue to talk.

"Any suggestions that you might make to help us secure the area for the elves while they build would be appreciated. Perhaps the elders could use some help in transplanting berries, or trees to areas where they would grow well near the vilage. Any help that you might offer would be appreciated."

He will returns to helping around the camp, unless Bryn has more to tell them.

Davros

"Bryn, perhaps the elders would be interested in making a formal meeting with their various new neighbors. Who would you suggest they introduce themselves to?"

"I would also be pleased to learn any lore of the area or of the natural wold that you would be willing to teach us."

Arminas nods at Bryn's explanation that a druid is most likely involved.

"Yes, I could see no other explanation. I know the druids wander alone, and in their own way protect the land. Perhaps this druid has the mistaken idea these elves mean to harm the land. Is it possible for the Archdruid to call a council and resolve this? We have sworn to protect these elves, at the cost of our own or others lives. Already too many have died."

Looking over at the supper being cooked, he adds:

"Forgive me for being impulsive. As Harvest says, we should eat first and think upon a solution."

Looking up to see Ewan flying high, Arminas conveys:

Florin is happy Bryn seems to be of a nice nature and from the looks he really wants to help so he lets his guard down some and puts his longsword away.

Florin will offer to take a ride around the camp with him. Calling Ajax and letting his warhorse stretch his legs as he rides with his fellow paladin friend. Before heading back to the camp Florin thinks and grins, "Why don't we let these two stretch their legs abit more. Not a race but let's pick up the pace back to the village, what do you say? Inless you want a small race."

Florin will spur Ajax to a faster gallop inless it becomes a actual race. (Ride:21)

After he gets back to camp Florin goes about getting something to eat and spends abit of time flirting with the elven ladies who might be around the eating area. (Don't know if I needed these checks but Cha:7 Wow, bad roll and Diplomacy:17)

Sunday November 26th, 2006 10:59:23 PM

Knowning where his priorities lie, Fosco settles down to taste the evening meal. It isn't bad, for elvish food. Too many leaves and things, and not enough gravy, but the flavors are excellent.

Harvest's suggestion is seconded by the elves, and Bryn graciously accepts. With the elves leading the way, he heads toward the cook-fires, answering questions as he goes.

"A druid would have the power to command animals in such a way," he replies to Harvest. "Or a very experienced ranger. Arcanists, I believe, would be more likely to summon such creatures from another plane entirely, so you wouldn't expect to see their tracks leading up to the site of the attack."

He smiles at Any's suggestions. "A good thought," he says, "although summer is a poor time to transplant. I would be happy to return in the autumn, though, and assist the elves with such a project."

To Arminas he replies, "We don't really have an Archdruid, though all respect Grynntym. Perhaps he would be able to talk to druids in the area."

Florin and Lorth exercise their mounts for a bit before joining the elves for the evening meal. Florin takes the opportunity to do a little judicious flirting, and is rewarded with smiles from several young ladies, and frowns from a couple of fathers. "It is unusual to see such a big, strong elf," one of the women murmurs as she slices you a piece of bread. She smiles a little. "From a distance, you almost look like a human!"

[OOC: Florin, are you still wearing Ivy's red ribbon?]

The evening meal is companionable, though there is still tension from recent events. Bryn asks the elves about their progress in building the town, and in return has a few suggestions about how to stay in harmony with the natural balance of the area. On the whole, however, he is impressed with the elves' plans and says so.

The sun sets, and Bryn asks and is given permission to stay the night before heading back to the Culverwood in the morning. The night passes uneventfully.

Any
Monday November 27th, 2006 8:40:33 AM

Any seems to be everywhere, trying to help the elves in various tasks. The Half-elf is interested in every aspect of the building, learning from the elven craftsman.

He also takes spare moments during the day to practice his skill at arms, trying to improve his fighting technique. As part of this he asks Bralin and the two paladins advice on different situations, striving to learn tricks and strategies for combat.

In spite of all of this, he finds time to point out a unique flower he found to Harvest, and show her then den of a fox he found not far from the camp, enjoying what little quiet time they can find.

Monday November 27th, 2006 11:17:43 AM

Life amongst the elves is seductive. There is such peace and joy in such a community. There is time for the little joys. Harvest walks the edge of the camp, flower in hand. She smiles as she recalls waving the very same flower in the direction of the small pack of baby foxes as they had scampered back within their hole at the sharp bark of their watchful mother. And there had been the look in Anthos' eyes as she had turned her grin up to him after the funny little foxes had left nothing but the memory of their tails.

Such a life, full of family, in which a cozy room awaits one's return every day. A room much like the neat little attic in which Meg Thistleburr had lived. Such a life is so alluring. And yet such a life seems so very far away. For there would never be an end to the road for her. She had sworn to walk the Wold. In walking would she be able to bring such peace to the places that she will find. Such is the blessing of the Walker. And such is the Walker's curse, to never stay to live the life that they have brought.

"Is there no way that you can help us to find out who or what might have sent the bears to this camp, Bryn of the Culverwood?" Harvest Moon's own question of earlier that morning echoes within her head as she walks the edge of the camp, watching for danger. "Can you possibly speak with the animals or plants along the way, inquiring as to what they might have seen? Anything?"

