The Discovery

DM Kathy
Friday December 22nd, 2006 1:01:51 AM

Arminas reunites with Ewan and asks about her hunt. He is rewarded with a brief sensation of a full belly, and the incredible size and speed of the One That Got Away.

Harvest gets her rope into position and waits. In fact, most of the party waits as Fosco checks the room over. At length, he pronounces himself satisfied. "I think we've found all the 'suprises'", he says. "I've disabled all the mechanical ones, but those magic traps will want dispelling."

Still, the underground chamber is as safe as he can make it. There only remains the question of what to do next.

Harvest  d20+14=24 d20+14=15
Friday December 22nd, 2006 9:31:26 AM

Harvest Moon looks out over the hole, her nose questing as she leans outward.

"I think there are many things that we can do, Arminas Calaelen," she replies. "We should build or fetch a ladder so that people may come and go more readily while investigating this hole."

"Do you think that the dangerous books may be moved, Fosco Loamsdown?" Harvest Moon calls. "I have a magic scroll that will summon a servant to place the dangerous books into a chest. Once contained within a chest then they may, perhaps, be moved to a place where they can be dealt with. With all of the dangers cleared, the elves might then send a group of their own down to look at things."

"It may also be wise to send word of this to Jarlwolf. They may know of one versed in the lore of this area and may have an idea as to who might have built this room."

The brown girl draws back from the hole and turns her gaze to the opening of the excavation and the greater Wold outside.

"I think it may also be prudent to continue our watch upon the camp. Ensuring the safety of the elves is our original purpose." She takes a scroll from her haversack and lays it to one side. "Here is the scroll, Davros Sapphiredge, should you need to use it. I will take up the patrol of the camp again." (Scroll of Unseen Servant.)

Emerging back out into the open air, Harvest Moon breathes a sigh full of the peace brought by sunlight and bountiful wooded lands. It is unwise to judge all things generally by a few experiences of the past. And yet one cannot help but be influenced by such experiences either. The underground still holds dark memories, but so as not to judge Harvest turns her mind to walking. She walks the camp, greeting the elves in passing, and watching the surrounding for signs of threat or need. (Spot 24, Listen 15 /Nat 1)

Lorth
Friday December 22nd, 2006 10:26:39 AM

Lorth waits until everyone is ready to leave then follows them out.
After thinking about it a bit he says, "Perhaps there is some sage we could consult about anything that existed here in past ages?"

Any
Friday December 22nd, 2006 11:02:04 AM

As Harvest is speaking, Any nods his head,

Such wisdom in one so young.

As she walks away from the group, he takes a few quick steps, taking her by the hand, and walking quietly with her, surveying the country, the village, and the beautiful morning.

Davros
Friday December 22nd, 2006 2:31:10 PM

Davros accepts the scroll with a nod. "I believe it will be safe to move the trapped books and scrolls without the servant, but I will keep it handy just in case. I do have some ability to disarm magic traps, but it may destroy any useful magic as well. If everyone wishes, I will begin to try, or I can leave them for the elders to decide."

Florin Jadenth
Friday December 22nd, 2006 3:25:52 PM

Florin keeps his eyes open and waits to see what is done and said, his detect evil comes up with nothing so he doesn't comment on even trying.

As Florin waits he moves over by Lorth and speaks to him, "Interesting place all and all other then the traps. Someone or something deffinetly wanted to keep it protected."

Arminas  d20+10=28
Saturday December 23rd, 2006 1:49:28 PM

Arminas decides to leave the room for those who understand such things. He takes a que from Harvest, and walks around the camp enjoying the open air and his time with Ewan.

Harvest suggests a ladder, and hands down a scroll, but ultimately decides to return to the group's purpose in being there: security. She begins to walk the camp, searching for signs of trouble.

Any makes his way over to join Harvest. The two of you find several groups of elves, talking about the discovery as they continue their work, but you see and hear nothing out of the ordinary.

Arminas and Ewan also decide to patrol, although they take a different direction. You, too, see and hear nothing unusual.

Davros offers to attempt to neutralize the traps on the other books. He's also pretty sure the books can simply be moved without ill effect. Many of his companions seem to have wandered off, but Firon calls down, "Best to leave them I think, young sir. We can study them and see if we can find out what kind of magicks protect them."

Lorth and Florin made at once easy and uneasy by the absence of evil, wait patiently for something to happen.

Fosco gives the chest a kick. "No more surprises here, I think," he says. "Should I open it?"

Lorth
Wednesday December 27th, 2006 7:09:59 AM

Again, Lorth waits for all his comppanions to leave before he returns to the surface. He wouldn't want anyone to get left behind or need help and be alone.

Wednesday December 27th, 2006 11:21:33 AM

Harvest walks hand in hand beside Anthos. It is quite pleasant to walk thus, hand in hand. She smiles and greets the elves that they meet with all of the lightness in her heart that walking with Anthos brings to her.

Any
Wednesday December 27th, 2006 12:53:16 PM

As Any and Harvest walk the perimeter of the camp, he contemplates the mystery of the room they have discovered.

"Harvest, do you think that the owner of this room could still be around? Looking at the condition of things, it would seem to be quite old. Maybe this is the cause of the attacks on the village. Maybe someone did not want us to find this room."

Bralin
Wednesday December 27th, 2006 1:38:00 PM

Bralin isn't leaving quite yet. Like Fosco, he wants to see what's in the chest.

"Aye" he replies to the halfling.

DM Kathy
Thursday December 28th, 2006 1:07:07 AM

Humming to himself, Fosco gets out his tools and starts to work on the chest.

Bralin, Davros, Lorth, and Florin remain nearby in case of trouble. Up above, Harvest, Any, and Arminas enjoy the afternoon.

After several minutes of trying, Fosco makes a pleased noise in his throat, and the lock gives with an audible click! Fosco lifts the lid.

The shine of gold is the first thing that catches the eye, but there are also papers stacked neatly on one side of the chest. They seem to be in rather better condition than the papers that had been lying on the desks.

Lorth
Thursday December 28th, 2006 7:53:47 AM

Lorth watches Fosco intently, ready to move to his aid if needed.

Harvest
Thursday December 28th, 2006 10:45:26 AM

"I have had similar thoughts, Anthos," Harvest Moon replies. Dark contemplations for such a beautiful day. "But I do not think that we will know until the room has been made safe and we can read from some of the writings within."

"Perhaps even then we will not know. But if it is the case, then one can only be alert and wary now that the room has indeed been found."

Bralin
Thursday December 28th, 2006 11:00:46 AM

The dwarf looks appreciatively at the gold, but makes no move to grab anything, his instinctive caution reinforced by the traps already set off in this room.

Bralin looks to Davros.
"Is anything in there magical?"

If Davros' spell has ended, Bralin will cast his own Detect Magic and regard the chest's contents.

Any
Thursday December 28th, 2006 11:04:19 AM

"I believe I will take Moonshadow, and go for a larger loop around the camp. Maybe when I return they will know more about our mysterious room."

With an extra hug, Any leaves Harvest to do as he has said. He rides a large loop, and returns to the room area about an hour later to see what has been discovered.

DM Kathy
Friday December 29th, 2006 12:57:49 AM

Up above, the afternoon continues pleasant. The elves continue to go about their work, a new ring of excitement in their voices. Patrolling the camp, Harvest, Any, Arminas, and Ewan see nothing unusual or alarming.

Any takes Moonshadow for a ride, and finds his horse ready for a little exercise, but not inclined to overdo it. Moonshadow is far more interested in small patches of tasty grass and weeds than in really working up a sweat.

Below, Davros can see no magical auras within the chest. There is a substantial cache of gold, and the papers, whatever they may contain. There is nothing else visible.

Fosco begins cautiously poking through the contents of the chest, but finds nothing else in his cursory search.

Upon returning to the camp, Any makes his way to the buried chamber.

"What ho my friends? What have you discovered? How may I help?"

Any drops into the hole, and then walks over to the chest. Spying the papers within, he asks,

"Do these contain any magical aura?"

If not, he will attempt to read one of the documents, to see what may be learned from the writing. (I guess not, decipher script 5)

Harvest
Sunday December 31st, 2006 6:20:27 PM

A few circuits of the camp reveal little in the way of danger. Harvest Moon turns her eyes to the trees at the edges of the camp and ensures that the sharp-eyed elves are on watch.

"I go to offer refreshment to those working in the newly found room," she calls up into the branches of the nearest occupied tree. "I believe that we are mostly all gathered there should you need us."

Bread and sharp fragrant cheese with dried strips of meat from the bears that the group had slain a few days before. Skins of water from the stream complete the meal. It is a simple repast, but easily divided among many, and eaten while working.

"I have brought lunch, if you should wish to refresh yourselves with food and drink." Harvest places the food upon a fresh plank of wood. "Have you discovered anything new about the room below?" she asks.

Lorth
Tuesday January 2nd, 2007 7:53:16 AM

"Thanks you Harvest", Lorth says, as he accepts the food she has brought. Lorth sits on the floor and eats a bit while continuing to keep and eye on the his two friends that are searching the chest.

Bralin
Tuesday January 2nd, 2007 12:53:33 PM

Bralin shoulders relax a bit, as the dwarf becomes more sure of the relative safety of this chamber.

"Searching this room will take many days," he responds to Harvest. "Mayhap some of the elders wish to help?"

He joins Any and Davros in determining what the papers may have to say. He is not going to go grabbing treasure...just yet.

Arminas  d20+12=21 d20+17=32

Arminas reports back that all seems normal around camp. After eating a sandwich brought by Harvest, he says:

"Thanks. So Bralin, is it true that you have not been able to find another passage from the room? I wonder then if this was the cellar for a large building. Perhaps I will look around the area for signs of a settlement."

Arminas then looks about the hill the elves dug into in hopes of finding some clue to the strange magical room.

In the buried chamber, you examine the contents of the chest. The papers do not detect as magic, and they are in a language none of you recognizes. Examining them carefully, Davros comes to believe that they are in a very ancient form of Elvish. Perhaps some of the elders could be of assistance in learning more.

Harvesttakes a moment to prepare a light meal, which she shares with those of her companions who want it. It is a welcome break in an eventful afternoon.

Arminas begins examining the exterior of the chamber, and the hill around it, looking for the rest of the structure that once housed it. He finds nothing.

Florin Jadenth
Tuesday January 2nd, 2007 9:32:50 PM

Since it has been decided to relax alittle Florin decides to ask around and see if there is anyway of sending a note and maybe small gift back to where the group had came from while escourting the elves out here. Florin will explain of how he met Ivy back in the town they were at and he would like to send get a late gift as his tradition goes.

If this can be done then Florin will seek around the elven village since there has to be atleast a couple smiths that specialize in necklace, earrings and the like and will see about buying a necklace or set of earrings and then will wrap them and write a nice note to Ivy to be sent to her as a late Giving Day gift.

(Forgot Ivy when I did that before. If you allow Kathy, Florin will pay say 10gps for a necklace or earrings to be sent to Ivy, or give me a price as you see fit :) .)

Davros
Tuesday January 2nd, 2007 10:37:20 PM

Davros enjoys the meal offered by Harvest and thanks her.

"Since the room appears safe for the time being, does someone want to see if any of the elders or Grynntym would like to examine the contents? We should also consult with any maps we have access to. They may reveal the location of any other ruins buried under the ground here."

Harvest
Tuesday January 2nd, 2007 11:25:37 PM

Harvest Moon munches upon a chunk of bread into which has been stuck a piece of yellow cheese. She kneels at the side of the chest and reaches in to retrieve one of the papers.

"If they are elfish, Davros Sapphiredge, then the elder elfs may know of what they speak." With that she heads back to the mouth of the hole with the paper clutched in her hand.

