Conner
Saturday January 20th, 2007 7:36:07 PM

The tattooed fighter listens to Kay's stories about the Ginny and an uneasy feeling comes over the man. Raised on a farm, Conner retains some of the superstitions common amongst rural folk. "I think we'd better have a word with some of the children." he advises Mira and the others.

"May be the children can provide some information. But it doesn't sound like this Frist Ginny, if real, would take supplies from the children. Something else must be going on." Kadaz starts out early to the kitchen. It's going to take him a while to get his shoes on.

Arm
Monday January 22nd, 2007 5:49:50 AM

Sympathizing with Kay's obvious "condition", Arm offers to help her in the kitchen before he leaves with the others. While they are in the kitchen, he says quietly to her, "So tell me, my dear..how is the state of the finances here at the orphanage? We recently came into a rather large windfall, and I for one have most of it left over.".

Playtime! (DM JohnP)
Monday January 22nd, 2007 9:17:01 AM

The party deecides that the children may have some knowledge about Frost Ginny that would be of use, so most of them trudge back outside. Edmund, of course, remains firmly planted at the table inside the house. It's cold outside and, well, there's children out there. As well, there was mention of tea.

Shadow stays at the table with Buckle, too. When he asks about places where Tyrus may have gone, Buckle shrugs. "Like I said, he was here in the summer so he should have known the way. If it were snowing and dark, he might have turned down the wrong lane. When did he leave the Grey Owl?"

Arm also stays inside, moving to assist Kay to the kitchen. She quickly answers his questions about finances, "We're good. Not comfortable, by any means, but not too bad off. We have enough to get through the winter even though we won't have anything extra for Midwinter. I was hoping ...".

Kay smiles as she stares wistfully at the children.

"Well, to have something special for them. But if you want to help us, we would gladly accept any assistance. Please excuse me, the girls can make tea and bring it to you."

Kay hurries through a door on the far side of the kitchen while the children who were helping there stare at Arm.

++++++

The party members who go outside stand and look at the children, who simply stare back. At least until Thar joins the older children in a snowball fight that involves a lot of running around the buildings. Conner and Kadaz eventually join in. The young girl who previously asked Mira about making snow angels approaches her once more with an expectant smile on her face.

It's not long before the adventurers are covered in snow, panting and grinning. Whatever the reason for joining the children outside, it is fun. Eventually, gentle questioning provides some answers to the questions.

The little girl making snow angels with Mira volunteers that "Ginny comes at the end of the day." Another girl pipes up, "Sometimes she comes in the daytime, when it's snowing." Both agree that Ginny is nice even though she always reminds them to play nice, share and keep their promises.

During one of his circuits of the barn, Thar notices a saucer of milk left by a door. When he pays attention, he notices other offerings of food including fruit and other things not desired by cats. When asked, the younger boys say:
"Ginny told us to do that, to be nice to visitors."
"Ya, the little things that like to be around people."
Knowledge Nature DC 15 - Highlight to display spoiler: {Common superstition states that offerings of food like this ensure the friendship of the smll fey.}

The children can't offer a consistent description of Ginny. Some say that she's old "like a granny" while others say that Ginny is "pretty like Kay". They do agree that Ginny dresses in gray and white but sometimes it's a long dress or robe, sometimes "old-fashioned clothes" and one boy says that she was dressed "like you, in metal".

But they all agree that grown-ups can't see Ginny "unless she wants them too". And she likes Kay and Buckle, so she Ginny doesn't let them see her.

Edmund
Monday January 22nd, 2007 12:17:45 PM

((Sorry about the missed post. I was sick over the weekend. Doing a bit better now that the entire weekend is lost.))

Edmund is only too happy at the opportunity to stay inside where the tea is and the children aren't. He occasionally looks out the window, seeing the snow-covered adventurers and the children. At this, he smiles slightly, shakes his head, and sips his tea.

"Absolutely mad, the lot of them. Like as not, they'll all get pneumonia. Can't say I didn't warn them!"

Edmund sips his tea again thoughtfully, adding, "Well, I say that, but I suppose I didn't warn them. Oh well."

After losing in multiple snowball fights and sopping wet from melted snow, Thar finally takes a walk around the house. ON his travels, he notices several interesting items and that brings back a memory of past experiences. (Know (Nat) = 16)

When he reaches the rest of the group, he states "I remember that offering food or other things like this can improve relations with fey. The Ginny may be some sort of fey and if we could get her attention, we may make some progress in our quest. Does anyone have any ideas on how we should progress?"

Birdie has a tremendous time romping with the children in the snow. He steals a hat there, a mitten there, dropping them in the snow to tempt the children to chase, then picking the item up and running away with hit. Eventually he tires and lays down in a snow-free area, panting.

Kadaz starts to behave like a statue, accepting the snow balls that hit him. Eventually he enters into the spirt of the day, trying to swing the flat part of his axe at snowballs coming at him.