"While this mystery remains," she had said, "the camp remains in danger. We must do everything in our power to ensure the safety of all who live here, and we would be grateful for any help that you may be able to provide."

Watch for me again this day.

Arminas goes back as the others begin their day. Harvest is speaking to Bryn, and Arminas joins in the conversation.

"I could speak with the animals, yet it may be difficult to find a witness. I had hoped to speak with the bears, but unfortunaltey we had to destroy them before I had the chance. Plants though may still remember. Bryn, can you inquire of them who sent the bears?"

Arminas finishes listening to the conversation between Harvest and Bryn, then adds:

"Perhaps you could help the elves build a safety net. If snares were formed in such a way that the elves could run a safe path through them, their pursuers may be trapped. Could you help us build and design such a system?"

He smiles and takes the piece of bread and nods to the elven maiden, "Would you honor me with some company while I eat miss? I wouldn't mind your family joining us either, I have not had the chance to speak to other elves much and it would be a honor to use the elven language for awhile." Florin keeps his diplomatic ways up and if the elven maiden agrees he greets the lady's parents to with a gentle bow and a hello, trying to make sure it is known his actions were purely innocent.

With a pleasant combination of work, practice, vigilence, conversation, and fellowship, you spend another couple of days with the elves.

Bryn agrees to speak to animals and plants to try to find out what happened. He will suggest the same to any other druids and folk of the forest he happens to meet.

Two days after Bryn leaves the settlement, Grynntym arrives. Several of the younger elves rush to greet him, calling his name, and "Greenmage!" in their own tongue and in Common. He is ushered to a place of honor near the fire.

"I have heard of your recent troubles," he tells the elves, his voice low and sympathetic. "Allow me to offer my condolences on your loss.

"I have looked in the Culverwood," he says. "It is hard to say for certain, because the forest itself has changed since the Fae King's awakening. But I think perhaps there is something...new...in the part of the Culverwood nearest to this settlement. I have no evidence to support this, only the general feel of the forest. Nevertheless, I would caution all of you to remain on your guard."

Perhaps we could send to town asking to borrow a few guards, allowing us the time to check this anomaly out. What do you think?"

He will then await the response of Gryntym and the others.

Aside from this, she remains quiet at Anthos' side.

The dwarf spends his time either standing guard or working his stone. It is becoming quite good, he decides.

The Greenmage arrives, and Bralin dutifully trots over to hear his cousel. He frowns at the druid's report. "New" is change. Change is bad. The warrior considers the situation for several minutes.

After careful consideration, he turns to Any.
"We have remained here several days with no incident. Tis probable that further days will bring the same. I say we go to the source. Enter Culverwood and seek out this 'newness'."
Bralin looks over at Gryntym.
"Mayhap you can abide here a few days while we search?"

Arminas
Tuesday November 28th, 2006 2:30:08 PM

Arminas listens to the council of Gryntym, and then becomes deeply concerned about the warning of a 'new' element in the Culverwood.

"The Culverwood has always been something ancient, something that one could count on. I agree with Bralin."

He shakes his head at his own words.

"This newness, if it threatens the Culverwood or these elves it must be found out. I do not know if it is bad or not, but I will gladly lead an expedition into the Culverwood to find out."

Davros
Tuesday November 28th, 2006 3:36:18 PM

"Grynntym, it is both an honor and a pleasure to meet you sir", Davros says with a bow and flourish.

"I agree that an investigation is in order. We need more information and there is only one way to get it. We are here for the elves protection, and we cannot protect them while "new" unknown things are going on in the forest. Maybe all it will take is to make contact and make clear the elves' intentions in this area."

Florin Jadenth
Tuesday November 28th, 2006 6:35:41 PM

Florin smiles and offers his hand to Grynntym and nods to him, "It is nice to meet you sir."

Florin keeps his eyes and ears open for anything as he is hoping no problems spring up. He is glad for the slight peace the group and elves are getting at the moment and can only hope it lasts. A warrior of a god might be trained for battle but is just as happy with times of peace where no blood has to be shed.

DM Kathy

Grynntym returns your greetings. "I'm not sure the group of you could succeed where I failed," he replies to Any. "Whatever this new thing is, it seems unwilling to be found just yet. The druids are on alert, and perhaps in time we will know more."

"Thadius and Thelpus," he says with a smile for Harvest. "They are...they are behaving as well as can be expected. Certainly there has been no repeat of the type of incident that caused you so much distress."

"I will stay and watch if you like," he says to Bralin and Arminas, "although the thought makes me uneasy. Were not the days leading up to the bear attack also uneventful?"

"However," he continues, "we do not need to make that decision just now. Tonight is for good food and fellowship. In the morning light, I would tour this new town and see your progress."

The elves seem enthusiastic about this plan, and the rest of the evening is spent in feasting and celebration. Songs are sung, tales are told, and tunes are played as dancers whirl and dart among the cookfires. The impromptu feast under the stars lasts until late at night, but the elves are nevertheless rested and fresh the next morning as Grynntym begins his tour.