Lorth

Lorth finishes his meal and stands to brush any crumbs off his clothing. He takes one last look around, decides everything is pretty safe, then heads outside.

Any  d20+5=16
Wednesday January 3rd, 2007 8:50:58 AM

Any approaches Florin later that evening carrying the new lute which the Paladin has given to him. He also carrys a small package.

"Florin, if you will allow, I would like to accept your gift properly now."

He hands the small package to him, and then begins to play.

"A gift has been given,
A debt is now owed.
None who are living,
Can lighten this load.

The debtor unshriven,
Seeks to repay
That which was given,
Before end of day.

But what price to restore,
Who owes such a debt?
Who should we implore,
So none will forget?

And so came to mind,
A pattern, a way,
To give back in kind,
Or so the songs say.

Give a part of your self,
For a gift made with skill.
Pay not with pelf,
For no coin fills the bill.

The gift that was given,
The debt that was owed,
Is paid by the giving,
A gift not bought with gold.

And so comes the answer,
To give in return
A gift that will stir,
And make the heart yearn.

A gift made with your hands,
To give part of your soul
Will meet the demands
And make patterns whole.

And so comes my gift,
With hope it will do.
To mend the rift,
It is given to you."

When he finishes his song, he says,

"The small gift is not much, but I hope you will accept it."

When unwrapped, you find the carving of the red dragon that Any has been working on. Although he is no master craftsman, you can tell many hours have gone into making this as lifelike and realistic as possible. The scales are in excellent detail, and the entire carving has been polished with some type of oil so that it shines almost with an inner fire.

He bows to Florin, and then carefully places the lute in the straps on his backpack.

Bralin
Wednesday January 3rd, 2007 2:06:50 PM

Bralin straightens up from his examination of the chest, and eyes the rest of the room.

"Tis no other passage," he tells Arminas. "Mayhap this be a secret cache from ages past?" The dwarf shakes his head, clearing his mind. Tis a mystery, no doubt.

The glint of gold provides more focus.
"Who has claim on this treasure?" he asks Any. "Us or yon elves?"

Any (2nd post)
Wednesday January 3rd, 2007 6:34:11 PM

"Truly Bralin, I do not know. The leves did discover the room, and have claim to the area through right of property for their new city, but we did take the risks of opening the room, and making the treasure safe to recover. Perhaps a finders fee might be in order."

Arminas
Wednesday January 3rd, 2007 9:50:46 PM

Arminas rejoins the group, and reports:

"I can find no trace of a settlement in this area related to this room. Are you sure it isn't formed by a people from below? Remember that strange sound we heard? I thought it came from beyond the room, but perhaps I am mistaken."

As talk of the treasure comes up, he adds:

"Well, it seems to me that we have done nothing more than what we promised. In short, we have done our duty. The room is in the elves land, and the contents belong to them. If they desire to give a reward for investigating the room then fine. I do not believe we should request it though."

DM Kathy
Thursday January 4th, 2007 12:56:29 AM

Florin is able to find an elven craftsman who has a plain but finely-wrought gold chain available. "I made it some time ago," the man explains. "Before--well, before. We haven't had much time to craft such pretties of late. I would gladly sell it to you, though."

Any comes to Florin with a reciprocal gift. He seems to think it inadequate, but he will probably find nobody there to agree with him.

Harvest and Lorth finish their light meal. Lorth heads outside, ever vigilant, while Harvest returns to the issue of the underground chamber.

It does seem an odd structure. It leads to nothing that you can see, and, although it is comfortably furnished, there is no "rest of the house." No kitchen, no bedroom, no parlor. Just this library or study.

[Anyone with Knowledge (Arcana) or Spellcraft can make a check.]

There is also the question of what to do with the gold--give it over to the elves, or keep it as the spoils of adventuring.

Lorth
Thursday January 4th, 2007 7:30:38 AM

If there is time left in the day Lorth summons Tobiasz and does his normal rounds of the settlement. He decides while riding that there must be more buried ruins in the area. Just one lone room seems highly unlikely.

Any  d20+5=15
Thursday January 4th, 2007 8:22:09 AM

Any does not have a clue as to what this room is, or why it is here. He goes in search of Harvest, who was taking papers to one of the elven elders. Perhaps they can fill in some of the blanks as to what is going on here.

Harvest
Thursday January 4th, 2007 9:37:33 AM

Harvest Moon has a smile for Anthos as he joins her in a search for one of the camp elders. She seeks out Tahlela.

"We found this paper in one of the chests within the freshly discovered underground room, Elder Tahlela." Handling the sheet with a care in keeping with the sheet's probable age, Harvest presents it to the elf. "Davros Sapphiredge believes the writing to be a very old form of elfish. The papers outside of this chest certainly appeared quite old," she adds. "They crumbled to the touch. I am sorry, but those now seem to be destroyed."

"We were wondering whether you could read this, Elder Tahlela. And whether it might tell us, in some way, of the origins of the room below."

"Mayhap this chamber served as a wizard's secret retreat?" the dwarf wonders. "A powerful wizard could teleport in and out. I have seen such at Floating City."

Until the question of ownership is answered, Bralin's work down here is done. He returns to the surface to see what the elves have to say on that question.

Arminas
Thursday January 4th, 2007 3:42:02 PM

After giving his opinion on the spoils in the room, Arminas decides to await further information outside with Ewan.

Florin Jadenth
Thursday January 4th, 2007 11:39:13 PM

Florin smiles and listens to what Any sings before unwrapping the gift and smiling gently as he holds out his hand, taking Any's forearm and gives it a small squeeze as a friend, "It is a great gift Any and I thank you my friend. I will cherish it, really."

Florin smiles again before gently packing the red dragon figure in his backpack and wraps it in his winter blanket for safty.

When Florin finds the elf he nods and looks to the man before pulling out 10gps and holds the money out to him, "Will this cover such a fine item? I understand that you haven't had time to make more, I mean with moving here and all so short time. I also know how to do some smithing and silver smithing also."

With the gold chain necklace now Florin has to hunt for someone who might be willing to carry it and a message to Ivy back where the group and the elves had came from. If he finds someone who will he will offer this person fair compansation for delivering the gift and note. Also adding to the note he hopes maybe Ivy could travel out for a visit or send word and he will see about getting her out to the elves settlement safely.

Other then this Florin spends more time with the group and on the gold he speaks up, "I would say the first decision should be to the elves. We unfortunetly destroyed some objects down there before which could of been important."

Florin speaks to Lorth later on, "Would you like to take a small ride around the settlement with me Lorth? I figure Ajax would enjoy a stretch of his legs."

DM Kathy
Friday January 5th, 2007 1:03:06 AM

Florin purchases the fine chain for 10 gold. Finding someone willing to take a message back to Jarlwolf is more of a challenge. The elves feel that they have left that life behind, and are enthusiastic about the new life they are building together. Plus, they have the maddening elven attitude that all things will happen in time.

At last, however, you are able to find an elf woman with a sweet tooth and a yen for the cinnamon buns from the Jarlwolf bakery. "I'm a disgrace," she laughs comfortably. "But at least it will allow me to do you a good turn." She agrees to go to Jarlwolf the next day, to buy some buns and deliver the message. She declines any payment.

Arminas and Lorth, each in his own way, enjoys the day outdoors.

Giving it some thought, Davros agrees with Bralin's statement. The room makes sense if it is thought of as a place to teleport in and out of. Some tucked-away study where a powerful spellcaster could study in peace.

Harvest approaches Tahlela with the papers from the chest. She examines them carefully. "I think your friend Davros may be right," she says at last, "though I am no scholar. Firon!" she calls. "Take a look at this."

Eventually, all three elders are called upon to look at the papers, and at length they agree that the writing is most likely an ancient form of Elvish. Unfortunately, none of them can make out more than a word here and there.

"We must ask the Greenmage when he comes," says Sivaine, "though this task may require more scholarship even than he possesses."

As the light fades, the elves begin to gather for the evening meal. The talk is all about the discovery and what it could mean for the future of the settlement.

Lorth
Friday January 5th, 2007 8:31:39 AM

After the excitement of finding the cache, Lorth goes back to his normal daily routine. He gets up early, cleans all his gear, summons Tobiasz then scouts the surrounding area. He is quick to help any elves he passes that look like they need an extra hand doing manual labor.

Any
Friday January 5th, 2007 8:45:04 AM

The explanation that the group has come up with for the room seems to fit, but Any wishes they could read the papers found in the trunk. It will have to wait. He goes on with the routine of guarding the elvish compound.

When time permits, he finds a piece of seasoned wood, and begins to carve. This wood is black walnut, and the dark grains soon begin to give way to Any's small knife, the fragrant shavings curling as they drop to the ground where the bard sits.

Harvest
Friday January 5th, 2007 9:55:43 AM

"Thank you." Harvest inclines her head to the three Elders. "Tomorrow, Alemi will grant me the power to read the pages. But though I may be able to read the words I do not know the lore. I will try to copy as many of the pages into Common as I can. That may help."

"If the Discovered Room was built to teleport into," Harvest Moon conjectures later in the evening as the light fades from the sky, "then why would the builders have constructed stairs leading to a door open by a sconce upon the wall? The quizzical phrase written upon the door also suggests that the stairs were not only used, but that people who would be expected to guess its meaning were anticipated."

"That is very curious."

Bralin
Friday January 5th, 2007 11:19:43 AM

The dwarf shrugs at Harvest's question. More time is required to study the papers and secure the opinion of the Greenmage. Bralin will contemplate the question once more information becomes available.

In the meantime, he too returns to his routine.

Davros
Friday January 5th, 2007 11:18:18 PM

Things return (more or less) to normal over the next few days. The location of the town hall is moved, so that it no longer will encroach on the underground chamber. A few more buildings are begun as well.

You continue to patrol, but see nothing more threatening than the occasional wild animal--all of whom seem content to stay away from the strange noises and smells of the new town.

Harvest casts her spell and is able to decipher some of the writing, although it is rough going even with magical help. The papers seem to belong to a mage named Ruasel, and contain notes on his magical research and a personal journal of sorts. The magical noes are particularly difficult to understand.

Grynntym is consulted, but admits that the papers are beyond his scholarship. He volunteers to take word of the find, however, to elven scholars in the Culverwood who might be of some assistance.

Florin's messenger returns with a hastily-penned note of thanks from Ivy. "It sounds terribly exciting there," she writes. "I shall ask Papa if I may visit. I hope he lets me."

[OOC: did you all make a final decision on what to do with the gold you found?]

About a week after the discovery of the hidden chamber, a delegation of elves arrives at the new town. Unlike many of your previous visitors, they wear frowns and seem displeased by what they see.

"You there!" one of them calls imperiously to Lorth, who happens to be on sentry duty. "Who is in charge here?"

Days go by, and between her duties at camp watch, Harvest Moon sets herself to tidying up things within the mysterious room. All of the papers are straightened and neatly stacked before being returned to the chest in which they were found. The gold, she counts and places into a separate sack before replacing that as well. The other papers are a quandary. Though scattered about the various desks, Harvest fears to touch them lest they crumble as the others had.

(What count did Harvest come up with on the Gold? Or did I miss that number from an earlier post?)

On the day in which the elfish delegation arrives, Harvest Moon is on patrol. Even from her place across the camp her eye picks them out as they approach Paladin Lorth. The tones of the voices bring a frown to Harvest's face even though she is unable to pick out individual words.

Paladin Lorth makes motions toward the camp and the elves follow behind him. With a feeling of unease, Harvest continues her patrol, leaving the greeting of the delegation to others.

Bralin shrugs off the gold. He'd like some, but cannot argue against the claim of the elves.

The dwarf returns to the etching stone in his off time.

