Valdor looks around at the group and smiles. He says aloud so everyone can hear,"It is time to finish what we came to do. We have all worked well together and will need to do so again to defeat this menace. This dragon will be much tougher than those three reds were.

Just a couple of things to remember, hit hard and fast. There can be no hesitation on anyone's part. I will try to draw this dragon's main attacks to myself to give everyone a chance to attack unmolested. Look out for your companions and communicate when something happens. This dragon likes to drown its victims, so it is likely to dive into the water after snatching someone in its mouth. We must be ready to react.

No matter what happens, I am proud to have travelled and fought with you all as my friends. While we may have had a minor disagreement, it is my pleasure to name you all as friends.

Mages and clerics, you will need to cast the shorter duration spells just before combat. Some of the longer lasting spells, we can cast now or when we get to the entrance. I leave it to you to decide what to cast and when. If we succeed, and I believe with all my heart we will, we will find his treasure as a group and get what we can. When he dies, we will need to hurry and do that. Let's go kill this evil monster."

Nick's thinking is along the same lines as Bertram, being a healer first and foremost. healing and protection. Let the big lions roar, while the clerics did the patching up. It seemed to work.
He's intending to cast some form of protection while they're all together, probably at the entrance to the lair.

And so, the group ventures forth, eventually arriving at the plateau that contains the entrance to the dragon's lair.

Up here in the foothills, the air is cool and the breeze is strong. In the distance below, the group can see the three ships sailing outward onto the lake, accompanied by fish of some kind that leap in and out of the water.

Behind the plateau to the east, the ground rises further, eventually becoming mountains of some size. Mordrid and Olana both see tracks leading further up, as if heading for these mountains. They're big, human; not those of the groups earlier scouting party. The barbarians perhaps? Those who had elected to explore this land further?

As for the plateau itself - a shelf of pale rock approx 60ft square, it is pockmarked with small depressions, and everyone must watch their step. At the approximate centre lies the 25 ft diameter large hole.
Tiny plants are clinging to it's edges and part way down. It's walls look knobbly and climbable, and after a 40ft drop, it seems to level off and become hidden in gloom.
At the edge of the hole, the scent of acid and rot wafts up from below

Milo peers down into the hole with a look of lesser enthusiasm. With a deep sigh, the halfling quickly changes out his boots of speed, placing them in his haversack, for slippers of spider climb. "If nobody minds, I think I'll have a quick look down the hole."

Valdor peers over the ledge. He frowns when he smells the awful odors and says quietly,"Now is the time for any long lasting spells. Cori, I'll take a stoneskin, if you don't mind. And whatever other spells will last for a long while. We don't know how long it will be before we fight, so we need to be cautious with our spells, but we don't want to get surprised and not be ready either. He'll know we are coming before we get to him."

Valdor waits for Cori to cast on him, then starts down the side that will turn into the roof at the bottom.

He does one more check to make sure his bow and arrows are good and pulls out 4 rods from his quiver. "These might make the trip down go a little better." He hold them up for everyone, "Immovable rods."

Ve gazes down the hole with his Darkvision even as Milo begins to dscend. "You know Milo he'll know you are there almost as soon as you pop you head in?" The cleric is sliding on his full faced battle helm even as he says this, but careful eyes spot the hint of a smile. Ve then closes his eyes briefly and holds out his hand in gesture of a group blessing, "Domi bless us, keep with us and allow us all to pursue this foe where ever it may flee. Grant me the wisdom and courage to aid my comrades in thier needs." Looking to Valdor and partially to K'Nara, "I can bless two of us with Freedom of Movement now and at a moments notice grant 2 more the same if the need arises. Before we go down we really need to set our roles in this combat. Mine, will be between the two of you, Valdor and K`Nara, which I assume will be directly before the creatures maw."

It's not demeaning of her abilities, but I can simply handle more punishment. I won't put you or Mordrid up there either. You guys need to kill him while he attacks me."

Valdor says over his shoulder as he's climbing,"Oh, I don't doubt you, but if those reds were working for the black, he's probably much worse. Besides, my paternal instincts are kicking in these days. And with us soon retiring, it will humor this old man to be in front of possibly his last dragon. Of course, any time you face a dragon, it could be your last time, I suppose. Anyway, you are soon to be celebrated and elevated to Dragons, and how would it look if your group showed up and you were dead? And while I was with you, no less?! See, this way, if I get caught, you will have saved me. I like that story."

He's glad he's down a few feet, as his eyes water up at some of those thoughts.