Conner
Monday January 22nd, 2007 7:12:53 PM

Conner spends some time with the kids outside, hiding behind the barn and lobbing snowballs at the younger kids, taking cover behind Kadaz, who takes a while to figure out the game, and eventually rolling down the small hill with three or four kids gathered up under his arms.

When everyone is exhausted, he sets the kids down and has a word. "I was interested in your stories about Ginny. Never heard of her when I was your age, and I guess she won't let me see her now, but if you could ask her if she knows what happened to Tyrus and his cart and pony I'd be thankful."

Conner ruffles a few heads of hair, squashes a few hats a bit further down than they're meant to go, and makes a beeline for the main house before any of the kids can find their range with a snowball.

Mira
Monday January 22nd, 2007 7:43:58 PM

Mira enjoys the day in the snow, though she remains at the fringes with the kids that seem a little more shy and sensitive, and likely to get run over by the more rambunctious play of the others. She tries to get them to work together to make a great snowman, and then another, referring to them with a wink at the kids as 'Mrs. Kay' and 'Mr. Buckle'.

When it is time to go in, she makes a great show of stamping her feet, and shaking the snow from her cloak, encouraging the children to do the same so as not to track snow all over the floor.

******

When Mira has the chance, she suggest to the group that they stay over at the manor, using it as a base from which to reconaissance the area (that is if Kay and Buckle agree!). With her warm Cloak of Comfort, and her bedroll, she imagines bunking in the barn should be okay.

She confides to the others, "I don't need much sleep these days, and I'd be interested in keeping an eye on these little offerings that have been laid out....just to see what shows up."

Arm
Tuesday January 23rd, 2007 5:50:17 AM

When Arm finishes with Kay in the kitchen, he ventures outside to watch the proceedings, albeit from afar. The cold weather is starting to get to him, but rather than sound like Edmund, he keeps quiet on the subject.

Once Mira comes back in, he pulls her aside and mentions to her what Kay told him, "Perhaps there is something we can do to make the children's Midwinter happier, regardless of whether we find our missing carter or not.". Looking at her meaningfully, he continues, "I've been thinking...from what we've heard of this 'Ginny', she doesn't sound like she would do anything to harm good-hearted people. Perhaps there is a dark side to our friend the carter that no one knows of, and if in fact she DID take him, it could be that she doesn't realize that the cargo he carried was for the children. Maybe if we explain the situation to her, she'll let us have the cargo and then she can do what she wishes with him. At this point, I don't think I want to be on her 'bad side'.".

Lunchtime at the Orphanage (DM JohnP)
Tuesday January 23rd, 2007 8:12:23 AM

After the morning's play, Kay goes to the door and calls the children in for lunch. Edmund eagerly agrees to move from the table where he has been lingering over a cooling pot of tea. The girls and boys who had been working in the kitchen set out bowls and spoons for everyone, including the party.

Outside, there is a rush towards the house after Kay calls from the back door. Even so, the children are surprisingly organized as they remove their outside clothing and boots, hanging them on the numerous hooks in the entry. The older children help the younger ones with their boots before moving into the kitchen where a large basin of warm water and a bar of soap has been placed for everyone to wash before eating.

The party follows into the dining room, finding that extra places have been squeezed onto the benches for them. After everyone is at the table, Buckle nods to Thar and asks the visiting cleric to bless the meal. Then the children line up to get their bowls filled with a soup full of vegetables and bits of chicken. Perhaps the soup is bit thinner than planned before the party arrived, but it is still a warm meal for the children after being outside. There are also platters of fresh baked bread on the table with bowls of pale yellow butter beside each platter.

After the initial clamour of spoons hitting bowls and slurping, the children begin to talk. They are obviously still excited about the visitors and most are willing to talk about Ginny despite the glances from Kay and Buckle.

When Conner asks a child about relaying a message to Ginny, the little boy nods.

"But she doesn't come every day, like."

After the meal, the children take their bowls to the kitchen. A different set of children take over the scrubbing of dishes while the remainder of the children head to different parts of the house. Kay and Buckle take a moment to talk to the party.

Kay smiles at them as she replies to Mira's request, "You're welcome to stay, if you like. We can find room for you with the children, or maybe down here. Right now the children are doing some chores, then the older ones will get their lessons while the young ones nap."

"You've probably got several hours before dusk if you want to scout about. Maybe you're right about Tyrus. I mean, he was good with his pony but he wasn't the friendliest sort. Certainly, he never played with the children when he brought loads here in the summer." Buckle chews on a knuckle for a moment before continuing.

"The locals say that you shouldn't wander the winter roads at night, not without good reason. Do you know when Tyrus left the Grey Owl?"

Mira likes the idea of spending the afternoon out of doors. With her magical cloak, she is always comfortable, no matter what the temperature.

With Arm's suggestion fresh in her mind, and a free afternoon before them, Mira suggests, "we could scout the contryside under the guise of a little hunting and gathering expedition. If we are lucky we might find a few coneys for Kay's pot, or maybe even something larger. There might be things still growing in the wild that could be gathered and used to make medicines or tea."