Several days later, the arrival of the new elves breaks the monotony. As with every other newcomer, Bralin rises and follows them in.

DM Kathy
Tuesday January 9th, 2007 12:02:40 AM

When you counted out the gold, it came to about 3,000 gold pieces. A smallish treasure for up-and-coming adventurers like you, but a miraculous find for elf refugees uncertain how they are to pay for the town they have begun. They are overjoyed when they learn that they are to receive the bulk of the coin, but insist on giving you a 20% share (600 gold).

Still wearing disapproving frowns, the five strange elves follow Lorth to where Firon is directing a building crew. The delegation turn haughty sneers at Bralin, who follows to see what is happening.

The elves approach Firon and bow. Their conversation is in Elvish; anyone who understands the language Highlight to display spoiler: {"You are in charge of this...this undertaking?" the delegation spokesman asks.

"I am one of the elders, yes," Firon replies with dignity. "Firon is my name, and you are most welcome here. It is good to see our kin of the Culverwood once more."

"Hmm," the other replies. "Well. We have come becaue we understand that you have uncovered a valuable piece of our heritage in the region. We hereby request that you halt all construction until the find can be studied and catalogued."

Florin Jadenth
Tuesday January 9th, 2007 12:14:55 AM

Florin is interested in what is going on so also follows. He listens as he stands a small distance away and is glad for once that his father made him learn elvish when he was younger and as a human, it might serve better now as a elf.

Florin frowns at the demand though but stays quiet, thinking to himself that the group should be allowed to atleast build away from the ruins discovered while these other elves do their buisness but he sees no reason to but in at the moment atleast. He does look to his friends and his disapproval of what the elf said shows well even if unspoken.

Florin also thanks the messenger for the message from Ivy and is very happy that he may see her again sometime soon. He would vouch for her if she is able to come and surely with the help the group and he has done, that would be enough. He is also happy with the share of the money as it can be put to good use. (Also waiting to see what the split would be for sure, I would figure thats 600 to split between us all or we can give it to poor Fosco :) .)

Lorth
Tuesday January 9th, 2007 8:01:14 AM

Lorth stands by waiting to be dismissed after delivering the elves. He doesn't understand any of what they are talking about and looks to his friend Florin to explain.
"Florin, when you have a moment, would you be kind enough to translate.", he says.

Any  d20+7=9
Tuesday January 9th, 2007 8:35:51 AM

Any, hearing Lorth's request, translates for those who do not speak elvish. He too is not comfortable with the tone the elvish entourage has taken with these refugee elves. He is constrained to speak,

"Honored friends. While it may be true that the person who built this room may have been connected with your clan, we do not know that yet for sure, and these people her are elves too, so may have just as sure of a claim on anything found. Perhaps more so, since they have the ownership rights to this area, and are the ones who discovered the room, after what appears to be many years lost.

Let us all move to a more comfortable area, where we might sit and discuss what has been found, and what will be done with this find."

Any is trying to be very diplomatic, but his feelings seem to be overcoming his common sense, and are coming through in his words. (diplomacy 9!)

Arminas
Tuesday January 9th, 2007 11:01:21 AM

Arminas follows along and listens to the conversation between the elven visitors and the elders.

"Any here is correct, the elves themselves discovered the room. They have been careful to preserve it, and deserve thanks for their efforts in that cause. I have searched the area around the hill, and have not found any other evidence of a settlement. I am sure there is much to learn, and I look forward to more experienced eyes searching the room."

Harvest  d20+15=28
Tuesday January 9th, 2007 12:00:31 PM

From time to time as she continues her patrol, Harvest turns an eye to the gathering of elfish elders, elfish visitors, and her own Swords of Light. There is so much hope within her for the happiness of the elves. Ever since they had arrived in Jarlwolf after having been driven from their homes by Parnoth.

To help them and to see their joy and success had so many times set a glow within her heart. With a smile she recalls the looks in their eyes when she had returned her share of the six hundred gold. It is a good thing to live for.

But how had these elves come to be here at this time? For an uncountable number of times, Harvest returns to her memory of these new elves as seen from her distant persepctive, their body positions speaking their manner. (Sense Motive 28) Again she wonders at the coincidence of their arrival and that of the opening of the room below.

Bralin
Tuesday January 9th, 2007 10:03:17 PM

The dwarf's tactical instinct is to ignore the elves' taunts. Arrogance oft breeds overconfidence, which may be exploited.

Bralin listens to Any's translation without comment, and waits to see what transpires next.

Davros
Tuesday January 9th, 2007 10:29:38 PM

Davros speaks to his companions nearby after Any has translated for them. (hopefully out of earshot of the elves)

"This could be trouble. Elves can be very stubborn once they have set their mind upon something. If they think they have a claim on this find they will not give up on it easily. I am curious how they found out about it so quickly, we certainly did not have time or inclination to spread the word. We must tread carefully."

DM Kathy
Wednesday January 10th, 2007 12:55:42 AM

As the delegation of elves approaches, some of you are inclined to be suspicious of how they got here so quickly. Then again, you realize, it has been a week since the discovery. And Grynntym did say that he would bring word of the find to elven scholars in the Culverwood.

The delegates don't pretend to hide their surprise when Any addresses them. The spokesman turns back to Firon. "Does this half-kin belong to you?" he asks [still in Elvish, but I'll assume everyone is getting a translation]. "Surely even one so young should have learned by now not to interrupt his elders."

"This is Anthos Westar," Firon says, then continues in Common. "Any is one of the noble adventurers from Jarlwolf, who are pledged to protect us during our adventure. From all dangers." The last is said with a slightly challenging look at the delegation. "Here also are Florin Jadenth, Bralin Stoneminder, Lorth Jeradosta, Davros Sapphiredge, and Arminas Calaelen. Harvest Moon is on patrol."

Arminas speaks next, prompting another of the elves to step forward. "It is to be hoped that such is the case," she says in brisk Elvish. "We would like to see the site for ourselves, though, to ascertain whether any harm was done by--" her lip curls, "--unorthodox construction techniques. Further, all construction in the area must cease, as we have yet to determin what effect such...disruption may have on the valuable records preserved at the site."

Lorth
Wednesday January 10th, 2007 8:04:50 AM

Lorth stands by and listens to the conversation. He does not interupt or give his opinion as he beleives these problems are elvish matters and he will go along with whatever the town council decides.

Any  d20+7=15
Wednesday January 10th, 2007 8:37:00 AM

Any takes the rebuke from the elven spokesman without any exterior signs of emotion.

Who do these people think they are!

He reasserts what he has already stated,

"You have yet to prove to us that you have any claim on what has been found, or at least any claim greater than that which the community here has. As for my age, truth can be seen by those of any age, as well as rudeness. We are here at the request of this village to protect them, and this we will do, against all threats."

Having said this, Any steps back to stand near to Bralin, waiting for what will happen next.

diplomacy 15--still not being very diplomatic I guess :o)

Harvest
Wednesday January 10th, 2007 10:14:18 AM

With the occasional concerned look toward the center of town, Harvest Moon continues her patrol.

Bralin
Wednesday January 10th, 2007 3:13:58 PM

Any has his say, and moves back to Bralin. The dwarf, in turn, moves his hand with exagerrated slowness to the handle of his axe. His gaze never leaves the eyes of the lead delegate.

[OOC - How many newcomers are there?]

Davros
Wednesday January 10th, 2007 3:48:16 PM

speaking in elvish to the delegates:

"I'm sure we are all allies here. The elders of this town will not have any problem cooperating with you, and indeed requested your presence. The find however should be the sole property of this town. Look around you. These people have practically nothing. Any value this ruin may contain will help establish and protect this town."

OOC-the gold we received: if there is a party fund for buying cure wands etc. I will donate my portion to this fund.

Arminas
Wednesday January 10th, 2007 8:21:31 PM

Arminas nods to the elven strangers comments, and winces as the encounter take an aggressive turn.

[in elven]
"I am the ranger who has been assigned the scouting for these elves. As I have said, I have looked carefully around and there is no reason to stop all construction. I think Firon would gladly stop construction around the ancient room, as we all value knowledge from the past. Really though, you are making my companions nervous. Why don't you explain exactly who you are and what background you bring that can help solve this mystery. I am sure when they see that you mean to help, that they will relax. Really, these people don't understand our ways and I have found I must change my behavior so as to not readily offend them. Once you get to know them you will find that they are indeed very noble."

Florin Jadenth
Wednesday January 10th, 2007 11:46:53 PM

Florin listens to what all is said and sighs deeply, "No offense meant and since I'm not use to being a elf really but heard of how great, noble and carrying your suppose to be for each other. I think asking that all construction being done to be stopped is rather undiplomatic on your part let alone you can look at these people and should beable to tell they have little and being elves you should know what it had to be like for them to live among humans and such who seem to resent most elves, specially after the fey king stuff. We can only protect from so much where a safe place for them to hold up or be during any big fight would be needed, to ask them to stop building shelter is like sentencing them to death if anything bad happens. An also this goes for yourselves also inless you are a army in your own right and can defend yourself in the open. I'm a paladin of Domi, I pride myself on tactics, on warfare and say now that without proper defenses which these people are still constructing they stand little chance against any attack and this place has had some problems since we've gotten hear, dire bears and such." Florin turns his back on the elders who came and looks to Firon, "Miss, I'm going to take a small walk before my temper flies more. However I like to say so far you and the elders of this village and elves here themselves are fine people and elves that I'm proud to be helping. Your the type that band together to help each other and others and I believe you would help out even other races if they came and asked you honestly for help. Your a great example to your race."

With this said Florin walks away, he not wanting to cause any more problems then he already has but is quite upset with these visiting elders as the refugees have nothing but this village, all their hopes and dreams are set here and to get told to stop could be a devastating blow to them, specially if it's a long wait to start again.

Thursday January 11th, 2007 1:06:40 AM

[OOC: There are five elves in the delegation, three men and two women.]

Any speaks passionately in defense of the down, and moves to stand with Bralin. The dwarf puts hand on his axe.

The elf delegation looks a bit taken aback at this. "Well," says the spokesman to Firon, "your adventurers certainly have passion. Whether it is regulated by good sense remains to be seen."

Davros and Arminas speak up then, each offering well-reasoned pleas for a compromise. The elf delegates look thoughtful.

Then Florin speaks up, and the elves in the delegation begin to frown. The paladin ends his tirade by addressing Firon.

"Peace, good Florin," the elder murmurs. "Your fire does you credit, but we must take care not to burn those around us."

To the delegates, he says, "I belive our friend Arminas has the right of it. We can continue to build, away from the site, without disturbing its precious contents. Anthos had a good notion as well; please come to our fire and refresh yourselves from your journey. We have food and drink, and you can meet the other elders."

The delegation look uncertain for a moment, then their spokesman speaks. "Yes," he says, "we will join you for refreshment. Our discussion about the site is not done, however. We will not have you despoiling this priceless piece of our shared history, no matter how great your present need."

Firon, looking uncertain how to answer that, contents himself with a bow and a gesture for the delegation to come with him. As they turn toward the fire, Firon takes a moment to speak aside with you. "If you would like to accompany us, please do so," he says, low. "I should value your impressions of the situation."

Lorth
Thursday January 11th, 2007 7:32:36 AM

Lorth listens best he can to all his friends arguements. However he doesn't understand any what Davros or Arminas, but he stays attentive when he sees Bralin caress his axe.
He also notes Florin's temper and reminds himself that it is certainly not a virtue to let ones temper get the best of oneself. One must strive to control ones emotions and be evenhanded in all situations, Lorth beleives.

Any
Thursday January 11th, 2007 8:34:51 AM

Any gives a slight nod at Firon's statement, and with no other acknowledgement, follows along to the gathering. He thinks about calling in Harvest for this meeting, but realizes the necessity of maintaining the watch. For now, he will wait to hear what is said.