Cori nods her head as they start to prepare for the coming fight. She moves around the group adding what little protection that she has to those that she chooses. Two of her spells are powerful enough to effect the whole group before they start to break up. "I also have the ability to increase the chance for extra damage...anyone interested?" She will apply keen to anyone's weapon that can make use of it. "Once we all get down there give me a couple of minutes to pump out one last spell that will make life easier for the whole group." She intends to cast a haste spell that will allow a lot of the fighter and others looking for damage to move faster.

"Are we all prepared, then?" the blade singer asks aloud, looking to see if there's anything or anyone they'd forgotten. Then she adds: "I'd think that Milo may benefit best from that Greater Invisibility...him or Ingrge..."

Once all the spells stop flying, K'Nara descends using Falin's offered Rods and/or the rope as needed.

Olana braces herself before descending into the dark hole, taking on the spells offered.

"All this will make my hair curl," she says with a grim smile, before thanking Ingrge, Cori, Nick and Aeralia.

She then watches Milo dexcend into the gloom for a moment, before lodging her grappling hook in a crevice and climbing down via rope.
She's tempted to say "Race you," to Falin, on the way down, but instead she just smiles.

(( Welcome back everyone! Hope you all had a good holiday break :) ))

The group make their way down into the gloom, some floating gracefully, others climbing nimbly, some collecting a few scratches on the way down as climbing is obviously not their forte.

During the descent, the smell increases in potency, catching in the back of the throat, perhaps making one wonder just exactly what's down here.

Milo is the first to land on the tunnel floor, followed shortly by the others. Straight ahead is a high arch of darkness and the sound of dripping water.
However, the downward angle of the tunnel floor is a little more apparent than perhaps it should be, for there is a slight glow ahead, that dances slightly. Those with low light vision will recognize that it is distant torch light coming around from a bend in the distance, maybe 80 feet away.
Odd? Maybe.

The tunnel ceiling looks to be about thirty feet high.

Upon landing, the ranger casts 'protection from acid' on himself. (I will cast more on the following rounds)

The ranger, with movement left, decides to consume a potion of 'water breathing'.

With a thumb over his shoulder, he signals to Cori that he would like a keen spell on the arrows in his quiver. (Will that stack with the arrow's current +5 enhancement? If not don't bother)

Loud enough for the others to hear, yet soft enough not to reverberate down the cave, "Don't cast invisibility on me. We need a rally point, and the dragon will need someone to focus on."

"Before we advance, let's get some more spells up." DM, if allowed the time he will cast : detect snares and pits, cats grace, bears endurance, resist acid on two others, dark vision and freedom of movement.

Ve lands but remains on the carpet. During the dscent he casts Spell Resistance on Father Nicholas, Aerlia, Cori and himself. SR 34
He then places Freedom of Movement on Himself and Valdor.

The group makes final preparations and starts to head down the tunnel. Shadow shrinks back abruptly as Ve's lighted shield pushes forward. The tunnel now appears ahead as almost cylindrical and grey-walled.

As for that light ahead - the group come across a torch laying on the ground. Was it left there to light the way? Or dropped unintentionally? The way leads on down, with slight twists and turns. In places, the walls seem moist, and the temperature levels off to a standard 50 degrees.

Suddenly, a sharp bellow of pain - "AAARGH!" can be heard from further underground.

Valdor, literally buzzing with magical energies has an almost bewildered look in his eyes. He says quietly to Ve,"I feel like I am floating with all these spells going. We need to be ready to counter a Dispel Magic, in case he is ready."

He turns to Aerelia and asks,"Will you be able to cast that Wall of Force, should he breathe down this tunnel at us? It would really be good to have that ready, if you can."

He then says quietly,"Dahlia, you and Milo take the point and watch for traps. Ve, K'Nara, Gunther, and myself will come next. Mordrid, you, Nick, and Bertram have the rear. The others fall in between K'Nara and Mordrid. We need to keep a little distance between us, maybe five feet per group, just in case the ground falls out from under us all. We can't just rush in, but we can't waste these spells, either, so let's move. Mordrid, keep an eye out above us and behind us, my brother."

He turns to Cori just before moving and mouths and smiles. It's a smile of contentment, that his heart after so many years, is at peace. No troubles line his face now, just peace. He blows her a kiss and then turns back and nods to Dahlia.

The smell of acid in the air is strong enough that Falin swears he can taste it in his mouth. Falin draws his bow and readies an arrow. Nothing good can come of this he thinks to himself. If things start to get dicey he will have to get off as many arrows as quickly as possible. He couldn't do alot of damage, but he was sure it could be annoying to whatever he fired upon. He stays near the rear to one side to try to get the cleanest shot possible.