Mira waits for a response from her companions before adding, "of course we will be on the lookout for any traces of the lost carter or this Forst Ginny."

Mira will disclose that she has some magics that will ensure that those who do not have sufficient cold weather clothes, are able to endure the elements.

The Hunt Resumes (DM JohnP)
Wednesday January 24th, 2007 8:30:29 AM

The party prepares to head back out onto the cold road to find the errant Tyrus and his cart of Midwinter supplies. Everyone heads back out to the road but then they stop and debate for a moment after Conner suggests canvassing the neighbouring farms about the missing carter while others are intent on finding any trail that Tyrus may have left.

There's enough daylight left for the trackers to walk to the Grey Owl and return to the orphanage by evening. Those who choose to canvass the neighbouring farms would be able to visit maybe the six closest, depending on how mong they stay and chat.

Arm muses whether it would be simpler to just give Kay and Buckle some money for Midwinter gifts. However, it is only a two days before Midwinter and someone would have to stay at the orphanage while the pair travelled to Plateau City. And that's even if Kay is willing to make the trip.

Back to the Owl (DM JohnP)
Thursday January 25th, 2007 4:23:26 PM

The party has a quick discussion and decides to retrace their steps to the Grey Owl while looking for signs of the carter. Along the way, Conner and Mira and Thar decide to check at the farmhosues and then catch up to their companions.

The open, snowswept road near the orphan's estate doesn't reveal any sign of the cart. There is nothing that would be called "game" close to the road, either. There are some errant chickens and ducks but Arm figures that catching those for the cookpot wouldn't help relations with the neighbours. And Shadow is somehow convinced that the Guild frowns upon poultry-rustling. Asking the closest farms reveals no clues to the whereabouts of Tyrus and his cart. No one saw him or has heard any news of him.

After a couple hours walking, eveyone is back at the Grey Owl. Checking with the stableboys and the servers finds that Tyrus hasn't returned this way. The stable boys confirm that Tyrus left the inn just before dusk. When the party glances at the western sky, it looks like they will have just enough daylight to return to the farm. It's difficult to tell, though, because of the gathering clouds that are already obscuring part of the sun.

Thar takes the time to check the courtyard where Tyrus parked his cart and is able to spot enough hoofprints and wheel marks to distinguish it from the other traffic on the road. As the party returns to the road, the ranger is convinced that he will be able to track the cart.

Edmund is thankful that the return trip is faster, what with the strengthening wind that tosses his cloak back and forth. Even Kadaz is beginning to feel the cold wind seeping through the chinks of his armor. It's not long before the first fluffy white flakes of snow blow past the party, not enough to obscure the traces of the cart tracks frozen in the mud of the road but clearly just the first flurries of a heavy snow. The shadows cast by the party fade as the setting sun is obscured by the clouds, bringing dusk early.

The snow gradually increases to the point where the horizon is obscured and landmarks become indistinct. The road is slowly being covered in white, erasing the faint traces of the cart tracks. When the wind gusts strongest, it is only the trees on each side of the road that provide any sign of what direction the party should go.

Finally, at a point that Thar thinks is midway between the Grey Owl and the orphanage, the ranger sees the last traces of the cart tracks veer towards the north edge of the road. When he mentions this, Arm and Edmund swear that they see the road curving off that way to a sheltering grove of trees. Thar disagrees and the other party members aren't sure.

"No... no, you are right. I'm sorry. But still, your path here may go back to the orphanage, but there is a track here, and it seems to me that it goes right into that glade, just there. If Tyrus could have gone off anywhere between The Grey Owl and the Orphange, doesn't it stand to reason he may have made the same mistake, seeing this trail? And to me, it seems the cart tracks run that way."

When Thar declares he wants to investigate, Edmund pipes up. "I... I should like to come along too, if you don't mind. I won't get in the way! I have a strange feeling that maybe a Wizard will come in handy this once--" Edmund pauses for a moment, and then with a wink and a grin he adds, "As I always do!"

Thar checks the tracks and identifies the correct road back to the orphanage. While he doesn't see the trail that Edmund and Shadow insist that they see leading to the north, Thar suspects that this may explain Tyrus's disappearance.

When Thar and Conner look to the north they simply see swirling patches of snow and an open stretch of field. Depending on how he turns, Arm sees either the open field or the trail leading to the north. The others - Kadaz and Mira - see only what Thar has identified as the road.

Thar suggests scouting to the north with Shadow. When the pair set out along the path that Shadow sees, the others watch them retreat. Something ... funny ... happens after a swirl of blown snow passes by. The pair seem to have suddenly travelled farther, their footsteps stretching out as if they were striding farther than humanly possible. Their images are blurry, like a veil of some kind had been dropped behind them. When Thar looks back, he sees the same effect. It's as if Thar and Shadow were slowly travelling from the road between the Grey Owl and the orphange to some other place that isn't quite there.

The party is faced with a choice. Explore the northern trail together or return to the orphanage and try again in the morning, as Arm suggests.