Bralin
Thursday January 11th, 2007 5:28:49 PM

Bralin smiles inwardly. Florin's love of talking did not diminish when he took his new form.

The dwarf blinks his eyes several times to get back to the task at hand. These elves speak quite openly of what they will and will not allow, and yet the warrior sees no indication of how they mean to enforce their statements.

Like Any, he follows and observes.

Harvest
Thursday January 11th, 2007 7:51:44 PM

It is with relief that Harvest Moon watches the group of elves along with the Swords of Light move toward the fire. A good sign, surely, that they will sit together by the fire and take in each other's company.

"Before wisdom may speak and wisdom may be heard, Little Boo, wisdom must be given the opportunity." Thus had been a very early lesson.

Harvest continues her patrol, heartened by this memory, and completely unaware of the actual tenor of the proceedings in the center of the camp.

Arminas
Thursday January 11th, 2007 9:13:45 PM

Arminas follows the delegation, continueing to speak in elfish:

I myself am from the Culverwood, just south of Merrydale. Tell me, what of Parnoth and his plans to enslave the elves? He took us into slavery, and we just managed to escape. Do the elves continue to flee? ..... (looking up with a hopeful gaze) .... Wouldn't it be wonderful if you were find knowledge in the ancient room to use against the green dragon?"

Davros
Thursday January 11th, 2007 10:04:49 PM

"Firon, perhaps the delegation will agree to compensate you for whatever artifacts they find within. Also, you should probably warn them that we are not sure if we have located all of the traps yet."

DM Kathy
Friday January 12th, 2007 1:29:11 AM

The delegates are ushered to prime spots near the cookfire and seated. The other elders are summoned from their tasks and introduced. In return, the delegates give their names and a little of their history.

Zalil is the spokesman, a person of some importance within his clan, accustomed to wielding influence and being in command. He clearly expects others to accede to his wishes, and often seems genuinely puzzled when they do not.

Verruonna is an important scholar among her people, and a cousin of sorts to Zalil. As you listen to the others discuss their scholarship, though, you get the feeling that Verrounna owes her preeminence less to ability than to connections. Nonetheless, the other scholars defer to her.

On'Azadre is a scholar-mage who seems to have a great deal of knowledge about magical theory. He is keen to get a look at what spells Ruasel may have been researching in this secluded chamber. He is nearly as arrogant as Zalil.

Malanessa is their linguist, and probably the most approachable of the five. At times, she seems almost embarrassed by the arrogant bluster of those leading the delegation.

Korasire is the youngest of the group, and clearly intimidated by the others. He is a scholar as well, although the exact nature of his expertise is unclear.

It is Verruonna who responds to Arminas. "The dragon seeks to bring the entire Culverwood under his rule, but finds that actual control of the area is...problematic. Especially since the Fae King's ascention," she says. "Some areas of the Culverwood remain much as they were. Though we are careful not to draw attention to ourselves." She directs a rather pointed look at the new construction.

Firon nods approval at Davros's suggestion, and indeed does mention to the delegation that there were traps in the underground chamber. The delegates do not seem concerned. "I've not doubt I can dispel any magic that lingers," says On'Azadre with a negligent wave of his hand. "We are more concerned about the ongoing construction than any remaining traps."

"But I think we can agree," Malanessa puts in hastily, "that our kinsfolk can continue with their building, so long as they keep well away from the find. We must allow them their homes, On'Azadre."

At length, Tahlela, Sivaine, and Firon are able to persuade the delegation that the continued construction will not disturb the site. They also give the scholars total access to whatever materials they wish to study, although they exchange some uneasy glances as they do so. You, too, can't help but wonder: what will they demand next?

Despite any fears you have for the coming days, however, the afternoon and evening pass uneventfully. You trade off on watch and patrol, so that Harvest, too, is able to meet the delegates. For good or ill, they seem to be staying on for a few days at least.

Any
Friday January 12th, 2007 8:39:05 AM

Any has heard enough to know that for now things are settled. He moves out to take over the patrol as Harvest comes back into camp.

Later, he will pass that duty off, and rest around camp, waiting to see what comes. He an be seen sitting by the fire, either strumming lightly on his new lute, or carving on the block of dark colored wood which he found. You cannot tell yet what shape the wood is taking.

Lorth
Friday January 12th, 2007 8:54:22 AM

Seeing he is of no use with the elves deliberations, Lorth resumes his patrols.

Lorth makes sure to check in more often now that the deligation is here, just in case he is needed.

Davros
Friday January 12th, 2007 7:54:58 PM

Davros listens with interest to the deliberations, but does not interrupt any of the elders or the delegates while they are speaking. He enjoys observing the elves' negotiation methods, and also observes the delegates and their mannerisms. He thinks carefully on all that they say, and whenever it is appropriate, he whispers translations to those of his companions who need it.

All the while, a curious rat sits on his hind legs on Davros' shoulder and waves his front paws around as if directing the meeting.

Florin Jadenth  d20+6=24
Friday January 12th, 2007 10:11:31 PM

Florin had heard enough earlier and goes about looking over the place some while the others join in on the meeting of the elders, he doesn't want his thought clouding the issue farther.

When he notices Any moving out to take patrol he moves up beside him and speaks to him, "I hope my words earlier cause the group no trouble. Sometimes my human temper gets the better of me. I just think that stopping all construction was abit much for these people. Anyway, why don't I take this watch and you can spend sometime with Harvest? I would enjoy the time alone to cool off more and before issuing a apology to our new elven friends. Diplomacy is a issue I might be trained for but not overly good at in certain cases."

Florin will move off to take watch if Any agrees or waits for a watch to come for him, which ever.

Later when Florin sees a good moment he approaches the elders who are visiting and speaks to them, "I'm sorry about my earlier out bursts ladies and gentleman. My friends and I have helped and watched these people work on this new home of theirs which has brought a light of hope to them that was almost missing before. I did not want to see that light vanish from these people depending on how long it took you to look over the items of the room. My words were spoken in concern for these people, for brothers and sisters of my kind now. You see, I was not always a elf but once a human but a run in with a artifact left me as you see me now. I have few problems with my new form as a elf but I have not adjusted to the way in which elves life, speak and act. However I am learning and just hope my words have not caused a distrust among us." Florin holds out his hand to any who will take it and speaks up once more, "A proper introduction I did not give before. I am Florin Jadenth, a noble from the Floating City and defender of Domi's faith and also beginning the path of the undead hunter."

Harvest
Saturday January 13th, 2007 4:14:06 PM

After initial introductions, Harvest Moon watches the new elves from afar. Had her experience not shown her the highs and lows to which all peoples might rise and fall, she would almost think these elves a different people entirely from the ones with which they have shared the past weeks.

Despite Pasix' admonitions against judging too swiftly, she finds herself thinking that Pride may in and of itself constitute an evil. Or, at the very least, be a close cousin.

In may way it is a comfort to have Anthos nearby. There is something so comforting about the blanket of domesticity. And yet the sight of the road to Magpie Crossing, even the steam as it rumbles over its stony bed, all remind Harvest of her pledge to the Walkers, and the need to tread the land.

Arminas
Saturday January 13th, 2007 6:01:54 PM

Arminas responds to Verruonna:

"It is good to know that the resistance to the dragon's rule is strong. I also agree that not calling attention to one's self is good. The strength of the Forest is the cover it provides. Yet you do not mean to tell me that this elven settlement somehow draws attention to the elves within the Forest. We are not even within the Culverwood, thanks to Parnoth."

DM Kathy
Sunday January 14th, 2007 11:55:42 PM

Over the next few days, you have the opportunity to observe and speak with the newcomers some more. They agree to allow the refugees to continue with their building, well away from the site of the discovery. The scholars spend many hours poring over the papers that were found, and carefully studying the layout of the room and its contents.

The days are getting noticably shorter. Although the weather remains warm, the first signs of autumn are in the air.

Two days after the elf delegation arrives, a small group of humans arrives from Jarlwolf. Among them are Ivy and a stern-looking man whom she introduces as her father.

The Jarlwolf folk are mostly there out of curiosity. They want to see the new town being built, and are also interested in the recent discovery. Zalil and his scholars are inclined to look down on these new visitors, but the refugee elders welcome the visit and patiently answer their questions about the town.

Ivy's father, Damicus, is more interested in Florin than in the new elf town. He spends some time questioning the paladin about his background, his family, and his plans for the future.

Harvest  d20+4=6

The people from Jarlwolf are a welcome sight. The last two days had been a frustration. Offerings of food and small attempts at conversation had not thawed the chill of the new elves from the Culverwood. (Diplomacy 6) Perhaps it is Harvest Moon's generally quiet ways. Or, perhaps they sense her disapproval of their lofty pride.

The news from Jarlwolf is also welcome. It is pleasant to chat with the new guests and show them the sights of the camp in between her daily patrols. It is with curious amusement that Harvest follows the courtship between Ivy and Paladin Florin. How different things become when one has parents. So different from how she and Anthos had so quickly grown together.

When the delegation from Jarslwolf arrives, Any does his best to help with not only showing them what has been happening here, but also in keeping them out of the way of the new construction. He can tell that Harvest is pleased to see these people. They are as close to a family as she has, and he is pleased to see her so happy.

He asks the new elven scholars if they have found anything of import in the papers, insuring them that he doesn't need to know any secrets, just wondering how their research progresses.

In his spare time, he continues carving on his dark block of wood. Spot check to revealHighlight to display spoiler: {The wood is taking on the appearance of a large black panther.}

He spends a few hours observing the delegation to satisfy himself they are not threats, and then ignores them.

In fact, other than his obligatory patrols, the dwarf has removed himself entirely from the sight of the village. He spends all his available time at streambed, carefully scratching on the ever-more-detailed diorama of a dwarven hall.

Monday January 15th, 2007 8:31:53 PM

Florin smiles seeing Ivy arrive and is abit suprised to see her father, maybe more so by the look on his face but he greets Damicus graciously, being himself and not trying to rub any extra diplomacy or such on it he talks to the man and spends time with Ivy also. Florin will tell Damicus of his adventuers is the Floating City and growing up as one of the only paladin's of Domi in that city. He also tells him of his noble Jadenth family, leaving out alittle on how he and his father may not be on best terms but alittle of that was settled before he left there. He also explains about his adoption of Jella, a orphan from the Floating City who is currently with his parents to remain safe in this time and his sending money back to her when he can also. When it comes to his future plans Florin smiles and looks around the camp, "I think we have more then enough here to do for awhile. once we are done here though I do not know, being a adventuer and someone who likes to help people and with a group of friends who are much the same, I suppose something will come up. When the time comes I have some skill in silversmithing and armorsmithing and Domi is known as a smithing god so I think smithing would be a good life when that day comes." Florin looks to Ivy though and smiles to her, "However, it would be nice to know I have some place and someone to return to once it's all done." Florin looks to Damicus and tries to learn more about him, his family and Ivy now. Florin is mostly being open and honest on everything and when he gets a chance he tells Ivy he hopes she enjoyed her gold chain and offers her a ride tomorrow on Ajax if her father allows.

When time comes Florin will see to his watch and he also checks in with his companions to see if he has missed anything going on also. He does take some time to talk to Bralin as he was thinking of his dwarven friend, "Bralin, I never got to ask you about this before but I was hoping if we could take watch together you might tell me some about your home. I mean being here among elves and away from your home for so long it must get pretty hard at times and I would figure even a dwarf gets homesick." Florin smiles, hoping to cheer his friend up some with atleast talking of his home. Florin smiles and also comments on something to Bralin, "Never admitted this to people before but since I started playing at smithing armors...I'm still a rookie at it..I've wanted to see how dwarves smith armor, I heard legends where a dwarf could be hit by a red dragon's flame and the armor still be intact. Unfortunetly the tales always say the poor dwarf doesn't survive but your kind must be master craftsman to succeed in such a feat if its true."