Late into the night, exhausted from singing and dancing he climbs a tree and settles into a notch besides Ewan. He goes into a dreamlike trance. Early in the morning he awakes, and goes on a hunt with Ewan.

When the group gathers for breakfast, he comments to them, but in particular to Bralin:

"Grynntym makes an important point. If he or the other druids could not find the source of this 'newness' in the Culverwood, I would stand a scant chance. If I lead us into the Culverwood, we will either not find anything or the thing will find us. If it finds us, it will not be to our advantage."

The next morning, the elven elders take Grynntym on a tour of the new settlement. They show him the tree-homes, of which there are now several built. They show him the sentry posts, carefully hidden. They take him up to the fishing hole, and walk him past the newly-planted crops.

Grynntym seems pleased with what he sees, and offers both advice and praise. The tour ends at a large, steeply-sloping hill, where a group of elves has just begun to dig.

"We're borrowing a notion from the Halflings," says Firon with a smile. "If we can't put our Town Hall in a tree, we'll dig it into a hillside." He gestures toward the slope. "The sod will help keep the Hall cool in summer and warm in winter. We'll put windows in this south slope, and plenty of skylights."

Grynntym frowns. "Take care you do not dig too much," he says. "Soil can be washed away if diggers are too careless. I see it among the humans all the time."

Firon nods. "We will pay special attention to the grasses and plants that will cover the buildings. They must remain robust and firm of root." He gestures at the shape of the hill. "And see, we follow the natural contours of the land. The Hall will blend harmoniously, Greenmage, I will see to it."

Disturbing memories fill the mind of Harvest Moon at the sight of the elves digging to build their new Hall. The mine, full of traps within Koshe Marr, the underground ruin within which the they had found the children, and the tunnels of the Ankhegs within which they had found the body of Meg Thistleburr's father.

After standing watch, Harvest returns to sit by Anthos as he works a piece of wood into a shape of his choosing.

"I have had a thought, Anthos," she begins. "What if it is not from the Culverwood that this thing that threatens the elves comes? What if the bears were not sent from the Culverwood? What if the thing is here? In this spot. And what if the bears were drawn?"

"It makes little sense to me that a power within the Culverwood might object to this settlement that is hours set apart from it when Merrydale to the west is closer to the edge of the wood that the elves are here."

"I will ask Paladins Lorth and Florin if they would inspect the area for the presence of Evil." Harvest stand to do just that. Her eyes turn to the excavation where the elves dig at the hillside.

"I ... I do not like the digging, Anthos," she says. "I do not think that the elves should be doing that."

Having seen the elves privately mocking Bralin, Arminas decides to bolster Bralin's image in the eyes of the elves about camp. He can be heard saying:

"Sure, he is loud and clumsy, but you should see him fight."

"Yes, I know he has the manners of a badger, yet his heart is kind."

"No, I do not believe him to be as stupid as an orc. Really, look at him fashion the stone carvings. He must have intelligence."

"That is just a rumour. He did not try and kill me, and even if he did he could not succeed. Really, we are quite good friends."

When Bralin happens by, Arminas smiles and waves.

"See, we are buddies."

The morning goes by uneventful, with most of the group doing their chores, or patrols, or other activities.
The greenmage excuses himself from the entourage and asks to speak to the Elders privately. And off they go.

As everyone is sitting down for lunch a din of activity can be seen coming from where the town hall is being dug, a couple lads race by the makeshift dining area to the tent where the Elders are meeting. A few moments later they and the Druid move in hurried steps towards that area and as they pass by where you are eating, one of the Elders motions for you to come.

(assuming you all go)
Upon arrival you see 3 groups of people, about 6 each speaking in hushed tones. The foreman walks up to the elders and give his account.

We began digging where the main floor would be when Lorimar let out a yelp and fell into what at first we thought was a sinkhole. Upon further examination....well, I think it would be best if you saw for yourselves.

After clearing the way of onlookers you are lead down a couple of wooden planks set on the ground at an angle leading into the Halfling type building. Smack dab in the center of the room you see a rather large hole, a little more than elf sized. A torch is sparked up and as you move cautiously to peer into the hole you see that it drops down maybe 5 feet onto a crude set of stone and earth steps. They lead down another 20' before the light from the torch stops. It obviously extends further down.

Did you go further down to investigate? Asks the Druid.

No, we helped Lorimar out of the hole, sent him to the healers to be looked at, and summoned you. We are not adventurers, we are builders and craftsmen. Investigating places like that is for people like them. <points to the Swords>

After looking at each other for a few moments, and whisperings out of the way, they all turn and look at you.

Any

"We would need to prepare for a search of this new discovery, but I agree with friend Lorimar, we could do this. I for one am willing, but we should council on this matter, and not rush off in haste. There is also the matter of the protection of the village if we are not here."

Turning to the other Sword's,

"What do you think my friends? It is no less dangerous than our recent excursion into the mines to rescue the children, but we know how that turned out. At least we will not have innocents with us to safeguard as we go."