Falin will pick up the torch and extinguish it. Placing it in his quiver he continues with the group.

Ingrge casts his 5 stone skin spells on Bertram, Mordrid, Falin Milo and himself. (all add an additional 130 hps) and then casts a few more odds and ends as he makes his way down with the rest of the group. placing himself in the second group so he can effectively reach bothe ends of the group, Ingrge walks along staff in hand. Using his unusual eyesight, Ingrge scans the passage and the cave for anything out of the ordinary. doing his best to ignore those that are accompanying him. Once at the bottom he contacts Mordrid and Valdor though hte link and then uses his spectral hand to cast two more spells placing true seeing upon Mordrid and Valdor (130 rounds)

As she waits for an answer she swallows a small vial of liquid and then looks back at her skulking partner offering him a small vial of liquid. Cori moves over to stand near Mordrid but instead of touching the arrows she touches his bow instead. "Your bow now has a better chance of scoring you extra damage in the fight." She then pulls out another spell that will leave the whole group hopping.

She moves ever so slowly to Valdor and taking his head in her hands kisses him solidly on the mouth. After a couple of minutes she pulls away. "That is for luck." Her cloak swishes as she moves off and starts to prepare for the countering of a dragon.

Amarth perched upon his Mistress's shoulder has been quiet during all of this and you get the feeling that he maybe a little scared. Cori's hand comes up several times to touch and scratch his head lightly.

The group get into formation and advance.

Dahlia and Milo are perhaps a little disappointed initially, as there are no traps, no pits, no funny business whatsoever. It's just a plain old tunnel with the sound of someone screaming at the end of it.

The tunnel floor flattens out, and the ceiling begins to rise abruptly, as though there is a cavern beyond.

However, the way forward is blocked - filled with a HUGE mass of deep purple, undulating skin. Right here the scent of acid and rot gives way to something more earthy. For here is a monster of some size - a gargantuan purple worm.

The entire group arrive just in time to see it swallow what looks like one of the barbarian warriors from the now-defunct Iron Fist!

Valdor whispers to Cori,"I don't believe in luck. But, if it makes you kiss me like that, I could start believing...be careful."

Upon seeing the worm, Valdor says,"Keep your eyes open for that dragon. This is probably his pet and it's a decoy. One of you spellcasters light up the ceiling and as far back in the chamber as you can! Everyone spread out to the sides of it and let's finish it quick, before the dragon shows up. If anyone still lacks protections, speak up now to one of the spellcasters!"

He moves around to the left of the worm they are facing, but stays a few feet away until he can get all his attacks off. As he moves, he looks around and up at the cavern with his new true seeing to see if the dragon is invisible and hiding.

Ve frowns, though none can see his look under the full helmet, at the sight before him. "I can do little in that regard Mordrid, but what I can do is try to keep those other men from getting killed." With Valdor moving left and keeping out of striking range, Ve heads straight in. Keeping on the balls of his feet he sidesteps rapidly as he closes trying to not allow the worm an attack of opportunity. He is not so successful [Tumble 8] Ve's course takes him to where the barbarians are making thier stand. His glowing hammer in hand and the cry of Domi on his lips, the Protector attacks.

Aeralia nods briefly when Valdor mentions to be ready to counter, then again when he asks her about her wall. "Which would you prefer me be ready for?" she questions, likely expecting it to be the wall. Once her task is assigned, she'll quickly conceal herself with invisibility, and try to stay as observant as possible, ready to erect a wall of force, should she think the need it.

She takes a few steps back as they come upon the worm, glancing about and keeping an eye out around and behind them for the dragon.

Ingrge moves forward, a grin on his face, as both K'nara and Mordrid suggest a mage take care of this problem.

"Yeah, Yeah," let's have the mage come up front and dispose of the big bad purple worm."

As he steps forward Ingrge activates the party's wand in his belt and gripping his staff firmly takes two solid swings at the worm discharging a spell through his staff with each strike. (2 Maximized Vampiric touch)

Cori simply shrugs as she slips a wand out of her pants pocket. She takes a not too particular aim at the thing and five missiles fire from the wand. It is not the most damaging spell but she had planned to pack more spells that would keep people alive than deal damage. "I have a countering spell ready." She adds this last through the earring that she wears and through the spell...if it is in effect upon her.

Amarth is still perched upon her shoulder and seems to be taking this all in stride. He may not look happy but he is still here.

Olana stares for a moment at the huge worm in the tunnel, but soon snaps out of it. mordrid was probably right in not dashing off toward it and letting the wizards have first crack at it, but then maybe a couple of arrows in it's hide wouldn't go amiss either. Should be easy enough to hit - size of barn door and all that.