Davros spends the days helping out where he can with the find and keeping an eye on everyone who is examining the site.

DM Kathy
Tuesday January 16th, 2007 12:38:37 AM

The Jarlwolf group are interested in what they see, and the refugees clearly enjoy showing what they have accomplished. If the scholarly delegation is less than thrilled by their presence, they at least manage to keep it (mostly) to themselves.

Damicus is interested in Florin's tale, and shares a little of his own background. He is a former soldier (which explains where Ivy got her weapon training), and has served in several areas before choosing a quiet retirement in Cinnamon Valley.

The Jarlwolf visitors plan to stay the night and depart in the morning. As evening falls, Damicus ends his discussion with Florin and wanders off "to see what the others are up to." Ivy remains behind, and links her arm with Florin's. "Let's go for a walk," she says.

The rest of you continue with your watches, and chat with the visitors. As evening falls, you look to see a group of riders approaching. As they get closer, you note that four of the five riders are wearing the livery of the Jarlwolf militia, and that the fifth rider is a halfling on a pony. Closer still, and you recoginze him. It is the envoy, Remo Treadlefoot, whom you rescued on a recent adventure. But what in the Wold could he be doing here?

Lorth greets Remo warmly when he sees him. He then waits around to find out what business he has here.

Any
Tuesday January 16th, 2007 8:44:31 AM

Any stirs from his seat near the fire when he sees a new group of horsemen enter the clearing heading towards the settlement. As they get closer, he recognizes the Jarlwolf livery and the envoy Remo, and wonders what is happening.

He approaches the group, hails them, and then waits to hear the next piece of new brought by this group of visitors.

Harvest
Tuesday January 16th, 2007 10:36:38 AM

Harvest stands at Any's side as they greet the Envoy from Jarlwolf. It had been the halfling's skills at negotiation that had made him invaluable in gaining the trade agreement with Rowena. Harvest looks about the camp and her eyes fall quizzically upon the elfish group from the Culverwood as they continue their work in and around the underground room.

"Could it be that he has come to negotiate possession of the room, Anthos?" she asks in a quiet voice.

Arminas
Tuesday January 16th, 2007 3:22:16 PM

Upon seeing Remo and the militia men ride into the new town, Arminas comes in from his circuit duty. Still having nothing to say, yet his curiousity has gotten the better of him He climbs into a nearby tree and sits comfortably in a notch. Ewan settles in next to him, and together they await any news they may overhear from the lofty perch.

Florin Jadenth
Tuesday January 16th, 2007 8:15:17 PM

Florin enjoys talking with Ivy's father and gladly goes for a walk with Ivy, enjoying the time with her as he just talks about this and that and listens to her.

When he gets back and when he sees the arrival of more people he frowns and moves to join his friends, wondering what this batch of visitors might be wanting and hoping it starts out with less trouble and ends just as good as the elves who arrived so far.

Davros
Tuesday January 16th, 2007 11:21:34 PM

Davros introduces himself to Remo and gives him a warm welcome as he listens for what new news has been brought to the suddenly busy elven town.

DM Kathy
Wednesday January 17th, 2007 12:20:42 AM

Ivy, too, enjoys the walk with Florin. "Now that Father has met you," she says, "I may be allowed to come visit again. Just me." She gives him a coquettish look from under her lashes. "Would you like that?"

There is a stir in camp when Remo Treadlefoot arrives. He greets you all warmly, and introduces himself to the refugee elders, who already seem to know him by reputation.

"How go the talks with Parnoth's representatives?" Tahlela asks.

Remo's answer is forestalled by an outraged exclamation from Zalil. "What? Do you mean to say that this--this halfling is actually negotiating with the tyrant of the Culverwood?"

Remo smiles patiently. "We are not all warriors, honored sir," he replies in smooth Elvish. "Some of us must use our wits and our words to keep tyranny from our borders. Such is the choice of the people of Cinnamon Valley. Surely you do not begrudge them the right to make it?"

Zalil mutters something about pandering, but has no real reply.

"In fact," Remo continues, switching to Common, "the talks are what bring me here today. It seems Parnoth has learned of--a find?--near here, and is quite interested in it." He looks about, curiosity sparlkling in his dark eyes. "What can you tell me of this?"

Lorth
Wednesday January 17th, 2007 8:30:49 AM

Lorth is not pleased at all to hear that Parnoth has interest in this elvish village. He continues to stand by attentively and listen to the conversation.

Any
Wednesday January 17th, 2007 8:43:52 AM

"Friend Remo, there is no sense in trying to hide what you apparently seem to already know about.

In the process of building their new village, Firon's people have uncovered a hidden room. Zalil's delegation claim this find is their property, due to a possible connection to the original creator of this room. They are studying this site, as they are among the few who are able to read the script in which many of the documents are written. However, if Parnoth is interested in this also, there must be more here than was first thought. That beast does nothing without profit to himself, or unless this find might threaten his existence in some way. Whichever it is, we would do well to discover the source of his interest quickly, before he turns his full attention on this spot of the world. These elves have already been un-homed once, it would not be mete to have it happen again over some centuries old manuscripts."

Having voiced his thoughts, Any stands nearby with Harvest to hear what others have to say on the subject.

Harvest
Wednesday January 17th, 2007 11:45:22 AM

"Remo Treadlefoot," Harvest Moon begins, her concern is writ plain across her face, "could you tell us in greater detail to what extent that you feel Parnoth's interest in this room lies. I cannot help but think that you were sent to Parnoth because you have some skill in reading the Dragon's intent."

"I think Anthos is correct. I wonder if you realize the danger that you place these people in simply by knowing of this room. It will, I think, be very difficult to return to Parnoth, and withhold what you know. It forces us to move all things, but the most fixed of furnishings from the room and away from the town. It must be done to protect the elves."

Florin Jadenth
Wednesday January 17th, 2007 1:24:54 PM

Florin smiles and likes the idea of Ivy coming to see him alone sometime and if allowed gives her a quick kiss on the cheek since anything more might bring unwanted attention from her father.

Florin listens to what is being said otherwise from the halfling and looks about before sighing, "I must admit I know little of this dragon but what I have heard but fighting such a creature does not sound like fun and more then anything like a death sentence." Florin looks around and nods at Harvest's comment, "Moving the contents of that room sounds good. The people here are to happy and I think it would destroy some of them in spirit to have to leave here after all the work." Florin looks to Remo and holds out his hand, "It is a pleasure to meet you also and when time permits maybe you can tell me more of this dragon. Coming from the Floating City I know little to nothing of him beyond what people have said and most seem to whisper more then talk, kind of like speaking to much of him will summon him or something."

Bralin
Wednesday January 17th, 2007 2:34:41 PM

The dwarf listens carefully to the conversation. For adding Parnoth to the situation most definitely increases the level of risk in this defense mission.

"Tis folly to remain should the dragon desire this site," he points out. "If he is coming, the elves should leave."

Arminas
Wednesday January 17th, 2007 4:23:00 PM

Sitting upon his perch in the tree, Arminas lets out an audible gulp when word of Parnoth's interest is expressed. The scars upon his back seem to ache in remembrance of his encounter with the dragon spawn creatures. Bralin is correct, an encounter with Parnoth would be deadly. He reaches out to Ewan strokes her feathers. This simple act helps him relax and focus.

"Any I think has it correct, if Parnoth is interested, perhaps there is really something that may do him harm."

Davros
Wednesday January 17th, 2007 10:54:39 PM

"Parnoth....this is bad news. We have done this town a disservice by allowing word of this find to spread too far too fast."

Davros then heads for the room and, if allowed by the elven delegation, begins reading and studying anything that is sturdy enough to be handled. He spends every waking moment and many sleepless hours as well at this task.

DM Kathy
Thursday January 18th, 2007 1:18:36 AM

Remo looks concerned. "I cannot say with any degree of certainty what Parnoth intends with regard to the discovery," he says thoughtfully. "Dragons are very hard to read. And yet...and yet I got the sense that it was not so much the contents of the find that interested him so much as the...the fact of the find. The fact that it was here, that is. Does that make any sense?"

He lisens intently to the description of the find, then asks politely if he may see it for himself. "I do not intend on keeping any information from Parnoth," he explains to Harvest. "As you have gathered, it would be worse than useless to try. My best chance is in persuading him to show prudence, and caution. And mercy. Though that last is, I admit, more difficult."

Firon, Tahlela, and Sivaine are inclined to let Remo see the site, but the scholarly delegation demurs. "We do not think it wise that this...this collaborator be given access to these treasures of the past," Zalil says.

"It is certainly something to consider," Firon replies politely. "Yet it is our decision to make."

Lorth
Thursday January 18th, 2007 7:44:42 AM

Lorth has nothing to add to the conversation as these decisions are up to the elves that will live in the area. He will assist Remo if he needs anything, but resumes his patrol whenever possible.

Any
Thursday January 18th, 2007 8:38:33 AM

Any cannot see how anything can be done about the situation as it currently exists.

"Parnoth evidently already knows the room exists, and possibly even knows more about this room and who its owner may have been than any of those here in the village, including the scholarly delegation. Having Remo see the room will not change that, and his sharp eyes may notice things that even elves have missed. A new perspective is alwasy welcome.

For now we can only continue as we have, and hope that either we can discover what about this room interests Parnoth, or do as Harvest suggests, and remove the point of interest from the village, by moving the room and its contents away from here."

This said, Any waits to hear what the others think.

Harvest
Thursday January 18th, 2007 10:31:41 AM

"If Parnoth's interests lie in the fact of the room, then we must discover first the lore behind the room ourselves before we will know whether or not the town will be in jeopardy," Harvest concludes. "If there is something of this place that would draw Parnoth's interest, then the entire valley and the Culverwood as well will be under threat of Parnoth's invasion."

"Only with such knowledge can we know whether we should stand and fight, move the town, move the room ... or attempt to destroy the room."

"How, Remo Threadlefoot, did you convince Parnoth to send you to discover the nature of this site? You rather than one of his bound agents? This may give us an idea of the time we have left before Parnoth takes more direct and forceful measures."

Arminas remains sitting in the tree, hopefully he is letting cooler heads make decisions on the room.

He scans the area, at least he can continue to keep watch as the discussions take place below.

Spot 29

Bralin
Thursday January 18th, 2007 5:36:22 PM

Bralin ponders Remo's answer.

"Mayhap we misunderstand the purpose of this site," he comments. "Surely a study would not attract this much interest."

He looks at Zalil thoughfully - which is to say, the dwarf is staring into the elf's eyes, totally expressionless.

After several moments of this, he speaks again.

"Mayhap this is a cache? Prepositioned against some future action against the Wyrm?"

Florin Jadenth
Thursday January 18th, 2007 6:14:36 PM

Florin listens to what is being said but stays silent in his thoughts since most of his revolve on the same line as everyone elses is.

Florin keeps a eye out also one those around him since the other elves don't seem to be overly thrilled at letting Remo look over the find.

Davros
Thursday January 18th, 2007 9:48:26 PM

Davros spends more and more time in the room, trying to learn its' secrets. It seems he eats and sleeps very little these days, especially since learning of the dragon's interest in the area.

"If he is concerned more with the existence of the find than what it contains, what does that mean? We should start looking for more hidden rooms, I think."

DM Kathy
Friday January 19th, 2007 1:22:10 AM

Remo listens attentively to all the comments. "Well," he says at last. "Let's have a look at it anyway. If I may," he adds with a bow to Firon.