Lorth
Wednesday December 6th, 2006 8:48:55 AM

Lorth nods, "I will be ready to go as soon as the word is given. Until then we should probably post a guard here, in case something comes out.", he looks to Bralin, "I am willing to take that post.", he states.

With a turkey leg in one hand and a mug in his other, I stand there with the others peering into the hole.

Watching and Listening to the goings on in what is to be their city hall, I look around at what they have done, seeing fine craftsmanship and making mental notes of some faults to address with the foreman later.

After finishing all the meat from the leg and draining the rest of the cup I set both down on a table, wipe my hands off on my pants and my mouth with the sleeve of my shirt.

Looking to the others: I will be right back. And don't anyone go in, let me scout first. You know, traps and such.

I then run back to my tent and gather my adventuring equipment, and walk back to the group.

Ok, I am ready whenever you are.

Harvest Moon shivers with the dread of premonition. It is as she had thought. She peers from behind Anthos at the darkness within the hole.

"Paladin Lorth, Paladin Florin, can you feel a sense of evil from within the hole?"

Arminas looks down into the hole, and the stairs that lead down.

"Any, I believe that you are letting your thoughts of your dear Harvest cloud your judgement."

Arminas looks at Harvest and smiles:

"Forgive me, but you expressed concern for the elves digging. The reason for your concern is not apparent to me. This simply looks like the elves have discovered the ruins of an ancient settlement. While I do not desire to go below ground, I will bet you a gold piece that these stairs lead down to an empty storeroom. A few minutes from now we will be back about our patrols."

Arminas' possessions are few, and he keeps them in a small pack on his back.

"I will go down though just in case, and see if there are tracks of anything but cave crickets down there."

Florin Jadenth
Wednesday December 6th, 2006 8:32:54 PM

Florin is more then willing to help with whats happening and heads with the others.

Before they move much farther Florin holds up the group a moment and speaks up to them, "Everyone, a day is coming soon that is special in my family and a tradition is observed by them and me which I try to continue so if you all would give me just one a moment I like to do something at this moment."

Florin pulls his backpack off and digs through it before pulling out a wrapped object and handing one to each person in the group, "In a few days it will be Giving Day and just incase there is no suitable time to do this then I wanted to do this now."

Lorth finds when he unwraps his gift a small silver statue of Gargul. Some of this silver work done by Florin.

Harvest finds when she unwraps her gift a string of beads with high woldian runes carved into each one. (meditateing beads.)

Any when he unwraps his gift finds a dark wood lute with silver decorations on it. Some of the silver work done by Florin himself.

Arnimas when he unwraps his gift finds a small silver statue of a elven ranger hunting. Some of this silver work also done by him.

Bralin when he unwraps his gift finds a nice small stone statue of a valiant looking dwarf riding a pony into combat.

Fosco when he opens his gift finds a set of silverware (spoon, knife and fork) with his initials inscribbed on the handles. The silver work partly being done by Florin.

Davros when he unwraps his gift finds a small diary with silver decoration too. It has the High Woldian symbol of memory on the cover.

Bralin
Wednesday December 6th, 2006 9:17:17 PM

Bralin receives the gift from Florin with a nod of thanks.

Looking over the hole and the stairs, he hears Any's query.
"Aye, we all should descend," he offers. "The Greenmage provides more protection alone than we do as a group. There is little danger up here."

With that, the warrior goes back to retrieve his pack, and returns in short order.
"I should follow Fosco," he notes to the group as they prepare.

Davros
Wednesday December 6th, 2006 10:07:50 PM

"Florin such a gift cannot be thanked for with words so instead I offer what I should have done formally and sooner - my hand and my friendship." Davros extends his hand for a heartfelt shake.

"I can't help but feeling that this discovered tunnel is connected to the bear attack. I think we should post ourselves as guards, prepare and go in at first light."

Fosco
Thursday December 7th, 2006 12:50:40 AM

For once the halfling is at a loss for words, being given something like this. Mouth opening and closing as if he is trying to come up with the right words. Then walks over, and hugs Florin.
Wiping some condensation from my cheek that must of come off Florin's jerkin, I quickly deposit the gift into my pants pocket. And unbelievably, they all fit without a bulge.

Lorth
Thursday December 7th, 2006 7:40:37 AM

"Thank you Florin, for your gift. Certainly it is not expected.", Lorth smiles. He then wraps his statue carefully in some cloth and puts it away in his pack.
Lorth then nods at Harvest and takes some time to concentrate on the area within the hole, however he doubts he will sense anything, unless something is hiding right around the corner. He lets everyone know if he feels anything of the darker persuasion.

Any
Thursday December 7th, 2006 9:09:12 AM

Any accepts the wrapped gift from Florin, and upon its opening he stands holding the beautiful lute. He lifts it into position, and checks its tune with a light strum, adjusting one string with a deft turn of his left hand.

He looks as if he is about to play a tune, but instead he mutes the strings.

"Friend Florin, I have no words to express my thanks for such a gift. I believe I shall have to find those words before I can truly accept this magnificent lute. For now, know that you have given me a gift beyond the gift itself."

He bows deeply to Florin, and rising, he turns to an Elf elder standing nearby.