Faced with the horror before them, the group moves into the attack!

While Valdor, Milo, Bertram, Nick, Gunther, K'nara, Aeralia, Mordrid and Lian move into position or prepare for the next wave, Cori and Dahlia hurls spells into the fray, and both Falin and Olana send arrows flying and embedding into the creature's hide, and Ve Mundr and Ingrge move right in for a direct confrontation.

The lightning spell flashes brightly, lighting up the immediate area, and from his current position, Valdor gets a momentary glimpse of what lies beyond - a sizeable area, a cavern, maybe a large pool and something organic and moving beyond. Hard to say if it was a dragon, or another worm.

The light is dazzling in such confined quarters, giving everyone spots in front of their eyes. It also lights the way behind, and both Mordrid and Aeralia get a good look at the path the group has already taken. It's clear and inviting - the way out.

Ingrge suddenly gets one heck of a kick of positive energy, that make his fingers tingle and his hair stand on end, and an earth-scented miasma surrounds him. he notes that the worm's skin colour has darkened.

Stood close by, Ve's momentum, coupled with the swing of the purple worm's head, has brought him face to face the the creature's open maw. He finds himself close enough to count the beast's teeth - three inner rings of small pointy incisors, and half a dozen large fangs attached to it's jaw. The stench coming from it is overwhelming, especially is the worm opens wide and tries to grab him!
(HITS AC 43. Rats!)

The creature's tail is now beginning to snake in from beyond and join in the attack.

Ve spins away from the worm's maw as it closes on him and then attacks continuing to protect those about him and using his knowledge of combat. His real job was not to take down the worm, merely keep the stupid creatures' attention. The adamantine hammer whips through the air in quick passing swipes. As the blessed weapon passes through armor, many apparent misses actually strike home. Blessed by the spell of haste, all 5 strikes land.

As Ve steps in for the attack, Milo sees his opportunity to strike. Valdor says loudly into his earpiece,"Ve, you just can't go rushing into relationships like that. Kissing on the first date, before you've even been introduced properly...whoa!"

He was going to stay out of the way and watch to insure the dragon didn't catch them unaware, but seeing the tail coming and Ve almost getting swallowed, well, enough is enough. Htumbles the few feet separating him from the worm and attacks, his swords glittering in the torchlight, weaving and striking with deadly efficiency and brutal strength.

'Second date, no tongue!' (HellBoy)

Once again, the tunnel erupts with light, looking not unlike a mid winter halfling party in Dirt City (after one of them invented something called 'fyre werks'. General consensus on the discovery - they'll never catch on.) All the missiles, lightning, blasts of cold and whirling blades leave nothing for those at the back to get their teeth into - although Falin's arrows sail majestically past Lian's left ear, the rings of teeth, and straight into the creature's gullet, embedding in the grey-lilac flesh beyond. (Mordrid saves his arrows?)

Close up, Ingrge, Milo, K'Nara, Valdor and Ve get a whiff of the smell coming out of the creature's split apart insides, which is a delightful mixture of a slaughter house and rather strong-smelling mushrooms.

And in amongst all this dead purple meat, it appears that someone - one of the human barbarians - is trying to claw his way out.

The way is now partially cleared to enter the cavern beyond. There's a feeling of cavernous size in there, and there are sounds, something big crawling or sliding closer.
Something shifts in the gloom - but it's hard to see anything beyond 20 ft or so other than dark shapes and a inky glint of water.

Watching K'nara and Valdor move in for the kill, Gunther is more than a little disapointed to find that the stupid thing is dead before he can even engage it. Still...their was that noise in the tunnel... Gunther turns to K'nara. "Miss K'nara, vould you like for me to fly over dis ting and see vat's on de oder side, or would you rather your humble orc set about clearing a path for the others?" Gunther winks mischieviously as he awaits K'nara's instruction. It's been so long since he got to wade into worm guts that he almost hopes she'll give the order to clear the way.

Jan, if it's ok, I'm going to assume that Gunther had the buff spells cast on him during the prep time, since that's what he would have done if his stupid human hadn't gone off and abandoned him. ;)

Cori moves off to the side and away from the main body of the group. She does not want to put herself in line for a large attack upon the large group that seems to start to gather together. She shakes her head and wonders how some will fair if an area attack comes real soon. "I wish there was not all this light...then at least I could see better." She is still not totally use to the light of the outside and the light being used to illuminate the cave is enough to set off her sensitive eys.

Amarth stays perched upon her shoulder as she moves to see if there is a way around the worm and to the other side. Both have a spell ready to be used at a moments notice and both know it.