"I think it would be best," Firon replies, and, over Zalil's protests, the three refugee elders escort the dapper halfling to the site.

"It was Parnoth's own idea to send me," he explains to Harvest on the way. "I believe he feels that the find will somehow affect our present negotiations, and wanted me to see it for myself. Though I admit I can't begin to guess what his plans are."

Once at the site, Remo pokes dutifully about, although it soon becomes clear that he is no scholar, and has only a mild curiosity about the contents of the underground chamber. "I'm sure it's in good hands," he says heartily, with smiles for all the scholars.

Back at the cookfire, he explains, "This is a short visit, I'm afraid. I'll stay the night here, if I may, and return to Parnoth's kingdom tomorrow. I believe..." he hesitates, then continues. "I believe he intends to use this chamber as proof that the Culverwood once extended farther into Cinnamon Valley than it does now. Ruasel was, after all, an elf mage of the Culverwood. It would stand to reason that his sanctuary would be within its borders--or possibly just outside. It's possible that Parnoth intends to use this as an excuse to make more demands of the folk of the Valley."

"What rubbish!" Zalil scoffs. "The Tyrant takes what he will, and needs no excuses to make it pretty. His purpose is darker still, of that you can be sure."

Remo shakes his head. "You may be right, but I can't think what," he replies calmly. "Certainly pushing claim of ownership into Cinnamon Valley itself is bad enough."

All in all, it is a sober evening meal, despite the presence of the group from Jarlwolf.

Lorth
Friday January 19th, 2007 7:44:01 AM

Lorth eats his evening meal in silence. He has no wish to engage Parnoth's forces again, although he certainly will if need be. He tries not to think about the time they where taken captive and had to run for their lives, tis a shameful time for him.

Any
Friday January 19th, 2007 8:44:49 AM

Any contemplates the message relayed by Remo,

"I got the sense that it was not so much the contents of the find that interested him so much as the...the fact of the find."

Why does the finding of this room interest the dragon so much?

Any makes a round of the camp, and then settles himself by the fire to think. He brings his lute around to the front, but any watching can tell he is not really focusing on what he is playing. He seems to be simply strumming random chords while he thinks.

Harvest  d20+6=16
Friday January 19th, 2007 9:32:02 AM

"If I might ask, Remo Threadlefoot, what is the substance of your negotiations with Parnoth? Unless you possess the lore necessary to confirm Parnoth's claim, I do not understand why it is that he would send you. Perhaps it is a ruse within the context of your negotiations."

Harvest shakes her head.

"In the Contested Kingdoms, it was common for one Baron or another to claim the territory of another based upon history long past. And yet, without the means of enforcement, it was well understood within the camps that such claims were all for naught."

"Parnoth seems even now unable to claim the Culverwood as his own." She shakes her head, and the crest of hair that dangles over her forehead wags gently to and fro.

"Perhaps the key lies within this elfish mage Ruasel." (Knowledge Geography [for people] 16) "I have no more than heard the name."

"Do you know of him, Anthos?" she asks. "Davros Sapphiredge, is his lore taught in wizardly schools?" She puts the questions to the elfish scholars as well.

=== OOC ===

I'm a bit confused. I'm getting mired in elfish names. When did we determine that this room had once belonged to a mage named Ruasel? I've found a reference on Friday January 12th, 2007 12:29:11 AM to him.

On'Azadre is a scholar-mage who seems to have a great deal of knowledge about magical theory. He is keen to get a look at what spells Ruasel may have been researching in this secluded chamber. He is nearly as arrogant as Zalil.

Did I miss something before this?

Bralin
Friday January 19th, 2007 1:51:11 PM

The dwarf cannot fathom the mind of dragon or diplomat. Bralin listens, and files away what he hears.

Mayhap these words have future import. For now, he must wait.

Sitting in the tree brings a sense of comfort to Arminas, even as word of Parnoth's desire to extend his claim is spoken by Remo.

"Parnoth will never be able to control the Culverwood. The Forest rejects him, the Fae King has returned strength to the Forest. Yet he seems to easily be able to cause harm to the people of the Forest. He loses the war while he wins the battles. We cannot sit here and let him inflict more harm on these elves. Perhaps I should scout a hidden valley to escape to if Parnoth comes."

As he sits, he grooms Ewan.

[OOC: From the January 7th DM post:

Harvest casts her spell and is able to decipher some of the writing, although it is rough going even with magical help. The papers seem to belong to a mage named Ruasel, and contain notes on his magical research and a personal journal of sorts. The magical noes are particularly difficult to understand.

"Noes" should be "notes." :) ]

You all put your minds to it, but don't recall having heard the name "Ruasel" in any other context. Both Davros and Harvest do realize, though, that there are no written records of the Culverwood ever having extended this far north.

"You make a good point," Remo replies to Harvest. "It could be that Parnoth's reach exceeds his grasp. I hope it is no more than that." He shrugs. "But, his lifetime will vastly exceed ours. Perhaps this is a long-term plan whose end we will never see."

He goes on to explain the nature of his negotiations with Parnoth. At the behest of the council, Remo is attempting to work out a mutual non-agression pact between Parnoth and the communities of Cinnamon Valley. It is, Remo admits, a difficult negotiation, as Parnoth does not really fear aggression from the Valley. "It is more a matter of wanting to focus his forces on more troublesome spots," Remo says. "It is scant leverage, but I make of it what I can." He sighs. "And, with this find, he appears to be poised to press for more concessions. I foresee a difficult few weeks for me."

Ewan expresses her readiness to Arminas to find whatever he may need.

Florin spends a very pleasant evening eating supper with Ivy, as her father watches, smiling, from a discreet distance.

The night passes uneventfully, and the next morning the Jarlwolf contingent depart for home, and Remo and his escort ride back toward the Culverwood. The scholars are still with you, and continue with their work. The refugees go back to their routine of building, planting, and watching, but they are clearly uneasy.

Each day he takes time to ride a different route around the infant village, learning the countryside better, the approaches to the village, and the resources available to the people here.

Around the fire, he continues work on his carving, and seems to be composing again with the aid of his new Lute.

Another day passes for Harvest Moon. As the presence of the room has taken on an import of a more political nature, she approaches the Elves of the Culverwood once more. Despite their aloofness, she presses her questions. It is always of interest to hear about the methods by which scholars paint a living picture from the bits and bats that live beyond the moment of events and into the future. But the Emerald Dragon's involvement brings an urgency to the matter, and Harvest repeatedly and most pointedly brings the discussion back to the authenticity of the site.

DM Kathy
Tuesday January 23rd, 2007 12:57:26 AM

The departure of your visitors should herald a return to normal routine, but it does not. For one thing, the scholars are still there. For another, the refugees have seen and heard to much over the past few days. They are clearly uneasy, and go about their tasks in larger groups, as if seeking safety.

Harvest and Davros spend some time with the scholars. Most are difficult to get along with, but you are able to glean some information. As nearly as anyone can tell, the site is authentic. Ruasel, a wizard of some fame during his time, used the place as a refuge to escape those who (according to his writings) were contantly seeking his counsel. Ruasel would teleport himself to and from the chamber, and, based on his writings, nobody knew where he would disappear to. Much of the surviving writing proves to be Ruasel's personal journals, which contain little of magical theory. They are of more interest to historians. Davros is able to spend a few moments with some of the magical research notes, but the scholars guard these pretty closely, and they are difficult to decipher.

Arminas and Ewan work on scouting for a sanctuary. You don't find much amid the rolling hills and light forest. You do note a steep riverbank of loose rock and scree, which could foil pursuit for a time. You find several small bolt-holes, which could be used by a handful of people, but nothing large enough to shelter everyone. Farther afield, of course, there is Magpie Lake, and the towns of Magpie Crossing and Merrydale.

Florin bids farewell to Ivy, then spends the day with his friends. Any continues to work on his carving and play his lute, while Lorth takes the opportunity to practice and keep his equipment in shape.

You all believe you are done with visitors for the time being, which is why it is so strange to see the lone figure approaching camp, from the direction of Jarlwolf.

The lone figure actually seems to get smaller as she walks nearer. Soon enough you realise she is a Halfling, though perhaps you assumed someone taller.

She walks towards the newly discovered room, and when challenged, replies in a pleasant and friendly manner.
Diplomacy 16

"I'm just here to have a look. We've heard about this find in the Crescent Valley, and I'm sure my younger brother Julian would've come but I've not seen him since he came back from Plateau City. Actually, I've not seen him since Grigory, Till and Ponto gave him what for and left him in the Culverwood. Our brothers were... upset, that he'd lied to us about training in Plateau City. Still, as Papa said, 'At least he's not a rogue.' Ha!"

The little halfling seems not much more than a girl. She has a beautiful face, and it is hard to not believe her when she smiles with her clear green eyes and red lips. Lily's brown hair is long and curly, almost ringlets, under a quiky light-brown full-brimmed hat.

"Anyway, I thought there might be some opportunities here to earn an honest living. The poor elves being uprooted, then stumbling across a... a room, is it true? They found a room? Anyways, I thought I could help. I know I don't look all that useful at the moment, but I know a thing or two, about this and that."

Lily wears a long white tunic dress with a strong blue apron over. She sports a surprisingly heavy belt, and her pale green cloak does not hide her two swords, though the four daggers are not so apparent at first. A very fine quiver hangs from her belt, though she carries no bow. Over her cloak Lily wears her pack, and rolled and tied to this is leather armour made of small pieces of leather coloured like the autumnal forest. A well crafted, gilt even, buckler also hangs from the pack.

"There's another nasty rumour that the dr... that Parnoth is interested in the room. That doesn't bode well for the elves. I'd like to be able to lend a hand, perhaps keeping an eye out for trouble, on their behalf."

"I'm good at striking deals with people, or I can disappear into a crowd or a heath. And I enjoy a fight nearly as much as my brother Julian the Badger."

"Greetings Miss Lily. My name is Anthos Westar, but most call me Any. Well met indeed. It seems that the tale of what we have found here has not been kept as secret as we thought, for not only has the tyrant Parnoth heard of it, but the message has reached the Crescent Valley.

Since you told about yourself, I suppoase we should do so in return. I am an entertainer of sorts, with songs and tales to enthrall old and young alike. We as a group have come to help keep this new village safe untill it is completed. So far that has not been a difficult task, but if the stories surrounding what has been found here continue to spread, that may change.

As far as your staying here to help, that is as much a decision of the village as it is for us. For my part, I would welcome any help we can receive."

Having said this, Any stands by listening, trying to get a handle on this new little lady.

Sense Motive 21

Harvest
Tuesday January 23rd, 2007 10:36:08 AM

"I am Harvest Moon, Lily." The small human girl, possibly eighteen years of age from the look of her, gives greeting to the halfling from Crescent Valley. A brown crescent of hair arches over her forehead and down over one eye from the otherwise close cropped hair upon her head. Her hands are hidden within the bulky sleeves of the large oil-sealed, hooded coat making her appear even smaller than she is.

"Are you Lily the Badger as well?" Harvest asks from her place next to Anthos. "As is your brother Julian?"

Later, sitting for a quiet lunch with Anthos, Harvest Moon confides her thoughts upon the dilemma presented by the room.

"It has struck me, Anthos, that within the possible dangers and complications presented by the discovery of this room, that any acts that we may take toward resolve must come from out of the nature of our original charge." Harvest raises the brown bread in both hands and tears from the chewy crust of it. "That is to say, from the will of the elves. Should the elves think that it is best to leave, then they should do so soon as it will take time to find a locale for another town. And should their will be to remain, then we must think of ways in which to guard them from attacks both physical and political."

"But until we know which they choose, we cannot know how to proceed. I think we should ask them."