"We will accept your charge, indeed most are ready to go this instant. While we are below, please care for our animals, and place this lute in a place of safety and honor. By the time we return, it is hoped that I will have discovered the words needed to accept it properly, and we will have true reason to celebrate."

Turning to Arminas, Any softly says,

"My caution comes from our recent experience. My Lady is capable of making her own decisions and taking care of her own safety, and though I do worry at times for her, she has saved my life and yours more often than the reverse. This is one of the many reasons of my love for her."

This said, Any states that he is ready as soon as the others are. His pack is already upon his back.

DM BigTim
Thursday December 7th, 2006 10:19:42 AM

After it has been decided that the group will proceed into the dark hole, Fosco easily lowers himself into it. Dropping only 5 feet after hanging his 3 foot self over the lip.
Followed closely by Arminas.

The steps lead down some 40' and end at a solid looking stone door some 5' tall. There is no lock of any kind on the door nor is there any hinges or handles. And upon reaching the landing in front of the door, a single sconce to the left of said door comes alive with light, a bluish light, non fire but enough to illuminate the door and the 10 foot landing.

On the door there is writing, yet none can ascertain the meaning.

Harvest
Thursday December 7th, 2006 11:57:30 AM

"That is so very nice of you, Paladin Florin." Harvest Moon's face lights with a smile as she explores each bead, reading the rune upon it. "It is very beautiful." She shows the beads to Anthos.

"Your family has a very gracious tradition, Paladin Florin. I am honored to have been a part of it."

But as Fosco Loamsdown lowers himself into the dark hole, the distraction of the delightful gift dissipates, drawing again to the potential dangers below. She flushes pink at Anthos' words of praise. On her way past, she touches him lightly upon the arm. Would that the simple touch could transfer the full wealth of feeling within her, but with the current situation such a hurried sign of affection would have to do.

Harvest lowers to hands and knees next to the hole and tips her head sideways to see down the hole after Fosco and Arminas. With a look of tense expectation, she awaits Paladin Lorth's word of the evil from the hole.

It is almost a relief when there seems no result.

Harvest slips down into the hole. At the door, Harvest Moon casts a spell that she has kept with her for many days. Then she touches the writing upon the door. (Cast Comprehend Languages)

Davros drops down into the hole by hanging onto the ledge and then lowering himself. Not nearly as graceful as those who have already entered, he then needs to pick himself up and dust himself off.

Approaching the door, he makes out what he can of the writing, (decipher script 14) and then casts detect magic off of a wand and scans the door and surrounding area for magic auras.

Sensing the excitement, a rat pokes his head out of Davros' cloak and begins to look around. Everyone gets the distinct feeling that they are being "ordered" about as Whiskers gestures first to one and then to the others as they walk by. Seeming satisfied that everyone is performing as expected, he then settles into a posture of command upon Davros' shoulder. Davros merely shakes his head as he continues to concentrate.

Florin smiles and is pleased the gifts go over better then he had expected and takes Davros's offered hand, shaking it gently and smiling, "Thank you Davros and I just hope in the short time I been with you all that I been of as much help as you all have been to me so far in our adventuers and that there are many more to come."

Florin smiles and nods to Bralin and the others and looks to Harvest, "I had and have many things against my family but this was a tradition I did enjoy as a child and now older I find the experience of shareing it with others, one that I enjoy also."

Florin smiles at Any's comments and nods to him, "I understand my friend and once we return maybe a song? I would enjoy hearing one as from what I've heard from the others, your hands are quite skilled with the lute."

Florin smiles at Fosco, he reminding him of the halfling member to the Shields, Belkior in some ways and pays the man on the shoulder, "Some people were harder to choose for then others. You and Harvest were ones I was unsure what to get. However Harvest is someone who I believe the beads for meditateing purposes will come in handy for and I have noted your enjoyment of good food." Florin grins, "An I figured a good halfling should have a good set of silverware to eat with. I'm just greatful you gave us your whole name Fosco when we met or I wouldn't of had your initials. An of course I'm happy for my small talent in silver working."

Florin is ready and as normal has his gear with him. When he slips down in the hole with the others he looks to the door and frowns as he knows he can be of little help with this inless it need knocked down. For now he pulls his sword and readies himself just incase a fight is to come.

"The craftmanship is extraordinary, you are very gifted. Thank-you, I will treasure this. It is the only item I own of sentimental value."

Arminas wraps the statue and places it carefully in the bottom of his pack.

Arminas moves down the stairs and is startled to see the sconce light up.

"Forgive me Harvest, I was wrong. This is much more than an old store room. I wonder if instead of opening this door we were to seal the passage. Preventing anyone from coming up this way would solve the problem I think. Unless there are creatures who would be impossible to seal out of the tunnel."

Arminas frowns.

"I am afraid I know little of what dwells underground, except for badgers. Here, let me once again search for tracks to see if anyone has passed this way recently."

Arminas once again searches, this time with more care as to be able to discern if tracks are upon the path.

Florin listens to what is said and frowns some as he closes his eyes, thinking before speaking up, "Is the stone that lit up like a door knob?" Florin shrugs and smiles sheepishly, "Might sound kind of dumb but just thought maybe it was giving a clue to turning something also or such."