Bralin
Tuesday January 23rd, 2007 4:20:58 PM

As is his custom, the dwarf clangs out to meet this newcomer. Bralin is encased in dull black plate, and carries a dull black shield. Both are unadorned. His bulbous nose and black, forked beard escape from his helm. A dwarven waraxe pokes up from his back, a warhammer hangs from his left side, a crossbow from his right, and a dagger is strapped to his chest.

He ain't no wizard.

Taking his cue from Any and Harvest, he raises a dirty hand.
"Well met. I am Bralin Stoneminder."

He doesn't say another word, but remains in the area, waiting patiently for a sign that this halfling be accepted into the company or not.

Arminas
Tuesday January 23rd, 2007 4:38:29 PM

Arminas wanders back toward the group, the goldens eagle soaring above.

"There is little hope of sheltering and hiding these elves unless we were to escape to Magpie Crossing or another town. While small groups could be hidden, I am afraid there is no place to hide so many."

Arminas then spots the small halfling woman.

"Well now, another visitor is it? I am Arminas Calaelen, scout and ranger. Do not worry about my friend up there, she prefers rabbits and things that don't seem quite so dangerous." glancing at the swords and daggers the halfling wears.

"Perhaps I missed something, do you travel alone through this land? There are many dangers about, so you may wish to find someone you trust to watch while you sleep."

Lily (2nd post, response)
Tuesday January 23rd, 2007 6:10:43 PM

"Hello, Lorth Jeresota. I am Lily Bolger Newbury Pipewood Trufflefinder. Our family traditionaly finds truffles, and sells them. However, between the 12 of us kids, there's more workers than work to be done. I seek something, well, more fun."

"Any Westar, well met. I too love to sing, and to perform a sort of acrobatics routine that many enjoy, though usually no more than thrice. Will you teach me some songs?"

"Harvest Moon, lovely name, I really like it. Lily the Badger, no. That is Julian's own quirk. He once beat up dire badger bare handed, or so he says. I've been called Lily the Harlequin as I perform, and that's not so bad a name to have. I often wander about in disguise, so I have taken many names in my time."

"Bralin Stoneminder, hello. Could we add a little colour here? Please, I'm sorry for I jest. Perhaps, rather, we could share some ales some time soon?"

"Arminas Calaelan, greetings. I thank you for your concern. I generally travel alone, yes. I usually manage to avoid detection by most creatures, and can hide most anywhere. Is it unsafe here, in this fledgling village, that I need someone to watch over me?"

"Is there any chance I can peer into this room? Perhaps tomorrow... Shall I set up my tent, oh, I don't know, over here? Or more over there? Who should I talk to, amoungst the elves?"

Florin Jadenth
Tuesday January 23rd, 2007 10:41:57 PM

Florin after his watch and everything moves to meet Lily also, "Hello there miss, my name is Florin Jadenth, a protector and servant of Domi and undeadhunter." Florin holds out his hand to Lily and smiles now being polite and well spoken.

Florin wears blueish tinted half-plate and has a mithril longsword at his left hip, the handle of which is silver and shaped like a dragon with it's wings as the guard and ruby chips for eyes. He carries the rest of his gear with him also which consists of his backpack, greatsword which hangs on his back and a bow with a pair of quivers attached to his backpack. Held under his arm that he doesn't have held out is a visor helmet of the same blueish tint. His eyes are ice blue in color and his hair is black and pulled back in a pony tail, showing his pointed ears. For a elf though Florin is heavily muscled, alittle to much so for most elves.

Davros
Wednesday January 24th, 2007 12:05:39 AM

Upon hearing that there is yet another visitor to the elven town, Davros makes his way to meet the newcomer. He does not rush as his companions likely have already assessed any possible threat. On the way, he makes a mental note to tell the others that we should come up with some sort of checkpoint to gauge people before they stroll into the center of town.

As he approaches, Lily sees a young man, with a few years to go before approaching middle age. He is dressed well, favoring dark blue hues in his clothing, and carries himself as someone who has seen hard work, travel, and a bit of schooling in his time.

"Greetings to you. I am Davros Sapphiredge. As I listen to my companions, it seems that you, like others are interested in the find. I can probably help with what you need, but I only have limited access myself."

As he speaks, a well groomed rat sits on his shoulder, mimicing his every movement. For awhile you are not quite sure if the rat is controlling his actions, but then you see him scurry into the hood of his cloak for his midmorning nap.

Wednesday January 24th, 2007 12:34:17 AM

The strange little halfling called Lily meets a group of adventurers, who just may be as strange as she is.

A bewildered Tahlela surely thinks so, as she looks back and forth between Lily and the adventurers she knows, as if trying to work out whether this halfling is a security risk. Finally, she holds out a hand in greeting. "Welcome to Nuaithar-Windtree," she says. "I am Tahlela, one of the elders here." Lily sees a middle-aged elf woman in leather armor, a bow slung at her back.

"If I may ask," she continues, "what is your interest in our discovery?"

As she listens to the reply, Tahlela leads you all back toward the fire, where the evening meal is cooking. "You must at least join us for a meal," she says. Her mouth twists a little. "All those months in the refugee camp," she says to nobody in particular. "Nobody wanted to know us, or think about us. Now we have more visitors than we know what to do with." She sighs. "Because of a pile of gold and some musty papers."

Lorth
Wednesday January 24th, 2007 7:38:20 AM

Lorth is fine with the newcomer prefering to give everyone a chance before judging them. He makes his way to the evening meal and has a good dinner.

Any
Wednesday January 24th, 2007 8:34:31 AM

As Any and Harvest eat together, she suggests that there needs to be a clarification of the role the adventurer's are to play in this area. Will the elves remain, run, or what? Do we fortify, or prepare to leave.? It is a question that does need to be answered before things can continue. If Parnoth wants this land, the elves must decide if they will defend it, or leave it, else why continue this work?

Any lays the question out before the village elders, telling them to consider what they will do.

As for the newcomer, she seems pleasant, and sincere enough in her intentions, and an extra pair of eyes to watch, hands to work, and sword to guard would be welcome.

Harvest
Wednesday January 24th, 2007 10:26:32 AM

The evening meal this night is a congregation. By Anthos' side is where Harvest Moon sits as he sounds out the wishes of the elves for their future.

Bralin
Wednesday January 24th, 2007 5:17:37 PM

"My color suits me," Bralin replies innocently before Lily can share he was only jesting.

He nods in acceptance of this, moving his mental evaluation of the girl's personality closer to the 'Arminas' side of the scale.

The prospect of an ale or two elicits a more appreciative nod.
"Aye," he answers.

The evening meal is ready, and Bralin has never been late to one yet. He moves into line.

Arminas
Wednesday January 24th, 2007 10:00:32 PM

"Well Lily, a while back two dire bears attacked the elves, killing one and seriously wounding another. They would be difficult for one person alone to deal with. Perhaps though there is more of you than I imagined."

Arminas hears the call to dinner, and steps aside as Bralin moves into line.

Looking back at Lily, he adds:

"Never get between a dwarf and his dinner. There now, you are safer already." A grin spreads over Arminas' face.

Florin Jadenth
Wednesday January 24th, 2007 11:38:45 PM

Florin chuckles some at his friend Bralin and moves to join him also as he looks to the others. He watches to see if anything new comes up during the meal but otherwise enjoys his meal and the relaxation time.

Davros
Wednesday January 24th, 2007 11:49:15 PM

Davros joins the evening meal and thanks the elves as always for their hospitality. He grabs a few extra pieces of cheese for Whiskers and then sits near the others so that he can hear Lily's stories.

"As for the town's safety, I think we should consult with the elders soon. We have many ideas to give them, but the decisions are ultimately theirs."

After the meal, Davros retires early to the comfort of research and learning at Ruasel's room. Currently, he occupies himself with making an inventory of all the lesser alchemical and lab supplies present.

DM Kathy
Thursday January 25th, 2007 12:36:29 AM

The elves gather for the evening meal. The elders are sober as they ponder Any's question.

"We have put so much work into this site," Sivaine says with a sigh. "To leave it...so soon after having left our homes in the Culverwood..."

"Better now than ten years from now," Tahlela replies briskly. "When we've formed attachments and put down roots." Her mouth twists. "Perhaps we should become nomads."

Firon shakes his head. "I do not think we should so lightly abandon all that we've built."

"If it comes to a fight," Tahlela counters, "we will lose. We cannot stand against the Tyrant, even at this distance."

"But we don't know for sure that he plans to take the place by force," Sivaine replies in a worried voice. She is twisting her hands restlessly.

"You should not abandon this place," Zalil puts in. "As I understand it, the humans hold sway here, and they gave you this land for a settlement. You should not give it up to the Tyrant."

"Surely that is our decision," Tahelea says curtly.

Zalil looks as if he is deciding whether to take offense, when Firon hastily puts in, "We should concentrate on building defenses." He looks at the other two elders, seeking their agreement. "We will not leave--at least, not yet--but will turn our attention to defensive structures. That way, perhaps, we will be able to hold what we have built."

"I agree," Tahlela says.

"Anyway," Sivaine adds. "Zalil has a point. The humans do control the valley, and we have their permission to build here. Not anywhere else, here. Relocating could cause problems with our neighbors."

Zalil snorts. "That was not my point."

"It is something to consider, though," Firon says. "Very well. We remain, for now, and concentrate on building defenses."

He turns to your group. "If you have any further thoughts on how we might best defend ourselves, please, do not keep them to yourselves. A time may come when we need every advantage."

Lily
Thursday January 25th, 2007 3:20:54 AM

In response to Tahlela, Lily speaks with great respect,
"I am, I guess, opportunistic. I can get into places, spots, and things where others cannot, where others dare not, and even where othere shouldn't. With such an unusual find I though my skills might be useful.

"At the very least, I thought there might be prospect of work. My 11 siblings cannot find enough truffles as it is, even with some of them adventuring for a living."

Lily accepts a small helping of dinner, "Nay, even this is a lot for me, for there isn't a lot of me. This might tide me over till tomorrow's dinner, and hopefuly by then I will have started to earn it. I thank you for this heartily." She smiles sincerely, and begins to blush with gratitude for what these elves can spare.

The idea of fortifying against a dragon leaves Lily quiet in contemplation for a while.
"I think I know how my people, and perhaps Bralin's, would prepare for they are similar. But that is not the way of the elves. Perhaps a deal can struck. A one-off bargain rather than a continuing tribute. Tis but a thought for the moment."

Lorth
Thursday January 25th, 2007 7:39:20 AM

Lorth is certainly not familiar with building defensive structures as he has never fought in a siege, so he keeps quiet. Perhaps Bralin will know something.

Any
Thursday January 25th, 2007 8:50:01 AM

"The way elves would build and live with nature, and the way humans build to control nature, are two different attitudes towards how the defenses would be built. Humans would build a keep, or palisade, or some other type of fortification. I am not sure if any of those would suffice to stop Parnoth if he decided to come against you. I do not know how elves would fortify. My experience is that they do so by making their homes blend with their surroundings, but in this case, Parnoth already knows where you are. Perhaps your best hope would be to become less "interesting" to him.

I fear I am of no help to you in this instance. Perhaps the others will be more so."

He sits by Harvests side. Idly his hand reaches out and rests upon her shoulder as he listens to suggestions from the others.

Harvest  d20+5=23
Thursday January 25th, 2007 10:25:24 AM

"A tree survives the storm because it knows when to stand and when to bend," Harvest Moon hears the voice of Pasix Mixmindor within her head even as she herself speaks them herself. "Perhaps we cannot stand against Parnoth, but defenses against lesser dangers are still worthy goals. Preparations that may have deterred the bears for instance, or alerted us to their approach sooner."