Florin hopes not to get laughed at on the idea as he just thought it was worth a try.

As the small landing begins to get crowded, Any , Arminas , Davros , Harvest and Fosco begin searching for secret or hidden doors and as Fosco and Arminas learned when searching the door, there are no discernible exits other than through the stone door ahead.

Lorth takes up a defensive position on the stairs, making themselves ready should the need arise.

After Harvest reads the message off the door, Lorth takes some time to think about the words.

Lorth watches.
Any watches.

Just as Arminas moves back to the steps for some fresh air Harvest twists the sconce. Turning it to the right, you hear first nothing. Then you hear what sounds like a swooshing sound then rock scraping on rock then a few clicks and then, a hum. About 30 seconds later the stone door shakes a little then begins slowly moving to the left. The scrape of stone on stone, long since standing sounds irritating to most, causing you to pull your hands up to muffle the sound coming into your ears.
The first thing to assault your senses is the smell. The smell of centuries old must and dust emanating out from the room. Then, a sound. Horrible sound. Like of a dog moaning just before death overtakes it. Then, all light, the blue light from the sconce, and the torches you carry, both normal and magical, goes out.
Then, just as fast as it took your lights to go out, the room beyond lights up.

Directly across from you, approximately 30 feet across is a bookshelf. from ground to the ceiling some 20 feet up, filled to overflowing with books and scrolls and loose papers.
On the left and right wall, some 20 feet across, are writing tables with benches. 5 on the left wall, 6 on the right with ink wells, quills and papers strewn on top on all save for 2. (one left, one right)
A dusty, yet discernible rug covering the whole floor can be seen, and felt once you step into the room and at each corner is a sconce like that outside the room, but instead of the blue light these sconces produce normal light like that coming from a torch. Enough to bright the whole room.

Just inside the doorway, to either side of the door is a chest. Wooden and iron bound in relatively good condition.

"A room!" he calls. "Ancient and filled with tomes and charts. We enter."

With that the dwarf pulls his axe and advances until he straddles the threshold.

Bralin inspects the door that slid away - its thickness, its composition.
"Fosco, is yon chest trapped?" he asks, pointing to the one just to the left of the door.

If not, the dwarf tests the weight of the chest. He wants to get a feel for how fast he can get it in position to block the door should it slide back.

Harvest and Any enters the room first. Upon walking up to the bookshelf you see many books and scrolls. Most books written by people you have never heard and maybe a few you have. Just at first glance, without taking the time to look, you see alot of works on Agriculture and Biology, some on Warfare, and some on Religions just to name a few. Just as you reach for what seems like a spellbook, you hear a loud EXPLOSION from the doorway.

Davros enters and uses his detect magic on the room. Many scrolls and books on the shelves shimmer with magical auras. As well does the ink wells and quills.
Turning to look at the 2 chests, just as Bralin hefts one to test the weight, you see a glow of magic as the trap goes off.

A lightning bolt shoots out from the chest, destroying it in the process, and slams into the chest of Bralin.
25 hit points of damage. Reflex dc16 for 1/2, rounded up.

Fosco, Lorth, and Florin are all thrown back from the concussion of the blast.

"We are not pressed for time," she observes. "Might it not be wiser to wait until Fosco Loamsdown completes a thorough and unhurried search? What do we have to gain from haste?"

Davros
Tuesday December 12th, 2006 10:46:08 PM

"Agreed." Davros then turns to focus his detection upon the other chest, the doorway and along the walls.

"Are there any other doors?"

Looking at Bralin with a mix of worry and apology I shrug. Haven't checked it yet.

Without being told to I move over to the other chest and examine it for traps.

Any drops to the ground as the chest explodes in Bralin's hands.

"I agree. Before we destroy anything else, and maybe get someone killed, let's take a little more time to check things out before we start moving things around."

Seeing that Bralin is at leats alive, he moves closer to the Dwarf.

"Do you require more healing? If not, then let's let the others search more fully, while we stand the guard."

Having said this, Any looks around the room once more.

Wednesday December 13th, 2006 12:20:04 AM

Arminas is knocked back by the blast, and his hands rise to his ears. Luckily, he is unhurt. Perhaps if he does not add to the comments about Bralin's lack of care he may remain so.

So, he stands and looks into the room.

Lorth
Wednesday December 13th, 2006 7:51:57 AM

Lorth flies into the hallway trying to break his fall with his arms. When the dust settles he picks himself up and orientates his senses. He then looks back into the room to make sure everyone is ok. Seeing that his friend Bralin is none-worse-for-wear he breathes easier, again taking up his guarding spot near the door.
He watches Fosco anxiously...

Bralin eyes the halfling after being knocked to the ground and having his chest hairs singed badly from the explosion of electricity. He doesnt have to say anything before Fosco is squirming to do his unvoiced bidding.

Any's search of the room finds there are no other doors or secret doors be in this room.

With a not so satisfactory look on his face, maybe from the last chest mishap, Fosco checks out the remaining chest. Does not seem to find anything that would constitute a trap and Davros doesnt detect any magical auras surrounding it either. It also does not appear to be locked as there is no padlock where one should be.

Florin, Lorth, and Arminas all stand outside the room, at the doorway peering into the room. Harvest watches from a safe spot.

From up the tunnel you hear someone shouting: Is everything ok down there, do you require assistance?

Arminas
Wednesday December 13th, 2006 11:34:30 AM

Arminas stands guard by the door, hoping those who know magics and traps can make the room safe. Hearing the question from above he responds:

"Everything is fine, just a lightning bolt from an old chest. I don't think we require assistance, unless someone desires to check the next chest. Hopefully we will be back up soon with news."

Harvest
Wednesday December 13th, 2006 12:10:48 PM

"Davros Sapphiredge," Harvest addresses the mage from without the depths of his concentration, "you may wish to give this particular book a thorough examination. It appears to be a spellbook, and as such, it may be protected by magic."

Harvest begins collecting the papers strewn across the desks with the full intention of withdrawing from the room to examine them above. Then her attention is drawn to the two desks that have no papers scattered upon them. Further, she notes, that there are only five desks upon one side whereas there are six upon the other.

"Does anyone else find this unusual?" she asks, revealing her observations to the others.

She shuffles to the two desks, clear of paper. Without touching either, she examines each to see whether the writing surface might be tipped up.

"Perhaps, there are no papers upon these desks because for some reason they must be tipped so that papers would slide off," she observes.

Then she goes to stand in the space on the Left Wall, where a sixth desk might stand.

"'To go left you must go right,'" Harvest Moon repeats. She turns, and points to the empty desk upon the right hand wall. Then she turns back to point at the space of wall directly before her. "I wonder why there is a desk missing here?" she asks.

Question: With the desks numbered 1 to 5 on the Left Wall and 1 to 6 on the right, 1 being closest to the door and moving outward, which are the desks that have no paper on them? Left#2 Right#2. Which is the space with the missing desk on the Left Hand Wall? #6.

Moving up to look at the desk Harvest is standing by, Any wonders along with her about the placement of the desks, and the absence of papers on these two at the end.

Without touching anything, Any looks carefully at the desks.

"Harvest, perhaps we should have Davros and Fosco both look more carefully at these before we do anything."

"Aside from the various books and scrolls, I don't believe there is any more magic about the room. Nor upon the second chest, he adds with a sidewards glance at Bralin."

Davros begins to examine the book and any other glowing scrolls or books. "This is all very interesting, and I could probably spend the next month enjoying reading every last scrap of paper in this room, but this treasure belongs to the elves. I am sure they would be able to use any funds they could obtain from selling this stuff to financially support their new town. I'm sure the elders would like to take a look, but first we must be certain the area is clear."

Davros moves and begins to examine the desks.

As everyone seems to be enthralled with the contents of the room, Arminas adds:

After the first desk, when Harvest begins collecting them, the papers disintigrate in her hands. You realize that age played a part in it, so after it, I am sure you chose not to touch any more of the papers.

Lorth and Florin hang back outside the room, watching.

Bralin stands there, getting his bearings after taking a lightning bolt to his body.

Any moves to the opposite side of where Harvest is, and without touching anything begins looking at the desks and the papers laying on top. Most of the papers are so worn with age, that any writing that was on it has long faded away, or is smudged past comprehension. Some papers stand out clearly, but the wording is beyond understanding to you.

Davros examines the books and scrolls that, with his percursory detection comes up glowing.
Davros' eyes only Highlight to display spoiler: { Roll me a will save, dc19.

}

Fosco goes from the chest to the desks and begins searching them without touching the papers for fear of ruining them more.
Will require approximately 30 minutes time for Fosco to search all 11 desks thoroughly.

Arminas repeats yet again his discomfort in regards to the wailing heard as the door was opened.

"We have found a room!" Harvest Moon cups her hands and calls back, adding to the words of Arminas Calaelen. "It will take some time to investigate. I will come up momentarily to describe it more fully to you. But, as Arminas Calaelen has already explained, we have encountered some danger, so please do not descend until we had found it to be safe."

"I will return above until Fosco Loamsdown has finished his examination," she says. The brown girl exits the room, but stops just outside the threshold. Her eye follows the outlines of the doorway, up, across the top, and then down again.

"I had thought the sound earlier no more than old air escaping through the door after many years, Arminas Calaelen," she says. "You don't think that perhaps we may have released something into the land above when we opened the door, do you?"

Idle speculation, however, is no more than that. Only time will reveal the secrets of the room. Harvest crouches into position, before running pell-mell up the stairs to leap up and catch the edge of the hole and scramble her way out.

Florin ponders things before calling on the power of his god as to allow him to detect evil in this area. He wonders if he should of done that sooner but leaves that thought as he trains his thoughts to the task.

The mention of the moaning also makes him do the detect evil search and he also replies to Arminas, "I'm rather hopeing what we heard was some type of machinery like that of the door opening."

Arminas
Thursday December 14th, 2006 7:34:06 PM

Arminas shakes his head at Florins remarks.