"I have been taught that one of the greatest defenses that one can have is awareness. With foreknowledge of a foe, one may gird a more proper defense. With such foreknowledge, one might even choose flight while it is still possible. A network of long distance communication would also grant much further vision of approaching dangers were we to set up watch post a distance from the town."

"I will attempt to draw a map of this area so that we may more readily envision where defenses, both physical obstructions and points of lookout, should best be placed." (Profession: Cartographer 23 /Untrained)

A comforting hand falls upon her shoulder, and her body, drawn to Anthos, leans to him of its own volition. "Will you walk with me?" she asks, looking up into his face.

Bralin
Thursday January 25th, 2007 10:50:59 AM

Bralin perks right up at the question of defenses.

"Harvest is correct, knowledge of your attackers have much import."

He looks thoughtfully at the trees and Arminas.

"Platforms high in yon trees provide excellent line of sight from which to fire a bow or cast a spell. Build platforms that cover each other and provide cross cover of ground. Build walls...mayhap hedges?...to funnel attackers into those areas accessible by the greatest number of weapons - a killing field. If such can be done cleverly, so the attackers remain unaware that they are being funnelled, so much the better.

Also, ye need some method of escaping a tree, be it walkway or spell. Enemies will attempt to burn them or chop them down.

Finally, ye must know the number of your attackers. No village can withstand a dragon or an army. Ye should prepare defenses to repel the raids of several score enemy. Should their numbers be half again as many as your fighting force, ye will likely lose. Be prepared to flee in such a case.

Forward observation posts and warning systems will help keep ye aware of yon neighbors."

Arminas
Thursday January 25th, 2007 6:01:26 PM

Arminas listens intently as Bralin talk of defenses. The dwarf may be stubborn and humorless, but he knows battle.

"Yes, I could help pick trees that are sturdy and tall. Platforms could be built so that they are not easily seen, and sentries could stay hidden. Perhaps I could speak with some of the small birds in the area. I think if we provide food at the platform, they will stay close by. In return, I think they may fly back to a designated spot in town with a warning message tied to a leg. It will take some training, but I think it can be done.

Escape could simply be tying a rope to an adjoining tree and swinging down. We could make the landing spot protected by pits on the side away from town. If someone were to chase the sentry, it would give a better chance of escape.

There are plants with mighty thorns. If we were to plant them in the right area, it would naturally move people into the direction we choose.

I think your plan has merit. If the elders agree, we should start right away."

Florin Jadenth
Thursday January 25th, 2007 7:48:08 PM

Florin listens to what is said and then to the others listening to what is said before closing his eyes and speaking also, "The ideas of ground defenses and such along with walls is a good idea but you also must consider that is this dragon takes on the city itself then you will need something that can pierce it's hide which means something like a ballista or such. I'm sure if you seek out someone some engineers could help in that." Florin looks to the elders and smiles gently, "I'm trained for battle and protecting those who need it. If you like I will aid with this along with Bralin, between us I think we could see to your city being protected with some ideas. A detailed and planned defense will help, knowing where to have a couple entangle spells cast to keep a greater area held and such, archers in that area to pelt the enemy that are moving foreward and being held. In a ground battle your best bet is to hold the enemy, slow and weaken as much as you can before a direct fight, your looking to save lives in a battle and that is the best way. Keep face to face enounters as low as possible."

Florin looks to Lorth and the others before speaking again, "Also you should be making sure you have a decent enough people ready for actions, those who can be spared should train off and on, I believe there are those among us that can help train if needed in bow or in hand to hand, weapon to weapon and so on. It needs to be routine, automatic, when the bells ring people move to be ready."

Florin goes silent now, adding in his two cents. Yes he was once a leader, tactics and combat was and is his thing and he will give help as much as he can to see these people are ready to survive, to fight, to keep their land and their lives.

Davros
Thursday January 25th, 2007 9:12:37 PM

"First, I recommend more scouts. We are doing an adequate job, but additional scouts ranging further out would help."

"I like the ideas for the town's immediate defense, but my thinking is about farther away. We should seek out allies. There are many creatures of the forest which have been traditionally strong allies to elves, and help with mutual defense. Beyond this, alliances could be formed with Jarlwolf and every other town and community in the area. The dragon may have no problem attacking lone towns, but a number of peoples allied together may give him pause. Even the most powerful dragon will not seek to overextend himself. And he would risk himself also. If all of these towns were allied in defense against him, they would probably have access to contact adventurers who would be willing and able to fight Parnoth directly. After all, was not the entire Cinnamon Valley freed from the rule of a powerful giant by a group of adventurers?"

"Last, and most importantly we need information. What is the dragon doing? Does he really care about this town or was that just a whim he spoke out loud? There apparently are negotiations going on with him. Are any other towns involved? We should send out riders to other towns and gather information."

A long winded speech as usual from Davros. But when his learning is called upon, he is happy to share it. Hopefully Whiskers is the only one he put to sleep with the speech.

DM Kathy
Friday January 26th, 2007 12:56:40 AM

The elves listen to your suggestions, nodding.

"Walls are not really our style," Firon replies to Bralin. "And hedges will have to wait until after summer's heat has past, else they will wither and die. But we can build platforms."

"My scouts could use a bit of extra training," says Tahlela with a grin for Florin. "If some of you could undertake to give it to them. A ballista, now...that would be quite an undertaking." She glances around. "Does anyone know how to build one?"

"Does anyone know how to hide one?" asks Firon wryly.

"Tahlela's hunters can help with scouting and watching," says Sivaine, with a nod at Harvest. "The fields are far enough along that I can send some of my people off to fish and gather food. The hunters can stick closer to camp and keep an eye on things."

Firon is intrigued by Arminas's suggestions of escape routes. "Let us put our heads together and see what we can come up with," he says.

"We like to think that the folk of Jarlwolf are our allies, of a sort," Sivaine says to Davros. "But you make a good point. We should try to solidify our ties with the human settlements in the region. Perhaps a diplomatic mission...we must put some though into whom to send."

Over the next day or two, they begin putting their plans into action. More scout platforms are built, many with cunning escape routes. Hedges and other obstacles are planned, to subtly control the approaches to the village. And Tahlela's scouts report for extra training.

You help as you can, scouting, advising, training, helping to build. Harvest takes a walk around the area and is able to draw a fairly detailed map (especially if she thinks to consult with Arminas/Ewan for an aerial perspective).

Lorth
Friday January 26th, 2007 8:07:04 AM

Lorth volunteers to help with the training of the elves. He does his best to instuct them in longsword technique, concentrating mostly on defensive moves with some quick easy offensive strikes.
Lorth continues to teach as long as there are students who would like to learn, when not teaching he does his normal scouting.

Any
Friday January 26th, 2007 8:45:50 AM

Any nods in approval as each suggestion for defense is made. When the morning comes, he accompanies Harvest as she goes out to map the surrounding area. He has riiden far afield in his scouting, and is able to offer many incites regarding places of concealment on the ground, and routes of escape for any caught out this far, which circuitously bring that person back to the village.

He works with the others, once returned, to help in training the scouts in combat.

Later, sitting by the fire, he addresses Harvest,

"Your suggestion to remove the room and its contents from the village area has merit. If this is truly Parnoth's point of interest in this area, we should think about removing it. If it is just a ploy to extend his reach, I fear nothing we can do will deter him. In that case, the only hope I see for this village is to prepare as they have begun, and hope for the best."

Harvest
Friday January 26th, 2007 9:57:20 AM

Harvest Moon places the bit of bread and cheese into the hammock of her lap and she reaches out with to take Any's hand.

"That is all that we can do at any time in life, My Love," she replies.

Her thoughts return to the day's ride. The asking of Arminas Calaelen and his Ewan to aide them in the mapping had gone better than expected. The eagle had been able to understand the idea that marks upon paper could represent objects upon the ground. Or, perhaps, it had been the great understanding that the ranger had of his friend that was the crux of the thing.

"The bridge over the Merrydale road where it crosses the Windtree might be an area to consider defending. If the town must flee from a threat that comes either from or through the Culverwood, I think that it would be most reasonable to withdraw up the road in the direction of Magpie Crossing and Stormwind Castle beyond."

"The map that I have drawn shows the ways of great approach. Large creatures or large movements of people might use these ways. One mile or three down each of these, we may wish to post hidden lookouts with relays along the way to provide early warning."

"Still yet, is to map the smaller ways closer to the camp. These would be the ways of use to smaller scouting groups or skirmish parties, dangerous animals as well. Mapping these ways will require more time. And I will need the aide of one versed in woodcraft. Arminas Calaelen, if you would lend your help again. Or, perhaps, one of the hunters."

Map of Greater Cinnamon Valley

Bralin
Friday January 26th, 2007 10:08:33 AM

The dwarf nods with Davros' suggestion about gathering allies, but disagrees with the ballista idea.

"Parnoth will not rouse himself to attack one village. Has the dragon ever left the safety of his halls? We have not resources to train and build for such a defense, nor for attack by an army. First, devise the means to repel several score. Add on as time permits."

Arminas
Friday January 26th, 2007 5:37:32 PM

Arminas spends his time traveling about with Ewan and Harvest, getting an even more detailed lay of the land. While his study of landmarks and topography has committed the land to his memory, he realizes that without the mapping skills of Harvest that few others will gain such knowledge.

While they map the land, he looks for the hidden lookouts Harvest mentions, both in trees and ridges.

He gives suggestions to the elves, teaching them ways to conceal pits and snares.

"Make sure that the sentry is able to make safe landing just on this side of the traps. This way, if he is seen it will actually be to our benefit, as the attackers are likely to become victims of the traps. Be careful though, and teach those of the village where the danger is hidden."

When he comes across an animal that may help them keep watch, he uses the spells 'Speak with Animals' and 'Charm Animal'. He asks for help in watching for danger.

"Harvest, is there more you require of me? I do not think we will ever finish this work, yet in starting we are upon the path."

Lily  d20+20=22
Friday January 26th, 2007 5:43:32 PM

Seeing all the new action as it is going on Lily tries to find a useful place for herself. She joins Lorth in the training grounds.

"Perhaps the elves would find the longspear useful, too. A line of spear backed up by archers is formidable. And shields or some cover, such as hedges to protect the spearmen is better still. I will offer to teach that."

Lily turns to the elves and speaks to them in their own tongue, with a near perfect accent, "For those who aren't training with Lorth here, I can help to train you with these longspears," as she draws one from her quiver, "for they are easy to make and help to keep the enemy from you. To some of you I could teach how to tumble away from the enemy so that they do not hurt you, or even past them without fear. But that is harder to master. Let's begin with the longspear."
Diguise (accent) 22

Davros
Friday January 26th, 2007 7:29:44 PM

"We have to be careful not to pull the elves away from their strengths. Archery, and hit and run tactics are more their style than standing behind a wall and trading sword blows. A few minor magic deceptions may prove useful as well. With the elders permission I will take on a few apprentices and teach some defensive magics. If none are interested, maybe Zaryla would like to learn a few new spells from me to help protect the town."

Florin Jadenth
Friday January 26th, 2007 9:58:14 PM

Florin takes time to help with the defenses and also to help train some of the else, he too can use a longsword well and his archery skills are not half bad now as a elf.

Seeing Lily teaching about the longspear he moves over and smiles to her, "I use to use a glaive, if I may suggest something Lily that might aid them also. When fighting mounted units it is a good idea to plant a polearm type weapon for the charge, tips just so." He smiles to her, "You being a user of the longspear should teach them but a suggestion is all."

Florin continues this, his training to become a paladin of Domi was hrs on hrs of swordsmanship and such so he is relentless in his training, offering words of encouragement when he sees progress and slightly strict when he thinks a elf or two can do better if they put their all in to it.