"No, I remember it quite clearly. There was the sound of machinery, a scraping sound and then about half a minute later the door starts to open. Remember, it made a very annoying scraping sound as it opened. Then the smell of old stagnet air and mold came through the open door.

After that, there was the terrible moaning sound. It sounded as if something were dying. I don't think a door could make that noise. Perhaps Bralin has a better sense, as I do not know what dwells below.

Well Bralin, what is your opinion on the sound."

As Arminas speaks, he is surprised to see Harvest race past him to the exit.

"Hmmm, do you think we should follow her?"

Harvest went to let those above know what we have found. Let us search carefully to avoid any more detonations like Bralin experienced."

So saying, Any continues to look carefully at the last two desks in the row.

[OOC: There are still lots of people without power here in the NW, and I guess BigTim is one of them. I'm one of the lucky ones; my power was only out for about 6 hours. Anyway, on with the adventure!]

Davros examines the book he found and accidentally triggers a spell! The area around Davros suddenly ignites with a whoosh!, and Davros takes 13 points of fire damage (Reflex save DC 19 for half). [OOC: I know BigTim said Will save, but I had no idea what spell he was looking at so I made it a Fire Trap.]

Harvest calls up her findings and scrambles up out of the hole. Several of the elves lend hands to help pull her up. "Is anyone hurt?" one of them asks.

Florin reaches out his senses, detecting for evil but finding none. At least, none within his range.

Arminas debates whether to stay down here or follow Harvest back to the surface.

Any makes a cursory search of the other desks, but notes nothing out of the ordinary.

Bralin goes through a mental list of the harmful types of undead he knows of. He realizes that anything truly malevolent would have attacked the party right away, and that many of the greater undead do not venture out in daylight. Perhaps the sound you heard was a mere remnant, a memory of someone who once used this strange underground room.

Or perhaps it was something you're just not familiar with...

Any instinctively ducks when the fire trap goes off in Davros' face.

"Are you all right? I feel that we should leave this room. There is evidently a great deal of magic in this room, and whoever left it protected it as well. Let us leave for now, and let those who are better equipped to do so disarm and search this room."

So saying, he sings a minor melody under his breath as he takes Davros by the arm (CMW for 11 hp), and leads the way out of this room.

Once on the surface, he explains what they have found.

Arminas follows Harvest and Any to the surface, and breathes deeply the fresh air. Looking up, he can see Ewan flying in lazy circles.

Why anyone would want to live underground is beyond me.

Speaking to the elves, he adds:
"It is as they say. Probably it would have been best to have sealed the tunnel, but now I am unsure."

Harvest Moon winces as the sound of a flash comes from the hole behind her. (Listen 25)

"I think that we are well enough," she replies to the elves. Squatting low, she turns her head and attempts to see back down the stairs. "But the dangers below are significant and very clear."

She removes a rope from her haversack and plays it out, down into the hole before searching for a place to which to anchor it.

"I do not think that we can afford to seal the room and ignore it, Arminas Calaelen. This room is so unusual that I cannot help but think that it is in some way connected to the attack of the bears. I think that we must investigate the room below in order to ensure the safety of this elfish town."

Davros yelps as the flames engulf him briefly. "AAAH! Curse me for a novice! I should have checked it for magic wards. I'm allright. Thank you Anthos for the quick heal. Although I deserved to keep the wound as a reminder of my own clumsiness."

"I would like to suggest that compared to the elves, we probably ARE the best equipped to deal with, and disarm the traps in this room. If we leave any intact, Do we dare trust that none of the curious elven children will sneak in here and activate something? I do not want any unnecessary blood on my hands."

With that, Davros activates detect magic again and examines the spellbook for any more auras.(WITHOUT opening it! :) )

More cautious now, you continue your examinations. Fosco finds and disarms a couple of traps. Davros detects no further auras on the book he holds, but Abjuration auras on a couple of other books in the room promise a lively time to come. Florin still detects no evil, however.

Up above, Arminas is all for re-sealing the underground room, but Harvest is not so sure. She gets out a rope and looks about for someplace to anchor it. There is a likely-looking boulder nearby.

The elves, for the most part, seem content to wait for news of your discoveries, but one or two display an almost Halfling-like curiosity. "What did you find?" a young woman asks eagerly. "What's down there?"

Harvet Moon circles the boulder, pulling the silk rope behind her. She knots a sliding loop and draws it tight. (Use Rope 20)

"It is no more than the single room," Harvest replies. "So far that is all that we yet know. It is as Anthos has described. I do not believe that there is any more that we can tell you about it before it has been made safe to read the books and otherwise explore the room."

"It should not be too much longer, I do not think. But that is best left to Fosco Loamsdown to decide. It appears that he is well versed in such things."

How was your hunt?

Arminas rubs Ewans feathers and tries to gain the desire to go once more below ground.

Arminas looks at the rope work and adds:

"Nice work Harvest, it should hold well."

"Let us wait a moment as you have suggested. I know I cannot do more than I have done in the room below untill it has been cleared, and Davros and Fosco are the most able to do that task."

So saying, he seats himself on the edge of the pit, and calls down,

"How goes it? Can we help in any way?"
